Freezing out Cuba has never worked
By Joel Mathis Philadelphia Magazine

f the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results, the United States drifted far from its senses decades ago in Cuba. We broke off relations and imposed an embargo after Fidel Castro took over and imposed communism on the island nation. We thought we’d wait him out. Folks, Fidel Castro is still alive. His brother runs the country.
When Castro took over, the news was delivered on blackand-white televisions. President Obama wasn’t even alive when the embargo was imposed. More than half the presidents who oversaw the U.S. attempts to freeze out Fidel are now dead themselves: Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Reagan have all passed on. U.S. stubbornness outlived them all. Put it this way: When Castro took over, the news was delivered on black-and-white televisions. The decision to normalize relationships with Cuba doesn’t mean the Castros are suddenly good guys, nor does it mean that Cuba will suddenly become a capitalist paradise. But it probably does mean that the U.S. will have more influence over the nation and its future. CUBA YES, cont’d. on Page 15
remember when...
Keep the embargo The conditions of lifting have not met
In 1996, the U.S. passed an act that clearly dictated what the Cuban government needed to do to lift the embargo. Included in the list was a legalization of all political activities, the release of political prisoners and allow labor unions.
Cuba responds to eases in restrictions with aggression
There have been three attempts to reduce the effects of the embargo by the United States — and each was met with aggression. When Jimmy Carter reached out in 1977, for example, the Cuban government sent 125,000 immigrants to the U.S. that had mental illnesses or a criminal history — in effect, the people that Castro didn’t want on his island.
Lifting the embargo only helps the Cuban government
There are virtually no businesses in Cuba that are privately owned. Any financial gains from the lifting of the embargo would be reaped by the government and not filter down to the population. It is estimated that 90 cents of every U.S. dollar would go directly to the government.
End the embargo It is an ineffective relic of the Cold War
The Cuban embargo was a good idea in theory, but it just hasn’t worked. It’s been in place for more than 50 years and there has been very little movement in the areas of human rights or political change. The Castro family remains in charge and no longer poses a military threat to the U.S.
It harms the U.S. economy
If the embargo were lifted today, it is estimated that 6,000 new full-time jobs would be created in the U.S., resulting in a $1.2 billion stimulus to the economy. That’s real value to the households that would be able to make a living thanks to open trade with Cuba.
It’s the population of Cuba that is harmed the most
Doctors in Cuba have access to less than half the drugs that are currently available to the rest of the world. Food shortages in Cuba have seen caloric intake drops across the entire population while the rest of the world is eating more food than ever before.

e-establishing diplomatic ties with Cuba is a great win for Obama. He’ll go down in history as the man who thawed relations with Raul and Fidel Castro after a half-century standoff. That’s one way of looking at it anyway. In reality, Obama just abandoned Cuba’s struggling pro-democracy movement to burnish his legacy. For captive people across the globe, this move is a decisive setback.
The Brothers Castro have the two prizes they long desired but could never obtain. At long last, the Brothers Castro have the two prizes they long desired but could never obtain from the United States: recognition and legitimacy. Now they can tell their dissident population, “See, even the Americans stand with us now. Don’t expect closer U.S.-Cuba ties to lead to greater political freedom, any more than economic liberalization has freed any except a small, politically connected class in China. About 1.3 billion Chinese remain under the boot heel of political and economic repression. If anything, expect the Castros to take a page from Beijing’s playbook and use expanded trade to shore up their authoritarian regime. Under Cuba’s 1976 constitution, all CUBA NO, cont’d. on Page 15

An inside look at a daredevil’s life ‘I Am Evel Kneivel’ gives candid glimpse at an extreme legend
By Jeri Jacquin Out on Bluray from director/producer Derik Murray and Virgil Films is an in-depth and candid look at the life of a man who said “I Am Evel Kneivel. In the 1960s, a man named Evel Knievel would be destined to become a legend. From a small town in Butte, Montana, Knievel started his life as a rebel and a bit of a blooming daredevil. From rodeo rider, to pole-vaulter to semi-pro hockey player and motocross racer, he lived on the edge. He would begin to promote himself as the daredevil motorcyclist who would jump things most men wouldn’t think to jump. Going from event to event his jumps would gain more and more notoriety and curiosity. This daredevil on a Harley-Davidson captured the imagination of the world with his 75 nerve shattering jumps that on 11 occasions led to bone and back breaking results. Yet Evel Knievel stood right back up, brushed off his iconic leather jumpsuit and became a national hero. The film is the story of Evel Knievel told through interviews with sons Kelly and Robbie Knievel, former wives Linda Knievel and Krystal Kennedy-Knievel, stunt rider Robbie Maddison, Bob Einstein (Super Dave Osborne), Guy Fieri, Michelle Rodriguez, Kid Rock and Matthew McConaughey — who all share their stories, feelings and elation with how the daredevil himself influenced and taught them something about their own lives. I had the extraordinary opportunity to talk with Evel Knievel’s son Kelly, who shared about his father, the history and what he all wants us to know about his legendary daredevil father.
I know you get this question a lot so forgive me, but your father was this amazingly incredible person but also larger than life. How was that for you as a kid growing up? Thank God we grew up in a small town in Montana. Butte, Montana, isn’t Hollywood or anything, and in the ’70s it wasn’t like today. We weren’t the Kardashians or anything. When my dad made his first jump in 1967 and jumped 75 times in a span of seven or eight
years, he became the most famous person in the world. He did it by traveling from county fair to county fair hauling his own jumps, being his own manager and doing his own appearances — thinking of everything himself. Seriously, we were so busy we didn’t have time to notice how busy he was. That’s a lot of jumps. Did you go to every one? No, we didn’t go to every single one, but my dad DAREDEVIL, cont’d. on Page 13

Fight cancer, win a car By Heather Siegel “Don’t sleep, compete. So says Melissa Matthews of the American Cancer Society when describing the events planned for this weekend in Vista. In addition to a 24hour event where over 350 people are expected at a local middle school, just down the street, TJ Crossman is going to give away a car July 18. All military families and veterans
a.m., where you can party, picnic and pitch a tent. But take time out in the afternoon to visit TJ’s shop after 1 p.m., where he is having his own birthday party. Instead of expecting presents for himself, TJ is going to give away a maintenance-free used car to a needy family. Applications have been storming in during the last couple of months. There are a lot of auto repair shops out there but how many give away cars?
“Cancer never sleeps so neither will we during our fundraiser. are welcome to attend both events. TJ is having a BBQ and you can picnic at the middle school event. These are rain or shine events. The American Cancer Society, which promotes research, education and cures for the disease, sponsors Relay for Life, a 24-hour party with recognition for cancer survivors. TJ Crossman, who owns an auto repair shop, in Vista, is a cancer survivor himself. TJ turned me on to both events, which coincidentally fall on the same day. “TJ Crossman has a heart of gold, said Bret Schanzenbach, CEO of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, in a recent interview. The Vista Chamber named TJ Crossman’s Auto Repair as its Small Business of the Year in April. “I even go there for my own auto work, admitted Schanzenbach, who has to maintain a cordial relationship with all of his almost 600 members. Crossman just opened his own shop two years ago but he has been in the auto repair business for over 20 years. Since recovering successfully from cancer in 2002, he has tirelessly donated his time back to the community. Relay for Life is just one of many activities in which he has participated. The cancer fundraiser starts at 9
TJ bought a 20-year-old vehicle and put a personal fortune of repairs and donated parts into it. What better way to help out a needy family as well as to demonstrate his abilities as an honest mechanic. Crossman hosted the Vista Chamber of Commerce Sundowner last February. About 75 –100 people came and he expects as many at his birthday party on July 18. Earning the Small Business of the Year award was a different story, though. “I took the top three recommendations from my Executive Board and sent their applications out of state, said Schazenbach. “I asked other Chambers to make the selection by ratings and TJ won. Crossman is using the same method to decide who gets the free car. “I put the face on my business but I rely upon community members to make the final decision, Crossman said. “Cancer never sleeps so neither will we during our fundraiser, said Matthews of the American Cancer Society. You can find TJ Crossman’s Auto Repair at 1330 N Melrose Dr. in Vista. (760) 908-3381. The Relay for Life is in the same area of Vista at Rancho Minerva Middle School, 2245 Foothill Drive in Vista.

Forbes released its 2015 rendition of the top-100 highest-paid athletes in the world on Wednesday, and for the second straight year boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. topped the list, earning just $13 million less than the next three athletes combined. Mayweather made over $200 million from his historic fight against Manny Pacquiao. Thanks to the fight generating nearly $600 million worth of revenue, Pacquiao actually comes in at second, albeit a distant second, on the list. He was the 11th highest-paid athlete in 2014. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Roger Federer finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in the rankings that include both earnings and endorsements. This means that not a single player from the three major sports in the United States – football, basketball, and baseball – cracked the top-5. LeBron James is the highest-paid basketball player at 6th, trailing Federer by just $2.2 million. Ben Roethlisberger, surprisingly, is the highest-paid football player, coming in at 11. And Jon Lester is the highest paid baseball player at 19. For the sixth straight year, tennis star Maria Sharapova ($29.7 million) ranks as the highest-paid female athlete, finishing 26th overall.

River time on the Seine By Howard Hian A recent AmaWaterways riverboat trip captured the essence of travel; an interesting itinerary, beautiful scenery, historic landmarks, well-planned tours and wonderful surprises. Upon boarding and after a quick exploration of the boat, we happily settled into the leisurely rhythm of what I call river time. River time refers to the ship’s pace as everything seems to slow down. There is time to read, relax and meet fellow passengers. It also affords panoramic photo opportunities along the waterway while transiting locks or gliding by pastoral scenes, villages and towns. Our route was round trip from Paris to Normandy on the fabled Seine, France’s second longest river, which flows eastward toward the English Channel. Each day found us at a new destination where complimentary tours were offered. Our favorite ports included two we could explore by bike: Rouen and Les Andelys. The ancient city of Rouen was home to Claude Monet and Gustave Flaubert and the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Picturesque Les Andelys is the location of
Chateau-Gaillard, one of Richard the Lionheart’s castles. In Giverny, we toured Monet’s home and spectacular gardens. We also visited a Degas exhibit in the world famous Impressionist Museum. Other excursions took us to a Calvados distillery in Normandy at the Chateau du Breuiland; Beauvron-En-Auge, considered by some to be the most beautiful village in France; and Van Gogh’s last home and gravesite at Auvers-sur-Oise. Passengers are given a factfilled destination guide that is a perfect trip companion. It detailed our route along the Seine, local history and lore, maps and even French phrases. Each day, the “Daily Cruiser provided port information, weather updates and an hourly itinerary including evening entertainment. The breakfast

The ship has 75 comfortable cabins with plenty of storage space, in-room internet access, TV and panoramic windows. The staff is mainly Eastern European; well trained and friendly. The cruise manager — part concierge, part social director — was extraordinarily helpful. Powering the boat is a Cummings V-8, 1150 HP diesel engine. One of the challenges traveling on
European rivers is that water conditions can affect the schedule. Although that happened with us (high water from recent rains made it impossible to pass under some bridges), AmaWaterways made extraordinary efforts to keep its passenger safe and informed. It’s never the problem, but how it’s handled‌ they score an A+. For cruise information, logon to www.amawaterways.com or call 1-800-626-2915.
Travel Tips:
Pack light, include a spare pair of glasses and use a credit card that doesn’t charge for ATMs or currency exchanges. My Pop Top Carry-On (www.eaglecreek.com) eliminated unwelcome airline luggage fees. A couple of trips pay for the product. Teva’s Wander Lace (www.teva.com) is a comfortable walking shoe and ideal for the ship’s casual dress code. Teko’s stylish eco-performance sports socks (www.tekoforlife.com) are favorites of mine. Headwear? Go with Scottevest’s TEC cap, (www.scottevest.com); great fit, plus two secret pockets for Euros, ID or cabin key. Safe travels and enjoy the journey‌. www.Travels-withHian.com

82-yr-old vet earns high school diploma John G. Gbur stressed the importance of education to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. However, the 82-year-old Ashtabula resident never had a high school degree — not until June, that is. Struthers High School in Youngstown, Ohio, in conjunction with the Struthers Fallen Soldier Project, awarded Gbur and six other veterans honorary high school diplomas June 7 during its commencement ceremony. Fallen Soldiers works with school districts to find veterans who did active duty instead of graduating from high school. “After all the graduates got their diplomas, we stepped forward, picked up our diplomas and stepped back, Gbur
said while examining the diploma that bears the high school’s name in gold letters. “It took me 65 years to get it. He keeps the diploma in a white envelope right next to his recliner. His wife, Ida Rae Gbur, said she was beaming after the ceremony. “I was so proud of him, she said. The veterans had left Struthers High to serve their tour of duty in conflicts including World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Gbur and his twin brother, Charles, left school in 1950 during their sophomore year to join the Navy. “I went from high school to boot camp, to machinist school to an aircraft carrier — The Franklin D. Roosevelt, he said. “I was a machinist in one of four engine rooms. I had the throttles.

there? The mother smiles and says, “Well, dear, a man goes through three phases also. In his 20s, his willy is like an oak tree, mighty and hard. In his 30s and 40s, it’s like a birch, flexible but reliable. After his 50s, it’s like a Christmas tree. “A Christmas tree? the daughter asks. “Yes, dead from the root up and the balls are just for decoration.
Stages of life
Just for Laughs
A family is at the dinner table. The son asks the father, “Dad, how many kinds of boobs are there? The father, surprised, answers, “Well, son, a woman goes through three phases. In her 20s, a woman’s breasts are like melons, round and firm. In her 30s and 40s, they are like pears, still nice, hanging a bit. After 50, they are like onions. “Onions? the son asks. “Yes. You see them and they make you cry. This infuriated his wife and daughter. The daughter asks, “Mom, how many different kinds of willies are
Cool Morals:
1. Money is not everything. There’s also MasterCard & Visa. 2. One should love animals. They are tasty, too. 3. Save water. Drink beer. 4. Studying is healthy. So leave it for the sick. 5. Books are holy. So don’t touch them. 6. Love your neighbor. But don’t get caught. 7. Every one should marry because happiness is not the only thing in life.
Money problems
If money doesn’t grow on trees, why do banks have branches?
Time for good behavior
A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband is not in their bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front of him. He appears deep in thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of coffee. “What’s the matter, dear? she whispers as she steps into the room. “Why are you down here at this time of night?
The husband looks up, “Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 17? he asks solemnly. The wife is touched, thinking her husband is so caring and sensitive. “Yes, I do, she replies. The husband pauses. The words are not coming easily. “Do you remember when your father caught us in the backseat of my car? “Yes, I remember, says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues, “Do you remember when he shoved a shotgun in my face and said, ‘Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years!’ “I remember that too, she replies softly. He wipes another tear from his cheek and says, “I would have gotten out today!
Morning paper
An older woman brings her husband the morning paper with his coffee, but before handing it to him, she smacks him across the head with the Sports Section. “What was that for? the husband asks. “That’s for 25 years of lousy love making, the wife replies, curtly. Sitting for a bit, the husband ponders his wife’s reply. He then rolls up the paper and smacks her across the head. “What was that for? the wife repeats her husband’s earlier question.

Just a tap
A taxi passenger taps the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screams, loses control of the car, nearly hits a bus, goes up on the footpath, and stops centimeters from a shop window. For a second, everything goes quiet in the cab, then the driver says, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me! The passenger apologizes and says, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much. The driver replies, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.
Behave!
Q: What did did the mother duck say to her duckling? A: “If you don’t behave, I’m gonna quack you one.
Girls and sports
A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team’s bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience. “Oh, I really liked it, she replied, “especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn’t understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents. Dumbfounded, her date asked, “What do you mean? “Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it, and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was, ‘Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!’ I’m like, hello? It’s only 25 cents!
Perks and benefits
Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for? The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package. The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50 percent of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette? The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding? The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.

Fight over Army troop cuts begins The Army’s planned cuts of 40,000 soldiers, as well as 17,000 civilian layoffs, will be politically painful for lawmakers from both parties who have fought to protect troops, civilians and bases in their states. And the pain may not end there. The Army has warned it may have to cut 30,000 more soldiers if Congress does not reverse caps on the Pentagon’s budget mandated by the 2011 Budget Control Act. Although the troop cuts were long anticipated, they will add pressure to an already fraught budget situation, which both sides are blaming the other for as Congress flirts with another shutdown in October. Republicans are attempting to pass spending bills that would adhere to the caps, yet boost the Pentagon’s budget through a war fund not subject to the same limits. Democrats have refused to consider those proposals until Republicans sit down with them to discuss lifting the caps on defense and non-defense
spending alike. The White House, for its part, has threatened to veto the GOP bills. So far, neither side is backing down. On Wednesday, both sides blasted the cuts and pinned the blame on each other. “Planned reductions in Army force levels have been public for some time and are a result of hundreds of billions of dollars in defense cuts since President Obama took office, said Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Democrats, who also objected vigorously to the cuts, blamed the Republicans. “I want to be very clear about why this is happening. Even though the Republican budget added money for the military, they did it through a gimmick [and] the military cannot pay for ground strength through a contingency fund — a one year budget gimmick, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said.

received the coveted trophy. “Once all of the scores were tallied the winning squad received the Mitchell Cup, named after the Navy Cross recipient from the Battle of Fallujah, Cpl. Robert Mitchell, said Vasseur. The Marines also received more than the trophy to display their pride. “The squad was awarded the super squad badge, stated Vasseur. “They will wear it for the rest of their career. At the end of the day, it’s not about winning the badge or the trophy for the Marines. “It’s about highlighting the small unit leadership, about identifying how effectively the squad leader can lead his Marines and the team leaders can control their fire teams, Vasseur said. “When the Marines leave here, they’re going to have a wonderful understanding of leadership, planning and the importance of that competitive spirit. We wanted to establish that esprit de corps. Major Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, the commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, spoke to the Marines during the award ceremony. “Congratulations to each and every one of you, said Nicholson as he addressed the Marines and Sailors. “We’re only going to decorate only one squad today but all of you answered the challenge and I’m proud of every single one of you. After the ceremony the Marines all returned to their respectable units after the competition with something to hold onto.

Sometimes Wall Street has a good idea By Norman L. Macht The business of Wall Street is to make money using other people’s money. Like other consumer industries, they continually introduce new products. Some of those products, derivatives for example, are too complicated for even their inventors to understand and should be avoided like land mines. Others, like the mortgage-backed securities that led to the disastrous financial crisis of recent memory, have become corrupted by greed. And every now and then, somebody comes up with a good idea. One such product is the ETF — the Exchange Traded Fund. Once upon a time, if you wanted to invest in the stock market, you were faced with the problem of deciding which companies to invest in, and who knew how to do that? Manipulators ran companies’ stock prices up and down like flags at sunrise and sunset. You had to be a skeptical CPA to dissect the financial state of a company. If you believed the stock market was going to go up, there was no way you could “buy the market. In the 1920s an investment company in Massachusetts came up with a way for the average investor to buy “a

piece of the market, leaving the picking of individual stocks to a “manager. They called it a mutual fund. It enabled millions of small investors to benefit by the growth of the economy. Like most good ideas, it attracted competition, and soon there were hundreds of such funds competing for the public’s money, and the average person
ated a way to truly buy the market: an index fund that mirrors the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, which includes the 502 largest (in value) public companies traded on U.S. stock exchanges — about 75 percent of the total market, with no active manager responsible for picking individual winners. It was the precursor of today’s ETF — the exchange traded fund. As always, the denizens of Wall Street have taken a good idea and complicated it by slicing and dicing it into thousands of variations. You can now “buy the market — all the way from owning a piece of every publicly owned company in the world in one basket down to small and specialized baskets from gold to potash, China to Africa, health care to software. ETFs are bought and sold like individual stocks at minimal — sometimes no — commission and with minute management fees. Whatever your objective, whatever your risk tolerance level, a suitable ETF is your best vehicle for a worryfree, decision-free investment future.

was faced with the dilemma of choosing the best management. Some managers did very well for their investors, but most were about or below average. Mutual Funds were sold through brokers or fund distributors. High commissions, or “loads, to buy the shares plus the managers’ fees often took a big bite out of any profits. Then, about 40 years ago, John Bogle founded a mutual fund management group called Vanguard, and cre-

Cont’d. from Page 1 Engagement is often better than non-engagement. “Today, the United States is taking historic steps to chart a new course in our relations with Cuba and to further engage and empower the Cuban people, the White House said in a written statement. That’s mostly likely correct. How do we know? Because more than five decades of silence and in-
ternational cold-shoulderdom never did work. It seems almost certain at this point that any other approach will work better. There will be, of course, unreconstructed Cold Warriors who will complain bitterly about Obama’s decision. Do not listen to them. They’ve had several generations to be right — and failed utterly. A change is coming to U.S.-Cuba relations? Great. It’s about time. It’s been about time for a long, long time.
ÂœĂ€ĂŠ>`Ă›iĂ€ĂŒÂˆĂƒÂˆÂ˜}ĂŠÂˆÂ˜vÂœĂ€Â“>ĂŒÂˆÂœÂ˜]ĂŠV>Â?Â?ĂŠÂnxnÂŽĂŠxÎLJÓÓnäĂŠUĂŠ>`Ă›iĂ€ĂŒÂˆĂƒÂˆÂ˜}J“ˆÂ?ÂˆĂŒ>ÀލÀiĂƒĂƒ°VÂœÂ“ĂŠ
CUBA NO
Cont’d. from Page 1 trade must be conducted through government-owned monopolies. That’s not going to change. Yet for nearly 25 years, American business groups with Cuban ties have made the case for lifting the U.S. trade embargo. Isolating Cuba will only lead to more boat people and maybe even war, they said. Think of the business opportunities we’re missing, they said. We’re losing
out to the Germans! The Mexicans! The Spanish! Even the Canadians! And the truth is that for nearly 25 years, all of that German, Mexican, Spanish and Canadian investment has done precious little to improve the lives of Cubans. Neither has the increased flow of U.S. dollars into the island nation. Cuba continues to persecute its dissidents, sponsor terrorism and foment anti-American sentiment across Latin America. To expect new relations to change that is the height of folly. ĂŠ Ă•Â?ÞÊ£x]ĂŠĂ“ä£xĂŠ15
