Speed has always been as powerful as stealth The SR-71 was so fast, it could outrun any missile fired at it
U
ntil Lockheed Martin finally builds the SR-72 Mach-6 spy plane it announced in November 2013 — and which reportedly appeared in plain view for the first time in July 2017 — the iconic SR-71 Blackbird, capable of flying three times the speed of sound, remains the fastest warplane ever flown operationally. So fast that no missiles fired at it had a chance of hitting. When the U-2 spy plane was built in the 1950s, its designer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson already knew that it would be vulnerable to enemy defenses. So to gather intelligence in foreign skies, in 1964 U.S. President Lyndon Johnson announced that the Lockheed Advance Development Projects, also known as the Skunk Works, would build another strategic reconnaissance aircraft — one so fast that no other airplane could reach it. The Blackbird’s flight characteristics were incredible. It was able to fly at more than three and a half times the speed of
sound at 88,000 feet. To give you an idea of what that altitude means, the SR-71 took photos from three times the height of Mount Everest and its pilots dressed in full pressure suits like astronauts. During its more than three-decade career, which ended on Oct. 9, 1999, no SR71 was lost to hostile action. But not for a lack of trying on the part of America’s enemies. Neither enemy fighters nor surface-to-air missiles were ever able to shoot down or damage an SR-71. High speed was one factor. But the Blackbird was also hard to detect by radar, being the first aircraft to feature stealth technology. A special paint was used on the SR-71’s wings, tail and fuselage. Containing iron ferrite, this paint absorbed radar energy instead of returning it to the sender. With a radar cross section equivalent to a small light aircraft, the SR-71 appeared on enemy radar screens too late for a missile computer to estimate its direction for a successful shoot-down. The Blackbird

also masked its range and bearing by jamming enemy listening devices with sophisticated electronic countermeasures. Not only were SAMs unable to catch the Blackbird, even the fastest Soviet fighter jets lacked the necessary speed to intercept the SR-71. Soviet pilot Viktor Belenko, who defected to Japan in a MiG-25 on Dec. 6, 1976, confirmed this in his book “MiG Pilot.” “American reconnaissance planes, SR71s, were prowling off the coast, staying outside Soviet airspace by photographing terrain hundreds of miles inland with side-angle cameras,” Belenko wrote. “They taunted and toyed with the MiG25s sent up to intercept them, scooting up to altitudes the Soviet planes could not reach, and circling leisurely above them or dashing off at speeds the Russians could not match.” Continued Belenko: “(The Soviets) had a master plan to intercept an SR-71 by positioning a MiG-25 in front of it and one below it, and when
the SR-71 passed they would fire missiles. But it never occurred. Soviet computers were very primitive, and there is no way that mission can be accomplished. First of all, the SR-71 flies too high and too fast. The MiG-25 cannot reach it or catch it. Secondly … the missiles are useless above 27,000 meters (88,000 feet), and as you know, the SR-71 cruises much higher. But even if we could reach it, our missiles lack the velocity to overtake the SR-71 if they are fired in a tail chase. And if they are fired head-on, the guidance systems cannot adjust quickly enough to the high closing speed.” Moreover, Belenko’s missiles would have not worked because “most air-to-air missiles are optimized to maneuver in the thicker air below around 30,000 feet in order to shoot down an enemy plane,” former Blackbird pilot Col. Richard Graham explained in his book “SR-71: The Complete Illustrated History of the Blackbird.” “Firing at the SR-71, cruising at 75,000 feet, the air is so thin that any maneuvering capability of the missile is practically nonexistent.” With the Mach-6 SR-72 a real possibility, “speed is the new stealth” is Lockheed Martin’s new slogan. But really, there’s nothing new about it. Speed has worked to protect spy planes for the last 60 years. April 1, 2019 1
CHARGERS REPORT
By Art Garcia Jr. Military Press
W
ith a number of players’ contracts expiring during the next two years and limited cap space available, the Chargers have re-signed five of its own free agents during the first week of free agency, as well as veterans Thomas Davis and Tyrod Taylor. Having advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs last season, retaining in-house players will be key to stabilizing the continuity of the roster that gelled so well together en route to a second place finish in the AFC West with a 12-4 record and the team’s first return to the postseason since 2013. However, with the release of Jahleel Addae, the team appears to have an opening at free safety. Do the Chargers stand pat and let Adrian Phillips and Desmond King compete to fill the void or does General Manager Tom Telesco opt to sign a veteran safety with more experience to man the secondary? Despite their limited action in free agency thus far, Touchdown Wire recently listed the Chargers No. 4 in its latest NFL power rankings.
Filling the free safety void Per Gavino Borquez (ChargersWire), “The loss of wide receiver Tyrell Williams stings a bit, but he wasn’t the offense’s top option. The addition of linebacker Thomas Davis is a nice pickup to help lead their young core on defense. “The Chargers re-signed a few of their players, brought in linebacker Thomas Davis and quarterback Tyrod Taylor, while only losing cornerback Jason Verrett and wide receiver Tyrell Williams to another team thus far. “Los Angeles’ holes lie at on the offensive and defensive line and the free safety position, but they will have an opportunity to build a solid foundation with their seven selections.” With the draft a little over a month away, here is our look at the latest mock drafts. While some prognosticators have already listed their second and third mocks, others have just recently put out their first mocks of 2019. Although most analysts still have the Chargers selecting a defensive player at No. 28, only two — Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis — have the Bolts taking a safety. Daniel Jeremiah (NFL.com) 2nd Mock — Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware. “Adderley is the perfect complement to Derwin James.”

Thomas Davis will provide veteran leadership both on and off the field for the Chargers.
* Jeremiah had the Chargers taking Alabama LB Mack Wilson in his 1st mock. Charles Davis (NFL.com) 1st Mock — Taylor Rapp, S, Washington. “Terrific range sideline to sideline and in the alleys. A sure, excellent tackler, Rapp will plug nicely into defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s attacking unit.” Bucky Brooks (NFL.com) 3rd Mock — Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson. “Given free agent Corey Liuget’s uncertain status, Lawrence could be a target for the Chargers at this pick. As a massive space eater with exceptional athleticism, Lawrence will occupy blockers and create opportunities for the team’s linebackers to flow freely to the ball.” * Brooks had the Chargers taking Ohio St. DT Dre’Mont Jones and Michigan LB Devin Bush in his 1st and 2nd mocks, respectively. Mel Kiper Jr. (ESPN) 2nd Mock — Jerry Tillery, DT, Notre Dame. “Corey Liuget, Brandon Mebane, Darious Philon and Damion Square are all free agents, which means the Chargers have to address defensive tackle in free agency or in the draft. I thought they could have taken a DT in Round 1 last year. As I noted in my first Mock Draft, L.A. was
pushed around in its playoff loss to the Patriots. Tilley is a good interior passrusher with tremendous size (6-6, 304) and athletic traits. He has some versatility, too.” * Kiper had the Chargers taking Clemson DT Christian Wilkins in his first mock. Todd McShay (ESPN) 3rd Mock — Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson. “L.A. already has Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram on this defensive line. now drop a 342-pound run-stopper with 5.05 speed and high-end athleticism. With multiple members of this unit heading toward are agency, Lawrence would be a great get.” * McShay had the Chargers taking Jerry Tillery in his first two mocks. Chad Reuter (NFL.com) 3rd Mock — Kaleb McGary, T, Washington. “Despite McGary’s lack of length, he’s a powerful and athletic player who will help the Chargers secure the right side of the line the way Braden Smith did for the Colts in 2018.” * Reuter had the Chargers taking Kansas St. OT Dalton Risner in his first FREE SAFETY, continued on Page 9

WOUNDED WARRIOR TRIALS JUST THE RIGHT ATTITUDE
Rear Adm. Kyle Cozad, commanding officer of Naval Education and Training Command, participates in the 2019 Navy rowing trails in Coronado on March 16. | Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Ryan M. Breeden
Education commander competes at coronado PENSACOLA, Fla. — A little battered and bruised but no worse for wear, Rear Adm. Kyle Cozad, commander of Naval Education and Training Command, returned from Coronado after competing in the 2019 Team Navy Trials, March 15–21. Cozad, along with 54 other wounded warriors, tested their grit in 13 events including rowing, cycling, wheelchair basketball, golf, swimming, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis, sitting volleyball, powerlifting, shooting, archery and track and field. Only a select few will represent the Navy in the 2019 Department of Defense Warrior Games to be held in Tampa, Florida, June 21–30.
“I quickly discovered that I was the ‘silverback’ in the group in terms of age and rank,” Cozad said. “I can assure you that folks took me seriously on day one when I commented that rank was irrelevant. The young guys and gals took it to me on the court, cycling course, rowing venue, basically wherever they could. Trust me, there was no mercy for the old man!” The trials are part of the Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor program, which is the Navy’s sole organization for coordinating the non-medical care of seriously wounded, ill and injured sailors and Coast Guardsmen, Commander, continued on Page 8

ADVANCED HEARING AID TECHNOLOGY
“I was amazed! Sounds I hadn’t heard in years came back to me!” — Don W., Sherman, TX
How can a hearing aid that costs less than 200 $
be every bit as good as one that sells for $2,250 or more? The answer: Although tremendous strides have been made in Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have not been passed on to you. Until now... MDHearingAid® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no time-consuming “adjustment” appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia? A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR 45-DAY RISK-FREE TRIAL!

Who’s the boss?
A boss was complaining in a staff meeting the other day that he wasn’t getting any respect. Later that morning he went to a local sign shop and bought a small sign that read, “I’m the Boss.” He then taped it to his office door. Later that day when he returned from lunch, he found that someone had taped a note to the sign that said: “Your wife called, she wants her sign back!”

An avid golfer was late coming home from his weekly game. As he dragged himself wearily through the door, his worried wife met him. “Honey,” she said. “How was your game? Why are you so late?” “This had to be the worst, hardest game of my life,” he said. “Jack died out there on the golf course. Just had a heart attack at the second hole and then died.” “Oh, no!” she cried. “How awful for you! He was your best friend! No wonder you are late!” “Yes, the ordeal really wore me out,” he said. “The whole rest of the game it was hit the ball, drag Jack, hit the ball, drag Jack ...”
and providing resources and support to their families. Navy Wounded Warrior has assisted more than 6,600 service members throughout the country. Although the trials allowed Cozad to experience sports he had never tried since he was injured in spring 2018, causing him to adapt to wheelchair mobility, it was the time spent with fellow wounded warriors that had the greatest impact. “The week provided me an opportunity to spend time with each of the wounded warriors and their caregivers, which gave me a perspective that exceeds words,” said Cozad, who underwent emergency back surgery and is working through physical therapy to stand and walk again. “I can cite example after example of how this program, and more specially, adaptive sports have literally changed lives, and for that understanding, I walked away with much more than I ever imagined before I arrived.” “As a guy who’d been in for 33 years, and wasn’t quite sure why my local Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor team wanted to visit me after I was released from the hospital, we (Navy leadership) need to better understand the what, why and how Navy Wounded Warrior supports our wounded, seriously ill and injured,” Cozad said. “The program only works when prospective wounded warriors know about it, and when parent commands support it,” Cozad said. “Although these stories are the exception, I have heard about commands who don’t understand the program aims and on the extreme fringes, about commands who simply don’t support their warriors.” From Cozad’s small group interactions with other wounded warriors and the mentoring he does with about a dozen recently injured or recovering sailors, he said he left the Team Navy Trials with an important realization. “There is nothing more important than an opportunity to supplement the great work our region Navy Safe Harbor caseworkers provide by talking to other wounded warriors about their experiences,” said Cozad. “No one knows what it’s like better than someone who’s been there, done that.” Although the oldest and most senior wounded warrior at the trials, Cozad hopes to represent the Navy at the 2019 DOD Warrior Games.
