ords and images have power. They shape our reality and African-Americans have been paying the price for 400 years. Though Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, and now Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, are at the center of this latest controversy, the true problem does not begin or end with these two men. Instead, they are the consequence of our nation’s collective unwillingness to recognize that 400 years of dehumanizing language and imagery have a cultural impact. Blackface isn’t just about painting one’s skin darker or putting on a costume. It invokes a racist and painful history. Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by nonblack performers to represent a caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the “happygo-lucky darky on the plantation” or the “dandified coon”. By the middle of the century, blackface minstrel shows had become a distinctive American art form, translating formal works such as opera into popular terms for a general audience. Early in the 20th century, blackface branched off from the minstrel show and became

a form in its own right. In the United States, blackface had largely fallen out of favor by the turn of the 21st century, and is now generally considered offensive and disrespectful, though the practice continues in other countries. By 1840, black performers also were performing in blackface makeup. Frederick Douglass generally abhorred blackface and was one of the first people to write against the institution of blackface minstrelsy, condemning it as racist in nature, with inauthentic, northern, white origins. Douglass did, however, maintain: “It is something to be gained when the colored man in any form can appear before a white audience.” New York City’s famous Apollo Theater in Harlem featured skits in which almost all black male performers wore the blackface makeup and huge white painted lips, despite protests that it was degrading from the NAACP. The comics said they felt “naked” without it.

Defensive free agents on the market

ntering the 2018 offseason, Rams General Manager Les Snead made the decision to go “all-in” for the upcoming season and acquired veteran players whom he signed to big money contracts. Already loaded with talent, Snead traded for the likes of Brandon Cooks and cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. He also landed the top unrestricted free agent on the market in Ndamukong Suh — all in the effort to get the Rams to the next level. Snead’s gamble paid off as the Rams won the NFC Championship and played in the Super Bowl in just its second year after returning to Los Angeles. What many Chargers fans are wondering is if General Manager Tom Telesco will follow suit and also go “all-in” this offseason in hopes his highly talented squad can get to the Super Bowl while quarterback Philip Rivers has some gas left in his tank. As the free agency period quickly approaches, Telesco has some major decisions to make on which in-house players he will re-sign and which free agents, if any, he will bring into the fold

The Chargers have a total of 13 Brandon Mebane and linebackers Denunrestricted free agents including three zel Perryman and Kyle Emanuel. Injuries at the linebacker position exposed the defense throughout the latter half of the season and an upgrade is needed via the draft, free agency or both. In their first mock draft, both Daniel Jeremiah (NFL Network) and Seth Trachtman (Yardbarker) have the Chargers selecting a linebacker with the 28th pick. Jeremiah — Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama. “The Chargers need to get better at the linebacker position and Wilson is a true three-down player,” Jeremiah said. “There is little mystery why the Chargers would be interested in adding a player of Wilson’s caliber at the linebacker position. Kyzir White, Jatavis Brown, and Denzel Perryman all suffered season-ending injuries in 2018. Wilson isn’t just an obvious need-based pick given his position. At 6-2, 234 lbs, he has the size you’re looking for in addition to being one of the better playmaking defenders in the draft. He is

capable against the run and is an asset in coverage as well. “Tom Telesco could not do much better with the 28th overall pick in the draft than to come away with Mack Wilson.” Trachtman — Devin Bush, LB, Michigan. Said Trachtman, “Linebacker could be an area of need for the Chargers with Denzel Perryman a pending free agent. Bush has the ability and versatility to address the need. He had 10 sacks and 161 tackles over the past two seasons for the Wolverines.” Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released its top 50 players who are set to become free agents on March 13. ARE THEY SAFE? Using an e-cig is called vaping. E-Cigarette and vaping industry has grown into one of the most profitable marketplaces in the world, some experts anticipated a net worth of $10 billion in 2017. Consumers are now able to purchase vaping products that range from $8 to hundreds of dollars, available for purchase in common convenience stores, smoke shops and grocery markets around the world. JUUL has become ubiquitous on college and high school campuses. As of the last quarter of 2017, it accounted for nearly 47 percent of the market share for e-cigarettes — in comparison to 25 percent a year earlier, according to data from Wells Fargo.

Are they safe?

Are they a safe way for smokers to stop or a gateway to getting kids hooked on a habit that’s known to cause deadly diseases of the heart and lungs as well as cancer? Most contain the chemical nicotine, which is addictive. When you stop using it, you can go into withdrawal and feel depressed and crabby. Nicotine isn’t good for people with heart problems. And some initial research shows it may hurt your arteries. It can also:

• Harm the developing brains of kids and could affect memory and attention. • Damage unborn babies. Pregnant women shouldn’t use anything with nicotine. But the concerns go beyond nicotine alone. Some brands contain chemicals including formaldehyde — often used in building materials — and another ingredient used in antifreeze that can cause cancer. Flavors in e-cigs also raise red flags. Some use a buttery-tasting chemical called diacetyl, which is often added to foods like popcorn. When it’s inhaled, it can be dangerous. “Diacetyl is a well-known harmful chemical, which, among other things, causes a lung disease called ‘popcorn lung,’” says Erika Sward, assistant vice president for national advocacy at the American Lung Association. Most people are unfortunately unaware of the severity of health risks associated with the dangers of vaping — some adverse affects proving to be just as dangerous as cigarette smoke. Buying a concept car? It’s not easy In August 2016, Cadillac unveiled its luxury concept vehicle the Escala in Pebble Beach, California. The car was then featured in Cadillac commercials during the February 2017 Oscars. The commercials were so successful, people actually went to Cadillac dealerships to buy the Escala, only to discover that it was not for sale. But why not? Because at the time the Escala was only a concept car, one in broad terms, that is designed to showcase a new vision or direction for a brand. And the truth is, few concept cars ever achieve as high of a profile as the Escala received. Typically once a concept car makes the circuit of the year’s auto shows, they tend to wither into obscurity. However, some do get a second lease on life and end up in the hands of private collectors who specifically seek out concept cars and other one-of-a-kind vehicles. But the Cadillac Escala is different; those potential buyers wanted (and expected) a full production version of the car, not a one-off collector’s item. According to Andres Valbuena, the purpose of a concept car is to “think big and get the money to do it.” Valbuena spent 20 years working in product development and brand strategy roles for Volkswagen, Jeep and Chevrolet, and has seen many concept vehicles through from aspirational beginnings to humble endings. He now runs a car research website. “You’re always looking five, six years out at what type of vehicles you should bring to market,” Valbuena says. “You’re doing all this forecasting on what could potentially be hot, SUVs, coupes, whatever it is. You always have this longterm plan, and once one of those longterm plans on paper makes sense, and there’s a potential business case for it, then you’ll start on the process of actually getting into the details of that specific project.” Here’s what the design process looks like: • The concept car is planned and designed by the automaker’s various teams • The concept car is modeled by computer • Clay models are made, usually a small display and another to scale • The automaker holds research clinics with the concept car to get feedback from consumers • An actual car may be built, though CONCEPT CARS, continued on Page 6

Renner: “Once a promising rookie, Anderson never quite regained form after an ACL tear, and he was dealt for a late rounder to the Jets last offseason. However, he quietly put together his best season

as a pro in 2018, and his 48 pressures were the 12th- most of any interior player in the league last season.” Spotrac: Anderson’s salary in 2018 was $1,907.000. No. 42 — K.J. Wright, LB, Seattle Seahawks. Renner: “Wright has been trending downwards ever since he earned an 88.3 overall grade back in 2015. The Seahawks linebacker hasn’t graded above 70.0 in coverage since, and he will be 30 next season. He’s still one of the best tackling linebackers in the NFL and has only one season with double-digit misses in his career (2014).” Spotrac: Wright’s salary in 2018 was $7,200.000. No. 46 — Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Green Bay Packers Renner: “Wilkerson looked much improved with a 76.5 overall grade the first three weeks of the season in Green Bay before breaking his leg against Washington. He fell off a cliff in New York after signing a big contract and had back-toback overall grades below 70.0. For a man who’s not even 30, it’s difficult to think he can’t get back to quality play.” Spotrac: Wilkerson’s salary in 2018 was $5 million. The Endzone: With Rivers entering the final year of a contract that will pay him $23 million, his next contact will ensure he retires a Charger. “I can tell you

he’s not going anywhere, so he’s going to be here,” Telesco said, per ESPN.com’s Eric D. Williams. “We’ll talk at the right point, as far as the moves we need to make in the offseason, the resources we have and how it all fits in. But yeah, he’s not going anywhere.” Throwing for 4,308 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions en route to leading the Chargers to the playoffs for the first time since 2013, Rivers proved he still ranks amongst the top quarterbacks in the NFL. With Tom Brady winning another Super Bowl at 41 and a 50-year-old Drew Brees signing a two-year, $50 million contract extension, look for Rivers to sign a cap-friendly, multi-year contract to allow Telesco the flexility to bring in the players needed to get the Chargers to the Super Bowl.

Per Spotrac, Cooks earned $5,400.000 last season. This season his base salary is $1 million with a roster bonus of $9,459.000 and a signing bonus of $17 million. Talib earned $11 million in 2018 and his base salary this season is $8 million. Peters earned $1,741.931 in 2018 with a base salary of $9,069.000 for this upcoming season. Suh signed a one-year, $8,000.000 contract. With the new stadium at Hollywood Park set to open for the 2020 season, it is imperative the Chargers advance to, at least, the AFC Championship game next season. It’s highly unlikely Telesco will spend the kind of money Snead spent on players last year, however, whatever amount he does spend must result in a deep playoff run if the franchise has any hope of establishing a fan base in Los Angeles.

just complete enough for auto show purposes (that is, often not drivable) • The concept car makes the rounds at the auto show to generate publicity “If you look at just the display ones, like at the auto shows, those really crazy cars out there ... a lot of times, even though it looks like a car, underneath, sometimes it’s not,” Valbuena explains. “It’s just a square frame with a little electric motor that turns one wheel, so the guys don’t push it. It’s interesting and it’s funny sometimes when you walk around it and you’re like, ‘Wow, this is really cool.’ Well, sometimes it’s made out of clay and it weighs 10,000 pounds [4,535 kilos], but you can’t tell.” And, when a concept car’s time is up, one of several things can happen to them: They can be displayed in the automaker’s offices or production facility, donated to a school for teaching purposes, a fire station for training, dismantled or crushed, or sold. Valbuena says that concept cars aren’t sold very often, in part because of liability and also because it doesn’t make business sense. But it does happen from time to time. He says that, in his experience, concept cars that were sold came with complicated contracts that prevented buyers from registering them or even driving them on the street. Even drivable, fully functional concept cars are not built to production standards. Volkswagen, for example, sometimes sold functional, less-extreme concept cars to race teams, simply to avoid crushing them. There are always exceptions, and in the case of concept cars, those exceptions tend to be older. Ohio car collector Myron Vernis owns several concept and one-of-a-kind vehicles. In early 2016 he acquired a 1976 Honda Lady. The Lady is a concept based on the Honda Civic that was built by Italian coachbuilder Sergio Coggiola for the 1976 Geneva Motor Show.

“It was really kind of accidental,” Vernis says. “I like unique, one-off and low production cars, and I also like Japanese cars. This one kind of fit both of those models.” Vernis will disclose only that he has fewer than 100 cars in his collection, enough to be well-versed in the process. He drives all of his cars and says he has never had trouble registering or insuring them, even though some take more persistence than others. He says that collectors’ car insurance is the best way to protect a concept or other rare car, and that he is fortunate to have mechanically inclined friends who enjoy the challenge of working on his collection. “The Japanese manufacturers don’t seem to let their concept cars get away,” Vernis says. “The Americans crush most of them because of liability but the Japanese manufacturers seem to keep them, so it’s rare to have a Japanese concept [car] out in private ownership, which is

Dog naps

An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep on the couch. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back, resumed his position on the couch and slept for an hour. This continued for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: “Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.” The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: “He lives in a home with four children — he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?”
