The 2018 Paralympic Winter Games are underway in PyeongChang, South Korea. There are 18 Veterans among the 74 athletes representing Team USA at the Games, including eight Marines, seven Army Veterans, two Navy and one Air Force Veteran. Veterans Affairs supports many of them through the Veterans Monthly Assistance Allowance, which provides a monthly stipend for disabled Veterans training in Paralympic sports. Many of these Veterans have participated in VA’s national rehabilitation events managed by the Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events. Here’s a look at the Marine and Navy vets representing the United States at the games.

Dan Cnossen, Navy, Nordic skiing Two-time Paralympian

Former Navy SEAL and graduate of the US Naval Academy Dan Cnossen graduated from the Naval Academy in 2002 and served until 2009. While platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan, he stepped on an IED and lost both of his legs above the knee. Dan rehabilitated at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and later at Walter Reed National Military Center where he learned to walk again with prosthetic legs.

SEAL EXPERIENCE PROMPTS NEW NOVEL By Elise Cooper MilitaryPress

T

he Terminal List� is a debut thriller by Jack Carr. What makes this book special is that Carr uses his experiences as a SEAL to write a realistic, action-packed story. It takes readers to a time when rules of engagement had the Special Forces acting as cowboys, where they took out the enemy up close and personal as well as from afar with sniper fire. Carr served for more than 20 years with an expertise in communications/intelligence, to leading assault/sniper teams and to practicing counterinsurgency. He uses all this in the story when his hero, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece, seeks revenge after losing almost all his men in an Afghanistan ambush killing 36 SEALs, 28 Rangers and four aircrew members in his unit as well as his wife and child. After finding out that the murders were perpetrated by high-level rogue government and military officials, he creates a list of 12 who must die. Reece has no regrets since he believes he is dying from a terminal brain tumor because the government decided to use his unit for experimentation of a drug that would be used for those with PTSD. Readers will be reminded of Vince Flynn’s books “Term Limits� and “Consent to Kill.� Carefully plotting these assassinations Reece is determined to see that justice is served. JC: I enlisted and became a SEAL sniper specializing in communications and intelligence. Then as a junior officer leading assault and sniper teams in Iraq and Afghanistan, to a platoon commander practicing counterinsurgency in the southern Philippines, to commanding a special operations task unit in the most Iranian influenced section of southern Iraq throughout the tumultuous drawdown of U.S. forces. from active duty in 2016. EC: Did you use your personal experiences in this story? JC: I was lucky to combine two professions I always dreamed of since the age of 7. I took my experiences of studying warfare and the real world and applied it to this story about revenge. I based it on the Samurai warrior mentality that understood they might die while going into warfare. TAKE A LIFE TRIP ON ‘THE LEISURE SEEKER’ Mirren and Sutherland brilliant in poignant film By Jeri Jacquin MilitaryPress

In theaters from director Paolo Virzi and Sony Picture Classics is a film about the journeys we sometimes need to take to appreciate life with “The Leisure Seeker.� Stopping to check on her parents, Jane Spencer (Janel Moloney) discovers they are not at home. Calling brother Will (Christian McKay), it becomes quickly clear that not only are the folks gone — but so is their motor home, called The Leisure Seeker. Family friend Lillian (Dana Ivey) is in a panic wanting them to be found quickly. But Ella Spencer (Helen Mirren) and husband John (Donald Sutherland) are focusing on their trip. Making one stop to call home to reassure them that everything is fine, Ella does her best to explain that they just want a few days for themselves. Ella is the commander-in-chief of the road trip, and it is clear that something is wrong with John. Once a college professor, he now has moments of forgetfulness and random walks that keep her on high alert. Yet, down the road they go, remem-

bering their lives together. Stopping at campgrounds, they spend evenings with one another and even unexpected events on the road are hilarious. But, with all trips down memory lane, each of us remembers things differently, and Ella learns that perhaps some memories are best left unspoken. Mirren as Ella is a woman with the patience of a saint. As Ella and John reminisce about their lives, she is clearly happy with the journey they shared together. That’s not to say there aren’t times of frustration, but their memories and joys are solid in her heart. Mirren is such a fantastic actress, and watching her bring this character such depth and emotion smack forward is a privilege to watch. Sutherland as John is a man who has lived in a world of knowledge that world changes daily. The trip with Ella brings back the memories of their own children growing up and the many students he taught. Feeling that things are slowly becoming out of his control, it takes one sentence to bring out a secret that could fracture them. I love Sutherland’s humor mixed with the snide one-liners from Mirren. It is a dance they do with such finesse. Moloney as Jane starts off worrying, but slowly listens to her mother Ella say they need time together. Backing off, she tries to convince Will to let them have some

time. McKay as Will isn’t as thrilled about the road trip as his sister. Ivey as Lillian has been a friend of the family since their younger years. She believes the trip is insane as well! “The Leisure Seeker� is a film that touches every fiber of a human being. The connection for each of us is that this could quite easily be the story of our own parents. For the parents, it could easily be the story of trying to make life easier

for their children. These two elderly parents want to hit the road and feel the wind on their faces. They want to remember the good that has been their lives and come to terms with the not so good moments. ith NFL Free Agency set to beginning this week, the Chargers will have to make a decision on 24 players whose contracts will expire. Here is a list of the team’s pending free agents (Per Ricky Henne/chargers.com) and the salaries they made in 2017 according to Spotrac. The names printed in bold are the players I believe the Chargers will try to resign. Remember, a roster make over is not needed, the Chargers were just one reliable kicker away from winning the AFC West and making a serious playoff run last season. Unrestricted Free Agents (14): Unrestricted Free Agents have completed four or more accrued seasons. An Unrestricted Free Agent is free to sign with any club with no draft choice compensation owed to his old club. Jerry Attaochu, 25, DE – ($1,050,775). 2017— Recorded just seven tackles in four games. A former second-round pick in 2014, the oft-injured Attaochu has just 83 total tackles, 10 sacks, 2 pass defensed and 2 forced fumbles in four years in the NFL. Tre Boston, 25, S – ($900,000). 2017 — After earning the starting free safety spot in the preseason, Boston started 15 of the 16 games he appeared in. He became an instant leader in the secondary, finishing the season with a team-high five interceptions while totaling 79 tackles and eight passes defensed (each number was a career-high). Having proved his value both on/off the field, Boston should be re-signed to a multi-year deal rather than the one-year deal he signed prior to last season. Spotrac ran Boston’s stats and compared it to other free safeties with similar numbers to estimate his Fair Market

FIRST FEMALE MARINE STUDENTS ARRIVE AT SOI-WEST By Cpl. Andre Heath Marine Corps Installations West

he first female Marine students arrived at School of InfantryWest to begin the first phase of Marine Combat Training on Camp Pendleton on March 6. This marks the first male-female integrated Marine Combat Training Company on the West Coast. “It is important, one team one fight, at the end of the day it’s to show the Marine Corps can produce [Marines] regardless of gender and complete any mission,� said Sgt. Ambar Gonzalez, a combat instructor with Lima Company, SOI-West. Prior to the West Coast’s integration, female Marines attended MCT training exclusively at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, remains the only depot available for females to attend basic training. “The Marine Corps has trained all entrylevel female Marines, both boot camp at Parris Island and Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.� said Lt. Col. Dennis L. Hager II, Headquarter and Support Battalion commander. “Starting today, we took 40 of the women from the

29-day course where entry-level Marines in non-infantry related Military Occupational Specialties are taught the basic skills needed to function in a combat environment. Upon completion of MCT, every Marine will have the knowledge and ability to deploy and operate as a basic rifleman.

Served as an explosive ordinance disposal technician with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, including two tours in Afghanistan and one tour in Iraq Ralph DeQuebec was injured by an IED while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. This resulted in bilateral above the knee amputations for the Marine Corps soldier. He is the recipient of a Purple Heart.

Josh Elliot joined the Marine Corps in 2002 as a combat engineer. He stepped on an improvised explosive device in 2011 on a routine patrol in Afghanistan. This incident resulted in both of his legs being amputated and losing three fingers. He recovered at Walter Reed and the Navy Medical in San Diego. Josh started monoskiing with Disabled Sports USA, which helps wounded warriors participate in adaptive sports, in 2011.

Travis Dodson, a Marine, was struck by a grenade tossed into his room where he was staying in Iraq in February 2007. He lost his left leg and the hip and right leg below the knee. For his service, Dodson received a Purple Heart. While a student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he became involved with several adaptive sports, including sled hockey. He competed in Nordic skiing at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

Kevin Burton served in the Navy from 2002 until 2011. He medically retired three years after being diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa. In 2014, he competed in Nordic Skiing in the Winter Paralympics. Kevin credits the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes, VA and Ignite Adaptive Sports at Eldora for supporting him in the beginning and as his skiing career progressed.

Luke McDermott was injured by an IED while on patrol in Afghanistan in June 2010 with the 1st Battalion 6th Marines. He began his sled hockey career while being rehabilitated at the Center for the Intrepid when his physical therapist asked if he would be interested in playing. He made his U.S. national team debut in 2015.

Injured in Afghanistan in 2012, and began Paralympic-level training in 2015 Jimmy Sides served as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in the Marine Corps. He was trying to disarm an IED in Afghanistan when it exploded. This resulted in losing sight in his left eye and the amputation of his lower right arm.

While serving in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion 5th Marines, Josh Misiewicz was injured by an IED resulting in a double above-knee amputation. He was introduced to sled hockey by a friend that plays for the USA Warriors Sled Hockey Team and ended up making the team, playing three seasons with the Warriors.

Michael Spivey served in the Marine Corps as a combat engineer and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007 and 2010. While in Afghanistan in December 2010, he was injured by an IED.
