DON’T BLAME LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS America has two gun cultures By Frank Miniter
W
hen a mass murder happens in our country, like so many Americans I wring my hands and look for answers – for anything that will stop these monsters. I don’t like to speak out at these times, because as Ecclesiastes correctly tells us there is “a time to every purpose under the heaven, including “a time to mourn. But then someone kicks me in the shin. This time it was CNN media reporter Brian Stelter, saying on CNN’s “New Day that the National Rifle Association and gun owners don’t want to tell the truth about guns. No, the truth that is many in the media refuse to cover the truth about guns and the gun cultures in America. They don’t want to admit there are two wildly different gun cultures in our country. One is the freedomloving, gun-rights culture that upholds the responsible use of guns for hunting, sport and self-defense. The other is the criminal culture that thrives in the places where government restricts gun rights. Not acknowledging that the two cultures exist separately, and instead pretending le-
gal gun owners are responsible for crimes committed by the illegal gun culture in America, isn’t just a lie. It is getting good people killed. In the most recent mass murder last week at a Florida high school, where 14 students and three adults were killed, the FBI failed in its responsibility – not guns or gun owners. That was hardly an anomaly. In many other cases a murderer should have been denied legal access to guns, but the bureaucracy failed us. In other cases, from Columbine High School in Colorado to the Pulse nightclub in Florida, law enforcement opted not to charge in to stop the carnage. They had their own safety in mind, but nevertheless this tells a person who carries concealed that they can’t depend on law enforcement during such a scenario. And no matter how good a job law enforcement agencies do, police cannot be everywhere at all times when criminals may decide to begin murdering innocents. Because of this, disarming responsible and law-abiding gun owners to take away their ability to defend themselves and others is dangerous, and can result in greater loss of lives.

Meanwhile, the big lie being pushed in the media is that guns and the freedom enjoyed by America’s more than 100 million law-abiding gun owners are somehow to blame for murders. That narrative alienates gun owners and misdirects resources away from solving real problems. America’s gun owners aren’t the problem. They are allies in the fight to stop criminals who use guns. Blaming guns also isn’t rational. First of all because guns don’t commit crimes all by themselves, but also because rifles of all types are used in less than 3 percent of murders each year in the U.S., according to FBI uniform crime reports. Semiautomatic firearms aren’t even new – they are a late 19th century invention. The AR-15 (called an “assault weapon in the media, though that is a meaningless political moniker) was first sold to U.S. citizens in 1963, the same year the U.S. Army began buying M16s from Colt. Semiautomatic firearms – pistols, rifles and shotguns – are the most popular sold today for hunting, self-defense and target shooting. As the 1994 law banning assault weapons showed, there is no real way to even define what constitutes an “assault weapon, other than by deciding to ban whatever looks

RETHINKING 10 PAST OSCAR BEST PICTURES ...and movies that should have won
I
t’s an Oscar moment so crazy, everybody knows it by one word: Envelopegate. A year ago at the Academy Awards, the musical “La La Land was named best picture — and then it wasn’t, when the correct envelope revealed indie drama “Moonlight as the true winner. It was as if the gods of cinema inserted themselves to make sure the right movie was honored rather than the one with the guy trying to save jazz. This incident is unlikely to happen again in our lifetimes — it took 89 times to happen in the first place — but on the eve of another movie joining the ranks at the 90th Oscars, we’re rethinking past works deemed best picture and the films that should have conquered them.

BEFORE HALF DOME, THERE WAS IDYLLWILD M
ile High Idyllwild (altitude 1.6 km) and Tahquitz Rock, often called Lily Rock, have received worldwide recognition from rock climbers since the 1930s. In 1947, a “difficulty of climb scale, based on Tahquitz Rock, was established. After the ascent of Half Dome in 1957, the Sierra Club tweaked the values and the ratings, which became known as the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS). Note: Tahquitz Rock is rated 5.9 and Half Dome is 5.12.
The arts community continues to flourish, and in 1998, Idyllwild was named one of100 Best Small Art Towns in America. Today, there are approximately 4,000 year-round residents. An additional 2,000 people live there part-time.
History
What to do
Idyllwild was once the summer home for migrating bands of the desert-dwelling Cahuilla Indians. The area was originally named Strawberry Valley by shepherds who regularly brought their flocks to graze. By the 1880s to early 1900s, there was an arts academy, as well as a sawmill, toll road, post office and tuberculosis sanatorium. Tourists from southern California started showing up. From the 1930s to 1950s, Idyllwild was further settled by buyers of second homes and became famous for the production of hand crafted “knotty pine furniture. In the 1960s and 1970s, hippies (including LSD guru Timothy Leary) discovered Idyllwild, much to the consternation of the locals.
TRAVELS WITH HIAN
by Howard Hian
Idyllwild is a mecca for outdoor sports, including rock climbing, hiking, trail running and walking. There are almost 500 routes around Tahquitz Rock and its neighbor, Suicide Rock. Additionally, there is horseback riding, camping, fishing, bouldering and mountain biking. In the village, pick up an “Explore Idyllwild Map and “Explore Idyllwild Directory. In town you will find restaurants, bars, boutiques, a bakery, gift shops, antique stores and art galleries galore. You will hear live music everywhere. A worthwhile stop is the award-winning Historical Society Museum. RANCHO BERNARDO GRAD HELPS TRAIN NAVY’S BEST By Lt. Bridget Mitchell Navy Office of Community Outreach
FALLON, Nev. — In Nevada’s high desert is the Navy’s premiere tactical air warfare training center, home to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center and it’s Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, known to the world as TOPGUN. A 2016 Rancho Bernardo High School graduate is part of the Navy’s finest aviation fighter training facility in the world. Hospitalman Jared Mortel is a hospital corpsman working with the Naval Branch Health Clinic Fallon stationed aboard Naval Air Station Fallon, Nev. A Navy hospital corpsman is responsible for patient check-ins, administering vitals and briefing the primary care provider before medical exams. “I grew up in Philippines and moved to California four years ago. My father encouraged me to join the military. I decided the best decision was to join the Navy and pursue a career in the medical field, Mortel said. TOPGUN began 48 years ago with the determination of nine pilots, the skepticism of the government and almost no budget, as history would recall. In the early years it turned the tide of a losing air war in Vietnam, revolutionized military
doctrine, inspired a Hollywood blockbuster and attracted and trained the best allied pilots and air crew from all over the world. Mortel plays a crucial role in the overall mission that flies more than 5,000 adversary sorties per year in support of the Navy and Marine Corp Active and Reserve fleet and replacement squadrons, carrier air wings and marine aircraft groups including the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National guard and Canadian Forces. “Nowhere in the world does the Navy have the ability to train as we do in NAS Fallon. The Navy specifically chose NAS Fallon as the location for Top Gun and the Naval Special Warfare Tactical Ground Mobility Training Center because of the desert climate, mountainous terrain, and sophisticated ranges available in northern Nevada. Every Carrier Air Wing and Navy Seal Team is required to receive the essential training provided here prior to being deployed in theater, said Capt. David Halloran, NAS Fallon commanding officer. According to Navy officials, TOPGUN is highly competitive and exposes Navy and Marine Corp pilots to the most demanding training scenarios in fighter aviation lead by some of the most talented pilots in the world. Each pilot is hand-selected for air-to-air and air-to-ground training and

The future of U.S. aviation depends on the Navy’s ability to achieve their vision for defeating tomorrow’s air threats with the support of the ground crews and pilots. “I’m honored to serve in patient care and proud to serve my country as a naturalized citizen. I know my contributions are part of the larger Navy mission, added Mortel.

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a dalmatian dog. The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back, said one youngster. “No, said another, “he’s just for good luck. a 55.8 rebounding rate. They’re also 29th in offensive rebounding percentage, securing 34.4 percent of their own misses. Senior forward Jemerrio Jones is the primary factor down low, averaging 12.7 rebounds per game with 10.7 points and 3.4 assists. Zach Lofton leads NMSU with 19.3 points per game and is one of three other players (Eli Chuha and Johnny McCants) who snatches 4.0 or more boards per game. Additionally, the Aggies boast the 14thstingiest perimeter defense. Their opponents are shooting a mere 30.9 percent from beyond the arc. Its abilities to shut down the three-point game and limit second-chance opportunities make NMSU a nightmare to face.
South Dakota State Jackrabbits
South Dakota State is likely familiar to some because of Mike Daum, who carried the program to the Big Dance last year. This season, the sweet-shooting forward has a little more help. David Jenkins Jr. (15.9 points per game) and Reed Tellinghuisen (12.2) are consistent scorers, and they are shooting 38.8 and 39.9 percent from three-point range, respectively, while attempting 6.3 and 4.6 each contest. Along with Daum (23.6 points; 42.4 three-point percentage on 6.2 attempts) and Skyler Flatten (50.5 on 3.2), that’s a dangerous perimeter group.

Anthony Minghella’s romantic World War II drama is a fine film, though it tests viewers’ patience over the course of three hours. On the other hand, “Fargo spawned a TV series and a fandom for the Coen brothers’ winningly quirky black comedy about murderous deeds and dimwits in snow-covered Minnesota.

Paul Haggis’ interwoven all-star drama about racial tensions in L.A., plagued by mixed reviews and complaints of stereotyping, has caught flak for more than 10 years as an Oscar fail. And it is, especially considering Ang Lee’s timeless and resonant “Brokeback was sitting right there, with Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger as cowboys in a forbidden love affair.

The consensus at the time was that period drama “King’s Speech, with Colin Firth’s George VI working through a troublesome stutter, pulled an upset on David Fincher’s vaunted Facebook bio “The Social Network. Where to stay
A recommendation from a friend brought me to The Grand Idyllwild Lodge, a luxury boutique inn. Designed and built by the owners, its architecture is classic California Craftsman. It delivers a wonderful bed and breakfast experience, with hands-on service and an excellent full breakfast on weekends. Coffee and tea are available all day in the lobby. The rooms feature Wi-Fi, flat screen smart TVs, Keurig coffee and plush bedding.
There’s free parking and it’s a short stroll into town. There are trails on the property, a small sauna, a gym and spa services can be arranged. Only 5-yearsold, it’s already earned a 94 percent “Excellentâ€? rating on TripAdvisor and received AAA’s coveted Four Diamond award. Kudos to innkeepers Brad & Jacki Rechfertig. For reservations and information call (951) 659-2383 or logon to www.GrandIdyllwildLodge.com. Enjoy the journey‌
