WOMEN IN THE MARINE CORPS A CENTURY OF SERVICE
T
he 2018 Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Airshow honors 100 years of women in the Marine Corps. Since World War I, women have served in the Marine Corps contributing to the U.S. victory of multiple wars, battles and conflicts. This year’s airshow is a chance to recognize the accomplishments of women Marines in the past 100 years. On Aug. 13, 1918, more than 300 women stood in line to become United States Marines as World War I was beginning. Opha May Johnson, credited as the first woman Marine, stood in the front of that line and became the very first recruited into the Marine Corps. These women served in administrative fields as typists and stenographers. The recruiting process was very strict for women looking to join the Marine Corps at this time since they were required to already be skilled in working an administrative job to replace the men so they could be sent to support the war efforts. Twenty years later, war broke out in the pacific bringing World War II to its beginning on Sept. 1, 1939. The U.S. didn’t join the conflict until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. After the attack on Pearl Harbor more than 18,000 women joined the Marine Corps. These women served as cooks, radio operators, exchange managers, stenographers and more than 200 other jobs. During this time, Capt. Anne A. Lentz became the first of 200 women to become a commissioned officer in the Marine Corps. Capt. Lentz, a former clothes designer, began working on Marine Corps uniforms when she joined, while other women were often put in charge of female Marines. Following WWI and WWII, women Marines were processed out leaving only about 1,000 left in the Marine Corps. The men returned to their normal jobs and the necessity for women filling those billets was no longer needed. However, this soon changed. In 1948 Congress passed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. The act allowed women to become permanent personnel in the military. In 1955, the U.S. joined its allies in conflict by supporting the South Vietnamese Army. On March 18, 1967, Master Sgt. Barbara Dulinsky voluntarily

became the first woman Marine to serve in a combat zone and started a trend. Following in her footsteps, more than 30 other female Marines volunteered to serve in Vietnam from 1967 to 1973. After almost 20 years, the U.S. pulled their forces out of Vietnam in 1975, but this time the female Marines could keep their jobs due to the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Aug. 2, 1990 marked the start of the Persian Gulf War and another milestone for women Marines and other service members. From 1990 to 1991, more than 40,000 women service members were deployed to the combat zone. In 1991, congress passed an act that allowed women pilots to fly in combat operations. Soon after, in 1995, Lt. Col. Sarah Deal was selected for Naval aviation training and became the first female Marine pilot. On Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S. was attacked leading to the deaths of 2,996 U.S. civilians and more than CENTURY, continued on Page 7

Being a talented golfer isn’t always enough to achieve success in this highly competitive field. Everyone knows that in order to truly succeed in anything, one of the most important things is to practice, practice, practice. In this Instagram shot, Paige is on her way to practice those swings in a very sporty getup. Paige says she loves the thrill of heading to the golf course, because you never know whether you’re going to have the game of your life or having a bad game and consoling yourself over a pint of ice cream “because golf is the hardest game ever. Whether she had a good game or not, Paige looks great.

Guns To Hammers is a veterans support 501c3 nonprofit whose sole mission is to come to the aid of our disabled veterans who come home from their tours of duty less than when they left. Guns To Hammers provides the necessary remodeling ADA work for veterans after they return to their homes and attempt to move forward with their lives — all at no cost to the Veteran. “We provide the much-needed adjustments such as wheelchair ramps, wider doorways, ADA compliant bathrooms and even kitchens if it’s needed, Guns To Hammers CEO JR Smith says. “We do this work because the VA continually fails our veterans, and it’s not right. To this day, Huey Lewis and the News remains one of the defining bands of the ’80s. That spirit of those heady days of youth where achieving all your dreams are possible is captured as the Old Globes kicks off its 2018–2019 season with the World Premier of the musical comedy “The Heart Of Rock & Roll, inspired by the songs of one of the most beloved and iconic acts in music history, Huey Lewis and the News. The Heart Of Rock & Roll opens on Sept. 14 and runs through Oct. 21. The story goes like this: Bobby and his band are hustling for their big break on the Chicago dive bar circuit. But after their latest rejection, Bobby decides it’s “Hip to Be Square, trades in his guitar, and starts “Workin’ for a Livin’ in corporate America. His boss, Cassandra, is having struggles of her own having sacrificed her personal life to climb the company ladder. When they both get a shot at their dreams — for Bobby, another crack at rock stardom, and for Cassandra, a chance to become the CEO — they must decide “If This Is It for their careers, or if “The Power of Love triumphs over all. “The Heart of Rock & Roll celebrates the classic songs of Huey Lewis

TRIP TO THE PAST BY LANCE CPL. ISABELLA ORTEGA 3RD MARINE LOGISTICS GROUP
URASOE, OKINAWA, JAPAN — On April 1, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa began as U.S. Marines and soldiers made their way to the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa. Faced with attacks from Japanese kamikaze pilots, Japanese soldiers positioned in underground tunnels and the Yamato, the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleship ever constructed, the Americans fought a grueling 83-day battle and ultimately suffered over 82,000 casualties. The Battle of Okinawa was the last battle of World War II. One of the most historic events during the Battle of Okinawa took place at Maeda Escarpment, Okinawa, Japan, or Hacksaw Ridge. The battle on Hacksaw Ridge took place on a 400-foot cliff and lasted 11 days. The Japanese soldiers utilized underground tunnels and bunkers across the ridge, which forced American troops to scale the cliff-like terrain to get to the enemy. Both sides bore heavy losses, but on May 6, 1945, the Americans gained control of Hacksaw Ridge. Over 73 years later, U.S. Marines and Sailors revisited the battleground to pay

their respects and learn the history of Hacksaw Ridge. Service members with Headquarters Company, Headquarters Regiment, 3rd Marine Logistics Group hiked through the hallowed battleground September 7, 2018. While ascending the ridge, the tour guide helped them discover what transpired at each historic location. “When you come to Okinawa and come to these battle sites, you get a chance to stand in their footsteps on these fields and understand more about what happened, Chris Majewski, a tour guide with Marine Corps Community Services Tours+, said. Majewski led the group atop Hacksaw Ridge and explained details of the battle. He told the group about Cpl. Desmond Doss, a U.S. Army Medal of Honor recipient, who, as a private first class, single-handedly saved the lives of over 75 people on Hacksaw Ridge during the Battle of Okinawa. Majewski said Doss was one of many soldiers who led to the success of the Americans. He explained that the battle site represents more than just the efforts of those brave troops. “It’s important to take the tours because this is our history, our back-

ground, this is why we’re here, he said. “If you don’t learn your history, you’re doomed to repeat it. According to one of the tourists, Lance Cpl. James C. Craghead, a data systems administrator with HQ Reg., 3rd MLG, his experience at Hacksaw Ridge helped him learn more about the men who shed blood for their country. He said the tour reminded him that the troops who fought at Hacksaw Ridge were service members just like him. “It takes going there and seeing it, for most people, to imagine what we could potentially go through ourselves, Crag-
head said. Craghead said it was a reality check to get the Hacksaw Ridge tour because it made him realize that it wasn’t too long ago that troops were making sacrifices in the very place he stood. Majewski said he has dedicated the past 20 years of his life to telling people about the brave actions of the Americans who fought on Hacksaw Ridge. He said he conducts tours of the battle site twice a month, or whenever he is requested by a specific unit, because it is important to him that those troops are never forgotten.

o they’re not ... they’re already here! The Russians are here and they’ve been here for quite some time. They have infiltrated our politics, our social, economic and educational systems. The Democrats blame the Republicans and the Republicans blame the POINT Democrats, but the real culprit is our ignorance to recognize the control that Russia and Vladimir Putin have on the hearts, minds and souls of all good Americans. Through online trolls, fake social meRICHARD T. MATZ dia profiles and fake news, they’ve managed to get all races — black, brown, yellow and white — and even our Religions to war against each other. Everybody recognizes the divisions in our country have never been as great as they are today. sexist, anti-racist, anti-homophobic and anti-capitalist — what can we expect? Every country in the world has problems, some have more than others, but make no mistake: We are still the greatest country on this Earth! We will continue to be so if we just stop the name-calling, blame gaming and finger pointing and realize every person has a right to their own opinions and we must
give each person — regardless of those opinions — respect. The hatred toward our president has never been so extreme in the history of the United States. What we must understand is we elected a man to be our president who was above and beyond politics. Please do not misjudge our president. He can be crude and he can be rude, but he was elected by half of this country because our elected officials have proven they have no ability to run our country. Our politicians on both sides of the aisle, both Democrats and Republicans, have become part of the swamp! Every country has its swamp. The people in charge of those swamps put themselves above the common good of their countries. But in spite of the swamp, in spite of being rude and crude, Donald Trump has proven to move America’s interests forward. Ignore the fake news and the Russian propaganda. With so much antagonism against him, what other man in his position could ever do so much? God bless America and God bless the president of the United States!
READER RESPONSE
MAKE TREATMENT SAME FOR ALL Mr. Matz, I’ve read your article on the need for I.C.E. (MilitaryPress, Aug. 15). I agree on the part about anyone having to do anything with that gang should be deported and cancelled the privileges of having a visa of any kind from the United States. And perhaps the idea of keeping I.C.E. would be not that bad if they were to do something positive, but obviously there is a reason the governRESPONSE, continued on Page 15 10 4FQU

which has created the Guns To Hammers IPA. The Guns To Hammers IPA will be tapped at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the Mike Hess Brewing Miramar location at 7955 Silverton Ave, Suite 1201. Joining in the fun on the evening will be one of San Diego’s favorite bands, The Nowhere Men, who will go on stage at 6 p.m. I am told there will be several special guests that evening as a surprise. “We are really honored to be partnering up with the veteran support group Guns To Hammers construction, says Mike Hess. “As their official SD brewery, we are launching our very own Guns to Hammers IPA at all MHB locations. “As a veteran-owned business, we are thankful for a way to give back and help in a real, tangible way, Hess added. “Some of the proceeds from the sale of GTH IPA will be directly contributed to the modifications of homes of disabled vets — and the first $10,000 that we raise through this beer’s sale will go to a local vet’s home. “Hoo-ya. Come get some. “I couldn’t be more excited to team up with Mike Hess Brewing on this endeavor, Smith said. “First off, as a former lieutenant commander in our Navy, Mike gets it, he understands the initiative and the sense of urgency behind it. Secondly, he runs a worldclass operation. Behind the scenes, he uses the most modern, up-to-date and state-of-the-art equipment money can buy, enabling him to consistently produce high-quality beer. “And third — and probably the most important — his beer is superb. Mike is a perfect fit for us at GTH, and we are honored that he chose our foundation as his conduit to give back to our veterans in need. In June, while on their 2018 National Tour, GTH announced that they have teamed up with the San Diego nonprofit NOLAH to provide a muchneeded kitchen remodel for a disabled veteran. This project will be the recipient of the first $10,000 raised by the Mike Hess Brewing Guns To Hammers IPA. Mike Hess Brewing will continuously offer a Guns To Hammers IPA tap at all three San Diego locations, so if you are unable to make it to the tap event, you can still try this tasty IPA on your next visit. For more information about Mike Hess Brewing and its current line-up of beers, you can check out the brewery’s website at www.mikehessbrewing. com or visit its Facebook page. Boxing is described as a combat sport in which two people engage in a game of speed, reflexes, strength and will. Boxers throw punches at each other with the main goal of weakening and knocking down the foe. Boxing is regarded as one of the highest-paying sports and one of the most popular sports of all time. Over the years, boxing has produced several famous boxers. Some boxers become popular due to their speed, boxing style or number of belts won. Mainstream appeal and performance on the ring are also considered for a boxer to be included in the greatest list.
THE GREAT WHO WAS THE BEST BOXER OF ALL TIME?
E
BY PETER NAGY QUORA.COM
xperts as well as the best-informed fans generally narrow the best boxers down to Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali. Robinson was a perfectly skilled, right-handed ringman who fought out of the orthodox stance. He was quick of foot and hand, a great defender, loaded with stamina, took a good punch and hit with enormous power as a welterweight and periodically as a middleweight. He was capable of fighting any style — jabbing and moving, or wading in to destroy the opposition with hooks and uppercuts. His record was 174–19, with 109 knockouts, and only one KO loss against light heavyweight champion Joey Maxim. The Sugarman wilted in extreme heat, not from the punches of “Slapsy Maxie. Before Robinson’s exit in that fight, the heat had already KOed the referee, Ruby Goldstein. The 19 losses are very misleading. Robinson was 49–0 before losing his first fight to the bigger Jake LaMotta and 128– 1–2 before losing the middleweight championship to Randy Turpin. He also faced much bigger men as a middleweight, and kept fighting long after age robbed him of his skills. He is almost inarguably the greatest welterweight of all time. Ali is the only boxer commonly considered as a challenger for recognition as the greatest of all time pound for pound. Ali had skills similar to Robinson’s but a different style. He was a right-handed fighter with hands faster than Robinson’s, even though he was a heavyweight. He had lightning footwork and the unorthodox habit of

keeping his hands low, but relying on his agility and reflexes to avoid punches by leaning away from them. The younger Ali danced around the ring, flicking his jab and lead right to weaken his opponents, then moving in to throw heavier leather and finishing them off with hooks and uppercuts when they were hurt. For some reason he hardly ever threw a body punch. He relied on the accumulation of blows to score KOs in most of his bouts — never having the crushing power of Robinson as a welterweight. Ali’s style changed after losing almost four years of his prime due to a conviction for refusing to allow himself to be drafted into military service. He returned to action when the conviction was finally overturned, but had
XXX NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN t OFXT!NJMJUBSZQSFTT DPN
TEST EVER lost some of his foot speed and stamina needed to dance the entire fight. Instead, he traded punches with oppnents, relying on his defense and incredibly sturdy jaw to outlast them. In this mode he showed one of the sturdiest jaws in the history of the sport, and earned a winning record against the best heavyweights in what is recognized as the Golden Age of Heavyweights. He finished his career at 65–5, with 37 KOs and one loss by TKO. The TKO was against Larry Holmes when Ali had lost his great skills. So were two other losses, one to Leon Spinks, which he avenged, and to Trevor Berbick in his last fight. The brief review above does not settle the question who was the greatest, Muhammad Ali, Ray Robinson or perhaps another fighter, like Floyd Mayweather, as his most ardent fans say. There is no indisput-

able way of determining the question. Robinson receives the nod for having such an unmatchable record as a welterweight, and Ali for his early untouchable brilliance and for his dominance over the best heavyweight field of all time. My personal choice is Ali, not only for his boxing exploits, but as the indisputably most remarkable personality ever to step foot into a professional ring. A natural entertainer, he promoted his fights by addressing his opponents with the comical nicknames he made up for them and by using poetry to predict the round in which he would win. The man could easily have been a professional comedian, and he even played the piano, and deftly performed a number of magic tricks. He was also a major early critic of the American Vietnam War effort. He transcended boxing so thoroughly, that he became the most recognized person in the world. There will never be an- other Ali.
