The best quotes from

‘Mad Dog’ Mattis

An account by John R. Guardiano, a former Marine who not only met but conversed in depth with Mattis, sums up the general’s character best.

Both the left and the right are wrong about Marine Corps Lt. Gen. James N. Mattis. He is neither the Jack Nicholson caricature of a Marine depicted in the 1992 movie A Few Good Men nor the callous and mad eccentric depicted by George C. Scott in the 1970 movie Patton. And Gen. Mattis didn’t just talk the talk; he walked the walk. He led from the front. Indeed, on at least one occasion that I know of, the General was bloodied from a firefight or improvised explosive device while out on patrol with junior, enlisted Marines one-third his age. That’s what makes Gen. Mattis such a great warrior: He truly respects and cares for his Marines. “Guardiano,” he told me, “I don’t give a damn about the officers. If they don’t like what they’re doing, they can get on a plane and leave the Corps — go back where they came from. But I do care deeply about those 18and 19-year-old Lance Corporals out on the frontlines.” — From The American Spectator

“You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.” Mattis has

“Marines don’t know how to spell the word defeat”

As a highly-educated four-star General, Mattis probably can spell it, but he wants his Marines to know that they should never let it happen.

often talked to Marine leaders about staying sharp. The “dream world” he alludes to is a reference to a complacent attitude -- one that can cost lives if troops aren’t vigilant.

“If in order to kill the enemy you have to kill an innocent, don’t take the shot. Don’t create more enemies than you take out by some immoral act.”

As a co-author of the military’s counterinsurgency manual (with David Petraeus), Mattis has often spoke about following the rules of engagement and being disciplined among a ruthless enemy.

“I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.” The General is confident in his abilities

and that of his Marines -- he led the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade into Afghanistan in 2001, the 1st Marine Division into Iraq in 2003, and led an operation into Fallujah in 2004 dubbed “Operation Vigilant Resolve”, and helped to plan the later “Operation Phantom Fury.”

“You are part of the world’s most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.”

This line from his 2003 letter to his Marines foreshadows his contribution in 2006 to counter-insurgency doctrine, which stresses battlefield discipline, and protection of the civilian populace.

4 September 15, 2013 THE MILITARY PRESS

“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.”

Some Mattis quotes don’t come without a degree of controversy, including this one. Said while speaking about his time on the ground in Afghanistan, he was later counseled by his boss Gen. Hagee, who said “he should have chosen his words more carefully.”

“Treachery has existed as long as there’s been warfare, and there’s always been a few people that you couldn’t trust.”

In places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, alliances can often shift quickly. Mattis spoke to Congress on this point after a series of green-on-blue attacks that left military leaders struggling to deal with.

“PowerPoint makes us stupid.” As a top General, we can safely assume that Mattis has had to sit through his fair share

$

of awful PowerPoint briefings.

“The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.”

He often emphasizes to his troops that they need to be problem solvers, only using firepower as a last result.

“There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don’t think you do. It’s just business.”

Many Marines look up to Mattis as a cult-like figure. Nevertheless, he will most likely be remembered as a consummate professional. A Marine officer we spoke with said, “the more I learned about him, the more I saw that the things we were doing right seemed to be associated with his philosophy of command.”

“A country that armed Stalin to defeat Hitler can certainly work alongside enemies of al-Qaida to defeat al-Qaida.”

The General is a student of history and avid reader. He often stresses the importance of education and training on building effective future leaders.

“The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some *******s in the world that just need to be shot. There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.”

“We’ve backed off in good faith to try and give you a chance to straighten this problem out. But I am going to beg with you for a minute. I’m going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.”

Mattis demonstrates that he is willing to extend an olive branch to those on the fence -- but always carries the weight of Marine firepower if that doesn’t work out.

“I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I’ll kill you all.” After the initial Iraq invasion, “Chaos” (his radio callsign) sent home his tanks and artillery and used the “carrot and the stick” with Iraqi tribal leaders.

Speaking to his Marines at al Asad, he tried to motivate them to stay sharp and continue the mission. He ended the speech, telling them in Patton-esque fashion, “I feel sorry for every son of a b---- that doesn’t get to serve with you.”

American apology for Guantanamo? (This letter was emailed to the Military Press with the following note: “Please consider the article on torture below for publication. It’s by University of Richmond Law School Professor and prominent human rights activist Azizah Y. al-Hibri. In her piece, Azizah offers an expert firsthand perspective on how American Muslims perceive America’s recent history of torture. She goes on to argue that America cannot regain the respect of the Muslim world until it acknowledges its torturous past -- and closes the most notorious symbol of that past, the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Azizah immigrated to the United States from the Middle East -- so she brings unique insight to this issue.”

Torture admission would help restore U.S. standing in world

By Azizah Y. al-Hibri I was a child in Beirut, Lebanon, when my American teacher told me the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. She also told me about Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves. I never forgot these stories and felt immediately that I had kindred spirits across the ocean. Many years later, I became a United States citizen and held my head high as an American. I believed in this country’s constitutional and ethical values -- and most of all, in its justice. Then 9/11 happened and our world changed forever. I was supposed to meet with President Bush at the White House that afternoon; instead we met a few days later at the Islamic Center of Washington when he spoke to the nation in support of American Muslims. At the time, we Muslims weren’t as concerned about the blowback as we were about U.S. security and the victims of 9/11. And then came the aftershock: wars

Camp Delta entrance to the Joint Task Force’s Guantanamo Bay facility. in Afghanistan and Iraq, more bloodshed, and foreign detainees. The prison at Guantanamo Bay opened. Stories about incredible acts of torture while interrogating detainees trickled in. Initially, American Muslims refused to believe. Not this country, not our presi-

BAIL BONDS

dent. But facts are stubborn, and we had to yield to them. It didn’t have to be this way. Torture is illegal and immoral, and there is no persuasive evidence that its use against suspected terrorists produced actionable intelligence or helped save lives. The conventional interrogation techniques the United States has used throughout its history are effective. There was no justification for abandoning them -- no matter how heinous the crimes committed on 9/11. That decision cost this country dearly. The United States can regain its moral stature in the global Muslim community -- but will never do so if it refuses to confront the abuses of the past. Like its first president, George Washington, America needs to readily admit the truth -- as painful as it may be. More than ten years after 9/11, the claim that this information must remain classified to protect national security is unfounded. President Obama must direct executive branch agencies to declassify evidence of abusive practices — with redactions only where needed to protect specific individuals or honor diplomatic agreements. The best place to start would be with the information underlying the recently completed -- but still secret -- Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report on the CIA’s interrogation program. According to senators famil-

iar with it, the report — based on more than 6 million pages of classified documents — debunks the myth that torture saved lives. Allowing the public to see and evaluate all the facts for itself is the first step toward ensuring that we will never again commit torture in the name of freedom. But simply declassifying information is not sufficient to restoring America’s image in the Muslim community. The notorious Guantanamo prison — a symbol of U.S. torture and abuse post 9/11 — must also close. One hundred sixty-six detainees remain at Guantanamo, even though the U.S. government has already cleared 86 for transfer. The seemingly indefinite detention of these individuals under deteriorating conditions led to a massive hunger strike; at one point, more than 40 detainees were being force-fed through a painful and degrading procedure that violates established principles of medical ethics. In recent years, nearly as many detainees have died in custody as have been released-a trend that could worsen if the hunger strike continues. During his counterterrorism speech in May, President Obama asked us to “[i]magine a future — 10 years from now or 20 years from now — when the United States of America is still holding people who have been charged with no crime on a piece of land that is not part of our country... Is that something our Founders foresaw? Is that the America we want to leave our children?” The answer to both questions is a resounding “no.” If the president wants to avoid that future, he must act. He has the authority to immediately begin transferring prisoners out of Guantanamo, and he must use it. Taking these steps will go a long way toward repairing the damage done after 9/11 and restoring respect and admiration for our country in the Muslim world. If America rededicates itself to its traditional values, the values I learned as a little girl in Beirut, its light can shine brightly once again. Azizah Y. al-Hibri is a professor emerita at the University of Richmond School of Law, and the founder and chairwoman of KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights. She is a member of The Constitution Project’s Task Force for Detainee Treatment.

Muslim males. 17.  In 2013, Boston marathon bombers.. Muslim males. I think the professor is out of her blanking mind! Her American citizenship should be taken away from her if she thinks the American people owe her or any other Muslim an apology for any punishment handed out to the criminal spies that participated in the 9/11 tragedies. War (though undeclared) was initiated by radical Muslims in the 9/11 attacks. In the time of war, all spies can be executed according to the Geneva Convention. The information garnered in the prison at Guantanamo is still classified and we do not yet know the value of the evidence obtained. But if it spared one American citizen’s life or the agony and grief it creates for family, then Guantanamo was worth it! No, I really don’t see a reason here to justify an apology? Are these 17 incidents merely coincidence? So, to ensure that Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, what type of an apology would you like us to make? Do you think the American people have completely lost their minds, or just their power of reason? And by the way…. May 13, 1981: LET’S NOT FORGET THAT JOHN PAUL II WAS SHOT BY Mehmet Ali Agca in an attempt to kill the head of the Roman Catholic Church.... by a Muslim male. So to you, professor… get your facts straight before you send your information out to be published. In closing, I ask, “Do we really want young Americans to be subjected to this type of learning from a professional?”

We always look forward to your comments, critique and kudos. email: rmatz@militarypress.com editorsdesk@militarypress.com For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

New DoD website helps military find quality child care Families at Naval Base San Diego, Naval Base Coronado and Naval Base Point Loma now have access to a new Department of Defense (DoD) Request for Care website. MilitaryChildCare.com provides a centralized online gateway for families to access all DoD-wide child and youth care options. The secure DoD site - which was tested exclusively at Nellis AFB and at installations throughout Hawaii over the past year - is designed to simplify and improve the care search process for

military families and DoD civilians, thereby enhancing family readiness. MIlitaryChildCare.com will provide families with general information about all full-time and part-time, on-installation, DoD-certified care options, including child development centers, family child care and schoolage care. Families search for care based on their needs and preferences, at which time they receive a list of all DoDwide care options that match their search parameters. Upon viewing detailed descriptions of the

programs, families submit requests and download select forms. Instead of being assigned a waitlist number, families will be informed about anticipated placement times, so that they can better plan for care. Child and youth programs will notify them when a space becomes available, and the enrollment process will remain the same. Families that are currently on waitlists will transition to the new webbased system. These families will retain the original date of their request(s) for care. For more info, go to MilitaryChildCare.com or contact MilitaryChildCare. com Customer Support at 855.696.2934 or FamilySupport@MilitaryChildCare. com.

This is the first in a series where we informally sit down and speak with the commanding officer of various military units. Simply called the C.O., he/she is responsible for everything, and I do mean everything that happens within their command. They are tasked with responsibilities from making sure the unit can complete what every mission handed to them to handling personnel training and issues that might crop up. I am honored to introduce Lt. Colonel Chris “Cliff” Henger (pronounce as Hanger) to you. He is the new commanding officer of Marine Fighter Training Squadron VMFAT-101, known as the “Sharpshooters.” The Sharpshooters are based at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar. Henger took command of VMFAT-101, The Sharpshooters, just a few short months ago. This squadron is responsible for the training of new Marine and Navy F/A-18 Hornet pilots after they finish their initial flight training at Pensacola, Florida, and advanced training at Naval Air Station Corpus Christy, Texas. Lt. Col Henger graduated from University of New Mexico in May of 1991 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. While he had a good paying job, working in restaurant management, he knew that it wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life, and knew it was not to be his future. He was commissioned a second lieutenant via the Officer Candidate’s Course in April 1993. While originally planning to have a career on land, the Marine Corps had a different path for him to follow. After graduating The Basic School in October 1992, he reported to NAS Pensacola, Florida for flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in February 1996.

With Republicans raising legal issues and “unfair” echoing across military communities, Defense officials are reviewing a two-week old policy to allow up to 10 days of special “marriage leave” for gay and lesbian members assigned more than 100 miles from a state where they can marry legally. Instead of unearned leave, which might need to be backed by statute, commands might be encouraged to grant up to 10 days’ “administrative absence.” The intent still would be to give homosexual service members extra time off to travel to where samesex marriage is allowed, and thus qualify them sooner for full benefits including spousal medical care and “with dependents” housing allowances, military and congressional sources confirm. It’s time to seize control of America’s energy future By Chris Faulkner, CEO of Breitling Energy Companies. Don’t expect oil prices to fall any time soon. Although domestic oil production is expanding rapidly, oil is once again over $100 per barrel, largely due to political unrest in the Middle East. The mere threat of a disruption in oil shipments is enough to increase prices. Just imagine what a full-on blockade in, say, the Suez Canal or the Suez-Mediterranean Pipeline would do to the U.S. energy market. With the Syrian conflict spilling over into neighboring countries, and Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) members aligning on different sides in the struggle, the situation is ripe for a surge in prices. If Israel and Iran heat up, we could see oil prices soaring to $150. America is not yet energy independent. But despite the recent spike in oil prices, our long-term energy outlook is bright. The ongoing domestic oil boom has given us the means and opportu-

nity to break free from the tyranny of oil imports from hostile nations — but only if the United States does all it can to increase and encourage domestic energy production. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude — the benchmark for domestic oil prices — has been increasing. That’s good news for the futures market, and suggests the WTI is back as the world’s leading oil benchmark. And that’s just the start of America’s sunny energy outlook. The U.S. government recently doubled its estimates of recoverable energy in North Dakota’s Bakken and Three Forks shale formations, to 7.4 billion barrels of oil and 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. And, according to the IEA, America is on track to surpass Saudi Arabia in oil output by 2017. At the same time, OPEC is steadily losing relevance. OPEC — a cartel including several member nations with alarming amounts of Islamist violence — recently announced it expects demand for its oil to drop by 300,000 barrels a day next year, and projections for future demand for OPEC oil are flattening even as OPEC members compete

more fiercely with each other for market share. For far too long, America’s economy has been at the mercy of the politically unstable and anti-American Middle East. Now, the tides are shifting. Oil production from non-OPEC countries is expected to rise next year by 1.2 million barrels a day. And most of that new production is coming from the United States and Canada. What’s more, Saudi Arabia’s and other oil infrastructure in the Middle East has been increasingly under attack by terrorists who are seeking to disrupt global markets by blocking oil production and transportation. Vast networks of pipelines are unprotected and vulnerable, and the terrorists know it. However, our lawmakers can’t afford to take the trend toward true energy independence for granted. The only real threat to American energy security is, well, America. Politics could compromise this country’s energy boom. Take the regulatory restrictions on hydraulic fracturing, popularly known as “fracking.” The recent oil and gas boom is the result of advances in this technology, in tandem with advances in horizontal

drilling. In fracking, a solution that is 99.5 percent sand and water, plus a few trace chemicals, is pumped underground at high pressure to break up rock formations. Despite the fact that over a million wells have been fracked in America with an unparalleled safety record, radical environmentalists have been trying to sway public opinion against fracking. They’re deploying easily debunked propaganda. There’s simply no real evidence that fracking pollutes groundwater, causes earthquakes or is responsible for any of the other outrageous claims being made against the practice.

Expect what you inspect

The pros and cons of fracking By Michael Turek Energy policy is almost always controversial, and relatively new technology is often at the forefront of arguments. In most cases, a particular development may not be overwhelmingly positive or negative, and decisions must be based on nuance and by comparing new developments to old methods of generating energy. In recent years, fracking has been a source of considerable controversy; here are some of the pros and cons of fracking and how it is affecting the energy industry.

What is fracking?

In the military we are constantly performing tests and inspections. Preparing for them can be a long and labor-intensive process. But during preparation for these inspections, areas in need of improvement are often identified. The need to review and improve processes cannot be underestimated. In the Navy we hold regular inspections to test the integrity of our ships, aircraft, and submarines and the preparedness of our Sailors. There are also reviews such as Personnel Inspections in which the condition of our Sailors’ uniforms and their grooming standards are assessed. Then there are Zone Inspections in which we check the cleanliness and safety of our command work spaces. I personally go one step further and conduct Departmental Personnel and Zone Inspections every month, because the military bearing of your personnel and the professionalism of your work spaces reflect directly on your leadership. The motto I live by is “Don’t get ready, stay ready In the military, it is imperative to check the integrity of programs and identify weaknesses early on because we have the awesome responsibility of protecting our country. Many of us

also apply these same principles in our daily lives. Reviewing your child’s report card, balancing your checkbook and getting routine maintenance done on your vehicle are simple processes that, if neglected, could have dire consequences. So the bottom line is, if you INSPECT nothing, EXPECT anything. Sherry D. Strothers is a life coach and Lipstick Leader founder. Energy providers in Texas and elsewhere have been proponents of natural gas for decades. Natural gas is abundant in the United States, but exploiting it has always been difficult. Thanks to fracking technology, it is now possible to drill both vertically and horizontally to tap into natural gas reserves that were previously inaccessible. Fracking has revolutionized energy production in the United States and elsewhere in the world, and most experts view natural gas as perhaps the most important fuel for the future.

What are its advantages?

Thanks to fracking, generating electricity with natural gas is now approximately the same cost of generating electricity with coal. Because of this, the United States now has a much more diverse energy portfolio. In addition, natural gas releases two to three times less carbon into the atmosphere than coal, and it releases far less particulate matter as well. While green energy advocates prefer technology that releases little to no carbon dioxide, the improvements provided by natural gas can slow the progression of global warming and allow the United States to meet energy goals. Natural gas plants are also relatively cheap to build, and they can be scaled easily to meet energy demands. Because of this, natural gas is expected to be the baseline energy source of choice for the foreseeable future.

What are its disadvantages?

Most of the controversy surrounding natural gas has to do with fracking. Studies have shown that fracking does cause small earthquakes, which can damage homes. However, it should be noted that these earthquakes are relatively small, and some experts believe that these small earthquakes relieve pressure that could have caused larger earthquakes in the future. Fracking also uses a tremendous amount of water that contains chemicals and other environmentally damaging materials. Runoff from fracking operations can cause tremendous environmental harm, and some regulators believe that current regulations are not strict enough to prevent this harm. Finally, fracking brings up a number of land rights issues. Since fracking involves horizontal drilling, disputes often arise over whether a fracking company has access to certain segments of land underground. While fracking will remain controversial, it is difficult to imagine a future where fracking is not an important component of energy generation. Although it is not a perfect technology, natural gas will likely allow the United States and other nations to reduce their carbon outputs considerably while maintaining their energy generation and avoiding the costs associated with solar power. Those interested in energy generation should ensure that they are abreast of the latest developments in fracking technology.

What’s your home’s price tag now? This content is provided courtesy of USAA. As the housing market appears to be bouncing back in many parts of the country, you may be wondering: What’s my residence worth now? There’s actually more than one answer, according to Scott Halliwell, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner at USAA. He says your home has three, potentially very different, price tags based on its: • Market value • Replacement value • Property tax value “Since different values can be used for different reasons, it’s important to understand when each applies,” Halliwell explains, adding that some of these values may move in different directions at the same time.

Here’s a description of the values and why you should understand each one.

Market Value

What Is It? Market value is the dollar amount that homes in your area are bought and sold for. It’s the measure most homeowners think of when they try to estimate their home’s worth or value. Determined in part by the going rate for similar houses in your city and neighborhood, and even on your street, market value is not based on what you paid for the home or how much it cost you to finish out the basement, re-roof or remodel the kitchen. Many intangibles, such as curb appeal, location, amenities and condition, factor into this figure.

Why It’s Important Understanding the market value helps you calculate your total net worth as well as how much equity you have in your home. To calculate the equity you have in your home, simply subtract the amount you owe on your home from its market value: That’s your equity, or about how much profit you could receive from a sale. That’s money you could use in a variety of ways: • To buy a bigger house. • To trade equity for cash in case of an emergency.

• To pad your savings account if you downsize to a smaller home. • To pay down debt, if you choose to rent and free yourself from a mortgage. To strengthen your negotiating position with potential buyers, get an accurate idea of your home’s market value. A real estate agent can tell you the selling prices of similar homes in your area, helping you set reasonable expectations. “If your area is in a buyer’s market, your home’s market value may be lower than you’d like. You might not have as much leverage against a buyer who wants to negotiate, so you need to know where you’re starting,” Halliwell explains. A real estate agent who walks through the property, inside and out, can provide an estimate of your home’s market value and offer advice on making your home more attractive to prospective buyers. Even if you’re planning to stay in your home, market value matters when taking out a home equity line of credit or home equity loan. For example, you may be planning a major kitchen redo and need $40,000, or you want to tap your equity to help pay your kids’ college tuition. Depending on your creditworthiness, many lenders will allow you to borrow up to 85% of your home’s value, less any mortgage or other equity loan on that property. Also, a lender may order an appraisal to determine the market value of your home.

Replacement Value

What Is It? If your home is completely destroyed because of, say, a fire or natural disaster, replacement cost is the amount it would cost to remove all debris and rebuild the entire structure from the ground up based on current construction costs in your area. Granted, very few claims are total losses, says Cedric Matterson, a senior staff underwriter with USAA. But if you’re a victim of a fire that consumes your whole house, or your home is in the path of a vicious storm, you’ll be relieved to have a homeowners insurance policy that covers the entire financial burden of rebuilding. “Our philosophy, which is backed by years of experience, is that homes should be insured for 100% of the minimum estimated replacement cost,” Matterson says.

Military hasn’t sorted out rules on ‘vaping’ By Patricia Kime MilitaryTimes.com Jon Bunte started smoking when he turned 18, a habit picked up from a friend that appeared to ease his chronic headaches. He continued to smoke when he joined the Air Force, but about midway through his first enlistment, searching for a less dirty way to satisfy his nicotine cravings, he tried an electronic cigarette, or e-cig. Even though experience was wholly unsatisfying, sending him scrambling for a pack of Marlboro Menthol Lights, he tried again this past March, for the same reason. And according to Bunte, he hasn’t smoked a tobacco cigarette since. “Smoking was affecting my health. It made running difficult, and waking up coughing up phlegm is no way to start a day. … Vaping gives you all

of the effects of smoking without the nasty bad ones,” Bunte says. Once a curiosity at mall kiosks, ecigs are popping up on tobacco shelves, in smoke shops and at military exchanges, which began carrying the battery-powered devices within the past

two months. Since May, sales of e-cigs in the Army and Air Force exchanges alone topped 28,600. Celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Lindsay Lohan have been spotted vaporizing, or “vaping,” in Los Angeles, and major tobacco companies

like R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard have waded into the market. But as e-cigs grow in popularity, government regulators and the military services are sorting out what rules should apply to these accessories, which turn a nicotine-infused liquid like propylene glycol or vegetable glycerine into an inhalable vapor. The Food and Drug Administration has yet to impose rules on e-cigs but has said it likely will add them to the list of tobacco products regulated by the agency sometime this year. The military services already treat them as if they are tobacco products, restricting their use to designated smoking areas. Among the concerns the FDA has about the gadgets are long-term health consequences, quality-control issues and marketing, especially questions over whether children and teens may be drawn to them. The e-cigs are available not only in tobacco and menthol flavors but in popcorn, chocolate, caramel machiatto and one of Bunte’s favorites, strawberry vanilla cupcake. Vapers and manufacturers say they are much safer than cigarettes, but no studies have been done on their longterm health effects, mainly because they’re relatively new to the market. A German study published in late June found that some liquids used in ecig cartridges contain volatile organic compounds, acetone, formaldehyde and other chemicals. The German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg also found that they produce secondhand vapors that may affect nonusers. Still, users say they feel better after having switched from traditional cigarettes to electronic ones. Bunte, for example, says his teeth are cleaner, he sleeps more soundly and no longer wheezes or coughs during exercise. “They aren’t branded as a [smoking cessation tool], but I feel they are a great tool for it,” Bunte says. In the coming months, consumers will have more choices for vaping as the large tobacco companies jump into the e-cig market. Altria, maker of Marlboro, will launch MarkTen this summer in Indiana in preparation for a national rollout. Lorillard, which manufactures Newport and Kent cigarettes, purchased Blu Ecigs in 2012 and has been expanding its availability at retail stores. And this month, R.J. Reynolds, maker of Winston and Pall Mall cigarettes, will introduce its Vuse e-cigarette in Colorado, also eyeing a national expansion. Company believe their U.S.-made e-cig will be an industry game-changer, offering such a consistent experience that smokers who try one will continue using it. “In studying the market, there is high trial of electronic cigarettes but low adoption. There have been quality-control issues. These are things we wanted to address,” says Richard Smith, communications manager for Reynolds American. Bunte says smokers often don’t stick with e-cigs because they try inexpen‘VAPING,’ cont’d. on Page 25

Meet the world’s most powerful mobster By Palash Ghosh Ibtimes.com Imagine a mobster that comprised the cunning of Lucky Luciano, the brilliance of Meyer Lansky, the ferocity of Vito Genovese, the duplicity of Carmine Galante and the massive wealth of Pablo Escobar. Such a person is not the fantasy creation of some novelist or screenwriter, but rather a reallife flesh-and-blood monster that lives among us. Semion Mogilevich looks nothing like Marlon Brando nor Al Pacino. The short, bald, pockmarked, grossly obese, 66-year-old Ukrainian is believed by international law enforcement agencies to be one of the most powerful criminals on earth. The Moscow resident reportedly holds Russian, Ukrainian, Greek and Israeli passports. Among a litany of crimes, Mogilevich allegedly defrauded thousands of investors in the US and Canada in the 1990s, netting him at least $150 million. He also served as the chief of Inkombank, a Russian financial institution, which was accused of money

laundering. Indicted in 2003, Mogilevich is currently one of the FBI’s ten most wanted fugitives, wanted for wire fraud, RICO conspiracy, mail fraud, money laundering, securities fraud, among other offenses. With a $100,000 bounty on his head, Mogilevich is also suspected of involvement in murder-for-hire, arms dealing and drug trafficking. The FBI not-

ed that he holds a degree in economics (quite unlike most mobsters) and smokes heavily (quite common for Russians and Ukrainians). He was arrested in Moscow in 2008 for tax evasion, but released the following year. Russia subsequently rejected a request by U.S. authorities to extradite Mogilevich to answer charges related to the aforementioned massive stock swindle. A website called Gangstersinc. reported that Semion Mogilevich’s criminal career began slowly and with little initial success. As a young man in the early 1970s, he belonged to the Lyubertskaya group, a band of small-time crooks in Moscow. He apparently served two separate jail terms during this period for a plethora of petty crimes. His fortunes improved dramatically during the 1980s when the Russian government allowed thousands of Jews to depart for Israel, Europe and the U.S. Seeing a grand business opportunity, Mogilevich defrauded his fellow Jews by buying their possessions at discount prices (exploiting their eagerness to leave) and promising to sell them on the market and send the profits fron such nonexistent sales overseas at a later date. Mogilevich scored millions of dollars on this scheme and used these funds to invest in the highly lucrative areas of weapons and drugs smuggling, prostitution and gambling. In the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union empire in the early 1990s, scores of organized crime gangs took advantage of the chaos, but Mogilevich fled to Israel. However, he did not relinquish his criminal activities. Indeed, Mogilevich made contacts with other mobsters while still running various illegal enterprises and investing his ill-gotten cash in myriad businesses. After marrying his Hungarian girlfriend Katalin Papp, Mogilevich relocated to Budapest, where he formed a criminal empire based on the structural model of the Sicilian Mafia.

My favorite food event, San Diego Restaurant Week, returns September 15 to 20. Over 190 restaurants around the county will be offering three-course dinners for $20, $30 and $40 per person. Additionally, twocourse lunch menus priced at $10, $15 and $20 will be offered by over 80 restaurants. During last January’s event, I visited a couple of Cohn Restaurant Group (www.cohnrestaurants. com) participants. Escondido’s newest hot spot, Vintana, was my choice for lunch ($20). Located in the penthouse floor of a Lexus dealership, it has a sophisticated feel and features perfectly prepared and presented modern California cuisine. Its first rate service adds up to another winner for Chef Deborah Scott. Dinner at 100 Wines ($30), featuring “bistro comfort” Mediterranean fusion food, was a treat. Located in Hillcrest, there’s an uptown vibe and busy happy hour. As the name indicates, there is an extensive wine list. If you can, sit in the outdoor patio and don’t miss the cinnamon roll baked to order. Go to www.sandiegorestaurantweek.com for the list of participants, prices and sample menus.

Q: What’s the difference between snow men and snow women?
A: Snowballs! This isn’t an office. It’s Hell with fluorescent lighting.

Just for Laughs “What, this old thing...”

A young girl gets married and a few days later her mother goes to visit. When she knocks on the door, she is shocked to see her daughter open it naked. “What are you doing?” she asks. “Mom, it’s my LOVE dress!! Don’t you like it?” “I’ll come back in a few weeks when the honeymoon is over,” replies the mom.

When she goes back, she is shocked when once again her daughter is naked. “Now what are you doing?” “Mom, it’s my LOVE dress. It keeps the marriage spicy!”

Later that night the mom decides to try it for herself. When her husband comes home, he gives the same reaction: “Honey, what are you doing?” She gave him the same answer her daughter gave her, “It’s my LOVE dress! What do you think of it?” Her husband thinks long and hard and says, “I think you should have ironed it!”

Everyone thinks I’m psychotic, except for the friends in my head. On the other hand, you have different fingers. Nobody’s a virgin...life screws us all.

First guy (proudly): “My wife’s an angel!”
Second guy: “You’re lucky, mine’s still alive.” My wife says I never listen... or something like that... Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot. Lottery: A tax on people who are bad at math. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense. You know you’re ghetto when you carry food stamps in a money clip! Q: What’s the difference between a girlfriend and a wife?
A: 45 lbs. According to a recent survey, men say the first thing they notice about a woman is their eyes, and women say the first thing they notice about men s they’re a bunch of liars. A man had his VISA stolen but he decided not to report it as the thief was spending less than his wife did! Waiter: “Tea or coffee, gentlemen?” 1st customer: “I’ll have tea.” 2nd customer: “Me, too. And be sure the glass is clean!” (Waiter exits, returns) Waiter: “Two teas. Which one had the clean glass?” This could be considered THE ideal world for many men: His son on the cover of a box of Wheaties. His mistress in the centerfold of Playboy. A doctor was having an affair with his nurse. Shortly afterward, she told him she was pregnant. Not wanting his wife to know, he gave the nurse a sum of money and asked her to go to Italy

and have the baby there. “But how will I let you know the baby is born?” she asked. He replied, “Just send me a postcard and write ‘spaghetti’ on the back. I’ll take care of expenses.” Not knowing what else to do, the nurse took the money and flew to Italy. Six months went by and then one day the doctor’s wife called him at the office and explained, “Dear, you received a very strange postcard in the mail today from Europe, and I don’t understand what it means.” The doctor said, “Just wait until I get home and I will explain it to you.” Later that evening, the doctor came home, read the postcard, fell to the floor with a heart attack. Paramedics rushed him to the ER. The lead medic stayed back to comfort the wife. He asked what trauma had precipitated the cardiac arrest. So the wife picked up the card and read, “’Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti - Two with sausage and meatballs, two without.’”

A farmer goes in half with a friend to buy a bull so he can increase his stock. A couple of weeks later the friend comes by to see how his investment is doing. The farmer complains that the bull just eats grass and won’t look at the cows. His friend suggests that a veterinarian have a look at the bull. The following week his friend returns to see if the vet helped. The farmer looks delighted: “The bull has taken care of all my cows, broke through the fence, and has even

A farmer was driving along the road with a load of fertilizer. A little boy, playing in front of his house, saw him and called, “What’ve you got in your truck?” “Fertilizer,” the farmer replied. “What are you going to do with it?” asked the little boy. “Put it on strawberries,” answered the farmer. “You ought to live here,” the little boy advised him. “We put sugar and cream on ours.”

Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company’s Christmas Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn’t taste like alcohol at all. He didn’t even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong. Jack had to force himself to open his eyes and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose! Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on

What happened last night?” “Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door. Confused, he asked his son, “So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is

CHARGERS REPORT By Art Garcia Jr. When the 2013 NFL Draft finally came to a close this past April, Kwame Geathers was ‘very’ disappointed and probably, I’m guessing, a little embarrassed that his phone never rang. Entering the draft following his junior year at the University of Georgia, Geathers was projected to be a third or fourth round selection. And with a family pedigree of Geathers in the NFL (father, uncle and two brothers), going undrafted probably never entered his mind. However, rather than feeling sorry for himself, Kwame decided to sign a contract with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent. MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Geathers and talked about his draft experience and his thoughts on making the 53-man roster. AG: How does it feel to make the team as an undrafted rookie free agent? KG: It’s exciting, very exciting. I feel

blessed for this opportunity to be able to come down here and play football and I’m looking forward to doing that. Everything seems to be going pretty good so far, I just got to keep up the good work and keep striving for it and hopefully have a real good season. AG: With a family pedigree of playing in the NFL, how hard was it on you when you went undrafted? KG: I was very disappointed but that’s life and that’s how it goes. But I was blessed to come down here and play for the Chargers and that was the main thing – just to get another opportunity to play football again somewhere and this was the place to come and I’m happy I did. AG: Being an undrafted free agent you could have tried out for any of the 32 teams in the NFL did you do some research on the Chargers knowing they needed help on the defensive line? KG: No, not really research I just looked around at whoever called me

after the draft and looked at the teams, the area and how the rosters looked and I decided to come here to the Chargers. AG: What were you doing on the day of the NFL draft? KG: I was back at home, me and my brothers just hanging out watching the draft and then went skeet shooting afterwards and that’s about it. AG: Take me back to the day of the draft. Did anyone tell you where you were projected to be picked or did any team call you and say ‘get ready because if you’re there when our next pick comes up we’re taking you,’ and they picked someone else instead? KG: Yeah I got a couple of calls from teams saying they were interested in me and they were going to draft me but it didn’t work out that way. AG: Are any of those teams on the schedule this year because I assume it would give you extra incentive to go out there and show them what they passed up? KG: I believe there are a couple of teams but I don’t really look at it ENTERTAINMENT

like that – but it will be good to play extra hard (against those teams) and give me more motivation. AG: Did you set any goals for your rookie season? KG: I had a few goals but the main goal was to come out here and compete and to give it my all everyday out on the field and give it great effort and attitude. AG: You have and had a few family members who played in the NFL, what is the best advice they gave you? KG: The best advice they gave me after the draft was that it’s over with, keep your head up and now it’s time to go to work and compete for a job.

The Endzone

Geathers has two brothers – Robert Jr. (DE/Bengals) and Clifton (DE/ Eagles) – who currently play in the NFL. Robert Jr. was a fourth-round pick of the Bengals in 2004 and Clifton was a sixth-round pick by the Browns in 2010. His father, Robert Sr. was a third-round pick of the Bills in the 1981 draft and his uncle, ‘Jumpy’ Geathers, was a second-round pick of the Saints in 1984. Advantage Chargers? With all the concern over the depth along the defensive line, defensive ends Corey Liuget and Kendall Reyes feel their ability to move inside and rotate at defensive tackle can give the defense an edge over opposing offensive lines throughout the game. “We feel real good, Kendall and I both work hard and are versatile in our defense as far as manning the end position in the 3-4 defense as well as going in to nose tackle in the three-technique or whatever it is the coaches need us to do,” Liuget said. Geathers joins the likes of Antonio Gates, Kris Dielman, Stephen Cooper, Kassim Osgood, Malcom Floyd, Jacques Cesaire and Seyi Ajirotutu as a talented list of undrafted rookie free agents who have made the Chargers squad over the past decade.

More significant was the investigation surrounding Manziel potentially being paid for signing autographs. It didn’t cost Texas A&M, as the game was well in hand, but head coach Kevin Sumlin certainly won’t accept that type of behavior moving forward. It’s difficult to argue with Urlacher’s assessment of Manziel. There is no question that he is an incredible talent, but he may have to turn down his bravado a bit if Texas A&M is going to reach its full potential this season.

Will Floyd Mayweather’s wretched excess get the best of him? Commentary by Paul Magno Sports.Yahoo.com Hardcore boxing fans and followers of Floyd Mayweather are all too familiar with this: Showtime’s All Access (or 24/7 back when Mayweather was with HBO) begins. The sun rises over the Mayweather Boxing Gym in Las Vegas. The narrator’s voice comes up,saying something along the lines of “The work begins early at the Mayweather Boxing Gym in the champion’s adopted home town of Las Vegas.” Cut to an approaching Escalade (or some other ridiculously expensive car). Cue the hip-hop music. And then out comes Mayweather with his crew of bodyguards and dedicated yes men. Inside the gym, it’s always the same. Mayweather getting his hands wrapped by the aged and ever-loyal Rafael Garcia, Mayweather at the heavy bag, at the speed bag, and doing his trademark slap, block, and duck routine with the mitts. “Hard Work, Dedication.” Then, of course, is the obligatory

look at Mayweather’s conspicuous consumption and spoils of war (Yeah, Mayweather is rich!). For those unaware, Mayweather works hard, but also plays hard. The opponent doesn’t even matter. Whether it’s Hatton showing his pale buttocks, Cotto swimming with his pals, or Canelo being generally stoic and wholesome, The Mayweather Show hasn’t changed much since the first pre-PPV publicity documentaries were made prior to the MayweatherOscar De la Hoya bout in 2007. In the most recent All Access program on Showtime, boxing fans were treated to a look at Mayweather’s dazzling Las Vegas car collection and his equally dazzling collection of lady “assistants.” “We like the women stacked around here,” Mayweather interjected while one of his lady helpers was being interviewed for the cameras. “Stacked like a bank roll.” It’s the kind of “impromptu” moment one can expect from these shows--S:7”

Mayweather being Mayweather with dozens of bankrolled friends and associates letting him play emperor. But the question when it comes to rich, famous prizefighters isn’t if they will one day lose their fortunes, but, rather, how long before it actually happens. From reading Tim Keown’s recent article on Mayweather for ESPN.com, it’s hard to imagine the five-division world champ holding on to his empire of excess for too many years after his fighting days are over. In his article, Keown chronicles a twenty minute shopping spree of nearly a quarter of a million dollars at a New York City jewelry store and a trip to a Grand Rapids Footlocker where Mayweather purchased his entourage and assorted friends and family complete basketball gear (shoes, socks, shorts, and shirts) for a pick-up basketball game he felt like having later that day. In another instance, Keown writes of Mayweather taking two separate private jets on a trip--- one for him and his personal staff and one for his massive bodyguards, who Mayweather fears flying with because of their com-

The sun rises over a Vegas souvenir shop that once used to be the Mayweather Boxing Gym. The narrator’s voice comes up: “The work begins early at the former home of the Mayweather Boxing Gym. “ Cut to an approaching 2010 Ford Escort. Cue some ridiculously outdated hip-hop music. And then out comes a terribly-aged Mayweather with a couple of chubby friends in faded The Money Team t-shirts and one female hanger-on, who is stacked less like a bank roll and more like a bundle of old newspapers. bined weight. Sure, at the top of his game and earning his place atop Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes, he can afford this lifestyle. And he’ll be able to afford it for at least five more fights as he works through a mega-bucks six-fight deal with Showtime. Mayweather, who showed his bank statement to Keown, has over $123 million in his personal bank account. Add another $41.5 million, guaranteed, for the Canelo bout this September 14, and it seems ridiculous that anyone would be talking about an in-the-red Mayweather. But the tales of once-rich prizefighters are as old as the sport, itself. Mayweather makes a lot, but he spends at an even greater pace. By media accounts, he also gambles frequently. This is all fine and easily manageable--until Mayweather stops fighting. Then what? At the end of the day, this is Mayweather’s hard-earned money and he can do with it as he wishes. But when the time comes and a 52-year-old Mayweather is languishing in the remnants of a once-glowing empire, it would be nice for the Showtime cameras to return for one final All Access:

“Mayweather is here for a contracted autograph signing,” says the deepvoiced narrator. “20 bucks for an autograph, 40 for a signature with a photo.” “Hard work, Dedication,” Mayweather mugs to the cameras as his famously brittle hands grasp a black sharpie and he begins to sign his name for the twelve middle-aged tourists in line…

THE SMOOTHNESS TO BLEND IN. THE BACKBONE TO STAND OUT. Sailor Jerry’s blend of Caribbean rums lays down a

smooth-as-hell base for any drink. Meanwhile, its bold spiced character stands out, so even fancyass cocktails taste better.
