Even though the charismatic leader of Al Qaeda is dead, the threat from Muslim terrorists is alive and well
CAIRO — Al Qaeda has vowed to keep fighting the United States and avenge the death of Osama bin Laden, which it acknowledged for the first time in an Internet statement apparently designed to convince followers that it will remain vigorous and intact even after its founder’s demise. Al Qaeda’s plots are usually large-scale and involve planning over months or even years. But Western intelligence officials say they are seeing increased chatter about cheap, small-scale attacks — perhaps by individuals or small extremist groups inspired to take revenge for the killing

America’s Toughest Sheriff For those not familiar with Joe Arpaio, he is the Maricope Arizona County Sheriff. He has some unusual methods that seem to work very efficiently. It is safe to say that Liberals hate him with a passion. He is everything they hate and yet he keeps getting elected over and over again. And you are about to see why. Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the “Tent City Jail” by purchasing military surplus tents. These are the same tents that our military troops are using in Iraq. His reasoning was that if it was good enough for American soldiers, it was plenty good for prisoners that cannot seem to abide with the laws of this country.

commentary
I’m running for president . . . and I don’t run for second place “As president, my job would be to change Washington, not learn Washington.” That was my announcement on Saturday, May 21, 2011 in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park. It was a high noon event with over 15,000 of my closest friends in attendance! I wanted to be very clear of my intentions because of the usual three reservations expressed by skeptics about a “dark horse” candidate winning the Republican nomination for the presidency. Name recognition, money and not being a previous office holder are the usual negatives pointed out by political pundits. My name may not be a household name, but it is a grassroots-recognized name. Just consider the number of straw polls in which I have placed first in the last few months. The Tea Party Patriots Summit in Phoenix, the Conservatives Values Conference hosted by Congressman Steve King in Des Moines, Iowa, multiple state Republican Party conventions, and most recently an online Fox News survey following my official announcement of candidacy last Saturday. Now, my performance in the recent South Carolina presidential debate was not a straw poll, but by most accounts I was viewed most favorably by a majority of those who saw that exchange among potential candidates, as well as the immediate reaction of

a Frank Luntz on-air focus group. Even a recent Zogby poll shows me in first place of the declared or soon-to-be declared candidates for the Republican nomination for president. And ever since the Gallup Organization started including me in its “positive intensity” poll, I have placed in the top three and most recently tied for first among all of the potential candidates. Most importantly, people who know me and my professional history know that running for second place is not my style. There’s no such thing as second place when you are trying to save a company like Godfather’s Pizza from bankruptcy, and we did! When I was assigned the responsibility for the most troubled region in the Burger King Corporation back in 1982, we did not strive to become the second most successful region in the company. Our goal was to become the most successful region in the company, and we did. When the Board of Directors of the National Restaurant Association asked me to become their president and CEO in 1996, my mission was not defined as becoming a second class association in Washington, D.C. Our task under my leadership was to become a first class professional association of influence, which today represents over 13 million workers. Just as money cannot buy happiness, money alone cannot buy the Republican nomination or even a second term, as President Obama hopes to do by raising $1 billion in campaign cash. Although we need enough money to be competitive, money alone will not supersede the voices of an energized
and informed electorate. That’s what is propelling my campaign into the limelight. No, I have never held public office before, and I may not know how Washington works as some have pointed out. But I do not want to learn how to create a $14 trillion national debt, or waste $1 trillion to create a stalled economy and a 9 percent unemployment rate, or continue to push problems off on future generations. Our collective vision for America is to change those results for the better with a direct boost to the economy using bold tax reductions, responsible regulatory reductions, a restructuring of social programs and common sense solutions to our national problems. As president, my job would be to change Washington, not learn Washington. For mre information, visit hermancain.com
“USA, you will pay!” chanted more than 100 participants in a pro-bin Laden protest outside the U.S. Embassy in London A Western intelligence official said no concrete threat has emerged so far that authorities considered credible. “There have been mentions of shootings, bombings and random violence, though it is not surprising, given bin Laden’s death,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Despite the Internet chatter, reaction in the Islamic world to bin Laden’s death has been relatively muted compared with the rage that he long inspired, raising questions about his relevance in the Middle East — a region that has been changed by a wave of pro-democracy uprisings. “Sheik Usama didn’t build an organization to die when he dies,” the statement read. “The university of faith, Quran and jihad from which bin Laden graduated will not close its doors,” it added. There had been hope that bin Laden’s death would cause the Afghan Taliban to rethink its ties with Al Qaeda — a union the U.S. insists must end if the insurgents want to talk peace. The foundation of their relationship was believed to be rooted in bin Laden’s long friendship with the Taliban’s reclusive leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar Al-Zawahri, an Egyptian who is the most likely successor to bin Laden, is a less charismatic, unifying figure. He is believed to lack bin Laden’s ability to bring together the many nationalities and ethnic groups that make up Al Qaeda. His appointment could further fracture an organization that is thought to be increasingly decentralized. Al-Zawahri has long been considered the operational head of Al Qaeda while bin Laden was assumed to be an inspirational figure who was uninvolved in operations. But documents Navy SEALs seized in the raid on the hideout in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad suggest that bin Laden may have been more involved in operations than had been thought. The documents reveal plans for derailing an American train on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2011 attacks. Counterterrorism officials said they believe the plot was in the initial planning stages at the time.

UNTIL THEY ARE HOME WWII film worthy of Oscar
with Eddie has not only changed my life dramatically, but the lives of millions of American families. 78,000 men are missing from WWII, and their loved ones and families are still waiting for them to be repatriated. From that serendipitous meeting, and years of hard work, I was able to direct and co-produce the award winning documentary called “Return to Tarawa: The Leon Cooper Story.” This film has been shown all over the world and been featured on the Discovery Network here in the U.S, the History Channel in Australia, and throughout Moscow.
This cause is why we enjoy the freedom here to pursue our passions in the country In 1997, I rode my mountain bike by Tom Hanks. I stopped and asked him if he would help me get my script to the “right” people in Hollywood. He was less than cordial, and basically told me he had no interest in my project or me. I thanked him for his time and a half mile later, I rode
by the legendary actor Eddie Albert. He was 93 years old and as sweet and as kind as a human could be. He invited me into his home for coffee, and I would spend the next month interviewing him and getting to know him. That friendship and time spent

General James Amos with Steven C. Barber. “Return to Tarawa” has been featured on Larry King Live on CNN, FOX News Channel, CBS with Katie Couric and other major news entities worldwide. The film is critically acclaimed, receiving honors at the Staten Island Film Festival and a Remy for Best Documentary in 2008. The film has catapulted the mission to repatriate MIAs by triggering Congressional legislation in 2009. A sequel has been filmed and is currently in post production, but not for long. I have just returned from spending three days inside the Washington beltway nearly 14 years after that meeting Mr. Albert. The number of years that have past are a true testament to the longevity and eternal urgency and power of this film, its cause and the message of war which this story seeks closure for. “ReturnToTarawa” was responsible for spurring the Congressional Legislation that ensued JPAC (Joint POW MIA Command) to load a C-17 with 17 U.S. Marines and soldiers to go look for their fallen comrades from the 1943 The Battle of Tarawa. Being embedded with them for 34 days last summer, we documented JPAC locating, repatriating and attempting to identify two US Marines from the battle in a sexy CSI style recovery mission under the hot equitorial sun. It was an amazing time to be sure, and we have shot the sequel called, Until They Are Home. I was invited to the Pentagon where I was able to spend an hour with the Marine Commandant General James F. Amos. I had just met the General last month at the the Medal of Honor event held at the Reagan Library. I gave him some sand from the island of Tarawa in a clear bag with four old bullets in a clip from the battle I had found while filming the multiple dig. Giving the Marine Commandant sand and ammunition from what is considered “holy and hallowed ground” from the battle site of Tarawa is like giving the Pope part of the Shroud of Turin. The Pentagon is the biggest building in the world, housing some 25,000 employees every day. The Pentagon did not disappoint. I was given a two-hour tour of the concentric circles from east to west and the amount of history and concrete I was privy to were unparalleled. To say the Pentagon is ‘impressive’ is an understatement and I am not sure there is an adequate word in any language to accurately describe this great American monolith. The Commandant gave me his Challenger Commanders Coin, we shook hands and I was whisked out of the building to a waiting jet black SUV to then go meet former Secretary
of Defense Donald Henry Rumsfeld in the heart of the District of Columbia. I was fortunate to meet the former Secretary two weeks ago at the Academy of Country Music Awards in the VIP lounge at the MGM. When I introduced myself to Mr. Rumsfeld and told him about Tarawa and the magical journey I have been on, he was kind enough to agree to meet me after my interview with General Amos. When I arrived at Rumsfeld’s private office, he was finishing up a tour with 10 West Point Cadets and could not have been more inviting and kind. He asked my co-producer Matthew Hausle and Mathew Haussle, Donald Rumsfeld and Steven C. me to take a seat in his conference room and we Barber waited for him to finish up with the cadets. Ten minutes later he arrived in the conference room. Pleasantries were exchanged and then he asked me what he could do for me. I explained to him the powerful nature of my film and how many millions of Americans the film had profoundly affected, and how I am seeking finishing funds for this film and would like him to consider donating and possibly getting my information to others that would be interested in Until They Are Home. We then spoke briefly about a project that he and my production company Vanilla Fire Productions could do together and he took my package and told me that he would be happy to review and get back to me. Mr. Rumsfeld would then sign two newly published books of his memoir for me and a colleague and we took pictures, shook hands and both agreed to reach out to each other in the very near future. Before we left, he offered a quick tour of his office which had mementos from his historic two terms as Secretary of Defense and other government positions. My favorite item he has was a stand up desk that he said he spent $1200 dollars on and had been using for years! Being here made me feel great and then it happed - the Trifecta. We were invited to tour the amazing Marine Museum in Quantico and were greeted by its curator for a 20 minute tour and interview. This is one of the most spectacular museums I have ever seen costing over $100,000,000 and showcasing the 235 years of history of the United States Marine Corp. The sacrifice that the Marines have made along with all branches of the armed services can not be measured... but are felt and seen and used by all of us when we exercise our daily freedoms. My co-producer and I headed to the airport late in the afternoon bound on a United flight back to Los Angeles. The five hour flight was a time to reflect on what a great and proud country America is. I hear a lot of negative talk about America and how she is sinking into the abyss and there is no way out. I can unequivocally announce, although some huge challenges await Americans on a daily basis, the Untied States is strong, hopeful, and will prevail in greatness, as she always has! The State of the Union is Brigadiet Larry Nicholson in Marine Dress Blues. STRONG!! For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

EXILE THE PENAL COLONY A penal colony is a settlement used to exile prisoners and separate them from the general populace by placing them in a remote location, often an island or distant colonial territory. Although the term can be used to refer to a correctional facility located in a remote location it is more commonly used to refer to communities of prisoners overseen by wardens or governors having absolute authority. Historically penal colonies have often been used for penal labor in an economically underdeveloped part of a state’s (usually colonial) territories, and on a far larger scale than a prison farm. In practice such penal colonies may be little more than slave communities. The British, French, and other colonial em-
pires heavily used North America and other parts of the world as penal colonies to varying degrees, sometimes under the guise of indentured servitude or similar arrangements. The prison regime was often harsh, sometimes including severe physical punishment, so even if prisoners were not sentenced for the rest of their natural lives, many died from hunger, disease, medical neglect, excessive labour, or during an escape attempt. In the penal colony system, prisoners were sent far away to prevent

escape and to discourage returning after their sentence expired. Penal colonies were often located in inhospitable frontier lands, where their unpaid labour could benefit the colonial powers before immigration labor became available, or even after because they are much cheaper. In fact, some people (especially the poor, following a similar social logic as could see them domestically ‘employed’ in a poorhouse) were sentenced for trivial or dubious offenses to generate cheap labor.
British Empire The British used North America as a penal colony through a system of indentured servitude. Convicts would be transported by merchants and auctioned off to plantation owners upon arrival in the colonies. It is estimated that some 50,000 British convicts were sent to colonial America, representing perhaps one-quarter of all British emigrants during the 18th century. When that avenue closed in the 1780s after the American Revolution, Britain began using parts of what is now known as Australia as penal settlements. Some of these included Norfolk Island, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and New South Wales. Advocates of Irish Home Rule or of Trade Unionism (the Tolpuddle Martyrs) often received sentences of deportation to these Australian colonies. Without the allocation of the available convict labor to farmers, pastoral squatters and Government projects such as roadbuilding, colonisation of Australia would not have been possible, especially considering the considerable drain on non-convict labor caused by several goldrushes that took place in the 19th century. Bermuda, off the North American coastline, was also used during the Victorian period. Convicts housed in hulks were used to build the Royal Naval Dockyard there, and during the Second Boer War, Boer prisoners-of-war were sent to the archipelago and imprisoned on one of the smaller islands. In colonial India, the British had made various penal colonies. Two of the most infamous ones are on the Andaman islands and Hijli. In the early days of settlement, Singapore was the recipient of Indian convicts, who were tasked with clearing the jungles for settlement and early public works.
Elsewhere Joseph Stalin sent millions of Soviet (mostly Russian and Ukrainian) dissidents to Kazakhstan as punishment for disobeying the CPSU line. The scale of Russian penal settlement helped Kazakhs become an ethnic minority within their own country. This demographic trend lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union. During the Argentine rule of the Falkland Islands, Major Esteban Mestivier was commissioned by the Buenos Aires government, as the new governor of the islands, to set up a penal colony. He arrived at his destination on November 15, 1832, but his soldiers mutinied and killed him. Lt. Col. José María Pinedo quelled the rebellion and took charge as governor. Argentinas southermost city Ushuaia was founded as a penal colony. France sent criminals to tropical penal colonies including Louisiana in the early 18th century. Devil’s Island in French Guiana, 1852–1939, received forgers and other criminals. New Caledonia in Melanesia (in the South Sea) received dissidents like the Communards, Kabyles rebels as well as convicted criminals. Both Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union used Siberia as a penal colony for criminals and dissidents. Though geographically contiguous with heartland Russia, Siberia provided both remoteness and a harsh climate. In 1857, a penal

colony was established on the island of Sakhalin. The Gulag and its tsarist predecessor, the katorga system, provided slave-type penal labor to develop forestry, logging and mining industries, construction enterprises, as well as highways and railroads across Siberia. Currently in Mexico, the island of Isla María Madre (in the Marías Islands) is used as a penal colony. With a small population (less than 1200), the colony is governed by a state official who is both the governor of the islands and chief judge. The military command is independent of the government and is exercised by an officer of the Mexican Navy. The other islands are uninhabited. The Guantanamo Bay detention camp has been used by the United States as a penal colony to maintain and interrogate prisoners outside U.S. legal jurisdiction.

CHAIN GANG A chain gang is a group of prisoners chained together to perform menial or physically challenging work, such as mining or timber collecting, as a form of punishment. Such punishment might include building roads, digging ditches or chipping stone. This system existed primarily in the southern parts of the United States, and by 1955 had been phased out nationwide, with Georgia the last state to abandon the practice. Chain gangs were reintroduced by a few states during the “get tough on crime” 1990s, with Alabama being the first state to revive them in 1995. The experiment ended after about one year in all states except Arizona, where in Maricopa County inmates can still volunteer for a chain gang to earn credit toward a high school diploma or avoid disciplinary lockdowns for rule infractions.
History Various claims as to the purpose of chain gangs have been offered. These include: • Punishment. Societal restitution for the cost of housing, feeding, and guarding the inmates. The money earned by work performed goes to offset prison expenses by providing a large workforce at no cost for government projects, and at minimal convict leasing cost for private businesses. • A way of perpetuating African-American servitude after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution ended slavery. • Reducing inmates’ idleness. • To serve as a deterrent to crime. • To satisfy the needs of politicians to appear “tough on crime.” The use of chain gangs in the United States generally endChain Gang street sweepers. From a real photo postcard postmarked from Washington, ed in 1955. Chain gangs experienced a resurgence when AlaDC in 1909.
bama began to use them again in 1995. Many jurisdictions in the United States have re-introduced prison labor. In recent years, Maricopa County, Arizona, which encompasses Phoenix, and its Sheriff Joe Arpaio have drawn attention from human rights groups for the use of chain gangs for both men and women. Arizona’s modern chain gangs, rather than chipping rocks or other non-productive tasks, often do work of economic benefit to a correctional department. Opponents note that the gangs often work outside in oppressive desert heat. A year after reintroducing the chain gang in 1995, Alabama was forced to again abandon the practice pending a lawsuit from, among other organizations, the Southern Poverty Law Center. “They realized that chaining them together was inefficient; that it was unsafe,” said attorney Richard Cohen of the organization. However, as late as 2000, Alabama Prison Commissioner Ron Jones has again proposed reintroducing the chain gang. The 1995 reintroduction has been called “commercial slavery” by some in academic circles.
Escaped, but not forgotten
Officer James Yarbrough: “It’s obvious that we gotta do something to keep these inmates from comin’ back. Like I said, I don’t know if chain gangs are going to work, but at least they’re trying something. And as a taxpayer, I like the idea that they’re at least trying something. If this don’t work, you know let’s try something else. If we gotta hook to a ten ball and let them tote that around, ya know, let’s get the balls ordered. Ya’ know, whatever it takes to stop these folks from coming back to prison.”

This is exactly what a Sheriff is supposed to do. Why do we not have more like him? Go get them Joe!
He stopped smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails. He removed their weight training equipment and cut off all but “G” rated movies. He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and therefore was a waste of valuable monetary resources. When the inmates complained, he told them, “This isn’t the Ritz/Carlton... If you don’t like it, don’t come back.” He bought Newt Gingrich’s lec-
ture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails so he hooked up the cable TV as required by law. Prisoners now have access only to The Disney Channel and The Weather Channel. When asked
why he allowed The Weather Channel, he replied, “So they will know how hot it’s gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.” He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects, thereby lowering the taxes and helping raise the standard of living on the local population. But there was a problem. Because of the litigious society that we live in and with groups like the ACLU, he was afraid that he might get sued for discrimination so he started chain gangs for women. Women have another reason to thank the good ladies of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the ACLU for forgetting that women are women and insisting on equality everywhere. In Joe Arpaio’s jail, they have it. With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix, sometimes reaching well over 110 degrees, the 2,000 inmates living in the tent prison had been given permission to strip down to their government issued pink boxer shorts. Hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which has reached as high as 138 degrees inside the tents. Many were also wrapped in wet, pink towels as sweat dripped down to their pink
socks. “It feels like we are in a furnace,” said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tent jail for one year. “It’s inhumane.” Here is a thought... Maybe you should not have committed the crimes that put you in the position you are in now. It seems that you now have a certain motivation not to break the law again. Is that not what rehabilitation is all about? Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city jail and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He told all of the inmates: “It’s 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they did not commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!” We certainly applaud Sheriff Joe Arpaio! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. If not, it is certainly a much cheaper way to house these criminals that do nothing positive for society. These are people who cannot live within the confines of the law and now they have a place that does not cost the taxpayers as

Honoring our flag This is a story about a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was a pilot who went in to the Navy as a enlisted man, worked his way up through the ranks. He was shot down over Vietnam and became a prisoner of war. While held, he found some red, white and blue rags and made a darning needle out of bamboo. He sewed a flag inside his prison shirt, and each night the prisoners placed the shirt with the flag on the wall, and recited the pledge of
allegiance. One day his captors found the flag sewn inside his prison shirt. For this he was severely punished in front of the other prisoners, suffered punctured ear drums, broken ribs, and thrown back into the cell. The other prisoners placed him on his sleeping platform, and cleaned him up the best they could. Let us never forget the Mike Christians who served this country.
Mike Christian and the American Flag By Hal Holland, San Diego Resident Inside a prison uniform he had sewn a flag, With a needle made of bamboo, and colored rags. Each night all the prisoners would hang up the shirt, And pledge the allegiance, while enduring all the hurt. One day, he was caught, with the flag in his shirt, Beaten severely, thrown back in the cell with all the hurt. His fellow prisoners, cleaned him up, as best they could, Thinking of the pledge of allegiance, as each night they stood. Looking across the dim lit room, they saw Mike with an old red rag, And his bamboo needle, creating another flag So each Fourth of July as you start to celebrate, Think of these prisoners, and pride they did take. Always remember it’s the acts of honor and pride, And the grace of God, for it is in him we confide, Truly make for us, That Grand Old Flag

To the original members of the Continental Congress, red stood for hardiness and courage, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance and justice.

Secret VA benefits for seniors
This is the latest in a series of “secrets” revealed by author Victoria L. Collier, JD, in her book “47 Secret Veterans’ Benefits for Seniors, Benefits You Have Earned... but Don’t Know About”
VA compensation is tax free income Veterans are often concerned that if they apply for service connected disability compensation, they will be taxed on the income and thus have to pay more income tax. This is not correct. Both VA compensation and VA pension are tax free income. Elements of Proof for Service Connected Disability In order to receive service connected disability compensation, the veteran must prove three essential elements. 1. There must be a medical diagnosis

of current disability; 2. There must be medical or lay evidence of an in-service occurrence or the aggravation of a disease or injury; and 3. There must be a nexus between the current disability and that inservice occurrence. So let me give you a personal example. When I was in the military, I was a carpenter. I sustained an injury. Here is how it happened: I weighed 97 pounds when I enlisted. The guys I worked with were much larger than me. Because I worked in a traditional man’s job, I was trying to prove myself as someone who they would want to work with, and would want to be on the team. We had a masonry job to complete. Masonry involves handling a lot of concrete and bags of plaster. Our job site was on the interior of a building, up some 34 stair steps. I was getting my plaster, which weighed 60 pounds, from the truck to take upstairs to do my job. My coworker, superior in rank, was on the back of the truck handing me a bag of plaster. I threw it on my shoulder and turned around to walk about 40 yards, and then up 34 stairs. My co-worker put his hand on my head to stop me from leaving. He threw another bag on my shoulder. That meant I was carrying 120 pounds and walking with both bags on my shoulders. I made it to the end of the long hallway. I climbed the stairs and made it almost all the way to the top I was about four steps away from the top when my legs began to give way. Fortunately, a friend of mine, Sgt. McVey, was at the top. All I could do was look at him and give him an expression like, “You’d better take these bags because I’m going down.” He saved the bags and he saved me. But in the process I developed a

hemorrhoid. Carrying more than you are supposed to carry apparently puts strain on your innards. I sought treatment at the military medical facility on base. The treatment consisted of basically eating soft foods and using Preparation H. This event is documented in my medical records. I can show a specific incident Fast forward to years later. My enlistment ended and I left military service. I don’t know if you have experienced hemorrhoids or not, but I will just share with you that they come and go. They are always there but the discomfort comes and goes. Sometimes it feels like shards of glass are passing through. So the last thing you want is a doctor poking around all the time in your private areas. So I just kind of grinned and bore it when I had to and otherwise, I was comfortable. Like many people, I wanted to avoid going to the doctor. Seven years after leaving the military I founded my law firm. I knew that my emphasis was going to be on helping elderly veterans obtain the benefits they had earned. So, I thought, “What better education than going through the application process myself. I can do my own application. I can fill it out and see first-hand what my clients will be going through when they file a claim. At this time, my hemorrhoid was acting up. I still didn’t want to go to the doctor. Nevertheless, I went to the VA regional office to file my application for a service connected disability. The VA representative asked if I had been to the doctor lately. I had not. He said, “Well, you are going to have to go because we need medical evidence of a current disability.” I chose not to go. Thus, I was denied benefits. The VA acknowledged, in writing, that
I incurred the injury while in the military. They acknowledged that it was in my medical records, but they denied me because I couldn’t show that my injury was currently disturbing me. All of the three essential elements must be proven to the VA to receive benefits. Four Step Adjudication Process Once the VA receives a claim for service connected disability benefits, it processes the claim by following a four step adjudication process. 1. Upon receipt of the application at the VA regional office in the state where you live, the VA will determine if the veteran meets the service discharge requirements. 2. The VA will determine if the three essential elements have been met. 3. If so, the VA will then determine the severity of the disability and adjudicate a disability rating of 0% to 100%. 4. Then, the VA will establish the effective date for the disability, the onset date. Typically, you will get paid from the month after you filed the application. So even if you were disabled in 1980, if you don’t file an application until 2007, the onset date will likely be fro 2007 and forward. PAUL NEWMAN Birth Name: Paul Leonard Newman Nickname: King Cool Screen legend, superstar, and the man with the most famous blue eyes in movie history, Paul Newman was born in 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of a successful sporting goods store owner. He acted in grade school and high school plays and after being discharged from the Navy in 1946 enrolled at Kenyon College. After graduation he spent a year at the Yale Drama School and then headed to New York, where he attended the famed New York Actors Studio. Classically handsome and with a super abundance of sex appeal, television parts came easily and, after his first Broadway appearance in “Picnic” (1953), he was offered a movie contract by Warner Brothers. His first film, The Silver Chalice (1954) was nearly his last. He considered his performance in this costume epic to be so bad that he took out a full-page ad in a trade paper apologizing for it to anyone who might have seen it. He fared much better in his next effort, Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), in which he portrayed boxer Rocky Graziano and drew raves from the critics for his brilliant performance. He went on to become one of the top box office draws of the 1960s, starring in such superior films as The Hustler (1961), The Prize (1963), Hud (1963), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). He also produced and directed many quality films, including Rachel, Rachel (1968) in which he directed wife Joanne Woodward and which received an Oscar nomination for best picture. Nominated nine times for a best actor Oscar, he finally took one home for his performance as an aging pool shark in The Color of Money (1986), a sequel to his classic, The Hustler (1961). Though well into his 70s as the century drew to a close, Newman still commanded lead roles in films such as Message in a Bottle (1999). He lives with his wife in Westport, Connecticut. A caring and supremely generous man, he is the founder of “Newman’s Own” a successful line of food products that has earned in excess of $100 million, every penny of which the philanthropic movie icon has donated to charity. Renowned for his sense of humor, in 1998 he quipped that he was a little embarrassed to see his salad dressing grossing more than his movies.

commentary
Reaction to politician’s ‘greedy seniors’ Alan Simpson, Senator from Wyoming, co-chair of Obama’s deficit commission, calls senior citizens the greediest generation as he compared “Social Security” to a milk cow with 310 million teats. — August 2010. Here’s a response in a letter from a unknown fellow in Montana… I think he is a little ticked off! He also tells it like it is! “Hey Alan, let’s get a few things
straight. 1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole for fifty years. 2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 years (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63). 3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give our money to a bunch of zero ambition losers in
return for votes, thus bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme that would have made Bernie Madoff proud. 4. Recently, just like Lucy and Charlie Brown, you and your ilk pulled the proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to age 67. Now, you and your shill commission are proposing to move the goalposts yet again.
5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare from day one, and now you morons propose to change the rules of the game. Why? Because you idiots mismanaged other parts of the economy to such an extent that you need to steal money from Medicare to pay the bills. 6. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying income taxes our entire lives, and now you propose to increase our taxes yet again. Why? Because you incompetent politicians spent our money so profligately that you just kept on spending even after you ran out of money. Now, you come to the American taxpayers and say you need more to pay off your debt. To add insult to injury, you label us “greedy” for calling foul on your incompetence. Well, I have a few questions for you. 1. How much money have you earned from the American taxpayers during your pathetic 50-year political career? 2. At what age did you retire from your pathetic political career, and how much are you receiving in annual retirement benefits from the American taxpayers? 3. How much do you pay for your government provided health insurance? 4. What cuts in your retirement and healthcare benefits are you proposing in your disgusting deficit reduction proposal, or, as usual, have you exempted yourself and your political cronies? It is you and your political coconspirators called Congress who are the “greedy” ones. It is you and your fellow nut cases who have bankrupted America and stolen the American dream from millions of loyal, patriotic taxpayers. And for what? Votes. That’s right, sir. You and yours have bankrupted America for the sole purpose of advancing your pathetic political careers. You know it, we know it, and you know that we know it. And you can take that to the bank. uring this month we take time to reflect and give Honor to those who have gone before us. We give them a special day called “Memorial Day.” Many of you have childhood memories, as I do, of going as a family to the cemetery each Memorial Day to visit the site where my great-grandparents were buried. It almost felt like Easter. We would all dress up in our nice clothes and take a picnic lunch. We kids would be told or reminded of who was buried there and how important they were to our life. Then, the parents would edge the overgrown grass around the markers and we would play up and down the hill. We came to know that these people we had never met had played a vital role in our family. For some reason however, as we became teenagers and life got busier, our family would go only every few years and then stopped going all together. Why do we allow the worldly rat race to interfere with a family tradition and what is most important? Maybe this hasn’t happened in your family yet. Great, maybe these few words will help you not allow it to. A writing I came across, reminds us that all memories may not always have been especially good ones, but become special nonetheless. Maybe you have some thoughts similar to these in this story. (With all that is going on in the economy today, some of us may relate to this story even more…) I grew up in the fifties with a practical parent — a mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a housedress, lawn mower in one hand, dishtowel in the other. It was the time for fixing things — a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, and the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, reheating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there’d always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer’s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any ‘more.’ Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to return. So...while we have it...it’s best we love it...and care for it...and fix it when it’s broken...and heal it when it’s sick. This is true...for marriage...and old cars...and children with bad report cards...and dogs with bad hips...and aging parents...and grandparents.
We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away — or — a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special...and so, we keep them close!” We can get so caught up with day-to-day life that we forget to “keep” those ties with family and old friends. Many is the mother who longs for a phone call from her son or daughter, be they 20 or 60—whose heart is lifted to the heavens when she hears them ask, “How are you doing, mom?” For those away from home and possibly somewhat estranged from loved ones, this could be a door opener to reestablishing the relationship that is obviously still somewhat on your mind. (Because you are thinking of that person now). It may be a parent, a brother, or sister; it may that friend you hung out with during school. It just might be someone you want to check on and see how they are doing; a former teacher who made a difference in your life, a coach, or the old man you talked to on the graveyard shift at one of your first jobs. All who are growing older, as we are, and may wish to know if they helped create lasting memories or made a difference in your life. I think we all would want to know if we had. If this hadn’t been part of your family tradition maybe you might want to start one of honoring those who are a part of you and contributed to who you are. We are given this day of Memorial Day to jar our memories, but it can be any and all days. Start by keeping a record, a journal, a photo album, etc… Go to the family reunions, high school reunions and for those who go to war together, unit reunions. Maybe we are the ones who start them up. We can always start from where we are and appreciate what and who is in our life today. A poem, by an unknown author, shares this message:
Memorial Day is a time to remember the joys of life. For most, it is the time spent with family and dear friends. “Good friends are like stars... You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.” May we take and make the time to create those special moments that others and we can look back on with fondness, is my prayer this week. God Bless!! As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renews a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI
“The Old Family Album”
The old family album, the pages are worn, From turning and browsing they are tattered and torn, For memories are sweet ones, we like to repeat ones, We live them again in the old family album. Now picture the family, we’re all having fun, We’re in this together—parents, daughters, and sons, For pictures are share times, those family affair times, We live them again in the old family album. The camera is snapping while the gifts we’re unwrapping, The lens is recording our group as we’re boarding, The shutter is clicking while baby is kicking, And all to record in the old family album. So stand all together, remember to smile, We’ll all be recorded in family group style, The camera is ready now everyone steady, And we’ll be a page in the old family album.

Based on the true story of Henri Charriere, also known as Papillon, which is French for ‘butterfly’ (the character even sports a large tattoo of a butterfly). A petty criminal, Papillon is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony in ‘Guiane’ (French Guiana, South America). Papillon is determined to escape but attempt after attempt meets with difficulty, resulting in eventual recapture. He continues his attempts to escape despite incarcerations in solitary confinement as punishment.
trivia Although billed as a true story, the French in French Guiana claim that much of the story of Henri Charrière (Papillon) is fabricated. Papillon was documented to have been incarcerated in Saint Laurent and may have escaped from there, but he never served any time on the Devil’s Islands (now known as Iles du Salut or Salvation Islands). The book and movie both present Devil’s Island as having rocky cliffs, when in fact, though the entire island is rocky, it gently slopes into the surrounding sea. The real-life Papillon, Henri Charrière, was 25 when he was sent to Devil’s Island. Papillon is the French word for Butterfly and is pronounced: PAP ee yonh.
KING OF COOL - STEVE MCQUEEN
Date of Death 7 November 1980, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico (heart attack following surgery) Birth Name Terence Steven McQueen Nickname – Bandito, King Of Cool Height 5’ 9½” (1.77 m)
Page 24 June 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
He was the ultra-cool male film star of the 1960s, and rose from a troubled youth spent in reform schools to being the world’s most popular actor. Over 25 years after his untimely death from mesothelioma in 1980, Steve McQueen is still considered hip and cool, and he endures as an icon of popular culture. His first lead role was in the low-budget sci-fi film The Blob (1958), quickly followed by roles in The St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959) and Never So Few (1959). The young McQueen appeared as Vin, alongside Yul Brynner, in the star-laden The Magnificent Seven (1960) and effectively hijacked the lead from the bigger star by ensuring he was nearly always doing something in every shot he and Brynner were in together, such as adjusting his hat or gun belt. He next scored with audiences with two interesting performances, first in the WW2 drama Hell Is for Heroes (1962) and then in The War Lover (1962). Riding a wave of popularity, McQueen delivered another crowd pleaser as Hilts, the Cooler King, in the knockout WW2 POW film The Great Escape (1963), featuring his famous leap over the barbed wire on a motorcycle while being pursued by Nazi troops (in fact, however, the stunt was actually performed by his good friend, stunt rider Bud Ekins). McQueen next appeared in several films of mixed quality, including Soldier in the Rain (1963); Love with the Proper Stranger (1963) and Baby the Rain Must Fall (1965). However, they failed to really grab audience attention, but his role as Eric Stoner in The Cincinnati Kid (1965), alongside screen legend Ed-
ward G. Robinson and Karl Malden, had movie fans filling theaters again to see the ice-cool McQueen they loved. He was back in another western, Nevada Smith (1966), again with Malden, and then he gave what many consider to be his finest dramatic performance as loner US Navy sailor Jake Holman in the superb The Sand Pebbles (1966). McQueen was genuine hot property and next appeared with Faye Dunaway in the provocative crime drama The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), next in what many consider his signature role, that of a maverick, taciturn detective in the mega-hit Bullitt (1968), renowned for its famous chase sequence through San Francisco between McQueen’s Ford Mustang and the killer’s black Dodge Charger. By 1979, the spreading cancer was taking its toll on his body. McQueen’s last two film performances were in the unusual western Tom Horn (1980), then
he portrayed real-life bounty hunter Ralph “Papa’ Thorson (Ralph Thorson) in The Hunter (1980). Steve McQueen passed away on November 7, 1980, only 50 years of age, and his ashes were scattered at sea. He married three times and had a lifelong love of motor racing, once remarking, “Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.”

at the last intersection.” “Oh, come on pal, there wasn’t a car within miles of me,” countered the driver. “Nevertheless sir, you are required to come to a complete stop, look both ways, and proceed with caution.” “You gotta be kidding me!” barked the offender. “It’s no joke, sir.”
Maybe It Isn’t a Baby?
“Look, I slowed down almost to a complete stop, saw no one within twenty miles, and proceeded with caution,” argued the driver. “That’s beside the point, sir. You are supposed to come to a complete stop, and you didn’t. Now if I may see your license and...” “You’ve got a lot of time on your hands, PAL!” interrupted the belligerent motorist. “What’s the
matter, all the doughnut shops closed?” “Sir, I’ll overlook that last comment. Let me see your license and registration immediately!” “I will, if you can tell me the difference between slowing down, and coming to a complete stop.” The police officer had enough, “Sir, I can do better than that.” He opened the car door, dragged the obnoxious motorist out, and proceeded to methodically beat him over the head with his nightstick. “Now sir, would you like me to slow down or come to a complete stop?”
A woman gets on a bus holding her baby. “That’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen,” says the bus driver. In a huff, the woman slams her fare into the box and takes an aisle seat near the rear of the bus. The man seated next to her senses her agitation and asks what’s wrong. “The bus driver insulted me!” she shouts. The man replies, “Well, he’s a public servant and shouldn’t say things to insult passengers!” You’re right,” says the woman. “I think I’ll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind!” “That’s a good idea,” the man replies. “Here, let me hold your monkey.”
Get Some Therapy After a few years of marriage, filled with constant arguments, a man and his wife decide that the only way to save their marriage is to try therapy. When they arrived at the therapist’s office, the therapist jumped right in. “What seems to be the problem?” Immediately, the husband looked down without anything to say and the wife started talking 90 miles an hour describing all the wrongs within her husband. After 15 minutes, the therapist went over to her, picked her up and kissed her passionately. Afterwards, the wife sat there speechless. He looked at the husband who was staring in disbelief at what just happened. The therapist said “your wife NEEDS that at least 2 times a week!” The husband scratched his head and said, “I can have her here on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Stop Sign A police officer pulled over a red Porsche after it had run a stop sign, “May I see your driver’s license and registration please?” “What’s the problem, officer?” snapped the motorist. “Your just ran the stop sign back there For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

wyneth Paltrow’s talks with Atlantic Records have reportedly collapsed. Poor Gwyneth Paltrow. The would-be country singer may have no choice but to remain a plain old movie star. After months of talks with Atlantic Records, plans for Paltrow’s debut album have reportedly collapsed. The actor claims she is still “considering” her options. At 38, Paltrow had suddenly become a surprisingly plausible music star. The former star of Emma and Shakespeare in Love portrayed a singer in the new film Country Strong, earning an Oscar nomination for best song. She also found the back-door to a youth audience, appearing on the hit TV series Glee. In two performances as the substitute teacher Holly Holliday, Paltrow has performed songs such as Prince’s Kiss and Gary Glitter’s Do You Wanna Touch Me. Plus it doesn’t hurt that she can snuggle up at night with one of the biggest pop stars in the world, her husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Then again, her familiarity with Coldplay’s revenues may be part of Paltrow’s problem: according to a report by the New York Post, she wanted a mind-boggling $1m (£621,000) to sign with Atlantic. “Atlantic bosses were very interested,” their source explained. “But then the talks halted and the deal fizzled out ... [$1m was] a ridiculous figure.” While Paltrow can sparkle on the silver screen, label honchos may have learned some lessons from the discographies (and sales figures) of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Paris Hilton. Representatives for Paltrow claim that those reported figures are “innacurate” however and stated that Atlantic “was not the only company pursuing her. She still has not decided if she wants to record an album,” they told the Post. “[It] is still something she is considering.” In the meantime, the actor is plotting a new cookbook – and rumoured to cameo on Glee’s summertime arena tour.

arciano became a top contender following his sixth-round knockout of Rex Layne at Madison Square Garden on 12 July 1951. His physical style in a very rough bout made him a popular favorite, and the crowd cheered him for twenty minutes after the match. However, Marciano’s heavyweight title aspirations were dashed when the number-one contender, Jersey Joe Walcott, won the heavyweight title from Ezzard Charles. With a Charles-Walcott rematch scheduled, Marciano was matched against former champion Joe Louis, who was making a comeback in order to pay off tax debts. Weill opposed the bout, but Goldman believed Marciano was ready to take on the aging Louis, who was a slight favorite. The fight took place on 26 October, with Louis receiving 45 percent of the purse and Marciano only 15 percent. Marciano won with an eight-round knockout, as youth, power, stamina, and hunger carried the day over experience and reach. With his victory over Louis, Marciano earned a title shot against Walcott, who at age thirty-eight was the oldest champion in boxing history to that time. In preparation for the bout, Marciano tuned up by defeating light heavyweight contender Kid Matthews on 28 July 1952 at Yankee Stadium in New York City; the fight drew a crowd of 31,188 and earned Marciano $50,000. The Marciano-Walcott championship match took place in Philadelphia on 23 September 1952, with Photo Courtesy of Michael N. Marciano’s professional record was 49-0. He was the victor in all six of his title defenses, and at the end of the twentieth century he was still the only undefeated heavyweight champion in boxing history. He left with a reputation for invincibility and for being particularly dangerous when hurt. A bruising fighter, Marciano was rated as the greatest slugger of all time with an 88 percent knockout record. A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, he was Fighter of the Year in 1952 and 1954. Marciano died when a private plane in which he was a passenger crashed near Newton, Iowa

interview
OPRAH’S FAREWELL To borrow a line from “Citizen Kane,” I knew Oprah before the beginning, and now I know her after the end. Her taping of two farewell shows on Tuesday night at Chicago’s United Center brings to a close the most phenomenal run of any talk show host in history, and rings down the curtain on the second act of a life that seems poised to have many more. What lies ahead? Her new cable network, we know. But I suspect she also has a future in high public office. Gene Siskel and I met Oprah in Baltimore, when she was in her early 20s and hosting a morning talk show. Then she moved to ABC/7 in Chicago, went up against the ruling Phil Donahue, dethroned him in three months, and went on to become a superstar with (for some) elements of earth mother and deity. Curious about some of the feelings she was having at this time, I sent Oprah some questions. These are her replies:
Q: What do you think happens after death? A: You drop your body, and your soul joins the spiritual chorus of ALL there is. Many levels in the chorus. Where you stand in the chorus line is determined by how you live now. I think that Holly Hunter’s last words in the movie “The Piano,” when she’s sinking to the depths of the ocean with the chain unraveling from the boat, will be true for all of us: “Death. What a surprise!” Q: The novel “Miss Lonelyhearts” was about the author of an advice column who began to crumble under the weight of his reader’s problems. How do you survive the depth of suffering of some of your guests? A: I used to take in and FEEL EVERYTHING. I could literally feel people’s energy. Their nervousness. Anxiety, pain. Years ago I complained to the executive producer how feeling everyone’s pain was making me sick. And she replied, “Then, you need to stop doing that.” So I did. I made a conscious effort to listen and not absorb the pain. Not take it on, but hear it, empathize and LET IT GO. Q: I believe you started out with a career and ended up with a vocation. If you agree with that at all, did the transition catch you rather by surprise? A: Very much so. Everyone would be surprised at how little I knew about ANYthing when I first came to Chicago. Every decision was made on instinct.
Q: Your Chicago shows began with the standard TV morning show studio format. Today I can’t imagine your program without a studio audience. How did the studio audience evolve, and how do you relate to it? A: I was accustomed to an audience, though tiny (24), in Baltimore. I was so thrilled to have the “AM Chicago” job, I forgot to ask my boss, Dennis Swanson, “What is the format? And do you have an audience?” After the first day with no audience we started asking the secretaries to sit in on folding chairs. Then expanded to going on State Street and begging people to come in, “get warm and watch the show.” I knew I worked better connecting to real people in front of me. It felt more like sharing the experience rather than being the experience. Q: Do you monitor your behavior because you are such an influential model for so many people? Many celebrities lead appalling lives. Not you.

A: Nope. Fame is such an interesting dynamic. It’s determined by other people’s view of you. I became famous for being myself. I’d be the same self no matter what I was doing. For many years I thought I’d be a teacher. And had visions of getting the teacher of the year award. Q: Will the Oprah Network broaden out from health and counseling sorts of programs to include news, sitcoms, movies, reality shows? A: I want to create programming 24/7 that wakes people up. And use whatever format it takes to do it. Q: On TV, I saw you weeping at Grant Park during Obama’s speech. I sensed at that moment something more than simply joy. I felt something very deep within you had been accessed. A: For sure. There’s a Negro spiritual, “Wouldn’t Take Nothin’ for My Journey Now.” I was thinking about the journey. His and mine and the collective ours; the sacrifices and prayers, marches, sit-ins and lynchings. I was thinking about my grandmother, who spent her whole life in acceptance of segregation and oppression not imagining it could be any other way. I was thinking of Martin L. King and the countless others who dared believe it could. I was thinking of the spiritual and emotional impact of his victory on the world. Q: At the movies, I think many people cry more when they see goodness than when they see sadness. Why is that? A: Because we are innately good, and the goodness we see that makes us cry is just a mirror of ourselves. Hits our goodness nerve. Q: Gene Siskel’s invariable question: What do you know for sure? A: I know for sure that the third law of motion in physics is real and is the rule of the world: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Being responsible for the energy you put out determines the energy returned. Or to quote Celie, as she finally summoned the courage to leave Mister, in “The Color Purple,” “Everything you even try to do to me, already done to you!”

The night I attended, there were 13 trucks; every thing from cupcakes to ethnic cuisine. My two favorites were Deborah Scott’s Ms. Patty Melt and Chop Sooey (think BBQ not Asian). Grab a glass of wine in the store and roam the parking lot. Hint: go early for parking or take the Trolley.

sports THE GREATEST CENTERS
Who would you pick to be the greatest center in the NBA?
Shaquille O’Neal Shaquille O’Neal has played 80 regular-season games only twice: in his first two seasons. Walt Bellamy played 80 games eight times, actually played 88 one year thanks to a strangely-timed trade. David Robinson played 80 games eight times, Gilmore 13 times, Malone 10 times, Mikan never, but only because there weren’t 80-game seasons when he played. Center is traditionally a position manned by iron men. Malone and Parish played 21 seasons each. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played forever. Wilt Chamberlain almost never sat — one year he averaged 48.5 minutes per game, because the Warriors went into overtime a few times. While durability was a strength for almost every center on this list, for O’Neal it has been his singular weakness. Well, that or free throw shooting. O’Neal was officially NBA MVP once, in the 19992000 season. He also finished second twice, third twice, and fourth twice. Despite his limited playing time, to suggest that O’Neal was only the best player in the NBA for one season seems, well, unlikely. Shaq was the dominant force on the three-peat Lakers, Finals MVP in all three seasons. The best player on the best team is not necessarily the best player in the league, but in this case, he probably was.
Bill Russell
A difficult player to evaluate 40 years later, because so many of his strengths don’t show up in the stats. Russell was one of the greatest defensive players of all time, but we don’t have his block or steal statistics. He was one of the greatExcelsior College Size: 4.625" x 7"
est rebounders of all time, but we don’t know how many were offensive rebounds. He is perhaps the greatest winner in the history of professional sports, and that has never shown up on the stat sheets. The year before Russell arrived, Boston was a good team: 39-33, second in the East. He played 13 seasons with the Celtics, and the Celtics won 11 championships in those 13 years. When he retired, they missed the playoffs each of the next two seasons. Those teams had other Hall of Famers, plus a legendary coach, but Russell brought everything together. The dynasty began when he arrived and ended when he retired. He was named NBA MVP five times. My favorite NBA season is one I’m too young to remember: 1961-62. It was a year of legendary individual accomplishments; the league’s stars have never shined so brightly. Bob Pettit averaged 31 points and 19 rebounds per game. Walt Bellamy averaged 32 ppg, 19 rpg, and led the NBA in field goal percentage. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double (30.8 pts, 12.4 reb, 11.5 ast). Wilt Chamberlain averaged 48.5 minutes, 50.4 points, and 25.7 rebounds. And none of them won MVP. Bill Russell did. Statistically, that’s hard to condone, but Russell led the Celtics to the league’s best record and a championship. Would the Celtics have been just as good with Chamberlain or Pettit? Would the Hawks or Lakers

or Warriors have won 11 championships with Russell patrolling the paint? We’ll never know — probably not, to both questions — but we do know that Russell was an outstanding rebounder, defender, and team player, the greatest winner in the history of professional basketball.
Wilt Chamberlain
Michael Jordan averaged 30.1 points per game, with 6.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists. Wilt Chamberlain averaged 30.1 points per game, with 22.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists. Jordan averaged 2.8 steals per game. Chamberlain probably averaged 3-4 blocks. Jordan shot 49.7%. Chamberlain, 54%. Wilt led the NBA in scoring seven times, in rebounding 10 times, in assists once, in field goal percentage nine times, and in minutes eight times. He averaged 35 points a game five times, 20 rebounds a game 10 times, 5 assists four times, and he shot 60% three times (actually over 64.9% all three years). Chamberlain’s accomplishments are legendary (even if we’re only talking about his basketball accomplishments). Fifty points per game, 100 in a single game, 72.7 FG% his final season. He was an unparalleled offensive force. In the 2010-11 season, MVP Derrick Rose scored 2,026 points. In the 196162 season, Wilt scored 4,029 points — 2,000 more than Rose. And that was an 80-game season, not 82. How do you even wrap your mind around that, separate the man from the legend? Chamberlain was also the greatest rebounder of his day. Well, him and Russell. Chamberlain’s career record for rebounds, 2,664 ahead of Russell and many thousands ahead of everyone else, will probably never fall. Contrary to popular belief, he was also a generous passer, with more assists than any center except Abdul-Jabbar. Chamberlain was a far better offensive player than Russell, but he also averaged more boards and more assists. As a defensive player, he was not Russell’s equal, but apart from his rival in Boston, he probably blocked more shots than anyone in his day. Because he is so often compared to Russell, a reputation has unfairly settled on Chamberlain as not being a winner. His first year with the Warriors, they improved by 17 games. When they traded him, they dropped from 48-32 to 17-63. He played on championship teams with both the Sixers and the Lakers. He was named Finals MVP in ‘72, and probably would have been in ‘67 if the award had existed. Chamberlain played all but two minutes of the playoffs that season, shooting 57.9%, averaging 29 rebounds and 9 assists. What a choker, right? Who is the greatest center in history? Some say Mikan. Some, Russell. Many fans believe it was Abdul-Jabbar. My choice is the Big Dipper.
defensive center since Bill Russell, and Olajuwon was no slouch on offense. He scored 2,000 points four times, grabbed over 4,000 offensive rebounds in his career, and was never vulnerable to the hack-a-Shaq strategies that limited O’Neal’s effectiveness on offense. And whereas Shaq has been in and out of the lineup for the last 10 seasons — playing 70 games only twice — Olajuwon was a steady player, someone the team could count on year-in, yearout. They were both great players, and the gap between them is not wide, but it seems to me to favor Olajuwon.
Abdul-Jabbar
Abdul-Jabbar could have won a few MVPs just with his offense. An efficient shooter both on the floor (with his legendary sky hook) and at the line, he ranked among the league’s top 10 scorers 13 times, made the top five 10 times. But Abdul-Jabbar wasn’t a one-dimensional offensive powerhouse. He was an awesome rebounder, who averaged 11.2 per game in a 20-year career. He was a great assist man, the leader among centers by over 1,000. He led the league in blocked shots at least four times — maybe more, since the stats weren’t kept until he had already played four seasons. And Abdul-Jabbar, as much as any player in history, proved that while he worked well with his teammates, his success wasn’t just because of them. He played on six championship teams, one with the Bucks and five with the Lakers. He won Finals MVP honors with both teams. He won six regular-season MVP awards, three with each team. Abdul-Jabbar is probably best remembered for his years with Magic Johnson, and he was still a great player then, but in the ‘70s, Kareem was a singular force, by far the greatest player in basketball.
Hakeem Okajuwon
Olajuwon and O’Neal should probably be regarded as something very close to even. I ranked Olajuwon ahead because of consistency and defense. O’Neal was a sensational offensive player. He led the NBA three times in points and 10 times in field goal percentage. He was also a good defensive player, blocked 200 shots four times, as many as 286 one season. Olajuwon was a sensational defender. He blocked 200 shots for 12 seasons in a row, blocked more than 286 shots four times, blocked 1,100 more than Shaq in his career. Hakeem the Dream is also the only player in recorded history with 200 steals and 200 blocks in the same season (1988-89). Shaq was not a poor defensive player, but Hakeem was probably the best For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280
