The Hollywood star will join Scarlett Johansson in Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, a film following the legendary director’s struggle to bring the most chilling movie ever made to life on the big screen. So does she fall prey to Anthony Perkins’ deranged motel owner– manager, Norman Bates? Fortunately for her, no. Instead, per Deadline, Biel will essay the role of Vera Miles, the actress who played Lila Crane in the classic 1960 horror thriller and managed to escape from Bates in Psycho’s finale.

Chappy’s on Eagle’s Wings I would like to share with you a message about springtime―the time of year when much of the world is restored to life after the dead of winter. This month, the Christian world remembers the account of an early spring morning at Passover, when some grieving women solemnly went to a garden sepulcher. They were going with prepared spices and ointments to anoint the crucified body of their Master. However, when they arrived, the tomb was open and empty. Then they heard Heavenly messengers proclaim: “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.” They remembered that Jesus had said, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” The women went out and proclaimed the good news, that He again lives and had broken the bands of death.

Technology &
By Col. Phillip R. Cuccia
T
he chief futurist for Cisco, Dave Evans, describes it as “The Technology Avalanche” — the exponential increase in technological breakthroughs that, like an avalanche, will disruptively and permanently change the landscape. Future “disruptive” technologies will cer-
tainly change the way we conduct war. An excellent example of a “disruptive” technological breakthrough that has been developed over the past decade is 3D printing. This is a relatively simple procedure whereby layers of material are printed on top of one another resulting in three dimensional items from toys to car shells, and they are fully assembled at the
completion of the process. Currently biotechnologists are looking at the engineering applications where organs and body parts are built using the same 3D printing techniques. In March 2011, Dr. Anthony Atala from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, gave a presentation at a technology conference where he printed a 3D human kidney model on stage and explained how he is working on the technology to replace living cells as the printing matter to print a living organ. In 2009, a team of Italian and Swedish bioengineers developed the “smart hand,” the first artificial hand with feeling. In the same year, a team of Spanish researchers discovered a protein, RGS-14, which produces a near photographic memory enhancer. In June 2011, the Texas Heart Institute developed a reliable artificial heart with no clogs or breakdowns. As humans accept more and more technologies to repair or replace unhealthy tissue, futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts that at some point in time man and machine will merge to become a new species, dubbed “singularity.” Kurzweil forecasts that in the 2030s nanobots will expand our minds through the merger of biological and nonbiological, or “machine,” intelligence. Many, including Evans, are not fully convinced about “singularity,” but other futurists find the concept plausible. Regardless of how far we
trend toward singularity, the moral impacts and related decisions will be profound — particularly in the realm of warfare. Historically, we have seen how the rapid advances made during the two decades between the Spanish-American War (1898) and the end of World War 1 (1918) changed the way war was conducted. The new technological advances in aircraft, tanks, submarines, battleships, artillery, machine guns, poison gas, flame throwers, and high explosives had permanent effects. The upcoming decade of technological advances in genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics will do the same in our lifetime, and the impact on warfare will be tremendous. Evans maintains that by 2050, $1,000 worth of computing power will equal the processing power of all human brains on earth. His predictions for the next 40 years are based on the notion that the rate of technology innovation is accelerating faster than most estimations. The exponential growth in computing power, data storage, bandwidth, and information are almost unimaginable. He considers the possibility of “smart dust,” which will connect everything to the Internet, making it possible to monitor and manage our environment. Language barriers will disappear as computers enable instantaneous interpretation. Computers will possess not only exponential cognitive abilities relative to

humans, but will also be “self-aware.” Like Kurzweil, some futurists are convinced that many humans will eventually accept electronic enhancements, enabling the brain to connect with the cloud and hence become more competitive for jobs. This eventuality will have a profound impact on the military as people, in addition to machines, will become increasingly susceptible to cyber attacks.
to automobiles to cows, which for example have their health monitored. From a military perspective, imagine an environment where “things” are trying to defeat other “things” over the Internet. Imagine an environment where the computer itself then gives the recommended course of action to the commander. Humans can develop trust in one another and varying levels of trust within staff sections. How
Future “disruptive” technologies will certainly change the way we conduct war. Our strategists are currently thinking about this in general terms. As the current Joint Operational Environment document points out: “In many ways the world of 2030 could appear nearly as strange to us today as the world of 2000 would have to an observer from 1900.” Most futurists see this as a reality. Certainly this “avalanche” of emerging technologies will have an enormous impact on the way we conduct future wars. Evans has presented research which he calls the “Internet of things” where he points out that at some time in 2008, more “things” became connected to the Internet through the use of a computer than there are humans connected to the Internet. These “things” are everything from sensors
will future commanders react when it is time to make a critical decision between conflicting advice from a computer versus an analysis from the collective intuition of a staff? We have, as a learning institution, begun to think “outside of the box.” Perhaps it is now time to start thinking outside of the room, and then outside of the building. Even though we do not know exactly how the upcoming “Technology Avalanche” will change our world, we can be certain that our future leadership must be ready to deal with scenarios that we cannot even comprehend today. Boots on the Ground and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder By Richard Matz
J
ust recently I read an article online about proposed budget cuts. The figures bandied about indicated that government was going to cut military pay, medical and other benefits. Congress and the Obama administration bailed out Wall Street, the banks, the auto industry and the green industry. Now it appears that they are going to bail out of the obligation owed to the men and women in the military who dedicated and sacrificed their lives to preserve the freedoms that we all enjoy. The article went on to say that prescription medicines for certain drugs were going to be increased over 300% to our troops. That includes the medications prescribed for PTSD. Also mentioned was a reduction in troop strength by 100,000. Who do you think will be eliminated first? Will they start at the top? Of course not. More than likely they will cut the “boots on the ground” soldiers who have been trained for the past four to 12 years to stabilize countries in which the U.S. was fighting.
We have the best officers and enlisted fighting men and women in the world. Most of these folks have been overseas in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghani-
stan. Imagine the psychological hardship of serving day after day in a country where you don’t know who is friend and who is foe. Imagine seeing fellow soldiers mutilated, killed or committing suicide. Now you take that soldier with those experiences and think he or she can assimilate seamlessly back into civilian life. Some do fine but many more don’t. They need the medical and psychological help the country owes them. Now we tell them because of the economy not only will they not receive their benefits, but good luck finding a job. There are hundreds of thousands of these veterans trying to make civilian life work. I want to paint a scenario that while unlikely, is not impossible. With the proposed cutting of medical benefits and increased medication costs, soldiers will be left to make do on their own in the throes of PTSD. They are hard-charging men and women who have been trained to kill the enemy and stay alive. In a struggle between a police officer who has been trained to restrain the enemy rather than kill, who will come out on top? Keeping veterans healthy, in therapy and on medication for PTSD is not only good for them, but for society. Why in the world would it even be conceivable
to cut veteran benefits when Congress has its own fancy insurance plan because they are too special to have what us regular folks use, and there are no pay reductions on the table for them. How about thinking outside of the box? Keep the 100,000 soldiers and build bases along the MexicanAmerican border to help with immigration and drug trafficking. It is quite obvious that the drug Czars along with their huge staffs aren’t able to keep the border safe. It is a poorly run government that chooses to cut the benefits of its military rather than clean up corruption and overspending within its own ranks. Left unabated, the U.S. government could end up no better than say that of Colombia or Mexico. Are these comments too negative or are they too real. Please respond and we will publish your ideas. Women rule the box office! By Liz Smith
“My dear, after a certain point in a woman’s life, the only thing that helps is champagne.”
T
hat was Bette Davis, clinking glasses with her onscreen (and off!) rival, Miriam Hopkins in the movie “Old Acquaintance.” This was one of the ripest and one of the last of Davis’ “women’s movies” of the 1940s Men were away at war, and women ruled the box office — as stars and as a potent audience. After World War II ended, women were fired from factories, shoved back into the house and restricted by Dior’s long-skirted, tightly corseted New Look. The image of women onscreen became less interesting, independent or dangerous. Female attendance dropped from its all-time highs. But these things are cyclical. And over the years the female audience has ebbed and flowed. (The 1950s had those overripe Douglas Sirk movies, like “Magnificent Obsession” and “Imitation of Life.” More recently, the first “Sex and the City” film drove women mad.) Now, we are seeing another uptick. It’s a fact that the majority of the audience for the “Twilight” series of films is heavily female — young women, in particular. Guys go along, but if they had to choose a vampire story, they’d rather watch HBO’s “True Blood.” Now, that same phenomenon has happened with “The Hunger Games,” which broke all sorts of box office records over the weekend. According to Entertainment Weekly, women — and not just teen/tween girls — made up 61 percent of the audience for “The Hunger Games,” though more men were eager to see this one, than any of the “Twilight” movies. Perhaps because of the much-discussed violence, or perhaps because Jennifer Lawrence is considered hot, especially when she narrows her eyes and wields that bow and arrows. (It can’t be the sex, because there was none of that in “The Hunger Games.” The “Twilight” movies entertain similarly chaste themes. They are not the wanton bloodsuckers of Anne Rice books; that’s for sure.) We don’t need a crystal ball to predict that when it comes time for the sequel — I’m surprised it’s not shooting right now, actually — the onscreen relationship between Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth will heat up. If the ladies jamming movie theaters right now have one complaint, it’s that there wasn’t more of Mr. Hemsworth. But fans of the books know he’s heavily featured in the second novel. Death games and depressed vampires. We’ve come a long way from Miss Davis in her Travis Banton or Orry-Kelly gowns and her champagne. But women still have the power, baby.

How Hitler happened while America watched By Liz Smith
“The times in which we live move too fast for the considered historian to record them. They move too quickly to permit the writing of long books about momentary phases. Ours is the age of the reporter.”
I
f you think that is a recent quote, a comment on our age of instant reporting, blogging and tweeting, you’re wrong. The above was written by Dorothy Thompson, the famous journalist (and wife of Sinclair Lewis) in 1932. She was explaining the big rush of her short book, “I Saw Hitler!” Dorothy’s quote is culled from a longer book, coming from Simon and Schuster. It is titled “Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power,” written by Andrew Nagorski. This book chronicles observations — from letters, diaries and unpublished memoirs — of American reporters, embassy workers and even tourists who worked and played in Germany from 1922 to 1941. It is riveting stuff. Today, people continue to ask, “How could it have happened? How could Hitler have mesmerized a nation, planned a global conquest and attempted to exterminate the Jewish race?” Mr. Nagorski’s book goes a long way toward explaining. With few exceptions, most people — even savvy journalists embedded in Germany — simply could not believe what they were seeing. They didn’t take Hitler seriously ... they were isolationists ... they didn’t really care that much. And anyway, no one man — certainly not one as physically unprepossessing as Hitler — could truly sway all of Germany, could he? (Only his icy blue eyes distinguished him.) I read this book in one terrible gulp. You know what’s coming, and you want to scream, “Wake up before it’s too late!” There are never enough examinations of this period. It wasn’t the 14th century; it was the 20th. With cars and movies and most of the luxuries, modern conveniences and civilized attitudes we have today. Yet it happened. And, yes, of course, it could happen again. It does, in fact; “ethnic cleansing” has occurred in Bosnia and Africa. Amongst the cast of real-life characters there was one odd, infuriatingly flighty standout. Her name was Martha Dodd, daughter of William E. Dodd, who served as the American ambassador to Germany for a number of years. Martha was pretty and promiscuous, and spent her time in Germany bedding as many attractive men as possible — Nazi or otherwise. At first she was sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Then she became disenchanted and switched her attentions to communist Russia, which she considered an “ideal” way of life. She married an American financier, but became a Soviet spy! Eventually she and her husband fled the United States. They died in Prague many years after the war. Martha was kind of a thoughtless idiot, but as she kept popping up throughout the book, I wondered if her story might make an interesting film? The heroine doesn’t always have to be nice, after all. In any case, Martha is only one of many who populate the pages of “Hitlerland.” This is an important, chilling book.

Tidbits Cherokee Legend Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s rite of Passage? His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him .. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We, too, are never alone. Even when we don’t know it, God is watching over us, Sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him. If you liked this story, pass it on. If not, you took off your blindfold before dawn. Moral of the story: Just because you can’t see God, Doesn’t mean He is not there. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Oceanside Exhibit Dedicated to Local Marines
“Penumbra: An Ode to Oceanside in a Time of War” by Geoffrey Cunningham will be on exhibit at the Oceanside Museum of Art now through June 3, 2012. When you live in Oceanside, the war is never too far from home. Camp Pendleton has lost more soldiers to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than any other military base in the U.S. The city of Oceanside has no proper memorial to honor them, nor place for resident to take pause, morn, reflect or even release the weight of war. This exhibit is a simple gesture from the artist created as an ode to his hometown. The museum is located at 704 Pier View Way. Entry is always free for military and their dependents with ID.

Local Artist’s Work Will Appear on ‘Army Wives’
By Linda McIntosh, U-T San Diego Two paintings hanging in entrances at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and the Corpsman Field Training Center on base will be featured on the set of the TV show “Army Wives” this spring. “Wings of Hope” and “Hidden Wings,” battlefield paintings by Point Loma artist Todd Krasovetz, are slated to appear in episode 7 of the upcoming sixth season of Lifetime’s series, which follows the lives of several Army wives and their families on a military base. The paintings show Navy corpsmen tending to wounded comrades in the field in what “Army Wives” set decorator Missy Ricker called a perfect fit for the set. Ricker found the pieces on two websites, militaryartposters.com and official-military-art.com, while combing the Internet for art to hang on the

He was commissioned by the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton to paint “Wings of Hope” in 2001, the first of seven military installations he has completed over the last decade; four more are in the works, including one
for the new hospital at Camp Pendleton. Krasovetz started painting military subjects as a tribute to service members and their families. “I want the families of wounded veterans to feel appreciated,” said Kraso-
vetz, whose painting “New American Pride,” hangs in the waiting room of the hospital’s emergency department. A major influence on Krasovetz’s military art is his brother, Scott Krasovetz, a retired a Navy corpsman who served two deployments with the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton. His brother and comrade Matt Murphy, with whom he was deployed in Iraq became subjects Krasovetz used to paint “Wings of Hope.” As a corpsman, Scott Krasovetz administered aide in the field to Murphy, ultimately saving his life, which is reflected in the angel wings on the corpsman in the painting, “My paintings are not your typical military art,” Krasovetz said.” I use angelic images and there’s a spiritual side. Boots in Business Program By Jose A. Lopez Boots in Business, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Military Mentoring Initiative, has hit the ground running, and is already plac-
ing active service members based out of Camp Pendleton into local businesses for job shadowing and mentoring. After launching in November, the program has attracted more than 30 participating businesses, willing to open their doors to spend time mentoring active servicemembers, allowing them to see what it’s actually like to be in the civilian workforce. One of the program’s participants was Matthew Goodacre, a 25-year-old radio operator that is leaving the Marines in April after serving for nearly eight years. Goodacre spent several days over the course of a week shadowing and talking to employees at Air Products and Chemicals, AT&T, Datron World Communications and the La Costa Resort and Spa. Goodacre, who will be returning to his hometown in Wisconsin, plans to study Information Technology at the University of Wisconsin, Milwuakee with the hopes of pursuing a career in computer security. Goodacre said he decided to participate in Boots in Business because he wanted to see if his plans for school would be the right decision. After the program, he noted, he’s even more determined to pursue his intended career course. For more information, contact Madonna May, mmay@carlsbad.org

Manning’s heavilyanticipated decision came after visits with the Titans, 49ers, Cardinals, and Broncos. Ironically, the last person to learn of Manning’s decision was LeBron James. The “V” is For “Vertical,” Chocolate Thund-her, Dunkin’ Nonuts, or the Shot Heard Around — Baylor’s Brittney Griner dunked in the Bears 76-57 NCAA tournament win over Florida on Tuesday night. Whatever the case may be, the experience will definitely leave you changed — and somewhat less tamed. Johnson was originally docked 25 points, while Knaus faced a six-race suspension and a $100,000 fine. NASCAR’s reversal was an indication of its new “Boys, have it back” policy. Agent Zero Tolerance, or I Guess This Means He’ll Be “Packing,” or Hired Gun — The Grizzlies signed former Washington Wizard guard Gilbert Arenas to beef up their 17th– ranked scoring offense. In light of Arenas past transgressions, Grizzlies officials have asked Arenas to maintain a low profile, which would, ironically, make him a “concealed weapon.” When the Starter Becomes the Backup Plan, or Second Choice Words — Alex Smith agreed to remain with the San Francisco 49ers, even after the team seriously courted Peyton Manning. Smith signed a three-year deal that could pay him up to $33 million. the history of basketball T
he history of basketball finds it way back to the year 1891. It was a Canadian physical education instructor by the name of James Naismith who introduced the game of basketball to the world. He was born in Ontario and taught physical education at McGill University and Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith, during his stint with Springfield College, a YMCA training school during that time, invented the indoor sport with able support and guidance from the American phys-ed specialist Luther Hasley. The game commenced with 18 men at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Naismith was given a deadline of 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide “an athletic distraction” (in the words of Hasley) to the nasty and disorderly class. It was a tough call for Naismith, who had to exercise a lot of patience and infuse positive enthusiasm into the minds of his students to engage in an outdoor game that was to be played indoors in the best way possible. He recalled a game he used to play as a child and improvised on its concept. Naismith was instrumental in laying down 13 rules for the basketball game. The rules stated that the ball should be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. He made it clear that a person could not run with the ball. The player should throw it from the place from which he caught the ball in the first place. Players had to refrain from using the fist when handling or batting the ball. He had termed shouldering, holding, tripping, pushing or striking in any way of an opponent as a foul in the first instance. If things of this nature happened the second time, the person who caused the infringement of the rule would be disqualified or would not be substituted at all. If any side made three consecutive fouls, it was to be counted as a goal for the opposing side. Naismith also made it clear that if the ball went out of bounds, it had to be thrown into the field of play by the person touching it. This player had the

right to hold the ball for only five seconds. If held longer, the chance to throw went to the opposing side. He gave special importance to the umpire who had to judge the player and report to the referee when players made three consecutive fouls. He defined the time period of the game as being comprised of two fifteen-minute halves with fifteen minutes breaks in between. Naismith concluded that the side making the most goals was to be termed as winner.

Best Cars Under $20,000 The quality of the sedans buyers can find priced under $20,000 has never been better. And just in the nick of time for car buyers challenged by the wobbly economy. It is true that some true-mid-sized sedans, such as Kia Optima and Volkswagen Passat actually start their sticker prices below $20,000. The Passat, for example, starts at $19,995 if you price it on AOL Autos. But, realistically, these cars wind up costing thousands more by the time they are properly outfitted and destination charges are applied. So, we are sticking to sedans priced legitimately under $20,000 by the time you drive them away. And we have applied come up with a Top-Five ranking based on our knowledge of the vehicle’s quality, diving dynamics, aesthetics, value and track record.

MSRP: $16,500 - $22,700 Invoice: $15,635 - $21,112 Fuel Economy: 26mpg City, 36mpg Hwy The styling of the new Focus is light years better than the old model, and now a category leader in our opinion.
MSRP: $15,345 - $20,595 Invoice: $14,918 - $19,727 Fuel Economy: 29mpg City, 40mpg Hwy As much as we like the Chevy Cruze, and were tempted to call it a tie between that car and the Elantra, we opted to give it to Elantra by a nose. We had support, too, as a jury of North American journalists gave the Elantra its Car of the Year award for 2011. Exterior styling is excellent, and, along with Ford Focus, has set a new standard in the compact sedan category.Elantra is the best total package and best sedan pound for pound, dollar for dollar under $20,000.

Leave Afghanistan now
Most wars have a turning point that either signals the road to victory or the ditch of defeat. In Vietnam, the 1968 Tet Offensive by communist troops against South Vietnamese and American forces and their allies is regarded as the turning point in that conflict. Though communist forces suffered heavy losses, which would normally define defeat, CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite and others in the U.S. media, portrayed the operation as an allied loss, thus encouraging not only the anti-war movement, but North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops who believed all they had to do was hang on until America grew tired of the war and quit. By Cal Thomas
S
ince the Obama administration appears to care more about not offending those Afghans who want to kill Americans and since it has announced the deadline for the withdrawal of surge-level troops in Afghanistan for later this year, despite the fact that they have stymied the
efforts of Taliban insurgents to destabilize the country, maybe it’s time to pull all U.S. forces out and leave our puppet, Hamid Karzai, to his fate. The latest affront comes courtesy of the burning of Korans by U.S. soldiers on a military base near Kabul. Military officials maintain the Korans were being used by imprisoned jihadists to pass messages to other prisoners
and were confiscated and destroyed. A spokesman for the NATO-led force said the troops, ..”.should have known to check with cultural advisers to determine how to dispose of religious material properly.” For this unintended action, however, Karzai wants the soldiers to be put on trial and has asked NATO commanders to allow it. If they do, they will have disgraced their uniform. Does writing in a Koran desecrate it? One might expect it would, but the outrage is over the burning, not the writing. More than 1,700 Americans have died in and around Afghani-
stan and more than 14,000 have been wounded since the United States invaded shortly after September 11, 2011. And this is the thanks we get? How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless puppet. When do jihadists apologize for mass murder or religious persecution? Two years ago in Rasht, Iran, Youcef Nadarkhani, a Christian pastor who converted from Islam, was arrested on charges of apostasy. He has been sentenced to hang for his religious conversion. Anyone hear any apologies from “moderate” Muslims about that, much less attempts to shame the ayatollahs,

or label them apostates? The New York Times reported recently that President Obama’s threepage apology letter to President Karzai contained these sentences: “I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident. I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies.” This will only serve as further evidence to our enemies in Afghanistan of America’s weakness and lack of resolve in what is likely to be a very long and global war. American impatience, fatigue and a desire not to offend, does not bode well for an American victory or for Afghan liberation. No one worried about offending our enemies during World War II. That’s why the forces for good won. Can Afghanistan be stabilized so as not to pose a threat to America and
Think about this After reading the headlines today about the US soldier who shot up Afghanistan civilians, I couldn’t help noticing an irony. There is all this clamor to try this guy quickly and execute him, never mind his having suffered a traumatic brain injury. Yet this Major Hasan, who shot up Fort Hood while screaming Allah akbar, still hasn’t stood trial, and they are still debating whether he was insane, even with the clear evidence regarding his motive: slay as many infidels as possible. So we have a guy in a war zone who cracks, and he must

American interests? Probably not, if the surge forces pull out on schedule and America continues to fight under restrictive and self-imposed rules of war while the enemy does not. So what’s the point? Are we to stay only until after the election so President Obama won’t be asked, “Who lost Afghanistan?” If our troops are coming out anyway and if the administration can’t define victory, or commit the resources necessary to achieve it, waiting longer only ensures more casualties. As with Vietnam, that is a waste of blood and treasure. Ask the ghosts of the more than 58,000 fallen whose names appear on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, or the ghosts of the politicians who are responsible for putting them in their graves.

But this Muslim psychiatrist who was stateside in a nice safe office all day murders 13, wounds 29 of our own guys, and they try to argue the poor lad suffered posttraumatic stress syndrome, from listening to real soldiers who had actual battle experience. Two and a half years later, they still haven’t tried the heinous criminal.

In the Master we can know that there is resurrection after death, but we can also find new life in the here and now; a new way of living, sometimes even a rebirth, all before we ever go to the grave. The Master said, “He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.” Traditionally, it is during the Easter Season that we contemplate the resurrection and the miracle of rebirth; but, it has been my experience, that this feeling of renewal is possible throughout the year, if we simply realize that it is in the giving of our life in service to others that we truly find it. A story by Ben C. Rich shares this message. It is entitled,
If man, who is as a babe compared with God in intelligence, could resurrect a cup from that little world of liquid, do you think it impossible for Him [the Fountainhead of intelligence and power] to restore your body after it has been scattered throughout this little world of ours? As the restoring of the cup in our story appears simple to us now [after being explained], so will the resurrection be understood when we are on the other side. We see this miracle of rebirth regularly during the springtime of each year. We see all kinds of plants [all but decomposed to the eye] spring up anew, sending forth bright green foliage, budding with colorful flowers or bearing new fruit. It can be the same for each of us: by giving our life in service to others, we see it manifest itself anew in the lives of those we serve, and return, once again, to us much richer and fuller for our effort. As an example, check this website of a town in Colorado that is wanting to serve our military…www.welcomehomemontrose.org It is a joy to assist this group of people wanting to serve… Why is this time of year filled with light and a renewed joy for life? A poem by Ralph M. J. Worth expresses it in its title, “It’s Spring”.
“The Silver Cup”. “A man received a beautiful cup from a friend as a birthday gift. They were very much attached to each other and after the friend died, the sentimental value of the cup increased a hundredfold, and the man wouldn’t think of parting with it. One day he took it to work with him to show it to a fellow workman, setting it upon a shelf. While moving some valuable goods during the day, he accidentally knocked the cup off into a vessel of liquid. He thought it was only dirty water, and waited until he had finished moving the goods, before seeking to remove the cup. When he returned, the cup had disappeared, and upon investigation he found that the vessel contained nitric acid and not water, and that it dissolved the silver cup. He was overcome with grief, and his employer, noticing his sorrow asked him what had happened. When he had heard the story and learned that the cup was made in a neighboring town, he startled the man with this remark: “Don’t feel bad, my friend, I promise that you shall have your cup again.” The working man, thinking his words meant that he should receive the amount of its real value, or another cup, explained that it was not its cost; neither would another cup fill its place. “Never mind, I say, whether you believe my words or not, I promise, you shall again have your cup, and it shall be made of the same identical silver, having the same form, and being composed of nothing but the same metal. I don’t mean the same kind, but the very same silver you dropped into that fluid.” With this he took a few handfuls of common salt, flung them into the liquid, and there formed in the solution a white solid. This he removed, dried, and heated in a crucible, and the result was a lump of silver of the highest luster. “Now, you see,” said the kind-hearted man, how easy it is to restore when you understand the methods by which it is done. All the silver composing that cup of yours is now in my hands. How easy is it for me to have it remolded in the same molds, and who will say you have not the same cup resurrected from the grave.”
The reeds have ceased their rattling sound And tracks appear in softened ground; The whistling of the peepers bring The entrance of an early spring. Now pushing up the meadow’s edge Are crocuses beneath the hedge; A million buds are coming out, Forsythia blooming all about. A sense of kinship swiftly brings, A love for all these growing things, And the doorway where I stand, Enchanted by the greening land, With all the riches of a king, My heart cries out, “Its spring, it’s spring!”
May we take this time of year to renew at least a part of ourselves, to join in this resurrection of life all around us. May we seek to know the feeling of giving ourselves away to others in the Master’s service. And then, may we receive the joy and blessings of finding life even richer and fuller than before, is my prayer this week for us all. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… (Isaiah 40:31)Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI Ron Ringo, Retired Chaplain Navy/ Marine Corps holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling, and is a Certified Trauma Specialist. www.lifetraumasolutions.com www.serviceforhumanityfoundation.org

Homebuyers Settle Into New Hi-tech Homes
Solaire’s one-of-a-kind, hi-tech townhomes have attracted thousands of homeshoppers to North County’s newest urban-loft-like residences and 30 new homeowners have already moved in. A variety of San Diegans in their early ’30s are now living at Solaire including newlyweds with a baby on the way, a Navy SEAL, San Diego County sheriffs and Border Patrol deputies, a Poway school teacher, Qualcomm engineers and two friends from college who decided to buy homes in the same neighborhood. Priced from the high $200,000s, Solaire showcases open floor plans, sleek fixtures and cutting-edge electronics, including a Control4® home automation system already built in. As part of an innovative approach to home building, ColRich has intersected the urban and suburban design sensibilities. “Solaire’s progressive home design coupled with its outstanding location offers homebuyers a metropolitan approach to modern living while surrounded by North County’s coveted suburban amenities,” said Kelly Hiltscher, Director of Sales and Marketing for ColRich. “As the only new homes in California where a Control4® system comes standard with each home, Solaire is a really unusual opportunity to live in a truly contemporary home.” Efficient three-story townhomes capture the mood of funky city lofts with clean lines and uncluttered living spaces. Solaire’s Control4® home automation system effortlessly syncs up each home’s electronics at the touch of a button. Homeowners control entry, security, climate, lights, multi-media entertainment systems and energy reduction via mobile control. This variety of high-tech functions can be managed from an in-wall touchscreen, a television screen or smart device. A small camera at the front door provides a video preview of guests from any touchscreen or TV inside the home. From speaker points to audio switches and iPod docks to media players, the Control4® system also enables the consolidated operation of the homeowner’s own home entertainment components. The “goodnight” function secures the home and assures peace of mind by setting nighttime lighting and temperature, locking the front door and arming an optional security system. The Control4® system also economizes energy usage and maximizes savings on utility costs by giving homeowner’s the ability to easily monitor electricity usage. While Solaire residents dwell in a modern habitat, they play in a community with coveted neighborhood ambiance, including a private community pool and barbecue lounge. From dog parks to trail treks to beach recreation, Solaire is located at the crossroads to North County and its ample amenities. Residents enjoy proximity
