MILITARY UPDATE By Tom Philpott I MP

Witnesses rally round post 9/11 GI Bill reforms Senior officials at the departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense have joined veterans’ groups and representatives of academia to endorse a comprehensive bill from Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) to reform the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Still to be determined is how to pay for the many provisions in the Post9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010 (S. 3447) with estimated costs seen as high but still to be calculated, and alarms sounding across government over soaring budget deficits. Akaka, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, added cautious remarks of his own at a July 21 hearing on his bill, describing it only as a “starting point for discussion about needed changes.” One of the more costly provisions of S 3447 would expand the new GI Bill beyond covering college courses to any type of training that veterans might

want, from vocational schools and apprenticeships to flight instruction. Post-9/11 vets who currently take non-degree courses must make an irreversible decision to use their less generous Montgomery GI Bill benefit. Another Akaka provision would make National Guard members eligible for the new GI Bill based on time spent on active duty through Title 32 call-ups for domestic emergencies or homeland security missions, or to serve fulltime under the Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) program. Guard members activated under this authority since 9-11 were overlooked for Post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility in 2008 in the scramble to shape and pass a final bill. Last year, by Guard estimates, the oversight had denied more than 75,000 Army Guard and 2500 Air Guard members access to the best veterans’ education benefit since World War II. Even more Guard members would qualify today given recent call ups for the oil disaster and border security. A third key provision of S. 3447 would eliminate what Akaka described

as “a complicated, confusing and, in some cases, inequitable calculation of State-by-State tuition and fee caps” for setting Post-9/11] benefits. A simplified system still would ensure that vets in degree programs at public institutions anywhere in the U.S. pay little, if any, out of pocket costs. For those enrolled in private or foreign colleges, tuition and fees payments would match the lessor of actual college charges or of a national tuition-and-fee cap. The cap would be the average of tuition and fees across both public and private institutions for the most recent academic year. Advocates for students, for college and university administators and for VA education advisers endorsed this and

More surprising was Akaka’s charge that the Department of Defense has gone too far in allowing almost all career force members who stay in service for six additional years, or until retirement after 20 years, to transfer unused Post9/11 education benefits to their family members. “I do believe DoD has too broadly extended this benefit to all service members as they reach the required length of service,” Akaka told Robert E. Clark, assistant director for accession policy at DoD. “I believe the more targeted use of the benefit was envisioned in order to retain individuals in critical skill areas or difficult-toreplace personnel.”

One of the more costly provisions of S 3447 would expand the new GI Bill beyond covering college courses to any type of training that veterans might want, from vocational schools and apprenticeships to flight instruction. Post-9/11 vets who currently take non-degree courses must make an irreversible decision to use their less generous Montgomery GI Bill benefit. most other provisions in the Akaka bill. Two other important parts would: -- Provide for a modified living allowance to vets seeking degrees solely through online or distance learning if at more than the half-time rate. They would get 50 percent of the allowance payable to resident students. -- Provide enrolled Post-9/11 students still on active duty, or their enrolled spouses, the book allowance of up to $1,000 annually. In reviewing details of S. 3447, Keith M. Wilson, director of VA’s education service, said over and over that his department would support or “not oppose” this or that provision on condition that “appropriate and acceptable PAYGO offsets” are identified to cover the added costs. PAYGO refers to pay-as-you-go provisions in Senate and House budget rules which means that any increase in spending on new entitlements be offset by lowered spending on other mandatory spending accounts. The rules can be ignored, as they were to pass the Post9/11 GI bill. But Wilson’s frequent reference to the PAYGO hurdle made clear that the Obama administration’s support for GI Bill reform is conditional. Akaka said it was “vital” to put the “streamlining and operational improvements in place as soon as possible.” But he also stressed the need to control GI Bill fraud and abuse, and to ensure that “only programs offering legitimate education and training are approved for benefits.”

Akaka’s bill proposes moving the cost of the GI Bill transferability feature from VA to the Department of Defense. With DoD opposing such a shift, Akaka let loose with some rare criticism. Clark reminded the chairman that DoD “had concerns” back in 2008 that a more generous GI Bill would lead to an exodus of members after their first term to use those education benefits. “And we were very pleased to see the transferability” feature in the final bill, Clark said. “We did not believe that this….was to be limited to any specific targeting,” Clark continued. “We believe that every soldier, sailor, airmen and Marine that chooses to stay, and that we want to stay, should have the same opportunity to share their earned benefit with their family members.” Akaka let the matter drop. It remains to be seen whether he will have more to say on limiting GI Bill transferability, or shifting those costs, when his committee marks up a final education reform bill later this year. Wilson said any changes to the Post9/11 GI Bill should not take effect before Aug. 1, 2011. Any earlier start date could put at risk VA efforts to ensure timely, accurate GI Bill payments for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Good Day Editor, I absolutely loved the 2 page spread in the Sport section, all about Baseball. It is awesome to open up and see this. I am ecstatic about baseball!!! Also, Ozzi, I agree he should be piped deep down. His ego has got the best of him for sure. As you can probably tell, I am from Chicago but def. a Cubs fan. Back there it is a HUGE rivalry and with Aramis being hurt, that hurts all the fans as well. It is hard on us knowing, he is hurt and a HUGE part of the defense and offense for the Cubs. I am sure it will all come together and the Cubs will win the World Series soon, Lets not make it to 105 years men!! Cub Fan from Chicago Sgt. of Marines, Camp Pendleton Dear Cub fan, Yep, we certainly get the picture, you certainly are a baseball fan. Glad you enjoyed the article. Don’t tell anyone, but I just found out yesterday that Trevor Hoffman was playing for Milwaukee, and has been gone from the Padres for two years! Hello Editor, Cell Phones at Summer Camp? ABSOLUTELY!!! As a mom, I completely agree with letting children have their cell phones at the summer camps. If my child, age of 12, were to go for 2 weeks to a summer camp, in the middle of nowhere, with complete strangers, I would not let her go without a cell phone. As we all know, and as the article reads, Pedophiles are prone to Summer camps. My child without her phone would make me worry constantly. I honestly believe the reason Camps are diminishing throughout the country is because they are not allowing children to go with cell phones. There is danger lurking everywhere. Concerned Mom 29 Palms Dear Concerned, I think that you were missing the point of Mitch Albom’s commentary. He was saying that we can’t live in constant fear and buy into the many horror stories

Wounded Warriors dive into Ocean Therapy Program By Lance Cpl. Damien A. Gutierrez, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Marines with Wounded Warrior Battalion West did not let their injuries slow them down as they took part in the Ocean Therapy Program hosted by a local foundation at Camp Del Mar’s beach, Camp Pendleton, July 20. Ocean Therapy sessions are held on base each year, and provide the Marines with an opportunity to learn to surf in an encouraging atmosphere, while focusing on the therapeutic benefits of the ocean. “This type of physical therapy is exactly what we need,” said Lance Cpl. James Grove, a participant of the therapy session. “I would have never thought that having so much fun could be considered therapy.” Before the Marines took to the waves, a team of volunteers ranging from mental health professionals to professional surfers held a group discussion to get familiar with the Marines. During the discussions, Marines, instructors and volunteers explained their particular situation and expressed

what they are hoping to accomplish from the program. “It’s very important that we talk with the Marines, get to know them and figure out what areas they need assistance in,” said Carly Rogers, creator of the Ocean Therapy Program. “Each year I am so impressed with the progress these Marines achieve; it’s almost as if they’ve been surfing their whole lives.” In order to better prepare the Marines for cutting up the waves, they are first taught the basics of surfing on shore. Then, they applied the fundamentals in the water with a personalized surf instructor. “There is just something about being out there in water that makes all my troubles go away,” said Groves. “When

I’m on my board nothing else matters except how much fun I’m having.” To conclude the affair, everyone gathered around for another group discussion and spoke about what they have learned and where they can improve. “I believe we are healing others and ourselves, one wave at a time,” said Nancy Miller, program coordinator.

Marines, sailors get lesson in submarines, aquatic mammals By 2nd Lt. Kyle Thomas

MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE ALBANY, Ga. — Marines and sailors from Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany toured one of the world’s largest nuclear powers, July 12. The nuclear power, the USS Maryland, is a Trident class submarine in port at Naval Submarine Bases in Kings Bay, Ga. “This tour is a part of a professional military education that is meant to give us a broader understanding of how other units and services accomplish the mission,” said Col. Terry V. Williams, commanding officer, MCLB Albany. “This understanding helps us perform our jobs better.” The tour consisted of numerous sections of USS Maryland, including the berthing area, mess quarters as well as the command deck, torpedo deck and other compartments. “The unusual aspect of the submarine is that the racks are near the tubes that hold the ballistic missiles,” said Navy Senior Chief Cole D. Alcorn, ship’s diving officer, USS Maryland. “This compartment is called ‘Sherwood Forest’ because all of the tubes look like trees. This is by far the largest portion of the submarine.” For one sailor on the tour, the trip was a homecoming. Navy Lt. Marvin Albers, deputy resident officer in charge of construction, Navy Facilities Southeast, MCLB Albany, served on the USS Maryland between 2006 and 2008 as the ship’s electronics officer, among other billets. “What people may or may not know is that when this submarine is loaded up [with nuclear missiles] it is the world’s

Page 6 August 1, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS ISL622 Military Press Ad.indd 1

7/9/10 1:17:23 PM

third largest nuclear power,” Albers said. “When I say that, of course, I am referring to just the submarine itself, not the entire submarine fleet. The first and second would be the United States and Russia, respectively.” Officers and staff noncommissioned officers also toured the Navy’s Marine Mammal Systems Detachment, which is comprised of aquatic mammal trainers, bottle-nosed dolphins and sea lions trained in interdiction and security operations. The contractors and aquatic mammals performed a mock demonstration, which consisted of a bottle-nosed dolphin marking a foreign object in the water. This was followed by a California sea lion spotting the mark and retrieving the foreign object. “It’s a two-part process,” said George Nishimura, lead supervisor, Marine Mammal Systems, Science Applications International Corporation. “The dolphin marks the foreign object which they are trained to spot and then the seal lion executes the second part which is the interdiction.” The trainers, who are contractors working for SAIC, train the mammals from the time that they are pups to perform security operations in areas like Naval Submarine Bases Kings Bay. The training process for California sea lions, specifically, take between four to five years. “Navy’s Marine Mammal Systems use dolphins and sea lions to find and mark the location of underwater objects. Dolphins use their technologically unmatched sonar, and sea lions use their sensitive underwater directional hearing and low-light vision to detect objects in the water and on the sea floor. The animals are trained to provide security by patrolling areas and identifying and marking objects for retrieval, including those presenting a danger to personnel,” according to investors.saic.com, SAIC’s official Web site. “Our primary job is the care of these aquatic mammals, Nishimura said. “If we don’t take good care of them and don’t ensure that we feed them right then they won’t pay attention to us. It’s as simple as that.” Nishimura, who was also a trainer at Sea World, in Orlando, Fla., says that living conditions of these mammals differ drastically from what many people may expect. “These mammals have a good bit of freedom. We never keep them pinned up for very long. We let them out into the wild to patrol and they always come back,” Nishimura said. “When they are out there they mainly forge for their own food. You can always tell when they are full because they come back and float on their backs. Of course, when they are back we have veterinarians from the Army to check and make sure that they are staying healthy.”

The Navy announced the implementation of its new Electronic Leave (E-Leave) system in a message July 27. According to NAVADMIN 252/10 all shore commands will use E-Leave to request, track and manage leave once their Command Leave Administrator (CLA) completes initial setup within the Navy Standard Integrated Personnel System (NSIPS) application. The Navy requires all PSDs, CSDs and shore commands to be fully using E-Leave by Oct. 31. Sailors, reviewers and approvers can access E-Leave

through NSIPS at https://nsips.nmci. navy.mil. “All shore commands will be able to begin at once on Aug. 1, and everything should be running smoothly by the Oct. 31 deadline,” said Art Tate, NSIPS/ ESR Implementation manager and fleet liaison. “We beta tested the E-Leave system from March 1 – April 13 and 99.3 percent of all transactions were accepted and processed,” said Milene Wagner, NSIPS E-Leave project manager. “Because the beta went so well we also extended the use of E-Leave to some sites in Gulfport, Miss., Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., Stennis Space Center, Miss., and in New Orleans. To date, all transactions were accepted and processed with a 99.7 percent pass rate for these sites.” The Navy originally announced plans to phase-out the traditional paper chit leave in NAVADMIN 103/10, replacing it with the new E-Leave system. E-Leave allows Sailors to electronically route leave chits through the chain of command for approval. “It allows commands to manage their own electronic leave control log. Commands will have full visibility in the system to identify the status of any Sailor’s request and easily track and account for all Sailors on leave at any given time by using the electronic reports capability that each CLA will have access to produce,” said John Courtney, Navy Electronic Leave program manager. “Once E-Leave is implemented, command’s leave processing will be automated, ensuring pay and entitlements are properly accounted for with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.” Afloat implementation for ships with NSIPS servers onboard is planned to start in October and run approximately 24 months as ships’ NSIPS servers receive appropriate software updates. A separate message will provide further instruction for afloat commands. “We will implement the system on ships as quickly as we can,” said Tate. CLAs will have the capability to manage E-Leave transactions to include correction and cancellation. E-Leave will automatically check-out Sailors on leave 24 hours after initial start date and will automatically check-in Sailors 72 hours after the return date. CLA or ESR self-service users will also have the ability to request an extension. CLAs at each command will be accountable for all leave transactions processed via E-Leave. For CLA access contact the local NSIPS access manager. Sailors who have not yet established their web ESR Self-Service access can do so at https://nsips.nmci.navy.mil. Afloat Sailors with NSIPS Server onboard will also need to establish an Afloat ESR account each time they report to a new afloat command. It is now mandatory for all active-duty and Reserve personnel to establish and maintain an ESR Self-Service account as the Navy phases out paper service records. The 2009 Sailor of the Year winners, who for the first time in history are all women, were meritoriously advanced to Chief Petty Officer during a ceremony held at the Navy Memorial July 22. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead was the guest speaker at the pinning ceremony hosted by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) (SS/SW) Rick D. West. Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Ingrid Cortez, U.S. Fleet Forces Sea Sailor of the Year; Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Shalanda Brewer, Navy Reserve Sailor of the Year; Operations Specialist 1st Class Samira McBride, U.S. Pacific Fleet Sea Sailor of the Year and Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Cassandra Foote, Chief of Naval Operations Shore Sailor of the Year were each presented their chief petty officer appointment letter from the CNO prior to having their anchors pinned to their collars and combination covers placed on their heads. “What I like most about this program is that these four Sailors know the Navy appreciates their dedication and performance, and expects even more of them in the future,” said Roughead. “Their advancement today is an affirmation of the potential the Navy sees in them as future Chief Petty Officers and senior enlisted leaders at their next commands.” Before the anchors were pinned on the Sailors of the Year, West spoke about the great honor of earning the title of “Chief” and the privilege of leading Sailors while wearing the chief anchors on their collars.

“This is a great day for our Navy, and today we are making history with all for Sailors of the Year being women. These Sailors have proven themselves as professional Sailors, experts in their rates, role models to our junior Sailors and youth, and most importantly, true leaders,” said West. Families, friends and shipmates traveled from around the world to attend the ceremony to share the highlights of their accomplishments and achievement on making chief petty officer. “A lot is expected of us, and it’s a greater responsibility, but we are going to lead our Sailors and keep doing what we’ve been doing,” said Cortez after the advancement ceremony. “This was such an awesome experience. I feel like I’m on top of the world, and it’s just incredible.” The Sailors of the Year and their families toured the White House, visited historical sites around D.C., meet with residents at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, and attended special events held in their honor throughout the week before their advancement ceremony. The Sailor of the Year program was established in 1972 by the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize an individual Sailor who best represented the ever-growing group of dedicated professional Sailors at each command and ultimately the Navy. When the program began, only the Atlantic and Pacific Fleet Sailors were recognized. Within ten years, the Sailor of the Year program was expanded to include the shore establishment and Navy Reserve Sailors.

Sailors and Marines participate in Whaling Days Parade

BUPERS uses new system for message delivery By Wm. Cullen James, Navy Personnel Command Public Affairs

The Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) and Navy Personnel Command (NPC) announced they will transition to a new message system beginning in August. According to NAVADMIN 249/10, all unclassified message traffic from BUPERS and NPC, including permanent change of station orders, will be sent via command e-mail through the Official Information Exchange (OIX). This change is a result of Navy ending support for the Defense Messaging System (DMS). “This process should be transparent for the Sailors in the Fleet,” said Capt. Brian Wenger, NPC assistant commander for Business Operations and Comptroller. “The important thing is for commands to set up their command e-mail in the OIX system,” as outlined in the NAVADMIN. To create as transparent a change as possible, BUPERS is fielding a new system called Government Official Information Exchange System (GOES). The internal system will act as a router for all BUPERS official information into

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (AW) Maebel Tinoko

OIX. All commands that have set up command e-mail with OIX will receive message traffic from GOES. “Our intent was to develop a solution that would have the least impact on the business rules for both those generating messages and the commands receiving them,” said Wenger. GOES also supports Sailors stationed in non-Navy billets such as those in Individual Augmentee assignments. As the Navy transitions to OIX, assistance is available to commands to minimize impact to their receipt of message traffic. “If for any reason a command cannot access OIX, we can set them up on GOES and they can retrieve their orders and messages that way,” said William Davis Jr., BUPERS/NPC Messaging program manager.

Sailors and Marines stationed at commands around Kitsap County participated in the 38th annual Whaling Days summer parade in Silverdale, Wash., July 24. Festivities included a “Whale of a Run” four-mile race, Dandy Lions Grand Parade, performances from local entertainers, the Great Kitsap Duck Race and much more. Service members teamed up with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4992 and displayed the banners of fallen service members from Washington State. Some Sailors marched with the Bremerton Submarine Veterans association to show their community support. “These banners of fallen troops mean so much to the families who lost a loved one, and it means so much more when service members are out there carrying these banners,” said Alice Dandeneau, president of VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Henry Bryner Post 4992. “It is important to show the community the price of freedom, and I would like to thank all the

Sailors, Marines and Soldiers who came out to support us with this event.” Whaling Days is a not-for-profit festival run by volunteers. The proceeds collected each year are donated to the local community through charitable contributions and scholarships. “I love being part of this parade, and it’s important to show our support to the community and honor those who have passed,” said Electrician’s Mate 1st Class (SS) Joseph Shaffner, USS Seawolf (SSN 21) electrical division leading petty officer. “I’ve been working closely with the Bremerton Sub vets for a while now, and it’s an honor to meet the veterans and hear their stories about history and what the Navy was like back then,” said Electronics Technician 1st Class (SS) Rocky Park, USS Nevada (SSBN733) (Blue). “The parade is a great opportunity to show the community we respect them and the crowds are always warm and welcoming.”

2010 Acura ZDC Advance Base Price: $56,045 Price as Tested: $56,855 This issue, we’re driving Acura’s new 2010 ZDX, a design-tweaked SUV that is built on the popular MDX chassis. The distinguishing factor is ZDX’s car like body design, which attracted a lot of positive attention everywhere we took it. Unlike its sibling MDX, the new ZDX can’t handle three rows of seating, and that’s the way Acura wants it. I’m of the opinion that Acura is attracting the same SUV consumer base that MDX appeals to, yet does so while creating a new “ZDX Car Like” niche. Acura hopes that a portion of today’s “green buying” public no longer wants an SUV moniker tied to their purchase, thus fulfilling this expected consumer need. Call it what you want, even if the mechanicals are the same and ground clearance between the two models are nearly identical, with ZDX at 7.9 inches and MDX a bit higher at 8.2. As for features, ZDX has it all. On several long trips during our week long test, my passengers and I were able to test the high-end Technology Package, which adds Acura’s top notch navigation system with real-voice recognition, dash display rear camera, real time traffic and weather. An impressive collision mitigation braking system (CMBS) and adaptive cruise control allows the driver an electronic “co-pilot” that assists in everyday driving. Specifically, a front grille radar signal is constantly transmitted, and the return signal is evaluated and determines the distance and closing speed to vehicles that lie directly ahead. So, if you are traveling behind a car and the collision system is activated, the ZDX will automatically brake and keep a safe distance from you and the car in front. Even if you set the cruise to 65-mph, the system slows the ZDX and keeps a safe distance between you and the car in front, which may be going, say, 40-mph. I grew to really love this feature, as it

is a true safety enhancement. When the system senses that a frontal collision is unavoidable, the front seat belts tighten, and strong braking is automatically applied to help reduce the impact velocity and collision force. The goal of the CMBS system is to alert the driver to apply the brakes. It is not alone expected to brake the vehicle sufficiently to avoid a collision. Your Honda/Acura dealer will tell you more and show you first hand how it works. All ZDX’s come XM Satellite, 19-inch tires and wheels, panoramic sunroof, nice ambient cabin lighting, rearview mirror back-up camera (ours had the full display from the Navigation screen), dual-zone climate control, heated eightway power front seats, leather trim, power lift gate, Bluetooth, an 8-speaker stereo and 6-CD changer, and much more. Additionally, our tester had no options, just $810 for delivery as our top line Advance model’s base price carries all of the futuristic features and comforts. Inside, ZDX truly delivers Acura’s theory on sporty opulence. The instrumentation is appealing, the 10-speaker DVD Dolby/DTS is great and the blind spot electronic and visual

side impact door beams and daytime running lamps are all standard. Acura ZDX handles very well, although it won’t win any sports car races. Still, with all of the electronic enhancements that help handling and emergency situations, you’ll be pleased. As for performance, expect 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds. Important numbers include a wheel base of 108.3 inches, 16 city and 23 highway EPA rating, 1,500 pounds tow capacity and 21.3 gallon fuel tank. In summary, wherever we took ZDX, from sporting event to restaurant valet parking attendant, everyone wanted to know what it was and noted how good looking it was. And yes, everyone called it a car, so perhaps Acura’s “new niche” marketing is working. Likes: High tech safety packages, looks, interior, six speed transmission, AWD. Dislikes: Tight rear quarters, cargo room, weird rear door handles. (Greg Zyla is a syndicated auto columnist).

warnings are appreciated. Seating is fine, but negatives due to ZDX’s 5-passenger car like style are cargo room and rear seat accommodations. When compared to sibling MDX, rear quarters are tight, and cargo is reduced from a maximum of 83.5 cubic feet in the MDX with rear seats down to just 57.3 cubic feet rear seat folded forward in the ZDX. But again, Acura is hoping a “green” consumer doesn’t want to compare, and the ZDX’s cargo number is more than acceptable for an automobile. Under the hood, ZDX receives motivation from Acura’s trusty 3.7-liter V6, which produces 300 horses and 270 pound-feet of torque. A fine shifting and new six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control is standard across the line, with paddle shifters on the steering wheel for more precise shifting. The power and torque are passed through a fully independent suspension and the Super Handling AllWheel Drive (SH-AWD) system found under many Acura models. As for safety, all expected airbags including side curtain, 4-wheel ABS disc brakes with brake assist, vehicle stability assist, electronic brake distribution,

The fast, race ready Holman Moody 1959 Thunderbirds Here’s a photo of the Holman Moody “zipper-top” 1959 Ford Thunderbird hardtop/convertible driven by Banjo Matthews. A dozen 1959 race ready Thunderbirds came from the Holman Moody stables in Charlotte, NC, which is still in business to this day and run by Lee Holman, son of founder John Holman. (Photo courtesy Lee Holman and Banjo Matthews)

Q: Greg, I’ve an avid “old-timer” fan of NASCAR and have followed the sport since the very first Daytona 500, and even earlier on the beach course. Do you recall the famous NASCAR Thunderbirds from back then, both hardtops and convertibles? Weren’t they available from Ford Motor Company ready to race? Thanks, and I really enjoy your columns. Bud L., Michigan.

raced to a win and a third, respectively. Weatherly would have finished one-two with Turner had Lee Petty not tangled with him on the last lap, as Petty finished second when Weatherly spun and gathered it back up for third. (This video is on YouTube by the way). Also, 1958 is the year Ford officially gave its official stamp of approval and full factory support to the team, and that’s where you remember (as I do) seeing ads for those Holman Moody race ready 1959 Thunderbirds. This corporate backing found Holman Moody building what Lee Holman remembers as a “dozen or so” 1959 Thunderbirds, all having the capacity of removing the top to compete in the convertible races and called “zipper tops.” With five of seven Thunderbirds in the 1959 built by Holman Moody, that 1959 Daytona 500 is still talked about to this day, with Beauchamp and Petty averaging 135.521 mph for the entire 500 miles! Banjo Matthews, another NASCAR legend builder and driver, drove a Holman Moody “zipper top” Thunderbird in 1959 also. In summary, of all the cars produced, Thunderbirds were indeed special, and I believe all those older T-Birds form the 1950s are great vehicles to own, be it a nostalgia racecar or a collector car. And, although the 1955-1957 Thunderbirds bring the most bucks, there’s nothing like those 1959 NASCAR Thunderbirds for a great look back at Ford’s history. Give Lee Holman a call at 704-5832888 for info on ordering of anything from a full size, real racecar to an official Holman Moody nostalgia style t-shirt, all visible on their website at www. holmanmoody.com. Yes, they are still in business at 9119 Forsyth Pike Drive, PO Box 669351, Charlotte, NC 28266 And thanks again Lee Holman for your assistance. (Greg Zyla welcomes reader inquiries on anything to do with cars or racing, email him at extramile_2000@ yahoo.com).

A: Bud, those 1959 race ready Thunderbirds you speak of were indeed available, but not directly from the Ford company dealers. The legendary team of Holman Moody was the pioneers for building the first race team Fords for the Ford Motor Company, and build them well they did. I’m sure you remember that first Daytona 500, where Johnny Beauchamp, in one of the Holman Moody Thunderbirds, nearly won the race against Richard Petty in his Oldsmobile? As you recall, the finish in 1959 at Daytona was a dead heat, and it took three days for Petty to be declared the winner after Beauchamp was originally named the winner and experienced all the victory lane laurels. I contacted Lee Holman, son of the great founder, for this answer to make sure we get everything right. Thus, the story of Holman and Moody starts earlier as in 1957, John Holman and Ralph Moody put their heads together and formed the soon to be famous Ford race car building company, Holman Moody, at the Charlotte Airport business complex. With Ford’s blessing, but not yet full factory support, it saw Holman Moody full size Fords win its first races in 1957. By 1958, those beautiful Thunderbirds were on the building jig in prototype form as a 1958 model, but still a year away from the track. However, the full size Holman Moody 1958 Fords were entered in the last convertible race on the Daytona Beach Course, where good friends Curtis Turner and Joe Weatherly For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

Player survey: Most overrated MLB players One hundred and eighty-seven major league players were surveyed to answer the question: who is the most overrated player in baseball? Keep in mind that when determining whether a player is overrated or not, evaluation is not the sole factor; public opinion also needs to be weighed in. As determined by the players, here are the top five with some analysis: the all-star game. Is he more deserving than Paul Konerko or Kevin Youkilis? No, but the popularity of playing in New York won him a trip to Anaheim, a prime player not living up to his contract. He does not get much attention anymore,

4) J.D. Drew, 3% I must say I was surprised to see Drew in the top five. From a production stand-point, Drew has been a very productive player for some time now, putting up an all-star-quality 5.6 WAR last season. Furthermore, it is not as though J.D. Drew gets loads of attention from the fans. He has had just one all-star selection in his career, despite the fact that he has been deserving of the award many times in the past. So, in the end, I can’t pinpoint exactly why players would vote Drew onto this list among all other possibilities. Could it be the fact that he misses a lot of time due to injury? Could it be that he makes $14 million a year? Could it be that he is on the Red Sox?

3) Nick Swisher, 4% I’ll make this simple: I couldn’t agree more. Just take his recent selection to

This has been going on forever. Yes, he is inconsistent. But the way management has handled him has been extremely detrimental in that regard. Fans, the media, and apparently players love to beat this guy up, but it is completely unnecessary and inaccurately provoked.

the whole part about playing in New York. But none of those things deny that Alex Rodriguez is one of the best players in the game. Yes, it is possible to overrate someone as good as A-Rod, but everything he has received, he has deserved. Except for all the hatred. Overall Thoughts

1) Joba Chamberlain, 12% and the $11 million is not something that represents public opinion. No, he isn’t a good player, but no one is making a case otherwise.

2) Alex Rodriguez, 5% It just seems like you can never finish bashing A-Rod. Whether it’s 500 home runs, 600 home runs, or three MVPs, it just seems as though nothing can stop the hatred for Alex Rodriguez. If I had to guess why he is on this list, I would attribute it to the massive contract, the steroid use, and of course

Interesting, interesting, interesting. In a land-slide, Joba wins. If you ask me, the players are apparently reading too many New York newspapers. It’s not hard to decipher what is going on with Joba — and with what has gone on for the past two years. New York was ready to smash in some windows a few nights ago when Chamberlain gave up a grand slam against the Mariners in the eighth inning, giving up the lead. Fans were screaming, asking why this guy is still allowed to pitch. But what went right through their thoughts was the fact that he had a 2.25 ERA in the eight appearances before that.

Look back at all of these players and try to find one thing they all have in common. Not too surprisingly, they all play — or have recently played — for a New York team or a Boston team. It’s a shame that so many questions will surround you if the spot light is simply shined on you. Regardless, the most important thing to take away from this survey is that these are not the only players that receive — or don’t receive — the improper amount of attention. Simply playing for a big market team will change how people look at you, but it doesn’t change your value or your ability to win.

The media coverage and reaction that has surfaced regarding LeBron James’ move to Miami, “The Decision” television special, and ESPN’s handling of the situation has as ESPN might explain “been the greatest single media, sports, and entertainment story” in the history of mankind. Criticism has been that LeBron has damaged his brand, ESPN has tarnished its image, and that the show was bad idea from the outset. But do ESPN and LeBron James deserve all of the criticism or was ESPN delivering on expectations and did LeBron simply take control of the situation? Should critics be upset with LeBron or did LeBron simply turn the tables? LeBron’s every move for two years became headlines and people endlessly talked about his next team. Any word or reaction he had to a question received exhaustive coverage. His words, expressions, or laughter became the day’s top story and the media reported all of it with bated breath. Speculation was rampant about his next team. If LeBron wore a Yankees hat, it was proclaimed he would be a Knick. LeBron likes Jay-Z and his music, so surely he will be a Net. LeBron built a house in Ohio, so Cleveland is the place. LeBron grew up liking Michael Jordan, so Chicago will be his destination. LeBron wants to shine in the bright lights of Los Angeles like Kobe Bryant, so he must play for the Clippers. LeBron may or may not have had lunch with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, so Miami will be his choice. If LeBron wanted to win, he must go to Chicago, if he wanted to be a global icon, he needed to move to New York, if LeBron wanted to be loyal, then he must choose Ohio. LeBron’s off-the-court activities often received more attention than his basketball skills as rumors swirled about where free agency would take him. He kept many of his current media critics in business as they had something to talk and write about. Suddenly, when LeBron took control of the situation and dictated terms of his announcement, the media struck a sour note because they had lost control. They had lost the ability to present LeBron and his actions in a way that benefited them. How dare LeBron not call a press conference or present his information

in front of an “objective” journalist who could ask whatever questions he or she wanted. No longer were media outlets in the business of speculating about LeBron with countless minutes devoted to his every move. Each member of the media was denied the chance to grill him about his decision because a press conference wasn’t used. Their opportunity at the spotlight had been denied. The media had been using LeBron’s every action to cast a light on themselves with rampant speculation and commentary. The media is now calling him selfish, egotistical, and only caring about selfpromotion. But how many media outlets used his every move to bolster their reputation as investigative reporters or journalists as they commented on how he reacted to his reception at Madison Square Garden or where he spent his time in the offseason? There is no longer purity in sports journalism. Some of the outcry has been that LeBron and ESPN have suddenly damaged the purity of sports journalism. Newsflash: the purity of sports journalism has been long gone. It is hard to believe that the same journalists who were giving in-depth reports about LeBron’s Yankee hat and therefore his imminent choice of being a Knickerbocker believe there was some kind of purity in sports journalism in 2010. Sports reporting jumped the shark a long time ago. For years, ESPN has been explaining to its viewership and the rest of the sports media that sports and entertainment have merged. Vince McMahon and the WWE may have started the model with Hulkamania, but ESPN has perfected it with “The Decision.” The build-up of the merger of sports and entertainment has included, but is not limited to: “Playmakers,” “The ESPYs,” “Pros vs. Joes,” the NFL’s opening weekend concerts, and all of the top 40 music played under highlights. ESPN brought the world the biggest sports and entertainment story in a format that combined the best and worst of sports and entertainment. Essentially, they delivered on their promise and outrage about it is years too late. If viewers and the media didn’t like the result, then they have been insanely blind to the past several years of sports

television programming. ESPN has been telling the viewing public for years that sports and entertainment have merged and they were leading the way. People who are purists and who want sports without the entertainment are called “old-fashioned” and out of touch with reality. But suddenly, after “The Decision,” being a purist it seems is back in fashion. For those who were disappointed, they should revaluate the phrase “combining sports and entertainment.” Of course the real question is, “where have you been for the last 10 years?” Giving leagues and stars controlled

environments and presenting them as entertainment is nothing new to ESPN and sports journalism in general. Did LeBron go too far in creating “The Decision?” A different perspective might be that he is the first professional athlete to take control of the situation. LeBron negotiated the terms of his announcement and ESPN acquiesced. ESPN wanted the story. When an entertainer, newsmaker, or politician breaks news, it is often in a controlled environment with their choice of interviewer. Yes, LeBron had control of the ad inventory and where the proceeds

went. The proceeds went to charity. LeBron is not only guilty of wanting to control where and how he made an announcement, he is guilty of forcing a company to give money to a charity. Two crimes that when compared to the acts of other athletes don’t seem to be too bad. As for making an entire television show about his decision, there are countless media outlets dedicated to the decisions of high school prep stars choosing college schools. ESPN currently dedicates days of coverage to high school athletes picking up hats and making decisions on national signing days. The NBA, the fans, and the media created LeBron and it is time to reap what you sow. The NBA has embarked on a strategy since Larry Bird and Magic Johnson to emphasize stars. The league eras have been marked by names and not teams. LeBron didn’t hijack the league, the league created a system, nurtured LeBron, and he is the first star to take full advantage of it. Nike and the Cleveland Cavaliers told us to “Witness” LeBron and told us to endorse him as King James. Just about everyone did and now that LeBron has had made us witness his decision on

his terms, people want to dethrone their chosen king. He fulfilled his contract in Cleveland and he has now decided to go elsewhere. Since high school, LeBron has been told he is the next era of basketball by the NBA, by sponsors, and by fans. He was given the keys to the NBA and global sports kingdom a long time ago. As one of the premier sports icons of the world, yes, he may have taken a few liberties on July 8, but for over seven years, the media, city of Cleveland, NBA, and fans put him in this position. In the end, he took control of the situation and with all he has been told and given over the years he ultimately did it his way. ESPN made the decision to air “The Decision” because LeBron and his team negotiated terms that were agreeable to both sides. The structure of the show adhered to the promises and expectations ESPN gave its viewing public and the direction of sports and journalism have been headed. Entertainment and sports have officially merged and soon “The Decision” will look like serious investigative journalism compared to what will be done by ESPN, other athletes, and other media outlets.

Last shot for Chris Arreola The harsh reality of sweet science is that a pugilist can not get to the top on talent alone. It has been proven time and time again ever since the bare knuckle fights of 19th century. Preparation is the key to success. Even one of the best heavyweights of all time, the first black man to ever hold the coveted heavyweight crown, Jack Johnson lost his title to an inferior, but stronger and better prepared opponent, Jess Willard. This harsh reality could not ring truer for once very promising Mexican heavyweight prospect, Cristobal Arreola. Ever since turning professional in 2003, Arreola terrorized opponents with power in both hands and solid boxing skills from amateur days, thus earning a nickname Nightmare. In fact out of first twenty six opponents only one has heard the final bell standing up right, two were disqualified on the way to being stopped and all the rest were stopped cold. Well known in Southern California boxing circles, Arreola gained national recognition when he stopped a well schooled, previously unbeaten heavyweight Damian Willis in Las Vegas in 2006 on the under-card of huge Pay- per View show that featured Floyd Mayweather Jr. With his all out assault style of fighting inside the squared circle and easygoing, the boy next door personality

outside, charismatic Arreola gained fans rapidly, as if he was already a champion. With popularity grew his weight in the ring. Arreola came in great shape for his HBO televised fight with another unbeaten prospect, Chazz Witherspoon in June of 2008. Southern California favorite heavyweight came in weighing in at 239-pounds and annihilated Witherspoon within three rounds. That was the last time we saw Chris Arreola in shape. Much has been made by the media and pundits about Arreola’s weight issues and less than stellar work habits, but good natured Mexican heavyweight took all the digs in stride and made fun of his eating habits. “Honestly, the hard part for me is,” said Arreola during a telephone conference designed to promote his upcoming fight with fellow Mexican heavyweight, Manuel Quesada:” When it comes late at night after I get home from a hard day at the gym, there’s no point in me working out if I’m going to go home and then have a big-ass burger.” Arreola’s fans and supporters cringed when he came out only three months later for his next fight against Israel Garcia weighing at 259 pounds, twenty pounds heavier than his previous fight. But as long as Arreola kept winning his lack of conditioning and discipline would remain the subject for media pontification. “I don’t want to

talk about my weight, “Arreola would say addressing journalists prior to a fight: “I am not training to loose weight. I am training to go twelve hard rounds in the ring.” But they say when there is the smoke there is fire. Arreola’s questionable work ethics and problem with food were obvious to most around him. Despite a flabby physique and poor preparation, Arreola became a fixture on HBO because of his seek and destroy attitude in the ring and charisma he displayed during interviews. With HBO and fans behind him one hundred percent and seemingly on top of the world, Cristobal Arreola got a long awaited call to fight Vitali Klitschko for the biggest prize in boxing, a heavyweight championship in September of 2009 at home in Los Angeles. There would be no more excuses. Chris has hired strength and conditioning Coach Darryl Hudson to help him to get ready for the fight and promised the media to come in the best shape of his life. However, on the day of the weigh in he fell short of the goal and made a joke out of it. Arreola originally weighed at 270 pounds, hiding a weight belt under his t shirt, and then he took the belt and the t shirt off and weighed at 251, still about ten pounds short of his intended mark. Arreola cried like a baby without food, when his trainer and friend Henry Ramirez mercifully stopped the beating that he was taking in the ring the next night at the hands of the champion, Klitschko.” I wanted it so bad,” said Arreola whipping off the tears. Or maybe he cried because he knew that he missed the biggest opportunity of his life, and because he could have gotten in much better shape and given himself a much better chance. Several weeks prior to the fight I came to see Arreola spar at Joe Goossen’s gym in Van Nuys and I waited for two hours and Chris never showed up. How many sparring sessions did Chris miss? This year in April Arreola got another shot at big times facing undersized Tomasz Adamek in a title eliminator. This time according to people in his camp he missed more than a few training sessions. As a result he lost again in a fight that was surely his to win. “Especially the fight with Adamek,”

said Arreola:”I really shot myself in the foot. I cut some corners. Actually, I cut a lot of corners.” “It’s just – I just hate looking back at some fights and knowing that I should have, could have, would have, but I didn’t,” said Arreola:” And now it’s time for me to come in there and just put a statement. I know what I have to do to win. And the only person (I can beat) is myself, and I’ve done that (two times already), and I’m tired of beating myself.” This time demoted to boxing on ESPN’S Friday Night Fights Arreola will be facing Manuel Quezada on August 13th, 2010 at the Citizen’s Business Bank Arena, a place where he got out boxed by Adamek back in April. Both, Chris Arreola (28-2,25KO) and Manuel Quezada (29-5,18KO) lost their last bouts and both have to make a statement to remain relevant in the division. “But, you know, this fight, it is – it is a make-me-or-break-me kind of fight,” exclaimed Chris: It’s for both of us, you know? This is – this is our opportunity to showcase ourselves. And that hunger just came back. It’s back, man. I’m hungry. I want to win. I hate losing And I think I have a lot to prove, not only to myself, but to the fans and to everybody that doesn’t believe in me and stuff like that or anybody that doubts me. You know, I just have to prove everybody wrong . I’ve got to prove it to myself that I am the fighter that I believe I am, that I – that I can become a world champion. I have – I have a lot to prove.”

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

New look Chargers aiming high as training camp opens For the first time in nearly a decade, the San Diego Chargers will start a season without two of their biggest stars on both sides of the ball. After nine iconic seasons with the Bolts, LaDanian Tomlinson is now playing for the NY Jets. Jamal Williams, one of two holdovers from the Bobby Beathard era (David Binn being the other) is with the Denver Broncos. In fact, a total of seven pro bowl players are gone from a Chargers squad that was regarded as one of the most talented teams in the league over the past five years. As if that alone doesn’t have Chargers fans concerned, two other pro bowlers – Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill -- are threatening to sit out until week 10 because of contract disputes. Luckily for the Chargers they play in the AFC West – a division in which they should win their fifth consecutive title. However, another title and playoff appearance is not good enough for a Chargers team that ranks third in the NFL with 67 regular-season victories since 2004. Having blown their divisional playoff game at home in a 17-14 loss to the Jets last January, many regard this season as Super Bowl or bust. As they prepare for their seasonopening Monday Night game at Kansas City, here is a look at your 2010 San Diego Chargers. Offense

all gaining valuable playing time last season, the interior line will be a definite strength on the team. If free agent LT Tra Thomas and RT Jeromy Clary can keep Rivers upright the entire season, look for a drastic improvement in the offensive numbers once Mathews gets the running game going. Defense Despite the loss of Williams, the Chargers defense should vastly improve in defensive coordinator Ron Rivera’s second year at the helm. Without the injured Williams last season, they ranked 11th in points allowed and jumped to 11th against the pass after finishing 31st versus the pass in ’08 under Rivera’s aggressive 3-4 scheme. Defensive ends Luis Castillo and Jacques Cesaire will get some muchneeded push with the return of Ryon Bingham who missed all of ’09 with a torn triceps. Travis Johnson, Alfonso Boone and Vaughn Martin provide valuable depth and fresh legs in the defensive rotation. The Chargers liked what they saw last year in NT Ogembi Nagbuo and rookie fifth-round pick Cam Thomas could be one of the steals of the draft if he contributes as expected. The key to the defense will be Shawne Merriman. If he can return to the Merriman of pre-knee surgeries – 39.5 sacks in his first three seasons – the defense will be one of the league’s elite. With Merriman, Shaun Phillips and Larry English (1st rnd pick in ’09), the team is set on the outside with plenty of depth in Antwan Applewhite and Jyles Tucker. A talented group of inside ‘backers -- Stephen Cooper, Brandon Siler, Kevin Burnett and rookie third-round pick Donald Butler -- will be challenged now that Williams won’t being taking on the double and tripleteam blocking schemes from the nose tackle position. In the secondary, FS Eric Weddle returns and CB Quentin Jammer remains one of the best, albeit underrated, players in the league. Cornerback Antoine Cason (1st rnd ’08) and fourthround rookie SS Darrell Stuckey are the front- runners to replace Antonio Cromartie (trade) and Kevin Ellison (released), respectively. Veteran free agents Nathan Vasher and Donald Strickland will battle Brandon Hughes and Dante Hughes for the backup cornerback spots while Steve Gregory, Paul Oliver and C.J. Spillman add much needed depth and talent at the two safety positions.

It took the Colts seven trips to the playoffs behind future Hall of Fame players Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison before they reached the Prediction Super Bowl and beat the Chicago Bears in 2006. Led by quarterback Philip Rivers (4,254 yds; 28 tds; 9 int.), the Chargers offense has unleashed an aerial attack that hasn’t been seen around town since the days of Air Coryell. With an arsenal of Antonio Gates, Darren Sproles, Malcolm Floyd, Legedu Naanee, Buster Davis and free agent veteran Josh Reed, the Chargers should remain amongst the league’s best on offense even if Jackson sits out. The key to the offense will be rookie running back Ryan Mathews. Finishing the season ranked 31st in rushing, the Chargers moved up 16 spots in the first round to nab Mathews as Tomlinson’s successor. The combination a Mathews and Sproles in both the running and passing schemes out of the backfield should free up Gates by diverting defenses from focusing solely on the perennial All-Pro tight end. After struggling through an injuryriddled start of the ’09 season, the offensive line stepped-up and helped the team reel off 11 consecutive wins – finishing fourth in scoring and fifth in passing yards. Anchored by center Special Teams Nick Hardwick and Pro Bowl LG Kris Dielman, the O-Line enters the ’10 Despite his collapse in the playoffs, season with a big chip on their shoulders Nate Kaeding still remains one of the following what they felt were some elite place kickers in the NFL – as are unflattering remarks by the departed his teammates P Mike Scifres and LS Tomlinson. “ANGELINA JOLIE comes across as such an unearthly mix of striking beauty and a----kicking aggression that few would believe she could ever be just one of the parts of a love triangle...” That’s Jay A. Fernandez in the Hollywood Reporter, musing on the strange appeal of Miss Jolie, the heroine of “Salt” -- an action movie originally written for Tom Cruise. (I guess Fernandez forgot she was once part of a love triangle -- the Woman Who Stole Brad From Jen.) Later in this piece, film historian David Thompson chimes in: “She’s too strong, she’s too forceful. And that’s not just her screen character. It’s her public character too. She’s not got that availability for romance. She isn’t really sentimentally appealing. She needs to be doing strong things -- crazy things, sometimes -- to work onscreen.” Verrry interesting! I’d say Miss Jolie, who is beautiful but not that sexy, is following in the footsteps of such tough screen icons as Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford. Except ... both Stanwyck and Crawford were soft and yielding in their youth; they toughened up as they matured into their late 30s and 40s. It was the only way to survive on screen -- kill the woman, embrace the virago. But Jolie has been “kick a--” right from the start. (Even as an out-of-control model in “Gia” or as a pathological case in “Girl, Interrupted,” there hasn’t been a lot of vulnerability. But, Lord -- is she strong!) And she doesn’t have to play embittered older women, riding horseback or riding roughshod over their men -- pathological, menopausal Medusas. Jolie can pick up a lethal weapon and wipe out the men without a backward glance. One senses her screen characters do not need a man waiting as the screen fades to black. The writer declares, “As Hollywood’s lone female action star, Jolie’s an anomaly and has a shelf life.” Well, she is only 35. I think her shelf is safe for a while. She’ll never be a sweptaway romantic heroine, but at 45, she will probably still be convincingly kicking a--, if she wants to. And she has Brad Pitt and their children to keep her busy. Movies don’t have to be this remarkable woman’s life. It’s a nice job. Period. AS FOR “Salt” it couldn’t beat Leonardo DiCaprio’s dream-thriller “Inception,” but it still came in second with a nifty $36 million for the weekend. It’s exactly what the studio expected, and they also expect Miss Jolie to have “legs” in Variety-speak. I saw “Salt” over the weekend. I can’t say it is terribly original, but the mere presence of this actress invigorates plotlines gone stale 30 years ago. Don’t go expecting anything to make sense, especially the whippet slender Angelina “kicking a--” like, well, the guy the

script was originally intended for -- Tom Cruise. Jolie attended the film’s premiere in Moscow over the weekend. She wore a blazing red halter-neck gown and proudly displayed her sinewy arms and tattoos. She could put on a pound or 10, but looked spectacular. WHO KNOWS what to believe when InTouch magazine blasts out its weekly scoops? But I like these two stories, and hope there’s a kernel of veracity. Both items concern troubled stars -- Mel Gibson and Lindsay Lohan. According to InTouch, the only celeb who will speak to Gibson is Britney Spears. Apparently, Gibson gave the pop princess some encouraging support when Britney was flipping out a couple years ago. She feels she should return the favor. Sweet, no matter what one feels about Mr. G. And Lindsay? Among those who are giving a thumb’s up to the now-jailed star, is country legend Willie Nelson. Sources for this story insist Nelson -who is a genuine sweetheart of a man -- has “called Lindsay every day” since her sentencing. And, if she wants it, Willie will provide a movie role for her, in the film he’s producing, “The Dry Gulch Kid.” Look, it doesn’t sound like Oscar bait, but I feel it has to be better than her plan to do the Linda Lovelace story. Perhaps if Lindsay’s own reputation hadn’t disintegrated so disastrously, it might be a gritty and brave endeavor. Now? Just a lurid joke. Better that Lindsay should stick to her fledging fashion career than enacting Miss Lovelace’s sordid tale of abuse and pornography. Anyway, I like Lindsay and wish her luck. Personally, I thought the mug shot was amazing. Why shouldn’t she smile? She’s an actress! Do your time, do your rehab, get your career back. Therapy wouldn’t hurt. (And that means you, too, Dina and Michael Lohan.)

ESSENTIAL READING I MP

Excerpt from “Point of Aim, Point of Impact” by Jay Taylor (Copyright © 2009 by Jay L. Taylor)

8. First Kill During the first few weeks I was partnered up with Sgt Webb he had taken a couple of shots at a few VC we had spotted while we were out on patrol. I spotted for him, and I know he hit at least one of them. We were all very good shots, but we all missed our fair share of the time. The best chance we normally had of hitting the enemy was when he was stopped and presented a still target. After the first shot we would be shooting at moving targets, which are very difficult to hit at long range. They never seemed to run directly away from us, which would have made them slightly easier targets. A man weaving in and out of the brush at 700 yards is a very difficult target to hit—I don’t care how good of a shot you think you are. One day while on patrol with a squad from Charlie Company in the foothills near Charlie Ridge, Webb and I separated from the squad to find a hide from where we could watch the adjacent ridge. We planned to stay there until later in the day when the squad came back to pick us up. We had been in our hide for an hour when Webb spotted some VC on the ridge across from us, 650 yards out. He handed the 700 to me and said, “Here, you take this one.” I was surprised. I had not expected this. I had not been in the field very long, and to get a chance to take my first shot at the enemy with the 700 this soon was not the norm. I wanted my first kill, or at least I thought I did. The desire to get my first kill had started from the minute I volunteered for the snipers and the desire had steadily grown stronger. All of my training and mental conditioning, or brainwashing, was in preparation for this. From the first day I had seen the sign in front of the sniper tent with the kill tally on it, my desire to get my first kill had intensified. I could tell from being around the other snipers in the platoon who had kills that it was a private club and there was only one way in. Place

the crosshairs of a nine-power scope on a man, squeeze the trigger, and know your bullet was the one that killed him. I quickly got into position and located the VC in the rifle scope. At least ten of them were walking up the ridge in single file, coming in and out of view as they weaved through the thick vegetation. Due to the thick vegetation there was only one spot at the crest of the ridge where when they passed through it I could get a clean shot. They were visible from the waist up for only a brief moment. As I watched, I couldn’t believe my luck. The column stopped and one of them was standing right in the opening. Webb was watching through the binoculars and whispered, “Hold a little high. They are at least 700 yards out.” There was no wind. I put the crosshairs on the man’s head and then raised the center of the crosshairs a foot and a half above his head and squeezed the trigger. I was trying for a body shot. I was not prepared for what happened next—I had thought I was but I wasn’t. I was in a good prone shooting position, so the recoil of the rifle did not knock me off of the sight picture. My shot was high, or he was closer than the 700 yards we had estimated and I watched as the bullet struck his head. At that distance with a nine-power scope I could see the impact of the bullet—his head distorted out of shape and snapped sideways as if something was trying to rip it off his shoulders, and he dropped out of sight instantly. It was like slow motion and yet it happened in the blink of an eye. That picture is as clear in my mind today as it was forty years ago. Webb said, “You nailed the bastard.” Instinctively I was immediately searching for another shot at one of his comrades, but they were

all down and out of sight. Sgt. Webb also glassed for another opportunity but there were none. The body was hidden from our view by the brush, so even if we could get the platoon commander to our position we would not be able to get a confirmed kill without being able to see the body, and there was no way we were going to attempt to reach the kill site from where we were. After a few more minutes of glassing, Sgt Webb said, “Let’s get the hell out of here in case they come after us,” so we left and saw no more action the rest of the day. The weight of what I had just done hit me like a ton of bricks. It was a tremendous letdown—I didn’t feel the joy or pride I had thought I would at killing my first man. At the same time I felt very little remorse about what I had just done. However, I did realize I had just broken the worst taboo possible— “Thou shalt not kill.” How would I be able to justify what I had done when my time came? I had just killed a man who was merely standing there waiting for the man in front of him to move. I knew then I could never go back—I could never bring the man I had just killed back to life. I had not yet managed to completely dehumanize these people, and for that reason alone I had mixed feelings about what I had done. It would take a while longer before I no longer looked at these people as humans, and could justify what I was doing by rationalizing that each time I killed one of them, I might be saving one of our lives. “What greater sin, can one man inflict on another, than the taking of his life, and how will I be judged when my time comes?” Most of the Vietnam veterans who returned home brought their demons

home with them, and in spite of the fact that often their homecoming was not a pleasant one; they managed to fit back into society. “85 percent of Vietnam veterans made a successful transition to civilian life. Vietnam veterans’ personal income exceeds that of our non-veteran age group by more than 18 percent. Vietnam veterans have a lower unemployment rate than our non-vet age group. 87 percent of the American people hold Vietnam vets in high esteem.” Jay Taylor spent thirteen months in Vietnam as one of the elite members of the 7th Marine Scout Sniper Platoon Bravo Company. He spent the following forty years reliving the nightmare of his experience, and learning to cope with the painful reality of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Today, Taylor has found peace as a thoroughbred racehorse breeder in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and as the author of the book Point of Aim Point of Impact. Point of Aim, Point of Impact, is Taylor’s recollection of his Vietnam experience, that attempts to deal with the real issues returning war veterans have faced from Vietnam to the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Taylor’s personal and timely story will resonate with all current veterans and their families.

The work starts when the job search begins

A record number of people are looking for work these days. If you’re not one of them, chances are you know someone who is. An Employment Situation Summary, issued June 4 by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, reported 15 million people were unemployed in May. That’s a 9.7 percent national unemployment rate, which has changed little since the beginning of 2010. These frustrating economic conditions make it easy to get discouraged. For anyone feeling stalled in their job search, a few simple steps could put the wind back in their sails. Chasity Trzop, director of Career

Services at Brown Mackie College - Louisville, supports and guides graduates through their search for employment. “When I talk with students who are discouraged, the first question I ask is, ‘What are you doing?’ Nine times out of 10 they’re on the computer,” says Trzop. While the computer can be instrumental, a good job search utilizes additional tactics. “The computer is a passive job search. You are one of a thousand online, with about a 10 percent chance of getting an interview if you have done nothing face-to-face with the company. You must get out and interact with people,” Trzop says. Treat a job search like a job. Trzop reminds graduates that searching for a job is a job, and should be treated as such. A good rule of thumb is to do 10 things each day in support of your job search. “Five of those things can be done online, like finding and applying for jobs, and writing e-mails to strengthen your career network. The other five things should be personal contact with people who may be able to help. Get up and meet with people face to face,” says Trzop.

Join professional associations. Students at Brown Mackie College - Louisville learn early during their academic program the importance of building a professional network. They are encouraged to join student clubs and professional associations in support of their major. The affiliations are helpful in securing an externship, and indispensable when searching for employment. Attending association functions puts you in front of people who may be hiring. “No one knows how wonderful you are if you’re hiding behind your computer,” Trzop says. “Go to events, and carry your resume with you.” Volunteer to apprentice without pay. Volunteering to work without pay can go a long way toward finding a job. “Offer your service to someone in the field you want to enter. Ask if you can shadow him or her for a few days,” Trzop recommends. “Who wouldn’t want free labor? It’s no skin off your nose if they say no.” Trzop has seen many students gain on-the-job experience this way. Several proved to be so useful that the company created jobs for them. Volunteer for community service. Make productive use of your time. “Volunteer for any type of community service that interests you,” Trzop says. It provides numerous benefits. It gets

you out of the house and introduces you to new people. “You never know when you’ll meet someone who may be hiring. The experience also looks great on a resume, and can fill gaps in employment,” she says. Use the phone to your best advantage. Trzop tells graduates to keep in touch. After meeting people in the industry, call them to solidify the relationship. Ask for information on which companies may be hiring. “Make excuses for calling,” she says. “If your profession requires certification, call your contacts when it comes through.” Social websites aren’t just for small talk. “More and more people are turning to social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn in their search for employment,” says Trzop. “The websites make it easy to connect with others who share your interests.” Brown Mackie College - Louisville has even begun to use LinkedIn to find intern candidates and promote internship fairs. Now you are armed with specific knowledge on how to conduct your job search from a career service professional. “Keep a positive attitude and do the legwork that will put you out in front of people,” Trzop says. “I tell our school’s graduates, ‘School is boot camp. Now go out and be a soldier.’”

Personal branding: A new focus in job searching

q

tool to communicate core attributes, not just as a medical assistant or paralegal, but also as a human being. “For a truly effective resume, you must know who you are and what you stand for,” she says. To this end, she next asks students to develop a personal statement of philosophy. Schottelkotte shares the one she wrote for herself with students as an example to guide them in writing their own. “So many resumes out there are overblown, copied, or misrepresentative of the person applying,” she says. “Writing a personal statement of philosophy helps students crystallize who they are and how they want to be perceived by the world. It gives them a launching pad for how they can effectively and authentically market themselves.” In developing the statements, key words come up for each student as they describe themselves. When they distill their life views into five or six key words - such as integrity, enthusiasm, accountability, or reliability - students can develop a greater understanding of themselves and what drives them as a professional. “It truly helps them to focus on themselves, and personalize the content in a resume,” says Schottelkotte. “It’s not just about where you worked and what tasks you did. It’s about your range of skills, what you have accomplished, and how you accomplished it. It comes down to who you are at your core, and translates to what you bring to your work and your employer.” As students read their personal statements of philosophy aloud in class, Schottelkotte says, “There’s always hugging, and sometimes tears, as they see each other in a new light. It reminds people to be conscious of other people’s stories.” In an interview, they can weave attributes from their personal philosophy into the conversation. “The dominant interview questions are behavioral,” Schottelkotte continues. “What you’ve overcome, how you would take action in a given situation. Students get a heightened sense of confidence when they’re able to respond to interview questions in a more authentic way. They’re no longer as anxious going into an interview.” Recent college graduates and experienced professionals alike can benefit from personal branding during a job search. The discipline and soulsearching required to develop a personal statement of philosophy seems to be well worth the effort. It results in greater understanding of self and heightened authenticity in professional endeavors.

A record number of people across the nation are unemployed and looking for work. As competition among candidates grows, it becomes more and more difficult to stand out in a crowd. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Feb. 5 that 14.8 million Americans were unemployed, a number that hasn’t changed much since the beginning of 2010. This translates to an average of six people now competing for each job opening. Career development professionals are creating new strategies to help clients increase the chances of getting noticed among the throngs of job applicants vying for positions. One such professional is Martha Schottelkotte, director of career services at Brown Mackie College - Cincinnati. She guides students and graduates regularly as they create resumes and seek employment to begin new careers. Schottelkotte introduces students to the concept of personal branding. Branding is a term borrowed from marketing, where brand names are carefully managed. In marketing, a brand is an intangible collection of perceptions in the consumer’s mind about a product or service. A brand name helps to raise awareness and build trust in a crowded, competitive marketplace. Personal branding is the process of distinguishing the essence of an individual’s relevant career attributes and communicating them consistently throughout the resume and interview. “We begin work on personal branding by looking at brand icons that we all know, like the McDonald’s arches,” Schottelkotte says. “The icon represents the business and how they want to be perceived.” The same principle works for individuals. The resume becomes a personal marketing For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

CHAPPY’S ON EAGLE’S WINGS By Chaplain Ringo I MP

Why Honor & Integrity? Do you recall the Hans Christian Anderson tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”? No one bothers to tell the emperor that his new clothes are, in fact, no clothes at all. We wonder why his courtiers didn’t tell him the truth about his apparel, and we usually conclude that sometimes it might be harder to be honest than it is to be silent. However, there is an often-missed moral in the telling of this story. It is that betraying ourselves is just as wrong as withholding the truth from another person. The emperor knows all along that he is not wearing any clothing, but, because he thinks appearing to see the clothing is made out to be a sign of character, he doesn’t admit, not even to himself, that he actually sees no clothing at all. Sadly, he doubts even his own perception and falls prey to the weaver’s scandal by pretending to see what he really doesn’t. This deception from the start to the end of the story is due to him not being honest with himself. This type of honesty can most often be the hardest and most painful truth to tell. We may think we are honest with those we are close to, but are we really being honest with ourselves? Selfdeception is associated with practically all other types of deception. We can’t do anything dishonest without first deceiving ourselves in the process. Do we really take a good hard look at ourselves, our motives, and why we do what we do? I’m sure you have seen or experienced the saying that, “one lie leads to another.” I’m sure you have seen or experienced the once thought of, “little white lie” that won’t hurt anyone, that once told, causes unimaginable pain and feelings of betrayal, and then saying to yourself, “Self, Oh, I wish I

would not have been so foolish.” That is what being dishonest to yourself and others can only bring. Needless amounts of pain and suffering, and for what? There is a reason why we in the Sea Services have “Honor” as the first of our “Core Values”. It is only with honor that we can truly fulfill these “Core Values”. One cannot truly have courage unless he is true to himself, nor live up to his commitments unless he is honest with his fellowman. To have Integrity one must live a life of honesty to self and others. Shakespeare said it

this way: “This above all: To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man”

But, as time wears at his pretense Their opinion changes, too.

A poem from an unknown poet shares the following:

A priceless gift, it seems to me That all would like to find Is that supreme state of blessedness That we call “Peace of Mind.”

A fellow who pretends to be A lot of things he’s not Overlooks the possibility Of later being caught.

So – Why pretend a lot of things Your “peace of mind” to mar For deep down in your heart, you know You are just what you are.

He follows a lot of people, Some fall for such, it’s true

That we may strive to live a more honest life in our days before us is my hope for each and every one of us. Because, I believe, this is what will help us most to have that peace and joy we all long for and are meant to have. It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 Until next time, may God bless you and God bless America. Miranda Lambert headlining act for CMT CMT’s ninth annual tour. The nationwide tour will include special guest Eric Church and will also introduce singer-songwriter Josh Kelley to a country audience. The tour kicks off in New York on Sept. 29. Produced by AEG Live, previous CMT tours have featured such superstars as Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland and Keith Urban. “Having that Texas club circuit experience at an early age and also touring with some of the best in the business for several years, I know what

it takes to bring it every night and give fans more than their money’s worth,” says Lambert. “The CMT tour is a great way for me to thank fans for their support this year and show them I can live up to the honors.” Church added, “I’m very excited to be on what I believe will be one of the best tours going out this fall. I’ve been on a lot of tours, and this one is gonna be the heat! I love what Miranda does, and we are gonna take the stage every night locked and cocked. The crowd better be ready for it, ‘cause we are!”

Let us help you meet your measurements! Following a year full of impressive accolades and her first-ever headlining tour, Texas singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert is prepared to hit the road again this fall as the headlining act for CMT on Tour: Miranda Lambert Revolution. When Lambert won top female honors at both the ACM and CMT Awards earlier this year, her first reaction

was “shock” followed by gratefulness. It wasn’t until she embarked on her first headlining tour that the gravity of her accomplishments hit home. As a result, she felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to deliver a live show even better than the one she was already known for. AT THE MOVIES With Movie Maven / Jeri Jacquin I MP Now playing in theatres is the highly anticipated thriller of the summer with director Chris Nolan and Legendary Pictures with “Inception”. This film tells the story of Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a trained extractor of a persons deepest secrets. Technology has become available that allows the human mind to be invaded through dreams. In the world of corporate espionage his talents are called upon but those skills have cost him everything. He begins working with a new team of specialists Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Eames (Tom Hardy), and the newest recruit Ariadne (Ellen Page). Their new assignment, given by Japanese businessman Saito (Ken

twists and turns. With his performance earlier this year in “Shutter Island” I didn’t think it possible to beat it – I was wrong. In “Inception” his character is intelligent, confused, tortured and good at his job. DiCaprio is proving to be one of the finest actors around. Gordon-Levitt is also on top of his game. His character is sharp, quick and extremely agile. Hardy brings on the laughs and Watanabe’s character is focused and a thrill to watch. Murphy as Robert played his role well. As Robert, he must reconcile the relationship with his father that could change everything. It was surprising but nice to see Tom Berenger on the screen once again. Rao as Yusuf has a small

INCEPTION Watanabe), is to infiltrate an energy corporation by getting into the mind of the CEO’s son Robert (Cillian Murphy). With the help of Yusuf (Dileep Rao), the team goes into depth upon depth to finally reach their goal. But it is Cobb who must come to terms with what he has hidden for years that could put the team in jeopardy and only he can stop it if he ever wants to make it back home In order to do that – he may have to destroy what he loves. FINAL WORD: DiCaprio has once again pulled us into a story that is full of

role but well done. If I had a downside it would be Page. Her role here seemed self righteous and a little too smart for her own good. There isn’t a lot of depth here for her. There were times I felt she pulled focus away from the plot of the film but it isn’t enough to sway me from seeing it again. Other cast include: Michael Cane as Miles, Lucas Haas as Nash, Marion Cotillard as Mol, Tom Berenger as Browning and Pete Postlethwaite as Maurice Fisher. This is director Chris Nolan’s offering

Page 32 August 1, 2010 THE MILITARY PRESS

up since the highly regarded film “The Dark Knight”. This film is extremely clever filled with every range of emotion imaginable. To watch this film takes as much dedication from the viewer as it did the director to make it. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Inception” four tubs of popcorn out of five. Finally, an adult film that forces the viewer to think, to pay attention and to remember to pick their jaw up off the floor! If I seem reluctant to say more it is only to keep from giving away anything. This film is an experience in itself.

The CGI is beautiful and brilliant to watch. Nolan demands the audience’s full attention and he gets it. Looking away for even a moment robs you of a detail you will need later. Go in knowing it has a long running time of 150 minutes but to shorten this film would take away from its brilliance. Remember – it is all in what you believe. In the end – your mind is the scene of the crime!

AT THE MOVIES With Roger Ebert I MP

SALT

“Salt” is a damn fine thriller. It does all the things I can’t stand in bad movies, and does them in a good one. It’s like a rebuke to all the lousy action movie directors who’ve been banging pots and pans together in our skulls. It winds your clock tight and the alarm doesn’t go off for 100 minutes. It’s gloriously absurd. This movie has holes in it big enough to drive the whole movie through. The laws of physics seem to be suspended here the same way as in a Road Runner cartoon. Angelina Jolie runs full speed out into thin air and doesn’t look down until she’s in the helicopter at the end. Jolie is one fine-looking woman. You don’t need me to tell you that. It’s why she gets the big bucks. The movies have celebrated her eyes, lips, profile, biceps, boobs, waist, butt, thighs. “Salt” pays tribute to her ankles. Anyone who can jump from the heights she does here, in the way she does it, may die from a lot of causes, but a sprained ankle won’t be one of them. You know “parkour”? Wikipedia defines it as “the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle

within one’s path by adapting one’s movements to the environment.” Jolie’s character, Evelyn Salt, makes it look as “Run, Lola, Run” was about walking. There’s a scene when she descends eight stories in an elevator shaft by simply jumping across it to one wall support lower than the last. Each time she lands, she says, “Oof,” but that’s about it. You’re not going to hear much about the plot here. Nothing I could tell you would be necessary for you to know, and everything could be fatal to your enjoyment. Let’s just make it simple: She plays a woman determined to single-handedly save the world from nuclear annihilation. Oh, it’s not that the plot holds water or makes any sense, but it’s a pleasure to be surprised here and there along the way, and it’s not like the movie lingers over each twist and turn as if it’s just pulled an elephant out of a hat. No, each revelation is the occasion for another chase scene. Evelyn Salt escapes from, or breaks into, one inescapable and/or impenetrable stronghold after another. And she

does it all by herself, and with her bare hands, plus a few guns, grenades and a homemade rocket launcher. You know how Ginger Rogers said, “I did everything Astaire did, except backwards and wearing heels”? Evelyn does everything James Bond did, except backwards and barefoot in the snow. At one point in the movie, Evelyn is chained to a concrete floor in a North Korean dungeon while a rubber hose is charmingly stuck into her mouth and gasoline is poured in. That’s at the BEGINNING of the film. I’m not going to tell you what she survives later. She plays a spy for the CIA -- but now I’m giving away too many details. Important supporting roles are played by Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

MARYCHAPINCARPENTER

The movie has been directed by Phillip Noyce, an Australian whose work ranges from Tom Clancy thrillers to the great and angry drama “Rabbit-Proof Fence.” Here he performs as a master craftsman, aided by the cinematography of Robert Elswit and the editing of Stuart Baird and John Gilroy. The movie has a great many chase scenes, and faithful readers will know that these, in general, have lost their novelty for me. But a good chase scene is a good chase scene. It demands some sense of spatial coherence, no matter how impossible; some continuity of movement, no matter how devised by stuntwork and effects; and genuine interest for the audience. It’s in that area that Angelina Jolie really delivers. She brings the conviction to her role that such a movie requires. She throws herself into it with animal energy. Somehow, improbably, she doesn’t come off as a superhero (although her immunity suggests one), but as a brave and determined fighter. How does she look? She looks beautiful by default, and there’s a scene in an office where she looks back over her shoulder to talk with Schreiber and you think, oh, my. But neither Jolie nor Noyce overplay her beauty, and she gets gritty and bloody and desperate, and we get involved. Although the movie finds an ingenious way to overcome history and resurrect the Russians as movie villains, neither that nor any other element of the plot demands analysis. It’s all a hook to hang a thriller on. It’s exhilarating to see a genre picture done really well.

For home buyers seeking a coastal address at an unbeatable price, the beach is within reach, both geographically and financially, at North River, Taylor Morrison’s private, gated townhome community in Oceanside. For residents of North River, it’s just a short drive or a ride along a riverside bike trail to Oceanside’s popular beaches and harbor, which offer surfing, swimming and boating year-round. At the end of the Oceanside fishing pier, which is the longest pier on the West Coast, Ruby’s Diner serves breakfast, burgers and dinners accompanied by spectacular ocean and shoreline views. Across the street from the pier, steaks and seafood are the specialties at a new gourmet restaurant, 333 Pacific. “This is Southern California living at its best, and it’s available for prices

starting in the $230,000s with no MelloRoos taxes,” stated Steve Wolpin, vice president of sales and marketing for Taylor Morrison. “The combination of style, lifestyle and affordability makes North River an extraordinary value. Plus FHA and VA financing are available, making it possible to move in with little or no money down.” The style of North River is showcased in two distinctive three-story floor plans ranging from approximately 1,132 to 1,372 square feet. These impressive townhomes will encompass two to three bedrooms and two and one-half to three baths plus a private deck. Every home will include a two-car attached garage. Along with being minutes from the beach, North River is even closer to local amenities. A new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market and several dining choices are directly across the street. Additional grocery stores, Kmart, Walmart, and a 13-screen movie theater are also nearby, For recreation, North River is also within walking distance of two community sports parks plus a community recreation center and skate park. Children living at North River can walk to their classes at brand-new elementary and middle schools. For commuters, North River is less than eight miles from the I-5 Freeway and the Coaster, Metrolink and Amtrak Surfliner train station. Christy Turlington – No baggage at 41 ”The Tasmanians, who never committed adultery, are now extinct,” wrote that cynical philosopher W. Somerset Maugham. Can you name “the big six” of the ‘90s? I’m talking supermodels. They were Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista. Now, Christy speaks: “I used to think my looks were a curse when I was 18 and my looks were what I was. It did feel very limiting. But modeling gave me the kind of confidence a lot of girls in their teenage years don’t have. The industry saved me from having to be self-conscious.” Christy, now 41, works with the humanitarian Christian Action Research and Education group, as an advocate for maternal health. She has a documentary coming “No Woman, No Cry.” She spends summers in the Hamptons with her husband Ed Burns and children. She has a master’s degree in public health. “Getting older is baggage for so many people but I don’t spend time on things I can’t control ... there are more pressures on actresses these days than models. We’re being celebrated for being older at the moment. I get asked to do campaigns all the time that aren’t designed for a 41-year-old and I feel good about accepting those jobs.” GOOD NEWS among the bad. U.S. scientists believe they may have discovered a “universal flu vaccine” that would protect against many strains of the virus. It’s only a few years away, say, maybe 2013. This would be a “one jab fits all” and early safety trials have already started. In Bethesda, Md., the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is very excited about these results. And a team in Scotland has discovered a gene that causes breast cancer to spread though the body. This means one in five with breast cancer and diagnosed as HER2 positive might be helped. Drugs are in the pipeline that could stop the spread. If you are running around hiking and trying to scale even insignificant mountain peaks, take care and don’t do it in flip-flops, Crocs or Ugg boots. Mountain rescue teams say their rescue efforts are hindered by scores of stranded people wearing inappropriate footwear. The average hiker/mountain climber also doesn’t carry enough water. You hear that, you vacationers! THE ITALIANS are getting serious. They just arrested more than 300 people and confiscated millions of dollars in the biggest police operation in 15 years against the Mafia in Calabria and Milan. They targeted something called the “Ndrangheta,” which takes its name from the Greek word “virtue.” And they targeted the senior man in Lombardy, where the Mafia invests its money in legitimate enterprises. (The Ndrangheta’s take is so large it equals almost 3 percent of Italy’s gross domestic product.) There is a controversy in the Hamptons -- isn’t there always? This concerns the century-old Parrish Art Museum, right in the heart of Southampton on Job’s Lane. It has announced that it will vacate its stately home and move to a futuristic barn/ hangar-type building to be erected out on a former potato field. The architects Herzog and de Meuron are to design the Parrish’s new home and it will house the Samuel Longstreth Parrish collection of Greek and Roman statues and the Littlejohn collection of American paintings by such as Thomas

Moran, William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam. Though some members don’t want to give up the old Job’s Lane museum space, there they were the other eve dancing the night away to honor painter Ross Bleckner. Told by writer Gregory Speck that he’d seen a number of Close artworks on display in the Great Plains Museums of Kansas City, Omaha, Tulsa and Oklahoma City -- Close quipped: “That’s great news. But I didn’t know they had any of them!” Oh, what is my formula for soothing everyone’s feelings over the museum move? Leave the busts of the Caesars on the little promenade beside the current museum. Move everything else to the potato field. Southampton would still have a tiny cultural park in which to soothe its fevered brow..

Norton out as ‘Hulk’: Marvel Execs, Actor engage in verbal jousting A war of words erupted between Marvel Studios topper Kevin Feige and WME after it was revealed that Norton was being replaced as Bruce Banner in Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers,” which unites the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk characters on the bigscreen. Pic bows May 4, 2012, with Paramount distribbing. In a tersely worded statement to the entertainment website HitFix, Feige touched on rumors that Norton had been difficult to work with while making 2008’s reboot of “The Incredible Hulk,” which Universal

distribbed and Louis Leterrier (“Clash of the Titans”) helmed. “Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members,” Feige wrote. “’The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H., Chris E., Sam (Jackson), Scarlett (Johansson), and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the

coming weeks.” The surprisingly loaded statement, coming from an exec who usually doesn’t discuss details on his slate of movies, triggered a rebuttal from WME, which reps Norton. “This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light,” agent Brian Swardstrom wrote. Swardstrom detailed plans by Feige to bring back Norton as the Hulk, saying meetings with Whedon had taken place and progressed to a financial offer. Negotiations got under way soon

afterward. But recently, “after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal,” Marvel decided to move on and cast another actor. “We accepted their decision with no hard feelings,” Swardstrom said. “We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton’s talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.” Either way, Norton is moving on after posting a statement on Facebook. As most of you know, I don’t like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience’s fullest enjoyment of the ‘magic’ that films can have,” he posted. “But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won’t work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in ‘The Avengers.’ ... I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be part of the Hulk’s long and excellent history.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s toughest roll “I’VE BEEN married to one Marxist and one fascist, and neither one would take the garbage out!” This from the fabled actor-directorproducer Lee Grant, who won an Oscar umpteen years ago for ‘Shampoo,” which starred Warren Beatty. Before that, she was Oscar nominated for “Detective Story” with Kirk Douglas and for “The Landlord” with Beau Bridges. She is a much-neglected genius in show business. The Academy has forgotten she exists. But I haven’t. And, hey, what about that Lifetime Achievement Oscar for the one and only Doris Day, the woman who had more hits and made more money for Warner Bros. and Universal in the ‘50 and mid’60s than any other movie star before or since? They just keep ignoring Doris. And I think it’s because Doris keeps ignoring them. She has made it clear she wouldn’t attend, even if honored. It’s bad form on the Academy’s part. They should go to her! YOU THINK Mel Gibson’s telephone rants are news? You think Lindsay Lohan going to jail is news? Roman Polanski getting off the hook? Forget it. Where have you been? The stop-the-presses item of the week, the month, year, decade, perhaps of all time, is this: Gwyneth Paltrow’s baby weight and how strenuous it was for her to lose it. The Oscar-winning star of “Shakespeare in Love” says losing the pounds she gained after the birth of her second child was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Really? That was the hardest thing in her life? Wow. I want Miss Paltrow’s life! The annoying Miss Paltrow, who’s married to Coldplay hottie Chris Martin, exercises two hours a day. These exercises do not extend to her brain, apparently. Because not only does the actress say losing the baby weight was an epic trial for her, but that any woman can regain her figure if she tries hard enough. “Exercise while your child is in the room,” she declares. Paltrow thinks there’s no excuse for any woman -- even a woman without her resources -- to trim down after the trauma of childbirth. Her implication? If you don’t lose, you’re just lazy and don’t care. (This is one of the insane requirements of celebrity -one must flaunt a taut tummy almost immediately after giving birth. Fine, but please don’t impose this insanity on normal women with real lives, no nannies, no trainers, no dieticians and no plastic surgeons.) Paltrow is not among the first rank in stardom these days. Long gone is her era as Harvey Weinstein’s favorite, though fashion magazines like Vogue still dote on her. I wonder if her remarks could be the nail in a career coffin, with women anyway. Paltrow’s ex-lover Brad Pitt travels the world helping the poor. She’s worried about her rear end, her thighs and her stomach.

San Diego - Summer is in full swing and our military is being honored all around town with discounts and specials. Combine your visit with a walk to the nearby Gaslamp Quarter. All Around the State – Nature has gone hi-tech. California State Parks has introduced a mobile app, created for the last minute traveler, designed to run on mobile devices and smart phones. It will display campsite availability and activities like biking, hiking, tours, fishing and more for all state parks. Visitors can locate parks, make reservations, find bike trails, etc. In addition, one can check out seasonal parks, provide input to the park system on Facebook and learn about new information on Twitter. For more about this innovative way to plan your camping trip logon to http://m.parks.ca.gov. Additionally, the Nature Conservancy has created a new interactive map where viewers can take a virtual tour of California’s State Parks. To swim with otters, walk among

the redwoods or sit on the beach, go to http://www.nature.org/popups/ features/art31705.html. Lastly, Yosemite National Park has its own iPhone application featuring a Global Positioning System (GPS) map which indicates the visitors’ location as they hike to Lower Yosemite Falls. The app also highlights 22 points of interest with stories of wildlife, the environment, John Muir, floods, fires, and forests. In addition, it will allow visitors to locate the nearest restroom, visitor center, museum and shuttle bus stops. A portion of the proceeds from the application will go to the Yosemite Conservancy to further protect and preserve Yosemite National Park. COMICS AND FUN STUFF Universal Crossword

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Something festering behind the scenes must not be allowed to grow. Put an end to whatever you feel can have a negative affect on your life or your future. Be swift to make whatever change is needed. 3 stars TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Polishing your look or updating your image will have a good affect on your attitude and bring compliments your way. Don’t let anyone put you down. Jealousy will be the reason someone speaks out against you. 3 stars GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Your generosity and abundance of energy and desire to help others will not go unnoticed. The rewards you receive may not be monetary but you will learn a valuable lesson regarding how much you should give and where to draw the line. 4 stars CANCER (June 21-July 22): You can fuss all you want about a situation you face but, until you actually do something about it, you will continue to face turmoil and regret. Change is needed if you want to reverse negatives in your life. 2 stars LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Take control of whatever situation you face. The changes you bring about will meet with opposition but your determination will outmatch anyone trying to stand in your way. You have more leverage than you realize. 5 stars VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You can outsmart anyone trying to pressure or push you into something you don’t want to take part in. Put your money in a safe place so you aren’t tempted to donate, lend, or spend unwisely. Offer love and support in return for the same. 3 stars LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Talk about your concerns and you will be able to fix any trouble spots you encounter. There are greater opportunities ahead of you. Recognize what you have to look forward to. The best is yet to come. 3 stars SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your hard work will pay off in the recognition you receive and the support you get to keep moving forward. The more emphasis you put on what you can offer, the greater your opportunity to reach your goal. Travel, promotion and presentation should be scheduled. 3 stars SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Making a move or opening your doors to friends and relatives will help you realize how much you have to offer. Sharing will help you recognize your potential as a friend, lover and leader. Be honest about what you need in your life. 5 stars CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don’t give in to a bully. You owe it to the people you care about most to spend time nurturing your relationships and building a strong home base. Travel may be tempting but it isn’t likely to end the way you want. 2 stars AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Nothing is out of reach if you diversify and try new means and methods to get involved with the things you enjoy doing most. There is a way to give back to the people you’ve taken from in the past. Honor your promises. 4 stars PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The more you procrastinate, the more challenging your chores will become. A partnership will undergo some unexpected changes, causing uncertainty regarding your future. Don’t act in haste when more thought is required. 3 stars
