When reading about the “New Deal,” one has to see the connection between Presidents Roosevelt and Obama.

Roosevelt was under tremendous pressure because of the Great Depression and 25% unemployment. The majority of politicians and the U.S. public wanted the country to stay out of the war. Roosevelt, looking down the road of time, knew we would have to eventually get involved. With the country being mostly pacificist, he had a hard sell on his hands. In spite of that, he began to prepare for war. The programs instituted built up our Army and Navy and when war broke out, we were prepared.

hen parents send their children off to summer camp, they reasonably expect them to return refreshed and more attuned with the world than when they left home. Even in their wildest nightmares, they don’t foresee them returning in a pine box.

Writing in London’s Daily Telegraph, reporter Mark Hughes notes, “Norway’s intelligence service had previously been criticized for its failure to keep track of suspected terror cells and the country was felt to be complacent about the prospect of a terror attack,” according to secret cables from WikiLeaks files.

That may be true, but how does a government crack a “cell” that isn’t a cell?

Breivik only recently created a Facebook page and his 1,500-page manifesto ranted against Muslims (about 2 percent of Norway’s population is made up of Muslim immigrants, and that number is growing) and indigenous Europeans, whom he accused of betraying their heritage. That none of his young victims are responsible for the conditions he railed against adds to the madness of this inexplicable event.

Listening to some of the survivors tell their stories is heartbreaking. It took Norway police 90 minutes to arrive on scene, probably because of the “diversionary” bomb Breivik exploded outside government offices in Oslo. Breivik used the time to hunt down more victims until police finally arrived.

Norway forbids civilians from carrying concealed weapons, or owning an automatic weapon, unless they are gun collectors. As in America, gun laws do not deter criminals who are determined to cause harm with a weapon. What would have deterred Breivik would have been a gun in the hands of a competent person capable of stopping his mass-murdering spree.

If Norway can be a site for terror, is there a safe place on Earth? The answer is no. There are no “safe” places; no one can be 100 percent safe. Does that mean everyone should be armed? Not necessarily. What it means is that for some countries, some people and some places, a way to make the environment as safe as humanly possible is to have properly armed and trained people who can respond to such events.

Would Anders Behring Breivik have thought twice about his killing spree if he had known in advance that someone would shoot back? That is impossible to know. But if someone on Utoya Island had returned fire, there’s a possibility that far fewer would have been killed. This approach may not be pleasant for some to contemplate, but the alternative is more personal and national mourning, as is now being experienced in Norway.

Ian Plimer, the ‘expert sceptic’ is a mining geologist whose academic credibility is based on a book riddled with dodgy graphs

Photograph: Jens Dige/ AP One of the many frustrations for climate change researchers arising from the current hacked climate emails saga has been the way that so-called sceptics have been given so much uncritical coverage by journalists who are not properly scrutinising their misleading and inaccurate claims.

Take Professor Ian Plimer, for instance, who is now wheeled out by many sceptic groups who are seeking a veneer of academic credibility.

Prof. Plimer helped the UK Independence party last week to launch its declaration of climate change denial and is a member of the academic advisory board of Lord Nigel Lawson’s new lobby group, the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

Plimer is gaining lots of new publicity as an “expert sceptic” from parts of the UK media, with numerous TV and radio interviews, full-page opinion pieces in The Mail on Sunday and even a splash on the front page of the Daily Express.

The trouble is that Professor Plimer is not a climate researcher and has not published any scientific papers on the change in climate that we have been witnessing over the past century. He is an Australian mining geologist who gained fame in his native country for publicly tackling creationists over their denial of the evidence for evolution.

But Prof. Plimer has published a book, Heaven and Earth which has become the bible for many climate change sceptics. His book is riddled with inaccurate information about cli-

mate change.

The very first graph in the book, for instance, purports to show temperature observations and projections between 1990 and 2025. One of the lines on this graph is labelled “HADCRUT,” indicating that the data source was, allegedly, the Met Office’s Hadley Centre and the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.

However, almost none of the data points accurately reflect the official records from the source, and 2008 is completely misrepresented as the coldest year since 1993. Elsewhere in his book, Professor Plimer claims 2007 was the coldest year since 2005, contradicting his own graph, and also disagreeing with all of the official records of global temperature.

But perhaps the most staggering inaccuracy is in the third graph in his book, which is supposed to show global average temperature between 1880 and about 2002. It appears to show that the amount of global warming prior to 1945 was much bigger than that since the late 1970s. This is in complete contrast to the official records maintained by the Met Office, Nasa and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which all show that the warming since the 1970s has been much greater.

So what is the origin of Prof. Plimer’s alternative record of global temperatures? The book does not cite a source and Prof. Plimer has so far refused requests to reveal its provenance.

But one eagle-eyed blogger spotted that it was identical to a graph used in the very first broadcast of the discredited UK TV program The Great Global Warming Swindle. Soon after it was broadcast in March 2007, the programme-makers admitted that the graph had been altered by taking an original graph (posted on a website to collect names on a petition against ratification of the Kyoto protocol by the United States), purporting to show global temperatures up to the mid1980s.

They had wanted a more up-to-date graph and so had simply stretched the bottom axis and relabeled it as if it extended up to the present. As a result they missed out all of the warming that has occurred since the mid-1980s, giving the false impression that more warming had occurred before 1945.

When a UK newspaper revealed the maniupulation, the program-makers dropped it from repeat broadcasts and the DVD version. But Prof. Plimer appears to have revived it.

Now he is being interviewed around the world as an “expert sceptic” on climate change with some newsworthy alternative views to “balance” the mainstream consensus among researchers.

And his dodgy graphs and inaccurate claims about global temperatures are being portrayed by some parts of the media as a “different side of the story”, when really they are just mistakes presented as fact.

He won election to the New York Senate in 1910. President Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1920.

39, disaster hit-he was stricken with poliomyelitis. Demonstrating indomitable courage, he fought to regain the use of his legs, particularly through swimming. At the 1924 Democratic Convention he dramatically appeared on crutches to nominate Alfred E. Smith as “the Happy Warrior.” In 1928 Roosevelt became Governor of New York.

He was elected President in November 1932, to the first of four terms.

By March there were 13,000,000 unemployed, and almost every bank was closed. In his first “hundred days,” he proposed, and Congress enacted, a sweeping program to bring recovery to business and agriculture, relief to the unemployed and to those in danger of losing farms and homes, and reform, especially through the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

By 1935 the Nation had achieved some measure of recovery, but businessmen and bankers were turning more and more against Roosevelt’s New Deal program. They feared his experiments, were appalled because he had taken the Nation off the gold standard and allowed deficits in the budget, and disliked the concessions to labor. Roosevelt responded with a new program of reform: Social Security, heavier taxes on the wealthy, new controls over banks and public utilities, and an enormous work relief program for the unemployed.

In 1936 he was re-elected by a topheavy margin. Feeling he was armed with a popular mandate, he sought legislation to enlarge the Supreme Court, which had been invalidating key New Deal measures. Roosevelt lost the Supreme Court battle, but a revolution in constitutional law took place. Thereafter the Government could legally regulate the economy.

Roosevelt had pledged the United States to the “good neighbor” policy, transforming the Monroe Doctrine from a unilateral American manifesto into arrangements for mutual action against aggressors. He also sought

FDR’s 1941 Ford Roadster through neutrality legislation to keep the United States out of the war in Europe, yet at the same time to strengthen nations threatened or attacked. When France fell and England came under siege in 1940, he began to send Great Britain all possible aid short of actual

military involvement.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roosevelt directed organization of the Nation’s manpower and resources for global war.

Feeling that the future peace of the world would depend upon relations between the United States and Russia, he devoted much thought to the planning of a United Nations, in which, he hoped, international difficulties could be settled.

As the war drew to a close, Roosevelt’s health deteriorated, and on April 12, 1945, while at Warm Springs, Georgia, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Battlefield Angels takes as its starting point a startling fact: more American service people wounded in action are surviving today than in any previous war in history. During the American Revolution, 40% of soldiers wounded in action eventually died of their injuries. In Vietnam it was 25%. The number today is 10%.

Several story lines intersect in the narrative: the ill-preparedness of America’s medical corps at the start of our wars; our quick battlefield learning; the strength and solace that medics and corpsmen provide to front-line soldiers; and the medical benefits that have accrued to civilians as the result of our wars.

Battlefield Angels Saving Lives Under Enemy Fire Copyright © 2011 by Scott McGaugh

O

n August 26, 1942, rain was pounding the USS Seadragon’s periscope, blurring Captain Ferrall’s view of the South China Sea. The sub had departed Freemantle, Australia, sixteen days earlier on August 26, 1942, on its fourth patrol of the war.

The next day it reached its assigned station. Secret Operation Order 49-42 directed the Seadragon to pursue and destroy enemy shipping.

Wheeler Lipes had always been a serious young man. Standing five feet, six inches tall, and weighing about 120 pounds, Lipes had small feet and small hands. He dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Navy in 1936. Several months later, Lipes headed for corpsman duty at a Navy hospital in Philadelphia.

“Hey, Doc, I don’t feel very good,” Seaman first class Darrell Dean Rector said to Lipes. On the youngster’s nineteenth birthday, a dull ache in his belly made it impossible to stand up straight.

For three days the stomach pain had persisted, and now his temperature was

102.4 degrees. “I think I need a laxative.”

Lipes wasn’t so sure. “You lie down, and I’ll go stand your watch for you.”

Two hours later Lipes returned. No change.

Lipes left to see the captain. “What do you think is wrong with him?” Ferrall asked.

The corpsman had assisted with appendectomies before transferring to the submarine service. “I think he needs an appendectomy.”

Ferrall and Executive Officer Norvelle Ward blanched. They were weeks away from a friendly port and appen-

dectomies even in hospitals were far from routine. Ferrall turned to Lipes.

“What are you going to do?”

“Sir, I can’t do anything,” Lipes replied.

“Son, we’re out here in enemy waters. When I fire torpedoes I know sometimes they’ll miss. But we all have a job to do. You tell me this sailor’s got appendicitis. Now, can you do an appendectomy or not?”

Only twenty-three years old, Lipes’s heart pounded as he considered his orders. A corpsman with modest basic training stood between Rector and a ruptured appendix that would kill him.

Worse, Lipes realized he lacked the tools he had seen surgeons use when he had assisted in the Philadelphia Navy hospital.

Captain Ferrall ordered the Seadragon down to 120 feet, to get below the stormy sea swells. The Seadragon’s helmsmen would have to keep the submarine perfectly level for as long as the surgery required. At 1046 on September 11, 1942, Lipes began operating. The air in the crowded wardroom grew stale.

Two hours and fifteen minutes after the first incision, Lipes completed the operation. It had taken nearly three times as long as it would have for a practiced surgeon.

Lipes and his assistants peeled off their sweat-soaked surgical gowns and sat down with mugs of coffee. Word raced through the crew. It was over.

Rector had survived, but now Lipes and the rest of the crew had to wait to see if he would recover.

“I’m still in there pitching,” said Darrell Rector forty-five minutes later, when he regained consciousness.

In the following hours, Lipes checked on Rector regularly. An initial fever spiked then ebbed as the Seadragon resumed its patrol and the surgical team disbanded. Two days later a pair of sailors helped Rector to his feet.

He took his first few tentative steps as the Seadragon assumed its assigned position in the South China Sea. Five days after, the sub’s cook complained to Lipes that Rector “was eating like a horse.” A week later the Seadragon engaged a Japanese heavy cruiser and two destroyers and survived a depth charge attack.

(ASW). In March of 1962 the squadron again changed aircraft when Sikorsky’s SH-3 Sea King entered the fleet. The Sea King, incorporating upgrades over the years, would take HS-6 into the 1990s.

Along the way, the squadron built a history and a reputation worthy of the name, “World Famous Indians.” HS-6 recovered Mercury Program astronauts Wally Sch-

irra in 1962 and Gordon Cooper in 1963.

In 1966, during U.S. strikes into Vietnam, the Indians rescued 16 downed aviators. A SEVENTH Fleet Commendation followed in 1969 for services provided following the collision at sea between USS EVANS and HMAS MELBOURNE. In 1971, the Indians recovered the crew of Apollo 14 returning from the moon. Later that year, the squadron deployed to the east coast to join Carrier Air Wing SEVEN aboard USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA 62) to conduct an evaluation of the emerging CV concept.

In 1992, the squadron transitioned to Sikorsky’s SH-60F and HH-60H Seahawk helicopters. Armed with these new, highly capable aircraft, the Indians remained part of CVW 11 and from 1992 to 2003 conducted several successful deployments aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), and USS NIMITZ (CVN 68), to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Arabian Gulf.

In 2001, during the opening days of the Global War on Terrorism, HS-6 conducted a joint detachment with HS-11, staging their HH-60H helicopters at a forward base in Pakistan to provide Combat Search and Rescue for the initial Operation ENDURING FREEDOM air strikes into Afghanistan. Following another FIFTH Fleet deployment in 2003, the Indians deployed in the summer of 2004 aboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76) for its South American inter-fleet transit. WESTPAC 2005 found HS-6 focused on Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, flying over 2,500 hours and nearly 1,000 sorties from USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait to patrol the skies of Southern Iraq. In March 2010, the

squadron completed its final cruise with H-60 F/H helicopters, an eight month deployment to FIFTH Fleet in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. HS-6 began the transition to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron SIX in early 2011. The transition process was completed with a transition ceremony on 08 July, 2011.

Remember the days when the Marine Corps advertised that it was “Looking for a few good men”? How times have changed. These days, the Marines are recruiting women as well, and there seems to be no limit to how high they can go.

At Parris Island, South Carolina, there is a sign on the way in that makes things clear: Here is where they make Marines. Now, this Marine factory has a new foreman, or, more correctly, forewoman: Brigadier General Loretta Reynolds. “There are times now that I wake up in the morning and I say, ‘Am I really here? Am I really at Parris Island?’” says Reynolds.

General Reynolds took command of Parris Island in June of this year and she’s already made history as the first woman to lead the Marine recruiting depot here. It’s a distinction she acknowledges, but won’t dwell on.

Reynolds is one of only two active female generals in the Marines.

At 6 feet tall, she cuts an impressive, and potentially imposing figure.

But it’s her stature as a leader that has earned her respect. A 1986 graduate and former basketball player at the Naval Academy, she is the first female

Marine to hold a command position in a battle zone — which she did when she was stationed in Afghanistan.

Now she’ll not just lead Marines, but create them.

“At the end of the day, we push them to be more than they ever thought they could be,” Reynolds says.

This is a tough place. As the July sun baked Parris Island, CBS News joined General Reynolds as she observed her first “crucible” — a 54-hour test of strength, endurance, and teamwork that each recruit must pass before being called a United States Marine.

Reynolds says becoming a Marine is as hard as they can possibly make it. “We have to make it hard because our nation expects the United States Marine Corps to be its 911 force, to always be ready to always do the right thing when the situation requires it,” Reynolds says.

Parris Island graduates 20,000 Marines every year. Male recruits from east of the Mississippi, and all female recruits come here to join the Corps.

“It’s an honor, it’s a blessing, and I am going to work hard every day to take good care of this depot and the Marines here,” Reynolds says.

The truth is civilians support the armed forces emotionally, physically, mentally and most important, financially. Supporting our military actually comes first and foremost when building a strong foundation for this nation. There is great importance in making sure Americans’ hard earned wages are being used wisely by the government. There have been some concerns that the military personnel have not been handling the benefits they receive for sacrificing there lives for this country honorably.

Once you sign the contract with the armed forces it is binding and for some can be a slow and painful process living out that agreement. That is why the military does not want “folks” that are not cut out for the life anymore than those “folks” want to stay. Choosing this lifestyle for the wrong reasons, such as financial gain, benefits, residential resources or educational tuition, can be damaging to not only the military but to the person’s family and of course this country. The Miramar Air Show is coming to an iPhone near you — the one in your hand. Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) at MCAS Miramar has released its official app of the 2011 Miramar Air Show. Designed for both the iPhone and the iPad, the app provides an interactive tour for fans of all ages.

Air show photos videos and detailed history are included regarding performers such as the Blue Angels, as well as displays, pilots, schedule, FAQs, site map and more. This year’s air show is scheduled for Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and 2.

TRICARE has announced the launch of it’s Express Rx mobile app and mobile-optimized website that allow beneficiaries to manage their prescriptions and access important health information safely and securely from anywhere using their smart phone. Another feature allows users to view all their prescriptions.

On GPS-enabled smart phones, the app can direct beneficiaries to the closest retail pharmacy in their network.

Plan could mean a smaller COLA

Due to the economic climate of the past two years military retirees and VA compensation recipients have not seen a cost-of-living-adjustment to their pay.

The 2011 inflation rate could result in a significant COLA in 2012. However, in an effort to reduce government expenses, the Senate is now considering changing the rules for how COLA is determined. The proposed changes will likely reduce the COLA in 2012 and beyond.

Getting aid to homeless women vets Hoping to enhance the aid provided to women veterans, the Department of Labor has released a guide for groups that service former female servicemembers who find themselves homeless.

The guide is titled, “The TraumaInformed Care for Women Veterans Experiencing Homelessness: A Guide for Service Providers.” A key challenge in aiding women veterans is that many women don’t think of themselves as veterans.

The female veteran population is estimated to grow from 1.8 million in 2010 to 2.1 million by 2036, according to the VA. The guide notes that women vets are up to four times as likely as

their male counterparts to be younger, self-identify as a racial minority, have lower incomes and be unemployed.

Comedian knows what it takes to be a Marine Who says there aren’t any real men in Hollywood?

Rob Riggle may best known for playing a funny guy in films like “The Hangover,” “The Other Guys” and “Step Brothers,” but in real life, the actor plays an even more important role: Marine Corps Reservist.

Lt. Col Riggle, as he is more formally known, joined the Marine Corps in college at the University of Kansas and is proud of his service. “One—I earned the title Marine, no one gave it to me. I’ll be proud of that as long as I’m alive,” Riggle said in an interview in Marines Magazine. “Two—Marines are loyal to each other. I like loyalty. Three—Marine Corps history and tradition is something to be proud of, and I’ve been part of that history for the last 19 years. And four— honor, courage and commitment. Those words really do mean something.”

Riggle, who has been stationed in areas as far-flung as Liberia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, says that his service in the Marine Corps has readied him for rigors of Hollywood. “It made me mentally tough, which is what you have to be in show business,” says Riggle. “Show

By Crystal Arriaga Yes ladies, the gloves are off and I am hitting this subject head on. Over time I have met wives who claim to adore their mothersin-law. I tend to turn my head sideways and say, “Really?

There are those of us who feel like we’re in a bad revolving rerun of the movies “Monsterin-law” and “Groundhog Day.” Miscommunications can and do happen due to different personalities conflicting when trying to adjust the position of the main woman in her man’s life. It’s not a drinking contest, it’s more of a relay race. The new wife

graciously comes in and says to his mother, “Thanks a lot. It’s my turn and I’ll finish the race. You did great but take a seat.” Remember in the vows when the couple is told to leave the families behind and cling to each other for love, support and all else? Well a monster-in-law can conveniently block out that portion of the ceremony. Is it just that she doesn’t believe that the words are meant for her or what? How is a couple supposed to start a life together if the apron strings are not cut?

For the good hearted wives with difficult mothers-in-laws — stand and be heard! Mothers-in-law need to know you love her son and will do anything to make him happy and so should she regarding her place in your marriage.

It is not okay for her to be a third wheel, pry, manipulate and call numerous times throughout the day just to check on her baby. If we don’t iron every piece of clothing or cook and clean like June Cleaver it will be okay.

Any last minute unannounced flights to visit and attempts to wash our underwear are an absolute no-no — regardless of what she thinks. Thanks for the not-so-subtle hints but we will not be making your famous casseroles, Swedish meatballs or brownies. I don’t want to make them anyway!

For a time in-laws molded and shaped their boys into the amazing men we married. They may not know they’re being disrespectful even though we feel otherwise. They’ll want to visit and should want to be with the both of you. Family is important so try spa days, shopping trips and salons in attempt to bond. Make the best out of any pessimism; you have then shown maturity, grace and poise under pressure. Who’s up for some wine with me?

Does what we say really matter?

W

ell, this is my last week in the military as a Chaplain for the Navy and Marine Corps, twenty-eight years active and reserve. It has been one of the most rewarding works I have ever done. It has provided many exciting opportunities… I have traveled to amazing places around the world, have met 1000’s of wonderful people, and have been very blessed. I thank all who I have had the opportunity to cross paths with along this amazing journey.

It is now a bittersweet leaving active duty. I will continue serving those who serve in some capacity and will continue to write and share messages of “Hope & Healing.” I thank all who write the papers and me about my articles. My hope of uplifting others is why I do it. Soooo…

It was once said by Noah Webster, “Language is the immediate gift of God.” It is said that language is the one gift that gives us ability to shape and create ideas, to share thoughts and feelings in our relationships, builds the communities we live in by sharing our cultures, and overall, it helps to make our lives livable.

However, you and I know that sometimes we are all too careless with what we say to others.

It has been stated by F. L. Lucas in his, “What is Style?” writing, “we take infinite pains about having style in our clothes, but many of us remain curiously indifferent about having it in our words.”

I actually had a talk about this with my dad on a visit a while back while we were hitting some golf balls. I mentioned that he works really hard at his game, but hasn’t really been working all that hard on his tongue. I simply told him it doesn’t represent his true intelligence and could he, for me, remember that I think more highly of him than that. He knew he was being intellectually lazy and said he would be more mindful of it…and has been since.

A few years ago I heard about a great talk to women about the power of “girl talk.” The speaker said that, in girl talk, women can be so hard on one another, often trying to one-up each other by saying hurtful or competitive things. One example was when a young wife mentioned to some friends that her husband was deploying again, and another woman replied that her husband would never do that to her… the inference being, that the deploying husband must not love his wife as much. This woman did not leave that gathering feeling uplifted or strengthened, but depressed. Perhaps you have been on the receiving end of such “girl talk” or maybe were the one mistakenly diminishing someone’s self esteem with thoughtless comments.

Let me share a story I had given to me that emphasizes the point. It is called: “The Frogs.”

This story holds two lessons: 1. There is power of life and death in the tongue.

An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift one up and help one make it through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill that person, literally as in the first frog, or figuratively as in the way we treat others in the way we talk to them, like in the “girl talk” example.

Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path.

It is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another. Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up.

George Elliot said it this way, “Blessed is the man (or the woman) who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving us wordy evidence of the fact.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow shared this warning when he said, “A torn jacket is soon mended, but hard words bruise the heart of a child, (and others).” May we try harder this week to be careful with our words, is my prayer.

As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and God bless this great country and those who serve their fellowman.

There’s nothing like having a midget for a butler.” – W. C. Fields William Claude Dukenfield (January 29, 1880[1] – December 25, 1946), better known as W. C. Fields, was an American comedian, actor, juggler and writer.

[2] Fields was known for his comic persona as a misanthropic and hard-drinking egotist who remained a sympathetic character despite his snarling contempt for dogs, children and women.

The characterization he portrayed in films and on radio was so strong it became generally identified with Fields himself. It was maintained by the movie-studio publicity departments at Fields’s studios (Paramount and Universal) and further established by Robert Lewis Taylor’s 1949 biography W.C. Fields, His Follies and Fortunes. Beginning in 1973, with the publication of Fields’s letters, photos, and personal notes in grandson Ronald Fields’s book W.C. Fields by Himself, it has been shown that Fields was married (and subsequently estranged from his wife), and he financially supported their son and loved his grandchildren.

However, Madge Evans, a friend and actress, told a visitor in 1972 that Fields so deeply resented intrusions on his privacy by curious tourists walking up the driveway to his Los Angeles home that he would hide in the shrubs by his house and fire BB pellets at the trespassers’ legs. Several years later Groucho Marx told a similar story on his live performance album, An Evening with Marx.

Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (1941) is a tour de force of W.C. Fields’ off-beat humor, double-takes, broad comedy and priceless lines and sketches. The screenplay by John T. Noville and Prescott Chaplin was based upon Fields’ own original material (under nom de plume Otis Criblecoblis).

The film is an absurd, irrational, surrealistic, innovative and wacky film with no real plot - it was cut so severely that it appears to be an erratic hodge-podge, full of holes and loose ends without cohesion and continuity. Interesting P.S. I was visiting the Sirius radio studio the other day in Manhattan, doing a little something for the WowOwow website with Marlo Thomas and Gloria Steinem. In one of the green rooms (which was actually gray, of course) there was an oversize Rolling Stone cover on the wall, trumpeting a singer named Adele. Two of the very smart young women from WoW, also there, Hilary Black and Emily Gallagher, assured me that Beyonce and Gaga were nothing compared to Adele!

This amused me, because the New Yorker article does mention Adele: “Her career is likely to be long because she is selling to the demographic that decides American elections: Middle-aged moms who don’t know how to pirate music and will drive to Starbucks when they need to buy it.”

Writer Frere-Jones perhaps underestimates Adele’s appeal.

Flynn’s prowess with women was so infamous that the expression “In like Flynn” became a common phrase used to describe the ease with which a man might conquer a woman. In fact, after a life rocked by success and scandal, Errol Flynn died under dubious circumstances, supposedly while having sex with a woman.

Of all the actors flicking swords to entertain movie audiences, Flynn was one of the best at making his point. A natural athlete and a rugged outdoorsman, Flynn had his own share of adventures before making Hollywood his playground.

Flynn sailed the seas for seven months in and around Australia and even managed a tobacco plantation in New Guinea. His experiences in life helped to form the onscreen chemistry that made audiences love him.

There was an native intelligence behind all the screen bonhomie and perhaps even a self-deprecating humor. Check out Flynn’s late-career performance as the dissipated Mike Campbell in The Sun Also Rises (1957). In many ways, it’s a comment on the actor’s life.

Flynn’s career undoubtedly suffered from his excessive drinking and high life style. Barely a dozen years after capturing movie audiences with his dashing portrayal in Captain Blood (1935), the actor struggled to fit the image of the handsome, dashing adventurer, struggling with weight and bloating from drink. His later adventure films pale in comparison to the early efforts, yet, the magic still survives. Even as late as 1953 in The Master of Ballantrae, Flynn’s rascally charm and athleticism provided enough sparks to light up the Robert Louis Stevenson story.

Maybe it wasn’t the same Flynn that drew a quick six gun in Dodge City, but there was still a glimmer of dash and romance in his step. Too Much Too Soon (1958) was Flynn’s last Hollywood film. Ironically, he played John Barrymore in this biopic, his old drinking buddy, who, like Flynn, lived a rapacious life satisfying his hunger for women and wine. Lamentably, there was one more film left in Flynn called Cuban Rebel Girls released in 1959, a sad closing to a thrilling career.

Elliot Handler, the man behind Hot Wheels, passes away at 95 Any boy that has spent an inordinate time of their childhood playing with Hot Wheels mini cars should owe a ton of gratitude to the man that made it all possible, Elliot Handler.

We know that we’ve played with over hundreds of these cars so it is with great sadness that we bring the unfortunate news that Handler just passed away last Thursday from heart failure. He was 95 years old.

Despite his passing, Handler left an indelible mark on our childhood with some even stretching their fascination for Hot Wheels all the way into their adult lives. The man became famous for introducing die-cast toy cars that can be played around by young boys the same way his other idea — Barbie — did for young girls all over the world.

Fields’s screen character was often fond of alcohol, and this trait has become part of the Fields legend. In his younger days as a juggler, Fields himself never drank, because he didn’t want to impair his functions while performing. The loneliness of his constant touring and traveling, however, compelled Fields to keep liquor on hand for fellow performers, so he could invite them to his dressing room for companionship and cocktails. Only then did Fields cultivate a fondness for alcohol.

Fields expressed his feelings to Gloria Jean (playing his niece) in Never Give a Sucker an Even Break: “I was in love with a beautiful blonde once, dear. She drove me to drink. That’s the one thing I am indebted to her for.” Equally memorable was a line in the 1940 film “My Little Chickadee”: “Once, in the wilds of Afghanistan, I lost my corkscrew...and we were forced to live on nothing but food and water for days!” The oft-repeated anecdote that Fields once claimed he never drank water “because fish fornicate in it” is unsubstantiated.

On movie sets, Fields kept handy a vacuum flask of mixed martinis, which he referred to as his “pineapple juice”. One day a prankster switched the contents of the flask, filling it with actual pineapple juice. Upon discovering the prank, Fields was heard to yell, “Who put pineapple juice in my pineapple juice?!” (A variation of the story substitutes “lemonade”. However, a young Phil Silvers, who appeared with Fields in Tales of Manhattan, witnessed a similar incident on the set; in his 1973 autobiography This Laugh Is on Me, Silvers confirms that “pineapple juice”, not “lemonade”, was the euphemism Fields employed.)

In 1936 Fields became gravely ill, his health worsened by his heavy drinking. Fields’s film series came to a halt while he recovered; he made one last film for Paramount, The Big Broadcast of 1938. The comedian’s troublesome behavior kept other producers away, and Fields was professionally idle until he made his debut on radio. By then Fields was very sick and suffering from delirium tremens.

Sports News Citizen Kane (1941), Directed by Orson Welles

A masterpiece — a movie milestone. Considered by most film critics as the greatest, or one of the top ten films ever made. It rewrote the rules of Hollywood cinema, setting Hollywood on its ear when first released. The film was co-written, directed, and starred in by 25-year old radio star Orson Welles in his first film effort and on a bare-bones budget. It is famous for its innovative cinematic techniques, quick cuts, use of shadows to intensify the drama, limited close-ups when they were in style, deep-focus photography, and dissolves. Told in flashbacks with a multi-viewpoint script, the story is the portrait of the public and private life of a newspaper publisher, loosely based on (and paralleling) the life of William Randolph Hearst. The last dying word of newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), the mysterious “Rosebud,” sends reporter Jerry Thompson (William Alland) on a search for the meaning of the word and an understanding of the publishing giant’s life. Kane builds a publishing empire but ends up undone by his own excesses and obsessions.

The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941)

A faithful adaptation of Stephen Vincent Benet’s story. Set in 19th century New Hampshire, a kind-hearted New England farmer Jabez Stone (James Craig) is induced by the devil, Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston) to sell his soul. In return, he will receive gold and “all that money can buy.”

After seven years of luck and with time running out, as he becomes increasingly coldblooded and heartless, Stone wants to end the deal, so he hires the famous eloquent orator and lawyer Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) to plead his case and win back his soul. In the dramatic Hell’s courtroom scene, Webster argues the case in front of a jury of damned souls from hell.

Dyan Cannon gets the luv on — and remembers Cary Grant

“When ca-ca hits the fan, I’ve learned how to pick myself up and make lemonade out of that ca-ca!”

That’s Dyan Cannon, with whom I had a fast, uplifting chat last week.

Dyan was one of the great figures of movies back in the late ‘60s through a good deal of the ‘80s. With her delectably oversize features and energy to burn, Dyan gave her all to superior material and lifted mediocre fare considerably. She was nominated for best supporting actress Oscars twice — for 1969’s “Bob & Carol & Ted and Alice” and again in 1978 in Warren Beatty’s “Heaven Can Wait.” She was memorable in “Such Good Friends,” “Child Under a Leaf,” “The Last of Sheila,” Deathtrap” and “Author! Author!” Dyan was also nominated for an Oscar as a filmmaker, in 1976, for the live-action short “Number One,” which she wrote, directed, produced and also starred in.

More recent generations recall her stint on TV’s “Ally McBeal.”

But Dyan wasn’t calling to chat about her film career. She has just finished a book, “Dear Cary,” which will tell of her short, fabulous but fraught marriage to Hollywood’s great matinee idol, Cary Grant.

Dyan has waited a long time to tell her story. She and Grant married in 1965 and were divorced three years later. But the fallout, especially surrounding their daughter, Jennifer, dragged on for years. Why did she wait so long? “I wasn’t ready. I really wasn’t. It took me a long time to heal. This book has taken five years to write. And even though I thought I had healed, I found there were still areas to be explored.

“You know, when Jackie Onassis was the editor at Doubleday, we met many times. She was always gently — that was her way — very gently, trying to persuade me to write my tale. I just couldn’t. It was so raw, still.

“A week after Cary died, Swifty Lazar called me and said, “Come on, it’s time!” God bless, Swifty, but I certainly wasn’t going to do it then.”

The book isn’t yet available for an advance peek, and Dyan herself didn’t seem to want to tell much of what was in the book — no dishing her ex.

Rather, she seemed very committed and sure that she has written something that will help “Everybody, women and men, in a relationship where you think only of the other partner, only how to please them, make them happy. You leave yourself naked and empty. It is a very long road back. That’s my story.

“And it’s a very simple story — give all, lose all. It was a great romance that went south. It broke down. I healed myself and put the stars back in my eyes.”

Dyan is full of philosophical musings, and invigoratingly optimistic, she is romantic without ever speaking of romance.

Of her famous love, she would only say, gently, “He was one in a billion. Really, one in a billion.”

Aside from promoting her book, Dyan’s great project, her genuine “labor of love,” is something called “Get Your Luv On!” The actress has pulled this bimonthly gathering together on the CBS Studio lot. It’s a great big cozy happening where people — “all people, men, women, gay, straight, from 18 to 80” — Dyan emphasizes — are welcome to come and discuss love “in all its wonderful, challenging, terrible hopeful aspects.”

Dyan says, “It’s not that I help people and their relationships. They all help each other, by simply being together in this atmosphere. I hate to use a cliche but — it’s a beautiful thing.”

(Go to your computer to find out more about “Get Your Luv On!”) I would have liked to really dig into the nuts and bolts of Dyan’s book, but she seemed tentative about going too far right now. She wanted me to have an essence. And an essence from Dyan Cannon is better than the kit n’ caboodle from most other stars.

Just before we hung up, I mentioned I’d been having trouble sleeping. Dyan was electric with concern and information. “I have the remedy — at least it works for so many I’ve shared it with.

It’s simple. Get some Epsom salts.

Just before bed, the hottest bath you can stand. Be generous with the salts.

Verrrry generous. Then soak. Just soak.

All the strain of the day will just melt away and you’ll sleep like a baby. Try, it, please, Liz! Oh, and a prayer helps too.”

I don’t know if I am ready for “the hottest bath I can stand.” But I love that Dyan took the time to advise me.

She’s a doll. And I can’t wait to read “Dear Cary.”

The Legacy of Amy Winehouse

— in the wake of the horror in Norway, and the mindblowing absurdity of Washington “politics.” To watch our elected officials pout and posture and point fingers like teenage girls in a high school hallway, while the country is about to default is mind-boggling. The worst — and no surprise — was presidential aspirant Tim Pawlenty who blasted President Obama for not having a “plan” and then dared him to come out of the White House and present one. “He’s a coward. He’s a chicken!” Pawlenty puffed. In Pawlenty’s case, the political mudslinging devolved from high school to fourth grade.

She joins an unfortunate club of singers who led troubled lives, some who struggled with drugs, and died at age 27.

“I’m not a great singer. People are very throwaway with their words these days. If someone comes out and they’ve got hoop earrings and a big bum, it’s like ‘She’s a diva!’ You have to earn these things. Not from other people, from yourself. You have to earn your own respect.”

This is from Amy Winehouse who actually was a great singer, dead at 27 after she had earned five Grammys.

She had been briefly celebrated as a major musical star, on the cusp of a long and fruitful career. The legendary Tony Bennett admired her. She might have changed the face and sound of popular music had she lived long enough. As it is, she left one amazing album, “Back to Black” and a few recordings to be released as her “last album, sometime in the future.

Of all the self-destructive music stars that have left the stage at the age of 27 — Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain — Amy’s catalogue is the briefest. And that might be the greatest tragedy, as it seems the tragedy of her death simply could not have been avoided.

Barry Bonds, on the edge of Cooperstown

arry Bonds turned 47 over the weekend, actually on the same day that Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven, and Pat Gillick were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Next year, Bonds himself will be eligible, for the first time, for election to the Hall.

He won’t get in, of course. Not on the first try.

Maybe he’ll be elected eventually. I hope so, though I don’t like Barry Bonds, and I do believe he cheated to get an unfair advantage. But I also believe he’s the best player in many decades, at least since Henry Aaron, maybe the best since Babe Ruth. A Hall of Fame that doesn’t recognize Bonds isn’t serving its mission. I feel the same way about Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, but that’s a separate issue.

Bonds’ legacy, even apart from his place in the game’s steroid lore, is unique. He is the all-time record-holder in walks, intentional walks, and home runs. He holds single-season records in all the same

categories, as well as on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He won 8 Gold Gloves, 12 Silver Sluggers, and 7 National League MVP Awards. He led the NL at various times in batting average, onbase percentage, slugging percentage, runs, RBI, home runs, total bases, walks, and intentional walks.

He scored and drove in 100 runs 12 times each, hit .300 11 times, hit 40 HR eight times, stole 20 bases 12 times, walked 100 times in 14 seasons, and had an OPS over 1.000 every year from 1992-2005.

Even before his incredible cream-and-clear-fueled run in the 2000s — when Bonds was so dominant as to make a mockery of the game, drawing record numbers of intentional walks — Barry was by far the greatest player of the 1990s. He didn’t achieve the same peaks of stardom as Ken Griffey, Jr., or Mark McGwire, and jealousy reportedly played a role in his later decision to use performance-enhancing drugs. This isn’t even a matter of opinion. It’s a fact. If we’re going to deny that Bonds was objectively better than Junior, then it’s a valid opinion that Bob Uecker was the greatest catcher of all time.

From 1990-99, Bonds and Griffey both hit .302.

Bonds hit 361 homers, Griffey 382. Basically the same, right? No. Griffey had 500 more at-bats, because Bonds had 450 more walks. Bonds’ OBP during the decade was .434, compared to .384 for Griffey.

Barry actually hit more home runs per AB (one every 13.6 AB) than Junior did (every 14.1). Bonds slugged .602 in the ‘90s, Griffey .581. From 1990-99 — before the PEDs and 73 home runs — Bonds had an OPS of 1.036, about 70 points better than Griffey’s .965.

The NFL and players already had let the world know they worked out their differences. On Tuesday, they formally gave word of the settlement agreement to a pair of federal judges overseeing three pending court cases.

In separate conference calls Tuesday, lawyers for both sides in pro football’s labor dispute spoke to U.S. District Judges Susan Richard Nelson and David Doty to say they’ve settled, contingent on a new collective bargaining agreement being finished by Aug. 4.

The leadership of the NFL Players Association voted unanimously Monday to agree to a deal to end the 4 1/2 -month lockout. Owners OK’d an agreement last week.

Nelson was the judge in the federal class-action antitrust lawsuit filed by Tom Brady(notes) and nine other players March 11, the day that federally 9.5 in. mediated negotiations in Washington

broke down, allowing the old CBA to expire. The NFLPA said it was dissolving the union and becoming a trade association, which allowed players to sue under antitrust law.

Now, as part of Monday’s deal, the NFLPA will re-establish the union this week. The sides then will negotiate areas that only a union can bargain in a CBA, including drug testing, player discipline and disability and pension programs.

The pact requires that those issues be resolved and a full CBA be done by Aug. 4; no one involved believes that will be a problem.

Doty has oversight for the “lockout insurance” case and a separate collusion claim by players.

On March 1, Doty ruled that the NFL failed to maximize TV revenues for the players, essentially leaving money on the table for the last two years to gain leverage in the labor fight. At a hearing in May, the players asked Doty to make $4 billion in disputed broadcast revenue off-limits to owners; the NFLPA also asked him to award players more than $700 million

Tiger’s down, but not out

Tiger Woods is finally moving into this $54.5 million home on Jupiter Island. (Deborah Silver - Treasure Coast News) Tiger Woods is on the move and in the news once again — and once again it has nothing to do with golf.

While Woods continues to recover from knee and ankle injuries that have kept him off the course most of the year, he’s getting closer to moving into his $54.5 million, 12-acre home on Jupiter Island.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Woods’ move is expected to follow another relocation by his exwife, Elin Nordegren, and their two children. Nordegren is said to soon be moving into a $12.2 million beacfront home of her own in Palm Beach County.

Another example of dishonorable intention is military personnel engaging in “contract marriages” where military personnel and their significant others can raise the amount of earnings they receive and also the amount of housing allowances provided if there are more than one per household. The divorce rate in the military today is at an all-time high which is costing the government and this country more money than we could ever imagine.
