In a day when sterile, flat, computer-generated art has become the norm, it’s refreshing to see an artist like Kerne Erickson who can work his way from a well composed pencil drawing, through transparent layers of under painting, building depth and tonality until finally he adds the finishing touches that bring the work of art into focus. His work is a perfect blend of traditional technique and modern painting mediums.

Commentary
the stossel solution By Cal Thomas
In order to get the correct answer to anything, one must ask the right question. That is what former ABC News and current Fox News TV host John Stossel does on his weekly program. If ever there was “must see-TV,” this is it. Stossel’s show on Saturday, June 30 was a classic. It was called “Government, Incorporated” and focused on what private industry can do less expensively and more efficiently than government. After watching it, I wondered why this isn’t happening. Why does inefficient, costly and unresponsive government continue to grow while the people and companies that could do the work much better are regulated and taxed to death? In part it’s because politicians speak only in poll-tested sound bites and rarely focus on what works. It isn’t as if we don’t have a history that can teach us. We know what works, but politicians too often prefer the issue to the solution. That’s where Stossel comes in. At the top of the program Stossel established the underlying foundation of his libertarian philosophy when it comes to government vs. private industry: .”.. even though the private sector is more efficient, politicians and bureaucrats
usually won’t let go. They want their tentacles on everything. And the public is usually happy to go along, because we’re imprinted to believe the specialists in Washington and state capitals know better. They’re from the government. They’re here to help. And they’re so smart.” One of his guests was Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. Forget for a moment that Daniels is a Republican. Focus on his accomplishments. “You were $78 million in debt,” Stossel said during the program. “Now you have a $1.5 billion surplus.” In a controversial decision, Indiana leaders leased a 157-mile toll road to foreign investors. “In exchange,” writes Ryan Holeywell of Governing. com, “for a $3.8 billion, lump-sum payment, the investors would get to keep toll road revenue for 75 years... a windfall for Indiana, with little downside to taxpayers.” Next year, Daniels announced recently, his state’s surplus will be at least $2 billion. Taxpayers can expect a credit on their 2013 taxes. Daniels said he invokes what he calls “the Yellow Pages test. If it’s in there, then conceivably government shouldn’t be doing it itself.” And the result? “The result,” said Daniels, “is we’re repairing bridges,
building roads. We’re the only state with a building boom in infrastructure and it didn’t cost the taxpayers a nickel.” Re-read that last sentence and then ask yourself why the federal government still sees itself as the primary builder of roads and bridges when it costs more and delivers less. This is a real solution to a nagging problem. Why isn’t it more widely embraced? Refer to Stossel’s previous answer about government: “They want their tentacles on everything.” They’re about power. The rest of the country wants results, which they must have in order for their businesses to survive and prosper. Amtrak was another subject addressed on the program. For 40 years, the rail service has been subsidized by government, but it still loses money, lots of it. The guest was Randal O’Toole who specializes in transportation for the CATO Institute. O’Toole noted that when government started subsidizing Amtrak, rail fares were lower than airfares. Now it’s the reverse. Some routes, like New Orleans to Los Angeles, lose money, but because politicians want trains running through their states and districts, the money keeps flowing in from Washington. Contrast this with freight trains,
O’Toole says, which once were regulated by the government and are now competitive in the private market. Costs, he says, have gone down for freight. If results and not political outcomes or rehearsed sound bites become the primary objective in our political discourse, it’s difficult to refute the arguments coming from Stossel’s show. Instead of focusing on the familiar talking points from politicians, John Stossel’s program repeatedly demonstrates that the way to a healthier economy and a stronger government is through the private sector, not government. It doesn’t require a surgical procedure to remove that “imprint” that government can do it better; just a different way of thinking.

Commander in chief Respect And Obey
Active duty military must obey the commanderin-chief, President Obama, and show respect for the office. I understand that there are different standards for freedom of speech Richard Matz applicable for active duty military and for civilians. As a civilian, I also have respect for the office of the president. The Military Press in no way is the official voice of the armed services and we do not advocate the denigration or disrespect of the commander-in-chief or the office he represents. There was an incident recently involving the use of Facebook by an active duty Marine to broadcast his disdain for the president. He was found guilty of disobeying the rules governing military personnel and was discharged. I get it. Previous Military Press articles written by me, the publisher, have been very critical of President Obama and his administration. I have been accused of being a Republican and of trying to influence military men, women and families to vote Republican. My father was a Democrat and voted for the party until his death. He belonged to and was president of the newspaper union at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At one time, I registered and voted for Democratic candidates. I voted for Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, but after the Jimmy Carter fiasco, I switched parties. I admire President Reagan for what he did for our country and what he did for military men, women and their families. As an American, I will always vote,
but will not do so for any candidate from any party that does not represent his or her constituents or who is controlled by lobbyists, corporations or individuals who use their money to buy influence. Ninety-five percent of the emails I receive support my beliefs. I respect the other 5% who are critical of me and encourage them to keep sending e-mails for publication in the newspaper. I appreciate when they give their name in the e-mail and with permission will publish their opinion in the paper.* I have one critic in particular that jousts with me on a continuous and monotonous basis regarding my thought on Obama. He picks apart every sentence and every word that I use and interprets my opinions to suit himself. I’ve asked him to submit his opinions for publication but he has refused. I think he now has a new adversary in the San Diego Union-Tribune as in Sunday’s edition, it listed the five worst presidents ever; President Obama was listed as the worst. They also listed Jimmy Carter, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Richard Nixon. I think G.W. Bush should have been on the list. When President Clinton left office, this country had a surplus of money. What in the world has happened since to put this country so deeply in debt. I will do my homework and try, to the best of my ability, to point out the mistakes made by the previous administrations to put us so deeply in debt and give my opinions as to how we can restore the financial stability of our country. Special Ops officers form PAC to oppose Obama By Stephen Dinan, The Washington Times
Retired special operations officers from the U.S. military have organized their own political action committee designed to highlight what they see as unforgivably security leaks by President Obama and his team. Named Special Operations Speaks (SOS) PAC and led by three former officers with special operations experience, the group is leading a petition drive to try to raise the profile of recent stories blaming Mr. Obama for intelligence leaks. “Let me lay it on the line: Barack Obama’s loose lips are doing worse than sinking ships – they’re putting our entire nation at risk,” the PAC said in an email trying to raise money to run ads attacking Mr. Obama. The move is reminiscent of 2004, when a group of Vietnam war veterans named the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth questioned then-Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry’s own war record. This new group of veterans argues that Mr. Obama has shown reckless disregard for secrecy, first by rushing “to get in front of the cameras” after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and then more recently with news reports about drone assassinations and U.S. cyberattacks, which appeared to be based on classified information. This week GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney called for a special counsel to investigate those leaks, and the Democratic chairwoman of the Senate intelligence committee said she believed some of the leaks came directly from the White House — though a day later she retracted that statement. The White House has vehemently denied that any of the president’s aides leaked classified information, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. has named two U.S. attorneys to conduct an internal investigation into the leaks. Mr. Romney and Republicans want an independent special counsel instead, saying he or she would have more freedom.

Supporting Our Troops
Kellie Pickler Salutes Military Like many country artists, Kellie Pickler is a long time supporter of U.S. troops and has made multiple USO overseas visits performing for them. Kellie is currently gearing up for her fifth USO tour, as she notes on Twitter. And in another show of support for the military, she also performed Tuesday night during a special military tribute show at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The show also featured Alan Jackson, Rascal Flatts, Montgomery Gentry, Ronnie Milsap, Mark Wills, and John Conlee. Clips from the evening (performances and redcarpet arrivals) are scheduled to be broadcast this Saturday on Great American Country at 9pm ET/8pm CT. The show is the premiere episode of a new series that GAC calls Noteworthy at the Opry. And with the Memorial Day weekend coming right up, she had a few thoughts (courtesy of Sony Nashville) on what the day means to her. “I know Memorial Day weekend is such a special time to celebrate with your friends and your family and veterans and people that are still serving in the military,” says Kellie. And it’s really just about celebrating our freedom and celebrating how we got freedom. It didn’t come free, that’s for sure.” She also explains why Memorial Day is such and important time and why we should not miss an opportunity to say “thank you.” “Anytime I see someone in the airport or at the grocery store or anywhere and they’re in uniform, it really means a lot just to go up and say ‘thank you.’ I get asked all the time, ‘Well, you know, I don’t know how to…you know, I can’t go to Afghanistan, and I don’t…what can I do?’ And it’s small things like saying ‘thank you’ that make the biggest difference because it shows appreciation, and it shows that you respect what they’re doin’.” “Regardless if you agree or disagree with what’s goin’ on, it’s wrong to not say ‘thank you’ and give ‘em a hug and let ‘em know that you appreciate what they’re doin’.”

SCANTILY CLAD WOMEN
Every now and then, the Military Press receives a complaint or two regarding the state of dress (or undress) of the women on the cover or inside pages. These complaints are for different reasons but are all about the same thing. The Military Press does not feel showing pin-ups (from history or modern day) reveals any more of a woman’s body than does an ad for womens bras and underpants. We haven’t checked with any local department stores to see if they get complaints about their ads. We doubt they do. Pin-up girls from World War II were beautiful actresses and models. The GIs at home and on the battlefield considered the pin-ups a tremendous morale builder. The pin-up posters were not condemned by high command or the good people at home. On the cover of our July 15 issue, we featured the face of a young lady who is competing in the Olympics and representing the United States. On our July 1 cover, we featured modern day pin-up girls. We received complaints that the covers were inappropriate. Come on now. Get real. Why not complain about the burning and trampling of the American flag? Or the elimination of the word “God” from every picture and piece of literature? Or letting illegals stay in our country and steal our tax dollars? What about all the crooked politicians and lobbyists? We know we can’t please everyone every time but perhaps this is a battle low on the priority list.

MMA By Art Garcia Jr.
MMA Report : Strikeforce returns to San Diego Championship mixed martial arts returns to San Diego on August 18 as ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey makes the first title defense of her Strikeforce Bantamweight crown against former champion Sara Kaufman at the Valley View Casino Center Sporting a professional record of 5-0, none of Rousey’s opponents have made it past the first round. After winning a bronze medal in Judo at the 2008 Olympics, Rousey, 25, turned pro and wasted little time climbing to the top of women’s MMA by submitting all five of her opponents via arm bar. Her most impressive win to date occurred last December in San Diego when she stripped the belt away from then champion Meisha Tate on the undercard of Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal. In what would be the longest bout of her professional MMA career, Rousey submitted Tate at 4:27 of the first round. With a record of 20-5, Kaufman is looking to regain the bantamweight title she relinquished to Marlos Coenen in 2009. With 15 knockouts to her credit, Kaufman is currently riding a three-fight win streak since losing her title. If she lands a few hard shots early and can keep the fight on her feet without being taken down to the mat, Kaufman has a chance to be the only fighter to take Rousey past the first round. “Sara Kaufman is the best striker that I’ve fought yet,” Rousey said. “She’s the last person to beat Meisha Tate (prior to Rousey’s victory last December) and she handled her pretty perfectly where she nullified her (Tate’s) grappling pretty much. “It will be a very interesting style matchup for me. It’s going to be my most difficult fight to date definitely. So I’m welcoming a different challenge with that.” If she’s victorious over Kaufman, look for Rousey’s next title defense to be

against the winner between Tate and Julie Kedzie, who are fighting on the undercard earlier in the evening. As for the highly anticipated fight against former Strikeforce featherweight champion Christiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos, the earliest that can happen is February 2013 after Santos serves her year-long suspension for testing positive for steroids in December 2012. “I have absolutely no respect for anyone who cheats, you know?” Rousey said about the suspension. “Especially in a sport like MMA where it’s not like if you cheat and take steroids and hit a baseball farther (than another player) then nobody’s harmed. But if you cheat and take steroids then try and punch someone in the face, that person’s going to have actual injuries and get really hurt and (possibly) die. “This is serious – I think its reckless endangerment for anyone to take steroids and do MMA.” Ringside: When asked if she would give Cyborg an immediate shot at the title once she’s eligible or if she would make Cyborg have to fight her way back into contention, Rousey replied: “I love that you’re assuming that I’m going to defend my title successfully in August. But in the meantime, this fight (with Kaufman) has my full attention. Of course, meeting Cyborg was my emphasis when I started and it’s going to happen – but right now Sarah Kaufman has my full attention.”

The art of Kerne erickson
For the past 30 years Kerne Erickson has worked as a full-time artist, primarily producing freelance commissioned art and landscape paintings. His home and studio are located in Orange County near the edge of the vast O’Neill cattle ranch, with classic rolling California foothills and the distinct ridgeline of Saddleback Mountain in the background. To the south a few miles is Trestles beach, one of the premier surf spots in California. In this home he and his wife, Suzanne, raised their two children, Daniel and Anna. Erickson is soft spoken and friendly but prefers to work on his art with no one else around. The music he listens to while working ranges widely from British Isles folk music to innovative jazz. When it comes to art, Erickson is extremely dedicated to his chosen vocation. He spends time nearly every day of his life producing art. Some days he works in the studio from sketches or photographs; other days he packs up his painting supplies and goes out on location to paint while viewing the subject. Both methods of working are equally important and interesting to him. When research is required for a project, he often goes deep, reading everything he can find on the subject in books, old magazines, vintage brochures and on the Internet. If human figures are to be included in an artwork, he often finds a model and has them pose for sketches.
Greg Young Publishing Greg’s love of fine art came about early in his life, deriving from family travel through many of the finest museums in the world. Spending much of that time in Hawaii. Greg began his aifinity for the local culture and artwork of the islands. After college he began building his fine art collection, eventually opening a gallery in Santa Barbara, California. In 1991 Greg’s business evolved into what is now called Greg Young Publishing, a company dedicated to fine art posters featuring a number of exclusive artists and popular subjects. As his collection of early travel art began to grow, Greg ‘ began searching for the perfect artist to begin a new series of retro -style, Hawaiian and travel-related artwork. Greg was introduced to artist Kerne Eridson in 1999, and he got an immediate sense that Kerne was just the right artist to produce his new series. Kerne brought his own personal style to the mix. and the result was history. Since the launch of the first collection. Erickson’s name and images have be lauded and coveted by travel art aficionados, who have made the prints best sellers in the fine art poster industry. In early 2006. Greg Young Publishing published Kerne Ericksons debut. self-titled book. Visit: GregYoungPublishing.com for more information.

On Wednesday, July 25, 2012, Felix Baumgartner completed the final milestone remaining before he attempts to achieve his dream of becoming the first person to break the speed of sound in freefall. According to preliminary data, his test jump from a 30 story tall helium balloon from an altitude of over 96,640 feet, saw Felix execute a 3 minute, 48 second freefall jump reaching speeds of 536 mph. Felix landed in a desert area of New Mexico about a 15-minute helicopter ride from his launch site at Roswell International Air Center.

As the ecstatic team gathered in Mission Control to welcome his return, technical project director Art Thompson commented: “It’s hard not to get emotional about today. We are just so glad to have Felix back on the ground after a long week with significant weather challenges. The crew did a great job.” The test launch was twice delayed due to thunderstorms, wind and rain. But the team of aerospace experts was never discouraged, well aware that even Space Shuttle launches sometimes faced several days of postponement. Felix’s successful test is proof that patience pays off. This successful test, with a balloon over four times as large as the one that carried the pilot at the first test flight in March, delivered new insights for the progress of the project and also new research data for the benefit of aerospace research. “It was a rough couple of days and an exhausting endeavor. I am now really excited. It has always been a dream of mine. Only one more step to go,” Baumgartner said after the successful landing. Pending official data review and confirmation, the leap from over 96,640 feet takes Felix past Russia’s Yevgeny Andreyev (83,523 feet) to make him only the second man to have successfully completed a jump from such an altitude. His planned freefall from 120,000 feet would finally break the record of 102,800 feet set 52 years ago by the only man who has jumped from a higher altitude, Felix’s mentor Joe Kittinger. Since the horrific events of September 11, 2001, the United States Army has been engaged continuously in combat operations across the globe. Army Special Forces, employed in the Foreign Internal Defense mode, have often been the nation’s weapon of choice against terror, working “by, with and through,” a partner nation’s security forces. Perhaps due to the nature of Special Forces operations, and the “quiet professionals” themselves, realistic and first person accounts of Army SF operations during the past ten years have not been plentiful, or particularly well written. The recently published Lions of Kandahar, by U.S. Army Special Forces officer Rusty Bradley and journalist Kevin Maurer, has now broken this paradigm. The two authors have crafted a superb work which gives the reader a thorough understanding of SF operations masterfully executed in Afghanistan by the basic building block of the branch, the Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha (SFODA). Commonly known as the “A Team,” these small, highly trained 12-man units are often little understood, or appreciated. This book should help to correct any misunderstanding. Lions of Kandahar begins with a dramatic rendition of a “Troops in Contact,” engagement and the subsequent sickening realization that the team was surrounded by hundreds of insurgents, and low on ammunition. After this, the authors flash back and provide a contextual background and understanding of the soldiers and detachment pre-mission training for the readers, explaining how all came to find themselves in such desperate straits one hot, dusty day in the south of Afghanistan. By the time Captain Rusty Bradley and the men of SFODA 331 of 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) arrived at Kandahar Airfield in August of 2006, the security situation in Southern Afghanistan had reached a critical period for US and NATO forces. A growing sense of unease permeated Kandahar as indications abounded of a major enemy resurgence and impending offensive in their traditional southern stronghold. No stranger to OEF, Bradley was beginning his third consecutive tour of combat duty in the nation. Bradley’s ODA, along with two other detachments, were chosen to support the ambitious Canadian-led NATO offensive Operation Medusa, intended to clear insurgent dominated provinces in the south. Conducting an epic “Lawrence of Arabia” like 300 kilometer vehicular movement across the forbidding Red Desert, the small SF force was to establish blocking positions in support of friendly columns driving from the north. As the offensive stalled, all three detachments became decisively engaged in one of the most intense and sustained OEF combat operations to date. It was a literal fight for life against a well armed and determined enemy. Lions of Kandahar is ultimately an insider’s account of the epic fight in and around the Panjwayi Sperwan Ghar hill mass over a six day period from 05 to 10 September 2006. Nicknamed by Army SF participants “the greatest battle no one ever heard of,” the fighting was not against hit and run guerrillas but intense ground combat against an opponent who vigorously defended ground and attacked. Over a period of six days Bradley and the SF “long beards” assaulted and seized a fortified position, and repelled two counterattacks and two direct assaults, while killing or wounding an estimated 800 plus insurgents to include 8 confirmed Taliban commanders. Their actions most likely prevented the collapse of the NATO offensive that fall. This book is a tightly written, fast paced first person account of the war in Afghanistan as fought by one remarkable Army Special Forces A-Team. Both authors, with extensive combat and embed experience, have crafted a ripping good read that is entertaining and authentic. The 280 page work is well laid out and user friendly for readers unfamiliar with Special Forces, and includes a glossary, 3 maps and 23 black and white photos which are extremely helpful in helping one understand the deadly close in combat of Spewan Ghar. One minor fault is that the book does not have either notes or an appendix, which military historians of the future will lament. In the end, Bradley and Maurer accomplish what they have set out to do; that is, ensure the men who fought, bled and won at the Battle of Sperwan Ghar are never forgotten. Copyright © 2012 Bob Seals. Aspire Center story should inspire and caution By Rick Rogers Host of Front & Center: Military Talk Radio The big news recently for San Diego County veterans was both expected and relieving. The Aspire Center, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ proposed 40-bed medical facility in Old Town, finally won approval. Local veterans suffering mental and emotional wounds after their service will finally have a place of their own to recuperate under the best care available. That San Diego County, home to the most Afghanistan and Iraq war vets in the country, waited a decade for such a center is a real puzzler. But at least there’s one on the way. On Tuesday the San Diego City Council unanimously approved the conditional use permit allowing the $30 million Aspire Center to move forward. Had countervailing forces succeeded, the San Diego VA Healthcare System would’ve lost crucial VA funding and the Aspire Center would’ve been setback at least 18 months. The decision did not surprise. The
This former Thomas Jefferson Law School site is the proposed address for a new $30 million VA center to help homeless Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. San Diego City Council had signaled its intention to approve the center last month at a standing-room-only meeting packed with Aspire Center backers. Elected council members had little choice but to vote for the much-needed project. To do otherwise would’ve risked political doom in such a promilitary town on such a hot topic. To the Council I offer a polite golf clap. But the standing ovation goes to the veterans and their advocates who showed what’s possible when people rally behind an important issue and
stand toe to toe with a bully and tell him where to go. Once the substantial forces of the San Diego County veteran community were fully engaged – and enraged – it was no contest. That’s what Old Town Academy Charter School officials found while stopping at little in attempts to derail the Aspire Center. Old Town Academy shouldn’t be faulted for opposing the Aspire Center. Who really wants struggling veterans moving in across the street? Neither is stirring up public sentiment or seeking political redress necessarily
wrong. And their security concerns were altogether fitting. But what they did went well beyond what was prudent, civil or decent. Their public disrespect of veterans and their reliance on fear mongering instead of facts undid them and painted them as nothing more than elitists and NIMBYs. With no history of service themselves, they never let irony stop them from impugning the character of those willing to do a job they were not. Their suggestion that Aspire Center veterans would harbor sexual or violent predators waiting to pounce on Old Town Academy school children would be comic if not for the stakes. Well now all that is all sorted out. Old Town Academy and the VA have come to a living arrangement. Let’s move on without forgetting. All it takes for the Old Towns of the world to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Rick Rogers has covered defense and veterans issues for nearly 30 years. Body armor for women
The U.S. military is developing “Xena: Warrior Princess”-style body armor for women that it hopes will give them greater protection on the battlefield, with more curves in the chest and hips. It is a considerable engineering challenge to make body armor that better fits the bodies of female troops, officials acknowledge, and it may be years in the making. In the meantime, Army engineers are forging ahead with improvements that they hope will provide much-needed changes after a decade of women serving on the front lines of an unpredictable battlefield.

One million push-ups in one year
What started as a New Year’s Resolution for Sgt. Enrique Trevino — to complete one million push-ups in one year — is now a mission to raise awareness and funds for wounded warriors. It’s a lofty ambition. In order to reach one million push-ups by Jan. 1, 2013, Trevino must complete an average of 2,732 push-ups a day, but he’s determined to reach his goal. “About a week into it, I kinda told myself instead of me just doing this for myself, I wanna benefit my brothers and sisters who’ve been injured in combat since 9/11,” he said. Now halfway through the year, he has raised nearly

Elite Marine units to receive new pistols
Adding to their arsenal, the Marine Corps’ special operation and reconnaissance units are set to receive the next generation of .45-caliber pistols by 2017. The new gun, dubbed the Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistol, will be an upgraded version of the pistols currently used by the Corps’ elite units. “It’s more efficient to replace the guns over time instead of attempting to completely rebuild them,” said Charles Clark III, who oversees infantry weapons requirements at the Corps’ Combat Development and Integration Office at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

American leadership is failing to lead
By Bob Zimmerman, Veteran Advocate The most powerful nation on Earth can’t control it’s southern international boundary with Mexico. Why? Do we suffer a lack of all-American leadership in failing to uphold the rule of law. The men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol fight an inhumane war everyday to protect and defend our homeland from a drug cartel insurgency chasing after millions of dollars of U.S. currency. How many Middle East Muslim radicals, whose facial features resemble the faces of our Mexican neighbors, are crossing our border with terrorism in our homeland on their evil ideological minds. From Mexico, it’s terrorism at America’s border, courtesy of the drug lords. Protecting and defending the integrity of our America is a job our elected leaders assure us when they raise their right hand and swear their allegiance to protect and defend We The People from all enemies foreign and domestic. Our nation’s defenders of freedom
in the war on terror everyday deal with a friend or foe scenario, as their fellow Marines, Sailors or Soldiers die from an enemy who hides behind living shields of women and children.
From the perspective of your Veteran Advocate, the above is a form of torture for our troops, it just may be a key element causing “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.” Day after day our combat veterans are exposed to horror from hell. Imagine yourself being put in a situation where your life is challenged daily. When you see photos of groups of our troops with their heads bowed in prayer asking God to protect them so they may, one day, return home to the open arms of loved ones. Respect seems to have been put on a back shelf by far to many Americans, even one American having a lack of respect, is to many people. We The People respect all Americans and their belief, but we all must understand that we live in a country that has given it’s blessing to the rule of law. That blessing came as an integral part of our

founding fathers plan to recognize God as our creator. Since the Fourth of July 1776, God has played a major role in the success of this land of exceptionalism. Our creators recognition adorns the walls and porticos of our U.S. court system, national halls of governance, national memorials, national cemeteries across the world where many thousands of American fallen heroes are laid to rest. Again, from the perspective of this Veteran Advocate, far to many Americans find it impossible to recognize all of the above all-American traditions. In effectuating their personal selfishness they attempt to disrupt the Good Order of our National Heritage, as we pay homage to our creator for this one nation under God. We The People are proud of our accomplishments — the founding of this great country, the place of esteem we have achieved in becoming the leader of the free world, the world’s 911 center in time of disaster, the need to respond to protect and defend the lands of our allies, by so doing we protected our American homeland. By being a good neighbor America was granted the territory in the land of our allies to bury our fallen defenders of freedom. Each American cemetery on foreign soil is, in fact, U.S. sovereign territory, so recognized by the display of Old Glory waving its red, white, and blue banner overseeing the resting place for American fallen heroes, our defenders of freedom for all who seek freedom.
of the Corps
Operational security (OPSEC)
This is always a hot button topic. We are extremely proud of our men and interesting facts and figures sometimes spill out of us like a sieve. The saying goes, “Loose lips sink ships” — or tanks or helos or whatever fits in your husband’s job description.
What is OPSEC?
OPSEC is keeping potential adversaries from discovering critical unit information. As the name suggests, it protects U.S. operations — planned, in progress and those completed. Success depends on secrecy and surprise so the military can accomplish the mission more quickly and with less risk. Enemies of freedom want this information, and they are not just after the military member to get it. They want you, the family member. Yes, you the family members. Sometimes even we provide too much information. We’ve heard of the spouse who drives around with the sticker on her car back window that says, “Half of my heart is in…” and some stalker follows her home since he knows she’s home alone. He tries to follow her on base but his plan is thwarted by the MPs at the gate. Also take for instance the young couple while in Afghanistan that had just spokne over the satellite phone. Then not a few minutes later the wife received word from another wife that her husband had been hit by an IED and the unit had only found his finger. Due to how communication is sketchy at best she spent hours in agony with no word from her husband or the command.
How can you help?
Regardless of what info you know, it may or may not be 100% truthful and ensuring safety is the number one priority. Besides the social nono of sharing someone else’s info, you wouldn’t want anyone else putting your husband’s life at risk over a Facebook post. If the battalion commander wanted everyone on the western hemisphere to know when the unit goes anywhere at the same time on the same route to the same place he’d announce it himself. You don’t leave your purse out to make it easier for thieves. So don’t overshare when you have confidential and private information. If you have parents or inlaws who spill the beans, remind them that the information you provide them with is privileged and important to not pass on casually. In general, we all do a great job of keeping loose lips from sinking ships. Let’s continue to keep all of these guys and gals safe until they are all home. Questions or comments? “Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery.” – Calvin Coolidge
John Calvin Coolidge, Jr., (July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933) was the 30th President of the United States (1923–1929). A Republican lawyer from Vermont, Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming governor of that state. His actions during the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight. Soon after, he was elected as the 29th Vice President in 1920 and succeeded to the Presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924, he gained a reputation as a small-government conservative, and also as a man who said very little.

Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He then organized the end of World War II and established firm precedents for the beginning of the Cold War.
1. Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln, was elected as the 16th president and nearly single handedly saved the Union during the American Civil War. Lincoln’s leadership during the Civil War was one of stern direction and no compromise. However, at the same time Lincoln clearly understood that he would have the task of uniting the States once the North won the war. Lincoln’s actions and vision kept the union together and eventually led to the abolition of slavery in the United States.
5. Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was elected as the third President and his decision to execute the Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the United States’ size overnight. Jefferson was known to be a strong states rights activist who realized the need for consolidating power in the federal government when necessary.
6. Ronald Reagan
2. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
FDR was elected as the 32nd President and is the only President to serve four terms. Throughout his time in office, FDR had an enormous impact on America. Roosevelt worked tirelessly to end the Great Depression, including the creation and establishment of the New Deal implemented to assist America’s return to international prominence.
3. George Washington
Washington served as our first President and set forth many important precedents and actions that were later followed by his predecessors. His insistence on not becoming a “monarchy” was pivotal for American politics. This two-term precedent was eclipsed when FDR served four terms. The 22nd amendment has made certain that no President will ever serve more than two terms.
4. Andrew Johnson
1. Barack Obama
When dangers threaten the U.S., he does not reassure his people that everything will be fine. He just acts as if he does not care at all. His fight against global war is annoying because his incapacity to protect this country really shows his cowardice. He tries to be diplomatic even if terrorists want to destroy America. He is a great spender, and believes that if the government would spend more, prosperity will be achieved. To increase government spending would only mean more debts and less economic growth and this is the reason why America is now in a huge economic downfall.
2. Jimmy Carter
As president, Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed “Reaganomics,” advocated reducing tax rates to spur economic growth, controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, deregulation of the economy, and reducing government spending. He was reelected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming that it was “Morning in America.” His second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, such as the ending of the Cold War, the 1986 bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. He ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents and is credited for generating an ideological renaissance on the American political right.

During his four years in the White House, he presided over the worst economic downturn since World War II, allowed a bunch of thugs to seize our embassy and our citizens, and supported Philippine dictator Fernando Marcos, Pakistani General Zia al Huq, Saudi King Faud and many other dictators. His postpresidential meddling in foreign affairs has cost America dearly, both in terms of international credibility and international prestige.
3. Richard Nixon
In June, 1972, several of Nixon’s men were caught breaking into Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. – bringing to light the infamous Watergate Scandal. Nixon himself downplayed the scandal as mere politics, but when his aides resigned in
Andrew Johnson was basically the James Buchanan of the 1860s. Like many before him, Johnson ducked the question of the morality of Civil Rights by claiming that he wanted to leave the decision up to the states. He was actually a flaming racist, stating once in a letter to a friend, “This is a country for white men, and by God, as long as I am President, it shall be a government for white men”.
5. James Buchanan
He was very indecisive, “Wishy Washy” He was not married and had a relative fill in as hostess in the White House. ( She was technically the first, first lady) Buchanan was ridiculed in the media of the day as being a “dandy”, we was reported to be effeminate , this coupled with his 12+ years living with a man, caused rumors of his sexuality. Editor’s Note: The common consensus is that George W. Bush should make this list.
6. George W. Bush
Here are just a few reasons that Bush makes the worst list: Took more vacation time than any other President. Invaded Iraq to get rid of WMDs which didn’t exist. Implemented protectionist steel tariffs. Outed a CIA agent for political purposes. Fired prosecutors who refused to abuse their positions for political purposes. Disregarded FISA laws and wiretapped Americans without warrants. Never caught Osama Bin Laden. Created a vague “enemy combatant” status in order to indefinitely hold foreigners and even U.S. citizens without trying or charging them with a crime. Approved budgets that outspent our tax revenue by hundreds of billions of dollars. Poor leadership in response to Hurricane Katrina. ’Nuff said.

boys to men
The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father s, but he
or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and a 155mm howitzer. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march.
He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full
has never collected unemployment either. He’s a recent high school graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. making life count
Emily Dickinson once wrote, “If I can stop one heart from breaking… [or] ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.” What can we do in our daily life to make some meaning or blessing come from it? I heard a quote sometime ago that reflects on enhancing the meaning of giving a gift. It stated, “The value of a gift is increased by the ef-
said, “No man is fit to live if he has nothing he is willing to die for.” I remember one such person; that I was taught about as a little boy, who made a difference by planting apple seeds along the roads of life he walked. I had an old 45 rpm record of the song of Johnny Appleseed. I used to play it over and over. It was a Mr. John Chapman who became that famous Johnny Appleseed. And still today, because
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “No man is fit to live if he has nothing he is willing to die for.” fort, love and sacrifice of the giver.” I have learned that the greatest joys in our life often come from giving of ourselves. Many times in our live we are given opportunities to make the world a better place than when we found it. Our simple, but consistent efforts to bless the lives of those who walk along our life’s path can literally changes the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. once
he gave of himself everywhere he walked; there are apple trees along the roads of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. I’ve heard it said, “…that each day, we are either planting seeds for brighter tomorrows, or we are letting great opportunities pass us by.” We literally often hold seeds of tomorrow in our hands. When we choose to share them or plant them along our life’s path, we make future traveling for

Chappy’s on Eagle’s Wings others brighter, even though we may never pass that way again. Several years ago my great-grandmother died, due to a blood clot traveling from her leg through her circulatory system to her heart. She was dead for several minutes before they were able to revive her. My parents talked with her afterwards and she told them that she no longer feared death. She said that she had been given a review of her life and felt it had been a good life, but that she still had much more to learn and wanted to share this with loved ones. She finally died a couple days later to rejoin those loved ones. She always had been a woman who gave of herself to others. How will we feel when we someday have a similar experience? Will we be happy during our review or wish we hadn’t missed opportunities? With all the opportunities we are given to make a difference in this life, I pray that we seize those moments and make them become life enhancing for all who cross our path. Mary Catherine Fish once wrote, “Along the way I learned the power of simple truths: that life is without guarantees, that every moment counts, and that love endures.” Love is what endures through our selfless acts of service, and they create “The Dash” of our lives. One last thought on making life count, is an old saying most of us have heard, but one I try to keep in mind
By Chaplain Ringo, www.yourchappy.com
A poem I have shared in the past and have read at a funerals I have conducted reflects on this thought. It is called...
“The Dash” I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning to the end. He noted that first came her date of birth, and spoke the following date with tears. But he said what mattered most of all, was the dash between those years. For the dash represents all the time, that she spent alive on earth… And now only those who loved her know, what that little line is worth. For it matters not how much we own: the cars…the houses…the cash. What matters is how we live and love, and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard…are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough, to consider what’s true and real, And always try to understand, the way other people feel, And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more, And love the people in our lives, like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile… Remembering that this special dash, might last only a little while. So, when your eulogy’s being read, with your life’s actions to rehash, Would you be proud of the things they say, about how you spent your dash?
from day to day. It is this, “I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing…that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;…for I shall not pass this way again.” May we look for the opportunities

This issue we’re driving Hyundai’s luxury class effort, the 2012 Equus Signature. This is our second drive of an Equus, and I’ll admit this car impresses me more and more every time I drive one. Hyundai continues to market Equus in a “rethink everything you know about luxury” wrapper, and the theory is starting to work. However, as I mentioned in last year’s column, changing a consumer’s view of Hyundai from its core philosophy of “lower price” automobile to “luxury extraordinaire” is still a challenge. Built in Ulsan, Korea, Equus indeed plays in the “quality and handling” ballpark of the competitors, including Lexus, Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti. I still feel, nevertheless, Hyundai needs to distance its Equus branding as far as possible from sibling Hyundai offerings, similar to what Acura (Honda), Lexus (Toyota) and Infiniti (Nissan) did with its marketing premise. Granted, Hyundai is not yet ready to roll out a new dealer network based on one quality luxury car, but future Equus-style smaller cars could allow Hyundai the same options as Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. Until then, Equus will share dealer showroom space with its Hyundai kin while generating a successful implementation into this very competitive, and finicky, high luxury market. It may take several years to accomplish, but the wait may be worth it for Hyundai’s bottom line.

Test Drive 2012 hyundai equus signature
As for the car, Equus is a remarkable effort and the best “under $60K” full size luxury car I’ve ever driven. The exterior and interior are exactly what luxury owners demand from higher priced cars, and then some. Our Equus had no options on the added feature list, meaning when you plunk down the $58K for the Equus, everything a luxury consumer demands comes with the deal. Without going into every amenity, Equus owners will enjoy a driver’s seat massage system (very nice), lane departure warning system that tugs on the seatbelt if you don’t correct (Equus will know if the driver is falling asleep!), pre-collision warning system, power reclining rear seats, smart cruise control with automatic braking logic, rear back-up camera, wood trim interior, six disc 17-speaker 7.1 discrete Lexicon 608 watt surround sound system, navigation and numerous other high tech bells and whistles. I love the lane departure system, as it truly can save lives by waking a driver who nods off for whatever reason. Under the hood a new, larger, 5.0 liter V8 pumps out a stunning 429 horses, quite a bit more than last year’s 4.6 liter V8 that powered our 2011 Equus. Additionally, a new eight-speed automatic transmission replaces last year’s six-speed, allowing excellent 23-mpg highway fuel mileage and respectable 15 city from a powerful 429 horse engine. The increase in power and engine size follows suite with the other big luxury manufacturers, where high horsepower and good fuel mileage are the norm. Equus’ ride is excellent thanks to an electric air suspension dual mode continuous damping control independent setup that allows traction administration via 19-inch tires and beautiful chrome alloy wheels. Want a surprise? Drive an Equus and you’ll find a new world of luxury for less than $60K. Yes, it’s that good.

have a chance of being produced. General Motors designer Harley Earl is generally credited with inventing the concept car, and did much to popularize it through its traveling Motorama shows of the 1950s. Concept cars never go into production directly; in modern times all would have to undergo many changes before the design is finalized for the sake of practicality, safety and cost. A “production-intent” vehicle, as opposed to a concept vehicle, serves this purpose. They are also known as prototype cars, but should not be confused with prototype race cars such as the Le Mans Prototype. Concept cars are often radical in engine or design. Some use non-traditional, exotic, or expensive materials, ranging from paper to carbon fiber to refined alloys. Others have unique layouts, such as gullwing doors, 3 or 6 (or more) wheels, or special abilities not usually found on cars. Because of these often impractical or unprofitable leanings, many concept cars never get past scale models, or even drawings in computer design. Other more traditional concepts can be developed into fully drivable (operational) vehicles with a working drivetrain and accessories. The state of most concept cars lies somewhere in between and does not represent the final product. A very small proportion of concept cars are functional to any useful extent, some cannot move safely at anything above 10 mph.

your lawyer is, they high-five each other. 4. He picks the jury by playing “duck-duck-goose.” 5. During the trial you catch him playing his Gameboy. 6. Just before he says “Your Honor,” he makes those little quotation marks in the air with his fingers. 15. The sign in front of his law office reads “Practicing Law Since 2:25 PM.” 16. One fine day, Jim and Bob are out golfing. Jim slices his ball deep into a wooded ravine. He grabs his 8-iron and proceeds down the embankment into the ravine in search of his ball. The brush is quite thick, but Jim searches diligently and suddenly he spots something shiny. As he gets closer, he realizes that the shiny object is in fact an 8-iron in the hands of a skeleton lying near an old golf ball. Jim excitedly calls out to his golfing partner: “Hey Bob, come here, I got trouble down here.” Bob comes running over to the edge of the ravine and calls out: “What’s the matter Jim?” Jim shouts back in a nervous voice: “Throw me my 7-iron! You can’t get out of here with an 8-iron.”

At The Movies
the dark night rises By Jeri Jacquin / Movie Maven
Now in theaters, from director Chris Nolan and Warner Bros. Pictures, is the continuation of the masked crusader’s return in the highly anticipated THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. This film begins as Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is in seclusion as Gotham City morns the death of Harvey Dent. The atmosphere is thick as something hangs in the wind. Beneath the streets of the city there is mayhem brewing in the form of a villain named Bane (Tom Hardy). Above ground. another nimblefooted masked woman is making a name for herself. Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) is picking the rich clean of their jewelry and whatever tickles her
fancy and that includes Bruce Wayne. One night she steals his mother’s pearl necklaces but that’s not what she’s really after. The little meeting between the two sparks something in the recluse as he begins to realize that Gotham might be in trouble. Especially when Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) has been hurt and Deputy Commissioner Foley (Matthew Modine) is put in charge. A young policeman, John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) confronts Bruce telling him that Batman is needed. All of this causes problems between Wayne and his faithful butler Alfred (Michael Caine). But Batman discovers who Bane is and turns to Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) for help. What is at stake is something Gotham City has never experienced and possibly more than Batman can handle as the ultimate fight begins. Final Word: Holy moly! I have absolutely no idea where to begin. This film is going to make fans totally insane. First of all if you think for one moment I’m going to give away any spoilers – stop reading here. There is no way I would even think of spoiling what is in this film for fans. With that said I shall carefully tell you what I can.

Bale as Batman has once again put in a solid performance. If it is true that this is his last Batman film then he is putting everything he has into every move he makes. Nolan has ground Bruce down to the ground forcing him to either stay down and accept defeat or remember who he is. It is done in such a graphic way it hurt to watch. Yes, that’s all your getting from me. Hathaway’s Catwoman character is very interesting. There is a humanity to her that shows in her eyes. Having her own reasons for her life choices there is a deeper story that lies just below the surface. She obviously has serious trust issues but, honestly, most street cats do. Caine is still amazing as Alfred and he is the rock of Wayne Manor. Oldman is steadfast as Commissioner Gordon continuing to deal with the decision he made letting Gotham believe Batman is responsible for the death of Harvey Dent. That decision had consequences he never saw coming. Modine as the Deputy Commissioner is the new gunslinger in town and his aim is not for criminals but to take down Batman. In his quest to do so he puts lives in danger. Finally, Hardy as Bane. I know this is going to get me in a little hot water but unfortunately I can’t always
understand what he says which bothers me a tad. I feel like I’m being left out of something important! Other than that he is buff, he is eerily bulky and uses that to his full advantage. This is by no means a friendly Bane as he has one goal in mind – to take Gotham to ashes. Other cast include: Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Holly Robinson as Juno Temple, Aidan Gillen as CIA, Josh Stewart as Bane Mercenary, Daniel Sunjata as CIA Special Unit. Final Word: I give THE DARK KNIGHT RISES four tubs of popcorn out of five. This film is dark, disturbing, heavy, gritty, scary, and sometimes painful to watch. There are not many light moments and when there are it’s fleeting. Nolan has brought almost every nightmare conceivable to Gotham and throws it right into the audiences face. In the two hour and 44 minute running time this is an epic goodbye by Christopher Nolan as only he can do it. Finishing his Batman and ending it absolutely the way he wanted to, audiences are given a chance to take an amazing journey in a visionary way. Thanks for the ride of our lives Chris! In the end – a fire will rise!
Entertainment Christopher Knight headlines car show By Rebecca Jefferis Williamson He’s got a new radio show on the horizon, a reality TV series in the rear view mirror, and a little show called The Brady Bunch in the history books. He’s Christopher Knight and he’s out promoting himself and his new venture. Knight will be appearing at the Pacific Beach Hot Rod & Classic Car Show being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 in Pacific Beach on Garnet between Mission and Dawes. This event, sponsored by Sycuan Casino, features hundreds of hot rods, classic cars, a fabulous bikini contest and cars from the movies. This is a perfect venue for Knight to promote his upcoming radio project, a “guy show” on motor sports featuring Gordon Lugnutzz. Also in the works is a reality show based on the racing industry and how to become a competent race car driver. Come on out and meet Christopher. He’s super handsome and has lots of stories to share… like what really happened to Brady Bunch pets Fluffy and Tiger. Knight has also worked as a businessman in the computer and software industry on high-tech concepts if that’s a topic more your thing. In closing, Christopher Knight wanted me to be sure to give a “hats off” from him to the San Diego military men and women.
Commentary continued from page 21 >>> and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you’re thirsty, he’ll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He’ll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to “squareaway” those around him who haven’t bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful. Just as did his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has
asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration
with his blood. And now we even have women over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so.
As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot… a short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets.
