America needs more media bias, claim some on the left

alance is supposed to be a good thing, which is why President Obama keeps using “balanced approach” as a euphemism for what he has also more bluntly described as “massive, job-killing tax increases.” At the same time, however, some of Obama’s most fervid supporters are complaining that there’s too much balance--in the media. On the New York Times website, former Enron adviser Paul Krugman rants that “the cult of balance” has “poisoned our political system”: Think about what’s happening right now. We have a crisis in which the right is making insane demands, while the president and Democrats in Congress are bending over backward to be accommodating. . . . So what do most news reports say? They portray it as a situation in which both sides are equally partisan, equally intransigent – because news reports always do that. . . .

Clark Gable, the scandal that wasn’t Clark Gable married five times, slept with nearly all of his co-stars, and cheated on everyone. In just about every movie in which he plays the romantic lead, he cajoles, spanks, slaps, or otherwise mistreats the object of his affection. In other words, he’s a b---------, but he’s one steamy b---------. And he challenged the image of the leading man in 1930s Hollywood, offering a barrel-chested alternative to the fleet-footed likes of Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. He looked very much as if someone had taken a swarthy pirate, given him a facial, parted his hair to the side,

Tea Party ‘Terrorists’ According to the website Politico, Vice President Joe Biden agreed “with a line of argument made by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) at a two-hour, closed-door Democratic Caucus meeting” that congressional tea party members “acted like terrorists” in the way they stood against attempts to raise taxes and force spending reductions as part of the debt-ceiling deal. Biden denied making the comparison. Given the heated rhetoric behind and in front of the scenes, the use of such a phrase, particularly in light of Biden’s known salty language, has credibility. Apparently tea party critics are constitutional illiterates. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution begins, “We the people.” Rights come from God, not politicians who think they are God. We grant power to our leaders to serve us. We are not their slaves.

Recently dubbed one of the world’s 100 most powerful women by Forbes Magazine, Van Susteren is the recipient of both the 2000-2001 Sandra Day O’Connor Medal of Honor from Seton Hall University and the American Bar Association Presidential Award for “Excellence in Journalism.” (2001). She was also awarded the first place 2002 National Headliners Award as part of an investigative team covering the “Attack on America.” Greta Van Susteren joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in January 2002 as the host of the prime-time news and interview program, “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren”, which launched in February 2002. “On the Record” is the highest rated cable news program in the 10 p.m. timeslot.

The reality, of course, is that we already have a centrist president-actually a moderate conservative president. . . . You have to ask, what would it take for these news organizations and pundits to actually break with the convention that both sides are equally at fault? The amusingly named Ari Melber, writing in the hard-left magazine The Nation, echoes the theme, complaining that reporters are “nursing Balance Bias.” He quotes extensively from Jay Rosen, a New York University scholar who gives an intellectual gloss to the complaint that the media are insufficiently biased in favor of the left: Rosen, a prolific media critic who has a theory, developed in a series of essays that are both elegant and reproachful, that today’s political reporters are on a futile “quest for innocence” when reporting political disputes. By innocence, Rosen means “a determination not to be implicat-

Commentary ed, enlisted or seen by the public as involved.” I asked him how that works on this debt story. “Asymmetry in a highly contested situation fries the circuits of the press,” Rosen said via e-mail this week. “The bigger the stakes, the more dangerous it feels for reporters to reflect that asymmetry in their accounts,” he proposed. That makes sense, since often it’s “the big lie” that gets more traction than little fibs. So the political press rebuted [sic] Sarah Palin’s spin about opposing “The Bridge to Nowhere” in 2008, a low-stakes example, but they back down on a market-shaking feud like the debt fight. And Rosen suggests that while Democrats or Talking Points Memo or Eugene Robinson may call out the problem, that doesn’t actually do much. “The people screaming about an asymmetrical situation that has been artificially balanced are likely to be on one side of the contested ground, right? This fries the circuits even more, adding to the danger [for innocent reporters],” he says. This is also your brain on Balance Bias. This is a fascinating development. Conservatives have spent decades bellyaching about media bias, but their complaints have become less bitter in recent years with the rise of alternatives outside the so-called mainstream media: talk radio, independent bloggers and especially Fox News Channel. Turnabout is fair play, and now people on the left grumble incessantly that Fox fails to live up to its “fair and balanced” slogan. They insist it actually slants right. That’s undoubtedly true of its commentary programs, such as “Hannity” and “The O’Reilly Factor,” but news shows like “Special Report With Bret Baier” are at least as down-the-middle as anyone else’s. But for the likes of Krugman, Melber and Rosen, down-the-middle journalism is the problem. They want the press corps to accept their own political doctrines as the truth and to treat anyone who departs from them as, in Krugman’s words, “insane.”

Fair and balanced…

Fox News makes no bones about not supporting liberals and the left. It has and continues to support politicians and causes from the right to the very, very far right. My opinion of Fox News is that in reality it is pointing out that major media — print (New York Times, Washinton Post) and television (ABC, NBC, CBS) — are leaning to the left. Fox News is leveling the playing field with its right bent. If Fox News changed its catch words to “fair and counter-balanced,” I think detractors would be devoid of ammunition. And those patriots just might force the vice president and his boss out of a job next November. That is their right. They have it in their power.

Fill it with crime, not excluding the unmentionable sort, and it will sell like hotcakes!” So said Lord Northcliffe when he started the British tabloid brand of journalism that the UK has cherished for more than 100 years. And Lord Northcliffe never dreamed of the impact TV and the Internet added to the mix. (Let’s just say in the war against Rupert Murdoch, the Brits have managed to add their own lawbreaking and criminality, as well as lumping in the police!) Now people are asking of the Murdoch story if celebrity journalism will die down? Reporter Hannah Betts inquires if celebrity worship has had its day? Well, I don’t think so. The only thing I can say is that it would be great if we international gossips developed some real celebrities to fill the ranks of tabloids, TV and the Internet. True stars who have accomplished something that we can inquire about. I’d be the first to mourn the loss of a newspaper anywhere, and I do mean The New York Post, which had already begun its marked downfall when it fired me several years ago. But it would be fun, just now and then, to read a name on Page Six that one can recognize or care about. Navy vet’s home gets an “Extreme Makeover” By Kelly Wright, Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Raleigh Public Affai8rs Sailors with NRD stood alongside members of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and First Lady Michelle Obama in late July to help reveal a new home built for a Navy veteran in Fayetteville, NC in late July. Ty Pennington and his crew built the home in just one week in 2011 during one of the hottest summers on record as part of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The recipient of the home, Navy veteran Barbara Marshall, provides housing to homeless female military veterans. The show will air sometime in October of this year. By Crystal Arriaga Almost all of us have been there; eager to find new friends within the unit and somehow always stumble upon individuals who ask, “What rank is YOUR husband?!” To be fair wives are curious and may not be aware of this faux pas. They may not know how to begin to mesh with others in the unit/group. The question is generally asked with positive intentions to relate to you but often just sounds rude and condescending. Although if you answer the question and then notice a silence followed by a sniff, huff sound or an “Ohhh…” then you know you’re in the presence of one of those wives. Politely excuse yourself, avoid them like the plague and maybe buy her some Allegra because unless she has severe allergies there is no excuse for the sound effects. This isn’t high school or the movie Mean Girls. Some ‘name drop’ their husbands’ rank and think they rate higher than Chesty Puller. We do not DO our husbands’ jobs and most are not sworn IN the Marine Corps. Wives who use their husbands’ rank for what in their minds is entitlement or power are hilariously mistaken. many things but shouldn’t utilize a demeaning attitude. Wives with noses in the air and degrading undertones can join a ‘Sit on our High Horses Club’ and drink tea with their pinkies in the air all day and they probably do. Fact is though if we do not lean on each other to learn, deal, vent and help one another we’re useless for the next generation of wives. They sincerely want to learn from us and how we somehow managed to get by through everything. Every husband is just as valuable to the Marine Corps as the next one. As you can obviously see between the different specialties there are Marines that have more rank with few medals and some with less rank and many medals but either way we should respect them equally for their service. The reality is as wives we can only hang on for the ride. Don’t fret though there are plenty of ladies who simply seek a normal, not caddy, not competitive or narcissistic, shoulder to lean on kind of friend. Avoid the shenanigans and choose to be up-range from the drama. Try to steer clear of any negativity that can hurt your chances of finding some really outstanding and loyal sisters. Honoring Our Troops (HRT) held its “America Cares” troops care package event on July 30. In just two-and-a-half hours, volunteers packed 456 boxes. The event was so successful that packages needing to be sent outpaced the monies for postage. The Navy is looking for chiefs to help craft the next generation of advancement exams. It is planned for the exams to be completed in time for the 2012 fall cycle for active and reserve sailors. The retooled exams will limit general military knowledge to 25 questions and have 150 rate-specific questions. Navy officials are looking for well-rounded chiefs in one of the 43 ratings outlined in NAVADMIN 217/11. Each rating’s test writer will visit Pensacola, Fla., on the Navy’s dime for week-long advancement exam development conferences, which will be held Oct. 1 through March 25. A new Returning Heroes Tax Credit for firms that hire unemployed veterans (maximum credit of $2,400 for every short-term unemployed hire and $4,800 for every long-term unemployed hire) and a Wounded Warriors Tax Credit which will increase the existing tax credit for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been unemployed long-term (maximum credit of $9,600 per veteran) and continue the existing credit for all other veterans with a service-connected disability (maximum credit of $4,800).

Jimmie L. Foster, head of the nation’s largest veterans service organization, says is he “greatly concerned” about eh widespread use of an apparently ineffective medication by the VA doctors treating patients with post traumatic stress. According to Foster, fully 20 percent of the nearly 87,000 veterans treated for PTS were given a medication that has proven to be nearly useless. The two drugs that are government-approved to treat PTS are Zoloft and Paxil, both antidepressants. Foster said he is urging Congress to conduct hearings on the ongoing difficulties experienced by DoD and VA in treatment of PTS and traumatic brain injury.

East Coast, West Coast Marines battle it out in the surf

and one from the West entered the water together and surfed their best three waves. They then ran to shore and tagged a teammate to go out and do the same. Judges scored the best two waves of the three for each surfer. Judges included members of the National Surf League and renowned waterman and stand up paddle champion Kai Lenny. With surf knee to waist high with occasional shoulder high sets and clean sections mixed in, the Marines were able show off their skills and have fun at the same time. While the East Coast team acknowledged the lack of home-field advantage could be a problem, they felt confident they could use the smaller, East Coast-style conditions of the day to their benefit, and

were determined to prove themselves. The two teams took opposing tactical strategies - the West Coast Team sending their strongest surfers into the water first, gambling that conditions were at their best and the East Coast holding their best surfers back, hoping for conditions to improve. The West Coast seemed to have the better strategy as the early conditions proved the best of the day, and as they jumped out to an early lead. The lead was so significant that it looked as though the contest might prove severely one-sided despite the East Coast Team’s best efforts. However as the day progressed, the East Coast narrowed the gap significantly, reducing their 10 point deficit to almost a tie. The East Coast comeback was lead by a very strong session by SSgt Chris Mulcany, who earned the highest score of the day with a 7.5, and with it a surfboard as a prize. In the end the East Coast fell just short of victory, as the final score stood at East Coast 43.5 and West Coast 46.0. The East Coast team had the dubious honor of presenting the winning team with their prize - new surfboards for each team member. Although no Marine likes to lose, and the East Coast team was primed for a rematch, everyone shook hands, joked with each other and the overall vibe was one of comradery and brotherhood.

Some good news has come out of a new study that looked into most effective ways to prevent sudden cardiac death: maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise significantly reduces the risk of this condition. The research, published in the recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, focused on women. However, its findings are also relevant for men, says Israel LoBue, owner of Fit Body Boot Camp in San Diego,. “This is yet another body of medical evidence that clearly shows the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that includes physical fitness,” he says. In the United States, sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, causes more than 300,000 deaths every year. Among

main risk factors are heart disease, obesity, smoking, and inactivity. “All these factors are inter-related,” LoBue points out. “Sedentary lifestyle leads to obesity, which, in turn, can cause heart disease – the leading killer of Americans. And, of course, smoking is harmful to health in general.” The new study, however, found that those who don’t smoke, eat sensibly, maintain healthy weight, and exercise regularly, can lower their risk of sudden cardiac death by more than 90 percent. “Sometimes, even the simplest preventive measures can go a long way,” LoBue notes. “These new findings prove once again that physical activity and other healthy habits are real lifesavers.” When it comes to preventing potentially serious complications of heart disease — including sudden cardiac arrest — regular exercise is beneficial in several ways, LoBue says. “If you are overweight, it will help you lose the extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight. It will also strengthen your cardiovascular system,” he says.

While any regimen that keeps you moving is beneficial, LoBue says interval training, which alternates a highintensity workout with periods of lowintensity activity or rest, is especially effective in improving cardiovascular fitness and the body’s potential to burn fat. “It provides a great workout for your heart, dramatic weight loss results, and a leaner shape in less time than many other programs,” he says. Those who already have heart disease or any other medical condition should consult a doctor before starting interval training, LoBue suggests. “In any case, there are plenty of other, less strenuous exercises that you could safely do to get yourself – and your heart – in the best possible shape,” he says.

Real Courage In the heat of the summer there is a lot of time to kick back and think about life and things we ought to reflect on. One is the topic of courage. Real courage comes in many different forms. We have seen those who show great bravery in fighting wars, and those who risk their lives to rescue another in dangerous waters, and so on. People we call heroes because of their selfless, noble acts tend to come to mind when we ponder such a topic. However, there is also another type of quiet courage that we often don’t think about very much. It is the courage of self-restraint. I read a story concerning Jackie Robinson that exemplifies this type of courage. Another story of a ballplayer, Sandy Koufax, a Jewish pitcher with a sling like David’s for a left arm, announced that he wouldn’t play on the holiest day of his year, Yom Kipper. Koufax’s employer, the Los Angeles Dodgers, respectfully pointed out that this was the first game of the 1965 World Series. Couldn’t he pitch just a little? “NO”, he said. But later, he pitched a shutout in games five and seven, and the Dodgers went on to win the series, 4-3. During the “dog days of summer” with often relentless heat and crowds at the beaches, parks and amusement parks, we may want to take a few extra seconds when we are feeling angry and consider the courage not to react. Also, many of us have and are known to have the courage to fight the big battles, but do we have the courage to overcome the desire to get even or lash out in our own personal battles? Do we have the courage to hold true to our standards and traditions? Honor, Courage and Commitment… I pray we do. We need to create that haven from the storms of life to be in our homes. May we focus our energies for the big battles of war, and have the courage to hold back at times when we feel like lashing out, and make peace in our daily personal lives. aurel and Hardy were one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy double acts of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Composed of thin, Englishman Stan Laurel (1890–1965) and heavy, American Oliver Hardy

(1892–1957) they became well known during the late 1920s to the mid-1940s for their visual slapstick comedy, with Laurel playing the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous Hardy. They made over 100 films together, initially short films before expanding into feature length films in the 1930s. Their films include Sons of the Desert (1933), the Academy Award winning short film The Music Box (1932), Babes in Toyland (1934), and Way Out West (1937). Hardy’s catchphrase Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into! is still widely recognized. Prior to the double act both were established actors with Laurel appearing in over 50 films and Hardy in over 250 films. Although the two comedians first worked together on the film The Lucky Dog (1921), this was a chance pairing and it was not until 1926, when both separately signed contracts with the Hal Roach film studio, that they began appearing in movie shorts together.Laurel and Hardy officially became a team the following year in the silent short film Putting Pants on Philip (1927). The pair remained with the Roach studio until 1940, then appeared in eight “B” comedies for 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1941 to 1945. Disappointed by the reduced level of creative control they had had over their films they instead concentrated on stage shows from 1946 to 1950, embarking on a music hall tour of England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1950 they made their last film, a French/Italian co-production called Atoll K, before retiring from the screen. In total they appeared together in 107 films. They starred in 40 short sound films, 32 short silent films and 23 full length feature films, and made 12 guest or cameo appearances, including the recently-discovered Galaxy of Stars (1936). A common comedy routine was a titfor-tat fight. Their silent film Big Business (1929), which includes one of these routines, was added to the Library of Congress as a national treasure in 1992. Notable Laurel traits included crying like a baby while being berated and

scratching his hair when in shock. On December 1, 1954, the team made their only American television appearance, surprised by Ralph Edwards on his live NBC-TV program, This Is Your Life. The works of Laurel and Hardy have been re-released in numerous theatrical reissues, television revivals, 16mm and 8mm home movies, feature-film compilations, and home video since the 1930s. They were voted the seventh greatest comedy act in a 2005 UK poll by fellow comedians. The duo’s signature tune, known variously as “The Cuckoo Song”, “Ku-Ku”, or “The Dance of the Cuckoos”, played on the opening credits of their films. The official Laurel and Hardy appreciation society is known as The Sons of the Desert, after a fraternal society in their film of the same name.

Sightseeing between courses

My love affair with New Orleans began when I was a student at Tulane University. Peel and eat shrimp, oysters on the half-shell, gumbo, beignets and muffaletta became standard fare. Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Louis Prima and Fats Domino appeared nightly in French Quarter clubs. Food and music are the foundation of the Big Easy. It was heady stuff for an 18 year-old college freshman. In my opinion, there is no city in the world of its size that has better food or music. On this return trip (one of many), my goal was to intertwine dining experiences with sightseeing over a three day period. After my wife and I arrived, we made a pilgrimage. “Breakfast at Brennan’s” features an ala carte or a threecourse prix-fixe menu. The latter is my recommendation. We started with two of their specialty drinks, a Creole Bloody Mary and a New Orleans Gin Fizz. Baked apple with double cream was followed by hot French bread and their signature dish, Eggs Hussarde (poached eggs atop Holland rusks, Ca-

nadian bacon, topped with Hollandaise sauce). Save room! Banana’s Foster, a Brennan’s creation, is served for dessert. Once you’ve eaten here you understand why the place has been a favorite since 1946 (www.brennansneworleans.com). A French Quarter self-guided walking tour, using a brochure provided free by the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, was our next agenda item. Wandering the French Quarter reminds you of the history of this special city; homes and commercial buildings from the 1800’s, the St. Louis Cathedral and, of course, Jackson Square (neworleanscvb.com).

Night brought us to Jon Besh’s Domenica Restaurant in the iconic Roosevelt Hotel. We started with torta fritta (fried pizza dough), followed by the chef’s selection of house-cured salami, imported cheeses, marinated olives and roasted vegetables. We shared a brick-oven baked pizza and lasagna Bolognese. Dessert was gelato topped with a shot of espresso. The relaxed atmosphere plus great food is a winning combination. Note: In January 2010, New Orleans CityBusiness magazine honored Chef Alon Shaya and Domenica as Culinary Connoisseurs’ Best Executive Chef and Best Casual Upscale Establishment of the Year. (www. domenicarestaurant.com). Since the goal was sightseeing between courses, we headed to Preservation Hall after dinner. This is home to the New Orleans Jazz Band, where the city’s top musicians jam seven nights a week. There are a few rows of benches and some pillows by the stage but, otherwise, it is standing room only in a funky, no-frills building originally built in 1817. It’s traditional jazz at its best . The Solomon Victory Theater’s Beyond All Boundaries is shown on a 120-foot wide “immersive screen.” It’s a dramatic, high tech experience and a moving tribute to the bravery of the “Greatest Generation” who fought to secure freedom for America and the world. The mall features a half mile of local and national shops, dozens of restaurants and regularly scheduled special events. (www.chefjohnbesh.com) The following morning, found us at the daily jazz brunch at the Court of Two Sisters, another New Orleans institution. Although it has the French Quarter’s largest outdoor courtyard, it retains a charming, romantic ambience. A trio played Dixieland jazz while we loaded and reloaded our plates from their buffet, featuring an array of soups, salads, eggs dishes, a carving station and local favorites (shrimp, crawfish and ribs). Their inhouse baker turns out wonderful mini bagels, French bread, buttermilk biscuits and cornbread. The dessert table was laden with a variety of fresh fruit, cakes, pies, bread pudding and homechurned ice cream with praline or chocolate sauce. ears before Brando popularized the menace and gravitas that characterized a new generation of male stars, there was Gable, and boy did he smolder. For all of Gable’s bad behavior, he never got caught. Apart from whispers and scolds in the gossip columns, his image remained relatively untarnished. His affairs — and the fruit of those affairs — were kept under wraps by the skillful Fixers at his studio, MGM. Gable was paired with every female star in the MGM stable: Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford. At this point, Crawford was already Hollywood royalty. Not only had she proven herself a “hey hey girl” second Loretta Young only to Clara Bow, she was married to Douglas Fairbanks Jr. — son of Douglas Fairbanks and step-son of Mary Pickford, the ruling couple of silent-era Hollywood. Now, I realize that when you read “Joan Crawford” images of Mommie Dearest and freaky Granny-face flash before your eyes, but make them go away and think of THIS girl instead. Then, in 1934, he appeared in It Happened One Night. Now take a deep breath, because I am going to say something that will blow your mind: THIS FILM MIGHT BE BETTER THAN GONE WITH THE WIND. I know! Controversial! I realize that Gone With the Wind is a historical melodrama for all time. I realize it has great clothes. I realize it has motherfucking color. But It Happened One Night, like all the best screwball comedies from the 1930s, relies on wit, banter, charm, and well-placed physical comedy. It is a piquant delight to Gone With the Loretta & Gable’s daughter Wind’s heavy souffle drenched in cream. Plus: THE HITCHHIKING SCENE! You will love this movie, even if you really only love looking at the way Claudette Colbert’s eyebrows refuse to move. But whether or not you agree with me (and, believe me, I am already applying my internet armor for the attack that will come in the comments) what matters is that the film was a smash. It won the “Big Five” Academy Awards (Pictures, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress), including Gable’s first win. And it reaffirmed Gable as a huge star — and one of MGM’s most valued assets. Which is also why MGM was so keen to cover up what came next. In 1934, Gable started filming Call of the Wild Loretta Young and Clark Gable with child star-turned24 August 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

ingenue Loretta Young. Young had been appearing in films since she was three years old, and by age 17, she had already eloped with her Loretta Young on the set of ‘Call of The Wild’ 26-year-old costar. The marriage was annulled a year later, leaving Young free for future exploits. Young was by all accounts an early version of Mandy Moore in Saved!, only minus the praise songs and feathered hair. Case in point: She carried around a “swear jar” on set and demanded that every time someone cursed on set, he/she pay a quarter “for the nuns.” (Spencer Tracy’s reply: “Here’s a twenty, sister. Go ----- yourself.”) Which isn’t to say that Young didn’t get around — she totally did — she just played the religious virgin card to her benefit. Gable, still married, still on the prowl, and so not her apparent type, must have been hard to resist. (Oh hey Loretta, wanna go back to our trailers and make out in our matching wolf coats?) Cut scene, fade to black, and return with Young pregnant with Gable’s child. Most stars in her condition were hospitalized for “exhaustion” or nerves (read: got abortions), but the Catholic Young refused. Instead, she pulled what might be the greatest Hollywood non-publicity stunt of all time. 1) She hides the pregnancy. 2) When she begins to show, she flees to England “on vacation.” 3) When people start asking where the hell she is, she says that she’s dealing with a “condition from childhood.” 4) She somehow smuggles herself back to her mom’s house in Venice, California, where she gives birth. I’m picturing nuns in Joan Crawford gray, with lots of whispering and pulling of the drapes. 5) She sends the baby to an orphanage, trims herself down, and goes back to work. 6) 19 months later, she tells Louella Parsons that she plans to adopt “two babies” and embrace the life of a single mother. 7) She picks up her daughter at the orphanage, then tells the press “Oops! Second baby got reclaimed, Imma just adopt this one baby WHO LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE MEEE!!!!” (This might be the point when Mandy Moore in Saved! drives her minivan into the tree). 8) She refuses to tell her daughter the identity of her real parents, even when the daughter’s HUGE CLARK GABLE EARS betray her true identity to all of the world. (According to lore, the daughter only learned that Gable was her father when some grade school brat told her so.) But again — and this is crucial — no matter how much people gossiped about this child’s ears as she grew older, it was a rumor, not a scandal. Young, working with the help of the MGM Fixers, wove a tale that seemed believable.

Café racer, originally pronounced {kæfei} racer, is a type of motorcycle as well as a type of motorcyclist. Both meanings have their roots in the 1960s British counterculture group the Rockers, or the Ton-up boys, although they were also common in Italy, Germany, and other European countries. In Italy, the term refers to the specific motorcycles that were and are used for short, sharp speed trips from one coffee bar to another. Rockers were a young and rebellious Rock and Roll counterculture that wanted a fast, personalized and distinctive bike to travel between transport cafés along the newly built arterial motorways in and around British towns and cities. The goal of many was to be able to reach 100 miles per hour (called simply “the ton”) along such a route where the rider would leave from a cafe, race to a predetermined point and back to the cafe before a single song could play on the jukebox, called record-racing. They are remembered as being especially fond of Rockabilly music and their image is now embedded in today’s rockabilly culture.

The term cafe racer is still used to describe motorcycles of a certain style and some motorcyclists still use this term in self-description. Worthy of mentioning here is that an entire new sub-culture has evolved since the heyday of the Rockers. The ‘cafe racers’, a term that existed in the 1950s and 1960s to refer to bike riders of the race

dress in a more modern and comfortable appearance with only a hint of likeness to the Rockers style. Common Levi jeans, generic motorcycle jackets, boots and/or shoes with modern helmets being the norm, instead of the very specific brand names, styles and look established by the Rockers. These cafe racers have taken elements of the American Greaser, British Rocker and modern motorcycle rider look to create a style all their own.

Classic cafe racer style has made a comeback recently, thanks largely to the increased interest in vintage motorcycles in general. The baby boomers were responsible for a surge in motorcycle sales in the late 1960s and ‘70s, and many of this generation now find themselves with the time and discretionary income to recreate the bikes they had—or wished to have—in their younger years. A new generation of motorcycle designers and builders is using the style as a fresh alternative to the custom chopper scene. Furthermore, in many parts of the United States, there are large numbers of stock 70s and 80s era Japanese motorcycles available for relatively small amounts of money -- in many areas a running motorcycle can be had for well under $1000. There is a strong appeal to younger and less wealthy motorcyclists to build a cafe racer from one of these bikes and end up with a stylish personalized motorcycle at a fraction of the cost of a newer bike. Opinion often differs as to the benefits of attending a career fair. For every one person who can tell a story of landing their dream job thanks to a career fair, there seems to be dozens more stories of how career fairs don’t yield the desired results. While there’s no guarantee a career fair will end up with an employer-employee match made in heaven, there are steps job seekers can take to make the most of a career fair. * Get a head start. Thanks to the Internet, it’s now easier for job seekers to make themselves known at career fairs. Pre-registering for a career fair, as opposed to simply showing up on the day of, often requires registrants to upload a resume. This gives prospective employers an opportunity to pre-screen potential applicants and make a note of who they want to contact at a career fair. * Be prepared. A career fair should not be considered a simple meet-andgreet. Job seekers should prepare for a career fair as if it were a job interview. Everyone knows the value of making a strong first impression, and job seekers can do just that by preparing to answer any questions prospective employers might ask. While a career fair might seem less formal than a typical job interview, it should not be treated as such.

* Bring more than yourself. Today’s job market is incredibly competitive, and standing out at a crowded career fair won’t be easy. That said, job seekers should bring a portfolio of their best work. This doesn’t have to be everything, but individuals should choose a handful of work samples that illustrate their talents and experience. * Dress the part. Attire is also important when attending a career fair. Just because a career fair is on a Wednesday afternoon does not mean job seekers should dress like it’s a typical lazy Wednesday afternoon around the house. Conservative business attire should be worn, and remember it’s always preferable to overdress than underdress. * Follow-up. Companies with a table or booth at a career fair are going to receive an overwhelming amount of resumes, particularly with such high unemployment rates. That said, it’s a good idea for job seekers to do some followup with recruiters. Take their business cards and follow-up with them after the event. Call them that night and leave a voicemail thanking them for their time and insight, or e-mail them a thoughtful letter expressing similar sentiments of gratitude. Also, reiterate interest in the company and any available positions discussed during the career fair. Before hanging up the phone or sending the e-mail, be sure to promise a follow-up phone call during business hours, and make sure that phone call is made.

Sports News The Saints made a big splash with the signing of Darren Sproles By Lenny Ignelzi

But, as Saints fans will soon discover, Sproles plays bigger than his stature. “He’s tougher than Reggie Bush, mentally and physically,” said former NFL offensive guard Ross Tucker, who serves as an analyst for SI.com and Sirius Radio. “All of his life he’s been the littlest dude ever, and he plays that way. He plays physical.” New Orleans Saints equipment managers hardly had time to remove the adidas sneakers from Reggie Bush’s locker Friday before his replacement had been targeted and signed. Mere hours after the ballyhooed trade of Bush, New Orleans agreed to a four-year deal with Darren Sproles, a prized free agent scatback from the San Diego Chargers. The Saints beat out a pair of NFL heavyweights for the diminutive dynamo. The Philadelphia Eagles and Chargers also were interested in his services, and listening to New Orleans officials and NFL observers talk, the little man might be the Saints’ biggest acquisition of the frenzied free-agency period. “I think it is awesome,” New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees said Friday. How awesome? Brees said the Saints’ attack might be more dangerous and multi-dimensional with Sproles than Bush, if that’s possible. Like Bush, Sproles can do a little of everything. He can catch passes out of the backfield, and he’s an elusive runner -- between the tackles and around the edge. And perhaps most important, he’s a dangerous returner on kickoffs and punts. All this production from a pint-sized package. I don’t know what the official record is for smallest Saint, but Sproles is a

challenger to the mantle. Kicker Garrett Hartley could post up Sproles, a 5-foot-6, 181-pounder. He plays physical.” Sproles had a powerful ally in New Orleans. Brees courted Sproles for the past few months with almost as much ardor as he did wife Brittany at Purdue. Brees started working his former Chargers teammate in March. He texted him and called whenever possible, and he whispered in his ear during workouts near their offseason homes in suburban San Diego. Brees said he competed with Washington quarterback John Beck for reps with Sproles during passing drills, knowing the Redskins would be a potentially dangerous and deep-pocketed competitor for his services. When Bush was dealt Thursday, Brees intensified his recruitment. “’We need you baby, come join us, you’ll fit in great, win a championship, let’s break some records, let’s do something special, let’s go,’” Brees said. “I pulled out all the stops.” As usual, Brees succeeded. Sproles agreed to terms on a fouryear deal that will pay him an average of $3.5 million per season, a significant discount from the money Bush received last season and demanded this year. “Let me get this straight, not only are the Saints getting a better player (than Bush), but they’re paying the guy less money for more years? Unbelievable,” Tucker said. “I love this move for the Saints.” Tucker isn’t alone. The move was universally praised league-wide. Former NFL executive Michael Lombardi has long contended that Sproles is better than Bush. Ditto Greg Cosell, a longtime producer and talent evaluator for NFL Films, who tweeted Thursday morning: “Sproles (is a) better player than Bush. Equal ability as satellite player on perimeter in pass game; tougher, more physical runner. Upgrade.” Said Brees: “You look at Reggie’s athleticism and the match-up problems that he provided for us. Sproles is that same guy. I think he maybe even adds an element that we haven’t had.” New Orleans Coach Sean Payton said Sproles’ role will be similar to the one Bush played for the past five seasons but didn’t go into much detail. With his versatility and elusiveness, though, Sproles brings a Bush-like skill set to a backfield loaded with talent -- Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Lynell Hamilton and eventually Mark Ingram. “He’s dynamic,” Payton said. “He’s a guy that when you put on the tape he jumps out at you.” Sproles won’t arrive in town for a couple of days. According to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, he can’t practice until next week, so he’ll have a day or two to gather his things before joining his new teammates.

Cleopatra (1963)

Lets face it; this film, starring Elizabeth Taylor, has become as much of a legend as Cleopatra herself! My recommendation is that you buy the 3 disc remastered collectors set--then you can see it in all of its intended glory. Spactacular acting, costumes, scenery, make-up and effects make this a must see movie for everyone. And also, it was not a ‘flop’ as some people have mentioned; its one of the highest grossing movies of all time, but its just that its huge budget eclipsed this. And who can fail not to be enthralled by the real life love story that was taking place at the time with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton? It has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, love story of the 20th century! And you can see it all take place right here in this movie. Watch this movie, as you will love it.

The Birds (1963)

What I love about this film is that it`s so understated. There is absolutely no attempt whatsoever to explain why the birds are turning against humanity , indeed there`s a scene in the cafe where a character points out that bird species joining together to wage war against the human race would be impossible , and the concept is totally ridiculous but Hitchcock and screenwriter Evan Hunter ( Using the basic premise of Du Maurier`s short story - the screenplay is almost totally original ) manage to leave the unsettling thought that this might just happen one day. The film is slightly dated in some ways , most notably the FX which are sometimes obvious back 9.5. in. projection , but this was made in 1963 don`t forget And THE BIRDS does contain some classic scenes like the discussions in the diner , the downbeat ending and the bit where the woman walks into the farmhouse and finds .... no I won`t spoil it for you . I rate this as Hitchcock`s best film .

Purchase Now! “THOUGH THERE are some disagreeable things in Venice, there is nothing so disagreeable as the visitors,” wrote Henry James of the fabulous city on the sea.

I suppose Mr. James did not consider himself as a visitor? NEXT MONTH, a whole lot of visitors will descend on Venice. Movie people, models, wannabes, has-beens, never-weres, probably a few athletes. If Venice is truly unlucky, reality TV creatures will go all gondola. And of course, the media will be there in droves. These mostly agreeable people gather for the annual Venice Film Festival, which runs Sept. 8-18. I am especially interested in this year’s event. Fascinating films will be shown, in and out of competition, including Roman Polanski’s “Carnage,” Andrea Arnold’s “Wuthering Heights,” “Wilde Salome” (directed by Al Pacino) and Abel Ferrara’s “4.44 The Last Day on Earth.” But, the movie whose reception I am most anxious to hear about is “W.E.” directed by Madonna. This film weaves two corresponding tales -- one about the kingdom-shaking romance of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; the other about a young modern woman, fascinated with the tale of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. Nothing Madonna has ever done professionally -- no album, no concert, no acting job -- has consumed La Ciccone as has “W.E.” She’s poured everything she’s got into the movie. To say it has been an exquisite labor of love would be vastly understating her effort, commitment and talents. Aside from possibly a few of her four children and perhaps a gentleman to hold her hand, Madonna will surely be accompanied in Venice by Harvey Weinstein, whose company will release the movie later this year. After “W.E.” shows in Venice, it moves on to Toronto. Some people might assume Madonna will be a little wistful in Venice, recalling the voluptuous girl writhing along the fabled canals in 1984’s classic video “Like a Virgin.” But they’d be assuming incorrectly. Madonna never looks back. She is totally in the now and in the future. She probably doesn’t even remember the 1980s anymore -- that was another life; she was another person. And so were the rest of us. Remember the shock waves caused by a pop song with the word “virgin” in the title? PARIS HILTON and Lindsay Lohan are friends again. To be honest, this might not be a bad thing for . . . Lindsay. Really! Miss Hilton has earned a fortune and has kept out of trouble since her famous jail-time a few years back. Indeed, she is rather respectably off the radar now. It might not do Miss Lohan any harm to hang around with Paris. On the other hand, despite her merchandising success, Paris was sincerely miffed recently when an interviewer implied that her best days as a “celebutante” were over.
