elta Goodrem says she won’t bow to the pressure in the music industry to make raunchy video clips to sell songs. The 27-year-old star said she planned to keep her clips classy and appropriate for all ages. “I always want to be able to be an artist that enables all families to come to the show,” Goodrem said. “I’m fascinated by life, you know, that’s who I am (and) I love talking about life, love, the universe and everything so I don’t feel the need to do videos that go where I don’t feel they need to go because I’m talking about life lessons.” Goodrem, who has sold more than six million albums worldwide and has eight No.1 singles and three No.1 albums to her credit, has maintained a wholesome image and said she won’t be compromising it anytime soon. “Always at heart I’m just going to be who I am, at this moment, and I still don’t feel the need to go to certain places in videos,” she said. The singer-songwriter, who was thrust into the spotlight as a teenager, said she has noticed an increasing interest in her girl-next-door image. “I’ve noticed people mentioning it lately,” she said. “They’re like, ‘My kids can watch your videos and we can feel safe that when we leave the room they can still watch them’.” But, Goodrem said she wasn’t one to judge others.

Perhaps the reason is that we’ve heard it all before. “There is nothing new under the sun,” wrote the author of Ecclesiastes, but that doesn’t mean old ideas that worked in the past can’t be updated and applied to our time. Even Democratic politicians, including Governor Howard Dean, Senator Patrick Leahy and Independent Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders, have made the journey to this frozen-in-time hamlet to honor Coolidge, if not always his principles. Some of Coolidge’s contemporaries may have found his reserved New England manner boring, but some moderns are starting to reconsider the economic rules and political standards by which he lived. Another reason this presidential campaign has failed to ignite the public’s enthusiasm is that it seems more about politicians and their power and not enough about everyday realities; too many talking points and not enough getting to the point. Following President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” remark, the Romney campaign produced TV commercials featuring small business owners shar-

ing how they built their companies, often from scratch. The stories are interesting and compelling and it’s a tactic the campaign should use more often. Debating policies is academic. Showing real people who have been harmed by policies that aren’t working is how to connect with voters. “All liberty is individual liberty,” noted Coolidge. That sounds strangely foreign in an age where the collective is becoming supreme. “It takes a village” has come to mean a government village, not a village of individuals helping each other with government intervening only when individuals are not enough. Vermonters remain proud that after last summer’s floods they astounded FEMA by helping each other with greater speed and better results than government could produce. They call it the communitarian spirit. Neighbor is expected to help neighbor.

The Romney campaign should consider speeches and more campaign ads that feature people who have “made it” on their own, or who have overcome personal difficulties by embracing timeless truths. It should stop debating Democrats about tax “fairness” and start focusing on how much of our money government wastes. Republicans can never win a debate about “fairness,” even though it is unfair to disproportionately penalize the productive. Everyone understands waste, fraud and abuse. Romney needs an updated version of the “Golden Fleece Award” created by the late Senator William Proxmire (D-WI), who highlighted wasteful government spending. Two of my favorite Coolidge quotes should be modernized by the Romney campaign and sold to voters. One is: “I favor the policy of economy, not because I wish to save money, but be-

cause I wish to save people. The men and women of this country who toil are the ones who bear the cost of the government. Every dollar that we carelessly waste means that their life will be so much the more meager. Every dollar that we prudently save means that their life will be so much the more abundant. Economy is idealism in its most practical form.” The other attributed to Coolidge: “Nothing is easier than spending the public money. It does not appear to belong to anybody. The temptation is overwhelming to bestow it on somebody.” If Romney and his fellow Republicans reminded voters of a time when government respected small business, individuals and their earnings, this campaign would get interesting and consequential real fast.

SAVING AMERICA NOW FOUR DAY WORK WEEK (10-HOUR DAYS)

The ideas that will be presented in this article will be our attempt to restore America to its previous greatness. Some of our ideas have been presented in the past but need to be revisited. If American businesses were to go to a four-day, 10-hour work week, we could possibly create more jobs by filling that fifth day with temporary or part-time help! This will create three days off for people that went to the four-day work week. The days could be any combination during the week of work days. Example Friday through Sunday or SaturRichard Matz day through Monday. etc. People with three days off would spend more time and money for recreational purposes. This increase in revenue would be a bonus for every type of business from recreational to manufacturing, food production and consumption with the extended week end the people would have off. Think of the savings we would have on energy, gasoline, lighting, airconditioning, heating, and time commuting to and from work. We could also set up a (job for job) exchange to permit the people to be closer to their means of employment with employers consent. This is just one idea that might help create more jobs and revenue for all businesses in America. Dear Mr. Matz,

I agree with a lot of your synopsis, and I have solutions that if implemented would be beneficial and allow a transition back to where most politician would start serving the people instead of the special interest. I believe that the U.S. politician should be subject to term limits... President should be limited to one sixyear term, Senators should be limited to one six-year term, Representatives should be limited to one four-year term. Essentially that would take the some special interest money out of politics and politicians would no longer have to spend MOST of their time fundraising for the next election and they could concentrate on the people’s business. I also believe that since every state elects two Senators one should be a man and one should be a woman, because there is no way that a man can totally understand the special dynamics of the concerns of a woman. In business, I believe that if you own your OWN company you should be allowed to make as much money as that company can generate, but if the company has shareholders, I don’t believe that a CEO should be making 100s of millions of dollars. I believe that a CEO’s salary should be limited to no more than 100 times the lowest salary of an employee of

that company. This would encourage boards of directors to increase the lowest salaries, because it would then translate into a 100 times increase for THEIR salaries. In education, the U.S. should NOT be teaching every student as if they will be going to college. In middle school, students should be identified in 3 categories. One group will be going to college, another groups should be identified as going to a trade schools, ie auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, carpentry, electronics, etc. These trades cannot be outsourced and they are high paying jobs, and each city needs these professions. The 3rd group would have more time to decide their direction, their direction would be postpone until they go to high school. Maybe they go to college, maybe they go to trade school. The U.S. needs to finally determine (in health care) what is important for its people. Profit or people — which is more important in the needs of the American people? I also believe that companies should not be allowed to close their companies, take tax breaks, and then move their companies overseas. US taxpayers should not subsidize this behavior. So, these are some my thoughts that I believe would help the direction of the U.S. economy. What do you think?

Discovered by Oprah, the cardiothoracic surgeon has been emblazoned on the covers of Time, Good Housekeeping, Shape and Prevention, with editors reporting increased newsstand sales. “Oz understands the promotion world as he understands your lower intestine,” Richard Stengel,

everywhere on TV, recommended an antidepressant called Wellbutrin on the grounds that, unlike similar drugs, it did not suppress sexual arousal and, in some cases, actually enhanced it. What he didn’t say was that he had accepted two payments from GlaxoSmithKline totaling $275,000 for “services for Wellbutrin.” The payments were revealed in a complaint filed by the U.S. government in federal court, which resulted in a $3 billion settlement. Many stars reveal a conflicted attitude toward celebritydom. Alec Baldwin has flirted with the idea of running for public office and seems ubiquitous on the New York celebrity circuit, yet he made the columns last week for trying to punch a news photographer and became a hero of the tabloids by leaving phone messages for his daughter. A calmer persona emerges on Baldwin’s Capitol One Venture Card commercials. It seems appropriate that Baldwin played an important role in the latest Woody Allen film, “To Rome with Love.” One theme of the film is the mixed impact of fame — the life of an obscure citizen in Rome unravels when he becomes an instant celebrity. Woody himself, to be sure, has benefited from his fame by exercising total control over every aspect of his filmmaking. Yet few public figures seem more uncomfortable in any public setting than Woody, who fidgets, snaps and simply turns his back when confronted by admirers he does not recognize. Overall, the celebrity bandwagon is a seductive one in terms of lifestyle and payoffs, but dangers lurk at every turn. Plenty of billionaires are prepared to write a big check to ensure the appearance of a top performer at their birthday party or their son’s bar mitzvah, but Usher, Mariah Carey and Beyonce were embarrassed when Wikileaks revealed that Muammar Gaddafi had paid them $1 million in 2011 for a “special appearance.” Since Beyonce averages about $80 million a year (according to Forbes), she didn’t seem to need another payday from a notorious dictator. She ultimately gave back the money.

Los Angeles-based but New York-born Stange is on a quest to sing the Star Spangled Banner at all of the stadiums in the 50 states. The moniker, “National Anthem Girl,” arose organically, as she explained in a phone interview, and in a rush to perform at Qualcomm Stadium and to explain in a flash who she was and why she should get in quick. Janine has performed the rousing song much of her life at colleges, season openers, and even at an event with 55,000 attendees. Her first official performance on this campaign trail was July 3 in Tampa. Her next performance in San Diego will be August 19 at a car show — the Pacific Hot Rod Show. Who does she visualize when she sings? She looks for a member of the armed forces at the performance and keeps in her mind “their sacrifice.” Look for Janine Stange, the “National Anthem Girl,” �support her cause, and yes, what she wants to accomplish is Star Spangled!

MMA Report: 5 Questions with Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey Rousey will make her first title defense against Sarah Kaufman on August 18 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. She sat down with MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. last month to answer a few questions regarding her MMA career. AG: Your mother was a decorated judo champion; did she support your decision to practice judo? RR: My mother won the national championships in 1984 and she was the first American to do that. She didn’t want me to do judo at first because she felt that a lot of people would expect too much out of me because I was her daughter, but I was insistent on it and her friends convinced her otherwise, so she eventually acquiesced and things went well.

RR: What was the change? Partially, it was when I moved away from home and I had to speak up for myself and also after the Olympics I took a year just to bartend and it forces you to have conversations with people and it made me more comfortable approaching people just being able to talk. AG: What about the feistiness — where did that come from?

RR: My 11th birthday was my first tournament, so I count that (as my starting point). Yeah it was tough because I never went to a high school dance or the prom because I was always training on Fridays and Saturdays, and when you’re a 16-year-old girl with a cauliflower ear and ringworm, you never go to parties so it kind of affects your high school social life in a big way. I wasn’t really a social butterfly growing up and the way I carry myself now is

RR: The feistiness probably came from living away from home as a young girl and the houses were full of athletes where there was basically a bunch of ‘gym talk;’ the bartending where I was dealing with that social scene; and at home everyone is an academic. My mother has a PhD, my step father is a rocket scientist, and all my sisters have degrees so I had to develop these three entirely different sets of vernacular to be in those situations

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics alone, he set a record by winning eight gold medals, including the gold in the men’s 100 meter butterfly over Milorad Cavic of Serbia, as seen above — kind of. Phelps, on the left, touched the wall 0.01 seconds before Cavic, and to the naked eye, discerning that fact is impossible. Even a frame-by-frame look into the finish yields little in the way of certainty. And these slight margins are not limited to swimming. For example, in the 2004 Athens Olympics, the top four finishers in the men’s 100 meters finished a total of 0.04 seconds apart, with times of 9.85, 9.86, 9.87, and 9.89 seconds, respectively. With margins this thin, every factor may have an outcome on an Olympic race. Including the speed of sound. At sea level, the speed of sound (at sea level) is about 340 meters per second. The men’s 100 meters is an 8-man race, with each competitor in a roughly 1.22 meter wide lane. The runner in Lane 1 is, approximately, eight and half meters from the runner in Lane 8. If the starting pistol is fired next to Lane 1, the runner in that lane will hear it about 0.025 seconds before the runner in Lane 8. The same goes for swimming, and even more so. An Olympic pool is ten lanes long, with each lane spanning 2.5 meters. Assuming each swimmer is roughly in the middle of his or her lane, the swimmer in the first lane is about 22.5 meters away from the swimmer in the final lane. The time it takes for the sound to travel from Lane 1 to Lane 10? Six hundredths of a second. And when the gap between gold and silver (or bronze and not medaling) is less than that, there’s a problem. To solve for this, the Olympics (and other race organizers) have, for decades, wired the pistol to a microphone and relayed the sound to speakers situated behind each of those racing. The noise is relayed electronically and therefore moves much faster than the speed of sound, which should mitigate if not eliminate the problem. But going into the 2012 London Olympics, the organizers saw fit to improve upon the problem anyway. Why? In part, because some competitors were (perhaps subconsciously, to avoid false starts) unwilling to trust the electronically piped-in noise behind them and instead were “waiting” for the true sound to reach them. The 2012 London Olympics fixed the problem. As reported by The Atlantic, the London Olympic Games Organizing Committee decided to use the starter originally tested in the 2010 Vancouver (Winter) Games — an all-electronic “gun” by Omega, seen above. Gear Patrol explains how it works: “When the starter’s finger pulls the trigger, the classic “bang” is played through speakers behind each runner’s starting block [and only there], a visual flash is emitted and a pulse is sent electronically to the timing system. No smoke and the only drama is at the finish line.” And as an added bonus, you don’t need a permit to carry it around.

The competition pitted marines who were trained as recruits on the West Coast at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego against those who trained on the East Coast at Parris Island Marines. Having been narrowly defeated in 2011, the East Coast Marines proved that they were hungry for redemption. They started off the contest with high scores and maintained the lead over the West Coast Marines throughout the first half of the competition. It was a strong battle between the teams, as the West Coast Marines fought back to tie the score half way through the day. In the end, the East Coast Marines took the win ending the competition with final team scores of 43 to 35. Instead of a traditional prize purse, the teams competed for each other’s surfboards used in the competition (similar to racing for pink slips) as well as ultimate bragging rights. In the end the West Coast Marines were forced to give up their surfboards to the other team with the East Coast claiming ultimate bragging rights.

More Sailors eligible for incentive pay The Navy has expanded the number of ratings currently eligible for Sea Duty Incentive Pay, as announced in NAVADMIN 231/12, released July 30. Sea Duty Incentive Pay (SDIP) is offered to activeduty Sailors in pay grades E5 through E9 in communities that are undermanned at sea, and provides a monetary incentive for Sailors to extend their assignment at sea or curtail their shore duty to return to sea duty. SDIP eligible skills are evaluated at least quarterly, and updates are made to provide skilled and qualified Sailors in the exact assignments needed in the Fleet. Free, quality programs can launch vet careers

By Rick Rogers Host of Front & Center: Military Talk Radio From the mostly bad news on veteran unemployment, you might think the future bleak for men and women leaving the service. But it’s just not true. Opportunity does indeed exist for those willing to put in the time and effort. Just don’t expect success to chase you down. As we speak the next wave of successful business people are not saying, “It can’t be done” they’re instead figuring out how to do it. While you can’t teach desire, you can teach ways to funnel desire into successful actions. Here are a few terrific free programs that all veterans, troops and military families should know about. DLA Piper is a $2.25 billion law firm that has a soft spot for veterans and two offices in San Diego. Since 2008 DLA Piper has run a program entitled “Serving Those Who Serve Our Country.” The firm donates a whopping 5,000 hours a year to veteran causes in San

Diego and Southern California. They do great work and the average veteran knows absolutely nothing about them. Two of DLA Piper’s lawyers involved in this pro bono program were on my radio show recently and talked about what do and do not do. They don’t do criminal law. Back to school survival guide

Let’s all stretch in preparation for the zombie walk around the endless aisles of school supplies and school clothes. It’s back to school time again! Before you drag your kids out of bed, get bombarded with paperwork and fundraisers, here are a few tips to get yourself and the kids prepped to navigate this hectic next few months of the year! Before school season starts: • Bedtimes: One to two weeks before school starts, slip back into a routine. If you hear, “I’m not sleepy!” Have them un-glue their cell phones from their hands, cut off the tv and computer and relax. • Morning rush hour: Plan a morning routine. That way there is as little stress on everyone as possible and everyone will know what to expect. Older kids and parents can negotiate morning wake up times, clothing approvals, healthy snacks, etc. • Safety: In case the kids ever are home without you; update the chore chart and emergency contact information on the fridge, by the door, etc. (doctor’s name and number, parents, work and neighbors’ numbers). If you have younger kids, be thorough and write your name on everything. Regardless of age go over safety expectations. • Eat: During the madness don’t forget that kids will have a productive day by eating things like eggs; nuts, berries, fruits and cereals! Get creative and have fun!

One that plays a part through many of their concerns is having a life that is fulfilling and meaningful. That will more than likely be very different for each of us. But, we all have something that moves us, or gets us feeling good about life. In a song sung by Whitney Houston some time back, one that has been sung at the Olympics is, “One Moment In Time.” It has a special message in it that can, if reflected upon, motivate each of us to do our very best at the things we do, especially those things we have a passion for. The words of the song read; Each day I live, I want to be, A day to give the best of me. I’m only one, but not alone, my finest day, is yet unknown. I broke my heart, for every gain, to taste the sweet, I faced the pain. this song is the request to “give me” that “one moment in time.” Unless, which I feel she is, referring to what we are all given, times when we can shine and excel in our daily life. It is in those moments that we need to seize them and make the most of them. We will then feel that eternal joy. The question is then, what is that talent or passion that you get excited about? If you follow your heart, it will lead you to find the answer. Most people don’t recognize their talents right away. In most of us, it takes a little trial and error, time for discovery, to really know what we have talent for and what stirs our passions. However, it has been said, that by developing our talents we can bring joy to our own soul. Joshua L. Liebman said: “Many people go throughout life committing partial suicide, destroying their talents, energies, and creative qualities. Indeed, to learn how to be good to oneself is often more difficult than to learn how to be

good to others.” It is said that by truly discovering and increasing our talents is one way in which we can be good to ourselves, and it is also very likely that many other people will be blessed as a result of that goodness. Whatever the case, now may be the perfect time to dedicate yourself to study and learn about the particular medium that will work for you, and then do it. I have been taught this philosophy since I was young, and I have several areas that I am excited about pursuing right now. Whatever our desires, we need to push ourselves to make them a reality. Just dreaming about or thinking, “Well, maybe someday,” rarely will get the job done. To be able to really reach our potential, we need to move beyond the many selfimposed limits. We have so much within us if we would only give ourselves the joy of exploring. One author said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…we ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God.” That is what we really need to remember. Let us not do as William James has said, “Most people live…in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their soul’s resources.” By our persistence and hard work we can unlock our God given potential. Each of us has the ability and capacity within us to accomplish everyday things in very extraordinary ways. We can see it all around us if we are looking. We see those working to save lives in ER rooms or at the scene of an accident. We see single parents juggle all they have and still provide great homes. We see people of all walks come together when hurricanes and other emergencies present themselves. And we see those in foreign countries helping the innocent while at war and being fired upon. In closing, I would like to share with you a teaching I had come across some time ago that is now starting to get a lot of attention. It is called “The Secret.” This teaching is of a secret used by most of life’s masters. It is the secret of “The Law of Attraction.” As I have mentioned above, we all have talents and desires. What we need to do for ourselves is set the laws of attraction and intention in support of our desired outcomes. I hope to speak on this a bit more over the next couple of weeks. Till then try to find and watch the video. I believe it has something for everyone. We all have greatness within us. Learn what yours is and develop it. It is my hope that you give yourself that gift. It will bring you and others greater joy in the days ahead. Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don’t have film. He, who laughs last, thinks slowest. A day without sunshine is like, well, night. On the other hand, you have different fingers. Back up my hard drive? How do I put it in reverse? I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory. I feel like I’m diagonally parked in a parallel universe. She’s always late. engagement and marriage was quick. They hoped they had enough strength to live through their wedding day and night. After the marriage ceremony, they retire to a nearby hotel. Both are very nervous. Cautiously they begin to undress in front of each other. In the process, Mary, the old woman, removes her false teeth and puts them in a glass. Mary then removes her prosthetic leg and leans it against the wall. She looks up at her new groom and smiles nervously, and Steve is intently watching... Mary continues. Dwight Howard traded to L.A. Lakers in fourteam deal that sends Andrew Bynum to the 76ers and Andrew Igoudala to the Nuggets After frantic and frustrating negotiations, the Nets held out hope they could re-engage the Magic once Brook Lopez was eligible to traded midseason ... but now L.A. adds Howard to lineup with Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash amd Pau Gasol. Dwight Howard is joining the NBA’s latest Superteam in Los Angeles, as a long, Dwightmarish saga ended with the Brooklyn Nets as the unlucky losers. A deal sending Howard to the Lakers was ap-

proved by the league Friday afternoon, and the four-team, 12-player blockbuster has prompted plenty of head-scratching. After resisting overtures from the Nets and Rockets, the Magic settled on an underwhelming cap-saving package that included Al Harrington and Aaron Afflalo from Denver, Nikola Vucevic and Moe Harkless from Philadelphia, Josh McRoberts and Christian Eyenga from the Lakers, three first-round picks and two second rounders. Andrew Bynum goes to the 76ers as part of the trade, giving the Knicks and Nets a headache in the paint in their division. Current Olympian Andrew Igoudala was traded to the Nuggets.

He’s following in the footsteps of Shaquille O’Neal, who left the Magic for the Lakers as a free agent in 1996. The Magic was determined not to lose another franchise player for nothing, and Orlando managed to get Howard to waive the early termination option on his contract so that he remained with the team through next season. The deal to the Lakers kills that hope. Although Howard will become a free agent next summer, he’ll have monetary incentive to re-sign with the Lakers (and the Nets won’t have the cap space to make such a purchase without a massive overhaul of the roster). The Lakers hold Howard’s Bird Rights, meaning he can re-sign for five years instead of going elsewhere next summer for four years.

Chargers Report: Bigby looking to make big impact in the secondary. By Art Garcia Jr.

oping to get better play in the secondary and more physical at the safety position, Chargers GM A.J. Smith signed veteran free agent Atari Bigby over the off season. Describing himself as smart and athletic, Bigby sat down with MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. to discuss this upcoming season and why he chose the Chargers over some other teams wanting to sign him. AG: Welcome to San Diego, as a seven-year veteran what do you bring to this team? AB: What I want to bring to this team is a physical presence in the secondary, especially at home. I want to be territorial, none of that throwing over the middle – none of that. I want teams to think like, ‘they have things going on over there (on defense), where, for instance, ‘Eric (Weddle) gets a lot of picks – he makes plays on the ball.’ You (also) have Quenten Jammer and guys like that. I don’t want to be the same as anybody else. I want receivers (to think punishment) when they come over the middle, not in a dirty way, not like such a way where I’m going to be fined or anything like that. But in a football way – the way it was intended to be played. AG: Having won a Super Bowl with the Packers two years ago, why did you sign with a team who has missed the playoffs the last two seasons? AB: San Diego was number one on my list. I’ve been wanting to come here for a couple of years now and everything happened to fall into place this year and I jumped on it – exactly what I was looking for was looking for me. I’ve always been fascinated with the San Diego Chargers as a whole. I like the style of offense they ran; their ability to score touchdowns at a fast pace – and remember I’m coming from a place like Green Bay, so I’m familiar with a high-powered offense. Following a bout with cancer, later linked to Agent Orange exposure, the Glenn family detours to Germany where he is treated for testicular cancer. As soon as Joel clears flight status, he returns to Vietnam for another tour, serving as the commanding officer of an Army attack helicopter squadron and continuing his 3D photography and voice recordings. The special ends as Glenn, who eventually succumbed to cancer in 2007, ends his time as an Army Major in active combat, returning to his beloved Florida farm armed with a love of flight, a love of photography, a love of his family and his cherished photographs — the only 3D account of the Vietnam War in existence.

Entertainment The Bottom Line There are more missed punches than knockout blows in this self-serving if weirdly fascinating oneman theatrical tell-all.

ike Tyson doesn’t waste any time addressing audience concerns in his one-man Broadway show. After assuring us that we’ll all be leaving with our ears intact, he comically voices what everyone’s been thinking: “What the hell is Mike Tyson going to do onstage?” The answer is evident in the title of this self-serving evening directed by filmmaker Spike Lee. In Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, the former heavyweight champ is determined to deliver his side of the story, while settling some scores along the way. The results are weirdly fascinating, and actually in keeping with a long tradition of pugilists retreating to

the stage after their fighting days are over. Indeed, Tyson’s show is not even the first such event to hit New York this summer; he was beaten to the punch by the “Raging Bull” himself, 90-year-old Jake LaMotta, who briefly appeared in a bizarrely head-spinning evening of reminiscences and songs called Lady and the Champ. The atmosphere is set before the show begins, with the theater festooned with Brooklyn-centric banners and a DJ situated in a side box spinning classic records by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. When the curtain rises, Tyson, dapperly dressed in a dark suit, is sitting pensively on a stool as we hear Nat “King” Cole croon “Nature Boy.” But the mellowness doesn’t last for long, as he proceeds to deliver a fre-

quently profane, sometimes draggy two-hour monologue, written by his wife Kiki, which is punctuated by film footage and photographs projected on a large screen. Boasting about his standing as the youngest heavyweight champion of all time while assuring us that he’s no longer the angry young man he used to be (“I don’t even want to get into an argument”), he begins with an account of his hardscrabble years growing up in the tough Brownsville section of Brooklyn, where he quickly established a reputation as a formidable brawler while getting into constant scrapes with the law. He wound up in the local juvenile detention center so often, he jokes, “It was like Cheers to me … everybody knew my name.”

But all that changed when he began to be mentored by the legendary Cus D’Amato, who immediately saw the strapping teenager’s potential and set him on a path to boxing greatness. Tyson’s account of his close relationship with the elderly, ornery trainer, while peppered with humor — “I thought he was a perv, or something,” he says about their first meeting — is one of the evening’s more moving elements. Unfortunately, it’s contrasted with his lengthy harangue about his former wife Robin Givens, including a comically detailed description of spotting her making out with Brad Pitt in a car during their divorce proceedings. But despite his bitter insults directed toward both Givens and her mother, there’s otherwise little that’s revelatory other than his assertion that they continued to have sexual relations — he puts it rather more bluntly — even after they were separated. Tyson delivers an impassioned denial of the rape charge for which he was convicted in 1992. But he says little about his time in jail, other than to recite a laundry list of the many celebrities who visited him there, including — in a mention that gets a big laugh as a photo of her beaming face is projected behind him — Florence Henderson. Another figure who receives a heaping dose of his vitriol is Don King. “I made a deal with the devil,” he says of the controversial promoter, whose distinctive speaking style he mockingly imitates. Surprisingly, there’s very little attention paid to his many bouts, even his notorious 1997 ear-chomping of Evander Holyfield, of which he says simply, “I snapped.” He spends far more time vividly describing his 1988 street brawl with boxer Mitch “Blood” Green, who he claims was high on angel dust. At one point, Tyson does some shadow boxing, explaining that, “I’m gonna do this slow cause I’m an old mother------.” And he does indeed seem to be physically struggling at times, frequently out of breath and constantly wiping sweat off his head with a handkerchief he clutches throughout. Lee’s staging is mostly unobtrusive, with atmospheric lighting and musical cues being the dominant element. They often seemed to come as a surprise to Tyson, which probably reflected the fact that this was merely the second Broadway performance. There’s also some original black-andwhite film footage, including shots of pigeons that evoke the fighter’s longtime fondness for them. That the evening is clearly meant to be a statement of redemption is made clear in the final moments, when Tyson emotionally talks about the death of his 4-year-old daughter, his current sobriety and his determination to be a better husband and father. It provides an appropriately neat climax to this theatrical evening devoted to an otherwise very messy life. Presented by James L.
