esecration of the American flag by burning is a particularly provocative insult: in a country that prides itself on freedom of speech, flagburning is meant to test that freedom to its limits. There is currently nothing in the Constitution’s definition of freedom of expression that expressly declares flag-burning illegal. But many consider this a clear distortion of what the founding fathers fought for in the first place. So how should patriotic Americans react to an act that is intended to provoke some sort of reaction? Should an amendment be added to the constitution forbidding desecration of our national symbol? Or should they turn the other cheek, since such an amendment be a gratuitous desecration of the constitution itself? continues on page 4 >>>

atalie Wood (born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko July 20, 1938 – November 29, 1981) was an American actress. Wood began acting in movies at the age of four and became a successful child actor in such films as Miracle on 34th Street (1947). A well received performance opposite James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause (1955) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and helped her to make the transition from a child performer. She then starred in the musicals West Side Story (1961) and Gypsy (1962). She also received Academy Award for Best Actress nominations for her performances in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love with the Proper Stranger (1963). Her career continued successfully with films such as Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969). After this she took a break from act-

t the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, protestor Gregory Lee Johnson burned an American flag in front of Dallas City Hall. Johnson was charged and convicted with desecration of a venerated object. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned the conviction in 1988 and the Supreme Court took up the issue the following year. In Texas v. Johnson, the Supreme Court upheld the decision that burning the flag was a form of free speech. In 1990, Congress passed the “Flag Protection Act” which imposed a federal ban on flag desecration. Senators opposing bans on flag-burning includ-

ed Vietnam Veteran Bob Kerry, whose record as a war hero has brought other Democrats around. This Act was later struck down by the Supreme Court in U.S. v. Eichman. Congress has made four attempts since 1995 to circumvent the Supreme Court’s rulings by trying to enact a constitutional amendment banning desecration of the flag. None have passed. But although the constitutional amendment has not passed, the debate rages on the campaign trail. In Connecticut, Waterbury mayor Philip Giordano used to the flag-burning issue to launch his opening broadside against Democratic Senator Joesph Lieberman. Lieberman has voted consistently against the flag-burning amendment,

claiming that flag desecration is protected under the First Amendment. Giordano, who is mounting the most serious challenge to Lieberman in years, has claimed that by supporting the amendment, he will “zealously pursue protection of the flag.” And while that may not be the determining issue, Giordano feels that it articulates the difference between his own patriotism and Lieberman’s. On One Hand... Bans on flag-burning are clear violations of the free exercise of speech, a fundamental right in our democracy. Using the Constitution to promote patriotic sentiments would be a cynical abuse of legislative power. Those who support amending the Constitution to protect flags would establish a dangerous precedent that would erode our liberties. They are merely trying to score political points by appearing as the standard bearers of patriotism. Those who burn the flag are merely trying to provoke a reaction. Allowing them to proceed with this particularly abhorrent protest would prove that despite all they say, the U.S. is a country which honors freedom to speak. On the Other Hand... The flag deserves special legal protection because it is the ultimate symbol of our history and heritage. The U.S. flag is an important symbol of democracy. Allowing Americans to burn it insults the millions of citizens

now wearing the flag is a whole different topic! who have fought and died to protect our way of life. Using flag-burning as protest is not a legitimate form of expression because it doesn’t invite any sort of debate. Some standards of flag etiquette: The flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. It should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should never be used as drapery. It should not be used as part of a costume. No part of it should touch the ground or any other object when it is being lowered. It should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. The proposed Constitutional amendment would protect the flag under an exclusive federal trademark, making it available for use only under a government license. The House of Representatives has passed the amendment three times since 1995. The last time the Senate considered the legislation was in 1995. The Senate is expected to vote on the latest version of the flag protection amendment during the current session of Congress. In 1988 Gregory Lee Johnson was given a one-year sentence and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine for burning the flag in Dallas. He was protesting Reagan administration policies. Title 36 of the U.S. Code states, “When it (the flag) is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, the flag should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” In some of the most widespread flag-burning in American history, Confederate sympathizers burned the American flag in protest at rallies across the South in 1861. merican Legion Post 468 member Lloyd Bordner of Tower City took part in the 35th annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at American Legion Harry Heartter Post 468 in Tower City Sunday afternoon. Legion members and the Reinerton Fire Department burned 11, 000 to 16,000 flags. Old flags might never die, but they do become too tattered to be flown with dignity. A Schuylkill County American Legion post respectfully destroyed nearly 20,000 such tattered flags on Sunday amid patriotic songs, speeches and salutes. American Legion Harry Heartter Post 468 of Tower City burned the flags in their 35th annual flag retirement ceremony, billed as the largest ceremony of its kind in the nation. A tractor-trailer load of flags from throughout the country was destroyed during the ceremony in the American Legion park across from the post on state Route 325. “Most people don’t know what to do with their tattered flags,’’ said Eugene Strine, American Legion Post 468 adjutant and flag retirement chairman. “Flags have to be disposed of with respect. That’s what we do.’’ The United States Flag Code states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Owners of old flags are encouraged to contact a local veterans’ group and ask about flag disposal. Veterans’ organizations usually hold ceremonies to dispose of flags. Also, the Boyscouts of America uphold a tradition of collecting old worn flags to burn in ceremony. Flags become embroiled over race and nationalism!

federal court ruled that school administrators had the right to order California high school students to remove displays of the American flag from their clothing on Cinco De Mayo. Basing his decision on a concern that violence could result from the display of the American flag on the Mexican holiday, California District Judge James Ware ruled that administrators’ actions to censor the students did not violate the so-called Tinker standard, which protects students’ freedom of speech. On May 5, 2010, administrators at

Live Oak High School told students that if they didn’t turn their American flag-bearing shirts inside-out, they would be sent home for wearing what the school considered to be “incendiary” clothing. Fox News reported that the order came from Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez, who feared an altercation between Mexican-American students celebrating Cinco de Mayo and those wearing the U.S. emblem. Judge Ware ruled that the school was within its right to censor the students for safety purposes. “In contrast to Tinker, in which the

Supreme Court specifically noted that no threats of violence were made here Defendant Rodriguez was warned by two different students that they were

concerned that Plaintiffs’ clothing would lead to violence,” Ware wrote in his ruling. “These warnings were made in a context of ongoing racial tension and gang violence within the school, and after a near-violent altercation had erupted during the prior Cinco de Mayo over the display of an American flag.” Ware noted that while no violence actually occurred, it was reasonable for school officials to believe there would be negative implications for allowing the students to wear Americathemed clothing. “Because the school officials were responsible for the safety of Plaintiffs on a day-to-day basis, the Court finds that they did not violate the First Amendment by asking Plaintiffs to turn their shirts inside out to avoid physical harm,” he wrote. The Student Press Law Center reports the students will be appealing the decision to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. “If (school officials) believe that in 2009 there was evidence that students would become embroiled in some kind of dispute over race or nationalism, then it behooved them not to permit Cinco de Mayo celebrations to take place,” the students’ lead attorney said, according to SPLC. “Instead … they permitted one group to present their message and then disallowed my clients from presenting their message, which, by the way, was not intended to refute or to contest or to challenge the interests of the students who were celebrating Cinco de Mayo.” This article came out in 2010.

Gone But Not Forgotten Continued from page1 ing and had two children, appearing in only two theatrical films during the 1970s. She was married to actor Robert Wagner twice, and to producer Richard Gregson.

Death

In September and October 1981, Wood stayed in Raleigh, North Carolina where she, Christopher Walken, Louise Fletcher and other cast members did location work for the science-fiction film Brainstorm.[21] Although her husband Robert Wagner had a commitment to his series Hart to Hart in Los Angeles, he visited Wood in Raleigh once. Wood spent most of November in California shooting interior scenes, many of them utilizing special effects, with other cast members on the MGM lot in Culver City. Wood spent Thanksgiving at her Beverly Hills home with her husband, parents, sister Lana and secretary Mart Crowley. The next day, the Wagners and Christopher Walken went to Catalina Island for the weekend. On Saturday night, November 28, the Wagners’ yacht (Splendour) was anchored in Isthmus Cove. Also on board was the boat’s skipper, Dennis Davern, who had worked for the couple for many years. The official theory is that Wood either tried to leave

the yacht or to secure a dinghy from banging against the hull when she accidentally slipped and fell overboard. When her body was found, she was wearing a down jacket, nightgown, and socks. A woman on a nearby yacht said she heard calls for help at around midnight. The cries lasted for about 15 minutes and were answered by someone else who said, “Take it easy. We’ll be over to get you.” “It was laid back,” the witness recalled. “There was no urgency or immediacy in their shouts.” There was much partying going on in the waters of Isthmus Cove, though, and while it has never been proven that the woman calling for help was, indeed, Natalie Wood, no other person has ever been identified or come forward as having called out for help on that night. An investigation by Los Angeles County coroner Thomas Noguchi resulted in an official verdict of accidental drowning. Noguchi concluded Wood had drunk “seven or eight” glasses of wine and was intoxicated when she died. Noguchi also wrote that he found Wood’s fingernail scratches on the side of the rubber dinghy indicating she was trying to get in. Wood was 43 at the time of her death and is buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. Scores of international media and photographers and thousands of ordinary spectators tried to attend Wood’s funeral at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.

The cost of going green before we’re ready is like Henry Ford making and selling Model T’s before he built gasoline engines.

pparently the Environmentalists of the 20th Century must have used “Common Sense” when addressing the daily deposits of horse manure left behind when the rider and his horse departed the scene. I’m certain we all will agree there probably was a shortage of Meter Maids, in the days of horse and buggies, to write “Horse Poop Tickets”. A

hot steamy summers day in 1900 must have been a nightmare for folks on a shopping trip downtown, mercy me, horse poop and flies and there was no fly spray back then. Mind you, horses were the source of transportation across the world for hundreds of years. In the late 1950’s I never thought to ask my grandfather what the Environmental Protection Agency, of the day, tried to do to stem

human use of horse’s for a means of transportation, after all the stench was offensive, particularly when the wind was against you. Due to the alarming amounts of horse poop deposits on the streets and the flies it attracted, where were the occupy types to protest this senseless era of out and out pollution by every man, woman and child who came into town on a horse.

I guess we’ll have to conclude that in the early days of our America, “Common Sense” sort of ruled the day, everyday of the year. There is one fact that begs the question in today’s America, “Why is it that we must shelve “Common Sense” when dealing with the new “Green Era”, it all seems a bit more like we’re putting the cart before the horse. Since August 27, 1859 when Colonel Edwin L. Drake struck oil at a depth of 691/2 feet near Titusville, Pennsylvania, it was decades before we put the horses out to pasture, and started buying vehicles with internal combustion Engines. Thanks to Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller America launched the beginning of the industrial age. Mind you, the EPA was not yet invented, nor were environmental non - Realists. Somewhere along the line, over the past 4 decades, common sense became the enemy of modern man, and our society became infected with what we call “Political Correctness”. Faith in God, took a hit, Morality in America, took a hit, and America’s most favored traditional holiday christmas, has taken a “Big Hit” for the past couple of decades. What we have done to this most exceptional nation of wonderment is a national disgrace. The demise of dad, mom, and the kids, the all american family, all were an integral part of the great american backbone of one nation under god. If we were to harken back to the days of “Lassie” and the “17 cartoons on saturday morning”, we would recapture some of the wholesomeness of our America. Those were the days when we left the keys in our cars, and left our doors at home open at night. We don’t need a “Reality TV Show” to once again become the America envisioned by our founding fathers, certainly not the america some among us would like to reduce our living to one common denominator, MEDIOCRITY... Let us all hope that we don’t lose one of the most cherished attributes a country could have, “ America, the Land of Opportunity” God Bless America! “A country worth defending is a country worth preserving” Major General Michael Lehnert USMC Retired

Richard Burton’s ‘last letter’ to Liz – did it really exist? By Liz Smith

“THERE WAS no letter. My lawyer talked to ... other lawyers. And there was no ‘last letter.”

T

hat was said by Sally Burton, the fourth and last wife of Richard Burton. The widowed Sally never remarried after Richard’s death from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1984. The letter to which Sally is referring is one that the authors of “Furious Love” -- the bestseller about the grand passion between Elizabeth and Richard -- claim Richard wrote to Elizabeth just before his death. The note seemed to suggest they should get back together again. The authors said Elizabeth kept this letter “by her bedside” for 20 years. They claimed Elizabeth would not show it to them. Some back-story: In the immediate aftermath of Richard’s death, it was his second wife, Elizabeth Taylor who was treated by the media as Burton’s widow. It was Taylor’s collapse at her Bel Air mansion on the news ... it was Taylor’s grief that the magazine and newspapers headlined. When Sally

that after the publication of the book one of Elizabeth’s very closest assistants called this office in some distress to say that there “was no last letter,

decided -- in the face of the international frenzy -- that Elizabeth should not attend Burton’s funeral, Elizabeth agreed. Then Sally changed her mind, but it was too late. When Elizabeth did finally visit Burton’s grave, it was the inevitable, terrible mob scene. Sally has never spoken much about Richard and less about Elizabeth, but the subject of “the last letter” has clearly strained her patience. “I’m sorry,” Sally tells Britain’s Daily Telegraph. “I’ve felt it for some time. They were divorced twice so there seems to have been a bit of a problem. It’s a wondrously romantic story, but...” There was never any love lost between Sally and Elizabeth. Richard married Sally during the calamitous

Elizabeth never denied her love for Richard, and when she did speak of him, sometimes she’d say, “maybe we might have tried again” -- stressing her own sobriety as an impetus. (Her very last conversation with her stepdaughter Kate Burton was about Richard; how much she still loved him and missed him.) run of “Private Lives,” a joint venture Elizabeth hoped would rekindle their love. Apparently the Noel Coward play had quite the opposite effect!

But Sally doesn’t think Elizabeth was behind the tale of the infamous “last letter.” She believes it was a fiction devised by the writers. I can’t say for sure, but I do know

she never spoke of such a thing to me, ever. There is nothing resembling a letter by her bedside; she never said it.”

Entertainment & Gossip Some people thought the tale of the letter was “romantic.” Others were appalled. It was as if she was stealing Burton from yet another wife -- this time from the grave. Elizabeth never denied her love for Richard, and when she did speak of him, sometimes she’d say, “maybe we might have tried again” -- stressing her own sobriety as an impetus. (Her very last conversation with her stepdaughter Kate Burton was about Richard; how much she still loved him and missed him.) But Elizabeth Taylor was not a cruel woman. And I don’t believe she would have deliberately gone out of her way to hurt Sally Burton. Especially after more than 20 years, and all that Elizabeth had suffered physically. Those sufferings changed her. For the better. Even sans “the letter,” do I think Elizabeth and Richard might have tried for a “third time’s the charm”? I honestly do, and this is no reflection on Sally Burton, who has set up scholarships in Richard’s name and kept the actor’s flame burning. As much as the chaos of Elizabeth’s life repelled Richard at times, he was inevitably drawn back to it, to her, and to the publicity. He always saw himself as the tragic figure of Faust and Elizabeth as his Helen of Troy. He even made a movie about it. And Elizabeth didn’t seem to mind that it was she who was seen pulling Faust down to hell, cackling madly.

The cowboy answers “Chapped lips”. “Wow!” says the bartender. “It cures chapped lips?” “No, but it sure as hell keeps you from licking them. A man walks into a bar and says, “Bartender, give me two shots. One for me and one for my best buddy.” Bartender says, “You want them both now or do you want me to wait until your buddy arrives to pour his?” The guy says, “Oh, I want them both now. I’ve got my best buddy in my pocket here.” He then pulls a little 3 inch man out of his pocket. The bartender asks, “You mean to say, he can drink that much?” “Oh, sure. He can drink it all and then some,” the man retorted. So, the bartender pours the 2 shots and sure enough, the little guy drinks it all up. “That’s amazing!” says the bartender. “What else can he do? Can he walk?” The man flicks a quarter down to the end of the bar and says, “Hey, Rodney, go fetch that quarter.” The little guy runs down to the end of the bar, picks up the quarter and runs back down and gives it to the man. The bartender is in total shock. “That’s amazing!” he says. “What else can he do? Does he talk?” The man looks up at the bartender with a look of surprise in his eye and says, “Talk? Sure he talks. Bob Barker

7800 Beverly Boulevard, Hollywood: CBS TV City, where “Price Is Right” model Dian Parkinson alleged that game show host Bob Barker had coerced her into having sex with him, in a 1994 lawsuit she filed against him, charging sexual harassment. Barker denied the charges, claiming that she had actually seduced him, and he threatened to sue her for malicious prosecution. The case was dropped by Parkinson.

Heidi Fleiss

The Santa Monica Pier, at the west end of Colorado Avenue: Only in Los Angeles... in the summer of 1995, a despondent man attempted suicide by handcuffing himself and jumping off the end of the Santa Monica Pier, shortly after midnight. He was promptly rescued by three celebrity lifesavers: the “Hollywood Madam” (Heidi Fleiss), Michael Jackson’s plastic surgeon (Dr. Steven Hoefflin) and KNBC News’ medical reporter, Bruce Hensel. The trio had been dining at the a posh restaurant nearby (Ivy at the Shore), and decided to take a stroll on the pier. (Ironically, Dr. Hoefflin later made the news again in late 1997, when another surgeon accused him of fondling and exposing his celebrity patients while they were sedated. He strongly denied the charges — and countersued. An investigation by the Medical Board of California cleared him of the charges.)

Jack Nicholson

with his golf club, Jack allegedly got back into his own Mercedes and drove away. Nicholson was charged with misdemeanor assault and vandalism, and Blank sued him, claiming assault and battery. But the civil suit was settled out of court, and the criminal case was dropped. Jack later said, in his defense, that a friend of his had just died, and that he (Jack) had been up all night playing a maniac in a movie.

Quentin Tarantino

8478 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood: the trendy Ago restaurant, where “Pulp Fiction” director Quentin Tarantino allegedly punched out “Natural Born Killers” co-producer Don Murphy because he didn’t like what Murphy had said about him in a book, “Killer Instinct.” Daily Variety quoted Tarantino as saying afterward: “I really think I slapped some respect into the guy. We shook hands and agreed not to bad-mouth each other anymore.” Don Murphy subsequently filed a $5 million lawsuit against Tarantino, saying that Tarantino threatened him, then slammed him against a wall and punched and slapped him. Murphy gave this quote to Entertainment Weekly: “I didn’t say I wished Quentin Tarantino was dead. I didn’t say I wanted him dead. I just said I’d celebrate his death.”

Canon Drive, in Beverly Hills: the location of Mastro’s Steakhouse, where, on June 11, 2005, actor Omar Sharif (“Dr. Zhivago,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Funny Girl”) had an altercation with a valet parking attendant. In a lawsuit, the parking attendant accused the 72-year-old Sharif of berating him for not having his Porsche SUV waiting when he came out of the restaurant, hurling racial slurs at him (when the attendant refused to accept a 20 Euro note) and delivering “a blow to the face” that left him bloodied. The police report on the incident states that Anderson refused medical treatment and there were no visible injuries. Omar Sharif pleaded innocent to a misdemeanor battery charge.

Retired Marine makes historic swim

Jay Platt (www.JayPlatt.com), a retired U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, today swam 1.88 miles across the Mississippi River in handcuffs and shackles, while blindfolded, becoming the only person to have ever done so.

He did it to raise money and awareness for injured and wounded service personnel. Platt, who is one of three men to have swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco with his hands and feet bound (www.EscapeFromAlcatraz.com) did the swim as a way of showing that anything is possible. “This seemed like the perfect way to show others that they too can overcome great challenges in their lives, even though the obstacles they face may seem overwhelming.” Jay Platt enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17. During his career, he trained recruits as a Drill Instructor, led Marines as a Platoon Sergeant, taught survival skills as a Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival, and developed Marine leaders as a Marine Corps University Instructor and Advisor.. For Retirees, Selling Pensions A Risky Bet

In today’s tough economy, many people are doing whatever they can to make it through one more mortgage payment or survive other financial hardships that have reached their doorstep. For some retirees, that means selling their pensions for a lump-sum payment. “They don’t have a lot of other avenues to go to,” says Leslie Scism of the Wall Street Journal, who has reported on this trend. “For many people, it’s a way to get some quick cash.” Pensions are supposed to be protection for down the road. That’s how Joe Serina thought of the pension he earned from serving 22 years in the Navy. But in 2008, his wife left him and he had to pay child support. Serina found a company that promised retirees cash right away, but they had to hand over their pension checks for years. They asked that he reroute his pension check directly to their bank, every month, he says. The company gave Serina $57,000 up front in exchange for his $1,400 pension check every month for eight years. That comes out to $125,000 for the company that paid him the money; the equivalent of a 23 percent interest loan. “The more it sunk in, it really financially didn’t do anything better for me,” he says. Dr. Louis Kroot and his wife, Kathie, share Serina’s regret. After retiring from two decades in the military, Kroot says a miscommunication or misunderstanding caused him to not pay the full taxes on withdrawing his retirement fund. He ended up owing the Internal Revenue Service $70,000; money the Kroots didn’t have. In 2005, the Kroots made a deal with Structured Investments, the same company Serina used for his pension buyout. Again, they offered a lump-sum payment to Louis Kroot in exchange for eight years of pension checks. The Kroots managed to pay off their tax bill, but they still have two more years of handing over their pension checks to Structured Investments; they Use your phone’s QR code reader or even took out a life insurance policy made out to the company visit SaveAndInvest.org/MilitaryCenter just in case. Structured Investments didn’t respond to requests for comment on this story, but last August its founder, Steven Covey, told the Center for Public Integrity that the company’s practices don’t violate any laws. He says it isn’t loaning money; it’s paying for a commodity. With rare exception, American involvement in World War II was focused in Europe and the Pacific. Few acts of war took place on the North American continent, a function primarily of the United States’ geographic isolation. But this did not keep the Germans from attempting to bring the war Stateside. In fact, on June 13,

as were the Pennsylvania Railroad’s nearby repair yards. The plot failed when two of the conspirators instead attempted to defect. George Dasch, who headed up the team, went to the FBI in Washington, D.C. instead of to his Germanassigned target. He attempted to turn himself in and, with co-conspirator Ernst Burger (an American citizen), told the FBI about the plot — but the two were written off as mere nutcases. Dasch was not to be ignored, however. He returned to the FBI, dropped over $80,000 on the desk — money he received to execute the planned sabotage — and was taken seriously. After hours of interrogation, Burger and the other six Nazis were arrested. Justice was swift. In July, all eight would-be saboteurs — including Dasch — were convicted of various war crimes and sentenced to death by electrocution. On August 8, 1942, six of the eight were indeed executed, but Burger and Dasch were spared. Presi-

1942, four German operatives landed at Amagansett, New York, toward the eastern tip of Long Island. Three days later, another four Nazis came ashore at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, just south of Jacksonville.

Their orders? To wreak havoc on America’s infrastructure. The eight were trained as saboteurs and given targets: hydroelectric plants, a chemical plant, shipping locks in the Ohio River, and, of particular note, the railway industry. Hell Gate Bridge in New York, a four-track bridge which allowed for the transport of both passengers and freight across the East River bordering Manhattan, was specifically targeted, as was Newark, New Jersey’s main train station. Horseshoe Curve , a railroad pass in central Pennsylvania which connected the Pittsburgh steel industry to the industrialized population east, was also on the list of places to be sabotaged, 16 December 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

dent Roosevelt commuted Burger’s sentence to life in prison and Dasch’s to 30 years, and six years later (after the war), President Truman granted clemency to both so long as they accepted deportation to American-occupied Germany. The two lived out their remaining days — Burger lived to be 69 years old, Dasch died at age 89 — as men without a country. The U.S. viewed them as enemy combatants, never issuing them a pardon, while the pair’s German compatriots viewed them as traitors who turned on their fellow soldiers.

Bonus fact: The importance of Horseshoe Curve to the northeast United States was not something new to the World War II era economy. During the Civil War, the curve was guarded by Union soldiers, who believed (correctly) that Confederate troops had singled it out as a target — Altoona, where it is located, is roughly 120 miles northwest of Gettysburg.

Sports Interview

Art Garcia Jr. interviews Jorge Masvidal before the big fight

After an impressive victory over San Diego’s KJ Noons in June, Jorge Masvidal finally gets his longawaited shot at the STRIKEFORCE lightweight title when he faces champion Gilbert Melendez on Dec. 17 at the Valley View Casino Center. Sporting a record of 22-6-0, Masvidal not only guarantees a victory to MP Reporter Art Garcia Jr., but says he needs to win the by some form of stoppage because he doesn’t trust the judges if it goes to decision after five rounds. AG: Well you finally get your big shot at the title, how does it feel? JM: It feels good man; I’ve been waiting for this my whole life. It’s not just the belt, the belt is awesome to have but Gil’s got a good ranking – he’s ranked No. 1 and that’s what makes this fun. I’m fighting the best guy in the world and I get to prove that I’m the best in the world so that’s what it comes down to. AG: With this being a title fight, did you prepare any different because you’re fighting whom you consider the best? JM: No, I just do the same thing for every training

18 December 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

camp – I try to make sure my weight is right and make it a point to always go out there and do what I got to do, you know? AG: In a recent interview you said that you usually like to pound on people and make the punishment last, but you want this one to end quickly – is this true? JM: It’s not that I want it to end quickly, It’s just I don’t want to go to a decision against the champion after five rounds. A lot of judges be text-messaging while they’re judging when they’re supposed to be doing their job … or they’re … I don’t know what they’re doing – (maybe) they’re breast-feeding or something because they are not doing their jobs a lot of times. So this is one fight I don’t want to go the decision. I’m not trying to end it early, my style is to punish people over a period of time kind of like a Pernell Whitaker where he just keeps hitting you, keeps hitting you, keeps hitting you and making you miss. That’s something I try to relate myself to. AG: You talk about Whitaker, he out-pointed a lot

of guys and didn’t have a lot of power but when he did knockout guys it was with an accumulation of punches. Do you feel that you have the punching power or more of a cumulative effect when it comes to knocking guys out? JM: In my punches I think I got good amount of power. In sparring with the big gloves I drop people; in fights, I’ve been in fights and won with one punch. I’ve stopped several guys that have never been stopped until they fought me that were seasoned veterans. But I think mainly it’s my speed that makes me, where people don’t see the shots coming then all of a sudden the shot hits you and you’re done – it’s lights-out, you know? AG: Do you see aspects in Gilbert’s game that you can take advantage of? JM: Yeah, always man. I always see things… I don’t watch video of my opponent’s; obviously I’ve seen him fight because we both came up fighting through the ranks at more or less the same time as we came up. I don’t watch or study tapes (because) my coaches tell me what to do – but there are plenty

Sports Interview of holes (with Melendez’ style). AG: I come from a football background where studying videos is common, I would think you guys would all study film. However, having talked to you, UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominic Cruz and others, your coaches watch the tapes and develop a game plan for you to execute – why is that? JM: I don’t know. I have my personal reasons why, but I don’t know why they (other fighters) don’t. I mean, I used to watch tapes when I was younger but it was like disenchanting where I would go ‘I don’t need to train for this guy, this guy’s a bum – look how many holes he has or this or that.’ I wouldn’t train (hard), so I would rather not watch (opponent’s tapes). AG: Gilbert says although he’s fought guys similar to you, your style is different. Knowing that, and since you don’t want it to go to a decision, do you take the fight to him aggressively? JM: I don’t know, as the fight goes on I just go (with the action). By nature, I’m a counter fighter – if a guy is coming at me I’m moving back, making

him miss, counter-punching and making him pay every time he misses. If I’m the one who has to step on the gas pedal in this fight then that’s what I’m prepared for as well. AG: At the end of the night on Sept. 17, what do you predict? JM: Me with my hand up and the belt wrapped around my waist – that’s a guarantee, it’s going to happen. AG: Any particular round you plan to end it? JM: Whether it goes five rounds or one round, the belt is going back home with me, I guarantee. I might be losing all four rounds but in the fifth round I’ll get a stoppage. AG: How about a message to the fans? JM: Get ready San Diego, I’m going to bring that belt back home to Miami. I’m sorry to take it away from you guys, but that belt’s coming back to Miami.

Ringside:

Looking to rebound after two consecutive losses, Noons (10-4, 8KO’s) will face Billy Evangelista (11-1, 1KO) in a lightweight battle with the winner hoping to get a title shot at the victor between Melendez vs. Masvidal. Ironically, both Noons’ and Evangelista’s latest losses were to Masvidal. “I’m excited because I think this is the first time I’ve ever fought MMA in the city I live in. I’m super-excited and I’m glad they’re bringing STRIKEFORCE back to San Diego,” Noons said. “This is a pretty big fight town and I’m surprised they haven’t had more fights here. So I’m excited because both my family and friends are here.” Asked if this is the biggest fight of his career Noons replied: “I think every fight is the most important fight and every fight matters a lot. Coming off a tough loss I need to bounce back and get back in the win column, big-time.” If Noons, former Elite XC Lightweight Champion, wins and does not get a shot at the belt, he would like to get a rubber-match against former STRIKEFORCE We l t e r w e i g h t Champion Nick Diaz. In 2007, he earned a TKO victory over Diaz on a doctor stoppage in the first round and he lost a controversial five-round unanimous decision in the rematch last year in Diaz’ hometown.

Brian Gumbel’s version of an

NBA Team Lockout

The 2011 NBA lockout is the fourth lockout in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The owners began the work stoppage at 12:01 am EDT (4:01 am UTC) on July 1, 2011. The main issues dividing the owners and the players are revenue sharing and the structure of the salary cap. During the lockout, teams can’t trade, sign or contact players and players can’t access NBA team facilities, trainers or staffs. All preseason games and the first six weeks of the 2011–12 season through December 15, 2011, have been canceled. Some players have signed contracts to play in other countries, mostly in Europe and Asia, and most players have the option to return to the NBA as soon as the lockout ends. The lockout will remain in effect until the players, formerly represented by the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), reach a deal with the NBA owners. On November 26, 2011, the players and owners reached a tentative deal, including a 66-game season, with games commencing on Christmas Day.

The NBA owners are predominantly white, while the players are mostly black.ESPN noted that William C. Rhoden in his book $40 Million Slaves had earlier dealt with the topic of players as “slaves” in spite of earning millions of dollars. Stern dismissed Gumbel’s comments as “an occupational hazard” of being the NBA commissioner.

“Modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys . . . keeping the hired hands in their place.” – Bryant Gumbel

The cancellation Impact of each month of the season cost the players around $350 million in lost pay.

The cancellation of each month of the season cost the players around $350 million in lost pay. According to CNBC, the average player lost $220,000 after the first missed paycheck on November 15. As of October 25, an estimated 400 NBA jobs were lost due to layoffs and attrition since the lockout—around 200 in the league office and another 200 among the 30 teams. As the lockout dragged on toward the holiday season, many NBA arenas workers felt the impact. Many of them work part-time in order to supplement their income or to simply pay bills and they cannot get the money they could have earned from the cancelled games back. The NBA needed three to four weeks to start the season once deal has been finalized for the 2011–12 season. The league will build a new schedule from scratch based on available arena dates. In October, the league allowed arenas in Los Angeles and Chicago to reassign NBA dates for other events. The number of games between conferences could be affected as was the case in the 1999 lockout, when each team played only five or six interconference games in a 50-game schedule. Normally, each team plays teams in the other conference twice each. We wouldn’t mind being on the plantation with that kind of pay and work conditions. We invite you into a discourse, and would like to hear your thoughts. rmatz@militarypress.com or trevor@militarypress.com

Bryant Gumbel Bryant Gumbel on his HBO Real Sports show in October likened Stern’s role in the lockout to a “modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys ... keeping the hired hands in their place.” The NBA owners are predominantly white, while the players are mostly black. ESPN noted that William C. Rhoden in his book $40 Million Slaves had earlier dealt with the topic of players as “slaves” in spite of earning millions of dollars. Stern dismissed Gumbel’s comments as “an occupational hazard” of being the NBA commissioner. In early November, Kessler criticized the owners’ “take it or leave it” bargaining approach: “Instead of treating the players like partners, they’re treating them like plantation workers.” Hall of Famer Magic Johnson called the comments “ridiculous” and defended Stern’s record of promoting blacks. ESPN The Magazine said that the NBPA did not condone Kessler’s statements, and they had intentionally avoided getting involved with Gumbel’s earlier remarks. Kessler later apologized for his comments.

wo prisoners in the American South, African-American Noah Cullen (Poitier) and John “Joker” Jackson (Curtis), escape from a chain gang. Despite their mutual loathing for each other, they are forced to cooperate, as they are chained together. Gradually, they begin to respect and like each other. Cullen and Joker flee through difficult terrain and weather, with a brief stop at a village where they attempt to break into a general store, in hopes of obtaining food and tools to break the chain that holds them together. Instead, however, they are captured by the townspeople, who form a lynch mob; they are saved only by the interference of “Big” Sam (Chaney), a man who is appalled by his neighbors’ bloodthirst. Sam persuades the townspeople to lock the convicts up and turn them in in the morning, but that night, he secretly releases them, after revealing to them that he is also a former chain-gang prisoner. Finally, they run into a young boy named Billy. They make him take them to his home and his mother (Williams), whose husband has abandoned his family. The escapees are finally able to break their chains. When they spend the night there, the lonely woman is attracted to Joker and wants to run off with him. She advises Cullen to go through the swamp to reach the railroad tracks, while she and Joker drive off in her car. The men agree to split up. However, after Cullen leaves, the woman reveals that she had lied - she sent Cullen into the dangerous swamp to die to eliminate any chance he would be captured and perhaps reveal where Joker had gone. Furious, Joker runs after his friend; as he leaves, Billy shoots him. Wounded, Joker catches up to Cullen and warns him about the swamp. As the posse led by humane Sheriff Max Muller (Bikel) gets close, the escapees can hear the dogs hot on their trail. But they also hear a train whistle and run towards the sound. Cullen hops the train and tries to lift Joker on as well, but is unable to drag him aboard. Both men tumble to the ground. Too exhausted to run anymore, they realize all they can do is wait for their pursuers. The sheriff finds Cullen singing defiantly and Joker nearly passed out in his arms.

2011 Ford Mustang GT “Fallen and Wounded Soldiers” by Webasto The “Fallen and Wounded Soldiers” Ford Mustang GT by Webasto is a special muscle car that was the result of a collaboration among some of the world’s foremost Mustang tuners. But more importantly, this Mustang was born to raise awareness and money for The Fallen and Wounded Soldier’s Fund (FWSF), a nonprofit organization focused on helping service members with medical costs, transportation, and other financial assistance. In building this special edition Mustang, Webasto sought the help of some of the best tuners around, and knowing the nature of this build, a lot of companies answered Webasto’s call. There were a number of new styling touches done when building and re-touching the exterior of the Mustang, including the addition of a new front fascia and grille from Roush; new side rockers and a rear lower fascia from 3d Carbon; a Hollandia 322L spoiler sunroof, hood struts, and new paint from MRT; a custom Fallen & Wounded Soldier graphics on the bonner of the muscle car; and a new set of 20” Modulare Forged, custom 3-piece wheels.

Inside, the Mustang was likewise treated to a plethora of modifications beginning with an extensive leather treatment from Katzkin, as well as a new gauge pod from Ford Racing and Auto Meter gauges. In addition to all the aesthetic and aerodynamic modifications, Webasto also wanted a Mustang with a modified engine set-up. So they took the Mustang’s 5.0-liter V8 engine and added a Roush supercharger with a JLT cold air intake, a McLeod RXT twin disc clutch, a Barton short throw shifter, an MRT MaxFlow H-pipe & Interceptor axle-back exhaust, and a VMP custom tune. All of these enhancements allowed the Mustang to break open its output from 412 horsepower all the way up to 700 horsepower. Now that’s an output worthy of our soldiers.

Model Maryeve Dufault looking at a career in NASCAR There’s no denying that motorsports is still a male-dominated sport, but over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of skilled and able women drivers participate in varying levels of competitive racing. And while some have been more successful than others, the growing number of lady racers has become a fresh of breath air on a sport that has long been considered a “man’s league”. From the Danica Patricks to the Jodie Kidds and the Susie Stoddarts, there’s no shortage of talent for the fairer sex when it comes to sitting behind the wheel of a racer and going bumper-to-bumper with some of the best male racers in the world. With all these names already in the fold, we come to Maryeve Dufault, an upand-coming racer that’s scheduled to make her NASCAR debut in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal this weekend. Though not as popular as some of her veteran contemporaries, the Quebecborn Dufault has exhibited great skills as a race car driver through her stint in the ARCA feeder series. But more than her talents on the track, Dufault has also been turning heads recently because, in so many words, she’s hot. As in really, really hot. As in modelcaliber hot with a list of credits to her name, including a stint with the New York Euphoria team in the Lingerie Bowl and on The Price is Right. We don’t know exactly how Dufault’s going to do in her baptism of fire in the world of NASCAR, but we certainly wouldn’t mind seeing her in action behind the wheel of a stock car or, you know, that whole modeling thing she does. Latest News: Elves fired! North Pole shut down

Christmas 2011: Birth of a new tradition A

s the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods —merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone — yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber? Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, Americanowned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates. Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course. There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn’t

about big national chains — this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open. How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy? Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would love the services of a local cleaning lady for a day. My computer could use a tune-up, and I know I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running. OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.Honestly, people, do you really need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice big tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about us, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine. This is the new American Christmas tradition. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn’t that what Christmas is about?

Imported holiday gifts People shopping for toys and presents this holiday season who are also trying to be conscientious of buying American or Canadian may want to pay more attention to the items they are getting. According to research by the U.S. Census Bureau, for the 2010 holiday season, $5.1 billion in toy imports originated in China. China was the leading country of origin for stuffed toys coming into North American ports, as well as for a number of other popular holiday gifts. These include roller skates ($37 million), sports footwear ($218 million) and basketballs ($32 million). China also is the leading supplier of ice skates, with Thailand and Canada ranking second and third for manufacture. Artificial Christmas trees and decoration are also big business for China. The U.S. imported $488.5 million worth of Christmas tree ornaments from the country last year and $28.2 million worth of artificial trees. There are some locally made toys, however. The U.S. has over 700 locations that make everything from games to dolls to children’s vehicles. California leads the nation with the most domestic toy/game production locations.

Why do the poor give more?

I

n times of an economic uncertainty, it can be difficult for the average person to come up with a few dollars to donate to charity when they might be struggling to pay their bills. However, statistics indicate that people who have the least to give tend to give the most. A 2009 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that income groups who made between $10,531 and $19,301 gave 4.3 percent of their income to charity. Those who made roughly $150,000 and up were less apt to give, donating only around 2 percent of their incomes. These numbers are not an anomaly. For decades, surveys have shown that upperincome people don’t give away as much of their money as compared with the poor, who are often very generous. Analysts have tried to determine what makes a person who has less money give away much of what they have even if it means compromising their own standard of living. Although the rich and the poor may have compassion enough to give, the lower-class may be better able to relate to those who are in similar situations. These poorer people may be more connected to other poor people around them. Upper-class individuals may be more detached from the plight of the less fortunate. Many of the more charitable givers of lower economic standing tend to be religious or spiritual as well. Some have said that they believe the more they give away the more they will get in return, which is often a basis for charity in the first place. Others quote being less worried about money and poverty is a reason they give. Still, there are others who give simply because it makes them feel good. Living with minimal means can often be a challenging time, and putting a smile on someone else’s face could be a way for poorer people to brighten their own days.

Just Win, Baby: Remembering Al Davis By David Exum

As a kid growing up in Boston in the 1970s and completely obsessed with anything to do with professional sports, I couldn’t help admiring Al Davis, who passed away Saturday at the age of 82, and his rebellious Oakland Raiders. “I had a dream ... that someday, I would build the finest organization in professional sports,” David told NFL Films. Who can forget the likes of Oakland’s quarterback Ken “The Snake” Stabler? Kids in my neighborhood idolized plenty of giants from that era such as Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw. But for me and my friends, we couldn’t help being mystified by Davis, Stabler, and tight end Dave Casper. Even though I was only 10 years of age at the time, I’ll never forget that 1976 playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Raiders. Earlier that year the Patriots crushed Oakland at home, the Raiders’ only loss during the regular season. When the two teams faced off in the wild card game, I thought for sure the Patriots would roll over Davis’ Raiders once again. Late in the fourth quarter the Patriots had the lead until Ray “Sugar Bear” Hamilton was penalized for roughing the passer. The ball was spotted on the 1-yard line and it was first and goal for Davis and his Raiders. I’ll never forget my father screaming at the television set that the Patriots had been ripped off. With 10 seconds remaining and the Patriots ahead, 21-17, “The Snake” snapped the ball, rolled out of the pocket, and scored on a quarterback keeper. That was the day, Saturday, Dec. 18, 1976, in which Al Davis and his Oakland Raiders became the villain to me and my friends. From that day on, whenever my friends and I would play a pickup game of football, one of the teams would always be the Oakland Raiders. Longtime Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan said it best on an NFL Films program entitled “The 10 Most Controversial Calls in Football.” “They (Patriots) were the best team in football and they got screwed,” said Ryan. But no matter what you think of that pivotal 1976 playoff game, Al Davis and his contributions to professional football are like no other. Davis, who has enshrined nine players into the Hall of Fame, to me was always much more than just some executive who bankrolled a team and sat in a luxury box during every home game. It’s important to remember that Davis and other owners like Billy Sullivan (founder of the then Boston Patriots) took a chance and were pioneers of the American Football League. What Davis and other owners did at the time took guts. While those teams didn’t play against the NFL until years later (1969), they introduced professional football to areas of the country that only watched it on television at the time. Davis was such a visionary, too. His slogans like “Just Win, baby” and “Commitment to Excellence” are enduring images to sports fan all across the country and especially for me. Besides all the great players that played for Davis, he should also be remembered for bringing to football fans the greatness of John Madden. Under Madden’s tutelage, the Raiders won six division titles during the 1970s, including Super Bowl XI. May he rest in peace
