Ermey Sorry for Obama Rant By Bryant Jordan
Retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey has issued a public apology for exploding into a drill instructor-like rage against the Obama administration. The onetime Leatherneck and latter day actor has become an iconic figure in the Marine Corps and the civilian world since his role as the foul-mouthed Gunny Hartman in the movie “Full Metal Jacket” 24 years ago. Ermey was representing the Marine Corps’ “Toys for Tots” charity in December at the Venue Room of the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond when he launched into a tirade over the Obama administration’s handling of fiscal policy, saying the economy “really sucks.” “Now I hate to point fingers at anybody but the present administration
probably had a lot to do with that,” Ermey said. “And the way I see it, they’re not going to quit doing it until they bring this country to its knees.” As some in the auditorium cheered, Ermey exhorted the public to “rise up and stop this administration from what it is dong, because they’re destroying this country. They’re driving this country into bankruptcy so they can impose socialism on us.” Since then, however, Ermey has done an about face.
The Real Cost of DADT Over the past six years, the cost to the military of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was more than $193 million, according to the Government Accountability Office. Most of the money, $185.7 million, went for recruiting and training servicemembers to replace the 3,664 gays expelled. Another $7.7 was for
administrative costs. An example of the cost to military readiness is the fact that 79 percent of soldiers released from the Army held jobs that were critical to military operations. The Navy expelled 760 sailors considered critical because of the language they spoke.
An Omaha, Nebraska, man who was accused of spraying mace into a crowd outside a funeral for a Marine killed in Afghanistan has been fined $300 for assault and battery. Omaha television station KMTV reported on Thursday that a judge ordered George Vogel to pay $100 each on three counts. Vogel pleaded guilty in November. Police say he sprayed mace as he drove past a church on Aug. 28. At least
16 people, including a police officer, were exposed. Police were stationed at the funeral of Staff Sgt. Michael Bock to monitor a protest by the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, whose members believe U.S. troop deaths are God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality. Police say Vogel, a Vietnam veteran, was apparently targeting the Westboro members.

Better Shape Up or You’ll Find Yourself Unemployed During the upcoming military drawdown, military personnel who want to keep serving should stay in shape and out of trouble. Only the best people
will be able to re-enlist. Tight defense budgets and planned force reductions, particularly for the Marine Corp and Army, is the new reality for the military.
Freedom Station Planned in San Diego for Injuried Warriors Opening in San Diego sometime during the next 12 months will be Freedom Station. It is a place for injured service men and women to stay while transitioning to civilian life. A place where they can reconcile their loss and gather strength for the challenges yet to come. Freedom Station will feature cottagestyle apartments with small yards, and
will be equipped with everything from the bed spread to the shower curtain. It is a place to live outside the barracks before separating. Residents can move into the apartments three months before they receive their DD-214s and six months thereafter. For more information, visit their website at www.freedomstation.org.

CAME ACROSS OUR DESK I MP The following was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco, TX, Nov 18, 2010
Put me in charge Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Hos, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job. Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job. Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place. In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.” Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules. Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem. If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices. 1 MILLION IMMIGRANTS TAKE U.S. JOBS By Dr. Jerome Corsi States spend $113 billion a year for social services for illegals In the past two years, as unemployment remained near 10 percent, more than 1 million immigrants, of whom 35 percent were undocumented or illegal, have gotten jobs in the United States. The basic story is that in the past two years, U.S. employers have chosen to go for cheap immigrant help, while the economy as a hole has shed millions of jobs for U.S. workers. At the same time, providing social services is costing cash-strapped states billions of dollars to pay for a wide range of services many states can no longer afford, including welfare payments, health services and education of children, with classes often provided in Spanish. The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that the cost of illegal immigration to the states stands at about $113 billion, with nearly half that amount going to education costs. 1 million immigrants land jobs in U.S. since 2008 That over one million immigrants have found employment in the U.S. since 2008 was the conclusion of a review of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau data conducted exclusively for Reuters by researchers at the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston. “Employers have chosen to use new immigrants over native-born workers and have continued to displace large numbers of blue-collar workers and young adults without college degrees,” concluded Andrew Sum, director of the Center for Labor Market Studies. “One of the advantages of hiring, particularly young, undocumented immigrants, is the fact that employers do not have to pay health benefits or basic payroll taxes,” Sum told Reuters. The study concluded that from 2008 to 2010, approximately 1.1 million new migrants who have entered the United States have obtained jobs, while U.S. household employment declined overall by 6.26 million during that same period of time. The Reuters-commissioned study found immigrants were acquiring employment in traditional low-wage work associated with foreign, undocumented and especially Mexican labor: hotels and food services, retail trade, sanitation, cleaning and construction. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for all Americans without a high-school diploma in the age group under 30 is about 27 percent to 29 percent, at or near Depression areas, while unemployment in sectors such as construction is almost 21 percent. Illegals intensify state-budget crisis Going beyond the cost of food stamps and welfarestyle benefits through the state program CalWORKS to include the costs of public safety and health care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to Los Angeles taxpayers for 2010 was more than $1.6 billion, not including education costs. “The problem is illegal immigration,” Antonovich spokesman Tony Bell told Fox News. “Their parents evidently immigrated here in order to get on social services. We can no longer afford to be HMO to the world.” The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that the illegal immigrants cost California $21.8 billion a year, for all social welfare services, public safety and health costs, as well as education costs. California is estimated to have a $25 billion budget shortfall in 2011. In November, California’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously that illegal aliens can continue attending California colleges at the cheaper in-state tuition rates, a move that threatens to expand California’s already severe budget crisis. Right now, about 25,000 illegals are estimated to receive in-state tuition rates in California. Last week, the California Department of Education released data indicating that for the first time Latinos now make up the majority of California’s public school students, cracking the 50 percent barrier for the first time in state history, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Even though the California Department of Education did not sort out the data to indicate what percentage of the Latinos were illegal immigrants, the report suggests the California Supreme Court decision could be costly to California taxpayers having to subsidize illegal immigrants at colleges and universities in the state. The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to decide if allowing illegal immigrants the lower, in-state tuition rate for college and universities violates federal law.

Letters to Military Press
Richard, Loved your article in the December 15 MP issue, “Arizona & the Immigration Debate.” Thank you for that. Like I said before, I can only dream of publishing that type of editorial content. Well done, Mike Stanton Hello MP, Thanks for printing the article on Al Sharpton - Societal Parasite I am ashamed that the media has anointed this dangerous man as socalled spokesman for Black Americans. Here are a few points I found on the internet : Al Sharpton is the living personification of the adage, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Sharpton goes by the title Reverend, but no one has ever determined where he attended divinity school. He has also called himself Doctor Sharpton, Lawyer Sharpton, Ethnomusicologist Sharpton, President Sharpton, Emperor Sharpton, and Astronaut Sharpton, but Reverend is the only title that stuck. Sharpton underwent oral surgery in 1984 to unhinge his jaw, making his mouth bigger than his face. Despite being proven a liar, a racist and an ignorant fool, Sharpton continues to feed at the civil rights trough, generating outrage where there is none, making mountains out of molehills, and blaming white people for every damned thing. Recently he took to the podium when a group of New York City cops were acquitted of shooting a black man, but since some of the cops were black, Al chose only to blame the white cops. Sharpton has become best friends with Bill O’Reilly. Whenever there’s a racial issue, O’Reilly invites Sharpton on to prove he’s not a racist and Sharpton comes on so he can get airtime and blame white people via satellite. He is also reported to be in talks with a New York ad agency about doing several spots as the Kool Aid Man. Al

is said to be entertaining the offer, since Kool Aid doesn’t offer any drink mixes that are colored white. I really enjoy your magazine. P. Brawley Hi Trevor, I recently finished reading your January 1, 2011 issue of the Military Press. I’m not able to get every copy of the Military Press due to the distance I live from the nearest military base. I get the Press at March ARB when I’m in that area. I again enjoyed this latest issue. I do have one comment on your story, starting on page 30, “American Civil War Marking the 150th Anniversary.” I personally thought it was put together very well. I learned a few things I didn’t know or have read before. My comment is on top of page 31 where you imposed the pistol, the butt of the pistol covers the ending of four sentences. Unlike the rest of the article, the sentences that include pictures, end at the picture and continue below it. It appears the pistol was imposed after the article was written. The pistol looks good at the top of each page, but it would have been nice to be able to read the complete article. Keep up the good work on the Military Press. Larry A. Roberts 4 years USAF 20 years Navy Reserve (RET) Larry, I equally find the topic of ‘The American Civil War’ a fascinating part of our history. Regarding the layout, I shall have stern words with the person that laid that story out . . . ooops, that was me! I shall pay penance by eating nothing but cold gruel for the next 2 weeks. – Trevor

Hi Dr. Seare, The military decided they wanted to measure me today (monday), so we did that and the measurement was just fine; I was well within what I needed. In fact, I measured in at 35 inches around the waist whereas I was 39-41 depending beforehand. For what it's worth; you've made a very big, and cost-effective change in my life, and I wanted to be sure to say thank you for it again. I've got a body now that will keep me more mobile, motivated, and overall healthier than before, which is priceless. Thank you again. Respectfully, Daniel PS. My wife sends her thanks as well.

Operation Blue to Green started in July 2004 and is a prior-service enlistment program developed in response to Air Force and Navy forceshaping programs. “The program allows those who are on active duty with good service records who are facing separation to continue their service by transferring over to the Army,” said Sgt. 1st Class Bruce Stevenson, station commander for Army Recruiting San Diego. “The major benefit for choosing this program is being able to continue serving your country while also keeping all of your benefits,” Stevenson said.

New veterans court sets first court date The Vets A new court called the Veterans Treatment Review Calendar will begin hearing cases in early February. The court will be presided over by Judge Roger W. Krauel, a Vietnam vet with 35 years in service. The program targets Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with a host of issues including PTSD, traumatic

train injury, military sexual trauma or substance abuse issues. San Diego County is home to an estimated 235,000 veterans. The largest numbers of Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans anywhere in the country live in San Diego. It is estimated that there are 30,000 of these vets. Over the past few years, increasing

numbers of these vets have launded in county jail for incidents described as “impulse crimes” such as drunk driving, spouse and child abuse, barroom brawls and resisting arrest. The county now has close to 150 of the young veterans enmeshed in the criminal justice system and another 400 vets of all ages in jail or facing charges.

U.S. vets say Petraeus deserves 5th star U.S. veterans have called for top Afghanistan commander General David Petraeus to receive a rare fifth star, but a lawmaker said Tuesday that Congress has no immediate plans to promote. The extremely rare honor has not been bestowed on any general for decades, and has only been awarded ten times in the country’s history. It is the equivalent of the British field marshal rank.
Previous recipients include General John Pershing at the end of WWI and generals Dwight Eisenhower, George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur and Adm. Chester Nimitz during WWII. “The U.S. war against terrorism is now the longest war in U.S. history, and General Petraeus has clearly distinguished himself as a leader worthy of the rank held by generals MacArthur, Marshall and Nimitz,” Pete Hegseth and
Wade Zirkle, Iraq war veterans who head the Vets for Freedom group, said. “A promotion would properly honor his service — and it would also honor the troops he leads and has led,” they wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week. The two say they hope to gather up to 10,000 signatures and submit the petition to Congress, which would have to approve the promotion. On their Facebook page, 738 people had

Ending the homeless veteran problem, as we know it By Robert Rosebrock
After nearly three years of battling VA bureaucrats, a wealthy homeowner group, and complicit politicians over the abuse and misappropriation of Veterans property, the Veterans Revolution has fundamentally brought an end to the “homeless Veteran” problem, as we know it in Los Angeles County. That’s right! This shameful exploitation of “homeless Veterans” will finally cease because the Old Veterans Guard solved this problem by accurately identifying the problem, and they did it without wasting billions of dollars. In brief, the term “homeless Veteran” in Los Angeles County is a complete
fabrication and a misnomer. That’s because Veterans have always had a legal “Home” that is exclusively protected by an 1887 Act of Congress and the Land Grant Deed of 1888. But how does that “end” the homeless Veteran problem if they are still not allowed to live in their legally deeded National Veterans Home? Unfortunately, there will continue to be thousands of Veterans living alone and hungry in back-alley squalor while struggling to survive on the dangerous streets of Los Angeles. However, the difference is they will no longer be called “homeless Veterans.” Instead, they will hereafter be correctly

and officially referred to as “Exiled Veterans.” Here are the cold, hard facts: In a traitorous act of neglect and defiance, the public servants who were entrusted to protect the National Home as a safe refuge for Veterans to heal from war, have systematically misappropriated and desecrated this sacred property through back room deal-making and cronyism to satisfy special-interest “wants,” which have always come at the painful expense of Veterans’ “needs.” As a result, Veterans who are without proper and promised shelter have been persecuted, ostracized and illegally evicted from their rightful Home
and forced to live in exile as third-class citizens. Know this: The Veterans Revolution will continue to march forward to permanently end one of the most heinous crimes ever perpetrated on American soil. These unforgivable crimes were initiated and executed through our own elected politicians as they displaced more than 20,000 men and women who had selflessly and patriotically defended the United States of America by forcing them out of their rightful Home. The end is near as supporters of the Veterans Revolution demand a full Congressional Investigation into this terrible national disgrace.

COVER ARTIST I MP
JOHN ROBERT DOUGHTY, JR. John R. Doughty, Jr. was born in 1959, and as the son of an Air Force officer, he traveled extensively during the period his father was in the service. While stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in the early 1960s, he was exposed to the world of military aviation, ranging from the YF-12A to the B-58 Hustler. He saw the X-15 fly low over his home on base as it returned to land on the dry lakebed, and witnessed the tragic crash of the XB-70 while playing on the kindergarten playground. John received his first art award for a drawing he did in kindergarten of the Edwards Air Force Base fire station. John attended Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California, where he received an AA degree in Visual
Communications, with an emphasis in Technical Illustrations. In 1982, he received a BA degree in Biblical Studies from Southern California
College (now Vanguard University). In 1983, John married his wife Brenda, and they moved to the San Diego area in 1987, where John began working for Hamilton Sundstrand Aerospace Company as a Technical Illustrator-artist. John is the proud father of two daughters, Kristen and Melissa, and his son, Andrew. Unfortunately, his youngest daughter Melissa passed away at the age of two, after a ten-month-long battle with cancer. John’s artwork for Carley’s Magical Gardens, surrounding the Hematology / Oncology Center at San Diego’s Children’s Hospital, has been the most meaningful in his career. In the early years of John’s art career, his focus was solely on railroad art and building High Iron Illustrations. After attending the 1986 International Railway Art Exhibition in Boston, Massachusetts, he decided to diversify, with the primary focus on aviation-related subjects. He became an Artist Member in the prestigious American Society of Aviation Artists in 1991. In 1994, he was given a VIP flight aboard a VF-11 Red Ripper F-14D Super Tomcat, one of many highlights in his aviation art career. John has

also expanded his horizon to cover various art themes such as wildlife, automotive, and ocean scenes. His specialty is currently centered on his aviation art, with trademark fine-detail. Several corporations and military units have commissioned John for his artwork, and his original paintings are prominently displayed in main lobbies, corporate boardrooms, and squadron headquarters throughout the country
Children’s Hospital
C a r l e y ’s Magical Gardens are three interconnecting courtyard gardens located around the Hematology / Oncology Center at Children’s Hospital and Health Center, San Diego, California. Carley Copley is the heart and soul of Carley’s Magical Gardens, a beautiful little three-
year-old girl who was diagnosed with Leukemia. During her eleven month battle against the disease, Carley spent many days at the hospital in a room she called her “little house.” One day she stepped outside her room to get a drink, when she noticed a spider. With her eyes wide-open in a combination of fear and curiosity, her reaction intrigued her father Mike, and the idea of the ‘Buggy Garden’ was born. Carley passed away in August 1996, but her life continues to touch people every day. Work began in August 1997 to convert three patio areas into the three magical gardens, which are the ‘Buggy Garden,’ the ‘Garden of Dreams,’ and the ‘Friendship Garden.’ Nine artists were involved in the project, along with Sundt Construction Company, Children’s Hospital architect Toni Figerus, and project leads Mike and Liz Copley. The nine artists were Alber De Matteis, Kim Emerson, T.J. Dixon, James Nelson, Rod Treece, Lori Tyloch, Mary Lynn Dominguez, Ellen Phillips, and John Doughty. The Gardens were dedicated on November 12, 1999, and have received many awards, including a 2000 Multiple Orchids Award for architecture and landscaping. Besides being a place for children and families to go to escape from the struggles of cancer treatment, many special events have taken place in the gardens, including birthday parties, baptisms, and a wedding, just to name a few. My involvement as an artist came from a slightly different angle than that of the other artists. My daughter Melissa was diagnosed with spinal cancer three months after her first birthday. No parent wants to hear the word “cancer” mentioned with his or her child’s name. One day while I was in the Observation Unit with Melissa as she received her treatment, I was talking with one of the parent liaisons, Mike Copley, and For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280
mentioned I had seen him on television talking about the garden project. I told him about my art background and my interest in the project, but we knew that Melissa’s care was my main focus in life. After battling cancer for ten months, Melissa passed away in July 1998. A few months after she passed away, I was asked by Mike to join the team working on the gardens. It was truly an honor to work with such talented and caring artists. See more of John’s work at: www.highironillustrations.com www.pilotsandprofiles.blogspot.com

HISTORY I MP
“This was the First Murder” Captain William Dyess was a fighter pilot stationed on Luzon when the Japanese invaded. Captured when the American forces on Bataan surrendered, he joined the Death March and was interned by the Japanese. In April 1943, Captain Dyess was one of three prisoners able to escape from their captors. Captain Dyess eventually made his way back to America where his story was published. We join his story as he encounters his first atrocity of the March: “The victim, an air force captain, was being searched by a three-star private. Standing by was a Jap commissioned officer, hand on sword hilt. These men were nothing like the toothy, bespectacled runts whose photographs are familiar to most newspaper readers. They were cruel of face, stalwart, and tall. “The private a little squirt, was going through the captain’s pockets. All at once he stopped and sucked in his breath with a hissing sound. He had found some Jap yen.”
Lt. Colonel William Dyess, 1943 “He held these out, ducking his head and sucking in his breath to attract notice. The big Jap looked at the money. Without a word he grabbed the captain by the shoulder and shoved him down to his knees. He pulled the sword out of the scabbard and raised it high over his head, holding it with both hands. The private skipped to one side.” “Before we could grasp what was happening, the black-faced giant had swung his sword. I remember how the sun flashed on it. There was a swish and a kind of chopping thud, like a cleaver going through beef.” “The captain’s head seemed to jump off his ‘shoulders. It hit the ground in front of him and went rolling crazily from side to side between the lines of prisoners.” “The body fell forward. I have seen wounds, but never such a gush of. blood as this. The heart continued to pump for a few seconds and at each beat there was another great spurt of blood. The white dust around our feet was turned into crimson mud. I saw the hands were opening and closing spasmodically. Then I looked away.” “When I looked again the big Jap had put up his sword and was strolling off. The runt who had found the yen was putting them into his pocket. He helped himself to the captain’s possessions.” “This was the first murder. . .”
Oriental Sun Treatment Bataan Death March, 1942 The war came to the Philippines the same day it came to Hawaii and in the same manner — a surprise air attack. In the case of the Philippines, however, this initial strike was followed by a full-scale invasion of the main island of Luzon three days later. By early January, the American and Filipino defenders were forced to retreat to a slim defensive position on the island’s western Bataan Peninsula. The American and Filipino forces fought from an untenable position until formally surrendering to the Japanese on April 9. The Japanese immediately began to march some 76,000 prisoners (12,000 Americans, the remainder Filipinos) northward into captivity along a route of death. When three American officers escaped a year later, the world learned of the unspeakable atrocities suffered along the 60-mile journey that became known as the Bataan Death March. Japanese butchery, disease, exposure to the blazing sun, lack of food, and lack of water took the lives of approximately 5,200 Americans along the way. Many prisoners were bayoneted, shot, beheaded or just left to die on the side of the road. “A Japanese soldier took my canteen, gave the water to a horse, and threw the canteen away,” reported one escapee. “The stronger were not permitted to help the weaker. We then would hear shots behind us.” The Japanese forced the prisoners to sit for hours in the hot sun without water. “Many of us went crazy and several died.” The ordeal lasted five days for some and up to twelve days for others. Although the Japanese were unprepared for the large number of prisoners in their care, the root of the brutality lay in the Japanese attitude that a soldier should die before surrender. A warrior’s surrender meant the forfeiture of all rights to treatment as a human being. After the war, the finger of blame pointed to General Masaharu Homma, commander of the Japanese troops in the Philippines. Tried for war crimes, he was convicted and executed by a firing squad on April 3, 1946. Page 14 February 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
As the prisoners were herded north they collided with advancing Japanese troops moving to the south, forcing a brief halt to the march: “Eventually the road became so crowded we were marched into a clearing. Here, for two hours, we had our first taste of the oriental sun treatment, which drains the stamina and weakens the spirit. The Japs seated us on the scorching ground, exposed to the full glare of the sun. Many of the Americans and Filipinos had no covering to protect their heads. I was beside a small bush but it cast no shade because the sun was almost directly above us. Many of the men around me were ill. When I thought I could stand the penetrating heat no longer. I was determined to have a sip of the tepid water in my canteen. I had no more than unscrewed the top when the aluminum flask was snatched from my hands. The Jap who had crept up behind me poured the water into a horse’s nosebag, then threw down the canteen. He walked on among the prisoners, taking away their water and pouring it into the bag. When he had enough he gave it to his horse.”
Drop-outs
The parade of death continues its journey as its members inevitably succumb to the heat, the lack of food and the lack of water: “The hours dragged by and, as we knew they must. The drop-outs began. It seemed that a great many of the prisoners reached the end of their endurance at about the same time. They went down by twos and threes. Usually, they made an effort to rise. I never can forget their groans and strangled breathing as they tried to get up. Some succeeded. Others lay lifelessly where they had fallen. I observed that the Jap guards paid no attention to these. I wondered why. The explanation wasn’t long in coming. There was a sharp crackle of pistol and rifle fire behind us. Skulking along, a hundred yards behind our contingent, came a ‘clean-up squad’ of murdering Jap buzzards. Their helpless victims, sprawled darkly against the white, of the road, were easy targets. As members of the murder squad stooped over each huddled form, there would be an orange ‘flash in the darkness and a sharp report. The bodies were left where they lay, that other prisoners coming behind us might see them. Our Japanese guards enjoyed the spectacle in silence for a time. Eventually, one of them who spoke English felt he should add a little spice to the entertainment. ‘Sleepee?’ he asked. ‘You want sleep? Just lie down on road. You get good long sleep!’ On through the night we were followed by orange flashes and thudding sounds.”
Arrival at San Fernando Finally, after five days without food and limited water, the dwindling column arrives at its destination: “The sun still was high in the sky when we straggled into San Fernando, a city of 36,000 population, and were put in a barbed wire compound similar to the one at Orani. We were seated in rows for a continuation of the sun treatment. Conditions here were the worst yet. The prison pen was jammed with sick, dying, and dead American and Filipino soldiers. They were sprawled amid the filth and maggots that covered the ground. Practically all had dysentery. Malaria and dengue fever appeared to be running unchecked. There were symptoms of other tropical diseases I didn’t even recognize.
For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280
Jap guards had shoved the worst cases beneath the rotted flooring of some dilapidated building. Many of these prisoners already had died. The others looked as though they couldn’t survive until morning. There obviously had been no burials for many hours. After sunset Jap soldiers entered and inspected our rows. Then the gate was opened again and kitchen corpsmen entered with cans of rice. We held our mess kits and again passed lids to those who had none. Our spirits rose. We watched as the Japs ladled out generous helpings to the men nearest the gate. Then, without explanation, the cans were dragged away and the gate was closed. It was a repetition of the ghastly farce at Balanga. The fraud was much more cruel this time because our need. was vastly greater. In our bewildered state it took some time for the truth to sink in. When it did we were too discouraged even to swear.” References: This eyewitness account appears in: Dyess, William E., The Dyess Story (1943); “The Bataan Death March, 1942,” EyeWitness to History, www.eyewitnesstohistory. com (2009).

Time Will Tell On some air bases the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle. One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?” The tower responded, “Who is calling?” The aircraft replied, “What difference does it make?” The tower replied, “It makes a lot of difference. If it is an American Airlines flight, it is 3 o’clock. If it is an Air Force plane, it is 1500 hours. If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells. If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3. If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon.” It was a dark, stormy, night. The Marine was on his first assignment, and it was guard duty. A General stepped out taking his dog for a walk. The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a perfect salute, and yelled out, “Sir, Good Evening, Sir!” The General, out for some relaxation, returned the salute and said “Good evening soldier, nice night, isn’t it?” Well it wasn’t a nice night, but the Private wasn’t going to disagree with
the General, so the he saluted again and replied, “Sir, Yes Sir!” The General continued, “You know there’s something about a stormy night that I find soothing, it’s really relaxing. Don’t you agree?” The Private didn’t agree, but then the private was just a private, and responded, “Sir, Yes Sir!” The General, pointing at the dog, “This is a Golden Retriever, the best type of dog to train.” The Private glanced at the dog, saluted yet again, and said, “Sir, Yes Sir!” The General continued “I got this dog for my wife.” The Private simply said, “Good trade, Sir!”
To Insure or Not to Insure? Airman Jones was assigned to the induction center, where he advised new recruits about their government benefits, especially their GI insurance. It wasn’t long before Captain Smith noticed that Airman Jones was having a staggeringly high success-rate, selling insurance to nearly 100% of the recruits he advised. Rather than ask about this, the Captain stood in the back of the room and listened to Jones’ sales pitch. Jones explained the basics of the GI Insurance to the new recruits, and then said: “If you have GI Insurance and go into battle and are killed, the government has to pay $200,000 to your beneficiaries. If you don’t have GI insurance, and you go into battle and get killed, the government only has to pay a maximum of $6000. Now,” he concluded, “which group do you think they are going to send into battle first?”

A Different Perspective
The reason the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines bicker amongst themselves is that they don’t speak the
same language. For instance, Take the simple phrase, “Secure the building.” The Army will post guards around the place. The Navy will turn out the lights and lock the doors. The Marines will kill everybody inside and set up a headquarters. The Air Force will take out a five-year lease with an option to buy. • Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm • Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines • Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese • I’m not cheap, but I am on special this week • I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met • I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol • I intend to live forever-so far, so good • Many people quit looking for work when they find a job • When I’m not in my right mind, my left mind gets pretty crowded • Everyone has a photographic memory. Some don’t have film. • Boycott shampoo! Demand the REAL poo! • If you choke a smurf, what color does it turn? • Who is General Failure and why is he reading my hard disk? • What happens if you get scared half to death twice? • Energizer Bunny arrested, charged with battery • I poured Spot remover on my dog. The Personal Archives of the Greatest Star Who Ever Lived – Marilyn Monroe “Now, on Castro. You see, I was brought up to believe in democracy, and then when the Cubans finally threw out Battista with so much bloodshed, the United States doesn’t stand behind them or give them help or support even to develop democracy! I can understand John Daly on an American national broadcast making fun of Castro for having appeared at one of his country’s national functions in a tuxedo. But the New York Times’ responsibility to keep its readers informed — means in an unbiased way. I don’t know, somehow I have always counted on the Times, and not entirely because you’re there.”
T
hat is a part of a long letter to the New York Times’ Sunday editor Lester Markel, dated March 29, 1960. The writer? Miss Marilyn Monroe. (Actually, I personally think the Times went all out to support Castro’s ascension via their reporter T.S. Matthews, who is credited by conservatives as having “accomplished” Castro’s rise to power. The Right has always blamed The Times.) But “never mind” if Marilyn had it wrong — she was probably swept up by the
romanticism of a revolutionary who said he was “for the people” — she proves that she cared about what was happening in the world. This letter (in which Monroe also ruminates on campaign slogans for the coming presidential race) appears in a new (yet another!) book on Marilyn, the star who simply cannot die. This one is titled “MM-Personal: From the Private Archives of Marilyn Monroe,” written by Lois Banner, photographs by

Mark Anderson. Unlike last year’s “Fragments,” which consisted solely of Marilyn’s notes, poems, jottings, recipes, etc., “MMPersonal,” while it also has letters from the star, is mainly correspondence to Monroe from friends and professional colleagues — including harried notes and telegrams from publicists frantic

to put a stop to the unhappy publicity surrounding Marilyn’s behavior on the set of “Some Like It Hot.” These strategic plans are overshadowed by Monroe’s miscarriage, which is mentioned. (There is even talk of suing Time magazine.) Among the affectionate missives is this telegram from the great Broadway and movie choreographer Jack Cole: “The universe sparkles with miracles but none among them shines like you. Remember that when you go to sleep.” The book, a luscious glossy thing, is studded with photos, many of them Monroe’s personal items — including artwork she purchased just before her death. There’s a great deal of minutiae that only the most devoted Monroe fan will appreciate — check stubs and such. But the overall vibe of the book is wrenching, because it clarifies Monroe’s humanity, her working life, her normal day-to-day existence. She didn’t lurch around every single moment in a druginduced coma. She had a vital — if troubled — existence. She wrote to her stepchildren by Arthur Miller (in the voice of the family dog, Hugo) and she wrote to Isadore Miller, even after she had divorced his son, Arthur. This note to Miller, dated Feb. 12, 1962, contains a significant paragraph: “Last night I attended a dinner in honor of the attorney general, Robert Kennedy. He seems rather mature and brilliant for

his 36 years, but what I liked best about him, besides his Civil Rights program, is he’s got such a wonderful sense of humor.” However it ended up, that controversial relationship began as most of Marilyn’s relationships with men began — with an appreciation of the mind, and a fine regard for laughter. Six months after writing this, Monroe was dead. But, not really. Others were more beautiful, more talented, had far more illustrious careers. than the usual “sex symbol.” Certainly her struggles to raise herself up in the world were there for all to see. Death enshrined her and books continue to analyze and reveal the woman who, according to Pat Newcomb, her last press rep: “never told everything to anyone.” Monroe herself said, weeks before her death, “Fame will go by, and so what? I’ve had you, fame. It’s something I’ve experienced but that’s not where I live.” She couldn’t know that Fame is exactly where she’d live, forever.

COMMENTARY & STORIES THAT CAME ACROSS OUR DESK I MP
Whether you love him or hate him, Limbaugh nailed this one By Rush Limbaugh
I think the vast differences in compensation between victims of the September 11 casualty and those who die serving our country in uniform are profound. No one is really talking about it either, because you just don’t criticize anything having to do with September 11. Well, I can’t let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September 11 attack, you’re going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million. If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable. Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there’s a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt. Keep in mind that some of the people who are getting an average of $1.185 million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it’s not enough. Their deaths were tragic, but for most, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Soldiers put themselves in harm’s way FOR ALL OF US, and they and their families know the dangers. (Actually, soldiers are put in harms way by politicians and commanding officers.) We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11 families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation as well. You see where this is going, don’t you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over 50 years of entitlement politics in this country. It’s just really sad. Every time a pay raise comes up for the military, they usually receive next to The opinions, beliefs and viewpoints expressed by nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive the various authors and forum participants in this on food stamps and live in low-rent housing. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7, they may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed them in harm’s way receives a pension of email: trevor@militarypress.com $15,000 per month. I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now fighting. “When do we finally do something about this?”

NAVY SEALS TURNED MMA GYM OWNERS While there are no shortage of opportunities in the private sector for retired Navy SEALS, two of America’s finest decided to forego those opportunities and open an MMA gym instead. Longtime fans of the sport, and no strangers to combat, these guys had a dream to create a place that teaches people to become great fighters, while also appealing to the average Joe, or Jane as the case may be. Hence, Victory MMA and Fitness, an incredible 21,000 square foot fitness and training center came to be in San Diego. While serving their country for 20 years, Sarge and Jocko developed this passion for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and cage fighting. As far back as 1999 at the famous Lion’s Den gym, these guys had been perfecting their skills in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the unique and exciting sport of cage fighting. With their background of training the most elite fighting force known to man, it’s no surprise these highly decorated SEALS, one a commander and the other a master sergeant who after two tours in Iraq and leading troops in that incursion into Fallujah, are now training MMA fighters to become champions. Since motivation and training are critical components of success on the battle field and in the cage, a natural synergy developed. In addition, they are critical components of life as well. That’s why so many people benefit from training in MMA. Whether they be beginners or the advanced, there’s always a strong sense of commitment and achievement when being trained by specialists in the field. Participants not only get an incredible workout, they learn real skills, make good friends, build self esteem, and become empowered in their daily lives.
These is also a strong social component. Remember how your parents always warned you about hanging out with the wrong people? “Birds of a feather,” and all that? Well it turns out your parents were right. Your circle of friends do make a significant difference in your life. One of the key benefits of a Military career is the friendships and camaraderie of the brothers and sisters you serve with. Here too is a strong similarity with MMA. Training in group formats bring people together, and so does their common interests. Members of MMA clubs develop an enhanced familiarity with fellow members, with friendships often flowing over into the social realm. Unlike old school boring health clubs, the new training ground is the real deal, and truly prepares people for the challenges ahead. So whether you are the average Joe or Jane, or you want to be an MMA fighter, there are clubs like Victory MMA and Fitness where guys like Sarge and Jocko teach people from all walks of life to be their best, and if need be, to kick some ass. If you want a better and more exciting workout, to learn real skills, and meet great people with similar “Girls do it, too! interests, places like Victory MMA and Fitness are Tiffany Morgan for you. Eye Witness Account
Following The St. Valentine’s Massacre, people curious to see the carnage arrive at the scene.
The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was a mass execution orchestrated by Al Capone on the key men of a rival gang from Chicago. The warfare between Al Capone (Scarface) and George Moran (Bugs) was ongoing and well known to the Chicago police but when the authorities arrived at the crime scene of what would be forever known as the Valentine’s Day Massacre, they were a bit puzzled. Seven dead bodies discovered inside the S.M.C Cartage Co. garage located at 2122 North Clark Street belonged to the mobsters from the Bugs Moran gang but they all seemed to have been shot with machine guns from the back while being lined up against the wall. These were mobsters who were not only well-armed with endless supply of latest firepower, but also henchmen well used to killing other people. So why would they all stand up facing the wall so their enemies could execute them from behind without any form of resistance?
Two women (Jeanette Landesman and Alphonse Morin) living across the street from the garage where the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place talked to the police about what they saw happened on February 14, 1929. They said they heard a slew of bullets fired by machine guns and looked outside their window which directly faced the garage to see two policemen walk out of the garage escorting two casually dressed men who held their hands above their heads as if they were under arrest. Having been previously spooked by the gunfire, the women felt comforted by the sight of the police leading out the gangsters, however upon talking to the authorities, they learned that none of the police had any activity at that address prior to the massacre so it could not have been any of their men who were seen by the eyewitness.
Al Capone There was no doubt that the Valentine’s Day Massacre was orchestrated by Al Capone. Needless to say, he secured himself with an alibi by being in Florida where he had the talks with another investigator lined up on the day the massacre took place, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out that it was him who made top orders. The objective was to kill Bugs Moran
Page 26 February 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
and the killers believed they got him, because he was supposed to be at the location, but as he was arriving, Bugs noticed fake police cars and decided to pull back and figure out what was going on. Al Capone’s reign over Chicago was spreading. Thanks to prohibition, he was able to accumulate the riches exceeding $60 million by running gambling, prostitution and bootlegging operations. But as his riches grew, so did his greed and the desire to get rid of the rival Chicago gangs.
Day Massacre When the bodies of seven Moran gangsters were discovered, the crime scene was a bloodbath. It appeared that no one could have survived such attack but miraculously, despite being shot several times (had 14 slugs in his body), the body of Frank Gusenberg was still moving. He was choking on his own blood, but was still alive. Sgt. Thomas J. Loftus, one of the leading investigators went to talk to
Dr. Frank Gusenberg to find out what happened, but the doctor refused to talk. Frank Gusenberg knew who Sgt. Loftus was, but when asked about the massacre, he responded with a firm, “I won’t talk.” Frank Gusenberg was taken to the Alexian Brothers Hospital where he died three hours later. He didn’t tell Sgt. Loftus anything, but with his last words, he confirmed that it was the men in police uniforms who lined them against the wall and opened fire.
killed without a fight. Once all seven men were facing the bricks, two other men in plain clothes entered the garage and shot them all down. Afterwards, so as not to cause too much panic among the people living in the neighborhood, the policemen walked out looking as if they had just arrested two men. Believing that everything was under control, despite rapid gunfire that could have been heard just seconds before, none of the neighbors ran to the telephone to call the police, allowing the gangsters to safely depart.
Mystery
George ‘Bugs’ Moran
Facts The police had to start pasting bits and pieces of information and evidence they had to come to a full story which went something like this: Two men dressed in police uniforms entered the garage where five Moran mobsters, one auto mechanic and an optometrist who enjoyed killing in his spare time by hanging out with the gangsters, were present at the time. The Moran people thought it was a regular police sting so they decided to cooperate with the authorities and allowed them to have themselves disarmed and lined against the wall. They would not otherwise allow to have themselves
Al Capone has never confessed to being the man behind the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. He was never arrested for this or any other gang-related crime and had never made a heart breaking tell-all confession prior to his passing. Instead, he was arrested on tax evasion charges a few years later and spent seven years in jail before being released to retire in Florida where he died from syphilis in 1947. To keep the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre mystery even more interesting, none of the gunmen were identified either. The only thing we know is the confession from Al Capone’s fellow “associate” who confirmed that Scarface told him about his intentions to take down George Moran. The associate told Al Capone that in order to get to Bugs Moran, he would have to kill many people to which Al Capone allegedly replied by saying, “I’ll send flowers.” Later investigation into the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre revealed that the deed was planned out by Jack McGurn, member of the Circus Gang (Al Capone’s satellite gang) who allegedly brought in killers for hire from St. Louis to carry out the massacre. It is believed that as many as 14 people may have been involved in the process.

Alphonse “Al” Capone Birth: Jan. 17, 1899 Death: Jan. 25, 1947 Organized crime figure, Chicago Gangster. Probably the best known of the 1920s gangsters, he controlled Chicago until brought down by FBI Agent Elliott Ness. Ness later wrote a book “The Untouchables,” which detailed his efforts to jail Capone. Capone was the largest of the racketeers, and captured the American public’s imagination as few ever did. Born Alphonse Capone in Brooklyn, New York, of Italian immigrant parents, Gabriele and Teresina Capone, he was the fourth of nine children. Raised in a loving middle class Italian family, he was brought up to be honest and hard working. Surprisingly unbiased for his time, he would become friendly with anyone of any race, creed or color who was loyal to him. He quit school at 8th grade, and began work for Johnny Torrio, a new breed of gangster then taking over New York. From him, Al Capone learned his trade, initially running errands and working his way up the ladder to manager. He also learned from a rough local gangster, Frank Yale, about the use of violence to build an empire, while maintaining a respectable home and social life. He married an Irish Catholic, Mae Coughlin, and they had a son, Albert Francis Capone, born December 4, 1918. Baby Albert was born with congenital syphilis, which Al later admitted he had contracted many years before, but had thought the disease had gone away when it went into remission. His syphilis was never treated properly. When Johnny Torrio moved his operations to Chicago in 1921, he brought Capone with him, and together, they built up the crime empire, concentrating on nightclubs, prostitution, and illegal liquor. His first murder occurred in 1924, for which he was found innocent when the eyewitnesses were bribed. In March 1925, Torrio quit the business to retire to Florida, and gave his entire empire to Capone. Killing other gang members to build his empire, Al Capone’s violence peaked with the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, 1929 when seven members of Bugs Moran’s gang were murdered. This murder brought the attention of the Federal government, who swore to get Capone off the street and into jail. In 1931, he was indicted and convicted of Income Tax evasion and sentenced to eleven years in jail. He died in his home in Miami, Florida, of cardiac arrest resulting from third stage syphilis. He was originally buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson) Cause of death: Syphillis Burial: Mount Carmel Cemetery Hillside, Cook County. In my medical practice, I receive a lot of inquiries this time of year for a variety of figure-enhancing procedures. One of the most popular procedures is liposuction. Liposuction as a way of refining the body’s silhouette that uses specialized suction equipment to remove small areas of fat from the hips, buttocks, neck, thighs, calves, ankles, cheeks, chin or just about any other area of the body. The recovery time is generally within three to six weeks depending on the area treated and patients’ individual healing process. After targeted areas of fat have been removed, patients notice that their body features appear to be more in proportion, and lumps and bumps give way to smooth contours improving the fit of swimwear. Although it should not be regarded as a method of weight reduction, it is a contouring procedure that can improve hard to lose areas such as the waste line or hips. Patients will experience smoother clothing lines, but may not have a reduction in clothing or swimsuit size. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, patients are generally able to return to work between two days and two weeks. For optimum results, a compression garment, which can easily be removed by the patient, is worn for two to four weeks. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising will generally subside within a week or two at which time normal activity can be resumed depending on the procedure. The initial results of liposuction should continue as long as one controls weight and maintains a healthy lifestyle. 2011 Audi A8
Dragon King Valkyrie
If Batman ever needed a newly redesigned Batcycle, we’re all for telling him to give the guys of Whitehouse of Japan a call. Taking a stock Honda Valkyrie, Whitehouse of Japan mustered and used all its creative juices to turn the once popular bike into the Dragon King. Weighing in at 652 lbs, the Dragon King Valkyrie
Audi’s full-size luxury sedan will be entering the 2011 model year with an overhaul fit to be called the vehicle’s third generation. This new model made its world debut in Miami at the Audi Pavilion in Miami Beach in 2009 with sales beginning in late 2010. The 2011 Audi A8 is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, but maintains its Audi Space Frame aluminum construction as the previous generation. A new engine will be introduced for this generation as the 6.3 liter W12 engine finds a home in the A8. As far as knick-knacks are concerned, the sedan will feature all light-emitting diode (LED) headlights, an enhanced Multi Media Interface with touchscreen, and an optional 1400 watt Bang & Olufsen sound system. The 2011 Audi A8 starts off at about $78,000, but can peak at about $128,000 with all of the available options.
comes with a completely redesigned look that combines styling tweaks on the front fairing with a new custom paint that makes it look even more formidable than it already is. Whitehouse of Japan readjusted the bike’s seat to 28.75 inches and retooled the bike’s performance specs by inputing a single camshaft flat six-cylinder engine that’s
capable of producing a 100 horsepower and 132 Nm of torque. It’s not going to be setting any speed records considering is bulky weight, but bikes like this are as enjoyed more for their power and imposing looks as they are for their breakneck speeds.
2011 Kawasaki Ninja 650R
The Kawasaki Ninja 650R is entering the 2011 model year with no major updates, just some minor tricks and some new exterior colors. It is powered by a compact 8-valve 649cc parallel-twin engine, which permits the use of a narrow, lightweight frame. The fuel injection and ignition settings are tuned to boost the liquid-cooled engine’s bottom-end torque, to smooth the low-to-mid rpm response and allow the engine to rev quicker. The engine meets stringent emissions regulations thanks to its precise fuel injection and a three-way catalyst system with a 300-cell catalyzer. The 2011 Ninja 650R is defined by sporty styling. It gets integrated turn signals and a sharp tail cowl, MotoGP-inspired multi-function instrumentation and controls. Thanks to them, the rider will notice the slimness of the chassis, low seat height and minimal effort controls first before recognizing the true aim of Kawasaki’s design efforts – the rider.

Paintball helps aid in military combat training I
n the new age of combat training it is ever more crucial to prepare our soldiers before deployment. The battlefield has changed, and so must the tools of life-saving combat training.
Real Action Paintball’s RAP4 METS (Military Enhanced Training System) is the latest training tool available. It is designed to replicate the look, feel, and action of the real M4, and provide interactive, instant, tactile feedback during crucial training. The RAP4 METS features shell ejection after every shot, magazine-fed marking rounds, and has the power source discretely housed inside the butt stock. The training rounds for the RAP4 METS are shot at 450 feet per second, keeping point-of-impact on target over great distances. These units are ideal training tools to teach soldiers what they did wrong and how to do better with greater safety and more training options than live-fire. Mock opposing forces can shoot back, safely but impressively, in live-action exercises. When they hit, it provides a psychological impact and imprint in the mind of the soldier what he/she did wrong. Through the breakthrough training these tools enable, the soldiers learn more effectively how to take proper cover and coordinate movement.

Ben Roethlisberger
Well, Super Bowl XLV officially commences on Sunday, Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, when Ben Roethlisberger and the AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers take on Aaron Rodgers and the NFC Champion Green Bay Packers in a matchup of historic NFL franchises. The Packers became just the second sixth seed to reach the Super Bowl when they defeated their long-time archrivals the Chicago Bears 21-14 behind Rodgers' stellar performance. Their opponents, the Steelers, were the first to do this, back in 2006, defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 behind MVP Hines Ward's magnificent performance. Meanwhile, the Steelers held off the New York Jets 24-19, thanks in large part to running back Rashard Mendenhall's performance and Roethlisberger's fantastic game. They say defense wins championships, and these are the two best defensive teams in the NFL. The Steelers allowed the fewest points this season, the Packers the second-fewest. They were both top5 in fewest yards allowed, as well as sacks, interceptions, and opponents'

SPORTS NEWS I MP passer rating. The game is full of defensive stars, from Harrison and Woodley and Polamalu to Clay Matthews III and Charles Woodson and Raji. And yet, the focus in coming days is likely to focus on quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Ben Roethlisberger. Rodgers, arguably the best QB in the league, has fully emerged from the shadow of Brett Favre. It continues to amaze me that Favre, who should have retired a legend in Green Bay, a figure beloved for years to come, managed to make himself such a hated figure in the city that once adored him. Rodgers, throughout the ongoing drama, consistently handled himself with professionalism and restraint. Roethlisberger, suspended at the beginning of the season following a sexual assault accusation, returned a more humble player and led the Steelers to their third Super Bowl in six seasons. Both have played well this postseason, though each struggled on Sunday, throwing 2 interceptions apiece. Both are mobile quarterbacks who are hard to bring down, throw well on the run, and willing to tuck the ball and slide head first. Rodgers is the better player, but Big Ben has the postseason pedigree, and I'm sure Steeler fans wouldn't trade him for anyone. In this game, I'm not sure I blame them.

BACK TO THE FUTURE
Immediately following their 33-28 victory over the Denver Broncos in the final game of the season, the Chargers sent out a ‘Media Advisory’ highlighting ‘Key Notes from the 2010 Season.’ Amongst some of the ‘Key Notes’ listed were some of the following facts:
• The Chargers 9-7 record marked the teams’ sixth winning season in seven years; • The 41 regular season wins in Norv Turner’s tenure are the second most in team history in a four-year span, tying the mark set in 1978-81 under Don Coryell; • The Chargers are the first team in history to average more than 25 points per game in seven straight seasons (2004-2010); • The Chargers’ improved running
game averaged 113.1 yards per game, surpassing last year’s average of 88.9 yards per game. The team also averaged 4.0 yards per attempt compared to 3.3 yards in 2009; • The Chargers also averaged more total yards and passing yards per game; • The Chargers are the only team in the NFL with a quarterback with 30+ touchdown passes (Rivers), a player with 10 rushing touchdowns (Tolbert) and a player with 10 receiving touchdowns (Gates).

• At first glance, the list above is very impressive as were some other facts that are listed in the endzone section at the end of this story. • However, there are four important facts to take away from this past season No. 1: The Chargers lackluster performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was bad enough the team came out ‘flat’ against the Rams on the road and the Raiders at home resulting in two of their seven losses. But to travel to Cincinnati and play that bad
knowing they still had a chance to win the division is not only embarrassing, it’s inexcusable. No. 2: Although their 9-7 record might have marked their sixth winning season in seven years, it was not good enough to qualify for the post-season. A win over the Bengals would have, in all likelihood, set up a much-anticipated rematch with the NY Jets at Qualcomm Stadium rather than sitting at home watching the playoffs wondering what if? No. 3: In a division they have dominated four out of the last five years, the Chargers finished 3-3 in the AFC West. And despite falling just one game short of the division title, there is no question that both Kansas City and Oakland have improved dramatically and with John Fox taking over the helm in Denver, the Broncos will be much tougher in the future as well. No. 4: Impressive as the notes in the media advisory are, it is clear from watching the playoffs that the Chargers must sign a couple of high-impact, difference-making players on the defensive side of the ball if they have any hopes of not only winning back the division title, but advance in the playoffs as well. With the Chargers now finished filling the holes on their coaching staff, they must now focus on their players. Last offseason the Chargers lost seven Pro Bowl players from which they never recovered. There are some key names amongst the 21 players who could very well become unrestricted free agents if no new Collective Bargaining Agreement can be reached before March 3 – the end of the league year. On offense the big question is what GM AJ Smith will do about Vincent Jackson? Will he be signed to a longterm, high-dollar deal? Do they slap the Franchise tag on him and take the risk that a disgruntled Jackson will still perform at an All-Pro level under a one-year contract or does Smith make a sign-and-trade deal prior to the upcoming NFL Draft at the end of April to acquire more picks? On defense, there are a number of players – both starters and valuable backups – who remain unsigned as well. Antwan Barnes, Kevin Burnett, Jacques Cesaire, Stephen Cooper, Paul Oliver, Brandon Siler and Eric Weddle are the key names Smith has to make tough decisions on. The question is who do you keep? Smith’s reputation as a top-notch GM in the NFL has taken a major hit over the past couple of years for not only his draft choices and lack of activity in the free agent market, but his hard-nosed negotiations while dealing with his own Pro Bowl players. With all the speculation the franchise is moving to Los Angeles after the 2011 season and season ticket sales dwindling down, Smith needs to rekindle some of the magic he showed a few years back in 2002-2006 when every move he made seemed to turn to gold. The Endzone: Having finished the season ranked No. 1 against the pass and No. 4 against the run, new defensive coordinator Greg Manusky inherits one of the better defensive units in the league. Being familiar with personnel and the 3-4 scheme having coached the linebackers here from 2002-2006, Back in 2004 and 2006 Smith signed the likes of Randall Godfrey, Steve Foley and Marlon McCree who brought an attitude, experience and a toughness that played a major role in that 14-2 season in ‘06. Let’s just hope that history will repeat itself and Smith can get on another lucky streak landing some hard-nosed football players on both sides of the ball.

Disabled Veteran Says: It’s Simple, We Volunteered for You By Cheri Petso – disaboom.com
John Jones straps his feet into his snowboard, clicking the plastic bindings tightly in place. He’s sitting, feet outstretched and locked into his Burton board. He places the board flat on the ground and propels his upper body up and over the board until it rests behind him while his knees support his body. “This is how I have to get up on the mountain,” he says, demonstrating the final push from his knees to a standing position. “I don’t have the ankle balance to get up the other way,” he explains. Amputee Snowboarder It’s anything but obvious when watching John carve down a mountain that he’s one of the few amputees who attempt snowboarding—a sport reliant on balance and a combination of knee, ankle, and foot articulation. John, a double, below-the-knee amputee, was determined to conquer the mountain on a board and he makes it look effortless. Although he enjoys catching air in his monoski, he craves the challenges presented by snowboarding. Choosing to Amputate While serving as a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps, John was sent to Iraq. Twice. “The second time was the charm,” John recalls. While in a Humvee with his fellow soldiers, John was hit by a doublestack anti-tank line, a mine designed to destroy tanks. Once hit, John flew 25 feet into the air and landed behind the Humvee. The mine took his right leg off below the knee and most of his left leg below the knee. The doctors spent 10 months attempting to save the left leg, but finally, due to excessive pain, John elected to amputate the left leg. “I said ‘amputate and we’ll go from there.’” Wounded Warrior Project Meanwhile, John was visited by representatives from the Wounded Warrior Project. They came to see him in the hospital, giving him a backpack full of information on how to participate in dozens of programs—hunting, water skiing, rock climbing, fishing—all adapted for any ability. “It’s a brotherhood,” John says of the Wounded Warriors. From rehab he went on to participate in the Endeavor games, playing wheelchair basketball and fencing. While John was happy to participate, he was looking for something different, and that came with the advent of his introduction to Kirk Bauer. Two months following John’s second amputation, Kirk, the Executive Director of Disabled Sports USA and a partner in the Wounded Warrior project, called John and told him, “You’re going skiing with us.” John balked at the idea, “Kirk, I can’t even stand up yet, I don’t have my legs underneath me.” Kirk dismisses this, “It doesn’t matter; you can sit down and ski.” John decided, “Now this is something different.” Adaptive Skiing Begins John’s exceptional sense of balance made him a natural on the monoski. He was assigned an instructor for the week;
however, she became unnecessary after the first day. John was in the terrain park the first day, catching air off jumps. And he only got better from there. He tried his hand at racing, but wanted to snowboard. “I can do basic runs on the board, but I still go back to my bucket (monoski) to go fast and get air.” A week of skiing, provided by DSUSA and the Wounded Warriors, gave John a much-needed boost. In appreciation of the new perspective he felt after skiing, he began speaking at fundraising events. In fact, he helped raise $750,000 at an event in New York. “People realize what a great program Wounded Warriors is. They pay for everything. It was a good call for me to come out and help. They’ve given me so much, I want to give back to them.” Teaching Disabled Veterans Gun Safety When John isn’t catching air on the mountain, he lives with his wife and two kids in San Antonio, Texas. He’s a firearms weapons instructor at Brook Army Medical Center at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI). He teaches veterans with disabilities to shoot safely with their new prosthetic. He retrains them to shoot for returning to duty and to qualify with their weapon. John doesn’t want to go back to the military because he knows he’d be assigned a desk job. He’s adamant that that wouldn’t be for him. He quips, “I’d want to be on the front lines.” We Volunteered for You What John wants people to understand is simple: “We volunteered our service. Guys volunteer, they go over to Iraq, and they get hurt. It’s important for Americans to realize that we volunteer to give them freedom. Most people just don’t know how to say ‘thank you.’ They usually come up and shake my hand.” John shared a time when someone offered appreciation in a very different way. A woman in the grocery store, seeing John’s legs, asked if he was hurt in the service. When John replied in the affirmative, she grabbed his grocery cart and pushed it to the cash register, handed her credit card to the cashier, and said, “Your groceries are on me.” John was blown away by her kindness. “It was great.” John credits this appreciation and treatment of veterans to changing times. “The Vietnam vets have been a really big push for us so we didn’t get treated like they did. And we’re the next generation that will lobby at the White House for the veterans who come after us.” No doubt. John Jones is equal parts character, commitment and determination. He might be injured but there’s no end to the momentum he displays both on and off the slopes.
