Loose lips sink Generals - and Wars By Cal Thomas

The World War II slogan “Loose Lips Sink Ships,” which was intended to encourage Americans to keep quiet about any information pertaining to that war, could also apply to modern generals and their staffs. Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s mistake was not indulging in -- and allowing his aides to indulge in -- locker room guy talk; his “mistake in judgment” was allowing a writer for the far-left, anti-war magazine, “Rolling Stone” apparently unrestricted and prolonged access to him and his aides. A liberal White House won’t allow access by conservative writers to its deliberations and application of its Saul Alinsky-like redistribution of wealth philosophy. Rich Galen was a press secretary to former vice president Dan Quayle when he was a congressman and senator and to Newt Gingrich when he was House Republican Whip. In 1996, Galen then became the communications director of the political office of Speaker Gingrich. On his “Mullings” blog, he writes of his “excellent association with reporters” because he says he adhered to three rules: 1) I have never sold out my boss to curry favor with the press; 2) I have never lied to the press to protect my boss; 3) If I don’t know an answer, I say so. I don’t pretend to be on the ‘inside’ of every discussion ever held in Washington.” Gen. McChrystal obviously disregarded rule one. Galen thinks McChrystal deserved to be fired, even though only one rather innocuous quote was attributed to him in the Rolling Stone article. The rest are more serious comments by unnamed aides. The bigger question is: who set up this interview and what was that person’s motive? When will that person be fired? McChrystal’s predicament is partially about the chain of command and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which spells out insubordination as a firing offense. Mostly, though, it is about whether this war is winnable and the consequences for the United States and Afghanistan if it is not. America’s failure to win the Vietnam War did not bring the consequences many had predicted, except to the Vietnamese. Today, capitalism seems

to be growing in Vietnam, though other freedoms remain restricted. Losing in Afghanistan, however, would have severe costs for America. The planning center for September 11, 2001 would be reinvigorated. Recruiting for more homicide bombers would be easier. The radical Muslim world would be convinced that “Allah” truly is on their side against “The Great Satan.” Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would see defeat as proof that his god wants him to proceed with his announced plans to usher in “Armageddon” by possibly launching a nuclear attack against Israel. Are any of those plausible actions worth the risk of losing the war in Afghanistan? It isn’t that McChrystal was the indispensible man. Replacing him with United States Central Command leader Gen. David Petraeus was the president’s best option after deciding to relieve McChrystal. But President Obama did select McChrystal to lead the effort to defeat the Taliban and so any “errors in judgment” should not be limited to Gen. McChrystal. If the president picked the “wrong man,” what does that say about his judgment? All of these -- and other -- questions will be forgotten if the U.S. prevails in Afghanistan by establishing a sustainable democratic government that is relatively free of corruption (a herculean task) and can be converted from an opium-based economy to one that can take advantage of its enormous mineral resources. To win in Afghanistan, and make such things possible, our “rules of engagement” must change. American casualties have increased because of self-imposed restraints when encountering Taliban who hide behind civilians. You can’t win a war by hesitating when the enemy is at a disadvantage. To paraphrase a familiar admonition: grab them by their throats and their hearts and minds will follow. McChrystal seemed to be making progress in the shooting war. He failed by shooting off his mouth. But if everyone who has ever said a disparaging word about his or her boss were fired, no one would have a job.

Working retirees win access to Tricare supplement option Civilian employers of military retirees once again can offer a TRICARE supplemental plan with their cafeteriastyle health insurance options so that workers who elect to use their TRICARE Standard benefit can buy coverage conveniently and with pre-taxed dollars. The change took effect June 18 under a final rule published by the Department of Defense that implements a 2007 law prohibiting employers from enticing retirees to use TRICARE instead of employer-paid insurance. The final rule relaxes an interim regulation unveiled two years. Employers still are prohibited under section 707 of the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act (Public Law 109-364) from offering incentives to military retirees to leave employer-paid plans and use TRICARE instead. For example, they can’t subsidize a TRICARE supplement. They also are

barred from offering cash incentives exclusively to military retirees if these workers will elect to opt out of employerpaid health plans. But advocates for working-age military retirees, backed by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), had complained that the interim rule published in March 2008 created unnecessary hassles for military retirees in second careers and denied them of a valuable tax break. Defense officials agreed. Under the final rule, which employers can find in the April 9 Federal Register, DoD exercises an exception allow under the law. Employers once again can make available in their cafeteria-style health plans a TRICARE insurance supplement as long as retiree participants cover the full cost. Jeff Halseth with Government Contractors Insurance Services (GCIS), an insurance brokerage that sells benefit plans to government contractors, said the revised rule will help working-age military retirees.

In effect, they were shifting their own health care costs onto federal taxpayers, Defense officials complained. On reviewing comments received on the interim rule, Defense officials agreed it was only reasonable to permit employers to offer TRICARE supplements if the plans are not paid for, even partially, by employers. “The employer’s only involvement is providing the administrative support for the benefits under the cafeteria plan,” said officials in an analysis that accompanied the final regulation. Convenience can be restored to buying supplemental coverage and premiums can qualify for the tax break. Officials, meanwhile, have lowered their estimate of cost savings to TRICARE from cracking down on employer-paid incentives. The Congressional Budget Office estimated $119 million in savings per year on the belief that 50,000 retirees and dependents would stop using TRICARE. The revised estimate is only $64 million. Halseth suggested the trend will continue. Even if TRICARE were to double annual fees and co-pays paid by military retirees, he said, the number of working retirees relying on TRICARE

levels set in 1995, more working retirees have come to rely on health coverage earned while in service. Several retirees working in the civilian sector, in commenting on the interim rule for employer-paid plans, complained that their employers misunderstood the law. Some employers, for example, thought they had to exclude TRICAREeligible employees from accepting the company’s cash incentive for any employee who opts out of the employerpaid plan. “We hope this final rule will eliminate these misunderstandings,” officials said. Some retirees said they are upset that Congress acted to lessen the value of the TRICARE benefit by banning employer-paid incentives. The cash incentives had the effect of eliminating all their out of pocket health costs. These arrangements did save money both for retirees and their employers but “by shifting costs to the former employer, the United States Government and the federal taxpayers,” Defense officials responded. Re: Immigration - 2 sides on the story that appeared in your May 15 Issue Dear MP, How about the third side to this story. It seems to me that what Cal Thomas and Leonard Pitts had to share in the May 15, 2010 issue of The Military Press has pretty much been said over and over again. For the third side: When will someone run an article from the viewpoint of those who have applied, or are currently applying, for United States citizenship? What is the process are they following? What are their experiences? How much time does the process take? Who do they come in contact with in our bureaucracy? How are they treated? How to they feel about their countrymen/women who are entering the Unites States illegally? And the list goes on; will it ever be explored? I’ll bet there are a lot of interesting and compelling stories from this apparently untapped source. Looking forward to a follow up article. Bill White Mission Valley Dear MP, I think we all lose tract of the fact that illegal or undocumented aliens are breaking the law. Most of us don’t object to having foreigners immigrate to the US. It is those who come in illegally and then demand free health care, work, free education, and welfare. They don’t want to be a part of our country. They want to speak their own language, have their own culture instead of integrating into being Americans. That is what we object to. I don’t see anything wrong in profiling an illegal because they are breaking our laws. They come over here and commit crimes, join gangs, rob us, kill us, and rape our children (and don’t go to jail) It is not just a few anymore it is a great big share of them. I don’t think it is anybody’s business of other states or people in other states to get involve with Arizona’s law or object to it. We should do everything we can to help them. I was appalled when it was reported that our government objected to Arizona’s law but hadn’t even read it yet. We have a bunch of incompetent leaders including the ones that are going to sue Arizona. They need to do their job and help Arizona with this problem. I wish Texas and California would pass the same laws. I am tired of paying for illegals welfare, health care, education. That is why our state is broke. It cost $42,000 a year for one in our prison system. I don’t think they should have the right to demonstrate in our streets

against our treatment of them as they are law breakers. Their relative shield them from immigration authorities which is another problem. I know that illegals are voting which is against the law that is why congress won’t do anything about stopping the flow coming into our country because they are told to vote Democratic. I think it is wrong for Churches to harbor illegals. We need to vote out our present administration and only put candidates that will pass laws to deal with this problem and amnesty is not the answer. Have you seen the pictures of the Arizona desert where these illegals have passed thru? It is a disaster. Have you gone down there where they are living they have destroyed the homes. They are trash. Arizona doesn’t need these kinds of problems. They need help and answers from the Federal government. What worries me about the new bill being passed in Arizona is that these type of laws are the precursors to a scenario that could bring us closer to being a country similar to Nazi Germany. Chicago entrepreneur gives hope for Afghan women

“We visited Helmand province and found three possible locations to begin a new project for the Afghan people,” said Jan. “Now we’ll go back and figure out which location is more stable and where a project like this would thrive. It’s successful in Bamyan because of the support we receive from the local government, staff and the Afghan women who strongly desire to educate themselves and put money in their pocket.”

Connie Duckworth, Arzu Studio Hope founder and president, wrapped up her six-day tour of Afghanistan, June 12, in Bamyan, where her efforts to create a better quality of life and foster a sense of economic and social independence for Afghan women began. Duckworth invested her time, effort and heart into the central Afghan province, nearly destroyed by Taliban a decade ago, and established Arzu, meaning hope in Dari, a nonprofit organization that provides sustainable income to Afghan women by sourcing and selling the rugs they weave. Afghan rugs, the cornerstone of Arzu Studio Hope, are knit by Afghan weavers within their residences. The weavers participating in the Arzu program fulfill their part of the agreement by sending their children to Arzu-funded schools and obtaining mandatory healthcare. “We’ve seen tremendous improvement in the quality of life for these families,” said Hamid Hekmat, country director of Arzu. “At first the

weavers would spend their money on feeding their children. Then months later they’d spend their money on shoes for their children. Now we’ll go to their homes to deliver wool and we’re seeing TVs and satellite dishes for their TVs.” Bamyan gained international headlines when the Taliban destroyed historical Buddhas, chiseled into the mountainsides centuries ago. The international community, including historical societies, museums and United Nations, pleaded with the Taliban not to destroy the sacred figures, with pledges of financial compensation to stop their attacks. The Taliban refused.

The province, now led by Afghanistan’s only female governor, endured years of conflict between local fighters and Taliban. After the assistance of coalition forces, government aid and nongovernmental organizations, security and stability was established, and the people of Bamyan looked forward to a new beginning. Nine years after the Taliban was ousted from the region nestled between the Hindu Kush Mountains, Duckworth and her team opened the doors to the Bamyan Women’s Center. The facility features a heated indoor laundry room with 12 sinks, tea room, a two-story loom room that houses four-large looms for weaving rugs, two 40-person classrooms that host literacy classes and instructional courses, private toilets and a community courtyard. The building is lit and heated mainly via solar panels, with alternate heating provided by briquette-burning stoves made from recycled materials. The center provided an alternative for local families, whom often had to travel far and through harsh weather to wash their clothes and dishes. During the frigid winter months, the women have to break through ice in the river to wash their clothes and dishes. Duckworth and Razia Jan, the in-country director for Arzu, were pleased with their observations at the women’s community center. Bamyan women played both roles of teacher and student, teaching and solving arithmetic and reading Dari passages from textbooks. Children roamed freely throughout the playground adjacent to the women’s center. Inside the center, women learned how to bake European pastries, which will turn for profit at the local bazaar. “This is amazing,” said Duckworth, who also sits on the Afghan Women’s Council. “It’s amazing to think about where this region was 10 years ago, and look at it now. Women are working and bringing home an income. They’re going to literacy classes and even learning English.” Duckworth and Jan hope to use their efforts and success in Bamyan as a model for future Arzu operations throughout the country, particularly Helmand province.

Corpsmen celebrate Navy Hospital Corps’ 112th birthday during exercise Javelin Thrust By 2nd Lt. Dominic Pitrone, Marine Forces Reserve

Corpsmen with 4th Marine Medical Battalion took a break from their schedule to gather and celebrate the 112th birthday of the Navy Hospital Corps June 17. The corpsmen, who are currently at Hawthorne Army Depot, Nev., to support the Marine Forces Reserve training exercise Javelin Thrust 2010, took a look back at the long-standing relationship between Marines and corpsmen. “There is no place I would rather be today than with the Marines,” said Master Chief Donald Clark, a hospital corpsman with 4th Medical Battalion. “The importance of this celebration is to pass on to future generations the legacy of serving with the Marines.” Clark also explained the not only professional, but personal relationships between Marines and their corpsmen. “When you’re with the Marines it teaches you independence and there is only one goal; taking care of your Marines. As a corpsmen special bond forms between you and your Marines,” Clark said. “In combat the corpsmen need the Marines for security and the Marines need the corpsmen for medical care.” The medical corps was established in 1898 and is the only all enlisted corps in the Navy. Javelin Thrust is an annual exercise conducted by MARFORRES in several different locations in the Southwest. This year, more than 4,500 Marines from ground combat, logistical and air wing units are participating in the training, which resembles a Marine Air Ground Task Force operating in Afghanistan, in terms of both terrain and mission objectives.

San Diego-based ships depart for rim of the Pacific 2010 From Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet Public Affairs

Ships based at Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station North Island began deploying June 15 to the waters off Hawaii for the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise June 23 through Aug. 1. The San Diego ships participating in the world’s largest maritime exercise are USS Benfold (DDG 65), USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Cleveland (LPD 7), USS Comstock (LSD 45), USS Devastator (MCM 6), USS Freedom (LCS 1), USS Hopper (DDG 70), USS McClusky (FFG

41), USS Pioneer (MCM 9), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS Sampson (DDG 102). Hosted by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC demonstrates a commitment to working with global partners in guarding the sea lanes of commerce and communication, protecting national interests abroad and ensuring freedom of navigation as a basis for global peace and prosperity. By design, RIMPAC is a multi-national exercise that prepares forces to be interoperable and ready for a wide range of potential operations. This, in turn, helps ensure stability throughout the Pacific Rim, aiding the development and prosperity of all participating nations. As an exercise, RIMPAC is intended to increase the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of maritime operations by enhancing military-to-military relations and interoperability. New systems make military moves more efficient By Donna Miles American Forces Press Service

With the busiest season for permanent-change-of-station moves under way, officials at U.S. Transportation Command are encouraging servicemembers to take advantage of new systems designed to make the process more convenient and efficient. Transcom launched the new Personally Procured Move, or PPM, system to improve the moving experience for servicemembers who personally move their household goods on military orders, said Dolly Davidson, a change management outreach specialist at Transcom. PPM replaced the old “Do It Yourself,” or DITY, move system. As with the legacy system, servicemembers using PPM can receive up to 95 percent of what it would cost the government to move their goods using a commercial carrier. They can hire a commercial mover if they choose, move some or all of their goods themselves, and pocket any savings they receive. PPM is one of the improvements provided through another system Transcom introduced last year to process and manage household moves, the Defense Personal Property System. DPS is a web-based management system for moving the household goods of military members and Defense Department civilians, Davidson explained. It automates many steps involved in military moves: pre-move counseling, scheduling, tracking, invoicing and claims-filing for household goods shipments. This eliminates the need for servicemembers to schedule appointments at their base to arrange their household goods moves face-toface, she said, allowing them to make arrangements anywhere, any time. “In DPS, you can go in 24/7, you can counsel yourself, you can put in your shipment and move arrangements, and everything else is done automatically,” she said. “You can do it from your laptop, from your work station, even your living room couch. And you can

also track your shipments online, too.” In addition to convenience, DPS has shown initial cost savings to the government. That’s a big factor for the military, which spends about $2 billion a year for more than 550,000 household moves, Transcom reported. With all these factors in DPS’ favor, Transcom officials are encouraged by the dramatic increase in its use since the Personally Procured Move rollout. “The services and the servicemembers have definitely embraced it,” Davidson said. “[Usage] went up to about 50 percent right from the get-go.” Now, with the legacy system expected to remain operational until December along with DPS, Transcom is particularly interested in ensuring servicemembers are comfortable using the new system. “We really want them to understand the advantages, and why it’s best for them,” Davidson said Transcom officials encourage servicemembers to register their household-move experiences through a new online customer satisfaction survey found at http://www.move.mil. The results will be pivotal in helping the command select the best-performing companies for future military moves, officials said.

Soldier suicide rates increasing due to moral injury Military leaders are working hard to reduce troop suicides, but the fact that the suicide rate has recently risen has them scrambling for answers. The success of our military depends on the psychological health of our soldiers, so it is important to all of us that experts discuss and research this issue and discover some lasting answers. The rate of suicide in the Marine Corps is higher than that of any other branch of service. The Marine Corps suffers 24 suicides per 100,000, 11 more than they did in 2006. In comparison, the civilian suicide rate is 20 per 100,000. One interesting theory on the rising suicide rate has come to the fore, and it is called “moral injury.” Soldiers who suffer moral injury have been exposed to or been part of something that goes against their basic belief system. Some killings can be justifiable but unintended, such as civilian killings. Participation in such actions may violate a core belief system, which results in moral injury. Witnessing or taking part in a battlefield indiscretion can also run counter to core beliefs and produce moral injury. June 18, 2010 marked the 70th anniversary of Charles de Gaulle’s historic call to arms for the French to resist the Nazis and also Winston Churchill’s “finest hour” address. Another anniversary might have gone unnoticed were it not for a brilliant new biography of a man who gave his life in a failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. “Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy” by Eric Metaxas, is a major biography of this giant of faith published 65 years after his death. Bonhoeffer came from a family of intellectuals. His father was Germany’s leading psychiatrist. His siblings succeeded in their chosen fields. Dietrich became a theologian to the surprise and initial disappointment of his parents and puzzlement of his siblings. Twice Bonhoeffer visited the United States. On the first occasion he studied at the liberal Union Theological Seminary in New York where he met the theological giants of the time, including Reinhold Niebuhr. Bonhoeffer quickly tired of the “God-lite” theology at Union and decided to visit churches that held more substantive beliefs. He discovered an African-American church in Harlem where Adam Clayton Powell

Sr. preached riveting sermons and people joyfully worshipped God as if they actually believed He exists. Bonhoeffer’s theology might be summed up in a letter he wrote in 1936 to his brother-in-law, Rudiger Schleicher: “One cannot simply read the Bible, like other books. One must be prepared really to enquire of it. Only thus will it reveal itself. Only if we expect from it the ultimate answer, shall we receive it.” Bonhoeffer struggled over whether to join the conspiracy to assassinate Hitler and that struggle is chronicled in Metaxas’ book. His may have been a simple faith surrounded by theological muscle, but its application -- which he knew might cost him his life -- was a classic struggle of flesh vs. spirit faced by all who seek to take God seriously. Metaxas writes of the attempt by Hitler to create a state church that would give him moral cover for his immoral acts, especially his goal of exterminating Jews. The willingness of so many to sign on to this rogue and apostate church warns us moderns about the dangers of a church that is more interested in advancing an earthly political agenda than the Kingdom of

Metaxas writes, “Bonhoeffer thought it the plain duty of a Christian -- and the privilege and honor -- to suffer with those who suffered.” That’s why he considered it both privilege and honor to be executed at the Flossenburg Concentration Camp on April 9, 1945 where his body was burned in a pile of bodies, many of which were likely Jewish God. Clerics are seen sieg-heiling and speaking lovingly of their Fuhrer with a reverence that convicts them of spiritual adultery. Bonhoeffer bravely stood against them as he participated in the formation of the “Confessing Church,” which, among other things, spoke up for the Jews. The high regard in which the Bonhoeffer family was held in Germany and their supreme intellect temporarily protected Dietrich from the hands of the Gestapo. Inevitably he was arrested, but even then he won the respect of prison guards, who offered him special treatment, which he refused. Further complicating things and adding to his temptation to live was that he had fallen in love with a young woman, 18 years his junior. Their love letters, mostly written when Dietrich was in prison, are riveting. Metaxas writes, “Bonhoeffer thought it the plain duty of a Christian -- and

Bonhoeffer’s memorial service at Holy Trinity Church in London on July 27, 1945 was broadcast in Germany where his parents listened. The sermon by Bonhoeffer’s longtime friend, Bishop George Bell, is reprinted in the book. In an age (then and now) full of “cheap grace,” here is a book that will challenge Christians and non-Christians alike. Few books can claim to be a “must-read.” This is one.

The one thing I don’t care for in this song is the request to “give me” that “one moment in time.” Unless she is referring to what we are all given…times when we can shine and excel in our daily life. It is in those moments that we need to seize them and make the most of them. We will then feel that eternal joy. The question is then, what is that talent or passion that you get excited about? If you follow your heart, it will lead you to find the answer. Most people don’t recognize their talents right away. In most of us, it takes a little trial and error, time for discovery, to really know what we have talent for and what stirs our passions. However, it is by developing our talents that we bring joy to our own soul. Joshua L. Liebman said: “Many people go throughout life committing partial suicide, destroying their talents, energies, and creative qualities. Indeed, to learn how to be good to oneself is often more difficult than to learn how to be good to others.” It is said that by discovering and increasing our talents is one way in which we can be good to ourselves, and it is also very likely that many other people will be blessed as a result of that goodness. Whatever the case, now may be the perfect time to dedicate yourself to study and learn about that particular medium that will work for you…then do it! I have been taught this philosophy since I was young, and I have several areas that I am excited about pursuing right now. Whatever our desires, we need to push ourselves to make them a reality. Just dreaming about them or

thinking, “Well, maybe someday,” rarely will get the job done. To be able to really reach our potential, we need to move beyond the many self-imposed limits. We have so much within us if we would only give ourselves the joy of exploring. One author said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…we ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God.” That is what we really need to remember. Let us not do as William James has said, “Most people live…in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their soul’s resources.” By our persistence and hard work we can unlock our God-given potential. Each of us has the ability and capacity within us to accomplish everyday things in very extraordinary ways. We can see it all around us if we are looking. We see those working to save lives in ER rooms, or at the scene of an accident. We see single parents juggle all they have and still provide great homes. We see people of all walks come together when hurricanes and other emergencies present themselves. And we see those in foreign countries helping the innocent while at war and being fired upon. In closing, I would like to share with you a teaching I came across some time ago that is now starting to get a lot of attention. It is called “The Secret.” This teaching has been used by most of life’s masters. It is the secret of “The Law of Attraction.” As I mentioned above, we all have talents and desires. What we need to do for ourselves is set the laws of attraction and intention in support of our desired outcomes. I hope to speak on this a bit more over the next couple of weeks. Till then try to find and watch the video. I believe it has something for everyone. We all have greatness within us. Learn what yours is and develop it. It is my hope that you give yourself that gift this week. It will bring you and others greater joy in the days ahead. Gates, Mullen comment on McChrystal situation Judgment and civilian control of the military were at the heart of President Barack Obama’s decision to accept Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal’s resignation as the NATO and U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today.Video Gates and Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both said they “fully support” Obama’s decision and his nomination of Army Gen. David H. Petraeus to replace McChrystal. “Like the president, I deeply regret the circumstances that made this decision necessary,” Gates said during a Pentagon news conference. “General McChrystal is one of the finest officers and warriors of his generation, who has an extraordinary record in leading the fight against some of this country’s most lethal enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Gates and Mullen said McChrystal showed poor judgment with regard to the Rolling Stone profile in which he and members of his staff were critical of administration officials. The situation “has made his continued service in that post and as a member of the national security team untenable,” Gates said. “The statements and attitudes reported in the news media are unacceptable under our form of government, and are inconsistent with the high standards expected of military leaders.” The chairman said he was stunned when he read the Rolling Stone profile. “I cannot excuse his lack of judgment with respect to the Rolling Stone article or a command climate he evidently permitted that was at best disrespectful of civilian authority,” Mullen said. “We do not have that luxury, those of us in uniform. We do not have the right, nor should we ever assume the prerogative, to cast doubt upon the ability or mock the motives of our civilian leaders, elected or appointed.” Military personnel are and must remain a neutral instrument of the government, he said. Servicemembers must be accountable to and respectful of civilian leaders “no matter which party holds sway or which person holds a given office,” Mullen said. Military leaders must step down when they lose the trust and confidence of civilian leaders, the chairman said. “The job we are called upon to do for the nation is too important, the lives we are sworn to protect too precious, to permit any doubt or uncertainty in that regard,” he said. “General McChrystal did the right thing by offering to resign.” Both men stressed that while the leadership is changing, the strategy in Afghanistan is not. “Our troops and coalition partners are making extraordinary sacrifices in the fight against al-Qaida and its extremist allies,” Gates said. “Our singular focus must be on succeeding in this mission without distraction or division.” Gates said that he was concerned that the effort in Afghanistan would lose time and focus if a new commander came in without knowledge of the situation. One concern that the secretary had was to minimize any impact a change would have on the conduct of the war in Afghanistan. “I will tell you that … it was the president who first raised Petraeus’ name,” Gates said. “And it immediately, to me, answered a lot of the concerns that I had.” As the U.S. Central Command chief, Petraeus has been part of the discussions on the Afghan strategy all along. The general was in charge of U.S. military operations in Iraq during the troop surge there, and military and civilian efforts there have paid off. “The key [in Afghanistan] was that we not lose our focus and be further distracted for a period of months,” Gates said. “And that’s why the selection of General Petraeus was so important, in my view. Now the president has established the strategy, but from my perspective, General Petraeus will have the flexibility to look at the campaign plan and the approach and all manner of things when he gets to Afghanistan, assuming Senate confirmation.” The Senate Armed Services Committee has scheduled Petraeus’ confirmation hearings for June 29, and committee officials promised an early vote on the matter. NATO still must act to appoint the general as the commander of the International Security Assistance Force. “No one – be they adversaries or friends, or especially our troops – should misinterpret these personnel changes as a slackening of this government’s commitment to the mission in Afghanistan,” Gates said. “We remain committed to that mission and to the comprehensive civilmilitary strategy ordered by the president to achieve our goals there.” Both Gates and Mullen praised McChrystal’s service. “General McChrystal and many of his immediate staff have served and protected this country in combat with great courage, valor, skill and devotion for many years,” Gates said. “Their outstanding record of service remains intact for posterity, and is deserving of our lasting recognition and profound gratitude.” Mullen said McChrystal is a friend with whom he worked when the general served as the director of the Joint Staff for a year. “He’s a fine soldier and a good man,” Mullen said of McChrystal. “He has served his country nobly and with great distinction for more than For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

To my liking, don’t expect a soft ride, as 3.5’s sporty heritage results in a firm handler, not a marshmallow bump eliminator. Granted, accessing the rear seat is cumbersome for many, but once in the back seat, there’s more room than one expects as long as you’re not a 6-footer plus, where legroom becomes a bit tight. A major drawback of the coupe is cargo space, where an extremely small trunk (only 8.2 cubic feet) limits your cargo options. Thank goodness for the 60/40 split rear seat, which helps a bit. If you buy a sedan, the trunk expands to over 15 cubic feet. The 3.5 SR Premium package costs $1,470 more, and includes XM Satellite, Bose 9-speaker audio system, USB port iPod, rear camera display, Bluetooth, and dual zone air and climate control. A Technology package added another $1,780 to the price, featuring Navigation with 6.5 inch display, 9.3 gig music hard drive, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a DVD Player. The greatest rivalries in sports Last week, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics to win the NBA championship. The two teams have combined to win each of the last three titles, twice against each other. Altogether, the Celtics and Lakers have won a combined 33 NBA championships, compared to 31 for every other team in the league combined. They’ve faced each other

in the Finals 12 times, about one out every five. No other team has even been to the NBA Finals 12 times. Celtics/Lakers is a legendary rivalry. The league’s oldest rivalry also features two of its most historically successful franchises. The Bears and Packers combined to win 17 NFL titles before the Super Bowl even existed. The Packers have won more NFL titles (12) than any other team in the league; the Bears are second (9).

Washington vs. Dallas Maybe an even better-known rivalry than Green Bay/Chicago, this one has lost a little of its luster during the past decade, with Dallas enduring a championship drought and Washington seldom even competitive during the Daniel Snyder era. That said, this rivalry’s legacy is safe, with enough memorable games and historical animosity to carry it through another decade of Jerry Jones and Snyder. The glory days for Dallas/Washington were the ‘70s and ‘80s, when both teams were good, but the roots of this rivalry go back to before the Cowboys were even an official team, and their eventual owner, Clint Murchison Jr., acquired the rights to “Hail to the Redskins.” Washington got the name back, and owner George Preston Marshall unexpectedly reversed his opposition to the expansion franchise in Dallas. Honorable Mentions Steelers/Browns doesn’t carry much weight right now, but it will if the Browns ever get good again. Lest I be accused of East Coast bias, Chiefs/Raiders is a pretty big deal. Really, any AFC West team vs. the Raiders. Patriots/Colts is the most relevant and intriguing rivalry in the league today.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs Not only is it the oldest rivalry in league history, it’s got a ton of history, some of which even goes beyond the rink, including the tension between Englishspeaking Toronto and French-speaking Montreal. Honorable Mentions From a purely historical standpoint, Oilers/Stars might be second on the list, but in the late 1990s and early 2000s, no rivalry was bigger than Red Wings/Avalanche. On an individual level, Wayne Gretzky/Mario Lemieux is fascinating less because of their headto-head matchups than their dominance in general, and Sidney Crosby/Alex Ovechkin is quickly becoming a compelling league-wide attraction.


Alabama vs. Auburn The SEC is so competitive these days that there are lots of choices in that conference, but nothing else with the historical animosity of the Iron Bowl. Notre Dame vs. USC Notre Dame leads the series, with a 42-34-5 record, but both teams have produced 11 national champions — to the extent those really exist in college football — and seven Heisman Trophy winners. They’re storied programs with a long and competitive rivalry stretching back to the 1920s.

GOLF I’m told that Jack Nicklaus vs. Arnold Palmer was a huge rivalry, but I don’t follow golf closely enough to write on the matter with any authority, and I’m not entirely convinced that golf is a sport in the first place, so let’s just acknowledge that I’ve mentioned it, and move on.

TENNIS Chris Evert vs. Martina Navratilova With all due respect to the men’s game, this is easily the most storied rivalry in tennis. Borg and McEnroe met 14 times. McEnroe and Connors, 34. Federer and Nadal stand at 21. Martina and Chrissy played each other in singles 80 times, more than the other three rivalries combined. Navratilova led the series by a narrow margin of 43 matches to 37, including 14 Grand Slam Finals as singles players. They met in the final of the French Open for the first time in 1975 and the last time in 1986, with a competitive rivalry spanning over a decade.

Johnny Mac was colorful and obnoxious, Borg calm and reserved. Connors was ornery, but in a different way than Johnny Mac. I’d argue for Steffi Graf and Monica Seles here, as well. From 1991-93, Seles won seven slams, Graf five, and everyone else a combined total of zero. They were not just each other’s greatest rival; they were effectively each other’s only rival. Star triumvirate in Miami could be triple trouble down the road

LeBron James. Taking a pass from Dwyane Wade. Coming off a pick set by Chris Bosh. Or, next time downcourt, Wade slashing through the lane. Kicking it out to James at 22 feet. Whose shot instead becomes an alley-oop that Bosh goes improbably high to catch and finish. There’s a version, too, among the dozens in which Bosh initiates the play and it’s James or Wade throwing down two points on some thoroughly overmatched opponent. Essentially, if all three of the NBA’s megastar, soon-to-be free agents were to sign with the Miami Heat, we could have the equivalent of gold-medal moments like that 82 times each season. And another 20-24 times in the postseason, unless this group got so good it needs only 16. But what worked so well in Beijing might not play out as happily in Memphis, Sacramento, New Orleans or even in South Florida. What was great for the U-S-of-A for a few weeks one summer might not be good for the N-Bof-A over five, six or seven years.

The Miami Plan -- or the Miami Astound Machine, if you will -- is as dangerous as it is fascinating. And we don’t just mean on the court. With the salary-cap space that the Heat cleared in the days leading up to last week’s Draft -- and with another roster tweak, such as unloading Michael Beasley and his contract, or with a wink-wink, slightly-less-than”max” adjustment on the part of the targeted titans -- Miami would be positioned to sign not one, not two but three of the marquee names hitting the market Thursday at 12:01 a.m. EDT. The anchor piece, of course, would be Wade, who already has what a lot of these 2010 free agents will be seeking as they shop for teams in the coming crazy days: A championship ring. Coincidence, then, that among the top-tier guys, the Heat shooting guard is the one likeliest to stay put? Hardly. Wade doesn’t need a new team, a new organization, a new approach. He just needs renewed ones, on all those fronts. That’s where Miami president Pat Riley comes in, with all his glamour and intensity and pedigree and powerbreakfast speaking skills. Air-dropping Riley into Akron, Ohio, to make the sales presentation to James before or after Riley’s rivals from New York, New Jersey, Chicago or the L.A. Clippers make theirs seems like unleashing a pit bull in the poodle salon. None of the others has done what Riley has done or gone where he’s gone, and most of that is precisely what James claims to want to do and where he wants to go. Three of those pursuers -- the Knicks, the Nets and the Clippers -- have been the worst teams in the league for most of James’ lifetime, and the Bulls haven’t chased an NBA title since James was chasing puberty. Riley has a fistful of rings, including one won in 2006. He came downstairs that season to coach the Heat to a title and presumably would do the same in 2010-11 if James and then Bosh joined Wade on one stardrenched roster. likely as Wade staying put, despite the Toronto power forward’s comment about being a “centerpiece” guy.) Let’s pause for a moment to appreciate the wonderfulness, or at least significance, of this. While that core couldn’t necessarily be classified as the NBA’s three best players uniting to kick the rest of the league’s butts -- you probably would want James, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard for ultimate formidability -- it would be close enough. Closer, certainly, than this league ever has seen before, with the possible exception of a few of Bill Russell’s Celtics teams. People thought the G2 conference

up in Toronto was some sort of dazzling assemblage of superpower leaders? Wade, James and Bosh would be a Gee, Three! summit. In theory, it would be can’t-miss. A fantasy-leaguer’s dream. A rewind of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, only what they might have been like playing alongside Karl Malone. And an incredible experiment regardless of your chosen field of study. As a basketball experiment, it would be fascinating to see the Xs and Os brought to life by such remarkable talents. Who would initiate the action? How would their skills mesh? Where would the outside shooting come from? Then again, with double-teams demanded at three spots, simple math says there would be 2 ½ guys left mostly open much of the time. As chemistry and psychology experiments, we could learn much about the dynamics of ego, the power of sacrifice and the ingredients needed to bind together such strong personalities. What would the pecking order be? We pretty much know who’d be No. 3, but how would Nos. 1 and 2 get divvied up? Would Wade have squatter’s rights because it was his town first? If so, what’s higher in the royal flow-chart than King? As a financial experiment, we might finally get to see how the New York

Yankees’ methodology of team-building works in pro basketball. The NBA largely has been protected from that by its salary cap, but this would be as close as a hoops team can get to opening the wallet for the best of the best. Even if a spend-spend-spend approach isn’t quite what the Yankees do (they’re more like spend-spendspend-spend to about the 25th power), it would force Miami and the rest of the league to find out what happens when most of the remaining players are brought in on minimum contracts. Would the Gee, Three! be surrounded by marginal talent? Or would they, on their reputations and expectations of success, lure enough solid teammates who’d take serious pay cuts to nail down rings themselves? As a cultural experiment, seeing how such a galaxy of stars would shine away from the gyms would be fascinating, too. Would they hang together? Would they share off-court opportunities? In other words, would Bosh get a puppet and would Charles Barkley be elbowed out of the T-Mobile spots? Finally, as a political and competitive experiment ... well, here’s where things get dicey. We’d start by assuming that Cleveland and Toronto, abandoned by James and Bosh respectively, would be toast. At least for a (long) while. But what about other markets and their preference for building toward a championship the old-fashioned way? Could they compete with the instant mix of superstars, money and minimal stirring? What, too, would it say about James and Wade as competitors? Would friendship and the idea of dominating the NBA together appeal to them more than butting heads year after year to determine who’s best? As great as the first Dream Team was, the NBA would have lost something if Magic Johnson and Larry Bird hadn’t been rivals, if Michael Jordan hadn’t locked both of them in his sights, and so on. Aaron Colton brings a clean image to streetbike freestyle In recent years, streetbike freestyle has traded in its bad-boy image to become a legitimate competition that hosts a more professional showcase. And Aaron Colton has been one of the biggest catalysts for the switch. He says his biggest accomplishment isn’t any one of the many trophies he’s won. Instead, it’s “bringing a clean image to the sport of streetbike freestyle. I’ve been able to put a clean face, a strong younger image on this sport.” Often labeled a child prodigy, Aaron has gone on something of a rampage of wins. His trophy list includes first place at the 2006 XDL National Championship; second place at the 2007 XDL National Championship; first place at the 2007 King of the South Individual Freestyle; first place at the 2007 XSBA Individual Freestyle and an unusual third place at the 2007 Stuntwars Individual Freestyle; first place at the 2008 XDL Indy GP Individual Freestyle; and first place at the 2008 Starboyz Stuntfest Individual Freestyle. Aaron was recently taken under the tutelage of World Champion stunter Christian Pfeiffer at the 2008 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, where Pfeiffer selected Aaron as the next big streetbike stunting superstar. Aaron says, “Christian has sort of the same clean image that I have, except over in Europe.” He compares Christian’s accomplishments with his own, saying, “What I offer that’s different is that I’m the first young person in my sport bringing sort of that family feeling you see at motocross events. I think it’s something that’s catching on and is helping put some momentum behind the sport as a whole.”

Ward manhandles Green Oakland- in the final bout of the second stage of the Super Six World Boxing Classic To u r n a m e n t Andre Ward successfully defended his WBA super middleweight title and a top ranking against heavy handed and very confident Allan Green on Saturday Night in front of eighty seven hundred ninety seven very vociferous fans. All three judges scored the fight the same 120108 for Ward, who clearly dominated the contest and proved much superior fighter than his adversary. Fighters say win today and look spectacular next time. That must have been the strategy this time, because despite dominating performance it was an ugly grab fest that will not bring the champion any new fans. “I expected a tougher fight,” said Ward after he had his hand raised in victory:” It will be difficult to fight Dirrell in the next stage, but I will put it aside until then.” Both guys came out a little tight. Green did not look intimidated and used a stiff jab. Not easily hit Ward was able to land a few counter left hooks. It was an ugly tactical fight early with neither opponent establishing clear dominance. Continuing an ugly clutch and grab festival Ward took control of the fight in the third round finding a lot of success fighting inside; he pinned Green against the ropes for most of the stanza and landed powerful hooks and uppercuts. Green tried to keep the fight at a distance in the forth but was not able to keep crafty champion off of him. Green did not have plan B and even though the fifth stanza was fought at a distance it was only because Ward wanted it that way. England are out of the World Cup after losing 4-1 to Germany in South Africa, leaving millions of fans disappointed. Controversially, England were not given a goal when 2-1 down, despite the ball crossing the line, and Germany will now face Argentina in the quarter finals. I think that’s the appropriate thing,” Gulati said. “I want to hear his views, express some of mine and see what makes sense. I think he’s done a very good job. I want to make that very clear. … When we’ve had our `A’ team, the record is pretty darn good. … The problem is that our expectations have risen pretty sharply and there have been some performances where we didn’t play as well as we would have liked.” Gulati said a coach can do only so much. “I think it ultimately comes down to players,” he said. “The expectations have to be realistic. The players that are representing the U.S. are not players at Arsenal and Inter and Real Madrid and Barcelona and Chelsea and Manchester United and so on. The players we were playing against in some of these situations are.” Before Bradley was hired, Gulati held talks with former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann, who lives in California. Klinsmann withdrew after Major League Soccer refused to guarantee access to players for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Copa America in 2007. A member of Germany’s World Cup team in 1990, 1994 and 1998, Klinsmann coached his nation’s team to a third-place finish as host in 2006. He agreed in January 2008 to become coach of Bayern Munich the following summer, but was fired in April 2009 with the club in third place in the Bundesliga following its quarterfinal elimination from the Champions League. Klinsmann then moved back to California with his family, and last month he wouldn’t say whether he’d be interested in taking over the U.S. team. At the time, Klinsmann said he hoped Bradley kept the position for a long time. For Gulati, domestic and foreign coaches both have advantages. “Having someone who understands the mentality of Americans and American players is a plus. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” he said. “On the other side of that, it’s also a plus to have played in a World Cup final and coached in a World Cup final, and we don’t have anyone that fits that in the United States.” A charismatic coach would assist in marketing the team. “Would we be in the news and capture some interest by doing that? Sure. But we capture far more interest

U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati says the American team did not meet his expectations at the World Cup and he likely will meet with Bob Bradley after the tournament to discuss the coach’s future. Bradley was hired in December 2006 and has a contract running through the end of the year. The Americans were eliminated last weekend in the second round with a 2-1 overtime loss to Ghana. “I think the team is capable of more,” Gulati said Monday during a one-hour assessment. “I think the players know it. I think Bob knows it. And so at that level we’re disappointed we didn’t get to play another 90 minutes at least.” Gulati described Bradley as being “very disappointed” with the team’s outcome. “The missed opportunity is partly a chance to get to the quarters and the matchup with Uruguay, but it’s also a missed opportunity to stay in the American public’s eyes for another four, five, six days, maybe 10 days, when interest is at an all-time high,” Gulati said. “I have no doubt there will still be people at bars watching games at strange times, that the TV ratings will still be good. He also revealed he met with Fabio Capello three years ago about a possible job before the Italian agreed to become England’s coach. Gulati said the meeting in London included Bradley and Capello’s son, and the discussion was about a position as director of soccer or working with youth teams. “He said he was looking forward after being in the cauldron of Real Madrid and other places, to a little bit less pressure, a little bit more privacy,” Gulati said. “It didn’t quite work out that way, I guess.” According to Gulati, talks never progressed. Bruce Arena has been the only coach to lead the U.S. at consecutive World Cups, taking the Americans to a quarterfinal finish in 2002 before firstround elimination in 2006. Gulati then made the change. Gulati didn’t think the national team necessarily would go stale under a twoterm coach. “I would say the sense was that 12 years would be too long.” he said. But, he also said: “He may want a different challenge. I don’t know.” Gulati took notice that all five U.S.

goals at this World Cup were scored by midfielders: three by Landon Donovan, one by Clint Dempsey and one by Michael Bradley. And in 2006, Dempsey was the only American to score. “We’ve gone two World Cups without a forward scoring a goal. That’s not a good thing. And that’s not blaming the guys who have been playing forward for us. It’s just a statement of fact,” he said. “However we evaluate a coach in a short-term situation like the World Cup, the broader issue is we’ve got to get better development, better players at the other end of it. And that is not something you do in a year or two. And that’s everything else we’re doing in our system or trying to do, whether it’s the development academy, whether it’s MLS having youth teams, whether it’s reaching out further to the Hispanic and African-American communities. … “I don’t think it takes a lot of watching to know that (Carlos) Tevez and (Lionel) Messi have a different control of the ball than most of our players or most of the players in the world, for that matter. So we’ve got to be better. Players have to be better, sure. And I take responsibility for that that, on where the sport is.”

In order to keep a prospective employer’s attention, your resume must create immediate interest and provoke action. It’s important to be concise because every second counts,” continues Smith. How do you do this? Smith outlines several important considerations to note when creating or updating a resume.

There is no substitute for professionalism

Your resume should be visually appealing. “This includes suitable font,” says Smith. “Job-seekers should use the Times New Roman, Courier or Arial fonts, no smaller in size than 10 and no larger than 12.” Smith also counsels students to use professional quality paper in beige, white or gray. Definitely stay away from pink paper, and don’t even consider clouds in the background or flowers on the border.

Whether an employee or a prospect, it is important to remember that the way people conduct themselves outside of the workplace is a personal reflection on them. “During a job search, most candidates take great care to ensure that they are dressing, communicating and representing themselves professionally,” Gray says. “On the job, however, employees sometimes get comfortable in the work environment and become less professional over time. This can lead to a less than professional reputation and hinder future opportunities.” Social media Web sites present a new forum to be considered with an eye toward professionalism. Gray advises job candidates and employees alike to remove personal information and never post questionable images or negative information about a coworker, boss or the company. “We’ve all heard the story about the employee that called in sick and then later the same day posted a smiling photo of him while sitting at a sporting event,” Gray says. Those who are out there looking for employment can take heart in the skills they apply to the search. Those same strengths can help them succeed when they accept a position. And once employed, Gray reminds everyone to “remember that every day on the job is an interview and screening process for an employee’s future.”

Is your resume working for you? There’s never been a better time to take a close look and make sure it is. With today’s high rate of unemployment, many Americans are competing in a tight job market. Will your resume grab the attention of a prospective employer? Does it accurately reflect your qualifications? A resume is an essential selling tool in any job search. The document presents a clear, concise outline of your qualifications, skills and accomplishments. “The function of a resume isn’t to get you a job, but to get you the interview,” says Tammy Smith, director of career services at Brown Mackie College - Hopkinsville. “It’s up to you to land the job.” Smith’s responsibilities at Brown Mackie College - Hopkinsville include guiding students through the process of creating high-performance resumes. “Employers spend an average of 15 seconds reading a submitted resume,

Customize content for each individual position. It helps to clearly emphasize your specific skills that relate to the open position of interest. Smith advises students customize the resume for each job opportunity. “List duties from prior positions in order of preference relative to the job you want the most, not the job you had. Don’t include responsibilities that you don’t want to do again,” she says. Eliminate job information that is more than 10 years old. Old information is no longer relevant. She also reminds students to be prepared to discuss the content of the resume at the interview. Use active language and keywords. When writing your resume, avoid using passive language. Place achievements and results within each job description on the resume. This demonstrates capabilities and responsibility. “When describing job duties, you must use strong action verbs,” Smith says. Action verbs, such as implemented, improved, operated and earned, strengthen a resume, making it more powerful and appealing. “Next, it is crucial to use keywords,” says Smith. Keywords can be a single word or a phrase that summarizes your core competencies. These are words or phrases others would use to search online for applicants that could fill a position of interest to you. “This is especially important when posting your resume online with search engines such as careerbuilder.com or monster.com,” Smith continues. Be prepared for unexpected opportunities. Always ensure your resume is up to date. “You never know when the perfect career opportunity will knock,” says Smith. Remember, your resume is the first impression you make to an employer. It is a selling tool that highlights the skills and experience you can contribute to the employer’s workplace. It structures the interview, providing a framework of topics to discuss. A resume also reminds employers of you when you’re not there, and can help an employer justify bringing you on board.

Independence Day has new meaning This week we will celebrate the independence of our great nation, gained through the blood and sacrifice of our ancestors. This is the day we were

meant to honor our way of life and the freedoms we enjoy. Many of us disregard the true meaning of the holiday, myself included, I had forgotten the sacrifice our independence demanded. July 4th became little more than a day off work, punctuated by an excuse for family and friends to gather with the added attraction of fireworks. As in years past, there will be picnics and barbecues and fireworks. Some things will not change.

This year, for me, the significance will be different. We are not free in the same way as we were a few years ago. The events of September 11, changed that. It forced us to come face to face with what our way of life represents. Those tragic events woke this nation from centuries of complacency and reminded us what our freedom is worth. The veiled promises of terrorist acts to come may change the way we celebrate

this year, but we will celebrate with rekindled determination This year our celebration of freedom has a restored sense of reality. I hope that each of us will see in our minds, the faces that flashed across our television screens of those who will be with us in spirit only this year. Those whose lives were stolen away in a foolish terrorist attempt to weaken our nation. Forever imprinted in our memories, are the gruesome images before, during and after the dreadful events of 9/11. Behind the surface gaiety, there are now absolute memories of lives sacrificed for our people and their freedom. I take solace in the knowledge that the intent of terrorists to weaken this nation and its people has had the opposite effect. Our sense of patriotism is renewed, our faith stronger than ever. For those who lost family and friends, facing another holiday without your loved ones present, let freedom ring in the memories of the fallen. They are all heroes who gave their lives because we, as a people, remain free, an independent nation, more indivisible than ever. God Bless America.

The Price of Freedom Is there a price for freedom? Many people would have different opinions on this subject. There are many things that helped to get this country to be free. The Declaration of Independence is one of them. The fourth section say’s “These united colonies are… and ought to be free and independent.” The United States became a nation in which ordinary citizens could have a strong voice in their own government. John Locke believed that people had natural rights - rights that belonged to them because they were human, not because governments or kings had granted them these rights. Therefore the Declaration of Independence has a lot to do with freedom. Many people have died in order for this country to achieve freedom. They died during wars like World War II, The Vietnam war, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Desert Storm. There certainly is a huge price for freedom, but freedom is such a huge end result that maybe, you simply can not put a price on it. Please remember all those in our Armed Forces that fight to bring us all freedom. Happy Independence Day.

Thomas Jefferson from a college freshman

Thomas Jefferson was at the center of American history for more than half a century. He was a man of many talents, he was the author of the Declaration of Independence, and he was the third President of the United States. Thomas Jefferson had many talents. One of his talents was that he was an architectural engineer. With this talent he helped design many things like the city of Washington D.C., the University of Virginia, and his home called Monticello. He designed the rotunda for the University of Virginia library in 1821 (Greene 37). Another talent that he had was that he was a really good writer. Only Abraham Lincoln was equal in writing talents as Jefferson. It was said of Jefferson that he “could put words together and fashion them into a powerful weapon,” (Greene 10). He also was a great educator. Jefferson would study fifteen hours every day when he was young, because learning was important to him, (Greene 11). He wanted people to have a chance to learn. So he started the University of Virginia. He planned the buildings and chose the teachers. He was known as the father of the University of Virginia, (Greene 40). He was one of the leading scientists of his day in America. He tried new ways of planting crops and raising animals, (Greene 37). He was one of the first farmers to grow tomatoes in the United States, (Greene 25). One of his other talents was that he was a creative inventor. He invented a machine that could write two copies of a letter at the same time. He invented a tiny elevator called a “dumbwaiter” to carry things up to his dining room from the basement. Jefferson also invented storm windows, a chair that turned, and much more, (Patterson 25). Jefferson was chairman of the

committee to write the Declaration of Independence. He was asked by the other four members of the committee to write the first draft of the Declaration. When he wrote the Declaration of Independence, he wrote it with common words and phrases so all could understand the plain truth of his statements. He did not consult a book or pamphlet when writing it. Everything came straight from his mind and heart, (Patterson 36). He made many changes to the Declaration before he was happy with what he wrote. He was known throughout the colonies as a great writer on political issues. It took him seventeen days to write the Declaration of Independence, from June 11 to June 28, 1776, (Patterson 35). In some of the Declaration of Independence he wrote “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed...” This was a revolutionary idea that governments were meant to serve people, not the other way around, (Patterson 36). Congress voted for the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This was the first Independence Day of the United States of America. Thomas Jefferson had success as the third President of the United States. He was the first U.S. president to begin his term in the building known as the White House, (Hargrove 69). His most important presidential decision was to buy the Louisiana Territory from France. This was the greatest real estate deal in the history of the United States. The United States got 828,000 square miles of land for $12,000,000, about two cents an acre, (Hargrove 72). Today, the land that Jefferson purchased includes the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Over night, the United States became one of the largest countries in the world, larger than all the nations of western Europe combined, (Hargrove 73). This purchase allowed the United States to expand west over much of the continent. Jefferson thought it was important to explore the continent. So he appointed Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory and the Rocky Mountains in May 1804. In doing this, he hoped to find a water route across the United States to the Pacific Ocean. While he was President, Jefferson decided to use force against the North African rulers so they would not attack American ships. At that time, pirates from the Barbary Coast of Africa attacked American trade ships and

demanded ransom. The United States attacked Tripoli, and by doing this, Jefferson sent a message that the United States was not going to be taken advantage of, (Hargrove 85). Jefferson was a very informal President. He dressed informally, and he ignored titles. When he became president he ended the levees and the formal dinners. Instead of the formal dinners where they would seat people at a long table according to how important they were, Jefferson invited about a dozen guests at a time to the White House. He used a round table instead of a long table, and who ever got there first could have the seat he or she wanted, (Morris 51). Twice a year, on New Year’s Day and July 4th, Jefferson would open up the White House to everyone. He greeted everybody and invited them to have punch, cake, and other refreshments, (Morris 51). Jefferson was president for two terms. At the end of his second term, he announced that he would follow the example of George Washington and not seek a third term. One of America’s greatest presidencies had come to an

end (Hargrove 79). Thomas Jefferson was a great American who shared his great talents, wrote the Declaration of Independence, and led this country as the third President. Chapman System’s adult education university appoints 40-year military education veteran Gary Woods as vice chancellor Brandman University, a fully accredited adult education university within the Chapman University System, today announced that Gary Woods has joined the University’s senior leadership team as vice chancellor, military and veterans programs, demonstrating the University’s deep and long-standing commitment to provide high-quality and affordable education opportunities to members of the nation’s armed forces. In this leadership role, Woods will be responsible for developing and providing programs that meet the education and training needs of military personnel, veterans and their spouses. With nearly 40 years experience serving in leadership positions for military voluntary education programs, he has worked on college campuses

and Marine, Navy, Army and Air Force installations throughout the world, including serving as the director of educational opportunities for the Department of Defense. “Since our inception 50-plus years ago, we have been committed to providing high-quality education opportunities to our men and women in uniform,” said Brandman University Chancellor Gary Brahm. “Gary has a profound understanding of the education and training needs of military personnel, veterans and their spouses, which will benefit our military students. He is the right leader to expand our military program offerings and drive on-base relationships to expand our presence.” Prior to joining Brandman University, Woods served as senior policy advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness and as a senior advisor to the deputy under secretary of defense for military community and family policy. Previously, he had served as the director of Department of Defense (DOD) Educational Opportunities, as well as chief of DOD Continuing Education. Woods’ accomplishments while in those positions earned him the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service, which cited him for

his outstanding vision, dedication, leadership and commitment, which improved education opportunities for military personnel and their families worldwide. Specifically, his accomplishments included overseeing efforts to establish the first forwarddeployed education center in 40 years, resulting in graduations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also expanded coverage of the department’s tuition assistance program and oversaw a panel of government and academic leaders that developed standards for delivery of distance learning programs across all branches of service. “My goal is to help lead Brandman University in becoming the example for excellence in education for our nation’s service men and women,” said Woods. “Brandman University has a strong heritage in military education, as evidenced by it being named as a Military Friendly School by GI Jobs Magazine for two years running, as well as by Military.com. That legacy is combined with Brandman’s progressive approach to creating curriculum that best meets the needs of working adult students, including those serving our nation in uniform. Our military knowhow, combined with high-quality curriculum built around in-demand degree offerings, delivers a strong, visionary alternative to other militaryoriented institutions.” Woods’ appointment is Brandman University’s latest step to ensure its high level of service and programs for military students. The University, previously known as Chapman University College until 2009, actually originated with Chapman University’s effort to meet the education needs of military personnel when it established the Residence Education Center Program at El Toro Marine Air Station in Orange County, California, in 1958. The program soon expanded to other military facilities as well as community-based campuses. Earlier this year, Brandman University also announced with that David A. Janes, a retired rear admiral in the United States Navy, would assume leadership of the Brandman University Board of Regents. During his military service, Janes was appointed by the Secretary of Defense as the national chairman of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an agency whose mission is to gain and maintain support from all public and private employers for the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve. In addition, he serves as the chairman of the Department of Defense Advisory Board for Employer Relations.

AT THE MOVIES With Roger Ebert I MP

JONAH HEX Jonah Hex” is a Western set around the town of Stunk Crick, although that doesn’t entirely explain why the climactic scene involves an attack on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. Using my powers of logic, I deduce that the characters traveled there from Stunk Crick. The movie is not precise in its geography. Most of the location filming was in Louisiana, which is not named, perhaps because that might make it hard to explain its vast deserts and dusty frontier town. The thriller involves a man named Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin), who is bent on vengeance. During the Civil War, the evil Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich) strapped him to a cross and made him watch as a house containing his family was set afire. Then Turnbull branded Jonah’s face with a hot iron, causing difficulties with leaks when he tries to throw back a shot of whiskey. You can see why Jonah would want his revenge. To be sure, Turnbull mutters something about Jonah having previously murdered HIS family, meaning he isn’t

entirely without motive. Stunk Crick is your standard frontier town with a wide Main Street, a saloon and a room over the saloon occupied by Lilah, a sexy hooker. The presence of Lilah in the film is easily explained: She is played by Megan Fox. If you want a woman in an old western town, there are only three occupations open to her, hooking, schoolmarming and anyone called Ma. Lilah and Jonah are in love, for reasons unexplained. It certainly isn’t because of the quality of their conversation. The only hooker in a Western I’ve ever believed in was in “Lonesome Dove,” but I’ve seen “Lonesome Dove,” and “Jonah Hex” is no “Lonesome Dove.” It’s based on some DC Comics characters, which may explain the way the plot jumps around. We hear a lot about graphic novels, but this is more of a graphic anthology of strange occult ideas. Consider, for example, that Jonah was once so close to death that he wandered around on the Other Side and made valuable contacts there. He can

even talk to the dead, and one corpse revives long enough to tell him precisely where Quentin Turnbull can be found. In what is possibly a confused stab at allegory, Jonah finds himself trying to prevent Turnbull from blowing up the Capitol building with a terrorist super weapon. In scenes set in the Oval Office, the U.S. president is concerned about this threat by Turnbull, who is an embittered Confederate general, and decides that the wanted outlaw Hex is the only man who can prevent the plot from being carried out. A climactic battle scene takes place in the Potomac River between two ironclad ships. In U.S. history, you will recall, there was such a battle between the USS Monitor and the Confederate

ship Virginia. One of these ships looks like the Monitor, but I’m unclear. Anyway, Turnbull is onboard, directing the Weapon, which is a big cannon. He’s previously tested it by blowing up a Western town. Now he trains it on the Capitol, depicted in special effects that suggest the Capitol and the Washington Monument were the only two structures in Washington at that time, at least for purposes of being fired on. After Hex saves the day, he’s invited into the Oval Office, thanked and then presented with a big badge. What is this badge? The president tells Hex: “America needs a sheriff.” This provided the audience with a big laugh, which sounded like it might have been bottled up for a while.

AT THE MOVIES With Movie Maven - Jeri Jacquin I MP

KNIGHT AND DAY Opening this Friday from director James Mangold and 20th Century Fox is a dynamic duo gone crazy wrong with “Knight and Day”. This film tells the story of June (Cameron Diaz), a typical gal trying to get a flight home with her car parts in time for her sisters wedding. Enter Roy Miller (Tom Cruise), a charming and handsome man who keeps bumping into June while boarding a plane. What June doesn’t know yet is that Roy is a covert spy on a mission to protect a young Simon Feck (Paul Dano) who has created the world’s newest potential power source, the Zepher. Roy claims to be set up by the agency he works for and June gets tangled up in the globe trotting adventure. No matter how she tries to get back home to her normal life, Roy pops up and things have a way of getting out of hand. Once June realizes that Roy may be right, she finds she has the ability to hold her own against the bad guys. Roy’s buddy from the bureau Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard), it also looking for the Zepher and following them both. The come together to save the world – one bullet at a time. FINAL WORD: This is the film for Cruise. As the character Miller it gives

him a chance to be the action adventure hero and, at the same time be charming and funny – seriously, who doesn’t like that? Cruise once again reminds us why we do still love him. Now that his role as Les Grossman has renewed interest in Cruise we’ll see if it is enough to get them to the theatres this Friday. Diaz as June is a little scattered and I’m not sure if that’s Diaz herself or the character. The role allows her to be quirky funny with a little heroine action herself. Diaz has been keeping busy with her voice as the character of Fiona in the “Shrek” series but, with its ending, she is due is slated to take the role of Lenore Case in “The Green Hornet” with a release date of 2011. Dano is the scary smart Feck with an innocence that allows the viewer to understand why he needs protecting. Sarsgaard is fine in his role as Fitzgerald but, quite honestly, there is nothing threatening about him. He’s too calm to be a bad guy! This is an action comedy film that doesn’t take a lot of thought but its fun at the same time. There are car crashed, espionage, no one trusting anyone and a girl falling for the hero and all of it wrapped in a race. Other cast members include: Maggie

with a solid story. Although there are a few noticeable flaws, the film is a lot of fun and so the flaws are easily over looked. This is just simple a good night at the movies for adventure, action and comedy all rolled into one.

How do we write as to keep our material from being as derivative and repetitive as the movies? -- Aaron Lane Morris, Glasgow, Ky.

Q: Would you please refer me to a review you have written where you refer to a man as a “sexaholic slut” because he has engaged in the same sexual behavior as Samantha’s? No doubt you cannot refer me to any such review. I assume you get my point. -- Kathleen Dunham, Costa Mesa Calif. A: Damn! I received this too late to describe the Michael Douglas character in “Solitary Man” as a “sexaholic slut.” Of course the dictionary says “slut” is a word referring to a woman, but I am willing to bend the rules. Amazingly, according to the global word search on my computer, the SATC2 is the first time I have ever used the word “sexaholic.” Q: For two years now I have managed an eight-screen movie theater. For about six months I have been writing movie reviews for our local paper. My question is: How do we not become repetitive after seeing so many common themes repeated ad nauseam at the cineplex? Today with so many movies being derivative of prior material, sequels, remakes and reboots, how do we express to our readers the wonder of really finding something new? It’s obvious to anyone who has seen more than a dozen movies that the romantic comedic female lead is not going to marry the guy she is engaged to at the beginning of the film. A: The hard part is expressing “the wonder of finding something really new.” Many moviegoers actually want to see movies that are already familiar. That’s why genres are popular. If a critic informs them of a “masterpiece,” their first reaction is, “That doesn’t sound like anything I’d like to see.” Your challenge is to evoke for them the experience you had. As for the deadly predictability of some movies: In a way, that’s why I started the Little Movie Glossary, to have fun with cliches, archetypes, stereotypes and automatic plotting. But remember, your readers haven’t seen everything you have. The new “Karate Kid” faithfully follows the original plot, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t entertaining. Q: I read in one of your articles about the fact that movies are filmed with certain projector light requirements in order to correctly show the movie. You also suggested that some movie theaters might show the movies at a reduced lighting setting to save

money on their electric bill. I suspect my local theater is doing this on a regular basis. Some movies are so dark, you can barely tell what’s going on. My question is how can you know (a) what the setting is, and (b) what setting is being projected? Is a light meter relevant to this matter? -- Jim “Catfish” Chapman A: Of course, there can be dark scenes. If the whole movie looks noticeably dim, it’s probably not being projected at the correct level. As the AM has tirelessly explained: Some theater owners believe that if they turn down the power of the expensive projector bulb, the bulb’s life span will be lengthened. This is not true. Steve Kraus of Chicago’s Lake Street Screening Room tells me: “A technician with a light meter can read the reflected brightness of the screen with the projector running without film. It should be 16 foot-lamberts.” Ask your theater if they’ve checked lately. Q: A friend and I got in a discussion over whether it is racist to have race be a criteria while casting a role. My friend was of the opinion that the best actor should get the role. I felt that if the part was written for say a young African-American male, the audition pool should be limited to young African-American males. This discussion specifically focused on the movie “The Last Airbender,”

which is based on an American-made animated show called “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Two of the characters in the show were not white, yet their movie counterparts will be white. I felt that the movie casting choice was not true to the source material while my friend thought the casting choice (from a racial perspective) was irrelevant. Is casting white actors into non-white roles a form of racism/ whitewashing? Would the opposite also be racist? Or should the best actor, regardless of race or any other physical consideration, be chosen? -Colleen Stone, Woodbury, Minn. A: It was racist in the days when minority actors just plain couldn’t get work in anything but stereotyped roles. The situation has improved. If I’d been making “The Last Airbender,” I would probably have decided the story was so well known to my core audience that it would be a distraction to cast those roles with white actors. I’m guessing, but I suspect the American group most under-represented in modern Hollywood is young Asian-American males.

Cruise and Diaz – It’s a fun ride! things -- although no great pains are taken to make them look younger. And both are attractive in various stages of undress. (Several reviewers groused that Tom and Cameron were too old to be acting so silly. Well, maybe next time they’ll do “Macbeth.”) It was just fun. There’s plenty of serious, depressing stuff out there if that’s what you want. Tom, always the object of such, hmmm -- critical tomfoolery -- seems to be spoofing several aspects of his image. All great stars come to this sooner or later. Sometimes it’s creepy; sometimes it’s fun. Tom’s self-mockery is fun and charming to observe. He’s really quite an amusing guy. IT ALSO struck me that “Knight and Day” is one of the few movies Tom has done where his female co-star is a really big star herself. Cameron appeared

“MY MOM always said, ‘If it’s your job, you’ll get it,’ and even today I never look at other actresses and say, ‘I wish I had what they have.’ I love women. I root for women. The only women I don’t like are jealous, spiteful ones who stab other women in the back and do sh---y things.” That’s the adorable Cameron Diaz talking to Stephen Rebello in Playboy. In this Q&A, Cameron comes off just as she does onscreen -- open and funny, self-deprecating but self-confident, too. “I’m super-easy. I’m not complicated,” she asserts. At another point in the interview she says, “Whether other people consider my accomplishments to be successful or not doesn’t matter to me. I don’t give a f--- what other people think. I have my own standards I live by.” This healthy attitude will stand her in good stead now that her movie, “Knight and Day” with Tom Cruise just opened to so-so reviews. I am personally mystified at some of the harsher critiques. I went to see “Knight and Day” and had a totally fine, preposterous, suspend-disbelief time. I honestly don’t know what reviewers expect? The movie is derivative of lots of other comedy thrillers with the spunky/ hapless heroine alternately attracted to and afraid of the shooting, leaping, motorbike-riding, mysterious hunk who might or might not be the villain of the piece. They meet “cute” on a plane and before you can ask “does this make sense,” Tom is dragging Cameron all over the place, getting her into crazy situations, all the while assuring her that he is a good guy -- honest! (He warns her, in the plot device of so many similar movies, that the real bad guys will say they are “the FBI.”) So it’s not “North by Northwest” or “Charade “ ... what is these days? WHAT LIFTS “Knight and Day” to a fresh -- at least to me -- threshold, are the considerable charms of Mr. Cruise and Miss Diaz. First off, they sport two of the most irresistible grins in the biz -- between them they must have a thousand teeth! You can’t help but feel good when it’s so obvious both actors are having a hell of a good time. Cruise is a still-boyish 47 and Diaz is a vivacious 37. Neither appears inappropriately mature to be running around like mad

with Tom in the odd entry, “Vanilla Sky,” but that movie was a starring spotlight for Penelope Cruz, who was not a big star then. (Though she was Cruise’s main squeeze at the time.) Tom has had many legendary male co-stars -- Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, but it’s rare for him to have a traditional romantic pairing with an equally important female. (Demi Moore played a kind of severe character role in “A Few Good Men.” The real relationship -- not to mention the famous “You can’t handle the truth” scene was between Tom and Jack.) And of course, Tom and Brad Pitt were a sensationally sexy dysfunctional couple in “Interview with the Vampire.” Tom has shared screen time with the fabulous Vanessa Redgrave in one of the “Mission Impossible” movies and

The ‘80s – Must we do it again? “THE BIGGEST star in the music world right now worships at the altar of the late Warhol and early Madonna, and she will have the biggest tour of the summer precisely because everything about her is so disposable and phony. She is so eighties.” That’s Stephen March writing of Lady Gaga in the new issue of Esquire. The author offers a blistering two-page

essay -- “Why the Hell are we Back in the Eighties?” He writes, “The music was brittle. The clothes were ugly. The art was nasty. Sex was AIDS and drugs were crack.” March also notes: “In politics too, there’s an eighties craze, driven by both Barack Obama and the people who would see him fail. The president is as much a party to nostalgia as anyone -- throughout his campaign he repeatedly praised the man -- Ronald Reagan -- whose legacy he is currently dismantling ... when he is not posing as Reagan, Obama is claiming, through a thousand small gestures, that he is the reincarnation of Lincoln. “And the tea partiers claim they’re the only true inheritors of the revolutionary fathers when they’re really nihilists, against everything and for nothing.” SPEAKING OF Lady Gaga, if she is the Madonna-clone so many insist, then it is time for a little “re-invention” This is the word that just about became the dictionary definition of Madonna. It’s time to dress like a

human in public Gaga; the freak shtick is old already. Two years into her fame, Madonna had already tossed out the leggings and midriff tops and lacy socks. She presented a new image and sound. OK -- I managed to catch something called “The Much Music Awards” on Sunday night, though of course that was nothing compared to the emotional finale of “The Tudors.” Much Music is a show that airs in Canada and features a lot of Canadian talent I’ve never heard of. Well, even if they were American, it’s a very young crowd -- teens and tweens galore.

I stuck it out to see the performances of Justin Bieber, the latest in a decadeslong line of teen heartthrob singers -- remember Fabian, or the Cassidy Brothers? The Monkees? The nowfading Jonas Brothers? So Justin comes out in his baggy jacket and his cap. He’s 16 but looks 12. And this is good news. As soon as the throbs sprout hair, they’re cooked. I don’t know if he can really sing or dance, but the shrieking for him was impressive. And then Miley Cyrus closed the show with some kind of wild number titled “Can’t Tame Me,” that seemed a

cross between Marilyn Monroe’s “Heat Wave” and Dietrich’s “Hot Voodoo.” She’s only 17 so she was not as high camp as either legend. The Disney star of “Hannah Montana” will probably be criticized for “sexualizing” herself. But is this really so much different than a teen star of the ‘40s or ‘50s wearing low-cut evening gowns or posing for pin-up pictures? (I know you’ll say “yes!” But in the context of our changed times I wonder?) Oh, and I don’t know if Miley has any real talent. She hosted the awards show and was rather gauche. Her performing style is like everybody else’s. But, as with young Mr. Bieber, the shrieking was outstanding. And that is entertainment! Snooki, from MTV’s loutish “Jersey Shore” showed up onstage too. I hope this perpetually salon- or spray-tanned young woman saves her money. There will be no second acts for Snooki. AS TO the evening’s adult entertainment, I was totally satisfied with the end of “The Tudors.” What a bloody romp this has been. And to think, Showtime initially didn’t see it going more than a couple of seasons. I won’t give too much away for those who haven’t seen the finale yet -- there are surprises -- but King Henry, in the finally grayed, aged and infirm form of Jonathan Rhys Meyers, gets his just deserts. Well, of course he dies -- we all get that desert -- but he suffers a lot. Just as he made so many others suffer. He does not go peacefully into that good night. He passes as befits an ogre. I’ll say again as I have for the past five years that Emmy should be ashamed not to have honored this show -- it was a superior ongoing piece of work, and every actor, craftsman, designer, cameraman involved can take welldeserved bows. As for the tempestuous and sometimes troubled super-nova of “The Tudors,” Mr. Rhys Meyers, I wish him well wherever he is, and hope he’s back working soon. Talk about a face the camera loves! He is a hypnotic presence onscreen.

Katherine Jenkins Wows ”BEAUTY IS its own excuse for being,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. Well, Mr. Emerson’s dictum could apply appropriately to Welsh singing sensation Katherine Jenkins. Miss Jenkins has a ravishing voice (and a huge fan base in Europe.) But she is also -- physically ravishing; so gorgeous that her talent seems almost secondary to those experiencing her for the first time. Katherine was supposed to hit Manhattan a while back to promote her album, “Believe.” But she was stopped by volcano ash disrupting international flights. The volcano has calmed down and Katherine landed in NYC the other night. She was feted at the spacious Upper East Side apartment of PR expert Liz Rosenberg. LIZ LEFT her quarter-century gig at Warner Bros. Records several months ago. Now she is Liz Rosenberg Media, and judging by the turnout for Jenkins, Liz has not lost her magic touch -- she has taken her power with her, a loss to Warner Bros. Why, it was only composer/ singer/producer/arranger/actor David Foster. (David was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last night in NYC.) After it was all over, the guests tumbled out of Liz’s fantasy-like apartment bedazzled and buzzed. Great food, good liquor, fabulous and amusing decor, a hot blonde singing Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the hostess herself in a glam flowing gown and ... little furry cat ears perched upon her shiny blonde coif. Showbiz can still be fun, sometimes. QUOTE: “We do live in a cynical world. It’s easy to be cynical. Making the choice not to be cynical is important.” That’s mega-star Tom Cruise in the current Esquire magazine -- the “How to Be a Man” issue. Many things have been said of Tom, but it is true I’ve never heard him referred to as cynical. Tom, on the cover with eight pages inside, was interviewed by Cal Fussman and photographed by Nigel Parry and looks as hot as his old “Risky Business” days. (One of Tom’s hands rests provocatively near his crotch -- you know, that guy thing they all do.) He certainly doesn’t appear to be a man just three years shy of 50 -- if you saw him dancing with Jennifer Lopez at the MTV Movie Awards you know he’s geared up to extend his career indefinitely. Tom’s new movie with Cameron Diaz, “Knight and Day” opens on June 25. SPEAKING OF Tom, his wife, Katie Holmes, made quite an impression at

the Tony Awards, towering over Daniel Radcliffe. I wonder who thought that pairing was a good idea? Daniel looked miserable. I’ve seen short guy/tall gal pairing work out well, when there’s humor involved -- Michael J. Fox was the master of this sort of thing. (Those with a real knowledge of Hollywood history will recall Mickey Rooney and Jayne Mansfield at the 1961 Golden Globe Awards.) Also, Daniel’s ill-fitting trousers, bunched at the ankles didn’t help. He should have come out with the petite Kristin Chenoweth. But, maybe we are reading too much into Daniel’s unhappy face. It might not have had anything to do with the gazelle-like Mrs. Cruise. Filming on the last “Harry Potter” movie just ended and Mr. Radcliffe admits he and the entire cast were “devastated” to see it end. So maybe he is still feeling the pain? IN HER continued efforts to stay relevant (and promote her very successful new fragrance, “Violet Eyes”) Elizabeth Taylor contributed to an Us magazine feature, “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me.” Well, we who know our Liz knew most of these things, but I liked two revelations in particular: “I’m mad for ‘Law & Order’ and have seen every single episode. My children and Mariska Hargitay -- a dazzling actress -- played together as kids.” And this: “My family and people with HIV/AIDS are my life.” Elizabeth has said previously that everything she went through, all the invasions of her privacy, all the paparazzi stalking, came to be worth it, when she finally decided to do something worthwhile with her, “absurd fame.”

“Fiction reveals the truth that reality obscures,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. THEY’RE SHOOTING a movie in Australia this month based on the screenplay “The Killer Elite” and it will star Clive Owen, Jason Statham and Oscar winner Robert De Niro. This is based on a 1991 book by a 66-year-old explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes (not to be confused with the actor Ralph Fiennes). This book was titled “The Feather Men” and it deals with four soldiers, including two members of Britain’s Special Forces and how these men were murdered over a 17-year period by a hit squad hired by a wealthy Arab sheik. The fifth man, Sir Ranulph, escaped death thanks to a murky group of vigilantes called, of course, “the feather men.” Officialdom disapproved of Sir. Ranulph’s book, calling it “full of events that never took place.” They feel it smears the reputation of the Special Forces and was exploitive “for commercial gain.” Oh, puh-leeze, sounds like a whopping good yarn and will make a whopping good movie. REGARDING a delightful story I relayed recently about the great actress Marian Seldes and her silent appearance at the Tony Awards when she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award: Marian’s friend, David Williams, advises us that he is not the “former” manager of Marian’s career but still working with her. And he wants us to know that this remarkable woman has a movie coming out in July titled “The Extra Man.” In this, Ms. Seldes emotes with Kevin Kline, Katie Holmes, Paul Dano and John C. Reilly. “THE MAYOR” of Harbour Island in the Bahamas is woefully missed in this vacation paradise. The late Wallace Tutt was found dead lying in some bushes near the beautiful pink sand beach that adorns his exclusive Harbour Island home. His death was a shock to one and all for he was the mover par excellence in the Exuma Islands as a contractor and manager. He had an interest in Harbour Island’s famous Rock House inn and restaurant. I haven’t learned yet how the young and handsome Mr. Tutt died but he

I WAS amused the other day when Page Six of the N.Y. Post reported that none other than the great Groucho Marx had tried to put the kibosh on the wedding of the dancing Arthur Murray’s daughter, Jane, to Dr. Henry Heimlich back in 1951. The story made Groucho sound sinister. But there’s his charming note itself in the pages of the new book by Jane Murray Heimlich titled “Out of Step.” And it was obviously just Groucho paying Jane a compliment by pretending he had been saving her for himself. Jane’s story is a tango of memories of her famous parents who became TV stars from teaching America how to dance back in the ‘50s. And it is the intelligent metamorphosis of a girl who felt rejected by daddy’s coldness, rejected by mummy’s attempted suicide and later found she had escaped their “celebrity” only to marry a handsome doctor, who became famous himself -- overnight. (Jane was always trying to “find” herself and she tells her own funny story of going to a party in Tennessee where her doctor husband was being honored for devising the Heimlich maneuver. The hostess took Jane by the hand and began introducing her around “And here is Mrs. Maneuver!” This is an unusual memoir recalling the early days of television, life at El Morocco and The Stork and the old Hollywood, the charms and alarms of bicoastal life and finally, Jane’s escape into the discovery of her own field -alternative medicine. ATTENTION, FANS of real music! On Aug. 2, JSP Records in London will release “Judy Garland -- Lost Tracks: 1929-1959” This four-CD box set presents some of young Judy’s very first recordings in 1935, for Decca. But, wait -- there’s more. The collection runs 100 -- yes -- 100 numbers strong, including 55 performances that have never before been released, many of these from Judy’s prolific, but not well-known radio work throughout the ‘40s and ‘50s. On radio, Judy performed many songs that she’d never sing again -- classics such as “Speak Low,” “All the Things You Are,” “Can’t Helping Lovin’ That Man of Mine.” (Sung during the era when her voice was at its most pristine.) AT THE MOVIES with Roger Ebert I MP

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse The price for surrendering your virginity is so high in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” that even Edward Cullen, the proposed tool of surrender, balks at it. Like him, you would become one of the undead. This is a price that Bella Swan, the virtuous heroine, must be willing to pay. Apparently when you marry a vampire, even such a well-behaved one as Edward, he’s required to bite you. This romantic dilemma is developed in “Eclipse,” the third installment in this inexhaustible series, by adding a complication that has been building ever since the first. Jacob Black, the shape-shifting werewolf, is also in love with Bella (Kristen Stewart), and she perhaps with him. Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his tribe are hotblooded and never wear shirts, inspiring little coos and ripples of delight in the audience. Here is a fantasy to outsteam any romance novel: A sweet young girl is forced to choose between two improbably tall, dark and handsome men who brood and smolder and yearn for her. Nothing is perfect. There is a problem. The flame-tressed vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) has been active in Seattle initiating new vampires, or Newbies, who in their

youth are ravenous for blood and would have superhuman strength, if they were human. Victoria wants to destroy Bella in revenge for the murder of her boyfriend, James. Edward and Jacob both vow to protect the girl they love, and their fellow vampires and werewolves of course are prepared to fight to the death in this cause. This is true buddy love. The movie contains violence and death, but not really very much. For most of its languorous running time, it listens to conversations between Bella and Edward, Bella and Jacob, Edward and Jacob, and Edward and Bella and Jacob. This would play better if any of them were clever conversationalists, but their ideas are limited to simplistic renderings of their desires. To be sure, there is a valedictory address, reminding us that these kids have skipped school for three movies now. And Edward has a noble speech when he tells Bella he doesn’t want to have sex with her until after they’re married. This is self-denial indeed for a 109-year-old vampire, who adds a piquant flavor to the category “confirmed bachelor.” Of Taylor Lautner’s musculature, and particularly his abs, much has been written. Yes, he has a great build, but I remind you that an abdominal six-pack

must be five seconds’ work for a shapeshifter. More impressive is the ability of both Edward and Jacob to regard Bella with penetrating gazes from ‘neath really heavy eyebrows. When my eyebrows get like Edward’s, the barber trims them and never even asks me first. There is a problem with the special

effects. Many of the mountain ranges, which disappear into the far distance as increasingly pale peaks, look suspiciously like landscapes painted by that guy on TV who shows you how to paint stuff like that. The mountain forests and lakes are so pristine we should see Lewis and Clark just arriving. And the werewolves are inexplicable. They look snarly enough, have vicious fangs and are larger than healthy ponies, but when they fall upon Newbies, they never quite seem to get the job done. One werewolf is nearly squeezed to death, and another, whose identity I will conceal, hears “he has broken bones on one whole side.” Luckily, repairing the damage is only a night’s work for Dr. Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli). The problem with the effects is that the wolves don’t seem to have physical weight and presence. Much leads up to a scene in a tent on a mountaintop in the midst of a 15 howling blizzard, when Bella’s teeth Escondido start chattering. Obviously a job for the hot-blooded Jacob and not the cold-blooded Edward, and as Jacob embraces and warms her, he and Encinitas Edward have a cloying cringe fest in which Edward admits that if Jacob were not a werewolf, he would probably like him, and then Jacob admits that Poway if Edward were not a vampire -- well, no, no, he couldn’t. Come on, big guy. The two of you are making eye contact. 1 Miramar Edward’s been a confirmed bachelor for Marine Base Santee 805 109 years. Get in the brokeback spirit. 2 The audience watched this film with El Cajon rapt attention. They obviously had a deep 3 understanding of the story, which is just 8 as well, because anyone not intimately Lemon Grove San Diego familiar with the earlier installments 6 could not make head or tails of the 32nd Street opening scenes. The “Twilight” movies Naval Base are chaste eroticism to fuel adolescent 4 dreams, and are really about Bella being 5 attracted and titillated and aroused and Chula Vista tempted up to the ... very ... Headlines report “Queen’s Spending Under Scrutiny” as the Daily Telegraph reports that from now on the royal household has to open its books for taxpayer’s inspection. It costs about $21 million annually to enable Elizabeth II to carry out her official duties. While everyone in Britain will have to scrape, save, cut and be taxed under the new exigencies, the queen must also pay salaries for her 1,200-person staff, plus supporting garden parties, receptions and state dinners. The queen and her consort, the Duke of Edinburgh, are the only members of the royals to receive an annual parliamentary allowance. The queen pays personally for the upkeep of Andrew, the Duke of York, the two princes, William and Harry, Edward the Earl of Wessex and the princess royal. Charles, the Prince of Wales, meets his own costs through income from the Duchy of Cornwall. ONE OF my pets, actor Frank Langella, came out to the recent screening of Oliver Stone’s documentary, “South of the Border” and it’s no wonder. He reports that Miss Walters is doing real fine since her heart valve operation and “she seems to be going out every night.” ROLLING STONE is doubtless happy over their big scoop via reporter Michael Hastings about the musings and firing of General Stanley McChrystal. But the magazine was busy touting Lady Gaga when they went to press

and they buried the most sensational news story of the decade way down on the magazine cover under Gaga’s considerable naked behind. They slugged it in tiny type as “Obama’s General: Why He’s Losing the War.” Just another case of editors not realizing what a gem they had on their hands. As for all the naysayers carping that the magazine and reporter Hastings should not have revealed McChrystal and his merry men dissing the president -- I ask, are they kidding? No real news reporter would have buried this great story for any reason under the sun. The death of American icon Edith Shain on June 20 in L.A. marked, I suppose, the end of her effort to get Congress to pass an official day honoring the men and women of the Great Depression and World War II. Edith said they saved western civilization and rebuilt the post-war world.

Draw Three in Vegas Aria

“I’ll draw three” is a common phrase in poker. The World Series of Poker Academy attracted me to Las Vegas; that was draw #1. Draw #2 was the fabulous CityCenter and its crown jewel, ARIA. Draw #3 was Cirque du Soleil’s Viva ELVIS. I attended the World Series of Poker Academy to sharpen my hold ‘em skills. The two-day immersion course was led by world famous poker pro Annie Duke. It was doubly fun for me since I have, on occasion, played cards with her dad, author Richard Lederer. Annie’s passion for the game is unmistakable and her teaching style is first-rate. The jampacked sessions focused on winning strategies for cash games (as opposed to tournament play). The curriculum included betting recommendations, game theory, pot odds and reading your opponent. One-on-one instruction during live table play was provided by pros Bernard Lee, Tom Schneider, Shawn Rice and Jim Shipley along with Annie Duke. It was entertaining and, more importantly, it did improve

my game. How do I know? I recently finished second in a travel writers’ tournament and made the final table at a small buy-in game in Reno at the Atlantis. Neither would have happened

When I first entered my room, the curtains opened automatically as if to welcome me. Bedside, there is a small console that controls the lights, curtains, temperature, sleep timer, TV and radio, plus a feature allowing me to check out without going to the lobby. It provided an improbable cocoon of comfort within a 4,000 room, 61 story hotel with a 150,000 square foot casino. After a busy day at “school,” I made my way to the Spa at ARIA. The 81,500 square foot facility features separate men’s and women’s areas that include

The Declaration of Independence At A Glance The Declaration of Independence will always stand as the most important document in pursuit of freedom. This document stands as the hallmark of a people’s struggle to assert and win their independence against tyranny and unlawful acts. Historical experts continue to study the wording, structure and history of this document even today. While every American should be familiar with the contents of this most important document, many are not. Here is a brief outline of its many important points or The Declaration of Independence at a glance1.The opening paragraph explains why the document is written. It asserts the need that the colonies have to dissolve their bonds with Great Britain and assume the rights and privileges that they feel entitled to. The writers of the document make it clear they feel that these rights are both inherent in nature and given from God. The document then goes on to state that they will give the reasons for this needed separation. 2.This second is the largest paragraph in The Declaration of Independence. This paragraph gives the basis of the Declaration. The signers state first that they hold as their most important truth that all men are created equal (though this did not include black men or women). They also state that the rights they hold as most important they feel come from the Creator and include that well-known phrase“Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness�”. They then state that because of these rights should any people find themselves subject to an unjust form of government than it is there right to alter or abolish it and “to institute new Government�?. Their objective becomes plain when they clearly state that “the history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States�?. They then list the offenses and crimes that they feel they have suffered. 3.The body of the Declaration of Independence then lists the following reasons the Colonies are severing ties with Great Britain•Refusal to assent to laws for the common good. •Forbidding the passing of laws of importance and neglect of recorded laws •Refusal to pass laws for the accommodation of large groups of people unless they relinquish the right of representation in the legislature. •Calling together legislative bodies at places that were deemed unusual, uncomfortable, and at a far distance from the depository of their public records. This was done for the purpose of exhausting legislatures into compliance with the king’s wants. •Dissolving Representative Houses when they did not agree with the king. •Refusal to reestablish legislative bodies after dissolving. •Refusal to aid in settling other lands and easing immigration requirements. •Refusal to support local judiciary powers. •Setting up judges that only support the king’s wishes •Allowing soldiers of Great Britain to be able to commandeer home and food from American citizens at will. •Keeping military stationed in the colonies at all times. •For allowing trials and laws to be in effect in England that directly affected the American people. •For allowing soldiers free reign to act at will with no threat of punishment. •For cutting off trade with all parts of the world. •Taxation without representation. •Depriving Americans many times of having a trial with a jury. •For bringing Americans back to England for trial many times without cause. •For allowing plunder on both sea and land. •For taking captive many of the American people and forcing them to serve as captives in the Royal Navy. •Exciting domestic insurrections among Americans and Native American Indians. •For not allowing redress of wrongs despite repeated petitions. 4.This paragraph serves as a warning to Great Britain that this document must be taken seriously and that the people of the colonies now regard them as enemies. 5.This paragraph is simply a concluding declaration that this document will serve as a record of wrongs and the desire of the people to completely separate from Great Britain. It also expresses the hope that one day reconciliation will become possible. 6.The signers are listed.
