EXPLAINING EVIL Some will blame TV and video game violence. Depictions of murder

rying to explain an evil act like the one that killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., is on a par with explaining how the universe was formed. The natural human reaction after extending sympathy and prayers for the victims and their families is to ask what actions might have been taken to prevent the massacre. More gun laws? Connecticut already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. Those laws did not prevent a man with evil intent from carrying out his heinous act.

Such explanations are too easy. Would armed guards at Sandy Hook have helped? Possibly, but do we want guards at every elementary school, patrolling not only the halls, but play-

headed. What about locked doors? Sandy Hook’s doors were reportedly secured, but the shooter still managed to somehow gain access. As much as humans have tried for millennia to prevent evil acts, we have not succeeded. In the modern era, Woodrow Wilson believed his League

of Nations would usher in peace on Earth, if not goodwill to men. The United Nations followed that aborted experiment. The U.N. has been equally unsuccessful in preventing the slaughter of innocents and other evil acts. Political leaders not usually identified with spiritual concepts are making use of the word “evil’ in accurately describing what happened in Newtown. We hear calls for prayers from politicians committed to the separation of church and state. Whether it is Columbine, Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora, Ft. Hood, Oklahoma City or the 9/11 terrorist attacks, evil seems to have gained a foothold in America. Not every parent with a child in public school has the option of homeschooling, but that is something they might want to consider if they want to create a completely safe environment. Even private schools can’t offer full protection from a deranged mind hellbent on carnage. More information about the killer will surface in the days to come, but even if we learn he was psychotic and off his medication, that will not satisfy our communal anger or anguish. It will not explain evil. It will not explain why 26 innocent lives were lost. The way to deal with evil is to first acknowledge that it exists and that we all possess the potential for it. We don’t become evil by what we do, but because of who we are. We are human beings, not God. We are not “basically good,” as some claim, we are imperfect and fall far short of any true standard of perfection. Evil is a “pre-existing condition.” In some it is controlled by an inner compass, or by laws and cultural constraints. When it is not, we get Sandy Hook and tragedies like it. We get what we do not understand and cannot begin to fathom. There may be no greater expression of evil than the murder of children in their classrooms. In calling for prayers, officials have taken an important first step in combating evil, but a larger question should be asked. Perhaps theologians, pastors, priests and rabbis are the ones to ask it, but permit me a suggestion. If there is a source of evil, is there also a source of good? And if there is, has that source for good been offended by all of the accumulated evil we are piling up, affording it an upper hand? As a friend of mine says, “Not a sermon, just a thought.”

From Our Readers

Reader Offended by Publisher’s Hypothesis Mr. Richard Matz, The beginnings of one of history’s “horrific” tragedies began when European settlers landed in the New World in the 16th century. Indentured servitude wasn’t successful and the indigenous peoples of the New World often died of small pox and other diseases Europeans carried and to which they did not build an immunity. Trade between Africans and Europeans expanded in Africa about this time. In exchange for European goods, Africans did not intentionally sell off their own people. It was an exchange of labor for goods. Europeans deliberately took advantage of this situation, instigating conflicts between warring tribes. It was then that the wealthy merchants exploited Africans through brutality and racism! Your people built the slave ships and made a cottage industry out of human suffering, not us! Get your facts straight! — From Al Simmons

your statement offensive. Your reference of “Your People” is a very feeble attempt to place blame for slavery on today’s Americans. You and people like you continue to try to divide Richard Matz, our country! Why do Publisher you continue to segregate us by using the term “African Americans?” You are either an American or from another country. I am of German descent but when asked, I’ve never referred to myself as German American. If anyone states they are African American, Mexican American, German American, I feel that it’s a slap in the face of all Americans. Get it straight… when our military men and women die for their country, we should never describe these heroes as anything but Americans! — Richard Matz

the starting blocks, Pistorius made history, becoming the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics. Did prosthetics give Pistorius an advantage over able-bodied athletes? We may never know for sure. But after he finished second in his heat, there was no doubting his grit and sheer athleticism. No matter that he finished last in his semifinal heat the next evening. Athletes like Pistorius and Sarah Attar, the first Saudi Arabian woman to run in the Olympics — who finished last in her 800-m heat — created lasting Olympic memories by breaking down barriers.

Think small. That’s what more of today’s car buyers are doing. But it’s not just new Volkswagens they’re buying. After several years of high gas prices and a sluggish economy, it seems U.S. consumers have finally taken to the idea of buying small, eco-friendly, fuel-efficient vehicles across the board. About half of all new cars sold in the U.S. now have smaller four-cylinder engines. Meanwhile, federal fuel-efficiency standards — which will double the m.p.g. standards for cars and light trucks by 2025 — will continue putting pressure on manufacturers to produce vehicles with smaller engines and better fuel economy. Consumers seem to be on board at a time when the industry as a whole has recovered after the government bailouts. Sales were up 13% in September from a year ago and are currently at their highest point since February 2008.

to grow. But in 2012 that changed definitively. Thanks in part to new sources of shale oil in North Dakota and Texas—as well as conservation efforts to reduce oil consumption—the U.S. has enjoyed a major domestic oil boom. By November the country was producing 6.68 million barrels of oil a day, the highest level in 18 years— enough to make it a net exporter of petroleum products. Grand Phelps Finale

By Alice Park When you’re the greatest Olympian of all time, it’s a challenge to find new ways to top yourself. After setting a record in gold-medal wins in Beijing, Michael Phelps wanted to make a new mark in London: the most decorated Olympian ever. And even with an uncharacteristic fourth-place finish in his first race, Phelps ended up accomplishing just that, closing out his career with his 18th gold medal (and 22nd medal overall) in the men’s 4-by-100-m medley relay. For eight years, both diehard fans and those new to the sport have been lured to the pool to satisfy their “will he or won’t he” curiosity, and they were rewarded by witnessing history. FINA, the international swimming federation, recognized Phelps’ achievements with a first-ever trophy to commemorate his unique status in both the sport and the Olympic movement. “I’ve been able to do everything I wanted,” said Phelps, who retired in London, of his history-making career. And now legions of new swimming fans can’t help but ask, What will we do in Rio? Special thanks to: time.com

the BAD The Secret Service and its Prostitutes

By Erin Skarda What happened in Cartagena didn’t stay in Cartagena. A dozen Secret Service agents who were tasked with securing the area before President Obama’s arrival for the Summit of the Americas were busted for bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms after a night of binge-drinking in the Colombian city. The April 11 incident brought attention to the Secret Service’s propensity for partying on overseas government trips — they don’t call it the “secret circus” for nothing — and raised questions about the President’s security. The scandal came to light when one of the agents refused to pay his escort — later identified as 24-year-old Dania Suarez —

The Drug War in Mexico Continues

By Nate Rawlings When Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney squared off to debate foreign policy on Oct. 22, the only mention of Latin America was when Romney called the region a “huge opportunity” for the United States. There was no mention of the estimated 60,000 people who have died in drug-related violence in Mexico in the past six years, double the number believed to have been killed in Syria’s civil war. But just as the presidential candidates didn’t want to discuss Mexico’s drug war, is seems Americans don’t want to read about it either. In July, Mexico’s new president Enrique Peña Nieto hinted at shifts in the country’s strategy away from large drug busts to focus more on protecting ordinary citizens from violence and kidnapping by cartels. As Nieto begins his first full year of a six-year term, it will be important to see whether this new approach works — and whether Americans will start paying attention. the full amount for her services. Following the incident, 11 agents were expelled from Colombia and placed on administrative leave, and eight of those agents were fired. Four of the

former agents later argued that their behavior wasn’t “out of the ordinary” and didn’t warrant dismissal.

Events that were truly bad in 2012

The General’s Mistress: David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell

By Erin Skarda Just a few days after Barack Obama was re-elected as President of the United States, General David Petraeus — the highly respected director of the CIA and former commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan — announced his resignation, citing an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. But that’s where the story begins. Within days, a half-dozen other characters emerged: a Tampa socialite and her identical twin, a dogged FBI agent and another high-ranking general are all being investigated for breaches of security. Meanwhile, members of Congress asked why they were the last to know of the scandal, and conspiracy theorists questioned the timing of the general’s resignation, as it occurred just before he was slated to testify before Congress on the Benghazi consulate attack (the general testified a week later).

Zombie Bath Salts

8 January 1, 2013 THE MILITARY PRESS

By Nate Rawlings The initial incident was bizarre enough. In May, Miami police shot and killed 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, whom they found lying naked under a highway overpass eating the face off a homeless man. Police later said that Eugene was likely high on “bath salts”, a designer drug similar to amphetamines. But then, things got really weird. A couple of weeks later, another Miami homeless man, reportedly high on bath salts and Four Loko, tried to bite a police officer’s hand. An article in GQ investigating the origins of bath salts asked, “more importantly, will this cause the Zombie Apocalypse?”and Buzzfeed proclaimed, “The Zombie Apocalypse Continues” after yet another cannibalistic attack in Louisiana. Even the Centers for Disease Control was compelled to weigh in, advising worried

Americans that it knew of no “virus or condition that would reanimate the dead (or one that would present zombielike symptoms).” Thankfully, the flesh-eating incidents turned out to be less a trend and more a string of violent outbursts. Bath salts dropped out of the public eye, and the number of reported incidents thinned. However, if people haven’t gotten their fill of zombie news, they can always catch an episode of The Walki.

Lance Armstrong Is Stripped of His Titles

By Erin Skarda Talk about a fall from grace. After years of denying that he had any part in the doping scandal that rocked the sport of cycling, Lance Armstrong finally succumbed to the overwhelming evidence gathered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. In October, the USADA published a 1,000-page report that implicated Armstrong for not only using performance-enhancing

LOVE Your Face LOVE Your Body LOVE Your Life drugs but also for helping run “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen” on his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams. Armstrong’s sponsors, including Nike and Anheuser-Busch, dropped him, and the cyclist was forced to resign as chairman of the Livestrong Foundation before severing all ties with the cancer-fighting foundation in November. While Armstrong still hasn’t publicly discussed the USADA report, it appears the fight may have gone out of him. “The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today — finished with this nonsense,” he stated in August. But the question is whether the legal system is finished with him. According to TIME’s Sean Gregory, perjury charges could be next for the former hero.

the ugly

Events that were truly ugly in 2012

Penn State

By Erin Skarda The Penn State sex-abuse saga continued to unravel in 2012, with more victims, resignations and sordid details after more than a year of investigations. In October, Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach who was charged with sexually assaulting at least 10 underage boys, was found guilty on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse and was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison.

In July, former FBI director Louis Freeh released an in-depth report on

the scandal and concluded that top administrators not only knew about Sandusky’s indiscretions but also attempted to conceal them, thereby putting the welfare of many children at risk. Shortly after the report was released, the NCAA imposed severe penalties on the football program, including a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban and a void on all victories from 1998 to 2011. Meanwhile, three top-ranking officials who were forced to resign — ex-president Gra-

ham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz — now face charges including perjury, obstruction, conspiracy, endangering the welfare of children and failing to report suspected abuse (their trials are set for January 2013). As if it couldn’t get any worse, civil lawsuits against Sandusky and Penn State are slowing rolling in.

Directly after the incident, Holmes, age 24, is arrested in a parking lot behind the theater.

Commentary By Cal Thomas

B

At a Christmas party they give annually for the “bar girls,” more than 200 prostitutes show up to play games like musical chairs and to hear a message from a former prostitute who tells her story of redemption, offering them a new life if they will only trust God. A few respond. One is called “Nim,” not her real name. Nim says she was abandoned by her mother and later sold by an opportunistic “auntie” to a couple who needed her to care for their aging parents. Nim says her work proved unsatisfactory and she was sold again to a bar where she was forced into prostitution. When the Thompsons rescued her they took her to a doctor who estimated her age at 11 or 12. She had no formal schooling, but they tutored her and she is now in a regular school. Nim recently received a “character pin” from the oldest daughter of Thailand’s king in recognition of her changed life and academic success. The rescued girls live in housing run by the Thompsons. They receive an allowance that partially compensates them for lost earnings. Many send portions of their allowances to family, which they used to do with their income from prostitution. The Thompsons are doing their small part, though the numbers seem overwhelming at times. Think of these girls as someone’s daughter or granddaughter and even though some of those relatives may have sold them, the message of love and self-worth sometimes breaks through, even in the red light districts of Bangkok.

One Night in BANGKOK

ANGKOK Most of us can read about sex trafficking with a sense of detachment. It is only when we see its results up close that we are forced to confront the full extent of its horror. Nana Plaza is one of several “red light” districts in Bangkok. It is less than two blocks from my upscale hotel, but worlds away from it, a distance, you could say, separating Heaven from Hell. Girls -- and that’s what many of them are -- wear almost nothing. They are there to please. My guide points out a three-story structure. “The higher you go,” he says, “the raunchier it gets.” It looks raunchy enough on the ground floor. In the song “One Night in Bangkok,” a line describes my feeling: “I can feel the devil walking next to me.” Prostitution has been illegal in Thailand since 1960, but the Thailand Government Public Health Department estimates there are 75,000 prostitutes in the country. Some nongovernment organizations put the figure much higher. “Sexual tourists” come here, their visits set up by travel agents, as if they were booking people for a cruise or a trip to the beach. The newspapers constantly rail against corrupt officials who tolerate the sex trade and turn a blind eye to exploited women.

Into this den of iniquity have come Bonita and Roy Thompson, two Christian missionaries. Eight years ago they gave up careers as California educators to come to a place where they make less money and receive little notice. Their payment comes in the lives of those girls they are able to save from a life of prostitution. Their ministry is called Home of New Beginnings (www.homeofnewbeginnings.com/ home.htm.)

HOMES FOR HEROES

Discounts on Closing Costs and More By Karen Jowers MilitaryTimes.com If you’re buying or selling a home, check out a program called Homes for Heroes, which offers discounts on real estate agent commissions, home inspections, and lender and closing fees. The program, which started in Minnesota after Sept. 11, 2001, is available to military personnel, firefighters, public safety officers, teachers and health care workers. Some 600 companies — agents and lenders — are affiliated with the program across 44 states, said Sandy Carlson, a director of affiliates for Homes for Heroes. More than 4,000 people logged on last year to request a referral to a local affiliate. All agents in the program offer at least a 25 percent discount on their gross commissions. For example, if the real estate agent makes a 3 percent commission for selling a $200,000 house, that’s $6,000. The discount would be $1,500, applied as a credit at closing. Beyond that, agents put together their own local programs with home inspection companies and title companies to offer savings that go beyond real estate agent and lender, Carlson said. “We don’t saturate a market, and we’re very careful about the people we bring on board,” Carlson said. Many of the affiliates are veterans or have worked in the other fields eligible for the program. Army Sgt. Chad Yancey is buying a house in Stafford, Va., through Homes for Heroes affiliate Reality Realty Professionals, owned by former Marine Gunnery Sgt. Samuel Cachola. “If it weren’t for Sam Cachola, I

probably wouldn’t be able to buy a house,” said Yancey, who is being medically retired by the Army. “We were living in on-post housing and had just over two months to do this.” It’s more than the discounts, Yancey said. “His whole team went to work for me, explained how the process worked and helped me get my credit organized and fixed.” Cachola said his first goal is to educate the service member on issues related to buying a house. “We sit down with them and make sure it makes sense to buy a house,” Cachola said. He’s seen the effect on service members who bought houses, received orders to move and faced big financial losses because of the downturn in the market. Cachola gives an additional 5 percent discount on his commission — for a total of 30 percent — to troops who have received an award for heroism. Everyone should use due diligence in choosing their agents and lenders, and this is another tool that can help point you to companies that want to work with, and give back to, service members. To contact an affiliate, go to www. homesforheroes.com, click on “Sign up for Hero Savings,” answer the questions and an affiliate will contact you within 24 hours. If you don’t hear from someone within that time, call 866443-7637. (Editor’s note: Avanti Homes, advertising on this page, is a proud affiliate of the Homes For Heroes program. Call them if you have any questions or are interested in participating.)

I strategically wait for Walgreens or CVS to advertise my favorite shade of L’Oreal on sale and then piggyback it with a two dollar coupon from the Sunday paper. Bam. Health & Beauty Former Navy Surgeon Gives Back Dr. Maurice Sherman served 10 years as a Navy doctor and today is well known throughout Southern California as chief surgeon at the Del Mar Cosmetic Medical Center. Military Press caught up with Dr. Sherman to learn more about his work with military personnel – both then and now. MP: No doubt you’ve handled many interesting military cases given your years of experience and connections. Dr. Sherman: Well we see many active military patients here at our Center. But it doesn’t seem that long ago I was active military myself. I’ll never forget a case while stationed at Pendleton (1978-81) serving as a staff surgeon. One of our officer’s wives - also pregnant at the time, developed a rare cancer of the larynx (voice box) which was cutting off her airway. Immediately after her baby was delivered, she recorded her voice for posterity. Then we had to remove her voice box to save her life, which was followed by radiation treatment causing additional complications. I managed her care for an additional two years after that. MP: You’re well known for your charitable work, including the National Domestic Violence Project and now we’re hearing of a new charitable program in the development stages for active military. Tell us about those. Dr. Sherman: It’s a sad statistic, but more than 5 million are affected by domestic violence annually and more than a million of those require medical attention. In this particular program, victims of domestic violence are referred to myself and other members of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for surgical services to repair disfigurements cause by these traumatic domestic events. I’m also excited to be on a new organizing committee with some of my colleagues from the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (CACS). We’re in the planning stages for a new program called Military Outreach with a goal to provide active duty military and/ or their immediate family members the opportunity to receive certain cosmetic surgery procedures on a goodwill basis. Our panel would discuss those applying with a demonstrated need and we would move forward from there. Our goal would be to absorb the costs of professional services (doctor and anesthesiologist fees and even implants if necessary). Only facility charges would be incurred. If any of your readers may know of a candidate, they should contact me at the Del Mar Cosmetic Center. MP: In addition to charitable services, your Cosmetic Center offers other military offers. Dr Sherman: Yes, we’re offering a 25% discount off for our active military and special pricing for military families. These discounts are

illustrated on our website at www. DrSherman.com. Most of the time, requests are for body contouring procedures such as liposuction, because they need to fit certain standards. For female active-duty military people we offer body contouring in the sense of tummy tucks after children, or perhaps breast enlargement procedures. And we have different types of facial plastic procedures also, such as rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery to, let’s say change the appearance of a nose that’s been bothersome for many, many years or is causing breathing problems. In addition, we offer some of the latest innovations in non-surgical treatment. So, whatever our military people are interested in, we’re going to try and provide them with the most modern and up-to-date answers. MP: Folks want help dealing with military standard requirements? Dr. Sherman: Absolutely. When I was in the military, we always had to deal with that and I don’t think too much has changed. If anything, it’s gotten a little stricter perhaps. Looking good in a uniform and meeting certain body measurements such as the waist size or thigh size is still very, very important. With today’s liposuction procedures, this can be done both painlessly and with the patient in an awake status so that there’s very minimal discomfort. Patients can return to a limited type of duty almost immediately. Now, this is not, I need to mention, a weight loss type of program. Liposuction and body contouring procedures can make you look like you’ve lost some weight but in actuality the fat that we remove does not weigh that much. You still have to get into the exercise program and watch your diet. MP: Your clinic is in Del Mar, but you really serve all of San Diego, correct? Dr. Sherman: We’re near Highway 56 in Carmel Valley and I5, and we’re really easy on and off. So we are within 20 minutes of say downtown 32nd Street, as well as in the north Camp Pendleton. It’s about a 20-minute drive either way. And of course, east of Miramar, that area is also very, very accessible to our office. MP: Over the years, we’ve all seen major technological advances in cosmetic surgery. Should we assume over the next two or three years there will continue to be more exciting developments? Sports

super bowl odds 2013

W

hile the main focus of sports wagering involves betting on individual games, pool wagers are also quite popular in sports betting. The most popular pool in NFL wagering involves the Super Bowl. Most bookmakers will release their Super Bowl odds in February of each year, right after the Super Bowl of the prior season is completed. Thus, the initial odds are primarily based on the results of the previous year. Once the first odds are released, there will be various shifts in the odds during the

spring and summer based upon personnel changes for each team. The free agency period can also turn the fortunes of several teams in the offseason. The NFL Draft in April is closely monitored, and coaching changes can certainly lead to shifts in the odds. During the offseason, the Super Bowl odds are based on speculation. After all, the actual teams have yet to play a game. Once the season begins, the odds have a deeper rooted foundation because bettors can evaluate the teams on the field each week. It is during the regular season when the odds will fluctuate the most as teams move up and down, like stocks, depending on their perceived value. Big Super Bowl long-shots are tougher to find The appeal of Super Bowl betting to bettors involves the favorable odds of these wagers compared to the 10/11 odds of football point spread bets. It wasn’t uncommon to find teams at odds of 200/1 before the start of the season in the recent past. However,

these kind of odds have basically disappeared since the 1999 St. Louis Rams and 2001 New England Patriots ended up winning Super Bowls after being in the 200/1 range at certain points during their championship seasons. Still, some teams are priced in the 100/1 range prior to each season. These favorable football odds can attract serious professional gamblers and causal sports fans who want to take a shot with their favorite team. A good bet for the house The Super Bowl pool is usually a favorable bet for the house. There are 32 wagering options but only one winner. Because money is pumped into the pool on a year-round basis, online sportsbooks have plenty of opportunities to adjust the odds in their favor. If certain teams are getting bet too heavily, there odds can be adjusted to a lower payout to make the clubs a less favorable wager. In addition, teams that aren’t getting much support can have their odds adjusted to a higher payout to lure in more wagers.

Dr. Sherman: That’s one of the reasons why I love to be here and I’m still very, very active. I had a chance to travel the world during my years with the Navy on active duty. We chose San Diego obviously for the weather, but also because of the fact that we could get into a cosmetic surgery practice that was very, very rewarding and we have continued to invest and are certainly very excited with all the newer technologies that are available, especially in the last five or six years. There’s been an abundance of newer things, newer treatments, perhaps some that are non-surgical but even some surgical improvements that continue to make this area of specialty extremely exciting to me. MP: I’m sure we have readers seeing this and also perhaps some of on YouTube watching this that have been considering cosmetic surgery but maybe haven’t just yet taken that final step. To those folks watching or reading, what advice would you offer them?

valuable center in the league right now because of the emotion and defense that he brings to the Knicks. He’s not known by anyone as a go-to option offensively, but he’ll probably lead the league in field goal percentage again thanks to his ability to find a few easy baskets and put backs each game. Chandler’s prowess and leadership as a center can be contrasted with his rival for best center in the league and for last year’s Defensive Player of the Year honors, Dwight Howard. Right now, despite all of the talent Howard possesses, he doesn’t look ready to become the force his new team needs him to be as Pau Gasol comes back from injury, Steve Nash returns for the first time since October and Kobe Bryant continues to glare at him after every costly missed free throw. It’s very tough to understate how much of a disappointment the Lakers have been. After they traded for Howard and Nash, conventional wisdom said West was down to two players before a ball had been tipped in anger. When the Thunder traded James Harden on the season’s eve, the Lakers were supposed to coast to the Finals against Miami because no other team could be so dynamic and put that much talent on the floor at one time. But that conventional wisdom also didn’t recognize the chemistry and depth teams like Oklahoma City and San Antonio have. Additionally, with Mike D’Antoni now coaching the team, I fail to see how his system is going to translate to the Lakers once all four superstars are playing and healthy. While D’Antoni and Nash are seen as basketball soulmates, Nash and his bad back turn 39 before the end of the season. Questions also have yet to be answered about if D’Antoni’s style can work with a bigger frontline that includes Gasol

uring the young NBA season, there have been two storylines which seem to tower over the rest. They take place on opposite sides of the country and feature exceeding expectations on the East Coast and one of the biggest disappointments to this point in the season in league history on the West Coast. Currently, that East Coast team, the New York Knicks, stunningly sit on top of the Eastern Conference with an 19-6 record despite not having their second most well-known player for any part of the season to this point and possessing a supporting cast that can best be described as geriatric. In fact, when Rasheed Wallace signed for the Knicks, it put the team’s average age at 32 years, 240 days — the oldest team in the history of the league. Some of those older players, especially point guard Jason Kidd, are making the most of the twilight of their career. But it’s two of the Knicks younger players, albeit that they are 10+ year NBA veterans, that have the greatest part in making the Knicks into one of the league’s best teams. At this point in his career, it seems like everything that could possibly be said about Carmelo Anthony could be summed up pretty well in a few short sentences. He’s one of the best pure scorers in the game and a fantastic crunch time option in the regular season. He’s almost impossible to guard and has been a top-10 player for most, if not all, of his career. However, he also has extremely limited playoff success for someone of his stature and quality that is regularly characterized as a selfish ball-hog. But this year, he seems to be morphing into a leader with a great attitude for the game. And perhaps Anthony has become more of a leader because the Knicks’ other key cog, Tyson Chandler is wearing off on him. Chandler is the most

and Howard on the floor together. And better yet, in the more recent smallball-as-status-quo NBA, can any style that relies on such a frontline work to win a title?

PR

The Tale of Two Coasts

Even though the Knicks are on top of the East and the Lakers are still below .500 despite a recent, there is an element of “the jury’s still out” as the calendar turns to 2013. For New York, the elephant in the room is how Amare Stoudemire’s return will affect the chemistry and Chandler/Anthony leadership dynamic. Also, it remains to be seen how the team’s older legs will handle the latter part of the season and the playoffs. For the Lakers, the obvious consideration is getting everyone back healthy, which should help the club at least get over .500. There’s also the possibility of trading Gasol for more athletic pieces to keep up with Oklahoma City/San Antonio/Memphis. But one overlooked part of a possible Laker run is that even without Nash, they have been outscoring opponents by 2.7 points per game, which is far better than the teams around them in the standings. So the Lakers’ luck may turn soon if they can find a way to win close games/have Howard hit free throws. At this point in the NBA season, you’d still have to favor the Heat and Thunder to return to the finals. However, it’s quite the story that the Knicks seem more likely to be playing deep into the spring than the Lakers.

By Jeri Jacquin, Movie Maven 1. DJANGO UNCHAINED – From start to finish I laughed myself silly. Christoph Waltz is the heart of the film, Jaime Foxx is the hero, Leonardo di Caprio was evil but Samuel L. Jackson oooozed evil!

7. PROMETHEUS – What happens when you put Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in a film with Noomi Rapace? An epic film that many had been waiting for. The cinematography is stunning, the special effects are amazing and the casting couldn’t have been better.

2. SEVEN PSYCOPATHS – If you haven’t seen this film and are a fan of insanity then this is the film to see. Farrell takes on a unique role, Rockwell is hilarious, Walken deserves every award, Harrelson cracks me up and John Waits needs a hug.

8. THE IMPOSSIBLE - Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts with Tom Holland bring about the brutality of mother nature and the tsunami of 2004. The emotion is wrenching, the scenery unforgiving with a powerful message of love, family and the unflinching desire to survive.

3. LIFE OF PI – It is no secret that I am not at all a fan of 3-D but if there is one to be seen, relished and seen again this way its LIFE OF PI. The story if heart wrenchingly beautiful, the cinematography is beyond spectacular and the acting of this talented young man is the soul of the film.

9. LAWLESS – I am really shocked this film has received more attention. Tom Hardy and Shia LeBeouf put together a stellar story with Jessica Chastain about moonshining and protecting family. Hardy was quiet but deadly and I couldn’t have been more surprised.

4. LINCOLN – Daniel Day-Lewis has channeled this beloved President in such a way that anyone seeing it will walk away a little better for seeing it. I hardly think this performance will go unnoticed. 5. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY If it weren’t for the 3D and frame rate this film would have been pure perfection. Let that be a lesson to you Jackson! However, that being said – never have I been more happy to see Gandalf, Elron, Galadriel, Bilbo, Gollum and a few other surprises. Will I be there next December for another go? First in line with no regrets.

10. ARGO – I know I will get a lot of flack for not having this further up the list but understand I did enjoy ARGO very much. I think Ben Affleck will get his share of kudos and rightfully so. He kept to the story, the realism is there and the ending still have viewers on the edge of their seat. GUILTY PLEASURE: 3,2,1… FRANKIE GO BOOM – a film with an amazing cast doing unspeakably funny (and I mean unspeakably funny) things in a story about love, life and a brother who films everything. I have watched this film several times because it is one of the funniest twisted things I’ve ever seen!

6. END OF WATCH – What an amazing cop film with Gyllenhaal and Pena working so well together it is quite easy to get lost in their characters. Not even the camera movement bothered me because the story flowed, the action was fantastic and these two actors ARE the film.
