Constitutionalists vs. ‘Interpretationists’
By Cal Thomas
The new House Republican leadership is smart to inaugurate their return to power by reading aloud the U.S. Constitution on the House floor. Recalling America’s founding principles is never a bad idea. To some on the left, though, the Constitution doesn’t mean what it says, but is to be interpreted by judges and politicians. To liberals, this means the document is useful only when it advances a “progressive” economic, political and social agenda. Otherwise, it must be considered a relic of a bygone era. The Constitution, according to liberal thinking, was written at a time when people — including some of its signers — owned slaves and so we moderns must interpret and regularly update it, like computer software. These “interpretationists” are like people who appeal to biblical authority when it appears to support their earthly agenda (“turn the other cheek” means unilateral disarmament; numerous verses about helping the poor mandates government welfare), but ignore it when it offends secular pursuits (abortion, homosexuality, income redistribution, capital punishment). The Emancipation Proclamation and constitutional amendments redressed grievances, such as slavery and voting rights for women. These came not because the Constitution was flawed, but because succeeding generations realized we had failed to live up to its noble precepts, which included the Preamble and its philosophical foundation, the Declaration of Independence. Our rights do not originate with government, but they are to be “secured” by government. In a recent appearance on MSNBC, Washington Post staff writer Ezra Klein reflected the liberal view of the Constitution: “The issue with the Constitution is that the text is confusing because it was written more than a hundred years ago and what people believe it says differs from person
to person.” Apply Klein’s thinking to other works written “more than 100 years ago” and we can dispense with most classics, including William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House.” It is a given that the courts interpret the Constitution for a modern age. The Founders could not have anticipated what the America of 2011 would look like. They set down certain principles that could guide us into the future. These principles — like limited government — transcend eras. As with Scripture, the Constitution contains eternal truths. If followed, one leads to a more ordered life in America and the other to a better afterlife. House Republicans may not get far with their promise to require any new legislation to be justified by constitutional language, but the public will get a history lesson about the intentions of the Founders. This lesson will remind a new generation how wise the Founders were and what we have forgotten that they tried to teach us. That portion of the public which has clamored for change from what they regard as the Obama administration’s brand of socialism must not be content with congressional hearings broadcast on the Internet, or legislation posted on a website several days before members cast votes. Those who want smaller and less costly government must do more to take charge of their own lives, serving as examples for others. This means investing wisely for one’s own retirement and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to lessen the need for hospitals and medicines. Failure to engage Congress between elections will prove the cynics right. Cynics believe, based on past failed reform efforts, that lobbyists and lawyers have the power to quell any true reform movement. Are they right? If they are this could be the last chance for at least a generation to return America to original constitutional principles. If that happens, American decline will be more than a fear; it will quickly become reality.

MILITARY UPDATE

Let the Investigations Begin Given the Democrats’ track record of investigating Republican administrations, they will lack credibility when they protest Republicans investigating actions by the Obama administration. Oversight is a primary function of any Congress. The new Republican House majority is expected to conduct several investigations. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), the new chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has promised to lead six of them, including one that according to Issa’s spokesman, Kurt Bardella, will focus on the “institutional culture of waste, fraud and abuse,” within the federal bureaucracy. To be credible, these investigations must expose Republicans as well as Democrats McCarthy Commie hunter because misspending the public’s money is one of the few bipartisan activities remaining in Washington. The investigation that has the potential to produce the most controversy is one promised by Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). According to the Washington Post, King, who will head the Homeland Security Committee, has promised to examine the “radicalization of some Muslims in the United States and the extent to which American Muslims are cooperating with law enforcement authorities. He also plans to probe homeland security issues.” It is a worthy pursuit, but that examination should also include an investigation of the Obama administration’s Justice Department and its approach to rooting out terrorist suspects and how it may have treated them with kid gloves because of political pressure from identity groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Already one hears familiar cries of “McCarthyism” from the left. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim elected to Congress, was quoted in The Huffington Post as saying the King investigation will “vilify” the Muslim community: “I got so concerned that when I heard about it I actually approached Congressman King on

the House floor and told him that, you know, look, we all need to be concerned about violent radicalization, but not just against Muslims, against anybody.” On MSNBC, Ellison elaborated: “What about the guy who flew a plane into the IRS or what about the guy who killed a guard at the Holocaust museum?” Um, excuse me. Those were individual acts and not part of a worldwide movement that, rightly or wrongly, is conducted under the banner of radical Islam with constant references to the Koran and justifications for mass murder. Anyone who doesn’t see the difference is either attempting to divert the attention of the targeted or is in complete denial. Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, should be included among the witnesses King calls. Pipes wrote in 2002 that, “Islam, the most political of religions, now enjoys a privileged place in Washington, just as it does in almost every capital around the world.” And that is why, he thinks, a more serious response needs to be taken toward this political religion. In a 2004 critique of the U.S. Institute of Peace, Pipes wrote, “Over and over again, branches of the American government have been embarrassed by their blindness to jihadist Islam.” He gave four examples of this pattern — a presidential candidate (George W. Bush), the Department of Defense, the New York State prison system and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Since that critique, Pipes’ list has grown. Read it at www.danielpipes.org/blog/2004/06/the-usgovernments-poor-record-on-islamists. The Obama and Bush administrations all but predicted another terrorist attack. Isn’t it better to investigate how well the government is doing in preventing it, then to point fingers after the fact? So, let the investigations begin into waste, fraud and abuse and into plots to unleash more terrorism inside America. The one can save our President Obama . . . ? money. The other might save our lives.

Also big on the horizon is the Navy’s decision to allow women on submarines. Twenty-four women are in training now for a Dec. 2011 deployment date aboard of four subs — USS Wyoming and USS Georgia, USS Ohio and the USS Maine. All are graduates of the U.S. Naval Acacemy ROTC programs and OCS. Assignments to each sub will include three women — two officers and a supply officer. The submarine force is the last of the Navy’s surface forces to allow women to serve. They have served on noncombat surface ships since 1973 and combat surface ships since 1993.

The Marine Corps Times, Jan. 5, 2011 issue, noted that the U.S. Marine Corps “ended 2010 with its lowest suicide rate since 2008. There were 37 confirmed or suspected suicides in 2010, compared with 52 in 2009, according to preliminary numbers released this week by the Marine Corps Suicide Prevention Program.” The Times added, “Marine leadership has attempted to address the problem” of suicides by “revamping and bolstering…prevention efforts.” In the Army, there have been 144
confirmed or suspected suicides among active-duty soldiers, compared with 162 in 2009. The Navy says its suicide rate dropped from 46 in 2009 to 33 this year. Air Force suicides hit a 17-year high in 2010, and officials say relationship problems remain the No. 1 reason airmen decide to end their lives. Fiftyfour active-duty airmen committed suicide — 13 more than last year — and the highest rate since 1993.
Involuntary Separation Pay Not Authorized fo PFT Failures
To comply with DOD-wide policy, members separated from the Navy after January 1 solely for failing the physical fitness test (PFT) portion of the physical fitness assessment (PFA) will not be authorized involuntary separation pay, according to a NAVADMIN released Dec. 29. Policy for involuntary separations before Jan. 1 did not distinguish between separations for failing the PFT and separations relating to weight control. Members separated for failing the body composition assessment (BCA) in any of three PFA failures may receive one-half involuntary separation pay as long as they are eligible for such pay in all other respects, including the requirement, if qualified, to serve in either the selected reserve or individual ready reserve. Members who have been involved in misconduct or who are not performing satisfactorily must be separated for those reasons, not for weight control.

Aviation Centennial Kick-off Air Show Coming Naval Air Station North Island, the official “Birthplace of Naval Aviation,” will kick off the 2011 Centennial of Naval Aviation with an air show featuring a historic aerial review on February 12. This event will begin a year-long celebration of 100 years of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aviation progress and achievement. In 1911, the Navy’s first aviator, Lieutenant T.G. After 100 years, Naval Aviation has grown from a minor tactical capability to a primary instrument of our national security. The air show will include a flightline
full of numerous types of aircraft displays from old vintage aircraft to the newest technology of fighter jets, aircraft carrier and amphibious assault ship tours, tactical demonstration by the Marine AirGround Task Force, a motorcycle stunt show, antique car collections, sponsor and vendor booths, live entertainment, food and beverage, children’s activities and more. This once-in-a-lifetime celebration promises to be an exciting event for the entire family. Admission and parking are free to the general public. Take advantage of this opportunity to see the world’s finest aircraft, aviators and

VETERANS ROUNDUP I MP
Secret VA benefits for seniors This is the second in a series of “secrets” revealed by author Victoria L. Collier, JD, in her book “47 Secret Veterans’ Benefits for Seniors, Benefits You Have Earned... but Don’t Know About”
Recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses of BOTH the veteran and the spouse are deductible from gross income.
Recurring, un-reimbursed medical expenses are costs paid out of pocket for medical expenses. These expenses typically include medical premiums, such as Medicare premiums, supplemental health care premiums, prescriptions, doctors’ visits, travel to and from doctors’ visits, home health care, assisted living facility care and nursing home care. For example, let’s say your gross income is $4,000 a month. You subtract out your Medicare premium ($96.40 for each spouse = $192.80), your supplemental health insurance premium ($125 for each spouse — $250), your medications ($500 for husband and $300 for a wife = $800), and the home health care or assisted living facility costs ($4,200). Total recurring, un-reimbursed medical expenses in this example come to $5,442.80. Thus, recurring, unreimbursed medical expense exceed total income.
The goal we are trying to achieve, if we want to receive the maximum pension allowance from the VA, is that we zero out our income. If we do that, then the VA will pay the maximum amount permissible under the level of pension we qualify for medically. If the income is not zeroed out, that does not mean you are not eligible. It only means that the VA is not going to pay you the maximum. Instead, the VA will pay the difference between your excess income (after all permissible deductions) and the maximum permissible pension limit. In the example above, the total recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses exceeded the gross monthly income by $442.80. Thus, the VA should pay the claimant the maximum for any of the levels he or she is seeking. Assuming the veteran applied for pension with aid and attendance, the VA should pay $1,949 per month because in this example the veteran is married. However, let’s change the example slightly. Let’s say the income is the same at $5,000 per month. All expenses stay the same except medications. The veteran receives his medications free from the VA instead of paying out of pocket, and his wife doe snot take any
medications. Now their total recurring, non-reimbursed medical expenses are only $4,642.80 per month, an amount less than their combined monthly income. But this does not mean they are not eligible. Rather, the VA should pay the veteran approximately $1,591 ($5,000 income minus $4,642 = $358 excess income: $1,949 maximum pension minus $358 excess income = $1,591 payment by VA for pension with aid and attendance). This is a simplified version of the calculation the VA conducts. There is actually more that goes into the calculation that is beyond the scope of this book. Thus, the figures above may not be exactly the amount the VA would pay, but they are very close.
News Briefs
Deportation of War Veterans Postponed Two Mexican-born Colorado brothers who served with the U.S. military in Vietnam will be able to remain in this country for another year after a judge decided to postpone until 2012 carrying out the deportation orders against them. Valente and Manuel Valenzuela, ages 62 and 59, respectively, are among the 11 children of a New Mexico woman and her Mexican-born U.S. citizen husband. In 2005, Manuel was arrested for speeding. To his surprise, the police told him that his driver’s license was not valid. When he went to the Department of Motor Vehicles to clear the matter up, he learned that his license had been revoked because he did not have a valid Social Security Number. Manuel thought that it was a mistake until he was informed that the U.S. Homeland Security Department had ordered the license revoked because doubts existed about his citizenship. According to recent ICE figures, some 3,000 war veterans are facing deportation proceedings.
VA Set to Verify Veteran Small Businesses
To further advocate for Veterans, VA announced that companies identifying themselves as small businesses or Veteran–owned businesses to gain priority for some Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) contracts must now provide documentation verifying their status within 90 days of receiving notice from the agency.
Update on COLA for VA

Shaggy, a chart-topper with hits like “Memphis,” “Oh Carolina,” and “It’s Wasn’t Me,” was born Orville Richard Burrell on October 22, 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was nicknamed “Shaggy” by his friends after the cartoon character from Scooby Doo. In 1988, he joined the United States Marine Corps as a Field Artillery Cannon Crewman with 5th Battalion 10th Marines. While enlisted in the Marines he served during Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War. It was during this time that Shaggy perfected his signature singing voice, breaking the constant monotony of running and marching cadences with his flair for inflection. It is also where he got the inspiration for his song “Boombastic.”

COMMENTARY By Nicolai Sennels I MP
INBREEDING & TERRORISM? Psychological Research: Muslim Inbreeding Promotes Terrorism. The Danish psychologist Nicolai Sennels has written previously about the effects of Muslim inbreeding. In the essay below he traces the possible connection between the genetic damage done by inbreeding and terroristic behavior.
on Intelligence Quotient and Neonatal Behaviours of nsari Muslim Children” [pdf]). Such facts might make several pieces fall into place for many people.
Here comes another eye opener: If there are two things that characterize the criminal Mulsim culture, they are terrorism and inbreeding. The latest research shows that these two things might be closely connected. The concept of terrorism does not need any introduction. Not everyone might know, however, that seventy percent of Pakistanis and forty percent of Turks are inbred (Jyllands-Posten, 27/2 2009 “More stillbirths among immigrants”). Research shows that the same goes for close to half of all Arabs (Reproductive Health Journal, 2009 “Consanguinity and reproductive health among Arabs”). First cousin marriages have been the tradition in many Muslim families for innumerable generations. Such marriages increase the risk of negative mental and physical consequences. My article, “Muslim inbreeding: Impacts on intelligence, sanity, health and society” details extensive research data on the
subject. In brief, inbreeding through consanguineous marriages increases the risk of depression (Indian Journal of Psychiatry, 2009 “Relationship between consanguinity and depression in a south Indian population”) and schizophrenia (American Psychiatric Press, 1982 “The role of genetic factors in the etiology of the schizophrenic disorders”). The risk of serious illnesses or handicaps increases by up to 1800 percent (BMJ, 1994 “Infant death and consanguineous marriage”). Risk of mental retardation increases with 400 percent (Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, 1978 “Effect of inbreeding on IQ and mental retardation”). Research shows that the IQ is 10-16 points lower in children born from blood related parents and that abilities related to social behavior and empathy develops slower in inbred babies (Indian National Science Academy, 1983 “Consanguinity Effects

Research published in The Journal of Aggression and Violent Behaviour has proven a connection between suicide bombers and depression and physical handicaps (BT, December 15th 2010 “Why most terrorists are useless”). Research suggests that many suicide bombers are suffering from depression, and their actions are just a socially accepted (among Muslims) way of committing suicide in order to end their mental torment. Yusuf Yadgari of the Medical University of Kabul has autopsied the remains of suicide bombers and his findings support this theory. Yadgari found that close to ninety percent were suffering from severe illness such as blindness, cancer, missing limbs or leprosy. Many Muslim societies, including that of Afghanistan, have a low social acceptance of handicaps and severe illnesses. According to Yadgari, being physically handicapped or mentally retarded often leads to exclusion in a society like Afghanistan, and becoming a martyr might be the only chance of achieving social recognition and honor — if not just a way to end the pain of being socially isolated (which is especially traumatizing in collectivist cultures like Islam). Al Qaida’s use of people with Down syndrome might be another unpleasant side effect of the many chromosomal illnesses resulting from inbreeding between first cousins. People with low intelligence (because of inbreeding) might also be easier to brainwash with fundamentalist Islam. Surely the Quran’s numerous verses ordering Muslims to fight to the death in order to spread sharia and defend the honor of their religion and prophet is the
most obvious and strongest motivator for Islamic terrorism. Being an outcast due to a physical handicap, living in a country that does not manage to take care of handicapped people, suffering from physical pain following disease, or being depressed or schizophrenic, has now proved to be an important factor as well. The unhealthy culture of inbreeding in Muslim societies increases the number of Muslim martyrs who are looking for an honourable and socially and religiously accepted way out of here. Nicolai Sennels is a psychologist and the author of “Among Criminal Muslims: A Psychologist’s Experiences with the Copenhagen Municipality.” The opinions, beliefs and viewpoints expressed by the various authors and forum participants in this publication do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints of the Military Press. We invite you into a discourse, and would like to hear your thoughts.
WEIRD NEWS I MP
It was a REALLY bad week for some wildlife Dead Birds Fall from Sky in Louisiana
A total of 450 dead birds were recovered in Louisiana in early January because of what a wildlife expert says were power lines that simply got in the way of their migratory path. Two of the birds that were examined showed signs of trauma to the neck, back, and head which points to the theory of power lines. The birds that were killed by the power lines include the red-winged blackbird, grackles, starlings, and the brown-headed cowbird. Even though there are many scientific explanations that were given for the massive number of bird deaths, some are saying that it was due to poorlytimed fireworks which were shot off nearby.
Deja Vu... Dead Birds Fall from Sky in Arkansas
More than 3,000 red-winged blackbirds mysteriously tumbled dead from the Arkansas sky on New Year’s Eve. A preliminary report suggests the birds died of trauma of unknown cause. “The birds obviously hit something very hard and had hemorrhages,” gameand-fish commission bird expert Karen Rowe told CNN. It’s unknown whether the trauma occurred during contact with something in the sky—such as lightning or highaltitude hail—or when the birds hit the ground, Rowe said.
was to blame, a state spokesman said January 2. Dead drum fish floated in the water and lined the banks of a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River near Ozark, about 125 miles northwest of Little Rock, a spokesman for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. A tugboat operator discovered the fish kill December 30, and fisheries officials collected some of the dying creatures to conduct tests.
Creepier Still... Thousands of Dead Crabs Wash Ashore in England
As if thousands of dead birds falling from the sky and millions of fish turning up dead across the world in the last week weren’t enough, the Thanet Coast in the
UK is now littered with tens of thousands of dead crabs that have washed ashore. The events are likely unrelated, however, and the BBC notes that this is the third year in a row thousands of dead devil crabs, also known as velvet swimming crabs, have turned up on the coastline near Kent, England. It is estimated that 40,000 of the dead crabs have washed up on the beaches this year. According to LiveScience, experts believe cold weather is to blame for the massive crab deaths. Tests conducted in past years have turned up no results for disease or similar problems, leaving the cause an unexplained mystery, though hypothermia is conjectured.

Bird-pocalypse in Sweden
Birds of a feather continue to die together. Shortly before midnight on January 4, residents in the Swedish town of Falköping found between 50 and 100 jackdaw carcasses strewn across their lawns and roads. County veterinarian Robert ter Horst believes the birds were scared to death. “We have received information from local residents last night,” he told Swedish news agency TT. “Our main theory is that the birds were scared away because of fireworks and landed on the road, but couldn’t fly away from the stress and were hit by a car.” Anders Wirdheim of the Swedish Ornithological Society told TT that the flock of birds was particularly vulnerable this year, and less likely to respond competently to a fright. “This winter has been unusually tough and jackdaws may be in poor condition. That makes it easier for them to fly into different objects. There is very little food in the wild compared with previous years and I see dying birds every day.”

Life’s Time for Reflections
With the reflections we had last week around the first of the year and looking at our lives and making new goals or resolutions… many, like me, have commented that they have been looking around at all that is transpiring in the world and are feeling a little onedge. This seems to be a time of much introspection for many who I counsel and talk with. It is a time when many seem to be setting new bearings. Within this time of reflection it is good to check our foundation and strengthen our pillars to hold up what we feel are the important things of our life. As I have shared in the past, in previous articles, I enjoy looking for the meanings of movies, books and music. On the radio airwaves recently has been a song that hit me deeply when I really listened to the lyrics. You, too, may have been touched by Tim McGraw’s inspirational song, “Live Like You Were Dying.” The song shares messages that we might all do well to consider every once in a while. Insert yourself into this song’s story as you read the following.
Man what’d you do?
He said, I was in my early forties with a lot of life before me when a moment came that stopped me on a dime and I spent most of the next days looking at the x-rays, talking about the options and talking ‘bout sweet time. I asked him, when it sank in, that this might really be the real end, how’s it hit you when you get that kinda news?
And then, I went sky diving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu, and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I’d been denying. And he said someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.
And he said, I went sky diving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu, and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I’d been denying, and he said someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying. He said I was finally the husband that most the time I wasn’t, and I became a friend a friend would like to have, and all the sudden going fishin’ wasn’t such an imposition, and I went three times that year I lost my dad. Well I finally read the good book, and I took a good long hard look, at what I’d do if I could do it all again.
Forever Faithful
Like tomorrow was a gift and you got eternity to think about, What’d you do with it, what did you do with it? What did you do with it? What did you do with it’? Sky diving, I went Rocky Mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named FuManchu, and then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter, and I watched an eagle as it was flying, And he said someday I hope you get the chance, to live like you were dying…
Now, I don’t know about you, but this song has sure made me think about what I’m doing with the time I have here. At 40, I was attending Army Airborne School. My body had taken a beating in the three-week course. On jump week, my body gave out. I was the second one out of the door of the C141. Catching an unexpected thermal that took me way out of the drop zone, I landed hard and awoke in the hospital. It was a time like the above song expressed; a time of great reflection on how happy would I be with what I had done in my life if it were to end. I tried to improve areas needing it and went back to jump again six months later. Then, when two in my family were diagnosed with cancer in 2003, I reflected again on how I am with those around me. When such things happen, you realize how fragile life really is, and how it can change in an instant. Sometimes when people are diagnosed with a serious illness, they can become very self-focused and worried about the possible outcome. This is understandable, but perhaps we’d do better to take Tim McGraw’s advice and spend our time living life fully. Even before such a traumatic event, we could decide to be one of those who will “love deeper, speak sweeter, and give forgiveness,” while we still have the life and breath to do so. Often in life’s daily encounters, we think more of those who have pressing, perhaps even life-threatening, problems. But, it is equally reasonable to believe that we ought to, as circumstances dictate, spread kindness, love, concern, and genuine assistance to those whose problems, in the grand scheme of things, are not quite as pressing. It has been said, “As our society grows and the pace of our lives increases, seemingly exponentially, we

must live with evermore attention to the life and example of our Lord, especially the love and hope and compassion He displayed.” Each of us had the charge to “be not a doubter, but a doer; not a leaner, but a lifter.” Often we live side by side with those who really need our love and compassion, but we do not communicate heart to heart. There are those within the sphere of our own influence who, with outstretched hands, cries out: ‘Is there no balm in Gilead…?’ (Jer. 8:22) We would be wise to answer as “A Creed,” by Edwin Markham shares, “There is a destiny that makes us brothers; None goes his way alone; All that we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own.” May we take this time of year to reflect and prepare for the busy year ahead, which creates many special moments of life reflection, may we “take a good long hard look” at how we may be better in areas of our life that will also bless those around us. I know it will make our lives so much more rich and full. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation…

Nick Diaz versus Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos Everyone had been waiting for the showdown between Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz and Jason “Mayhem” Miller. The two have had a very public feud since an in-ring melee involving Miller, Diaz and his brother, and a Diaz teammate, Jake Shields. Well, everyone is going to have to keep waiting. The plan was to have the two fight on Strikeforce’s Jan. 29 card in San Jose, Calif., but the sides could not agree on terms, mostly centered on their weight. Diaz is a welterweight and Miller a middleweight. On December 22, Strikeforce confirmed the high-strung Diaz will instead defend his title against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, the husband of the women’s welterweight world champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. The husband and wife team live locally and train students at The Arena MMA in Point Loma and at a nearby Chute Gym. The promotion also confirmed a reported title fight between middleweight champ Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Robbie Lawler. The two bouts will serve as co-main events on Showtime. Diaz (23-7) is making the second defense of his title. He defeated Marius Zaromskis in January 2010 to win the belt and recently defended it in a rematch with San Diego’s K. J. Noons. Those victories are part of Diaz’s eight-fight winning streak dating back to mid-year 2008. Santos (18-13), a powerful striker from San Diego via Rondonopolis, Brazil, has won back-to-back bouts. This will be his second fight at 170 lbs. after knocking out renowned striker Marius Zaromskis in the first round of his 170 pound debut after coming down from the 185-205 pound weight class where he had fought his entire career. If Santos can pull off the upset, it would be the first time ever that a husband and wife held MMA titles at the same time. Santos, who volunteers his time for the Wounded Warriors project, is 33 and stands 5’9” tall. He’s definitely the good guy in this upcoming match. In the gym, his students love him and consider him an outstanding teacher. Like most MMA fighters, his ears are a bit puffy, he has a multitude of tattoos and he’s broken nearly every bone in his body. Talking about sucking it up, in his first fight for Strikeforce, he fought with a bum knee, bruised arm and broken rib. According to Santos, the toughest opponents he’s faced include Angelo Araujo, Melvin Manhoef and Mauricio Shogun Rua. His bout with Manhoef has to be one of the most memorable in the history of MMA.
The question everyone wants to know: How did you meet your wife? “Because of my affiliation with the Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba, Brazil, I was teaching classes at a local gym. One day Cris came in to play handball. She’s an awesome handball player. It was love at first sight. We started dating and within a short time we were married.”

Director George Hickenlooper names names in a film “inspired by real events,” using a fictional sledgehammer to attack the cozy love triangle involving lobbyists, lawmakers and money. Rating: Three stars.
Rabbit Hole
(Drama, PG-13, 91 minutes). This is the tricky and very observant story of how a married couple is getting along eight months after their 4-year-old ran out into the street and was struck dead by a car. As a couple, they’ve reached that point of touchiness where nothing ever seems to be the right thing to say. What makes John Cameron Mitchell’s film so interesting is that it bravely investigates what you say then. Sounds like a mournful dirge, but in fact is entertaining and surprisingly amusing. With Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. Rating: Three and a half stars.
All Good Things
(Drama, R, 101 minutes). David (Ryan Gosling) is the rebellious son of a wealthy Manhattan family that owns sleazy 42nd Street real estate. He marries Katie (Kirsten Dunst), and they move to Vermont to open an organic products store. But his father (Frank Langella) pressures him to return to the family business, and he undergoes alarming changes, eventually connected to two murders. Based on one of those true stories Dominick Dunne used to write about in Vanity Fair. Rating: Three and a half stars.
Somewhere
Gulliver’s Travels
(Fantasy adventure, PG, 85 minutes). Not your average Jack Black movie. More of an innocent family adventure, filmed in a traditional style. Black, as a lowly mail clerk for a newspaper, finds himself in the land of Lilliput — where he is first a captive, then a friendly giant, and finally a hero. With Emily Blunt as a princess, King Billy Connolly and Gen. Chris O’Dowd both rivals for her affection, and Amanda Peet as Black’s editor. Innocent fun. Rating: Three stars.
(Drama, R, 96 minutes). Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a movie star. He has access to sex, booze, drugs, but feels no pleasure. He sits in a Los Angeles hotel room, stuck. His 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning) comes to stay for a few days, but he clearly has no feeling for fatherhood. He’s given an award in Milan, but hardly notices in the confusion of strangers around him in a hotel suite. He retreats to the same famous West Hollywood hotel where John Belushi died, which for him might have been a recommendation. Sofia Coppola’s film, winner of the Golden Lion at Venice, is a masterpiece of observation of hopelessness. Rating: Four stars.
Blue Valentine
(Drama, R, 120 minutes). Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as Dean and Cindy in two seasons of marriage: Six years ago when love was fresh, and today, when love proves unable to support the weight of real life. Director Derek Cianfrance closely observes the details as this couple fails to comprehend the larger picture. Dean thinks marriage is the station. Cindy thought it was the train. Rating: Three and a half stars.

THE ORIGINS OF THE SUPERBOWL The first AFL-NFL World Championship Game in professional American football, later known as Super Bowl I and referred to in some contemporary reports as the Supergame, was played on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The National Football League (NFL) champion Green Bay Packers (14–2) scored three second-half touchdowns en route to a 35–10 win over the American Football League (AFL) champion Kansas City Chiefs (12–2–1). Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr, who completed 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception, was named Super Bowl MVP. The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional American football in the United States, culminating a season that begins in the autumn of the previous calendar year. The Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example, Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, following the regular season played in 1966, while Super Bowl XLV will be played on February 6, 2011, to determine the champion of the 2010 regular season. The game was created as part of a merger agree-

It was agreed that the two leagues’ champion teams would play in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a “conference,” and the game was then played between the conference champions. The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered a de facto American national holiday, called “Super Bowl Sunday.” It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption, after Thanksgiving Day. Mommy Makeover for the Military Mom Having children and being a mom is a blessing. Being a mother can be a tough job and it can be tough on your body. Unfortunately with childbearing and breast-feeding comes unwanted changes on your body like stretch marks, loose skin, saggy breasts, and weight gain. It is essential for a mother to take good care of her family as well as

The operation involves rearranging the breast tissue, shifting the nipple position and increasing the breast firmness by tightening the skin. Modern innovations in breast lift techniques include limited incision techniques and nipple sensation sparing techniques.

Mommy makeovers are designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing and nursing or breastfeeding. Every makeover is different and may require multiple procedures to achieve the best results possible. A mommy makeover may include procedures such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction, and / or liposuction surgery.
Exercise and a healthy diet are beneficial during and after pregnancy. We will recommend that you be at your goal weight or that you lose as much weight as you can before having the procedures performed to get the best results possible. This is to ensure a long-lasting result and avoid any further surgery. Fortunately, as a result of a mommy makeover, many women find themselves motivated to maintain their new and improved look. They feel sexier, happier, and ultimately more confident.
Breast augmentation is performed to increase the size and fullness of the breast. Women whose breasts are disproportionately small, or whose breasts have sagged or “deflated” after childbirth, or who have uneven shape or size breasts, are candidates for the procedure. Abdominoplasty, also known as the “tummy tuck,” is an operation performed to remove excess fatty tissue and skin folds in the mid- and lower-abdominal region and to tighten up the abdominal wall muscles. American Voice’s of N One of the most notorious Americans of the 20th century was a failed Broadway actress turned radio announcer named Mildred Gillars (1900-1988), better known to American GIs as “Axis Sally.” Despite the richness of her life tory, there has never been a full-length biography of this ambitious, star-struck American girl who evolved into a reviled disseminator of Nazi propaganda. At the outbreak of war in September 1939, “Midge” had been living in Germany for five years. Hoping to marry, she chose to remain in the Nazi-run state even as the last Americans departed for home. In 1940 she was hired by German overseas radio, where she evolved froma simple disc jockey into a master propagandist. Under the tutelage of her married lover, Mat Otto Koischwica, Gillars became the personification of the Nazi regime to the American GI. Spicing her broadcasts with music, including her signature song, “Lili Marlene,” Midge used her soothing voice to taunt Allied troops about the supposed infidelities of their wives and girlfriends back home, as well as the horrible fates they were likely to meet on the battlefield. Supported by German military intelligence, she was able to convey personal greetings to U.S. units, even individuals, creating an eerie foreboding among troops who realized the Germans knew who and where they were. After broadcasting for Berlin up to the very end of the warm, Mildred Gillars found her world in collapse, as her lover had died, Berlin was overrun by Soviet troops, and the regime she had served had been destroyed. She tried but failed to pose as a refugee, and was found by U.S. authorities who had prioritized her for capture. Brought back to Washington, D.C., her 1949 trial for treason captured the attention and raw emotion of a nation fresh from the horrors of the Second World War. Gillars’ 12-year imprisonment and subsequent life on parole in Ohio, including a stay in a convent, concludes this remarkable story of a women whose boundless ambition led her into the service of evil, and who then attempted to rebuild her life in the country she had betrayed. Thoroughly documented and containing rare photographs, as well as an appendix of actual transcripts of Mildred Gillars’ radio broadcasts for the Third Reich, “Axis Sally: The American Voice of Nazi Germany” is the first full-length biography of this complex yet mythologized figure of World War II. Axis Sally – The American Voice of Nazi Germany By Richard Lucas Published by Casemate
Selected Transcripts of Axis Sally Broadcasts MIDGE AT THE MIKE – May 1943 “This is Berlin calling. Berlin calling the American mothers, wives and sweethearts. And I’d just like to say, girls, that when Berlin calls, it pays to listen. When Berlin calls it pays to listen in because there is an American girl sitting at the microphone every Tuesday evening at the same time with a few words of truth to her countrywomen back home. Girls, you all know, of course, by now that it’s a very serious situation and there must be some reason for my being here in Berlin, some reason why I’m not sitting at home with you at the little sewing bees knitting socks for our men in French North Africa.
“Yes, girls, there is a reason and it is this: it’s because I am not on the side of Roosevelt and his Jewish friends and his British friends; because I’ve been brought up to be a 100 percent American girl, conscious of her enemies. And the enemies are precisely those people who are fighting against Germany today and in case you don’t know it, indirectly against America too, because a defeat for Germany would mean a defeat for America. Believe me, it would be the very beginning of the end of America and all of her civilization and that’s why girls, I’m staying over here and having these little heart-to-heart talks with you once a week. I know they’re awfully short and there’s not much one can say, but at least I’m so convinced that it’s the truth and I’m sure the truth will win. And besides that, you know I’m in constant touch with your men over here interned in Germany as prisoners of war and I’m sure you’ll be very happy to get some news of them from time to time. And I’ll do my best to transmit that to you just as often as I can. “And now girls, just last week in speaking to one American boy, he told us then about the films which he had seen in America — films which dealt with the barbarism of Germany, and of the treatment which she deals out to American prisoners and all of that sort of thing. He said he realizes today that that’s only Jewish propaganda, that whereas he was told at home, before donning the American uniform, that he would be beaten and knocked around by the Germans if he ever got into a prisoner of war camp. That has not been
the case. He’s never been beaten. He’s only had the most ideal treatment, and even said, ‘I can only say to you that I’m happy here in this German prisoner of war camp’ and receives just the same treatment that the Germans also receive, and said, ‘Well, that was just Jewish propaganda. I realize it now. I did not realize it when I was at home, but I’d just like to say that today I have my own opinion.’ Well, girls, and one day you’re going to have your own opinion too. The only thing I’m afraid of is that perhaps it will be too late. And that’s why I’m just going to put all the energy I can into these few moments I have with you each week and try to get you to see the light of day and to let you realize that you’re on the wrong side of the fence. “Gee girls, isn’t it a darn shame; all the sweet old American summer atmosphere which the boys are missing now. Just imagine sitting out on the old back porch in a sweet old rocking chair listening tot he birds at twilight. Instead of that, the boys are over there in the hot, sunny desert longing for home and for what? Fighting for our friends? Well, well, well, since when are the British our friends? Now, girls, come on, be honest. As one American to another, do you love the British? Why, of course, the answer is ‘no.’ Do the British love us? Well, I should say not! But we are fighting for them. We are shedding our good, young blood for this ‘kike’ war, for this British war. Oh, girls, why don’t you wake up? I mean, after all, the women can do something, can’t they? Have you tried to realize where the situation’s leading us to? Because it is the
Page 24 January 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
downfall of civilization if it goes on like that. After all, let God save the King. If he’s worthy of it, I’m sure God can. At least there’s no reason for we Americans to get mixed up in British messes. “Well, girls, you can put American uniforms on our boys; you can put a rifle in their hands; you can send them across with orders to destroy Germany; to bombard the women and children; to fight side by side with the British soldiers and, as the old homily adage goes, ‘You can bring a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.’ And you can force the American soldiers to fight side by side with the British soldiers, but you can never bring understanding between the Americans and the British. Thank God, and I hope it never will happen. But I don’t have to hope because it never will. But the basis for a healthy, sane friendship and understanding always has been and always will be there between Germany and America, and that’s the thing I’m going to fight for. And I says, damn Roosevelt, damn Churchill and damn all of their Jews who have made this war possible. And I as an American girl will stay over here on this side of the fence, on Germany’s side, because it is the right side, as I’ve told you many, many times before.” (Source: Appellate Brief, United States v. Mildred E. Gillars (Sisk), December 949, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., National Archives.)
Nazi Germany & Japan TOKYO ROSE A THORN IN OUR SIDE
Tokyo Rose was a generic name given by Allied forces in the South Pacific during World War II to any of approximately a dozen Englishspeaking female broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. The intent of these broadcasts was to disrupt the morale of Allied forces listening to the broadcast. American servicemen in the Pacific often listened to the propaganda broadcasts to get a sense, by reading between the lines, of the effect of their military actions. Farther from the action, stories circulated that Tokyo Rose could be unnervingly accurate, naming units and even individual servicemen. Though such stories have never been substantiated by documents such as scripts and recorded broadcasts, they have been reflected in popular books and films such as “Flags of Our Fathers.” Similar rumors surround the propaganda broadcasts of Lord HawHaw and Axis Sally. The name “Tokyo Rose” is most strongly associated with Iva Toguri D’Aquino. D’Aquino broadcasted as “Orphan Ann” during the 15- to 20-minute D.J. segment of the 75-minute program, “The Zero Hour,” on Radio Tokyo (NHK).
The program consisted of propaganda-tinged skits and slanted news reports as well as popular American music. Toguri’s advocates have long argued that other announcers better suited the legend. These include the American Ruth Hayakawa (who substituted for Iva on weekends), Canadian June Suyama (“The Nightingale of Nanking”), who also broadcast on Radio Tokyo, and Myrtle Lipton (“Little Margie”) who broadcast from Japanese-controlled Radio Manila. However, during the war, journalists and officials with the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Information Service identified Toguri’s “Orphan Ann” as the woman “most servicemen seem to refer to when they speak of Tokyo Rose” but characterized the “legends” of clairvoyance that “piled up about ‘Tokyo Rose” as “apocryphal.”

AT THE MOVIES with Jeri Jacquin / Movie Maven I MP
Now open in theaters is a film from director Shana Feste and Screen Gems with Maguire Entertainment’s offering of “Country Strong.” This film tells the story of Kelly Cantor (Gwynth Paltrow), a country singer who has found herself in rehab for alcoholism. While there she meets up with Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund), an orderly who also happens to write and sing country music, and the two begin an affair. That is until her husband James (Tim McGraw) pulls her out of rehab and puts her back on the road. Kelly agrees to go as long as her husband puts Beau in as her opening act. He is hesitant since he wants the young and very pretty Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) to do it. Everyone becomes part of the act and traveling to get Kelly back into singing becomes tough. She is carrying a burden of a bad show in Dallas and can’t seem to get herself together. When she sees that Beau and the young Chiles are skyrocketing to the top. Kelly realizes she must pull herself together to redeem not only her career but her marriage that has fallen apart as well. I n Dallas, Kelly must give the performance of her life. FINAL WORD: There is no denying that Ms. Paltrow can sing but this was not the role to display those talents. Her character was all over the place and after some time the audience begins to lose their ability to feel for her. But then again she is a lyin’, cheatin’, drinkin’ kinda gal – oh wait – I feel a country song coming on. McGraw is good in his role as James. There are moments where he truly shines and shows depth of feeling. The sad part of this is that otherwise he seems like an uncaring sleazy husband! He tears up really well though. Hedlund is fine as Beau; again his character is all over the place. One minute singing, one minute cheating, caring and then not caring. Wow, country song number two coming on! Meester as Chiles was just too much sugar for me to handle. The innocent act was not only drawn out and ridiculous but unbelievable to boot. If she batted those eyes one more time I was going to have to hurt the next person I saw in a ten-gallon hat. Other cast include: Marshall Chapman as Winnie, Jeremy Childs as JJ, J.D. Parker as Joe, Cinda McCain as Misty, and Gabe Sipos as the ever adorable Travis. In the end – it doesn’t matter where you’ve been as long you come back strong.

Dangerous New Drug (Bath Salts?) with drug abuse of blizzard and other substances, took a massive toll on both his body and mind. “When your body is run down and you’re living on nothing but your drug ,you don’t care about nobody but yourself,” he said. An addicted life is very controlling. You have no choice. A lot of people think it means you’re free as long as the police don’t catch you. But it holds you, you’re in bondage.”

ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY — Called “blizzard” or “ivory wave, “ they are concentrated bath salts that are completely legal, and if ingested produce a meth-like high. To many, the word “blizzard” brings to mind the thought of blustery winter snow storms. For Luke Weyandt, it means another way to get high. “You can snort it, eat it, inject it, or smoke it,” said Weyandt, a former user. It’s a high that mimics meth and it is completely legal. The product is called blizzard, concentrated bath salts readily available to buy online or over the counter. It is a new and emerging trend in substance abuse and most people haven’t even heard of it. Patty Karn, Prevention Supervisor with the Blair County Drug and Alcohol Program Inc., recalled the first time she heard of the drug. “I received a phone call from a local emergency room asking me what I knew about blizzard. I thought, oh yeah, Dairy Queen. She said no, rather, we have some youth in our emergency room who have overdosed on blizzard.” “What we’re seeing is an emerging trend of pockets of people that are starting to turn to these over the counter type substances and using them in

Justin Bieber
–
Is This a Teen Dream or a Coming Nightmare? “Everything is important. But, you know, my sanity is important, too. Even if I am angry I’ll just put a smile on my face and fake it. ...I know I have to give up a lot of myself, or a lot of private life. ... And I want to be normal. Well, not normal, but I want to have some sort of normalcy. I don’t want to go crazy.” That’s teen dream Justin Bieber ending his Vanity Fair interview with Lisa Robinson. At 16, Bieber might be the youngest person ever to appear on VF’s cover. Now, of course, I have to admit, I’ve never sat down and listened to a Justin Bieber song. I saw him perform once on a televised awards show sometime last year. He looked 12 (he still does) and appeared to be relying heavily on a lot of pre-recorded backup and supposedly sexy moves. (I found his little grinds and tentative crotch-grabbing silly.) But the girls in the audience were delirious. For a long time, Bieber’s popularity seemed forced, a sort of faux stardom. But perhaps that’s how it always seems when the star is very young and the observers not so young at all. In any case, the boy does seem to be “somebody.” Let’s just hope this rush to the cover of VF doesn’t spoil it. Sometimes being on the cover of VF is like winning an Oscar too soon. As for Mr. Bieber keeping his sanity; not going crazy; from his mouth to God’s ear. In all likelihood, Justin will go the way of Ricky Nelson, Fabian, the Cassidy brothers, David and Shaun, Leif Garrett,
Bobby Sherman, most of N’Sync and The Backstreet Boys, Hanson, etc. That’s not a bad thing, if Justin’s parents and managers reliably handle his estimated $100 million fortune. But, it’s hard to predict. He is so babyishlooking right now (unthreatening for his little girl fans) that it is hard to imagine him as a more sexually assured older teen or young adult, with facial hair. Lisa Robinson cites Leonardo DiCaprio as one of the teen idols who escaped being typed, but Leo did not sing; he had extraordinary acting talent. (She also mentions Michael Jackson, as having survived the transition. But then — kaboom!) There’s an entirely different relationship between a singer and his audience. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio was never convincing as a “teen idol.” Something in his face and manner. He was clearly meant to be an actor — and not one who was going to rely on his youth. He’s certainly not pretty anymore. So here’s to Justin Bieber. He’s just a child and I can only wish him well in what can be a horrible business. I won’t be attending any Bieber concerts. But if he gets into acting, I’ll most assuredly take a look.

TOP SPEED 2012 Toyota FT-86
2012 Chevrolet Camaro LFX V6
It’s been more than a year since Toyota unveiled the concept version of the FT-86 Coupe at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. During that year, we’ve heard so many reports, rumors, and whispers about the car, that we’re beginning to think that this could very well be the second-coming of Toyota’s iconic Celica line. We already know that the Toyota FT86 will come with a Subaru version as a direct result of the collaboration between the two Japanese brands. We’ve also received reports that the FT-86 will come with it’s own factory modified G Sports version. Then there were reports that the Toyota version of the FT-86 will be badged as a Scion.
Immediately following the release of the ultra cool Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, Chevolet has announced the introduction of a new trim level for the muscle car showing up sometime in 2012. So, in addition to the LC, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS, and 2SS, customers will also be able to opt for the Camaro LFX powered by a 3.6 liter V6 engine with E85 capability. This new trim level for the Chevrolet Camaro comes with an updated version of the engine used in models like the Cadillac CTS, SRX, and Chevy Equinox. The engine features a composite intake manifold, integrated exhaust manifolds, and optimized NVH/airflow treatments that allow the 270hp typically delivered by the engine to increase to anywhere from 325-330hp. There will be no major changes made to either the interior or the exterior, but there will obviously be an LSX badge to distinguish it from the other models in the line-up. Expect to see the new model debut sometime this year w i t h sales to begin in early 2012.
Performance The 2012 Toyota FT-86 is rumored to come with a 2.5-liter boxer-four engine that produces 305 horsepower, which is the same engine that will be found in it’s alter-ego, the Subaru FT-86. Timing figures have yet to be released considering the car has yet to finish its development stage, but given the engine that’s housed under its hood, we’re expecting a sports coupe that can post impressive numbers for its range.

MGM eyes next Bond flick
Now that MGM’s has completed its restructuring with $500 million in fresh funding, one of the top priorities is to renew James Bond’s license to kill. The infusion of funds from the $500 million line of credit, arranged by JPMorgan, represents a vote of confidence in MGM’s prospects — particularly given its struggles in recent years, when a crushing debt load brought production to a standstill. MGM is also expected to seek a separate loan of $265 million to $275 million for its share in the back-to-back “Hobbit” movies, which begin shooting in New Zealand in February. The company, which made the announcement just recently, said its secured lenders are exchanging about $5 billion, including accrued interest and fees, for most of the equity in MGM. Spyglass Entertainment toppers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum will serve as co-chairmen and CEOs. “MGM is emerging from one of the most challenging periods of its storied history,” the duo said. “We are honored and inspired at the opportunity of leading one of Hollywood’s most iconic studios into its next generation of unforgettable filmmaking, global television production and distribution and aggressively pursuing, developing and exploiting new digital entertainment platforms.” The most likely candidate for immediate spending will be the 23rd James Bond movie, with Daniel Craig in his third outing as 007. Insiders believe MGM may turn to Sony for co-financing, as it did on “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace,” or sell off some of major foreign territories. MGM has been working up plans for a 2012 yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first Bond pic, 1962’s “Doctor No,” so the studio will probably move as quickly as possible to lock down Craig and to secure a director. Sam Mendes has long been rumored to be the leading candidate to helm. MGM hasn’t commented officially on the next Bond pic in more than a year. It announced in June 2009 that “Frost/Nixon” scribe Peter Morgan was joining with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade — who worked on “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace” — to pen the script, but development stalled after MGM brought in turnaround specialist Plenty O’Toole: Hi, I’m Plenty. Stephen Cooper later that summer. James Bond: But of course you are. Plenty O’Toole: Plenty O’Toole. James Bond: Named after your father perhaps?

Ralph Lauren’s Garage is More Awesome Than Your Garage
approved in 15 minutes!
By PhOne!
If you think that Jay Leno has an awesome garage, you obviously haven’t seen the cars in Ralph Lauren’s garage. Housing some of the rarest vehicles in the history of the world, the fashion icon’s fondness for classic vehicles is already well chronicled. But while we know about Ralph and his obsession with exotics of all shapes and sizes, we’ve yet to get a look at some of the vehicles that are all carefully restored in tiptop condition at his museum-like garage in Atlanta. Fortunately, Vanity Fair was given a tour inside the facility and, oh dear Lord, the cars inside just made our jaws drop. Ranging from classics like a 1938 Bugatti coupe and a 1938 Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia roadster to modern pieces of machinery like a Bugatti Veyron and a Lamborghini Murcielago SuperVeloce, Lauren’s garage is like a who’s who of automobile greatness. It even has the only 1930 Mercedes SSK “Count Trossi” roadster in existence. What’s more amazing is that all these cars, especially the classics, have all been maintained in ideal condition and, every so often, Ralph Lauren even takes them out for a spin. We’ve seen some pretty amazing celebrity garages in our time, including that of Jay Leno’s, but Ralph Lauren’s garage is without question the most amazing celebrity garage we’ve ever seen. ESSAY By Ivan Simic I MP
Government and Organized Crime, A History of Co-existence Lucky Luciano
Government is the governing authority of a political unit, the ruling power in a political society, and the apparatus through which a governing body functions and exercises authority. It has the authority to make laws, to arbitrate disputes, to issue administrative decisions, with a monopoly in authorizing force. A state, depending on its size, can have local, regional and national government. There are many types of governments, such as: Monarchy, Despotism, Dictatorship, Oligarchy, Plutocracy, Democracy, Theocracy, and Anarchy. A Government depending on the type can by headed by politicians, monarchs, dictators, group of people (families), wealthy class, and religious elite. History does not have the exact date of the formation of the first government, though, it holds some records of formation of the very first governments 3000 years ago.
Page 34 January 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS
Organized crime or criminal organizations are groups run by controversial individuals for the purpose of generating financial profits and social power (influence). Organized crime, however defined, is characterized by a few basic qualities including durability over time, diversified interests, hierarchical structure, capital accumulation, reinvestment, access to political protection and the use of violence to protect its interests. The best known criminal organizations are: Cosa Nostra, commonly known as Mafia, the Russian Mafia, the Japanese Yakuza, the Chinese Triads, the Colombian and the Mexican drug cartel, the Chechen Mafia, and young Mara Salvatrucha, among others. History has it, that the first sign of organized crime was seen 3000 years ago. It is important to make a distinction between organized crime (criminal organizations) and terrorist organizations, military organizations, political and paramilitary organizations, such as: Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, IRA, Irgun, among others. In relation, we should not forget the Nuremberg Trials in Germany, famous for the prosecution of the leadership of Nazi Germany. The best known was the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the InternationalMilitary Tribunal ( IMT) in 1945. In this trial, the following were indicted as criminal organizations: • The Nationalsozialismus Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDP),* *the Nazi party National Socialist German Workers Party.
John Gotti
Dollars, which is equal to what organized crime makes per year around the world. Al Capone According to history, ancient civilizations like Summer, Indus Valley Civilization, Babylon, Maya Civilization, Yellow River, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome had governments, military, laws, and crimes. The Summer Civilization had the first ever written code of law written by the ruler Urukagina, who was best known for his reforms to combat corruption. Later King Ur-Nammu wrote “the Code of Ur-Nammu”, which is oldest surviving code of law in the world. His code of law is considered remarkably advanced, and the capital crimes of murder, robbery, adultery and rape were punished with death. Many people, mostly historians believe that organized crime emerged from piracy and banditry in the 17th century, or from some famous warriors and conquers earlier. However, if we look at this ancient laws, we can see that organized crime and crime generally existed long before piracy and banditry. Even Julius Cesar was kidnapped and held prisoner in 75BC by Cilician pirates, and was later released after ransom was paid. Afterwards, Cesar raised fleet and captured the pirates, who were later imprisoned and later crucified. A pertinent historical question. So, what was formed first and what did set up the model for other; a government or organized crime? It is evident that crime and organized crime existed long before the formation of the first government. Governments implemented laws because of the criminal activities that were visible in their society. In relation to that; we can say that crime is older than the first law and government. If tree of more individuals organize themselves to commit a crime, that crime is characterized as organized crime.
• The Schutzstaffel (SS), Protective Squadron – military organization. • The Sicherheitsdienst (SD), Security Service – intelligence service of SS and NSDP. • The Gestapo, secret state police. • The Sturmabteilung (SA), Storm Division – paramilitary organization. • The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW), Supreme Command of the Armed Forces. This concept of criminal organizations was, and still continues to be controversial, and it was not used in International Human Rights Law since then. Throughout history, there has been constant struggle, but also connection between governments and organized crime. In addition, many world famous political and military leaders have been accused of running their countries like criminal organizations, for instance: Joseph Stalin,* *Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, Nicolae Ceausescu, Idi Amin Dada, Manuel Antonio Noriega Moreno, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte, among others. Top government politicians are believed to grow enormous wealth by running a kleptrocracy, a government that extends the personal wealth and political power of government officials and the ruling class at the expense of the population. Few years ago an unofficial list has been released of those believed to be the most self-enriching political leaders, top of which are: Suharto (former President of Indonesia, $15$35 billion USD), Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralín Marcos (former President of the Philippines, $5-$10 billion USD), Mobutu Sese Seko Nkuku Ngbendu wa Za Banga (former President of Zaire, $5 billion USD), among many others. What make governments and organized crime to be so connected? Governments have Head of States, leaders, military, laws, taxes, customs, punishments; governments control States and go into wars, among others. On the other side, criminal organizations (organized crime) has bosses, dons, families, soldiers, gangs, codes and outs, a protection racket and extortion, punishments. They also control territories and small cities, and also go into wars with other criminal organizations, and governments, among others. Looking at these examples we can see that there are many similarities in the structure of government and organized crime. Many governments have been involved in criminal activities trough politicians, such as: weapons sales, narcotics, international loans, confiscation of private property, and corruption. A socio-political phenomenon called “political corruption” is visible in all forms of governments, and includes extortion, nepotism, bribery, cronyism, patronage, graft and embezzlement. Global corruption is estimated at one trillion US For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

COVER STORY I MP
PINK
“Raise Your Glass” Has Pink really been around long enough to have a greatest hits album? In fact, she has. She’s been around 10 years already, actually, in which time she’s moved an impressive 34 million albums worldwide. Greatest hits albums, of course, almost always include a new track or two, a clever marketing carrot dangled before fans in the hope that they’ll pony up for yet another copy of a bunch of songs they likely already own. And “Raise Your Glass” is one of two bonus tunes on Pink’s 18-song collection. (The other new track is titled “F‑‑‑in’ Perfect.”) “Raise Your Glass” is vintage Pink. Which is to say that this particular pop-rock toast (co-written by frequent Pink collaborator and hitmeister Max Martin) is long on the rebellious, fist-in-the air attitude that

she’s built her career on. In a nutshell, Pink salutes everyone who flaunts convention, anyone who refuses to submit to the status quo: “So raise your glass if you are wrong in all the right ways,” she commands. Pink styles herself as a leader in this misfit rebellion, adding, “All my underdogs/We will never be anything but loud/And nitty-gritty, dirty little freaks.” For Pink, life is nothing more than a nonstop party, one that lasts until the wee hours of the morning (“I love when it’s all too much/5 a.m., turn the radio up/Where’s the rock ‘n’ roll?”). And she’ll party with anyone, it seems, who shares her Bacchanalian, carpe partyum perspective on seizing the moment … and seizing another drink (“What part of party don’t you
understand/Wish you’d just freak out”). In addition to drinking ‘til the spigot dries up (“My glass is empty, that sucks”), we get Pink’s usual naughty words (two f-words, one s-word, one “d‑‑n”) and coy nods to casual sex (“Party crasher/ Panty snatcher/Call me up if you a gangsta/ … Can’t stop, coming in hot/I should be locked up right on the spot”). Suggestive sexual noises come through from the background sometimes, too. That certainly raises questions about the “greatest” part in her “Greatest Hits … So Far!!!” title. Did you hear about . .
Camille Grammer to Leave ‘Real Housewives’? Season two of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” may be losing one of its more colorful players, Camille Grammer. Say it isn’t so! A source close to the production told The Hollywood Reporter that Grammer is unhappy with the way she is portrayed on the show and wants out — and has even hired a lawyer to negotiate an exit deal. The socialite’s costly divorce from actor Kelsey Grammer, for which she is reportedly demanding $50 million, has been scrutinized on the show’s freshman season, along with her unusual parenting skills, her friendships with married tennis partner Nick Stabile and real-life medium Allison Dubois, and her now infamous feud with co-star Kyle Richards. Camille’s rep, Howard Bragman, told “Extra” that the reality star “hasn’t made a decision and won’t until after the reunion show.” Will Camille leave “Real Housewives”? Will she get the $50 million? Tune in to Bravo, Thursdays at 10 PM!
Jaime Pressly in DUI Arrest Actress Jaime Pressly was pulled over January 5 on suspicion of driving under the influence, TMZ reports. The “My Name Is Earl” star was driving in Santa Monica around 11:00 PM when she was stopped after allegedly committing a traffic violation. Cops performed a sobriety test and arrested her. No drugs were found in her car.
Kim Kardashian on the Kanye West Romance Rumor Arriving to the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday with sister co-stars Khloe and Kourtney, Kim Kardashain stopped to chat with “Extra’s” Renee Bargh about being spotted with rapper Kanye West, but it was Khloe who broke the real news of the night. Kim said, “I think I’ve just been having a lot of fun,” when asked about being photographed with West. Khloe quickly interjected, “That’s because they’re doing you-know-what!” A shocked Kim responded, “That came out of Khloe’s mouth, not mine!”

ESSAY By Ivan Simic - continued from page 33 I MP
Government and Organized Crime, A History of Co-existence
It was very hard, for example, in 24 century BC to distinguish between what was right and what was wrong, however, people held something deep inside of themselves for centuries of human evolution, and that is the sense for righteousness on which civilizations were able to build their respective societies. Did governments learned from organized crime or did organized crime learned from governments? They learned from each other, governments applied some of the main principles of criminal organizations structure for the greater cause. In fact, many laws and government were made because of criminal activities. Criminal organizations followed the evolution of governments and learned to be more effective in criminal activities. Throughout history crime walked along governments, it was present in every known society, including dynasties, imperialism, colonialism, monarchism, communism, socialism, and modern democracy. In the contemporary world, criminal organizations are still successful in their business. Some governments, on the other hand, cannot distinguish themselves from organized crime because of inherent corruption and lawlessness. Today, many world governments, the United Nations and various law enforcement agencies are fighting criminal organizations and corruption, but as long as we have politicians and government officials behaving like criminals and taking bribes, criminal organizations will continue to grow.
