The Fatty Arbuckle Scandal
W
hen the world first read about the events of Sept. 3, 1920, in the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, the plotline appeared to be tabloid-headline loud and clear: during a wild party, an obese Hollywood comedy star takes advantage of a naive young actress, puncturing her bladder during forced sex; she dies a painful death of peritonitis. The star was Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, perhaps the first film actor to be paid an annual salary of $1 million, an amazing sum in the silent film industry. Insisting he had done nothing wrong, Arbuckle nevertheless went through three trials, hounded by newspapers and morality groups each time.

GLOBAL WARMING DEFINITELY A $MONEY MAKER I know, it’s very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid’s “The Green Revolution” science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cents light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs... well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days. The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere in just four days — yes — FOUR DAYS ONLY by that volcano in Iceland, has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud any one time — EVERY DAY. I don’t really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire YEARS on earth. Yes folks, Mt. Pinatubo was active for over one year, think about it. Of course I shouldn’t spoil this touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycles, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.
Professor Ian Plimer, a member of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Adelaide and a joint member of the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, could not have said it better. If you’ve read his book you will agree, this is a good summary.

And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year. Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you on the basis of the bogus “human-caused’’ climate change scenario. Hey, isn’t it interesting how they don’t mention ‘’Global Warming’’ any more, but just ‘’Climate Change?” You know why? It’s because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down. And just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme (that whopping new tax) imposed on you, that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won’t stop any volcanoes from erupting, that’s for sure. But hey, relax, give the world a hug and have a nice day! PS: I wonder if Iceland is buying carbon offsets? HAVE YOU SEEN THE SIZE OF THIS? This monster comes back from China loaded, and returns empty . . . I think there’s a problem. The Emma Maersk, part of a Danish shipping line. This is one of three ships presently in service, with another two ships commissioned to be completed in 2012. These ships were commissioned by Wal-Mart to get all their goods and stuff from China . They hold an incredible 15,000 containers and have a 207 foot deck beam!! The full crew is just 13 people on a ship longer than a U.S. aircraft carrier (which has a crew of 5,000). With it’s 207’ beam it is too big to fit through the Panama or Suez Canals. It is strictly trans-Pacific. Cruise speed: 31 knots. The goods arrive four days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run. 91% of Walmart products are made in China. So this behemoth is hugely competitive even when carrying perishable goods. The ship was built in five sections. The sections floated together and then welded.
What a ship... no wonder ‘Made in China’ is displacing North American made goods big time. This monster transports goods across the Pacific in just five days!!

Flammenwerfer: Hell on Earth in the trenches By Jon Guttman
T
he early Flammenwerfer (“flamethrower”) was terrifying though not terribly effective.) As World War I bogged down in the trenches, each side sought a means of breaking the stalemate. Germany’s first attempt was a weapon developed in secret more than a decade earlier. In 1901 Richard Fiedler rolled out a prototype of what he called a Flammenwerfer. Fiedler’s early design centered on a vertical tank divided into two compartments. The lower section held compressed gas, usually nitrogen, which forced flammable oil from the upper section through a rubber tube and past a simple ignition device in the steel nozzle. A stationary form of the weapon, the grosse Flammenwerfer, or Grof, was capable of throwing fire as far as 120 feet. Its smaller cousin the kleine Flammenwerfer, or Kleif, could project flames only half as far but was portable, small enough to be operated by two men. The German army adopted the Kleif in 1906, and by 1912 the Guard Reserve Pioneer Regiment boasted its own regiment of Flammenwerfer troops. The weapon and its units largely remained a secret, however, until the Germans finally unleashed it at Verdun on Feb. 26, 1915. Shaking off their initial terror, the French counterattacked, retook the lost ground and managed to capture a Kleif, which its weapons researchers promptly disassembled. At the Second Battle of Ypres, a half-dozen Kleif operators so terrified British soldiers on the night of July 29–30, 1915, that the Germans were able to capture several trench lines. But its material effectiveness seldom exceeded its psychological effect, as the fuel lacked a thickening agent to make it stick to its target—a shortcoming remedied by World War II. Regardless, the Allies soon developed their own versions of the weapon, canceling out what little advantage the Flammenwerfer had briefly granted its inventors.

Deployments mean many changes which can include sporadic emotional breakdowns and insomnia to eating a diet of frozen dinners, out of control carpools and even unpredictable sleeping arrangements. So after hearing a deployment is scheduled do you say, “Well this is exactly what I need right now… (insert sarcasm and expletives),” or says, “Semper Gumby right? Let me make sure we’re squared away with our paperwork and everything.” Since everyone is different there are many versions as to how you react and that is perfectly okay. I’m probably a little of both thankfully my sense of humor has kept my sanity intact on more than one occasion. Just hearing the word “deployment” sends thoughts of anger, fear, worry, stress, sleepless nights and chocolate to flood the mind. Your mind slips back to thoughts of the last deployment and recalls vividly how the burning emptiness and the immense alone numbness felt. This within itself can easily knock the ‘moto’ wind out of you. Every wife who has ever been through a deployment knows those exact feelings I’m talking about.

Some will say his absence gets easier with every deployment and maybe just it’s because you become more prepared emotionally and mentally. Just feel what you want when it happens but try to keep positive and have positive people around you quite a bit. Keep involved in the unit information loop, stay proactive with everything you can, be informed and be as prepared as possible even before the deployment arrives. If you do you’ll have a routine and are more likely to continue it after your Marine leaves. Try not to rely solely on one source of information throughout the deployment. Whether or not you choose to go home during the deployment socialize and mingle before hand with other unit wives and email them to stay in touch. Remember ladies there really is strength in numbers! Attend L.I.N.K.S. and other trainings held aboard the bases. MCCS facilitators break down everything including the Emotional Cycle of Deployments. You’ll learn about various but all normal actions and reactions during stages leading up to the stressful occurrences before, during and after a deployment. I encourage anyone who can to take their informational classes to learn from these priceless programs designed specifically for us. Awkward interview follow-ups

It can happen for a variety of reasons: Your gut tells you that this is not where you want to work, you had an uncomfortable exchange with the interviewer, or you forgot the interviewer's name altogether. Here are tips for following up after different awkward interview situations:
You Don’t Like the Hiring Manager Chemistry with your boss is pretty important if you want to be successful, and if that chemistry isn’t there, you can’t ignore it. In this situation, send a carefully worded email to the person you interviewed with. Thank him for his time and let him know you were impressed with the company. To avoid any miscommunication, convey that you don’t feel this is the right position for you. However, leave the door open for future opportunities by making it clear that you would like to be considered for other positions within the company. Never burn any bridges.
You Don’t Like the Job or Company No matter how qualified you are for the position, there will be times when you just know that you and the company are not a good match. Perhaps after learning more about the position, you decide it isn’t right for you. Or you discover after some research and the face-to-face interview that the company is not to your liking. When sending an interview thank-you letter, express gratitude for the interviewer's time and gracefully bow out of the competition for the position. You Forgot the Interviewer’s Name Somehow, you walked out of the interview neglecting to jot down notes or get a business card from the interviewer. You want to send the interviewer a personal interview thank-you note but don’t remember her name. An easy solution is to check with the recruiter, who can supply that person’s name and contact information. If a recruiter was not involved but you remember the interviewer’s title or department, call the company’s operator and ask for the person's name (and spelling). Interview, cont’d. on Page 11

In your thank-you note, acknowledge that there was some unpleasantness between the two of you prior to the interview. The key is not to get flustered. There is always a way to recover from an awkward interview so that you end up in a positive light and leave the door open for future interactions.

THE FATTY ARBUCKLE SCANDAL, 1920
W
hen the world first read about the events of Sept. 3, 1920 in the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, the plotline appeared to be tabloid-headline loud and clear: during a wild party, an obese Hollywood comedy star takes advantage of a naive young actress, puncturing her bladder during forced sex; she dies a painful death of peritonitis. The star was Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, perhaps the first film actor to be paid an annual salary of $1 million, an amazing sum in the silent film industry. Insisting he had done nothing wrong, Arbuckle nevertheless went through three trials, hounded by newspapers and morality groups each time. His movies were banned in both America and Britain. Some people even called for him to be executed. But the woman who brought the charges — a friend of the dead starlet — never testified in court because of a past record of extortion, racketeering and bigamy. Neither was the woman an eyewitness to the alleged crime. Arbuckle’s first two trials thus ended in hung juries. And the third acquitted him of all crimes. That jury even issued him an apology. But his career was over. The media pall over his reputation was impossible to overcome. The public and much of Hollywood would never forgive him; all his comeback attempts failed. Indeed, as a result of the scandal, the White House established the Hays Office as the movie industry’s moral arbiter and censor. Arbuckle died in 1933, after

Mack Sennett, when recounting his first meeting with Arbuckle, noted that he “skipped up the stairs as lightly as Fred Astaire;” and, “without warning went into a feather light step, clapped his hands and did a backward somersault as graceful as a girl tumbler.” His comedies are noted as rollicking and fast-paced, have many chase scenes, and feature sight gags. Arbuckle was fond of the famous “pie in the face,” a comedy cliché that has come to symbolize silent-film-era comedy itself. The earliest known use of this gag was in the June 1913 Keystone one-reeler A Noise from the Deep, starring Arbuckle and frequent screen partner Mabel Normand. Following his recovery, Arbuckle started his own film company, Comique, in partnership with Joseph Schenck. Although Comique produced some of the best short pictures of the silent era, in 1918 Arbuckle transferred his controlling interest in the company to Buster Keaton and accepted Paramount’s $3 million offer to make up to 18 feature films over three years. Arbuckle disliked his screen nickname, which he had been given because of his substantial girth. “Fatty” had also been Arbuckle’s nickname since school; “It was inevitable,” he said. He weighed 185 lbs. when he was 12. Fans also called Roscoe “The Prince of Whales” and “The Balloonatic.” However, the name Fatty identifies the character that Arbuckle portrayed on-screen (usually, a naive hayseed) — not Arbuckle himself. When Arbuckle portrayed a female, the character was named “Miss Fatty” (as in the film “Miss Fatty’s Seaside Lovers”). Arbuckle discouraged anyone from addressing him as “Fatty” off-screen and when they did so his usual response was, “I’ve got a name, you know.”

After British actor Charlie Chaplin joined Keystone Studios in 1914, Arbuckle mentored him. Chaplin’s most famous character, “The Tramp,” was created after Chaplin adopted Arbuckle’s trademark balloon pants, boots and tiny hat.

Buster Keaton
Arbuckle gave Buster Keaton his first film-making work in the 1917 short, “The Butcher Boy.” They soon became screen partners, with deadpan Buster soberly assisting wacky Roscoe in his crazy adventures. When Arbuckle was promoted to feature films Keaton inherited Arbuckle’s short-subject company Comique, which launched his own career as a comedy star. Arbuckle’s and Keaton’s close friendship never wavered, even when Arbuckle was beset by tragedy at the zenith of his career and through the depression and downfall that followed. In his autobiography Keaton described Arbuckle’s playful nature and his love of practical jokes, including several elaborately constructed schemes the two successfully pulled off at the expense of various Hollywood studio heads and stars.

Scott Moore, of the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines in Musa Qala, Afghanitan, last week set up a YouTube page and posted a video asking the “Friends With Benefits” star to accompany him to the Mraine Corps Ball on November 18th in Greenville, North Carolina. “Hi Mila, I just want to take a moment out of my day to invite you to the Marine Corps Ball with yours truly,” the uniformed sergeant said from his digs in Afghanistan. “So take a second to think about it and get back to me.

Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region bid farewell to its commanding general, Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey, who relinquished command to Brig. Gen. Daniel D. Yoo during a change of command ceremony held recently. Yoo was commissioned in 1985 as an infantry officer. He was previously assigned as the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Military Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in NYC.

At one point the only thought on a soldiers mind is “When will the day be over?” The next thought is “What am I going to do after work?” Our physical spaces of leisure encourage many distractions. Self motivation after long hours does not allow much desire to increase high levels of productivity. How can you utilize your down time effectively, efficiently and accordingly? Using the same technologically time consuming activities over and over is never really proficient. A recent study done by The Ministry of Community Development and Sports and Media Awareness Network, stated some of the disadvantages of playing video games, computer games and handheld electronics. Just to name a few: lack of social interaction with family and friends, games were promoting a more violent and aggressive behavior, encouraging poor eating habits and obesity also affecting attitudes towards gender types and excessive or addictive usage of gaming. Your leisure time is for self development and using this time accordingly often requires a change in behavior. It truly starts with your health and diet. Avoiding jolts of excess sugar and caffeine throughout the day can really make a difference. Products that promise lots of energy in a drink can cause sleep deprivation. No sleep equals lack of motivation and being a victim of laziness does not help in discovering what you really love while developing your intelligence. Thank you for your service By Christopher Lawrence Outreach Specialist/Group Facilitator, Warrior Traditions Program, VVSD When you’ve been in the military long enough, especially the Marine Corps, it’s apparent in everything you do. Your military service radiates: there is something in the way you walk, the power in your talk, and the things that you truly value. People can see this, and will thank you for it. This “thanks” often throws the humble service member off-kilter with an awkward silence to follow, usually ending with a “Just doing my job,” or another “Thank you.” For a while, I actually didn’t like being thanked for what I loved to do, and a few service members that I’ve spoken to didn’t either. This changed after a few conversations I had with the people that thanked me, and a little bit of thought. The United States is often referred to as a nation whose military
is at war. In many countries, when the military goes to war, the nation goes to war, but not the U.S. Not since WWII has the United States been at war; Korea was forgotten, the country went against Vietnam, and the people were indifferent to every war after. That is roughly six decades of peace for our citizens. Over these six decades, millions of Americans served their country, and became aware of the peace they allow. Along with those millions of Americans that served, came millions of children and grand children that knew the sacrifices of their family. These are very often the Americans that thank you for your service and your sacrifice. As supporting the military loses favor, and the nation’s indifference increases, these people will continue to appreciate what you have done. Remember that the people thanking you often know the price that you have paid, and are sincerely grateful.

Don’t make turning on the television the first thing you do when you
get home. Choosing a book or becoming involved in your community are definitely some healthy options. When choosing something to read don’t be afraid to not finish if what your reading bores you either. Variety is the Spice of Life! There are many causes in your community that could really use your help. Contacting your city officials or city hall can lead you in the right direction. Your work should not consume your entire existence. The career you have chosen is your life but it is not your world. Good Luck!

Jorge Hank Rhon By Josh Kun This was an article that first appeared in the L.A. Weekly back in 2006 . . . We shall continue this in future issues of The Military Press. The dogs in his driveway are only a fraction of Hank’s canine collection. He has an estimated 400. He is also said to own 600 horses, some of which he recently donated to the city police to replace patrol cars in the more unwieldy of Tijuana’s poor hillside colonias. In 1989, one of Hank’s cheetahs escaped from the zoo and was hit by a pickup truck in Tijuana traffic. Before the police could set up a crime scene, the injured animal was furtively shuttled back to the compound by Hank’s zoo guards. Hank has been open about his love for animals. “I’ve got some animal blood in me,” he told the Washington Post in 2004. In a 1997 interview with Frontline, he quipped, “I’m much more worried about the animals

As they make their way down the dirt roads of the zoo into the rush of cars on Boulevard Agua Caliente, the gates close again, and the dogs go back to being the only dogs in Tijuana that don’t bark. Being a man means surpassing the animal kingdom, to which our species belongs, and aspiring to perfection. —Carlos Hank Gonzalez in a letter to his 18-year-old son When Hank was a child in Santiago Tianguistenco, a small town in central Mexico, his father built him a zoo with ostriches, zebras, camels and hippopotamuses. The zoo was just for Hank, but it was built on the traditional land of the Matlazinca Indians, land that belonged to the town. Even back then, the line between private wealth and public interest was not one that the men of the Hank family paid much attention to. Hank’s father, Carlos Hank Gonzalez, a politician and former schoolteacher nicknamed “The Professor,” was born into poverty and never brought home a salary that topped $200,000. Yet before he died in 2001, according to an estimate by Forbes, he had amassed a fortune of more than $1.3 billion. The most iconic “dinosaur” of Mexico’s most dinosaur-friendly political party, the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), Carlos Hank lived by his infamous motto, “A politician who is poor is a poor politician.” When he was mayor of Mexico City, he was known for contracting city construction projects to companies in which he held economic interests. As secretary of agriculture under disgraced President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, many believed he helped the president and his brother, Raul, shelter their illicit fortunes in foreign accounts. Unlike his brother and father, though, Hank never made business or politics a top priority. Trained as an industrial engineer, he got involved with animal trafficking and gambling, grew his hair long, and wore a scruffy beard that looked good with his alligator-skin boots (of which he now owns more than 400 pairs). In the mid-’70s, Hank began buying giraffes and elephants, and by 1979 was co-owner of Mexico’s first major dolphin-trafficking enterprise, Convimar. According to a 1999 report by Mexican and Argentine mammal foundations, Convimar would capture dolphins in Cuba, then import them to animal parks in Mexico and South America or enlist them in traveling water-park entertainment shows.

2011 Ford Mustang ’V6 Sport Appearance’ Limited Edition Seeing as it’s home to one of the world’s biggest automakers, it goes without saying that the Japanese have a deep understanding of their cars. And yes, that includes American muscles. So it really isn’t all that surprising to find out that Ford is unveiling a special edition Mustang exclusively for citizens of the Rising Sun. The car is being packaged as the “Mustang V6 Sport Appearance” and comes with a unique color scheme with plenty of added goodies to go with it. The special Edition Mustang comes in two different color schemes, a “Performance White” version and a more retrostyled “Grabber Blue” paint finish. Both styles offer special pin stripes on both the bonnet, as well as on the side of the car. On top of that, there’s also a rear boot lid spoiler, a set of 18” chromed alloy wheels wrapped in 235/50 R18 tires,

on the interior. As for the powertrain, the Appearance, which comes in both coupe and convertible versions, boasts of a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 309 horsepower and 279 lb/ft of torque. As a special edition model, this Mustang will only be limited to 25 units for each body style. The Coupe version retails cheaper than the convertible version: 4.35 million yen to 5.05 million. Taking our calculators, that converts to about $54,250 and $63,000, respectively, which may be pretty steep considering that its American brethren retails for a lot cheaper. The 2012 Mustang 5.0 retails for about half of that price here in the US. Nevertheless, there’s a price to pay for a premium car, which is exactly what this limited edition Mustang is going to be.

2012 Ford Mustang “Blue Angels” Edition Every year, Ford rolls out a special edition one-piece Mustang for the very purpose of auctioning it off at the EAA AirVenture in July for the benefit of the EAA Young Eagles program. These babies — as with all one-off edition cars — are exceedingly rare for the very simple reason that there’s only one of them being made. This year, the one-off, aviationthemed Mustang GT was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of naval aviation. It comes with a specific blueand-yellow color scheme that takes itself from the colors of the ’Blue Angels’ fighter group with a yellow “Blue Angels” script and crest on the doors. Likewise, the crest can also be found on the interior of the car, where they are stitched into the leather Recaro seats. On top of that, Ford also upgraded the Mustang’s powertrain, improving the output of the car’s 5.0-liter V8 engine from 412 horsepower to 500 horsepower. There’s also a Ford Racing handling package, a new performance exhaust, and race-track capable brakes. Last year, Ford was able to auction off the Mustang SR-71 “Blackbird” for $375,000. Judging by the enthusiastic turn out for these events, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Mustang GT “Blue Angels” Edition hits that mark again, maybe even exceeding it. ope you had a wonderful Independence Day with family and friends and are having a great start to your summer. Expressions of gratitude inspire both the receiver as well as the giver. Being grateful for those who assist us in this life or share with us of their abundance, gives us the opportunity to recognize those blessings and receive even more. Truly, by being able to have an “attitude of gratitude,” we can have a remedy for many of our spiritual ills and emotional struggles. Life doesn’t seem so bad when you can humbly recognize how much you have. Sharing these expressions of gratitude with others, can often lighten burdens, show respect, and motivate others to do or be better. Giving thanks is a way for hearts to open – others, as well as our own. It has been said, “He who takes but never gives may last for years but never lives.” The late Edwin Arlington Robinson, distinguished American poet, once wrote of gratitude: “Two kinds of gratitude: the sudden kind we feel for what we take, the larger kind we feel for what we give.” To most of us the first kind is the more familiar: that pleasure and warmth we feel when something is given to us. But we would agree, surely, that the second gratitude, while more rare, is more wonderful. How fine we feel when we have the opportunity to brighten the life of another; we feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to show our good will and our sense of charity. 9.5 in. Let me share with you a little story that shows how these different sides of gratitude might be played out
in a day in our life. The story is entitled “Cookies.” The woman arrived at an airport one night with several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shop, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her book but happened to see, that the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between, which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene. So she munched the cookies and watched the clock, as the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock. She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I would blacken his eye.” With each cookie she took, he took one too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do. With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her half, as he ate the other, she snatched it from him and thought... ooh, brother! This guy has some nerve and he’s also rude, why he didn’t even show any gratitude! She had never known when she had been so galled, and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate. She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat, and then she sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise; there was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes. If mine are here, she moaned in despair, the others were his, and he tried to share. Too late to apologize, she realized with grief, that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief! How many times have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discov-
er later that what we believed to be true...was not? Keep an open mind and an open heart, because...You just never know... You might be eating someone else’s cookies. The important thing to remember is that there are so many others who bless and touch our lives daily. I know that we have all been very blessed, but it takes eyes to see, ears to hear and then mouths to express that gratitude and brighten the lives of all involved. It has been said, “The depth of our gratitude is the depth of our understanding.” Let us not forget the true giver of all our blessings. The one who may prompt another to stop by when we are down and who hears our simply prayers and blesses us with the most appropriate answer. If only we would but turn to Him to ask, is our perfectly loving God. May our understanding create volumes of loving history, is my prayer this week. Chevrolet has announced details on the new 2011 Caprice police car that will be used in police agencies across the country. The new model is powered by a 6.0 liter V-8 engine that delivers a total of 355 HP and 384 lb-ft torque. It is one of the fastest police cars out there with a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of under six seconds. This is one of the most entertaining action packed war films ever made with a tremendous cast playing unique characters. I first saw this film when I was about 8 year old and thought it was the best thing I’d seen on TV. Lee Marvin heads the cast as an unorthadox, short on discipline rebellious Major during World War II whose given a suicidal mission by a bunch of Generals headed by the excellent Ernest Borgnine. He must take 12 convicts train them and take them on a mission behind enemy lines to destroy a large chateau and kill a large number of important German officers who’ll be partying there that night. The films explosive climax is fantastic as you know inevitably that not everyone will survive the mission and by now you’ve sort of chosen who your favourite characters are. The build up and the training scenes are also brilliant as you discover the backgrounds behind these violent criminals.

It’s Marvin’s show but John Cassavettes is superb as Victor Franco, in fact with a supporting cast featuring Robert Ryan, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, George Kennedy and Clint Walker you know you’re in for a great ride, nobody is wasted. There’s a lot of humour mixed with quite serious issues...you sometimes forget that this band of jokers are killers with only one chance to survive a mission they are hardly trained for. This classic is on par with The Great Escape and Where Eagles Dare, Three inferior TV movies were made in the mid eighties which basically take the same idea from the original but they are obviously no match. It’s available on video and DVD and every home should have a copy. Flawless.

The impact of the Great Depression on American sports By George Greene, Boston Sports History Examiner
The Great Depression certainly had an impact on the sports industry in America. American sports were able to weather the the Depression of the 30’s far better than most other segments of the economy. In those years cities wondered if they could continue their stadium-building projects. In Los Angeles, which had won the right to host the 1932 Olympics and was in the process of expanding its municipal Coliseum to seat 105,000, experienced mounting public sentiment to scrap the entire project. 1933 was the grimmest year for baseball during the Great Depression. In Florida, players came to spring training with just the clothes on their backs, hoping a club would sign them. Some came without gloves and spikes. Many were starving. A few collapsed on the field from hunger. When Roosevelt became president, sports in America looked bleak. Unemployment went as high as twenty five percent and few people could afford to attend games. Baseball, the reigning king of sports in America, had a total attendance of eleven million in 1933 compared to seventeen million in 1929. That same year the Cincinnati Reds declared bankruptcy. Nearly all sixteen teams were thrown into receivership with the Reds, St. Louis Browns, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Boston Braves in the worst shape. Players had their pay cut by about twenty five percent, but they were lucky. The average wage for the American worker fell fifty percent. A player making $3,000 in 1932 was still making twice as much as the typical industrial worker. Americans continued to care about sports as much as ever. Fans could get rid of their concerns about their families and financial straights for a couple of hours to listen to a baseball game on the radio. This was a very big deal for millions of Americans who continued to follow their teams. The most popular baseball team was the St. Louis Cardinals. They were a bunch of hard-scrapping working-class guys who reminded men and women of themselves. The Public Works Administration spent $40 million on athletic facilities. Between 1935 and 1941, the WPA spent about $1 billion on various recreation and sports facilities. The WPA alone had more than 40,000 sports and recreation projects. It remains to be seen whether President Obama will do the same as FDR with sports and recreation facilities. Only

Sports News CAMP PENDLETON’S TOP SURFERS TO BATTLE IT OUT AT “RED BULL RIVALS” East Coast Marines surfers and West Coast Marines surfers to Compete at Del Mar Beach Resort WHAT: Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting the U.S. Militaries rivalry between Marine Corps. boot camps, West Coast trained MCRD Marines and East Coast trained Paris Island Marines, against each other. Ten surfers from each coast’s boot camp will battle it out in a head-to-head surf competition for ultimate bragging rights. Red Bull Rivals will be the held at Camp Pendleton, and will be open for viewing to those with base access. Instead of a traditional prize purse, the teams will compete for each others’ surfboards used in the competition (similar to racing for pink slips) and, of course, the winning team will earn the ultimate bragging rights. Unique to this contest, the surfers will compete in a tag team format, where one surfer from the East and one from the West will enter the water together and surf their best three waves. They will then run to shore and tag a teammate to go out and do the same; judges will score the best two waves of the three for each surfer and at the end of the day the team with the most points wins. The losing team must give up their surfboards to the winning team. WHO: Twenty of Camp Pendleton’s top surfers, trying to win the ultimate bragging rights for their respective boot camps.
