e know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington, DC, filled to capacity by many of America’s finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, “Mexifornia,” explaining how immigration — both legal and

illegal — was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream. Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America. The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the destruction of the United States. He said, “If you believe that America is too smug, too self-satisfied,

too rich, then let’s destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise and fall and that “An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide7

Insanity has been defined as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” If a project you took on at work failed miserably, and you were told to do the same thing in the same way again, would you think that was great leadership? If you knew a better way to do things, wouldn’t you have a duty to speak up? That’s the situation facing us in Washington, D.C. right now. The Democrats spent $787 billion in a “stimulus” package in order to have the government “create” jobs. They failed. Unemployement has risen — and is now at 9.1%. So, what’s the Democrats’ Plan B? That’s right:

A man, who did not identify himself, told the clerk, “There’s trouble in Room 100.” The clerk sent a bellboy to check it out, but before he returned, the front desk received another call, this one from Room 100. “Someone is sick,” a different male voice said. “Need help.”

Corps unveils new re-enlistment procedure By Lance Cpl. Joene Bopp The U.S. Marine Corps recently introduced new re-enlistment procedures that officials say will help retain only the most qualified Marines while still meeting manpower requirements. “New re-enlistment procedures will affect fiscal year 2012 first-term alignment plan Marines and any Marines after FY12,” said Gunnery Sgt. Spence, career planner, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “The procedures are scheduled to begin in June.” The first step is to expand the re-enlistment submission time frame to 90 days beginning July 1 and ending Sept. 30, allowing a greater opportunity for Marines to submit for re-enlistment. After a Marine turns in the package, the next step is the commander’s evaluation. A four-tiered system will replace the traditional evaluation: • Tier one — Eminently Qualified Marine: These Marines go above and beyond what is expected. They can complete assignments in an accurate and timely manner, including difficult or unusual assignments. • Tier two — Highly Competitive Marine: These Marines do excellent work but may need help with extremely difficult or unusual assignments. • Tier three — Competitive Marine: This Marine can complete regular tasks thoroughly.

• Tier four — Below Average Marine: Marines may or may not meet minimum standards. “The tiers will allow Marines to be evaluated more in depth on everything including how effectively they can execute assignments,” said Spence. Once the tiers are evaluated, determination of targeted re-enlistment begins. The goal is to identify Marines who are possibly over-qualified for

their current military occupational specialty. They could be offered a lateral move to a highly technical MOS the Marine Corps may have problems filling. The final step is quality Marine identification, which allows commanding generals to request qualified Marines to go above personnel capacity for the Marine Corps. These requests are then processed through HQMC the same way

as any other waiver. Now, if you are a great Marine, you are given that chance.

Awards show goody bags gifted to military families

If you’re a big fan of awards shows, you’ve no doubt heard of the infamous gift bags celebrities get for just showing up to the Golden Globe Awards and associated parties. These bags contain all sorts of expensive items – like jewelry, electronics, even gift certificates for surgery. According to Yahoo! OMG, the 2010 Golden Globe swag bags contained gifts worth more than $91,000. There are also the lower-end gift bags, still worth about $500, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organizers of the Golden Globes) are giving away $275,000 worth of those unclaimed goody bags from the 2011 awards to military families, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The HFPA donated the bags to a non-profit group called The Fisher House, which provides lodging for military families whose loved ones are hospitalized on base. HFPA president Phillip Berk told the Hollywood Reporter: “What little we do is absolutely miniscule in importance compared to the sacrifice they have made; we’re trying to do a small bit to show our appreciation for the servicemen.” Berk says he anticipates the annual SWAG donations to The Fisher House will be an ongoing event.

Airlines cut fees for military baggage

Three more airlines have joined Delta in changing their checked baggage fee policies, after two soldiers made a video expressing their outrage at the fees — and that video went viral. The Department of Defense announced last week United Airlines, American Airlines, and Continental Airlines (along with Delta) are increasing the number of bags active-duty servicemembers can check without charge. Home Post San Diego blogged yesterday about Army Staff Sgts. Fred Hilliker and Robert O’Hair, who were so angered by being charged for their fourth bag (filled with Army equipment) that they shot a video while flying from Baltimore to Atlanta. (The men were on their way home from a deployment in Afghanistan.) They posted their video on YouTube, and from there it caught fire. According to a DoD news release, Delta, Continental, and United airlines will now allow active-duty troops to check as many as four bags without charging a fee. American Airlines’ new policy allows troops to check up to five bags without fees, whether they are flying on duty or for personal reasons. American spokesman Tim Smith explains: “[G]iven the potential confusion, with different military units carrying different amounts of bags depending on their mission, we have elected to proceed with our five-free-bag limit. We think it just makes good sense and eliminates possible confusion.” Pentagon officials say servicemembers are virtually always reimbursed for checked baggage fees when they fly on official business.

tacking a patient. Women were rarely the perpetrators but often the victims, the report says. Of the patient-on-patient assaults, men were the perpetrators and women the victims in 46 cases, while men attacked men in 42 cases. There was one allegation of a female patient assaulting a male patient. “Patient and employee safety and security are paramount,” said VA spokesperson Josh Taylor. “We are taking steps to expand and improve our reporting of allegations to provide more secure facilities for our patients,” he said.

“My jaw dropped when the doctors told me that 41 percent of the female veterans seen there say they were victims of sexual assault while serving in the military,” said Sen. Jane Harman, D-California, who has long sought better protection of women in the military. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who chairs the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said the number of sexual assaults shows “an intolerable breakdown in VA’s duty to safeguard our veterans.” “The report shows the VA has serious work to do to provide basic patient safety for thousands of women veterans who are turning to VA for care — including the invisible wounds of war. The VA needs to act immediately to make real changes to its security procedures to protect against these types of assaults and to ensure they are being reported properly.”

Some vets allowed to use medical marijuana

By Al Byrne In the current patchwork of medical marijuana laws and regulations across the country, clinical cannabis use is not decided by the military patients’ need for medicine, but rather where they live. This practice is, of course, totally illogical. That vets are not being treated for their injuries properly is not surprising to me, a Vietnam vet. Treatment by geography can be looked on as a win for some Vets. Before this protocol was adopted by the Veterans Health Administration, in July of 2010, there was no cannabis allowed medicinally for any service member. The change in policy, VHA Directive 2010-035, allows those vets who live in states where cannabis is legally available to use their medicine without fear of losing cherished and earned benefits. The caveat is that they cannot possess or use cannabis on federal property and may only medi-

cate for symptoms approved by their state of residence. Veterans for Common Sense found that more than half of all Iraq and Afghanistan vets treated in the VA hospitals since 2002 have been diagnosed (at least preliminarily) with mental health problems. Those making these decisions are, in effect, practicing medicine without a license. They are law enforcement, lawyers and lobbyists. They are not MDs or RNs and often have little grasp of modern medicine’s discovery of the endocannabinoid system universal to all mammals and essential to life. Most are equally ignorant of the worldwide science concerning cannabis. We hear every day how Americans should support our troops. The time has come to give them the support they really deserve when it comes to medicinal cannabis.

Military History

The Battle of Midway, fought over and near the tiny U.S. mid-Pacific base at Midway atoll, represents the strategic high water mark of Japan’s Pacific Ocean war. Prior to this action, Japan possessed general naval superiority over the United States and could usually choose where and when to attack. After Midway, the two opposing fleets were essentially equals, and the United States soon took the offensive. Japanese Combined Fleet commander Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto moved on Midway in an effort to draw out and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s aircraft carrier striking forces, which had embarrassed the Japanese Navy in the mid-April Doolittle Raid on Japan’s home islands and at the Battle of Coral Sea in early May. He planned to quickly knock down Midway’s defenses, follow up with an invasion of the atoll’s two small islands and establish a Japanese air base there. He expected the U.S. carriers to come out and fight, but to arrive too late to save Midway and in insufficient strength to avoid defeat by his own well-tested carrier air power. Yamamoto’s intended surprise was thwarted by superior American communications intelligence, which deduced his scheme well before battle was joined. This allowed Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, to establish an ambush by having his carriers ready and waiting for the Japanese. On 4 June 1942, in the second of the Pacific War’s great carrier battles, the trap was sprung. The perseverance, sacrifice and skill of U.S. Navy aviators, plus a great deal of good luck on the American side, cost Japan four irreplaceable fleet carriers, while only one of the three U.S. carriers present was lost. The base at Midway, though damaged by Japanese air attack, remained operational and later became a vital component in the American trans-Pacific offensive.

ust how bad has the Democrats’ stimulus failed? Obama’s threatened “worst case scenario” for jobs if his Stimulus plan weren’t passed would have actually been better than the reality. This means according to the White House’s own prediction their stimulus killed jobs, and now the Democrats want to pile more failure on top of failure. Spending an astonishing amount of your tax dollars hasn’t worked, so now they want to try more of the same. Unemployment was high when President Ronald Reagan took office, but he didn’t solve it by spending his way out of it. He wanted to try something different: fiscal responsibility and lowered tax rates. At the time, we were assured by Democrats and the media told us that Reagan was crazy. How did his plan work out? Unemployment fell to 5.3% under his leadership, and it kicked off an era of prosperity that lasted a generation in this country. But Democrats either don’t get that, or ignore it. They want to continue to burden our children and grandchildren by raising the staggering debt

ceiling above $14.3 trillion. President Obama’s failure to lead on this issue and the Democrats’ lack of fiscal restraint got us into this mess. We can’t spend our way out of it now. What ‘We the People’ want to hear, is how can any party, Democrat or Republican get us out of this mess we are in ? Our next edition of the Military Press will feature a few of our suggestions . . . we’d like to hear yours! Please send any of your suggestions to rmatz@militarypress.com.

Celebrity Crimes

Punk rock Romeo and Juliet: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen By Anthony Bruno / trutv.com

The Sid Vicious Story: “Trouble in Room 100” In the meantime, the bellboy entered Room 100 and found the scantily clad, bloodsmeared body of a 20-year-old woman in the bathroom. The platinum blonde lay face-up on the floor, her head under the sink. She wore only a black bra and panties, both items soaked with blood from a one-inch knife wound in her lower abdomen. The bed was also extensively stained with blood. The desk clerk called for an ambulance which arrived with a police escort. After the paramedics confirmed the woman was dead, police checked the room and found drugs and drug paraphernalia as well as a blood-stained Jaguar K-11 folding knife with a five-inch blade and a black jaguar carved into the handle. The victim had been living in Room 100 with her drug-addicted boyfriend whom police located in the hallway soon after their arrival. The couple had been living in Manhattan’s famous bohemian haven, the Chelsea Hotel, which at various times had hosted such illustrious guests as Eugene O’Neill, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Wolfe, Jane Fonda, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, among many others. The couple had registered as Mr. and Mrs. John Ritchie, though they were not married. John Simon Ritchie was the man’s real name,

but he was better known as Sid Vicious, punk superstar and former bass player for the infamous British band, the Sex Pistols. His deceased companion’s name was Nancy Spungen, a.k.a. “Nauseating Nancy.” Vicious was wandering the hallways, crying and agitated, when police arrived. His face was battered, but the bruising indicated that the beating had happened some time before police arrived. When his next-door neighbor came out of her room to see what was going on, Vicious reportedly said to her, “I killed her...I can’t live without her.” He was also heard muttering through his tears, “She must have fallen on the knife.” A known heroin addict, Vicious was obviously high. Officers attempted to arrest him, but he resisted. Police subdued him and put him in handcuffs. Later that afternoon he was charged with second-degree homicide in the death of Nancy Spungen. (In New York first-degree homicide is reserved for the killings of police and court officers in the line of duty.) The news of Spungen’s death and the murder charge against Vicious reverberated through the ranks of young

people who defiantly called themselves “punks.” Vicious’ many fans saw him as nothing less than the embodiment of the punk philosophy—aggressively nihilistic and intentionally rude and offensive in all situations. His physical appearance underscored his beliefs — dyed spiked hair, railthin body, knock-kneed posture, worn black-leather motorcycle jacket, and his trademark dog chain and padlock around his neck. Punk was the antithesis of civilized middle-class values. Doing drugs, wearing tattered clothes and safety pins in facial piercings, living in squalor, and never paying more than a dollar for anything were not just lifestyle choices, they were part of the punk ethos. Spungen and Vicious had come to New York and the Chelsea Hotel in particular to enhance their status as punk royalty. But in the end they became the stuff of tragedy, the punk Romeo and Juliet.

Three liquids that halt hunger

Keep that hefty appetite firmly under control by making these three liquids part of each day: skim milk, H 2O, and olive oil. That’s right. Studies suggest that these three fab fluids may keep hunger at bay, reduce calorie intake, and keep the pounds from creeping on.

Skim milk: In a study, the people who drank about 20 ounces of skim milk at breakfast ate way less at lunch compared with the people who had fruit juice with their morning meals. The researchers think the proteins in skim milk — whey and casein — may help make skim milk quite the filler-upper.

Getting straight to the core By Lance Cpl. Jacob D. Osborne When most Marines want to improve their running performance, they run. When they want to build strength and muscle in their chest, they bench press. What most people may overlook is their core. A person’s core is the foundation for the entire body. In order to build muscle, a Marine must strengthen the core. There’s no other way around it. “I have seen people come into my gym and just work their core and within a month their running, weightlifting and just about everything else improved immensely,” said Randy Edwards, a trainer and the owner of The Gym in Dallas. Generally, when someone hears the term core, they think of six pack abs, but there is more. Core training targets all of the muscles along the torso that stabilize the spine and pelvis, which in turn supports the rest of the body, said Edwards. “People consider core as the center of the body,” said Remy Kim, a personal trainer at Sport and Health in Arlington, Va. “Core actually ranges from the hamstrings and the glutes to your upper back.” Core, being one of the most important muscle groups, is also one of the easiest to strengthen. The majority of core exercises don’t require weights or special equipment, but can be done anywhere with a little initiative and know-how. “There are infinite amounts of core exercises,” said Cory Miller, a fitness trainer at Fitness First in Arlington, Va. “You can do crunches, sit-ups, variations of supermans, planks, leg lifts and more.” Marines are athletes. They run, swim, jump and do everything athletes do, just in a combat environment. “The best exercise to work the entire core is really any workout that requires you to be in the plank position, and being in the plank position and using a stability ball uses almost every core muscle in your body,” said Kim. Once the core has been strengthened, developing upper and lower body will be safer because of the strong foundation that has been built.

Olive oil:

This Mediterranean staple is loaded with a hunger-curbing compound called oleic acid. This monounsaturated fat stimulates the small intestine to make another fatlike substance that sends “full” signals from the stomach to the brain. Other foods high in oleic acid include sunflower seeds, canola oil, safflower oil, almonds, and avocados.

Water: Numerous studies suggest that folks who drink ample water feel fuller and eat

far fewer calories throughout the day compared with people who don’t drink enough agua. Water drinkers are also less likely to indulge in sweetened drinks like soda, calorie-laden coffee drinks, and sugary sports drinks. And in yet another study, drinking 16 ounces of water before each meal helped dieters lose more weight —and lose it faster — than dieters who didn’t drink water

How to

America

Wherever you stand politically, please take the time to read this.... it ought to scare the pants off you! “Here is how they do it,” Lamm said: “FIRST, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country.” History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: “The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.” Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided.. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans.” Lamm went on: SECOND, to destroy America, “Invent ‘multiculturalism’ and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.”

14 June 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

THIRD, “We could make the United States an ‘Hispanic Quebec’ without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: “The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.” Lamm said, “I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities.” “FOURTH, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school.” “My FIFTH point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of ‘Victimology.’ I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population.” “My SIXTH plan for America ‘s downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress

“Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid.” – John Wayne differences rather than similarities. Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other — that is, when they are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their liberty. Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. “E. Pluribus Unum” --From many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the ‘pluribus’ instead of the ‘Unum,’ we will balkanize America as surely as Kosovo.” “Next to last, SEVENTH, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of ‘diversity.’ I would find a word similar to ‘heretic’ in the 16th century — that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobe’ halt discussion and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of ‘Victimology,’ I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them.” In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said,. “Lastly, EIGHTH, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis’s book “Mexifornia.” His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America . If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don’t read that book.” There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically, quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today. Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as we celebrate ‘diversity.’ American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations create a Third World in America — take note of California and other states — to date, ten million illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell’s book “1984.” In that story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: “War is peace,” “Freedom is slavery,” and “Ignorance is strength.” Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don’t get this immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy everything in its path especially The American Dream. (Richard D. Lamm was a Democrat who served as governor of Colorado for 12 years from 1975 to 1987. Of the abovequoted third person account regarding his speech on the perils of multiculturalism, Lamm said in mid-June 2005, “Yes, it is a speech I gave a year and a half ago in Washington, D.C. It was a five-minute speech, and I am amazed and gratified it has received so much coverage.) ‘La Dolce Vita’

“FREDERICO FELLINI’S movies transport you to another level of life; a little depressing maybe, a little scary, but filled with terrible beauty, style and always a moral confrontation.” 2011 New York celebrates 1960’s ‘La Dolce Vita’ By Liz Smith That was Martin Scorsese introducing Fellini’s great 1960 epic, “La Dolce Vita” the other night in Manhattan. Scorsese also revealed that once, while talking with filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, Bertolucci confessed that it was “La Dolce Vita” that convinced him he had to pursue a life making movies! Despite humidity that hit like a boxer overdosed on steroids, the screening, hosted by Gucci, The Film Foundation and The Cinema Society was packed. People even dressed up a little. (Well, come on — it’s a classic movie. It deserves at least a jacket.) Not even a tornado warning was going to keep dedicated cinephiles away. Actually, the tornado warning was a topic of conversation, with many exclaiming, “Exciting, isn’t it?” These people did not recognize themselves, as Fellini’s tale of shallow stupidity in designer clothes unfolded onscreen. 9.5 in. “La Dolce Vita” holds up, now in beautifully restored condition. It’s still three hours, but it is three

incredible hours. The wonder of the plotless, episodic movie is that it retains your interest, though there is nary a morally attractive person in the film. The decay, the corruption, the hypocrisy, the ennui and disillusioned awakenings (which end with helpless shrugs or suicide and murder) fire the film from beginning to end. Just try to look away. Marcello Mastroianni is splendid as the celebrity journalist adrift and increasingly desperate. Anita Ekberg, doing her voluptuous pastiche on Marilyn and Jayne, is amusing (“I like lots of things, but there are three things I like most ... love, love and love!”) Yvonne Furneaux as Marcello’s wildly possessive lover is pathetically moving. (“I reject your aggressive, sticky maternal love! This isn’t love, it’s brutalization!” he shouts at her, as she demands his loyalty.) But the best is the fabulous French star Anouk Aimee who straightened every back in the theater, each time she appeared onscreen. There’s also great (and rather grim) fun to be found in the character played by Walter Santesso. He is the leader of a heartless rat pack of photographers who push and shove and intrude and incite trouble constantly. The character’s name? Paparazzo.

Norway, rape and multi-culturalism By Jamie Glazov Muslim rape epidemic in sweeping over Europe — and over many other nations host to immigrants from the Islamic world. The direct connection between the rapes and Islam is irrefutable, as Muslims are significantly overrepresented among convicted rapists and rape suspects. The Muslim perpetrators themselves boast that their crime is justified since their victims were, among other things, not properly veiled. What is the psychology here? What is the significance of this epidemic? And how do we face it when our own feminists, with a few exceptions, are deafeningly silent about it? To discuss this issue with us today, we are joined by Peter Raddatz, a German scholar of Islamic Studies and the co-author of the renowned “Encyclopaedia of Islam.” He is the author of many books, including From Allah to Terror? Jihad and the Western Deformation, Allah’s Veil and The Turkish Danger. In a few months he will publish World Risk Iran. A man sees a woman and she is not veiled. He thinks to himself: “Oh, I must rape her now.” No matter how much I try to figure this out, I can’t. What’s the mindset here? If a person is upset that a wom-

A

an is not veiled, it implies he wants some kind of supposed “morality.” But if he is thirsting for purity, how does perpetrating a violent sexual atrocity against the “immoral” one fit into moralizing her and the rest of society – and himself? Peter’s take on this issue: Your questions concerning mindset and morals put us right into the middle of the problem. They are the terms any culture’s collective psychology is basing on. In the case of prevailing orthodox Islam we are faced with a deep division between the sexes. With Allah’s unlimited ruling license the males are entitled to be the masters of the females. The Koranic order says that the man has to “go to the woman” whenever he likes, to “enjoy her however he likes,” and to discipline her in case she develops her own ideas like sexual self-determination. Over the centuries this basic frame had been filled with a lot of “prophetic” instructions as to what disastrous role the woman could play if the man as Allah’s deputy does not carry out this divine license of fertilizing control. Insofar the woman is looked upon from a “higher” biologistic viewpoint regarding her as “seed field” that — under strict male surveillance signaled by “Islamic correct” veiling —

guarantees for the continued survival and expansion of Islam. We are dealing here with premodern, partly archaic thinking that divides its world into two Manichaean halves. Irrespective of the usual statistical remnant of liberal “dissidents,” the orthodox ideology bases on an Islamic half that accords to Koran and “prophetic” tradition and a non-Islamic half consisting of unbelievers and disobedient women. The religious war — known as “jihad” — against the latter two groups belongs, therefore, to the most prominent duties of the “believing” Muslim. Its “religious” dimension is boosted enormously by customary family “honor” installing male control from early youth on, often widening into brutal raping, sometimes incestuous punishing patterns. Here a complicated interaction between father, mother, son and daughter comes into play about which, I guess, Dr. Kobrin will give us quite interesting insights. Thus, the ontological being in Islam is not defined by individual right but clearly as integral part of the community in terms of a whole and “holy” entirety. In this context the primary form of human being is seen in the male that assumes the right and duty to assist Allah in conserving and expanding his “umma,” meaning his community. Its biologistic “thinking” demands the “pure” man as the real human

be

dominating the “impure” woman as a lower form, rather close to some animal-like existence. Therefore, sexuality cannot be sublimated and has to serve — aside from ramifications into homo-, paedo- and sodo-variants — a basic double function: fertilizing and punishing. This paradigm expresses itself not only in highly standardized family patterns but also in an equally conformistic education system. By the same token, however, and this is the core of “modern” Islam’s tragedy, the male controllers are confined to physical methods of “sublimation” whenever problems arise. Aside from the usual bombing “protest” against Western “arrogance” and “unbelieving morals,” the current rape wave is the vital expression of an ongoing jihad against women who under Western influence may drift slowly out of the grip of male Muslim hands.

Don’t get your hopes up, Mav fans By Bill Hazel

G

oing into the 2011 NBA Finals, we should all be clear on two things: who the favorite is, and who the sentimental favorite is. Note, these are not the same team and I shouldn’t have to point out which is which here. Rooting for the Miami Heat is akin to rooting for Darth Vader simply because both are incredibly powerful, entertaining to watch, and look badass in their black unis. Surely, while LeBron James has in fact turned to the dark side by taking his talents to South Beach to pursue his championship ring, Dirk Nowitzki has remained one of the few players to remain with the same team for well over a decade since the beginning of his NBA career in 1998. Through this time, Dirk has seen perpetual mediocrity, ownership change hands to the boisterous Mark Cuban, and close friend and fellow great Steve Nash come and go. He has reached one NBA Finals, which his Mavs lost to this same Heat team, and he has seen countless other postseason disappointments that fell well short of expectations.

We’ve heard this story many times before in sports. The aging great still without a ring, knowing his window is closing and hoping that perhaps this one last shot will be the one that propels him to glory. It’s a subplot strong enough to put a lump in a real sports fans throat, and yet... I just cannot see any way the Mavs pull this out. I hate to disappoint fans of the underdog, fans of the likable heroes, but Miami has too much firepower and plays too much defense. While Dallas has been heralded for playing much more solid consistent defense in this year than in the past, they have accomplished that in the Western Conference, which is more known for a speed and fastbreak game than the more physical East. As such, this does not reach the level of defense Miami has been playing throughout the playoffs any time they need to amp up the difficulty. Only once all postseason did any team score over 100 on Miami. While Dirk has surrounded himself this year with a great deal of talent, from old standby Jason Terry to athletic forwards Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion to the outside shooting of Peja Stojakovic, and veteran point guard leadership of Jason Kidd, these are all still role players in comparison to Dirk, who remains their only star

and main go-to option at the end of a close game. Dirk has played magnificently in this postseason, and yet it seems he could continue to be magnificent and still fall short. This is because Dwyane Wade, James, and Chris Bosh, just as everyone had feared since the preseason, are firing on all cylinders together, and you can’t be certain where the big basket is coming from. LeBron has had the propensity to take over the final two minutes of any game (would you prefer me to cite Game 5 against Boston, or Game 5 against Chicago?), emerging as the top dog, while Wade and Bosh have not disappointed, either, making clutch shots and stops down the stretch, as well. This brings me to my next point. Miami has eliminated the perception of them as unable to close out games late or make clutch shots that haunted them throughout the regular season. This manifested itself most against Chicago, culminating in a last-second home loss to the Bulls in which ESPN announcer Mike Tirico shouted memorably, “The Miami Heat don’t close again!” This game’s final seconds featured misses of awkward, low-percentage shots from both James and Wade that seem light years short of anything they would attempt now.

Humor do you know that you’re Napoleon?” The second responds, “God told me I was.” At this point, a patient on the other side of the room shouts, “NO I DIDN’T!” God responded, “ I like the way you think, come and sit at my right hand”. God then turned to Bill Gates, who was staring at him indignantly. God asked “What is your problem Bill Gates?” Bill responded “ I think you are sitting in my chair”.

Confused People In a psychiatrist’s waiting room two patients are having a conversation. One says to the other, “Why are you here?” The second answers, “I’m Napoleon, so the doctor told me to come here.” The first is curious and asks, “How

Damaging Food A dietician was once addressing a large audience in Chicago. “The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Vegetables can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the germs in our drinking water. But there is one thing that is the

most dangerous of all and we all of us eat it. Can anyone here tell me what lethal product I’m referring to? You, sir, in the first row, please give us your idea.” The man lowered his head and said, “Wedding cake.

Clinic’s Name Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other, “Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?” “Outstanding,” Fred replied. “They taught us all the latest psychological techiniques - visualization, association - it made a huge difference for me.” “That’s great! What was the name of the clinic?” Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn’t remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, “What do you call that red flower with the long stem and thorns?” “You mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s it!” He turned to his wife. . .”Rose, what was the name of that clinic?”

Ficticious Characters Just before Christmas, an honest politician, a generous lawyer and Santa Claus were riding in the elevator of a very posh hotel. Just before the doors opened they all noticed a $20 bill lying on the floor. Which one picked it up? Santa of course, because the other two don’t exist!

Warning: New ‘unfunded’ bennies can hurt vets dollars needed for other services veterans already rely on. Recent bills enacted that weren’t fully paid for included the important caregiver law for families of the most seriously disabled veterans and expansion of female veterans’ health benefits, including single parent childcare services, at VA medical facilities. Joseph Violante, legislative director for Disabled American Veterans, raised the touchy issue Wednesday at a hearing of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee where lawmakers and lobbyists considered the merits of 35 new bills aimed at helping veterans. Violante acknowledged that delegates to DAV’s own convention last August passed numerous resolutions in support of a lot of the bills now before the committee or even enacted into law late last year.

By Tom Philpott

T

hrough a decade of war, Congress has pumped billions of additional dollars into new benefits and programs for veterans. They deserve them, lawmakers say. Helping vets also is popular with constituents. Veterans’ service organizations have lobbied for these benefits, but with the expectation that newly authorized programs would be fully funded. Last year, even as the once-steady stream of extra dollars for the Department of Veterans Affairs slowed to a trickle, lawmakers continued to add new programs. Veteran groups are getting nervous. They worry that VA, burdened with new “unfunded mandates,” has no other choice but to launch these new programs and pay for them by dipping into

“However, as Congress considers authorizing new programs or enhancing or expanding current programs,” he warned, “it is essential that they do so in manner that does not have negative effects on existing programs and services. In today’s economic environment, VA cannot be all things to all veterans, and their families and survivors, without obtaining substantially more resources, which are dependable and stable.” New committee chairman Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) opened the hearing by touting her bills to lower veterans’ unemployment (S 951), and expand assistance to homeless veterans through improved grants, per diem, health care and case management services (S 1148). Ranking Republican, Sen. Richard Burr (N.C.), advocated for his bill (S.

277) to extend eligibility for VA hospital care, medical services and nursing home care to as many as 600,000 veterans and family members stationed at Camp Lejeune during years well water there was contaminated. Another Burr bill (S 423) would incentivize veterans to help deal with the backlog of claims by allow VA to pay disability benefits retroactively, for up to one year before a claim is filed, if the submitted claim is deemed “fully developed” to allow a swift decision. VA opposes the bill. VSOs had mixed reactions. Raymond Kelley with Veterans of Foreign War said VFW likes the concept but sees a few problems including possible legal liability for VSO service officers who help to develop veterans’ claims. Burr was the only senator at the hearing to acknowledge the looming national debt crisis, noting that the bills under consideration “would collectively spend billions of dollars” even as the country faces “staggering deficits and debt and is on a fiscal path that is simply unsustainable.” So the committee must weigh affordability in deciding what bills to approve during mark-up at the end of June. Burr added, however, that government auditors believe by ending “overlap” in federal programs current services could improve and still save taxpayers billions of dollars a year. VA officials testified at the hearing that Murray’s Hiring Heroes Act would cost the department only $65 million over 10 years. And a popular bill from Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Me.), to protect the solemnity of veteran funerals antigay protestors, would cost taxpayers nothing at all. But Burr’s bill to allow retroactive effective dates of disability awards for veterans whose claims are deemed fully developed when submitted would cost $762 million over ten years. His bill to extend VA hospital care and health services to Marine Corps and Navy veterans and their families assigned to Lejeune from 1957 until 1987, and therefore possibly exposed to contaminated water, would cost $4 billion over the first decade. Retired Marine Master Sergeant Jerry Ensminger testified that his daughter, Janey, born while the family was assigned to Camp Lejeune, died of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1985 when nine years old. He blames chemicals found later in the tap water there, including two known carcinogens, benzene and vinyl chloride. He said the Marine Corps and Navy Department knew about the contamination for several years but failed to act. He referred other potential victims to a website, www.tftptf.com, for more details. Ensminger said more than 170,000 members of the Camp Lejeune community have registered with the Marine Corps as having been exposed to the water at Lejeune sometime during the 30 year period. In opposing the bill, VA cited numerous concerns including the “underlying scientific evidence” behind claims of contamination exposure. Boycotting the NFL Draft don’t understand what’s going on. What’s going on is that the owners want more money. The poorest NFL owner has more money than Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Ray Lewis combined. According to the 2009 team evaluations by Forbes, the least valuable franchise, the Oakland Raiders, is worth about $800 million. Most teams are worth over $1 billion, and all of the owners have substantial assets outside of football. These guys

don’t need more money. But they’re fighting with players who risk their health every time they step onto the field. Players want improved postcareer medical coverage, and they don’t want longer seasons that would increase injuries and shorten their careers. This isn’t about greedy players trying to add another Lamborghini to their garages. It’s about Darryl Stingley. It’s about Mike Webster and Kevin

Everett and Cedric Killings. It’s about Ted Johnson and Mike Utley and Dave Duerson. It’s about owners who would rather not have any football games than share their profits with the men who actually play them. I love the NFL. The league recently suffered a significant legal defeat in its efforts to cancel the 2011 season, and if there are games this September, I’ll watch them and write about them. But for now, the league is locking out the players with one hand and promoting its annual draft with the other. It’s hypocrisy. It’s not football, and it’s not fun. Call me in September, Commissioner Goodell.

By Brad Oremland I am a huge NFL fan. I watch about 100 live NFL games every year, plus innumerable hours watching older games and reading or writing about the league. From September through January, football occupies most of my waking life. Even during the offseason, I do things like compiling lists of the greatest kick returners ever or the best postseason quarterbacks. I love pro football, and I have covered the NFL draft every season since 2003. I skipped this year’s draft. I didn’t watch on television. I didn’t read about it. I don’t even know who was picked after the first round, though I’m sure I’ll learn if the league ever admits that there should be games this year. Joe Posnanski wrote a post last week that largely echoes my feelings on this matter: “The owners, under Goodell’s leadership, decided to go for broke as they try to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. They did this at a time when the NFL is, by far, the most successful sports league in America, perhaps the world. They did this at a time when the league is a $9 billion entity, when television networks are sending flowers and chocolate, and when reports are coming out constantly about the horrible damage football does to its players. Goodell, in representing the owners, had the gall to cry poor, to demand a billion more right off the top for their billionaire owners, to say that the game could not possibly continue like this, to take money away from players who seem to be dying young and suffering terribly in later years, to actually demand expanding the season.” As Posnanski pointed out, during labor conflicts, most sports fans reflexively side against the players. But there is a clear bad guy this time, and it’s not the players or the union. It’s the league and the owners. If you’re blaming the players for the possibility that there might not be NFL games in 2011, you don’t understand what’s going on. Or maybe you’re racist, and feel more comfortable with billionaire white owners than millionaire black players. Maybe you’re racist and you For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

Chevrolet chose San Diego to launch its long awaited Camaro Convertible. On hand were both the high performance SS models and V6 models that will likely account for more than half of convertible sales. Chevrolet also offered writers the chance to get behind the wheel of V8 and V6 Ford Mustangs for competitive evaluation. The Camaro Convertible offers the same engine choices as the coupe: a 312hp Direct Injection V6 engine for the standard version and a 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 426 hp for the SS version. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic. The Convertible Camaro will be offered with four-wheel disc brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, and 18”, 19” or 20” wheels. The SS model gets Launch Control with a manual transmission to optimize hard-acceleration launches for quicker, more consistent performance. Top Speed 2013 Chevrolet Corvette Many of us have been waiting for the arrival of the next-generation Corvette C7 for quite some time. It’s not so much because we are hardcore Corvette lovers or even because the next generation is getting any dramatic changes to pique our interest, but with so many changes in regulations and the growing awareness of the environment — and the effects that has on our wallets — we were just curious to see if Chevrolet would be biting the bullet and straying away from their trademark V8 engine. A few months ago we shared a video of Chevrolet chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, getting very defensive over the company’s beloved Corvette and it became clear that the next generation would still carry the V8 engine that has gotten them this far, but it would be getting some changes to move with the times. The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette — and not 2011 as originally planned — will be utilizing a 5.5L small block V8 engine in its front engine, rear wheel drive platform and will actually get more horsepower than the typical 6.2L and 7.0L engines used in the past. The Corvette will now sport 440HP, about 5 HP up from the previous generation, and will also feature better fuel economy to boot. The engine will come with a revised combustion system and an aluminum block and heads. The engine won’t be the only defining change, that we can be sure of. Rumors suggest that Chevrolet will finally be bumping up the quality of the materials used in the sports car — ending what seems to be generations of poor quality complaints — and will be putting in higher end seats similar to buckets seats. If they expect to keep up with the times, then we would suggest putting in a few technological advances. If the Ford Focus can get all teched out, then the Corvette should be able to dazzle us with something

Celebrating the USS CARL VINSON

The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third United States Navy Nimitz class supercarrier and is named after Carl Vinson, a Congressman from Georgia. Carl Vinson’s call sign is “Gold Eagle.” A member of the United States House of Representatives for fifty years, Carl Vinson was, for twenty-nine years, the Chairman of the House Naval Affairs and Armed Services Committee. The seal of USS Carl Vinson shows an eagle, wings spread and talons extended, carrying a banner in its beak. The eagle is emblematic of the nation and the ship’s motto, and also represents the power that resides in the ship’s aircraft. The eagle flies in the form of a stylized letter “V,” the initial of the ship’s namesake, Congressman Carl Vinson. The “V” also represents the ship’s hull when viewed bow-on. Inscribed on the banner the eagle carries is the Latin Phrase “Vis Per Mare” which means “Strength through the Sea.” In October 2009, the US Navy announced that Carl Vinson would be the flagship of the newly established Carrier Strike Group 1, based in San Diego. The ship, under the command of Captain Bruce H. Lindsey, departed Norfolk for San Diego on 12 January 2010. Accompanying the carrier was Carrier Air Wing Seventeen, Destroyer Squadron 1 and the guided missile cruiser Bunker Hill.

Commentary

A time for sadness By Cal Thomas “A member ... officer or employee of the House shall conduct himself at all times in a manner that shall reflect

creditably on the House.” -- Code of Official Conduct, Rule XXIII, Clause 1 One might expect a conservative like me to pile on Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), joining many of my fellow conservatives on the heap. I’ve heard the jokes and read the double entendre headlines in the New York Post and other publications. After the high and mighty promise of Rep. Nancy Pelosi to “drain the swamp” of Republican corruption fol-

lowing recent GOP sex scandals, some conservatives might see this as payback. They shouldn’t, both they and our institutions of government could benefit from a little soul searching. There are at least two truths emerging from this tawdry episode of tweeting half and apparently fully naked pictures of the congressman to women he did not know (though it would not have been any better had he known the women).

First, despite the posturing of some Republicans, no one should claim he (or she) would not do the same thing, or something worse, given similar circumstances and opportunity. Weiner’s “crime” is that he is a sinner like the rest of us. The pictures illustrate a personal moral failing. The lying about it was a breach of trust and offense to the House of Representatives and to the people of his district who put sufficient faith in him to elect him to office and pay his salary and benefits. His colleagues and his constituents have a right to expect honesty and some self-control from someone placed in high office. The second truth is that the expectations of our culture are now so low that we no longer honor and value people of integrity, only celebrity. It matters not how one becomes famous. It matters only that they are known outside their circle of family and friends. Have you noticed any magazines at the supermarket checkout line that honor long marriages, people of character and commitment? It’s the same with television. A nation gets more of what it promotes and less of what it debunks. Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (once known as “client number 9”) is making a nice living at CNN, following his dalliances with highpriced call girls. Lack of integrity and personal moral character used to get one shunned. Now it can get you your own TV program. “Crime doesn’t pay,” lawmen used to say. Today it can. Sometimes moral failings can pay handsomely, depending on how one bounces back. Should Weiner resign? He would if he had any integrity, but he said in a news conference Monday that he intends to stay. Should he be expelled? Republicans might like to make him the poster boy for Democratic “family values,” but again, going down that road will only lead to reminders that Republicans have several of their own in the ethical and moral ditch. One senses a rush to get this over with before election season is upon us. Rep. Pelosi has asked the House Ethics Committee to take up the matter. I am not a sex addiction expert, but my wife, a retired family therapist, earned a certificate in sex addiction as part of her post-graduate education. She says that Rep. Weiner has an obvious problem. Therapy is available for such things, she says, but like all addictions, it requires a humbling of one’s self. Humility is not a surplus commodity among many members of Congress. This conservative hopes Rep. Weiner gets help for his problem and that his wife stays with him and encourages himthis in his His rehaUse sizetreatment. on Full Page Ads bilitation should be the goal. It is a “family value” all of us could applaud, regardless of political differences.

Who says boxing is a dying sport? The most popular fighter in the world, Manny Pacquiao, has been given a proposition that is going to be very difficult to pass up. Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has offered Pac-Man a whopping $65M to participate in a boxing match in Mexico. Pacquiao has never fought in the country and Slim wants to see it happen. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a 21-year old with a perfect record of 36-0-1, is likely going to be the opponent.

So just who is this Slim guy? A very important man according to the Telegraph: Slim has made his fortune through a vast conglomeration of companies, particularly in telecommunications. Last year, according to Forbes, he overtook Bill Gates (with a fortune of $53 billion) to become the world’s richest man, partly due to the huge success of his América Móvil phone company. It is the first time in 16 years that the world’s richest man has not been an American. Mr Slim’s sprawling empire also encompasses banking, retail, mining, construction, restaurants, printing and insurance.

World’s 8 most significant and iconic bikes

Thinking about motorcycles as I often do, it got me thinking to the road bikes that changed the world and inspired passion in generations of bikers. Just my opinion, mind! Vincent Black Shadow — 160 mph in the 1940s! Amazing machine! Harley Davidson Panhead — The bike that created the whole chopper thing by giving returning soldiers a powerful, reliable bike that they could chop back and make their own. Every cruiser on the road is ultimately inspired by the Pan, or more accurately what owners did to them.

1972 Kawasaki Z1 — The first of the mind numbingly fast superbikes. I was about 16 when i rode this, got a thrill doing about 135 mph down a country lane!

Which motorcycles do you think were significant and iconic? email: trevor@militarypress.com

1959 Triumph Bonneville — The first modern sportsbike. Good handling, plenty of power, great brakes and good looks (for 1959).

1985 Suzuki GZXR750/1000 — A race bike you could ride on the road.

1971 Kawasaki H2 — This bike was wild! A real screamer. Pop a wheelie in nearly every gear. Fast, fast, fast . . . trouble is it didn’t handle at all, very dangerous machine.

1973 Suzuki GT550 — I loved this bike and still do, thriple two-stroke with a beautiful unique sound . . . mmmmmm!

1973 Yamaha RD350 — Fast as heck with great handling and brakes, this bike annihilated everything and was the beginning of fast lightweight bikes.

Relocation Assistance Program allows smooth move Upon receipt of PCS orders, service members and their families face many challenges that come with relocating to a new duty station. During the period from late spring to early fall, which tends to be the busiest time of year for PCS moves, the stress can heighten as availability becomes limited at schools, child care facilities, moving companies and prospective employment opportunities. The personal contact at the FFSC affords individuals and families one stop shopping for all their moving needs. By calling or visiting a local FFSC, service members are able to receive one-stop assistance with information about the new duty station, including cost of living, housing availability, medical care and treatment facilities, schools, spouse employment, opportunities and cultural adaptation training for overseas duty assignments. Service members can also log on to the Navy Fleet and Family Program website at www.ffsp.navy.mil, and select relocation assistance.

“They are wonderful memories, they are cherished memories, they are my memories.” That was Elizabeth Taylor’s standard answer, when asked to delve deeply into the subject of Richard Burton. Elizabeth took most of her private life — her version of it — to her grave. She gave stock answers to stock questions over the years. She controlled her image while she could. Now that she is gone, her life is up for grabs. First to hold on tight is the great director Martin Scorsese. He has optioned the book “Furious Love” by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger to be made into a film for Paramount. This book recounted the love affair and marriage of Taylor and Burton, a relationship that began in scandal — rocking the world from Hollywood to the Vatican. It ended in divorce. Twice. I suppose a movie had to happen, and in Scorsese’s hands at least we know it will have some gravitas. But Elizabeth herself might just return from that big Chasen’s in the sky to put a stop to it. She had not been happy with “Furious Love,” a book that she originally thought was going to be about Richard, not about her and Richard. And the author’s tale of a “last letter” from Burton to Elizabeth, in which he suggests a reconciliation, is laughed off by Elizabeth’s inner circle. Kashner and Schoenberger claimed Elizabeth kept the letter “at her bedside” for more than 20 years. “Never heard Elizabeth say anything like that, and I certainly never saw a letter on her bedside table, and I was at her bedside daily,” says one of the late star’s assistants. (Elizabeth read an excerpt from the book in Vanity Fair magazine. Her reaction and language was ... colorful.) Burton’s widow, Sally Hay, has promised to cooperate with Scorsese and the studio also has an agreement with Richard’s estate. They are looking to have similar cooperation from Elizabeth’s side. Good luck there, Marty!
