Legislation introduced recently would finally take U.S. military working dogs (MWDs) out of the category of “equipment” and make them bona fide “Canine Members of the Armed Forces.” If it passes, these loyal four-legged heroes who risk their lives for the safety of our troops would at last be officially recognized as the intrepid warriors and lifesavers they have been for war after war. The bill, backed by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Republican Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina, would reclassify the dogs as “canine members of the armed services,” rather than equipment, and would also require the Pentagon to set up non-profit agencies for some or all of the dogs’ post-military health care needs, which are often sizable. The bill further directs the Pentagon to transfer retired dogs without owners to locations where they’re most apt to be adopted. In most cases, this would be a 400-acre facility at San Antonio’s Lackland Air Force Base, which

drones “Drones are not just for our military, but the police, too.”

That’s the initial assessment of Catherine Crump, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, who narrates part of a short video clip that explores the Shadowhawk drone and its implications for domestic law enforcement here in the U.S. The technology is useful, but poses significant privacy risks. ”Drones have very powerful cameras attached to them,” Crump says, “They can see a lot more than the naked eye.” In fact, they

“Close your eyes and think of England!” – which is generally good advice for any occasion. It’s funny to me! Here we are in a supposedly secular, informal, democratic, non-royal country and we are surrounded by queens wearing crowns and coronets. We are “queen” crazy. There is a wonderful photo of the queen of England in Newsweek, taken from the rear with her white curls neatly tucked under a diamond coronet. We imagine so vividly her serene countenance as she walks away under her crown and ermine fur with one white glove showing. These days, the queen has escaped from the “annus horribilus” phase of her relative’s domestic mishaps and is entering her Jubilee Moment in a reign that brings

n Sunday, Sept. 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri at the end of ceremonies marking the unconditional surrender of Japan and the formal end of World War II, Gen. Douglas MacArthur spoke for a world weary of war and hoping for peace: “Let us pray that peace be now restored to the world and that God will preserve it always.” That prayer was not answered as Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and a host of regional and tribal conflicts have preserved war, not peace, as the means by which too many attempt to settle their differences. With U.S. combat operations in Iraq effectively over and Afghanistan in the process of winding down (for us, if not for the resilient enemy) there will be little rest between wars as Iran now appears to be the next target. Politicians start wars, generals plan strategy to wage them and soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen (not to mention civilians) die in them. Since the beginning of the human race, people have sought ways to prevent wars, but every attempt at bringing lasting, or even short-term peace, has failed. At the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., there are some who are now asking the hard questions about America’s role in warfare. Elisabeth Bumiller of The New York Times wrote about it in a story with the headline, “West Point Asks if a War Doctrine Was Worth It.” The discussion, even debate, at West Point is first about the effectiveness of counterinsurgency in places like Afghanistan. Col. Gian P. Gentile, director of West Point’s military history program, is quoted as saying that counterinsurgency could work in Afghanistan if the United States makes a multi-decade commitment: “I’m talking 70, 80, 90 years,” he said. With many countries, including France, pulling out of Afghanistan (in France’s case earlier than previously expected due to orders from the country’s new president) and with shattered economies in need of rebuilding, including our own, this leads to a larger question: Can America afford to virtually “go it alone” in defense

of the liberty of others who are not willing, or able, to bear the burden and pay the price for their own freedom? I’m not sure there is a satisfactory answer to the question but it is a question that needs to be debated since we always seem to be the ones who pay the highest price. “Is it worth it?” How will we measure worthiness? These are questions at the heart of the debate. Former President George W. Bush said, “We’re fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them here.” But we are already fighting them here as demonstrated by Sept. 11, 2001, the Ft. Hood shootings and numerous other successful and unsuccessful attacks. Somewhere between “come home, America,” which would lead to isolationism and intervention in every conflict there is a pragmatic approach to war that America should consider. This ought to be an issue in the upcoming election, but it won’t be unless journalists ask the right questions and demand answers from those who have, or are seeking, the power to start or join wars and send our sons and daughters to fight and perhaps die in them. Perhaps a return to the constitutional principle that only Congress has the power to declare war would help. That is what Rep. Ron Paul argued for during the presidential primary. He raised an important issue, one that should be discussed now, before the next war starts and American leaders decide another generation of young people should fight it.

Drone Ops: Getting Better All the Time By Mark Thompson

T

he dust has settled near the North Waziristan village of Hassu Khel, where a U.S. Hellfire missile killed al-Qaeda’s No. 2, Abu Yahya al-Libi, on Monday. The recent flurry of unacknowledged U.S. drone attacks scored its biggest prize since Navy SEALs took out Osama bin Laden 13 months ago, leaving the White House to flex its might without divulging its methods. “As commander in chief, as president, protection of the United States, protection of American citizens, protection of our allies and our interests, are a high priority, the highest,” spokesman Jay Carney said recently after confirming al-Libi’s death. But, in a strange twist highlighting this growing way of war, the White House spokesman declined to say how alLibi met his end: “I can’t get into details about how his death was brought about.”

But by all accounts, al-Libi met his end as a CIA-commanded General Atomics MQ-1 Predator – an ungainlylooking unmanned aircraft powered by a puny 115-horsepower engine and kept aloft on a 55-foot wingspan – received a signal to attack. A split-second later, one of its two wing-mounted AGM-114 Hellfire missiles – five-footfour, and tipped with an 18-pound warhead – drilled into al-Libi’s lair from two or three miles away. That, strange as it seems, was the easy part. The hard part was finding the right mud house among the tens of thousands in Pakistan’s tribal areas, where al-Libi was thought to have been since he embarrassed the Americans by escaping from its Bagram prison in 2005. The death of the al-Qaeda deputy is the latest in more than a dozen targeted killings of top al-Qaeda leaders in secret U.S. drone strikes since bin Laden’s death. President Obama’s decision to ex-

pand the drone program into Pakistan and Yemen — which are difficult for U.S. troops to access — is one of his finest accomplishments. These precision strikes are also the most humane weapon invented to date in aerial warfare, producing relatively few civilian casualties. Is the jubilation justified? Like time spent over a target, the outline of success is becoming clearer. Even as the number of drones strikes on targets in Pakistan is falling, according to this accounting maintained by the Long War Journal, they seem increasingly to be striking pay dirt. Why? It’s obvious that it’s not the number of Hellfire missiles the Predator and Reaper drones fire that counts – it’s the thousands of hours they have spent quietly lurking over the Waziristans, looking for anything that moves. Think of the drones as California’s ’49ers – the more river sand they sift through, the more they’re likely find glints of gold. True, there will be fool’s gold amid the muck. Civilians, inevitably and unfortunately, are dying. An airstrike in Afghanistan’s Logar province killed at least 21 on Wednesday, apparently a mixture of Taliban militants and wedding-party attendees. This way of war isn’t perfect by a long Hellfire shot. But it offers a path other than deploying hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops overseas to hunt the terrorists down, or simply waiting at home for them to try to strike again.

To Drone Or Not to Drown? Pres. Harry Truman was condemned for dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The conflict as to the validation of using the bomb still exist today. Military experts figured the United States would have lost or injured over 250,000 of our brave men, not to mention all the deaths of Japanese military and civilians. As far as I’m concerned it’s a no-

brainer, either we would have lost all of these brave men because Japan and the Emperor had declared they would fight to the last man, woman and child. Today we are faced with a decision to cut back the use of drones to annihilate Al Qaeda and our enemies in Afghanistan. The drones have proven to be extremely effective in not only surveillance but killing these men from Al Qaeda who want to rain havoc on not just Americans but on the Pakistani military, government and civilians. Common sense tells us that over 95% of our killed and wounded man have been caused by IEDs and for this reason alone it is much safer for our men not to traverse the countryside looking for the enemy! This is why drones are so effective and must be used to protect our men and eliminate Al Qaeda and all our enemies in Afghanistan. Will there be civilian casualties, of course there will... We know when Al Qaeda gathers together to hold meetings they mix themselves with Afghanistan men, women and children to protect themselves from the drones.

Political parties exist to secure responsible government and to execute the will of the people. From these great tasks both of the old parties have turned aside. Instead of instruments to promote the general welfare they have become the tools of corrupt interests, which use them impartially to serve their selfish purposes. Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. 6 June 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

The military uses drones, and now the police will start using them

DRONES, Continued from page 3 can even see through walls with FLIR thermal imaging technology. Crump believes one of the most alarming prospects is that police drones won’t just have cameras on them, but will also be armed with non-lethal weapons. As can be seen in these photos from Vanguard Defense Industries, the Shadowhawk platform is sturdy enough to be fitted with a variety of “less lethal” munitions. Randy McDaniel, Chief Deputy of the Montgomery County, Texas Sheriff’s Office, also weighs in on the Shadowhawk drones in the clip. “We were able to purchase a UAV to use here at the Sheriff’s Office,” McDaniel says. Instead of the ACLU’s sweeping privacy and civil liberties concerns,

Over 30 Years experience

McDaniel focuses in on the benefits of drones for law enforcement. Shadowhawk drones armed with an array of non-lethal force options–including impact rounds, chemical munition rounds, and tasers– could save lives in McDaniel’s opinion. “If it is developed to the extent that we are guaranteed the accuracy, it is certainly something that we could look at, if I can give our swat teams a tool to save their lives, that’s what we are going to do,” McDaniel said. The ACLU’s Crump, on the other hand, believes that an officer on the ground will always have a better sense of the situation, and seems to caution against any police department going beyond surveillance drones to an armed aerial platform. But while a debate rages over police departments using drones, it should be noted that the private use of drones is on the rise. As The Blaze’s Liz Klimas noted last month, “drones have been used by the media to capture aerial footage of Russian protests and riots in Poland“ and a ”civilian drone operated in Texas recently spotted a meat packing plant violating laws by dumping animal products into a local stream.”

Lastly, the bill calls for the animals to be recognized for their service, especially those who died in service or whose feats were particularly courageous. “It is time that we as a nation recognize the importance and contributions of Military Working Dogs, and this can be

done by elevating their status to Canine Members of the Armed Force,” said Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC), who introduced the Canine Members of the Armed Forces Act with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). “These dogs are a crucial asset to the U.S. Armed Forces and have saved countless American lives during the past decade of conflict.” When soldier dogs and handlers deploy, they spend almost every hour

together. In fact, they barely leave each others sides. Handlers can end up developing a closer bond than they have with other people, even spouses. When they have to part in order to fulfill a unit requirement, it can bring a handler to tears. I’ve never seen any soldiers cry when they talk about turning in their old rifles or giving back body armor. The fact that dogs are still considered equipment is terribly behind the times. Sure, they re not human soldiers, but they are a far cry from a rifle or a helmet or a helicopter. Ask any child who watches Sesame Street which of these things does not belong, and they the kid will point right to the dog. Most military dog program instructors and trainers will, too. This legislation not only directly helps the animals, but their veteran owners as well. “For a vet coming home who loves the dog and wants to care for it, it can be a significant financial burden,” Senator Blumenthal notes. And because the care would be funded by charitable donations, it would not cost tax payers. Both Blumenthal and Jones are “doglovers” motivated by the dangerous and courageous work military dogs do on behalf of American troops. While the use of dogs in war dates back to ancient Greeks and Romans,

they received national attention last year when the New York Times reported that the Navy Seals team responsible for raiding Osama bin Ladin’s Pakistani compound utilized a dog in their mission. At the time, then-commander of US forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, said the dog’s capability “cannot be replicated by man or machine” and “outperforms any asset we have in our industry.” Dogs trained for military work typically serve an average of 10 to 12 years and perform many specialized life-saving functions, such as detecting drugs or

explosives. Blumenthal and Jones hope their proposed legislation will help streamline the adoption process, prevent working dogs from being left behind abroad and, ultimately, minimize the number of military dogs that are euthanized. If you want to help, let your senator or representative know you support it. To send a prepared email to your legislator, visit www.militarypress.com/ animal. It is very easy to voice your support. ‘You’re not special’ graduation speech sparks buzz By Pueng Vongs Social media was buzzing about a Boston-area high school teacher’s blunt commencement speech that told students they “are not special.” Wellesley High English teacher David McCullough Jr. told graduates “You are not special. You are not exceptional,” quoting empirical evidence: “Across the country no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools. That’s 37,000 valedictorians ... 37,000 class presidents ... 92,000 harmonizing altos ... 340,000 swaggering jocks ... 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs,” he said in the speech published in the Boston Herald. He added: “Even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.” McCullough makes a statement on parents who overdo it in a modern society focused on collecting achievements. “You’ve been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble wrapped ... feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie.” But he adds in a video on Wellesley Channel TV YouTube page. “You see, if everyone is special, then no one is. If everyone gets a trophy, trophies become meaningless. ... We have of late, we Americans, to our detriment, come to love accolades more than genuine achievement.”

McCullough’s address does push students to recognize real achievement: “The fulfilling life, the distinctive life, the relevant life is an achievement,” and he encourages graduates “to do whatever you do for no reason other than you love it and believe in its importance.” Many flocked to Twitter to express their approval of the message: This is awesome. I don’t remember my HS commencement speech. I think I would remember this one. — S.L. Gray My new hero. Tells grads “You’re not that Special ... when everyone gets a trophy, the trophy doesn’t mean anything.” — Jason Dobrolecki The Boston Herald also reported that McCullough’s words were very well received by attendees. The teacher, a father of four, admitted he’s guilty of the actions he pokes fun at in his speech. But near the end of the address he says, “The sweetest joys of life, then, come only with the recognition that you’re not special. Because everyone is.” Visit: militarypress.com/ notspecial

Veterans, military families and other personnel save nearly $4 billion in savings through the network of stores operating on military bases, with an average family of four saving more than $7,000 each year. “That $7,000 savings goes directly to the bottom line of military households. At a time when there’s been more than a 70 percent increase in food

For some families, it’s a college education, car or house or payment.” Current proposed restructuring of the system could signal the end of the savings this benefit provides. Predatory Practices Target Veterans

The American Legion warns that veterans are at particular risk from predatory actors and vendors bent on parting the veterans from their pensions. The warning goes out now as more and more cases are reported. The illintentioned organizations seek to take advantage of gaps and loopholes in the system and promise veterans longterm care that often cannot be delivered. In many cases, once the “help” is given, there is little follow-up help. Many of the organizations are not even familiar with the intracacies of the VA pension eligibility and cannot provide accurate information to veterans on the best way to proceed with their claim.

Neighbors You don’t live with them but should you live without knowing your neighbors? Whether you live on or off base, everyone has neighbors. Some of you have what I like to call “Shadow neighbors.” They have pure and caring intentions but are a bit annoying. Shadows — kind of like stalkers — know your daily routines, dinner selections and eagerly hold your packages while awaiting your car to pull in the driveway. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s totally normal to tell the kids you want to hide and seek in the bushes too; especially when coming and going from your house. Right? Why do people either love or love to hate their neighbors? By simple definition, it’s just someone who lives near you. Back in the “way old” days, a neighbor might drop by for a friendly conversation about horses or crops. Since then terms like “good fences make good neighbors” have popped up. Some neighbors just click; they share interests and rarely have issues. But for many others, gossip, dirty looks, unreturned lawn mowers, Facebook page deleting and bickering over the Clark Griswoldlike Christmas light extravaganza next door have fueled fires and creating frenemies. It all boils down to personality differences and lack of positive communication. If you have ten extroverts on a block who like to party hard, the one introvert on the block might feel as if they’re smothered in a college frat party all the time. They could turn into the “car neighbors” where all you see is a car pulling in and out of the garage but never any people. We all need to borrow sugar at some point so starting a Hatfield and McCoy war is futile. I encourage you to make an effort to cordially speak to your neighbors. No pressure. Just begin with a simple smile and say, “Mornin’.” You could be meeting your new work out partner, business partner or BFF. I’m not saying you should welcome all your neighbors nightly after work and talk forever with baskets in tow filled with homemade jellies, scones and muffins. This isn’t Stepford Wives. Yum… muffins. You just never know if someone is in need of a friendly smiling face to brighten their day, someone to commiserate with or just sit in silence with. With constant training schedules, deployments and unknowns, it’s important that we have each others’ back even if we aren’t 100% ourselves and maybe one day someone will smile at you when you need it most. Disabled Vets Get Hot Wheels

Car manufacturers are designing innovative vehicles to give wounded warriors their mobility back. Wounded veterans no longer have to resort to the modified minivan for transportation. The customers, mostly men in their 20s and 30s, want to preserve their former way of life despite their injuries and they want vehicles that look like those typically driven by others their age. Such features could include smoked glass, custom wheels, and a body kit to make vehicles look sportier and less obviously modified for disabilities. The disabled transportation industry, which modifies existing vehicles, can now equip trucks with a crane that stows a wheelchair in the truck’s bed or adapt motorcycles to allow drivers to remain in their wheelchairs. “When you’re disabled, everyone does look at you differently. When I’m on the road, I don’t feel different than anyone else,” said retired Marine Jack Pierce, who has a modified motorcycle.

Navy SEAL Gives Olympic Contenders an Expert Edge

The elite U.S. Navy SEALs special forces unit is renowned for its training exercises. Many elite athletes on U.S. Olympic teams or athletic clubs that work with SEALs are strengthening their skills in joint training exercises with the U.S. Navy SEALs. In a recent interview with Armed Forces Network, U.S. Sailing match racer Debbie Capozzi explained the benefits of rigorous training exercises together with experienced U.S. Navy SEALs: “It’s awesome,” reports Capozzi. “There are mental challenges of going in and out of freezing cold water. The biggest thing I got out of that day is how to be mentally tough and when you’re faced with a challenge you think you cannot achieve, just break it down into small steps. In one day, the SEALs were able to transform our minds about how to think and act in a team to achieve the impossible.”

Big Changes for Base Housing Utility Bills Families in private housing on Marine Corps installations will start receiving utility bills this summer ahead of a service-wide plan to charge power hogs and credit power savers. Residents won’t yet pay or collect refunds. That will happen in October at the earliest, with most billing starting by January, officials said. The plan is part of the Resident Energy Conservation Program, which the Marine Corps rolled out April 1 to give families incentives to use less power. The Corps, with nearly 23,000 privatized family homes managed by public-private venture companies, is installing electric meters in all homes lacking the devices. In the next step, installations will establish baselines, or averages, of electricity usage. Under the new plan, as families curb electric use by an estimated 12 to 15 percent, Marine Corps officials project annual savings of $4 million.

The Fix Conspiracy or Coincidence? is it in?

By Stephen Kerr Commissioner David Stern sends a memo announcing a mandatory meeting of his staff, including the league’s Board of Governors and the head of officiating. “This is highly confidential,” the memo stated. “No cameras, no media. Everyone please be prompt.” “We have two very important things to discuss,” he says once everyone is assembled. “The outcome of the postseason, and the draft lottery.” “I cannot stress this enough,” Stern continues. “Everything that is discussed here today must not leave this room. This means no talking to the media, players, coaches, team executives … no one, period. Are we clear on this?” He pauses for effect. We’ve got to find a way to ensure the Miami Heat win the title. They’re the New York Yankees of the league these days — you may love them, you may hate them, but you’ll watch them either way. Sure, the Celtics are still tough, and have that long-standing tradition. But Miami is our drawing card right now.” He turns to look at the head of officials. “This is where your crew comes

in,” Stern tells him. “I want your refs to do whatever they can to aid the Heat, without being too obvious about it. Try to get Miami more free throw opportunities than Boston. One night, it can be a difference of 20 free throws, another night five or 10. If Boston starts whining, or getting frustrated, give them technicals. Half a dozen one game, two or three another.” “I don’t know,” the head of officials says dubiously. “Seems mighty risky to me. What if fans and the media smell a fix?” “If there’s no proof, it’s all speculation, and that’s not a bad thing,” Stern says. “Remember, we’re looking for buzz, something to get people to keep talking about us even after the games are played. The NFL has been eating our lunch lately with the Saints bounty thing, concussions, Brett Favre, Michael Vick, their own lockout. We need to get more of that spotlight for ourselves. More attention leads to higher TV ratings, more ticket sales, more overall revenue.” “As you probably know, (New Orleans Saints Owner) Tom Benson is close to buying the Hornets,” Stern says. “A deal hasn’t been finalized yet, but we’re getting there. We need

to sweeten the pot to ensure he’s the one who buys the team.” “You mean financially?” one of the Governors asks. “No, not financially. Through the lottery,” Stern explains. “We need to make sure those lottery balls bounce

“ I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse.” in favor of the Hornets getting that top pick. When they do, Benson will be swept up in the excitement, with cameras and everything. The Hornets will have some momentum going into next season, Benson agrees to buy the team, the deal will be officially finalized, and everyone will benefit.” “You mean you want Benson to be

present at the lottery?” another member of the Board asks. “Exactly,” Stern says with a smile. “Sure, it will turn some heads, but again, where there is no real proof, there’s only speculation. The media feeds on speculation. Controversy sells. All the buzz, combined with an exciting postseason, will help us both in the short term and going into next season. Now let’s break for lunch and come back in an hour for final discussion. Remember, not a word to anyone about all this.” Did such an encounter really take place? Who knows? Who cares? If controversy and speculation are what Stern was looking for to meet his objective, it’s certainly working. Conspiracy theorists are everywhere. In the Celtics’ Game 2 loss to Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron James went to the free throw line 24 times, while the entire Boston team took 29 shots from the charity stripe. Three Celtics fouled out. The Celtics’ Rajon Rondo received a Dwyane Wade arm in the face late in overtime with the score tied. No call. As for the lottery, the Hornets did indeed end up with the top pick, while the pitiful Charlotte Bobcats, owned by none other than Michael Jordan, had to be satisfied with the second pick. Tom Benson was present, as if he knew he was about to hit the jackpot, while Jordan was a conspicuous noshow. Conspiracy, or coincidence? Well, until there is solid proof either way, it’s up to you to decide.

Suggested Reading & Military History As America’s World War II generation passes into history, one of the last living veterans of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific front offers a frank and searing combat memoir. In HELL IN THE PACIFIC: A Marine Rifleman’s Journey from Guadalcanal to Peleliu, ninety-two-year-old Marine Jim McEnery teams up with acclaimed military historian Bill Sloan to present a visceral, inspiring, and at times heart-wrenching account of horror and heroism on the front lines. Made famous by the HBO miniseries The Pacific, McEnery’s rifle company, the legendary K/3/5 of the First Marine Division, fought in some of the war’s most ferocious battles, including the invasion of Guadalcanal—the first offensive U.S. ground action against the Japanese and the turning point of the Pacific war. In his brutally candid narrative, McEnery also recounts the heartbreaking travesties of Cape Gloucester, a lesser-known battle where 1,300 Marines were killed or wounded in action, and Peleliu, regarded by many historians as the bloodiest and perhaps most nightmarish battle in the entire Pacific war. McEnery vividly describes what it was like to engage in hand-to-hand fighting; what he thought of the fanatical enemy soldiers; what it meant to witness the violent deaths of close friends just a few feet away; and how he came to terms with what he did and saw during his years in combat. In addition, McEnery shares his honest assessments of some of the Pacific war’s most fabled heroes, including Colonel Lewis “Chesty” Puller and Colonel “Red Mike” Edson of Edson’s Raiders, as well as the controversial General Douglas “Dugout Doug” MacArthur, whom he blames for thousands of needless casualties. This book has all the elements of a top-notch, bestselling thriller: breathtaking suspense; a violent and unpredictable setting; an unlikely pair of heroes who are illprepared for their new surroundings; and an ending that will have readers on the edge of their seats. But Mike Dowling’s book isn’t a work of fiction; rather, it is the true-life story of Mike’s 2004 deployment to Iraq with his Military working Dog named Rex; their mission was to seek out hidden IEDs, guns and ammunition in the infamous Triangle of Death. Charged with protecting a highly trained unit of Marines, Dowling and his German Shepherd Rex faced day after day of intensely dangerous, often perilous work as they tried to survive in a volatile country half a world away from home and loved ones. Chappy’s on Eagle’s Wings

Life’s Roads The past few weeks I have had the opportunity to get out on the road and see some more of the countryside…I wanted to share again that I had just completed a special ten day trip of “Run for the Wall” and “Rolling Thunder” Riding for those who can’t… The Ride is to support the call for more effort to bring home those who have served and are MIA’s or POW’s. It was a real special experience to see all the support in the small towns from LA to DC. The people in these towns where so very thankful for those who have given so much. It was truly an honor and privilege to ride with other Veterans for such a mission. It was great to get on the road and

see the beauty of this country like a grand mural stretching beyond our car windows. I have many times now criss-crossed this land and each time I do, I reflect on how truly blessed we are to live here. It reminded me of a trip when my son, Joseph, several times stated, “that almost looks like a picture.” Or when we were on a higher plain, “Dad, you can really see so many beautiful things from up here that we couldn’t see before.” I pondered on his words of wisdom and others he would come out with. I saw him thinking of the greatness of the scene. I saw him recognize that we often get tunnel vision or have blinders on and primarily focus on our little world in

By Chaplain Ringo, www.yourchappy.com front of us. I’m sure like many of you, I love the out of doors, the mountains, rivers, streams and meeting the people in each area we traveled through, especially those in the towns who showed such support for the 100’s of Veterans riding Motorcycle through their town.. Often, when we have time on our trips, we often stop at the flea markets or roadside stands to enjoy the goods, but almost more so for the intrigue of meeting and learning about the people there. It can be a real adventure sometimes; you never know whom you will meet. Remembering the simple things that we have around us can bring such peace, comfort and joy when we allow ourselves to remove the blinders for a bit. I have learned that when I make time to enjoy these simple things I am a happier person. I don’t know if this works for all, but I know when I get out

in nature or I get outside and work in the yard, much of the workweek stress disappears. We have been blessed to live in this most beautiful country with its wide variety of woodlands, beaches, cities, open ranges, snow capped peaks and rolling hills. I believe we need to enjoy them more often and allow them to brighten our lives. Paul Harvey wrote a poem about some of these thoughts. It is entitled, “Dirt Roads” “What’s mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been paved. There’s not a problem in America today, crime, drugs, education, and divorce, delinquency that wouldn’t be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because Dirt Roads give character. People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it’s worth it, if at the end is home...a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog. We wouldn’t have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids

got their exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along. There was less crime in our streets before they were paved. Criminals didn’t walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they’d be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun. And there were no drive by shootings. Our values were better when our roads were worse! People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous. They didn’t tailgate by riding the bumper, or the guy in front would choke you with dust & bust your windshield with rocks. Dirt Roads taught patience. Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly; you didn’t hop in your car for a quart of milk; you walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail, you walked to the mailbox. What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best part; then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy’s shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody. At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap. Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole. At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn’t some neighbor would fill it with too much zucchini. At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck; you’d have to hitch up a team and pull them out. Usually you got a dollar... always you got a new friend...at the end of a Dirt Road!” 22 June 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

Chappy’s on Eagle’s Wings I am able to see this along the drives or rides more now. I view a more simple life of peace and kids enjoying being kids on many a dirt or back road. I also know that anyone who travels deals with the frustrations caused by others who are also on the journey, or even with the occasional roadwork. These often can be unsettling, and bring long delays, frequent stops, unplanned detours and even some dead ends. Life is often like that, too. Though difficult at times, I have found that these unexpected events often lead us to an interesting place we would not have experienced otherwise and we often come away with a new lessoned learned. We know that no two journeys are the same in this life. However, we can trust that with each delay and detour, we are being guided by someone who knows us and loves us perfectly. These will ultimately help us to arrive at our desired place in health and safety. Let us look for more Dirt Roads to explore and see the simple joys they may lead us to, the fishing hole, lake, mountain trail, green meadow and real life pictures. Do it with loved ones and receive a double blessing. As I again discovered, it is ever so important to take our journeys with our eyes and hearts open to partake of all we come across. Let us not be as poet Geoffrey Whitney penned many years ago, “The fool that far is sent,

People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it’s worth it, if at the end is home...a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.

Some wisdom to attain, Returns an idiot, as he went, And brings the fool again”… And instead have the attitude Robert Louis Stevenson shares, “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.” May we take de-

in billions to Great Britain’s needy coffers. The queen is a star and celebrity of the first magnitude and to suggest the Brits get rid of the royal family would be like closing down Hollywood and Toronto. The other queen is actress Charlize Theron. I think, after Angelina Jolie, she is just about Hollywood’s rare-these-days royal real movie star. (Let’s exempt Meryl Streep from this. She is the Empress Star!) But on screen as the wicked stepmother in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” Charlize is the star to wish upon. In fact, when she is not onscreen, this movie suffers drastically from tedious, boring, clanging fights and running through disgusting forests and swimming in the dark, through holes in mountains. Ugh! Miss Theron – to never fail to get back to her – is fabulous, sexy in her believability, invincible as they age her over and over, bouncing back in all her extravagant wickedness and shouting like a modern fishwife, who is irritated and impatient: “Get out! Get out!” to servants. Her gown and costumes by Colleen Atwood are almost worth the money it must have all cost. Charlize Theron, an Oscar winner who will do anything for her art, even lets the movie kill her with old age. She’s beautiful and dynamic, even as a crone. (Just as she remained beautiful in “Young Adult,” in which she was made to appear haggard, playing a woman desperately clinging to her youth. Theron herself is a “child” of 37.) No wonder we cling to Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Elle these days. In their couture unreality, they are the Wicked Queens of glamour. Thank God for a little bit of that!

Top Speed 2012 BMW Z4 White Wolf by Rowen Japan

A Squabble Ensues Over Carroll Shelby’s Remains

death. So in the end this could all be resolved with one tap of a gavel from a judge and Mr. Shelby can rest peacefully.

While BMW is currently designing the next generation Z4, Japanese tuner Rowen gave updating the current generation a try. We don’t necessarily think it needs updating, but to each his own. The updates for the BMW Z4 began with the exterior where the base element was carbon fiber. The kit consists of a new front bumper spoiler, side steps, a side carbon under flap, rear bumper spoiler, and wing all made of carbon fiber. A new set of wheels complete the look,

while the rear of the vehicle gets a new titanium high performance exhaust system that weighs 28 lbs less than the standard exhaust. However, Rowen has yet to reveal if this new exhaust system will translate into any changes under the hood, but it is very possible. On top of those changes, the package also includes a new LED reflector and a LED Z4 emblem to make it a bit more eye-catching.

By Justin Cupler At this point, nearly a month after his death, we all assumed that Carroll Shelby was peacefully laid to rest in a plot of land or cremated, so his ashes may stay with his family or spread as he saw fit. According to a report by TMZ, neither of these scenarios are true, as his family is now fighting over who has control over his deceased body. On one side we have Shelby’s children that are claiming that their father signed paperwork leaving the eldest son in control of the deceased former racecar driver’s body. It looks as if Shelby’s long estranged wife, Cleo, is fighting the children stating that being his wife, she has full rights to his remains. She is fighting this despite the fact that Carroll was in the midst of annulling their 14-year-long marriage citing her lying about numerous personal things, such as her assets and even her real name. She is also arguing that there is no way that Mr. Shelby could have signed any papers giving his son control, as he did not have the “physical capacity or eyesight” to read, understand, and sign off on the papers. Until this is all sorted out, Mr. Shelby’s body is stuck at the medical examiner’s office in a freezer, which is not the place for this automotive hero. He needs to be laid to rest in the place that he made clear he wanted to be prior to his death. If his estranged wife truly does care, she would allow him that right. There is a silver lining to this whole thing and that’s that the annulment Shelby filed for in April is still pending and a judge does have the right to approve an annulment even after For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

Commentary

Japan vs. Detroit!!

We all know that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed in August 1945 after the explosion of atomic bombs. However, we know little about the progress made by the people of that land during the past 66 years. What has caused more long term destruction? The A-bomb, or Government welfare programs created to buy the votes of those who want someone to take care of them? Japan does not have a welfare system. Work for it or do without. And I don’t think there has ever been a better explanation of the importance of incentive than this example. An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.” All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all). After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied ‘hard’ were upset and the students who studied ‘little’ were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied ‘even less’ and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied ‘little’. The second test average was a ‘D’. No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that “socialism” would also ultimately ‘fail’ because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. Could not be any simpler than that. Remember, there IS a test coming up. “Election is sometime soon – perhaps the sooner the better” Your chance to have YOUR say. These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to this experiment: 1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. 2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. 3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. 4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it! 5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Actor Val Kilmer Insults Vietnam Vets Actor Val Kilmer, whose closest brush with the military was his role as “Iceman” in the Tom Cruise hit movie Top Gun, is reported to be seriously considering a run for Governor of New Mexico. In 2010, current Governor Bill Richardson will be out of a job due to term limits. In a recent piece in the New Mexico Independent, Matthew Reichbach says Kilmer is hinting (again) that he might mount a campaign for the state’s highest office. Before anyone considers voting for this delusional egotist, we’d like to remind you of his Chuck Klosterman interview for Esquire magazine: [Klosterman]: You mean you think you literally had the same experience as Doc Holliday? Kilmer: Oh, sure. It’s not like I believed that I shot somebody, but I absolutely know what it feels like to pull the trigger and take someone’s life. [Klosterman:] You understand how it feels to shoot someone as much as a person who has actually committed a murder? [Kilmer] I understand it more. It’s an actor’s job. A guy who’s lived through the horror of Vietnam has not spent his life preparing his mind for it. He’s some punk. Most guys were borderline criminal or poor, and that’s why they got sent to Vietnam. It was all the poor, wretched kids who got beat up by their dads, guys who didn’t get on the football team, couldn’t finagle a scholarship. They didn’t have the emotional equipment to handle that experience. But this is what an actor trains to do. I can more effectively represent that kid in Vietnam than a guy who was there. Are you kidding me? Can he possibly be serious? First, it’s comical how seriously Kilmer takes himself and his “craft.” I mean, really, can he possibly think his job is that important in the grand scheme of things? Next, his egotism is astounding, topped only by his ignorance. Then, it’s just plain insulting to a huge group of American citizens, some of whom even vote in New Mexico. Perhaps Kilmer doesn’t realize that there are 8.2 million Vietnam-era veterans, and that they make up the largest group of U.S. veterans. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 3-in-10 veterans are Vietnam-era veterans. No doubt some of them vote in New Mexico. We know a few of those ourselves, and will be sure to let them know what their potential gubernatorial candidate thinks of them. So, Mr. Kilmer, let me address your condescending allegations. Although I am not a Vietnam vet, I know quite a few, because they are close friends of the one I married. I don’t know a single one who fits Kilmer’s typecasting. Without exception, the Vietnam veterans I know are fine men whom I’m proud to know.
