Corps remembers first black Marines to receive Medal of Honor
By Lance Cpl. Damien Gutierrez, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — In honor of the many contributions made by the African American community to the United States, Camp Pendleton is taking part in observing Black History month throughout February. In 1926, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, an African American historian, author and journalist, launched “Negro History Week,” so U.S. citizens could reflect on the history and contributions of African Americans. It wasn’t until 1976 that the celebration of black history was expanded to include the entire month of February.
The black community has aided in the development of our country in many ways, but one of the more commendable contributions is by defending it as United States Marines. Five African Americans throughout our Corps’ history have been Medal of Honor recipients. Private First Class James Anderson Jr. laid the foundation by being the first black Marine to receive the Medal of Honor for his valiant actions during the Vietnam War in 1967. According to his Medal of Honor citation, Anderson and his platoon were advancing in a dense jungle northwest
of Cam Lo in an effort to extract a heavily overwhelmed reconnaissance patrol. Anderson’s platoon was the lead element and had advanced only 200 meters when they were brought under intense enemy fire. The platoon reacted swiftly, getting on line as best they could in the thick terrain and began returning fire. Anderson found himself tightly bunched together with the other members of the platoon only 20 meters from the enemy positions. As the fire fight continued, several of the men were wounded by the deadly enemy assault. Suddenly, an enemy grenade landed in the midst of the Marines and rolled alongside Anderson’s head. Unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he reached out, grasped the grenade, pulled it to his chest and curled around it as it went off. Although several Marines received shrapnel from the grenade, his body absorbed the major force of the explosion, saving numerous Marines in the platoon. Since then, four other African American Marines, Pfc. Oscar P. Austin, Pfc. Robert H. Jenkins, Pfc. Ralph H. Johnson and Sgt. Rodney Davis, have sacrificed their lives in efforts to save those Marines at their side. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration given by the U.S. government. It is presented by the U.S. Congress to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who display heroism and unselfishness at the risk of their lives above and beyond the call of duty while engaging in an action against an enemy of the U.S. Black Marines exhibited these qualities throughout history making it one more reason to honor those who have given the greatest sacrifice in defense of our country. In observance of Black History Month, the Camp Pendleton Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association hosted the 2011 Black History Month luncheon at the base’s South Mesa Club.

Controversial NASCAR Funding Amendment Crashes and Burns
Funny man Cosby given honorary rank by the Navy
By Beth Ford Roth, homepost.kpbs.org
The House of Representatives recently flooded the engine on a proposal to ban military sponsorship of NASCAR. Just to refresh your memory (in case you have a really bad short-term memory), Congresswoman Betty McCollum of Minnesota introduced an amendment to the federal budget to stop the military from using taxpayer dollars for its NASCAR sponsorship. This kind of sponsorship has been going on for more than a decade, according to the Wall Street Journal: Congress itself directed the Army in 2000 to explore motor sports sponsorships as a recruiting tool. At some point in the last decade, each branch of the military had a partnership with NASCAR racing. The Marines axed their racing team in 2006 because of a smaller ad budget and because there was no way to know if it actually boosted recruiting. Today, only the Army, the National Guard and the Air Force still sponsor race cars. According to the WSJ, the Army spends roughly $7 million each year on NASCAR sponsorship. Not surprisingly, McCollum became the girl who kicked the hornet’s nest with the amendment. As John Kerry never said, “Who among us does not love NASCAR?” Some nutcase even sent McCollum a threatening fax because of her proposal, as was reported on Home Post yesterday. Well, today the House voted down the measure 281-148. This is the last time I’ll write about this. I promise. Just wanted to see this whole t h i n g go full circle. Pun intended.
Actor, comedian and former sailor Bill Cosby was given the honorary rank of chief petty officer by Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SS/ SW) Rick D. West, along with Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center on Feb. 17. A former hospital corpsman, Cosby served in the Navy for four years, working to rehabilitate Korean War veterans. He credited his four-year tour for transforming him from an aimless, uneducated kid into a man with drive, discipline and self-respect. Cosby’s recognition for his service in the military medical ranks has made a splash throughout the media and highlighted what he said he believes to be an important formative experience in his life.

READERS I MP
Letters to Military Press Dear MP, Mr. Matz. Just a quick note of thanks for your great newspaper...I am passing thru San Diego and was sitting at Denny’s and picked up a copy ....As a 30 Year USAF ret. CMSgt I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the entire edition... better than the Air Force Times... :) Many thanks for a great service to our great Armed Forces Warriors. Keep on keepin’ on. – Bob Swaney Hello MP, I picked up a copy of The Military Press today and on page 18 there is a commentary by Rush Limbaugh. I agree with many of his comments on compensation for 9/11 victims versus service members killed or wounded overseas, but Rush gets his facts wrong when he says that members of Congress do not pay into Social Security. This is a fallacy that just won’t die. Attached is an article from the Uniformed Services Journal of March/ April 2003 that says that as of 1983 Congress members pay 6.2% of payroll into the Social Security System and they cannot opt out of this. I also question his statement that they receive a $15,000 per month pension after only one term. Read the article and you see that they can get a pension at 62 only after five years of service. If you have any more recent information that disputes this article I would like to know about it. – Thanks, Richard Carey Well, I finally found the MP article/ op/ed so I could read it first hand! However, our own U.S. Congress voted themselves a raise. Many of you don’t know that they only have to be in Congress one time to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month. And most are now equal to being millionaires plus. They do not receive Social Security on retirement because they didn’t have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7, they may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed them in harm’s way receives a pension of $15,000 per month
Here’s a (lengthy) publication I found and it seems there was a “pivot point” in the Law during 1983/4, so Rush is partially correct: www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30631.pdf. Prior to 1984, neither federal civil service workers nor Members of Congress paid taxes to Social Security, nor were they eligible for Social Security benefits.” The Social Security Amendments of 1983 (P.L. 98-21) required all federal employees hired in 1984 or later to participate in Social Security. Under both CSRS and FERS, Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at age 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. Members are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service. The amount of the pension depends on years of service and the average of the highest three years of salary. By law, the starting amount of a Member’s retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final salary. ... Their average annual pension was $35,952 in 2006 Since this is such a lengthy read, I will give you some time to digest it as the answers to your questions I suspect lie within. So, if someone were hired/elected prior to 1984, then Rush is entirely RIGHT! They would not be forced to pay into SSI. Anyway, read the publication that describes their entitlements in great and exhausting details. Also, I’m really thrilled to see you’re reading Rush, perhaps you might tune into listen as well! AM 600 0900-1200 M-F Most people just accept the words coming out of one person’s mouth as gospel. Now, if everyone would just nail Obama down like you did with Rush, well then, we’d really bring back Democracy! That’s why I thrive and yearn for talk radio. They play Obama sound bites (i.e. Obama op ed) so I can hear and digest his words directly, just like you did to Rush’s words. First hand is the best. Then, one can ponder and discuss the facts vs. propaganda. Hope this helps. Time to relax with American Idol! —M

SAY HELLO TO MY LIL’ FRIEND!
Dubbed the “Punisher” by troops, the XM25 is said to end engagements with enemy combatants in a matter of minutes. Soldiers fire the 25mm airburst munitions on enemy emplacements and return fire disappears. The XM25 utilizes specialized 25mm airburst munitions that receive range to target information from the weapons sighting system. The weapon programs the grenade prior to launch and it detonates once it reaches the target. This allows the shooter to detonate the grenade above dug in adversaries or behind other forms of cover. The only problem so far with the weapon is that there aren’t enough of them to go around. The Army is currently seeking funds for an additional 36 weapons but even once funding is secured, it will be at least a year before they are ready.
XM25 Rifle Shoots At Targets Hiding Behind Cover
Having trouble shooting at wild boars who keep hiding behind trees? Blow up the tree and nail them dead with the military’s latest rifle. Called the XM25, it fires a bullet that can pierce through walls and other types of cover, then explode once they’ve made their way inside. Combining the accuracy of a rifle with the ability of inflicting range damage like a grenade, the firearm removes the need to call in an artillery fire when enemies are shielding themselves using battleground infrastructure. Enemies hiding inside a room? Pfffft. Taking refuge behind a wall? Ho-hum. Closed-quarter combat and ground encounters will never be the same again. The rifle uses a laser rangefinder to calculate the exact stretch from its location to the barrier, which the soldier can then manually adjust (+/- 3 meters) depending on how much further the actual targets likely are. A chip inside the bullet (developed by Alliant Techsystems) processes this information
and triggers the explosion as soon as it travels the distance, piercing through all obstacles in its way. What exactly does this mean? Let’s say you’re robbing a bank and you pull down the blinds so snipers can’t take a crack at you. If someone even catches a glimpse of you sitting two meters from a wall, all the shooter (provided they can get their hands on an XM25) has to do is aim at that side of the building, add in two meters to the range measurements and blow you to pieces with one shot. Unlike grenade launchers and javelin missiles that come with cost and range issues, the XM25’s bullets are predicted to sell for only $25 apiece and will be able to travel distances similar to regular rifle ammo. While not yet in use, they are now scheduled for prototype testing in both Iran and Afghanistan, with expected field use commencing in 2012.

VETERANS ROUND-UP I MP
U.S. Veterans Face Terrible Job Market American veteran soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan wars are facing “terrible” job market as the unemployment rate is rising among them, Bob Chapman, founder of the International Forecaster said on Friday. Some of the U.S. veterans live under “trees and bridges” and are deprived from medical services, Chapman told Press TV’s U.S. Desk. “The American government is just dreadful in the treatment of veterans,” he said. Official reports say the unemployment rate last month was 9.4 percent while it is 15 percent among veterans. Chapman believes the real jobless rate exceeds 22 percent.
Facts & Figures According to statistics for 2010 provided by the U.S. Department of veterans Affairs, there are about 107,000 homeless veterans in the
United States. Researchers estimate that nearly 20 percent of the 1.6 million veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. (The Register-Guard) Somewhere between 15 and 27 million people, depending on how you figure it, remain unemployed. (ABC) The official jobless rate in the United States hovers around 10 percent. (Econpost) When unemployment is measured according to the formula that was used when President Bill Clinton took office, it is actually around 20%. (Free Republic) Half of all American workers now earn $505 or less per week. (Economic Collapse) U.S. President Barack Obama decided in late 2009 to pour an extra 30,000 troops into Afghanistan, bringing the number to around 100,000. (Reuters)

KILL PIRATES ON THE SPOT
Norwegian shipper: kill pirates ‘on the spot’
But Maybe, we should save this one!
By Bjoern H. Amland, Associated Pres OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian shipping magnate was strongly criticized recently for suggesting that pirates captured off the Horn of Africa should be sunk with their skiffs or executed on the spot. “When (piracy) implies a great risk of being caught and hanged, and the cost of losing ships and weapons becomes too big, it will decrease and eventually disappear,” Jacob StoltNielsen said in an op-ed in Norwegian financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. The 79-year-old is the founder of Stolt-Nielsen, Ltd., one of Norway’s biggest shipping companies. He stepped down as chairman two years ago but still serves on the board. “Pirates captured in international waters have always been punished by death, often on the spot,” Stolt-Nielsen wrote Tuesday, arguing that modern navies should deal with the problem like Roman pirate hunter Pompey did more than 2,000 years ago. “Not arrest them and say, ‘naughty, naughty, shame on you,’ and release them again, but sink their boats with all hands,” he wrote. “The pirates won’t be frightened by being placed before a civilian court.” The article drew sharp criticism in
Norway, a seafaring nation known as a peace broker in many of the world’s armed conflicts and as the home of the Nobel Peace Prize. Jacqueline Smith, president of the Norwegian Seafarers Union, described Stolt-Nielsen’s views as “barbaric” and said killing pirates could endanger the 700 seafarers now held as hostages in Somalia. Piracy in the busy shipping lanes off the African nation has flourished since its government collapsed in 1991. Erik Lahnstein, state secretary at
Norway’s Foreign Ministry, said basic human rights must apply also to pirates, and noted that “even for the most gruesome crimes, we do not have death penalty in Norway.” Stolt-Nielsen acknowledged that killing pirates could trigger a backlash against crews held hostage. “But you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. This is war and warfare costs lives,” he wrote. The company issued a statement emphasizing that the comments in the article reflected “Mr. Jacob StoltNielsen’s own personal opinion.”

The company’s ships have been exposed to pirate attacks off Somalia’s coast and some of them now carry armed guards. Other ship owners have taken similar steps to protect their ships and their crews. Meanwhile, in Somalia, the bodies of eight pirates killed in a commando raid last month on a South Korean freighter were brought to Mogadishu’s airport, said Ibrahim Iman, the airport manager. South Korean commandos raided the chemical carrier Samho Jewelry and freed the crew of 21. Halima Hassan, a sister of one of the dead pirates, said her brother was innocent and was killed as he was guarding the coast “from illegal fishing vessels.” Piracy attacks off Somalia began in retaliation for illegal shipping off the coast, though the piracy industry has evolved into a multimillion dollar business with near daily attacks.

It is thought that at least one of the known pirate groups has “consultants” in London sending information to the pirates that include the layout of the ships, cargo, and routes. The pirates have plenty of time and ability to carefully plan their attack so that the ships have little defense.
In April, when Somali pirates captured the MV Maersk Alabama and kidnapped the captain of the ship for four days, the news shocked many. The killing last week of four Americans by Somali pirates also shocked the world. While earlier reports of piracy may have made the news, they did not capture the public’s attention in the same way that these incidents did. The fact is that piracy is not just a legend from days long past, but is a dangerous trend that has actually been on the upswing for the past few years. Read the following facts to discover what you might not know about modern-day pirates. 1. Geographic occurrences. With the recent news about the pirate capture off Somalia, it may appear 8851 Center Drive, Suite 300 to some that modern pirates are isoLa Mesa, California 91942 lated to this geographic area. Financial loss. The estimated annual loss due to piracy worldwide is about $13 to $16 billion. Unfortunately, most carriers decide not to report piracy incidents due to the financial burden. When an incident of piracy is reported, ship owners experience insurance rates that can increase by as much as 30% as well as the daily loss incurred during an investigation that can often run about $1000 a day. 3. Ties to government and organized crime. Many modern pirates have ties to the government and organized crime, such as the pirates in Somalia and the Far East, with some pirates in the South China Sea reportedly working under the protection of the Chinese government. Other pirates take advantage of a lack of government involvement, such as the pirates near Brazil, where there is no Coast Guard or its equivalent. 4. Anchored ships vs. high seas kidnapping. Pirates boarding ships at sea and kidnapping the crew have been making the news but an older report suggests that 72% of pirate attacks occur on anchored ships where the pirates either steal the ships or take cargo and crew members’ belongings. 5. High ransom. When kidnapping is involved, ship owners sometimes must pay high ransom prices to help their kidnapped crew. Ransoms average around $120,000. Some owners will hire security organizations to escort their ships, at costs of around $120,000 per trip to avoid the high ransom payments, danger to their Dr. Tom Pousti is a Double board certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in: crew, and potential loss of the ship and its cargo. - Breast Enhancement - Mommy Make overs 6. COMMENTARY I MP
Egypt’s Dim Future
I’m betting on the Muslim Brotherhood, or an affiliated organization with similar goals, to eventually gain political power in Egypt.
By Cal Thomas
T
he events of recent days in Egypt offer a sober lesson to westerners who think the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak resembles the American Revolution. Much of the television commentary revealed complete ignorance about the history of the region and of Egypt, and especially the clear and present danger of a theocratic coup by the Muslim Brotherhood. First prize for those who are clueless about what is transpiring before their blind eyes goes to James Clapper, director of National Intelligence (though the runner-up prize goes to a TV commentator who compared demonstrators in Tahrir Square to America’s tea party movement.) Clapper told a congressional hearing that the Muslim Brotherhood is a “heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried al-Qaida as a perversion of Islam.” Perhaps Clapper can explain then why the Brotherhood endorsed Hitler’s goal of eradicating the Jews and conspired to assassinate the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and his predecessor Gamal Abdel Nasser. According to the Anti-Defamation League, “The Muslim Brotherhood no longer openly conducts terrorist operations; it is primarily a political organization that supports terrorism and terrorist causes. Many of its members, however, have engaged in terrorist activities and the group has spawned
numerous terrorist groups, such as Hamas and Egyptian Islamic Jihad.” The Muslim Brotherhood is not just one of “a variety of movements” within Egypt, as Clapper asserted, but a powerful and influential religious-political force any “democratic” movement must reckon with. According to a 2009 study by WorldPublicOpinion. org, 64 percent of Egyptians view the Muslim Brotherhood positively, while only 16 percent have negative views. Sixty-nine percent think the Brotherhood favors democracy. Just 22 percent say they are too extreme and not really democratic. Douglas Schoen has advised four Israeli prime ministers, as well as the prime minister of Turkey. In a commentary for Foxnews.com, Schoen writes he believes there is “at least a 50 percent chance, if not more, that a candidate from the Muslim Brother-
hood or a party with a generally similar approach and orientation will win the next presidential election.” Why? Consider a Pew poll conducted last year which showed 48 percent of Egyptians say that Islam plays a large role in politics in Egypt and 85 percent say Islam’s influence in politics is positive. Only 2 percent said it is negative. “Not surprisingly,” writes Schoen, that a Zogby poll found twothirds of Egyptians think, “Egyptian life would improve when clerics play a more central role in the political life of the country.” The fanatics know how to “play” the West, using images and words such as “freedom” and “liberation” to make us think they mean what we mean by those words. Thanks to pathetic reporting by The New York Times and other media sycophants more than 50 years ago, Fi-
del Castro, following the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, was also seen by many as a liberator of Cuba. “I am not a communist and neither is the revolutionary movement,” Castro said at the time. Only after he consolidated power, did he tell the truth: “I am a Marxist-Leninist and I will be one until the last day of my life.” Deception is not limited to communists like Castro. Deception is also a strategy of others who would dominate the world by religious-political doctrines. Last Saturday, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood announced it will not try to win the presidency of Egypt, nor will it attempt to win a majority in parliament. Given the Brotherhood’s statement of purpose and past record, this announcement should be seen as a tactical maneuver designed to fool Western governments, rather than a change in objectives. I’m betting on the Muslim Brotherhood, or an affiliated organization with similar goals, to eventually gain political power in Egypt. Direct all e-mail for Cal Thomas to: tmseditors@tribune.com. .

Time Check
On some air bases, the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle. One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?” The tower responded, “Who is calling?” The pilot replied, “What difference does it make?” The tower replied “It makes a lot of difference. If it is an American Airlines flight, it is 3 o’clock. If it is an Air Force plane, it is 1500 hours. If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells. If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3. If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon and 120 minutes to “Happy Hour.”
Fighter Pilots
Q: How do you know if there is a fighter pilot at your party? A: He’ll tell you. Q: What’s the difference between God and fighter pilots A: God doesn’t think he’s a fighter pilot. Q: What’s the difference between a fighter pilot and a jet engine? A: A jet engine stops whining when the plane shuts down.
Shave and a Haircut
A Navy Chief and an Admiral were sitting in the barbershop. They were both just getting finished with their shaves, when the barbers reached for some after-shave to slap on their faces. The admiral shouted, “Hey, don’t put that stuff on me! My wife will think I’ve been in a whorehouse!” The chief turned to his barber and said, “Go ahead and put it on. My wife doesn’t know what the inside of a whorehouse smells like.”

ately I have been thinking about the past ten years since September 11th 2001. With all the turmoil around the world front and center on the news every day, I was wondering how I might make it an honored day this year. I had many thoughts and feelings run through my mind about that day and all that has transpired from those life changing events. Like many of you, I reflected were I was when I heard about the planes going into the Twin Towers…I was in my office preparing my day at Portsmouth Naval Hospital… A fellow Chaplain came in and asked me if I heard what was happening. We scurried to a television set and watched the horror unfold for the next hour plus. Then we both felt the need to go into my office and have prayer together because we knew, right then and there, that our lives and the world had just changed. I saw our Nation, all walks of people, pull together to help George MacDonald those in need of help and standing together to overcome the heartbreak and chaos. You probably reminisced over similar memories. Much has happened since that day. We did go to war in Afghanistan to hunt for BinLadin. Then we went to Iraq, ended a sinister regime, and witnessed a wonderful sight of the elections that took place , marking a place and time when people have shown trust in a Higher Power… not only their God, but in the power of pulling together and trusting the process. t was midnight when I was awakened by some of my buddies. Shaking me roughly they said, “Brooks, Brooks, get up, you’re on guard duty tonight in Yokusuka and you’re in charge.” “Bullcrap, I said, I checked the duty roster and my name wasn’t there.” “Yeah, yeah, but the sergeant put it there at the last minute figuring that someone would tell you.” “Well they didn’t and I’m not going.” My other buddies in the barracks woke up and said, almost in unison, “Damn it, Brooks, cut out the whining, get dressed and get out of here.” Reluctantly, I did. The uniform for the night was the usual fatigues with an MP armband, plus the M1 rifle, cartridge belt, helmet liner and raincoat. It was pouring here at the base and also in Yokusuka, about 60 miles away. I climbed in the back of the truck and quickly snoozed off with three of my buddies who were under my command. We were to replace the 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift and finish up from 2 to 6 a.m.in the morning. Arriving in town we checked in at the Officer of the Days Headquarters. The OD was a Marine Captain who hadn’t been seen in over six hours. The room was warm with a stove fired up and plenty of hot coffee on the plate. Hell, I thought, I’m not putting my men out in that kind of rainy night. So the truck driver picked up the 10 p.m. shift and drove them back to the base. My men were nervous as hell for me (good guys) but I just couldn’t see any good reason for posting them out on a very dark and rainy night like this. Why walk the post when there wasn’t anything out there important anyway. We enjoyed the warmth and coffee for four hours and went back to camp cozy and dry. But there I was rebelling against authority and refusing to obey military orders. A surefire bet for a Courts-Martial.

A buddy and I were MP’ing one night in a different part of town. One of our tours took us to a street containing many stores on both sides. This was like many of our streets back home but here were only bicycles, no cars. The area was “off limits” to all Military Personnel and our duty included this area to lookout for any GIs and get them out of there. We walked by hundreds of Japanese and I often wondered what we would have done if a mob surrounded us. After all, it was only a year and a few months ago that they surrendered to us and we still did not know what the general feeling was towards the occupational troops. Alan Brooks Strangely, I saw some of them playing Mah Jong, a family game we played frequently at home. Nevertheless, my buddy and I felt very uncomfortable in that town. We were soon told to report to the Officer of the Day because there had been an incident with a GI from our 1st Cavalry unit. We were soon standing in front of the Marine OD’s desk. The following is an excerpt from the upcoming book, “Memoirs of a YOU” by Alan Brooks. Alan enlisted in the Army on August 5, 1946 and spent about one year in Japan as part of the new occupational forces. Many of his experiences were not uncommon for a young 17-yearold American in a foreign land. Many of them are strange and humorous . . . please join us as we bring you Part 1.

from the 1st Cavalry Division had beaten him up without provocation on his part. He recognized the GI from our division because of the familiar shoulder patch. The OD said to go back with him and walk the post and that the man would be able to identify the GI. We were told that the Japanese people have very good memories. We walked the streets focusing our attention on the Navy’s Enlisted Men’s Club in Yokusuka, which was open to all military personnel. Digressing a little, I’ll never forget my first guard duty inside the club, standing with my back to the wall, and being entertained by an all male Japanese orchestra, men dressed in American business suits (white shirts and tie), and they’re playing Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood” and “Tuxedo Junction,” like clones. Unbelievable! We found our man walking towards the club. The Japanese victim identified the GI and we arrested him and escorted him back to the OD. The young (17- to 19-year-old) soldier, small in stature (thank God, no giant of a man), was letting us have it with all barrels. “How can you do this? I’m American like you are, the same outfit, his people killed my brother. When I get back to camp I’ll hunt you two guys down,” etc., etc. He confessed that he did it. We brought him before the OD and he was told that the incident would be reported to his Commanding Officer and that the matter would be in his CO’s hands. We saw that he got in the truck returning to camp while we withstood another barrage of very angry words. We could understand his anger but he broke a law and got caught. We never heard anything more about it after that.

Battle: Los Angeles Starring Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo ...

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world — Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.
The drive-thru window at the Gentlemen’s Club offers the novelty of a drive-thru with the I-don’t-want-to-get-out-ofmy-car convenience of a drive-thru McDonald’s. A special gravel driveway leads to a cinder block carport at the back of the building, where patrons can watch the indoor activity from their vehicles, through a diamond-shaped window. A ‘pay here’ booth takes credit cards, and displays an autographed photo of Fred ‘The Honzman’ Honsburger, a right-wing radio talk show host on Pittsburgh’s KDKA. Current rates are $20 a minute for two or more people; $10 a minute for solo customers. If there’s someone in front of you, you just have to wait in your car.
V8 Hotel (Germany): a car-themed hotel If you’re the sort of guy who slept on a car-shaped bed when you were a little kid and loved it, perhaps this is the hotel for you: the V8 Hotel, a car-themed hotel in Stuttgard, Germany. The hotel promises to give you the night — and the ride — of your life. The V8 Hotel boasts rooms guaranteed to rev the engine of any car lover because the beds and rooms are made from their favorite vehicles. Based in the center of Stuttgart’s Meilenwerk — a German international hub for car dealers — guests can sleep in everything from a Morris Minor to a Mercedes.

MUST SEE MOVIES! “Elmer Gantry” (1960) Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster) is a fast-talking, hard-drinking traveling salesman who always has a risqué story and a hip flask to entertain cronies and customers alike. He is immediately taken with Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons), a lay preacher whose hellfire and damnation revivalism has attracted quite a following. Gantry uses his own quick wit and knowledge of the bible to become an indispensable part of Sister Sharon’s roadshow but soon finds that his past catches up with him in the form of Lulu Bains, now a prostitute. While Gantry seeks and eventually gets forgiveness from Sharon, tragedy strikes when she finally manages to get out of her revivalist tent and opens a permanent church.
Jean Simmons Born: Jan 31, 1929 in London, England, UK Died: Jan 22, 2010 First Major Screen Credit: “Great Expectations” (1946)
Burt Lancaster
A luminous beauty, Jean Simmons was a star in her native Britain and in the U.S. She first appeared onscreen at age 14 in “Give Us the Moon” (1944) but did not become a true star until she played Estella in David Lean’s “Great Expectations” (1946). In 1948, she was hand-picked by Laurence Olivier to play the doomed Ophelia in his classic version of “Hamlet” and won a Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for her efforts. Simmons traveled to Hollywood in 1950 after marrying Stewart Granger. Their marriage lasted a decade and Simmons then became Mrs. Richard Brooks in 1960, the year he starred her in “Elmer Gantry.” During the ’50s and ’60s, Simmons had an extremely busy film career appearing in everything from costume epics to romances to musicals to straight dramas. Simmons received an Oscar nomination in 1969 for “The Happy Ending.” By the mid-’70s, Simmons started working less frequently and divided her time between features and television work. In the late ’80s, she had a burst of character roles, but thereafter, her forays into acting became increasingly sporadic. She died at age 80 in January 2010.
Born: November, 2 1913, New York City, New York, USA Died: October 1994 Nickname: Mr Muscles and Teeth 6’ 1” Burt Lancaster was one of five children born to a New York City postal worker. He was a tough street kid who took an early interest in gymnastics. He joined the circus as an acrobat and worked there until he was injured. It was in the Army during WWII that he was introduced to the USO and acting. His first film was “The Killers” (1946), and that made him a star. He was a selftaught actor who learned the business as he went along. He set up his own production company in 1948 with Harold Hecht and James Hill to direct his career. He played many different roles in pictures as varied as “The Crimson Pirate” (1952), “From Here to Eternity” (1953), “Elmer Gantry” (1960) and “Atlantic City” (1980). His production company, HechtHill-Lancaster, produced the such films as Paddy Chayefsky’s “Marty” (1955) (Oscar winner 1955) and “The Catered Affair” (1956). In the 1980s he appeared as a supporting player in a number of movies, such as “Local Hero” (1983) and “Field of Dreams” (1989). However, it will be the sound of his voice, the way that he laughed, and the larger-than-life characters he played that will always be remembered. For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

T
he Battle of the Bulge, fought over the winter months of 1944-1945, was the last major Nazi offensive against the Allies in World War II. The battle was a last ditch attempt by Hitler to split the Allies in two in their drive towards Germany and destroy their ability to supply themselves. The Battle of the Bulge started on December 16, 1944. Hitler had convinced himself that the alliance between Britain, France and America in the western sector of Europe was not strong and that a major attack and defeat would break up the alliance. He ordered a massive attack against what were primarily American forces. The attack is known as the Ardennes Offensive but because the initial attack by the Germans created a bulge in the Allied front line, it has become more
commonly known as the Battle of the Bulge. Hitler’s plan was to launch a massive attack using three armies on the Allies which would, in his mind, destabilize their accord and also take the huge port of Antwerp through which a great deal of supplies was reaching the Allies. The plan was: • The Sixth Panzer Army, led by Sepp Dietrich, was to lead the attack and to capture Antwerp. • The Fifth Panzer Army, led by Manteuffel, was to attack the center of the American forces, capture the strategic road and rail center of St. Vith and then drive on to Brussels. • The Seventh Army, led by Brandenberger, was to attack in the southern flank, as designated by Hitler, and to create a buffer zone to prevent American reinforcements from attacking the Fifth Panzer Army. • The Fifteenth Army was to be held in reserve to counter any Allied attack when it took place. Hitler believed that his forces would be able to surround and cut off Canada’s First Army, America’s First and Ninth Armies and Britain’s Second Army. On paper, it was a seemingly absurd plan — especially as Germany had been in retreat since D-Day, her military was depleted of supplies and was facing the awesome might of the Allies. However, Hitler, as commander-in-chief of the military, decreed that the attack should take place. The battle started with a two hour bombardment of the Allies lines that was followed by a huge armored attack with the majority of the German armored might based at the Schnee Eifel. The Germans experienced great success to start with. Why was this? The Allies were surprised by the attack. They had received little intelligence that such an attack would take place. Before the attack started, English speaking German soldiers dressed in American uniforms went behind the lines of the Allies and caused havoc by spreading misinformation, changing road signs and cutting telephone lines. Those who were caught were shot after a court martial. The weather was also in Hitler’s favor. Low clouds and fog meant that the superior air force of the Allies could not be used — especially the tank-busting Typhoons of the RAF or Mustang fighters from the USAAF which would have been used against the German tanks. Though the weather was typical for the Ardennes in winter, the ground was hard enough for military vehicles to cross and this suited the armored attack Hitler envisaged. However, the success of the Germans lasted just two days. Despite punching a bulge into the Allies front line, the Germans could not capitalize on this. The Germans had based their attack on a massive armored onslaught. However, such an attack required fuel to maintain it and the Germans simply did not possess such quantities of fuel. By December 22, the weather started to clear, thus allowing the Allies to bring their air power into force and on the following day, the Americans started a counterattack against the Germans.

They are using two types of ammunition, one which has a very bright powder flash, and another which has a dull red glow that gives off very little light. January 26, 1945. (Image and description courtesy of the Truman Presidential Museum and Library.)
“The Ardennes battle drives home the lesson that a large-scale offensive by massed armor has no hope of success against an enemy who enjoys supreme command of the air. Our precious reserves had been expended, and nothing was available to ward off the impending catastrophe in the east.” Also, Hitler’s plan that a successful attack would split the Allies was also based on false hope. If anything, such an attack helped to engender a greater feeling of kinship with one consolidated aim — to defeat Nazi Germany. Alerted GI’s of the M51 anti-aircraft battery are silhouetted against the sky streaked with vapor trails from Allied and enemy planes engaged in a dogfight. The battery is waiting to fire on an incoming enemy strafer. December 25, 1944. (Image and description courtesy of the Truman Presidential Museum and Library.)

On Christmas Eve, the Allies experienced the first ever attack by jet bombers. Sixteen German Me-262s attacked rail yards in an attempt to upset the ability of the Allies to supply themselves. However, without fuel for their armored vehicles, any success in the air was meaningless. The Germans had advanced 60 miles in two days but from December 18 on, they were in a position of stalemate. The fighting was ferocious. The New Year’s period was a time of particularly intensive fighting as the Germans attempted to start a second front in Holland. This time in the Ardennes coincided with a period of intense cold and rain and the soldiers on the ground faced very difficult conditions. Trench foot was a common problem for infantrymen, as was
exposure. By mid-January 1945, the effect of lack of fuel was becoming evident as the Germans had to simply abandon their vehicles. The 1st SS Panzer Division, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Joachim Peiper, had to make their way back to Germany on foot. This was the unit that was responsible for the Malmédy Massacre. The Battle of the Bulge was the largest battle fought by the Americans in World War II; 600,000 American troops were involved in the battle. The Americans lost 81,000 men while the Germans lost 100,000 killed, wounded and captured. Could the Germans have won the battle? Almost certainly not, as they had one huge problem — their inability to keep their armored columns supplied with fuel. Any form of armored attack needed a constant supply of fuel — and Allied bombing of fuel plants in Germany meant that such supplies did not exist. Field Marshall von Rundstedt believed all along that the plan was too ambitious. When on trial after the war, von Rundstedt said that “all, absolutely all, conditions for the possible success of such an offensive were lacking.” His views were shared by General von Mellenthin:

SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS are the new 'Fab Five' Steve Fisher coaches his second 'Fab Five' team since Michigan
From the beginning, Steve Fisher, the head coach of the San Diego State men's basketball team, has taken this program to heights it never thought possible. When he started in 1999, he was taking over a program that hadn't seen the NCAA tournament in 17 years. It had only one winning season since the Reagan administration and even in his first year, the Aztecs only mustered five wins. It was a bad program Fisher inherited, but his skills as a coach shined through.

SDSU's head coach Steve Fisher
Fisher has quietly turned that around in the last decade. He's triumphed through five straight winning seasons and reached the NIT semifinals in 2009. His Aztecs have never made it past the opening round in the NCAA tournament, but with their strongest roster in recent history, San Diego State will be the feel-good story of the postseason tournament.
Kawhi Leonard, the Aztec's 5th starter and top NBA prospet
• San Diego State continues its best start to a season with record of 26-1. • The Aztecs improve to 11-1 in league play, which matches the 2005-06 team for the best Mountain West start in school history. • SDSU's 26 wins matches the most in the nation, & the only team w/1 loss. • San Diego State has won 36 straight games vs. unranked teams at any location. • The Aztecs have won 31 consecutive home games vs. unranked foes. • SDSU runs its home court winning streak to 19 games and has won 12 straight home contests vs. Mountain West Conference schools. • The Aztecs have won six straight over TCU and have swept the season series for the third consecutive year. • San Diego State has won 38 straight games when leading with 5:00 left For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

SPORTS NEWS I MP INTERVIEW By Movie Maven I MP
Olyphant is a man of many talents, know for his roles as the bad guy in LIVE FREE AND DIE HARD to THE HITMAN and THE CRAZIES. Currently you can see Olyphant on the big screen in the release of I AM NUMBER FOUR. When he’s not filming for the silver screen, Olyphant has started its second season with FX comes the return of star/producer Timothy Olyphant and the cast of JUSTIFIED. JUSTIFIED is based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard, including Leonard’s short story FIRE IN THE HOLE. Fresh of the epic gun battle at the end of season, Season 2 finds Bo Crowder dead and the grip on Harlan County broken. Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens must now face off against the criminal organizations that are moving to fill the void and finds himself entangled once again with the Boyd Crowder (Walter Goggins). It was a thrill to actually speak with Tim about his role in the series, what he thinks of his cast mates and anything else that comes up.

Hi Tim, thanks for joining us! Good morning. I just want to say that that introduction was the most exciting prior to an interview that I can ever recall! What have you learned about Raylan from filming the second season? He’s not any taller than he use to be. I’m not sure. I’m terrible at that I have to be honest with you. I’m just trying to figure out what to do next. He seems like he has a lot of problems. What keeps challenging you playing this character? It’s really more about the character that is a joy to play. It’s more just about the beast of television production and trying to keep your head above water. Stay in front of it and just remember how much fun it is. Why do you thing people keep tuning in to watch JUSTIFIED? If they are like me then they think it’s really good. I’m proud of the show and I think its good storytelling first and foremost. If there are actors in early westerns or cop shows that influenced your character of Raylan Givens? I didn’t look past the books. After that I tend to draw inspiration from what ever just floats my boat at the moment. I spent a lot of time with the source material and read the books. I spent time with Elmore and then it was conversations with Graham and conversations with US Marshals - things like that. You really have the rhythm of people in the backwoods with the dialogue. Where are you filming it? Have you had a chance to get around and associate with life down there? We are currently filming it out toward Santa Clarita, which, in the summer time you just head straight for the sun just before you catch on fire. Our producer and location managers are doing a hell of a job and have their work cut out for them. At the end of the day it comes from the writing and funny voices. You’ve made Raylan Givens a dynamic character for tv. Does any of that come from the love of playing cowboys and Indians when you were a kid? How does it feel to play a modern day cowboy? Thank you, I appreciate that. I can’t take full credit for that. I’m just saying the words and trying to bring it to life. You know its all cowboys and Indians when it comes down to it, its child plays. I get a great deal of fulfillment out of it. Just so happens that every now and then I actually put on a cowboy hat and it brings it all home. This one is fun, its always fun, cops and robbers. This is more like cops and hillbillies. This one is a blast. The tone of the show and Elmore is cool and funny and it’s a kick to play a drama. It’s a lot of fun. The expression “all women want you and all men want to be you” can be said about Raylan. That rough around the edges, smooth with the ladies set of right and wrong. Have you ever thought about that? Not till just right now. When I read the books I thought ‘yea, that’s in the ball park of what I was thinking’. The books are great, the character is iconic. Its funny, Elmore and what I remember liking about the books is that Elmore continued on page 36

Kellie Pickler was set to have a big wedding to husband Kyle Jacobs but ended up ditching the elaborate ceremony to elope instead. Now Pickler explains to Ellen DeGeneres why she gave up her big plans. “We were almost finished with the wedding planning. And every time we got to the guest list, it was like, Oh my God, I hate half these people.’” Pickler said during her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show. Pickler, 24, and Jacobs, 37, ended up eloping on the beach in Antigua on New Year’s Day. The two became engaged in June 2010. “All we did was I packed the wedding dress, we packed him an outfit and we flew there. We didn’t know what kind of cake we were going to get, we didn’t have our food picked out,” Pickler says. “We totally just put faith in God that it was all going to work out, and it did, and it was the most incredible day of my life.” Pickler also says she was scheduled for a USO tour in Iraq shortly after the wedding took place. “We got married and then we kind of spent our honeymoon, part of it, in Iraq.”

INTERVIEW By Movie Maven I MP his sense of morality in tact. I think there’s a certain comfort in that. One of the big questions is the fact that you’ve decided to take a departure from the film to shoot the television show. It really has the feel of a film, how do you feel about building the character in tv versus film?
this is a journey. I’ve been very fortunate to be allowed in this process. That is the real challenge here that I really enjoyed. The fun of it is really that in film you know the beginning, I don’t think of it as building a character. middle and the end. You might have some wiggle room but I see it as telling a story that I don’t know how it’s going CAREER TRAINING to end, which is the * fun of it. For me, at the end of the day, the same things apply. Its scene-toscene and figuring out what I’m doing. We make it easy for you to start college! The tremendous upside here is that it’s a tremendous character and its tough to get your hands on a great character.

There are moments on JUSTFIED that are awesome, what are some of them for you? I’m not a huge fan of every episode but there’s not an episode that goes by where there isn’t something where I say ‘that’s good drama, that’s good story telling’. The examples are countless. Where would I start? It’s walking into Meg’s store and asking ‘how’s business’. Its fun to be in a scene where me asking Meg’s how’s business is both so conversational small talk and feels so loaded. I think that’s part of the brilliance of Elmore Leonard and its difficult to duplicate week after week and our writers do such a good job. It seems like small talk, it seems like meandering but everything is like a bullet that is pointed toward something very specific. Those moments are a blast. I could go one forever. The job is just a joy day in and day out. I’ve never left that set and didn’t think ‘that’s great, that was a great moment, a great scene or performance’. Not mine but those around me. I’ve put long hours on this puppy but at the end of the day its something to be proud of and its pretty good. You and “Deadwood” kind of started the whole western coming back as a cool genre. Now you’re in JUSTIFIED, what do you think it is that has made

being a cowboy cool again? First of all, I just showed up to work on DEADWOOD, David Milch, that was his baby. That was a genius at work turning that genre on its head. It was something special to be a part of. I don’t know what I’m doing here honestly but I read this fantastic interview with Walter Mosely from the LA Times that talked about our show. That right off the bat meant something to me. He was talking about that westerns were basically made during a time when people believed in America and American’s believed in something very clear about good vs. evil. As that got a little more foggy, the westerns started to go away. He thought it was really curious now that we take this guy Rayland Givens who seems to be born 100 years to late and stick him in the modern day and start asking those questions again. Rayland is going to be iconic, are you starting to sense that? I really appreciate that, its very generous of you. I knew when I read the thing – close the deal before someone else gets a whiff of this thing. I trust that I know a good part when I see one. Usually when I see one I have to wait for seven people to pass before I get to it. I knew they weren’t going to. I knew it was a good part, I knew it was good writing and I knew that Elmore, when done right, was going to be good. I love it. Beyond that I can tell you that people I run to on the streets – people have been very generous and very complementary. Its nice, your out their telling stories hoping to find an audience and its very appreciated. You and Natalie have amazing chemistry, but this season we do see their dynamic twist. Can you put how this dynamic has shifted with the relationship changing? She’s fantastic. The same things I said about working with Walt I say about working with her. This year, the list goes on and on with Margo and so forth. They are just great. Graham started the idea of these two get back together. I think that it started as a broken relationship but still some sexual tension between the two. After we shot the stuff it seemed like there was a lot more going on their and a lot more interesting. So before Graham and I got back to work that was a relationship that we were both really interested in exploring. We had a lot of fun with that relationship this year and its one of the more interesting things we’ve done. Thanks Tim, JUSTIFIED can be found on Wednesdays nights at 10:00 p.m. on FX.
