The Long Bar

During the roaring twenties, Tijuana was non-stop action. Americans flooded the tiny border town during Prohibition to gamble and drink. By the ’50s and ’60s its reputation was well known for its strip joints, floor shows and cheap bars and beer. It became folklore of wide reputations and spawned many wild stories of bars like Sans Souci, Redd Fox (the place where the comedian Redd Fox started), Clubs Unicorn, Aloha and Bambi. Drinks were outrageously cheap in these places. A 6-ounce bottled ‘unknown’ beer cost $1 and it always came open. Gee … could it be they kept refilling the empties?

ROBERT REDFORD

Who was the first person brought to trial and who was faced with the death penalty for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln? Most people can be forgiven for thinking it was John Wilkes Booth. They would be mistaken. It was a woman named Mary Surratt, whose connection with the plot against Lincoln remains a matter of debate. Robert Redford had read a lot about Lincoln, and he knew that Booth, in fact, was never tried at all, but was shot by a Union soldier 12 days after he fled from Ford’s Theater. But he hadn’t heard about Mary Surratt, the subject of his new film “The Conspirator.” She was the mother of John Surratt, who met with Booth and others in the Washington boarding house she owned. Did she know what they were planning? Was she a co-conspirator? That’s the question at the center of this historical drama, which contrasts her constitutional rights with the desire of northerners to see someone — almost anyone — found guilty for the crime.

WAR ON GUNS NEWS & COMMENTARY I MP

Issa threatens Melson with contempt for noncompliance with ‘Gunwalker’ subpoena

By John Hayward It seems like only yesterday that President Obama was strutting around in front of college audiences, lecturing Rep. Darrell Issa them on the importance of “accountable” government. Oh, that’s right, it was yesterday. Well, never mind all that. What this President says is utterly irrelevant. What he does is worth monitoring carefully. Darrell Issa has not been having much success with monitoring “the most transparent Administration in history,” which is so transparent that subpoenas pass right through it. He’s been trying to investigate the astounding “Gun Walker” scandal, in which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives deliberately allowed American guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. This was supposed to be part of an elaborate plan to either trap them in a crime worse than beheading people and shipping thousands of tons of illegal drugs, or trick them into shooting themselves by accident. They shot some innocent people instead, including a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Issa, who chairs the House Oversight Committee, begin his investigation by issuing a formal request for documents from the BATFE. This got him nowhere, so he rolled up his sleeves and tried issuing subpoenas, which also encountered a stone wall. I remember when the media used to become very excited about massive government cover-ups and the defiance of subpoenas. Darrell Issa still does, so he fired

off a letter to acting BATFE director Kenneth Melson (who has, incid e n t a l l y, been the “acting” director of this agency Kenneth E. Melson since 2009. When do they get a real Director?) As reported by the Washington Examiner, Issa threatened Melson with a citation for contempt if he doesn’t comply with the subpoenas immediately. He also brushed aside the flimsy excuse that providing the requested documents would interfere with a concurrent investigation by the Department of Justice. “We are not conducting a concurrent investigation with the Department of Justice,” Issa wrote, “but rather an independent investigation of the Department of Justice – specifically, of allegations that the reckless and inappropriate decisions of Department officials have created a serious public safety hazard. We are asking for documents that relate to decisions such officials made. Congress is legally entitled to all of these documents.” Gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee For the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, wants Melson to resign. I think that would make it too easy to roll the fabled “ O b a m a bus” over his career. He should be answering questions under oath. A lot of people in the BATFE should be. A lawless Administration moves one step closer to provoking the kind of crisis that even the friendliest reporter cannot ignore.

B.E.S.T ICE Homeland Security Investigations Special Response Team inside the Thanksgiving Day tunnel found by the ICE-led San Diego Tunnel Task Force in a warehouse in Otay Mesa on Thanksgiving Day last year. will most effectively meet its responsibilities for criminal investigation and civil immigration enforcement over the next five years. Moreover, ICE is taking steps to streamline and improve its management structure to give the agency a clearer sense of identity and focus. The plan details four key priorities for the agency’s future: • Prevent terrorism and enhance security • Protect the borders against illicit trade, travel and finance • Protect the borders through smart and tough interior immigration enforcement • Construct an efficient, effective agency

ICE enforces a wide array of laws, including those related to securing the border and combating criminal smuggling. Our nation’s southern border has experienced a dramatic surge in crossborder crime and violence in recent years due to intense competition between Mexican drug cartels and criminal smuggling organizations that employ predatory tactics to realize profits. Law enforcement agencies at the northern border face similar challenges from transnational smuggling organizations. In response to this trend, ICE has partnered with federal, state, local and foreign law enforcement counterparts to create the Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST), a series of multi-agency teams developed to identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations posing significant threats to border security. Hi Dr. Seare,

Actual Patient . . . Amazing Results!

The military decided they wanted to measure me today (monday), so we did that and the measurement was just fine; I was well within what I needed. In fact, I measured in at 35 inches around the waist whereas I was 39-41 depending beforehand. For what it's worth; you've made a very big, and cost-effective change in my life, and I wanted to be sure to say thank you for it again. I've got a body now that will keep me more mobile, motivated, and overall healthier than before, which is priceless. Thank you again. Respectfully, Daniel PS. My wife sends her thanks as well.

TIJUANA IN ITS HEYDAY

But TJ was also known for, the famed Long Bar. Oh yes!!! Written by mac meda on September 8, 2009

The bar was the full length of the place. It was the width of a football field if not more and elbow room only. The noise level was always high of slamming shooters down and Mexican music. At the end was a 12 foot surfboard that hung high on the back wall. Anyone who could power down 24 shots of Tequila and climb up the wall and untie the ropes could have it. Since the drinking age of Mexico was 18, it became the spot for kids that were not 21. If you looked 18, you could cross the border. However, TJ cops hated the pot smoking long hairs, so one had to pin their hair up and stuff it under a baseball cap to enter even if it only touched your ears. Brilcream, (A Little Dab Will Do You), was used to slick the hair back, which was still cool, having not quite gone out of style yet. Walking down the main drag on a Friday or Saturday night, Avenida Revolucion was like Old West, street fights were common, people were trying to sell you everything from a fake silver ring — to their sister, and almost all the cops were on the take. A $5 bribe was the common price for getting out of going to jail if you were caught being drunk and disorderly.

Hussong’s Cantina is the oldest cantina in the Californias (California in the U.S. and Baja California in Mexico). It is located in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico and was established in 1892. Also there is another cantina of the same name located in Las Vegas. Hussong’s founder, John Hussong, was born as “Johann” in Forhsam, Germany in 1863. Johann immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1888, and changed his name to John. In 1889, the discovery of gold south of the border lured John to Ensenada. John made a living hunting and trading supplies up and down the Baja coast. In June of 1891, while on a trading expedition to El Arco, John’s carriage flipped over, and his companion, Newt House, fractured his leg. John brought Newt to recuperate at Meiggs’ Bar, which back then, was Ensenada’s only watering hole. Two days after John and Newt arrived at the bar, Meiggs attacked his wife with an axe. When Meiggs was sent to jail, his wife fled to California. When he got out of jail, Meiggs went in search of his wife, and asked John to mind the bar until he returned. Neither Meiggs nor his wife ever returned. After operating the bar for nearly a year, John purchased and remodeled the building across the street, which was a Southern Lane stage coach stop that bookended the route between Los Angeles and Ensenada. In 1892 he obtained an alcohol license and started operating the John Hussong Bar. His license is still #002 and the building is still located on Ruiz Avenue. Today, Hussong’s Cantina is in the very same building in which it is was founded. Little has changed since it opened. Hussong’s offers two for one beer on Tuesdays, and is packed by 8:00 p.m., mostly with locals. On other nights Hussong’s attracts a large clientele, providing music, excellent piña coladas and the customary basket of peanuts. It’s also the place where the Margarita was created — back in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. He concocted the perfect mixture of equal parts tequila, Damiana (Cointreau is used now) and lime, served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass for Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. In fact, Cinco de Mayo is actually a regional holiday in Mexico, with the celebrations primarily limited to the state of Puebla. The connection to Puebla involves the true meaning of the holiday, which commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces on May 5, 1862. Heavily indebted to France by the 1860s after gaining its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico found itself fighting a French army that was intent on empire expansion, using Mexico’s debt to the French government as justification for invasion. Upon realizing the intentions of the French, both Spain and England withdrew their support. Although President Abraham Lincoln expressed America’s sympathy for the Mexican cause, he was unable to offer any more than that, as his country was busy fighting its own civil war at the time. As a result, Mexico was forced to defend itself against a well outfitted French army. A poorly armed and heavily outnumbered militia, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, managed to defeat the French at Puebla, stopping the French invasion of Mexico in so doing. A regional holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo actually bears more significance in the United States, where it is celebrated by Americans of Mexican ancestry, and is similar to the American celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day and the Chinese New Year.

Mobsters and movie stars at America’s great gaming resort Agua Caliente

Rita Hayworth The Agua Caliente Casino and Resort opened in June 1928 in the Mexican city of Tijuana, Baja California. It was a lavish resort that included a casino, spa, championship golf and tennis facilities, its own airstrip, and lots of entertainment. Stylistically, the resort was an amalgam of Mexican colonial, California mission, and neo-Islamic designs that ranged from mosaic minarets, to cozy guest bungalows, to steaming Turkish baths. It was designed by 19-year-old architect Wayne McAllister and built by Baron H. Long, Wirt G. Bowman and James N. Crofton. Some sources note the fourth partner was Abelardo L. Rodríguez, Military Commander and Governor of Baja California, and future Mexican President. The $2.5 million Agua Caliente racetrack opened in December 1929. Drinking, gambling and horse racing were illegal in the neighboring U.S. state of California, so many wealthy Americans and Hollywood celebrities flocked to Agua Caliente. The actress Rita Hayworth was discovered there while performing in a show. The films In Caliente and The Champ were filmed on location there. The highlight of the opulent casino was the Gold Room, where patrons could only bet using gold chips, with a rumored $500 minimum wager. Bugsy Siegel cited Agua Caliente as his inspiration for building the resort on what became the Las Vegas Strip. Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling in 1935 and closed the resort. It became a state-run school, Escuela Preparatoria Federal Lázaro Cárdenas and eventually fell into a sad state of disrepair. Remnants of the original buildings—the entrance to the pool, a minaret here and there—remain next to the Plaza Minarete strip center at the end of Avenida Sanchez Taboada. Although the casino and hotel were closed, the Agua Caliente racetrack continued to operate for many years. The original grandstand structure was destroyed by fire in 1971, but was rebuilt and continued to operate until Jorge Hank Rhon shut it down and turned it into zoo, complete with elephants, rhinos, chimps etc.

The allure of booze and betting south of the border is the focus of San Diego State professor Vanderwood’s (Juan Soldado) muddled history of a famed Tijuana gaming resort that flourished during Prohibition. Conceived and launched by three American border barons — Wirt Bowman, James Crofton, and Baron Long — Agua Caliente became the premiere destination of Hollywood royalty, foreign dignitaries, and regular citizens who wanted to drink, gamble, and visit the myriad of brothels. The bootleggers and mobsters who sprang up in neighboring San Diego after the 18th Amendment outlawed liquor in the U.S. were also drawn to the oasis of sin, and Vanderwood spends considerable time detailing the botched 1929 robbery of a car delivering the resort’s cash haul to the States, ending in a double murder. The hunt for the killers and their sensational trial drags on with little suspense, and readers soon long for more stories involving Agua Caliente’s glitzy clientele, like the young Rita Hayworth. Meandering from topic to topic, often with long excursions into the personal histories of even minor players, this reads like a patched-together outline for a potentially fascinating book. A few hidden gems

Tepoztlan: On the weekends, Tepoztlan’s cobblestone streets are filled with

spirituality seekers, market lovers, and city dwellers, but during the week, travelers will find a tranquil, enchanting town that is the embodiment of small-town life in Mexico. In many ways, Tepoztlan is like a town out of a storybook; there are quaint ice cream shops, a rock-hewn staircase on the edge of town leads to an ancient pyramid, and wild horses often roam the streets.

Lago Bacalar: The spring-fed waters of Lake Bacalar make an ideal place to

unwind. South of Cancún, near Chetumal, there’s nothing around for miles. If you want adventure, you can paddle a kayak on the lake, follow a birding trail, or venture to Belize or nearby Maya ruins. Cerocahui: Up in the high Sierra Tarahumara, far from where the large tours stop, you’ll find a peaceful little town surrounding a former mission. Nearby are two small hotels that are even more peaceful — no phones, no crowds, no traffic, just beautiful mountains and canyons clothed in pine forest.

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass “Whipped Cream & Other Delights”

Back in 1965, Herb Alpert was the king of cool. His music was everywhere. It was in all the cool places. The popularity of this trumpet and brass driven jazz fit in well with the likes of the James Bond hits of the day. Think Casino Royale! This album was a really big deal in the ’60s. I actually could have written this up as a Wednesday Whale. It in fact was number one on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart in 1965. “A Taste of Honey” peaked at #7 on the singles chart. A couple things about one of the best known album covers of all time. The model was Dolores Ericson. She was not covered in whipped cream for this picture. She was actually covered in shaving cream and she was also three months pregnant at the time.

Lucha libre

Lucha libre, Spanish for free wrestling or free fighting, is a term used in Mexico, and other Spanish-speaking countries, for a form of professional wrestling that has developed within those countries. Mexican wrestling is characterized by colorful masks, rapid sequences of holds and maneuvers, as well as “high-flying” maneuvers, some of which have been adopted in the U.S. The wearing of masks has developed special significance, and matches are sometimes contested in which the loser must permanently remove his mask, which is a wager with a high degree of weight attached. Tag team wrestling is especially prevalent in lucha libre, particularly matches with three-member teams, called trios.

Should we tax the rich? By Joshua Pechthalt Most of us paid our fair share of taxes on April 18 — perhaps even more

than our fair share. But not everyone is ponying up. General Electric, for instance, paid no federal income tax last year on billions of dollars of profits; worse, its army of tax attorneys convinced the IRS to pay the corporation a refund. Closer to home, the top 1 percent of California’s income earners has doubled its share of all income earned

by individuals in the state, but pays a lower tax rate than before. Yet, when Congress extended Bush’s tax cuts for the rich in December, it handed California’s wealthiest 1 percent a $9 billion tax windfall — equal to half this year’s state budget deficit. It’s time to rethink taxes. The law that governs how we set taxes in California is not only broken, it’s breaking the state. A couple of weeks ago, Gov. Jerry Brown announced that his budget negotiations with Republican legislators had failed. Apparently their “no new taxes” pledge has morphed into “no old taxes, either.” It might come as a shock to these legislators to learn that a new public opinion poll shows that their own rank-and-file party members disagree with their rigid stance. According to a statewide survey last month of likely voters sponsored by the California Federation of Teachers, more than three-quarters of those polled — 78 percent — would support a 1 percent additional tax on the top 1 percent income bracket, people who make more than $500,000 per year, rather than see further cuts to schools, public safety and other vital services. A 1 percent tax on the top 1 percent of earners would raise $2.5 billion. The idea resonates with all geographic areas of the state, age groups, ethnicities and political persuasions. Sixty percent of Republicans support such a tax. Although not tested in this poll, recent polling shows significant support even among the rich for higher taxes. Here’s why. Without the tax extension election desired by the governor, the billions of dollars in cuts already proposed for

next year’s budget will be just the beginning. Could you live with a state budget cut by $25 billion out of $87 billion when that means slashing your local fire and police services and further reducing funding for health clinics, schools and colleges? Nearly everyone understands this problem — even people like Bill Gates Sr., a member of Responsible Wealth, an organization devoted to fair taxes on the rich — because they recognize that after they, the top 1 percent of income earners, pay another 1 percent tax, they still will be wealthier than everyone else, with the bonus of living among healthier and better educated Californians. The long-term solution is to change the two-thirds majority rule to raise taxes to a simple majority so the Legislature can do the work it was democratically elected to do. VIVA MEXICO - THE UGLY I MP

Juárez mayor says residents feel secure By Zahira Torres and Aileen B. Flores \ Austin Bureau AUSTIN, Texas — Six months into his tenure, Juárez Mayor Héctor Murguía Lardizábal has a surprising public message for outsiders: Juárez residents generally feel safe. “I cannot speak for everyone,” Murguía told the El Paso Times while in Austin recemtly. But he added, “I feel that as a whole many people feel secure. Of course, with certain precautions.” That message is one that is not often heard, as the Mexican city battles against drug-cartel violence that has left nearly 8,000 dead since 2008. It is a message that seems to mark a shift in the image that Juárez leaders want to portray about El Paso’s sister city. Experts say that perhaps it is a message that will be pushed more as leaders try to encourage the economic development they say is desperately needed to keep the city’s youth working and out of trouble. “It’s definitely a strategy of image maintenance and in some ways it’s a message he has to push,” said Richard Piñeda, associate director of UTEP’s Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies. In recent years, Juárez has at times looked desolate and deserted as residents lock themselves indoors or have fled to the United States or other parts of Mexico for safe haven. But Murguía said the city is now more tranquil and residents have again begun filling public places such as parks and movie theaters. “Yes, there are deaths just like there are deaths in Monterrey and like there are deaths in Tamaulipas, but we need to start showing the strengths that we have,” Murguía said. He added that he considers the moniker of being the most dangerous city in the world “a false cross that we were given to bear.”

Murders in the first three months of the year went from about 186 in 2008 to about 614 in 2010. During the first three months of this year, 626 people were killed in Juárez, according to figures by the Chihuahua state attorney general’s office. Juárez resident Carolina Marti-

nez, 21, said nothing has changed for people in her city. Martinez said residents continue to live under heavy stress and many no longer go out at night. Those who do, she said, always maintain thoughts in the back of their minds that something bad could happen. Martinez, a medical student at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez who has to go to class every day despite violence in the streets, has a simple explanation for why things may seem to have improved. “The truth is, eventually one gets used to living in fear,” Martinez said. “We are human beings and human beings get used to their environment.” Murguía, who visited Austin at the invitation of state Sen. José Rodríguez, D-El Paso, said his goal was to dispel myths about both Juárez and El Paso, as well as to draw more funds to the border region to encourage economic participation. The Juárez mayor did not speak publicly but met privately with Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Rodríguez also recognized Murguía on the Senate floor for his fervent advocacy of trade through Juárez and El Paso, which represents 15 percent of the total trade between the United States and Mexico. “Despite the headlines and the ongoing drug violence that we hear about in the city, Mayor Murguía continues to work to increase commerce, strengthen small and midsize indus-

trial development and improve border relations,” Rodríguez told senators. Many of Juárez’s problems stem from systemic injustices that include a lack of jobs, education and economic stability for residents, Murguía said. Most residents cope under such circumstances, but desperation pushes some into delinquency, he said. For Murguía, those obstacles cannot simply be solved with police and guns. He said any approach by the United States that focuses on militarizing the U.S.-Mexico border or on targeting undocumented immigrants is also not a viable solution to curbing violence and the drug trade. “They are aspirins for a patient with cancer,” Murguía said. Murguía said a solution will come from fostering additional economic and commerce-driven cooperation between the two countries, and from creating an exchange of ideas on social issues such as health care and education that will better the lives of Juarenses. He also said that more of the funding that Mexico receives from the United States through the Merida Initiative — a multiyear program that helps the governments of some Latin American countries confront criminal organizations — should be directed towards Juárez. Both the United States and Mexico have stakes in Juárez’s future, he said. One way the United States can help is by slowing the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico, Murguía said. The Mexican government can invest more in building social and physical infrastructure in Juárez, which it had started doing but has neglected for decades, Murguía said. Still, collaboration must be at the forefront of any efforts to help Juárez, he said.

“In the worst dream that I could have had, in a nightmare where I ate too much food and the little devils show up at night, I could have never imagined what has happened,” said Hector Murguîa of the

violence that sprouted in Juárez since his last term as mayor from 2004-07.

Issa to Holder: ‘Stop Hurting the Administration or Leave’

Emiliano Zapata Salazar (August 8, 1879 to April 10, 1919) was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, which broke out in 1910, and which was initially directed against the president Porfirio Díaz. He formed and commanded an important revolutionary force, the Liberation Army of the South, during the Mexican Revolution. Followers of Zapata were known as Zapatistas. Zapata’s trademark saying was, “It’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.” After some time Zapata became the leader of his “strategic zone.” This gave him tremendous power and control over the actions of many more individual rebel groups and thus increased his margin of success greatly. “Among revolutionaries in other districts of the state, however, Zapata’s authority was more tenuous.” After a meeting with Zapata and Ambrosio Figueroa in Jolalpan, it was decided that Zapata would have joint power with Figueroa with regard to operations in Morelos. This was a turning point in the level of authority and influence that Zapata had gained and proved useful in the direct overthrow of Morelos.

“It’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.”

Darrell Issa, who is challenging Attorney General Eric Holder to either “stop hurting the administration or leave.” The challenge was thrown down on an episode of Shown here are Rep. Chappy’s On Eagle’s Wings

The Newness of Life in Spring Each year we have the blessing of witnessing the newness of life in what we call “SPRING.” While we rejoice in the beauty and the renewing of life during this time of year, we often remain cautious or even a bit reluctant to believe that old man winter won’t rear his ugly head again with a late season storm. I think that we sometimes do this in our everyday life as well. We just celebrated and have been taught the blessings of the Passover season, the Promise of Easter and Christ’s conquering of the grave showing that there is life after death. Especially when we lose someone dear to us, we sometimes question in our minds and heart if we will ever see them again. However, as Paul taught in Romans 6:4, “Like as Christ was raised up from the dead…, even so we also should walk in the newness of life.” This does not only apply to when we leave this earthly probation. It is something that God wants us to enjoy and experience in the here and now. His whole message is meant for us to have Hope in this future life with Him and to have Joy in this life now with Him. What would we do differently or how would we live differently, if we knew we only had a short time left here on earth? Would we spend our time making sure everything at work was done or spend more of our time with loved ones? Would we spend our time worrying or enjoy the simple pleasures all around us? I believe that most of us would choose to live our lives to their fullest. We would take and make the time to enjoy life more completely. This newness of life that we experience each spring can be a part of our attitude all year long if we seek to put it in

our hearts and on our faces. It is what most people drop down and ask for in their prayers. It is what most of us say we wish we had more of. The beauty of it is, we can have it throughout the year if we would look all around us for the joy of life, the precious, sweet, simple and most important things of life—those who share their lives with ours. As we put away the fears of the unknown and the uncontrollable, we actually become a new person—a person of faith, joy and hope. God has promised this to each and every one of us. That doesn’t mean there won’t be difficult or hurtful times, but it does mean that that there is a newness around the corner, if we can only remember that. May we seek to look at the beauties of this life more clearly and more often; not waste our time, whatever that remains for us, on worldly cares and worries. Let us, “Seize the day,” renew our life and bless others along the way. This is my prayer for us all, this week. My hope is that you have a great Spring Season. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy…(Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI.

CLASSICS I MP This is without a doubt my all-time favorite western. The beginning of the film is so memorable, with the young, rough good-looks of Eastwood being labeled “The Good,” the absolutely evil look of Lee Van Cleef being labeled “The Bad,” and a dirty, unkempt, desperado Eli Wallach with booze and food flying being labeled “The Ugly.” The ending fight scene with its 3-way showdown is one of the most memorable pieces of film I have ever watched. Leone did a great job with the camera direction in this movie and the acting is impressive. Eastwood, Van Cleef, and Wallach are absolutely fantastic. The only thing that might scare some viewers off is the length of the film. It is long, but you just don’t seem to notice it when you are watching the film - you are just too damn busy watching the best classic western of all time. Do yourself a favor and rent this movie if you haven’t seen it. If there was ever a perfect western, this is it.

Trivia In the theatrical trailer, Angel Eyes is “The Ugly” and Tuco “The Bad,” which is the reverse of their designations in the actual film. This is because the Italian title translated into English is actually The Good, the Ugly, the Bad, not The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and the Italian trailer had “The Ugly” and “The Bad” in that order. When the trailer was transferred to English, The Ugly and The Bad were not reversed to coincide with the altered title, causing the incorrect designations. After Eli Wallach agreed with Sergio Leone that Tuco would carry his pistol on a lanyard, the director asked him to grasp the gun by shaking his neck, thus making the gun land in his hand. Wallach claimed that he wasn’t able to do the intended action, and asked Leone to demonstrate it. When Leone tried, the pistol missed the director’s hand and hit his crotch. Leone then told Wallach to hold the gun in the belt. The price of gold in 1862 was US$20.672 an ounce. As of 5 March 2010 it is US$1134.45 an ounce. So the $200,000 Tuco, Angel Eyes and Blondie are after would be worth $10,975,715.94 on 5 March 2010. Because Sergio Leone spoke barely any English and Eli Wallach spoke barely any Italian, the two communicated in French.

Clint Eastwood Clinton “Clint” Eastwood, Jr. (born May 31, 1930) is an American film actor, director, producer, composer and politician. Following his breakthrough role on the TV series Rawhide (1959–65), Eastwood starred as the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy of spaghetti westerns (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) in the 1960s, and as San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry films (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool) during the 1970s and 1980s. These roles, and several others as tough-talking, no-nonsense police officers, have made him an enduring cultural icon of masculinity.

A Republican lawyer from Vermont, Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming governor of that state. His actions during the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight. Elected in his own right in 1924, he gained a reputation as a small-government conservative, and also as a man who said very little.

HEARD THE ONE ABOUT THE . . . I MP can pick your way through the wreckage to the terminal.”

After landing: “Thank you for flying Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business and much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride.”

Airline humor Occasionally, airline attendants try to make the in-flight safety lecture and other announcements a bit more entertaining. Here are some real examples that have been heard or reported: “There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only four ways out of this airplane…”

Overheard on an American Airlines flight into Amarillo, Texas, on a particularly windy and bumpy day. During the final approach the Captain was really having to fight it. After an extremely hard landing, the flight attendant came on the PA and announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Amarillo. Please remain in your seats with your seatbelts fastened while the captain taxis what’s left of our airplane to the gate!” Another flight attendant’s comment on a less than perfect landing: “We ask you to please remains seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal.”

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile and given them a “Thanks for flying XYZ airline.” He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, “Sonny, mind if I ask you a question? “Why no ma’am,” said the pilot, “What is it?” The little old lady said, “Did we land or were we shot down? After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the flight attendant came on with, “Ladies and gentlemen, please remain in your seats until Captain Crash and crew have brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning bells are silenced, we’ll open the door and you

Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight!” If you have a small child traveling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with two or more small children, decide now which one you love more.” Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but we’ll try to have them fixed before we arrive. It seems that after years of free-swinging at bats, Ramirez finally drew a “walk,” and the enigmatic slugger left baseball on a positive note.

Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 by the NBA for uttering an anti-gay slur towards referee Bennie Adams on April 12 against the San Antonio Spurs. MANNY PACQUIAO MEDIA TRAINING DAY

FIGHT WITH MOSLEY IS ON! By Marissa Acierto / sccpress.com

It is early afternoon on April 20, 2011 at a special media day traying session at the Wild Card Boxing Club in hollywood for the eight-time Division World Champion, businessman, entrepreneur, singer and congressman, Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran-Pacquiao, aka “Pacman.” Also in attendance were five-time Trainer of the Year Freedie Roach; Team Pacquiao; Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum; former WBF Feather Weight Champion of the World Orlando Villaflor; and members of the ress. The press day started with a one-on-one interview with Freedie Roach by SCCPress.com reporter Regina Ong-Garcia. Regina asked Roach his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao’s future in boxing. Roach said, “Manny will continue to box for over five more years and may run for president of the Philippines.” Regina also inquired, “What is your favorite Filipino food?” Freddie replied, “I don’t really eat much of it but I like chicken adobo.” After the interview, Pacquiao proceeded to the workout activities including shadow bowing ringside, jump rope exercise and different punching techniques on the bag. Afterward, Manny, a devout Catholic, kneeled in a prayer and a moment of silence was asked of attendees. One freelance media photographer said, “I no-

ticed he has not even done his sit-ups and is more relaxd than normal. So, is Freddie Roach...” One freelance sports photographer, who wanted to remain anonymous, indicated he is concerned for the fight. He remembers the training they had prior before and noted that Manny and Freddie were diligent and more active in the training process. In his opinion, the two are not as affected and seem not as serious as they were before the other previous fight he has been in. Therefore, he concluded that the positive energy of Manny and Freddie are showing less physical stamina and output. Former NBA star from the Indiana Pacers Jalen Rose visited Manny and was asked who he thought was going to win the fight? Jalen Rose indicated in so many words that they are both great fighters, and he believed Manny will be the one to take it against the Three Division World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley. However, he made no comments in regards to a possible fight with Floyd Mayweather. The World Welterweight Championship will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 7, 2011. The event is sold out. Pacquiao vs. Mosley will be produced and distributed live on Showtime PPV beginning at 6 p.m. in HD where available at a suggested retail price of $54.95.

Tiger likes going all the way (back) By Jeffrey Boswell Tiger Woods finished tied for fourth at the recent Masters, surging into the lead with a signature charge on the front nine that gave fans a glimpse of the “old” Woods. He didn’t win, but it is clear that, win or lose, no one brings drama to golf quite like Woods. The question is, can Woods be the golfer he once was? “He’s back.” Woods hadn’t heard those words spoken so often since the days when his mistresses would herald his arrival for seconds with those very words, back in the day when he was making more “rounds” in hotels than on golf courses. However, it would be a bit rash to say that Woods is “back” just because of a fine tournament in the Masters. Woods has finished fourth or better in the six Masters since his last win there in 2005. He’s always good at the Masters. Woods has loved many things many times, but he’s loved Augusta National more than any. He knows the course like the back of his hand. So to simply say that Woods will regain his dominance because of a four-hole

There’s something familiar about that golfer there at right. Something in the face, the pose, the swing... nope, can’t quite place it. Kidding, of course. That sterling golfer there is Cheyenne Woods, niece of one Tiger Woods. And while she shares a game and some genes with Woods, she’s just done something he hasn’t in quite some time: win, and win big. Woods, a 20-year-old Wake Forest student, won the ACC Women’s Golf Championship on Sunday with a closing round of 3-under 68. She played a bogey-free round, and won by... well, let’s let her proud uncle tell the story: “My niece, Cheyenne, just won the ACC golf title by 7 shots! That’s awesome, I’m so proud of her,” Tiger Woods tweeted shortly afterward. Cheyenne Woods is the daughter of Earl Woods Jr., Tiger’s halfbrother who remains estranged from Tiger Woods. Cheyenne is currently an amateur, but you have to bet that the LPGA is dancing in the streets at the prospect of getting a Woods of its own, for more than just the occasional tournament, in a few years.

charge on the front nine is purely a case of premature evaluation. However, the early charge may have been the first sign that Woods can be the dominant force he once was. Sure, Woods has supposedly quelled his sexual appetite since that fateful night in November of 2009, but somebody got “laid” at the 2011 Masters. That would be the “foundation” for Woods’ re-ascension to the mantle of world’s greatest golfer. He may never reach that point, but if he does, the sporting world will look back to the 2011 Masters as the launching point. Woods has reorganized and rallied since his personal and professional lives crumbled. Today, “regroup” takes on an entirely new meaning than it did a year-anda-half ago, when “re-group” probably indicated plans for another orgy. What makes Woods’ recent magic so monumental? No one expected it. Sure, everyone expected him to be in contention, but last Sunday, Woods was tied for the lead. And the “fist pump” was back, overtaking the “pelvic thrust” as the Woods celebration of choice for the first time in months.

INTERVIEW By Roger Ebert I MP

Robin Wright plays Mary Surratt, and Kevin Kline plays Lincoln’s power-hungry Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, who pushed for a quick trial. The story is seen through the eyes of her young attorney Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), who, as a Union soldier, wants nothing to do with the trial, and is ordered to defend her by the solicitor general. “I didn’t know anything about this until I got the script,” Redford told me on the afternoon of the movie’s Chicago premiere. “That’s what was intriguing. I thought, oh, this is about Lincoln, and that’s a road well-traveled. But it was the story of Mary Surratt and I thought, I can get interested in telling a story that people don’t know about associated with an event that everybody knows about.” The script was written by historian James D. Solomon and came to Redford as the first production of the new American Film Company, started by Omaha billionaire Joe Ricketts, who is also the new owner of the Chicago Cubs. That explains why on the day after the premiere, Redford threw out the first pitch at the Cubs opener. “Everybody knows the assassination,” he said, “but inside that frame is a story that very few people know about. The injustice of Mary Surratt’s trial as it relates to our own Constitution was that she was tried by a military tribunal rather than at a civic trial. That wasn’t the sole reason for making the movie; that was a good one, but I would not be able to make it unless I could find an emotional core within that story. And that existed with the representation of Frederick Aiken, the lawyer, and because he didn’t want the case. He was a Union soldier having to defend a Southern woman whom he thought was guilty. She wasn’t going to give him any leeway because she thought he was against her. But he realized the Constitution was under threat, and to me that was the story. “When you talk about parallels,

well, the parallels are there, they’re obvious, but it’s not for me to point them out. I’m focused on another story, and that’s the emotional relationship between the two of them, which takes no political sides whatsoever. How can you not see Guantanamo, how can you not see the Patriot Act,

For advertising information call: (858) 537.2280

how can you not see habeas corpus being threatened? But I’m not telling that story. That’s for people to find out on their own.” What do you think? I asked him. Was Mary Surratt a conspirator? “No one really knows. The fact was, she ran a boarding house, the conspirators met there, her son was one of the conspirators, and certainly she knew. That I do believe. How much she was actually a part of the assassination nobody knows, and neither do I. But I like that; I like the fact that it was never even proven. “Nobody knows because of the nature of the trial and the way things happened so quickly. The Secretary of War, Stanton, says, ‘I want these people buried and forgotten quick.’ So the trial was rushed.

Fiction: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is aggressively dismissing cases. FACT: Media have suggested that ICE is aggressively dismissing cases based on a directive from Director Morton. This just isn’t true. ICE enforcement is alive and well. For two years in a row, ICE has removed a record number of illegal aliens from communities across the United States. The agency focuses limited resources on three high priority areas—the identification and removal of criminals and national security threats, fugitives, and recent border entrants and others who game the system. Last year, ICE removed substantially more criminal aliens than ever before. On Aug. 20, 2010, Director Morton issued a memorandum that allows for the dismissal of a very narrow category of cases. The memorandum applies only to individuals who are about to receive an immigration benefit—namely lawful permanent residence—from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This is not backdoor amnesty. By dismissing these cases, ICE attorneys can use limited time before immigration judges to seek removal orders against aliens who are not about to receive a green card and can be removed from the country. Fiction: ICE is pro-amnesty. FACT: ICE does not engage in “backdoor” amnesty. For two years running, ICE has removed more aliens than it did under the prior Administration. In addition, ICE has removed more criminal convicts than ever before—rendering ICE’s enforcement profoundly relevant to public safety. The agency also celebrated recordbreaking enforcement against employers who violated the law. In fiscal year 2010, ICE arrested an unprecedented number of employers for illegal hiring and audited the records of more employers than ever before. ICE is committed to tough, sensible enforcement. Fiction: ICE issues secret memos advocating administrative amnesty. FACT: ICE is clear and upfront about its policies and procedures. ICE is not engaged in amnesty and the removal numbers speak for themselves. ICE has proceeded openly and candidly when considering policy changes. For instance, ICE posted a draft policy related to immigration detainers and solicited views from employees, Congress, law enforcement agencies and the public at large. ICE aims to be transparent in its decisions and policies and has not circulated or entertained secret memoranda about administrative amnesty. Beyond that, the agency’s record of continued and serious enforcement speaks for itself. A summary of policy reforms can be viewed at ICE.gov. Fiction: ICE is anti-enforcement. FACT: ICE is serious about tough, sensible enforcement, and the facts speak for themselves. In a world of limited resources, ICE pursues rational priorities, namely public safety, border security, national security and maintaining the integrity of our immigration system. For two years running, ICE has removed more aliens than it did under the prior Administration. Additionally, ICE removed 70 percent more convicted criminals than it did in 2008 under the prior Administration. ICE is serious about enforcing the nation’s immigration laws. ICE officers, attorneys and personnel report to work each day to advance the agency’s enforcement mission. ICE’s success is evident when criminal aliens are identified and removed from the United States rather than being released to our communities. Undoubtedly, ICE enforces the law—day in and day out. Fiction: ICE runs secret detention facilities. FACT: ICE is committed to transparency. This year, ICE launched an Online Detainer Locator System on its website, ICE.gov. Interested parties, counsel and family members can use this system to locate detainees. Additionally, visitors can find answers to frequently asked questions, locations of detention facilities, as well as contact information for the facilities on ICE.gov. ICE does not have any secret detention facilities.

lengthy long shots. His movies include “The Colossus of Rhodes,” the Dollars Trilogy (“A Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars More, and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”), “Once Upon a Time in the West,” “Duck, You Sucker!” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” Leone died on April 30, 1989, of a heart attack at the age of 60. He was infamous for his compulsive eating, and had become obese. Before his death in 1989, Leone was part way through planning a film on the Siege of Leningrad during World War II. He is survived by his wife and three children. In his later years, Leone had a falling out of sorts with Clint Eastwood, his most famous actor. When Leone directed “Once Upon a Time in America,” he commented that Robert De Niro was a real actor, unlike Eastwood. However, the two made amends and reconciled before Leone’s death.

In 1992, Eastwood directed “Unforgiven,” a revisionist western drama for which he won an Oscar for best director, as well as Best Picture. Leone was one of the two directors whom Eastwood dedicated his award to, the other was Don Siegel who directed Eastwood in a string of movies in the 1970s, including “Dirty Harry.” (The film contains a dedication “To Sergio & Don” before the end credits roll.)

Eli Wallach

One of Hollywood’s finest character / method actors, Eli Wallach has been in demand for over 50 years on stage and screen and has worked alongside the biggest stars, including Clark Gable, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe, Yul Brynner, Peter O’Toole, and Al Pacino, to name but a few. Wallach was born on 7 December 1915 in Brooklyn, NY, to Jewish parents who emigrated from Poland, and was one of the few Jewish kids in his mostly Italian neighborhood. He went on to graduate with a B.A. from the University of Texas in Austin, but gained his dramatic training with the Actors Studio and the Neighborhood Playhouse. He made his debut on Broad-

way in 1945, and won a Tony Award in 1951 for portraying Alvaro Mangiaco in the Tennessee Williams play “The Rose Tattoo.”

Lee Van Cleef

One of the great movie villains, Lee Van Cleef started out as an accountant. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard minesweepers and subchasers during World War II. After the war he worked as an office administrator, becoming involved in amateur theatrics in his spare time. An audition for a professional role led to a touring company job in “Mr. Roberts.” His performance was seen by Stanley Kramer, who cast him as henchman Jack Colby in “High Noon” (1952), a role that brought him great recognition despite the fact that he had no dialogue. For the next decade

he played a string of memorably villainous characters, primarily in westerns but also in crime dramas such as “The Big Combo” (1955). His hawk nose and steely, slit eyes seemed destined to keep him always in the realm of heavies, but in the mid-’60s Sergio Leone cast him as the tough but decent Col. Mortimer opposite Clint Eastwood in “For a Few Dollars More” (1965). A new career as a western hero (or at least anti-hero) opened up, and Van Cleef became an international star, though in films of decreasing quality. In the 1980s he moved easily into action and martialarts movies, and starred in “The Master” (1984), a TV series featuring almost nonstop martial arts action. He died of a heart attack in December 1989, and was buried at Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills.

TRUE CRIME I MP

The Assassination of

Abraham Lincoln In 1864, John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and a Confederate spy from Maryland, formulated a plan to kidnap Lincoln in exchange for the release of Confederate prisoners. After attending an April 11, 1865, speech in which Lincoln promoted voting rights for blacks, an incensed Booth changed his plans and became determined to assassinate the President.Learning that the President, First Lady, and head Union general Ulysses S. Grant would be attending Ford’s Theatre, Booth formulated a plan with co-conspirators to assassinate Vice President Andrew Johnson, Secretary of State William H. Seward and General Ulysses S. Grant. Without his main bodyguard, Ward Hill Lamon, Lincoln left to attend the play “Our American Cousin” on April 14, 1865. Ulysses S. Grant along with his wife chose last minute to travel to Philadelphia instead of attending the play. Lincoln’s bodyguard, John Parker, left Ford’s Theater during intermission to join Lincoln’s coachman for drinks in the Star Saloon next door. The now unguarded President sat in his state box in the balcony. Seizing the opportunity, Booth crept up from behind and at about 10:13 pm, aimed at the back of Lincoln’s head and fired at point-blank range, mortally wounding the President. Major Henry Rathbone momentarily grappled with Booth but Booth stabbed him and escaped. After being on the run for ten days, Booth was tracked down and found at Garrett’s farm in Virginia, some 30 miles south of Washington, D.C. After a brief fight, Booth was killed by Union soldiers on April 26. An Army surgeon, Doctor Charles Leale, initially assessed Lincoln’s wound as mortal. The dying man was taken across the street to Petersen House. After being in a coma for nine hours, Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. on April 15. Presbyterian minister Phineas Densmore Gurley, then present, was asked to offer a prayer, after which Secretary of War Stanton saluted and said, “Now he belongs to the ages.” The infamous handheld
