Obama: Iraq war over by year’s end; troops coming home By CNN Wire Staff President Barack Obama announced in late October that virtually all U.S. troops will come home from Iraq by the end of the year — at which point he can declare an end to America’s long and costly war in that Middle Eastern nation. Of the 39,000 troops in Iraq, about 150, a negligible force, will remain to assist in arms sales, a U.S. official told CNN. The rest will be out of Iraq by December 31. The president said he was making good on his 2008 campaign pledge to end a war that has divided the nation since it began in 2003 and claimed more than 4,400 American lives. Beyond the human cost, the price tag for U.S. military activity in Iraq has been steep as well. A report from the non-partisan, government-funded Congressional Research Service found that the Defense Department spent nearly $757 billion for military operations in Iraq over the past decade, $50 billion higher than the estimate released by the Pentagon. Another $41 billion for Iraq was spent on State Department and USAID initiatives, plus $6 billion for troops’ health expenses, the CRS report stated.

The Tun Tavern

Where the United States Marine Corps held its first recruitment drive Tun Tavern was a tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which served as a founding or early meeting place for a number of notable groups. It is traditionally regarded as the site where the United States Marine Corps held its first recruitment drive. It is also regarded as the “birthplace of Masonic teachings in America.”

Founding

Samuel Carpenter and his brother Joshua erected the tavern beginning in 1685 at the intersection of King (later called Water) Street and Tun Alley. Tun Tavern was named for the Old English word “tun,” meaning a barrel or keg of beer. In the 1740s, a restaurant, “Peggy Mullan’s Red Hot Beef Steak Club,” was added to the tavern.

Organizations founded in the Tavern

Tun Tavern hosted the first meetings of a number of organization. In 1720, the first meetings of the St. George’s Society (forerunner of today’s “Sons of the Society of St. George”) were held there. The Society was a charitable organization founded to assist needy Englishmen arriving in the new colony. In 1732, the tavern hosted St. John’s No. 1 Lodge of the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Temple in its first meetings. (The Masonic Temple of Philadelphia recognizes Tun Tavern as the birthplace of Masonic teachings in America.) In 1747, it became the founding point of the St. Andrew’s Society, which, similarly to the St. George’s Society, aided newly arriving Scottish.

Tun Tavern was a significant meeting place for other groups and individuals. In 1756, Benjamin Franklin used the inn as a recruitment gathering point for the Pennsylvania militia as it prepared to quell Native American uprisings. The tavern later hosted a meeting of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Continental Congress. According to tradition, Tun Tavern was also where the United States Marine Corps held its first recruitment drive. On November 10, 1775, the First Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas, a Quaker innkeeper, to raise two battalions of marines in Philadelphia. The tavern’s manager, Robert Mullan, was the “chief Marine Recruiter.” Prospective volunteers flocked to the place, enticed by cold beer and the opportunity to join the new corps. The first Continental U.S. Marine unit was composed of one hundred Rhode Islanders commanded by Captain Nicholas. Some three million U.S. Marines have been exposed to the significance of Tun Tavern. Each year on November 10, U.S. Marines worldwide toast the colonial inn.

Present day

Tun Tavern no longer exists, having burned down in 1781. Its location is now occupied by Interstate 95 where it passes along Penn’s Landing. Tun Alley was once between Walnut and Chestnut Streets east of Front Street. There is a commemorative marker on the east side of Front Street in that locale, across from Sansom Walk.

aptain Samuel Nicholas formed two battalions of Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 in Philadelphia as naval infantry. Since then, the mission of the Marine Corps has evolved with changing military doctrine and American foreign policy. The Marine Corps has served in every American armed conflict and attained prominence in the 20th century when its theories and practices of amphibious warfare proved prescient and ultimately formed the cornerstone of the Pacific campaign of World War II. By the mid-20th century, the Marine Corps had become the dominant theorist and practitioner of amphibious warfare. Its ability to rapidly respond on short notice to expeditionary crises gives it a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy. The United States Marine Corps includes just under 203,000 active duty Marines (as of October 2010) and just under 40,000 reserve Marines (as of 2010). It is the smallest of the United States’ armed forces in the Department of Defense (the United States Coast Guard is smaller, about one-fifth the size of the Marine Corps, but is normally under the Department of Homeland Security). The Marine Corps is nonetheless larger than the armed forces of many significant military powers; for example, it is larger than the active duty Israel Defense Forces and the active duty British Army. The Marine Corps accounts for around six percent of the military budget of the United States. The cost per Marine is $20,000 less than the cost of a serviceman from the other services, and the entire force can be used for both hybrid and major combat operations; that is, the Marines cover the entire Three Block War. However, these per capita costs do not account for support provided by other branches, such as the Navy’s amphibious warfare ships and the long range air transport of the USAF. However given expected defense budget cuts, the Marines may be the service best positioned for “fielding cheap options for an uncertain world.” The Marine Corps budget is comparably well handled with a tiny fraction of the Anti-Deficiency Act violations of any of the other three major branches.

I remain a skeptic that Libya is capable of heading in a direction that improves the lives of its people, aligns itself with the U.S. and our interests and lessens tensions in the region. But I am open to evidence to the contrary, if it’s not based on wishful thinking.

Chappy’s On Eagle’s Wings

How do we find hope? I have heard it said that hope is a universal yearning. In the Chaplain Corps, we once had in our vision statement a phrase, which stated: “Energizing with HOPE”. I always have felt that this is the work of a Chaplain or leader and have made it the creed, by which I have tried to emulate. And through my daily interactions with others, I have come to feel that most of us, desire that life filled with Hope. What is a person without hope? Have you felt the pain and despair of the

thought, “there’s no hope”? Did you feel like a person with a punctured or torn out heart? I’ve been there. It’s a mass of pain and confusion. I have a friend who works on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and in her limited spare time volunteers as a clown, who goes by the name of Hope. She, too, has the desire to see others experience and feel hope in their lives, and cultivates it through the acts of love, kindness and slapstick of her clown persona. Don’t we all find

Kushner urges: “Be among those who reach out, who assist, who comfort, who bind wounds and dry tears. Remind people whose lives have been shadowed by evil that there is still plenty of good in the world.”

H o w would it be if we did as my friend does, and create hope by helping others feel peace or by being a positive example or influence in our circle of friends and family? Maybe we can create our own opportunities to actually make these hopes come to be reality? We might be pleasantly surprised to see what happens if we gave an honest effort to accomplishing such desires. Do you think you would feel more joy, lightening of some of your own burdens, and even that hope you long for, if you saw it in others, due to your acts of kindness and efforts? I know it sure makes my day brighter and more hopeful. We know that, even the most positive and optimistic of us experience difficult days. We all have times when we are in one of those valleys of life’s landscape. We may even feel like we are in that proverbial “down on our luck” part of life. Some may actually develop clinical concerns of depression and despair. How can we maintain hope during these inevitable days? As Tom Hanks in “CAST AWAY” came to realize: “I had power over nothing, that’s when a feeling came over me like a warm blanket—I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive, somehow, I had to keep breathing, even though there was no reason to hope… So that’s what I did…Then one day logic was proven wrong…because the tide came in and gave me a sail.” Now even though things weren’t the way he wanted, he said: “I know what I have to do now, I need to keep breathing, tomorrow the sun will rise, and who knows what the tide could bring.” We all ought to keep that in mind in our lives, we never know what is around the corner that could change our world. Well, here comes the Chappy in me… It is only when we carefully cultivate our own faith in God and experience His promised love in our lives, that we can and will be able to better withstand any of the difficulties that can daily beset us. This may be a hard concept to understand. However, I know that in combat, and I’m sure many on their way home right now, can attest to this, “there are no atheists in a fighting hole.” Why is that? The same reason most of us turn to our God, when we have our difficult times. We hope we aren’t alone. Well, we aren’t. This doesn’t mean we won’t have trying circumstances, but it also doesn’t mean that we can’t feel hope. Over the years serving as a Marine, Police Officer in the Los Angeles area, a Social Worker in Massachusetts, and as a Chaplain in the sea services, in this variety of experience, there has been one thing that I have seen cheat the despair and pain of difficult times. It is caring and serving someone other than oneself. What a concept. Could this really be hope inspiring? You bet. Think about it. Think to the time in your life when you have felt the greatest joy. I would guess it was when you were assisting another to feel joy, love, and even hope. As we develop this kind of hope, it will abide in our lives and we will experience that joy that endures in spite of daily struggles. I long to have this more in my life. I know that when I practice this kind of faith promoting service, I receive the hope of a loving clown in my heart and share it more freely with those around me. We truly have the ability to decide how we will deal with life and its many peaks and valleys. Look up, put on the smile of the one smiling down on you and increase your joy by sharing it with others. That’s what I want for you.

Better than you think

By Paul Foeller There are three college basketball teams that aren’t being talked about as elite right now that should be. Let’s take a look at those teams, along with a player on each team that might have a breakout year.

Butler Bulldogs Some think of them as the darlings of mid-major schools, and other are left unimpressed, but this year’s Butler team isn’t going to be much worse than the 2010-2011 version that made it to the national championship game. I’m not saying they’ll make it that far again — I don’t think they will — but their level of talent is comparable to last year’s squad. Some players, like incoming freshman Roosevelt Jones, have very high ceilings and haven’t yet had a chance to show what they can do with 25-30 minutes per game. One player to watch may be Sophomore Khyle Marshall. He only played more than 26 minutes one time last year, and in that game he recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The 6’6” Forward may get considerable playing time with Matt Howard gone, and if he does, don’t surprised if he averages something in the vicinity of his numbers from that game.

Villanova Wildcats

Head coach Jay Wright has led this team to the Sweet 16 or farther in four of the last seven years, and I think he’ll do it again this year. They had their second worst year under Wright (as far as conference standing in the Big East) last year, but look for them to bounce back this year. Think more along the lines of 10-8 or 11-7 in the Big East, and 25-8 overall. The 2011-2012 team should look a lot like the 2009-2010 team by the end of the year. The Wildcats player to watch should be Maalik Wayns. The junior guard averaged nearly 14 points per game last year, and should be able to top those numbers this year. He may not be the most talented or even the most explosive player on the team, but I think he’ll be the most consistent. Don’t be surprised if averages near 19 points per game this year, something he did last year in every game in which he shot 40% or better from the field.

Wichita State Shockers Last year’s Shockers team hit their stride a little too late, but still ended the year with 29 wins and a NIT championship. The team this year looks different, but not too much worse. They have not one, but two seven-foot centers, and they have one of the hottest coaches in the country right now. Most surprising to me is how far off of most people’s radar they are. The sexy pick in the MVC appears to be the Creighton Blue Jays, who are a fantastic team, but I think they’ll play second fiddle to Shockers this year. Wichita State’s average victory in their NIT championship run was 76-60, including wins over teams that had received votes in top 25 polls previously in the year. They’ll continue that kind of success this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they won 30 games.

Sports News Peyton Manning has been relegated to bystander status this season As the Raiders (4-3) and some other NFL teams were reminded Sunday, nothing is more unnerving than a sudden lack of presence and proficiency at the most important position in American team sports. No greater evidence exists than the current incarnation of the Indianapolis Colts, who have found life without future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning(notes) to be as humbling as the Chicago Bulls did after Michael Jordan’s departure. With Manning likely sidelined for the season (and perhaps forever) following neck surgery, the Colts have abruptly gone from perennial contender to among the league’s worst teams. They were the worst on Sunday night at the Superdome, suffering a 62-7 defeat – no, that’s not a typo – to the New Orleans Saints and falling to 0-7, officially eliminating Indy from playoff contention. (OK, that last part is an exaggeration, but not much of one.) If Manning, the only fourtime MVP in league history, were to get some votes without playing a down in 2011, it would be tough to argue the logic. It’s hardly surprising that the current focus of many Colts fans, and those of similarly sorry teams like the Dolphins, Broncos, Seahawks, Cardinals and Vikings, is rooting for the team they revere to lose as many games as possible. The mantra: “Suck for Luck,” a reference to Stanford’s Andrew Luck, widely considered one of the top QB prospects since Manning went first overall in the 1998 NFL draft.

WORLD WAR II VETERANS YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN World War II World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945, which involved most of the world’s nations, including all of the great powers, organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of “total war,” the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant events involving the mass death of civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it was the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 50 million to over 70 million fatalities. The war is generally accepted to have begun on 1 September 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Germany set out to establish a large German empire in Europe. During 1939 to early 1941, in a series of successful military campaigns and political treaties, Germany conquered or politically subdued most of continental Europe apart from the Soviet Union. Britain and the Commonwealth remained the only major force continuing the fight against the Axis in North Africa and in extensive naval warfare. In June 1941, the European Axis launched an invasion of the Soviet Union, giving a start to the largest land theatre of war in history, which, from this moment on, was tying down the major part of the Axis military power. In December 1941, Japan, which had already been at war with China since

1937, and which aimed to establish a dominance over East Asia and Southeast Asia, attacked the United States and European possessions in the Pacific Ocean, quickly conquering a significant part of the region. The Axis advance was stopped in 1942 after the defeat of Japan in a series of naval battles and after devastating defeats of European Axis troops in North Africa and at Stalingrad. In 1943, with a series of German defeats in Eastern Europe, the Allied invasion of Fascist Italy, and American victories in the Pacific, the Axis had lost strategic initiative and passed to strategic retreat on all fronts. In 1944, the Western Allies invaded France, whereas the Soviet Union regained all territorial losses and invaded the territory of Germany and its allies. The war in Europe ended with the capture of Berlin by Soviet troops and subsequent German unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945. By that time, the Japanese Navy was defeated by the United States, and invasion of the Japanese Archipelago (“Home Islands”) became imminent. The war ended with the total victory of the Allies over Germany and Japan in 1945. World War II left the political alignment and social structure of the world significantly altered. While the United Nations (UN) was established to foster international cooperation and prevent future conflicts (such as World War III), the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War, which would last for the next 46 years. Meanwhile, the influence of European great powers started to decline, while the decolonization of Asia and of Africa began. Most countries whose industries had been badly damaged began moving toward economic recovery and across the world political integration emerged in an effort to peacefully stabilise after-war relations.

KOREAN WAR VETERANS YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN The Korean War The Korean War (1950–armistice, 1953) was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and People’s Republic of China (PRC), with air support from the Soviet Union. The war began on 25 June 1950 and an armistice was signed on 27 July 1953. The war was a result of the political division of Korea by agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War. The Korean peninsula had been ruled by Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. In 1945, following the surrender of Ja-

pan, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th Parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part. The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government. The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South

Korea on 25 June 1950.It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War. The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of the South Koreans in repelling the invasion. After early defeats by the North Korean military, when a rapid UN counter-offensive repelled the North Koreans past the 38th Parallel and almost to the Yalu River, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) came to

the aid of Communist North. A Chinese counter-offensive repelled the United Nations forces past the 38th Parallel. The Soviet Union materially aided North Korea and China. The threat of a nuclear war eventually ceased with an armistice that restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) wide buffer zone between the two Koreas. During the war, both North and South Korea were sponsored by external powers, thus facilitating the war’s metamorphosis from a civil war to a proxy war between powers involved in the larger Cold War. From a military science perspective, the Korean War combined strategies and tactics of World War I and World War II—swift infantry attacks followed by air bombing raids. The initial mobile campaign transitioned to trench warfare, lasting from July 1951 until the 1953 border stalemate and armistice.

VIETNAM VETERANS YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN The Vietnam War Between 1945 and 1954, the Vietnamese waged an anti-colonial war against France and received $2.6 billion in financial support from the United States. The French defeat at the Dien Bien Phu was followed by a peace conference in Geneva, in which Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam received their independence and Vietnam was temporarily divided between an anti-Communist South and a Communist North. In 1956, South Vietnam, with American backing, refused to hold the unification elections. By 1958, Communist-led guerrillas known as the Viet Cong had begun to battle the South Vietnamese government. To support the South’s government, the United States sent in 2,000 military advisors, a number that grew to 16,300 in 1963. The military condition deteriorated, and by 1963 South Vietnam had lost the fertile Mekong Delta to the Vietcong. In 1965, Johnson escalated the war, commencing air strikes on North Vietnam and committing ground forces, which num-

bered 536,000 in 1968. The 1968 Tet Offensive by the North Vietnamese turned many Americans against the war. The next president, Richard Nixon, advocated Vietnamization, withdrawing American troops and giving South Vietnam greater responsibili-

ty for fighting the war. His attempt to slow the flow of North Vietnamese soldiers and supplies into South Vietnam by sending American forces to destroy Communist supply bases in Cambodia in 1970 in violation of Cambodian neutrality provoked antiwar protests on

the nation’s college campuses. From 1968 to 1973 efforts were made to end the conflict through diplomacy. In January 1973, an agreement reached and U.S. forces were withdrawn from Vietnam and U.S. prisoners of war were released. Meds help with the anxiety, he tells you. But when you close your eyes you see the beetle and it’s got nothing to do with goddamn anxiety. Nor is it fiction. And that’s sad, because fiction is what you best understand; it’s what you make bank on, but you can’t flip that beetle into fiction and do it the same justice. He schedules another appointment and leads you to the reception desk where the date for the meeting is logged in a computer and a woman hands you a printout and smiles. She smiles in that accommodating way because she’s wondering if you’re one of the dangerous ones. She sees them five days a week and needs that smile to help her make it to the weekend. You walk between the rows of chairs where vets, some sad beyond words that define sadness, wait their turns, then you go on your way, carrying with you the secret, and return to that normal world where you keep your secret close to the breast, as you must, for no one outside the therapist or those who were in ’Nam can possibly understand. In that normal world that’s anything but normal you sit in a classroom occupied by a couple of dozen men and women, colleagues who have never killed or been asked to kill or asked to risk their lives or plucked a leech from their leg or seen a body slammed backward to the ground by a force as powerful as you imagine the hand of God to be. And you hunker under a shell of pretense, pretending it’s all fine, pretending that this supposed normal life is normal for you as well. Your colleague across the hall asks how you’re doing. It’s perfunctory. He doesn’t really care because he actually

wants to talk about himself. You tell him that if your life was any more boring, it would be his. He laughs and asks where you heard that, thinks you’re quoting W.C. Fields or someone famous. But you’re not. It’s pure you, but he doesn’t believe you because he doesn’t know you. No one here does. You walk into the classroom and see the anxious faces, the bored faces, the earnest faces. They are young, as you once were, and untouched and untouched and so damned untouched, even the most cynical among them, and so wise in their youth that they all have it figured out. You wonder, Were you that much different? You begin the session with a discussion of Frank O’Connor’s “Guests of a Nation.” You will lead them in time to understand that he’s writing about the terrible master called duty and how acquiescing to it can make a man a stranger unto himself, but first you have to make them see the horror of the event and you have to do it without discussing the dark spot on your own soul.

hen John Hennessey points to a car and says he wants to make a performance program for it, magic usually happens. There was no doubt that when Ford brought back the Mustang Boss 302 for the first time since 1969 - that’s a span of 42 years - Hennessey would be getting his picking finger ready. It just became a question of when the American tuning company would have a program ready for it. Hennessey just introduced the HPE650 package for the Boss 302 and today, they’ve upped the ante with the release of the HPE700. Like most of Hennessey’s tuning programs, you won’t see a whole lot of extra decorations on the car. There are badges here and plaques there, but for the most part, what you see with the car is what you get. But when you open the hood, that’s when all hell breaks loose. Just like the HPE650 program, Hennessey’s HPE700 program offers a mammoth horsepower improvement, which might seem over-the-top considering the Boss 302 already has 440 ponies in tow. However, anytime you can take that 440 and turn it into 700, we’re pretty sure that you won’t find a whole lot of people to complain about it.

Exterior and Interior

Aesthetically, Hennessey pretty much left the Ford Mustang Boss 302 alone. Actually, the whole exterior and interior set-up of the car is similar to

the Boss 302 HPE650. There are the traditional carbon fiber door sill covers, the plethora of exterior Hennessey badging, a serial numbered dash and engine plaques, and of course, the premium floor mats. As added options, Hennessey will provide a special carbon fiber Laguna Seca splitter and the company’s own wheel and tire package.

Without Hennessey putting a finger on the Mustang Boss 302, you already get an impressive powertrain that features a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 440 horsepower and 380 lb/ft of torque. But thanks to Hennessey’s expertise on engine tuning - one that includes their new TVS2300 supercharger system - the Mustang Boss 302’s output shoots up the charts to a beastly height of 700 horsepower. The whole scope of Hennessey’s performance improvements also come with a new air-to-water intercooler, a fuel system upgrade, a throttle body upgrade, a fuel injector upgrade, and a new strut tower brace.

It’s like the Ali versus Frazier of American muscle cars. The Ford Mustang versus the Chevrolet Camaro. While you certainly won’t go wrong in picking one over the other, you have to take into account the fact that this particular Mustang is a Boss 302, which is one of the most revered Mustang variants in history. The fact that only 302 models were released in 1969 and wasn’t heard from again until this year speaks to the Bossman’s place in the hearts of muscle car enthusiasts. So while we’re inclined to say that everybody wins with either a Hennessey-tuned Mustang or Camaro, when the Mustang is a Boss 302, we’re going to lean towards that direction.

Tightly rolled up sleeves have been a Corps’ tradition. The sleeves rule was made at the same symposium as the bracelet approval, but the decision were unrelated, officials told Stars and Stripes military newspaper. The sleeves rule sparked an outrage in social media posts. On Twitter, they carried the hashtag #occupyHQMC. “This sleeves thing is really stu-

pid,” one person tweeted to the secretary of the Navy. “You need to step in and show some leadership.”

Military working dogs need your help too

Move America Forward, a grassroots pro-troop organization, is used to sending care packages to people, but after sending over 200 tons of said packages, they’re trying something new. Sending care packages for dogs. The care packages being sent include assorted rawhide bones, dog treats and chew toys. After 20 years, the Army has figured out how it wants to network soldiers together in a war zone — through something like a smartphone. It’s called Nett Warrior, and it’s got the Army very excited. There’s only one problem: defense companies already want to render it obsolete. Defense giant ITT picked just the right time to roll out its new secure smartphone. It debuted what it’s calling the GhostRider, pictured here, at the Army’s annual Washington, D.C. gala, known as the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) convention. The GhostRider isn’t really a phone — it’s just hosted on a commercial Android smartphone,

Military-backed scientists unveil robotic canine beast: ‘AlphaDog’

By Sara Yin  Some dog owners spend years grooming their pups into strong, obedient alpha dogs. But scientists? They just build them. A group of militaryfunded scientists from Boston has invented a dog-like robot, that can carry over 400 pounds on its back for 20 miles and on any sort of terrain. It uses computer vision and GPS to follow a leader, rather than require a remote-controlled driver to tell it where to go. Nicknamed “AlphaDog,” the prototype is the latest from the minds behind a four-year undertaking called BigDog, that’s being developed by Boston Dynamics and funded by DARPA and the U.S. Marine Corps. AlphaDog is officially called “LS3,” or the Legged Squad Support System.

Do you hear that? It’s the theme song to Rocky; pumping you up for the big event ahead. Ladies grab your spanx, hair extensions, speed dial your MAC cosmetic stylist and nail technicians! It’s about that time of year to start primping, plucking, teasing and squeezing into those ball gowns once again. For those seasoned wives it’s a time of anticipation imagining the countless anxiety-stricken faux pas that the event brings out in people. It is all a bit overwhelming for the first, second and even future balls because it is such a time honored traditional and formal event for the Marine Corps. We can all sweat bullets over which fork to use, do we stand when the Marines stand, who drinks first at the table, and do we all drink to the toast or just the Marines, where do we put that napkin so they don’t take my darn plate, foul language or no? Overwhelming can be an understatement but soak in all of the grandeur of the evening, go with the flow, have fun and take tons of pictures! Imagine it’s the night of your ball, it’s a brisk night in the city and as you walk up to the entrance of your birthday ball location the air has a hint of romance, pride and cigar smoke. Everyone seems upbeat but then again it’s cocktail hour. By the way it’s amazing to see what a little soap and some shirt stays can do right?! The ladies are eyeing each other from head to toe mentally keeping tabs for next ball season ideas. Then in she walks; whether a girlfriend or ‘date’ she’s out of her element there is no doubt. Combat boots, a black mini skirt, fish net stockings and a blouse with some form of black feather boa attached. There’s always at least one in the crowd and she was the one we’d waited on all evening. Please take it to heart we’re not trying to be mean but the men know what formal means so it can seem slightly intentional to send a lamb into the lion’s den. Some men are innocently clueless so for the record ladies please ask the dress code when invited to any Marine Corps function. Formal by no definition means a mini skirt, boas or denim of any kind. Military service The Stewart family had deep military roots as both grandfathers had fought in the Civil War, and his father had served during both the SpanishAmerican War and World War I. As a means to inspire his new group, Stewart flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on numerous missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. These missions went uncounted at Stewart’s orders. His “official” total is listed as 20 and is limited to those with the 445th. In 1944, he twice received the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in combat and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. After the war, Stewart served as Air Force Reserve commander of Dobbins Air Reserve Base in the early 1950s. In 1966, Brigadier General James Stewart flew as a non-duty observer in a B-52 on a bombing mission during the Vietnam War. At the time of his B-52 flight, he refused the release of any publicity regarding his participation, as he did not want it treated as a stunt, but as part of his job as an officer in the Air Force Reserve. After 27 years of service, Stewart retired from the Air Force on May 31, 1968. After his retirement, he was promoted to Major General by President Ronald Reagan.
