The facts about Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan
Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain touts a “9-9-9” tax reform plan
H
erman Cain stunned the Republican political establishment on Sept. 24, 2011, easily winning Florida’s Presidency 5 straw poll by trumpeting a platform of specific tax reforms he calls the “9-9-9 Plan.” The plan would eliminate the current tax system all together, replacing it with a 9 percent personal income tax, a 9 percent corporate income tax and a 9 percent national sales tax. “Our tax code is the 21st Century version of slavery. The IRS has become the overseer of the American people,” says Cain, 65, who made his name in the business world by turning around the Godfather’s Pizza chain as chief executive officer. He now serves as a motivational speaker and has authored books on leadership. Cain has yet to detail hyper-specific points about the 9-9-9 Plan, but we have a good idea of how it would generally function.

“INNOVATION

Legendary stage and screen actor of the 1910s through 1950s. He is most widely identified with his title role in the movie “Dracula” (1931). Born Bela Ferenc Dezso Blasko in Lugos, Banat, Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), he was the youngest of four children of a banker. Bela began his acting career on the stage in Hungary, playing in several Shakespearean plays (Hamlet, MacBeth, King Lear, and Richard III), and appeared in several silent movies of the Hungarian cinema under the stage name of Arisztid Olt.

Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan By Aaron Sharockman
The 9 percent income tax
The centerpiece of the 9-9-9 Plan is to eliminate the current, complicated income tax system — with its series of tax credits and deductions and its variety of tax rates based on income — and to replace it with a flat income tax. Cain’s flat 9 percent income tax also would replace payroll taxes, which all workers pay and that fund Medicare and Social Security, and would end the estate tax, which is a tax on inheritances. Currently, about 49.5 percent of all tax filers pay no income tax at all, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation, a respected bipartisan committee of Congress. Cain’s income tax would be collected equally for workers with two exceptions — taxpayers could claim a deduction for charitable contributions (we haven’t heard him discuss a limit) and taxpayers could earn a type of tax credit for living in an “empowerment zone,” which Cain has described as inner cities needing revitalization. While the result of this part of Cain’s plan would affect taxpayers differently, the flat income tax and the elimination of payroll taxes would result in shifting some of America’s tax burden, making some poorer
Americans pay more into the system while many middle- and upper-class Americans would pay less.
The 9 percent national sales tax
Cain’s national sales tax, in effect, would attempt to make up for the reduction of federal revenue by creating the 9 percent income tax. The national sales tax, which would help fund the federal government, would be on top of state and local sales taxes, which fund state and local government. In Florida, that would create a hypothetical tax rate of 15 percent in most parts of the state. In the Wall Street Journal, Cain said the national sales tax would be levied “on all new goods.” (A good question to ask would be whether services are exempted.) Most economists agree that a national sales tax would raise the relative tax burden on low- and middle-income earning taxpayers. “The main reason is that low- and middle-income households consume more of their income than high-income households do,” said William Gale, senior fellow for economic studies at the Brookings Institution. “Another way of saying that is high-income households save more of their income than low-income households do.”
The 9 percent corporate income tax
The nation’s corporate income tax now stands close to 40 percent, so on the surface Cain’s plan would be a huge reduction. But that’s only part of the story. The current tax structure includes credits and deductions that often reduce the rate at which businesses pay income taxes. According to the World Bank, businesses on average pay an effective tax rate of 27.6 percent. (Of course, some businesses pay at a far lower rate and some pay more.) Like Cain’s changes to the personal income tax structure, his plan for businesses would include eliminating many — though not all — of the credits and deductions businesses now enjoy.
How much tax revenue would the 9-9-9 plan generate?
The big question, after how much would you pay, is how much money would the plan generate for the federal government? It’s hard to say. For instance, Cain’s corporate income tax is based on gross income of businesses less investments, purchases from other businesses and all dividends paid to shareholders. But gross income figures are not always available, nor would be the value of the credits in Cain’s system. We also don’t know how spending habits might change if a national sales tax was enacted. Still, some people have at least attempted to quantify the impact. The Washington Times published an opinion piece Sept. 25, 2011, that attempts to put a number to the plan. The story used total personal income figures generated from University of New Mexico’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research to estimate that the 9 percent personal income tax would generate around $1.1 trillion a year (the figure appears to not include charitable deductions). Correction to ‘Sharia Law’
T
he Military Press deeply regrets implying in an article (“De facto sharia law in America” by Janet Levy) in last month’s issue that at least one of the examples the reporter cited, Carver Elementary School here in San Diego, provides special recesses, menus or prayer time during instructional hours. The school in fact responded immediately to expressed concerns when it absorbed a large number of Muslim students from a charter school that closed suddenly. Carver and the San Diego Unified School District resolved all issues within weeks in an appropriate and constitutional manner more than four years ago. Military Press also cannot confirm any veracity to the reporter’s citation of a $450,000 cost in public funds associated with issues at Carver Elementary. Because of these serious factual errors in the single local example the author cited, Military Press cannot vouch for any of the other examples referred to in the article. In the case of the Carver example, the San Diego Unified School District responded quickly and vigorously to help Carver administrators deal with the influx of students from a failing Arabic language charter school and respect students’ ability to engage in voluntary prayer. Within weeks, the district had established and posted new policies regarding religious observances on district campuses. Carver Elementary responded positively and promptly, agreeing to: • offer only mixed-gender classes • remind teachers and staff not to participate in praying with student • allow students to exercise their rights of religious freedom at school during non-instructional hours
• continue to offer the same menu it had for the past several years • continue to offer its Arabic language program in the same way the district offers other foreign language programs (German, Mandarin, and Spanish, for example). The school and district stated that no Carver teacher used the Quran for Arabic instruction and the district reiterated to all district employees that sacred texts or devotional readings are not be used in instruction • make it clear that during recess and lunch periods, students are free to play, study, talk, read, dream, or pray—the choice is each individual student’s. Contrary to the implications in “De facto sharia law in America,” the Carver Elementary School example is a positive reflection of how a public school can properly respect the important balance between church-state separation and our country’s promise of freedom of religion. The ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties, as well as a number of readers, contacted us about the serious factual and editorial flaws in the article. The ACLU was concerned that this same article has been circulating with no challenge to the inflammatory rhetoric and unchecked facts. The article clearly suggests that the Carver program demonstrated a preference for Muslims over Christians, rather than the challenge of reconciling children’s right to freedom of conscience and religion with the prohibition on school promotion of particular religious beliefs. The Carver example is actually a positive one in which the goal of respecting the religious rights of all without using the government to promote the religious beliefs of some was achieved.

Entertainment NBC wants to play with ‘Dolls’ By Liz Smith
“Who’s stoned? I am merely traveling incognito!”
That was but one of Patty Duke’s many incredible lines of dialogue in the 1967 movie version of Jackie Susann’s “Valley of the Dolls.” (As Neely O’Hara, a character not-so-loosely based on the uppers and downers of Judy Garland, Duke received the lion’s share of over-the-top screen time.) “Valley of the Dolls” was a novel, a feature film, a miniseries and a nighttime soap opera. It was a huge hit on bookshelves and in movie theaters, but the tale of three girls struggling through the swamp of show biz never clicked on the small screen. For the record, the girls in the movie were Miss Duke as the out-of-control movie star, Barbara Parkins as the moralizing fashion model Anne Welles, and the late Sharon Tate as the victimized sex symbol, Jennifer North. (And Miss Susan Hayward as the coarse, aging, dipsomaniacal stage legend, Helen Lawson.) But with the 1960s back in a big way on the small screen, via “Pan Am,” “The Playboy Club” and, but of course, “Mad Men,” TV is looking once again at “Valley of the Dolls.” It is NBC’s creators (they already have “The Playboy Club”) who are re-thinking “Dolls” and mulling its possibilities. What lurid possibilities! The language and sexual situations
that could only be hinted at in previous filmed incarnations would be allowed full flower now, though the derogatory names for gays would be excised in these politically correct times.) But if “Valley of the Dolls” goes on at 10 p.m. audiences would be guaranteed a lot of flesh and a lot of flash. In keeping with the retro rage, a new version of “Dolls” would probably be set back in the ‘60s, the era in which the novel ended and the movie was made — lots of mammoth hairpieces, extended eyeliner, miniskirts and frosted lips.

Commentary
The innovation deficit By Cal Thomas
T
he death of one of the great innovators of our time, or any time — Steve Jobs — brings a question asked by Pete Seeger in another context. To paraphrase: Where have all the (creative) people gone; long time passing. Jobs and fellow computer innovator Bill Gates represent if not a vanishing breed, then at least one that might be classified, were it an exotic animal, as endangered. In a country that used to encourage, promote, honor and reward innovation, why does there now seem to be far fewer innovators? In our past, they propelled us to higher standards of living and made life more enjoyable and comfortable. If you missed them while studying sex education in school, try Googling “inventors and innovators” and see what pops up. Once we applauded innovation. Now, politicians like President Obama, denounce the successful, maliciously labeling them “millionaires and billionaires,” as if success were a flu virus that we needed an inoculation to protect ourselves from. If we penalize and stigmatize success we are likely to get less of it. If we promote and encourage the principles that can lead to success, we are certain to get more successful people and the entire world will benefit as a result. Instead of admiring the principles that propelled people to become successful and encourages others to follow the example of a Steve Jobs, President Obama and so many in the liberal political establishment, treat them like shoplifters who have stolen what rightfully belonged to others, even though others may not have worked as hard, taken as many risks or invested as much capital. For one of many examples, look at the “Wall Street occupiers” who are clogging streets and buildings far from Wall Street. When you plant, water and fertilize a field of seed corn, you get a bumper crop. When you deny the field these basic elements, you get nothing. It is the same with inventiveness and innovation. Benjamin Franklin noted, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good at anything else.” We make excuses for failure and mediocrity and get more of both. Celebrity and sex occupy more and more of our time and attention, as opposed to hard work and commitment. Thomas Edison, another great innovator, observed, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Or, if you prefer Auntie Mame: “Life’s a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death.”
Why work when you can get a government check for doing nothing? Why be motivated to achieve when blaming someone else for your lack of achievement makes you feel better? Whatever happened to that little phrase I was taught as a child, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again? Today, the failure to succeed just once can lead to a discrimination lawsuit.
Instead of persistence when we fail to accomplish a task or satisfy a desire, we call a lawyer to sue someone for blocking our way. Accountants and bankers too often focus on quarterly earnings, not the long haul that sometimes requires spending on projects that don’t work until one stumbles upon a project that does. Alexander Graham Bell failed many times while attempting to transmit his voice over a wire until he finally succeeded. A quote attributed to Bell: “When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the ones which open for us.” Sometimes doors must be broken down, but, today, breaking down doors is more likely to get a person’s business success regulated and taxed to death by government. Steve Jobs was an innovator and pioneer in the grandest American tradition. He was a descendant of forward-looking people more common in America’s past, but in shorter supply today. Long time passing; long time ago. For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan
It used U.S. Census figures to determine spending in the retail industry — and calculated that a 9 percent national sales tax would generate around $380 billion. And, using a method that we don’t completely understand, they estimated that a 9 percent corporate income tax rate would generate $270 billion. In total, that’s about $1.8 trillion, though a rough, rough estimate. That number is about $360 billion less than what the government currently takes in — about $2.16 trillion. Cain, in his Wall Street Journal opinion piece, said the plan was designed to be revenue-neutral initially
but that revenues would increase as the economy grows. “These measures would free up capital, spur production, and incentivize risk-taking, thereby fueling the economy and creating jobs,” he wrote. Little has been written about the 9-9-9 Plan. Really, until now little has been written about Cain. The result of Florida’s straw poll figures — at least temporarily — to change both.

Whalen, a Marine Veteran is interested in shining the light on Veterans Day and reinvigorating this special/ commemorative day so America can really take time-out to realize what a monumental sacrifice that Veterans and active duty service members have made and (are making/continue to make) on a daily basis. North Carolina and Michigan State will be facing off on the deck of the Carl Vinson and James Worthy and Magic Johnson are honorary cocaptains. There is a high likelihood that President Obama will make an appearance along with many other high level officials. There will also be A-list entertainment during half time that is yet to be announced and the event is sponsored by Quicken Loans, State Farm Insurance, Sears, Navy Federal Credit and Norfolk Ship Yards. ‘’It is truly an honor to be part of such an historic event,” says filmmaker Steven C. Barber. “The Morale Foundation Story needs to be told, and I am excited to tell it.” Mr. Barber, who has seen some resent success with his films Return to Tarawa and Unbeaten, has dug in deep to tell this story. He just returned from two days out on the carrier where he interviewed Captain Bruce Lindsey and 25 of the ships crew from the super sonic F-18 Pilots to the hangar crew. “Landing on the aircraft carrier coming to an arrested stop, spending 48 hours on her and getting the amount of access that I did, and then being catapulted off, was without a doubt the highlight of my life,” says Barber. “The sacrifice that these 5000 sailors make on a daily basis is a site to behold. If everyone in America could see what our troops our doing on a daily basis, every day would be Veterans Day,” said Barber. Barber has already filmed the press conference and two days at sea, and will begin filming the building of the basketball court in early November all the way to game day on 11/11/11. There will be 7000 members of the military on the deck in the freshly built makeshift stadium, and many will be wounded warriors. This event is not open to the public and is invite only, but the public can watch it on ESPN live on game day. “Being part of something so historical and unprecedented is very exciting, and I look forward to working with The Morale Foundation on many more projects in the future,” said Barber. Morale has already signed The University of Connecticut and Arizona State for Veterans Day 2012 and has several other projects on the go. For more information go to www.carrierclassic.org or www.stevencbarber.blogspot.com.

The bye time is the right time Eric Weddle feels his time has arrived. In July he signed a five-year, $40 million contract and received a $13 million signing bonus and a base salary of $1 million this year. At free safety he is the leader of the defensive backfield and makes all the coverage calls in the secondary. Through the first five games of this 2011 season he leads the team with two interceptions, is currently second on the team in both tackles (21) and pass defensed (3) . Fresh off their 29-24 victory over the Denver Broncos, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr caught up with the fifth-year veteran to get his thoughts about a Chargers team who happen to be off to their best start since 2007. AG: You guys are in uncharted territory at 4-1, how does it feel? EW: Well we’re excited that this team is improving and this bye week comes at a great time for not only individual players getting healthy but also to work on certain areas that we need to get better at. It’s all about number five now – just getting that fifth win, so we have two weeks to prepare for the Jets and that’s all on our minds now. AG: I’m sure being 4-1 is great, but given the fact that you were able to get to that record despite all the injuries, is more impressive especially since you have started the past four seasons 2-3 with some relatively ‘healthy’ squads? EW: Yeah, we’re just finding ways to win and we’re relying on the team to get the win not so much individually or on one side of the ball. I think that’s the way this team has grown and matured where it’s not about individuals and not about stats. It’s not about ‘I’ where ‘I’ need to get picks (interceptions) so I can get this (accolades). It’s just get the win – find the win by any means necessary.
AG: When you guys don’t get an easy win or blowout you say “the other players get paid too.” What is it that the fans are missing or even us as the press – that we don’t understand when you don’t go out and dominate teams that are clearly struggling? EW: I mean … it’s just (battling) competitive people. I know that anytime that we’ve lost, we came back even harder the next game to try and get a win regardless of what happened the previous week. And the more each week goes on, the more and more you want to win and the more and more you want to play better. You know, you have some great players on every team and people don’t see the film. We see what happens in the games. We see what happens in the 3rd and 4th quarters when it’s a close game where a lucky tip or a pick happens and instead of a close game being down by seven you’re now behind 14. So we see what teams’ are and we see the matchups. We know that it’s a grind-itout NFL league and we would like to blow people out but it’s a fine line between blowing a team out and having a close game. EW: I think so because it builds character. It builds toughness where if you get into some tough situations you figure out how you’re going to act as a team – we’re not going to roll over as a team or buckle under the pressure. Rather, we’ll relish it. We’ve had four games where we’ve had to make a play in the 4th quarter to win those games. That builds teams; that builds chemistry; that builds who you are – there

are going to be tough games all along especially if you get in the playoffs. So it is definitely going to help you. AG: Marty (Schottenheimer) always preached not only one game at a time but also one play at a time because the team at that time lost a lot of games late in the 4th quarter under Mike Riley. How has that attitude helped you in these close games? EW: Definitely, because good, bad or indifferent you have to move on to the next play. Like myself, I dropped that pick yesterday and as bad as I felt at the time I got to move on. I can’t let that affect me because the ball might come at me again and I got to line up my guys. So that comes with age and it comes with experience… before, I would hang onto it the whole game and be mad at myself and (it) would kind of keep me down. Now, I just forget about and move on because the ball is going to come at me again and I’m going to have to make a play. I think as a whole, we have that mentality because if you hang on to it, another play is going to happen and it will be bad again. So you have to move on and make the most of that play because that one play could be the difference in the game. AG: With Bob Sanders out for the season, how do you focus on doing just your job as the free safety without messing up a called defense by trying to help others in the secondary?
EW: I just have to stay within myself and don’t do more than I’m told or asked of. I sometimes get out of my realm just to cover up and help other guys but in the long run for myself and for the defense I need to just focus in on me. I can do more in certain situations because I know the defense, I know my responsibilities and I know what the other guys are doing … I’ve been around for a while and I can cover up for other guys but sometimes that can hurt us. So I just have to know (my assignments) and be smart about it and do what I’m told to do. AG: When you were drafted out of Utah did you ever dream you would be in this situation where you sign the type of contract that makes you one of the highest paid safeties in the NFL in just five years into your career? EW: No I didn’t. I’m just blessed, happy to be here and excited. I want to continue to get better, continue to be a great player and continue to believe in this defense. AG: Do you feel any pressure to live up to that contract? EW: No – it’s great pressure. I relish it because you want to be great for your own reasons and for this team and your teammates. But there is no added pressure because I want to be great and I think it might have eased it (pressure) a little knowing that the
eyes are on me now and that’s fine because I wanted that – now go out there and play like it. People recognized me as a great free safety and I’ve known that – let’s go out there and do it. AG: Last question – a lot of people criticize this team for not having that killer instinct and finishing games. What is it going to take for you guys to get to that next level? EW: We just need to keep working and know the situations we’re in. It’s not a lack of effort or not trying, we understand that we have to put teams away – it’s a work in progress and we’ll keep working on it. We’ll probably be in that situation again and hopefully we’ll capitalize on it.

BANKCRUPT
HOW DID THEY BLOW IT! In 2008, ESPN ranked Allen Iverson the fifth-greatest shooting guard in National Basketball Association history. He currently holds the sixth regular-season career scoring average of all time, as well as a playoff average that’s second only to the mighty Michael Jordan. Iverson’s mansion in Cherry Hills, Colo., went into foreclosure in March 2011. Purchased for almost $4 million, the six-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot home has every amenity, including a wine cellar, seven fireplaces, and even a panic room. The home sold in April 2011 for $2.5 million, more than $1 million less than the original purchase price.
Sergei Fedorov is a Russian ice hockey player with successful stints in four National Hockey League teams. He played with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals, but it was his time with the Detroit Red Wings that made him stand out. In June 2010, the PrivateBank and Trust filed foreclosure notices against two separate properties he owned in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. One, a 4,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home with a Jacuzzi, a gym, and a sauna, went into foreclosure in 2011. Fedorov blames both foreclosures on his former financial adviser, whom he successfully sued for $60 million.

According to Steve Wyche of NFL. com, JaMarcus Russell was the biggest draft bust in NFL history. Wyche is not alone in that opinion. The Huffington Post went there, too, and Bill Williamson of ESPN called him “extremely disappointing.” These summations would be bad enough on their own, but the galling fact is the Oakland Raiders had such unreasonably high expectations they gave him a $61 million contract with $32 million guaranteed. Russell wasn’t able to hang onto the money after his 2010 release from the team, however, and one of the casualties of his insolvency was the $3 million mansion he had bought during the good times
Dr. J remains a legend almost 25 years after his retirement. But sadly he was not immune to falling on hard times, and in December 2010 those hard times cost him his house. Erving had purchased the 6,500-square-foot, five-bedroom St. George, Utah, home in 2006 and built a basketball court on the property that was decorated with the colors and logo of the Philadelphia 76ers. He moved out in January 2010 and listed the home for $2 million, but never found anyone to buy it. Erving defaulted on the mortgage and the home, which he described as “substantially underwater,” went into foreclosure.

Horror Movies Frankenstein
Based on the Mary Shelley novel about a mad scientist who reanimates dead tissue, this is a lasting film that helped to define the horror genre early on. Featuring Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, it is a masterpiece of mood. The characterization of the monster makes him utterly human, making for a rare sympathetic character in horror cinema. Who can forget the famous line “It’s alive!” or the monster throwing a young girl into the pond when he runs out of flower petals?
Halloween
The film that gave birth to the modern American slasher film. Unfortunately, it also gave birth to some pretty poor imitators and an endless string of ‘80s horror sequels that could never live up
to their originals. But that’s besides the point. Director John Carpenter made a star and scream queen out of Jamie Lee Curtis and crafted a frightening scare-fest that helped boyfriends get closer to their girlfriends in theaters and living rooms to this day. It remains the best work Carpenter ever did, and that score is positively unforgettable and creepy. Maybe best of all, the film created an iconic boogeyman out of a repainted Captain Kirk mask. I know I always found Shatner pretty scary.
Rosemary’s Baby
Featuring a young and vibrant Mia Farrow (Woody Allen’s longtime wife), Rosemary’s Baby is the horrifying account of a woman who believes she has been impregnated by Satan himself.
You know how to earn your stripes. But don’t forget: the more you learn, the more you earn.
Trapped in an apartment building with overzealous neighbors and boxed in by a demanding husband, this is almost more of a psychological thriller than horror film. Directed by Roman Polanski before his exile from America, it stands with Chinatown as one of his great contributions to cinema.
The Exorcist
Faithfully based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 best-selling novel of the same name, The Exorcist tells a story of a young girl (Linda Blair) who’s possessed by demons. Masterfully directed by William Friedkin (previously known for The French Connection), the film features horrifying and sensational scenes, some nauseating special effects (pea soup, anyone?), and great acting (12-year-old Blair steals the show, while Jason Miller and Max von Sydow also turn in wonderful performances, as the preists attempting to exorcise the demons). The film’s creepy title tune, “Tubular Bells,” became a #1 single

on the Billboard charts, and The Exorcist went on to win two Academy Awards (for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound) and another eight nominations, including Best Picture.
The Shining
An absolute masterpiece of atmosphere and tension, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining isn’t merely the top choice on IGN’s list of horror movies, but my personal genre favorite: Jack Nicholson comes unhinged – perhaps permanently – as the failed novelist and hotel manager who succumbs to madness after spending a long winter cooped up in the creepy confines of the Overlook Hotel, and offers one of cinema’s most indelible portraits of suspense ever created. Unlike so many others on this list, Kubrick’s film is surprisingly light on gory action; the first time I watched it I had to stop it halfway through, and nothing of note had yet happened. But once it shifts into high gear, racheting anticipation with multiple storylines including Jack’s wife, child, and a helpful hotel employee played by Scatman Crothers, there’s no suppressing its irresistible, nail-biting allure: from the dismembered twins to the disguised, canoodling partygoers in Room 237, The Shining offers frights that last long after the film is finished.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN D
r. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) is a respected lecturer at an American medical school and engaged to the tightly wound Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn). He becomes exasperated when anyone brings up the subject of his grandfather, the infamous mad scientist whose experiments in re-animation led to the creation of a monster. To disassociate himself from his legacy, Frederick insists that his surname be pronounced “Fronk-en-steen.” When a solicitor informs him that he has inherited his family’s estate in Transylvania, Frederick travels to Europe to inspect the property. At the Transylvania train station, he is met by a hunchbacked, bulging-eyed servant named Igor (Marty Feldman), who is there to drive Frederick in a wagon to the Frankenstein estate, but not before mocking Frederick’s pretentions by insisting that his name be pronounced as “eye-gore.” Accompanying Igor in the wagon is another servant, a lovely young woman named Inga (Teri Garr). Upon arrival at the estate, Frederick meets the forbidding housekeeper Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman), whose name causes horses to rear up in fright. Though his family legacy has brought shame and ridicule, Frederick becomes increasingly intrigued about his grandfather’s work, especially after
Inga assists him in discovering the secret entrance to his grandfather’s laboratory. Upon reading his grandfather’s private journals, Frederick is so transformed that he decides to resume his grandfather’s experiments in reanimating the dead. He and Igor resort to robbing the grave of a recently executed criminal, and Frederick sets to work experimenting on the large corpse. Matters go awry, however, when Igor is sent to steal the brain of a deceased revered scientist; startled by lightning, he drops the correct brain on the floor and instead returns with an “abnormal” brain, which Frederick unknowingly transplants into the corpse. Soon, Frederick is ready to re-animate his creature (Peter Boyle), who is elevated on a platform to the roof of the laboratory during a lightning storm. Eventually, electrical charges bring the creature to life. With Frederick’s help, the Monster makes its
first halting steps, but, frightened by Igor lighting a match, attacks Frederick and must be sedated. Upon being asked whose brain was obtained, Igor confesses that he supplied “Abby Normal’s” brain (the brain he stole had been labeled “abnormal”), whereupon Frederick attempts to strangle him.

Is it Gossip and Gospel? T
oday, I would like to touch on a matter that I have been seeing a lot of lately. Look at all those throughout the country protesting and unhappy with others and what they feel is happening in our world. It happens in many areas of our lives. It happens in the playgrounds of our schoolyards, our work places and even in our families. It seems all too common a practice today for people to say things about their friends, family or neighbors that are very critical of any peculiarities or weaknesses. Looking for such differences divides us from those who could often use our friendship. Maybe we should follow the example of the Special Olympics program, which teach those with handicaps of various kinds to look at their similarities rather than the differences. It might help us all to be a bit happier. Most of us would agree that the reasons why we shouldn’t be so judgmental are pretty obvious. We can’t really know what is in the heart of another. We can’t always know the true motives, although we tend to impute motives to most every action we witness. However, the motives may actually be quite pure, while we are thinking they
are improper. How do we do this? With all our weaknesses, imperfections, and frailties, how do we put ourselves into the position of being a judge? It is said that life requires the exercise of good judgment. We judge if we can afford a new purchase, if we have time for a project; we judge our own success at achieving our goals, or improving our behavior. In these instances judgment is in its proper place. While we often need to make judgments that help ensure our own safety of that of our children, we must still be careful that we do not follow up these judgments with gossip. We would be wise to remember that the further out of line we tend to be, the more likely, and even more inclined, we are to look for those weaknesses and imperfections in those around us. We may find ourselves trying to rationalize and even justify our own faults, instead of trying to improve on ourselves. We should beware of confessing other’s sins, when we need to work on our own. Gossip and talking about others is one of the worst forms of judging others. The tongue is the most dangerous, destructive and deadly

weapon available to man. We have seen this to some degree in the propaganda war we have had to fight in The War on Terrorism. With all the different players in the war, we have been having a tougher fight countering the dissenter’s verbal barrage of lies and deceit. It would be wise if we would determine now that in the heart of the campaign we call life; we will not indulge or participate in the harmful gossip that we so often hear. We must not rail against our brother or sister and accuse them of things we do not really know that they have done. We would be better to stand on a higher principle. Only by suspending judgment, guarding our tongues and what we say to whom, will we exhibit what most really want, real charity. I would like to end with a story to illustrate this concept. “A peasant with a troubled conscience went to a monk for advice. He said he had circulated a vile story about a friend, only to find that the story was not true. “If you would make peace with your conscience,” said the monk, “you must first fill a bag with goose down, go to every yard in the village, drop in each one of them one feather.” The peasant did as he was told. Then he came back to the monk and said he had done penance for his folly. “Not yet,” replied the monk. “Take the bag, go to those yards again, and gather up every feather that had been dropped.” “But the wind must have blown them all away,” said the peasant. “Yes, my son,” said the monk. “And so it is with your vile words. Words and goose down are quickly dropped, but try as hard as you will; you can never get them back.” It has been said, “Gossip and Gospel are both found in the dictionary on the same page and the first three letters are the same, but how different their meanings – Gossip is defined as idle talk; Gospel is defined as glad tidings. How wonderful it would be if everyone spread the Gospel instead of gossip.” It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31 Until next time, may God bless you and God bless our great nation. Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive another “Economic Stimulus” payment. This is indeed a very exciting program, and I’ll explain it by using a Q&A format: Q. What is an “Economic Stimulus” payment? A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers. Q. Where will the government get the money? A. From taxpayers. Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgen of it. Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy. Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China? A. Shut up. Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the U.S. economy by spending your stimulus check wisely: • If you spend the stimulus money at WalMart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka .. • If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs. • If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, Taiwan or China... • If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala .... • If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea ... • If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan ... • If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

The Cold War
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 321
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 321 (VMFA-321) was established Feb. 1, 1943 at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, as a unit of Marine Aircraft Group 31, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron consisted of F/A-18 Hornets, also known as “Hell’s Angels.” It participated in action in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific during World War II after a crash course in tactics and maneuvers. It was then transferred to the Marine Forces Reserve. The squadron was decommissioned on September 11, 2004.
VMF-321 CO and ace Major Overend in 1945
First Lieutenant Robert B. See made the squadron’s first “kill” four days after arriving on the island. While in the Solomon’s, the ‘Hell’s Angels” amassed a record of 39 kills of Japanese aircraft and an additional 11 probables, with only eight aircraft lost. At one time the squadron was scoring at least one kill and/or one probable a day with its F4U Corsair aircraft. Captain J. R. Norman once downed four planes in a single day. Major Edmund F. Overend, the squadron’s Commanding Officer, who had come to the squadron with 5.83 credited kills from his services with the American Volunteer Group in China, accounted for three more confirmed kills. The squadron transferred north to the area around Guam, where pilots took over “milk run” bombings of neighboring islands and played a major role in knocking out Japanese bases from which attacks against American bomber bases were being launched.
After the war, the squadron returned home and was deactivated on Jan. 28, 1946. Early in 1946 a group of Marine aviators in the Washington, D.C. area began organizing a reserve fighting squadron from the ranks of pilots, officers, and enlisted members who had served together in the war as VMF-321. This new VMF-321 became an organized Marine Corps Reserve fighting squadron in July 1946 at Naval Air Station Anacostia Maryland, and was assigned 14 Corsair aircraft similar to the ones flown by the squadron during the war. On April 1, 1949, Marine Fighting Squadron 321 was redesignated Marine Fighter Squadron 321. The squadron was placed on alert January 13, 1951 and was activated on March 1, 1951 flying the F8F Bearcat during the Korean War. The 164-man unit began an intensive training program under the command of Major George Robertshaw, in preparation for deployment to the Far East. The squadron did not go to Korea as a unit. Instead it was declared an augmentation squadron and its members were assigned to regular Marine units to fill empty billets.

hen World War I broke out, he became an infantry lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army, being wounded three times. In 1917, he married Ilona Szmik, but she died without children three years later. In 1919, Bela moved to Germany and was well received in German cinema, appearing in “The Death Caravan” (1920) and other films. Following the death of his wife, in 1921 he emigrated to the U.S., and worked as a laborer before being spotted in the title role of the 1927 stage play “Dracula.” When Universal Pictures decided to film “Dracula” (1931), he had to campaign vigorously for the opportunity to get the same role. When the movie, “Dracula” (1931) became successful, Lugosi was given a studio contract with Universal; that same year, he became a U.S. citizen. In 1929, he married a wealthy San Francisco widow named Beatrice Weeks, their marriage lasted only three days, and their divorce papers named actress Clara Bow as the cause of the breakup; the notoriety quickly brought him to Hollywood film attention. Due in part to his heavy accent and
his success in Dracula, he was soon typecast in such B-horror films as “Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1932), “Chandu the Magician” (1932), “Mark of the Vampire” (1935), “The Raven” (1935), “The Invisible Ray” (1936), “Son of Frankenstein” (1939), “The Black Cat” (1941), “Night Monster” (1942), “Voodoo Man” (1944), and “Zombies on Broadway” (1945). He was often paired with Boris Karloff, an actor most famous as the Frankenstein monster, and despite their rivalry, they remained good friends. In the 1940s, he was reduced to making B-films, and after suffering a back injury, he became addicted to morphine. On the set, he would disguise his addiction by sipping burgundy wine. He ended up making movies for Ed Wood, considered by many as the worst director in Hollywood history, and he died while shooting the now-cult classic film “Plan 9 from Outer Space” (1959 – released after his death). He died of a drug related heart attack in his Los Angeles home, a copy of the script for “Final Curtain,” written by director Ed Wood, in his lap. He was buried wearing one of his many Dracula capes, per the request of his fifth wife, Hope Lininger, and his son, Bela Jr. At the time of his death, he was so poor that his family could not afford to bury him, and his friend Frank Sinatra quietly

Master of Darkness
DID YOU KNOW? Some unusual facts about Poe, the “Enigmatic Master of Darkness”
• Poe wrote a fabricated news story of a balloon trip across the ocean to garner attention and publicity in New York City. • Poe was a champion for higher wages for writers and international copyright law, as his writings were continuously published without him getting credit or compensation. • Prior to becoming Poe’s wife at the age of 13, his female cousin Virginia acted as a courier, delivering letters to Poe’s lady loves. • From 1949 to 2009, a mysterious
figure has left a half-empty bottle of cognac and 3 roses on Poe’s grave every day on his birthday. • Poe formulated rules for the short story, including that it should relate a complete action and take place within one day in one place. • Poe was deeply interested by cryptography, the creation and translation of secret codes, and was very proud of his ability to translate them. He would chAllange readers of various publications where he worked to send him codes to decipher and, by all accounts, he seemed able to unlock the secrets to any he received. • Poe’s lifelong dream of owning and operating his own publication never came to fruition. • Poe met with Charles Dickens while Dickens was in the US on a lecture tour, and solicited his help with getting published in England—nothing ever came of it. • Poe’s grandfather was an important figure in the American Revolution, contributing a large sum of his own money to outfit local branches of the Continental Army. His wife, Poe’s grandmother, personally sewed over 500 soldiers’ uniforms for Lafayette’s troops as they passed through Baltimore. • Poe joined the Army in 1827, lying to recruiters about his age and name. He also published his first collection of poetry during this time. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major. • Poe experienced periods of extreme destitution, often having to burn his furniture to keep warm during the winter.

udrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. She really was blue-blood from the beginning with her father, a wealthy English banker, and her mother, a Dutch baroness. After her parents divorced, Audrey went to London with her mother where she went to a private girls school. Later, when her mother moved back to the Netherlands, she attended private schools as well. While vacationing with her mother in Arnhem, Holland, Hitler’s army took over the town. It was here that she fell on hard times during the Nazi occupation. Audrey suffered from depression and malnutrition. After the liberation, Audrey went to a ballet school in London on a scholarship and later began a modeling career. As a model, she was graceful and, it seemed, she had found her niche in life — until the film producers came calling. After being spotted modeling by a producer, she was signed to a bit part in the European film Dutch in Seven Lessons (1948) in 1948. Later, she had a speaking role in the 1951 film, Young Wives’ Tale (1951) as Eve Lester. . Audrey gained immediate prominence in the US with her role in Roman Holiday (1953) in 1953. This film turned out to be a smashing success as she won an Oscar as Best Actress. This gained her enormous popularity and more plum roles. One of the reasons for her popularity was the fact that she was so elf-like and had class, unlike the sexgoddesses of the time. Roman Holiday (1953) was followed by another similarly wonderful performance in the 1957 classic Funny Face (1957). Sabrina (1954), in 1954, for which she received another Academy nomination, and Love in the Afternoon (1957), in 1957, also garnered rave reviews. In 1959, she received yet another nomination for her role in The Nun’s Story (1959). Audrey reached the pinnacle of her career when she played Holly Golightly in the delightful film Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) in 1961. For this she received another nomination. She scored commercial success again in the espionage caper Charade (1963). One of Audrey’s most radiant roles was in the fine production of My Fair Lady (1964) in 1964. Her co-star, Rex Harrison, once was asked to identify his favorite leading lady. Without hesitation, he replied, “Audrey Hepburn in ‘My Fair Lady.’” She was named to People’s magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. Her last film was Always (1989) in 1989. Audrey Hepburn died on January 20, 1993 in Tolochnaz, Switzerland, from appendicular cancer. She had made a total of 31 high quality movies. Her elegance and style will always be remembered in film history as evidenced by her being named in Empire magazine’s “The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time.” 24 October 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

Julia Roberts is one bad apple in ‘Snow White’ movie By Liz Smith
“Stay hungry. Stay foolish!” This was Steve Jobs’ advice to the aspiring young.
Perhaps the only person in the world who wasn’t somehow moved by the death of Apple’s creative genius, was the former half-term governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. Sarah’s decision not to run for president was vastly overshadowed on Wednesday, when word came of Jobs’ death from cancer at age 56. Even Fox News, though they didn’t drop their nightly lineup to pay homage to Mr. Jobs — as did CNN, MSNBC and CNBC — seemed muted in their coverage of Sarah’s momentous decision. Had Mrs. Palin stayed too long at the Fox fair? We probably have not heard the last of her perpetual cries of victimization. Julia Roberts isn’t known for her bad-girl roles. Despite all the nasty tricks she played on Cameron Diaz in “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” she ended up doing the right thing in the end, encouraged by pal Rupert Everett. But it was fun to see Julia go to the dark side. Well, fans of Miss Roberts will have more fun next March when her “Snow White” movie opens. (Actually, that’s not the title, or the full title. There are other Snow White-themed films pending, so producers are trying to come up with a title that won’t con-
Hey you guys out there. How many of you remember Britain’s great TV series “The Avengers”? You can take your Cat Women, who are constantly being re-created for new stars — I believe Anne Hathaway is the latest to try on the whiskers. And there are memorable “women kicking butt” in shows such as “Xena: Warrior Princess,” which starred Lucy Lawless
on TV from 1995 to 2001. Then there is always that liberating “Wonder Woman,” often reincarnated these days and being evoked via fashion’s Diane von Frustenberg. But Diana Rigg in “The Avengers” was the greatest. This divine and supremely charming actress is today 73 years old! Happy Birthday, Mrs. Peel! JOHNNY DEPP looks better than
he has in a long time, on the cover of the new Vanity Fair. Just shows what a haircut and a shave can do! But he got himself into trouble when he said that he found photo sessions invasive: “You just feel like you’re being raped, somehow.” He has been compelled to apologize. Political correctness — their police force is omnipresent. (Bevare!)

fuse audiences.) In any case, Julia’s turn as the Evil Queen is much anticipated. She’s just plain bad and there is no redemption in store. She hands out poisoned apples, for goodness sake! Lily Collins, who plays innocent Snow White, was impressed by Julia’s ability to get into character. She told People magazine: “Off camera she is so down to earth and sweet. We’d be shooting and she’d being extremely horrible to me — in character — and once they yell ‘cut’ the first thing she says is, ‘Are you OK? I’m sorry. I hate being mean to you.’” In fact, Julia told her director, Tarsem Singh: “I feel like I’m being mean to Bambi!” (Miss Collins is only 22, and Singh describes her appeal as “Liz Taylor meets Audrey Hepburn.”) I can’t wait to see Julia — one of the least vain actresses in the world — doing her “mirror, mirror on the wall” bit, or some variation of that.

Custom boat features leather seats, Apple TV, a wifi hotspot Seeing a Chevy Corvette tearing up a freeway is a common site all over the United States, but we never thought we’d see one riding the waves. Performance boat manufacturer Marine Technology, Inc. wanted to change that, and the result is an insanely powerful aquatic speed demon called the ZR48 — a boat that boasts neck-snapping speeds and a massive price tag.
But it’s not just the outside that will appeal to Chevy diehards, the interior has been given an equally stunning treatment. After entering through custom gull wing doors, the driver is treated to a true Corvette cockpit, complete with an original shifter and steering wheel. Leather and suede seating provides room for six, and a 8,000 watt sound system ensures that the party never stops. If you feel like enjoying some quality programming while cruising the open sea, you can switch on the builtin LCD displays which come complete with Apple TV and a mobile wifi hotspot. iPad owners get additional treatment with a custom dock and charging station. The accessories alone are powered by a standalone Fischer die-

Built using parts from a genuine Corvette ZR1, the ZR48 oozes style. Its sleek body lines are undeniably auto-inspired, and great touches like genuine taillights and Corvette badges make it a treat to look at. The boat’s body is built out of lightweight carbon fiber, which is as strong as metal but much lighter.
ZR48 and custom trailer
The 48-foot monster boat comes with a special, tricked-out trailer to suit its extra wide stance. The transporter features a total of 5 TVs, a DVD player, LED display lighting, and matching paint scheme. In transit, the boat is situated sideways on the trailer to avoid the need for special highway permits. As you may have guessed, the customer nature of the ZR48 and its luxurious touches demand top dollar, and a price of no less than $1.7 million is being asked. The one-of-a-kind boat will undoubtedly make you the star of whatever marina you frequent, and wealthy Corvette fans will surely find its charm hard to resist.

Get Bill to the Ball
By Renee C. Lee, Houston Chronicle An orphaned puppy turned Marine mascot soon will make his way from Afghanistan to the United States to be reunited with his platoon — just in time for the Marine Corps ball in November. Bill, a mutt, was rescued by the Houston-based 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, while 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company, was on patrol. He was the lone survivor of a litter of six puppies when the reservists adopted him July 13. Bill was just 9 days old. His eyes were still shut. Marine Reserve Sgt. Jon Staffen made it his mission to raise the necessary funds to bring Bill to Staffen’s home in Dayton, in Liberty County. Staffen and his platoon returned to Houston on Saturday after a sevenmonth combat tour. Staffen said he and the other Marines kept Bill in a box that had held ready-to-eat meals, and had a 24-hour rotation to care for and feed the frail pup. They used a medical syringe and the finger of a plastic glove to feed him cow’s milk, the sergeant said.
“It was really comical at times,” Staffen admitted. “We got caught up in taking care of him. Here we are, Marine grunts, cheering when he took his first steps.” They didn’t want to leave Bill behind at the end of their deployment, but there were military rules against taking him home. CBS correspondent Lara Logan offered to help them out, and flew the dog via military air to Kabul, where he’s been staying in a rescue shelter. Staffen said he has raised more
than the $3,500 he’ll need to get Bill to the United States. He’s now working on Bill’s travel arrangements. The goal is to get the dog transported in time for the Nov. 5 ball in Houston, where Bill is expected to be the guest of honor.
Organization donates books to Marines, families
By Cpl. Jovane M. Henry, Camp Pendleton Public Affairs Office Members of Read All Over, an organization promoting peace and literacy through book drives, donated more than 1,000 books to the Camp Pendleton Officer Wives Club, Sept. 16. Founded in 2001 by Brant Whiting (pictured here), then 10 years old, Read All Over honors the memory of Deora Bodley, a passenger on Flight 93 in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. After discovering that Bodley loved reading and helping others, he partnered with other young children and began collecting and donating books. For more information, or if you are interested in donating books or time, visit Read All Over’s website at www. readallover.org.

Elsewhere around town, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter features the Haunted Hotel where guests wander through rooms and hallways haunted by crazies from Hollywood’s best horror films. The annual Monster Bash occurs from 6 p.m. ‘til midnight on Oct. 29. At Balboa Park’s Haunted Trail of Terror, guests traverse an outdoor maze of walkways patrolled by creepy spooks and spirits. Additionally, at a park-wide Halloween observance on October 29, children 12 and under get free admission (with a paid adult) to participating museums. There will be a raffle at the visitors’ center, a doggie costume contest, prizes and booths along the Prado. Find out more at www.balboapark.org. Also on Oct. 29, Hillcrest offers Nightmare on Normal Street, its annual Halloween street party and costume contest, held at the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Old Town’s Whaley House, construct-
ed in 1856 on a former gallows site, is believed to be one of the most haunted houses in America. “Most Haunted” offers nightly walking tours Thursday through Sunday in this historic neighborhood. Led by a real ghost hunter, the tour is based on the ghost hunter’s own paranormal experiences and research. Learn more about these monstrous offerings at www.sandiego.org; type Halloween in the search box. And while you are in Old Town, grab a ticket for Cygnet Theater’s Little Shop of Horrors (extended through Oct. 2). It’s a fitting way to celebrate Halloween early and Audrey is a hoot. Tennessee William’s classic, The Glass Menagerie, plays next. For their full schedule, logon to www.cygnettheater. com or call the box office at 1-619-3371525. It’s a great venue and there are no bad seats in this comfy theater.

The monster of all extravaganzas can be found at the 39th annual Halloween Haunt where “Every year there is more to fear.” The month of October is witching season and dedicated to really scary stuff at Knott’s Berry Farm. It is the largest and longest running Halloween spectacular of its kind. All 160-acres of the park are transformed into your worst nightmares with 13 themed mazes, seven live shows and four scare zones. The latter features hundreds of free-roaming monsters, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, freaks, mutants, maniacs and other beasts lurking in the fog to scare unsuspecting guests. There is even an add-on themed “boo-ffet” dinner followed by early entry into the park. For the younger set, Snoopy’s Costume Party in Camp Snoopy is an alternative daytime non-scare celebration of Halloween rather than the fear-focused weekends. This special family oriented experience includes friendly monsters, a kid-friendly maze, crafts and trick-or-treat stations. FEED THE CHILDREN CFC Contributions Help FEED THE CHILDREN Provide Relief to U.S. Children and Families
In 2010, U.S. military personnel and Federal civilian employees pledged more than $1.1 million to Feed The Children through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Your generosity plays an important role in helping Feed The Children to continue our mission of providing hope and resources for those without life’s essentials. Feed The Children is a Christian, international, nonprofit relief organization with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In FY 2010, Feed The Children distributed more than 133 million pounds of food and other essentials to children and their families in all 50 states and internationally. While many people associate Feed The Children with our international efforts, they may not realize that the majority of our work is done right here in the United States. These domestic efforts consist primarily of distributing food and other essentials to children and families in need. Feed The Children works tirelessly to solicit donations of food and supplies from corporations and manufacturers. In order to distribute these goods efficiently, we work with a network of partner agencies – including food pantries, homeless shelters and churches – in all 50 states. Donations from the CFC help to cover the cost of transporting food and other essentials to our six regional distribution centers and to our partner agencies. Because of your charitable contributions, we are able to provide these products to our partner agencies free of charge. In turn, they distribute the products free of charge to children and families with the greatest need
within their communities. As rates of unemployment in the United States reach record levels, and increasing numbers of our military personnel are deployed in conflicts around the world, Feed The Children’s vision that no child or family goes to bed hungry is more crucial today than ever before. Since 2002, Feed The Children has dispatched more than 946,000 pounds of food and essentials to military bases in 13 states across the nation, to help service families who are hardpressed to make ends meet during this difficult time. Additionally, we have shipped nearly 168,000 pounds of supplies – including personal hygiene items, books and CDs – directly to our soldiers serving in Iraq. In February 2009, we established the Americans Feeding Americans (AFA) Caravan to help children and families affected by the economic downturn. As of August 2011, the caravan had provided assistance to more than 265,000 families in some of the hardest-hit communities across the nation. In 2010 alone, more than 4,000 military families received food and personal care products from the AFA Caravan. Additionally in 2010, Feed The Children donated more than half a million dollars to national and regional non-profits assisting military families across the United States. The donations supported groups – including San Diego Armed Services YMCA, USO and Wounded Warrior Project – that assist enlisted personnel, the wounded, veterans and their families. Special initiatives such as our military relief efforts and Americans Feeding Americans are only possible because of the kindness of our donors, including those who contribute through the CFC. Thank you again for your support.

Military History The Cold War
See made the squadron’s fi rst “kill” four days after arriving on the island. Overend, the squadron’s Commanding Officer, who had come to the squadron with 5.83 credited kills from his services with the American Volunteer Group in China, accounted for three more confi rmed kills.
Instead it was declared an augmentation squadron and its members were assigned to regular Marine units to fi ll empty billets.

tack Squadron 321 (VMA-321). On July 1, 1962, the squadron again became VMF-321 when it began flying the FJ-4B Fury. This was followed by a transition to the F-8 Crusader in January 1965. In October 1973. a new paint scheme, consisting of a black dorsal and vertical stabilizer prompted a temporary nickname changed to the “Black Barons.” However, the squadron shortly returned to the “Hell’s Angels” adding a pitchfork running through the “ MG” on the vertical stabilizer.
An F-4S of VMFA-321 at NAS Miramar in 1987
Marine Fighter Squadron 321 was redesignated Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA-321 in December 1973, when it became the fi rst Marine Air Reserve squadron to receive the F-4 Phantom II aircraft. The designation, which remains today, indicated the dual fighter/attack mission. Aircrew and maintenance personnel began preparing for the new aircraft long before its arrival, and on Jan. 15, 1974, VMFA-321 made its fi rst Phantom fl ight. Reservists from VMFA-321 appeared in a fi lm produced for recruiting personnel into the Marine Corps Air Reserves. The fi lm, which featured actor and former Marine Christopher George, was produced in the summer of 1976 at Andrews Air Force Base by
J. Walter Thompson, which has held the Marine Corps recruiting account contract for decades. In 1985, VMFA-321 operated twelve F-4S Phantom aircraft and accumulated 12,344 mishap free hours. During the calendar year the squadron flew nearly 3,000 hours in support of a demanding aircrew training program. VMFA-321 was nominated for the Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award 1990–2004
An F/A-18A of VMFA-321, 2004
In 1991, VMFA-321 stood down the Phantom and commenced transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet. During 1996, they deployed to Norway and Scotland. 1998 found them back in Scotland. 1999 sent the Hells Angels to Egypt. 2000 was a third and fi nal deployment to Scotland. 2001 saw the squadron report to NAF Washington on September 12 without prior notice. The squadron reported mission ready with 6 aircraft and pilots ready for CAP missions and actually launched sorties in support of what would become Operational Noble Eagle. The squadron was chosen for deactivation as part of the Department of the Navy.

hen World War I broke out, he became an infantry lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army, being wounded three times. In 1917, he married Ilona Szmik, but she died without children three years later. In 1919, Bela moved to Germany and was well received in German cinema, appearing in “The Death Caravan” (1920) and other fi lms. Following the death of his wife, in 1921 he emigrated to the U.S., and worked as a laborer before being spotted in the title role of the 1927 stage play “Dracula.” When Universal Pictures decided to fi lm “Dracula” (1931), he had to campaign vigorously for the opportunity to get the same role. When the movie, “Dracula” (1931) became successful, Lugosi was given a studio contract with Universal; that same year, he became a U.S. citizen. In 1929, he married a wealthy San Francisco widow named Beatrice Weeks, their marriage lasted only three days, and their divorce papers named actress Clara Bow as the cause of the breakup; the notoriety quickly brought him to Hollywood fi lm attention. Due in part to his heavy accent and
his success in Dracula, he was soon typecast in such B-horror fi lms as “Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1932), “Chandu the Magician” (1932), “Mark of the Vampire” (1935), “The Raven” (1935), “The Invisible Ray” (1936), “Son of Frankenstein” (1939), “The Black Cat” (1941), “Night Monster” (1942), “Voodoo Man” (1944), and “Zombies on Broadway” (1945). He was often paired with Boris Karloff, an actor most famous as the Frankenstein monster, and despite their rivalry, they remained good friends. In the 1940s, he was reduced to making B-fi lms, and after suffering a back injury, he became addicted to morphine. On the set, he would disguise his addiction by sipping burgundy wine. He ended up making movies for Ed Wood, considered by many as the worst director in Hollywood history, and he died while shooting the now-cult classic fi lm “Plan 9 from Outer Space” (1959 – released after his death). He died of a drug related heart attack in his Los Angeles home, a copy of the script for “Final Curtain,” written by director Ed Wood, in his lap. He was buried wearing one of his many Dracula capes, per the request of his fi fth wife, Hope Lininger, and his son, Bela Jr.

He also published his fi rst collection of poetry during this time. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major. • Poe experienced periods of extreme destitution, often having to burn his furniture to keep warm during the winter.
