Marine motorcyclists take to the desert

MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CENTER TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. — Motorcycle riders from 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment hit the open road during the first battalion ride to Keys View at Joshua Tree National Park Sept. 10.

Initially a ride on historic Route 66 was planned, but later modified because it was thought to be too far away for the first ride, Sandoval said. “So we decided to do something local and from there maybe do a trip to Las Vegas. Before the riders headed out, they reviewed proper motorcycle management and road safety procedures. The ride leaders focused on the Twentynine Palms Highway and the dangers inherent to the area. “When you make it to Joshua Tree National Park I want you to spread out and go in a single file line,” said Chief

Services stung by surprise pop in retirement costs Wartime demands for personnel, and record retention rates due in part to a dismal job market, have left the services with an older, more experienced force – and a surprise $1-billion-a-year pop in retirement costs. The Department of Defense’s Board of Actuaries in late July overhauled the assumptions used to calculate what the services must budget for annually to cover future retirement obligations to the current force. It acted on analyses from the DoD Office of the Actuary which, for the first time, weighed the effects on retirement costs of Post-9/11 developments including nine years of sustained operations, a deep economic recession and growth in military entitlements of retirees and survivors. The result is an $800 million jump in accrual retirement costs the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps have to pay starting 2012 because more service members are staying until retirement. Some of that cost too is a projected 40 percent increase in disability retirements, the result of a crackdown on the low-balling of disability awards by service through stricter compliance with rating practices of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Another $200 million in added yearly retirement costs is attributed to retirees living longer. Death rates are falling – and sharply.

“The improvement that military retirees are seeing in their own mortality is just phenomenal,” said Peter Rossi, one of DoD actuaries that worked on revising projected retirement costs. Retiree deaths are “decreasing at such a rapid rate — faster than the American public, faster than anyone else -- we are seeing a 2-plus percent a year change for active, reserve. It’s everybody.” Deaths for non-disabled retirees in 2008-2009 were eight percent lower than found for non-disabled retirees in 2004-2005. For retired reservists, data showed a four percent drop. No cause has been identified, Rossi added. “Maybe military folks are just in better shape.” The changes in actuarial assumptions reportedly surprised Under Secretary of Defense Robert Hale, the DoD comptroller, who already was under considerable pressure to curb the services’ soaring personnel costs. “The comptroller was not pleased,” said one official. “He now had to go out and find [$1 billion] when Defense Secretary [Robert] Gates is telling him he needs to save money. That was a contentious issue for a while.” The retention rate of careerist is so high that in the 2012 budget to be delivered to Congress next February, the services will assume that 19 percent of all new entrants serve for 20 years, long enough to qualify for retirement. That’s a “huge” change from the 17 percent previously assumed, said Rossi. Specifically, the probability of

newly commissioned officers reaching retirement will climb to 49 percent from 47. For new enlistees, the assumed retirement rate will be raised to 17 percent from 15. It forces the services overall to set aside $20 billion in their 2012 budgets to cover active duty retirement costs, an unplanned for five percent jump. Another $2.8 billion will have to be set aside for Guard and Reserve retirement but that’s unchanged. Rossi said the Office of the Actuary has not reconsidered assumptions for Guard and Reserve retirement but it soon will. Another way to look at the effect of the new assumptions on retirement costs is by individual member costs. For fiscal 2011 the services will set aside $32.70 for future retired pay for

year earlier. For many years, the military ignored future retirement obligations, budgeting only to cover payments due each year to current retirees and survivors. That pay-as-you-go method created a huge unfunded liability. Critics also said the services had no incentive to control retirement costs. In 1984 Congress ordered DoD to switch to “accrual accounting” for retirement accounts. The Treasury Department was given responsibility for the unfunded liability and established a military retirement trust fund. The services began to pay into that fund whatever amount was needed to cover retirement costs for the current active, Guard and Reserve forces. So retirement obligations today

ONCE AGAIN NO COLA -- The board of actuaries assumed at its July meeting that military retirees, social security recipients, federal civilian retirees, disabled veterans and survivors will have to wait until at least January 2012 before they see their next cost-of-living adjustment or COLA. That prediction looks even more solid now, to the regret of retirees. No COLA was paid last year because there was no inflation. The cost of goods and services, in fact, fell by 2.1 percent from the third quarter of 2008 through the third quarter of 2009, the periods used to track CPI. To trigger a COLA for next January, inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) for July through September this year would have to climb by more than 2.1 percent above the third-quarter base period of 2008. For that to happen, prices would have to surge two percent in September alone. There are no signs that is happening. No COLA last year eased the unfunded liability of the military retirement system by $22.3 billion. But it gave no relief to service budgets because Treasury’s pays COLAs of current retirees. THE FLYING TIGERS

F

lying Tigers was the popular name of the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942. The pilots were United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC) personnel, recruited under Presidential sanction and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault; the ground crew and headquarters staff were likewise mostly recruited from the U.S. military, along with some civilians. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons with about 20 aircraft each. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the mission of defending China against Japanese forces. Arguably, the group was a private military contractor, and for that reason the volunteers have sometimes been called mercenaries. The members of the group had lucrative contracts with salaries ranging from $250 a month for a mechanic to $750 for a squadron commander, roughly three times what they had been making in the U.S. forces. The Tigers’ shark-faced fighters remain

among the most recognizable of any individual combat aircraft of World War II, and they demonstrated innovative tactical victories when the news in the U.S. was filled with little more than stories of defeat at the hands of the Japanese forces. The group first saw combat on 20 December 1941, 12 days after Pearl Harbor (local time). It achieved notable success during the lowest period of the war for U.S. and Allied Forces, giving hope to Americans that they would eventually succeed against the Japanese. Surface Ships’ War Game Harkens Back to Days of Large Scale Naval Battles By Lt. Greg D. Raelson, Abraham Lincoln Strike Group Public Affairs

USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, At Sea – Four U.S. warships from the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group took part in a war game off the coast of Hawaii Sept. 18 using modern, high-tech tactics in an exercise reminiscent of the naval battles of yore. Guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71) teamed up with guidedmissile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97) against destroyers USS Shoup (DDG 86) and USS Momsen (DDG 92) to engage in a battle of wits and maneuvering to see who would reign supreme in an epic battle of the seas. The pairs began the exercise on either side of the Hawaiian Islands. Each team limited the use of their radars and communications systems for stealth and began their search for the “enemy”. Shoup’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Joe Nadeau a native of San Diego said, “We developed an in-depth plan based on enemy capabilities and limitations. Using that, we positioned ourselves optimally to maintain our stealth and execute the tactics we would expect to see used against us in an open-ocean fight.” MH-60 Seahawk helicopters were launched from Shoup and Momsen to positively identify Halsey using their onboard radar and Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) imagery. Once positive ID was made, Momsen “sunk” Halsey with a salvo of two “missiles” and continued their search for Cape St. George. “The Air Department demonstrated their flexibility and importance in developing

Post was fascinated by high-altitude flight and reached an unofficial altitude of 55,000 feet in 1934. His flights pioneered the use of high-altitude flight suits, superchargers and pressurized ignition systems for stratospheric flight. Early in 1935, Post and fellow Oklahoman, Will Rogers, planned a leisurely around-the-world flight. Post elected to fly a modified Lockheed Orion, rather than his beloved Winnie Mae. Both were killed departing Point Barrow, Alaska when the engine quit shortly after take-off. Colonel Roscoe Turner was the most colorful aviator of the period. Wearing a uniform of his own design consisting of a powder-blue tweed coat, Sam Browne belt, beige riding breeches and

shiny boots all topped off with a white silk scarf and military cap. Flying as a movie stunt pilot in the late twenties, Turner proposed that the Gilmore Oil Company promote its products using a special Lockheed racing plane. Since the company’s trademark was a lion’s head, Turner acquired a five month old lion cub, named it Gilmore and flew with it as a mascot. Together they set several transcontinental speed records. They flew together for years until the lion, at 500 pounds, was just too much payload. Turner set Gilmore up in a special exhibit at the Burbank airport and later in a private zoo paying for his upkeep for over 25 years. In 1929 “Jimmy” Doolittle made the first completely blind take-off and

In 1942, he organized and led the raid on Tokyo made famous by the book and movie, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. The raid consisted of sixteen B-25 medium bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. Ten years earlier he won the Thompson Air Trophy flying the highly-advanced Gee Bee Racer, one of the few pilots in the thirties to have raced these planes and survived. Having pioneered instrument flight in the twenties, raced the most dangerous planes in the thirties, and commanded the most challenging war missions in the forties, he died peacefully in 1995. Howard Hughes inherited a fortune based on the rotary drill bit. He died a lonely hermit in 1976, a prisoner of mental illness, drugs and his Mormon aides. But in the thirties he and his aircraft broke every major speed and distance record. The custom-built Hughes H-1 Racer set the landplane speed record in 1935 at 352 miles per hour easily outperforming even the fastest military planes of the time. In July, 1938 he and a crew of four flying a Lockheed Lodestar broke the aroundthe-globe record set by Wiley Post in 1933. Two years later, Hughes was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the flight.

The Hidenburg disaster brought to an end the age of the dirigible. 1938 Boeing Unveils Its Stratoliner On December 31st, Boeing Aircraft flight tested its newest aircraft- the Stratoliner. The aircraft, the first to have a pressurized cabin could fly highter than any other passenger aircraft. It had a cruising altitudte of between 14,000 and 20,000 feet. TWA placed an initial order for the planes and was the only airline to fly them before the war.

During the war Hughes and Henry Kaiser contracted to build a huge flying seaplane to transport troops and equipment from America to Europe by air above the reach of German submarines. Kaiser soon backed out of the contract, but Hughes persevered even as the war ended. Years behind schedule, Hughes spent millions of his own money to finish the plane. Finally, in November, 1947, when challenged by a Congressional Committee that the plane would never fly, Hughes flew it himself. The plane never climbed out of ground effect. Realizing that it was grossly under-powered, Hughes permanently hangared the plane, never to be seen again until after his death almost thirty years later. Two weeks earlier, Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier flying the Bell X-1. Aviation, now too complex and expensive for individuals alone, had passed into the hands of government and industry.

A flying ace or fighter ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down several enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The actual number of air victories required to officially qualify as an “ace” has varied, but is usually considered to be five or more. The Flying Aces of World War I

Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), widely known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of that war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories, more than any other pilot.

Use of the term ace in military aviation circles began in World War I (1914–18), when French newspapers described Adolphe Pegoud, as l’as (French for “the ace”) after he became the first pilot to down five German aircraft. The term had been popularized in prewar French newspapers when referring to sports stars such as football players and bicyclists. This is the reason why “ace” is also used to refer to non-aviators who have distinguished themselves by sinking ships and destroying tanks. The German Empire instituted the practice of awarding the Pour le Mérite (“Der blaue Max”/”The Blue Max”), its highest award for gallantry, initially to aviators who had destroyed eight Allied aircraft. The Germans did not use the term ‘ace’, but referred to German pilots who had achieved 10 kills as Überkanonen (big guns) and publicised their names and scores for the benefit of civilian morale. Qualification for the Pour le Mérite was progressively raised as the war went on.

The American literary scholar Francis Peabody Magoun claimed to be Canadian in order to join the RAF uniform, in whose service he achieved ace status. In 1914–16, the British Empire did not have a centralised system of recording aerial victories; in fact, this was done at only squadron level throughout the war. Nor did they publish official statistics on the successes of individuals, although some pilots did become famous through press coverage. In 1914–18, different air services also had different methods of assigning credit for kills. The German Luftstreitkräfte credited “confirmed” victories only for enemy planes assessed as destroyed or captured after either examining the enemy aircraft (or what was left of it) on the ground, or the capture or confirmed death of enemy aircrew. Any one of these tests seems to have been accepted - for instance the shooting down of Albert Ball was credited to Lothar von Richthofen after his death was confirmed by the British, although the wreckage of Ball’s S.E.5 was in fact never identified, and Richthofen’s claim was actually for a Sopwith Triplane. Most aerial fighting was on the German side of the lines, so this quite rigorous system worked reasonably well for the Germans themselves, but would have been totally impractical for the Allies, especially the British, who fought mostly in enemy airspace. Another feature of the German system was that where several pilots attacked and destroyed a single enemy, only one pilot (often the formation leader) was credited with the kill. Most other nations adopted the French Armee de l’Air system of granting full credit to every pilot or aerial gunner participating in a victory, which could sometimes be six or seven individuals. The British were inconsistent in this regard - sometimes a “kill” would be credited to the pilot who got in the closest shot, approximating the German system - more often shared claims were credited to everyone responsible, but apparently sometimes as “shares”

With 12 solo victories (but some authors say 11 or even 13) and either two, or four, shared gained in 66 combat missions, she is one of the world’s only two female fighter aces, along with Katya Budanova.

Colonel Charles Henry “Mac” MacDonald, USAF, (November 23, 1914 – March 3, 2002) was an American fighter ace. MacDonald commanded the 475th Figher Group for 20 months in his P-38 Lightning, “Putt Putt Maru” with the unit number “100” and becoming the third ranking fighter ace in the Pacific during World War II

rather than “whole” victories. In one instance, a Royal Flying Corps pilot described his own score in a letter to his wife as “Eleven, five by me solo - the rest shared”. He went on to say, “so I am miles from being an ace”. It appears that his unit, at least, counted “shared” and “solo” victories separately. That pilot, who later became an air vice marshal, is not mentioned in the list of British aces, so some of his “solo” kills may not have been officially confirmed. In the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service or Royal Air Force, pilots were required to write ‘Combat Reports’ for each engagement with the enemy, and after review by their squadron commander, these were sent to Wing Headquarters. In the jargon of these reports, a victory claim was called a “decisive combat”. The Wing Commander allowed or disallowed each claim, but then passed them on to Brigade (Group) HQ, which also reviewed the reports. By 1918, it was clear Wing HQ did take considerable care to reduce duplication and inaccuracies within these reports. The main weakness however was the lack of a central verification and review process. British or Commonwealth pilots on offensive patrol many miles over the German lines were often not in a position to confirm that an apparently destroyed enemy aircraft had in fact crashed, so that victories were frequently classified as “driven down”, “forced to land”, or “out of control” - what would be called “probables” in later terminology. They were however usually included in a pilot’s official totals in (for instance) citations for decorations.The United States Army Air Service followed a similar practice. For example, Eddie Rickenbacker’s 26 official victories included ten planes “out of control” and several “dived east”. Even allowing for possible modest understatement, these would (at best) have been credited as “probables” in later wars. While “ace” status was generally won only by fighter pilots, several bomber and reconnaissance crews on both sides also destroyed some enemy aircraft, typically in defending themselves from attack. An example is an action on 23 August 1918, in which the Bermudian pilot, Lieutenant Arthur Spurling claimed the destruction of three D.VIIs with his DH-9’s fixed, forward-firing machine gun, while his gunner Sergeant Frank Bell claimed two more with his rear gun. Car runs on compressed air, but will it sell? Lofty idea initially aimed at French market

PARIS — Record-high oil prices might seem like bad news for the auto industry. But one European manufacturer plans to make a type of car unaffected by $50-a-barrel crude — cars that run on compressed air. L u x e m b o u rg - b a s e d Moteur Developpment International is gearing up for the launch of its Air Car line next year. “It’s safe, doesn’t pollute, doesn’t explode, it’s not poisonous and it’s not expensive,” said MDI representative Sebastien Braud. The company says the cars will initially go on sale in France, where the first assembly line is due to start production in the middle of next year. The MiniCATS three-seater compact, a commercial version of a prototype showcased at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, will be priced at $9,850. The CitiCATS six-seater sedan will retail for $16,000. How it works In both cars, an electric pump compresses air into the tank at a pressure of 300 bars. The pump plugs straight into an ordinary household socket and takes four hours to complete the recharge. “When you get home you normally plug in your cell phone,” said Braud. “Well, now you do that with your car too.” The already attractive economics of the Air Car — MDI claims a recharge costs just $2.50 at French electricity prices — can only get more persuasive if oil prices stay high. “It certainly can’t hurt,” said Braud. “It will help encourage people to switch over.” The Air Car’s pistons, pumped by the escaping compressed air, can take the vehicle up to 70 miles per hour. It can travel 50 miles at top speed on a full tank, or further at lower speeds. Slightly pricier hybrid versions achieve higher speeds and longer ranges by running on a combination of compressed air and conventional gasoline, or bio-fuels derived from organic matter. MDI says the air-only models meet the needs of most urban drivers, who average just 11 miles a day. And the only exhaust that comes out of the tail pipe is cold air. Limited appeal, benefits? But auto analysts play down the Air Car’s chances of taking off, unless a major car maker buys the technology and markets it through its own network. “If you buy a Peugeot or a Renault, you know that there’s a dealer close by if you have a problem,” said Gaetan Toulemonde of Deutsche Bank Securities. “If your car has only one dealer in France, what are you going to do when it needs repairs?” Toulemonde said about 10,000 electric cars had been sold in France since major manufacturers introduced them a decade ago. Many now outperform the Air Car in terms of speed and range but nonetheless remain niche products.

2010 HarleyDavidson FLHR Road King Great First Motorcycle For A Big Rider At 49 years of age, 6 feet tall and just over 300 pounds, I knew my first bike was not going to be a 250cc rice burner or current crop of Euro naked bikes. Nor was it going to be one of the smaller Harleys on the market either. So I went with the base model Road King and have not second guessed that decision yet. The bike is solid, sturdy, stable when it needs to be and responsive when you need it to be. Drawbacks? I have laid her on her side twice and at 850# she is a real bear to get back upright. Despite the advertising there is still a lot of vibration but that smoothes out the faster you go and even with after-market Rinehart pipes she still sounds like a riding lawnmower. I have no other motorcycle riding experience to base this on but for my dollar I do not think I could have bought a better first motorcycle. I commute with it regularly and have taken it up into the Colorado Rocky Mountains with ease. She is a real joy to ride. Worse thing: the vibration. When asked about the newly formed political system, Ben Franklin replied: We have created a Republic Ma’am, if you can keep it. As of September 14, 2010 the United States Population is 310,241,000. How many of those people know anything about how their government works, how and why this form of government was created, the history of our country or even the definition of Democracy? My guess is less than one third actually

take the time to learn about it, and the majority of those are in some form of government work. Are we a Democracy, or are we a Republic? The Declaration of Independance is a brilliant piece of historical foresight that provides for a true Republic, and change if it is appropriate. Probably not, because we don’t pay attention, and that must change. A modern example of oligarchy could be seen in South Africa during the twentieth century. Here, the basic characteristics of oligarchy are particularly easy to observe, since the South African form of oligarchy was based on race. Democracy is a political form of government where governing power is derived from the people, either by direct referendum (direct democracy) or by means of elected representatives of the people (representative democracy). An essential process in representative democracies is competitive elections that are fair both substantively and procedurally. Furthermore, freedom of political expression, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press are essential so that citizens are informed and able to vote in their personal interests. A republic is a form of government in which the people or some portion thereof retain supreme control over the government, and in which the head of government is not a monarch. The word “republic” is derived from the Latin phrase res publica, which can be translated as “a public affair”. Both modern and ancient republics vary widely in their ideology and composition. The most common definition of a republic is a state without a monarch. After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. The scored never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feeling and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. Who’s Denis Grachev? and why are opponents intimidated by him?

D

enis Grachev is a Russian boxer/Muay Thai kickboxer who stands six-foot-one inches tall and weighs a sturdy 175 pounds. At 28 years old he’s as fit as any recruit finishing Marine Corps boot camp. In addition to his rock hard rectus abdominis, he has this Nordic look with the high cheek bones and shaved head to enhance his impregnable appearance. Grachev, via Chaykovsky, Perm Krai, Russia, arrived in San Diego a little over four years ago. Ever since that time he’s worked diligently as an instructor and professional fighter to save enough money to get his wife, Maria, out of Russia. After just one year, he did just that. She now lives with him in his Downtown apartment, attends a nearby school and plans to give birth to their first child in late March. Perhaps because of his sensitive nature, Grachev rarely laughs and only gives a polite upturned smile when someone jokes with him. After going through what many would call difficult times, Grachev seems even more focused than ever. His manager, Mark Dion, will tell you he’s a rare breed who never needs overseeing. “Denis is too disciplined an athlete. He trains all the time. He knows what it takes to win. After every win, there’s never any showboating. He’s as humble a guy as you’ll ever meet. What can I say, he’s a great guy. He doesn’t do drugs. He doesn’t drink and he doesn’t chase women. “My problem is, I can’t get anyone to fight him. This year alone, I applied for, but was turned down for 54 fights. I make 50 to 100 calls a month trying to get him work. Nobody wants to fight him.” After competing in combat sports since he was fifteen years old, Grachev has accomplished much. He’s the current IKF Muay Thai Light Cruiserweight World Champ with a record of 15-2-0, 9 KO’s; he’s also a two time World Kickboxing Champion (2000, 2005) and four time Russian National Champion. His MMA record stands at 4-1-0, 1 KO, with 2 submissions. He’s also an undefeated professional boxer with 8 wins, no losses, with 4 KO’s. When he’s not training or coaching someone, Grachev will head up to the mountains for some R&R. He enjoys skiing and snowboarding or an occasional visit to the beach. After finishing his fighting career, he would like to run his own gym.

HIGHEST-PAID ATHLETE HAILED FROM ANCIENT ROME Ultra millionaire sponsorship deals such as those signed by sprinter Usain Bolt, motorcycle racer Valentino Rossi and tennis player Maria Sharapova, are just peanuts compared to the personal fortune amassed by a second century A.D. Roman racer, according to an estimate published in the historical magazine Lapham’s Quarterly. According to Peter Struck, associate professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, an illiterate charioteer named Gaius Appuleius Diocles earned “the staggering sum” of 35,863,120 sesterces (ancient Roman coins) in prize money. Recorded in a monumental inscription erected in 146 A.D., the figure eclipses the fortunes of all modern sport stars, including golfer Tiger Woods, hailed by Forbes magazine last fall “sports’ first billion-dollar man.” Diocles, “the most eminent of all charioteers,” according to the inscription, was born in Lusitania, in what is now Portugal and south-west Spain, and started his spectacular career in 122 A.D., when he was 18. Life for a charioteer in Rome wasn’t easy. Often slaves who could eventually buy their freedom, these racers engaged in wild laps of competition at the Circus Maximum, running a total of about 4,000 meters (nearly 2.5 miles). “After seven savage laps, those who managed not to be upended or killed and finish in the top three took home prizes,” wrote Struck. Experienced charioteers drove hard-to-manage chariots driven by four or even more horses. Their sporting equipment included a leather helmet, shin guards, chest protector, a jersey, a whip, and a sharp knife with which to cut the reins if the chariot overturned. Diocles won his first race two years after his debut with the Whites, four years later, he briefly moved with the great rivals the Greens. But had the most success with the Reds, with whom he remained until the end of his career at the age of “42 years, 7 months, and 23 days.” He is said to have won 1,462 of his 4,257 races and finished second 861 times, making nine horse “centenari” (100-time winners) and one horse, Pompeianus, a 200-time winner. The inscription details his winning tactics: he “took the lead and won 815 times,” took the competitors by surprise by “coming from behind and winning 67 times,” and “won in stretch 36 times.” Although other racers surpassed him in the total number of victories -- a driver called Pompeius Musclosus collected 3,599 winnings -- Diocles became the richest of all, as he run and won at big money events. For example, he is recorded to have made 1,450,000 sesterces in just 29 victories. Struck calculated that Diocles’ s total earnings of 35,863,120 sesterces were enough to provide grain for the entire population of Rome for one year, or to fund the Roman Army at its height for more than two months. “By today’s standards that last figure, assuming the apt comparison is what it takes to pay the wages of the American armed forces for the same period, would cash out to about $15 billion,” wrote Struck. “Even without his dalliances, it is doubtful Tiger could have matched it,” he added.

Vasquez Can’t Get No Satisfaction Following their 38-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, second-year guard Louis Vasquez sat down with MP reporter Art Garcia Jr and answered a few questions. As he prepared for their trip to Seattle and a few days before Marcus McNeill signed his tender, Vasquez – a third-round pick out of Texas Tech – talked about his experience as a rookie and the fact that despite being selected to the All-Rookie Team by Pro Football Weekly and the Professional Football Writers Association, he is not one to rest on his early accolades.

INTERVIEW WITH VASQUEZ AG: Coming out of the spread offense at Texas Tech, what was the biggest adjustment for you and what was your goal coming into the NFL? LV: Definitely the speed of the game and the amount of information they throw at you and expect you to pick it up. I just wanted to pick up and learn as much as I could, information wise, and adjust from the spread offense we ran in college to the pro-style offense that we run here. I feel I did a phenomenal job that first (training) camp of making the adjustment and

I ended up starting. Coming into my second year I feel a lot more comfortable. AG: How different was training camp this year as opposed to coming in as a rookie? LV: I knew what to expect this year because that first camp as a rookie your head is kind of spinning around. This year my comfort level is much higher because I knew what to expect (before camp). Other than getting used to the speed at this level, football is football. You just need to learn how to slow the game

down (to make it less complicated) at this level – that is another big adjustment. AG: You had a lot of injuries along the offensive line last year yet you guys still were able to piece it together. How did you hold things together? LV: Unfortunately both Nick (Hardwick) and I both went down with injuries the first game last year – then I was able to come back (after missing two games) and we were able to find a way to win with the guys we had. All of us on the offensive line stay pretty close and


SPORTS NEWS I I MP MP we gel throughout all of training camp and the preseason where we were able to go on that 11-game win streak -- so that sort of speaks for itself. AG: Jacob Hester said that during his rookie year he was so worried about missing a block for LT that it slowed his progress as a player. Did that happen to you at all either in your run blocking or pass blocking trying to protect Philip Rivers? LV: The biggest thing is you can’t go out there and be afraid to mess up because nobody plays a perfect game – even Hall-of-Famers mess up. The key is, once you make that mistake you need to say, ‘Oh well, short memory’ – go back to the huddle and get ready for the next play. AG: You were voted to the AllRookie Team despite missing two games, how satisfying was that? LV: I was surprised. I was happy that I had made it but I’m not satisfied yet – I don’t think I’ll be ever satisfied, that’s just my nature. This year I’m going to try as hard as I can to make the Pro Bowl. AG: With Marcus holding out many people feel like the offensive line could be a weak link on the field. Have you heard that talk and what’s your response? LV: We might have heard a chirp here or there, but Dombrowski has done a great job over there (left tackle) filling the shoes of Marcus McNeill. We’re ready to play the whole season without Marcus and Dombrowski will be just fine. AG: Having busted your butt to become a starter as a rookie you get hurt the first game of the year on Monday Night Football versus the Raiders. How hard was it for you to have to sit and watch those two games you had to miss? LV: You never want to sit down

and watch your buddies go out there because you already built so much together and you don’t want to let them down. You feel like a sense that you’re letting them down because you’re not out there shedding blood, sweat and tears with them. It’s hard to sit on the sideline but that’s part of the game. AG: Many people feel that the window of opportunity for a Super Bowl appearance is closing fast. What is it going to take to get this team to the next level? LV: Staying together as a team through rough times – the good, the bad – and continue to work on all the details (of the game plan) and stay focused all season long. AG: A person in the front office told me to keep an eye on the offensive line because they are pissed-off at not only the comments made by LT, but also having finished the season ranked 31st in rushing offense. Is there any truth in that? LV: Yeah we’ve heard the talk that ‘they throw the ball too much and can’t run block.’ So we want to go out and kind of prove that we can move the ball on the ground. The Endzone: In their two losses, the Chargers have surrendered a total of 571 return yards and three touchdowns on special teams; been penalized 16 times for 113 yards; and have lost the turnover battle by giving up 6 takeaways (4 fumbles/2 interceptions) and gaining just two (1 fumble/1 interception). Getting defensive – the defense has given up just two touchdowns and three field goals in the 10 drives opponents have started in Chargers’ territory. Initial diagnosis on Vasquez’ knee is a strained medial collateral ligament.

life after war. Indeed this is a long-standing historical issue that deserves attention. Marsha has treated Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans. They are often deployed over and over. This takes a heavy toll on the spirit. Her work helps after just a few treatments. Her clients are better able to cope with the stresses of life after war and gives them ending or closure. The physical part of the holistic approach is essentially aimed at helping the nervous and endocrine systems to return to balance. The endocrine system is the system that controls and monitors stress reactions through a series of hormonal signals throughout the body. When someone is exposed to constant uninterrupted stress this system can get overloaded and stuck in the “on” position. This leads to what we call PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder. This can mean the body is easily triggered

into a fight or flight response by in coming signals that are experienced in everyday life. One veteran described it this way, “We remember the sounds and smells and we are still locked, loaded and ready to go at all times.” So war leaves a legacy of wounds on its victims but it is not necessary that these issues be left to go on forever. Although the memories will always remain, the trauma to the mind body and spirit is treatable and can be reduced to a manageable level. (A veteran says),”the greatest loss is of our souls and the deep hole in our psyche, do we take a pill of just tough it out?” So many are military men and their family

members are looking for answers to these questions. Where is the help we need? Many concerned Americans are currently delving into this issue and I believe we are making headway toward a solution. (A veteran says) “First we need to come back home to smiles and hugs and a feeling of thank God (relief) we made it home. increasing numbers of our military personnel are deployed in conflicts around the world, Feed The Children’s mission of caring for hungry children and families in our own country is more crucial today than ever before. In February 2009, Feed The Children established the Americans Feeding Americans Emergency Caravan to help children and families affected by the economic downturn. As of August 2010, the caravan had provided assistance to more than 135,000 families in some of the hardest-hit communities across the nation. With so many full-time military, reserve and National Guard forces deployed overseas, many service families are hard-pressed to make ends meet during this difficult time. As a way to show appreciation for their sacrifices, Feed The Children has dispatched more than 946,000 pounds of food and essentials to military bases in 13 states across the country since 2002. Additionally, we have shipped nearly 168,000 pounds of supplies – including personal hygiene items, books and CDs – directly to our soldiers serving in Iraq. This is our way of saying “thank you” to these courageous men and women for their service to our country. Special initiatives such as the Americans Feeding Americans Emergency Caravan and our military relief efforts are only possible because of the kindness of our donors, including those who contribute through the CFC. for the military mom Having children and being a mom is a blessing. Being a mother can be a tough job and it can be tough on your body. Unfortunately with childbearing and breast-feeding comes unwanted changes on your body like stretch marks, loose skin, saggy breasts, and weight gain. Modern innovations in breast lift techniques include limited incision techniques and nipple sensation sparing techniques. ‘Spinal Tap’ crew teams up again “I THINK being funny is not anyone’s first choice,” said Woody Allen. WHEN YOU hear the names Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean, what comes to mind? “Spinal Tap,” of course -- the great “mockumentary” by which all other parodies are compared. This team also did “A Mighty Wind,” “Waiting for Guffman” and the fabulous “Best in Show.”

Jane Lynch (although with her “Glee” fame and schedule, she might be harder to catch now) and Parker Posey. The guys are still being asked to do a sequel to “Spinal Tap” but Christopher Guest insists nothing could come close to the original -- why even try?

Now we hear that Guest, Shearer and McKean are putting their heads together to make a movie about the world of retro collectors; people who ferret out such things as old comic books, Barbie dolls, vintage magazine ads, vinyl 45 rpm singles, or even -- ick! -- Charles Manson song lyrics written on Kleenex. There’s a massive underground of collectors who would do the Borgia’s proud as they scheme and double-cross to possess the item they crave. (Those who collect movie star memorabilia can be especially treacherous.) The usual suspects are being considered -- Michael Patrick Higgins,

HMMM ... “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” That leads me right to Lady Gaga and her impassioned stand and remarks on the matter of gays serving in the military. (The GOP is now holding up legislation that would repeal this ridiculous edict.) I read somewhere that Gaga had “made a fool of herself.” Not at all, I

thought her remarks were right on. She said those who should be targeted are any soldiers who feel uncomfortable with gay men and women in their midst.” The Lady suggested a new motto -- “If you don’t like it go home!” I WAS remiss the other day in reporting on Jackie Bisset receiving France’s prestigious Legion d’ honneur. Another actress was also being honored that day -- the great Olivia de Havilland, two-time Oscar winner and along with Ann Rutherford, the last remaining major cast members of “Gone with the Wind.” (Even little Bonnie Blue Butler passed away recently.) I hear that Olivia was in fine fettle, as vibrant and witty as ever. She also said, “Of course I’d act again, if the right role came along!” Olivia is 94.

The deluge of new primetime series is beginning, with the major networks set to introduce 15 programs next week alone. And no, I haven’t turned into a blithering idiot yet, though we’re getting dangerously close. For those waiting to see how the critics react (and let’s hope nobody’s losing sleep), it seemed like an opportune time to explain a bit about this process, and the ways in which Variety differs from other outlets. Admittedly, pausing to discuss criticism risks looking self-aggrandizing, but I’ll endure those charges -- mostly because it’s always surprising how little understanding exists regarding how critics operate. Indeed, even veteran producers and execs -- people who theoretically ought to know better -- can still harbor gross misconceptions. Examples include the producer who blogged about settling his beef over a negative review with a baseball bat (for which he later apologized), t h e showrunner who insisted my pan of his show was “vindictive for no particular reason” and the former network executives who only seemed to agree upon their mutual conviction that every discouraging word represented a personal vendetta. Finally, there’s the “Entourage” gang,

which amusingly indulged in an episode where a character strolled into Variety’s office to tell its squirrelly-looking TV critic to piss off. The overriding theme is the assumption that one person’s opinion must be tethered to some nefarious or ulterior motive -- or, conversely represents a life-long pledge of loyalty and admiration. Neither is true. Like the fine print in banking ads, past performance is no guarantee of future success. Through the years nobody has provided me more hours of TV viewing pleasure than David Milch and Steven Bochco, and I confess to liking both personally. Yet that didn’t stop me from blasting the former’s “John From Cincinnati” and bemoaning the latter’s “Raising the Bar.” However self-indulgent it may seem, then, let’s set the record straight on a few things before the fall onslaught is unleashed. For starters, I tend to err on the side of caution when praising pilots. This is in part because I’ve been burned too often by shows that started well -frontloading all the good stuff -and then fizzled. So you might see a lot of hedging words like “promising,” “potential” or “initially,” because A) I have a limited vocabulary; and B) despite growing pressure to issue

ENTERTAINMENT with Brian Lowry I MP thunderous verdicts (tallying web traffic can heighten the impulse to swing for the rhetorical fences), a pilot is only a promise of what’s to come. Last fall, my positive “Modern Family” review would have been much more unqualified by midseason, for example, while “FlashForward” had already squandered virtually all its goodwill before Halloween. In such matters, declaring victory prematurely is frequently a bad idea. A disclaimer would be when I’ve seen multiple episodes, like HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” (the first six) or FX’s “Terriers” (five). After screening that many there’s at least a sense the producers know where they’re heading -- and even then, there are exceptions: “Heroes” rapidly descended from anticipation into tedium, “Dexter” won me over, and I still haven’t been able to entirely make up my mind about AMC’s “Rubicon” after eight episodes. On the flip side, if a pilot is truly awful, that’s a very bad sign. Yes, shows can improve, but when the prototype that

sold your show stinks -- the one you had months to craft and nurture -- it’s difficult to recover from that creatively. Because Variety is a trade paper, I also try to step outside myself long enough to venture some analysis (more like an educated guess) as to how well these programs will perform, regardless of how I might feel about them. Those assessments are based on time period, network and history, along with intangible factors. Finally, I realize programs represent people’s livelihoods and never take those efforts lightly. A lot of blood, toil and sweat go into producing these shows, and while I might occasionally be flippant in writing about them (a good review should entertain as well as inform), it’s possible to be tough without being mean-spirited, provided the views expressed are fair and honest. So if by chance I call your baby ugly, rest assured, it’s nothing personal. As they used to say on “Ally McBeal,” “Bygones.”

MAD MAX to MAD MEN “I BELIEVE in the forgiveness of sin and the redemption of ignorance,” said Adlai Stevenson. NOW HERE’S an astonishing rumor about one of my favorite TV shows and one of my least favorite public figures. I do mean AMC’s “Mad Men” and Hollywood’s madman, Mel Gibson. I hear that Mel, who has been laying low since the release of all those private phone chats with his ex Oksana Grigorieva, met with “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner about the possibility of guest-starring in an “MM” story arc next season -- that would be season five, which begins filming next July.) Mel is a huge fan of the series and really wants in. Most experts agree that Mel’s movie career is kaput. I don’t quite agree on that myself, but some close to Mel assert that he thinks so himself. Weiner -- who is Jewish and can overlook Mel’s infamous drunk rant of several years ago -- told a pal recently that he sees a lot of dramatic potential pitting Mel against Don Draper. Well, that’s for sure, and for all of Mel’s issues, I’ve always thought he was a very good and appealing actor. Mel on “Mad Men” -- perhaps an inevitable career move. As George Sanders said to Marilyn in “All About Eve”: “Your next step, I think, should be toward television.”

OLIVER STONE’S “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” premiered in Manhattan on Monday night. I have to say this was one of the most massive premieres ever. The red carpet was jammed and the line of people waiting for tickets (from the usually swift Will Call table) snaked around the block. And the screaming from the paparazzi was deafening. There was that “little something extra” in the air. A lot of it had to do with anticipation for the film itself, Oliver’s sequel to one of the most iconic movies ever, a 1987 film that mirrored its money-mad time and spawned half a dozen famous quotes. It was a hit and a cult film, all at the same time.

Only its creator, Mr. Stone could have, and should have, carried the story of Gordon Gekko forward in a brand-new age of greed and financial convulsions. (New century, same old story -- money c h a n g e s everything, and everyone.) Hyping the mood further, was the added tension of seeing the star, Michael Douglas, who is valiantly battling cancer. (Michael looked good, if a bit thinner than usual, accompanied by his gorgeous wife, Catherine ZetaJones. They both smiled radiantly.) The red carpet reporters, the photographers, and the fans gathered around the Ziegfeld Theater were in a state of high anxiety awaiting the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas. When they appeared, you could hear the cheers and screaming from a block away. Aside from Michael, the film’s younger leading man Shia LaBeouf was there -- this hot kid received his own shrieking reception -- as well as such worthies as Barbara Walters, Tyra Banks, Courtney Love, the Carl Icahns, the Spike Lees, Broadway’s Cheyenne Jackson, Brett Ratner, Warren Buffett, singers Moby and Rob Thomas and the Lorne Michaels. THE MOVIE? Well, there are fascinating aspects to it, for sure.

(It’s Oliver Stone, folks!) Although fictionalized, at its best it has an almost documentary feel. As banks face collapse, Wall Street traders betray each other and chaos reigns. Those who pay attention to financial scandals will recognize the thinly disguised scandals of Goldman-Sachs and Lehman Brothers. It is also magnificently photographed -- Manhattan has never looked so cruelly beautiful or powerful. The sweeping shots of buildings glinting in the sun take your breath away and give you shivers. And then there is the plot -- Gordon Gekko, the disgraced Wall Street big shot, out of prison, shaping a new life, attempting to reconcile with his daughter (perpetually sad faced Carrie Mulligan, another one of Oliver’s Stone’s nowhere women), tangling with old enemies (saturnine, sinister Josh Brolin). Gekko also fascinates a surprisingly idealistic new young turk (Shia LaBeouf, who is all kinetic energy and appealing vulnerability). Mr. Douglas as Gordon Gekko, is sensational. THE FILM is also studded with smaller appearances, some mere cameos -- the eternal Sylvia Miles, reprising her original role as a real estate broker, Susan Sarandon as Shia’s mother, giving, frankly, a terrible performance, the great Frank Langella as Shia’s mentor, Mr. Stone himself, which is really quite distracting, and even Charlie Sheen, who starred with Douglas in the original film. Sheen, caked with makeup, looks older than Douglas. Austin Pendelton plays Shia’s scientist friend who has created some new “fusion energy” project, but Pendleton’s scenes, with the actor dressed up in a white lab coat, are giggle-inducing, and I don’t think they’re meant to be. The veteran Eli Wallace is also on hand, shockingly frail but vital to the story. And New York’s own event-giver deluxe, Peggy Siegal has her own lingering, beautifully lit close-up at a party sequence. While the relationship plot

convolutions hold interest, they seem at odds with the other (even more convoluted) industry aspects of the movie. One almost senses the relationship between Shia and Mulligan is there simply to cushion the Byzantine financial finagling, which is mesmerizing to people in that business, but can be hard going for others, to whom the language of the trading floor is akin to Chinese without subtitles. There is an ultimate sentimentality that rankles and is out of character -- the movie is best when everybody is behaving their worst, or at least when you’re wondering if somebody’s getting fleeced (a subway sequence with Douglas and Shia is riveting.) And I wish Oliver, whom I admire as a filmmaker, would use his female characters to better advantage. I won’t give away the plot, but a more riveting denouement might have come had Carey Mulligan exerted her Gekko genes and not spent the entire movie weeping or moping. THE AFTER party happened at the fabulous Cipriani on 42nd Street. The usual groaning buffet tables and open bars kept everybody happy. At least some of the stars showed up to do their duty, but it seemed the place was really packed with Wall Street-type traders and wannabes. Needless to say, to a man they loved “Money Never Sleeps.” In fact, they know the truth -- money never ever dozes.

WALL STREET: N

ow playing in theatres from director Oliver Stone is a second look at greed with 20th Century Fox and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”. This film tells the story Jake Moore (Shia LaBeouf), a young man on Wall Street trading under the watchful eye of his boss Louis Zable (Frank Langella). He is also in love with Winnie (Carey Mulligan) and is planning to marry her. There is one details – Winnie is the daughter of jailed Wall Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) who was finally released from prison. Gordon has become an author and public speaker, which interests Jake. But everything begins to fall apart, as the global economy begins to crumble; it is the Wall Street tycoons that begin to bite each other in the backs. The first victim is Jake’s beloved boss Zable – now Jake wants answers. Without telling Winnie he enlists Gekko to help him find out who was out to destroy his boss. All of this leads to Bretton James (Josh Brolin), a cold and calculating man who has no problem crushing anyone around him that gets in his way. Jake forgets he is swimming with sharks and must find his answers without losing Winnie or his soul. FINAL WORD: This is quite a role for LaBeouf. His wit and sharp turn of a line is actually quite well done here. His character leads with his emotions and that’s his downfall. Mulligan is just lovely on screen. As Winnie you can totally believe the pain this character has gone through as the daughter of Gordon Gekko. Wanting to believe her father yet knowing the pitfalls, Mulligan plays it well. Brolin is just cold in his role as James. Remind you of anyone back in say 1987 when the words “greed is good” were uttered for the first time? James has the killer instinct and Brolin’s cold stare makes it perfect. The winner here is Douglas. Reprising his role as Gordon Gekko having gone through prison and wanting to be a phoenix is awesome. With steely blue eyes he still manages to get people to do what he wants them to – whether they

realize it or not. Douglas says of his role, “As high as we saw Gordon Gekko in 1987 – this is how low he is in the beginning of this film”. Playing Gekko won Douglas his Oscar in 1988 for Best Actor – can another for the same role be on his horizon? Other cast include: Susan Sarandon as Sylvia Moore, Eli Wallach as Jules Steinhardt, Jason Clark as Jack Schweitzer, Vanessa Ferlito as Audrey, with two amazing cameos of Oliver Stone as a trader and another very recognizable face but I am not going to spoil it for anyone. This is the sequel to the 1987 film “Wall Street” which was hugely popular. Director Stone never quite understood why Gordon Gekko became such a fixture to filmgoers but has clearly done the sequel justice. It has only taken twenty-two years but well worth the wait. TUBS OF POPCORN: I give “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. The story is believable and it is filmed very well. Coming in at 133 minutes there is so much to experience the viewer will want more. The entire cast works in such a way that to remove one would bring the story tumbling down. That is a feat in itself. In the end – he once said greed was good, now it seems its legal.

I thought of this when reading the story in the new Vanity Fair of the epic struggle between Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal and Arthur Sulzberger’s New York Times. I have to agree with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter’s opinion that New York City is big enough for both newspapers and we need them both. Yesterday, in my local Bon-Bon Hair Salon on 3rd Avenue, my stylist Lolita was humming and singing along with Lady Gaga and told me how talented and wonderful this showbiz phenomenon really is. Be that as it may, my own admiration for Lady Gaga increased when I learned from watching “The Rachel Maddow Show” that Gaga had several “dates” the night of the MTV Awards. She was accompanied by at least four former members of the Armed Services, men and women who had been dismissed under the disastrous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” debacle. Even before I went down to Barnes & Noble in Tribeca the other eve to introduce the veteran writer Glenn Plaskin and discuss his new book about the dog that took Manhattan, I realized I was just a small oarsman in the big boat of Glenn’s PR. I asked Glenn questions about why his cocker spaniel “Katie” had won more media space already than the search for someone to play Scarlett O’Hara back in 1936. Dogs are mighty popular these days and “Katie” has been read and lauded by Betty White, Joan Rivers, Judge Judy and Mary Tyler Moore. “Katie,” it seems, brought an entire apartment complex together, teaching everyone the meaning of dedication, loyalty and friendship. Her death in old age caused more tears than were shed over Princess Diana. But I do urge you to read the compelling story of “Katie” because if you don’t, Glenn Plaskin will hunt you down (like a dog!) and you’ll pay for missing the experience. KYLIE MINOGUE SEXINESS Standing at just under 5 feet tall, Kylie Minogue is something of an Australian sexual firecracker. Her smoldering physique, including a backside hailed by The Sun in London as “a national treasure,” is magnified by a vivacious and sexually adventurous personality. Calling herself “a natural flirt” and an exhibitionist, Kylie likes to have a lot of passion in her relationships and has been known to fill the void on tour by having intimate phone conversations with her partners back home. Her boyfriends who have been lucky enough to travel with her have come to expect the unexpected. Kylie Minogue’s celebrity ex-boyfriends date back to her Australian costar, Jason Donovan, from their TV series, Neighbours. From there, she became acquainted with the late INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence, and served as the inspiration for the band’s hit single, “Suicide Blonde.” In addition, she’s dated model James Gooding, actor Olivier Martinez, and currently, another model, Andres Velencoso. For the men out there who feel that Kylie Minogue is clearly out of their league, there’s hope. In the ‘90s, she had a six-month relationship with comedian and ex-MTV personality Pauly Shore, who took her to

Who can hate Kylie? She’s an Aussie superstar in Europe, Britain’s most beloved celebrity, and a global gay icon. She survived several decades in the entertainment business, even flourished there, and perhaps most impressively, also beat breast cancer. After she finished chemo in 2006, she headed back to the studio. Her second album since then, and her eleventh studio album, Aphrodite is an ethereal blend of her pop sensibilities and down-tempo club jams. Minogue’s strength has forever been in singles, and Aphrodite doesn’t contain anything as strong as

classic hits like “I Could Be So Lucky” or “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.” That said, it’s a fine album of danceable pop enthusiasm and is peppered with themes of personal liberation and freedom on the dance floor. Opening track and first radio single “All The Lovers” is a bittersweet tribute to a current love. Breathy and infused with raw sexuality, she sings, “All the lovers/That have come before/They don’t compare/To you.” While not yet a single, I’d be surprised if the title track doesn’t get some airplay. One of the more catchy songs about how Minogue is “original, a golden girl,” it relies on her standard charming rhymes like “kiss me/miss me,” and I imagine more than a few anxious DJs will seek this one out for club remixes. “Get Outta My Way” is both about personal empowerment and kicking no-good dudes to the curb. In typical tough gal Kylie fashion, she keeps repeating, “Now I showed you what I’m made of. This album won’t change your life, but it could liven up a party, a long drive, or a jog around the lake. My slightly Eurotrashy self will definitely be keeping this in rotation this year.
