De facto Sharia law in America Is the United States today a de facto sharia state? A close look at recent events points to some alarming conclusions about the tenets of sharia law taking hold in our onceproud constitutional republic and the unwitting, unequal application of existing U.S. laws. The result is that when it comes to religious expression, Muslims now enjoy more freedom of religion and speech under our Bill of Rights than non-Muslims. Equal protection under the laws of our country holds for Muslims far better than for non-Muslims. Several recent examples illustrate this point. continues on page 4 >>> The Military Press October 1, 2011

elcome to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, home of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing, and the largest and best military air show in the nation. The theme for the 2011 MCAS Miramar Air Show, which runs from Sept 30 through Oct. 2, is “A Salute to San Diego: Birthplace of Naval Aviation 1911-2011,” in honor of the centennial of both Naval and Marine Aviation. Aircraft from the 3d MAW flew in the Navy’s “Parade of Flight” here in San Diego in February to celebrate 100 years of Naval Aviation. This year’s air show will allow us to also salute 100 years of Marine Aviation – a year-long celebration which spans May 2011 to May 2012 with several events across the country.

Tuskegee Airmen The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of a group of African American pilots who fought in World War II. Formally, they were the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces. During World War II, African Americans in many U.S. states still were subject to racist Jim Crow laws. The American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen were subject to racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. Despite these adversities, they trained and flew with distinction.

Christianity suppressed In October, students at a Chattanooga, Tenn., high school were told that their longtime tradition of praying at practice and before games would no longer be allowed. The school superintendent had called an end to prayer at all school functions following a complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. In July, students visiting the Supreme Court from an Arizona Christian school were stopped by police as they bowed their heads and quietly prayed for the justices. The students were standing outside the court building to the side at the bottom of the building steps. They weren’t blocking traffic, but an officer abruptly approached them and ordered them to stop praying immediately. Four Christians were arrested in June for disorderly conduct at the Dearborn Arab International Festival after handing out copies of the Gospel of John. The four had stationed themselves five blocks from the festival and did not actively approach anyone, but instead waited for others to approach them. Still, police officers confiscated their video cameras and led the four Christians away in handcuffs to shouts of “Allah hu Akbar” from Muslim bystanders. In June of 2006, an instrumental rendition of “Ave Maria” was banned at the Henry Jackson High School graduation in Everett, Wash. Despite Justice Samuel Alito’s protests, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider whether the case was an example of censorship of student speech. In direct contrast to the above incidents, which limit Christian prayer and expression, numerous examples exist of special accommodations for Muslim activities and religious practices. These indicate an adherence to a separate and distinct policy for Muslims that mirrors the supremacist requirements of sharia law.

Islam accepted In California, 7th grade students at Excelsior Middle School in Discovery Bay adopted Muslim names, prayed on prayer rugs, and celebrated Ramadan under a state-mandated curriculum that requires instruction about various religions. In 2006, the U.S. Supreme Court again declined to hear legal challenges by concerned Excelsior parents, who complained that the instruction was actually religious indoctrination and that Christianity and Judaism were not given equal time and exposure. The curriculum has been upheld as appropriate multicultural material. After Carver Elementary School in San Diego absorbed Muslim students from a defunct charter school in September 2006, a special recess was provided for the students to pray, classes were segregated by gender, and pork was removed from the school menu. A teacher’s aide at the school led children in prayer and was provided with a lesson plan allotting an hour of class time for Islamic prayer. In essence, Muslim students alone were privileged with public school time to practice their religion at an additional cost of $450,000 in public funds and a loss of instruction time. In May, students at a Wellesley, Mass., middle school visited a local radical mosque and participated in a prayer session. Parents, who gave signed permission for students to visit the mosque, were not informed in advance that students would also be bowing to Allah and listening to lectures on Islam. Surprisingly, teachers did nothing to intervene as students participated and a mosque spokesperson denigrated Western civilization while glorifying and misrepresenting Islam, even falsely referring to the greater rights of women under Islam. Astonishingly, this occurred in a state that has prohibited the sale of Christmas items, including red and green tissue paper, at a school store and forced firefighters to remove a “Merry Christmas” sign from their sta-

From Our Readers It is said that, at the close of the Constitutional Convention, a woman approached Benjamin Franklin and asked him what type of government had been decided upon by the delegates. Franklin stated: “We have given you a Republic, if you can keep it.”

“We are a Republic” – a must read AmericaWorking.org wants to thank our men and women of our great armed forces for standing and defending our freedom. We are blessed to have the greatest military armed forces that the world has ever seen. Our soldiers are the best fighting machines to ever walk on God’s green earth. We are proud of you and we love you. What this country has is because of you and you are in our thoughts and prayers everyday. We live in the land of the free only because of the brave. I’m Burt Keefer founder and writer of America Working.org. I’m a small general contractor in San Diego. In the past few years I’m 1 of 30 million Americans who have lost everything we have work for in our life because of corruption in Wall Street, banking and in our politicians. What I wasn’t willing to lose is our freedom and our Country. I knew in my heart that there was no reason why we had to go thru all this pain and suffering. This crises was a easy fix if you took out corruption and politics. So three years ago I decided to do something about it. I started to hold town meeting and give speeches on putting America back to work. It was so hard getting people to come out to hear more bad news when they were fighting everyday just to put food on their table. I finally realized I needed to put my words into a video and get it on the internet. Our video goes over the threats to our nation and the good news of our way out. Our purpose of making this video, is to help educate our people and to prepare them for the election of 2012. This is our last stand for freedom. We must come together as Americans and take back our land and government or the damage that will be done will be irreversible. If you love your country and are thankful for what our founding forefathers gave us, then we should do the same for our children and theirs for centuries to come. In all of history the only form of government that coincides with freedom, that stands and defends freedom, that protects WE THE PEOPLE according to the law of the land is a conservative Republic. It is time to restore our land. One flag, one language, one country. Please go to http://americaworking.org/ and help us to get this message out. We thank you and God Bless – Burt Keefer

tion. Over the last few years, the University of Michigan, a taxpayer-funded school, has provided separate prayer rooms and ritual foot baths, requiring bathroom modifications costing over $100,000, for Muslim observances. At Minneapolis Community and Technical College, where religious displays, including those for Christmas, have been strictly prohibited, footwashing facilities are being installed using taxpayer dollars after one student slipped and injured herself washing her feet in a sink. Director of Legal Affairs and President Phil Davis justified the disparate treatment of Muslims, explaining, “The foot-washing facilities are not about religion; they are about public safety.” Muslims periodically block the streets of New York City, prostrating themselves in the middle of roadways and sidewalks undisturbed by police and other authorities. The resulting traffic jams are ignored, the doubleand illegally-parked vehicles are free of citations, and law enforcement officers are nowhere to be seen. Surely, practitioners of other religions or groups planning similar gatherings would be required to obtain permits for such an activity. Reportedly, the police have been ordered not to interfere with the Muslim prayer spectacle. These special accommodations for Muslims effectively elevate the Islamic faith above that of Christians and Jews, reinforcing the message of the Koran — “Allah proclaims Islam over all other religions” (48:28), “Islam will dominate other religions” (9:33), and “Islam does not coexist with other faiths” (5:51). Muslims are required by the teachings of their faith to conquer and subjugate non-Muslims and ensure worldwide submission to Islam. The believers must make war on infidels around them and let the infidels find firmness in them” (9:123). Under Islamic sharia law, Christians may not even speak to Muslims about Christianity nor provide them with any literature about Christianity. With the recent arrests of Christians in Dearborn juxtaposed with prostrate Muslim worshipers in Manhattan (where a mosque is planned at Ground Zero at the same location where a church will not be rebuilt), it appears that the principles of Islamic supremacy and prohibitions against Christian proselytizing have begun to gain traction in America. Meanwhile, Christianity in America is withering as bible study is eradicated in public schools, crosses are removed from the public square, and “winter holidays” replace Christmas celebrations. Remarkably, as Christianity is being dethroned and denied public expression, Islam is being unabashedly and openly promoted in what has been a Christian country for over two hundred years. It is truly remarkable that as American students chant prayers in Arabic in California’s classrooms, Christmas music and graphics that refer to both Christmas and Chanukah are prohibited in New Jersey.

Censure of nonMuslims

Further, the First Amendment, free-speech rights of non-Muslims are being curtailed amidst the demands of Muslims who operate under few constraints. While non-Muslims are selfcensoring out of fear and being shut down by authorities, Muslims enjoy almost unfettered rights to speak out. For example, leading up to the 9th anniversary of the Muslim attack on 9/11, Pastor Terry Jones of Florida announced that he would burn the Koran in protest of the proposed Ground Zero mosque. Not only was Jones’s life threatened by Muslims, but an Obama administration official asked him to cancel his plans. New York Governor David A. Paterson commented in response to Jones’ threat: “More and more, particularly this year, I feel that the memory of those who were lost is being disrespected.” However, Paterson did not criticize the Muslim threat on Jones’ life, nor the plan itself to build a mosque over the remains of the victims of Islamic terrorism killed on 9/11. While Pastor Jones was punished by the loss of his mortgage and insurance and was presented with a bill for $180,000 for security by the City of Gainesville, Muslims avoided any public opprobrium even though twenty innocent people around the world died during Muslim protests against Jones. Like the response to the Danish Mohammed cartoons years earlier, the Koran-burning activity was suppressed and censured as disrespectful to Muslims. It was even compared to the burning of churches and synagogues. Yet Muslims who threatened violent reprisals against Jones were not warned that attempts to curtail First Amendment rights and even mayhem, assaults, or murder would not be tolerated and would be punished to the full extent of the law. In another instance of free speech rights violations, when New Jersey Transit Authority (NJTA) worker Derek Fenton burned a Koran near Ground Zero on 9-11, he was promptly removed by authorities as much for the perceived insult to Islam as for his own safety. The very next day, he was fired from his job of eleven years. In October, NPR reporter Juan Williams was fired for expressing on Fox News a fear shared by the majority of Americans in a post-9/11 world — his

Cover Feature discomfort about being on a plane with people who dress as conservative Muslims. Thanks to pressure from CAIR, a Hamas-supporting, extremist-linked organization, Williams was punished for this thought crime and, without first talking to Williams, an NPR spokesperson broke the news on Twitter. Ironically, CAIR spokespersons are regular guests on NPR programs. Cartoonist Molly Norris was forced to disappear after declaring April 20 “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day.” Norris ignited a religious firestorm

with radical Islamic cleric Imam Anwar al-Awlaki publicly ordering her execution. Under FBI recommendations and at her own expense, Norris went underground, changing her name and identity. She is no longer publishing cartoons at the publication where she has been a regular contributor.

Freedom of speech for muslims

Whereas Norris was forced to enter a witness protection program in response to a fatwa against her, Islamic leaders enjoy unlimited freedom to spread their messages of hate within the United States. Some even receive protection at taxpayer expense, as did Feisal Abdul Rauf, an EgyptianAmerican Sufi imam who plans to build a mosque at Ground Zero. Rauf is closely associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and Muslim Brotherhood organizations, endeavors to supplant U.S. law with sharia, and refuses to condemn jihadist groups and terrorism. In addition, he refused to sign a pledge revoking the mandatory death sentence for Muslim apostasy, has encouraged U.S. government officials to negotiate with the terrorist group Hamas, and blames the United States for 9/11. Imam Rauf, who created the sharia Index Project, which rates countries around the world on sharia compliance, has said that he believes in sharia supremacy. Tariq Ramadan, a highly controversial leader in the fundamentalist Muslim world and the grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan Al-Banna, visited the United States in April. As a keynote speaker at the Hamas-supporting Council on American Islam Relations and as a speaker before another Muslim Brotherhood organization, the Muslim American Society, Ramadan refused to condemn the sharia law provision that calls for stoning women for alleged improprieties or to denounce suicide bombing. Ramadan is suspected by U.S. intelligence of

having ties to al-Qaeda. He espouses amicable messages of peace and respect when speaking with Western audiences, while endorsing Wahhabism and spreading hatred of the West to Arabic-speaking audiences. Even Muslims targeted by our own government for their crimes receive protection. Anwar al-Awlaki, dubbed the “bin Laden of the Internet” and suspected of having prior knowledge of 9/11 by having met privately with two of the 9/11 hijackers, has been defended by the American Civil Liberties Union. After President Obama approved placing Awlaki on a government assassination list, the ACLU initiated a lawsuit against the U.S. government challenging the order to kill him. This despite Awlaki being on the FBI’s Most Wanted List and his having met and corresponded with Major Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood assassin. He trained the Christmas underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, and was the inspiration for Faisal Shahzad, the attempted Times Square car bomber. In a recent video delivered to CNN, Awlaki stated that Muslims are obligated to wage jihad against the United States. Nine years after 9/11, in contrast to protections enjoyed by Muslims, individuals perceived by Muslims to have damaged Islam in some way have been threatened, fired, and publicly censured. This development indicates how far we have come down the road to dhimmitude, a subservient status in relation to Muslims. Clearly, if Norris had organized a Draw Jesus or Draw Moses Day, her life would be very much intact. If Juan Williams had talked about his fear of fundamentalist Christians, he would still be an NPR host in good standing. Had Jones burned the Old Testament, twenty people murdered by Muslims jihadists would still be alive, his reputation would be untarnished, and his financial situation would be undamaged. Had Derek Fenton burned a copy of the Old or New Testament, it is unlikely that the NJTA would have taken any action against him.

Islamization of America

We are witnessing a transformation of American society in which Islam enjoys a privileged place among the country’s religions. The sensitivities of the country’s three to five million Muslims are considered above those of non-Muslims. Non-Muslims even assist sensitive Muslims in the weeding out of potentially offensive statements or actions that could be remotely critical of Islam or Muslims. Since 9/11, Americans have been well-trained not to talk about Islam and terrorism or to use the word “jihad.” Publicly criticizing, voicing concern about, or even expressing fear about Muslim behavior or activities is forbidden. While other religions may be freely criticized, lampooned in cartoons, and denigrated by artwork, Islam is sacred, supreme, and beyond reproach. Every effort is made in the United Continues on page 14>>

Ryan O’Neal

TV roles in early career

O’Neal appeared in guest roles on series that included The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Bachelor Father, Leave It to Beaver, Westinghouse Playhouse and Wagon Train. In 1961, he and Leonard Nimoy guest starred in the episode “Doctor’s Orders” on the syndicated western series Two Faces West. In 1962–1963, O’Neal was a regular on NBC’s Empire, another western. He played 21-year-old rancher’s son Tal Garrett. On October 3, 1962, a week after the premiere of Empire, O’Neal guest starred in the premiere episode of the ABC’s Our Man Higgins, starring Stanley Holloway. O’Neal gained enormous popularity from 1964–1966 on the hit prime time ABC soap opera Peyton Place (with fellow newcomer Mia Farrow).

Feature film success

O’Neal’s film career took off beginning with his role in Love Story (1970), earning a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. In 1973, he was #2 in the Annual Top Ten Box Office Stars, behind Clint Eastwood. He starred in a series of films for director Peter Bogdanovich, beginning with the screwball comedy What’s Up, Doc? (with Barbra Streisand, 1972); following were Paper Moon (with daughter Tatum O’Neal in an Oscar-winning role, 1973), and Nickelodeon (1976, again with Tatum). Other films of the 1970s included Barry Lyndon (directed by Stanley Kubrick, 1975), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Oliver’s Story (1978, a sequel to Love Story), and the car chase film The Driver (directed by Walter Hill, also 1978).

Later career

His film career faded by the end of the 1970s. He starred as a character loosely based on director Bogdanovich in Irreconcilable Differences (1984). He returned to TV in the short-lived CBS series Good Sports (1991, with companion Farrah Fawcett), and as a recurring character on Fox’s Bones (2007–). In 2011, Ryan and his daughter, Tatum, attempted to restore their broken father/daughter relationship after 25 years. Their reunion and reconciliation process was captured in the Oprah Winfrey Network series, Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals.

Relationships and family

O’Neal was in a long-term (off and on again) relationship with the late actress Farrah Fawcett until her death. In June 2009, O’Neal said he asked Fawcett again to marry him. O’Neal reported that this time she said yes, and stated that the wedding would happen “as soon as she can say yes.” No ceremony took place before Fawcett’s death on

He has four children: Tatum O’Neal and Griffin O’Neal (with Moore), Patrick O’Neal (with Taylor-Young) and Redmond James O’Neal (born January 30, 1985, Los Angeles; with Fawcett). Ryan’s youngest son, Redmond, continued his legal problems and was arrested for firearms and drug charges during a traffic stop in Santa Monica on August 2, 2011. For several years, Ryan was estranged with his elder three children, Patrick, Griffin, and Tatum. However, in 2011, Tatum reconciled her relationship with her father through a book and a television show. On August 4, Patrick O’Neal appeared with his father and Tatum for Redmond’s court appearance for the firearms and drug charges arrest Redmond pleaded notguilty to the charges.

On February 4, 2007, O’Neal was arrested for allegedly assaulting his son, Griffin, in Malibu, California, but the charges were dismissed. Ryan and Redmond O’Neal were arrested on September 17, 2008, after authorities said they found methamphetamine at the actor’s Malibu home during a probation check on Redmond. The elder O’Neal was ordered to participate in a drug awareness program, with Redmond to receive drug rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. Redmond was later incarcerated on separate charges, and briefly allowed to leave jail twice, once to visit his dying mother and later to speak at her funeral.

The Tuskegee Airmen initially were equipped with Curtiss P-40 Warhawks

fighter-bomber aircraft, briefly with Bell P-39 Airacobras (March 1944), later with Republic P-47 Thunderbolts (June–July 1944), and finally the fighter group acquired the aircraft with which they became most commonly associated, the North American P-51 Mustang (July 1944). When the pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group painted the tails of their P-47’s red, the nickname “Red Tails” was coined. Bomber crews applied a more effusive “Red-Tail Angels” sobriquet.

Before the Tuskegee Airmen, no African American had become a U.S. military pilot. In 1917, African-American men had tried to become aerial observers, but were rejected, however, African American Eugene Bullard served as one of the members of the Franco-American Lafayette Escadrille. Nonetheless, he was denied the opportunity to transfer to American military units as a pilot when the other American pilots in the unit were offered the chance. Instead, Bullard returned to infantry duty with the French. The racially motivated rejections of World War I African-American recruits sparked over two decades of advocacy by African-Americans who wished to enlist and train as military aviators. The effort was led by such prominent civil rights leaders as Walter White of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, labor union leader A. Philip Randolph, and Judge William H. Hastie. Finally, on 3 April 1939, Appropriations Bill Public Law 18 was passed by Congress containing an amendment designating funds for training African-American pilots. The War Department managed to deflect the monies into funding civilian flight schools willing to train black Americans. War Department tradition and policy mandated the segregation of African-Americans into separate military units staffed by white officers, as had been done previously with the 9th Cavalry, 10th Cavalry, 24th Infantry Regiment and 25th Infantry Regiment. When the appropriation of funds for aviation training created opportunities for pilot cadets, their numbers diminished the rosters of these older units. A further series of legislative moves by the United States Congress in 1941 forced the Army Air Corps to form an all-black combat unit, despite the War Department’s reluctance. Due to the restrictive nature of selection policies, the situation did not seem promising for African-Americans since, in 1940, the U.S. Census Bureau reported only 124 African-American pilots in the nation. The exclusionary policies failed dramatically when the Air Corps received an abundance of applications from men who qualified, even under the restrictive requirements. Many of the applicants already had participated in the Civilian Pilot Training Program, in which the historically black Tuskegee Institute had participated since 1939.

Where travel & military history meet The Aztec Eagles of WW II

Most travelers know Cozumel as a destination resort famous for its world class scuba diving and snorkeling, beautiful beaches, the ancient Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, Chankanaab Park, a wide range of lodging and restaurant options and very friendly people. But on our vacation, I also discovered an interesting, rarely told account about a few brave men. One afternoon, my wife and I were sightseeing and we drove by a fenced in field that appeared to be a military base. At the entrance gate, a circa-WWII fighter plane was on display. I was intrigued, asked a few questions and a story unfolded that revealed a small slice of history, little known in the U.S. There is anecdotal evidence that the Nazis “invited” the Mexican government to join their cause and attack America from across the border. Mexico declined the offer and, after Nazi submarines sunk three Mexican tankers that were delivering crude oil to the United States, the 201st Mexican Air Fighter Squadron was established as part of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force to assist the Allies in the war effort. In 1944, the squadron left for extensive air-warfare training in Texas. At that time, its pilots nicknamed themselves Aquilas Aztecas – the Aztec Eagles. The group included over 300 support crew volunteers for the 30 pilots. There, they flew the AT-6, Vultee BT13/15, Curtiss P-40 fighter and the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt fighter-bomber. Unfortunately, two pilots died in flying accidents during this period. In

April 1945, the group sailed on the SS FAIRISLE: destination — the Philippines. After they arrived in Manila, they were assigned to the U.S. 5th Air Force attached to the 586th Fighter Group based in Luzon. While in the Pacific Theater, the Aztec Eagles participated in more than 90 combat missions, totaling more than 1,900 hours of flight time in support of U.S. and Filipino troops. They also undertook long-range missions to the island of Formosa (now Taiwan). In August 1945, they flew their last combat assignment as a full squadron, escorting a convoy north of the Philippines. By the end of their tour of duty, five more pilots had been lost; one shot down, one crashed in bad weather and three ran out of fuel and died at sea. The 201st earned a commendation from General Douglas MacArthur who, at that time was the Field Marshall of the Philippine Army. The Aztec Eagles returned to Mexico City at the end of November in 1945 and were greeted as national heroes. Even now, there is a yearly celebration marking their return from the war. Squadron 201 is still on active duty, flying out of the 4th Air Military Base in Cozumel, Quintana Roo. So the plane that we stumbled upon while driving

around beautiful Cozumel, led to a surprising history lesson relating to Mexico’s contribution to winning WWII. Remember that on your next trip to Mexico! Safe travels and enjoy the journey… Howard Hian www.Travels-with-Hian.com Thanks to the Cozumel Visitor Bureau, www.cozumel.travel, and Sr. Aldo Flores for background information, historical data and photos.

My mom and dad used to tell me that all you can do is try your best with everything you do. They weren’t referring to just softball, my flute and grades it was more of a sweeping statement about life which now I completely understand the meaning of those words. This is something I pray I’m passing onto my children in the hopes that it sinks in and they’ll realize the meaning like I did. Activities and priorities define our lives within the Marine Corps so which do you chose first and when? When I think of activities its mission projects, baseball practice, dance class, surfing lessons, horseback riding camps and girl scouts and that is only some of my girls’ schedule. When everyone’s activities are overlapping, we’re crunched for time and low on energy I honestly close my eyes tight and wish for a twin or at least a raffle win on a good top of the line robot. Priorities are defined as something given or meriting attention before competing alternatives. Well now competing alternatives; that’s everyday life for military families. I know most of us have them so that rigid idea flies right out the window. Life is all a delicate balancing act

and in our family we try to include everyone’s interests by choosing a few interesting activities we all like to do throughout the year. Whether it’s to a Marine Corps event, vacationing to a new place or visiting family in Texas; we’re together whether by plane or Chevy pickup truck. We’ve been on a driving kick lately with travel so even in the almost unbearably long stinky feet smell, music-blaring everything from 70’s rock to country music, dogs jumping around in the backseat and “Are we there yet?” questions; we tough it out together. In the wave of modern era mixed with the fast paced lifestyle we lead I believe our priorities can be co-mingled into our activities. Most consider family and friends high priorities so spend time together, have family conversations, teach the kids life lessons and add family & friends to the recipe to keep everyone centered, balanced and grounded. It takes a village to maintain sanity so we are overly blessed to be able to turn to friends who are family and fill in when needed for venting, a shoulder to lean on or an awesome dinner guest whose kind enough to bring your favorite bottle of wine they know is needed. Cover Feature Continued from page 7>> States to accommodate Muslims and engage them in interfaith dialogue and community affairs. Muslims may pray openly in public — on city streets and in airport terminals. Many U.S. government departments hold Iftar dinners to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The Ground Zero mosque will be built over the ashes of 9/11 victims, but the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed by Muslims will not. Non-Muslims enjoy no such privileges or special treatment in Muslim countries. They may not visit Mecca nor build churches or synagogues. U.S. forces stationed in Saudi Arabia are prohibited from wearing visible religious symbols. The foregoing examples, not exhaustive by any means, point to the fact that we are living under a de facto sharia law system in the United States today that has compromised the freedoms we have enjoyed under our Constitution — freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. Now, we no longer enjoy equal protection under the law. Our uniquely American virtues of tolerance and freedom have worked against us to produce intolerance and oppression. This has led to the stealthy introduction of sharia law and a climate in

which criticisms of Mohammed and Islam are no longer possible without serious repercussions. Instead, claims of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bias are rampant. Yet consider the following: the Muslim atrocity of 9/11, the attempt by the Nigerian Muslim Abdulmutallab to detonate plastic explosive in his underwear on a Northwest Airlines flight in 2009, the massacre of thirteen soldiers at Fort Hood by jihadist psychiatrist Nidal Hassan in 2009, the failed bombing of Times Square by Faisal Shahzad last May, the violent jihad plot in North Carolina planned by Daniel Patrick Boyd, the recent storming of a Baghdad church and murder of 58 Christians, the UPS plot to bomb synagogues in the Chicago area uncovered this past weekend, and countless other incidents over the past several years. It is not irrational and biased to fear practitioners of a religion who are trying to kill non-Muslims based on teachings from their religion’s doctrine. Apologists for Islam whitewash these events, but Islamic teachings (Reliance of the Traveller, o4.9, p. 590) specifically state that a Muslim’s life is worth three times that of a Christian or Jew and fifteen times more than that of a Zoroastrian. (The Consulate General of India, Jeddah lists indemnities for Hindus and Buddhists at 1/15 that of Muslims). When non-Muslims so much as express any discomfort with Muslims and Islamic ideology, they risk public censure, financial ruin, loss of livelihood, and even death. The United States is truly under sharia law when it is forbidden and a punishable offense to call out Islamic doctrine for what it is.

What is Sharia law?

S

haria law is “the path that must be followed by a Muslim.” It brings together elements from the Koran and the Hadith (a collection of the deeds and words of Mohammed), plus judges’ rulings from Islam’s first centuries. It was fixed by about the 10th century, and contains detailed instructions for practically every aspect of life. In the West, it is most famous for its penal code: the prescribed punishments for sexual offenses, which include stoning; for theft, which include amputation; and for apostasy, for which the punishment is death. Much more important for most Muslims, however, are the parts of Sharia that relate to the status of women, to contracts and to family law. These include provisions that allow men several wives and that enshrine, in law, the inferiority of women. Women can be divorced merely by their husbands reciting, “I divorce you” three times; their testimony is worth less than that of men; and they cannot marry a non-Muslim man, although it is permissible for a Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman. It is the parts of Sharia such as these mentioned that come into immediate conflict with Britain’s secular law, which is committed to treating all citizens equally. It is those provisions which Muslim clerics most want to cordon off from any secular influence. 14 October 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

Under the armor

There are men and women in the military today experiencing a conflict within their own human mind. After returning from a deployment, soldiers find themselves in traumatic transitions. When these transitions occur, good sincere and committed people either find themselves on opposite sides of the transition or caught in the middle. A deployment might not always be the only case, however, when emotional trauma has occurred. There could be a variety of reasons a fellow soldier is experiencing a personal battle with his own spirit. Being human, we have a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information. Sometimes we seemingly grow distant from the troubled souls in our midst. We unfortunately are so busy with our own lives that we are not able to see the instability before it is too late. The recent case of Private Russell Marcum whom was bought up on burglary charges before escaping his “unit custody” is a prime example of the kind of torment our fellow mates are experiencing. Was this kind of behavior deliberate by Private Marcum? Was it the result of a three-month deployment in the “Stan?” Whatever the reason is, were there any signs that this young man was about to “lose it?” If so, what are those signs and could this kind of behavior been prevented? Deployments as well as other traumatic events can no doubt provide a psychological punch. I feel it is our duty to try to help our man endure. To remind him of the courage, honor and sacrifice that has been the glory of there past. Making good faith efforts to emphasize and promote support is not always the easiest thing to do. Let us not wait however for another tragic event to occur in order to learn how we can help and identify others who are suffering around us. A few signs to be aware of when the altered psyche is present are excessive alcohol abuse, rational thinking lost, over abundance of medication, sudden significant decline or improvement of moods and persistent thoughts about the possibility of something bad hap-

y l i r a milit king spea pening. All of these signs are not only significant in the work place but at home and socially as well. There is staff readily available on base to contact where proper and professional help can be provided. I knew of a man who went AWOL during a rigorous training program in San Diego. According to my source, the man indulged in recreational drugs and did not return to base to finish the courses required. I always think to this day if there was anything that could have been done to prevent such behavior? My heart goes out to this man and the many other men and women who just do not have the words or the courage to say… Help.

Corpsman awarded Bronze Star after 66 years Earlier this month, PhM 2/C Bill “Doc” Lynne, George Company, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1ST MARDIV was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his heroic actions during World War II’s Battle for Okinawa. Nearly 67 years following Doc Lynne’s courageous and valorous actions, Marine Maj. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson presented the medal to him during the World War II, G 2/5’s Last Reunion in Detroit, Michigan. The citation reads: “The platoon to which Petty Officer Lynne was assigned began sustaining casualties from automatic weapons and mortar fire. Ignoring the intense fire, he selflessly exposed himself in order to aid a fallen comrade. Assessing the damage to the Marine’s neck and the Marine’s inability to breathe, Petty Officer Lynne with the assistance of another Marine, in a calm and thoroughly professional manner, expertly performed a tracheotomy, thereby undoubtedly saving the Marine’s life. Still under intense fire, he continued to treat and evacuate his comrade. Word of his bravery and medical acumen spread

It makes no difference how long you’ve been alive, they’re all ended. This day is absolutely new. You’ve never lived it before.” What an opportunity! However, an old Chinese proverb says that, “people in the West are always getting ready to live.” Does this possibly sound familiar or ring true in your life? Are we waiting to live until we have the lives we are planning for or want them to be? It is said that how we look at things in our world, and the people in it, is a reflection of ourselves. A poem I heard before gives this great meaning. “I knelt to pray when day was done And prayed, “O Lord, bless everyone; Lift from each saddened heart the pain, And let the sick be well again.” And then I woke another day And carelessly went on my way;

Yet, once again, when day was done, I prayed, “O Lord, bless everyone.” But as I prayed, into my ear There came a voice that whispered clear: “Pause now, my daughter (son), before you pray; Whom have you tried to bless today? God’s sweetest blessings always go By hands that serve Him here below.” And then I hid my face and cried, “Forgive me, God, I have not tried. Let me but live another day, And I will live the way I pray.”

With the continuing war and constant threat of war, terrorism, daily struggles, work or lack of, the financial concerns rocking the globe, family responsibilities and an endless list of to do’s… we all may face a time we call our finest hour. How will we respond? Every year, every month, every day, hour and minute, are times of new beginnings. Maybe that is the reason that God closes the day with the curtain of night to put an end to the day that is done. It has been said, “All of your yesterdays ended last night.

The whole day long, I did not try To wipe a tear from any eye. I did not try to share the load Of any brother on the road; I did not even go to see The sick man, just next door to me.

No matter what sorrows weigh us down or tears we may spill at night on our pillow, joy can come to each of us all in every new morning. Norman Vincent Peale’s lifelong motto was, “Trust God and live one day at a time.” After all, life is just a collection of days, minutes and hours. Your finest hour may be just ahead in one of life’s little challenges. Christopher Columbus had to have the type of attitude we should embrace in our life. He was scoffed at and ridiculed for his beliefs and desire of wanting to sail around the earth. Yet through his taking “one day at a time,” his finest hour came, he was finally financed and we are the direct beneficiaries of his efforts. The rest is history, and thanks to him and others like him, today we have this great country that we love. This month as we enjoy the celebration and remembrance of Columbus’ accomplishments, we ought to remember that it was done through his ability to keep the right attitude and determined faith in his God. May we be ready for the finest hours in our life with the proper attitude is my prayer for us all this week. It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renews a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless this great country. Don’t judge a book... bat Action Ribbons, Combat Action Badges, and Purple Hearts. The effectiveness of the FETs has had the pentagon discussing creating a Military Occupational Specialty, or MOS, and designated units for these warriors, meaning that they are likely going to be with us for a while. Though these teams are effective and praised in the combat environment, they face situations that their male counterparts don’t have to endure. These teams are made up entirely of volunteers; many aren’t from the same units. When they return home, their teams are disbanded, and they lose their support. They are often rejected, or have to prove themselves with male combat veterans. Because of their difference in experiences, it makes it difficult for them to identify with other female noncombat veterans. These conditions have the potential to create a perfect storm. Female combat veterans are a new population. It is not fully understood how their combat experiences will impact their lives. Because of their unique experiences, there aren’t many programs developed to help with problems that may arise, but there are some things that we as a nation can do, listen and give these warriors the respect they’ve earned. 12.625 in.

By Christopher Lawrence Outreach Specialist/Group Facilitator, Warrior Traditions Program, VVSD When I was a child, I was often told to not judge a book by its cover. It seems that as adults, many people have forgotten this. We get so wrapped up in what we think someone or something should be like, and when we see something that challenges our understanding we reject it. Our current wars are forcing us to change our understanding on what a combat veteran is. Since the revolution, women have had a role in protecting America. In the early years, women concealed their gender and used false names to fight along men. Today over 200,000 women are serving, and make up roughly 15% of the active military. The current war’s blurred battle lines are inadvertently putting some women in the fight, while others ask for it. The culture of our current battlefields is making it necessary to create combat trained, volunteer, female only teams (Lionesses and Female Engagement Teams or FETs) to interact with the local women. These conditions are putting these ladies directly in the fight. These teams are making it not uncommon to see battle hardened female Marines and soldiers with Com-

Seals of the nation’s five armed services are embedded in the statue’s base, which also will serve as a time capsule containing narratives provided by San Diego area former prisoners of war. elcome to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, home of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing, and the largest and best military air show in the nation. We are pleased to welcome back the world-famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels for what is sure to be another thrilling performance. Additionally, MCAS Miramar is honored to host an amazing line up of military and civilian performers, including the AV-8B Harrier, the F/A-18 Hornet, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the Marine Air and Ground Task Force Demonstration Team. talented aviators demonstrating their incredible flying abilities, but the MCAS Miramar flight line will also feature static displays, including past and present military equipment exhibits, air show memorabilia and plenty of refreshments to keep you cool while you enjoy the inspiring feats of these pilots. Stop by and explore our military aircraft, or just sit back and enjoy the show. Please take time to talk to the Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen who are there to support the show. Many of the young men and women you will meet have already deployed numerous times to secure peace throughout the world. Their enthusiasm for what they do, and their passion for protecting our way of life, will impress you. In addition to our uniformed personnel, we salute the mili-

tary families who support their loved ones, constantly answering the call of duty. Take a moment to thank these men and women who have routinely deployed to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. They are American heroes. MCAS Miramar has a long, rich history with the citizens of San Diego, and also with those from around the nation. We value this relationship, and consider it an honor to serve and protect the citizens of the United States. On behalf of MCAS Miramar’s Marines and Sailors, we would like to thank San Diego for its unprecedented support of our young men and women in uniform. The air show is our way of thanking you for all you do. We are honored to share this incredible experience with you and truly hope you enjoy the air show.

The Marine Corps has forged a winning team with its air power and ground forces. One hundred years ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright took turns guiding their wood and fabric Flyer over the dunes of Kitty Hawk, N.C. Just over five years later, the Navy had made up its mind to acquire flying machines. Unfortunately, the then-Secretary of the Navy stated, “The department does not consider that the development of the aeroplane has progressed sufficiently at this time for use in the Navy.” The Navy persisted, and by 1912 had four aviators on its rolls. Aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss was training pilots and developing flying boats here in San Diego. Daring pilots were making carrier landings and take-offs and learning to drop bombs on ships and trenches. On May 22, 1912, Marine Corps 1st Lt. Alfred A. Cunningham reported for flight training. He soloed after only two hours and 40 minutes of instruction (in a Wright Bros. Model B-1), and became Naval Aviator No. 5. In his honor, May 22 has become the official “date of birth” of Marine Corps aviation. When the United States joined World War I in 1917, the Marines Corps had just five aviators and 30 enlisted men, including Cunningham. At war’s end, Marine aviation included 282 officers and 2,180 enlisted men. Marine aviators won two Medals of Honor during World War I. Marines learned close ground support while fighting rebels in Nicaragua, again earning awards for bravery, including the Medal of Honor for close air support. The sudden immersion of the United States in World War II found the Marines on the front lines, defending Wake Island against a better-equipped, more-experienced Japanese force. Marine aviators led the attack in the famous Battle of Midway, an American victory despite high losses to pilots and aircraft. Marines ended World War II with 125 aces and eight Medals of Honor. The Marines’ F4-U Corsair had become famous as a symbol of Marine Corps ground support and air superiority in the Pacific. The Marines continued their close relationship of air and ground forces in Korea, deploying jet aircraft and helicopters for the first time while still making excellent use of the legendary Corsair. The introduction of helicopters in combat increased mobility in rugged terrain and, combined with field hospitals, greatly reduced the number of combat deaths in the field. The 1960s found Marines fighting communism in the swamps and jungles of Vietnam while at the same time pioneering America’s entry into space. The first U.S. combat troops brought

into this Southeast Asian conflict, American Marines landed at Da Nang in 1965, supported by F-4B Phantom IIs and A-4D Skyhawks. From Hue to Chu Lai to Khe Sanh, Marines on the ground depended on their “Flying Leathernecks.” And in 1962, Marine Corps Col. John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth, a voyage lasting less than five hours. (In 1998, Glenn returned to space as the oldest American to do so, with 144 orbits over nine days). Marines have deployed to many exotic locations, from operations in Grenada and Panama to the protection of American Embassies under attack around the world, before being called upon in Operation Desert Storm, Op‘07 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER

eration Enduring Freedom, and, most recently, Operation Iraqi Freedom. These operations were supported by USMC F/A-18 Hornets (refueled in flight by the Marine Corps’ own KC130J tankers), AV-8B Harriers, and squadrons of rotary-wing aircraft (including the CH-46, CH-53E, UH-1N and AH-1W). As America moves into the 21st century, newer, more modern technology is moving into the air, with the tilt-wing MV-22 Osprey and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter soon to join Marine west coast air units. But, certainly, one thing that will never change is the United States Marine Corps partnership between those on the ground and those in the sky.

Michael Jordan’s golf bag is six times more awesome than ordinary golf bags

By Jay Busbee

C

heck out this slice of golf awesomeness: a six-ring golf bag. And there’s only one man whom this could belong to: Michael Jordan himself. (Well, three men, actually, but we’re pretty sure this doesn’t belong to Scottie Pippen or Phil Jackson.) Where do we even begin with this? You think those rings are real gold, or at least some gold knockoff? I think it’s at least possible. This is one cassette player away from the Al Czervik “Caddyshack” special, and I’m not doubting the possibility that there’s a Blu-Ray player and a local wi-fi network tucked in behind those rings. The bigger issue is, why do something like this at all? I mean, it’s not like people are going to forget that Michael Jordan is the guy who won six world championships with the Chicago Bulls. Will Perdue, sure, I could see him doing this. Dennis Rodman probably has images of his rings tattooed somewhere. But Jordan? Dude, you’re so iconic you’ve got your own icon! It’s right there above the rings! (Symbolism, anyone?) Anyway, it’s MJ, and he can do whatever he wants. And these days, he wants to spend a lot of time on the golf course. Whether it’s hustling patrons at a celebrity pro-am or serving

as a vice-captain on the United States’ Presidents Cup team or advising Tiger Woods on how to get his mojo back, Jordan is all over the golf course these days. And he’s going to make damn sure you don’t grab his bag by mistake.

Tom Brady doesn’t tell the truth to the media

he joked that fans should “get lubed up” before a game, a statement which prompted the Patriots to issue a statement saying Brady meant water, not alcohol. He told Westwood One prior to the network’s Monday night broadcast: “I don’t often say exactly how I feel,” Brady said. “And I don’t often say exactly what I think. Because you don’t want to cause controversy. When there is controversy, all your teammates start getting asked about ‘What Brady said.’ Really, it becomes a distraction to the team. You’re trying to get ready for an important game on the weekend, and then now, on Thursday and Friday, the only thing that people want to talk about is some comment the quarterback on your team made. “When that happens, I feel bad and a certain responsibility to my teammates that in some way I let them down. That they have to be cleaning up a mess that I made for the rest of the team. And that’s never a position that I want to put my teammates in because we have too many other things to worry about.” In those few sentences, Brady perfectly sums up why there’s no benefit in ever saying anything interesting to reporters. Unless you’re an athlete playing a character, like Chad Ochocinco(notes) or Brian Wilson, doing so can only lead to distraction. For a guy like Brady, the goal has to be to get through a press conference having said enough to get reporters some soundbites, but not enough to have

By Chris Chase

them ask any follow-ups about what he said. Even players who don’t subscribe to this theory — Bart Scott(notes) comes to mind — still have to hold themselves in check a bit. [Check live scoring and set your lineup with Yahoo! Sports’ Fantasy Football app] It’s like when your girlfriend asks whether you like her jeans. (Or for you ladies out there, when your boyfriend asks if you can tell he’s been working biceps at the gym.) Do you answer honestly and continue the conversation or do you tell a white lie and move on? Brady’s “lying” is no different than sitting in a meeting and not telling your boss he’s an idiot. It’s more selective wording than anything. The weird thing about last week is that, as far as we could tell, there was no backlash to Brady’s “get lubed up” comments. It wasn’t until the Patriots issued a toothless denial that the story drew any national attention.

It’s been a decent start for third-year quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes), the former first round pick who’s completed 63 percent of his passes and thrown for four touchdowns in leading the New York Jets to victories in their first two games. Sanchez, though, has also thrown three interceptions. He enters Week 3 with a middle-of-theroad passer rating of 87.7. That’s an improvement over the low 70s Sanchez averaged in his first two seasons after signing a rookie contract worth up to $60 million over five years. This season happen to be the balloon year of Sanchez’s five-year deal: he’s owed $14.75 million. Like any QB drafted high, Sanchez is being paid for the potential the club figures he has to develop into a star. But while he’s progressing, there’s no way to avoid viewing his salary as anything but excessive until that big year actually comes. Hence, Sanchez is our choice to top the 2011 list of the NFL’s most overpaid players. Measuring pay vs. performance is trickier for football than for other sports. Quarterback ratings and yardage numbers are useful, but statistics in the NFL trend toward systems and game plans more so than in other sports. A top cornerback may lack big stats because opposing offenses avoid throwing to his side of the field (the Jets’ Darrelle Revis(notes), known as a top corner, picked off zero passes last season because he rarely saw the ball). So picking the most overpaid requires a touch of subjectivity and some common sense. Going down the list of the NFL’s highest 100 salaries for 2011, we focused on those whose career history is lacking not only statistically (QB passer ratings, etc.) but on those who haven’t consistently earned starting berths or who haven’t made All Pro despite collecting one of the top salaries in the game at his position. Base 2011 salaries were used, according to data kept by spotrac.com – not annual averages or one-time bonus payments. Quarterbacks joining Sanchez on the all-overpaid list: San Francisco’s Alex Smith, who’s started just 50 games while putting up mediocre stats over six seasons, and Kansas City’s Matt Cassel(notes), who is coming off a Pro Bowl season for the first time but whose $12.25 salary still dwarfs his status among top QBs. Others fitting the bill: Atlanta Falcons’ cornerback Dunta Robinson(notes), whose $5.5 million salary places him in the top ten at his position despite the fact that he’s never made All Pro and who is ranked by ESPN as the NFL’s 19th best corner, and Miami defensive tackle Paul Soliai(notes), who will collect over $12 million this season after the Dolphins tagged him as their franchise player, despite starting just 20 games in his first four years.

The top five: 1. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets 2. Dunta Robinson, Atlanta Falcons 3. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers 4. Paul Soliai, Miami Dolphins 5. Owen Daniels, Houston Texans

#1 Michael Jordan There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Michael Jordan is the best basketball player in NBA history. He was so good that he didn’t win MVP awards because of it. People got tired of voting for him so they started passing the award around to other NBA stars. In all, Jordan won six NBA Championships, six Finals MVPs, five NBA MVPs, and three All Star game MVPs. He was even selected to nine first team All-Defensive teams. Had Jordan not retired for two years the first time around, his career accomplishments would have been even more ludicrous. He almost surely would have won two more NBA Championships as well as two additional MVP awards. Luckily for the Houston Rockets, that never happened. Even with multiple retirements, Jordan is easily the best player in NBA history.

Kobe off to Italy K

obe Bryant(notes) has been offered $6.7 million to play for Virtus Bologna, an Italian team. The contract can be stripped-down to a per-game pay scale, and he can leave the squad should the NBA lockout ever end. Better yet, Bryant was raised in the country. Honestly, what’s not to like? If the NBA season is to start on time, the two sides embroiled in this current lockout have quite a bit of work to do over the next few weeks. Most peg a cutoff spot to cancel the rest of the preseason and possibly the first few weeks of the regular season as some date in mid-October, and though we’re hearing encouraging on-record winks and nods from within this mess, both sides still have a fair amount of cohesion to develop within their particular ranks before they can actually come to an agreement as to what they’re fighting for. In the meantime, Kobe could jet off to Italy. No strings attached. Bryant was raised in Italy, growing up there before returning to suburban Philadelphia to finish his high school career. His father Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was a star of sorts over there, and Kobe grew up idolizing Knick coach and former Italian league star Mike D’Antoni. So to play in the country on a per-month or even per-game basis with an out for once the lockout ends? Where’s the issue with that? Kobe Bryant(notes) has been offered $6.7 million to play for Virtus Bologna, an Italian team. Helping feed children CFC contributions help FEED THE CHILDREN provide relief to U.S. children and families In 2010, U.S. military personnel and Federal civilian employees pledged more than $1.1 million to Feed The Children through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Your generosity plays an important role in helping Feed The Children to continue our mission of providing hope and resources for those without life’s essentials. Feed The Children is a Christian, international, nonprofit relief organization with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In FY 2010, Feed The Children distributed more than 133 million pounds of food and other essentials to children and their families in all 50 states and internationally. While many people associate Feed The Children with our international efforts, they may not realize that the majority of our work is done right here in the United States. These domestic efforts consist primarily of distributing food and other essentials to children and families in need. Feed The Children works tirelessly to solicit donations of food and supplies from corporations and manufacturers. In order to distribute these goods efficiently, we work with a network of partner agencies – including food pantries, homeless shelters and churches – in all 50 states. Donations from the CFC help to cover the cost of transporting food and other essentials to our six regional distribution centers and to our partner agencies. Because of your charitable contributions,

we are able to provide these products to our partner agencies free of charge. In turn, they distribute the products free of charge to children and families with the greatest need within their communities. As rates of unemployment in the United States reach record levels, and increasing numbers of our military personnel are deployed in conflicts around the world, Feed The Children’s vision that no child or family goes to bed hungry is more crucial today than ever before. Since 2002, Feed The Children has dispatched more than 946,000 pounds of food and essentials to military bases in 13 states across the nation, to help service families who are hard-pressed to make ends meet during this difficult time. Additionally, we have shipped nearly 168,000 pounds of supplies – including personal hygiene items, books and CDs – directly to our soldiers serving in Iraq. (Tony – These are the same stats I included in last year’s advertorial. I asked Brenda Gilbert if anything new had been done since August 2010 that would affect these numbers, and she pulled info on 4 drops “to military families,” but they weren’t drops at military bases so I didn’t add them here. I also wasn’t sure if the drops she pulled were already included in the AFA drops to military families – see below – so I didn’t include them there either. Just wanted to give you a heads-up/make sure it’s okay to do it this way.) In February 2009, we established the Americans

Feeding Americans (AFA) Caravan to help children and families affected by the economic downturn. As of August 2011, the caravan had provided assistance to more than 265,000 families in some of the hardest-hit communities across the nation. In 2010 alone, more than 4,000 military families received food and personal care products from the AFA Caravan. Additionally in 2010, Feed The Children donated more than half a million dollars to national and regional non-profits assisting military families across the United States. The donations supported groups – including San Diego Armed Services YMCA, USO and Wounded Warrior Project – that assist enlisted personnel, the wounded, veterans and their families. Special initiatives such as our military relief efforts and Americans Feeding Americans are only possible because of the kindness of our donors, including those who contribute through the CFC. Thank you again for your support.

HUNGER FACES U.S. TAKE ACTION TODAY We are Americans Feeding Americans. For more than 30 years, Feed The Children has saved American lives by providing food, medicine, clothing and other essentials. In that time, we have never seen poverty and hunger so prevalent in our own country. Feed The Children has launched Americans Feeding AmericansTM, a caravan that brings Americans together to help other Americans. This is only possible through caring people like you across the nation. Yes. One in five American children is at risk of hunger. You can affect that number by supporting Feed The Children through the Combined Federal Campaign. Please join with Feed The Children to become a valuable part of Americans Feeding Americans. Thank you.

Casablanca T

his is a film that MUST belong in every video collection in the U.S. if not the world. The stories about it’s making are legendary from the constant rewrites to the apocrypha of casting stories. What is amazing to me, and the reason I believe it holds audiences almost spellbound in successive viewings, is the connection with the horrors of World War II was almost every single cast member. Sidney Greenstreet had lost a son in combat, and a number of the cast members fled Europe to escape the ravages of a Hitler regime. Even the evil Nazi character Major Strasser (played with relish by Conrad Veidt) had left Nazi Germany to escape almost sure internment and possible death in a concentration camp. Here was a man who was a legend in German film history as the murdering somnambulist (a possible warning about the Nazi soldiers to come?) and because of the vicious anti-Semitism and racism of the Germany of the ‘30s and ‘40s, we in America and in Hollywood were given a great gift. Everyone in this film is fabulous, but it is the chemistry of Rick (Bogart) and Ilsa (Bergman) been truly holds the film together. When I saw this film almost frame by frame in the limited book series of classic films that were produced in the late 1960s, I was stunned by the subtlety of facial expressions that conveyed so much of Rick Blaine’s character by a marvel-

Here’s looking at you, kid

ous actor Humphrey Bogart. There is a reason why he was named the actor of the century. While every person in the film becomes a real flesh and blood presence, the story of Rick and Ilsa is the center of this cinema feast. I must confess that I have seen this picture so many times that I can recite every single line in the movie to the consternation of my wife who can’t watch it with me anymore. The line that sticks out the most for me, and which against cheers from New Yorkers whenever it plays in the theater. It is when Bogart says to the Nazis seated at his table, “There are parts of New York I wouldn’t advise you to invade.” And what makes this line so memorable is that Humphrey Bogart did indeed star in another motion picture for Warner Brothers where that very thing formed the basis for the script. That movie was “All Through The Night.” I love this movie too, and I’m not even a New Yorker. There have been many attempts to revisit “Casablanca,” but only the original makes you really feel what it was like to live through “The Good

War” in a faraway place like Casablanca in French Morocco. Even though such trickery as midget airport workers, fog machines and cardboard cutout airplanes were utilized, this film convinces through its beautiful story with many layers, and characters that are so well realized. If you’ve never seen this movie before, shame on you and see it immediately. If you only seen it once, I believe you will come back to it more than once. This is just about the most perfect film ever made and it is a miracle that that is so considering that there were so many hands in the pie. (Excuse me for my mixing my metaphors. It’s late, and I get emotional just thinking about this classic film masterpiece.) Play it again and again and again and again, Sam.

TOP GUN rocks, plain and simple By Ocn169 (from New Jersey I can’t believe the reviews I have read about Top Gun being technically inaccurate, not enough character development, an overall simple and childish plot... gimme a freegin’ break! This film was made to look cool, sound cool, and define cool. Yeah, okay, the MiG-28s are really F-5 Tigers; I’ve read the ‘goofs’ section before. And Tom Cruise’s height. And about ‘Maverick going supersonic - I’ll be there in 30 seconds,’ and the laws of physics preventing him from covering 200 or so miles from the carrier in that time. Whatever! So what! If Top Gun had tried to be accurate and trueto-life in every respect, it would have been some ohso-serious flick like Courage Under Fire. Here’s some examples of what I mean: 1 - what’s the best way to evade cannon fire? Do a snazzy barrel roll. Problem solved! 2 - the MiG pilots have tinted visors. The good guys don’t. Go figure. 2.5 - Russian planes are actually grey or green. The 28 October 1, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

over by the fuming air-control officer. We never see him get up. Classic. 6 - even the edited TV version is a few steps above normal-cool... “you’ll be flying a cargplane [edit]... out of Hong Kong!” 7 - the way Iceman says, “Mayday, Mav’s in trouble. He’s in a flat spin, and heading out to sea.” 8 - the graceful way Top Gun maintained a PG rating, without using the F-word once. Top Gun came out in 1986. That’s 1986. Twenty fiveyears ago. It rocked then... it rocks now. Just watch it and have some fun.

The bar scene was filmed inside the Missssippi Room at San Diego’s Lafyette Hotel. MiG 28s are black. The Tomcats are... yeah, you guessed it... white! Good vs. Evil. 3 - Modern air-to-air combat is usually fought at distances of tens of miles between aircraft. Top Gun uses much cooler spitting-distance WWI era tactics. 4 - “It’s too close for missiles. I’m switching to guns!” Enough said. 5 - the generic guy carrying coffee who gets knocked

His last movie was The Harder They Fall (1956). During a film career of almost thirty years, he appeared in 75 feature films.

With no viable career options, Bogart followed his love for the sea and enlisted in the United States Navy in the spring of 1918. He recalled later, “At eighteen, war was great stuff. Paris! French girls! Hot damn!” Bogart is recorded as a model sailor who spent most of his months in the Navy after the Armistice was signed, ferrying troops back from Europe.

Trademark scar

It was during his naval stint that Bogart may have gotten his trademark scar and developed his characteristic lisp, though the actual circumstances are unclear. In one account, during a shelling of his ship the USS Leviathan, his lip was cut by a piece of shrapnel, although some claim Bogart did not make it to sea until after the Armistice was signed. Another version, which Bogart’s long time friend, author Nathaniel Benchley, claims is the truth, is that Bogart was injured while on assignment to take a naval prisoner to Portsmouth Naval Prison in Kittery, Maine. Supposedly, while changing trains in Boston, the handcuffed prisoner asked Bogart for a Humphrey DeForest Bogart (Decigarette and while Bogart looked for cember 25, 1899 – January 14, 1957) a match, the prisoner raised his hands, was an American actor. Heard the one about the . . . there anything I can do for you?”The old man replies “Yeah. Unhook my suspenders from the side-view mirror on your car!”

Medical Compliment A blonde was having sharp pains in her side. The doctor examined her and said, ‘’You have acute appendicitis.’’ The blond yelled at the doctor... ‘’I came here to get medical help, not get a stupid compliment!!’ A man goes out and buys the best car available in the US or Europe, a 2001 Turbo BeepBeep. It is the best and most expensive car in the world, and it runs him $500,000. He takes it out for a spin and, while doing so, stops for a red light. An old man on a moped, both looking about 90 years old, pulls up next to him.The old man looks over the sleek, shiny surface of the car and asks “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?.”The dude replies “A 2001 Turbo BeepBeep. They cost $500,000.””Thats a lotta money!” says the old man, shocked.

TOP RATED

“Why does it cost so much?””Cause this car can do up to 320 miles an hour!” states the cool dude proudly. The old man asks “Can I take a look inside?””Sure” replies the owner. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Leaning back on his moped, the old man says “Thats a pretty nice car, alright!”Just then the light changes, so the guy decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 320. Suddenly, the guy notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! Whhhoooooooooossssshhhhhh! Something whips by him! Going maybe three times as fast! The guy wonders “what on earth could be going faster than my Turbo BeepBeeP?” Then, ahead of him, he sees a dot coming toward him.Whooooooooooosh! Goes by again! And, it almost looked like the old man on the moped! Couldnt be thinks the guy. How could a moped outrun a Turbo BeepBeep? Again, he sees a dot in his rearview mirror!WhoooooooshhhhhhhhKaBbbbblaMMMMM! It plows into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end.The guy jumps out and discovers it is the old man! Of course, the moped and the old man are hurting for certain. The guy runs up to the dying old man and asks “You re hurt bad! Is

Drink ‘Till She’s Cute

A man stopped at his favorite watering hole after a hard days work to relax. He noticed a man next to him ordered a shot and a beer. The man drank the shot, chased it with the beer and then looked into his shirt pocket. This continued several times before the man’s curiosity got the best of him. He leaned over to the guy and said, “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice your little ritual, why in the world do you look into your shirt pocket every time you drink your shot & beer”? The man replied, “There’s a picture of my wife in there, and when she starts lookin’ good, I’m headin’ home”!

Inventive Cure

A woman went to her Health Maintenance Organization. After about 15 minutes with one of the new doctors, she went screaming down the hall. Another doctor stopped and asked her what the problem was and she explained. The second doctor went back to the first and said, “What’s the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old. She has four grown children and seven grandchildren and you told her she was pregnant?” The new doctor simply smiled and said, “Cured her hiccups though, didn’t it?”

Automotive News cars were immediate contenders in the fledging stock car and drag racing worlds of the 1950s, growing to dominate them in the next decades. • Chevrolet is the winningest brand in NASCAR and has collected more NHRA Pro Stock Manufacturers Cups than any other brand.

• Design has been a cornerstone of Chevrolet and many of its models have become icons of American culture. The soaring fins of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air epitomized the optimism of the Jet Age, while the sleek 1963 Corvette Sting Ray is regarded by many automotive historians as one of the bestlooking cars ever designed.

It is the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle with extended range. That means the Volt provides the benefits of an electric vehicle without the range limitations associated with other electric vehicles in the market – expanding the boundaries of performance and efficiency. Auto 5 Steps to Avoid Engine Overheating It is a common sight many an automobile owner is all to familiar with: A car is stranded on the side of the road with the hood open and smoke billowing out as an exasperated driver looks on shaking his or her head. An overheated engine can render a car useless in a matter of minutes. A vehicle is propelled by an engine that ignites gasoline and causes controlled explosions within. An engine can produce quite a lot of heat. Compound this with external temperatures and an overheated engine may occur. Other mechanical factors can also cause an engine to overheat. These include a faulty thermostat to regulate coolant supply to the engine and even an inoperable radiator fan. Experts say an average car engine is designed to operate within 195 to 220 F. Anything above that could cause engine failure. Overheating can cause a lot of damage to a car. It may damage and burn holes in the parts. Rings, pistons or rod bearings may become impaired, or one can blow a head gasket. Here are strategies to employ. 1. Ensure that coolant levels are maintained and there are no leaks that would cause coolant to drip out. Be sure the right coolant is being used for the particular vehicle. 2. Dirty, inadequate motor oil cannot dissipate heat as well as clean oil. Check the oil level and viscosity. Change the oil before a long trip or if it looks past its prime. 3. Confirm radiator hoses are in good working order and do not look worn out. 4. Have a mechanic check that a radiator fan is working and that there is adequate air flow through the radiator. 5. Be aware of engine temperature by watching the gauge on the dashboard. If an engine seems like it’s about to overheat, here are some steps to take. * Slow down, and pull into the right lane. Turn on the heat in the car and open the windows. This may draw heat out of the engine block, while maintaining a slow pace can continue to draw air over the engine. * Pull over and open the hood to allow the engine to cool. President Jimmy Carter, on Elvis’ Death, Elvis Presley’s death deprives our country of a part of itself. He was unique, irreplaceable. More than twenty years ago, he burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equaled. AMERICANS ARE STILL COOL! The world still thinks Americans are “coolest”: poll

They may be witnessing their global superpower influence decline in the face of challenges from other emerging players on the world stage, but Americans have been voted the world’s “coolest nationality” in an international poll. Social networking site Badoo. com (http://www.badoo.com) asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name the coolest nationality and also found that the Spanish were considered the coolest Europeans, Brazilians the coolest Latin Americans and Belgians the globe’s least cool nationality. “We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism,” says Lloyd Price, Badoo’s Director of Marketing. “But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool.” Of course, not all Americans are cool far from it. Some like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino are way

cooler than others. Americans, however, are the dudes who invented cool and who still embody it in many fields from music to movies and TV to technology. “America,” says Price, “boasts the world’s coolest leader, Obama; the coolest rappers, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg; and the coolest man in technology, Steve Jobs of Apple, the man who even made geeks cool.” Brazilians are ranked the second coolest nationality in the Badoo poll and the coolest Latin Americans, ahead of Mexicans and Argentinians. The Spanish, in third place, are the coolest Europeans. The French are voted cooler than the British, and Canadians cooler than the Belgians. This may come as a relief for Canadians, who are sometimes viewed as chronically uncool. Or, as Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian politician, once put it: “Paris, Texas stands as a metaphor for broken dreams; Paris, Saskatchewan just sounds ridiculous.” THE 10 COOLEST NATIONALITIES FIVE LEAST COOLEST 1. Americans 1. Belgians 2. Brazilians 2. Poles 3. Spanish 3. Turks 4. Italians 4. Canadians 5. French 5. Germans 6. British 7. Dutch 8. Mexicans 9. Argentinians 10. Russians

Maxim Magazine to honor men and women of the armed forces

Maxim has announced Dakota Meyer, Medal of Honor recipient, as military advisor for the brand and the release of its 13th issue honoring the military — on newsstands Nov. 1. The issue will cover an in-depth look at the second annual Maximum Warrior program and feature letters from active duty military personnel serving this great nation. Sgt. Meyer has partnered with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to raise $1 million by the Foundation’s 50th anniversary on May 28, 2012. He has also issued a “Challenge to America” to match his efforts and raise an additional $1 million to “Honor Marines by Educating their Children.” This challenge allows Americans to help wounded Marines from all conflicts, especially the past 10 years, and forever change their lives by investing in a Marine student’s future. “I chose to partner with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation on this initiative because of our common mission of supporting Marines and Navy Corpsmen families. Education paves the path for our future, and the money we raise will lead to a brighter future for the sons and daughters of many Marines,” said Sgt. Dakota Meyer.
