Jan Brewer and immigration

Prost!

Gov. Jan Brewer (R-Ariz.) said recently that her decision to deny benefits to undocumented immigrants was justified, claiming that federal law is at fault in the immigration debate.”I think everybody in Arizona [and] across the country has compassion for those children that have been brought here illegally by their parents,” Brewer said. “But it is not our responsibility. It is their parents’ responsibility. They need to follow the law.”Last week, Brewer signed an executive order denying state and local benefits to undocumented immigrants applying under President Obama’s new deferred action program. Brewer’s order also barred immigrants from applying for driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards.

BOTTOMS UP! A LOVE AFFAIR WITH TAVERNS, BARS & PUBS

For a lot of us, one of the most exciting milestones in our lives is when we reach that magical age when we’re finally old enough to buy and consume alcohol– and step foot into a bar for the first time. America has a longtime love affair with drinking and bars– alcohol seems to be the magic elixir for all our worries, and the hazy comfort of a favorite bar can be like collagen for our souls. Just seeing all the shiny glasses and

Democrat, Republican or Libertarian? companies and corporations from investing in new and diversified businesses. Our country needs new jobs desperately and if we fail to create them we will be looking at four more years of a near depression like economy. The question has been asked if we better off than we were four years ago. The answer is “absolutely not!” Can this country put up with increasing government jobs, “out of control” spending ($8 trillion dollars) and Big Brother (the government) controlling us by taking away our rights guaranteed by the Constitution. By electing a new president will we be guaranteed of a new prosperity in the United States? I don’t think so nor do many Americans, but we cannot stand by and put up with the corrupt politicians now in office. So the only choice that we have is to try a different political party. Am I saying elect a Republican president or am I referring to the Libertarians? Below is an article by the Libertarian Governor Gary Johnson. I think he makes a lot of sense.

Governor Gary Johnson released the following statement regarding the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya:

P

resident Obama is in favor of the distribution of our wealth. His idea is to tax the wealthiest 1% of our nation at a higher rate and this amount will create monies for more jobs! Republicans on the other hand say that we will lose jobs because distribution of the wealth will stop private

“It is tragic when Americans serving their country are murdered, and we both mourn their loss and honor their service. Part of honoring that service is to ask the obvious question: What U.S. interest is being served by putting our people – and our money – in places where U.S. personnel can be killed by

extremists over a video? We launched millions of dollars worth of missiles to bring down Gaddafi, and this is what we get. We hail and encourage the outbreak of an Arab Spring in Egypt, send them billions of dollars we can’t afford, — and our Governer Gary Johnson embassy is breached and our flag desecrated. In Afghanistan, we continue to put our troops in harm’s way 10 years after our post9/11 mission was complete. Why? The airwaves are filled today with political chest-pounding and calls for decisive action. The most decisive and prudent action we can take today is to stop trying to manage governments and peoples on the other side of the globe who don’t want to be managed, get our people out of impossible situations that have no direct U.S. interest, and immediately stop sending money to regimes who clearly cannot or will not control their own countries. Protecting America with a strong national defense and a rational foreign policy is our leaders’ most basic responsibility. But let us not confuse national security with senseless intervention where our interests are clearly not being served.” Richard Matz, Publisher

war through weakness

By Cal Thomas

“How could this happen?” asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in response to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others. The rioting by Muslims supposedly “inflamed” by a cheaply produced YouTube film about the Prophet Muhammad was cited as the reason, but we have learned the attacks may have been planned in advance, some to coincide with the anniversary of Sept. 11. What doesn’t Secretary Clinton get? The actions and statements of Islamic extremists have been visible for some time. In his latest obsequious gesture to the Islamic world, President Obama wants to offer $1 billion in “debt relief” to the Muslim Brotherhood leadership in Egypt. The president apparently hopes Egypt’s leadership can be bought off and will then start behaving like us. The president appears to ignore Egypt’s crackdown on political opposition, its sending tanks into the

Sinai, in violation of its 33-year peace treaty with Israel, and the persecution of Coptic Christians who are fleeing the country in droves. This is what America got in Iran, Egypt and now Libya when we helped topple dictators who were then replaced by radicals. That these and many other provocations against America, Israel and the rest of the West bring no credible response from the United States encourages and enables extremists to ramp up their violent behavior. “Paper tiger” is the term Mao Zedong used to describe “American imperialism” in 1956. “Spineless amoeba” might characterize this administration’s response to outrages performed in the name of Islam. Just as the amateurish video was not the cause of the violent attacks, neither was Mitt Romney’s critique of them. The Obama administration’s

foreign policy has failed dramatically. A recent Wall Street Journal headline had it right: “U.S. Policy in Mideast Challenged by Assaults.” Coddling, understanding, bowing and submitting to extremists only leads to more violence. History has shown and common sense tells us they only respect and fear power and consistency. What is the flipside of “peace through strength”? It is war through weakness. Iran’s nuclear bomb preparations? This administration’s response is more sanctions and more diplomacy, though these have failed. Kill our people? Send them more money. This is what we get when the administration denies statements from the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic leaders about their hatred for America, Jews, Christians and women’s equality. Do we not think they mean what they say? If not, on what basis do our leaders disbelieve them? Tyrants enjoy telling the world about their intentions. It is how they recruit followers. Think Hitler, Marx, Lenin and Mao. Tyrants aren’t the real danger, though they are to their own people. The real danger is when the West fails to recognize evil and develop an effective response to it. Asking Israel to continue to “wait” while Iran builds a nuclear bomb is madness, especially when Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has described Israel as a “disgraceful blot,” has said it should be “wiped off the face of the earth.” Islamic extremists say what they mean and mean what they say. So why don’t we believe them? Whether the Islamists are a small minority within “peaceful” Islam is irrelevant. If the bad guys are pursuing nuclear weapons and their minions are killing our ambassadors and citizens, what is there to discuss? What can diplomats do? How could this happen, Secretary Clinton? You have only to look at the one you correctly described four years ago as “inexperienced” and not ready to be president. If you continue in denial, deny this: “And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know (but) whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.” (Quran 8:60, Sahih International)

rizona lawman Joe Arpaio is gearing up for what he expects will be the toughest of his five re-election campaigns. He is facing a determined effort from immigration rights activists to push him out. A ruling may come any day in a lawsuit that alleges his department violated the civil rights of Hispanics. A second lawsuit filed by the Justice Department is making its way through the courts. And in TV ads, he doesn’t mention the signature issue that helped bring him to national prominence — a sign, people in both parties say, that illegal immigration is losing its potency. “Issues in campaigns are like flowers: They bloom, go away and then they bloom again,” GOP lobbyist Stan Barnes said. “The bloom is off illegal immigration.” Arpaio, who retains a massive $4.2 million campaign treasury, remains the favorite in the November election. In an interview, he was defiant and confident as always, and disagreed that illegal immigration has lost its political punch. “I get hundreds of people coming up to me and thanking me,” said Arpaio, the sheriff in Maricopa County, the

Jan Brewer Defends Executive Order Denying Benefits To Young Undocumented Immigrants Brewer’s order, signed on the same day that the federal deferred action program went into effect, was immediately met with massive backlash. DREAM Act supporters organized protests at Brewer’s office, while organizations like the ACLU blasted the governor for “distorting federal law.” However, she was unfazed by the criticism, instead doubling down on her crusade against undocumented immigration. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but certainly something that needs to be addressed, and I believe it’s the federal government that needs to address that, and they need to do it by changing the law, and they need to work through the Congress and do what they need to do in order to rectify what has taken place,” Brewer said. She continued: “I believe people ought to be here legally and they ought to be here with a lawful presence.” The deferred action program, which Obama announced during a June 15 press conference, allows the children of undocumented immigrants to apply for work authorization and reprieve from deportation. About 1.7 million individuals are estimated to be eligible for the program.

state’s largest, which includes much of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Whatever the relevancy of the issue at a time when the number of illegal immigrants has declined, the last several tumultuous years has trimmed the cadre of anti-illegal immigration crusaders here. Two allies — tough-talking former lawman Russell Pearce, who authored many of the state’s strict immigration laws, and Andrew Thomas, a telegenic Harvard law graduate and once the county’s top prosecutor — are out. Thomas was stripped of his law license by a state court panel. Pearce was recalled, then lost a bid to return to the statehouse last month. “There were three prime movers behind the immigration crackdown” in Arizona, Thomas said. “Two of them have been sidelined, and they’re gunning for the third.” Arpaio, who usually wins re-election by double-digit margins, allowed he may have a tighter race ahead of him. “It might be a little bigger challenge because I have people coming after me — the Justice Department,” he said, adding that he believed the federal probes were politically motivated.

Weird Myths About the Body helps keep us alert. It turns out that difficult mental tasks literally heat up the brain, while a yawn lowers the temperature. 3. The body’s largest organ is the size of six tennis courts, yet is only one cell thick The endothelium, the smooth interior lining of the more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the body, would cover six tennis courts if removed from the body and flattened. It’s been called “the brain of the arteries,” because it acts as a smart barrier to control which substances can pass from the blood into the arterial wall. 4. Hearing words and seeing colors In most people, taste, sound, and vision are distinctly separate, but those with a rare condition called synesthesia have a blurring of sensory experiences. Some actually experience tastes in response to words, while others hear sounds when they see certain colors. “The proportion of words that triggers taste varies…for those in our

Although scientists are exploring the reason behind the link, a 1992 study of hospital patients was the first to report that those with an earlobe crease were far more likely to have coronary artery disease (CAD). 2. Yawning is contagious, but less so in the summer Seeing other people yawning— even in photos—can make you yawn in response. However, a 2011 study with 80 participants per season showed that yawning in response to photos only happened 24 percent of the time in the summer, versus 45 percent of the time in the winter. Apparently, yawning cools down your brain a bit, so outside temperature makes a big difference in how likely you are to catch the urge. Scientists also report that yawning also

You can literally smell fear People can actually detect and respond to fear by smelling people’s sweat. Research funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency shows that there are different pheromones (detectable chemical substances) from armpit odor when people are afraid than when they aren’t. Their fear can literally be picked up from their body odor. 6. The scent of women’s tears reduces men’s sexual arousal A 2011 study published in Science magazine showed that tears act as a chemosignal, or a chemical substance detectable by others. Not only did men who sniffed tears (which were brought on by negative emotions) find photographs of women’s faces less attractive, the men also reported that they were less sexually aroused, and the scientific data backed it up. 7. It’s practically impossible to keep your eyes open when you sneeze A common misconception is that we shut our eyes to avoid the spray of airborne droplets. Actually, a simple reflex prompts our peepers to blink shut during a sneeze, similar to the reflex that occurs when the doctor taps your knee with a medical mallet, allergists report.

Hollywood Gossip By Liz Smith Congrats to Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds on the occasion of their weekend nuptials and of putting one over on the paparazzi and gossip sites. Privacy is possible, if you really want it. (Are you listening, Lindsay?) I think filmmaker Nick Cassavetes will soon be hearing from all sorts of people and groups, after his remarks on incest. His new film “Yellow” deals with it. But Nick, when asked about his own feelings on the subject said, “If you’re not having kids, who gives a damn? Let people love who they want. Isn’t that what we say? Gay marriage —

love who you want. If it’s your brother or sister it’s super weird, but if you look at it, you’re not hurting anybody except every single person who freaks out because you’re in love with one another.” Conservative pundits are going to have a field day. I doubt gay organizations are going to be thrilled either. To thank her Yankee Stadium fans, who endured an unrelenting downpour a few nights back, Madonna gave them a surprise rendition of one of the oldies — “Holiday.” The place went totally berserk. Madonna’s not going to change her I’m-notlooking-back ways, but it is said that even she was surprised at the crowd reaction. So maybe she’ll sneak in a couple more of the classics as her “MDNA” tour proceeds across the country. Madonna returns to New York in November, for two nights at Madison Square Garden. Endquote: I love this from pop queen Gwen Stefani, now reunited with her old bandmates from No Doubt. In a recent interview she was asked, after meeting and being attracted to her now-hubby, sexy singer Gavin Rossdale, “Did you make the first move, or did he?” Gwen: “Oh, my God, are you serious? He did! I’m not that kind of girl.”

A reader of ours, Frank Pulley, a retired Sergeant Major from the U.S. Marine Corps had been enjoying the regular opinion pieces by our publisher, Richard Matz, and thus a friendly email dialogue began between the two. Sharing thoughts on the state of affairs in America today, Richard invited Frank to submit editorial for consideration. Here is the first part in a series submited by Frank Pulley on how we could truly save America. It’s a great manifesto and well thought out plan written by a collaboration of various authers. We invite you to read on . . . Note: Continued from last issue. 7. Restore the Glass-Steagall Act. It protected our financial system for 60 years. In the 1990s, this act was disbanded, and risky “bets” were created, called Credit Default Swaps and Derivatives. It is said that there are hundreds of trillions of dollars of these kinds of “bets,” and no one quite knows what they are worth. These continue to threaten our entire financial system, and should be either stopped or immediately separated from the people’s money in the big banks and institutions. Almost all commercial banks are responsible lenders, support their communities, and have

none of these “bets;” however, the monies invested in the big investment houses (now called banks) are used to roll the dice to invest in high risk ventures — banks that do this are not banks. Each of those big investment banks should separate the people’s money from the investment monies to form two separate entities… a bank and an investment house… and both should be regulated, and not selfregulated. Unregulated Hedge funds, Wealth funds, Mutual funds and Pension funds have become risky and too big to fail. They are black holes, managed by a few and breed corruption and risk the people’s money. Community banks should have FDIC

insurance up to $250,000 per depositor. However, no FDIC funds or any other government guarantees should go to any firm that engages in derivative trading, securities underwriting or that engages in investment or risky loans. Banks are all about safety. Investments are about risk. Separate them, again. Hard working American citizens must not be the ones to guarantee risk with hard-earned dollars meant to pay for mortgages, college educations, or to live within their means. Investments and bank transactions must be slowed down until the monies can be tracked, protected and properly audited. Glass-Steagall and Anti-Trust protected our financial system for 60 years. Restore both. 8. Anti-Trust. Reinstitute and enforce Anti-Trust to prevent businesses from becoming too big to fail and harming our economy. Like GlassSteagall, Anti-Trust laws protected our financial system for 60 years before being disabled. Restore both. 9. Privatization. Privatize as many government workers as possible. Establish a bipartisan Congressional panel to review bids of all major contracts every three years. This prevents government expansion of people and benefits. You have a bottom line, a commitment and performance expectations. Hold contractors accountable. A contract is a signed pledge to perform to an agreed upon standard; both parties to a contract meet their responsibilities, and if one does not,

the other does not. 10. Charitable contributions. All non-profit entities (associations, foundations, charities, unions, or other charitable entities) will report and account for every dollar in contributions and distributions. A tax deduction will be provided for contributions to all charities but there will be no deduction or non-profit status given to those who support politics, do harm to others or aid America’s enemies. Further, there will be no transfer of funds between charitable organizations. 11. Revise Government Entitlements. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Welfare, Disability — these are programs intended to help those who really need support — the aged, the desperately ill, and those orphaned or left behind. But these programs have been abused and corrupted. We must wean off those outside the scope of the intent of these programs. These programs have become, not entitlements, but a form of enslavement. Our focus must change so instead we promote a more capable, innovative, competitive and prosperous workforce. In short, leave most social programs to the States and charities and let the Federal government again be the national cheerleader for private business and a strong economy, as it protects us from all threats, foreign and domestic. 12. Health Care Reform. This is an extremely complex issue and there are no easy answers. We need to lower our expectations or risk bankruptcy. Move

Any that do not generate considerable income should be sold by private sector brokers, with minimum commissions, and the proceeds used to pay off the debt. 15. Create a “rainy day” fund. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY: 1. Make English the official national language of America. We are a free nation, so everyone can speak in his native tongue when he likes; however, the official language for signage, ballots, drivers’ tests, government and public education in America will be English. Teach it. Embrace it. Be proud of it. And use it so America does not become a “Tower of Babble.” 2. Make Education a priority. Education would be the responsibility of the States. The States must establish standards and uphold them. Reduce costs for state schools. Teach in little red schoolhouses, if necessary, in order to provide affordable education for citizens. Build in student summer jobs to instill good work ethic and personal and community responsibility. Promote volunteerism. Consider (made in America) uniforms up to a certain grade to teach our youth proper attire and behavior, and build in enforceable standards with parity for students from differing backgrounds. Teach American and world history, reading, writing and the basics needed to become a productive citizen. Put

3. Voting. Only U.S. citizens may vote, with proof of citizenship, and the ballots will be written in the official language of the land — English. Voting will be the privilege for every taxpaying citizen 18 years and older. 4. Health care. Catastrophic injury and illness are horrific realities that many families face. But we must take responsibility for eating too much, drinking too much, using drugs in a way that counters their intent, and not exercising. Health care for the truly needy is a state government’s responsibility, but health care for those whose lifestyles bring about a medical decline is a personal responsibility. 5. Common sense. Don’t spend more than you earn. 6. Restore workplace harmony and production. Many U.S. employers are reluctant to hire U.S. workers because of a threat of lawsuits brought about for wrongful termination. This is unhealthy. Some of those lawsuits have had merit but many have not. Remove all barriers to harmony in the workplace. They must work in harmony for the business to succeed. Restore latitude to the employers to run their business versus having Government intrusion. If you hire someone, you can fire them. The employer will pay what he can afford to attract the best and brightest. 7. Know the Constitution of the United States. If anyone tries to remove the rights and privileges vested to the people, stand up. Speak up. Preserve freedom.

From Our Publisher

Is the immigration problem not one of the main issues in the upcoming election? We all realize that the economy is the most important issue and putting approximately 10% of our workforce back to work is a main priority. But if you think for one moment that the immigration problem is a non-issue, then you are sadly mistaken. The Democratic Party and President Obama realized that the Hispanic voters, the gay community, the black voters and the unions will make a difference in Obama’s reelection. They have pandered to these groups successfully and Republicans have not implemented a plan to get a portion of the vote from these minorities. As proud Americans we should have no problems with either party as long as they abide by the rules of our Constitution. But you must know this is not the case with the present administration, as they have trampled the Constitution by letting illegal immigrants into our country. It’s bad enough that some of the illegals are criminals but giving them

The Society of the Muslim Brothers is the Arab world’s most influential and one of the largest Islamic movements. It is also the largest political opposition organization in many Arab states. The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 as a Pan-Islamic religious, political and social movement by the Islamic scholar and schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna. By the end of WW II the it had an estimated two million members. Its ideas have gained support throughout the Arab world and influenced other Islamist groups with its “model of political activism combined with Islamic charity work.” My comment: So far, OK. The Brotherhood’s credo is: “Allah is our objective; the Quran is our law, the Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations.” Its most famous slogan, used worldwide, is “Islam is the solution.” My comment: Whoa! Wait a minute… Is the credo an actual fact taken from the Qoran or is it an interpre-

the right to stay in our country and giving them the right to vote is absurd! How fair is it to legal immigrants that are standing in line, obeying the rules

and yet are put at the back of the line because of the illegals? Does the president of the United States have the right to break the law by letting illegal immigrants

tation by the person or persons that pledge allegiance to it. I am not a scholar nor am I well versed on the writings or teachings of the Quran but I find it hard to believe that the prophet Mohammed would teach his disciples to kill other human beings in the name of God! I cannot believe that the majority of Muslims believe in the credo... or do they? If we take a look at all the terrorist activities in the world today, they involve mostly Muslim countries. When given the opportunity, Muslim immigrants settle into a country and then ascribe to the Brotherhood’s history of 12 October 1, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

stay in our nation? The answer is “NO,” but over the years former presidents have gotten away with breaking laws and not abiding by our Constitution. Both parties are guilty of these grievous sins and neither party nor any branch of our government has challenged these presidents and put them to task for breaking the rules of our Constitution. Most hard-working Americans are too busy trying to pay their bills and keep their heads above water to be concerned about the “SILENT INVASION” but will eventually (hopefully not too late) be aware of this dangerous immigration problem! Maybe it’s no longer politically correct to say “I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN,” but in my opinion there are no African-Americans, German Americans, Gay Americans, Mexican Americans or any other name put in the front of the word “AMERICAN.” The only acceptable word is an “AMERICAN AMERICAN.” Richard Matz, Publisher

We need the leaders of the Muslim communities to stand up and denounce these troublemakers and terrorists, and in doing so they will gain the support of all peoples and all

religions that want peace to prevail on this Earth. Richard Matz, Publisher

House Passes New ‘Stolen Valor’ Act

Those who lie about military service or make false claims about receiving military medals with the intent of benefiting from those claims would be committing a crime under legislation passed by the House last week, according to Military.com. The House’s 410-3 vote on what is known as the Stolen Valor Act came less than three months after the Supreme Court struck down the original act on the grounds that it violated First Amendment free speech rights. The new bill attempts to get around the court ruling by making clear that it applies only in cases where people lie about a military record with the aim of obtaining payment or other benefits.

Military Drinking Culture

WASHINGTON — Abusing alcohol and drugs has been part of military culture historically: Troops do it for fun, to ease the stresses of war or to be part of the brotherhood. But a new report says substance use and misuse among troops and their families has become a “public health crisis” and says Pentagon methods for dealing with it are out of date. In a study requested by the Defense Department, the Institute of Medicine report Monday said: • About 20 percent of activeduty service members reported they engaged in heavy drinking in 2008, the latest year for which data was available. (Heavy drinking was defined as five or more drinks a day as a regular practice.) • Binge drinking increased from 35 percent in 1998 to 47 percent in 2008. (That’s five or more drinks at a sitting for men, four or more for women, but done perhaps just once or twice a month as opposed to each week.) • While rates of both illicit and prescription drug abuse are low, the rate of medication misuse is rising. Just 2 percent of active-duty personnel reported misusing prescription drugs in 2002 compared with 11 percent in 2008. • The armed forces’ programs and policies have not evolved to effectively address medication misuse and abuse.

Military advance pay

The purpose of advance pay is to give funds to a member to meet extraordinary expenses incident to a Permanent Change of Station (PCS). It is intended to assist with the out-of-pocket expenses, not typical of day-to-day military living, that precede or exceed reimbursements incurred in a member’s change of duty locations. An advance of pay is not authorized for the specific out-of-pocket expenses covered by advances of other allowances and entitlements, if those advances are used (to include travel allowances and per diem, overseas station housing allowance, basic allowance for housing, and dislocation allowance). The member’s commander has a responsibility to ensure that an advance of pay is used only to help with the financial burden of a PCS. Get more information on Military.com.

Benefits of a VA Loan Now Contrary to what many Americans think, it’s a very good time for servicemembers to refinance or purchase a home. With mortgage rates continuing to hover at all-time lows and many homes selling at significantly discounted prices, it’s possible for those with good credit and income to purchase a great home. One of the unique benefits afforded to military personnel is access to the Veterans Affairs Home Mortgage Loan program. While a conventional loan might seem like a great bargain because of an advertised lower rate, keep in mind that you often need a high credit score of 720 or above to qualify for these best rates. VA Home Loan Program Benefits • The VA program won’t deny a loan based solely on a low credit score, and most lenders don’t tier interest rates for better scores. The VA usually looks at only the previous 12 months of credit history, unless a bankruptcy, tax lien or collections situation occurs. • The VA home mortgage loan doesn’t require a down payment. • Borrowers can often refinance to a lower rate within the VA program without re-qualifying. • If the borrower has a service-related disability, they may qualify for the lender to waive the funding fee.

uring the final days of World War II, the United States, apparently believing that Japan was unlikely to surrender otherwise, dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The death toll from these two bombs numbered as high as 250,000 when one factors in those who died up to four months later due to things like burns and radiation sickness. Research into the creation of an atomic bomb began in 1939 and the Manhattan Project, which developed the science behind the weapons in earnest, began in June of 1942. But in March of 1943, the United States was was developing another weapon which would have potentially spared many thousands of lives. Unless, that is, you count the lives of the millions or so bats which would have died in the process. In the mid-1940s, many Japanese buildings were still constructed out of wood and paper, which, of course, were flammable. If the U.S. could figure out a way to start fires in a large number of buildings spread out over a wide area, the Japanese infrastructure and economy would suffer but the direct loss of life would be relatively smaller. But that seemed impossible. Napalm strikes could start fires everywhere in its path, but that wouldn’t spread. And carpet bombing with many small warheads would increase the area of the strike, but most likely wouldn’t cause many fires. And of course, the death toll from either of those routes could still be rather large. But a few months before the Manhattan Project got underway, a dental surgeon named Lytle Adams came up with the idea to use bats — the nocturnal flying mammals — as part of the strategy. As he would later tell Air Force Magazine, after seeing millions of bats flying around caves in Carlsbad Canyon, New Mexico, he immediately thought that they could be used as a way to spread firebombs throughout Japan. He collected a few of them

himself, did a little research, and found that even tiny bats weighing well under a pound could carry three times their weight in explosives. He pitched his plan to the military (which apparently was not uncommon at the time) and the military agreed that there was something more to look into. Adams’ theory was straightforward. Collect a million of bats and strap timed incendiary devices to their backs while they hibernated. Stick a thousand of them each into a thousand bombs designed to open at high altitudes. Fly over Japan at night, drop the bombs, and then let the bats fly around. When daybreak comes, the theory went, the bats will hide in dark places — and given where they are, the most common hiding place will be attics. The timer ticks down shortly after and, without obvious explanations, hundreds of thousands of Japanese buildings start to burn to the ground. The idea was not just a theory, either. By March of 1943, the U.S. military had identified a suitable population of bats, having located a series of caves in Texas which was the home to millions of the flying critters. For the next year or so, at the expense of $2 million ($25 million in today’s dollars), they tested Adams’ theory. Except for one major problem — at one point, some bats got loose resulting in a major fire at the base, as seen above — the military believed that the bat bombs could actually work. One report placed their effectiveness at ten to thirty times more effective (measured by the number of fires which would have started) than conventional incendiary devices. But the final report on the bat bombs issues in mid-1944, while positive, noted that they would not be ready for combat for another year. Due to the slow time table, the military canceled the project before it could be fully developed.

Raise a stein to Oktoberfest

O

ktoberfest may be best known for beer, beer, and more beer, but, at more than 200 years old, it is also one of the longest-running German traditions. While drinking Oktoberfest-approved beer is an important component of the festivities, there are many traditional foods and activities associated with Oktoberfest as well. The Oktoberfest event may trace its origins back to October 12, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Bavaria. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding festivities, which took place in the fields in front of the city gates. The fields were later named “Theresienwise” (Theresa’s meadow) after the princess. Horse races took place, and those races were repeated the following year. As a result, Oktoberfest became an annual celebration. Oktoberfest has evolved throughout the years to include many significant traditions. Since 1950, the festival opens with a twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 p.m. by the Mayor of Munich. He cries, “O’ zapft ist!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Austro-Bavarian language) and officially opens the Oktoberfest. The Mayor then gives the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. To qualify as Oktoberfest beer, a brew must conform to the Reinheitsgebot, a German beer purity law. It must have a minimum of 6 percent alcohol. The beer also must be brewed within the city limits of Munich. Oktoberfest participants wear traditional Bavarian hats, which are made with a tuft of goat hair — a prized and expensive item in Germany. The Oktoberfest is known as the Largest Volksfest (People’s Fair) in the world. More than 7 million people are expected to participate this year. Amid the festivities and the abundance of alcohol that is served, it may seem like it would be a chaotic event. However, most Oktoberfests occur without incident thanks to emergency medical care on hand. Those who underestimate their ability to handle the rich beer tend to pass out from drunkeness and are dubbed “Bierleichen,” or “beer corpses.” Along with beer, many traditional foods are served at Oktoberfest festivals — from hendl (chicken) to knoedel (dumplings). Other Bavarian delicacies are served, including obatzda, a cheese spread.

Adolph Louis Luetgert (December 27, 1845-July 7, 1899) was a GermanAmerican charged with murdering his wife and dissolving her body in acid in one of his sausage vats at the A.L. Luetgert Sausage & Packing Company in 1897. Luetgert, born in Gütersloh, Westphalia (now Germany), moved to Chicago, Illinois in the 1870s. He married his wife Louisa Bicknese on January 18, 1878. Luetgert ran the successful A.L. Luetgert Sausage & Packing Company and was considered the “sausage king” of Chicago until being accused of murdering his wife and being sentenced to life in prison on February 9, 1898 where he died about a year and a half later. After the news of the trial became public, rumors spread that Luetgert had actually turned his wife into sausage and sold the “sausage” to unknowing consumers. Although this has been proven to be false as her body was dissolved and burned, the legend persists to this day. Another common legend about the murder is that the ghost of Louisa Luetgert haunts the old factory grounds and the couple’s former home in Chicago.

There were many “sightings” of Mrs. Luetgert after the trial began. She was sighted in 12 different states but never found. The factory

Some claim that the Luetgert factory burned to the ground in 1902, but the research of Robert Loerzel shows that the factory still stands, although a fire actually occurred on June 26, 1904. The fire only burned the inside of the building, destroying things such as the sausage vats, while leaving the external structure still standing. Today, the factory still stands on the south side of the 1700 block of West Diversey Parkway; however, it has been converted into condominiums similar to the other town homes and condominiums which now are beside it.

The NFL’s replacement officials awarded the Seahawks the winning TD against the Packers. An email to Ochoa was not returned. Mortaza was so upset after Monday night’s debacle in Seattle that he even released a statement, published by Deadspin saying his league had dispatched “a couple crews,” which he says are now “apparently” in the NFL. “We felt it was only fair,” Mortaza wrote, “that NFL fans knew the truth as to who are officiating these games.” The conclusion here is not that Mitch Mortaza is a bastion of integrity. Nor is the takeaway that Ochoa is a blight on football. (Ochoa actually has a long career of officiating at many levels of the game.) The issue is that the head of the Lingerie Football League is a diehard Redskins fan who is, like everyone else, taken aback by the best football league in the world putting an inferior product on the field. How could the NFL actually think this is OK when the head of the LFL doesn’t? [Jay Busbee: Referee’s blown interception call among sports’ all-time worst] Mortaza is aware that his league is “behind the eight ball” when it comes to the credibility of the product on the field. Let’s face it, how many people watch his players for the football? (How many even care that a football

is used in the game?) But Mortaza’s response is not to look the other way but to pay extra attention to who is running the game. “We comb colleges and Arena football,” he says. “We hire all the people that test best. We do background checks. We get a ton of people that want to referee but seldom are they qualified.” And when a referee crew is not up to snuff, at least in Mortaza’s eyes, it gets dismissed. Simple as that. When Apple, the most valuable company in the world, has a defective part, it corrects the mistake. But when the NFL has substandard personnel, it does nothing. Of course “everyone makes mistakes,” but a lot of these mistakes are correctable. There’s no reason the 49ers should have been allowed extra challenges on Sunday. There’s no reason the Titans should have been allowed extra yards after a personal foul. And there’s no reason the last play of “Monday Night Football” couldn’t have been overturned.

These weren’t snap judgments like a pass interference call. There was plenty of time for deliberation, calls made to the replay booth and adjustment. The NFL is telling us to believe in something that simply isn’t believable. And “us” includes everyone from coaches to players to the head of a football league known for skin and silicone. If the head of a lingerie football league thinks the NFL needs to raise its standards, something is terribly wrong.

rity of his sport was at stake. There is a pigskin boss who was willing to bite the bullet and admit he made a mistake. His name is Mitch Mortaza. He is the commissioner of the Lingerie Football League. And he feels the NFL has lowered its standards. Mortaza was surprised to learn a referee he says he dismissed for poor performance, Craig Ochoa, had been picked up by the NFL and placed into the NFL’s marquee Hall of Fame game. Ochoa has not served in a regular-season game so far, but he remains with the NFL as an alternate. And Mortaza just can’t get over it. “It was a bit of a shock to see guys that couldn’t officiate in our league were officiating in the NFL,” Mortaza says. [Dan Wetzel: Roger Goodell needs to immediately clean up NFL officiating mess] You may be surprised to learn Mortaza actually cares about the officiating in his league. Not many fans paying to see the Los Angeles Temptation and the Vegas Sin are going to fume about a blown call. It’s safe to say the majority of the Lingerie Football League’s fans want laundry on the field, but not the orange, flag-sized kind. But Mortaza becomes indignant when he speaks of his decision to get rid of an entire officiating crew, which included Ochoa. “They were hurting our overall broadcast caliber,” Mortaza says. “And if it’s opening up our players for potential injury, those things raise red flags here. Is it hurting overall credibility? When either of those two things are compromised, it’s time to start thinking about parting ways.” And parting ways is what Mortaza

(816) 968-1128 www.vfwfoundation.org

decided to do. “The entire crew was released due to several poorly called games which included missed calls, poor judgment and poor presentation for broadcast,” Mortaza says. The NFL disputes this, as it did when ProFootballTalk.com asked the league in August about Ochoa’s background in the Lingerie Football League. “He said that is not true,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an email, referring to Ochoa. “He was not dismissed by that league.”

Vegas books:

$300M+changed hands with NFL call By Ken Ritter and Oskar Garcia

BEST OF Military Friendly Lawyers, Attorneys & Law FIRMS

Las Vegas oddsmakers say $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on a controversial referee call that decided the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. Sports book chief Jay Kornegay said Tuesday that bettors at The LVH casino registered shock, some celebration, then anger when the outcome swung the game

in favor of Seahawks bettors. ‘’We’ve seen regular refs blow calls. That’s always been part of the sport,’’ Kornegay said. ‘’But this one was just a blatant bad call at the end of the game that decided the outcome of the game.’’ The Seahawks won 14-12 after referees ruled that Seattle receiver Golden Tate came down with the ball in a pile of bodies in the end zone after a Hail Mary pass on the play’s last game.

The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4 1/2. Had the final play been ruled an interception - as many players, analysts and fans believed was the right call - Green Bay would have won by 5 points. The officials ruled on the field that Tate had simultaneous possession with Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, which counts as a reception. The NFL upheld the call on Tuesday. ‘’I’m not complaining, but it did feel a little dirty,’’ said Wesley Wong, 25, of Toronto, who said he had a combined $1,000 on the game on wagers on Seattle and a low scoring total. Gambling expert RJ Bell of Las Vegas-based Pregame.com said an estimated two-thirds of bets worldwide were on the Packers, with about $150 million more bet on Green Bay than Seattle. ‘’Due to one call by the replacement refs, the bettors lost $150 million, and the bookie won $150 million for a total swing of $300 million on one debatably bad call,’’ Bell said. Casinos had already begun to react to replacement officials before Week 3 began, predicting the most scoring ever across the league. Now, adjustments for replacement referees that were only talked about previously are being factored into betting lines, Colbert said. Teams normally get a 3-point edge factored into the line when they play at home. That home edge could be worth a half-point more with games refereed by replacement officials, depending on

the game, Colbert said. Colbert said he believed the Monday night referees got caught up in the excitement of Seattle’s home crowd. Bettors are also reacting. Wong said he’s wagering 20 percent less on NFL games than usual because of the unpredictability of the referees and other factors. He said his friends are cutting their bets in half or talking about avoiding NFL wagers for a few weeks if the replacement officials stay in. ‘’I’m willing to put less at risk at this point,’’ Wong said. ‘’I’m not motivated to put that much on the table.’’ Johnny Avello, race and sports director at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino, said plays - and mistakes - happen each week throughout the year that decide the outcomes of bets. But this moment was magnified, he said, because it happened at the end of the game and the call single-handedly decided the outcome. ‘’If you’re a bettor, it’s going to be hard to get over,’’ he said. ‘’Some may back off, and that’s yet to be seen.’’

Rutherford Birchard Hayes was the 19th President of the United States. As president, he oversaw the end of Reconstruction and the United States’ entry into the Second Industrial Revolution. Hayes was a reformer who began the efforts that led to civil service reform and attempted, unsuccessfully, to reconcile the divisions that had led to the American Civil War fifteen years earlier. Born in Delaware, Ohio, Hayes practiced law in Lower Sandusky and was city solicitor of Cincinnati from 1858 to 1861. When the Civil War began, Hayes left a successful political career to join the Union Army. Wounded five times, most seriously at the Battle of South Mountain, he earned a reputation for bravery in combat and was promoted to the rank of major general. After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress from 1865 to 1867 as a Republican. Hayes left Congress to run for Governor of Ohio and was elected to two consecutive terms, serving from 1868 to 1872. After his second term had ended, he resumed the practice of law for a time, but returned to politics in 1876 to serve a third term as governor. two home runs in one inning ciation founded at Lake George, New • John Lee Richmond pitches 1st York major league perfect game, Worcester • Construction of Cologne Cathe1, Cleveland’s Forest City 0 dral completed (began in 1248) • 14th Belmont Stakes: L Hughes • John Philip Sousa becomes new aboard Grenada wins in 2:47 director of U.S. Marine Corps Band • San Francisco Public Library • University of California founded starts lending books in Los Angeles • First commercial hydroelectric • Koln Cathedral completed, 633 power plant begins in Grand Rapids, years after it begun Michigan • Theodore Roosevelt marries Alice • Battle of Maiwand, at which Dr. Watson is wounded, breaks out Fire Lightening, Oglalla • American Canoe Asso-

FEED THE CHILDREN Feed The Children is an international hunger relief organization that provides hope and resources for those without life’s essentials. In FY 2011, the organization distributed more than 104 million pounds of food and other essentials throughout the U.S. and around the world. In the U.S., many of the families we help were considered middle-class until the recent

economic downturn. Now, they have to choose between feeding their families and paying their bills. As long as there is a need, Feed The Children will continue to deliver help and hope to these families. Feed The Children works tirelessly to solicit donations of food and essentials from corporations and manufacturers. Donations from the CFC and other

workplace giving campaigns help to cover the cost of transporting these goods to our six regional distribution centers, as well as to a network of thousands of partner agencies – including food pantries, homeless shelters and churches – in all 50 states. Because of your charitable contributions, we are able to provide these donated products to our partner agencies free of charge. In turn, they distribute the products free of charge to those children and families with the greatest need within their communities.

Veterans News By Rick Rogers Host of Front & Center: Military Talk Radio The Center for Investigative Reporting recently released a detailed report on the Department of Veterans Affairs disability claims backlog that has grown to more than 900,000. The study by the Center for Investigative Reporting breaks backlog down by region and individual Veterans Benefit Administrative processing station. Here is a snapshot of the findings. When the study was done, 824,000 vets were waiting for VA claims to be processed. Now the number is 915,000 or more. The average wait time is 257 days. In California, which has the most veterans in the country at about 1.9 million, nearly 83,000 vets are awaiting word. In San Diego there are 29,520 vets on the waiting list with an average wait time of 291 days. For Los Angeles there are 22,547 vets with an average wait time of 363

days; Oakland checks in at 30,613 vets and 346 days. Not only do veterans have long waits, but a May government audit also found the VA’s Oakland office incorrectly processed 39 percent of claims. The San Diego office made mistakes in 53 percent of claims; and a whopping 71 percent of claims coming out of the Los Angeles office were wrong. When the best score a Southern California Veterans Benefits Administration office can achieve is a 61 there is reason to worry. But the figures also suggest who signed up to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. Admittedly the assumption hinges on the proposition that most wounded and injured troops return home to recuperate – and file VA claims. Of the four regions of the country, the East has the fewest number of vets waiting for the VA to rate them: 165,414. The West and the Central United States has 204,263 and 209,800, respectively. The South has the most at 244,796. Those who follow enlistments will

tell you recruiting is easiest in the South, Central and West and toughest in the East. Drilling into the numbers a little deeper, the West has seen the greatest percentage increase in disability claims in the last 16 months at 11.8 percent; the South the least at 3 percent. This despite the South averaging 853 claims filed there daily. Each region has seen a 30 percent increase in the time it takes the VA to respond to claims. Wait times that once ranged from 4 to 5 months now average 8 to 9 months. There are many problems associated with the long claim waits. An obvious one is no money to live on. Disability pays from $127 to about $3,100 a month tax-free. Beyond money the disability rating itself has value. A vet can leverage it to apply for preferential hiring programs or government training or a loan to start a disabled-vet owned business. Rep. Bob Filner, ranking member

of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, has suggested a radical approach to reducing the VA backlog. The VA should simply give veterans the benefit of the doubt in all disability cases. If fraud is later found, the vet should be sued for restitution. This would be nothing short of a well-intentioned nightmare. But more conventional hope is coming. In 2010 the VA delegated 37 percent of its experienced raters to do court-ordered Agent Orange disability claims. With most of those cases finished, they are now digging into the massive VA backlog. Rick Rogers has covered defense and veterans issues for nearly 30 years. He hosts Front & Center: Military Talk Radio Sundays, 11 to noon, Pacific Time, on KCBQ AM 1170 (www.kcbq. com). Tom, Dick and Harry went to a party. After the party they returned to the hotel. The hotel was 600 stories high. Unfortunately for them, the elevator was not working. They made a plan for the first 200 stories, Tom will crack jokes. The second 200 stories Dick will tell a happy story and lastly Harry will tell a sad story. They then started up the steps After 2 hours it was Harry’s turn. He turned to the other two and said “Ok guys, here’s my sad story. I forgot the keys downstairs.

Hallelujah and Amen A man bought a donkey from a preacher. The preacher told the man that this donkey had been trained in a very unique way, (being the donkey of a preacher). The only way to make the donkey go, is to say, “Hallelujah!”

And the only way to make the donkey stop, is to say, “Amen!” The man was pleased with his purchase and immediately got on the animal to try out the preacher’s instructions. “Hallelujah!” shouted the man. The donkey began to trot. “Amen!” shouted the man. The donkey stopped immediately. “This is great!” said the man. With a “Hallelujah,” he rode off very proud of his new purchase. The man traveled for a long time through some mountains. Soon he was heading towards a cliff. He could not remember the word to make the donkey stop. “Stop,” said the man. “Halt!” he cried. The donkey just kept going. “Oh, no... ‘Bible...Church!...Please Stop!!,” shouted the man. The donkey just began to trot faster. He was getting closer and closer to the cliff edge. Finally, in desperation, the man said a prayer... “Please, dear Lord. Please make this donkey stop before I go off the end of this mountain, In Jesus name, AMEN.” The donkey came to an abrupt stop just one step from the edge of the cliff. “HALLELUJAH!,” shouted the man
