Even though they say crime doesn’t pay, several rich gangsters prove otherwise. While most end up dead or in jail; a very lucky few get to spend their money.

Chris Petrovich has been prepping for more than a quarter-century. He has plenty of guns, plenty of single-malt scotch, and enough supplies hidden in an undisclosed storage locker somewhere, plus caches on roadways leading out of the state, to let him ride out virtually any emergency. He is trained in combat methods and is an expert in armor and ballistics, and he possesses a wry sense of humor about just how unprepared the rest of the world is. And like most real survivalists, he’s not happy with the National Geographic Channel show Doomsday Preppers. After we published our story on Petrovich and his fellow preppers, the TV producers came knocking. The show follows survivalists as they prepare for the apocalypse, packaging preparedness into an audience-friendly mashup of guns, crazy people, and doomsday scenarios. It’s pretty much hijacked the “prepper” identity over the past year. The next episode, “I Hope I Am Crazy,” is on Sunday at 8. Most of the Doomsday Preppers folks are living off in rural areas somewhere, with plenty of land and plenty of guns. The show caters somewhat to the perception of survivalists as wacky gun nuts, which many of the quieter preppers in urban areas think gives the movement a bad name. And the rest of the preppers they

hat am I a Democrat or a Republican? By speaking out against President Obama and the Democratic Senators and Congressmen I’ve been accused of being a radical right-wing Republican. On the other hand when speaking out against former president Bush and the Republican Senators and Congressmen I’ve been accused of being a radical left wing Democrat. The only wing I’m on is a “ Wing and

a Prayer “ that our country finds its way back to the place our forefathers meant America to be. That place is a Republic and we have been given the greatest document ever written by man the Constitution! What we must remember is that this country is not a democracy! Our forefathers were intelligent enough to recognize the pitfalls of rule by the majority and therefore they gave us a Republic, which our government is losing control

of each and every day. A classic example of democracy is what communist China has adopted to destroy the United States. China realizes they cannot destroy America by war and conflict but they can and are destroying us by using economics that even grade school children understand. You cannot spend more than you make and debt will put you are at the mercy of your creditors! If China decides to call in our national debt they can destroy the value of our dollar and we will become a 3rd world nation! If you, for 1 minute, think that this cannot happen all you have to do is check with those people who have lost everything because they were too deeply in debt and the interest was two great for them to repay their loans. Are the majority of Americans acting like ostriches with heads buried in the sand? Do we not see the destruction and devastation that America has suffered over the last six years? Are we going to continue to except the loss of our industries and businesses, our savings and our homes because of unfulfilled promises made by our president, senators and congressmen with the excuse that they

haven’t had enough time to implement their programs, and we must give them more time to destroy this country! From the rooms of the White House to the halls of Congress to the floors of Wall Street and the offices of the CEO’s we Americans are sick and tired of all the corruption, greed and lies that have been stuffed down our throats. The up-and-coming debates between Pres. Obama and Mr. Romney will be filled with mudslinging, but remember, “Every time you spread some dirt you lose a little ground” We need these candidates to give us solid programs and ideas to rebuild the confidence and prosperity that all American citizens deserve. I retired in 2006 but due to the state of our economy I had to return to work to provide for my family. We no longer can say that the streets of America are lined with gold and that opportunities abound. If you asked me 10 years ago would an article like this be written by me, I would’ve said never.. But in conclusion I never thought Americans hopes and dreams would be riding on a ‘A WING AND A PRAYER’

Commentary

Dealers in hope By Cal Thomas

Columnist Leonard Pitts wrote a story for the front page of last Sunday’s Charlotte Observer indicting both parties for failing to speak up for the poor. He inspired this column. I could be writing the expected narrative from a conservative at the Democratic National Convention, but have chosen instead to acknowledge that Pitts, though a lefty, is right. If the Democrats and Republicans aren’t talking about the greater goal of helping the poor become un-poor (rather than just sending them a check to sustain them in their poverty), is anyone doing something to help them? At least one person is — and within sight of the Democratic National Convention Jim Noble is a native North Carolinian and restaurateur. In the business for 30 years, he says his Christian faith led him and his wife to help Charlotte’s growing homeless population — which has increased significantly. According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, in August 2010, homelessness among families increased 21 percent in Charlotte from the year before. Noble owns a for-profit restaurant in

downtown Charlotte, but the one that is making a difference is a non-profit one called The King’s Kitchen (http://www. kingskitchen.org). Standing between a Hooters and a Morton’s steak house, Noble donates profits from The King’s Kitchen to a ministry he and his wife began to help get people off the streets and back on their feet. The place has been operational only since 2010 and Noble emphasizes “it’s not a soup kitchen,” but more like a restoration center with food. He feeds bodies so he can also feed souls. Noble believes that if a homeless person, drug addict or alcoholic is not changed from within and given hope, he or she is unlikely to see their circumstances improve. “We are dealers in hope; we give people hope,” he says. The King’s Kitchen may be unique among restaurants. It earned non-profit status from the IRS because of its focus on job development and training. “We give them a job and they get paid and then we have Bible discipleship and church in the restaurant on Sundays,” Noble explains. “They have to attend and we give them leadership classes and teach social skills and restaurant skills. They go through a one-year program and then they can either get out and get a job, or stay on with us.” Noble says to overcome homelessness and poverty, those he serves must develop a new outlook on themselves

enemy fighter attacking a 97th Bomb Group formation went out of control, probably with a wounded pilot then continued its crashing descent into the rear of the fuselage of a Fortress named All American, piloted by Lt. Kendrick R. Bragg, of the 414th Bomb Squadron. When it struck, the fighter broke apart, but left some pieces in the B-17. The left horizontal stabilizer of the Fortress and left elevator were completely torn away. The two right engines were out and one on the left had a serious oil pump leak. The vertical fin and the rudder had been damaged, the fuselage had been cut almost completely through connected only at two small parts of the frame and the radios, electrical and oxygen systems were damaged. There was also a hole in the top that was over 16 feet long and 4 feet wide at its widest and the

split in the fuselage went all the way to the top gunners turret. Although the tail actually bounced and swayed in the wind and twisted when the plane turned and all the control cables were severed, except one single elevator cable still worked, and the aircraft still flew - miraculously! The tail gunner was trapped because there was no floor connecting the tail to the rest of the plane. The waist and tail gunners used parts of the German fighter and their own parachute harnesses in an attempt to keep the tail from ripping off and the two sides of the fuselage from splitting apart. While the crew was trying to keep the bomber from coming apart, the pilot continued on his bomb run and released his bombs over the target. When the bomb bay doors were opened, the wind turbulence was so great that it blew one of the waist gunners into the broken tail section. It took several minutes and four crew members to pass him ropes from parachutes and haul him back into the forward part of the plane. When they tried to do the same for the tail gunner, the tail began flapping so hard that it began to break off. The weight

of the gunner was adding some stability to the tail section, so he went back to his position. The turn back toward England had to be very slow to keep the tail from twisting off. They actually covered almost 70 miles to make the turn home. The bomber was so badly damaged that it was losing altitude and speed and was soon alone in the sky. For a brief time, two more Me-109 German fighters attacked the All American. Despite the extensive damage, all of the machine gunners were able to respond to these attacks and soon drove off the fighters. The two waist gunners stood up with their heads sticking out through the hole in the top of the fuselage to aim and fire their machine guns. The tail gunner had to shoot in short bursts because the recoil was actually causing the plane to turn. Allied P-51 fighters intercepted the All American as it crossed over the Channel and took one of the pictures shown. They also radioed to the base describing that the empennage was waving like a fish tail and that the plane would not make it and to send out boats to rescue the crew when they bailed out. The fighters stayed with the Fortress taking hand signals from Lt. Bragg and relaying them to the base. Lt. Bragg signaled that 5 parachutes and the spare had been “used” so five of the crew could not bail out. He made the decision that if they could not bail out safely, then he would stay with the plane and land it. Two and a half hours after being hit, the aircraft made its final turn to line up with the runway while it was still over 40 miles away. It descended into an emergency landing and a normal roll-out on its landing gear. When the ambulance pulled alongside, it was waved off because not a single member of the crew had been injured. No one could believe that the aircraft could still fly in such a condition. The Fortress sat placidly until the crew all exited through the door in the fuselage and the tail gunner had climbed down a ladder, at which time the entire rear section of the aircraft collapsed onto the ground. The rugged old bird had done its job. In America We Thank Our Troops Past and Present. ‘A country worth defending is a country worth preserving’ Major General Michael Lehnert USMC Retired

“yesterday’s heroes” YESTERDAY’S HEROES contains all 433 Medal of Honor citations such as this excert: ... Although machinegun bullets kicked up the dirt at his heels, and 88mm shels exploded within 30 yards of him, Pfc. Dutko nevertheless made his way to a point within 30 yards of the first enemy machinegun and killed both gunners with a handgrenade. Although the second machinegun wounded him, knocking him to the ground, Pfc. Dutko regained his feet and advanced on th 88-mm gun, firing his Browning automatic from the hip. When he came within 10 yards of this weapon he killed its 5-man crew with 1 long burst of fire. Wheeling on the machinegun which had wounded him, Pfc. Dutko killed the gunner and his assistant. The third German machine gun fired on Pfc. Dutko from a position 20 yards distant wounding him a second time as he proceeded toward the enemy weapon in a halr run. Along with the citations are Official Communiques from the front, and newspaper accounts of various battles. Yesterday’s Heroes is a dramatic look at the courage of the American soldier in World War II.

Kenneth Jordan is also the author of Heroes of Our Time: 239 Men of the Vietnam War Awarded the Medal of Honor 1964-1972, and Forgotten Heroes: 131 Men of the Korean War Awarded the Medal of Honor 19501953 (both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.

COMMENTARY BY CAL continued from page 5>>> and on life: “If you can change the way a person sees himself, you can change his whole life. If they can just reconnect with the dreams they had when they were young, build their faith and trust God to get out of the ditch, they can transform their lives.” Jesse Spann is a cook at The King’s Kitchen. Spann says he’s been homeless, unemployed and survived at one time by “digging in dumpsters.” Spann is now married with children and his wife is a minister. He says he loves going back into the streets and ministering to the homeless. He can identify. Noble says there are enough churches in Charlotte that if each one helped just one poor or homeless person, the problem would be effectively solved. There are many good works performed by church and independent groups around the country, but The King’s Kitchen shows the power of one couple and the vision they had for caring for what Scripture calls “the least of these.” A footnote: Jim Noble says he is a political conservative, but “socially liberal” in the sense he believes in spreading his own wealth around to help the needy. The difference between his “liberalism” and that of the Democratic National Convention meeting a few blocks away is that he is liberal with the money he makes and he holds accountable those on the receiving end. There is another difference: His program has a far better success rate than the government’s, which does not and cannot change human hearts with the transforming message Noble not only preaches and teaches, but lives. And the Southern-style cooking is excellent.

Judges, Juries, and Executioners Dueling is a large part of American history. Perhaps the most famous one, the Aaron Burr-Alexander Hamilton duel of 1804, resulted in the death of the former Secretary of the Treasury and a murder charge for the sitting Vice President. But the practice would live on for more than half a century after. Perhaps the last significant American duel occurred in 1859, and it set off a domino effect leading to the 1889 arrest of Supreme Court justice — for murder. In 1859, David S. Terry was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California and sought re-election. Hie former friend, United States Senator David C. Broderick — according to Terry, at least — caused him to lose. While both were Democrats, Broderick was an abolitionist while Terry was pro-slavery. Broderick was a vocal critic of the pro-slavery contingent and backed Stephen J. Field (pictured) for the office held by Terry. When Terry lost his re-election bid, he placed the blame on such denunciations from Broderick. On September 8th of that year, Terry challenged Broderick to a duel. Broderick accepted — and lost. Terry was charged with murder but acquitted. (This was the second time he had killed someone — in 1856, Terry stabbed a man but was not tried.) He left the state only to return after the Civil War. In the 1880s, Terry met a woman named Sarah Althea Hill. Hill claimed she was legally married to a millionaire named Williams Sharon and wanted a divorce. Sharon asserted that the two were never married. The only thing the two could agree on that was Hill was free to marry someone else — in this case, David S. Terry. The Terrys sued Sharon, claiming that she was entitled some some percentage of his wealth, and the case ended up being heard by the Federal Circuit Court in California. At the time, Supreme Court Justices presided over circuit court judges in their regions, so the 1888 case of Terry v. Sharon was heard by Stephen J. Field — the same man who “took” Terry’s job thirty years earlier. (Field was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln.) Field ruled against the Terrys, and in doing so, apparently denounced Mrs. Terry. She, in turn, accused Field of taking bribes. Field instructed the marshal to remove her

from the courtroom. The marshal, in turn grabbed Mrs. Terry by the arm. Mr. Terry then punched the marshall for touching his wife and then pulled out a Bowie knife, and a cadre of deputies finally subdued him. Field cited both Terrys for contempt, sentencing her to a month in prison and him to six. The Terrys vowed revenge. A year later, they tried to exact it. At a train station, Mr. Terry came up to Justice Field and attempted to murder him, but both Field and his bodyguard, U.S. Marshal David Neagle, drew their weapons. Neagle shot and killed Terry. Both Neagle and Field were brought up on murder charges for Terry’s death by the state of California, but the charges against Field were dropped almost immediately thereafter. Neagle’s case made it to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1890 (In re Neagle), with the United States arguing that Neagle had acted in accordance with his duties as a U.S. Marshal and was therefore immune from prosecution in this matter. The Supreme Court found in favor of Neagle by a 6-2 vote — Field, the ninth Justice on the Court, recused himself from the proceedings.

Bonus fact: While Terry was quick to anger, the same could probably be said for Field. While serving on the Supreme Court of California, he wore a coat with a special alteration — huge pockets. The pockets were designed so that he could have a pistol in each and shoot his enemies without having to remove his guns.

“Paradise In Brazil” Head back to paradise with another tantalizing collection of images from Brazilian photographer Joaquim Nabuco. In more than 150 color and black and white images, the stunning women of Brazil grace equally beautiful tropical landscapes, including locations with mountains, jungles, beaches, and historical sites. There are even photographs that couple models with Brazil’s indigenous wildlife like jaguars and macaws. By eliciting rich and radiant responses from these “Braziliangels,” Nabuco is able to introduce the diverse characteristics of women from different regions of Brazil. From the mysterious beauties of the south to the spicy women of the north, this collection makes it very clear why Brazil is known as the home of supermodels. Quotes from Brazilian artists and poets about the beauty of their nation’s fairer sex confirm this. But Nabuco’s models come from all walks of life, some are actresses, TV personalities, journalists, biologists, and fashion designers, and all celebrate the paradise that is Brazil. Joaquim Nabuco is a Brazilian photographer who works with top adver-

tising agencies, fashion brands, and record labels in Brazil and abroad. His key purpose in life is to publicize his country’s beauty, which can also be seen in Braziliangels and The Art of Brazilian Architecture. save america

the people’s bill

A reader of ours, Frank Pulley, a retired Sergeant Major from the U.S. Marine Corps had been enjoying the regular opinion pieces by our publisher, Richard Matz, and thus a friendly email dialogue began between the two. Sharing thoughts on the state of affairs in America today, Richard invited Frank to submit editorial for consideration. Here is the first part in a series submited by Frank Pulley on how we could truly save America. It’s a great manifesto and well thought out plan written by a collaboration of various authers. We invite you to read on . . .

July 4, 2012 An open letter to all Americans:

It takes a lot to make me angry. I’m pretty steady, and like a lot of folk, I live my life quietly and within the laws of the land. I pay taxes, work hard, and make sure I cover my bills. I volunteer to help others and I participate in community events. I think I’m like many of our great nation, and we do these things because we’re Americans. This is part of America’s greatness: from the start, our citizens contributed to the common good. They worked hard to earn the dreams this country promised, they learned character from their

family and modeled this character to their children, and they lived within their means. I am proud of this heritage. I love my country. I respect my fellow citizens and I believe we have a shared responsibility to do what we can for each other and our nation. That would be the same “one nation, under God” that our forefathers fought for, an America that was founded on timeless values that included “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” But events and changing processes over the past years have made me angry. Angry and outraged that my once great nation is being run by people who aren’t playing by the same rules I was taught in school, rules citizens

must play by if we are to remain a free and prosperous nation. The Congress can’t pass a budget and has paralyzed forward, positive movement for the country. We are trillions in debt. The union bosses are robbing its members and taxpayers. The five biggest banks and investment houses have become no more than casinos, recklessly endangering the hard-earned money of American citizens and businesses, creating uncertainty and distrust. Too many government contractors and workers have become villains instead of scrupulous stewards, squandering billions of dollars of hard earned taxpayer investment. A pervasive, insidious attitude of entitlement has swept into many corners of our society that is changing the fabric of the values we were founded on. So I’m angry, and I want to do something about it. I cannot stand by and let this country I love be dragged into a global muck. We must right our course so we can remain a great nation, a country the rest of the world

looks to for leadership, security, and peace through strength. We need to save America. That means getting us out of debt, developing and staying within a realistic national budget, and returning to the values and traditions that once made us great. All Americans are stakeholders in our country, and we all will feel the impact of getting America back on track, but the alternative is unthinkable--to die as a nation and forsake a free and prosperous future for U.S. and for our children. America’s founding fathers battled with bullets and blood to make us a free and independent nation. I am asking all American citizens to again do battle to retain our freedom and independence. This time we’ll wage war not with bullets and blood, but by unrelenting pressure on the Congress and the President. This letter is a start, a salvo over the brow to our lawmakers. Consider this a call to arms to save America and all her freedoms. I ask you to join the battle by signing and sending this letter and the framework for “Save America, The People’s Bill” to your family, friends and neighbors, and also to your elected representatives, directing them as the citizens they represent to turn this into a Congressional Bill for immediate passage as “Save America, The People’s Bill” HR2012/S2012. With respect, determination, and a kindred spirit, — A Fellow Patriot

SAVE AMERICA, THE PEOPLE’S BILL

On behalf of the people of the United States of America, I/we offer this simple framework for a Congressional bill. It focuses on how to restore our nation to the fiscal strength we demand and the values and promises on which America was founded. Those values include a government whose primary function is to protect its citizens and not to control them. Since we are a government by and for the people, we will distribute this bill throughout America and ask all Americans to sign on, forward it to our elected representatives, our Congress, and direct them to represent their constituents, finalize and pass this “bill” without embedded or distracting amendments. The Congress must then demand the President sign it. This must be done on or before Labor Day, before it becomes clouded by elections that will draw attention to personalities and political agendas. The debate is not about the candidates, it is much more compelling and dire than that--we need to save our country, and we must take action before it is too late. We need to do this now.

Fiscal Discipline

1. Audit the Federal Government to include the Federal Reserve. Quite simply, our Federal Government has become so excessive and layered that many say it is too big to monitor or

audit. Audit it anyway. Use high level private accounting executives with no connections to government or to members of the FED. Then reduce the Government quickly using recent data. To quote a previous President, “our government’s job is to protect the people, not to control them.” 2. Rid America of debt. Prepare a balance sheet. List all assets (what America owns) and all liabilities (what America owes). List all our income and subtract all our expenses. This is the (people’s) money. We must start with good, accurate numbers. No accounting double talk, no artificial or inflated or deflated data. Set up a plan to dramatically cut spending, cut entitlements, and collect taxes from every citizen. This must be done through a combination of many difficult and unpopular but necessary options. The faster we pay off the debt, the faster we will restore confidence, fiscal sanity, jobs and the American dream for all Americans. 3. Hold Congress responsible and accountable to the American taxpayers. Congress, your fiduciary/financial duty is vital to this country’s survival and defense — if you cannot fulfill this responsibility on time and with a balanced budget, then you must resign. Congress must follow all the laws and rules they place on the people of the United States. 4. Redistribute Union dues. Provide all Federal workers a “choice.” Immediately, stop the mandatory government collection of all union or any

For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

other dues. This amounts to thousands of dollars per worker each year and an expense of millions to taxpayers. All monies now collected for dues will go back into the Federal employees’ paychecks. Federal workers may then choose either to belong to a union and personally pay their union dues, or to use those monies to pay their mortgages, send their children to school, pay down their credit cards, pay off their student loans, save or invest for their retirement, start a business, or to save for their future. That would bring millions, if not billions of dollars back into the economy versus paying union bosses for political slush and mismanagement. This would improve our economy from day one. America is about freedom and control of our own paychecks. 5. Re-calculate and re-align government pensions. Neither do we know that there are funds to pay for promised pensions, nor do we base pensions on realistic metrics. We need an immediate and full accounting of any and all government pensions paid to federal, state, city or county workers. All pensions affect our country’s financial stability, now and in the future. It has been reported that the union bosses and politicians in years past have obligated the taxpayers of America to pay for these unfunded pensions, estimated in the trillions of dollars, when most Americans working in private businesses have no pensions or retirement savings of their own. Unfunded pensions that promise

people unrealistic guaranteed pensions for life are bankrupting America. This must change now and forever. We must have an accurate accounting now. Then, using whatever funds are on account and with reputable actuarial guidance, develop or update legitimate, unbiased models, adjusting the parameters to account for longer life spans, years of vesting, and increasing the age at which senior workers retire, until the debt crisis is ended. Younger government workers shall save or invest for their own retirement. We must restore fiscal sanity, choice, personal responsibility and competition to save America now. 6. Tax reform. Immediately institute a flat tax so every American citizen pays taxes. This is a part of citizenship, to pay taxes for the common welfare of America. We must instill that civic responsibility into every American. A flat tax is simple and, if consistently applied, is fair. No picking winners and losers. The rate would be enough to enable our Federal Government to defend the country and to create a level playing field for business and financial institutions. All payroll taxes would end. All personal loopholes would end, with the exception of one mortgage — your home — and contributions to vetted charities not engaged in politics or doing harm to America. Business loopholes would end. Only standard business expenses would be deductible (salaries, rent, equipment, etc.). To be continued next issue.

In June, Construction Mechanic First Class Ronald White was aboard the USS Pelileu in the ship’s galley eating dinner when he noticed a Staff Sergeant at his table was showing signs of choking. White asked him if he was okay and the gentlemen responded, “I am ok.” White continued to monitor the situation and within a couple minutes the gentleman was unable to cough and gave the international sign of choking with both hands across his neck. White quickly sprang into action using the Heimlich maneuver to assist the Staff Sergeant and was able to successfully dislodge the obstruction.

Chappy’s on Eagle’s Wings

Here today, Gone tomorow Have you ever wondered, as I have, what things will really matter or be of consequence, when this life has finally come to an end? Will the outwardly visible things we’ve done tip the scales in our favor, or will it be the thoughts and intentions of our hearts? Or, will it be some combination of these? When it’s all said and done, and we look back upon it all, what will really matter to us and to God? Think about the worldly standards of success we have all around us. Consider the man who rises through the ranks to be CEO of a major corporation, or his friend who worked hard to become an all-star quarterback or highranking military officer. How about the woman who has devoted her life to raising a good family, or her sister who has become an outstanding cardiologist or Senator? When we watch the Olympic games this coming month, we are inspired by the persistent hard work and determination of these athletes, who set new world’s records, and wish we could be in their shoes as they win those gold medals. Yet the time inevitably comes, when the games are over, the spectators go home and new Olympic hopefuls train to take their places in the near future. Similarly, the CEOs, quarterbacks, mili-

tary officers, doctors and senators will retire and others will take their place; even moms will find their nests finally empty, in spite of wondering if such a day would ever come! Then what? I read a quote once by a former state Supreme Court justice, Dallin H. Oaks, who stated, “The Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts – what we have done. It is an acknowledgement of the final effect of our acts and thoughts – what we have become. The commandments… are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account.” He went on to say that he believes the point of it all is to become what God desires us to become. There is an old poem that expands on this thought. It is called, “It Shows in Your Face”. “You don’t have to tell how you live each day; You don’t have to say if you work or you play; A tried, true barometer serves in the place, However you live, it will show in your face. The false, the deceit that you bear in your heart, Will not stay inside where it first got its start; For sinew and blood are a thin veil of lace,

By Chaplain Ringo, www.yourchappy.com What you wear in your heart, you wear in your face. If your life is unselfish, i f for others you live Not for what you can get, but how much you can give, If you live close to the Lord in His infinite grace, You don’t have to tell it, it shows in your face.” While we may admire and envy the Olympians and others who achieve such extraordinary successes, the fact is that most of us are not going to be on the cover of any magazine. It is seldom that those who go about quietly serving and blessing others, or who faithfully do their job day after day, or persevere in a difficult marriage, are seen on the 6:00 news or are heralded for their efforts. But, what of their accomplishments? Will they all be forgotten, or are they seen and remembered by someone who will one day stand before us when we account for our lives here? If Justice Oaks is right, that God will be more interested in what we’ve become, then the question is, “What does God desire you to become?” Something or someone you have no interest in being? I don’t think so. An elderly member of a family, who has shunned organized religion throughout his life, mentioned a dream he had some years ago. He said, “In my dream, I was sitting in a church with all of you, and I was wearing the most god-awful, itchy suit imaginable. All I could think of was being able to go home and get out of that itchy suit!” It made him itch all over just to remember that vivid dream as he retold it to us. Yet, the dream candidly expressed his fears where God is concerned. I think too many people similarly assume that God desires for them to live out their lives in some itchy suit that they don’t want to be wearing in the first place. However, I have found God to be a loving father, who recognizes and respects the intrinsic differences in each of His children, and loves those differences. I don’t think he is looking for mass conformity. I think He desires for us to be the happy, healthy, joyful people we are capable of being. I doubt we could picture or desire anything better for ourselves, than He already has in mind. I don’t know about you, but I would not want the flowers in my garden to all be the same, or look the same. Some are more fragile than others and require special care; some are hardier and can

make it through a cold winter, untended. That’s okay. Each one is a work of art. Each one is exquisite and unique in its own way, much like our children. It’s hard to imagine that God could possibly have less love or desires for us, than we have for our own children. Probably the biggest desire I have for my children on any given day, is for them to be kind to anyone and everyone who comes in contact with them. You may have heard the saying, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” If any of my kids became famous, I’d be proud of them, but less so if they weren’t also good to other people. I have a strong hunch God feels the same. As I have people come to me for counseling, with their hearts broken over things said and done to them, I feel badly that they have been denied the basic kindness, consideration and compassion they deserve. Such experiences often cause them to doubt their own value or worth as a person. For any of you who may feel the same, I hope you will remember that you were God’s child first, before you were anyone’s wife, husband, parent or child. That is your first identity, your ongoing identity, and the one that will still be left standing when this life is all done. If you must walk away from any situation, you don’t walk away as a “no one”, you walk away as a beloved child of God. Although we cannot control the way others may treat us, we still can control how we treat others and how we choose to live. I feel we all want a life that really matters, one that is full of purpose and hope. If this is what we concentrate our thoughts and actions upon, this is what we will achieve. We have all known or heard of people whose love and goodness continued to be remembered long after they died, living on in the hearts and memories of people for generations. Each of us has the power to be such a person. Go and become your best self. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy…(Isaiah 40:31)

Fleet Week San Diego 2012 donates proceeds in excess of operating expenses from Fleet Week San Diego to charities that provide critical support to military families.

Fleet Week Today

Overview

History

Fleet Week San Diego honors and celebrates the men and women of the military through public events that entertain and alliances that thank and support these heroes.

Fleet Week San Diego was created by community and business leaders who understood the great depth of public support for our Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. This group sought to provide a means for San Diego to express its support in a way that would establish San Diego as a patriotic, pro-military city. They shared a vision to recognize the contributions made by the naval services to the many communities of the greater San Diego region.

Mission The mission of Fleet Week San Diego is to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military through public events that entertain and alliances that support and thank these heroes.

In 1997, after extensive planning and team building, Fleet Week San Diego was born. Nurtured by the Chamber of Commerce, the annual series of events grew quickly into a recognized feature of the region’s annual calendar. By 2001, Fleet Week San Diego had outgrown its home in the Chamber and was incorporated as The San Diego Fleet Week Foundation, a California Public Benefit Corporation and non-profit under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. As a Public Benefit Corporation, the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation

Open to the public, Fleet Week San Diego allows locals and visitors to celebrate the spirit and achievements of Sailors, Marines, and Coastguardsmen, whose costs for events are underwritten. In addition to honoring the military services through the annual Fleet Week San Diego events, the foundation’s goals are to foster awareness of the contributions made by enlisted military personnel and their families; to enhance relationships between the civilian, business and military communities; to provide events that military personnel and their families can attend at little or no cost; and to raise funds for charitable efforts benefiting enlisted service members and their families. Fleet Week San Diego proceeds benefit, among other organizations. As the nation’s largest and most prominent salute to the military, Fleet Week San Diego has expanded from just a few events to more than 20 major attractions and four flagship events – Coronado Speed Festival, Miramar Air Show, Sea and Air Parade, and Football Classic. To accommodate all of these events, Fleet Week San Diego has long outgrown the week-long format and now proudly honors themilitary throughout the year. Fleet Week San Diego 2012 is September 8 – October 14. Join us in thanking our Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen for their services to our country by participating in 2012 Fleet Week San Diego events.

Interview

Ali Liebert talks about her role as a bomb girl By Jeri Jacquin / Movie Maven Getting ready to fire up their second season beginning September 11, 2012 at 10 p.m. (ET), BOMB GIRLS has become a great addition to the REELZ . BOMB GIRLS is a series about women who are working in a Canadian ammunition factory in 1941. This

is truly a time when the role of women as the world knew it was about to change forever. As the world seems to have gone mad with war and the social norms begin to wash away, the women of BOMB GIRLS begin to see the possibilities of their lives. The series tells the stories of Golden Globe winner Meg Tilly (Agnes of God) as the matron of the factory,

16 September 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

Lorna. She watches the girls and fights to keep the norms that are slipping from her grasp. Lorna also monitors the “Blue Shift” of girls including – socialite turned crusader Gladys Witham played by Jodi Balfour, preachers daughter run away Kate played by Charlotte Hegele, glam girl Vera played by Anastasia Phillips and finally the tough as nails, no-nonsense poster girl Betty played by Ali Liebert. But even with the female dominated factory, the men aren’t about to give away the power quite so easily. Factory manager Harold, played by Richard Fitzpatrick, tries to keep everything in line and the mysteriously handsome Marco, played by Antonio Cupo, makes a few ladies hearts skip a beat. I was thrilled to have the chance to speak with Ali Liebert who plays Betty in BOMB GIRLS and get her perspective on portraying a time in history that changed women and what it’s like creating a show with such a buzz! Hello Ali, thanks for talking with me today! Absolutely, thank you for wanting to. I have to tell you Ali, I saw the first four episodes and I was so bummed when it was over! There are six in the first season and we are doing twelve more now. That’s been the general consensus that people want to see more so that’s pretty positive. It’s really interesting because you watch the first episode and before you know it you are hooked. It’s the sneaky hook! It definitely focused on the lives of these women. I think the relationships make the show interesting. When they came to you with the idea what did you think when you read the script? I had a friend who told me that I would be good as Betty and I read the script and almost cried. I was a huge fan of the concept and idea, and the story Michael MacLennan and Adrienne Mitchell had created. As an actress Betty is just so fascinating to play as this type of layered character. Do you have your own back-story to the character because you never know how Betty is going to react to any given situation? You think you know somebody and they surprise you all the time. There are so many secrets on the show and characters reasons for hiding things. There were definitely some people that I drew on for inspiration for the role but I share a lot of the same characteristics as Betty so it’s a combination of my imagination and similarities within myself. How did you feel the first time you put on the costume? Oh my gosh, it was the best! Joanne Hansen, who is our costume designer, nailed it and she nailed Betty. I have a lot of the Facebook and Twitter fans of the show who always make comments on Betty’s ‘lady pants’ because I’m always wearing these incredible green pants. It wasn’t uncommon for women to wear pants in their new factory role outside the home. Betty definitely wears pants more than the other

characters. But you look awesome in them! Oh thanks. The first wardrobe fitting was a big exhale and felt incredible. That’s what so fun about being on the show. Rather than being a modern show, it’s a period piece and I like dressing up. In the cast you have Meg Tilly playing a powerful role. How is that? She is the warmest and kindest woman you’ll ever meet. Sometimes you have to shake your head and forget her list of accomplishments and who she is. I am in awe of Meg and Betty is with Lorna so I use what I feel in my own life. I think it would be Betty’s dream to keep going and keep working in the factory. The war has given her great opportunities. You see Betty as the one that stands up for herself a little more than others. How hard was it to go from that to being the cute poster girl for the war? You seem so uncomfortable and it came across. I loved that episode (Bringing Up Bombshell). That’s one of the main advantages of working on BOMB GIRLS, they create such fascinating storylines. The different scenarios the girls find themselves in were so true. This stuff was really happening and that one was a lot of fun. In my real life I would say I’m more of the glamour type and when I got the role of Betty they dyed and cut my hair. My inner diva liked episode four so I could get all dolled up but then again, Betty hates this! I knew we were hooked when we were hollering at the screen not to change Betty! I love that!

News IGUANA ... ANYONE, continued from page 3>>> find have a certain, let’s say, fondness for the camera. Check out this mess: The South Florida preppers, on the other hand, are a low-key group that meets for coffee and doughnuts occasionally; shares tips on survival medicine, body armor, and bug-out bags; and generally keeps to itself. But National Geographic producer Chris Stone reached out to Petrovich to film a segment based on his urbanprepper lifestyle in Hollywood. During the negotiations, the producers asked Petrovich for access to his secret storage location — which would be not very secret anymore — as well as permission to talk with his family and girlfriend. Then Petrovich mentioned offhand that a rebounding local population of iguanas could provide food in a collapse. “They’re tastiest between two and three feet. Really three feet is the best,” he explains. Soon the producers were asking if he could stalk and catch an iguana on camera. “I know a couple of the canals where they hang out and sun themselves,” says Petrovich. But he wasn’t sure he’d be able to catch one. No problem, the producers said. They’d bring one along and stage the hunt. Would he be willing to grill and eat it?

Here’s the response Petrovich sent to Stone:

I will not kill an animal if I don’t need to kill it... certainly not for a conservation minded network like National Geographic (that would be bad press), and certainly not for food when I don’t need to. That is probably why your show doesn’t play well with most preppers I have met (in the hundreds). (I have a degree in Psychology and Marketing, so I know a little about these things). Preppers are seriously conservation minded, and it won’t fly. It is like me chopping down a good fruit tree for fire wood. How stupid is that?. I can catch a couple of the little guys and say, “If I let these little guys go now, then each one will have five offspring, and each of their five offspring, and so on. So if in the future I should even need the food, I will have 100 iguanas, instead of NONE because I didn’t needlessly killed one now... (me looking at the little lizard), go on little guy, and I hope we never have the need to put you in a pot, ohhh, the neighbor three doors down has a lot of nice flowering plants. Bye little fella.” That was the beginning of the end. They also wanted him to take a machine gun out to the firing range and

blast away at nothing. When the producers kept asking for access to Petrovich’s camera-shy family, he backed out of the show. Plus, he says, the National Geographic Channel is a little bit left-wing for his tastes — and by appearing on the show, he’d lose credibility as a leader in the prepper community. “Any prepper who’s going to look at this is going to look at me as an [expletive],” he says. When he sent out an email to the local Meetup group ask-

ing if anyone else wanted to appear, he says, he got zero “yes” and about 20 “hell no” replies. The media attention from the TV show was the first thing people mentioned when they were hesitant about our story earlier this year. Nat Geo may work for some camera-friendly preppers, but Florida’s local folks want to keep their prepping under wraps. After all, when the collapse happens, they don’t want you to know where to find their supplies.

Crime Feature in 1932 and sentenced him to 11 years in prison.

7. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera In the early part of the 20th Century, gangsters made a lot of money selling liquor during Prohibition. In the ’70s many gangsters made a killing off heroin. Nowadays, the richest gangsters make their money from importing cocaine from Colombia through Mexico and into the U.S. While it is hard to determine the exact wealth of these masterminds, here are the 10 richest gangsters of all time: net worth of over $52 million on top of a large supply of liquid assets, namely heroin.

9. Griselda Blanco

10. Frank Lucas

Frank Lucas capitalized off the heroin trade in the 1960s and 1970s by using an East Asian connection during the Vietnam war, cutting off the Italian mafia who controlled the trade in his Harlem at the time. Lucas, originally from North Carolina, employed members of his family to take over the heroin trade in New York and New Jersey. Lucas would claim to have sold one million dollars worth of heroin a day in his prime and claimed to have a

Griselda Blanco, also known as the Black Widow or the Cocaine Queen of Miami, was a drug lord for the Colombian Medellin cartel. She controlled the cocaine trade through violence and intimidation making $80 million a month during the ’70s and ’80s. Reports claim that at her peak Griselda Blanco had more than a half a billion dollars. After serving 10 years in jail on drug charges, Blanco would return to her native Colombia.

“El Chapo” is one of Mexico’s most infamous drug lords. He is the head of the Sinaloa cartel which smuggles in billion of dollars from Colombia through Mexico and into the United States. Guzman became rich enough to make Forbes list of 1000 wealthiest people in the world as well as their top 60 most powerful people in the world, with a net worth of over 5 billion dollars. Guzman was jailed in 1993 but escaped from prison in 2001 and is currently number one of the FBI’s most wanted list with $5 million award for his capture.

8. Al Capone

Al Capone is perhaps the most notorious gangster of all time, and also one of the richest. During prohibition, Capone controlled the illegal alcohol, prostitution and gambling rackets in Chicago which brought in $100 million a year at its prime. Capone’s money allowed him to bribe police officials, judges and even the Mayor of Chicago. Unfortunately, he could not bribe the IRS who convicted him of tax evasion

6. Anthony “Fat Tony” Salermo

Italian Mobster “Fat Tony” Salermo made his millions running the numbers and drugs racket in East Harlem after most other Italian mobsters left the area as it became more Black and Latino in the 1960s making tens of millions of dollars. As the front man for the Genovese crime family, Salermo was named the America’s Top Gangster by Fortune Magazine in 1986 due to his wealth of more than one billion dollars and influence. In 1988 Salermo was convicted of racketeering charges and was sentenced to 70 years in prison.

5. Carlos Lehder

18 September 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

Lehder was one of the founders of the Colombian Medillin Cartel. While in prison Lehder met Boston-born drug trafficker, George Jung, who helped him import and distribute cocaine from his native Colombia into the United States accumulating $2.7 billion. Cocaine made Lehder so rich that he owned his own island in the Bahamas and offered to pay of

today. It has been reported that Kennedy contacted mobster Frank Costello, who was known to brag that he was a bootlegger with Kennedy, to use another mobster, Chicago’s Sam Giancana to help his son John get elected through his ties to Chicago and the unions.

2. Pablo Escobar 3. Joseph Kennedy 4. Meyer Lansky

Lansky was a Jewish immigrant from Poland who would make a fortune of gambling, both legal and illegal. Lansky would join notorious gangsters, Charles “Lucky” Luciano and Ben “Bugsy” Siegel to run a gang that would be known as Murder Inc. Lansky would later turn to focus on gambling setting up operations in Florida, Las Vegas and Cuba before the Cuban revolution. In 1982, Forbes would name him as one of the 400 richest people in America. Lansky would be indicted for tax evasion and fled to Israel. He would later return to the U.S. to face charges and was acquitted in 1974. Lanksy would die a free man in Miami at age 83.

Joseph Kennedy is the patriarch of one of America’s most powerful and prestigious families. One of his sons became President, another District Attorney and presidential candidate and another a Senator. At his peak Kennedy was one of the richest men in America but as the saying goes behind every great fortune, there is a great crime. Kennedy was already in the liquor business before Prohibition but according to several books and gangsters, became a bootlegger with ties to the New York and Chicago underworlds after liquor was made illegal. After Prohibition was ended Kennedy made a fortune off selling legitimate liquor, as well as through Hollywood and the stock market. Kennedy was named one of the 20 richest people in America in 1954 by Fortune Magazine and had a net worth of more than $300 million, which would be in the high billions

Escobar is perhaps the most notorious drug lord of the modern era. He ran the Medellin Cartel which imported billions of dollars of cocaine into the United States. Pablo’s money brought him great power as we was able to bribe officials or have them killed if they wouldn’t take his bribes. Forbes Magazine named Escobar the 7th

richest man in the world with a net worth of $25 billion. In 1993, Escobar was killed by Colombian forces with U.S. assistance, after he escaped from a Colombian prison.

And the winner is... 1. Amado Carrillo Fuentes

Amado Carrillo Fuentes was the head of the Mexican Juarez Cartel. He was known as “Lord of The Skies” due to his private fleet of planes, including 22 private 727 jet airliners which were used to import cocaine from Colombia to Mexico where it was later smuggled into the United States. Fuentes had an estimated net value of $25 billion, almost twice as much as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and the DEA called him the most powerful drug trafficker of his era. He would die while undergoing plastic surgery to alter his appearance in 1997.

Sports Interview

Art Garcia chats with

Jarret Johnson & Le’ron McClain

When the free agency period started last March, GM A.J. Smith wasted little time going after a couple of free agents who are expected to play a major role in helping the Chargers return to the playoffs. Both outside linebacker Jarret Johnson (Ravens) and fullback Le’Ron McClain (Ravens/

Chiefs) have established themselves as two of the of the top players at their respective positions in the NFL. As the preseason games came to a close, MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. spoke to both players about joining the Chargers and how they will fit in with their new team.

AG: What are your thoughts on coming to play for the Chargers and did you have offers from other teams? JJ: I’m excited – it’s a great city and a good football team with a ton of upside so I’m real glad to be playing here. I did (have other offers), but none of them were as enthusiastic as they were here in San Diego and anytime a team is excited about having you … I mean one day none of us are going to be wanted by any team, so to be wanted this much by this team was pretty encouraging and I was real excited about coming out here. LM: My agent called me and said there are three teams interested in

signing you and when he mentioned San Diego first, I said ‘that’s all I want to hear – do whatever you can to get me out here’ and he did… (I feel) it was a blessed deal. AG:The Ravens have been a top team over the past few years and were one game away from the Super Bowl last year, what was it about the Chargers that made you sign here? JJ: Well there are a lot of similarities – you have a lot of good players, a great coaching staff and an organization that’s dedicated to winning. This team has just had some issues with injuries and some other things that have kept them from accomplishing their

Sports Interview ultimate goal. LM: The talent level out here – you have Philip Rivers at the throne, throwing the ball; you have leaders like Antonio Gates and Nick Hardwick on the offensive side. I just think it’s a great opportunity for me to come out here and show my talents not just as a blocker but everything, so I’m going to take advantage of that. AG: Le’Ron, when you were signed, former Chargers fullback Lorenzo Neal couldn’t say enough good things about what you were going to do for this team — what did you learn from him in Baltimore? LM: Pretty much everything. As a rookie I came in out of college and I thought I did a good job (as a rookie) and in my second year they brought in Lo Neal and the stuff that he taught me, I felt like I really didn’t do nothing. He taught me stuff from the fullback position and the halfback position when I was over there and who doesn’t want to learn from the greatest blocker in the NFL at fullback? It was a great opportunity for me so I was in his back pocket everyday trying to learn everything I can to try to help me play 16-17 years in the league. AG: Jarret, coming over from such a dominant defensive team and being an accomplished veteran, do you see yourself as a leader where you’ll be real vocal on the field or do you lead more by example? JJ: Well what’s good about this team

is there’s a great mixture of young talent and older veteran leadership. So I would say I fall under the veteran leadership (category), but you have to have those guys just as well as the younger legs out there running around – I think it’s a good mixture of the two on this team. AG:With that being said, how do you fit in with this team – what are the talents that you bring to the team? JJ: I think my game experience. I’ve been in a lot of games, a lot of playoff games and been in a lot of wars… I bring physicality to the team; I’ve played in a lot of different defenses. We ran multiple schemes in Baltimore just like they do here – so I would say my versatility as well as my run-stop abilities is what I bring to this team. AG:Le’Ron, Jarret mentioned earlier that there are similarities between this team and the Ravens, what similarities, if any, do you see? LM: Just the physicality of it; the talent level out there; the work ethic that we put forth out there every day is right up there with everybody – with the Ravens and with the Patriots and all that. I feel like we’re doing a great job out here, Norv Turner is doing an awesome job with us getting our minds ready each and every day – not looking ahead of time towards the playoffs or the Super Bowl or anything like that. We’re looking forward to the next practice, and that’s tomorrow morning. That’s the thing we focus on – one

day at a time and let everything thing else fall as it may. The Endzone: When the Chargers signed former Jets safety Donald Strickland in 2010, he said the Jets felt the Chargers were a ‘soft team’ and they weren’t concerned about coming to San Diego to face them in the playoffs. When I asked McClain if the Ravens felt the Chargers were soft as well, he replied: “I really didn’t know about that. We played them a couple of times when I was with the Ravens and I thought it was a great team with those linebacker’s – Shawne Merriman, (Stephen) Cooper and guys

like that and they were pretty physical to me when I came down here. So I thought they were pretty locked in, I wouldn’t call them soft at all.”

Heard the one about the . . .

A little girl was out with her Grandmother when they came across a couple of dogs mating on the sidewalk. “What are they doing, Grandma?” asked the little girl. The grandmother was embarrassed, so she said, “The dog on top has hurt his paw, and the one underneath is carrying him to the doctor.” “They’re just like people, aren’t they Grandma?” said the little one. “How do you mean?” asked the Grandma. “Offer someone a helping hand,” said the little girl, “and they screw you every time!” *** A man is waiting for wife to give birth. The doctor comes in and informs the dad that his son was born without torso, arms or legs. The son is just a head! But the father loves his son and raises him as well as he can, with love

and compassion. After 21 years, the son is old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar and tearfully tells the son he is proud of him. Dad orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the boy takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoooop! A torso pops out! The bar is dead silent; then bursts into a whoop of joy. The father, shocked, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant “Take another drink!” The bartender still shakes his head in dismay. Swoooop! Two arms pops out. The bar goes wild, but the bartender is clearly disapproving. The father, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant “Take another drink!” The bartender ignores the whole affair. By now the boy is getting tipsy, and with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it. Swoooop! Two legs pop out. The bar is in chaos. The father falls to his knees and tearfully thanks God. The boy stands up on his new legs

and stumbles to the left... then to the right... right through the front door, into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly. The bar falls silent. The father moans in grief. The bartender sighs and says, “That boy should have quit while he was a head.” *** A doctor walked into a bank. Preparing to endorse a check, he pulled a rectal thermometer out of his shirt pocket and tried to write with it. Realizing his mistake, he looked at the thermometer with annoyance and said, “Well that’s great, just great... some a**hole’s got my pen.” *** The man came home drunk at four in the morning, and his wife was all over him, yelling at him, crying because she thought he was with another woman.

“No, honey, I swear, I was at this bar, and it was so fancy that even the urinals were made of gold.” She said she didn’t believe him so she called the bar. “Hello,” she said, “I just want to ask one question. My husband claims to have spent the night at your bar and I have one question; are your urinals covered in gold?” To which she heard the bartender say, “Hey, Clarence, I think we found the guy who pissed in your saxophone.”

time travel

interview with Dr. Edward Farhi on the film ‘looper’

By Jeri Jacquin Movie Maven In theatres September 28, 2012, is a film that moves forward only to fall back in time with Bruce Willis and JosephGordon Levitt in LOOPER. The year is 2072 and the mob had control in an unusual way. To make someone disappear, they are kidnapped and sent back in time where a hit man waits. Now, someone wants to “close the loop” and a man must come face to face with himself to change everything. Time travel is the subject of so many books, articles, study and film. There is only one way to find out the truth about time travel! Dr. Edward Farhi is a physicist at MIT who knows a thing or two about theoretical particle

physics, astrophysics, general relativity and quantum mechanics and even spent time at CERN. Now, as scary as all that sounds what I found is that Dr. Farhi has a great sense of humor and a way of explaining the answer to the question we all want to know – is time travel possible? Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today. Absolutely. So let’s talk about time travel. I’ve read your research interests and I enjoyed reading it. You worked at CERN? Yes, that was exciting and I was there for two years. That’s impressive! So you are the man to ask, what is your theory about time travel? Is it or is it not possible? Let’s chat about that. In 1905 Einstein proposed the special theory of relativity and he said that the rate at which clocks run can depend on the speed of the observer or the speed of the system. When he was talking about the rate at which clocks run, he was actually talking about the actual flow of time. Not just how it feels but the actually flow of time. The affect that

is most dramatic is when you move close to the speed of light. The speed of light is moving 186,000 miles a second so it’s very, very fast. If you send a light beam to the moon in a second and a half because obviously light travels much faster than rockets. Astronauts aren’t going the speed of light. There is a tiny effect if you go much less than the speed of light but it gets traumatic if you go closer to the speed of light and its traumatic enough that if I put you on a rocket and send you closer to the speed of light – you would come back to earth and you might say three months have passed but we on earth would say 100 years have passed. What? Whoa! That would mean that you skipped into the future and if you have kids they would be gone and there children would be gone and maybe you’d meet your great-grandchildren who would be around. That would be okay by the law of physics skipping into the future.

So, for example at CERN, where particles are brought close to the speed of light, and they take into account the fact that the clocks carried by those little particles are running at a different rate or CERN wouldn’t work. You know what GPS satellites are? Yes, I can’t get across town without it now. When you are in your car and want to locate or get your bearings you triangulate with a satellite. It finds your position but in order to do that it’s very important that when the signal goes to the satellite, it has a clock on it that marks the signal and its important that the clocks on the satellite match the ones on earth. If they didn’t take into account the fact that the clock is moving because it’s in orbit, then the GPS system wouldn’t work properly – you’d be driving off the road. This is something extremely good to know! Absolutely, these effects are real. They affect your whole life and don’t even know it. It allows you to skip into the future. There is another way you can skip into the future and that’s by going into a strong gravitational field. In 1917 Einstein proposed a general theory of relativity and that says that objects that are put into strong gravitational fields that clocks can run at

Will Kobe Remind Dwight of This? Although you don’t hear too much in the way of locker room hazing these days, you certainly hear of a good bit of showmanship or ‘one upping’ your teammates. It’s a guy thing. It’s often an ego thing. If the multiple NBA Championships weren’t enough for Kobe Bryant to win the verbal battles, I’m pretty sure this image might make it’s way to Kobe’s iPhone as a background image…..

Chargers beat Oakland Raiders 22-14 . . . But? By The Associated Press OAKLAND - Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers capitalized on their opponent’s mistakes instead of making errors of their own. Rivers threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd and Nate Kaeding kicked five field goals to spoil Dennis Allen’s debut as Oakland coach by beating the Raiders 22-14 on Monday night. The Raiders were looking to start a new era on a positive note but were done in by an offense that couldn’t score a touchdown until the final minute and three botched punts after an injury to Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Condo. The Chargers did enough to win on a night they started undrafted rookie Mike Harris at left tackle and were missing starting running back Ryan Mathews and receiver Vincent Brown to injuries. San Diego protected Harris by throwing short often with 16 of Rivers’ 24 completions going to running backs and tight ends. Rivers threw for 231 yards, but was sacked just once and did not turn the ball over after having 20 interceptions a year ago. Oakland had its own problems with injuries. The absence of deep-threat receivers Denarius Moore (hamstring) and Jacoby Ford (left foot) left Carson Palmer mostly throwing underneath to Darren McFadden, who caught a career-high 13 passes. A head injury to Condo in the second quarter proved to be even more significant when backup long snapper Travis Goethel had to fill in. Early in the third quarter, the Raiders lined up to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the San Diego48. But after a penalty for 12 men in the huddle, Oakland decided to punt. Goethel’s snap rolled back to Lechler, who was tackled for a loss, giving San Diego the ball at the Raiders 39. That set up a 28-yard field goal by Kaeding. After Oakland was stopped on its next drive, Lechler set up closer to Goethel, whose snap made it back in the air. But Dante Rosario broke through for the first block against Lechler since 2006 - a year before Condo joined the team. The Chargers once again had to settle for a short field goal and led 16-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Goethel rolled another snap back early in the fourth quarter, once again giving San Diego the ball in Oakland territory, setting up Kaeding’s careerhigh tying fifth field goal to make it 22-6. Palmer finally got Oakland into the end zone with 54 seconds left on a 2-yard pass to rookie Rod Streater and the two connected for a 2-point conversion to make it 22-14. But San Diego recovered the onside kick and iced the game. Palmer went 32 for 46 for 297 yards. The Raiders had little trouble mov-

ing the ball in the first half but could not get into the end zone and trailed 10-6 at the break. Oakland gained 204 yards but settled for field goals of 51 and 19 yards by Sebastian Janikowski. Another prime scoring drive ended when Streater fumbled at the San Diego 29. The Chargers used two long passes by Rivers and penalties by Oakland on their two scoring drives. Robert Meacham beat Ron Bartell on a 46yard deep ball to set up Kaeding’s 23yard field goal in the first quarter. Rivers hit Floyd on a 23-yarder on a drive that was extended by three Oakland

penalties that have San Diego a first down, including two offside penalties by Tommy Kelly on third down. Rivers capped the drive by escaping pressure and finding an open Floyd for a 6-yard score. The problem with the win is 6

TRIPS to the red zone and Only ONE TOUCHDOWN! The Raiders set an NFL record with 163 penalties last season, giving opponents 58 first downs by penalties.

Chevy Volts a Loser for GM? By Justin Hyde

A new report by Reuters finds that General Motors may have lost $49,000 on every Chevrolet Volt sold to date, thanks to the collision of high sticker prices and unrealistic expectations of demand for plug-in hybrids. The story touched off another wave of tut-tuting over the GM bailout — and a stronger reply from GM this morning calling the story “grossly wrong.” The truth: What matters more isn’t how much GM might have lost on the Volt so far, but when it will be profitable — if ever. No car has ever been stuck in the kind of political miasma that surrounds the Chevy Volt, which has turned into the rolling representation of the Obama Administration’s $50 billion rescue of GM. With that bailout now firmly at the heart of a presidential campaign following the Democratic National Convention and the bumper-sticker slogan of Vice President Joe Biden that “Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive,” that cloud has spread to cover even routine business choices at GM. Last week, a few critics questioned whether GM had political motives for scheduling its third-quarter earnings release on Oct. 31 — the same week as Ford and Chrysler. Based on interviews with industry experts, Reuters estimated it costs GM between $75,000 and $88,000 today to build each Volt. Most of that — $56,000 — comes from the cost to develop the Volt’s unique power system, a combination of gas engine, electric motors, massive lithium-ion battery pack and a complicated transmission, all powered by custom GM software that controls how the car starts, stops and recharges. The rest of the cost comes from the raw material, labor costs and other overhead. “Reuters’ numbers become more wrong with each Volt sold” says GM

While GM had expected to sell 60,000 Volts a year by now, it’s only moved 21,000 over the past two years. After Reuters posted the story last night, GM responded forcefully this morning, calling the piece “grossly wrong,” and that the calculations “become more wrong with each Volt sold.” The reason: Automakers don’t account for product development costs per unit sold, but over several years of expected production. And GM has a point (one that Reuters acknowledges in its piece). By using Reuters’ math, the first few vehicles of any new or updated model would also be sold at a massive loss, including the Toyota Prius and any other plug-in hybrid on the market. Exhibit A would be the Tesla Model S, developed using $465 million in federal loans and a $226 million IPO. Tesla has delivered fewer than 100 cars so far; by the same formula applied to the Volt, each of those cars could be considered to have lost $6 million apiece. Yet Tesla expects to turn cash-flow positive by the fourth quarter of this year and has a target of a 25 percent profit margin on every Model S sold, because the same technology and factory is expected to build thousands of cars in several different models. The GM executives who conceived the Volt as a leap-frog over the Prius — well before the Obama administration even took office — always thought of it as a marketing tool as much as a regular car, and justified the additional costs as a way to burnish GM’s image. The Volt works as advertised; some owners have reported driving 1,000 miles using only home charging between fill-ups, and the car most traded in for a Volt has been a Toyota Prius. But GM’s known plans for the technology beyond the Volt runs to a low-volume coupe edition for Cadillac launching next year; without a higher-volume application, the financial break-even point won’t arrive for several years, if ever. If GM wants to escape its political smog, it has to show the Volt represents the best use of the taxpayer’s money that saved the company — and not a lingering reminder of how the old GM went broke in the first place

car collector corner 1954 ford skyliner beauty

Q: Greg, I own a 1954 Ford Skyliner and enjoyed your column very much. I have read somewhere that Ford tested two Skyliners in ‘54, one with the Plexiglas top and one with a steel top in Arizona with all the windows up. The result was the Skyliner only got 5 to 7 degrees hotter than the steel roof. My ’54 Skyliner I’ve had for about nine years. I call it the great-great-grandfather of all the sunroof and moonroof cars we have today. It’s very popular everywhere I take it as there aren’t many 1954 Skyliners left. My car has a 1955 engine, but is otherwise original. The original 239 horsepower engine had issues because it was the first year of the overhead valve (Y-Block) engine. I always kid about how the Ford engineers couldn’t get their stuff together for 1953, which was the 50th anniversary year for Ford. The 1953 Ford did not have many innovations or new things from the prior year 1952. Then came the 1954 Ford with a new engine (overhead valve), ball joint suspension replaced rackand-pinion for a smoother ride, astrodial speedometer and, of course, a new Skyliner model. You’d think these would be things for the 50th anniversary celebration but they weren’t ready. Thanks again for responding. Jim Pierce, Florida. A: Jim, it’s always a pleasure to interact with my readers, and I do respond to all letters I receive, be it email or printed letter. I am very impressed with your’54 Skyliner as it sure looks like a pristine example of one of Ford’s most popular and novel creations. I’m glad I christened the ’54 Skyliner the “Godfather of American sunroof/moonroof models.” I’m also impressed you have the ’55 Y-block engine as it’s bigger and produces more horsepower. Additionally, I don’t feel it impacts the value of your car one cent downward and actually makes it more valuable. (I’ll probably hear from the purists).
