Historical aircraft In 1946, the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Chester Nimitz, had a vision to create a flight exhibition team in order to raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and boost Navy morale. In the 1940’s, we thrilled audiences with our precision combat maneuvers in the F6 Hellcat, the F8 Bearcat and the F9 Panther. During the 1950’s, we refined our demonstration with aerobatic maneuvers in the F9 Cougar and F-11 Tiger and introduced the first six-plane delta formation, still flown to this day. By the end of the 1960’s, we were flying the F-4 Phantom, the only two seat aircraft flown by the delta formation. In 1974, we transitioned to the A-4 Skyhawk, a smaller and lighter aircraft with a tighter turning radius allowing for a more dynamic flight demonstration. In 1986, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary by unveiling the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, which we still fly to this day. In 1949, it became necessary for the Blue Angels to operate a support aircraft to move personnel and equipment between show sites. These sup-
port aircraft including the Douglas R4D Sky Train, the Curtiss R5C Commando, the Douglas R5D Skymaster, and the Lockheed C-121 Super Constellation. In 1970 the team received the Lockheed Martin C-130, affectionately known as “Fat Albert.”

The Blue Angels have flown over 10 different aircraft in the team’s 65 year history. Originally, the team flew four aircraft in the signature “Diamond” formation and expanded to six aircraft to showcase both the diamond and solos high performance capability as well as the precision formation flying taught to all Naval Aviators. Today, the squadron flies the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet and the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules. When the squadron receives a F/A-18 Hornet from the fleet, which are at the end of their carrier arrestment functionality, we make a variety of modifications, including removing the nose cannon to install a smokefluid system, inverting a fuel pump, installing a stop watch and adjustable

The first Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO) performance by the Blue Angels’ C-130, affectionately known as “Fat Albert”, took place at NAS Pensacola, FL in November of 1975. Eight solid fuel JATO rocket bottles, each producing 1,000 pounds of thrust, helped propel Fat Albert skyward and captivated millions of spectators each year. These JATO bottles were produced in the Vietnam era to help aircraft take off from short, unimproved run-

Blue Angels Q&A What is the mission of the Blue Angels?
The mission of the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron is to showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach.
Who authorized the establishment of the Blue Angels? The Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, ordered the establishment of the team on April 24, 1946.
The name was picked by the original team when they were planning a show in New York in 1946. One of them came across the name of the city’s famous Blue Angel nightclub in the New Yorker Magazine.
An estimated 11 million spectators view the squadron during air shows each year. Additionally, the Blue Angels visit more than 50,000 people a show season (March through November) during school and hospital visits.
Where was the first Blue Angels air show? Craig Field, Jacksonville, Florida, on June 15, 1946.
On average, how many people view the Blue Angels each year?
What are the requirements for becoming a Blue Angels pilot?
Have any Blue Angels become astronauts?
CDR Chuck Brady, Flight Surgeon, 1989-90.
How long is a Blue Angels tour of duty?
TATTOOS
Officers on the team generally serve two to three years while the enlisted personnel serve three to four years. Each member returns to the fleet after completing a tour with the Blue Angels.

honored to be associated with the team.
How many Marines serve in the squadron?
There are 15 Marines on the 2013 team. Three officers and 5 enlisted aircrew in Fat Albert Airlines, seven in maintenance and two officers flying in the #3 and #4 positions.
No. Each member of the squadron volunteers for duty with the Blue Angels. Due to extreme competition at all levels, each individual feels especially
How many females are in the squadron?
HEALTH
What is the minimum visibility for a Blue Angel performance?
The number of females varies each year. The 2013 team has 16 females.
To be able to perform, the Blue Angels must have at least three nautical miles of visibility horizontally from centerpoint, and a minimum cloud ceiling of 1,500 feet which the FAA can waive to 1,000 feet. At these minimums, the Blue Angels can perform a limited number of maneuvers in what is called a “flat” show. When the ceiling is at least 4,500 feet and visibility at least three nautical miles a “low” show can be performed, which includes some rolling maneuvers. With a minimum ceiling of 8,000 feet and visibility of three nautical miles, the Blue Angels can perform their “high” show, which includes all maneuvers.
What is the closest distance that the jets fly to each other?
The closest the diamond will fly to each other is 18 inches during the Diamond 360 maneuver.
What are the fastest and slowest speeds flown during an air show? 6 October 1, 2014 THE MILITARY PRESS
www.MilitaryPress.com • editorsdesk@militarypress.com
Over 30 Years experience
The fastest speed is about 700 mph (just under Mach 1; Sneak Pass) and the slowest speed is about 120 mph (indicated speed; Section High Alpha), both flown by the solo pilots during the show.
Are Blue Angels aircraft carrier capable? All of the Blue Angels’ jets are carriercapable and can be made
combat ready in about 72 hours. The squadron’s C-130 (“Fat Albert”) is manned by an all-Marine Corps crew and was not designed for carrier operations.
How much does an F/A-18 cost?
The basic acquisition price of a single F/A-18 A Hornet is approximately $21 million. The cost of additional weapons-related equipment varies according to the configuration and use of each aircraft can significantly increase the total price.
What is the top speed and rate of climb of an F/A-18?
vides a traceable path for spectators to follow, so they can see the flight profile that has been flown. It also enhances safety of flight by providing a valuable means by which the solo pilots can see each other during opposing maneuvers and conditions of lowered visibility or haze. The smoke poses no hazard to the environment.
What is the difference between a Blue Angel Hornet and the new F/A18 E/F Super Hornet?
The Super Hornet is 25% larger, can fly 40% further, remain on station 80% longer and carry more weapons than its predecessors. The Super Hornet F/A-18 E/F models have deployed with battle groups since 2001. While the Super Hornet has more recent technology, the Hornet is more suitable to the needs of the current team due to its light weight and slick maneuverability.

US Navy Blue Angels
The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Blue Angels, has been the indisputable “star of the show” since the 1940s. Flying F/A18 Hornets painted in Navy Blue and Gold since 1986, these masters of the sky have demonstrated aerial excellence in the Navy’s top piston and jet aircraft. Click here for more about the Blue Angels and their traveling companion, the Marine Corps C-130 named “Fat Albert.”
Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Demo
The Marine Air-Ground Task Force Demonstration displays the coordinated use of close air support, armor, artillery and infantry forces. Hornets and Harriers provide cover for Marine Corps paratroopers as helicopters bring in platoons of riflemen. C-130′s provide aerial re-fueling overhead while M1-A1 tanks and LAV’s support the ground offensive. Spectacular special effects simulate air-to-ground explosions.
Golden Knights have been holding audiences in the palm of their hands all over the world with their feats of aerial acrobatics. Now in their 53rd year of entertaining both young and old with their amaz- ing aerial skills, the men and women of the Golden Knights continue to show why they are considered the world’s best parachute team.
F-35B Lightning
Designed to operate from austere bases and a range of AVIATIONcapable ships with its short takeoff/vertical landing capability, the F-35B can also takeoff and land conventionally from longer runways on major bases. F-35B aircraft have been delivered to the U.S. Marines and the U.K., whose forces are training together at the Integrated Training Center at Eglin Air Force Base. STOVL aircraft are also stationed at the first operational F-35 base, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., and are completing flight test at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, MD.
Since beginning his air show career in the mid-70s, Sean Tucker has flown more than 1200 performances at more than 475 air shows, in front of more than 105 million fans. In the upcoming season alone, Tucker and Team Oracle will entertain nearly 8 million fans at 13 shows throughout North America. “I like to think that I bring the fans’ dreams of flying into the plane with me, and there’s nowhere I’d rather be than in the cockpit. That’s why I train so hard to keep the edge!” Sean has logged over 25,000
hours flying, which if done all at once, would take almost three years to complete. In 2013 Sean D. Tucker was named Chairman on the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles program. Since 1992 the Young Eagles program with its 40,000 volunteer pilots has provided more than 1.8 million rides to children ages 8 to 17. Sean is honored to lead an organization that inspires the next generation of pilots to follow their passion.”
The United States Navy Parachute Team, commonly known as the Leap Frogs, is the parachute demonstration team of the United States Navy. They consist of an all-volunteer team of active-duty personnel drawn from Naval Special Warfare (NSW), including Navy SEALs, Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) and support personnel. The team is sanctioned by the Department of Defense and recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dear Sir or Ma’am, As active duty servicemen, my colleagues and I found the piece “A country founded by geniuses but run by idiots,” to be anecdotal and polarizing at best. Dear Mr. Matz, I am Dennis Martinez, U.S. Marine veteran (Vietnam War era 1974 to 1976 — volunteered to go overseas but did not get to). I enjoy the Military Press very much especially the section on past years/past presidents. Reminds me of Marine Corps Birthday 1975 when former President Richard M. Nixon talked to and drank a beer with me. I really, really like the Subway sandwich coupons for August through October. What a great deal! It helps veterans eat well, wisely and economically, too. Yours in patriotism, Dennis Martinez
notes from Fox news, and certainly should not be disperssed amongst us. I simply do not have time to get into the facts but there are many problems with the article. It entices the notion that profiling is okay for one. As for its gun issues, its not the government but the people (over 90%) of this nation who favor gun control which is more than a mandate for our elected leaders to act. As for “entitlements,” 1 in 6 Americans need food assistance and the vast majority of them work and still can’t make ends meet! Furthermore, the fundamentalism is unwarranted; Being against sexual education is your purgative but being against classes on diversity? What time period in America is this? Nobody is being stripped of Constitutional rights, or to defend yourself. Just because Rush Limbaugh or Fox news says it doesn’t make it right. The author is clearly delusional and paranoid of the United states Government, a Government I have been sworn to defend and die for. Please be mindful next time and be committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all. — MP Reader

Transitional housing helps homeless vets By Heather Siegel For veterans sleeping on the streets, the first step to help them has to be to get them into transitional housing. Interfaith Community Services of Escondido (ICS) has been providing temporary housing to veterans for more than ten years in their physical location at Quince and Washington, Escondido, 92025, under the name of Merle’s Place One and Two. The ICS hides the fact that at any one time, more than forty male vets are living jam-packed on-site, in the back of the ICS’s central offices. What was formerly a garage has been refurbished and turned into a permanent shelter. Case Managers live on board to keep the vets on a tight schedule to move forward with their lives. The vets can stay at Merle’s Place for up to two years to pursue their own individual employment, permanent housing, and school options. During the daytime hours, when ICS is providing services to other clients, the vets are expected to be off-site. “There’s often not enough in our budget to provide the vets with any more than the basic necessities, though,” said Dean Dauphinais, Director of Veterans Services of Merle’s Place, One and Two. The men bring what they own with them and store their gear in lockers. That’s where the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Rincon del Diablo Chapter (NSDAR), based in Rancho Bernardo, came into the picture three years ago. “The men were using a cardboard box for a pillow prior to coming in to the backside, hidden from the street, of the ICS offices. We saw the immediate need to provide the vets with linens, which includes the pillows, top and bottom sheets, pillowcases, washcloths, towels, and a beautiful comforter on each mattress,” said Jan Compton, NSDAR Chapter, Homeless Veterans Project Coordinator. The timing was fortuitous. Merle’s Place One and Two has a small but established reputation for helping homeless vets in the North County community. “The NSDAR Chapter was looking for a new project, in 2011, that was consistent with our goals of encouraging a love of U.S. history, advancing education and supporting patriotism,” said Rachel Jorgenson, NSDAR Chapter Regent (President). “We try to provide a decent lifestyle until the vet can get sustainable income to move into permanent housing,” said Dauphinais. “This is not a flop house but a real chance.” The NSDAR sees helping Merle’s Place as an ongoing project. “When a vet leaves Merle’s Place, unfortunately, there’s a new vet coming in off the street, needing a new set of linens,” said Phyllis Young, NSDAR Project Coordinator for the several social welfare

programs that the Chapter supports. The NSDAR celebrates its 125th year anniversary as a national women’s service organization in 2015. “We want the men to know we care about them,” stated Compton in a recent interview. “The beautiful large quilt on the wall, donated by one of our members, is that daily reminder that we have not forgotten them.” If a vet wants to be placed in Merle’s Place One and Two, please contact Dean Dauphinais directly via email HOUSING, cont’d. on Page 24 EDUCATION

Hiring event for U.S. military truckers
Happy 239th Birthday
NAVY
The U.S. Navy traces its roots back to the privateers that were employed to attack British commerce in the early days of the revolution. On October 13, 1775 the Continental Congress, established a small naval force, hoping that a small navy would be able to offset the uncontested exercise of British sea power. The early Continental navy was not expected to take on the British navy for control of the seas. This small naval force was designed to work with privateers to wage tactical raids against the transports that supplied British forces in North America. To accomplish this mission the Continental Congress purchased, converted, and constructed a fleet of small ships--frigates, brigs, sloops, and schooners. These navy ships sailed independently or in pairs hunting British commerce ships and transports like prey, avoiding whenever possible fights with Royal Navy menof-war. The Continental navy faced several obstacles both during and after the rev-
olution – mostly political and economic. Two years after the end of the war, the money-poor Congress sold off the last ship of the Continental navy, the frigate Alliance. In the 1790’s Europe began to relax many mercantile commercial restrictions and the U.S. trade and the shipping industry expanded accordingly. However, as the number of U.S. ships increased so did the possibility increased attacks by the European powers and pirates. In March 1794 Congress responded by calling for the construction of a half-dozen frigates. And, once again, the United States had a navy. Although the Continental navy was later dismantled, October 13, 1775 remains the U.S. Navy’s official birthday. From these humble beginnings, the world’s most powerful naval force was born. With thousands of ships and aircraft serving worldwide, the U.S. Navy is a force to be reckoned with. To learn more about the early years of the U.S. Navy, visit the U.S. Naval Historical Center website.
By Mark Baird HirePatriots.com On October 17, HirePatriots is holding a Hiring event at the QLN Conference Center on Avenida Del Oro, in Oceanside, CA for U.S. veterans that want to be truck drivers. We have several major trucking companies that will be attending for the purpose of filling their truck driver positions and more. Some of these companies provide free training for veterans that are not currently licensed as commercial drivers. Being a truck driver today is one of the most secure jobs in the country. There are currently over 300,000 available positions. Once you are trained, licensed and on the road, you are valued transportation commodity. The average wage for a trucker starting out is $45K. Most truck companies will also train and hire a trucker’s wife too. They can drive the same rig across country. Of course, their combined starting salary would be around $90,000 a year. HirePatriots.com is hosting this event. They are creating a better way
to get veterans hired that will replace ineffective job fairs. The purpose of HirePatriots’ “US Veteran “Work Ready” Hiring Events is to have US veterans walk out of their Hiring events with a job. I have several trucking companies that are desperate for drivers. So we are inviting all the transitioning military and veterans who want to be truckers to this event. The attending companies promise to hire qualified attendees that day! It is important for interested, job seeking US veterans to register to attend this event early. Please send an email to hirepatriots@gmail.com and give us your contact info. We will get you registered. The venue for this event can only hold 70 job seekers. Send us an email today and reserve your seat. If you really want to be a truck driver, you will begin the hiring process that day. These companies want veterans to drive their trucks!

Where does Jeter rank among the 10 greatest Yankees?
By Kevin Kernan Now that Derek Jeter has announced he is retiring at the end of the 2014 season, a panel of 10 Post baseball experts assembled their lists of the 10 Greatest Yankees. This is not just the end of Jeter’s career, for a generation of fans, this is the end a chapter of Yankee greatness. This generation now understands how it once felt to a previous generation when Mickey Mantle limped away from the the game or when Joe DiMaggio walked away from all those cheers. COMMUNITY
16 October 1, 2014 THE MILITARY PRESS
So where does Jeter belong in the list of 10 Greatest Yankees? Babe Ruth undoubtedly is at the top of the list, with Lou Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle not far behind. To me, Jeter belongs one notch below Ruth because of where he stands on the all-time lists and the way he played in pinstripes. The final Post tally has him finishing sixth. Where No. 2 truly belongs is open to debate, and will be to your children’s children. Here are the New York Post’s 10 Greatest Yankees of All-Time, based on a poll of the paper’s baseball writers and editors, nine of whom vote for the Hall of Fame: 1. Babe Ruth – The Bambino’s 714 homers stood as a record from 1935-74. Still regarded by most as baseball’s alltime greatest player. 2. Lou Gehrig – The Iron Horse’s 2,130 consecutive games streak was broken by Cal Ripken Jr. and his Yankees hit record eclipsed by Jeter. 3. Joe DiMaggio – Joltin’ Joe had a record 56-game hitting streak in 1941 … and in 1954 married Marilyn Monroe! 4. Mickey Mantle – The Mick won the Triple Crown in 1956 and had 536 homers in an injury-wracked career. 5. Yogi Berra – The most quotable Yankee won 10 rings as a player, bagged three AL MVPs and made the All-Star team 18 times. 6. Derek Jeter – The Captain since 2003, Jeter is the all-time Yankees hit leader with 3,316 and counting, with five rings on his fingers including 2000 World Series MVP. Also was AL Rookie of the Year in 1996 and a 13-time AllStar. 7. Mariano Rivera – Mo is baseball’s all-time saves leader with 653. 8. Whitey Ford – The Chairman of the Board is the Yanks’ all-time wins leader with 236. 9. Bill Dickey – Career Yankee catcher won eight rings as a player. 10. Don Mattingly – Donnie Baseball hit .307 with 1,099 RBIs in an injuryshortened career, won one MVP but is a rare Yankee star with no World Series titles. www.MilitaryPress.com • editorsdesk@militarypress.com

CHARGERS REPORT
Ajirotutu making name on special teams
From Wikipediaa.com
By Art Garcia Over the past decade a number of undrafted free agents have made significant contributions to the success of the Chargers. Antonio Gates, Kris Dielman, Malcom Floyd, Stephen Cooper, Kassim Osgood, Jacques Cesaire and Eric Parker are a few of the names the Chargers’ scouting department signed after going undrafted. Another player making a name for himself is wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu. Having led the team in special teams tackles with 12 last season, Ajirotutu led the team with four tackles this preseason and already has four tackles through the first three games of ’14. MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. caught up with Ajirotutu and asked a few questions about his experience in the NFL and what it is like to battle for a roster spot each year. AG: This is your fifth year in the NFL as an undrafted free agent; describe what it’s like at the end of training camp when you know your name is on that proverbial ‘bubble’ list of making the team? SA: Being back-and-forth on the bubble like that is stressful but you have to tune that out and come out here and do your job. Whatever the coaches ask of you, you just go out there and do it and know that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and if you put in the hard work you reap what you sow pretty much. AG: It seems like your name always comes down to the final cuts at the end of training camp. Can you describe what it’s like to have to sit around waiting
for the phone call that tells you whether you made the team or not? SA: It’s stressful not knowing, but you also know the value you bring to the team and what you’ve done during the preseason. You have to be content with that because, obviously, that’s what they evaluate you on – now I’m not going to say I wasn’t a little nervous because I’ve been cut before, but this year I had a good feeling I was going to make the team. AG: Knowing that, what’s your training regimen like during the offseason? SA: I’ve been doing training since February and March, pretty much since last season ended. I’ve been doing boxing; running; lifting; doing beach workouts and running stairs here in town. I try to prepare myself to do everything so that when competition is on the line I put my best foot forward. AG: Do you train by yourself, with other players on the team or with former teammates from college? SA: I train with Ryan (Mathews) and a couple guys here and there where we train here (at the Chargers facility), but it’s pretty much just me and Ryan where we go various places and workout. AG: What was your thoughts having caught the game-winning pass at Kansas City last year? SA: My thoughts were … I just wanted to do whatever I could to help the team win. We were obviously down on that drive everyone was making plays, so when the ball came my way it was my turn

After surprising with two touchdowns on four catches Week 3 at Buffalo, Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal found the end zone twice again Week 4 against Jacksonville. But this time, that wasn’t the full extent of his production. He caught five passes for 105 yards, and his seven targets were second-most to Keenan Allen’s 11. Photo from NBCSports.com
then you will know. Is that a pretty accurate description? SA: That’s funny… That is a couple of guy’s jobs but mine is to go down there and use my hands and my feet and make some plays. It takes an attitude – but when you’re one of the 52 guys in here (the locker room) it doesn’t take much to get motivated to go do it because one play the you mess up on or loaf on, that could be your last play (doing it).
The Endzone SA: It takes determination; it takes just the willingness to do whatever it takes to make a play. Also, knowing your role on the team and my role is to make plays on special teams and if I get thrown in there as a receiver I have to make plays there as well – so it’s (his role) kind of step up and make a play. I was just glad to be a part of a win that sparked something special. AG: You have made quite a name for yourself on special teams, what kind of mindset does it take to excel at covering kicks and punts?
double-sided. AG: Former Chargers special teams captain Steve Hendrickson once said if you want to experience covering kicks in the NFL, stand at the edge of the driveway and run full-speed into the garage door about five or six times and

By throwing a touchdown pass against the Jaguars quarterback Philip Rivers set a new team record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass (24). Fair exchange
Two couples go on vacation together. After a week, they are thoroughly bored. The men decide that maybe life will take on new meaning if they change partners. They all agree that it’s an experiment worth trying. The morning after the switch, one of the husbands says, “I’m glad we tried this. It was exhilarating. Come on, let’s go in the other room and see how the girls got on.’’
At the golf course
A pastor, a doctor and a jewish rabbi wait for a particularly slow group of golfers. The rabbi fumes, “What’s with these guys? We’ve been waiting for 15 minutes!” The pastor says, “Hey, here comes the groundskeeper. Let’s have a word

with him.” “Say, George, what’s with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?” the doctor asks. The groundskeeper tells them that the other golfers are a group of blind firefighters who lost their sight saving the clubhouse from a fire and that they come and play for free whenever they want. The group is silent for a moment. The pastor says, “That’s so sad. I will say a special prayer for them tonight.” The doctor says, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist buddy and see if there’s anything he can do for them.” The rabbi says, “Why can’t these guys play at night?”
Mr. Macho
A typical macho man married typical good-looking woman and, after the wedding, laid down the following rules: “I’ll be home when I want, if I want and at what time I want — and I don’t expect any hassle from you. I expect dinner to be on the table unless I tell you otherwise. I’ll go hunting, fishing, boozing, and card-playing when I want with my old buddies and don’t you give me a hard time about it. Those are my rules. Any comments?” His new bride said, “No, that’s fine with me. Just understand that there’ll be sex here at 7 o’clock every night — whether you’re here or not.”
SUDOKU The rules to play Sudoku are quite simple. Fill in the blanks so that each row, each column, and each of the nine 3x3 grids contain one instance of each of the numbers 1 through 9.

CALIFORNIA / NEVADA ROUNDUP
Places everyone! Fall theater season is here By Howard Hian www.travels-with-Hian.com As the calendar moves into the fall months, theater arts deserve attention.
San Diego
Now we know why he was a general
In an interview, General Norman Schwarzkopf was asked if he thought there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harbored and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks on America. His answer was classic Schwarzkopf. The General said, "I believe that forgiving them is God's function... OUR job is to arrange the meeting."
Navy SEAL protocol
Dana Perino of Fox News describing an interview she recently had with a Navy SEAL. After discussing all the countries that he had been sent to, she asked if they had to learn several languages? "Oh, no ma'am. We don't go there to talk."
Broadway San Diego is the “big stage” musical spot in the city. It has presented The Phantom Of The Opera, Miss Saigon, The Producers, Les Miserables, The Lion King and Wicked. A few of their upcoming shows include Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, Blue Man Group and Motown the Musical. For the complete Civic Center calendar, visit www.broadwaysd.com. The venerable Old Globe was built in 1935 to present Shakespeare’s plays during the California Pacific International Exposition. Today it produces 15 main stage shows ranging from its Shakespeare roots to Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It is nationally acknowledged as a top-ranked regional theater. For the schedule, logon to www.oldglobe.org. The award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, has three main stages. Located on the campus of the University of California San Diego, the two institutions share facilities, technical staff and training in theater arts. The Playhouse also provides residencies for UCSD graduate students in acting, directing, design and stage management. Go to www. lajollaplayhouse.org for the lineup of plays Cygnet Theater is located in the “birthplace of California,” historic Old Town San Diego State Park. Its cozy size makes it a perfect setting for offBroadway type shows. The 2014/2015
season will include seven plays and the schedule always includes low price previews. Visit www.cygnettheater.com for information. The San Diego REP’s downtown Lyceum Theater features three intimate stages. Founded in 1976, it has received over 200 awards for artistic excellence. They produce over 300 performances and events a year (some are free). The REP’s relationship with the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts allows students to re-
hearse and perform with professionals. More can be found at www.sdrep.org. Note: parking is validated at Horton Plaza.
Las Vegas
Aside from the fabulous extravaganzas the Strip is known for, there are many opportunities to see Broadway musicals. Here are a few. Harrah’s presents the Tony Award winning Million Dollar Quartet, a “rock THEATER, cont’d. on Page 25

The re-creation of the historic evening that Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins got together is a rollicking celebration of great music. This is a personal favorite. Go to www. harrahslasvegas.com for information. It’s funny to think about the Jersey Boys in Paris but it’s the hotel on The Strip, not the city. This is the Tony Award winning musical story of
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that has a cult-like following. Take a look at www.parislasvegas.com for details. The Venetian Las Vegas is featuring GEORGIA ON MY MIND: Celebrating the Music of Ray Charles. The show has a bevy of Emmy and Grammy winners including Clint Holmes, TAKE, Kirk Whalum and six time nominee Nnenna Freelon.
