What’s next for Marine women in combat By Hope Hodge Seck, MilitaryTimes.com The coming year will bring an end to speculation over the future of combat integration for the Marine Corps. Like the leaders of the other service branches, Commandant Gen. Joe Dunford must make a recommendation to the defense secretary by the end of 2015 — either supporting the opening of every combat job to women or requesting specific exceptions. As the decision point draws near, the Marine Corps’ data-gathering operation on the subject is in full swing. To date, 98 female enlisted Marines have graduated from the rifleman track at Infantry Training Battalion aboard Camp Lejeune, North Car-
olina, for a 44 percent female graduation rate since the course began to accept female volunteers in late 2013, said Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Maureen Krebs. Four female officers have completed the grueling combat endurance test that kicks off the Infantry Officers Course since it opened to female volunteers in 2012, but none has yet graduated the course. Though earlier this year IOC was opened to female lieutenants and captains from the fleet as well as new graduates of The Basic School in an effort to draw more volunteers through, participation numbers remain low. The next course, set to begin Jan. 8, will include two female TBS graduates, Krebs said. Meanwhile, the Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force, in which male and female Marines train in ground combat units to develop gender-neutral job standards for each specialty, is preparing for a “deployment” to the West Coast in order to test existing training and readiness standards. All research, including the volunteer tracks at the infantry training courses, is set to end this spring, said Krebs.
“That will allow us the time to analyze and collate the data and give [Dunford] time to make an informed recommendation to the Secretary of Defense,” she said via email. Ahead of the final decision, the Marine Corps has introduced a “commander’s tool kit” of optional training focusing on unconscious bias and organizational change to prepare Marines for gender integration. These courses may see greater use among units as the year wears on. Before year’s end, the Marine Corps is also due to require male and female Marines to complete pullups. The Marine Corps has delayed this new requirement on multiple occasions acknowledging earlier this year that only 45 percent of female Marines had been able to complete the minimum three pullups in testing. Currently, a maximum score for female Marines who opt to complete pullups for their physical fitness test is eight pullups, compared with 20 for men; officials say these standards could change after the Corps completes its research efforts.

the
TRUTH
hurts sometimes
When we are on top, everybody wants to take a shot at you. The fastest gun in the West always knew that. So does the heavyweight champion of the world. And I’m sure the runner-up in the Miss America pageant is always waiting for No. 1 to screw up.
That is the plight of the United States of America. This country has done more to advance the cause of freedom around the world than all of the other countries put together. We give more money to charity, support more humanitarian projects, prop up more downtrodden civilizations than anyone. Yet people in other countries line up to take shots at us. I was reminded of this by the column written by Tom Lees in a recent issue of the Norristown, Penn. Times Herald. Lees is the very well-read, very passionate local educator who writes the weekly column that appears in the middle of the Editorial page. His opinions often set that page ablaze. He leans slightly to the left … if “leaning” could be measured at about an 89-degree angle. No matter. His columns attract attention, inspire thought and spark spirited discussions. That’s what good columns are supposed to do. His latest column got me thinking. He focused on a meeting with a former student who had spent some time teaching in Mozambique and Brazil. He passed on the information that people in those countries are “shocked by some of the things (Americans) do.” And what have the people in Mozambique done lately to make this world better? It is important not to confuse comments sparked by jealousy with real, constructive, fair-and-balanced criticisms. Sometimes, it is best to find the true root of critical thinking in humor. Canada, our neighbor to the north, has been the butt of American jokes for years. We made fun of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police when the
cartoon character Dudley Do-Right was created. And then there is all the years of comedians making fun of Canadian hockey players. People who are missing teeth are always funny – except to those who are missing teeth. It took a few years, but the Canadians have finally fired back. A recent Canadian publication got terrific mileage out of publishing – a la David Letterman – its Top Ten List of American Stupidity. Remember not to shoot the messenger here. Just reporting what they are saying about us across the border to the north. Without further introduction, direct from Canada, here it is: 10) Only in America ... could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000.00 a plate campaign fundraising event. 9) Only in America ... could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President, a black Attorney General and roughly 20 percent of the federal workforce is black while only 14 percent of the population is black. Yet 40-plus percent of all federal entitlements goes to black Americans, which is three times the rate that go to whites, and five times the rate that go to Hispanics! 8) Only in America ... could they have the two people most responsible for the tax code, Timothy Geithner (the head of the Treasury Department) and Charles Rangel (who once ran the Ways and Means Committee), BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes. 7) Only in America ... can they have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily TRUTH, cont’d. on Page 20

Obama asks Congress to approve military force against ISIS HEALTH
PRESIDENT IS OFFERING TO LIMIT AUTHORIZATION TO 3 YEARS President Obama has asked Congress to formally authorize military force against ISIS, arguing the militants could pose a threat to the US homeland if their violent power grab goes unchecked. In the three-page draft resolution, Obama is offering to limit
authorization to three years, extending to the next president the powers and the debate over renewal for what he envisions as a long-range battle. He is proposing no geographic limitations where US forces could pursue the elusive militants. The authorization covers the Islamic State and “associated persons or forces,” defined as those fighting on behalf of or alongside ISIS “or any closely-related successor entity in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners.” The proposal bans “enduring offensive combat operations,” and he says his draft would not authorize longterm, large-scale ground combat operations like those deployed in the past to Iraq and Afghanistan, arguing those battles should be left to local forces instead of the US military. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the provision would allow special operations missions, such as potential raids targeting Islamic State leaders or ones like the failed attempt last summer to rescue 26-year-old Kayla Mueller and other hostages held by the group. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he appreciated the president seeking the authorization and would quickly begin holding “rigorous hearings” on the White House request.

Oldest living USS Arizona crew member to have survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died; 8 remaining YUBA CITY, Calif. — The oldest living crew member of the battleship USS Arizona to have survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has died in Northern California at the age of 100. Retired Navy Lt. Commander Joseph Langdell died on Feb. 4 at a nursing home in Yuba City, California, according to his son, Ted Langdell. A tally maintained by the USS Arizona Reunion Association, for which Langdell had served as president, identified him as not only the oldest Arizona survivor, but the last surviving officer from the naval ship that lost 1,177 men — nearly four-fifths of its crew — when it was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941. Langdell was an ensign on an assignment that had him sleeping on a military base adjacent to the ship in Honolulu on the morning Pearl Harbor was attacked. He spent the following hours and days trying to rescue shipmates from the burning water, preparing for another possible air assault and leading the survivors tasked with removing the remains of the dead from
the partially sunken ship, his son said. “I felt absolutely helpless as I watched the attack,” Langdell told The Associated Press on the 56th anniversary of the attack that drew the United States into World War II. “If I had been aboard, I would have been killed in that No. 2 (gun) turret. That was the one that blew up. It was my luck to be assigned off the ship that day.” Ted Langdell said his father did not talk about Pearl Harbor during his childhood and returned there for the first time since the war in 1976, when his older son was in the Navy. After that, Langdell took comfort in meeting with fellow survivors and pride in always wearing a USS Arizona hat. “It drew attention not just to him, but gave him the chance to tell stories,” the son said. “Anyone in the service has stories to tell if you make the effort to listen and to really hear and try to understand what they are saying.” Per his wishes, Langdell’s ashes will be put aboard the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii, mostly likely on Dec. 7.

By Kate Horrell paycheck-chronicles.military.com The recent Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization WEDDINGS Commission (MCRMC) report once again highlights the fact that the current, amazingly generous Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits aren’t guaranteed to remain so glorious. Historically, educational benefits have shrunk during times of military downsizing, and we are in the middle of a serious downsize. Plus, I’ve said since day one that the current Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits are more than our country can afford to sustain. If you have earned the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and you think you have a plan to maximize the benefit to your family, then you might want to consider having a plan B. You might also need a plan C and a plan D. The MCRMC makes several recommendations regarding educational benefits. The specific recommendation that most interests me is about the housing allowance that currently comes with the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Under the current rules, everyone except active duty spouses receives a monthly housing stipend when using Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits, including the dependent children using benefits transferred from a parent. The commission recommends that this housing payment be removed for those using transferred benefits, effective 1 July 2017. Vet shines the light on 88,000 MIAs and the real story of the Battle of the Philippines
By Steven Barber The relentless, sweltering and oppressive heat rains down on 94-year-old WWII veteran and the production team of Vanilla Fire Productions at the Manila Hotel on this 70th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 2014. Temperature 101 degrees. Humidity 99 percent! The last WWII veteran in the fight is on his final mission to shed light on the 88,000 MIAs from WWII that never made it home. Leon Cooper is an anomaly in every way imaginable. He has a 140 IQ and undiminished capacity on every level. He has boot-strapped one feature documentary for over $200,000, Return to Tarawa, which was the highest rated documentary in history on the Discoveries Military Channel. Leon has also been involved with the Oscar short-listed film, Until They Are Home, and can be seen in 41 countries on Netflix Until They Are Home, Return To Tarawa, and Return to the Philippines. Mr. Cooper is not only a patriot of the highest order, he is a one-man wrecking crew to right this egregious wrong from 70 years ago — the absolute and total disregard of the repatriation of over 88,000 war dead from WWII. This new film, Return to the Philippines, The Leon Cooper Story, is yet another feature documentary chronicling the efforts of Leon Cooper as he risks his health and life to cast a bright light on this subject of Americas MIAs and the real story of the battle of the Philippines. This is day four of principle photography, and has circumstance would have it, June 6, the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The Pacific, known to many as MacArthur’s War, is 10,000 miles from the beaches of Normandy, but certainly can not be overlooked as far as its enormity and importance to the preservation of western society. CHARGERS REPORT By Art Garcia In this report on Free Agency we focus on the defense where three starters manning the Chargers secondary are set to hit the open market when the NFL calendar begins March 10. The belief around San Diego sports talk radio is GM Tom Telesco’s main focus will be re-signing cornerback Brandon Flowers and filling other needs on the team before retaining the services of safety Marcus Gilchrist and cornerback Shareece Wright. With the defense finishing 26th against the run (124 yds. per gm.) and 29th in sacks (7), it is clear the defense needs to improve big-time for any kind of success in 2015. As good as defensive end Corey Liuget has proven to be, the defense needs a legitimate 3-4 tackle to stuff the run and another impact pass rusher to pressure the quarterback. The linebacker corps, when healthy, has shown the talent to be one of top young units in the league. However, thanks to recurring injuries to the likes of Donald Butler, Melvin Ingram,
Defense is a major concern as Free Agency looms
Manti Te’o and rookie Jerry Attaochu, they have yet to develop into that cohesive unit it takes to be a dominating defense. Recently, Spotrac listed the Chargers’ top
er Eddie Royal and running back Ryan Mathews will likely be signed to teamfriendly contracts if they return. The retirements of Nick Hardwick and Jeromy Clarey gives Telesco some much-
10 free agents based on their 2014 salary cap hit and among the players listed, six were on offense. Of the six players, only offensive tackle King Dunlap will command a big contract where receiv-
needed cap space to negotiate with. Below is a look at the four players on the Chargers’ top 10 free agent list who are on the defensive side of the ball. Coming in at No. 4 is outside line-
backer Dwight Freeney at $4,078,000. Signed as a free agent in 2013, Freeney looked impressive before tearing his quad in just the fourth game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys. Although he took a $1 million pay cut to help the team last March, I believe Telesco goes the youth-movement route rather than bringing back Freeney, who turns 35 later this month. As mentioned above, resigning Flowers should be priority No.1. The leadership Flowers brought to the team had a major impact both on and off the field as the secondary jumped from 29th in pass defense in 2013 to fourth in 2014. In addition to his influence on his fellow cornerbacks, Flowers’ play allowed safety Eric Weddle to focus on his own responsibilities which resulted in an All-Pro performance. Look for Flowers to get a nice increase to the $3,000,000 he earned last season, which ranked sixth on the Chargers’ list. FREE AGENCY, cont’d. on Page 20

Ellenberger looking to Report: redeem himself at UFC 184
With the main card now set for UFC 184 Rousey vs. Zingano on Feb. 28, one of the more intriguing matches of the night is a welterweight battle between longtime UFC veterans Jake ‘The Juggernaut’ Ellenberger and Josh Koscheck. In an era of ‘what have you done for me lately,’ this could very well be a make or break fight to stay active in the UFC with both fighters entering the Octagon riding a three-fight losing streak. As the fight approaches, Ellenberger, a former Marine, answered a few questions from MP reporter Art Garcia Jr. AG: What made you decide to join the Marines? JE: One of my best friends growing up already enlisted and I thought it was like the toughest men on the planet. I can be that guy. I had that young and ignorant ambition to join. I also had lots of other friends enlisting in infantry. You really learn what real life is, that’s how I got intrigued. (I was) attracted to being the best. AG: Did your experiences as a Marine have any effect on your MMA career? JE: It really did. It gave me more discipline for starters; it was a big wake up call for me. (Being a Marine) had a
big impact, that’s how I got interested in training. I had fun training because of the discipline and structure I learned. AG: Can you describe the feeling of knocking out an opponent? JE: It’s a little bit surreal. Sometimes we forget as human beings the power and potential we possess. As a competitor, you always want to do what it takes to win. The accomplishment of the win is great, but at the same time you don’t want anyone to get seriously hurt. AG: Tell me about Josh Koscheck and how you match up against him? JE: He’s kind of toward the end of his career. As far as us matching up, it’s a fantastic fight. There is nowhere I
feel like he can beat me. AG: What’s your key to victory over him? JE: Just staying relaxed; enjoying it and not doing anything stupid. Stay disciplined the entire fight. AG: Is fighting more mentally or physically challenging for you? JE: It’s much more mental. The psychological aspect affects you greatly. It’s always an internal battle. AG: How is your camp going? Did you have any major changes? JE: Things are going well. I’ve been working with a guy who did a lot of Special Forces work in his background. No big changes, training partners that match well with Koscheck’s abilities. AG: How much lon-
GUN RANGE
ger do you see yourself competing and what are your plans once you do retire out of the ring? JE: Fighting is so physically and emotionally demanding. It’s tough to say how much longer I will fight. A couple years – three or four at most with no injuries or anything? It’s hard to say. I would be interested in broadcasting, I enjoy that. Maybe be in some movies, make a couple million! AG: If you could compete in another pro sport what would it be and why? JE: I played a lot of sports growing up. I loved playing hockey and baseball. I played almost every position in baseball; I was all over the field. We weren’t wealthy growing up so it was street hockey, too expensive to pursue. Maybe I would play baseball. It’s tough to say. AG: Last question – it’s Feb. 28th -walk me through the day, what’s your routine? Is it the same pre-fight preparation with regards to meals; music; meditation; relaxation; other? JE: I really just try to stay relaxed; listen to a lot of music and just relax and meditate. I try not to think about it – don’t let it mentally drain you. I also like to watch movies. New models at Lakeside’s Riverview Courts
Riverview Courts has just released five new cul-de-sac homes in Phase 3B and unveiled their new Model 3XL home. This exciting new model offers an expanded great room, 3 bedrooms plus a loft and an extended garage. “We listen to our buyers,” said Stefan LaCasse, homebuilder and Quinn Communities president. “Those buyers interested in our Plan 3 wanted a little more room for gatherings of family and friends so we enlarged the great room. We also received comments from handymen and hobbyists that wanted a place to work, so we added more square footage to the garage for a workbench area.” Move in for Phase 3B homes is anticipated for late spring of this year. Prices start from just $415,995. Riverview Courts is located at 9662 Caminito Quentin in Lakeside and is one of the fastest selling communities in East County. There are 26 exciting new single-family detached homes in three individual two-story designs. All plans have 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and range from 1611 to 1832 square feet of living space. Each home has a twospace attached, drywall-finished garage
plus full-yard fencing and front-yard landscaping with automatic irrigation, maintained by the HOA. “If someone is interested in purchasing a Plan 2 home, they should not wait,” added Teresa Haynes Community Sales Manager. “Phase 3B includes the last two Plan 2 homes scheduled to be built in Riverview Courts.” Those homebuyers interested in purchasing a Plan 1 home, can now take advantage of the savings provided by the new FHA mortgage insurance premiums recently announced by HUD. “This HUD program does have a home loan limit on it though of up to $417,000,” continued Haynes. “But our Plan 1 homes start at just $415,995 so that is a perfect fit. Riverview Courts offers many finance packages and the preferred lender is standing by to answer questions. Riverview Courts homes have many value adding features such as granite countertops, designer ceramic tile flooring and drywall-finished garages. Aliens out in space were looking down on Earth. One said, “It seems the dominant life forms have developed satellite-based weapons.” The second asked, “Are they an emerging intelligence?” “I don’t think so,” the first responded, “They have their weapons pointed at themselves!”
Just for Laughs Got faith?
A climber fell off a cliff, and as he tumbled down, he caught hold of a small branch “HELP! IS THERE ANYBODY UP THERE?” he shouted. A majestic voice boomed through the gorge: “I will help you, my son, but first you must have faith in me.” “Yes, yes, I trust you!” cried the man. “Let go of the branch,” boomed the voice. There was a long pause, and the man shouted up again, “IS THERE ANYONE ELSE UP THERE I COULD TALK TO?”

An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his situation: Dear Son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden because your mother always loved planting time. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren’t in prison. Love, Dad Shortly, the old man received this telegram: ‘For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden!! That’s where I buried the GUNS!!’

At 4 a.m. the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns. Linguistics
It comes with the job
A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped inches from a shop window. For a second, everything was quiet in the cab, then the driver said, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the living daylights out of me!” The passenger apologized and said, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replied, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver -- I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”

An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class the other day. “In English,” he said, “a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn’t a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative.” A voice from the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, right.”
Feeling your age
Two old men in a retirement village were sitting in the reading room and one said to the other, ‘’How do you really feel? I mean, you’re 72 years old, how do you honestly feel?’’ ‘’Honestly, I feel like a new born baby. I’ve got no hair, no teeth, and I just wet myself.’’

though its beginnings were in 1868 when land was set aside for a “City Park.” A master plan was created in the early 1900s when taxes were levied leading to water systems and roads being built. To promote San Diego’s commercial possibilities as the first U.S. port of call for ships transiting the Panama Canal, city leaders organized the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. It was then that City Park was renamed Balboa Park after the explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa. Almost four million people attended the Expo and it was such a hit that it was held over through 1916. During the two world wars, it was utilized for military purposes, e.g., training, hospitals and barracks, but always reverted to public use. Today, over 13 million visitors a year enjoy Balboa Park. Cont’d. from Page 11 Both Gilchrist ($1,258,000) and Wright ($781,000) ranked eighth and ninth, respectively. Although they had their troubles this past season, both provide solid, if not unspectacular play in defensive coordinator John Pagano’s system. Gilchrist finished second on the team with 76 tackles; tied for fourth with seven tackles for loss; had five passes defensed and forced two fumbles. Wright’s 60 tackles was sixth on the team and he tied Flowers for the team lead with 10 passes defensed. With reports Freeney is contemplating retirement and Jerret Johnson entering the final year of his contract ($7.5 million cap number), the time is now for the Chargers to make a big splash and sign a couple of high-impact players – remember the additions of linebackers Steve Foley and Randall Godfrey and their influence on the Chargers defense? The Bleacher Report’s Alessandro Miglio recently listed a number of players from each team who could become cap casualties as teams scramble to get under the 2015 cap. Below are two play-
ers (the first of whom is off Miglio’s list) who could come in and instantly improve the Chargers defense – one is from a division rival and the other is from the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks. The Kansas City Chiefs are $2 million over the cap but that number is expected to increase significantly by signing or franchise tagging star pass rusher Justin Houston who led the NFL with 22 sacks. Rumors have the Chiefs possibly releasing outside linebacker Tamba Hali to save $9 million in cap space. Imagine the Chargers’ defense in 2015 if Telesco can re-sign cornerback Brandon Flowers as well as Hali, his former teammate with the Chiefs. The 31-year-old Hali has posted 52.5 sacks since 2010. Having already locked-up three quarters of their starting secondary, the Seahawks could very well lose free agent cornerback Byron Maxwell. With speculation the ‘Hawks are going to sign quarterback Russell Wilson to a long-term deal and re-negotiate another contract with running back Marshawn Lynch, Maxwell might be the odd man out. If so, expect the 26-yearold Maxwell to get a major bump up

from the $673,363 he earned in 2014.
The Endzone
With the window of opportunity closing as the core group of key players get older, it’s time to restructure a few contracts to allow Telesco to assemble the kind of championship roster former GM A.J. Smith put together early in his tenure. The 2015 NFL salary cap is expected to be around $141 million to $144 million dollars (Altius Directory).
TRUTH
Cont’d. from Page 5 react by fretting that Muslims might be harmed by the backlash. 6) Only in America ... would they make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege, while they discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just ‘magically’ become American citizens. 5) Only in America ... could the people who believe in balancing the budget and sticking by the country’s Constitution be thought of as “extremists.”
4) Only in America ... could you need to present a driver’s license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote. 3) Only in America ... could people demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company (Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes (Nike). 2) Only in America ... could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a trillion dollars more than it has per year — for total spending of 7 million dollars PER MINUTE, and complain that it doesn’t have nearly enough money. And the No. 1 item on the stupidity list: 1) Only in America ... could the rich people — who pay 86 percent of all income taxes — be accused of not paying their “fair share” by people who don’t pay any income taxes at all. Although it comes under the heading of comedy, reading that list is certainly hurtful to some Americans. But, as so many of us learned from the grade school taunt: “Truth hurts, doesn’t it?”

A Day at the Bay
San Diego’s vibrant harbor is better than ever. It was my wife’s birthday and we kicked it off at The Hideaway, www.ExquisiteHideaway.com, at the waterfront Marriott Marquis & Marina. Their focus is on wellness services including massage, skin care and body treatments. Our choices were the hot stone and hot bamboo massages; both excellent. The Hideaway is just that; quiet and serene, a tucked away oasis. They also have mobile massage available. After our relaxing 90 minutes of pampering, we were off to lunch. Walking from The Hideaway to Anthony’s Fish Grotto, we were able to appreciate Phase One of the $30 million waterfront enhancements: new landscaping, a dramatic promenade, pavilions, plazas and public art. The iconic “Unconditional Surrender” was especially meaningful since we had recently seen a version at the Caen Museum (D-Day) in Normandy, France. “A National Salute to Bob Hope and the Military” is a grouping of sculptures of servicemen “listening” to an actual roadshow recording of Bob Hope’s monologue to the troops. Logon to www.portofsandiego.org/thebigbay for more. The affable Craig Ghio, co-owner and executive chef of Anthony’s, is also celebrating a centennial. His grandfather moved to San Diego 100 years ago. A fixture on the bay, Anthony’s features an extensive menu; my choice was the salmon reuben accompanied by a Caesar salad. My wife opted for the roasted vegetable flatbread, paired with a qui-
noa salad; both meals were perfectly prepared. Anthony’s has earned a long, well deserved run in San Diego’s food scene. Logon to www.gofishanthonys. com for reservations. Safe travels and enjoy the journey…. (Thanks to various organizations and online sites for information.)

Then he lost it all again six months later. • Steven Russell escaped from prison by using laxatives to take the symptoms of AIDS. He then called the prison, posing as a doctor, asking for prisoners interested in experimental treatment, and volunteered. Once out of Texas, he sent death certificates to the prison stating he had died. • Kids Wish Foundation (not to be confused with the reputable Make-AWish Foundation) was named America’s worst charity. GI BILL
Cont’d. from Page 8 still small. Now, you can write to your Congressman or local newspaper or start a phone tree and try to influence whether this recommendation becomes law, but I also want you to think about what your family will do if the Post 9/11 GI Bill does not exist in its current form when your family wants to use it. It doesn’t have to be a specific, dollar for dollar plan, but at least get the brain train moving. Are you counting on the Post 9/11 GI Bill to fund a significant chunk of your family’s higher education costs? Well, it might not be available to pay for as much as you planned.

Cont’d. from Page 10 Upon arrival in Manila, we embarked on an embassy tour coordinated by press attaché Kurt Hoyer. The embassy is an unbelievable historic building. We were able to film as we went along and it was indeed enjoyable. The next day proved to be quite emotional as we took the two-hour drive to Bataan. Over 25,000 Filipinos along with 9,000 Americans were killed during this unthinkable brutality of the Japanese Imperial Army. It’s difficult to understand how anyone survived this insanity. The two monuments for the Americans and the Filipinos were indeed impressive and very emotional. Mr. Cooper broke down mentally and spiritually upon being confronted with the thousands of his fellow countryman engraved on the Bataan Memorial. The next day proved to be equally dramatic as we headed down the actual Bataan highway where 70 years before man’s inhumanity to man was on a scale never seen before. As we made are way to Mount Summit, a Statue of Liberty-sized white granite cross awaited us as it has await-

ed millions of others since 1970 when it was erected to commemorate the memory of the thousands who died on the Bataan Death March. Mr. Cooper made his way to the top with a great deal of fanfare where he was mobbed by the local school children that were on site on an apparent field trip. To meet an actual WWII veteran was quite a memorable experience for these young Filipinos. It might has well have been General MacArthur himself! Our next stop was Corregidor. General MacArthur had been on Corregidor for several years along with 20,000 plus Army personnel. A tunnel and cave system were in place and this is where the term “dugout” came from. Unconfirmed rumors were that the term may have been because when MacArthur was on the West Point baseball team, he was in the dugout most of the time. The American barracks, still intact 70 years later, were bombed heavily. They are a ghostly reminder of a fierce battle long ago. We spent seven hours on “the rockm” then made our way back to the Manila Hotel. The MacArthur suite at the Manila

Hotel is as legendary as it is expensive. The hotel was bombed extensively, and the suite has been duplicated on the same floor as the original. Many of MacArthur’s medals, paintings and other memorabilia adorn the walls. The uniqueness of this $4,000 a night suite is a one of a kind and a must while in Manila. We then spent two the hottest and most humid hours of my life taking Leon around the cemetery and getting some amazing shots and narration for the documentary. I am not sure how Leon did this? It was quite remarkable. He did it with the fervor and passion of a man half his age, I applaud you, Leon Cooper. You are a great American and the last WWII veteran in the fight!! Our new film, Return to the Philippines is intended for premiere and distribution on Memorial 2015.
WARRIORS
Cont’d. from Page 3 all women who wish to be part of the Ranger Course Assessment. The course is designed to improve the combat arms functional skills of officer and enlisted volunteers. It assesses eligible
Army active duty, National Guard and foreign military soldiers on their ability to meet the challenges of Ranger School. How female students will fare remains to be seen, but past studies have indicated they are likely more often to sustain injuries associated with combat training and combat than their male counterparts. Historically, more than half of the soldiers who complete RTAC will successfully complete Ranger School, according to the release. RTAC instructors were “impressed with the level of physical fitness and dedication of the majority of female volunteers,” Lt. Col. Edmund “Beau” Riely, commander of ARNG Warrior Training Center, said in the release. The two-week long RTAC consists of two phases. The first phase mirrors the assessment phase at Ranger School and is designed to assess a soldier’s physical and mental abilities. During this phase, a student conducts a PT test, a swim test, land navigation, and a 6-mile foot march. The second phase of RTAC is a field training exercise. It’s designed to train soldiers on troop-leading procedures and patrolling, skills which will be used extensively during Ranger School.
