VETERANS DAY 2019 Veterans contribute to American society in many ways; not just during their time in active duty. Throughout our history, military service members have put on their uniforms to protect the values and liberties that this nation was built on. But that doesn’t stop once the uniform comes off and
their time in active duty has ended. Veterans take the lessons they have learned and the experiences they’ve gained and continue their service to our nation by strengthening our communities. They become our nation’s leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs. Veterans are the most active volunteers working to improve communities across our country. Service goes beyond the uniform. This Veteran’s Day, we honor the men and women who have worn their uniform who continue to serve our country. Veterans day will be on Monday, November 11th, 2019. As a federal holiday Veterans Day is typically observed on November 11th every year. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated
as the Federal holiday, and if it occurs on a Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be designated. In times when the observance falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is designated as the Federal holiday. For years when the 11th is on a Saturday, either Friday or Saturday may be designated as the Federal recognition of Veterans Day.
WHY WERE VIETNAM WAR VETS TREATED POORLY WHEN THEY RETURNED American soldiers returning home from Vietnam often faced scorn as the war they had fought in became increasingly unpopular. The Vietnam War claimed the lives of more than 58,000 American service mem-
bers and wounded more than 150,000. And for the men who served in Vietnam and survived unspeakable horrors, coming home offered its own kind of trauma. Vietnam veterans were met with none of the fanfare and received none of the benefits bestowed upon World War II’s “greatest generation.” Vietnam War lasted from 1964-1973—the longest war in American history until it was overtaken by the one in Afghanistan—and servicemen typically did one-year tours of duty. Unlike conflicts with massive demobilizations, men came back from Vietnam by themselves rather than with their units or companies. For a decade, as one person
was shipped off to fight, another was returning. As the war ground on and became increasingly hopeless, the military personnel put through this kind of revolving door of service came to represent something many Americans would rather not accept: defeat. “Vietnam was a lost war, and it was the first major lost war abroad in American history,” “For the family whose son is just coming back, you aren’t going to have a public welcoming home ceremony when someone’s son just down the road was just sent off to Vietnam.” GI benefits were lacking. Celebrations aside, the government also failed to make good on its promises to those who served. Veterans returning from Vietnam were met with an institutional response marked by indifference. Back in the States, the GI benefits available for Vietnam veterans “were almost nonexistent.” While living in New York, a Vietnam vet developed symptoms of malaria—a tropical disease fairly uncommon in the concrete jungle—yet he was denied VA health care because he

didn’t display those symptoms in Vietnam. “The society really was illprepared to give these guys what they deserved,” “They were not necessarily looking for a parade, but they were certainly looking for basic human support and help in readjusting to civilian life after this really brutal war.” Part of the reason was economic. While the economy after World War II was one of the most robust in American history, during and after Vietnam the nation was in a death spiral of stagflation and economic malaise. And as more and more wartime atrocities came to light, there was a national implication of guilt and shame placed on Vietnam veterans as participants in and avatars of a brutal, unsuccessful war. In popular culture, the stereotype of the broken, homeless Vietnam vet began to take hold thanks to films like The Deer Hunter (1978), Coming Home (1978) and First Blood (1982). The Gulf War saw a shift in attitudes. It would take nearly 20 years after the end of the war for America to get right with its Vietnam veterans. The dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982 began the process, but many identify the Gulf War of 1990-91—with its national flag-waving,
yellow-ribbon cultural mobilization and
the grand celebrations of a successful campaign—as ending Vietnam Syndrome. “The Vietnam veterans, couldn’t believe that they finally were getting recognition ,they couldn’t believe that people were cheering for them. Since 9/11, patriotic gestures, like wearing flag pins and saying, “Thank you for your service,” have become common, as more troops are sent to Iraq and Afghanistan. But the specter of Vietnam still lingers, and some of that war’s veterans view such acts with a wary glance. (We realize that National Vietnam War Veterans Day is a US holiday observed annually on March 29. It recognizes veterans who served in the US military during the Vietnam War. It should not be confused with Veterans Day.) but with an estimated 390 Vietnam Veterans passing each day there will be few, if any alive in just 10 years” so a little more recognition won’t hurt ! CHARGERS REPORT: MELVIN GORDON STRUGGLES lost 23-20 to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and Gordon fumbled at the Tennessee 1-yard line with 19 seconds left to seal the Titans’ victory.
Gordon expanded on the pressure he has felt because of his decision to skip training camp:
Melvin Gordon III didn’t get what he wanted by holding out from the Los Angeles Chargers through Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season, but he did learn something.
In Gordon’s absence, Austin Ekeler took over. The 24-year-old has only 13 carries for 28 yards since Gordon rejoined the backfield after having 56 for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the first four outings.
“I know I won’t miss another training camp again, I can tell you that,” Gordon said Monday, according to Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times. “But if I was to go back, I can’t say. Just with the running back thing and all that, we want to get paid, you know. I don’t know. That’s tough.” Gordon returned to the Chargers without the new deal he was seeking, and the 26-year-old may be losing himself future money given the way he has performed since coming back. The two-time Pro Bowler played for the first time in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos, and L.A. is 0-3 since his arrival. Most recently, the Chargers
your teammates, ‘I’m still the guy. I’m that guy. I could do this. I could put the team on my back,’ and things like that. So when you go out there and you don’t make a play, it’s not that they feel different, but it’s just a pride thing.”
Head coach Anthony Lynn’s decision to immediately make Gordon the primary back has drawn criticism and three straight losses for the Chargers.
Overall, the 15th overall pick from the 2015 NFL draft has just 81 yards and no touchdowns on 36 carries, as well as 34 yards and one score on nine catches.
“Missing training camp and not being here, every play you want to be perfect. I missed four games, whatever the case may be, and it’s like you want to come out here and you want to show
Gordon, who posted 885 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground last year, had much more leverage during his holdout than he does now, and he didn’t get what he was requesting. Unless he kicks into another gear, the odds will be even less in his favor once he becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season.

SCANDALS Sharon Tate
There is much more about Sharon Tate than her murder by Charley Manson. There are the bleak secrets of the small-town beauty pageant winner exploited by the free love, drug and sex-obsessed Hollywood machine of the Sixties. Sharon was not prepared for the harsh, male-dominated world of movies but her beauty was destined for the big screen. Sharon did as she was told before hooking up with The Great Escape actor Steve McQueen, then falling for kinky celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring. She met Roman Polanski after she broke it off with Jay. Polanski and Sharon met in London, where they were both working, and took hallucinogenic drugs together. According to one biography, the actress was frequently cheated on by orgy-loving Polanski, who also pushed her into threesomes and homemade sex videos.
Robert Mitchum On August 31, 1948, Robert Mitchum was toking up with local realtor Robin Ford, actress Lila Leeds and dancer Vickie Evans at a house rented by Evans and Leeds when the cops came busting in the door -- arresting the four. Immediately, Mitchum and Evans cried foul and called the whole thing a setup. It looked like one: By the time they arrived at the police station, reporters were already swarming. Mitchum was defiant, telling the press

NEW TMS FACILITY IN DEL MAR Harvey Weinstein
Del Mar Brain and TMS in conjunction with KMG Psychiatry, Dr. Ankur Bindal and Dr. Raphael Morris announce the opening of their TMS facility in Del Mar.
Whether producing “The Artist,” “Shakespeare in Love” or “The English Patient,” Queens-born serial predator Harvey Weinstein has always had a knack for making powerful period pictures. Maybe, between the best picture Oscars that those movies scored, he should have brushed up on his Hollywood history. His penchant for the casting couch — the practice of powerful white men exploiting young actresses trying to break into the movie business — has a historical precedent as old as the movie business itself. “The perils for women in Hollywood are embedded, like land mines, from an actress’s debut to her swan song,” says film critic and historian Carrie Rickey, “where moguls like Harry Cohn reputedly wouldn’t cast starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Kim Novak unless they auditioned in bed.”
Tippi Hedren and Alfred Hitchcock Tippi Hedren says Hitchcock sexually assaulted her. In her new memoir, actress Tippi Hedren is revealing what a true horror it was working with Alfred Hitchcock on the 1960s films The Birds and Marnie. She writes that the iconic director, who she says was “obsessed” with her, sexually assaulted her.
Psychiatry evaluations and TMS treatments performed under the guidance of board certified psychiatrists and neurologists.

By Howard Hian There’s nothing better than a quick getaway destination with good food, amenities galore, reasonable rates, and a casino. Since I had read about Pechanga’s $300 million expansion last year, I decided to give it a try. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t disappointed. HISTORY The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians has called the Temecula Valley home for more than 10,000 years. Their current history, like most other California tribal units, is rife with the dismal results of America’s Manifest Destiny and the activities of the Spanish Missionaries. The Great Oak, located on their land, is “one
PECHANGA RESORT CASINO of the largest natural-growing, indigenous coast, live oak trees in the United States and estimated to be anywhere from 850 to 1,500 years old.” It is symbolic of the Pechanga Band…“strength, wisdom, longevity and determination.” THE RESORT The AAA Four Diamond award-winning Pechanga Resort Casino is a short drive north from San Diego, in the wine country of Temecula. Their expansion includes new luxury guest rooms and suites, meeting and event space, new restaurants, and an exceptional day spa. GAMING For me, the casino is the crown jewel of the place. It has more than 4,500 state-of-the-art slot machines, over 150 table games, a 24 hour non-smoking poker room, off track betting lounge, high limit play area, and a 700 seat hitech bingo parlor. Make sure you sign up for the Player’s Club (there’s a free slot spin for joining). I played in a Hold ‘em tournament and was surprised to see about 100 players on a Tuesday morning.
Although knocked out 1.5 hours later, it was satisfying to compete. The service personnel were attentive and the dealers and floor managers set a professional atmosphere. Don’t worry. There’s still plenty to keep you and your family busy besides gambling. HUNGRY There are 15 restaurants to choose from, ranging from the award winning Great Oak Steak House to the pastries and snacks in the food court. Other options include, Asian, Italian, burgers, plus an award winning buffet. During my stay, I ate at Kelsey’s, Paisano’s, Bamboo and Journey’s End; all easy to recommend. I picked up my morning java jolt at either Blends Coffee & Wine Bar or Temptations Food Court, both featuring homemade baked goods and snacks.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE Outdoors - There’s golf at Pechanga’s Journey, a 7,219-yard, par 72, 18 hole championship course. Walk or hike their 5 mile trail. Visit the new 4.5 acre Cove featuring three pools, swim up bar, food service, two waterslides, plus cabanas and day beds to rent. Entertainment - Pechanga Theater and their Summit feature A-list performers and concerts. Other venues include a Comedy Club, Casino Cabaret, Eagle’s Nest, plus live championship boxing, MMA, and Mua Thai (martial arts). Travels with Hian, continued on Page 11

dent and prays that a sales person doesn’t pop up right now. As she turns around, her worst nightmare materializes in the form of a salesman standing right behind her.
Just for Laughs
Cool as a cucumber and displaying complete professionalism, the salesman greets the lady with, “Good day, Madam How may we help you today?” Very uncomfortably but hoping that the salesman may not have been there at the time of her little “accident!” she asks, “Sir, what is the price of this lovely bracelet?” He answers, “Madam, if you farted just looking at it, you’re going to s@!t when I tell you the price.”
JUST LAUGH
There are two types of people in the world. Those who love dirty jokes, and those who are lying. Oh come on, you can admit it. Not all jokes need to be family friendly and G-rated. Some of the most beautifully crafted, genuinely laugh-out-loud adult dirty jokes are so jaw-droppingly filthy that you’d feel a little weird even sharing them with a consenting adult at a bar after midnight. But share them we must, because there’s something about repeating raunchy jokes that make us feel more alive. It’s the same adrenaline rush you get from riding a roller coaster. You scream with terror even though you know you’re perfectly safe. It’s the same with really great dirty jokes. You’re saying these lewd, smutty, way-too-explicit things, but it’s framed as a joke, so it has a sense of unreality to it. You mean all those vile things about as much as you mean that scream when a roller coaster takes its first plunge.

BULL
A man took his wife to the rodeo and one of the first exhibits they stopped at was the breeding bulls. They went up to the first pen and there was a sign attached that said, “This bull mated 50 times last year.” The wife playfully nudged her husband in the ribs and said, “He mated 50 times last year.” They walked to the second pen which had a sign attached that said, “This bull mated 120 times last year. ” The wife gave her husband a healthy jab and said, “That’s more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him.” They walked to the third pen and it had a sign attached that said, in capital letters, “This bull mated 365 times last year.” The wife, so excited that her elbow nearly broke her husband’s rib, said, “That’s once
a day. You could REALLY learn something from this one.” The husband looked at her and said, “Go over and ask him if it was with the same cow.”
SOFT SERVE
A manager hired a new secretary. She was young, sweet and polite. One day while taking dictation, she noticed his fly was open. While leaving the room, she courteously said, “Oh, sir, did you know that your barracks door is open?” He did not understand her remark, but later on he happened to look down and saw that his zipper was open. He decided to have some fun with his new employee. Calling her in, he asked, “By the way, Miss Jones, when you saw my barracks door open this morning, did you also see a soldier standing at attention?” The secretary, who was quite witty,
FISHING
A Steve and his buddies were hanging out and planning an upcoming fishing trip. Unfortunately, he had to tell them that he couldn’t go this time because his wife wouldn’t let him. After a lot of teasing and name calling, Steve headed home frustrated. The following week when Steve’s buddies arrived at the lake to set up camp, they were shocked to see Steve. He was already sitting at the campground with a cold beer, swag rolled out, fishing rod in hand, and a camp fire glowing. “How did you talk your missus into letting you go Steve?” “I didn’t have to,” Steve replied. “Yesterday, when I left work, I went home and slumped down in my chair with a beer to drown my sorrows because I couldn’t go fishing. Then the ol‘ lady snuck up behind me and covered my eyes and said, ‘Surprise’. When I peeled her hands back, she was standing there in a beautiful see-through negligee and she said, ‘Carry me into the bedroom, tie me to the bed and you can do whatever you want,’ So, Here I am!”
FUWWY WABBY
replied, “Why, no sir. all I saw was a little, disabled veteran, sitting on two duffel bags!”
A precious little girl walks into a pet shop and asks in the sweetest little lisp, “Excuthe me, mithter, do you keep widdle wabbits?” As the shopkeeper’s heart melts, he gets down on his knees, so that he’s on her level, and asks, “Do you want a widdle white wabby or a thoft and fuwwy back wabby or maybe one like that cute widdle bwown wabby over there?” She, in turn blushes, rocks on her heels, puts her hands on her knees, leans forward and says in a quiet, cutest little voice, “I don’t fink my pet python weally gives a thit.”
