MILITARY WORKING DOGS

O

ne of the reasons Belgian Malinois are favored over German Shepherd Dogs for many military operations is that Malinois are better skydivers. Malinois are lighter than German Shepherds, so it’s easier for military parachutists to do tandem jumps with their dogs strapped to them. The Belgian Malinois is preferred by US Navy Seals because the breed, while similar to German Shepherds, is smaller and more compact. The Malinois is better suited for tandem parachute jumping or rappelling. During the 2013 raid on Osama Bin Laden, aMalinois named Cairo was with the Navy Seal team. Famous for protecting livestock, the Belgian Malinois is now known for protecting man. Joint base San Antonio–Lackland is known as the hub for US military working dog training for all the Armed Forces. The mission of the 341 1st training squadron is to provide trained military working dogs and handlers for the department of

defense, and other government agencies and allies through training, logistics, veterinary support and research and development for security efforts worldwide. The military consider them invaluable equipment, they even have service numbers tattooed inside their ears. . An officer at Lackland Air Force Base in the dog training division said the dogs were as well trained as any , which dog wins as the coolest breed of the day may still be up for debate, but in terms of smart, the odds are heavily stacked in the Belgians favor. A few months ago the dog survived a home fire by opening four doors in a home, then hiding in a basement bathtub that was filled with water from firefighters hose. The dog’s sense of smell is far better than humans sight and they have been trained to go into a burning home and find people in smoke-filled rooms. A type of scent detection dog was introduced in 2005 within the Department of Defense inventory

to augment the existing Explosive Detector Dogs (EDDs). Due to the increase in the number of homemade or improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Specialized Search Dogs (SSDs) are now able to detect both conventional and homemade arms and explosives. These dogs primarily work off-leash and under voice command of their handlers. Scent detection military dogs hone their skills by performing searches of explosives in areas such as vehicles, barracks, and aircraft.

exposed to gunfire, traffic and other distractions to increase their effectiveness. ... Dogs trained for military use as attack dogs, most often called patrol dogs, can be trained to perform explosives detection as well.

How much is a Navy SEAL dog worth?

Personal protection dogs, also known as PPDs, are definitely not trained by Cesar Millan; that’s a job for former Navy Seal Mike Ritland, who formed his company Trikos International after serving for 12 years as a SEAL, according to Town and Country. He said switching from teaching humans to dogs came naturally to him and that he prefers to work with three breeds: Belgian Malinois,German and Dutch Sheperds

When they’re fully trained, they don’t come cheap — it costs between $55,000 and $100,000 for a PPD, but they’re perfect for celebrities and private individuals who may have security concerns. Are military dogs trained to kill? In formal training, the dogs are

Every military working dog is an NCO - in tradition at least. Some say the custom was to prevent handlers from mistreating their dogs; hence, a dog is always one rank higher than its handler. “That’s out of respect,”

Mortgage rates forecast for July 2020

if the economy recovers faster than expected. Why not grab an all-timelow rate while it’s available?

Predictions for July

July will be a wild ride for mortgage Mortgage rates have fallen to a new rates. In short, our prediction is that all-time low. rates are headed downward, with

SDHEROESREALTY.COM

N OWN E D A N A R E T E V After touching a record 3.29% in early March, the 30-year fixedrate average dipped to just 3.13% in June, according to Freddie Mac. The coronavirus pandemic is suppressing interest rates like few things before it. Rates this low were once unimaginable. Mortgages have averaged around 8% over the last 50 years. If this is your first time buying or refinancing, now you know why the older generation still can’t believe these near-3% rates. Will interest rates go lower? They might. But they could also shoot up

averages finally dropping below 3% for the first time ever by July or August. That being said, the real world has a way of bucking expectations. Fortunately, there’s no reason to bet on lower rates. As this is written, Freddie Mac reports a 3.13% average. That’s the lowest since Freddie Mac started tracking data in 1971. So today’s mortgage rates are literally the best they’ve ever been. The bottom line is that rates could go lower in July 2020, but why would someone gamble when they could capture a best-ever rate right now?

Life was so much better in the 50s 60s 70s and 80s when we were young. Those were the good ole days … things were safer, simpler, even sexier back then (perhaps based on the theory that less is more). Entertainers entertained and entertainment was so simple all you had to do was look and listen and you didn’t have to sort thru a bunch of meanings to figure out what you were hearing or watching . It seems like just yesterday when we were in high school the top seven discipline problems were

“talking, chewing gum, making noise, getting out of turn in line, wearing improper clothes and God forbid smoking or skipping class . Life for sure was different back in the good ole days. We got married first, then slept together, and mind you, not in the same bed, at least never on TV or at the drive-in movies . Back then you respected your parents , your elders and the girls you dated . Service stations had service. Fast food wasn’t that fast. “Made in Japan” meant junk, and “making out” referred

to how you did on your algebra exam. Those days, a quarter would buy you a ride on the streetcar, make a phone call, buy a Pepsi or enough stamps to mail one letter and 2 postcards and gas was less than a dollar per gallon. The good ole days when you were a kid meant climbing trees, cowboys ‘n’ Indians, chocolate milk, sucking on ice chips just cut by the iceman, licking Mom’s mixer beaters, and catching lightening bugs in a jar. How things have changed over the last 50 years or so. It’s getting

so bad now a lot of people won’t watch the news on television any more. Back then , when Walter Cronkite gave you the news you trust him because it was news and not his opinions. We now have little or no faith in the news on any of the major or minor TV networks . Regardless of all the problems we are now facing , don’t let anyone mislead you, the majority of Americans still believe America is still the greatest country in the world !

Zion Williamson Is ‘Going to Shock Some People’ BY TIM DANIELS New Orleans Pelicans rookie sensation Zion Williamson was off to a terrific start to his NBA career before the 2019-20 season was halted in March by the coronavirus pandemic, and one member of the organization is expecting big things with the campaign scheduled to restart in July. “He’s going to shock some people,” An Eastern Conference executive added the league is probably hoping the Pelicans are able to secure the No. 8 seed in the West to set up a likely matchup between Williamson and LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers in the opening round of the playoffs. “[Williamson is] a guy that drives eyeballs and attention,” the exec told

ESPN. “[The NBA] would love to have a Michael Jordan versus the ‘86Celtics moment in the first round. If they could get their ideal world, that’s what they would want.” The 19-year-old Duke product didn’t make his NBA debut until Jan. 22, three months into the regular season, after undergoing knee surgery in October. “Zion has been diligent about taking care of himself,” said David Griffin, the Pelicans’ executive vice president of basketball operations, per Bontemps and Lopez. “He’s in a good space physically and mentally.” He quickly established himself as a highimpact budding superstar upon his return. He averaged 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 58.9 percent from the field across 19 appearances. He ranked 13th in the NBA in Player Efficiency

Rating, per ESPN. In April, Williamson told TNT’s Ernie Johnson (via CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish) he was disappointed in the timing of the suspension of play because of COVID-19, but he was hopeful the additional downtime would ultimately be a positive. “It sucks because I had just come back after sitting three, four months without playing basketball or playing in an NBA game,” he said. “As soon as I felt like I was getting going, this happens. It sucks from that perspective. But I think it’s a good thing because it gives me extra time to work on my knee and work on my body overall.” The Pelicans have the talent to become a dangerous team should they qualify for the postseason. They’ll enter the restart with a 2836 record, 3.5 games behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the final playoff berth in the conference. It’s a crowded race with the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns also in the mix.

But New Orleans’ core of Williamson, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday, paired with a supporting cast led by JJ Redick, Derrick Favors and Josh Hart, gives the team the skill and depth necessary to make some serious noise at the Disney World complex in Orlando, Florida. “Those reps against the best players on a bigger stage will be meaningful for Zion certainly as a 19-year-old,” Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin told ESPN. “I think it’s important for those guys to play some meaningfulslash-playoff basketball.” Even if the Pelicans fall short during the whirlwind eight-game finish to the regular season and potential playin tournament, the future is bright with Williamson leading the charge.

JUST FOR LAUGHS handcuffs on him.”

THE YOUNG PRIEST

The man asks, “What do I do with the shotgun?”

The young Priest ,at his first mass was so scared that he could hardly speak. So before his second week in the pulpit he asked the Monsignor ( a old veteran of this work) “How can I relax. The Monsignor said “ My son, this sunday it might help if you put some martinis in the water pitcher instead of water and after a few sips , everything should go smoother!

The service guy replies, “If I fall out of the tree before the gorilla, shoot the Chihuahua.”

NO BULL A man takes his wife to the stock show. They start heading down the alley that had the bulls. They come up to the first bull and his sign stated: “This bull mated 50 times last year.”

So Sunday came and the young priest did as suggested and he really talked up a storm. after the mass he asked the old veteran how he had done. The Monsignor replied “ Just fine except there are a few you things you need to get straight before your next mass! 1.Next time ,sip the martini rather than gulping it down by the glassfull. 2.There are 10 Commandments, not twelve. 3.there are 12 disciples, not 10. 4.david slew Goliath; he didn’t kick the shit out of him. 5.We don’t refer to our Savior Jesus Christ and his disciples as “J.C. and The Boys. 6. WE don’t refer to the cross as the “BIG T”. 7. We don’t refer to the Father,Son abd the Holy Ghost , as Big Daddy, Junior and Casper 8.Next Sunday there is a taffy pull at St. Peters Church, not a peter pulling at St Taffys! 9.The idea of a drive-in confessional is excellent, but the sign “Toot & Tell or Go To Hell” has to go. 10. Last but not least, we say Our Father … not ya know “The Old Man “

THE DIRTY BIRD A woman was thinking about finding a pet to help keep her company at home. She decided she would like to find a beautiful parrot; it wouldn’t 10 July July 1,1, 2020 2020

The wife turns to her husband and says, “He mated 50 times in a year, you could learn from him.” be as much work as say a dog, and it would be fun to hear it speak. She went to a pet shop and immediately spotted a large beautiful parrot. She went to the owner of the store and asked how much. The owner said it was $50. Delighted that such a rare looking and beautiful bird wasn’t more expensive, she agreed to buy it. The owner looked at her and said, “Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of ill repute. Sometimes it says pretty off color stuff.” The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird. She said she would buy it anyway. The pet shop owner sold her the bird and she took it home. She hung the bird’s cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, “New house, new madam.” The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought that’s not so bad.” A couple hours later, the woman’s two teenage daughters returned from school. When they inspected the bird, it looked at them and said, “New house, new madam, new prostitutes.”

The girls and the woman were a bit offended at first, but than began to laugh about the situation. A couple of hours later, the woman’s husband came home from work. The bird looked at him and said,

They proceed to the next bull and his sign stated: “This bull mated 65 times last year.” The wife turns to her husband and says, “This one mated 65 times last year. That is over 5 times a month. You can learn from this one, also.”

“New house, new madam, new prostitutes; same old faces. Hi George!”

They proceeded to the last bull and his sign said: “This bull mated 365 times last year.”

REMOVAL SERVICE

The wife’s mouth drops open and says, “WOW! He mated 365 times last year. That is ONCE A DAY!!! You could really learn from this one.”

This guy wakes up one morning to find a gorilla in his tree. He looks in the phone book for a gorilla removal service until he finds one. “Is it a boy or girl Gorilla?” the service guy asks.

The man turns to his wife and says, “Go up and ask if it was 365 times with the same cow.”

“Boy,” is the man’s response. “Oh yeah, I can do it. I’ll be right there”, says the service guy. An hour later the service guy shows up with a stick, a Chihuahua, a shotgun, and a pair of handcuffs. He then gives the man some instructions: “Now, I’m going to climb this tree and poke the gorilla with the stick until he falls. When he does, the trained Chihuahua will bite the gorilla’s testicles off. The gorilla will then cross his hands to protect himself and allow you to put the

COVID-19 What Progress Are We Making There are a significant number of studies underway into potential treatments for Covid-19. And some progress has been made in the search for effective medicines. More than 150 different drugs are being researched around the world. Most are existing drugs that are being trialled against the virus.

What are the most promising coronavirus drugs? Dexamethasone, the first drug shown to save the lives of people with Covid-19, has been hailed as a breakthrough. Initial findings showed the low-cost steroid cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators and a fifth for those on oxygen. Coronavirus infection triggers inflammation as the body tries to fight it off. This can prompt the immune system to go into overdrive, and it’s this reaction that can prove fatal. Dexamethasone damps down this response. What is dexamethasone and how does it work? Clinical trials of remdesivir, an antiviral drug originally developed to treat Ebola, have also been encouraging.

Can malaria drugs stop coronavirus? Chloroquine, and a related derivative, hydroxychloroquine, may have antiviral and immune-calming properties. The drugs have been thrust into the spotlight as potential coronavirus therapies, largely because of claims made by President Trump, but there is still scant evidence on their effectiveness. Hydroxychloroquine is also used as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, because it can help regulate the immune system..
