s migrants stream from Central America, through Mexico, toward the southern U.S. border, media coverage focuses only on plight of poor refugees seeking a better life in America. The health of the refugees is never discussed. Are any of them carrying contagious diseases? If so, how many of them and what are they bringing to the U.S.?
The Centers for Disease Control provides the answer. Studies have identified the importance of cross-border movement in the transmission of various diseases, including HIV, measles, pertussis, rubella, rabies, hepatitis A, influenza, tuberculosis, shigellosis, syphilis, Mycobacterium bovis infection, brucellosis, and food-borne diseases, such as infections associated with raw cheese and produce.
These are all contagious diseases and relatively uncommon in the U.S. Fox News reports, “One-third of migrants in caravan are being treated for health issues,” including HIV/AIDS, TB, chickenpox, and lice. Apart from the diseases above making a resurgence in the U.S., a new one called acute flaccid myelitis, thought to be caused by a virus, is currently in the news. This is a polio-like illness

causing permanent arm and leg weakness in children. Polio has been largely eradicated, but now American children are becoming infected. Could it be related to the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants entering the U.S.? The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons suggests a solution, seemingly obvious except to politicians more interested in scoring political
points and damaging President Trump than actually protecting their constituents, the American people. The remedy is simple. In the past, waves of immigrants from Europe were stopped at Ellis Island, medically examined, and quarantined long enough to be sure they were not incubating a contagious disease. Procedures are less rigorous today, and of course those who enter illegally are not screened at all. America, once upon a time, was adept at admitting and processing immigrants with potential contagious diseases. Why not look to our experience a century ago at Ellis Island? One website chronicled this process from the Swedish perspective. Unlike our current porous border where immigrants are welcomed with a red carpet of social welfare benefits, Ellis Island immigration was quite strict. “To arrive to New York and Ellis Island didn’t mean that you knew if you could stay or not in the new country. In front of them waited strenuous and time-consuming controls.” Inspectors boarded the arriving ships checking for, “Any contagious diseases such as cholera, plague, typhoid, measles and diphtheria.” Those infected wouldn’t be allowed off the ship. Next came the medical examination where, “The doctors viewed them from above to watch after weakness, heavy breathing (indication of heart problems) and other signs of mental disturbances.” Then they went to the eye doctor. “They searched for a disease in the eyes called trachoma. This eye disease
causes blindness and it can also lead to death.” If they had trachoma, “The immigrant was sent back home again.” Medical screening served a purpose. Not only did it keep contagious diseases out of America, but it also prevented the medical burden caring for immigrants who required hospitalization or treatment. Put simply, “If they had other diseases and these were confirmed or if the immigrant was too sick and too weak to manage to work, they were not allowed to enter to the US.” What a novel idea. How many other countries allow sick people to immigrate? From one country’s immigration website, “People coming to Australia have health checks before entering the country as another way to prevent further infectious diseases.” Children didn’t get special treatment
or consideration as they do now. Sick children from 12 years old or older were sent back by themselves to their home harbor. Children under 12 years old that were not allowed to stay in the US were forced to go back with one parent. Many tears were dropped when the parents should decide which parent that should stay and which parent that should go back with the sick child. So much for the media chorus that Trump is the only president to separate immigrant children from their parents. Those who passed their medical evaluations were not yet home free. Another inspector awaited them who made a determination whether, “That the person could take care of himself and fulfill the demands to be able to stay in the US.” Another concept that most countries use in evaluating potential immigrants — self-sufficiency rather than a burden on taxpayers. As one country states on their website, “We all expect each other to contribute to and share in Australia’s wealth.” This is particularly relevant with the recent report that 63 percent of noncitizens in the U.S. are on welfare, 4.6
By Brian C. Joondeph million households. Ellis Island scrutiny aimed to prevent this. In addition, inspectors had to weed out the bad apples, “They should also determine if the person was a danger to the society.” Each inspector had only a few minutes to make their assessment. “If there were any hesitations the immigrant had to stay at Ellis Island for further investigation.” Another novel concept -- not admitting known criminals or troublemakers. How many other countries have similar restrictions? From the New Zealand immigration website, “To show you are of good character, you may need to provide us with police certificates.” After passing the multipoint inspection, they were given a “landing card”. Then they were free to enter America. “After approval it was time to leave the island and continue to the final destination.” What a simple and logical approach. Despite the technological advances over the past century, sometimes the tried and true ways of the past are still best. Unfortunately, politicians of both parties have no interest in a strong national border or scrutinizing who enters and stays in our country. The open borders elites don’t have to live with the consequences of their lax immigration enforcement. Illegal immigrants don’t live in their neighborhoods or attend their children’s fancy private schools. It’s everyone else who lives with the crime and disease.
Ellis Island was from a simpler time but effectively handled immigrants arriving in America. Some say the future proves the past. Why not bring back a successful past process, proven to work, leading to a safer future for America? Time to resurrect some Ellis Island common sense.

DEFENDING ASSULT SHIPS ON THE SEAS

s sailors and Marines are sailing in more contested waters, the blue-green team is getting creative about how to defend amphibious assault ships from enemy small boats and drones. Members of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit were photographed sailing through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf this week with a Light Armored Vehicle on the flight deck. The armored vehicle can be seen in the background of photos
released by the Marine Corps on Wednesday, showing AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters flying off the amphibious assault ship Boxer. Sailing through or near the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that runs between the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, has been contentious in recent months. Marines have put an LAV on an amphib flight deck in another disputed waterway. In September, members of the 31st MEU parked an LAV on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship Wasp during a training exercise in the South China Sea, Marine Corps Times reported last year. The MEU’s weapons company fired the LAV’s M242 chain guns and coaxial M240C medium machine guns at simulated targets in the ocean during the exercise, the paper reported, which was meant to prep sailors and Marines for transiting through

dangerous waters. This isn’t the first time the 11th MEU has turned to a land vehicles to defend the Boxer. Marines were able to take down the Iranian drone last month by using a weapon system that fits onto a pair of
small MRZR all-terrain vehicles. The system is equipped with high-power sensors and jamming technology, which the Marines used when the drone got too close to the ship.

NFL, NBA & MLB UPDATES, STATS + MORE Expectations are running high for a Chargers team coming off their most successful season since 2009 and their first playoff appearance since 2013. Having seven players selected to the Pro Bowl last season (tops in the NFL), the Chargers are considered among the elite teams in the AFC and a serious challenger to supplant the Chiefs as the division champions in the AFC West. Prior to training camps opening, Pro Football Focus (PFF) released its list of the Top 50 players in the NFL. While the Chargers offensive line and rush defense received low rankings — No. 29 and No. 25, respectively, the team did place four players in the top 50 and eight players in the Top 10 players at their respective positions. No. 30: CB CASEY HAYWARD No NFL cornerback has earned a higher coverage grade over the last three seasons than Hayward (91.9). Since joining the Bolts in 2016, Hayward has allowed just 125 receptions from 236 targets for 1,782 yards, 80 first downs and nine touchdowns, while he’s also logged 56 forced incompletions — the third-most of any cornerback in that period. Among the 111 cornerbacks targeted 100 or more times since 2016, Hayward ranks third in forced
incompletion percentage (23.7%), ninth in passer rating allowed (71.0) and eighth in completion percentage allowed (53.0%). *Ranked the No. 4 cornerback entering the 2019 season, PFF gave Hayward an overall grade rank of 21 in 2018. No. 34: WR KEENAN ALLEN Allen’s two-year receiving grade (91.2) ranks fourth among the 53 NFL wideouts with 150 or more targets since 2017. Only Michael Thomas, DeAndre Hopkins and Julio Jones rank ahead of the Chargers phenom. He also ranks third in yards per route run (2.43) and seventh in passer rating when targeted (111.6) among the same group of qualifiers. From PFF’s Cam Mellor in his WR prototypes article released last week: “An underrated aspect of Allen’s repertoire, his route-running skills are second to none at this stage of his career. Not only does he have a feel for coverages, but he also has an innate knack for reading when and where to make his breaks based upon the defenders he’s going to face.” * Ranked the No. 6 wide receiver entering the 2019 season, PFF gave Allen an overall grade rank of 6 in 2018. No. 38: S DERWIN JAMES Like (Sequon) Barkley, James only needed one season in the NFL to prove he’s worth a spot on the 2019 PFF 50. The doit-all Chargers safety could do no wrong as a rookie, earning high grades against the run, in coverage and rushing the passer all
from an array of pre-snap alignments. His 88.3 overall grade a year ago ranks third among all qualifying rookie Safeties in the PFF era (2006-18), which made him a nobrainer decision for PFF Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2018. From PFF’s Cam Mellor on James: “James’ ability to line up across the field, and do so efficiently, led to his selection as our Defensive Rookie of the Year as well as his ridiculous statistics in our PFF advanced metrics.” *Ranked the No. 3 safety entering the 2019 season, PFF gave James an overall grade rank of 5 in 2018. No. 44: CB DESMOND KING II Like (Ryan) Ramczyk, King entered the NFL with outstanding collegiate production. He earned 85.0-plus coverage grades in each of his last three seasons with Iowa, including a career-high 89.9 coverage grade in 2016. King has earned 85.7-plus overall grades and 86.6-plus coverage grades. Also, his two-year slot coverage grade (92.0) leads all qualifying slot cornerbacks. Now just 24 years old heading into Year 3 in the league, *Ranked the No. 5 cornerback entering the 2019 season, PFF gave King an overall grade rank of 2 in 2018. The Endzone: Although they failed to crack PFF’s Top 50 List, Philip Rivers, Melvin Gordon, Hunter Henry and the pass rush unit each ranked in the Top 10 at their respective positions.
NO. 9: QB PHILIP RIVERS. Rivers very quietly earned one of the best single-season overall grades of his career last year, ranking seventh among qualifiers at 88.9. Rivers was very accurate throwing to open targets and had some of the best ball placement in the NFL throwing underneath routes to a healthy Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. From PFF’s Connor Price on Rivers’ 2018 passing ability from a clean pocket and under pressure: “Rivers did an excellent job of hiding the Chargers’ offensive line flaws a season ago. Of his 674 dropbacks in 2018, 316 were stifled as a result of the Chargers’ 31stranked pass-block unit (61.9), but he still managed to earn a 70.3 grade and a 67.5% adjusted completion percentage on these plays. “Rivers tied for fourth with an 8.3 yard per attempt mark as a result of 42% of his throws venturing further than the sticks when working from a clean pocket.” *Ranked the No. 9 quarterback entering the 2019 season, PFF gave Rivers an overall grade rank of 7 in 2018. No. 6: RB MELVIN GORDON. In what was a career year for the Los Angeles Chargers veteran, Gordon rushed for 940 yards and 12 touchdowns en route to an 88.7 rushing grade that ranked second among qualifiers in 2018. He also ranked tied for seventh in forced missed tackles per attempt (0.20) and tied for fifth in percentage of carries resulting in a touchdown or first down (26%). Even against loaded boxes with eight-plus defenders, Gordon was the only qualifying back to record a rushing grade above 80.0. All of that success doesn’t make signing him to an expensive new contract a smart decision for the Bolts, but it does land him at No. 4 on this list. *Ranked the No. 3 running back entering the 2019 season, PFF gave Gordon an overall grade rank of 6 in 2018. No. 8: TE HUNTER HENRY. Injuries have limited Henry to just 1,185 offensive snaps in his three-year career, but his production across the small sample size is spectacular. His 88.5 career overall grade ranks third among the 55 tight ends with at least 1,000 offensive snaps played since 2016. He’s also earned a 90.0 receiving grade in his career that also ranks third among the same set of qualifiers. *Ranked the No. 8 Tight End entering the 2019 season, a torn ACL sidelined Henry for the season last year and he didn’t receive overall grade rank in 2018.

It was carried out without anesthesia on her hotel bed. The pain was so bad, her mother actually had to cover her daughter’s mouth to stifle her cries. The studio deducted the $500 for the abortion from her paycheck and demanded that she return to set the following week. It doesn’t get more brutal than that does it? It makes modern Hollywood look like a breeze in comparison.
