What happened that fateful day?

he 9/11 events were a series of four coordinated suicide attacks by Al-Qaeda upon the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. On that morning, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and thousands of those working in the buildings. Both towers collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others. A third airliner was crashed into the Pentagon. Hijackers had redirected the fourth plane toward Washington, D.C., targeting either the Capitol Building or the White House, but crashed it in a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake control of the airliner. There were no survivors from any of the flights. Nearly 3,000 victims and the 19 hijackers died in the attacks. Among the 2,753 victims who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority, and eight private emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Another 184 people were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. The overwhelming majority of casualties were

civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries Suspicion quickly fell on Al-Qaeda. Its leader Osama bin Laden initially denied involvement, but in 2004 he finally claimed responsibility for the attacks. Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives for the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda members, and by enacting the USA Patriot Act. It was not until May 2011 that bin Laden was found and killed. Many other countries also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Some American stock exchanges stayed closed for the rest of the week following the attack and posted enormous losses on reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The destruction of billions of dollars worth of office space caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan. The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and the Pentagon Memorial was built adjacent to the building. The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site began in 2002 and remains ongoing. Ground was broken for the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania on November 8, 2009, and the first phase of construction is expected to be ready for the 10th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2011.

s I recall it was early morning, I was still in bed, feeling groggy and not yet ready to surface. The phone rang. I couldn’t be bothered to get up and answer it, probably a debt collector or an automated sales call. The answer machine engaged. (Yes, we had answer machines back in those days!) “Hello, you’ve reached Trevor and Ryan Brenizer Photography ryanbrenizer.com Katie. Neither of us are in right now (okay, bit of a fib) but please leave your name and number and we’ll get back to you. (Maybe!) My sister’s voice came on immediately. She was calling from England. There was some kind of static and she sounded frantic which didn’t at first alarm me as she’s always has a certain drama to her voice. It’s a family trait. “They are attacking America, they are attacking America! Are you there, Trev? Please pick up the phone!” I sprung out of bed and picked up the phone. “They are attacking New York. Have you seen? Have you seen??” “Calm down, Sarah. Who is attacking? What are you talking about?” “Just go and turn on your TV and please call me back” After a few frustrating minutes wiggling the batteries in the remote, I got the TV to turn on. I saw images of the World Trade Center with dark smoke billowing from them. I shouted to Katie to come quick. We both just sat staring at the screen. It was if time had stopped. Everything felt surreal. Not sure if I was watching a disaster movie or the real news. The footage that was replayed of one of the planes flying into the tower was just horrific. For a moment I’d just think of the terror that those people aboard the planes must have been feeling knowing that in a second or two they’d be hurled into a building, no chance whatsoever for escape. I don’t remember if Katie and I spoke to each other. It was all so bizarre and unreal. I thought it must be some terribly bad flight problem and at the time did not seriously think this was an attack of any kind. Ten years later, the world has certainly changed in many ways. 9/11 turned everything topsy-turvy. Terrorism, conspiracy, homeland security, travel issues, patriotism, Al-Qaeda, hate crimes are just a few of the many topics that now dominate vocabularies. The aftershocks of the 9/11 incidence continue to reverberate in ways I’d never of imagined. We invited our readers to answer three questions: 1. Where were you on 9/11? 2. What were your initial thoughts that day? 3. Ten years later, what are your thoughts now? We’ve devoted a large part of this issue to share these answers. Obviously we could not include all of them and hope to compile a book in the very near future. We did not want this issue of our paper to be a sensational look at 9/11 or delve into conspiracy theories or express biased judgment. This is simply our way of remembering that fateful day ten years ago. Thanks, Trevor

Ooops! Last issue I wrote that Chaplain Ringo retired from the Marine Corps. I am very embarassed, especially as I talk with Ron, and attended his retirement ceremony last month. Chaplain Ringo was a Marine for 11 years and spent most of his 17 years as a Navy Chaplain with the Marines, and lives the motto: “Once a Marine, Always a Marine,” but on August 1st actually retired from the Navy. The Tributes flow in My name is Retired Boatswains Mate Danny S. Chapple, from San Diego California. 9/11 came as a surprise to me as to everyone. I was stationed Naval Air Station, North Island, Calif., at HC-11 Gunbears. I was driving into work that morning when I heard the news over the radio. Someone just slammed a plane into the one of the Twins Towers in New York City. Of course first thing I did was drive fast as I could into work. There was an immediate recall of military personnel to base within 24 hour. Naval Station North Island was its highest alert. Our squadron was on ready alert. After 48 hours we were on patrol of the entire region of San Diego Harbor all the way down to Tijuana. I was very angry that day and also very scared, I asked myself why us? Why kill all these people for no reason. What was scarier was the fact my brother, who was in New York at the time, was on his way back home to Gary, Indiana. To this day, God bless him big time, the flight he was bumped from earlier that day was the one that crashed into the second tower. It is years later and I’m now retired. I know that bin Laden is dead but may he never rest in peace. I think the world is now in a better place that it was ten years ago. I believe mankind can reflect and learn a great deal from this and continue to strive for a better way of peace and a good way of life.

Remembering 9-11 It was a typical day, in my office preparing to make rounds at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. I had begun a yearlong Pastoral Care Residency program a couple months earlier. It was a quiet, clear morning in Virginia when unexpectedly a fellow chaplain came into my office and asked if I saw what was happening? He explained that a plane had just crashed into one of the Twin Towers. We dashed over to where there was a TV in a nearby clinic. Then for the next couple of hours we watched everything unfold before our eyes. We were honestly in shock and said to each other that we just saw the world change. After we had our fill of the replays, we

went back to my office and decide to have prayer together. Again, we knew that our roles of Chaplains for the Navy and Marine Corps had just been dramatically changed. Little did I know how much for me personally it would be. Within a year one of my sons joined the Marines and after my time at Portsmouth we ended up being stationed together at Camp Legeune NC. He preparing for war as an infantry Marine and me designing the Warrior Transition Program to help them when they return from combat. My son ended up being there the first day of the war and then another tour during the elections in Iraq. He saw a lot of heavy combat and I brought back the first two waves of Marines, Holy-Heloing from ship to ship providing the Warrior Transition Program. We combined our experiences in the Film: “Between Iraq and a Hard Place.” Now ten years later, life has moved on in many ways. However, the war still lingers… My son has struggled from his experiences and has several physical issues from his time in combat. 9-11 has changed so much of our lives. From the way we travel to how we look at people to our general feeling about life and the world around us. It is my hope that we can appreciate all those who have given so much since 9-11. This ten year anniversary should be a time of reflection, thankfulness and introspection on how we can make life better for those around us. May we do so…

I was driving along the boulevard in Nottingham as it all unfolded. Someone phoned me in my car to tell me planes had been flown into the Twin Towers. I thought he was joking. I remember stopping at a local shop and telling some other people that I had heard this. We were in total disbelief, just like when we heard cars were being fired bombed one mile from our house this past week during the riots in London? How do we feel now? Well we often see programs on TV about 9/11 and it seems surreal, just like it happened yesterday. I think being in large cities is very daunting, you just know this could happen anywhere at anytime.

I had the TV on, casually watching a vapid morning show, as I got dressed when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. I looked out my window and could see smoke. I decided to shoot a few shots and got my camera from my studio two floors below. I re-

member taking out the screen in the window to get a clear shot and just as I started to shoot, I could see another plane coming into view... heading directly towards the other tower. Stupidly, I lowered my camera to watch it instead of shooting it. I guess I’d make a lousy war photographer. The second plane made it clear to me that this was not some accident. This was an attack. A few hours later, my wife and I decided we should leave the city for upstate. We knew that the fumes would be toxic, despite what the officials were saying. We were proved right years later when so many people died from close exposure. Within a few days, when the scope of the tragedy became apparent, I became depressed. Of course I was upset about the loss of life. It hit close to home as a dear friend of my daughter’s was killed in the Towers. What also bothered me was that I knew this event would be used by the Bush administration to start a war. I just knew that was going to happen. And here we are today, still at war. No President wants to lose a war. No President wants that on his watch, part of his legacy. I remember how hard it was to get out of Vietnam and how long it took, so I knew that once we got into Iraq, it would be equally hard and long to get out of there.

I was getting ready for work and I turned on the TV for a news update. By the time I tuned in, one plane had already hit the World Trade Center and the media was speculating as to how it happened. Within 20 minutes, the second plane hit. As the scope of the attacks continued to unfold with coverage of United 93, the Pentagon and then watching the towers fall, I felt a sense of helplessness, anger, and despair. Our response and resilience as a nation in the days, weeks, and months that followed was amazing. It was surreal watching these horrible events unfold and watching the panic and desperation of those in New York. I tried calling family and friends but all phone lines were jammed most of the day. My husband was on active duty with the USMC and was already at work. I was pregnant with our second child and was scheduled for a sonogram that day at the Naval Hospital on Camp Pendleton. Needless to say, my husband wasn’t able to attend. My sonogram is dated 9/11/01. It will always be surreal to see this precious life on a sonogram on the same day thousands died in such a brutal way – murdered by cowards. The memory of 9/11 will always be seared in my mind. Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday, and at other times, it seems like a lifetime ago. Ten years later, I’m shocked that so many in this nation seem to have forgotten the devastation of that day and have caved into political correctness. I am stunned there was even a consideration for an Islamic mosque to be built near Ground Zero. This is hallowed ground. All those innocent people slaughtered at the hands of radical Islam deserve more than this and so does America. I am grateful to all those in the military who proudly serve this nation and courageously defend our freedom. Thank you. You are appreciated more than words can express.

At 05:50 on 9-11 I was on my way to work at the MCAS Camp Pendleton Fuel Farm. On the way the radio was saying that a plane had hit one of the towers in New York. They did not say it was a passenger liner, only a plane so I thought it was as a small aircraft that had veered off track and hit it because of fog. By the time I got to my office I knew it was a large aircraft. I did my normal opening routine and still kept my eyes on the shop TV. I knew then that our happy-go-lucky world in the United States was going to be changed forever. Our Commanding Officer sent everyone home to be with their families. into the Camp Pendleton Helicopter Base. Barbed wire was everywhere. For days and days, every car was directed to this huge lot on the air station and every individual and car was searched. Our world had changed overnight.

Where was I when the world stopped turning? I was a BM 2 stationed on USS Denver LPD-9 and it was morning quarters 0700. Our senior chief came up and reported that a small plane struck the WTC and there was no additional information at that time. Our division finished quarters with no noticeable changes happening on the ship and we went down to the berthing to watch it on TV. We tuned in just in time to see the first tower fall and all were dumbfounded on emotions between, “Oh s—-” and “They must have gotten everyone out before the crash.” Then came the report of a plane crashing in a field. Strangely enough, we had INSURV preparations for that week and our senior chief came in and got us back to work. I went down to the deck office and called my wife to tell her not to go to work and that more attacks may follow. It was off to the well deck to get to work after that but I could all feel a lot of bad energy in the way I saw the people. We suddenly got the call to stop work and start setting all the water tight doors on the ship and prep for a possible underway. The Denver is a steam ship and needed several hours to get ready. All frigates and destroyers wasted no time and fired up their gas turbine engines to get underway within a half hour. I have never seen so many ships leave at once. We get the word to man gun stations facing out on the

bay and the repair lockers as well. I was sent to the bridge to assist the pier watch and stayed like that till dark It is dark now, the phones are secured and I am on watch in the pilot house facing the quay wall. I usually see planes on approach to the airport and there were none so it was creepy. There was also very little traffic on the base. It was just so quiet and so tense. We get up next morning for quarters and are told that INSURV is on hold and all liberty is secured. After quarters, it is 0800 and time for morning colors. As always, it is the color guard on the fantail hoisting the American flag and Command Duty Officer saluting. Normally, this in the only group of people out there but this time, there are about 12 to 15 others out there on the fantail along with me saluting the flag. It would be like that every morning at 0800 for the rest of my time on the USS Denver. I called my wife and she said that her job is closed for now. I asked her to call home as I am from New York and my sister lives in NYC. My family called and said that she is OK but she was close to where it happened and saw the whole thing. I am still unable to describe what I am feeling as we see the towers crash and see new footage of the planes hitting and now I hear rumors of Anthrax release. I seriously wondered if a nuclear weapon was in downtown San Diego and would go off in the next minute and I was unable to be with my wife. I called her and she was doing OK but said that it was very quiet on the streets. Three days later, liberty was granted and I got home to find my wife at work. When she finally came through the door, we hugged for what seemed like 15 minutes. I can’t remember my emotions that day but I feel my wife’s hug like it just happened a few minutes ago.

Ten years later I think back to the first word on the crash to what is going on now. All of us watched and wept, all of us waited for the President’s speech, we all listened to the people in Washington, D.C. sing “God Bless America” on TV. We all knew where this attack started from and who gave the order and we wanted pay back and most of us cheered when our planes dominated the skies over Afghanistan. That was where it all stopped in my opinion. I felt great and then I felt sickened when liberal politicians started to question our methods at how we worked and he we got the information so we could work. I recall with disgust a certain frustrated mother of a fallen soldier who went from someone standing outside the President’s farm to this person who was dolled up by liberal media into some sort of trull for hire. I won’t name names but she was the one who said that drone attacks were unfair to the insurgents. Conspiracy theorists worked from the basements of their mother’s houses to uncover something so big and vast but somehow they knew of it. We became a nation divided as people used the deaths of all of those people for their own gains whether they were politicians, activists, theorists or even actors. I deployed over to the Gulf the next year and spent the first anniversary underway in the Gulf. Every two minutes, the Bo’sun’s mate of the watch would ring two bells and call out the name of everyone who died in the WTC. It took the latter part of a whole day to read them all and I wrote some of their names down in my daily WESTPAC journal. It is ten years later and I still feel a lot of pain for those lost and those who lost someone. Many of those who worked there now have respiratory problems. My ex-brother-in-law was NYPD at the time and worked in one of the morgues piecing body parts back together. And then someone wanted to put a mosque down near the WTC even though there was all the space in the world in the New York State and NYC to build. I felt so much joy when I Continues on page 8

About the World Trade Center

The original World Trade Center was a complex of seven buildings including the iconic twin towers in Lower Manhattan in New York City which opened on April 4, 1973, and was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The site is being rebuilt, with six skyscrapers and a memorial to the casualties of the attacks. At the time of their completion, 1 World Trade Center and 2 World Trade Center were the tallest buildings in the world, surpassing the Empire State Building, which is also in Manhattan. The cost for the construction was $400 million ($2,169,167,354 as of 2011). The original World Trade Center was designed by Minoru Yamasaki in the early 1960s using a tube-frame structural design for the twin 110-story towers. In gaining approval for the project, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey agreed to take over the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, which became the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH). Groundbreaking for the World Trade Center took place on August 5, 1966. The North Tower was completed in December 1972 and the South Tower was finished in July 1973; the two were collectively known as the Twin Towers, the two tallest buildings in the world at that time. The construction project involved excavating a large amount of material, which was used for landfill to make Battery Park City on the west side of Lower Manhattan. The complex was located in the heart of New York City’s downtown financial district and contained 13.4 million square feet of office space. The Windows on the World restaurant was located on the 106th and 107th floors of 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower) while the Top of the World observation deck was located on the 107th floor of 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower). Other World Trade Center buildings included the 3 Marriott World Trade Center; 4 World Trade Center; 5 World Trade Center; 6 World Trade Center, which housed U.S. Customs. All of these buildings were built between 1975 and 1981. The final building constructed was 7 World Trade Center, which was built in 1985. The second “King Kong” was filmed in 1976 with some scenes mentioning and seeing the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center experienced a fire on Feb. 13, 1975, and a bombing on Feb. 26, 1993. In 1998, the Port Authority decided to privatize the World Trade Center, leasing the buildings to a private company to manage, and awarded the lease to Silverstein Properties in July 2001.

my friend Michelle whose husband Eric was also serving aboard the Peleliu. Michelle is screaming in my ear, “Get up! Get up! We’re being attack!!!” The first thing that came to my mind was that our husbands’ ship had been bombed like the USS Cole. Michelle is telling me to hurry up and turn on the TV. I jumped out of bed, went into the living room and turned the news on. Just seconds as I did I see the airplane slam into the second World Trade Tower. I dropped to my knees, put my hands over my face and started to weep uncontrollably. They then changed locations to my hometown of Northern, Virginia, and showed where another plane slammed into the Pentagon. I received an e-mail from Frank later that evening and in not so many words he was telling me that the entire battle group was heading for the Gulf. I was pretty sure that all my friends and family were safe, but three weeks later I flew back home for my grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary and that’s when I learned that my dear friend Norma Lang Steuerle was on the plane that slammed into the Pentagon. I was upset before, but then after hearing the news about my friend, I was PISSED! I was very thankful that my husband Frank and his battle group were there doing some damage. It’s been 10 years now and most of the bad guy’s are either dead or in Gitmo. Those it is comforting to know that justice has been served, but it still doesn’t change the fact that my friend Norma is gone as well as everyone else to died on September 11th, 2001 in either the attack itself or the hero’s who came to try to save lives. I would like to take this moment to say thank you to all of the fire and rescue personnel in New York City and Washington, D.C. And to all of the men and woman who bravely serve in our military.

I remember before 9/11 you could get to an airport an hour early and still be able to make your flight. That is rare today. Being in the Navy for twenty years now, I have traveled the world and there is no other place I would rather call my home than the United States. One thing those cowards did give us that day was unity. It always seems in times of tragedy the people of the U.S. step up to help their fellow man. On the morning of Sept 11 2001 I was in Germany on Panzer BKS. I was with the 855th Military Police Company out of AZ on our two weeks of training. I had work the night before on MP patrol I was the patrol sup that night. I was off duty and sitting in the day room watching the TV, getting ready to go and eat. One of my PFCs had walked in and sat down, I ask him

that if the First SGT came in looking for me to let him know that I had gone to get something to eat and would be back in 30. I was about 10 feet from the door when the PFC came out and said that an airplane had hit the WTC. I went back in to see the news and as we sat there we saw another jet hit the other tower. For a long 10 seconds we just looked at each other. When I told him to go up to his room and get his gear, that we just went to war with someone and meet me back here in 5. We met back at the day room and started down the orderly room to see what we were to do. Half way down we run in to the First SGT and he told us to go to the arms room and draw our weapons We got down to the arms room and that’s when it got real for the PFC when the Sgt. gave him his M-16 with 180 rounds and his M-9 and 45 rounds — a combat load out, He then gave me the vest for my M-16/203, the vest full of 40mm HE rounds 180 M-16 rounds and 45 9mm rounds. We each were given a hand held and a call sign and given an area to patrol we were also given deadly force orders. About an hour in to our patrol we started to see German citizens come up to the gate and set flowers at the gate most were crying openly. My Initial Thoughts: That someone was going to pay for what they had done to my country. About two hours had gone by when the First SGT came by and told us that the Twin Towers were gone. All I could think about was how many people lost their lives and would I know anyone. Ten Years After: We got the Coward may he rot in hell. We did what we said we would do, and that was to hunt him down and kill him.

academic year, as part of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. Active duty members were not previously eligible for the books and supplies funding. Additional benefits to servicemembers and veterans include reimbursement of fees for exams used for admission to colleges. Such exams include the ACT, GMAT or SAT. Changes to the bill also mean reimbursement for more than one licensing or certification examination. Additionally, there are expanded benefits for non-college degree programs, on-the-job training, apprenticeship training, flight programs and correspondence training. “I think the great thing about these changes (is) that it brings a lot more training options under the umbrella of this already robust program,” said Keith Wilson, director of education service at the Department of Veterans Affairs. New enrollees in the program will also find that if they are entitled to the housing allowance (active duty and their spouses are not) they can receive that benefit while enrolled in certificate or other non-college degree programs or even long-distance learning. Those enrolled in distance learning could receive up to 50 percent of the housing allowance provided to those who enrolled in on-campus education programs. The housing allowance for

those in resident training is now prorated based on a student’s course load. A student taking a course load that is approximately 80 percent of what a school deems “full time,” would receive 80 percent of the housing allowance. Housing allowance for an in-resident student taking a full load is equivalent to the basic housing allowance for an E-5 with dependants. Additional changes to benefits under the bill include elimination of housing payments for even short gap periods between enrollments. In the past, during the lessthan-one-month breaks between semesters, beneficiaries could continue to receive housing payments. But that is no longer the case, Wilson said. While Wilson said VA is working to keep students informed of the changes, students will have to practice some “sound financial management” on

their own to make rent payments during the short non-enrollment periods between semesters. Wilson pointed out that under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, beneficiaries have never received housing allowance during the three-month summer break. Wilson added that, when beneficiaries did receive housing payment between enrollments, they were actually burning up part of their benefits. The bill provides for 36 months of benefits. If a student was getting just housing benefits for the nearly one-month period between the fall and spring semesters, for instance, that would burn up a month of benefits. The new change in law also affects payment eligibility, and now accounts for active duty service performed by National Guard members under Title 32. By Crystal Arriaga Scammers, price gougers, opportunity assailants they’re all less than America should put up with no one wants to feel taken advantage of. Think of a town off the top of your head that is geared towards a certain demographic aka military. It came to you pretty fast right? Small towns are really great for supporting their local military and most owners are even prior military themselves trying to keep actively involved for the military. Yet regardless of America’s patriotism there are businesses out there that have less than credible morals and policies and blatantly prey on military families in order to make major profit. What’s disheartening is that typical patrons do not shop around for the best deals, online reviews of the store or even a BBB rating before spending their hard earned money typically trusting the salesman’s word about a ‘discount.’ If the consumer spent two minutes online before this impulse buy they would have saved possibly hundreds at a nearby store. I understand wanting your business to do well but those that intentionally try to get over on the one-horse-town kid new in a completely different culture is a few crayons short of a full 24 box. It happens every day and it’s just a tragedy that so many get taken for a ride they didn’t even know they were on. So if you’re buying a laptop research online the best rate from a reputable chain do not buy into the crap from the downtown store that has a laptop for $6,000 on sale for a ‘super fast computer’ that they probably paid only $600 for. If you’re renting a car make sure the business isn’t out of a hotel room or apartment. Make sure to inspect the total vehicle for gum, stains, dents and all because there are those who seem nice then upon returning it charge you for things that you didn’t even do and then they can charge what they want because they have your credit card. These scammer businesses pop up overnight trying to figure out ways to take advantage of those who are continually fighting so hard to protect the liberty and freedoms that allow these fakers the ability to do this. Oldest survivor of Bataan Death March dies

Albert “Doc” Brown was the oldest of the remaining survivors. On Sunday, Aug. 14, Albert “Doc” Brown passed away at the age of 105, in Nashville, Illinois.

The VA has launched its Paralympic Program website, www. va.gov/adaptivesports, as part of VA’s ongoing commitment to support the rehabilitation and recovery of disabled veterans through participation in adaptive sports. One of the highlights of the new website is the “Success Stories” page, which features disabled Veterans and their stories of how participating in adaptive sports has positively impacted their lives. Veterans who participate in adaptive sports at any level, as well as Paralympic competitors, are encouraged to submit their stories and share their challenges and triumphs with the entire Veteran community. The site also features many useful resources including a searchable database connecting disabled vets with local sports programs in the U.S.

The Bataan Death March is one of the more notorious events to have occurred during WWII. Seventy-eight thousand prisoners of war were forced to walk 65 miles, from Mariveles in the province of Bataan, to San Fernando, in the province of Pampanga, in the Philippines. An estimated 11,000 prisoners died along the way, some who were still relatively young soldiers. Among those who survived, however, is Albert “Doc” Brown, who was nearly 40 years old when he joined the trek. He did not only survive the Bataan Death March, but was also able to secretly document the journey.

Hospitable take over

The armed forces protocol is to welcome new military families with open arms. There are a wide variety of young adults far from home that should be guided towards experiencing a safe and rewarding new life in the U.S. military. It is a busy life, however, with schedules, deadlines, long shifts and working holidays. Then there is the missing of and longing for loved ones and family members. But at least there is a life to be lived. Within the armed forces there is a sense of justice, fairness and caring for the common good, a life of unity, structure and discipline that the civilian community is deplorably lacking. It is necessary these days to take the time to show others outside of the military community why a military life could be a better way of living for them. You do not have to be a recruiter to recruit. This story was reported to me from West Virginia. A young man some time ago was faced with much turmoil in his life. His vehicle was repossessed, his friends were gone and he had little to no support from his family. He found himself standing on the edge of a canyon in Oregon. He felt his life was over and he had nothing else to live for. A man who was heading a local Christian youth group was hiking in the same area and came upon the boy who was about to jump. This man was not only a child of God but a member of the armed forces. He spoke to the boy about God’s love for him and a possible future in the military. Within a few brief moments both men walked away from the edge of the canyon. The boy is now a successful Naval Officer and doing better than ever! Thank you sir, whoever you are. There are civilians struggling all around you, especially the younger ones. They have no guidance and have no idea which way to go in their life. As a member of the military you can truly make a difference outside of your community. If you could take the time to show others that are less fortunate why it is you hold so much pride when wearing that uniform? How it is that you are able to experience the finer things in life? All Have a Purpose It has been said, “There is a mighty strength that comes of the knowledge that you and I are sons and daughters of God. Within us is something of divinity. Those who have this knowledge and permit it to influence their lives will not stoop to do mean or cheap or tawdry things. Let us encourage the divinity within us to come to the surface.” If we thought about it, we’d probably realize that we really don’t have anything that we haven’t received from someone else. If we were to look at our lives and consider who and what had helped shape and create us, we would find many people had a hand. We would see family, friends, co-workers, teachers and others. I believe God has made us who we are through the assistance of others. A story of one who exemplifies this follows: If you remember, on 9-11-01 it was Todd Beamer who said, “Let’s Roll!” and helped take down the plane that was heading for Washington, D.C. His wife, Lisa Beamer on Good Morning America, said it’s the little things that she misses most about Todd, such as hearing the garage door open as he came home, and her children running to meet him. She’s now the mom of a beautiful little girl, Mary. Lisa recalled this story: “I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down there. With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said, “Class is over. I would like to share with all of you, a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important.” “Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this

fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is the Powers way of telling us that we must make the most out of every single day.” Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see, it could be a scent, perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone’s house, or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground. Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound trite to some, these things are the ‘stuff’ of life. The little things we are put here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted. We must make it important to notice them, for at any time it can all be taken away.” The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester. Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we all overlook.” Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. Go barefoot, or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off on the way home tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn’t do. Remember, “life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” You might want to try doing something that some friends of mine do. Often, as they see each other when one returns home for the day…they gasp as they catch each other’s eyes. I think this is

a wonderful way to greet someone special in our lives or to acknowledge a spectacular sunset. Discovering the beauty around us and the purpose of our own lives, individually and even collectively, is a challenging process. However, we can learn a lot about ourselves and the world and about our God by looking around us at all his handiwork, realizing how blessed we really are by the aide of so many who touch our lives. As we truly take the time to soak in the beauties of nature and those people around us in our lives, we realize that none of this is just by chance. I believe our lives are each a very valuable part of a great and grand design. On “Personal Growth Retreats” in which I oversaw in the past, I experienced, often just for a few seconds, a glimpse of the infinite, and the meaning of life came to view. I saw new life come into the eyes of someone in despair as the result of a thoughtful look from another or being heard by someone with a desire to understand. Being filled with genuine

care and concern for who and what is around us helps us see with clearer vision that God’s hand is in everything. May we seek to look more clearly this week, is my desire. her. The alarms started to go off and I grabbed my backpack and walked out into the hallway to exit the Pentagon. It was pure orderly chaos! I saw things that day that will forever be imprinted in my mind. When we walked out into the hallway all we say when looking down towards the area that the plane had hit was darkness and smoke. I saw injured people walking out looking dazed and bloody. They say that the nose of the plane landed 20 feet from hitting our office spaces. When we were allowed back into the Pentagon

to grab our things, one of our office mates took pictures and we saw the big “X” that marked the spot where the nose of the plane had been. We were told that we got very lucky that day. Rumor had it that the plane had hit the highway first and then into the Pentagon. It wasn’t until a few hours later that I was been able to call my mom back and let her know I was okay. My daughter, who was 8 months old at the time, was at Anacostia. We were not allowed to drive our cars out of the Pentagon parking lots that day. My di-

rector had his wife come pick him up and they had a car seat for their grandson in the car, they took me to go pick up my daughter and dropped me back off at Ft. Myers to stay overnight with a co-worker since I had no vehicle to get back to Woodbridge with. The next day we were allowed to go and pick up our vehicles from the parking lot. Walking past the Pentagon with the smell of smoke and burning fuel in the air will be something that I will never forget.

I was standing on the showroom floor of the car dealership that I was working at in Upstate New York as a Sales and Leasing Consultant watching TV, on the phone with my older brother who was stranded in his 18-wheeler on the George Washington Bridge in New York City watching the second plane hit the towers! 2. My initial thoughts were, this has to be some kind of a bad Harrison Ford movie but when reality hit with that phone call all we could do is watch and listen as our great state and city went into complete demise. My feelings that day were devastating. This was the greatest act of coward-ism anyone could have ever played out. The families, workers and people of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut suffer to this day from the devastation of 9/11/01. They devastated our city, state, country and most of all our ECONOMY and now it was time for them to pay the ultimate sacrifice. 3. Ten years later here is my short story. On June 2003, I finally became enlisted in the United States Navy at 31 years old in Albany, New York. I was deployed several times and did an Individual Augmentee billet to Iraqi and now I have one of the most rewarding jobs in the military. My feelings today are all based on our core values — Honor, Courage and Commitment. Because of our patience and our ability to never give up, “We are the United States of America.” Hopefully our families back in NYC can sleep at ease knowing we’ve got their back at a moment’s notice. “Because You’re New York and That’s What Your Made Of!”

It just so happens that I was an executive secretary (editor) for the World Trade Center in New York. I worked on the 67th floor. I left my dear city on September 2 1980. How could I possibly forget my dear friends in the office? I went to Oklahoma City about six months after the disaster on a mission to work in the medical field to help any way I could. I was at home in my apartment when my roommate was yelling and telling me to look at the television screen. I immediately screamed and cried as I envisioned my past place of employment being destroyed. I really didn’t believe my eyes; it looked as though it was something you see out of a movie. How could this happen? I suddenly felt numb and my whole body shook. My roommate grabbed me as I began crying with great pain. I must have cried for hours. She offered me a sedative and I couldn’t refuse it. For the next week or so I found Continues on page 20

fuse it. For the next week or so I found myself feeling cold and empty. I must have taken off work to grieve. I knew for a fact that I wore black clothing for a whole month. I truly prayed for all the people that lost their lives in this horrid tragedy. I do hope and pray that those who lost their friends and family have recovered what they have lost and found peace in their lives. My very good co-worker’s name was Barbara Fink. I was in the 9th grade at Montgomery High School in first period class when our teacher came into our classroom. She was very sad and appeared so scared. One of my classmates asked her what’s happening and she went to turn on

I was listening to a New York-based syndicated radio show on cmy ommute to the gym/work that morning. I came in on the middle of the show and didn’t quite realize what was going on. This particular show was wacky so I didn’t put two and two together. Once I was on the treadmill at the gym and watching the TV, I saw the scene from New York. Then on a picture-inpicture screen, the scene from the Pentagon aired. It was hard to take it all in at once. My God, was this really happening on American soil? I was stunned. Ten years later, I’m more afraid of what’s happening inside our own government than a terrorist attack.

Each year light shines the classroom television without uttering a single word. As I listened to the news, I came to realize the United States of America had been attacked by terrorists! 2. What were your initial thoughts/ feelings that day? The first thing that came into my mind was “WAR” and I was so scared! The fact that my two brothers were both in the Army made me feel so worried and horrified. I came to think of the worst thing that can happen to them. So I prayed to God then and there to please keep my brothers safe from harm. 3. Ten years after, what are your thoughts? Gone But Not Forgotten

Yvonne De Carlo Yvonne when asked in 1972 about her affair with Howard Hughes before he turned into a legendary recluse: “Howard taught me how to land a plane and how to take off. But he never taught me anything about flying in between. He thought that I had learned the difficult parts, and that was enough.”

While starring in The Gal Who Took the West (1949), De Carlo not only walked away with the picture, but she walked away with Jock Mahoney, who was her boyfriend at the time. She and Jock were going to start a family, and in 1949, they were engaged. In her first trimester, she suffered a miscarriage, and De Carlo called off the engagement. She married the stunt man Robert Morgan, whom she met on the set of Shotgun, on November 21, 1955. They had two sons, Bruce and Michael. Morgan also had a daughter, Bari, from a previous marriage. Morgan’s left leg had to be amputated after he was run over by a train while doing stunt work on How the West Was Won (1962). However, his contract with MGM assumed no responsibility for the accident. De Carlo and Morgan filed a $1.4 million lawsuit against the studio, claiming her husband was permanently disabled. They divorced in June 1974. In her autobiography, published in 1987, she listed 22 intimate friends, including Prince Aly Khan, Billy Wilder, Burt Lancaster, Howard Hughes, Robert Stack and Robert Taylor. Her mother died in 1993 from a fall. Her son Michael died in 1997; causes were unknown, although a Santa Barbara Police report contains concerns about possible foul play. De Carlo had a stroke the following year, but soon recovered. De Carlo was a naturalized citizen of the United States.

From Here to Eternity (1953)

“From Here To Eternity” takes place right before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Thus, it’s really not a war movie. Actually its more of a soap opera with Burt Lancaster putting the make on Deborah Kerr and Frank Sinatra having a fight with Ernest Borgnine and Montgomery Clift having a tryst with Donna Reed, which brings me to the element of the movie that I really liked: Donna Reed’s character. tions and circus arts at Union Settlement, one of the city’s oldest settlement houses. They formed the acrobat duo “Lang and Cravat” and soon joined the Kay Brothers circus. However, in 1939 an injury forced Lancaster to give up the profession, with great regret. (He would later be reunited with Cravat in nine films: The Flame and the Arrow, The Crimson Pirate, Run Silent, Run Deep, The Scalphunters, Airport, Valdez Is Coming, Ulzana’s Raid, The Midnight Man and The Island of Dr. Moreau.) He then found temporary work until 1942 — first as a salesman for Marshall Fields, and then as a singing waiter in various restaurants. The United States having then entered World War II, Lancaster joined the United States Army and performed with the Army’s Twenty-First Special Services Division, one of the military groups organized to follow the troops on the ground and provide USO entertainment to keep up morale. He served with General Mark Clark’s Fifth Army in Italy from 1943 to 1945.

Burton Stephen “Burt” Lancaster (Nov. 2, 1913-Oct. 20, 1994) was an American film actor noted for his athletic physique and distinctive smile (which he called “The Grin”). After initially building his career on “tough guy” roles, Lancaster abandoned his “all-American” image in the late 1950s in favor of more complex and challenging roles, and came to be regarded as one of the best actors of his generation as a result. Lancaster was nominated four times for Academy Awards and won once — for his work in Elmer Gantry in 1960. He also won a Golden Globe for that performance and BAFTA Awards for The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Atlantic City (1980). His production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, was the most successful and innovative star-driven independent production company in Hollywood of the 1950s, making movies such as Marty (1955), Trapeze (1956), and Sweet Smell of Success (1957). Lancaster also directed two films: The Kentuckian (1955) and The Midnight Man (1974). In 1999, the American Film Institute named Lancaster nineteenth among the greatest male stars of all time.

Elmer Gantry (1960)

Elmer Gantry is a fast talking, hard drinking traveling salesman who always has a risqué story and a hip flask to entertain cronies and customers alike. He is immediately taken with Sister Sharon Falconer, a lay preacher whose hellfire and damnation revivalism has attracted quite a following. Gantry uses his own quick wit and knowledge of the bible to become an indispensable part of Sister Sharon’s roadshow but soon finds that his past catches up with him in the form of Lulu Bains, now a prostitute. While Gantry seeks and eventually gets forgiveness from Sharon, tragedy strikes when she finally manages to get out of her revivalist tent and opens a permanent church.

Key questions as Chargers prepare for 2011 Season By Art Garcia

or the first time since the 2005 season, the San Diego Chargers failed to make the playoffs last year thanks to a few key injuries, inopportune turnovers and a special teams unit that resembled the Keystone Cops more than that of a professional football team. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Norv Turner has something to prove as this team has regressed in the post-season ever since he took over a Marty Schottenheimer-led squad that finished atop the AFC with a 14-2 record in 2006. Under Turner’s watch, the Chargers have posted two playoff wins in ’07; one win in ’08; no win in ’09 and they failed to make the playoffs last season – not the kind of numbers expected from a team regarded by many in the NFL as

one of the most talented over the past five years. With the NFL season ready to kickoff in two weeks, here is a look at five key questions surrounding your San Diego Chargers. Can the special teams rebound from disaster last year and actually become ‘special’ again? After allowing four returns for scores (including three on kickoffs) and four blocked punts (and another deflected), special teams coach Steve Crosby was replaced by the highly-regarded Rich Bisaccia (Tampa Bay Buccaneers). Although injuries and inexperience played a major role in the demise of the special teams, it became appar-

ent that Crosby’s coaching style wasn’t getting through after nine years on the job. In Bisaccia, the unit not only gets a detail-oriented coach with highintensity, they also get a coach who has something the players all strive to obtain – a Super Bowl ring. In addition to Crosby, gone are the likes of Darren Sproles, Brandon Siler, Antwan Applewhite and Paul Oliver – all contributors in their own right within the special teams unit. Rookies Marcus Gilchrist, Jonas Mouton, Shareece Wright and Jordan Todman will be expected to contribute right away and help re-establish this unit amongst one of the elite in the NFL – a status it once held under Crosby. Will safety Bob Sanders stay healthy enough to become a force in the secondary?

The Chargers are hoping Sanders can bring that physical play to a secondary that has lacked a certain toughness since the departure of Rodney Harrison in 2003. During his tenure in San Diego, Harrison’s aggressive style of play set the tone for the defense and sent a message to receivers that there was a heavy price to pay for running patterns over the middle. Having played just nine games over the past three seasons, Sanders has looked good throughout training camp and in the preseason games. If he can return to the type of player that earned him Defensive Player of the year in ’07, maybe he can earn Comeback Player of the Year in 2011? That’s a big if, but don’t forget what kind of impact an ‘injury-riddled’ Harrison had on the Patriots after the Chargers let him go – two Super Bowl rings in three appearances. Can running back Ryan Mathews live up to expectations of a first-round pick after a disappointing rookie campaign? Thanks to a high ankle sprain, trouble hanging onto the ball and inexperience in pass protection, Mathews 678 yards rushing with seven touchdowns was a major letdown from all the hype he had coming out of Fresno State. Entering his second year, Mathews looks much more comfortable within the system and Turner is counting on him to improve drastically not only in the rushing department, but also in third-down packages as both a blocker and receiver where the departure of Sproles has left a major void. With GM A.J. Manusky inherits a defense that finished 2010 No. 1 in yards allowed under the watchful eye of then-coordinator Ron Rivera, who was hired as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers following the season. Despite the high ranking, the focus over the offseason was two-fold: to get more physical on defense and in turn, create more turnovers – they finished 2010 tied for 23rd with just 23 takeaways. Along with Sanders, Smith also signed free agent linebackers Takeo Spikes and Travis LaBoy – both having played under Manusky for the 49ers. Spikes will start at one of the inside linebacker spots and will make the defensive calls while LaBoy will push Larry English for one of the outside ‘backer positions. Having already coached Shaun Phillips, Quentin Jammer and Jacques Cesaire during his first stint with the Chargers in the mid-‘00s, Manusky’s game plan shouldn’t take too long to implement since his 3-4 scheme will resemble that of Rivera’s – with some slight variances.

Is this the year the Chargers finally get off to a fast start to the season and prove they are one of the elite teams in the NFL? Under Turner the Chargers have lost three of their first five games in each of his four seasons. And last year it finally caught up to them and bit them in the rear as they finished the season 9-7 and out of the playoffs. Although they have new coaches leading the defense and special teams, Smith was wise to keep his core group of players from a team that ranked No. 1 in total offense and defense. With quarterback Philip Rivers throwing for 30 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions without the full services of his receiving corps throughout the year thanks to injuries and a holdout, the kind of numbers this offense can put up if everyone can remain healthy could very well surpass Air-Coryell. Having three of their first four games at home, the Chargers can ill-afford to fall into the same trap of another slow start to the season. A key point that should work to their advantage is the fact that by keeping the majority of the roster and coaching staff together, the impact of the lockout should have less affect on them than other teams that made major changes.

Hines Ward and Head Injuries

nce upon time, Hines Ward had all the qualities sports fans admire. He was a great player with a well-rounded skill set, a college quarterback turned Pro Bowl wide receiver. He was a fierce blocker at a position known more for divas than physicality. He spent his whole career with one team, and he always played with a smile on his face. What’s not to like? Maybe it was too good to be true. In recent years, Ward has repeatedly been voted the dirtiest player in the NFL, a dishonor normally reserved for defensive players, or the occasional offensive lineman. He was arrested for drunk driving, failing multiple field sobriety tests and refusing to take a breathalyzer. And he has been the league’s most vocal advocate against protecting players from head trauma. Ward even admitted that he has lied to doctors after suffering concussions. “I’ve lied to a couple of doctors saying, ‘I’m straight, I feel good,’ when I knew I’m really not straight. But I don’t think guys really about the future when they’re playing currently in the NFL.” That’s exactly why the NFL needs standards in place to protect players from head injuries: because they won’t protect themselves. The drive to battle through those things is probably part of what makes them great players, but it’s not in their own best interests. Continues on next page

Kobe Bryant could still play in China, however unofficially By Kelly Dwyer

os Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant(notes) can’t play in the Chinese Basketball Association this season, whether the NBA’s lockout of its players extends for the rest of this week or the rest of Barack Obama’s administration (second term, or not). The CBA does not want NBA players who are under contract, no matter how accomplished they are, if there’s a chance that they’ll leave should the lockout end during the CBA season. According to HoopsHype.com, that hasn’t stopped Shanxi Zhongyu from attempting to sign Bryant for some exhibition work, or perhaps a simple jaunt through the layup line in warmups. [Related: Five players who should take their acts overseas] That’s right. Shanxi Zhongyu wants to sign Kobe for strictly show-off purposes. Bryant would not be eligible to play in games that count, but he could take part in pregame drills, show off for fans, work up a nice sweat in exhibitions. Circumvent the Chinese Basketball Association legalities all you want, you’re still going to get a basketball-obsessed stud in Kobe. And it’s all legal. Last week the CBA passed a law created to stop NBA players who were under contract for the 2011-12 season from working with CBA teams. The

NBA may have put pressure on the CBA braintrust, and we wouldn’t blame them for that; we also wouldn’t blame CBA executives for asking their teams not to put the league in a compromising position by marketing American stars that may not be around for an entire season. What’s the way around that? Potentially, you pay the heck out of someone like Kobe Bryant (with, possibly, a certain shoe company’s help) to show up and play in your exhibition season. Or, even more tactlessly, practice with your group in full view of cameras with someone like Kobe Bean Bryant amongst the 10 players sprinting back and forth. With the logo showing. And a smile on Kobe’s face. After all, it’s the best of Kobe’s worlds. The man is a basketball junkie, he misses playing, and he’ll be making money for an actual basketball team while keeping his mates at his shoe endorser happy. On top of that, wouldn’t the Chinese Basketball Association team benefit from his presence at a practice? Who loses here? Besides competing shoe companies, of course.

Hines Ward and Head Injuries The evidence strongly suggests that head trauma has a profound effect on players after their football career have ended. To take two recent examples, consider Jim McMahon and Corwin Brown. McMahon, the quarterback of the 1985 Bears team that went 18-1 and won Super Bowl XX 46-10, is one of seven former players suing the NFL for not doing enough to protect athletes from head injuries. McMahon, who admits to memory loss, said that during his playing career, “It was just tape an aspirin to your helmet and you go back in.” A separate group, including O.J. Anderson, Mark Duper, and Rodney Hampton, filed a similar suit in July. Go back further, and there are dozens more examples, some more concrete than others. Among them are Hall of Fame center Mike Webster, whose case Terry Bradshaw has tried to raise attention to via his position at FOX, and former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson, a three-time Super Bowl champion during the Bill Belichick dynasty. Hines Ward, the lifelong Steeler, isn’t persuaded by Bradshaw and Webster. Ward, the guy who lies to doctors, doesn’t buy into the findings from research on the brains of guys like Chris Henry and Duerson. Ward, who chose to drive drunk, also chooses to play football, then parrots the tired line that “nobody is forcing us to play football.” That’s a good point, Hines. Hollywood needed a huge publicity machine and the studios created stars whose public image was completely different to their real selves. Innocent young virgins were actually fast-living sex kittens with a taste for drugs and alcohol. Lovable family men were known for their sexual conquests and more than one hero who made the ladies swoon secretly found young men more to his liking. There is a tendency in all of us to look at the past through rose colored spectacles so its easy to think of Hollywood scandal in terms of modern stars like Michael Jackson or Hugh Grant. However the glittering facade of the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood contained enough juicy scandals of its own. Rape, adultery, alcoholism, drug addiction, murder and suicide, as in the tragic case of failed actress Peg Entwistle, all featured heavily in the supposed innocent days of early Hollywood. Over the decades, the names and faces have changed, but the habits and hungers have always been around. Here are some of the main scandals.

Lana Turner Lana Turner was a statuesque blonde dubbed “The Sweater Girl,” for the way wearing one would highlight her natural attributes. She was a gifted actress, appearing in such successful films as “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” (1941), “The Postman Always Rings Twice” (1946) and “Peyton Place” (1957). But, as always with Hollywood, it was Lana’s tumultuous private life which generated the most attention. She was married 8 times (twice to Steve Crane) and battled alcoholism throughout her life. In 1958, her name was in the headlines in the worst possible way, when her then teenaged daughter Cheryl stabbed to death Lana’s abusive boyfriend, Johnny Stompanato, a small-time hoodlum who had made a successful living as a gigolo. Stompananto was very jealous and possessive of Turner and severely beat her on many occasions. Turner attempted to end their relationship several times, but he always persuaded her not to do so. On the evening of April 4, 1958, Lana and Stompanato

September is my favorite month in “America’s Finest City.” It’s less crowded, the weather is perfect and it’s time again for San Diego Restaurant Week. The event, September 18 to 23, features prixfixe menus from more than 180 of San Diego’s top restaurants. Best of all, this fall there is a new wrinkle: lunch. Just as the three-course dinners feature tri-tiered prices, $20, $30 and $40, the two-course luncheons are offered at $10, $15 and $20. Here are my four candidates for your consideration:

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Isabel’s Cantina

The $20 selection is Isabel’s Cantina in Pacific Beach. This is creative fusion food, combining Latin and Asian cuisines into healthy meals that can be enjoyed by both vegetarians and meat eaters. The casual dining room features comfortable booths and tables, an open-air feeling plus a 15-foot tall Buddha watching over the diners. The wine list is nicely priced and red or white sangria is the house specialty. We were served rosemary bread upon arrival and our choice for an appetizer was the heirloom tomato salad. For our dinner courses we picked chicken tamales and the carne asada tacos; both were served with black beans and rice. Desserts included a flourless chocolate soufflé cake with raspberry puree and bananas cantina in a caramel sauce. Quite a bargain for $20.

The Grill at The Lodge

For the $30 category try The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla. It’s “clubby,” cozy and features an open kitchen and superb views. This is a place that takes beer seriously and I could not have been happier. They feature six locally crafted beers along with three root beers, sarsaparilla and two ginger beers. Don’t miss their home-made chips and retro onion dip. My starter was an outstanding plate of buttermilk fried oysters. For dinner, my wife had the roasted chicken breast with root vegetables and mashed potatoes. My choice was a hanger steak served on a bed of spinach with confit potatoes and horseradish gremolade. Both entrees were picture perfect. Dessert was a kick and, once again, retro. My selection was a root beer float and our second pick was the angel food cake with caramelized pineapple and whipped crème fraiche. Comfy, great food

This is the $40 restaurant selection. Located in the Aventine Center in La Jolla, their award winning wine list features 100 wines by the glass and an extensive bar menu to match. Of course, we were there for their famous hand-cut prime steaks and weren’t disappointed. For starters we chose the mushroom ravioli and a salad with roasted pear, candied walnuts and blue cheese vinaigrette. Parmesan bread was served with two flavored butters — tomato basil and chardonnay. It was an outstanding start. Our entrees were the bistro steak and filet tenderloin. The former was served with a cabernet butter sauce and ratatouille. The filet was served with their house specialty, a potato layered with cream, jalapeños and cheddar cheese. Both steaks were perfectly prepared, the sides excellent and the presentation and service were first rate. Safe travels, bon appetite and enjoy the journey...
