hat are the chances that one girl’s picture would end up in both Afghanistan and Iraq, on two separate occasions three years apart? The answer is, it actually happened…..to me. This is my personal story of how I got involved with our troops, and why I was inspired to produce this calendar to help support them. I’ve always considered myself patriotic. I was raised to believe it is our duty to support our country, regardless of whatever political ideas we might have about war or government politics. But it wasn’t until 2005, that I began to understand just how important the word “patriotic” is and what it really means.

John Elwes

Some of history’s BIGGEST SCROOGES J Paul Getty

J Paul Getty made his fortune during the Great Depression and had controlling interests in over 200 busi-

nesses, including the Getty Oil Company. In 1966, Guinness World Records named him the world’s richest private citizen and he was worth over $2 billion at the time of his death in 1976. But Getty was notoriously frugal and even had a payphone installed at his English mansion. He also famously refused to pay a $17 million ransom when his teenage grandson was kidnapped in Rome in the 70s. After the refusal, the boy’s ear was cut off and posted to a local newspaper; Getty eventually agreed to pay a reduced amount of $2.2 million.

English politician John Elwes is thought to be the basis for that most famous miser, Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The MP, born in 1714, was worth over $390,000 (approximately $28 million in today’s money) but lived like a pauper. He wore threadbare, ragged clothes and went to bed when darkness fell to avoid wasting money on candles, while his home fell into ruins. He died with very few possessions but left his unspent fortune to his two sons born out of wedlock.

store for a cheap meal of meatballs and boiled potatoes.

Hetty Green Henrietta ‘Hetty’ Green, born in 1835, was the richest woman in the world in the 1800s. She died with money and assets worth over $100 million (nearly $2 billion when adjusted for inflation) but during her lifetime she refused to open her pockets to the needy, even if they were from her own family! Hetty’s son broke his leg as a child but she refused to pay for any treatment and instead tried to get him into a free clinic for the poor. For these reasons, Guinness World Records claim that Hetty was the World’s Greatest Miser.

Ingvar Kamprad IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad is one of the richest people in the world, worth around $6 billion, but the Swedish entrepreneur, who moved to tax haven Switzerland in the 1970s, drives a 15-year-old Volvo, flies economy class and recycles his tea bags. The eccentric 85-year-old is also known to visit the restaurant in his local IKEA

Wellington Burt When Wellington R Burt passed away in 1919, aged 87, he was one of the richest men in America with an estimated fortune of $100 million. But the miserly multimillionaire didn’t want his family to get their hands on his money, so he put a ‘spite clause’ in his will that meant the money wouldn’t be distributed until 21 years after the death of his last grandchild! After a 92-year wait, those conditions were finally met in May 2011 and 12 of his descendants, aged 19 to 94, split the estate.

Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie was notoriously thrifty despite being worth nearly $3 billion on today’s money. The Scottish-born businessman, born in 1835, moved to America when he was young and made his fortune in the steel industry. As he amassed millions he became known for his miserly ways and once famously tipped a dime for an extravagant meal. But in his later years he turned to philanthropy and donated millions to world peace and scientific research, and funded over 3,000 libraries across America and the world. 4 December 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

Nearer and closer to our hearts be the Christmas spirit, which is the spirit of active usefulness, perseverance, cheerful discharge of duty, kindness and forbearance! — Charles Dickens, “What Christmas Is as We Grow Older,” 1851

I

wanted to take a moment on behalf of all here at The Military Press in wishing you a very Merry Christmas. As trite and cliched as it inevitably comes across, just wanted to give acknowledgement to the true reason for the season that we should be reminded of as we often lose ourselves in the rampant commercialism and stress of it all. I feel that Christmas is our annual opportunity to re-ignite our compassion for mankind that might hopefully takes us through the next year. A time to realize that we are all connected as one, and that we all need one another. Christmas always reminds me of my dad, he came alive at this time of the year, was jovial and bright, throwing his heart and soul into the spirit of everything that was going on. He’d have us all watching Charles Dickens’ movies so as to remind us of the beauty of giving. As we look back from our perspective of a century-and-a-half, Charles John Huffam Dickens does indeed seem to be what London’s Sunday Telegraph proclaimed him,. . .

piping hot turkey, and family cheer within. Coming from a family large but not-too-well-off, Charles Dickens presents again and again his idealized memory of a Christmas associated with the gathering of the family which “bound together all our home enjoyments, affections and hopes” in games such as Snap Dragon and Blind Man’s Buff, both of which his model lowermiddle-class father, Bob Cratchit, runs home to play on Christmas Eve. Whatever your beliefs be, religious or non-religious, there must be no doubt that there is something in the air reminding us of the good we can do, and the good we can be . We’ll see you in the New Year! – The Military Press

“The Man Who Invented Christmas” Although Dickens celebrated the festival of Christ’s birth in numerous works, it is A Christmas Carol, published on 19 December 1843, that has preserved the Christmas customs of olde England and fixed our image of the holiday season as one of wind, ice, and snow without, and smoking bishop,

Gifts from bad to worst

reat gifts are great for a multitude of reasons, but bad gifts tend to have a lot in common. The worst gifts are not only a poor fit with the recipient’s personality, lifestyle or interests, but also send a negative or critical message. Just plain bad gifts tend to fall into three categories: The useless, the thoughtless and the tasteless. And while the lists of awful items for men and women may be different, they nevertheless fall into one of these diagnostic categories.

If you’re considering purchasing gifts in any of the following four categories for the man or men in your life, think again.

Clothing: While this sounds innocent enough, when the clothes don’t match a man’s style, it can be construed as a suggestion that you don’t like what he wears or want him to up his fashion game. If you don’t have a clue about what the men in your life actually like and will wear, make another choice.

Household bric-a-brac or decorative elements: Items in

this category include everything from a new dish rack to artsy decor items. Such items might send a negative message similar to new clothes, and many men are territorial about their homes and resist outside (i.e., female) advice on decorating. So unless you know exactly what he wants or needs, go back to the drawing board.

Sentimental items: What a woman might call “sweet,” a man

might want to store in the trash can. If you’re tempted to get your husband or boyfriend that cute teddy bear that reminds you of him, or flannel pajamas printed with those same teddy bears, forget it. And forget the book of syrupy love poetry, romantic movies or T-shirts with sappy sayings. He’ll be glad you did.

Psychology or self-help materials in any form or format: This is perhaps the biggest

Appliances: For most women, household appliances fall under the heading of “need” rather than “want,” unless it is a specialty item that you’re certain she has been yearning for.

no-no of them all and sends the biggest “You’re not okay” message. So if you’re tempted to buy your guy a book about improving communication skills, finding a better job or making better use of time, don’t. Enough said. When gifting women, me should also avoid certain gifts.

Lingerie: The principle here is similar to why clothes are a bad idea for guys, but can lead to far more disastrous outcomes. Many men don’t realize that a gift of lingerie is often accompanied by an unintended message. If it’s too small, she needs to lose weight. If it’s too big, you think she’s fat. If it’s too racy, you don’t think she’s sexy. And if it’s too plain, you don’t think she’s sexy. Simply stated, unless you know the exact size and type of lingerie she favors or want to ruin any chances of peace on earth during your holiday season, move on.

Jewelry: Here again, unless you know exactly what the woman in your life wants, skip it. Not only is jewelry something that women prefer to choose for themselves, it can send a message (i.e., overly romantic or not romantic enough) that men don’t realize they’re sending.

Gym membership/fitness equipment: The big no-no. Under

no circumstances is it wise to present the woman in your life with a gift whose underlying message is “Lose weight” or “Shape up.” The all-time worst gift for women? A bathroom scale.

What’s wrong with adultery? By Cal Thomas

W

e live in a bipolar culture. We allow ourselves to be drenched in sexual images in movies, on television and on the Internet and then defend First Amendment protection to even the most graphic of them. Then, when a politician acts out what culture promotes, we criticize him, especially if he’s conservative, branding him with the equivalent of a “scarlet letter.” In our not too distant past, a feeling of shame made people go into hiding after an adulterous relationship was exposed. Now they go on television to talk about the sleazy details. They either deny it (Herman Cain), admit it and say they’ve asked God for forgiveness (Newt Gingrich), or pay no political price at all (space limitations prevent me from listing the legion of politicians that fall into this last category.) Ginger White was on TV last week. She’s the Georgia woman who claims to have had a 13-year affair with Herman Cain. White says the alleged affair wasn’t “sex for cash.” Whew, let’s be grateful for some sense of morality, how-

If we maintain that adultery is wrong, shouldn’t we have an authority for that judgment? Who decides such things? So the wife (or husband) and kids get upset. Isn’t it all about one’s personal choice and happiness? ever thin. In a nation that channels Ado Annie’s lament from the musical “Oklahoma” (“I’m just a girl who cain’t say no”), saying no to anything, including adultery, gets you pegged as a fundamentalist who is attempting to impose his morality on others. How’s our failure to impose anything working out for us? If we maintain that adultery is wrong, shouldn’t we have an authority for that judgment? Who decides such things? So the wife (or husband) and kids get upset. Isn’t it all about one’s personal choice and happiness? For politicians, it goes deeper. Here is the question I wanted to ask former Senator Gary Hart after his alleged affair with Donna Rice nearly 25 years ago: “If we can’t trust you to keep a promise freely made to your wife before God and witnesses, what standard should we use to judge your truthfulness when you make promises to the American people?” It’s not a trick question, but one that goes to the core of an individual’s values and character. What is marriage? Is it something for the convenience of the U.S. Post Office for orderly mail delivery, or is there a Higher Authority behind it? For most people, marriage is a sacrament with “rules” firmly established by God and when followed these rules benefit married couples, their children and society. Among the main requirements of marriage is fidelity. “Forsaking all others” is the phrase contained in the Christian marriage vow. Divorce has become widely accepted (though not to the Author of marriage) as a sometimes “necessary evil,” but adultery remains for most people what it has always been: a betrayal. It’s not just a religious concept. Ask a person who is married but does not believe in God how he or she would feel about a cheating spouse and you most likely would get the same response you would receive from one who does believe in a higher power: anger and profound disappointment. In The Washington Post’s “Reliable Sources” column last week, Roxanne Roberts and Amy Argetsinger asked, “Is an affair still the kiss of death?” That they have to ask the question is another indicator of falling standards. Once, divorce was a political “kiss of death.” Now we are debating whether adultery should carry a similar penalty. One shudders to think what might be next. Ultimately, what voters must decide is this: Does a presidential candidate’s personal flaws rise (or fall) to a level that inhibits his ability to do the job of president? Put another way, if you are about to have surgery, do you care if the doctor is a cad, or do you care more whether most of his patients are alive and well? With the multiple challenges Americans face and with the choices presented to us, if the country is to be made well, voters may just have to sacrifice the ideal for the pragmatic. THE CARRIER CLASSIC

Filmmaker Steven Barber captures exclusive documentary on Carrier Classic By Tamara Henry

F

ilmmaker Steven Barber is on a roll! “Return to Tarawa,” narrated by Ed Harris, and and his film “Unbeaten” have won multiple awards (including Oscar Short List) and the honor to spur Congressional legislation to bring home two U.S. Marines from 1943 with his third film, “Until They Are Home.” To say Mr. Barber hit it out of the park with his fourth film, “Carrier” is an understatement. “I was fortunate to be invited to an exclusive speaking engagement in Los Angeles to hear from from a member of Morale Entertainment on how they were going around the world with special events like the ‘Coaches Tour’ and ‘Astronaut Tours’ to boost the spirits of the troops in Iraq and other overseas hot spots where are young men and women are deployed.” Soon after this serendipitous meeting, Mr. Barber signed on to be the Magic Johnson

exclusive documentary filmmaker for the world’s first basketball game on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. Tim Shelton, executive producer, along with Mr. Barber and cameraman Matthew Hausle, began preparing for what would be an adventure of a lifetime. Permission was granted to do an embark at sea on the Vinson, and Mr. Barber’s production team, Vanilla Fire Productions, went to the flight line in San Diego for the 90-minute flight to the

Vinson for a three-day adventure. “If you have never landed or been catapulted off an aircraft carrier, its definitely something to put on your bucket list,” says Barber. “The adrenaline upon landing and the immediate controlled chaos of the active flight line on the deck, and the intense smell of jet fuel is something to experience.” Landing in the middle of flight operations with 40 F-18 s taking off and landing on both sides of you within in a few feet, is an experience Barber says will stay with him

News forever. The production team spent three days at sea conducting interviews with everyone including crew members, the captain and executive officer, pilots, cooks, maintenance men. “What struck me the most,” said Barber, “was the youth and the courtesy. The average age of a seaman is 22. Captain Bruce Lindsey, the ship’s skipper, pointed out that the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus 20-year-old seaman who was piloting this five billion dollar nuclear aircraft carrier was not able to drive a car a couple of years earlier! The amount of responsibility and work load these young men and women are given is truly life changing for them. The next few weeks, Mr. Barber was in pre-production interviewing Magic Johnson and James Worthy. Barber was also able to bring on a $150,000 sponsorship with the entertainment giant, Relativity Media, with their new film, ‘Act of Valor,’ due out in February 2012. “I saw a great deal of synergy between the Navy Seal-themed film Tom Izzo, Coach Michigan State and the Carrier Classic, and marrying the two was a natural,” said Barber. “I was able to put both Morale and Relativity together in a meeting, and the “Act of Valor” worldwide debut on ESPN was shown on the ship’s big screen and across the planet.” Barber began filming in earnest on the Monday before the Carrier Classic game. It was a very serious production as the President of the United States would be flying in for the event and there were Secret Service sweeps and a military presence that was unprecedented for a sporting event... but this

was no ordinary sporting event. In fact, nothing remotely like this had even been thought of before, and documenting the thousands of people involved from the assembling of the seats to the laying of the first piece of the court was really magical. “To actually be part of an event that was in so many ways a first of its kind and to be hand picked to be the documentary film maker is an honor I will hold dearly for my entire life,”said Barber. ‘The big unknown that everyone was talking about was Actress, Brooklyn Decker the weather as a huge thunderstorm was heading toward San Diego and the word was out that it was going to land on game day! That never did materialize and the weather and the skies were perfect for the event. Barber was able to grab the first interview with legendary Magic Johnson who was an honorary co captain from for Michigan state as James Worthy was for North Carolina. Other interviews of note were with the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, Admiral Moynihan, and Brooklyn Decker who will be featured in the new Peter Berg film, “Battleship!” When the game began, Barber had three cameras going along with the new red camera to capture all of the basketball action. Along with the production was a still photographer who captured the event with thousands of amazing shots. Barber also pulled off a coup by securing a local helicopter to get directly over the Carl Vinson for the only aerial shots and video of the construction process. “It was surreal to get within 300 feet of the carrier, all approved by the Navy,” said Barber. “I wanted to throw a basketball out of the chopper for a three-pointer, but was quite sure the Navy would have frowned upon that!” The world’s first basketball game on an aircraft carrier went off with out a hitch and during half time, 92-year-old Leon Cooper, the star of Barber’s first film, “Return to Tarawa,” was able to meet the President. It was the thrill of a lifetime for the WWII vet. Barber is in post production now assembling the footage and putting together the story. There is interest from several cable companies, and Barber is speaking to several A-list narrators from Pierce Brosnan to Kelsey Grammar. “I am very excited about the finished product’,” says Barber. Rod Luck’s annual Christmas party for the kids On the morning of December 18, 2011, Rod Luck, former KUSITV newsman and San Diego’s “Mr. Military,” will hold his 10th annual “Christmas For Military Kids” at the Hard Rock Café in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Since 9/11, Rod has thrown a Christmas party for kids who have at least one parent deployed in a war zone. Sometimes there will be a dad in attendance, but usually it’s all moms with the kids. There are 50 kids invited again this year. These kids and their families are recommended to Rod through the Armed Services YMCA. The Hard Rock Café has been the host site for this event since the beginning. This year they will provide the breakfast foods, with their kitchen crew and local Marines and Sailors helping. In years past, Rod has funded the party himself. Since he has not worked at KUSI for over three years, he has

The party is typically thrown on Christmas morning, but this year Rod is traveling north to Montana to spend a rare Christmas at home with his family. For the first time in 10 years Rod is providing gift cards rather than gifts for the kids. According to Rod this really is the best way to go: “…I have always liked shopping for the kids. However, what I thought a 3-, 5or 12-year-old might want was usually wrong, even though they all acted as if they liked the gifts. Now they can buy their own gifts, whatever makes them happy. It’s their day… I am just there to make sure they get it.” The party is not open to the general public and limited to the 50 kids supplied by the Armed Services YMCA.

’Tis The Season

E

ach year individuals count down to the first day of winter, be it in anticipation of the new season or with anguish that the warmer weather is a distant memory. The first day of winter is also known as the winter solstice. The winter solstice occurs exactly when the axial tilt of the earth is the farthest away from the sun. The winter solstice features the shortest number of daylight hours and the longest number of nighttime hours. Therefore, the winter solstice is also often referred to as the shortest day of the year for people living in the Northern Hemisphere. The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere also marks the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere, because locations below the equator experience the opposite seasons as in the north due to the tilt of the earth toward the sun. At the extreme poles — the Antarctic circle in the Southern Hemisphere and the Arctic circle in the Northern — there is a different type of phenomenon that takes place. The Arctic circle falls under 24 hours of darkness on the winter solstice, while the Antarctic circle has 24 hours of daylight. Without the tilt of the earth there would be no seasons around the planet. Around the latitudinal lines the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, there really is no fluctuation in season because the sun is never low in the sky — meaning it is always hot and humid. Only those living above and below experience varied seasons. Artificial light can help banish the doldrums associated with the winter solstice. Turning on holiday lights or other accent lighting and candles can create an intimate feeling on this day.

Suicides of active service members as well as veterans are increasing at an alarming rate, many due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A recent study indicates that, on average, a U.S. veteran commits suicide every 80 minutes. Armytimes.com reports that in fiscal 2009, 1,868 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan succumbed to suicide. In addition, hundreds of active service members take their lives each year. In response to this heartbreaking trend, MilitaryFamily.com has developed a free suicide prevention app, for the iPhone called Operation Reach Out for people who may be thinking about suicide as well as family and friends concerned about someone else. The app is currently offered free on the iTunes store and an Android version will be available in the next few weeks. Designed by experts in emotional resiliency, the app has five features: • A Help Center where a single touch of the phone will call a friend, family member, or helping professional (including the National Suicide Hotline). • Video vignettes designed to help people who are depressed see that their problems are solvable and their feelings of desperation will pass. • Video vignettes for people concerned about someone who they believe is suicidal; telling them what they should and should not say. • Suggestions of activities that will help people reach out to someone else rather than suffer alone. • Internet resources including real stories from people who once thought about suicide, but went on to get help. The primary author of the app is psychologist Lawrence Shapiro, Ph.D., a well-known author and internationally respected expert on emotional resiliency. When asked how the app works, Dr. Shapiro explains: “The app is designed to help people who are feeling desperate and alone connect with others. Having powerful resources in your pocket or purse is the surest way to help get help when they need it most. The most important thing the app can do is to redirect a suicidal person’s downward spiral of hopelessness and isolation. Help is available from many places, and we need to find it as quickly and easily as possible.”

Your very own family Christmas Story

Sad to say but some Americans may have forgotten the meaning of Christmas. What I mean is that by Thanksgiving, some have been camping out for a week in order to get the latest deal on the newest gadget or toy. For quite a few of us this is typically our favorite time of year. We love picking out that perfect tree to decorate, seeing twinkling lights for the first time of the year, watching bundled up smiling children ice skate and hearing Frank Sinatra gently soothe our hearts with the sounds of the classic Christmas tunes. The theme of the end of the year should be friends, family, your own personal traditions and ceremonies and just being together to eat, laugh, reminisce and enjoy each other’s company. No batteries should be required. If they must, let the children YouTube Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and maybe even Elvis to teach them a bit of classics. Watch “A Christmas Story” (and let the kids see how punishments used to be — they’ll never look at soap the same again), “National Lampoon’s: Christmas Vacation” and meet the Griswolds (which maybe A LOT like your in-laws), and they’ll learn about helping others and doing the right thing in “White Christmas.” Maybe take a train like in “White Christmas,” bundle up the kids like Randy, teach your kids the “Sisters” routine and let them act it out, help a veteran, go caroling, hold the neighbor’s ladder while he puts his lights up or take the kids to cut down your own tree. And when they go to lick that soap — because we all know the kids will try it after watching Ralphie do it — take a picture! We’ve all been guilty of being a Grinch when things don’t go our way during the holidays but try to remember that even though your husband may be driving you insane and you’re contemplating many ways to retaliate,

Post-9/11 GI Bill assists service members, families

With the New Year around the corner, many people, especially those in the military, might resolve to pursue higher education; recent changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill will make that even easier to accomplish. The most recent round of changes include: paying all public in-state tuition and fees, a $17,500 tuition and fees cap per academic year for private and foreign schools, a housing allowance for students attending college solely via the internet, coverage of vocational/technical training, on-the-job-training, flight and correspondence training, and national testing programs. A part-time job in the Air Force Reserve made a difference. It gave me the time and financial support to continue my education and begin a civilian career. It’s ideal because I wanted to continue to serve but stay close to home. And I discovered the Air Force Reserve is offering signing bonuses up to $20,000. If you’ve served in any branch of military, you can join the Air Force Reserve without repeating Basic Training. I kept my rank as well as the sense of service and teamwork I’ve learned to love. Best of all, I now serve my country from where I choose to live.

Artists rendition of how Lisa might look today

Mary Rachel Trlica, Lisa Renee Wilson and Julie Moseley went Christmas shopping with a promise to their parents that they would return home before dark. They never came back. Today, it’s been 37years since their families last saw the young girls and there are still no leads on them. But this week the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in Alexandria, Va. and Fort Worth police again appealed for the public’s help in locating the girls who were last seen on Dec. 23, 1974 at the Seminary South shopping center. Witnesses told police that they saw the 17-year-old Trlica, Trlica’s 14-yearold friend, Wilson, and Moseley, 9, at businesses in the shopping center. Police even found the girl’s car at the shopping center parking lot. The morning after the girls disappeared, a letter arrived at the Trlicas’ residence, addressed to Thomas A. Trlica, Rachel’s husband. The name Rachel was written in the upper left corner of the envelope. The letter stated that the girls had gone to Houston and would return in about a week. It also give directions to the Trlicas’ car in the shopping center parking lot. Authorities have never determined who wrote the letter. Text of letter: January 11, 2000 Dear Debra, We read your statement in the Fort Worth Star Telegram on January 9, 2000. You indicated that you “had nothing to hide.” If your statement is true, we beg and plead with you to fully cooperate with the Fort Worth Police Department and the FBI. Please complete the polygraph testing and answer all questions. Debra, please keep in mine you also have a sister missing. Respectfully, Rayanne Moseley Rusty Arnold Judy Wilson Richard Wilson

uring this holiday season we get very concerned about the giving of gifts. I imagine you, like me, have spent many hours shopping and then wrapping presents. With all this effort, we hope that our offerings will express the fullness of the feelings we have for the ones for whom we are giving the gifts. Much like those who are serving in far away lands for the world’s freedom, we also tend to look for opportunities to extend ourselves outside our immediate circles. We seek to help the homeless or those less fortunate. Often, we may even try to do special things for others anonymously. When my family has done this on occasion, we have felt that very special feeling of unconditional love that attends such experiences. Pondering this, I get a little saddened however. After all the gifts are given and the wrappings cleaned up, it seems like much of the spirit of gift giving comes to an end until the next year. Those serving their fellow man, such as those in the military and their families know that there is a greater gift to give, maybe that elusive gift, “The gift that keeps on giving,” the giving of ourselves. These are the gifts that can last a lifetime when given. These gifts don’t have to be heroic acts, but can be as simple as giving others our understanding, or exercising patience with habits that may greatly annoy us. We may even decide to quietly do something different in our lives for a family member, who may never even know you were giving them that gift. Such as, being more willing to lend a helping hand or offer a smile, even when we may not feel like smiling. We can share in the pride of another’s recent accomplishment or let pass the opportunity to criticize or talk about another. Emily Dickinson shared this message in the poem, “A Smile as Small as Mine.” They might not need me; but they might. I’ll let my head be just in sight; A smile as small as mine might be, Precisely their necessity. This could possibly even be the year that we, without great fanfare, let go of a hurt or grudge we have held onto far too long. Relating to this Balfour said the following, “The best thing to give at Christmas is forgiveness to your enemy; to an opponent, tolerance to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.” With all that is going on around the world today, Christmas is still a time of year where there is a sense of hope surrounding all the festivities and celebrations, even over the joy of the gift giving experience. We really can help to make the feelings of this season last longer than the snowfall.

Henry van Dyke wrote on this in a piece entitled, “Keeping Christmas” There is a better thing than the observance of Christmas Day, and that is keeping Christmas. Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people and to remember what other people have done for you? To ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world? To admit that the only good reason for your existence is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life? Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and desire of little children? To remember the weakness and loneliness of people who are growing old? To stop asking how much your friends like you, and ask yourself whether you love them enough? To try to understand what those who live in the same house with you really want, without waiting for them to tell you? To make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden for your kindly feelings, with the gate open? Are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas. Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world

– stronger than hate, stronger than death – and that the blessed Life which began in Bethlehem many years ago is the image and brightness of Eternal Love? Then you can keep Christmas. There really is no reason that this feeling of hope and love, this desire and longing for a world filled with greater respect for the whole human family can’t extend beyond the holiday season. I hope we try this season to extend ourselves to others, to help bring about a greater measure of “peace on earth and good will towards men.” As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy… (Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI, Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays. Year In Review

An era is truly known only when it’s over. In 2011, institutions closed shop, government programs ended, others simply moved on. While an era might be a grandiose way to describe the end of, say Borders or “Kate Plus 8,” each finale symbolized, in their own fields, a way of being that wouldn’t happen again. If this were a list of departures based on search interest, media personalities would dominate. In 2011 alone, Keith Olbermann, Meredith Vieira, Katie Couric, Glenn Beck, Vivian Schiller, and Regis Philbin parted ways with their organizations. A ranking of bricks-andmortar business shutdowns would include the Gap and Liz Claiborne. While they were significant, there were other truly momentous shifts across the board. Visionaries, plainspoken ladies, mankind’s leaps into imagination — they stepped down after setting up.

Space: America once ruled the known universe. Now, the same year that Russia celebrated the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight, NASA flew its last space shuttle mission. Technology: The year that Apple became the most valuable company and iPad sales set a record, Steve Jobs stepped down again, and for good. At a

time when disgruntled Joes feel disconnected from their CEOs, people the world over expressed reverence for the late CEO, as they measured his legacy and vision.

ended her 25year reign. Oprah Winfrey did more than redefine daytime TV; she created a movement.

Technology: Saying goodbye to an

old friend is always hard, and in the case of Friendster, you couldn’t help but feel a little guilty over outgrowing your pal for the cooler kids on the block. MySpace was also sold this year, but Friendster will always be the first.

Movies: The Harry Potter series ended in 2007, but the big-screen realization had to happen before fans could say goodbye. And they bid their farewells in record-breaking droves to a bright spot in a largely dreary cinematic year. Journalism: Just when the journalism industry seemed to be stumbling back on its feet, past sins shut down Britain’s oldest newspaper, News of the World, and ended media baron Rupert Murdoch’s dynastic ventures. Daytime TV:

The daytime queen

redefining manhood. As reality TV became, well, more real, the sweet adventures of a modern Brady Bunch became the stuff of tawdry headlines about adultery, divorce, stage moms, and producer manipulation.

Reality TV: “Kate Plus 8” signed off, ending for a moment America’s obsession with reality TV’s original Tiger Mom. “Jon & Kate Plus 8” started in more innocent times, when the most scandalous shows centered around bickering roommates, backstabbing survivors, and a flamboyant quintet

Government: Like any administration, the White House had turnovers. Among the most visible was Elizabeth Warren, who was passed over to head the agency she essentially created. Coupled with the departure of the FDIC’s Sheila Bair, the buzz about the new (female) sheriffs in town died even before it began. But this end had a twist in its ending.

Business: Borders wasn’t just the story of another big business failing. With shopping malls now bereft of a literary presence, what does the disappearance of Borders say about Americans’ reading habits? Is the book dead — or are people on the edge of a reading revival, thanks to digital?

Iraqi withdrawal: The withdrawal date had been set under the Bush administration, and a war-weary nation was ready to leave behind this mission. Yet a homecoming wasn’t welcome by all, as Republicans feared a void would be filled by Iran. 16 December 15, 2011 THE MILITARY PRESS

The event will air live from San Diego, Calif., on Saturday, December 31 at approximately 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT on ESPN, ESPNHD and ESPN3, immediately following the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Levi LaVallee has fully recovered from a crash while training for the same event last year, just hours after shattering the world record with a leap of 361 feet on a snowmobile. Robbie Maddison kickstarted the series in 2007 by jumping his motorcycle 322 feet over a football field in Las Vegas and followed it up in 2008 by jumping onto – and off – the 96-foot-tall Arc De Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas. This year, LaVallee, a 28-year-old native of Longville, Minn., will jump his snowmobile alongside Maddison, a 30-year-old Aussie now living in Temecula, Calif., who will pilot his motorcycle as both athletes concurrently jump over 300 feet of water from the North park to the South park at the Embarcadero Marina Park in the downtown area of San Diego Bay. LaVallee is a seven-time Winter X Games medalist and champion snocross racer. He is widely known for becoming the first person to double backflip a snowmobile in 2009 at Winter X Games. San Diego may not be the first place that comes to mind when discussing snowmobiles, but the lack of snow won’t hinder LaVallee, who will use artificial turf on his run-up path, which will provide the necessary grip for his snowmobile’s track to ensure maximum speed as he hits the take-off ramp. Maddison boasts accomplished freestyle motocross career, with an X Games silver medal in 2010 in Moto X Best Trick and two wins on the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour (Calgary 2009 and Madrid 2010). antos (10-1), is considered the best pound for pound female Mixed Martial Artist in the world. She lives in Pacific Beach with her husband, coach and fighter Evangelista Cyborg Santos. The couple teach and train at The Arena which is just a stone throw away from the Valley View Casino Center. Cris Cyborg has not tasted defeat since her debut on May 17, 2005. On that date while fighting Erica Paes, she lost her balance, fell backwards on her left arm. The mishap resulted in a dislocated shoulder. At the time Paes had grabbed both of Cris’ legs and people figured she had won by a knee bar submission. Paes, who was getting the worst of it up till that time, was estatic to get the win. She lost her next match and then retired. Ever since that freaky loss, Cris has been unbeatable and widely feared because of her relentless, aggressive and technical striking style. Her opponent on December 17 is Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1) from Chiba, Japan. When it comes to like opponents, Yamanaka has a 1-1 record against Hitomi Akano, a fighter that Cris beat soundly. In anticipation of next week’s show, I visited The Arena in hopes of getting an interview with Cris Cy-

We’re proud to have Strikeforce come to San Diego. Especially since we have five of our fighters signed with Strikeforce. Even more exciting is the fact we have two of our fighters (Noons and Cyborg) involved in the main event. Noons is one of the most talented athletes in the sport as well as one of the best strikers in the lightweight division. Cris (Cyborg) is just unreal. She has one of the best work ethics I’ve ever seen. Even though she has had a long layoff, she’s been in the gym every day. I feel

Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the high degree of energy and interaction between the many students. After observing several classes and talking to Jeff Clark, the head trainer, I could understand why the gym attracts so many champions. In complete contrast to your typical cookie-cutter, “fitness” oriented gyms, all their programs are taught by pro or former pro fighters. “Our focus,” said Clark, “is to provide the best and most realistic training that we can while striving to accomplish our ultimate goal: Create one of the best fight teams in the world.

that in the female 145-pound division, she will make her mark just as Tiger Woods has done in Golf and Lance Armstrong did in cycling. Santos at 5’ 8” tall and walking around at 160 pounds, has to train very hard to make the 145 pound weight limit. Because of Cyborg’s domination, the other major challengers in her weight class

have been scrambling to cut weight to land in the 135 pound division. Some people thought Ronda Rousey might be a contender especially with the way her mouth was running. Then after she defeated Julia Budd via arm bar in just 39 seconds at Strikeforce Challengers, the former Olympic Champion stated she had plans to cut weight and drop to that safe haven of 135 pounds to fight people like Meisha Tate and Sarah Kaufman. At that point, the Strikeforce champion who has destroyed all her marketable competition and left Strikeforce’s premiere women’s division void of challengers, entered the gym. Even though we had met just once, Cris Cyborg stopped dead in her tracks and greeted me with a warm, enthusiastic smile. After explaining my hope of doing a quickie interview she agreed without hesitation.

C

hristmas truce was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas of 1914, during the first World War. Through the week leading up to Christmas, parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches. On occasion, the ten-

sion was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides – as well as, to a lesser degree, from French units – independently ventured into “no man’s land,” where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. As well as joint burial cer-

emonies, several meetings ended in carol-singing. Troops from both sides had also been so friendly as to play games of football with one another. The truce is seen as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst one of the most violent events of modern history. It was not ubiquitous, however; in some regions of the front, fighting continued throughout the day,

Military History whilst in others, little more than an arrangement to recover bodies was made. The following year, a few units again arranged ceasefires with their opponents over Christmas, but to nothing like the widespread extent seen in 1914; this was, in part, due to strongly worded orders from the high commands of both sides prohibiting such fraternization. The truces were not unique to the Christmas period, and reflected a growing mood of “live and let live,” where infantry units in close proximity to each other would stop overtly aggressive behavior, and often engage in small-scale fraternization, engaging in conversation or bartering for cigarettes. In some sectors, there would be occasional ceasefires to go between the lines and recover wounded or dead soldiers, while in others, there would be a tacit agreement not to shoot while men rested, exercised, or worked in full view of the enemy. However, the Christmas truces were particularly significant due to the number of men involved and the level of their participation – even in very peaceful sectors, dozens of men openly congregating in daylight was remarkable. The first months of World War I had seen an initial German attack through Belgium into France, which had been repulsed outside Paris by French and British troops at the Battle of the Marne in early September 1914. The Germans fell back to the Aisne valley, where they prepared defensive positions. In the subsequent Battle of the Aisne, the Allied forces were unable to push through the German line, and the fighting quickly degenerated into a static stalemate; neither side was willing to give ground, and both started to develop fortified systems of trenches. To the north, on the right of the German army, there had been no defined front line, and both sides quickly began to try to use this gap to outflank one

A cross, left near Ypres in Belgium in 1999, to commemorate the site of the Christmas Truce in 1914. After several months of fighting, during which the British forces were withdrawn from the Aisne and sent north into Flanders, the northern flank had developed into a similar stalemate. By November, there was a continuous front line running from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier, occupied on both sides by armies in prepared defensive positions.

The approach to Christmas In the lead up to Christmas 1914, there were several peace initiatives. The Open Christmas Letter

was a public message for peace addressed “To the Women of Germany and Austria,” signed by a group of 101 British women suffragists at the end of 1914 as the first Christmas of World War I approached. Pope Benedict XV, on 7 December 1914, had begged for an official truce between the warring governments. He asked “that the guns may fall silent at least upon the night the angels sang.” This attempt was officially rebuffed.

Heard the one about the . . .

Entering Heaven

A Christmas Gift A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, “I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles.” “She did,” he replied. “But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?” Dear __________, It’s me, Mrs. Claus. I was sitting in front of the fireplace making some last-minute alterations to Santa’s red suit and I decided to take a break and write to you. Santa showed me his list, and I can confirm you are on the “nice” side! Good job!

While Santa has been busy getting the sleigh ready for Christmas Eve, the elves have been hard at work in the toy shop. Tonight, I saw they were working on toy trains and cars, and a special gift just for you! Please keep up the good work and listen to your parents. I bet you’re so excited for Christmas! I love spending time with family, and it’s always fun to give and get gifts. Well, I’d better get back to Santa’s suit. He’s put on a few pounds this year so I need to let out a couple of seams, as well as fluff up the white trim. Enjoy the holidays and remember to brush and floss your teeth-especially after Christmas treats. Love, Mrs. Claus

Two Brooms Once upon a time, two brooms fell in love and decided to get married. Before the ceremony, the bride broom informed the groom broom she was expecting a little whisk-broom. The groom broom was aghast. “How is this possible?” he asked. “We’ve never even swept together!”

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. “In honor of this holy season,” Saint Peter said, “You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.” The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. “It represents a candle,” he said. “You may pass through the pearly gates,” Saint Peter said. The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, “They’re bells.” Saint Peter said, “You may pass through the pearly gates.” The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s glasses. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, “And just what do those symbolize?” The man replied, “They’re Carol’s.”

You Better be Good Sarah and her thirteen-year-old sister had been fighting a lot this year. This happens when you combine a headstrong two-year-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent.

Sarah’s parents, trying to take advantage of her newfound interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-yearold that Santa was watching and doesn’t like it when children fight. This had little impact. “I’ll just have to tell Santa about your misbehavior,” the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialed. Sarah’s eyes grew big as her mother asked “Mrs. Claus” (really Sarah’s aunt; Santa’s real line was busy) if she could put Santa on the line. Sarah’s mouth dropped open as Mom described to Santa (Sarah’s uncle) how the two-year-old was acting. But, when Mom said that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. Santa, in a deepened voice, explained to her how there would be no presents Christmas morning to children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better from now on. Sarah, now even more wide eyed, solemnly nodded to each of Santa’s remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a long moment, Mom (holding in her chuckles at being so clever) asked, “What did Santa say to you, dear?” In almost a whisper, Sarah sadly but matter-of-factly stated, “Santa said he won’t be bringing toys to my sister this year.”

Lakers trade Lamar Odom to the Mavericks

The Lakers, who get a first-round draft pick in 2012 from Dallas, lose a versatile big man who was a strong lockerroom presence and last season’s sixth man of the year. By Mike Bresnahan The Lakers made a trade Saturday, but it wasn’t for Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. Two days after getting rebuffed by the NBA in an apparent deal for Paul, the Lakers sent forward Lamar Odom to Dallas for the Mavericks’ first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft. “It’s a done deal,” said a person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly. The Mavericks might also send the Lakers another unspecified draft pick. Chris Paul The Mavericks lost free-agent It was not immediately clear if the forward Caron Butler to the Clippers move was a straight salary dump or a circuitous effort to try to get Howard a few days ago and could comfortably restock the forward position with down the road or, less likely, Paul. Next year’s draft is considered deep, Odom. Howard, the reigning defensive but the Mavericks, the defending NBA player of the year, officially asked champions, aren’t expected to have a for a trade Saturday but early reports high selection. The Lakers lost depth in the front had him wanting to play for the New court and a solid character in the locker Jersey Nets, not the Lakers, somewhat room. Odom, 32, was the sixth man of the year last season after averaging 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds. He is owed $8.9 million this season and $8.2 million next season, of which only $2.5 million is guaranteed. The Lakers also received a tradedplayer exception worth Odom’s salary this season. Trade exceptions are difficult to explain, but the Lakers can obtain a player from another team by trading only a draft pick if the player makes less than $9 million. Teams have exactly one year to use a tradedplayer exception. Acquired by the Lakers in 2004 as part of the Shaquille O’Neal trade, Odom was disturbed to be part of the voided Paul trade and did not take part in practice the first two days of training camp. He showed up at the team’s training facility Saturday only so he could take a physical. A favorite of Lakers followers, Odom was not happy with “the way things had been going” in recent days, according to a person close to Odom who was not authorized to speak publicly. Odom is, however, content to be going to Dallas, the person said, and received a welcoming phone call from Mavericks owner Mark Cuban late Saturday night. Odom found out he was in the initial trade proposal for Paul on Thursday after a reporter from The Times called to ask his thoughts on it. A day later, he was still confused, if not irritated. “To me, I would think it’s better to stay away,” Odom told The Times in a phone interview Friday. “You know, the energy and all. I don’t know how it’s going to go right now. It’s a little weird . Right now, I’ll be a fan of the game from a distance.” For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

Dwight Howard surprisingly. The Lakers, Nets and Dallas were granted permission to talk to Howard’s agent about a trade, but the Nets would have had substantially more to offer than the Lakers if the Paul trade had been accepted a few days ago by the NBA. If the Lakers lost Pau Gasol and Odom in that trade, they could have

offered to Orlando a package of Andrew Bynum and ... what exactly? Howard and Paul can both become free agents next July, forcing their teams to try to work out trades instead of losing the perennial All-Stars for nothing after the season. On Saturday, the Lakers withdrew from the framework of a second offer for Paul, who could now end up with a Clippers team that had expressed interest in him last week. The Clippers could offer center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu, injured guard Eric Bledsoe and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ first-round draft pick obtained by the Clippers in 2005. The Clippers remain adamant about not trading up-andcoming shooting guard Eric Gordon for Paul.

Got yourself tangled ’Tis The Season up in a mess? . . . No worries, Call the King!

Strange but true Christmas crimes

’Tis the season — for crime? Many criminals see the holiday season as their opportunity to cash in. But while many of the crimes committed around Christmas center around theft of presents, there are a few that are so strange that they definitely deserve a special place on Santa’s naughty. Here are a few strange but true Christmas crimes:

Stolen Baby Jesus:

What’s stranger? Stealing a doll depicting what many believe is the son of God, or using GPS and high tech cameras

the perpetrators were tracked down and charge with — vandalism? Yes, Frosty may have been a 12-foot tall inflatable snowman, but does that mean he deserves to be repeatedly stabbed? Absolutely not. The teenage perpetrators were caught in this case, but around Christmas this type of vandalism often goes unsolved.

to protect the display? Regardless of your belief, stealing an important religious symbol for no other reason than to vandalize seems like a very Grinch-esque activity. But then again, having a good excuse to ask Santa for an advanced GPS system has its perks. If you see a vandal robbing a nativity scene of Baby Jesus, and the GPS tracking system hasn’t already done it for you, report the incident to authorities.

Wal-Mart Stampede: People really go wild over Christmas gadgets and gizmos. So wild, in fact, that they behave like wild animals and stampede into large retail stores hoping to get the best deal on the coolest new items. But recently this trend has taken a decidedly less innocent turn, as workers and bystanders have been trampled by frenzied shoppers. This Christmas, remember why we really celebrate the holidays and get your shopping done in a decidedly less deadly fashion.

The Christmas tree is one of the most iconic symbols of the holiday season. In this bizarre turn on a Christmas classic, the Christmas tree was made entirely of illegal marijuana. While it may have looked similar to a normal tree, setting it on fire may have some interesting effects on those nearby. Perhaps it’s not the best idea to use your illegal drugs as your celebration of the holiday season.

Cannabis Christmas Card:

In this strange story, a woman visiting her boyfriend in prison wanted to surprise him with a heart-felt Christmas card. The catch? The card contained a heaping helping of illegal marijuana, which is generally frowned upon in prison. After being caught, she may have an opportunity to join her boyfriend behind bars next holiday season.

Drunken Parade Float Driving: Naughty Santa Claus: Children

Everyone enjoys the Christmas parade. But when this parade float driver sped past another float and raced towards Main street, police knew something was wrong. The driver turned out to be drunk, and the story turned out to be one of the most bizarre Christmas crimes in history. This season, be careful with the eggnog, especially if it’s your job to drive the Christmas float the next day. Nativity Scene Vandalism: Not believing in Santa Claus is one thing. Venting your rage upon carefully crafted nativity scenes by writing satanic symbols with spray paint is another. Watch out this year because police are out in force to protect these displays of peace and love from any number of criminal Grinches.

Frosty Stabbing: Frosty, after surviving two initial stabbing attempts finally succumbed to his wounds while

really enjoy telling Santa what they want for Christmas, and adults enjoy the idea of Santa perhaps just as much. But when Santa starts telling dirty and offensive jokes at the work place (not the North Pole), Santa is going to get a nice pink slip for Christmas. Merry unemployment, Santa. And a happy new harassment charge next year!

The Santa Claus Bandit: Yes, you read that right. A man who looked suspiciously like Santa Claus had become one of the most prolific bank robbers in recent memory before being caught and arrested. We always knew that Santa was independently wealthy, but we never guessed that this was what funded his North Pole operation.

stimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20,000 from some Japanese scholars to as high as 410,000 from some Chinese scholars, but the exact numbers are still being researched and debated. A majority of the women were from Korea, China, Japan and the Philippines, although women from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia and other Japanese-occupied territories were used for military “comfort stations”. Stations were located in Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, then Malaya, Thailand, then Burma, then New Guinea, Hong Kong, Macau, and what was then French Indochina. Young women from countries under Japanese Imperial control were abducted from their homes. In many cases, women were also lured with promises of work in factories or restaurants. Once recruited, the women

were incarcerated in “comfort stations” in foreign lands. Other women were rounded up at gunpoint, some being raped before being herded into “comfort stations”.It has been documented that the Japanese military itself recruited women by force. Some “comfort stations” were run by private agents supervised by the Japanese Army or run directly by the Japanese Army. Some Japanese, such as historian Ikuhiko Hata, deny that there was organized forced recruitment of comfort women by the Japanese government or military. Other Japanese historians, using the testimony of ex-comfort women and surviving Japanese soldiers have argued that the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy were either directly or indirectly involved in coercing, deceiving, luring, and sometimes kidnapping young women throughout Japan’s occupied territo-

“COMFORT WOMEN” FROM KOREA: JAPAN’S WORLD WAR II SEX SLAVES AND THE LEGITIMACY OF THEIR CLAIMS FOR REPARATIONS By Yvonne Park Hsu Abstract: During World War II, Japan forced 100,000 to 200,000.women from all over Asia into prostitution to satisfy the sexual cravings of Japanese soldiers. These women thus forced into prostitution were euphemistically called “comfort women”. In December 1991, three former Korean comfort women filed suit in the Tokyo District Court, seeking damages for their sufferings. From both legal and moral perspectives, Japan needs to make reparations for violations of these women’s fundamental human rights. By meeting the obligations arising from its past abuses of human rights, Japan will take a significant step toward preventing its militant past from re-occurring, fostering protection of human rights in the future and building trust among its neighboring countries. “He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself” - Thomas Paine

You’d wear a backward baseball cap and a t-shirt and in your small hands you’d hold a big placard that would cover three quarters of your frame. The words “Justice for All Comfort Women” would scrawl across your body. And chances are you would be standing before the Japanese embassy in Metro Manila. Or maybe you would be marching before Malacañang Palace. Or standing on the curb down EDSA Boulevard, protesting the President’s State of the Union Address. You might even be standing before the courts in Japan, giving your testimony. But today, we are standing face to face, in the cathedral in Madalag, Aklan – one plane and one long bus ride away from your home in Navotas, Metro Manila. Here we are, on the island of Panay, in a town so small hardly anyone gets international news on television or newspaper and certainly not by internet. We are in the countryside and while you and I have been friends for years now, you have told everyone here that I am your grandchild from the United States. You have told them that I am a writer in search of

My name is Piedad Nobleza and I was born in Madalag, Aklan on August 2, 1920. I was married by the time the war broke out. My husband was a soldier and we had a son and a baby girl. When he left, I took the children from our house in the lowlands and moved them to a safer place. My aunt’s house was hidden high in the mountains. No people passed that way. They brought me here, to this church 50 kilometers from her house. In the church were women from different parts of the mountain, women I had never seen before. That first night the soldiers placed two pews together. Two of them argued who would go first. The first soldier was fair, not too tall, and not too fat. After that, seven Japanese soldiers raped me. They came every half hour. And after that, every night for two weeks, two or four soldiers raped me every night. But I don’t know even one of them. Not even one of them. Then one morning, I woke and all was quiet. The church door was wide open. And because I slept next to the door, I was the first to step out to discover the Japanese soldiers had fled in the middle of the night. So I went back to the house where my aunt shot me a look and did not said anything at all. When I arrived at our house, I sat in the corner, crying and crying.

cathy rankin honors our troops with her new 2012 calender

You see, during this time, when the United States was in the heat of battle in Afghanistan and Iraq, my agent booked me for a photo shoot with Dillon Precision Products, Inc./ Dillon Aero. This company often featured me on the cover of their calendars and monthly publication, “The Blue Press,” which goes to over 250,000 people worldwide, many whom are military personnel or families. One of my covers became so popular that Dillon decided to produce it as a poster, and it sold out immediately. This is what started everything. For some reason, it struck a chord with our service personnel overseas. It ended up in the hands of some troops in Afghanistan, where this wonderful group of brave men flew a flag in my honor at the base and put my poster on their military vehicle and in their office. They designated me an honorary member of their sector, signed the flag and mailed it to me. It was at that moment I knew my heart belonged to these heroes.

fighting in the most horrible situations, and this simple calendar picture somehow represented something so American to them. I can’t begin to understand how and why this comforts them, but somehow it does, and I am so honored to think I contribute to that in any small way. I began to realize my insignificant little pictures were becoming something much more meaningful than I ever imagined. Maybe it is just me who gets chills when I look at these pictures, but I feel such a connection and obligation to our service men and women. I truly believe my picture did not end up overseas by accident. Something bigger was going on here. I cannot tell you how

Cathy portraying HeatherLocklear, 1980s

My pictures are not meant to be provocative so as to offend anyone, but to me, being confident and sexy in a photograph is really, at its heart, about making a statement about freedom and hope in our country’s values and its history and pinup pictures are a part of that. So, this year’s theme - the sexiest one yet - is my interpretation and recreation of famous posters and iconic bombshells of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. I started receiving emails and letters from many of our military personnel and their families, thanking me for keeping them inspired and encouraged. This surprised and humbled me because I’m not convinced I did anything noteworthy. My poster seems so insignificant to what these soldiers do every day. I was flattered and felt a great sense of loyalty, pride and duty to these brave men and women. I know that what I do is meaningless and petty compared to what they sacrifice, risk, and deal with, all in the name of our great Country. So, when I was contacted in 2006 by a retired Marine who asked me to work with his charity, New England Warrior, to help raise money for much needed supplies for the troops, I immediately agreed, and a wonderful partnership was born. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more incredible, I received another email in late 2008. Apparently, that June, there was an insurgent attack in Iraq. The terrorists involved blew up a building, causing American casualties. The building was completely destroyed, burned out and full of rubble, but inside, on a burned and blackened wall, was one item that somehow remained intact - a 2008 Dillon Calendar just hanging there in plain sight, singed corners and all. Most of the pages had melted away, but clear as day, the month of October, which happened to feature my photo, was still there, and completely recognizable. Someone at the scene, I have no idea who, took pictures of the incident and sent them to Dillon because it was such a chilling sight. I don’t know who hung the calendar there in the first place, but once again, here were these brave heroes,

many times I have sat at my computer reading emails with tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my arms. I’ve had parents thanking me for a calendar, when they have lost children in the war. They are always grateful, respectful, positive and so genuine in the face of such heartache. I have enormous respect for all of them. I save every letter I receive in a scrapbook, along with the flag, their pictures and the t-shirts they send me! The only thing I can do to even remotely show my appreciation to these families, is to promise to remind people of what they do, and why we should still care and support them in every way possible, not just in times of war, but in times of peace as well. These men and women are never away from their duty. No matter where you stand politically, or what you agree or disagree with regarding war, we are still Americans, ABOVE ALL, and our troops fighting overseas deserve our gratitude. They see things we don’t. They tell the real stories, not the ones we get from our mainstream media. I have been very enlightened by things I’ve learned from the men and women I’ve come to know. They know what they are fighting for and they believe in it and sacrifice for it without hesitation. When you vote in an election, debate issues with a friend, or even when you get frustrated and criticize or blame the government or a par-

It is the simple American things we send overseas that keep our troops motivated, comforted and reminded of home. It means more than we can comprehend. (And how ironic to think that in Iraq, a country that can severely and physically punish a woman just for showing her arms, legs or face, that a red-blooded, all-American picture of a girl in a mini-dress is hanging in one of their buildings there is something somewhat satisfying about that)! ticular politician, remember, there’s a reason why we are able to enjoy that freedom. We can all learn from our service men and women. So, the purpose of this calendar is to pay tribute to all the branches of our Armed Forces. I wanted it to be a symbol of gratitude, pride, courage and honor for our military, and all patriotic Americans. When the concept of war-time pin-ups was at its height of popularity during World War II, Americans had such a great sense of togetherness and pride in their country above anything else. It was a simpler time. We now live in a different world, and some of those ideals have suffered. My ultimate goal with this calendar is to recapture that feeling,

to remind people of that tradition, and to just brighten the battlefield a little for those who long for home. I also donate the calendar profits to New England Warrior for the wonderful work they are doing. They are now involved in Wreaths Across America for Veterans and raising scholarship money for the children/families of our military personnel, particularly those who had a parent killed in action. I am passionate about this cause, it has moved me and touched my heart and made me a different person. Please look at the pictures, and just reflect and think for a few moments on what our troops do, that most of us would probably never even consider sacrificing.

’Tis The Season

Top feel-good Christmas movies

What a magical time of year it is; lame presents, pressure to decorate, long drives to relatives, indigestion from over-eating, credit card bills. Here are the top best Christmas movies for making you feel good about it all. A Miracle On 34th Street

The movie is much more genuine than this hug, I promise. This slightly dated tale of a department store Santa who claims to be the real thing may seem light and fluffy by today’s standards, but considering it was made in a time when mental disorders were still treated with shock therapy, historical context can add quite a tense layer of hardcore drama. But the scene were Santa gets bubble gum stuck in his beard should relieve some tension.

The Bishop’s Wife

“Hands off.” Starring Cary Grant as an angel named Dudley who uses unorthodox methods to teach religious zealots the true meaning of life, this Holiday classic often slips pass the radar of modern movie watchers. When a local Bishop prays for guidance, hoping the Lord will lead him and give him the funds and focus to complete construction on a cathedral, an angel arrives and hits on his wife. This leads the Bishop into a spiral of jealousy that leads him back to his family. They remade this film in 1996 starring Whitney Houston. It didn’t make this list.

It’s A Wonderful Life

This is called a Catholic Tackle. Most love it, some hate it, but no one can debate its place in the annals of film history and its overwhelming message of love, giving, and America’s ability to fall into complete economic chaos in a single day. When family deaths, the Great Depression, and World War II rudely interrupt his travel plans, George Baily is forced to stay in his quaint hometown of Bedford Falls. When a money mixup pushes his family business to the brink of foreclosure, it takes an act of God to turn things around. He sends a bumbling angel-in-training to alter the fabric of space and time, just to teach George a life lesson. The result is a commanding performance from Jimmy Stewart (who had just himself returned from fighting in World War II) and the greatest sing-along ending ever committed to celluloid. And it all happens on Christmas Eve.

White Christmas

Danny Kaye is finally outed by his coworkers. This Irving Berlin musical was the first to be filmed in the classic Vista Vision and was the top grossing movie of 1954… which means it brought in about nineteen dollars. It’s also the film that’s responsible for convincing the world that Rosemary Clooney was attractive. With its eye-battering Technicolor, toe-tapping musical numbers, and unabashed romance, White Christmas stands as a holiday classic, though it actually steals its name from the song

made famous twelve years earlier in the less popular film Holiday Inn.

A Christmas Story

“Please tell me that’s a candy cane.”

You’ll shoot your eye out, but not after watching this hilarious movie. Possibly the most nostalgic movie ever made, A Christmas Story was written and narrated by Jean Shepherd, a famous essay writer for Playboy magazine. His slightly naughty and satirical edge permeates this family film, making famous the “leg lamp” and “evil Santa” sequences. Highly quotable and highly memorable, this movie is popular enough to merit a 24-hour repeat marathon on cable every year at Christmas.

Military Press: The state of the 145 pound weight class has placed Strikeforce on high alert for new prospects. What can we expect from your challenger from Tokyo? “For Hiroko Yamanaka I’m going to have to be in the best shape of my life. I’d be a fool if I wasn’t ready for this fight and every fight. She might be bringing something new to the table. The more I get into this sport, the more I learn how much more there is to learn. And with every fighter, comes a new challenge.” MP: Who’s been helping you to get ready? “At The Arena, I benefit from a great many coaches, we have it all under one roof and especially from my husband.” MP: Who do you watch to learn from or try to emulate? “I like to watch Anderson Silva, Fedor, Ernest Hoost, and my husband.” MP: What’s your daily workout, regime like? “I get up early for my morning workout. Run five miles. The morning workout last for three hours. Then later in the day I come into the gym and do another two hours. I no longer lift the heavy weights; it’s more of the lighter weights with higher reps.” MP: What about your diet? Has that also changed? Yes, six meals throughout the day, smaller meals, with mostly pasta and boiled potatoes, again to lose the weight. MP: The other sports in which you participated? “I used to play a lot of handball. That’s where I benefitted from a lot of eye to hand coordination. I started in the Mixed Martial Arts when I was nine but I was always playing handball.” MP: Do you miss your family in Brazil? “Very much so, because we’re so close. My husband and I are here because this is where the competition is. The chance to compete at the highest level. When it’s all done, we’ll return home. Most likely end up with a gym so we can continue to teach and settle down with a nice size ranch.”
