WHY DO CANINES LICK? Why do dogs , wolves and coyotes lick is a question everyone has asked themselves at some point. The reasons for licking can vary from one action to another and with each species. Many people think that it is a sign of love or affection while others think it is more so a sign of submission. In some cases, licking may indicate a health problem. There are many reasons as to why your dog licks you and below we will explore some of those.

or less threatening - meaning it should be fine to approach without any kind of aggression. In this sense, licking on its own doesn’t mean too much apart from trying to gain the other individual’s trust or at least show them that you are not a threat. Therefore, it is important for owners to be more aware of these actions and read into them accordingly.

Saliva on wounds

Licking is Natural It is a natural instinct for animals to lick. If you look at the behavior of wild animals, especially carnivores such as the wolves and coyotes, licking young or even other adults is a common practice. It can be seen as a mother tending to her young or as an intermediate step of communication. You may have even heard of the phrase “licking their wounds”. Wolves are predators, but they are also prey animals. This means that they are often hunted by other animals such as lions and bears, so licking their wounds is a way for them to heal without being detected. In this case, licking is much the same as when a cat licks its own wounds. In domesticated dogs, licking can take on different meanings. For example, in less dominant or younger dogs you may see them lick their owner out of affection and submission. In older animals, it can be seen as a sign of respect and an indication to lower yourself slightly in order to show your appreciation. Even with all these differences though, there are some universal truths about why dogs lick humans that we will explore below.

The veterinary professionals recruited 18 dogs with lacerations of various sizes, some were bathed three times a day with a saline solution while others had their wounds bathed in dog saliva three times a day. After four weeks, the team concluded that there was no a significant difference between the two groups so licking alone cannot speed up an animal’s recovery time However, if your pet ever needs any treatment or surgery then it may be required for them not to lick the affected area.

Dogs Lick to Communicate Licking is a way for a dog to communicate certain things to other animals including humans. Research has shown how licking is indeed seen as a form of communication between animals including humans. It can be used within social hierarchies and relationships to show need, desire, and affection. Whether it be a young pup licking its mother or an older dog licking an owner, the actions remain surprisingly similar. What does this mean for other dogs? Well, dogs recognize each other’s scents through their pheromones which are secreted from their saliva, urine, and feces. As such dogs can tell whether another animal is a friend or foe and use this information accordingly (such as marking over an enemy’s scent).

Conclusion By now you should have some idea as to why your fourlegged friend licks you so regularly and the importance behind these actions. Whether it is due to stress or happiness, this action has been observed across multiple species including humans, and does indeed bear significance within a dog’s daily routine. Therefore, it is worth trying to understand the context behind these actions and how they should be interpreted in order to best care for your pet.

For dogs living in social groups though they may also look at how much time another dog spends around them and if they lick them regularly, this tells them that the other individual is either higher up on the hierarchy

The Golden Age of American Auto Design

Towards the end of the 1950s, car makers decided that they wanted their cars to fly. Well, they wanted to make it look like they could fly. America was airbound with passenger planes, and on the verge of space travel. And, in fact, GM designer Harley Earl gives credit to a plane for inspiration to the tail fins he created at the end of the previous decade. The Cadillac 1948 fin styling proved popular, and its use spread to other models in the General Motors family of brands. Soon it was adopted by other manufacturers, with top Chrysler stylist Virgil Exner in particular taking the tailfi0n look on board. As confidence grew in the styling trend, the fins grew larger and bolder. The tailfin era of automobile styling encompassed the 1950s and 1960s, peaking between 1955 and 1961. It was a style that spread worldwide, as car designers picked up styling trends from the US automobile industry, where it was regarded as the “The actual inventor/designer of the tailfin for the

1948 Cadillac was Franklin Quick Hershey, who at the time the 1948 Cadillac was being designed was chief of the GM Special Car Design Studio. It was Hershey who after seeing an early production model of a P-38 at Selfridge Air Base thought the twin rudders of the airplane would make a sleek design addition to the rear of future modern automobiles. Tailfins took particular hold on the automotive buying public’s imagination as a result of Chrysler designer Virgil Exner’s Forward Look, which subsequently resulted in manufacturers scrambling to install larger and larger tailfins onto new models. As jet-powered aircraft, rockets, and space flight entered into public recognition due to the Space Race, the automotive tailfin assemblies (including tail lights) were designed to resemble more and more the tailfin and engine sections of contemporary jet fighters and space rockets. Plymouth claimed that the tailfins were not fins, but

“stabilizers” to place the “center of pressure” as far to the rear as possible and thus “reduce by 20% the needs for steering correction in a cross wind”, Safety issues Tailfins have been criticized as a safety concern, even as a parked vehicle. In Kahn v. Chrysler (1963), a seven-year-old child on a bicycle collided with a fin and sustained a head injury. A case of the same era, Hatch v. Ford (1958), is also prominent in the study of personal injury from parked vehicles. In both of these cases, children were injured by sharp protrusions on parked cars. The plaintiffs lost in both cases. In “Kahn,” the court found that Chrysler was not responsible for anticipating “all the possible ways in which a person may injure himself by falling against an automobile. “In “Hatch,” the plaintiff attempted to rely on a law governing the size and protrusion of radiator caps and grills, which the court said did not apply to tailfins.

W. R. Merz, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations mandated full COVID-19 vaccination for Navy & Reserve service members. This NAVADMIN comes after the release of the Secretary of Defense’s memo instructing military departments to enact this new vaccination requirement for DoD uniformed personnel who are not medically or administratively exempt, and the Secretary of the Navy’s ALNAV message directing the same. “COVID-19 is a readiness issue. As N3/ N5, it is my responsibility to deliver the most ready and capable force. This mandate ensures our ability to reach that goal.” said Merz. Military personnel must be prepared to execute their mission at all times, in places throughout the world, including

where vaccination rates are low and disease transmission is high. “The DoD’s mandatory vaccination policy is the proven way to ensure the readiness and the safety of our naval force, DoD civilian work force, and the American people and our allies and partners. Vaccinating every eligible service member improves readiness and ensures our Sailors and Marines are equipped with the biological body armor needed to protect ourselves from biological threats,” said Rear Admiral Bruce Gillingham, U.S. Navy Surgeon General, Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. While a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine is a new requirement for the Department of Defense, mandatory vaccinations are not. Currently there are 17 vaccines that Continues on page 11>

Chargers Report: Bolts Upset Chiefs, Move To 2-1 in AFC West By Art Garcia (Jr) In a battle between two of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL, Justin Herbert outdueled Patrick MaHomes en route to a 30-24 victory on Sunday. Herbert finished the day with 281 yards, no interceptions and four touchdowns

Although Herbert shined throughout the game, credit has to go to the defense for causing four turnovers, three of which — an interception and two fumbles — ending the Chiefs’ first three drives of the game. The tone of the game was set early in the first quarter when rookie cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. made a spectacular

back-to-back drives from the Chiefs, both of which leading to two of Herbert’s touchdown passes giving the Chargers a 14-0 lead late in the second quarter. Aside from the turnovers, the other key to victory was the offense converting four touchdowns and one field goal in their five trips to the red zone. Entering the game the Bolts ranked No. 31 in red zone scoring (30%), scoring just three touchdowns out of 10 trips to the red zone in the first two games of the season. Wide receiver Mike Williams had two touchdown receptions on the day and is benefitting the most in this new scheme under offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Drafted seventh overall in the 2017 draft, Williams has thus far failed to be the impact player the team was hoping to get when they selected him that high. However, Williams is off to the best start of his five-year career with 22 receptions for 295 yards and four touchdowns in the first three games this season. There

were question marks surrounding his future with the team prior to this season, but if Williams continues to dominate his position throughout the season look for the Chargers to offer him a significant extension before he hits the market at the end of the year. The Endzone: If the Chargers have any hope of competing for a playoff berth they must improve their dreadful run defense. Entering the game against the Chiefs they were allowing 162 yards per game, which was the fourth highest in the league. The Chiefs ran the ball 30 times for 186 yards averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Although two out of the next three games are at home against the Raiders and Browns, the Chargers will likely play in front of hostile crowds at SoFi Stadium. With both teams having a rabid fan base who are known to travel well to opposing venues, look for the crowds in those games to appear similar to week two where it was estimated Cowboys fans filled 70% of the stadium in the Chargers’ home opener.

Patrick MaHomes

— the fourth being a four-yarder to Mike Williams to put the Chargers ahead with :32 on the clock. MaHomes finished with 260 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The win was Herbert’s first in head-tohead competition facing MaHomes and marked the fifth time in Herbert’s young career where he led his team to a comefrom-behind victory.

diving interception at the Chargers five yard line to thwart the Chiefs opening drive. The interception was his second of the season, his first came last week against the Cowboys and earned him the Pepsi Zero Sugar NFL Rookie of the Week. Despite going three-and-out following the interception, cornerback Tevaughn Campbell would force two fumbles on

Farmer Jones Picks Up Supplies One day, farmer Jones was in town picking up supplies for his farm. He stopped by the hardware store and picked up a bucket and an anvil, thenstopped by the livestock dealer to buy a couple of chickens and a goose. Now he had a problem: how to carry all of his purchases home. The livestock dealer said, “Why don’t you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?” “Hey, thanks!” the farmer said, and off he went. While walking he met a fair young lady with rather large beautiful breasts. She told him she was lost, and asked, “Can you tell me how to get to 1515 Mockingbird Lane?” The farmer said, “Well, as a matter of fact, I’m going to visit my brother at 1516 Mockingbird Lane. Let’s take a short cut and go down this alley. We’ll save half the time to get there”.

The fair young lady said, “How do I know that when we get in to the alley you won’t hold me up against the wall, pull down my skirt and ravish me?” The farmer said, “I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, 2 chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?” The young lady said, “Set the goose down, put the bucket over the goose, put the anvil on top of the bucket, and I’ll hold the chickens.”

In a tiny village lived an old maid. In spite of her old age, she was still a virgin. She was very proud of it. She knew her last days were getting closer, so she told the local undertaker that she wanted the following inscription on her tombstone: “Born as a virgin, lived as a virgin, died as a virgin” Not long after, the old maid died peacefully, and the undertaker told his men what the lady had said. The men went to carve it in, but as the lazy no- goods they were,

they thought the inscription to be unnecessarily long. They simply wrote: “Returned unopened”
