A patriotic display of 50 Star Spangled Banners will fly day and night along the Miramar National Cemetery’s Avenue of Flags thanks to the hundreds of hours volunteers spent working on the project. Their effort was backed by generous monetary donations from individuals, veterans’ organizations and civic groups. The flagpoles and flags were purchased with $103,300 provided by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors with funds from Supervisor Bill Horn’s discretionary Neighborhood Reinvestment Fund. The Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation coordinated the project. Volunteers from the Marine Corps Air Station, the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), the San Diego Young Marines, and Boy Scouts of America, along with a number of civilians, provided some 1,000 hours of labor over the course of two months. Foundation Board Member Jeff Simonides supervised the volunteer work, while his company, Triple S Electrical, donated labor and materials for the installa-
Service-disabled Veteran-owned Small Business Outreach to be held at Camp Pendleton Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest will host a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) Outreach for qualified veteran owned firms at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on Feb. 28. The Department of the Navy SDVOSB Program was formed in response to the requirements of the Veterans Benefit Act of 2003. This procurement program was created to enhance business opportunities for small business concerns owned and controlled by service-disabled veterans and provide federal contracting assistance. “NAVFAC Southwest continues to seek qualified SDVOSB firms to participate in our requirements,” said Linda Ryan, NAVFAC Southwest deputy for Small Business Programs. “This outreach provides an excellent forum to find those firms.” The term “service disabled” as defined by the Small Business Act public law (P.L.) 106-50 of 1999 means, with respect to disability or death, that such disability was incurred or aggravated, or that the death resulted from a disability incurred or aggravated, in the line of duty in the active military, naval, or air service. The outreach will occur at the South Mesa Club at 202850 San Jacinto Road on Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. It starts at 8:00 a.m. “This is an excellent chance to learn
more about available business opportunities and to network with large businesses,” said Ryan. “Attendees will also be able to meet representatives from NAVFAC Southwest, other federal agencies, prime contractors, as well as state and local government agencies.” Registration is required for this no-cost event at the following web link: http://goo.gl/eN8Wr. For further information contact Kim Bourgeois at (760) 763-7345.

Military News At age 71, former Marine crosses nation to raise money for injured Marines Rick Hermelin will trek more than 3,000 miles on an ElliptiGO (an elliptical powered bike) from Parris Island, South Carolina to San Diego to support the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and raise awareness about the benefits of physical fitness. He will start the trek on March 23 and intends to finish on June 30, 2012. Hermelin will be self-supported for the crossing and hopes to raise at least $10,000 for the fund. Rick served in the Corps from 1959 to 1963 as an Aviation Communications Technician, but it wasn’t until later in life that he developed his love of running. Over the course of 35 years, from 1976 to 2011, he completed
100 marathons, 100 half-marathons, and 100 10K runs. Having reached this incredible milestone this past June, he started looking for a new challenge. “I had thought about running across the U.S. before,” said Hermelin, “but I wasn’t sure if my body would hold up for the entire journey. Plus, it would take me about six months.” That’s when one of his clients suggested he try the ElliptiGO. Anyone interested can follow Rick’s blog at http:// www.100daysforthecorps.wordpress. com. New Online Enrollment Application Available for Servicemembers The Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with the First Army at Camp Shelby, Miss., to launch a streamlined version of its online application for VA health benefits (VA Form 1010EZ) for Servicemembers returning from deployment. VA will introduce it at demobilization sites nationwide by early spring 2012. “This online application demonstrates VA’s commitment to work with the Department of Defense to make it easier for Servicemembers to get the care they earned by their service,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “The new, online system noticeably reduces the paperwork and reduces a 10-day process to three days.” The application is used to enroll in the VA health care system, which has more than 1,000 sites of care across the country.
Enrollment for VA health care is done as part of a Servicemember’s demobilization. The online form allows the application to be completed during a regularly scheduled briefing for all Servicemembers on VA benefits. Quick enrollment is important for returning troops because recently discharged combat Veterans are eligible for five years of cost-free care and medications for conditions potentially related to combat service. The new application was piloted as part of the demobilization process at Camp Shelby. Based on the results, VA plans to collaborate with DoD to offer this online application at all 61 demobilization sites nationally. For more information, Servicemembers may contact VA at 1-877-222 VETS (8387) or visit VA’s health eligibility website at www.va.gov/healthbenefits
Miramar Paintball Park
By Charles Espinosa Yes, it’s true. For the first time in the history of San Diego, there is a paintball park nestled in a secluded corner in the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. This unique park has it all, including a large staging area with three recreational fields that include a Deadwood Western Town and a Base Camp military-themed field, plus two more fields in the planning. The park has been open for a year over which a great array of players of all levels have played. The fields are not notably large like some others that I have played. However, a totally tactful plan of playing needs to be applied to each different field. Smaller tighter quarters are a totally new approach than speedball or woods ball. The worth of souls
W
ith this month celebrating the lives of two of our greatest presidents, it is an appropriate time to consider this topic. A while back, I saw a film that reminded me of a vitally important truth, “The worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” The movie is out in our local video stores and is called “The Legend of Johnny Lingo”. It has one of the best messages I have seen in a very long time. I had actually seen an old, shorter version of the film by the same name many years ago when I was a young teenager. But seeing this new movie version reminded me of the sweet and poignant messages contained in it. This movie tells the story of a young Polynesian girl who had been told all her life that she was ugly, stupid and worthless. A shrewd and famous island trader, Johnny Lingo, knew her when they were children and had always loved her. He returns to the island after being away for years, and asks her father for her hand in marriage. According to island tradition, he must bargain for her by offering her father so many cows to compensate him for giving up his daughter. The most beautiful women bring 4, or at most 5 cows, and few think this homely girl will not be able to bring more than a couple chickens. The villagers think Johnny is crazy when they hear he has offered eight cows for this woman they all regard as worthless. But Johnny sees her inner beauty and wants her (and all those who had once mocked her) to have a lifelong reminder of her true worth as a person. After many months, they return from their honeymoon and everyone is stunned by the transformation that has occurred. The once timid, hiding girl has blossomed into a truly beautiful and beaming woman. People all over the islands marvel and don’t quite understand how this once ugly girl had become such a lovely and poised beauty. It was truly the magic of how she felt about herself as a result of being treated as though she were priceless, beautiful and cherished. Treating others with that kind of respect is an imperative and timeless virtue. Most of us have been taught that we ought to “treat others as we would like to be treated.” We even call it the “Golden Rule.” What it really involves is showing all people proper respect. Respect expresses the dignity of people from all walks of life and is our inherent God given birthright. Are we living up to this “Golden Rule” of life? First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at a United Nations Commission on Human Rights meeting asked, “Where does it all begin?” Then answered, “In small places, close to home—so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person: the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.” Everyday we are handed numerous opportunities to treat others as Mrs. Roosevelt encouraged. We have the ability to show others how we esteem them, how we respect their opinions or ideas. We can and should choose to show kindness
and speak kind words over the cutting sarcasms that are so prevalent today. We see horrific examples of this on TV daily. If we would show a little humility and not be so prideful and express forgiveness over holding onto hurts, we would all feel the joys God intended for us more often. As we show these to the ones closest to us, our families and especially our spouses, we provide a much more peaceful and cherished environment for all. We all could take a special lesson away from this film; again I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already. Studies in psychology do also

bear this out. It has been shown that how you treat a child will profoundly affect that child in his or her ability to live a happy, healthy life. If you constantly tell people that they are stupid, or in the military a “dirt bag”, or some other disrespectful name, they will live up to that expectation. However, if you treat a person with respect and encouragement, with words of praise for their talents, abilities or actions, the person will begin to internalize those comments and live up to your descriptions. Let us not be responsible for making another child of a loving God (no matter what the age) feel that he or she is anything less than golden. They are precious in His sight and should be in our eyes, as well. A poem by an unknown author that shares this message is entitled,
gratefully that I often did stop and play with the not so pretty little girl in my forth grade class, when others wouldn’t have anything to do with her. I don’t know if it made a difference to her, but I know how it made me feel to show her the kindness and respect others wouldn’t. A few years ago I saw a picture of this now grown woman in a class reunion book. She was like the girl in the movie. She had become a beautiful woman with a man who must have treated her as such by her side. I was truly happy for her. It has been said that we should strive always to be like a good watch— open faced, with busy hands, pure gold, well regulated, and full of good works, especially toward others. In closing I’ll share this poem by Barbara Werrett Nielson entitled,

“Critique”. “A Diamond in the Rough.” A diamond in the rough is a diamond sure enough, And before it ever sparkled it was made of diamond stuff. But someone had to find it or it never would be found, And someone had to grind it or it never would be ground. But it’s found, and when it’s ground, and when it’s burnished bright, That diamond’s everlastingly giving out its light. O teachers of our folk! Don’t say you’ve done enough. It may be your rudest is A diamond in the rough.
This topic really hits home with me. One of my doctoral writings was on the healing power of this simple but powerful act of human kindness. I am thankful that I had been taught this from an early age. I remember
I wonder sometimes what we’ll all look like, When we cross that invisible threshold, And shed this phony drape of made-up, Costumed flesh and bones. I think that only then, We’ll clearly see, The beauty of those we thought so ordinary. And we’ll see we often judged so wrong, When we all critiqued with our bodies on.
As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings” and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy…(Isaiah 40:31) Until next issue, may God bless you and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI.

Military History
military history of african americans
The military history of African Americans spans from the arrival of the first black slaves during the colonial history of the United States to the present day. There has been no war fought by or within the United States in which African Americans did not participate, including the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the World Wars, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as other minor conflicts.
Revolutionary War African-Americans as slaves and free blacks, served on both sides during the war. Black soldiers served in northern militias from the outset, but this was forbidden in the South, where slave-owners feared arming slaves. Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, issued an emancipation proclamation in November 1775, promising freedom to runaway slaves who fought for the British; Sir Henry Clinton issued a similar edict in New York in 1779. Over 100,000 slaves escaped to the British lines, although possibly as few as 1,000 served under arms. Many of the rest served as orderlies, mechanics, laborers, servants, scouts and guides, although more than half died in smallpox epidemics that swept the British forces, and many were driven out of the British lines when food ran low. Despite Dunmore’s
promises, the majority were not given their freedom. Many Black Loyalists’ descendants now live in Canada. In response, and because of manpower shortages, Washington lifted the ban on black enlistment in the Continental Army in January 1776. All-black units were formed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts; many were slaves promised freedom for serving in lieu of their masters; another all-African-American unit came from Haiti with French forces. At least 5,000 African-American soldiers fought as Revolutionaries, and at least 20,000 served with the British. In 1798 when the United States Marine Corps (USMC) was officially re-instituted, Secretary of War James McHenry specified in its rules: “No Negro, Mulatto or Indian to be enlisted”. Marine Commandant William Ward Burrows instructed his recruiters regarding USMC racial policy, “You can make use of Blacks and Mulattoes

The USMC maintained this policy until 1942.
U.S. Civil War The history of African Americans in the U.S. Civil War is marked by 186,097 (7,122 officers, 178,975 enlisted) African American men, comprising 163 units, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and many more African Americans served in the Union Navy. Both free African Americans and runaway slaves joined the fight. On the Confederate side, blacks, both free and slave, were used for labor, but the issue of whether to arm them, and under what terms, became a major source of debate amongst those in the South. At the start of the war, a Louisiana Confederate militia unit composed of free blacks was raised, but never accepted into Confederate service. On March 13, 1865 the Confederate Congress enacted a statute to allow the enlistment of African Americans but fewer than fifty were ever recruited.
Indian Wars
From the 1870s to the early 20th century, African American units were utilized by the United States Government to combat the Native Americans during the Indian Wars. Perhaps the most noted among this group were the Buffalo Soldiers.
World War I The U.S. armed forces remained segregated through World War I. Still, many African Americans eagerly volunteered to join the Allied cause following America’s entry into the war. By the time of the armistice with Germany on November 1918, over 350,000 African Americans had served with the American Expeditionary Force on the Western Front. Most African American units were largely relegated to support roles and did not see combat. Still, African Americans played a notable role in America’s war effort. One of the most distinguished units was the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Harlem Hellfighters”, which was on the front lines for six months, longer than any other American unit in the war. 171 members of the 369th were awarded the Legion of Merit.
Integration of the armed forces On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981 integrating the military and mandating equality of treatment and opportunity. It also made it illegal, per military law, to make a racist remark. Desegregation of the military was not complete for several years, and allblack Army units persisted well into the Korean War. The last all-black unit wasn’t disbanded until 1954.

Vietnam War The Vietnam War saw many great accomplishments by many African Americans, including twenty who received the Medal of Honor for their actions. African Americans during the conflict suffered casualty rates slightly higher than their percentage of the total population. In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson presented the Medal of Honor to U.S. Army Specialist Five Lawrence Joel, for a “very special kind of courage— the unarmed heroism of compassion and service to others.” Joel was the first living African American to receive the Medal of Honor since the Mexican– American War. He was a medic who in 1965 saved the lives of U.S. troops under ambush in Vietnam and defied direct orders to stay to the ground, walking through Viet Cong gunfire and tending to the 12th AD soldier with German prisoners of war, April 1945. troops despite being shot twice himself.
Korean War Jesse L. Brown became the U.S. Navy’s first black aviator in October 1948. He was killed when his plane was shot down during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. He was unable to eject from his crippled F4U Corsair and crash-landed successfully. His injuries and damage to his aircraft prevented him from leaving the plane. A white squadron mate, Thomas Hudner, crash-landed his F4U Corsair near Brown and attempted to extricate Brown but could not and Brown died of his injuries. Hudner was awarded the Medal of Honor for his efforts. The U.S. Navy honored Jesse Brown by naming an escort ship after him—the U.S.S. Jesse L. Brown.
Post-Vietnam to present day In 1989, President George H. W. Bush appointed Army General Colin Powell to the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, making Powell the highest ranking officer in the United States military. Powell was the first, and is so far the only, African American to hold that position. The Chairman serves as the chief military adviser to the President and the Secretary of Defense. During his tenure Powell oversaw the 1989 United States invasion of Panama to oust General Manuel Noriega and the 1990 to 1991 Gulf War against Iraq. General Powell’s four-year term as Chairman ended in 1993.

NBA Trade Rumors and News Roundup
By Charles Joel Yahoo! Contributor Network
With only five weeks until the NBA trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and New Jersey Nets are all generating significant trade buzz. Presently, it seems that the Lakers and Nets are one and two in the race for Dwight Howard, although there are conflicting reports as to who is in the lead. Some assert that Howard is genuinely interested in sporting purple and gold in 2012, while others maintain that he is set on moving to Brooklyn with the Nets. In Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, the Lakers have two more valuable trade chips than the Nets, because New Jersey would not be able to include Deron Williams in a trade package for D12—part of the Nets’ appeal for Howard is the ability to play with Williams. The Lakers, however, are not the only team in L.A. scrambling to make moves in the next month. The Clippers recently signed Kenyon Martin, are interested in acquiring J.R. Smith and
Pau Gasol are reportedly willing to trade PG Mo Williams. Below you will find the latest trade rumors and news from around the league, including details on the previously mentioned deals: • Ken Berger of CBS Sports: “Despite assertions to the contrary, the Lakers remain firmly on Howard’s list of three teams he’s asked to be traded to, along with the Nets and Mavericks, multiple people familiar with the situation said. The Lakers’ clear preference is to trade Pau Gasol in a Howard deal and not Andrew Bynum, who was

Sports News elected as an All-Star starter for the first time this week. League sources say Nets officials have remained in constant communication with Deron Williams and are encouraged by the All-Star point guard’s improved take on the franchise’s outlook. Though everyone involved acknowledges the Nets’ dilemma: If New Jersey is unable to land Howard, it will be difficult to persuade Williams to join the team in Brooklyn next season. One league front-office source described the Nets as being in wait-and-see mode.”
• Alex Kennedy of Hoopworld via the ESPN True Hoop Network: “The Nets are the front-runners. I do think he ends up on the Nets, at some point. I’ve been told by people in Dwight’s life that he will be on the Nets, it’s just a matter of how and when. Brooklyn’s part of the draw, he definitely wants to go to a large market. Him and Deron are getting closer, which helps. He wants to create a legacy of his own without being a second fiddle… he wants help, but he wants to be the face of the franchise. Deron has done a good job selling it: ‘you can be the face of the franchise.’ Deron realizes that Dwight is a top-3 player in the game. He (Dwight) and Kobe had a conversation and Kobe basically told him ‘you can come in here and be the third option behind me and Pau Gasol. You can be our Tyson Chandler and play defense and rebound.” • Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times: “The Clippers, still not done dealing after signing Kenyon Martin on Friday, will pursue guard J.R. Smith after the team he plays on in the Chinese Basketball Assn. finishes its season and he becomes eligible to play in the NBA, said a person not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.”

But the organization will try to accommodate Nash’s wishes if the 37-year-old foundation of the franchise decides he’d like a chance to compete for a championship with a contender. ‘It’s really on him in terms of what he wants to do or not do,’ a person with knowledge of the situation said. Nash, who turns 38 next week, will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.” • Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports: “The Los Angeles Lakers have talked with the Cleveland Cavaliers about possibly acquiring guard Ramon
Sessions, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. No deal is imminent, but the Lakers view Sessions as a candidate who could help their depleted backcourt. The Lakers are without injured guard Steve Blake, and have relied heavily on rookies Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris to play behind 37-year-old Derek Fisher. The Lakers have an $8.9 million trade exception, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks for Lamar Odom, to absorb salary. Sessions makes $4.3 million this season and has a player option for $4.6 million for the 2012-13 season.”

the nuclear threat Continues from page 1
The United States has informed Iran that if it continues along the path of nuclear armament, we will eventually stop them. When you think of the Middle East and the proximity of Iran to Israel along with the fact that Iran has made it very clear it wants to wipe Israelis off the face of the map, one understand Israel’s desire to strike first. Other Arab countries that want Iran to comply with the United Nations are being completely ignored. Israeli officials have said the missile testing site in Iran, destroyed in a huge explosion three months ago, had developed missiles with a range of 6,000 miles aimed at the United States. “That’s the great Satan,“ invoking the term Iran often uses to describe the United States.
“Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury.” – Mahmoud Ahmadinejad In the past, the U.S. and its intelligence agencies have made mistakes, i.e. claiming that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. We hope that the coordination between our intelligence agencies has improved to provide better information as to the status of nuclear weapons being prepared to be used on Israel, the U.S. and possibly other countries. We do not know who has the most power and influence on Iran’s decisions to strike out at other nations! Is it the imams or is it president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who will make the decision. In years past, we have witnessed the arrogance and the ignorance that Ahmadinejad has expressed in front of the U.N. when he gave his speeches on how his country feels and will react to any other nation that disagrees with his policies. The hostilities and disagreements between Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Syria, and all other Arab nations has been going on for over 60 years. There have been numerous attempts by the United States, Britain and other nations to resolve the differences between Israel and the other Arab nations. One

This man wanted peace! of the brightest and bravest to achieve peace in the Middle East was Egypt’s Anwar Sadat. This great man and many others have been assassinated by terrorists who continually stir up the hatred and violence between the Mid-east countries. The U.S. has been a staunch ally of Israel and for good reason. Without a country that has acted as the buffer between the Middle East and the west, Iran would eventually take over the entire region just as Iraq started to do. This diplomatic nightmare will be
a continuing problem until either Iran accepts the resolutions of the United Nations or is destroyed by Israel and its allies. The U.S. has the capabilities today to eliminate our dependency on foreign oil but the mighty oil companies supplying the environmental groups with false information and tons of money which will eventually destroy America ! The oil companies are not owned or controlled by the U.S. and could care less who leads the World as they know they can buy off any WORLD POWER!!!!

With unemployment at over 9% and no spark of hope for the economy to improve, what will the fate of the U.S. be? Are we under siege and losing our place as the leader of the free world? By Richard Matz
O
ne of the toughest choices in this upcoming presidential election is which candidate to vote for. America is no longer voting for the best man or party to do the job of running this country. We now must choose between which person or party will do the least damage to the country. We realize now that President Obama has done little to nothing to improve the jobless situation in this country. We are deeper in debt than ever in our history — a decline begun by George Bush and carried forward by Obama. Who has the ability to put this country on the right track and back to financial stability? The man that will become president will have to make every American understand that this country can no longer support any foreign country that is in debt. We can no longer support Americans that are on welfare and have been so for generations. We must devise a plan where these people are held responsible and must go to work. The money saved in benefits will help eliminate the debt that they are part of. Every politician will point to one or two aspects of our indebtedness and they will never eliminate the debt until we rid ourselves of all corruption (in and out of government)! Americans are complacent and feel that no matter what party is in office, government is so controlled by special interest groups and lobbyists that nothing will ever change. When will it get better? Will it be when this nation becomes no better than a Third World country and we have to have a revolution to resolve all the problems we live with now? The politicians of today, in order to get elected, must cater to the unions and all nationalities. If we do not devise a new party that only recognizes the constitutional rights of all Americans and eliminates catering to or bribing of our elected officials, we are doomed to repeat the history of some of the other world powers. In order to form a new People’s party we must use every means of communication to form a government of the people by the people and for the people. The spoken and printed word is still the mightiest force in our armory. Silence can no longer be conceived as golden. We must, as the strongest nation in the world, lead the way by establishing a free and uncorrupted government. In order for any person to feel free we must eliminate all corruption and greed in nations, governments, and the few corporations that are large enough to threaten our society by means of their wealth. The things that I now talk about seem Robert Kennedy Nelson Mandella
14 February 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS
“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” – John F. Kennedy to be an unobtainable, unreasonable and impossible mountain to climb. But if enough people throughout the world and especially in the United States take back control of their governments by uniting under the rules and regulations set forth in our Constitution, we will succeed! Everyone has a different view on how we can resolve our problems but we must join together in a common cause — liberty, freedom and justice for all. We need more people like Mahatma Gandhi, John and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. Just think about this: all these men have been murdered or locked away because they believed in this common cause. Most of the media and the people that work in the industry are afraid to voice their true opinions. Is it because their jobs are at stake? We need someone to start a new political party that will not be supported by lobbyists, unions, nationalities or special interest groups. What we need are people who feel the same way as I do and if someone will form that party and except no more than $100 dollars from any source, we can build this nation back into the nation that everyone admired and wanted to be part of. I’d like to hear your thoughts, please e-mail me, Richard Matz, publisher of the Military Press for the past 35+ years, at rmatz@militarypress.com. Martin Luther King Jr. Mahatma Gandhi

car sharing is a whole new adventure car2go, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation, offers an innovative mobility solution that is redefining individual transportation in rapidly growing urban areas by offering a fleet of several hundred environment-friendly smart fortwo vehicles for carsharing. Unlike traditional carsharing programs, car2go meets the daily needs of members by providing a free-floating network of vehicles that is truly available on-demand for point-to-point trips. Members can use car2go with or without a reservation, for as long as they would like, without having to commit to a return time or location. Charges are based on minutes used and include fuel (or electric charging), insurance, parking and maintenance. “We have designed car2go to be convenient and flexible, to meet the demands of everyday life, and to fit the lifestyle of our members,” said Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of car2go North America. “It is as easy as having access to your own vehicle, and in some cases, like in densely populated downtown areas such as San Diego, it can actually be easier. car2go fills the gap between where you are and where you want to be.” car2go currently operates in San Diego (California), Austin (Texas), Vancouver (British Columbia), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Lyon (France), Vienna (Austria), and Ulm, Hamburg and Dusseldorf (Germany). In November 2011, car2go launched the world’s largest all-electric vehicle carsharing fleet in the cities of San Diego and Amsterdam with the deployment of 300 car2go smart fortwo electric drive vehicles in each city. The innovation and environmental sustainability of car2go has earned international acclaim: In September 2010, car2go was recognized by the Austin Chamber of Commerce with the “2010 Greater Austin Business Award” for its positive impact on traffic in the city. The same month, car2go received the “Clean Tech Media Award” in the category of “Mobility” in Berlin. In May 2010, car2go was honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with its prestigious “2010 EPA Clean Air Excellence Award.” Further information on car2go is available at www.car2go.com.

Most of the equipment shown in this book is very scarce and is pictured in full view and detail. Robert Rosenkrans was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1956 and began collecting World War II military items in 1967 shortly after moving to southern Arizona with his parents. Growing up next to an Army post and having his father as a World War II veteran gave Robert a passion for military history. Dogs were always part of the house when he was growing up, so joining the U.S. Air Force and becoming a Law Enforcement K-9 handler seemed the thing to do for Robert. Robert was in the Air Force form 1979 through 1983. After returning home form the Air Force, Robert decided to open an army navy surplus store with his father’s help. Robert and his father successfully ran the store for eighteen years before selling it. Robert then started an online business with his wife, Maria, and has been running it for four years, dealing mainly with collectable military items. Robert has collected U.S. Military war dog items from World War II since enlisting in the Air Force, and he hopes this book will inspire other historians to get the collecting fever. This book sells for $49.99 and can be purchased through the publisher at www.schifferbooks.com, your local bookseller, as well as numerous online retailers. 20 February 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS

Celebrity scandals of the ’70s, part 1
Hanoi Jane Celebrities are much better off trying to save rainforests or raise money for diseases. In 1972, Jane Fonda visited Hanoi, Vietnam during the midst of the Vietnam war. In addition to being photographed on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft battery, repeating North Vietnam propaganda she later called returning POWs liars for claiming they had been starved, tortured and brainwashed.
The King is dead The image of Elvis’ death -- a bloated singer dead on the toilet, surrounded by pill bottles -- has become cliche, but the mystery surrounding those circumstances made it scandalous in 1977. The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was actually found on the floor of his suite, not in the bathroom, and even today autopsy results point more toward a heart attack than a drug overdose. Either could be possible, considering Elvis’ overindulgences in food and pharma. The public refused to indict him for those flaws. In an image familiar to those who watched the proceedings around Michael Jackson’s funeral, Elvis fans flocked to Memphis and clogged the streets around Graceland with their vigil. The King was reburied within Graceland after a thwarted attempt to steal his corpse less than two weeks after his death.
I haven’t got you, Babe While riding high as two of television’s top variety stars, Sonny and Cher had big marital problems behind the scenes ... suggesting her frequent putdowns of him might not have been just for the cameras. Ultimately, they divorced in 1975. Though their show was still drawing big ratings, they went their own ways professionally as well as personally, launching separate series.
Studio 54 no more
Missing an ‘Angel’ No one saw it coming -- certainly not the show’s producers -- but after she became an immediate icon during the first season of “Charlie’s Angels,” Farrah Fawcett announced she wouldn’t be back, since she had designs on launching a movie career. Thanks to something called a contract, the series’ makers had designs on a lawsuit; it was settled with Fawcett being freed as a regular on the show, though she had to return in a number of guest appearances as Jill Munroe.
From 1975 to ‘78, Studio 54 was the club to be seen at in New York City. Famous clientele included Mikhail Baryshnikov, Salvador Dali, Halston, Debbie Harry, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Liza Minelli, Brooke Shields and Andy Warhol. The party came to an end in 1978 though when the FBI busted in and during a search found two sets of accounting books, more than $500,000 stashed in trash bags and cocaine hidden in the walls.

The boss gets on the CB radio to check if hes all right.”Ive got a problem, Boss. Im stuck ere. Ive hit a pig!””Ah well, these things happen sometimes,” the boss says. “Just drag the carcass off the road so nobody else hits it in the dark.””But hes not dead, boss. Hes gotten tangled up on the bull bar, and Ive tried to untangle him, but hes kicking and squealing, and hes real big boss. Im afraid hes gonna hurt me!””Never mind,” says the boss. “Theres a .303 under the tarp in the back. Get that out and shoot him. Then drag the carcass off the road and come on home.” “Okay, boss.”Another half an hour goes by, but theres still not a peep from the young fella. The boss gets back on the CB. “Whats the problem, son?””Well, I did what you said

Why does a round pizza come in a square box? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours? Why is “bra” singular and “panties” plural?
Smart enough to be a real salesman A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet dachshund along for company. One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long the dachshund discovers that he is lost. So, wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having him for lunch. The dachshund thinks, “OK, I’m in deep trouble now!” Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by, and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with
his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here.” Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. “Whew,” says the leopard. “That was close. That dachshund nearly had me.” Meanwhile, a monkey, who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here monkey, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine.” Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back, and thinks, “What am I going to do now?” But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet ... and, just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says.................. “Where’s that darn monkey? Sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard.”
