Muhammad Ali drew the crowds, charmed the media and stole the show. But while Ali is deservedly remembered as “The Greatest,” it was Joe Frazier who defined what being a fighter was truly about. Frazier, who died Monday in his Philadelphia home after a fight with liver cancer, is inextricably linked in boxing history with Ali. They competed in two of the most sensational bouts of all-time and defined an era with their fearsome rivalry. Ali had nearly all of the physical advantages, but in the fight that remains the most significant in the sport’s history, it was Frazier who threw perhaps the perfect left hook to knock down Ali in the 15th round, punctuating a victory on March 8, 1971, in what will forever be remembered as “The Fight of the Century.”

Commentary

Herman Cain’s gauntlet By Cal Thomas

When it comes to sex, the media apply different standards to Republicans and Democrats. Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton allegedly trolled for women, using state troopers as his procurers. As president, Clinton engaged in oral sex with Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. He lied about it under oath and was impeached, though later acquitted by the U.S. Senate. Other sexual accusations tainted Clinton, including one that he raped one Juanita Broaddrick. That “everybody lies about sex” and “it was just sex” and didn’t affect his public responsibilities, were just two of the exculpatory statements from Clinton’s Democratic defenders. James Carville slimed Paula Jones, one of Clinton’s accusers, by saying you never know what you’ll find “when you drag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park.” Many other Democrats in modern times have been caught with their pants down -- JFK, John Edwards. Some paid a political price. Most did not because their policies were favored by the liberal media, which gave them cover. Now it is Herman Cain’s turn and the rules have suddenly changed. Cain stands accused of sexually harassing two women more than a decade ago when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Many in the media wolf pack have already judged him guilty because he updated his initial statement denying the allegations. And yet The Washington Post, in association with Politico.com -- which broke the “story” -- routinely updates its online pages when new information comes to light. Is Cain, a relative media novice, expected to have instant and total recall of events that may or may not have happened more than 10 years ago? The way this works is, if you can’t give the media immediate and detailed answers to their questions, they “raise new questions” and then when you do provide them additional information they say you should have provided it before and must be covering something up, prompting even more questions. One cannot say what, if any, political motives the anonymous female accusers might have, or even if they helped bring these charges to Politico. So much of this is subjective. What is known is that a charge of sexual harassment is not proof that sexual harassment occurred. This story also has a noxious odor of racism about it. Historically, perhaps the worst stereotype directed at AfricanAmerican men is that they are oversexed and constantly on the prowl for female conquests. Cain’s candidacy has unnerved the Washington political establishment. I have just finished his book “This is Herman Cain!: My Journey to the White House.” In it, I learned that Cain is a self-made man who achieved success without gov-

ernment and without self-loathing. He is the enemy of big government, and of Democrats’ “can’t do” condescending attitude toward minorities. Cain exudes a positive and optimistic spirit. Were Cain to become president, this “CEO of self” would threaten the political and economic prison liberal Democrats have built to keep disenfranchised minorities down and voting for Democrats for fear their government programs will end. Cain has a better way and he writes about it in his inspiring personal story, which is the embodiment of the American Dream. This is why Cain is being excoriated by the liberal left. Even some in the Republican establishment wish he would just go away. There will be more on this as reporters and tabloids throw money at Cain’s accusers, seeking to get them to talk in violation of their termination agreements. If you’re wondering why more qualified people don’t run for office, consider what is being done to Herman Cain. People don’t want every mistake or bad decision they’ve made trumpeted from the rooftops and so they avoid politics to the nation’s detriment. Cain may ultimately triumph over these allegations. On Monday Cain recorded his biggest fundraising day ever, netting $400,000. Still, the best defense is a good offense and what would be best for Cain is for him to get all the facts out, immediately, before his enemies do it for him.

Politics of personal destruction II By Cal Thomas

In 2007 when she was running for president, Hillary Rodham Clinton told a fundraising event in Carson City, Nev., “I sure don’t want Democrats, or the supporters of Democrats, to be engaging in the politics of personal destruction. I think we should stay focused on what we’re going to do for America.” Clinton’s husband, the former president, used the phrase at the time of his impeachment proceedings for lying under oath about a sexual dalliance in the White House. The politics of personal destruction is nothing new. It has been around from the beginning of the country when worse things were said about presidents and presidential candidates than have been alleged against Herman Cain. After more than a week of innuendo, hearsay and rumor about alleged incidents of sexual harassment when Cain was president of the National Restaurant Association, the country on Monday was presented with one woman, a former employee at the NRA’s educational foundation, by none other than powerhouse attorneycamera hog-defender of disgruntled porn stars, Gloria Allred. At a New York news conference, Allred (who, according to the Federal Election Commission, contributed $1,000 to Hillary Clinton and $2,300 to Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign) introduced Sharon Bialek, who read a statement that sounded as though a Democratic Party activist had written it. Bialek claimed Cain touched her inappropriately when she went to him for help in getting her old job back with the educational foundation. Bialek provided some details that included what she wore during the alleged encounter, what Cain was wearing and the name of the Washington hotel where she met Cain in the bar for drinks. As proof of Bialek’s veracity, Allred presented two “declarations under penalty of perjury,” which she did not give to reporters, from two people to whom Bialek said she told her story. The Cain campaign immediately issued a statement calling “All accusations of sexual harassment against Mr. Cain completely false.” When the media and their Democratic Party allies have finished driving a stake through Cain’s heart, they will turn to other Republicans who threaten President Obama’s quest for a second term. If their effort at burying Cain succeeds, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich will need to watch out. Rick Perry has already felt their heat and if his campaign ever gets off life support the attacks against him will resume. The credibility of big media continues to erode. The Washington Post reported a loss of $6.2 million for the quarter ending September 30, in part because of “continued deterioration in its newspaper and online publishing division.” The public has found other ways to get its news. The fading establishment media blame the Internet for their decline, but growing numbers of the public -- not only conservatives -- view the onslaught against Herman Cain as unfair, unwarranted and inconsequential, given bigger issues facing the country. The question for many of them is why didn’t the media conduct themselves in a similar way with Barack Obama? Why, for example, has Obama still not released his transcripts from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law School? Near the end of his inspiring book, “This is Herman Cain!: My Journey to the White House,” Cain writes as if he is already president: “In contrast to my predecessor, I am not a community organizer advocating radical social policy with which to manipulate whole segments of the population. I am a community energizer who emphasizes the necessity for individual self-motivation.” In that one paragraph we see what troubles the media and their Democratic Party brethren. If more people currently dependent on government became motivated, self-sufficient and independent of government, it would threaten the foundation of the welfare system that currently has 15 percent of the country addicted to food stamps. And so, not just Herman Cain, but what he stands for must be destroyed, lest the government “addicts” be liberated and vote Republican. Even if Cain does not win the Republican nomination (and how about the voters deciding that, not the media?), he’s proven that he has backbone. Cain the gospel singer should consider warbling Stephen Sondheim’s “I’m Still Here” because he still is, for now.

THE RUM DIARY T

he story involves a journalist named Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to work for a major newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Set in the late 1950s, the novel encompasses a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the Americans who staff the newspaper. Thompson himself traveled from New York to San Juan in 1960 to write for an ill-fated sports newspaper on the island. Thompson had unsuccessfully applied to work at the larger Englishlanguage daily called the San Juan Star while novelist William J. Kennedy was the editor. While in Puerto Rico, Thompson befriended many of the writers at the Star, providing the context for The Rum Diary’s fictional storyline. Although Thompson was only 22 when he wrote the story, it deals extensively with a fear of “going over the hill” and growing old. The prominent characters are typical of Thompson’s work; violent, maniacal and alcoholic, stumbling through life. It is written in a highly paced and rather exciting style, also typical of his work. Thompson told PBS talk show host Charlie Rose in 1999 that he had given up the novel because it had originally “bounced about seven times - I got the standard list of rejection letters - and I came back from South America and I got into

the politics of the 60’s and 70’s, and it was a full time job.” He then said that he revisited the book because “it’s got a romantic notion...that and money.. and I was faced with the fact of having to dig out my 40-year old story...I can’t change it, like, ‘ye gods, this is me, this is the world I lived in’...so I approached it as a writer...it’s a good story.”

Top Military Plastic Surgeon – Doctor William Seare of Clinique Sculpture: Carlsbad, California

D

octor William Seare is Board Certified in Plastic and Orthopedic surgery with over thirty years of experience. He has worked developed a wide variety of medical and plastic surgical technologies and holds 11 patents and over thirty published articles. Dr. Seare recently relocated from Utah, and has opened Clinique Sculpture a ‘”state of the art” facility close to Legoland offering affordable, aesthetic, cosmetic and plastic surgical procedures. Dr. Seare specializes in cutting-edge aesthetic procedures at affordable prices, and over 50% of his practice is for military service persons. “My experience helping military men, women and their families meet their weight loss goals, make their measurements and transforming their overall appearance including natural fat transfer to the breasts has been amazing.” says Dr. Seare.

Awake Anesthesia – Why is your awake anesthesia the choice for the majority of our procedures, specifically liposculpture procedures? “The advantages are many and significant,” says Dr Seare. “Awake Anesthesia is our preferred method because of the additional risks and expense associated with general anesthesia, like longer recovery, potential side-effects and reactions to the very powerful anesthetic agents, like the Popofol that Michael Jackson received. With Awake Anesthesia, we can also sit or stand our patients during and after the procedure to make sure the symmetry and contours are what we planned. The patient can also get a look at the results during the procedure and give their input resulting in much greater patient satisfaction.” MicroLipo vs. the Others – What is the best technology to use with the greatest skin tightening and greatest percentage fat removed with the quickest recovery: SmartLipo®, Laser, Vaser®, BodyJet®, TickleLi-

po® or MicroLipo? “Definitely MicroLipo.” Other surgeons tout the use of these and other technologies saying they are the latest craze. “Not so” says Dr. Seare. “There are risks associated with the laser technology including SmartLipo® and Vaser® including full-thickness skin burns, nerve damage and increased scar tissue in the areas treated, decreasing the effect and smoothness of the fat removal, and does very little for fat removal or skin tightening. I have used all of these technologies and have even revisited many of them recently; they just don’t do the job.” “We have found that if we remove fat in micro-pieces about the size of a grain of rice, taking the time and effort to remove up to 90% of the fat, we can get amazing transformations. In the extreme, I have taken up to 15 pounds of pure fat, 15 inches off a single umbilical measurement, with a change from 25% to 10% BMI according to the military’s own measurements. During your consultation, we carefully go over our preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative plans. We work very hard and spend the time so that our patients are fully educated and informed about their options, and can make the right decision about the procedure that is best for them. Going through this process allows definitely allows me to do the procedure that’s best for my patients,” noted Dr. Seare. As an industry leader, Dr. Seare has many stand-out differences that set him above the rest of a growing crowd. Dr. Seare indicates, “Another major area where I offer something unique is the percentage (up to 90%) of fat removal and amazing skin tightening. The results are instant and dramatic. There is absolutely no comparison with the techniques we use to any of the others. We can also take the fat we have removed and transfer it to the to the face, breasts or buttocks with our Autologous Fat Grafting (AFG). These combinations can create a whole new look with improved body contours.” While there may be many options when it comes to choosing a doctor for aesthetic, cosmetic procedures and plastic surgical procedures, it is clear as a leader in field, Dr. Seare, will continue to provide groundbreaking and powerful new procedures to improve his patient’s overall outcome and experience. Dr. William Seare operates out of the beautiful state-of-the-art officebased, outpatient surgery center, Clinique Liposculpture, located in North County San Diego, California. ing for divorce after only 72 days is a shockingly brief amount of time to make such a decision. But Kim is not the winner in the short celebrity marriage sweepstakes. Not by a long shot.

Weeping Wife or Money-Grubber? By Liz Smith

Just the other day we were chortling over Miss Kardashian’s lament that a “lack of privacy” was causing a wee bit of strain on her shiny new wedlock. Damn that lack of privacy. And she has tried so hard to be unobtrusive. Now it’s over. Now, some of you might think fil-

THERE ARE also historical curiosities such as Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine who stuck it out for 38 days. (In her autobiography, Ethel devoted one page to Ernie, one blank page.) And Elizabeth Taylor’s first marriage was her shortest – nine months with Nicky Hilton, even though he was beating her up all the while. But let’s get down to the wire on brevity after the “I do.”

And the quickest cut of all -- in the 1920s, Rudolph Valentino and Jean Acker – six full hours. (The silent screen sheik’s PR people had to work overtime, trying to explain to a much more innocent public why Rudy, or Miss Acker, were so, ah, dissatisfied.) Of course, none of the above marriages netted the bride millions upon millions of dollars in profits on the “sale” of a reality show “marriage” itself. Nor does it seem any of the marriages were entered into with such brazen cynicism. Drug-addled minds, sex-infatuation, loneliness and even a desperate desire to get away from one’s parents (Liz Taylor) could be cited, but not sheer, money-grubbing publicity. No, not even Zsa Zsa. Still and all, today’s TV viewers and magazine readers seem infatuated with non-stars like Kim. So we can safely assume she will make more millions when she allows the reality TV cameras into the courtroom. She is no doubt being advised to cry on the stand. That’ll probably be worth five mil right there.

Health & Fitness WHY NOVEMBER IS “LET’S GET UP AND GET MOVING” MONTH November is here and if you haven’t been physically active lately – or at all - this is a good time to get into the exercise mode. “Obviously, we should exercise regularly, regardless of the month or season,” says Israel LoBue owner of Fit Body Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. “However, if you have not been physically active in the past, November is a great time to kick-start a fitness routine.” LoBue points out four compelling reasons why you should get active right now: November is a SAD time of the year: Daylight Savings Time ended on Nov.6, which means shorter and darker days will trigger a seasonal depression commonly known as SAD in an estimated 4 to 6 percent of Americans; another 10 to 20 percent may experience a milder form of a winter-onset depressive disorder. One of the best ways to combat the blues is through regular exercise, shown in many studies to effectively reduce anxiety and improve mood. November is American Diabetes Month: Nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes, with another 79 million at high risk for developing it. By controlling your weight and lowering the risk for heart disease – both common conditions in people with type 2 diabetes - exercise can prevent or delay the onset of this illness. November is the start of “eat, drink and be merry season:” Okay, so holidays are still weeks away, but many people get an early start on the celebrations. With Halloween behind us, Thanksgiving around the corner, and Christmas and Hanukkah not far away, how many pounds will you gain this year? All the more reason to get a head start on your exercise routine, so that you can control the extra weight you might pile on if you are not careful during the holidays. What kind of workouts will be most beneficial? “Mix it up!” LoBue suggests. “Do a wide variety of exercises that invigorate your mind and body, while burning calories and fat, and increasing your heart rate. You’ll be in great shape by the time December rolls in – and, hopefully, after that as well.”

Flu Season Is Here

– Don’t delay, get the flu vaccine right away If you’re 65 or older, the flu prevention message for you this year is simple: Get the flu shot as soon as you can. There’s no need for two shots like last year -- just one shot will help protect you for the 2010-11 flu season. This year -- and every year -- health officials urge you to get the seasonal

flu vaccine as soon as it’s available in your community. Older adults are at greater risk of serious flu-related complications (like pneumonia), hospital stays and dying from the flu when compared with young, healthy adults. This is because the body’s ability to fight illness drops as you age. In fact, each year about 9 out of 10 seasonal flu-related deaths and more than 6 out of 10 seasonal flu-related hospital stays in the United States occur in people 65 years and older. This year, there is only one vaccine for the 2010-11 flu season. “This year’s flu vaccine will protect against the

Health & Fitness 2009 H1N1virus that caused so much illness last season and two other influenza viruses,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service and CDC’s Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “One of which is an H3N2 virus, which usually hits older adults harder. And having one flu vaccine will make it easier to get the protection you need against flu all season long.” Flu vaccine supplies are expected to be plentiful, but you should get the flu shot as soon as it’s available, as the timing of influenza circulation is unpredictable and sometimes starts in the early Fall. This year, you also have a choice in dosage for the flu vaccine -- a regular vaccine and a higher-dose option are available for people 65 years and older. The higher-dose vaccine may cause more mild side effects than the regular vaccine as it may result in a stronger immune response. These mild side effects may include pain and redness where the shot was given, headache, fever, and muscle aches. CDC has not shown a preference for either type of flu vaccine because both vaccines will provide protection against flu this season. Talk to your doctor about which vaccine is best for you. For more information about the dangers of flu and the benefits of the flu vaccine, talk to your doctor or nurse, visit http://www.cdc.gov, or call CDC at 1 800 CDC INFO (800 232 4636).

Great stuff for every man

I

’d been bantering back and forth with Melissa, a lovely PR rep out of New York, she’d been sending me info on a mens line of grooming products called ‘Every Man Jack’ and thought it might make an interesting news piece for our paper. I was intrigued by the name of the line and the retro packaging design that for some reason made me think of the time when ‘Stetson’ was a popular mens cologne. After visiting their website I discovered that this look had been inspired by an old Mexican bottle of Tequila; guess inspiration can come from the most unusual sources. So Melissa mailed a few samples over and insisted I give it a try. I’m probably not the best candidate to review grooming products. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a rugged masculine retrosexual that thinks all he needs is a bar of carbolic soap for everything from bathing to brushing my teeth, it’s just I don’t spend a lot of time on my appearance and personal grooming although I certainly should give it a try. The box arrived containing a body bar, body wash, shampoo, shave cream, face lotion and what I thought might be the pièce de résistance, the hair thickening cream . . . as a man out of his prime with thinning hair, this might just put me back in the game! I’m hooked. Now my daily routine begins with Every Man Jack, I especially like the shaving cream, the shampoo and the body wash. The fragrance is subtle, fresh and masculine, though I think they should certainly add more mint into the products that they say contain signature mint as I could barely smell it and I love mint. I’ve enjoyed my experience using Every Man Jack so much that as soon as the complimentary samples had run out I had to stop at my local Target store and buy more. As far as the hair thickening cream goes, of course I was being overly optimistic, nothing short of a miracle could help my situation, it kinda gave me a bouffant Liberace thing going on. The retail price of all the products is extremely reasonable, a lot of them around the $4.99 range. Every Man Jack is sold at Target stores nationwide., which is great for me as I avoid shopping malls like the plague. Every Man Jack is definitely worth the experience. For more information visit www.everymanjack.com From now on don’t call me Trevor, call me Every Man Trevor!

Surfer teaches wounded warriors to ride to live

Randy Henniger was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer at the age of 30. As a young husband and father of two young boys, he was told he had only a 30 percent chance of survival. After surgery to remove part of his colon and rectum, resulting in a permanent colostomy, Henniger dedicated himself to many special causes including work as a surfing instructor for service members who have lost limbs or faced other debilitating health problems. Henniger has developed customized coaching and training techniques to help wounded service men and women to take up surfing for fun and exercise. The Military Press asked Randy about his program. What got you interested in surfing? My sons wanted to learn to surf when they were 10- and 12-years-old, and our neighbors offered to take us out to San Onofre using some of their old gear. They pushed us into a couple of gentle SanO rollers and we stood up and were hooked. We’ve enjoyed surfing as a family activity for over 15 years and now that the boys have grown into men and have their own lives, surfing is one of the things they are willing to make time to do with “dear old Dad” What motivated you to teach surfing to Wounded Warriors and cancer

guidance and hope for survival. I find that giving back to other survivors helps me answer the sometime nagging question… “Why me Lord?”

Above, Randy Henniger. Left: Group of warriors attend surf lesson. patients? Since I learned to surf as an adult and cancer survivor with a colostomy, I was able to appreciate what other adults and people with different physical issues (I don’t use the word limitation, for those are only in our heads.) I enjoyed introducing others to the fun of surfing, especially kids and families together and got quite a bit of experience giving “intro to surfing” lessons. Then in 2005, our youngest son, Joshua was wounded in Iraq while serving with the Army’s 184th “Blackhawk” unit. His recovery from a serious injury and getting back into surfing gave both of us a real insight into the challenges faced by our Wounded Warriors on their return. We connect-

ed with the Balboa Medical Facilities rehab unit and began volunteering at their Thursday morning surf camp at Del Mar Beach. It was such are rewarding experience to share our teaching experience with the marines, soldiers and sailors. My activities with cancer patients are more focused on “buddy” program through various cancer charities and patient advocacy groups like Colon Cancer Alliance (www.ccaliance.org), Great Comebacks (www.greatcomebacks.org), American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) and local hospitals. When I went through treatment for cancer 26 years ago, I did not have a “buddy”, someone who had been through it before and could provide

Were you able to identify better with wounded warriors after beating cancer? I think the key for me to identifying better with wounded warriors was participating in our son’s recovery from his injuries in Iraq. Josh was wounded just 3 days short of the completion of his one year tour, receiving serious injuries from a mortar attack while in country. He almost lost his foot, and the recovery was painful and sometime impersonal After receiving his Purple Heart and discharge from Madigan Army Hospital at Ft. Lewis in Washington, we went back into the ocean and it was amazing to me how quickly he recovered by doing something he loved and enjoyed. The chronic pain in his leg seemed to vanish when Josh was out in the water surfing. So when we heard about Balboa Naval Medical Center promoting surfing and kayaking and swimming as part of their rehab/recovery program, we just jumped right in. Steel Magnolias of the Corps

Comforts of home during the holidays

According to the local stores, it is the holiday season and has been for weeks! I am so behind on everything! So it should be said while busily planning the activities to come in the next month or so, please remember those who cannot attend and won’t be able to sit at the table with you. Sometimes people can be overwhelmed with the task of putting a care package together. Let me reassure you that your thoughts and efforts do not go unnoticed. The time, energy, money and thought put into the care package can be daunting. Please know that those guys sometimes share with their brothers and sisters so you aren’t only touching one life, you’re can make a difference across the board wherever your Marine is. Besides phone calls, care packages give the men comfort from home and hugs when we cannot be there to do so. They provide not only food and snacks but also smiles when we send motivating items of support and love from home. Maybe send him a picture of your beautiful turkey last year he massacred because he got too electric knife happy. Whether you’re sending cake in a jar, a small cut out of a turkey, Adam Sandler’s Thanksgiving song, a Santa suit or Covert Thread socks to keep their feet comfortable and toasty it all boosts their morale. Any Marine will tell you receiving mail is another way to feel connected to the family they left behind back here in the states and the more the merrier for all. Make them laugh! Letters are great, drawings from children, newspaper clippings, sports reports, gossip magazine news about things like the Kardashian catastrophe to deter the mundane tasks of daily deployment life all assist with combating loneliness and stress. Care packages can be as simple as fresh, clean T-shirts, socks and underwear with maybe some of that Halloween candy staring at you to eat it; to as complex as your imagination can think of with gravy in a jar, turkey jerky, cornbread in a jar, apple pie in a jar, and all the fixings cleverly arranged in a box of love. These guys can miss home this time of year so before you grab that apron try and stop by the post office on your way to buy Tom the Turkey. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Questions or comments? Email us at Military Press at keepinformed@militarypress.com! You can also follow my blog @ http://therealhousewivesofthemarinecorps.blogspot.com/

Special extra earnings for military Since 1957, if you had military service earnings for active duty (including active duty for training), you paid Social Security taxes on those earnings. Since 1988, inactive duty service in the Armed Forces reserves (such as weekend drills) has also been covered by Social Security. Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for your military service from 1957 through 2001 can be credited to your record for Social Security purposes. These extra earnings credits may help you qualify for Social Security or increase the amount of your Social Security benefit.

A part-time job in the Air Force Reserve made a difference. It gave me the time and financial support to continue my education and begin a civilian career. It’s ideal because I wanted to continue to serve but stay close to home. And I discovered the Air Force Reserve is offering signing bonuses up to $20,000. If you’ve served in any branch of military, you can join the Air Force Reserve without repeating Basic Training. I kept my rank as well as the sense of service and teamwork I’ve learned to love. Best of all, I now serve my country from where I choose to live.

BURT REYNOLDS

12050 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City: in March of 1994, actor Burt Reynolds was exiting this Super Crown bookstore in the Valley (near CBS Studio Center, where he filmed his series “Evening Shade”), carrying a box of books, when he was accosted by two muggers. The attackers knocked Burt down, but Reynolds (who was wearing a cast on his arm at the time) got up and decked one of them. The two would-be robbers fled empty-handed.

Will Rogers Memorial Park, at 9650 Sunset Blvd., in Beverly Hills: the park where, on April 7, 1998, British pop singer George Michael (formerly of Wham!) was arrested for performing a lewd act (while alone) in a public restroom. The star pleaded no contest, paid an $810 fine, and was ordered to undergo counseling. Michael later dressed as a cop and made light of the incident in his music video “Outside.” (Don’t confuse this Will Rogers Memorial Park with the much larger Will Rogers State Historic Park. This smaller park is located right across the street from the Beverly Hills Hotel.)

20300 block of Pacific Coast Highway, in Malibu: the area where, on at 2:30 a.m. on July 28, 2006, Mel Gibson (“The Road Warrior”, “Lethal Weapon”) was stopped by police in his Lexus LS430 while doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone. It’s not surprising that ‘Mad Max’ might be speeding - the real problem was that he was then arrested for driving under the influence - and apparently he didn’t behave nicely while drunk, berating the cop who arrested him and spewing out a lot of offensive rhetoric. He was taken to a Malibu police station, and was later released on $5,000 bail. (It was his first drunk driving offense in the U.S., so he didn’t face jail time - just a lot of negative publicity.) To his credit, Mel immediately owned up to it once he was sober, issuing a statement that read: “I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior, and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse.” Earlier, he had been drinking and posing for photos with fans on the patio bar of the beachside Moonshadow’s restaurant (20356 Pacific Coast Highway). By 2 a.m., the fans were concerned enough about his condition to offer him a ride home, but he shrugged it o

He brings it out to show the man. “That’s one is too skinny. What else you got?” says the man. The butcher takes the bird back into the freezer and waits a few minutes and brings the same turkey back out to the man. “Oh, no,” says the man, “That one doesn’t look any better. DON’T CRY OVER SPILT WINE!

California wine company salutes our fighting men & women

The General’s Blend

L

eucadia Red salutes the fighting men and women of our armed forces with the release of our California Red Wine, a 2009 Bordeaux style blend crafted with ingenuity and precision to deliver a bold, daring taste. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this wine will be donated to organizations that support the US troops. There are no unwounded soldiers in war. We solemnly raise our glass to the bravery, dedication and commitment of our enlisted personnel, as we honor the memory of those heroes who have sacrificed their lives with uncompromising valor.

Leucadia Red is a boutique wine company founded in the coastal city of Leucadia in north county San Diego featuring exclusive, superb Sonoma County wines. Leucadia Red embraces the surreal artwork of Jami Goddess and Leucadia Red founder Dave Archinal’s second generation wine industry experience in its wines. Leucadia Red wines are produced in collaboration with a group of expert vintners renown for their vast knowledge and winemaking artistry. Their goal is to produce high quality wines that always perform well above their price point, and combine them with exquisite art and a note of inspiration. In the culmination of art and wine, Leucadia Red wines begin with an original sketch by Jami, whose work has been described as “post-apocalyptic pin-ups.” Jami’s artwork is then paired with an exceptional Sonoma County wine providing a direct reflection of the art’s interpretation. You are invited to join the Leucadia Red experience: a union of art and wine…a journey in imagination...and inspiration in affirmation. For more information, please visit: www.leucadiared.com

The art work of Jami Goddess features sensual, sexy women that display an implicit, haunting emotion, overcoming adversity and pain but with a touch of macabre sarcasm. The female figures have been described as dark and surreal; one reviewer went as far as calling the women she creates postapocalyptic pinups. Jami shows her art all over the San Diego area and in New York City. Check out her website at www.goodgoddess.net. “I create art because it feels good, and it centers my restless, crazy mind. I feel like I am where I am supposed to be whenever I am drawing. There is a certain meditative quality in the redundant gestures and sounds of pencil scratching on paper. My artwork depicts the inverse relationship of my desires and dreams with my restless nature and wickedness.”

Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry

“I know what you’re thinking. “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself a question: Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? “ Harry Callahan: Clint Eastwood

Eastwood is the archetypal cop of the 1970s The film might easily have passed for a popular tale of cops and robbers or, more particularly, cop and psychopath had it not been for the ruthlessness of Harry’s methods... In this character, Eastwood is the archetypal cop of the 1970s... He is unsociable, insensitive, silent without apparent reason, incapable equally of thought or of any human feeling, solving all problems with a blast from a revolver so heavy that it takes two hands to aim it... In fact, the reason why Clint Eastwood behaves so ruthlessly in “Dirty Harry” is carefully plotted at one point in the film: his wife was killed by a hit-and-run driver escaping from the scene of a crime, so he hates all baddies… ‘Dirty Harry’ supplanted suspense by action, tension by brutality, character by a bigger and better bullet... Eastwood is a plain-clothes police-

man who puts his faith in his Colt Magnum.44 and his ability to use it... He is ready to shoot down a criminal as arrest him... Eastwood brought the rude justice of the lawless West to the regular laws of the modern city... Perhaps his behavior would have been less controversial if he had merely been a renegade cop who broke the rules when roused by anger, but in the cool neon light of his superior’s office, he is evidently unrepentant about his behavior... Eastwood had played ‘Dirty Harry’ five times in the sequels ‘Magnum Force’, ‘The Enforcer’, ‘Sudden Impact’ and ‘The Dead Pool.’ Callahan is always in a situation where he has to be his own judge and jury... Harry always gets somebody who’s very lethal... In the case of “Dirty Harry”, it was a psychopathic killer... Callahan wants to get him off the streets so that nobody else becomes a victim... He is a man on the side of the public... He feels that the law is wrong and he should fight that or try to solve it... Harry is not a man who stands for violence... He is a man who can’t understand society tolerating violence...

THE .44 MAGNUM The .44 Remington Magnum, or simply .44 Magnum, is a large-bore cartridge originally designed for revolvers. After introduction, it was quickly adopted for carbines and rifles. Despite the “.44” designation, all guns chambered for the .44 Magnum case, and its parent case, the .44 Special, use bullets of approximately 0.429 in (10.9 mm) diameter. For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

Eastwood is reassuringly indestructible and in real situations he adopts the fantasy mastery of a traditional Western loner... He may be beaten up, but never beaten by the criminals or by authority...

The Killer: Freeze cop. Now, left hand, pull out your gun. [Harry pulls out his .44 Magnum] The Killer: My, that’s a big one.

THE MMA REPORT In what many believe will be his last fight before jumping over to the UFC, Gilbert Melendez will put his STRIKEFORCE bantamweight championship on the line versus Jorge Masdival at Viejas Arena Dec. 17. Having amassed an impressive 18-2 record while battling his way to titles in both PRIDE and STRIKEFORCE, Melendez must get past Masdival if he hopes to get an immediate shot at UFC champion Frankie Edgar. At a recent press conference, Melendez sat down with MP reporter Art Garcia Jr and answered a few questions about his upcoming fight. AG: Tell me about Masvidal? GM: Well he’s tough; he’s a very tough cat. He’s a big guy – he’s fought in the 170’s … he’s fought tough guys like (Paul) Daley. He has a tall reach, has become a well-rounded mixed martial artist and he poses a lot of threats and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ve been doing my homework and I think I have what it takes to beat him. It’s fun because it’s a new style I haven’t quite fought yet although it is similar to a couple of guys I have, so I’m looking forward to testing his skills. AG: You train with both Nick and Nate Diaz, are they able to simulate that type of style so you can get some good work in before your face Masvidal on

Dec. 17? GM: You know a lot of times I just need them to be nice, tall, long and elusive and Nate’s really good for that – he likes to use his punches and he stays on the outside a lot. It’s hard to find a target on a tall guy and I have to learn to find it on Nate because he’s a really tall guy as well. So it helps me close the gap and find that target without swinging for the fences and missing like KJ Noons and Billy Evangelista did. AG:In a recent interview I read that Masdival said that you’re going to be eating his punches and how he prefers to stand up and fight because he would rather punish people than get a decision -- is that what you expect?

GM: That’s funny that he said that because all of his fights go the distance and I see him back peddling a lot. But he is a vicious fighter and he lands some vicious punches and if it goes to the ground then I’ll be doing the punishing … I think I’ll be doing most of the punishing in this fight. But I’m really excited for this fight, it’s pumping me up -- this whole day is pumping me up. AG: So you see some aspects of his game that you feel you can exploit? GM: I think so; I’m looking forward to it because I think I can do it everywhere. It frustrates me, well it doesn’t really frustrate me, because people say ‘make sure you take him down’ – yeah, it’s a great thing to take someone down but I’m not scared to stand with him at all. I don’t feel like his striking is devastating – yes, he throws some quick punches that come down the middle and he’s a very good boxer, but I know how to box boxers and I know how to box MMA fighters. AG: You say he has a different style and you have fought guys similar to his style… with that in mind, are you going to force him to adjust to you or are you going to adjust to his style? GM: He’s going to have to adjust to me. Obviously, I’m going to fight my fight because I know how to figure out his strategy, and once he figures out that his strategy isn’t working and now he’s fighting my game it’s going to be different for him. AG: There are some members of the media who believe that once you jump to the UFC you should have to pay your dues in that organization rather than

getting an automatic title shot just because you’re the STRIKEFORCE champion – what are your thoughts? GM: With some of those writers I have been fighting longer than they’ve been writers, you know what I mean -- probably twice as long. There are a lot of writers that have been out there like that who just don’t know anything. The reason I haven’t beaten any of the guys in the UFC is because they haven’t been around as long as me having been in the PRIDE days. If you look at your history, I’ve been around a lot longer -- you get ranked easier in the UFC just because you’re in the UFC. Someone like Jorge, to me he should be ranked in the top ten --he could beat a lot of those guys in the UFC that are ranked up thereand demolish a lot of them but he hasn’t had the exposure as (he would) in the UFC.I’m sure if they played all of my fights on the UFC from day one people would think different. If every one of my fights were UFC fights they’d be thinking I’m just as good as I say I am. AG: Can you give me a prediction for the fight? GM: Prediction? Yeah, I predict this fight won’t go beyond the third round. AG: Any message to the MMA fans in San Diego? GM: I want to wish the fans in San Diego much love. I have family in Tijuana, from Chula Vista up to northern California, you should come and check out these fights – I can’t guarantee you a victory but I can sure guarantee some fireworks baby!

Entertainment Eastwood stays fresh with latest pic By Peter Bart, Liz Smith

W

hen Hollywood is flailing about with tired re-makes, Clint Eastwood, one of its more senior filmmakers, seems more determined than ever to stake new ground. His gripping new film “J. Edgar” is the polar opposite of contemporary studio product -- a searing biopic about a megalomaniacal right-wing ideologue. Ask Clint about his game plan, and he will, of course, deny the existence of any. I had a leisurely talk with him recently in Carmel, Calif. (he was once the mayor), where he showed his new film before friends and neighbors at the Carmel Film Festival. “My life is a series of accidents,” Eastwood insists. When Brian Grazer first mentioned Hoover to him, he wondered why the producer was interested in vacuum cleaners. A glimpse of the material, combined with a call from DiCaprio, piqued his interest. Dustin Lance Black was brought aboard to write the screenplay (he’d won an Oscar for “Milk”) and stayed with the film through production. The profile of J. Edgar is a measured one. A driven man who fought fiercely to introduce

Under his four-decade reign, J. Edgar Hoover used the FBI to blackmail presidents and manipulate the media to mold his image as the nation’s lone protector against gangsters and “Bolsheviks.” Top politicians and reporters were scared to reveal that J. Edgar (superbly played by Leonardo DiCaprio) was a mama’s boy with a gay lover. science into the messy arena of crime-busting, he also was both ruthless and emotionally unstable. By contrast, Clint, age 81, seems as rock-solid and relaxed as ever. He is a man famously devoid of intellectual pretension. He steadfastly declines to intellectualize about his work. Indeed, his films seem to unfold as adventures in self-discovery. A libertarian by instinct, he is also a humanitarian by nature -- a profoundly decent and accessible man who covets the “accidents” that define the continued growth of his career. In a 2010 profile of Eastwood in the New Yorker, David Denby observed that “those who were skeptical of Eastwood 40 years ago (I’m one of them) have long since capitulated, retired or died. He has outlasted everyone.” Talking to Eastwood last weekend, I didn’t sense that he would relate to Denby’s remark. Rather, he seemed to regard himself as a filmmaker in mid-career who was already planning his next film. And it would not be a remake. There was too much more to learn and explore.

Frazier defined what it means to be a fighter By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports

F

razier rose from the most humble beginnings in Buford, S.C., to become a gold medalist and the world heavyweight champion, doing it through sheer will and perseverance. He fought in a classic bobbingand-weaving style, working his way to the inside by attacking the body and then unleashing his money punch, the left hook. He paid a heavy price to get inside, particularly in his bouts against Ali, but Frazier was fearless. “I really and truly loved the guy,” promoter Bob Arum, who handled Ali, said. “He was a real man. He was a proud, great warrior who was every-

fighter again. He went 5-4-1 in his next 10 fights, losing twice to Ali and twice to George Foreman. He harbored a grudge against Ali that he never truly got over. Ali mercilessly taunted Frazier as he was promoting their fights, referring to him as a “gorilla” and an “Uncle Tom.” That incensed Frazier, who could never come to terms with the fact that Ali was simply trying to draw attention to his fights. Larry Merchant, the one-time sports editor of the Philadelphia Daily News and now an HBO Sports boxing analyst, said Frazier was too proud to forgive Ali’s taunts. “Ali, in his way of trying to market fights, had been cruel at times,” Merchant said. “We all knew that Ali was just doing a sales job, trying to promote the fights, but if you’re the target and the bullets are hitting you and you have to take them, then I guess it could be pretty hard to take. And Joe really resented him for years and years for the things Ali had said.” Frazier took delight in Ali’s struggles with Parkinson’s syndrome that rendered the most talkative athlete ever mute. “I did that to him,” Frazier would say to anyone who would listen. He felt betrayed because he tried

It was one of my life’s great experiences knowing him. “If I were in a war zone fighting against any enemy, the guy I would choose to have next to me was Joe Frazier. There was no quit in him and he was really a man.” Frazier spent nine days in the hospital after becoming the first man to defeat Ali, and he was never the same

to help Ali when Ali was stripped of the heavyweight title for refusing induction into military service. Ali was exiled for three years at the peak of his powers, from 1967 to 1970, and Frazier went to bat for him in order to help him get his license back. He went so far as to plead Ali’s case with President Nixon. And because he felt he had done

so much, he resented Ali’s taunts during the promotion of their three great fights. They were both guaranteed $2.5 million to fight each other as unbeaten heavyweight champions in 1971 and Ali immediately waged a war of words against Frazier, who privately seethed. “Believe me when I tell you this, Ali respected Joe an awful lot,” said Gene Kilroy, Ali’s long-time friend and former business manager. “When they signed for that fight, they made so much money and everything was guaranteed. They didn’t have to do a thing to promote it, because it wouldn’t make a difference. But Ali

never met a camera he didn’t love and he began talking about Joe to anyone who would listen. “I told Joe years later that Ali was just trying to sell the fight, but Joe said to me, ‘How do you think I feel when he calls me an Uncle Tom? My kids come home from school and tell me the other kids told them their Dad’s a gorilla.’ Joe just couldn’t get over it.” Frazier nearly quit boxing in 1964 when he lost to Buster Mathis in the Olympic Trials and didn’t make the U.S. team. But when Mathis broke a hand, Frazier went to Tokyo in his place and won a gold medal. And that was the closest to quitting Frazier ever came at anything. He was legendary for his competitive streak and for the way he pushed himself in training. “There was nothing not to love about Joe Frazier and how hard he trained, how hard he fought and much he wanted to win,” Merchant said. “That 1971 fight is still the biggest and greatest event I ever covered and it exceeded all the extraordinary expectations that were placed upon it.” That’s what Joe Frazier was. He was a guy who exceeded expectations. He wasn’t the fastest or the strongest or the most athletic, but there were few who were as fearless and few who gave as much of himself in pursuit of a victory. Ali will always be “The Greatest,” but his biggest rival was plenty great, too.

The best worst game in world series history By LOUIE CENTANNI The St. Louis Cardinals overcame heavy odds in winning the 2011 World Series. While Game 7 was the clincher, the previous contest will be remembered as the turning point. Game 6 between the Cardinals and the Texas Rangers has been called many things. The New York Times called it “epic.” Time Magazine and CNN.com both called it an “instant classic.” Few, though, have used another classification that is just as apt: the worst baseball game in recent postseason memory. Don’t get me wrong: the game was an absolute joy to watch. It provided suspense, drama, and (sweet Jesus!) the excitement! Over the past three or so years of baseball, I find it hard to recall a game I would have rather watched. However, the fact remains, if this game was played at the high school junior varsity level, both teams would’ve been running like there was no tomorrow afterwards.

Where do I begin? A combined 5 errors, 4 unearned runs, 2 wild pitches, 3 blown saves, 12e base on balls... The Cards allowed leadoff baserunners in five of the first seven innings: 2 walks, 2 errors, and a solo home run. The Rangers’ pitching staff walked more batters than they struck out. There were four attempted sacrifice bunts in the game — the lone success was literally bunted over the head of a charging third baseman. The list goes on. And these were the best two teams in the major leagues this year? It wasn’t only the physical shortcomings. Strategically and mentally, this game was an absolute disaster. Why, when the Cardinals had the bases loaded during the bottom of the 8th inning, did three consecutive hitters swing at the first pitch they saw? Yes, Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay singled; however, Descalso’s first-pitch swing was a routine groundball that was mentally misplayed by Elvis Andrus, who could have either thrown Yadier Molina out by 15 feet for the force play or quick-released a throw across the diamond to end the inning. (But Ian Kinsler wasn’t at the base! They’re major leaguers. Toss it over the bag, he was there in time.) Then, with the bases juiced, Rafael Furcal (3-for-24 in the series at that point) hacked at a first pitch slider out of the zone, anticlimactically tapping out to Mike Adams to kill the rally. Smart hitting while in a slump, with your team trailing, and the pitcher backed into a corner. On the flipside, how could Jason Motte throw a first-pitch fastball down Broadway to Josh Hamilton — a man who swings at roughly 50% of first pitches — in the 11th inning? Did Motte and Molina fall asleep reading

the scouting report? It was absurd to give him a hittable pitch in that situation. On the managing side, riddle me this, La Russa: how can you leave Molina on base in the bottom of the eighth when your team is four outs away from elimination? Had Edwin Jackson or Kyle Lohse been on second when Jay stroked the single to center, the game would have been tied without Furcal’s foolish flail. Imagine if the Cards had not fought back in the 9th — it would have cost them the game. The retirement conference for La Russa would have had a few more questions to be answered. And then came the play that will go down in history: a historic, basesclearing, 2-out, 2-strike triple by David Freese to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. How can anyone find fault with this play? Let me count the ways: 1) Tony La Russa — Why is Lance Berkman still on first base as the potential tying run? If this ball goes to the gap, he will either be held at third or hosed at the plate. Unless the ball is misplayed... 2) Nelson Cruz — I do not fall into the camp that believes Cruz could have caught this flyball. Replays are inconclusive. What is conclusive to an intelligent baseball player, though, is that Lance Berkman on was on first base. Cruz has a shotgun for an arm — play the ball off the carom, hit your cutoff man, and watch Berkman slam on the brakes or barrel your catcher to end the series.

For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

3) Neftali Feliz — At what point in the at-bat did a grooved, 2-strike fastball seem like the best idea to close out David Freese? The easiest 98 mph pitch to hit (if there is one) is one down in the zone and out over the plate. Had Feliz gone inside or up, this series is over and... 4) David Freese — ...would have been the goat he had prepared himself to be. Only in baseball can the man who nearly cost his team the game return (in an entirely self-created moment) to be the hero. Had he caught the pop-up in the top of the fifth, Cards win this game in nine. As it stands, he’s a World Series hero instead. Now, as an analytical and observant student of baseball, I completely understand that all of my hypothetical “what ifs” would have altered the course of this game profoundly. Perhaps a pinch-runner gets thrown out

at the plate to end the eighth. Maybe Freese’s error forces the pitcher to focus instead of easing up and dishing out back-to-back homers. Suppose Pujols trotted out to first base twelve seconds later due to Furcal waiting for the second pitch, breaks his ankle tripping over another squirrel, and the morale in St. Louis drops irretrievably low. I get it. But ultimately, so much about this game made baseball purists cringe. There’s a reason Japan wins the World Baseball Classic each time it’s played: fundamentals. They robotically manufacture runs, avoid sloppy defense, and throw strikes. Either team could have taken this Series had they followed that basic formula. But then again, where would the excitement have come from?

TO INK OR NOT TO INK

Would you hire me?

Visible Tattoos and Other Corporate No-Nos By Larissa Faw, Forbes.com

C

orporate dress code policies have swung to the extreme in recent years. Companies either maintain no guidelines at all or establish such rigid policies that they almost appear to be elaborate pranks. American Apparel’s infamous corporate policy, for instance, forbids shiny lip-gloss, bangs, and notes that “blow-drying hair excessively could cause heat damage.” Similarly, financial bank UBS dictates women “may wear no more than seven jewels” and “scarves are compulsory, and must be tied with ‘authorized knots.’” And then there’s the issue of tattoos and piercings. For the past few decades, it’s likely that coffeehouse baristas and graphic designers would be adorned with tattoos or piercings, but now, it’s just as likely that the kindergarten teacher, bank manager, or real estate agent is sporting ink or a nose ring. Nearly half of 26-40-year-olds (40%) and 36% of 18-25-year-olds have tattoos, and 22% of 26-40-year-olds and 30% of 18-25-year-olds have at least one body piercing, according to the Pew Research Center. There are differences in opinions of men versus women having tattoos. Men are allowed to be a little rebellious and punk rock (both men and women have some admiration for a “bad boy”), where as, women, not so much. While societal norms are shifting, it’s happening slowly. Women can be wild in private but should still be ladylike in public, and visible tattoos make that impossible in some people’s eyes. Despite the widespread prevalence of workers with these adornments, there’s no consensus among employers on how to address them. “I think it depends on the location of the tattoo and how easily it can be covered up. Girls with neck tattoos can just wear their hair down,” says Ellan Tong of

You know how to earn your stripes. But don’t forget: the more you learn, the more you earn.

media agency 26 Dot Two. Most corporations and small businesses have no formal policies towards tattoos or piercings. Among those with guidelines: Geico Insurance, U.S. Postal Service, Starwood Hotels and Denny’s won’t hire those with visible tattoos. Allstate Insurance, Bank of America, and the ad agency Wieden-Kennedy have no reservations about hiring those with tattoos or piercings. Yet most HR managers also concede that all things being equal, they will hire the more clean-cut employee. In fact, piercings (37%) are the top physical attribute that may limit an employee’s career potential, according to CareerBuilder.com, followed by bad breath (34%) and visible tattoos (31%). For those — especially women — entering the workforce, any thought that their careers may be hindered by a butterfly tattoo seems laughable. Today’s young professionals view these enhancements as an accessory or extension of their personalities. “How many really great potential employees are these companies losing out on simply because they don’t project the image that these companies want?” asks BlogHer’s Elisa Camahort Page. At the same time, young employees also realize that in today’s precarious job market, they don’t want to give an employer any reason to reject them, As one HR director says, “You won’t get fired for having a visible tattoo, but it likely means you won’t get hired.”

Love 101

“You are my hiding place; you shall preserve me from trouble; you shall surround me with songs of deliverance. “ -Psalms 32:7. As individuals, it is a privilege to be able to develop our own perceptions on life and all that it has to offer. As men and women in the military you have an amazing opportunity to develop not only a successful life as a single person but also as a couple if you so choose. However it is important to be wise and do what is best for one another in a military marriage. The time is precious when military couples are home together, and it is important for each to stay balanced when they are apart. Right now the divorce rate in the military is at its all time high. Young

couples need to know the importance of the relationship, not just the potential business agreement. More often than not, the romantic commitment that is shared has not been allowed to properly develop. It actually takes time and practice to learn how to carry out the obligations of love. To hold and sustain peace in the household is very important to a family’s

well-being. As lovers committing to a bond, it is important to rejoice and respect one another at all costs. Without this understanding, a couple can become greatly troubled. Work, family and friends start to become more of a chore rather than a “gift.” As I search my sources to find the words to help young couples on the subject of “Military Romance,” discouragement from such is not my goal here. I seek to encourage young military members to allow the blessings of these encounters to develop in due time rather than plunging into a world unknown with great potential for heartache. To the strong and courageous men and women who stand by their significant others fighting for this country, I say to you, open your hearts and engage your minds enough to allow your love to develop before making any regretful decisions concerning a military marriage.

A quick marriage can create a heavy burden on the relationship. Two people are already under so much stress from life. Love can be threatened by breakdown if not fully understood or developed. Aside from the demoralizing effects a couple can experience, the government’s purpose behind military marriage is to respect and support the honor of your vows. Not the “arrangement” you both have agreed upon to ensure economical status and financial comfort. Such assistance provided by this country is a precious gift not to be taken for granted. The government always encourages single men and women to keep the faith and have patience when embarking on love. It is a courtship so valuable where memories and moments can be easily taken for granted. The military offers guidance that civilians do not have and it is this guidance that should be taken advantage of… nothing else.

“Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”

his issue we take a moment and remember those who serve or have served our country in our military services. We hopefully remember the great dedication, time

and sacrifice they freely have given their fellow man so we can enjoy the freedoms and liberties we do today. It is taught in the scriptures that: “Greater love hath no man than this,

that a man lay down his life for his friend.” Does that sound familiar? Well, I know that I was taught this belief throughout the time I was a young enlisted Infantry Marine. One of my sons also has actually lived it serving two combat tours in Iraq as a Marine and seeing several of his friends pay that ultimate price. History suggests that actually few people ever are called to give this ultimate love and sacrifice. We have seen the courageous in the military give their all in the battlefield because of

this love of country, devotion to duty, and commitment to their fellow serviceman. But, we also see devoted mothers sacrificing their lives to protect a child. As well as, political, organizational, and religious leaders who have been martyred for their cause or beliefs. Yet, what about you and me in our daily walk and routines? Let me share a poem with you that may help you ponder this question. It is “My Today”, written by Mabel F. Ricard: I have no other day than this; Oh, Father, grant I shall not miss The service sweet of doing good, And living truly as I should. Oh, Father, in this day that’s mine, Let all thy sweetness through me shine; Let all my ways acknowledge thee, May my Lord be manifest in me. Oh! Let me by thy voice to speak The truth to those who vainly seek; And though me let thy love o’erflow To all the world that needs it so. Oh! Let today be this for me, A day of glorifying thee. ‘Tis all the day that my soul knows; ‘Tis from today tomorrow grows.

So, for today, this is my prayer— Tomorrow, Lord, is in my care. Most likely, our sacrifices are many smaller ones that will become expressions of that greater love. Most of us lay our lives down every time we think of another and put their interests and needs ahead of ours. Even though we may not be killed as a martyr, or in combat, or give our life for a loved one’s safety, we are given many opportunities each day to lay down our lives for another. Not in death, but in service and sacrifice, be it one day, one hour, or one moment at a time, you are giving the mark of a true friend. No greater love can be given than to lose ourselves in service to others. It has been said that; “When we are in the service of our fellow beings, we are only in the service of our God.” With so many of our friends and family going through this time of uncertainty, may we look evermore for those opportunities to give of ourselves to lift another. A quote by an unknown author expresses it this way, “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” It is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings,” and renew a little of your strength, to keep moving forward, and find joy… “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint.”… (Isaiah 40:31) next on time, God bless you UseUntil this size Fullmay Page Ads and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI

Commentary

God, Jesus, Christmas Trees . . . BAH HUMBUG!

A

pparently the White House referred to Christmas Trees as Holiday Trees for the first time this year which prompted CBS presenter, Ben Stein, to present this piece which I would like to share with you. I think it applies just as much to Canada and many other countries as it does to America . The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary. My confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are, Christmas trees. It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, ‘Merry Christmas’ to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a crèche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away. I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat. Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God ? I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to. In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking. Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her ‘How could God let something like this happen?’ (regarding Hurricane Katrina).. Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, ‘I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?’ In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they

misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said okay. Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with ‘WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.’ Funny how simple it is for people

For advertising information, call (858) 537-2280

to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace. Are you laughing yet? Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully, Ben Stein

e a ROCKSTAR auto year 2011 Mazda MX-5 Super20

Here’s a vehicle that may be sporting an orange and black combination, but has nothing to do with the spooky and wicked Halloween season. This is the Mazda MX-5 Super20, a vehicle whose name may sound a bit familiar due to Mazda’s entry into SEMA last year. The 2010 Super20 was created to celebrate the MX-5’s 20th anniversary, but this year, Mazda decided to bring a 2.0 version of that same vehicle with a killer paint job and a load of accessories. The 2011 Mazda MX-5 Super20 features a Hyper Orange Mica exterior paint finish with black stripes to soften the bright blow. The paint job is topped off with a stationary, glossy

black hardtop to replace the vehicle’s standard soft-top. The interior has also been modified and now features a color-matched roll bar and black leather seats with suede seat inserts and channel and orange contrast stitching. The Super20 was also privy to a few performance modifications, such as a DPTune reflashed ECU, a Racing Beat 304-stainless steel header and exhaust, and Racing Beat hollow front and rear anti-roll bars. These features were joined by an ACT organic street clutch, MazdaSpeed coil overs and a shock tower brace, Power Slot slotted brake rotors, StopTech stainless steel brake lines and street performance brake pads, and SpeedSource front brake ducts. The MX-5 Super20 was finished with black 16-inch Enkei RPF1 twin-spoke racing wheels, Toyo Proxes RA-1 245/45ZR16 high-performance tires, and 20mm H&R Track+ bolt-on wheel spacers in the rear and 15mm Sparco wheel spacers in the front. From the looks of things, we think Mazda threw together the Super20 last year and decided to really work hard this year to present a Super20 worthy of being called a celebratory vehicle.

2012 Chevrolet COPO Camaro Concept

Whatever you think of the Chevrolet Camaro, you know that at the deep recesses of its heart, it’s a muscle car that’s only waiting to be unleashed on a drag strip. After all, the COPO Camaro was one of the best stock cars back in the 60’s, a time when the Central Office Production Order (COPO) - Chevrolet’s vehicle special-order program - became famous for all the performance-minded Camaros that were made, mostly with intentions of turning them into Stock Eliminator racers. Half a century later, the COPO Camaro is making a comeback as a concept vehicle designed to the specifications for NHRA Stock Eliminator drag racing competition. One of the unique things about this particular Camaro is that it was designed to accommodate a few engine options, including that

of the 7.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine that was found in the original COPO Camaros from yesteryear. In terms of design, the COPO Camaro Concept pretty much adhered to its set-up as a full-spec drag car. Gone are all the bells and whistles that usually come in a standard Camaro. In their place, Chevrolet added a full array of race equipment, including a full, chrome molly roll cage, a high-rise cowl-induction system, a set of 29” lightweight, COPO-specific racing wheels wrapped in 4.5x28x15 “inch front tires. Inside, the car receives a pair of racing bucket seats with no rear seat, a safety harness for the driver, a competition floor shifter, and Chevrolet Performance gauges by Auto Meter. The muscle car’s overall handling and set-up were tweaked to give it even more capabilities on the track. A coil-over suspension with Strange Engineering adjustable struts can be found in the front while a custom suspension with Strange Engineering shocks, a Panhard bar. and a stabilizer bar complete the exterior set-up of the muscle car.

Pilgrims before the Mayflower

In 1608, a congregation of disgruntled English Protestants from the village of Scrooby, Nottinghamshire, left England and moved to Leyden, a town in Holland. These “Separatists” did not want to pledge allegiance to the Church of England, which they believed was nearly as corrupt and idolatrous as the Catholic Church it had replaced, any longer. (They were not the same as the Puritans, who had many of the same objections to the English church but wanted to reform it from within.) The Separatists hoped that in Holland, they would be free to worship as they liked In fact, the Separatists (they called themselves “Saints”) did find religious freedom in Holland, but they also found a secular life that was more difficult to navigate than they’d anticipated. For one thing, Dutch craft guilds excluded the migrants, so they were relegated to menial, low-paying jobs. Even worse was Holland’s easygoing, cosmopolitan atmosphere, which proved alarmingly seductive to some of the Saints’ children. (These young people were “drawn away,” Separatist leader William Bradford wrote, “by evill [sic] example into extravagance and dangerous courses.”) For the strict, devout Separatists, this was the last straw. They decided to move again, this time to a place without government interference or worldly distraction: the “New World” across the Atlantic Ocean.
