Interweaving Poetic Code
Taeyoon Choi is a renowned educator, writer, artist, activist and the co-founder of the School for Poetic Computation founded in New York in 2013. Through his multifaceted practices of computation, he critically examines the codes of conduct of operation and the coded system embedded in the technology surrounding us whilst exploring alternative ways of shaping an inclusive society with the idea of care. Taking into account the irrefutable linkage between textile technology and computation, in particular, coding, CHAT invites Choi as an artistic director for the exhibition entitled Interweaving Poetic Code. The exhibition will explore how we can use computation and textile(s) for the care of others in a more poetic way. In Interweaving Poetic Code, a series of Choi’s multiple practices, ranging from texts to textual drawings, paintings, documentation of his past performance pieces and his first knit piece, is exhibited along with diverse works by his associates, including artists such as Aarati Akkapeddi, Andreas Angelidakis, Laura Devendorf, Christine Sun Kim, KOBAKANT, Amor Munoz and Rebirth Garments for explorative journey of coding in textile(s). An international Discussion Forum, performances and workshops are also planned in conjunction with Interweaving Poetic Code to activate the synergy of computation and textile(s) and its possibility for care. We hope this exhibition and related events will enrich your positive imagination of computation and textile(s). Curator: Takahashi Mizuki

Special Programmes 「
Unlearning Space (Gallery 2)
We define unlearning as a way of questioning how we learn and what we learn, so as to recognise internal growth and create a community of self-taught learners. In this space for walk-in workshops and programmes, we invite you to make something on your own with various craft, textile and technology. The concept is inspired by mushrooms that have decentralised, reciprocal and interdependent relationships, echoing the text on the mural by Taeyoon Choi: ‘Radical restructuring of our habitat. Coexistence of critters, living and nonliving. Incremental changes are also necessary. Taking care of our environments, things and energy.’

As a continuation of the creative exchanges CHAT has with artists, CHAT Shop invites them to develop unique merchandise together as part of the CHAT Originals series. For the Spring exhibition, Taeyoon Choi conducted a series of online workshops for students at the Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired to approach HTML, ASCII and JavaScript coding with poetic creativity. The students’ creations were then engineered into knitted laptop sleeves by Chemtax (Stoll) Co. Ltd, with partial proceeds donated back to the school. Choi also designed two CHAT Originals T-shirts: Zeros and Ones and Mr. Transistor and Friends, which feature the basis of coding and computing’s physical electronic components, highlighting the playful side of computing. These CHAT Originals are available for purchase at CHAT Shop.
