A special thank you to Dr. Karl Watson who so kindly shared his antique postcard collection which inspired the new theme for this edition. Our sincere thanks also to Dulcie Fisher who graciously allowed us to feature her exquisite stamp collection.

With Barbados’ postal service being one of the oldest in the world, her collection includes several of the island’s first stamp issue of 1852 and a wide range of beautiful stamps from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Postcards from Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison How Bridgetown was transformed from an unoccupied mangrove, that the first 65 English settlers would have found in 1628, to being hailed as the New York of the West Indies two hundred and fifty years later is an interesting story. It all started in an era when fortunes were being made in trade across the seas. Whoever ruled the waves ruled the world. As Britain forged ahead to create a British Atlantic State in the colonies of the Americas, Bridgetown was ideally located as the most eastern port in the region. Carlisle Bay served as an excellent anchorage protected from both the weather and enemy attack. At the same time, vast wealth was also being created by the production of sugar and this was another huge contributor to the booming economy of Bridgetown.

Using slave labour, Barbadian settlers produced sugar, introduced to the island by the Dutch Jews from Recife in Brazil, and sold it to the world market at huge profits, making them some of the wealthiest and most influential men in the English court. Thirdly, the British established one of their largest military garrisons in Bridgetown to protect their interests in the region.

This is the centre of trade for all the islands – and port of The Royal Mail Line between England and the islands and the main land of South America, as well as that of the Hamburg-American steamers, of other European Lines, The Quebec Steamship company and the boats plying between South America and New York. It is in fact, the New York of the Indies.”

World Heritage Site

Bridgetown flourished and indeed through trade, commerce, education, science, communications and culture it participated significantly in the global exchange of ideas that shaped the development of the Atlantic World.

Although much of the physcial evidence of Bridgetown’s heritage is to be restored over time, there are many wonderful sites to visit.

The Nidhe Israel synagogue is the oldest in the western hemisphere and there is a fascinating museum, a beautiful restored mikvah and a graveyard with some of the oldest graves on the island. The beautiful public buildings that house the third oldest parliament in the world after Britain and Bermuda also has a state of the art museum. A boardwalk has been constructed along the Careenage, after the fact that the schooners used to be leant on their sides or careened there for cleaning. At either end of the boardwalk there are places to have refreshments.

World Heritage Site

Cricket, polo and horse racing were introduced at the Garrison by the British Army and these sports are passionately enjoyed by Barbadians today.

But the most well preserved physical evidence in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Barbados is the Garrison. Bridgetown’s Garrison is one of the oldest colonial British military garrisons in the Atlantic world. Remarkably, the 150 acre site contains more than 80 individual historic sites. These include forts, grand barrack buildings, cookhouses, latrines, hospitals, prisons, parade grounds and the recently discovered network of underground tunnels.

It is home to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and the George Washington Attraction where America’s founding father spent 50 days at the impressionable age of 19 in 1751. These are two of the best places to visit at the Garrison. Another is the ‘Changing of the Sentry’ which can be seen every Wednesday just before noon at the Main Guard, with its elegant clock tower.

There is also the largest collection of 17th century English canon in the world on display, many in superb condition despite being nearly 400 years old.

“At no other port in the Caribbean islands did we behold so great a fleet of merchant men and coasting vessels. There were several trading steamers lying at anchor near a trim steel clad cruiser flying the standard of St. George, the broad expanse of roadstead being crowded with craft of all sizes, of every variety of rig and model. In addition to the craft above described they were collected from “a’ the airts the wind can blaw” under heaven, Danish, Norwegian and English barks and brigs; Dutch, Italian, Austrian and Spanish square riggers.”

These fascinating tours, which start at the Jolly Roger Tavern in Carlisle House, Bridetown include the James Fort building (Barbados’ first prison), St. Mary’s Church, the Nidhe Synagogue, Queen’s Park (oldest tree in Barbados circa 1738, with a trunk with a circumference of 80 ft.), the Anglican Cathedral (first built in 1665), Parliament buildings, the cenotaph, the Dolphin Fountain, Heroes Square, Nelson’s statue, the Chamberlain Bridge and the old screw dock. On returning to the Jolly Roger Tavern, lunch is served and refreshments await.

The tour takes place most mornings and the price includes the transport to and from your hotel, lunch and drinks. There is also time to shop whilst in town.

There is such a variety of diving experiences on offer in Barbados that any keen scuba diver or underwater photographer should leave the island knowing that their dives have not only been worthwhile, but also challenging, fascinating, rewarding and, most importantly, enjoyable.

Not only are there flourishing, brightly coloured reefs covered in a variety of hard and soft corals, but there is a superb selection of wrecks – old and new, large and small. Barbados is also home to many large pelagic fish such as barracuda, and various species of jacks, tarpon and mackerel.

Sting rays, eagle rays and many eels are common residents, ready to dazzle even the most worldly divers, plus the occasional sightings of manta rays.

Barbados undoubtedly has the best collection of wrecks in the Caribbean. Standing above all others, quite literally, is the SS Stavronikita, a 365 foot long freighter which was purposely sunk in 1978. She was so skillfully sunk that she lies upright, intact on a sandy bed with her keel resting at 130 feet. This impressive wreck needs 5 or 6 dives to see all of it and is the most often re-dived site in Barbados.

The picturesque Carlisle Bay lies just south of Bridgetown and is the resting place of six wrecks of varying age and size. The whole area has been made into a marine park and is one of the few places where divers and snorkelers can access the wrecks from the beach.

With so much interest and variety packed into a small, neatly packaged space, Barbados provides some wonderful sightseeing opportunities and a chance to interact with our people–considered to be amongst the friendliest in the world! The island offers a compelling range of scenic surprises, a fascinating history and a rich architectural heritage.

A mere 21 miles long by 14 miles at its widest point, you are never more than 20 minutes from the coast, and in many cases, there is usually somewhere else to visit quite close by.

Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and attractions that are of particular interest to you. You will find a selection of reputable car hire companies listed in our Getting Around section (pages 112-121).

You will also find the fold-out Road Map which is provided with this publication very useful for selecting and finding the major attractions.

Touring the West & North Holetown, in the parish of St. James, is the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays it is a busy area of posh hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Shopping in this area has recently been taken up several notches with the opening of the magnificent new Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant community for shopping, entertainment and enjoyment, with many of the world’s leading retail brands opening flagship stores there alongside trendy cafés, gourmet food stores and state of the art movie theatres.

Just north of Holetown is St. James Parish Church which stands on one of the oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referred to as "God's acre". Many of the original settlers and a number of prominent Barbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard.

Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just off Highway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells from around the world and many other shell related gift items for the shell enthusiast. Nearby Gibbes beach and Mullins are

perfect for a swim and a bite to eat at Mullins Beach Bar. A few miles further north is Speightstown, once a fort and thriving port, today it is a fishing port and commercial centre though much of the 19th century architecture and charm still remains. It was often referred to as “Little Bristol” because of the trading connections with Bristol in England. For an interesting glimpse into the history of Speightstown, visit Arlington House Museum. Look out for the enormous Speightstown mural, “Bridge of Tides”, which adorns the north wall of Jordan’s Supermarket warehouse. At 80ft long and 20ft tall, it is the largest, monumental “trompe l’oeil” mural in the region and was created by Californian artists, John and Annie Pugh and Barbadian artist, Don Small.

The quaint little fishing village of Six Men’s has produced some of the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area. Today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches ashore here and sell them at the roadside. The delightful Fish Pot Restaurant at Little Good Harbour is a wonderful stop for

Animal Flower Cave A wonder of Barbados not to be missed. Located at the most northerly tip of the island where the coastal scenery is spectacular. The cave got its name from the sea anemones found in its many rock pools.

Steps lead down into the cave through an opening in the cliff.

Weather permitting, you can have a delicious swim in the natural rock pool in the cave.

The view from the naturally formed “windows” out to the sea and the pounding surf are simply awesome, so don’t forget your camera.

The Pirates Tavern located on the cliff top, serves delicious, fresh Bajan salt bread cutters, wraps and cold drinks. Open daily 9am–5pm.

The Animal Flower Cave, located on the rugged cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island, is a large sea cave with several huge chambers filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. An informal café serves cold drinks and sandwiches and there are guides who will walk you through the cave. There are also some wonderful photo opportunities to be had along the rugged north eastern coastline, particularly at Little Bay and Cove Bay. The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, otters, mongoose and many other animals. There is also a walk-in bird aviary and iguana sanctuary. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artefacts, including pre-Colombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life – intriguing, informative and educational.

The central portion of Barbados is exceptionally verdant with rolling hills and mile upon mile of sugar cane fields. St. George and St. Thomas are the only two parishes not bordered by the sea. An essential stop in the lofty hills of St. Thomas is Earthworks Pottery, a working pottery carrying irresistible, functional works of art. Visitors can also view the restored 1890 steam mill grinding sugar cane in the old syrup factory and sample their special aged rum in the plantation bond where it is handbottled and sold.

The north-eastern parish of St. Andrew is known for its dramatic landscapes and unusual rock formations. The early Scottish settlers thought that the area was much like their native Scotland and named the region the Scotland District.

Welchman Hall Gully Enchanted Tropical Forest Take a stroll through one of Barbados’ true tropical treasures. Located in the heart of the island, only 2 minutes from Harrison’s Cave, Welchman Hall Gully is a uniquely special place and definitely well worth a visit.

Formed centuries ago when the roofs of caves collapsed, it is now filled with an abundance of flourishing, exotic tropical plants and trees.

In the peaceful hush of the gully, visitors can often see troops of Green Monkeys frolicking in the trees – a good time to see them is around 10am and 1:30pm when they are usually fed.

In close proximity you’ll discover some of the island’s most treasured sites, all within a relatively small radius: Welchman Hall Gully; the breathtaking Harrison’s Cave, and the exquisitely land-scaped Flower Forest.

Follow the signs to Hunte’s Gardens in the lush hills of St. Joseph – a real treat for all garden enthusiasts. Legendary horticulturalist, Anthony Hunte has lovingly landscaped an arena-sized natural sink hole into what can only be described as a stunning tropical garden!

Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash and its wild, Atlantic seascape, with the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland.

The quaint, seaside village of Bathsheba is just over the hill. In the middle of the bay is Soup Bowl – a favourite surf spot with top surfers from around the world! The view and the lunch at Round House are equally enjoyable!

Another first-class stop for lunch on the east coast is the historic Atlantis Hotel in Tent Bay. Having undergone an extensive and thoughtful renovation in recent times, Atlantis still retains its unique charm and famous buffet lunches!

Positioned in the hills just above Atlantis, you’ll find Andromeda Gardens, encompassing some six and a half acres, it’s considered one of the finest botanical gardens in the Caribbean.

Like the Greek maiden for whom the gardens are named, Andromeda Botanic Gardens clings to the rocky hillside above Barbados’ spectacular Atlantic coastline. Founded over fifty years ago by world renowned horticulturalist Iris Bannochie, Andromeda’s lush gardens span 6½ acres and host a horticultural collection containing about 650 species from the Caribbean, Tropical Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands. Stroll through this quiet garden of Eden, winding your way past flowering trees, palms, orchids, and breathe in the peaceful sea air for a soulsatisfying rejuvenation. Explore meandering, cobbled paths winding around 20 foot heliconias and over lily ponds playing host to the garden’s other inhabitants – lizards, birds, dragonflies, fish catching the light and even the occasional green monkey. Andromeda has a well-stocked gift shop and a lovely café, making it a great stop on your island tour.

Cricket fans will be bowled over at the Cricket Museum, located near the famous Kensington Oval on the outskirts of Bridgetown. It is a well laid out space, filled with interesting cricket memorabilia dating back to the early 1900s.

Visit the Mount Gay Visitor Centre to see how the world’s oldest rum is made - and enjoy the tasting session afterwards!

At the Cockspur Beach Club on Brighton beach, you can visit their rum distillery, then relax on the beach with one of their famous Cockspur rum punches!

Back on the coast, take a stroll along the South Coast boardwalk which meanders along the waterfront between Rockley and Hastings. A number of inviting watering holes and good restaurants pop up all along the boardwalk, notably Blakey’s Bar, Naru and Tapas, which all come highly recommended.

The Historic Garrison Area is home to many historic treasures.

The island’s rich heritage and culture can be explored at the Barbados Museum, housed in the old military prison. Beneath the bastion of St. Anne’s Fort is a splendid Cannon Museum.

The recently re-discoverd Garrison Tunnels are soon to be opened to the public for tours. Stretching for over two miles underneath the Garrison, these mysterious tunnels seemingly used to provide drainage for the marshy Savannah, but may have also facilitated the secret movement of persons, dead or alive, from the Garrison area to the beach.

Also in the area, George Washington House is the only house outside the USA where Washington ever resided. A museum on the upper floor focuses on the rich cultural heritage of the island in the 17th and 18th centuries, when Barbados was one of the wealthiest countries in the hemisphere, with Bridgetown being one of the three biggest cities, along with Boston and London.

The “Changing of the Sentry” ceremony takes place at the Garrison every Wednesday at 11:45am.

Buying Property in Barbados

Property must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by the recording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry of title. A purchaser will require a registered Barbadian attorney to search the register and establish title to the property prior to the completion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and the vendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at which time the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement has been made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited.

The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporate vehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residents to purchase property through a company, that may be incorporated outside Barbados but which must be registered in Barbados.

The sale of property by all persons, including citizens or permanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%, plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 of the sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax provided that there is a building on the property.

Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser are approximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estate agent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both fees are subject to 15% VAT. Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual land tax at the following rates: First Bds.$125,000 = 0% Next Bds.$225,000 = 0.10% Next Bds.$500,000 = 0.65% Excess over Bds.$850,000 = 0.75% Following enactment of new legislation, there is a Bds$60,000 cap on land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as a residence by the person who owns the land upon which the house is erected.

There is a wide variety of property available, from studio apartments to plantation houses and an array of elegant residential developments, usually revolving around golf courses, a marina, a tennis resort, polo fields or lifestyle communities. Prime sites command prime prices and so, not surprisingly, it is the seafront properties, particularly on the west coast, that are the most expensive. The south and south-east coasts, and areas inland, offer a choice of attractive but more modest investment opportunities.

Villa rentals can provide a healthy return and this income can cover maintenance and management fees. Investors can also anticipate capital gains on their investment in the long term.

There are no restrictions on non-Barbadians owning property but you must observe the formality of getting permission from the Central Bank. Financing is not always available for non-Barbadians and so you may have to bring the full amount of the purchase price into the island. People must be sure to register their money with the Central Bank to facilitate future repatriation. It is obviously wiser to conduct any transactions through a reputable real estate agent and attorneyat-law. In addition to a number of successful and highly reputable local real estate companies, the growing interest in the property market in Barbados has attracted the attention of high-profile international companies such as Sotheby’s, Knight Frank and Savills.

This is a great endorsement of real estate in Barbados as a safe investment for foreign purchasers.

of watersports on offer. Alleyne’s Bay, Lower Carlton and Gibbes are lovely quiet beaches with easy access, but no beach facilities. Mullins is very busy with chair/umbrella rentals – lunch and drinks available from Mullins Beach Bar and a little further north at Bombas.

Folkstone Marine Reserve: A 2-km stretch of marine reserve.

Good snorkeling – equipment and lockers available for rent at the Visitors Centre. Ample shade, picnic tables and parking.

Holetown Area: Busy beaches – lots of watersports.

Some good choices for lunch in the area: Just Grillin’, Café Indigo, Sitar Indian Restaurant, and The Beach House. In the Limegrove complex, there are numerous places to have lunch.

Paynes Bay: White sandy beach, a favourite with families and cruise ship passengers.

Ideal swimming and snorkeling conditions – you may even spot some turtles. A public access path is next to No. 1 Sandy Lane, which also gives access to the splendid Sandy Lane beach where there is some of the best swimming to be had on the west coast.

Cattlewash: Miles upon miles of untouched beach along the island’s most rugged stretch of coast. Swimming here is extremely dangerous! There are some shallow rock pools at low tide – be sure to ask the locals where the safe areas are.

Sand Dunes Restaurant, Naniki and The Cove serve tasty Bajan lunches – great value.

Bathsheba: Fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf, a favourite with surfers. Round House and Atlantis are good choices for lunch.

CAUTION: The east coast has very dangerous currents – it is NOT safe for swimming!

Big waves – be sure to keep within your depth.

Crane Beach: One of the world’s most glorious beaches. Great for boogie boarding. Chair and umbrella rentals. Drinks sold on the beach. Lunch at L’Azure or The Carriage House at The Crane Resort features fresh fish and lobster. Cutters of Barbados is located very nearby and they serve delicious sandwiches, pizzas, salads, etc. They will deliver any size picnic to the beach including their special rum punch, beer and wine!

Foul Bay: A spectacular stretch of beach with a pleasant shaded area for picnics and easy parking.

Exercise extreme caution when swimming as there are strong currents. For security reasons, you are advised to use the northern end where the NCC wardens are present.

Bottom Bay: Beautiful, often deserted bay north of Sam Lord’s Castle. Park on the clifftop and go down the steps – beach chairs available for rent. Watch out for undercurrents.

Harrismith: A deserted beach that is probably best to visit in a group for a picnic. There are lovely shallow pools formed by the natural breakwater.

When hiring a car pay attention to the demonstration of the vehicle, as many models are different in the Caribbean.

Note the emergency hotline number of your rental company and check that they offer breakdown assistance. Many of the rental companies offer unlimited mileage, free delivery to and pick-up from hotels, villas, airport and seaport; baby seats and free road maps.

All vehicles are covered by insurance including unlimited liability for passengers and third party personal injury coverage. The Collision Damage Waiver is comprehensive insurance and is highly recommended, but does not usually cover damage to rims and tyres. Although credit card insurance covers you for most motor vehicles, it is recommended that you check which vehicles are exempt.

If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its position and call your car hire company and the police immediately – do not admit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511.

In Barbados we drive on the left. Drivers must have a Visitor’s Permit which can be obtained from most car rental offices, or from the Oistins, Hastings or Holetown Police Stations for BDS$10 - it is valid for two months from the date of issue. Seat belts are compulsory.

Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plate and locals are usually accommodating of your confusion and make allowances. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor you can be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorized security personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usually in uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” to guard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions and place them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that the vehicle is always locked when unattended.

Restaurant Guide It is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity of Barbados dining makes for refreshing points of difference for visitors to our shores. There are area maps for the west coast on page 140, the east coast on page 132 and the south coast on page 154.

Wherever you decide to dine be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A delicious choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the mammal porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other delicious catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish.

Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 17.5% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested.

Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially from December to May, so reservations are recommended. Bon Appétit!

Round House This early 19th century landmark with its breathtaking views, fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf, is not ‘just’ a beautiful place. Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would be at home. Exercise common sense about venturing into lonely locations; secure your valuables; never leave your belongings unattended on the beach or in full view in a locked car; always leave your key at front desk as lost keys mean insecurity.

Barbados has never had a shark attack. The most common sharks are Nurse Sharks, which do not attack. There are no poisonous spiders or snakes but a centipede bite, though not poisonous, can be very painful.

Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe damage to the skin so be sure to use a good sun screen and sit under an umbrella.

Before sitting underneath a tree, check that coconut palms do not have brown coconuts or drooping brown branches that are apt to fall.

If you are stuck by the spines of the black sea urchins found on the reef, although painful, they are harmless and will eventually dissolve and be absorbed by the body. Only pull them out if they are clearly protruding.
