Peter Carr

A wandering spirit, world traveller and an artist who happens to be a plumber, carpenter, sailor and home renovator, Australian Peter Carr arrived in Bequia “by accident” in the late 70s. In the 40 years since his first sketches of Port Elizabeth, Peter has returned for extended stays, with a full palette of colours and supplies, to explore and record the beauty and vibrancy of Bequia life. His vision of Bequia, its architecture, road scenes, fishermen and beach scenes are transmitted from the heart to the brush. In Peter Carr’s eyes, Bequia is not changing quite as fast as the rest of the world, and for that we should be thankful. Collected world-wide, his Bequia watercolours and oils lovingly record the timeless aspects of local life. Despite the changes, he continues to seek out and paint the places and traditional activities that have remained an important part of the island. His delightful book, “Bequia, A Feast of Color”, with 56 brilliant images and historical notes, is available in Bequia and online. Peter’s original watercolours and oils are on display in the “Peter Carr Room” at Mango Art Studio in Spring, Bequia.

If you’re new to this chain of islands you are about to discover what many long time and repeat visitors already know...there’s no place like the captivating islands of St. Vincent & the Grenadines – a world of spectacular seascapes where the people are charming and the pace is deliciously slow. Despite being one of the most mesmerizing tropical destinations, part of its allure is that it remains relatively unknown! Yet each year, while managing to maintain its unique character, St. Vincent & the Grenadines broadens its capacity to cater to a varied clientele, most recently extending its arms with intention to the discerning meetings and events market. This has been aided of course by the opening of the multi-million dollar Argyle International Airport (AIA). With eight carriers providing regularly scheduled passenger services, we’re happy to announce that American Airlines is now operating a weekly non-stop service between AIA and Miami International Airport and Air Canada Rouge is set to join them with weekly flights from Toronto’s Pearson International on Thursdays and a second flight scheduled to operate on Sundays during the peak winter travel season. While visiting, whether by boat or staying on land, we ask that you remain acutely aware of the fragile environment of these small islands and their communities. These waters provide some of the best diving grounds in the world. When snorkeling or diving do not touch or stand on coral structures and do not anchor on the reef. Never accept offers from individuals willing to discard of your garbage for a fee, please dispose of your garbage personally in the designated areas. Take along your own shopping bags and buy returnable bottles and items with the least amount of packaging. NATIONAL NINE MORNINGS FESTIVAL 16th to 24th Dec. A unique Vincentian tradition celebrated annually during the nine mornings before Christmas. Vincentians awake in the early hours and take part in various activities including concerts, dances, bicycle riding and sea baths. In the rural areas, the final morning usually ends with a steel band ‘jump-up’. Getting Around By Taxi Taxi Fares • Government sets the rates for fares, Argyle to Kingstown: but taxis are unmetered. Drivers Licences A temporary drivers licence, costing EC$100 (US$38) and valid for 6 months, can be obtained from the police station on Bay Street, the Licensing Authority on Halifax Street or from the special branch officer at the Argyle International Airport, with the presentation of a valid overseas drivers licence. Your car hire agent will assist you with getting a permit. If you have an International Driving Licence you must visit the Traffic Department in Kingstown to have it registered - There is no charge. Caricom nationals may drive with a valid Caricom drivers licence.

Ins & Outs Tip Sam’s Taxi & Tours (784 456-4338) is one of the more popular choices for sightseeing and getting around in general. Their drivers are courteous and friendly, giving entertaining commentary as you explore, and they offer a good selection of rental cars and jeeps should you wish to chart your own course.

Safety Tips CENTIPEDE/SCORPION BITES - While not lethal, severity and degree of discomfort depends on individual sensitivity. If there is any doubt, see a doctor, especially if a child has been bitten. SEA URCHINS - A black sea egg with long black spines. If the spines are protruding from your skin you can try to carefully remove them; if they are beneath the skin DO NOT try to “pick” them out as this could cause infection. Leave them in your skin and they will eventually dissolve. To be safe, soak with vinegar or some form of antiseptic. COCONUT PALMS - Never leave a baby or small child beneath a coconut palm because of the possibility of falling coconuts. ILLEGAL DRUGS - Severe penalties for possession of illegal drugs like Cannabis (weed or ganja) and cocaine exist – up to life imprisonment and yacht confiscation. Customs officials are well equipped and trained, so no attempts should be made to

import or export even small quantities for “personal use.” MANCHINEEL - Avoid contact with the fruit commonly known as Manchineel Apples. They look and smell like small apples, but are very poisonous. Sap from the tree and fruit blisters the skin and raindrops falling from the tree can produce the same unpleasant effect. Do not shelter under a manchineel tree when it is raining.

Argyle International Airport 1. The newly built Argyle International Airport (AIA) boasts a 9,000 ft. long runway and an expansive apron area, which facilitates aircraft ranging from twin otters to large commercial jets such as the Boeing 747. Modernized landing and navigational aids along with a fully lit runway and taxiways allow for unhampered night operations. 2. The AIA was constructed to accommodate 1.2 million travellers per year with a cargo terminal for imports and exports. 3. Travellers can access The Bank of St. Vincent & the Grenadines (BOSVG) foreign exchange bureau in the arrivals hall for foreign currency conversions as well as other banking services. 4. Flights from New York, Miami and Toronto are now available direct to Argyle International Airport and travel to St. Vincent is more accessible than ever. Since the forefront of travel and exploration drove sailors toward unknown coasts, people today can arrive at the same unspoiled terrain by chartering in the Grenadines. Island life is very much like it has been over the last few decades and while there are beautiful resorts tucked away on the more exclusive islands, the Grenadines is still a destination that isn’t overbuilt with developments that crowd shorelines. South of St. Vincent, the welcoming island of Bequia features a stunning landscape where colourful buildings sprinkle the abundantly green hills that friendly locals and businesses call home. The seven square mile island with a long seafaring history has become a popular sailing destination. To keep the tradition alive, organisations like the Junior Sailing Academy of Bequia give local youth the opportunity to learn the techniques to sail dinghies in Admiralty Bay. Their outings from Bequia Yacht Club provide skills necessary to earn RYA certifications through Sail Grenadines with a mission to help the young sailors prepare for careers in the maritime industry. Sail Grenadines, a family run luxury charter company also offer sail training holidays, bareboat, skippered, and fully crewed charters. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with the same local staff they have had correspondence with when customising itineraries. This season, their expansion to a bigger office also offers cruising sailors assistance with maintenance, engine and rigging services as well as ordering parts and marine surveys, through SVG Yacht Services. On the same dock, TradeWinds offer timeshare memberships and cabin sharing charters. Running day charters out of Port Elizabeth, the Bequia built Friendship Rose also offers day charters and private cruises to nearby islands aboard a lovely classic schooner. A short sail southeast from Bequia will bring you to Mustique, where travellers on any budget share both beach and bars in perfect harmony. World-class performances can be heard from Basil’s Bar and Restaurant, a delectable twist of music and cuisine. An exhilarating two-hour sail from Bequia lays Canouan, another picturesque island home to lovely walking trails and a reef protected lagoon on the windward side where the snorkeling is excellent. Abounding in natural beauty, steeped in history and rich in cultural heritage, St. Vincent is still relatively untouched by mass tourism and remains a wonderful place to get away from it all and soak up some true Caribbean culture.

stablished in 1969, the St. Vincent & the Grenadines National Trust is charged with the preservation of the natural, historic, cultural and built heritage of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, on behalf of its people.

The Trust owns several historic sites and cares for many more. It has a membership of several hundred and is active in the cultural life of the nation. The Trust is partly funded through Government, partly through membership fees and partly through donations and admission fees. Visiting the National Trust sites is a fascinating way to unearth some remarkable landscapes and learn more about the intriguing history and culture of this multiisland nation. A good place to start is at the old Carnegie Building on Halifax Street in the centre of Kingstown. Built for use as a public library in 1909, and paid for by Andrew Carnegie, the American millionaire and philanthropist, it is now the headquarters of the National Trust. The building houses the National Archaeological Collection - a unique display of artifacts from St. Vincent’s pre-historic past. Long before Christopher Columbus first sailed into the Caribbean, another great migration was occurring. While Roman armies were marching across Europe and

Buddhism was arriving in China, Carib people migrated from the mainland of South America up the island chain in hollowed out canoes, arriving in St. Vincent by around 160AD. They settled here, with a large population centre in the Argyle area. Today, the National Trust’s collection tells us much about how they lived, how they cooked their food, how they buried their children and what jewellery they wore. In the area of Rutland Vale, The Layou Petroglyph Park is a cultural landmark and the most easily accessible of St. Vincent’s Petroglyphs. The huge stone, carved with mysterious faces, probably dates from between 300AD and 600AD. It is a lasting reminder of the people who lived on St. Vincent long before Christopher Columbus set sail. The stone is huge – 7 meters wide – and features a face which might represent the Supreme Being Yocahu, a god believed to have brought cassava to the people. It is easy to see why our Carib predecessors chose this site as an important spiritual location. Located in a valley, shaded from the Caribbean sun by a huge canopy, the site is as soothing as it is cool. The sound

As a young Vincentian in search of his future, Luke Punnett’s early path in life took him off to India, where he came perilously close to departing this world via a severe case of malaria. That near-death experience had a profound effect on his psyche and upon returning to the Caribbean, to Barbados where his family was living, he went to ground by living with a Rastafarian community in what we in the West Indies call ‘de bush’. While to some people that might seem a bit wayward, his back-to-nature lifestyle introduced him to the wonderful world of organic farming. And, having developed a love for nature as a little boy growing up in the countryside of St. Vincent, Luke embraced everything he learned with a passion. The rest, as they say, is history. Luke picked himself up, studied permaculture in Trinidad, returned home to St Vincent where he met Alexandra, the love of his life, and together they set up a farm high up in the verdant lushness of the mountains. Today they operate a Community Supported Agriculture initiative subscription service, delivering weekly boxes of fresh organic produce to households throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadine islands. Their product list is long and varied, including the usual salad ingredients, herbs, root crops, fruit and vegetables, as well as unusual items like white turmeric and vanilla beans. It all depends on what’s in season. They also keep bees and Alexandra makes yogurt from fresh cow’s milk. Luke is an avid devotee of permaculture, which means using a conscious design process to mimic systems and patterns found in nature, in order to produce a varied yield abundantly and sustainably. Permaculture views nature as the greatest teacher and seeks to work with nature rather than against her. It involves the stacking of plants into multilayers reflecting the natural structure of a forest, except in Permaculture it is a productive food forest or forest garden. Trees are a critical part of Permaculture systems cycling both water and

nutrients from the ground below and creating the important micro climate in which other plants thrive. Such systems start with larger trees such as mango and scaling down to smaller fruit trees like avocado, over paw-paw, over banana, over okra, over lettuce, with herbs and pumpkin vines grown in between. In recognition of his expertise, Luke was commissioned to build a permaculture forest garden for a homeowner in Mustique. Luke’s philosophy is all about caring and giving back, both to the land and his community. Having firstly invited farmers to visit his farm to inspire them and share his new-found knowledge that makes so much sense for the economy and ecology of St. Vincent, he is now also teaching Permaculture 3-days a week at the Richmond Vale Academy, a Danish run agricultural project in the north of St. Vincent. Luke is very optimistic about the future of his country. The government has recently legislated to ban the use of styrofoam, glyphosate (Roundup) and the hunting of turtles. There is a large geothermal project under construction to cut the use of oil for energy. And with legalizing medical marijuana on the horizon, St. Vincent is poised to supply a very high quality, organically grown product. The Punnetts continue to dream of the future, with plans to expand into eco-lodges and open their Chatoyer Gardens Permaculture Farm to organized tours. Meanwhile, they have to leave the mountains Tuesday to Thursday each week and move to ‘town’, where Alexandra home schools their three children, River, Lily and Benjamin Sky. This chosen path is not by any means an easy one, but Luke Punnett and his family love it. They are happy and proud to build a life for themselves that is based on a healthy and harmonious relationship with nature.

rowing up in England, I’ve always wanted to visit St. Vincent. It’s the birthplace of my father who left the island aged seventeen, only returning twice in his lifetime. Since his passing eight years ago, I’ve felt a strong urge to connect to my Vincentian roots. My first visit in September 2018 has left an indelible impression on me. This beautiful, volcanic, mountainous island, lush and unspoilt by mainstream tourism, enchanted me from day one. Local Life

I stayed with my aunt in the village of Park Hill on the windward side of the island. Surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, I quickly adapted to a simpler, slower pace of life. Mornings began with a 4am wake-up call from a cockerel crowing heartily into the misty dawn and sipping a cup of “cocoa tea” on the porch, whilst watching the sun rise. Cocoa tea is made from locally grown cocoa, which is grated with local spices, and milk for a much loved and widely enjoyed morning beverage. St. Vincent now proudly produces its own 100% Vincentian chocolate. This high quality, award winning chocolate was even selected to make Queen Elizabeth’s 2017 Easter Egg!

New Tastes

Ice cold Mauby easily became my favourite drink. Refreshing and aromatic, it is something of an acquired taste and is reported to have medicinal properties. Made from the bark of the Mauby tree, it is boiled with cinnamon, orange peel, star anise and cloves, and sweetened to taste. Tri Tri Cakes are a popular Vincentian delicacy to enjoy. Tri Tri are tiny fish that hatch in the sea and migrate upstream. Locals flock to the mouths of rivers to catch Tri Tri using a net weighed down by rocks and covered in palm leaves to trap them. The Tri Tri are then cleaned, seasoned and fried into delicious cakes, I loved them!

Travelling along the scenic windward coast, there are spectacular views, from the pounding surf against rocky shores to the deep valleys bursting with tropical vegetation. I had the opportunity to visit the historic Black Point Tunnel, constructed by the British around 1815 using slave labour. Considered a marvel of engineering of its time, the 360-foot-long tunnel allowed easier transportation of sugar from the mills of the Grand Sable Estate to the wharf at Byrea. On this sweltering, hot and humid day, my thoughts turned to the slaves forced into the back-breaking toil of excavating the tunnel.

Other attractions at Black Point Heritage and Recreational Park include, a black sand beach, the Grand Sable River surrounded by natural vegetation, hundreds of coconut trees and a tropical garden. Against this back drop, it is unsurprising that the park was chosen as a film location for the movie, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl’.

Continuing north on the Windward Highway, taking us through even steeper, mountainous terrain, we headed towards Sandy Bay and Owia. I discovered the indigenous Carib people still live in this region and marvelled at the resilience of this native race who are still thriving in their own, self-sufficient community. The nearby Owia Salt Pond is a unique gift of nature, a natural bathing pool enclosed by lava peaks and ridges. Surrounded by mountains, this is a perfect spot for swimming, picnics and snorkeling.

Belmont Look Out

Belmont Look Out provides visitors with sweeping, panoramic views of the bountiful Mesopotamia Valley. Known locally as the “breadbasket” of the island, its fertile soil is responsible for producing much of St. Vincent’s food crops and is well worth a visit.

Kingstown is a tiny, bustling and vibrant capital. Also known as the “City of Arches”, with its cobbled streets, historic churches and stone buildings, you have a sense of going back in time. I visited the lively fish market, brimming with seasonal catches. A vendor used a large machete to chop my fish into steaks and skilfully scaled and cleaned them with it too. The main market is a great place to buy local fresh fruits, vegetables, spices and ground provisions. I found people in St. Vincent warm and friendly, helping me with directions or any other questions I had.

Beaches & Anchorages St. Vincent’s beaches are all public. Along the south coast, in the areas of Indian Bay, Villa, Young Island and Blue Lagoon the beaches have soft, golden sand and border many of the island’s hotels and restaurants making it convenient for ordering food and drinks. The best snorkeling and safest swimming is along the leeward coast. The beaches along the windward coast have black sand as a result of volcanic lava flows and the sea is often quite rough with dangerous undercurrents.

Blue Lagoon - Surrounded by palm trees, with a lovely beach. Excellent for swimming and snorkeling, and it’s a very pleasant anchorage. This is now a port of entry with Customs and Immigration on site at the the Blue Lagoon Marina, a full service marina offering 20 slips and 4 alongside berths with water and 110/220 electricity with 50 Hz. Moorings also available

Villa Beach and Indian Bay - These two white sand beaches, divided by a small hilly projection, are easily accessible. Both offer good snorkeling and provide lovely views of Young Island and some of the Grenadine islands to the south.

Kingstown - Customs and Immigration can be cleared at Kingstown Harbour between 8:30am and 4pm; there is a tie-up for yachts.

Young Island Cut - The anchorage here, lying in clear water, is a favourite with yachtspeople. Anchor with care, as the current sweeps both ways and the centre of the cut is 65 feet deep. Moorings are available, but stay clear of the sea bed close to Young Island itself.

Petit Byahaut - Four moorings are available at the resort at Petit Byahaut. There is a small beach, diving and snorkeling are superb. At Dinosaur Head (face of Byahaut point) you will find a 120-foot wall covered in sponges, seafans and coral.

On the windward side of the island there are a number of beautiful black sand beaches. Because of strong undercurrents, most Windward beaches are not recommended for swimming. Brighton Salt Pond – Brighton is a beautiful black sand beach and fascinating mangrove swamp. This site attracts many visitors and is a popular recreational and entertainment spot. Owia Salt Pond – On the northeastern coast, close to the Carib village of Owia. The 2-hour drive runs along the scenic coastline. This unusual gift of nature consists of a huge bathing pool enclosed by lava peaks and ridges. The pounding waves of the Atlantic crash into this barrier and then gently cascade into the pool. Surrounded by mountains and the thunderous surf, the area is an ideal spot for picnics, swimming and snorkeling. Facilities include gazebos, bar, shower and washrooms, children’s play area, craft centre and fire pits.

Buccament Bay - A well-protected, very calm bay with an excellent anchorage shelf in the eastern corner close to the beach. Exceptionally good snorkeling. Wallilabou - This picturesque bay is a good diving spot and reliable line handlers are available to help secure yachts. Customs and Immigration can be cleared here between 4pm and 6pm (up to 7pm during the busier winter season). Cumberland Bay - This bay is very deep and those boats wishing to anchor will need to do so with a bow or stern rope to a palm tree. Troumakar Bay - This small well-protected bay, with room for only a handful of yachts, has some mooring posts on the beach. There is good snorkeling along the northern shore. Chateaubelair - The bay here, with its 40-foot deep reef and array of brightly coloured fish, is a snorkeler’s dream. While usually a good anchorage, especially on the eastern half of the bay, the northerly swells in the winter months can cause difficulties. Customs and Immigration clearance is also available in Chateaubelair.

Like many Caribbean capitals, much of the colour and bustle of the island can be found in Kingstown’s Market Square at the corner of Bay and Bedford Streets. This is especially true on Fridays and Saturdays when the vendors bring in loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish.

ne of the first questions raised by visitors to St. Vincent & the Grenadines is where do we buy everything we need to feed ourselves? This is an especially important consideration for people who are renting a villa on one of the smaller islands or moving from place to place on a sailing vacation. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of generations of entrepreneurs, a system has developed that makes it possible to buy a wide range of essential groceries and luxury items, including wines and spirits. The regular ferryboats that link St. Vincent to the Grenadine islands provide a key supply chain that allows stores to offer a convenient inter-island delivery service. Shopping here definitely needs more planning but it can be fun. It’s a great chance to live like a local! The Market Square in Kingstown is a good place to start, and Saturday mornings are busiest. Brimming with life and authenticity, the market doesn’t merely provide you with fresh produce, but with a real Vincy experience – every purchase is a transaction with a person, and each person has a comment or story to share, if you have the time. And if you’re not sure how

to prepare and cook something like breadfruit, just ask! Chances are you’ll get several recipes from the vendors. If you are in need of groceries, the family owned and operated C.K. Greaves Supermarkets are a good choice. With branches located in Kingstown, Arnos Vale and Pembroke, they stock an extensive variety of imported and local food products, including dry goods, canned items, frozen meat and poultry and fresh fruit and vegetables. Greaves is well known for offering a reliable delivery service to Bequia and Union via the ferries, and will also deliver to some of the docks. Shoppers can conveniently place their order via telephone or email and pay by credit card. Once the goods have been packed into boxes, the order will be put onto the next ferry and the client notified of its expected arrival, ready for collection. Ferries to Bequia and the southern Grenadines load and offload at the Grenadines Wharf, located at the southern end of Bay Street. The adjacent Cruise Ship Complex has docking facilities for yachts as well as large passenger ships. Here you will also find a number of shops carrying a range of local art and craft. While hours of business vary from store to store, they generally open from 8am until noon, 1pm until 4pm on weekdays and half day on Saturdays. Banks normally open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 2pm and on Fridays 8am to 5pm. On Halifax Street you’ll find the old library building which was donated by the famous American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. The new library has moved to Lower Long Lane and the lovely Carnegie Building is now shared by the St. Vincent National Trust and the Alliance Française.

Resocialisation of Prisoners through Creative Entrepreneurship Grow in Time’s delightful product range is the culmination of technical training, design development and market research. Their artisans employ vetiver - a bunch grass indigenous to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which traditionally has been used for creating all types of functional items such as baskets, placemats and rugs. Their craftsmanship has been developed to high quality and after selling out in two Mustique Craft Fairs their products now enjoy a permanent outlet in the Mustique Depot on Mustique Island. Grow in Time is the award-winning marketing arm of the Sustainable Livelihoods Project started in H.M. Prisons Kingstown by artist/ designer and creative educator Vonnie Roudette in 2015. Since its inception, over 50 inmates have been trained and certified as professional producers, with three inmates having achieved professional trainer level. The largest vetiver grass mat to be produced in SVG was placed in the Prime Ministers’ Official Residence in Montrose and will be showcased in Heritage and History tours for visitors to the Residence. The 180 sq ft mat, made by 12 inmates, took six weeks of teamwork to produce under Roudette’s careful direction. Income generated through Grow in Time sales enables inmates to improve their own lives, assist their families and provide themselves with financial support upon discharge from prison. Whilst the programme provides inmates with a sense of productivity and creative possibility, the impact of the project is to be found in alternative livelihood creation with many former inmates being supported to continue their practice. Bequia’s Maritime Traditions In Bequia a ‘double-ender’ is a boat with two bows, modelled on the New England whaleboat form introduced into Bequia in the early 1870s by William ‘Old Bill’ Wallace. Today’s double-enders are strong race contenders in Bequia’s famous annual Easter Regatta, when the whole island comes out to cheer them on.

Rugged individualism and resourcefulness still flourish here; the sea and maritime activities will always be the lifeblood of the island and its people. Boat building remains an honoured calling, whether in life or miniature size, using tools and techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Bequia’s outstanding natural harbour, tucked deep into Admiralty Bay, and richly stocked waters made it a perfect location for the widespread development of marine skills – fishing (including whaling), boat building and navigation. Bequia enjoys the distinction of having once been pre-

eminent in the region’s whaling industry in the last quarter of the 19th century. It’s no surprise that many of its inhabitants today can trace their heritage to two of the island’s great whaling patriarchs, Joseph Ollivierre and William Wallace Jr., whose whaling stations on Bequia quite literally saved the life of the island and its people. From the earliest days of Bequia’s settlement and until quite recent times, boatbuilding has lain at the heart of the island’s success. Critical to the survival of Bequia’s small, closeknit community, this home-grown ‘industry’ was the cornerstone of the development of inter-island trading,

whaling and fishing – all of which sustained the island and its people in the difficult post-sugar years, and on into the twentieth century. Bequia was not just blessed with a superb natural harbour and quiet, protected shores on which to build; it also enjoyed a vital abundance of White Cedar for use in construction. Bequia’s first British settlers in the 1760s included a small but crucial core of carpenters, shipwrights and mariners whose skills – passed down, shared and augmented – were to form the basis of Bequia’s maritime strength in future generations. Between 1923 and 1990, seventy-one major trading vessels were built in Bequia – almost half the total for the entire country in that same period. With the majority built in the 1930s and 40s, the list of the thirty-seven builders reads like a roll call of Bequian families: Gooding, Sargeant, Adams, Mitchell, Wallace, Ollivierre, Hazell, Tannis, Cozier – their sheer numbers alone amply demonstrate the breadth of both the skill and the industry that supported the community. Today, with new technologies and materials superseding traditional methods of marine transport and its associated activities, classic, old-time boat building in Bequia is now something of a rarity. Thankfully though, there are a few who are still building, working hard at keeping this tradition alive and quietly proud to call themselves Bequian boat builders.

Take some time to explore Bequia – the variety on this uniquely enchanting island truly belies its size.

isitors are often surprised to find that on an island of only seven square miles, when you scratch the surface just a little, you’ll discover an intriguing history, a fascinating natural environment and above all, a wonderfully charming human element. Whether on land, or on the sea, Bequia has a bountiful array of places to explore and a dependable range of transportation options are available for visitors to the island. Hiring a vehicle is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at your own pace. The island is small and easy to navigate so it’s almost impossible to get lost! A Visitor’s Driving Permit (EC$100) must

first be obtained from the Revenue Office in Port Elizabeth, where you will be asked to present your own National Driver’s Licence or a full International Driver’s Licence. Alternatively, if you book your rental vehicle in advance, your agent can do this paperwork for you. Taxis are widely used for getting around and the island has a reliable, if not unique fleet of openbacked taxi vans. The operators are known for their friendliness and courtesy and during the day you can usually find them gathered under the almond trees in the harbour, sporting colourful names like “Challenger”, “Jump In”, “Fat Man” and “Pikie”.

Most taxis offer two to three hour island tours, complete with running commentary! Rates are fixed and are listed in the Bequia Tourism Association office but it’s always advisable to agree on the fare and duration beforehand – and whether your quote is in EC$ or US$. Water taxis are plentiful in and around Admiralty Bay and provide a pick-up and drop-off service to yachts in the bay. They will also take passengers to and from Princess Margaret and Lower Bay beaches. You can find them around the dinghy docks at Frangipani and Gingerbread or at the main dinghy dock in Port Elizabeth. The cost is about EC$20-$25 one way to the beaches, less for a trip across the harbour. ‘Dollar Vans’ are closed-in mini vans which have a regular run to most parts of the island. Often crowded and rarely without on-board music, they easily represent the cheapest way to get around – Bequia style! The main setting down point in Port Elizabeth is by the ferry dock and you can enquire at the nearby Tourism Office for the routes. The normal stops are unmarked, so look out for people gathered by the roadside, or simply hail one as it approaches and ask

them if they are going your way! Fares are collected once on board and vary from EC$1.50 to EC$5 per person depending on the length of journey. So, if you’re up for some random exploring adventures, here are some of our favourite spots... Port Elizabeth is nestled along the waterfront of Admiralty Bay and rises into the surrounding hills. A number of brightly coloured shops, houses, restaurants, small hotels and guest-houses complete the captivating scene. While wandering around the harbour, look out for the ‘House of Parliament’ – the local name given to the shaded waterfront area under the almond trees, where the island’s talented artists and craftspeople display their ware and taxis assemble to collect and deposit their passengers. Bequians of all walks of life gravitate here to discuss the topic of the moment, usually politics or some colourful island gossip. Discussions can be loud and passionate, deviating quickly and unpredictably, often interspersed with boisterous bouts of laughter. The delightful Belmont Walkway is a continuous coastal path that meanders along the south shore of

Admiralty Bay, with a number of inviting little bars and restaurants all along the way. Continuing on from the walkway is the Princess Margaret Coastal Trail leading to Princess Margaret beach. The latter part of this coastal trail was damaged during high seas in 2018 but the beach is still accessible using the old path that hugs the cliff. At the end of Princess Margaret beach there is another trail over the hill to Lower Bay, just beyond. On the south-east coast is Friendship Bay and St. Hilaire Point, where many a Bequia boat has taken shape along the shores, including the much loved Friendship Rose, which operated as the main ferry between Bequia and St. Vincent for 25 years. Located on a slope at St. Hilaire Point, overlooking Friendship Bay is the Bequia Boat Museum which houses an interesting collection of unique Bequia boats, old photographs and boat building tools of a bygone era. As you make your way west along the winding southside road you’ll eventually come to the colourful fishing community of Paget Farm where there are beautiful views across the sea to the uninhabited islands of Petit Nevis, site of the old whaling station, and Isle a Quatre. The James F. Mitchell Airport which was opened in 1992 is just beyond. About a mile past the airport is the spanking new resort, The Liming, where it is said you can “discover the art of doing nothing”! Just beyond is Moonhole, the extraordinary vision and creation of American, the late Tom Johnston, which resulted in a private development

of over twenty imaginatively built, ‘free-form’ homes that cling to the natural curves of the hillside. There are no windows, no doors – just openings. The ceilings and walls tend to go their own way, no straight lines, some even have trees growing right in the living room! The windward side of the island is also the most fertile, and it was here in the 18th and 19th centuries that several of Bequia’s nine sugar plantations were situated. Firefly Plantation Hotel at Spring is a charming boutique hotel set in the grounds of a 225 year old, 30acre working plantation. The ‘Great House’, where the elegant yet informal bar and restaurant are now located, is built on the foundations of the original 18th century sugar plantation’s estate house. Plantation Tours of the estate are offered, giving visitors an excellent insight into the fascinating history of the old Spring Plantation and the adjoining sugar mill and indigo processing plant. Visitors will also have the opportunity to sample many of the seasonal fruits and vegetables and learn about the various crops, herbs and flowers you will encounter. Afterwards, stop at Crescent Beach (Industry Bay) for a swim and snorkel in the bay and have lunch at the charming Sugar Reef Café. Great care has been taken in the details to make Sugar Reef a one-of-a-kind gem, morphing laid-back charm with a noticeable degree of elegance. Located beyond Spring and Industry, at Park Beach, ‘Brother’ King nurtures endangered Hawksbill turtles, of all sizes, until they are able to fend for themselves in the open ocean.

Beaches & Anchorages Admiralty Bay

One of the best harbours in the Caribbean because of its deep protected ‘U’ shape, calm, clear waters and ample depth, allowing large boats to come close to shore for maintenance. When anchoring stay clear of the ferry route to the main jetty.

Princess Margaret Beach

Princess Margaret A popular anchorage – generally calm with a glorious stretch of beach and perfect swimming conditions. (Yachts are required to anchor at least 200 yards off shore for the safety of swimmers). Jack’s Beach Bar offers drinks and a great menu and there is a dinghy dock.

Lower Bay One of Bequia’s best beaches. A long stretch of powdery white sand with crystal clear water, excellent for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing with beach chairs available for rent. A stretch of on-shore reef provides an area of shallow pools along the shoreline making it especially suitable for children. Keegan’s Beachside Bar & Restaurant and De Reef Beach Bar are situated in the middle of the bay.

Lower Bay

Friendship Bay On the south side, Friendship Bay is a sheltered, crescent shaped bay with lots of shade. The stylish Bequia Beach Hotel is located here – enquire about their day passes and take advantage of the hotel’s first class facilities.

In Caribbean life, pitching utopian ideals and ideologies is a regular pastime, as natural and prevalent as the almond tree leaves gusting along the shore. Fortunately, Bequians possess an amiable knack for taking lofted ‘what if’ queries to tangible, real world task.

n one particular April 2016 evening, community organizers and activists gathered tableside, flanked right and left by professional filmmakers, artists, musicians and singers, some having recently completed a twelve-week, teacher-student film programme. Reclaiming Paget Farm, a documentary retrospective, based on the evolution of Bequia’s south side, left a resounding impression on those involved of familial inclusivity and warm success. As the crowd fervently dialogued their perspectives, experiences, and social concerns, the idea that a united collective, based on harnessing creativity, might garner lasting positive impact island-wide. Later that year, Reclaiming Paget Farm won two Caribbean film awards, and ‘The Hub’, with its aspirational philosophy was born. An education in a myriad of the creative arts,

with professional instruction, and peer-inclusive mentorship form The Hub’s benchmark activities. January 2019 marks the official opening of a new welcoming community space, The Creative Arts Centre. Located in Port Elizabeth, behind the Anglican Church, the building stands symbolic of jubilant transformation in its colourful new façade and interior restoration. A roster of handson workshops and activities, including filmmaking, dance, voice, modeling, and painting, are slated to keep many busy at practice. The Centre also houses its own shop, showcasing and selling handmade crafts and creations. Armed with a roadmap to create, inspire, and enhance opportunities for Bequia’s youth, and the community at large, The Hub has made fast tracks achieving its objectives. Through The Hub’s tutelage,

both Shakera Hazell, a single mother of two, and Estar Mars, were offered the chance to evolve a story Shakera composed, a heartfelt, personal tale of triumph over harsh treatment and social judgment, into a working script. From script followed film adaptation and My Life, You Ask? received the first place award for best screenplay and best film in 2017’s Caribbean Youth Film Festival. The Hub’s core members, Danielle Collinson, Bec Horner, Jessica Jaja, Waizero Johnson, Rinaldo Ollivierre, and Colin Peters produce Bequia’s annual ‘Positive Vibes’ festival in December, now in its 4th year, kicking off the winter season with a fun cornucopia of art, live music, and fashion. The family-focused entertainment, featuring local specialty food, is the celebratory culmination of The Hub’s concerted, community efforts. A Hub participant and volunteer, Jessica King, who’s currently attending college in Trinidad, is already eager for more involvement upon her return. “The Hub is an extraordinary group,” she says. “I was able to contribute to my island, which I love dearly. Island ferries to St. Vincent are usually very punctual – you can set your clock by them (see ferry schedules on page 18, or you can check at the Bequia Tourism Office). Both The Admiralty and Bequia Express ferries offer regular sailings every day, to and from St. Vincent, in the comfort of air-conditioned lounges or up on deck in the fresh sea breeze. Next to the jetty is the Bequia Tourism Association office, so if your first stop is for information, their staff will be pleased to help you. Along Front Street the yellow Government building houses the Revenue Office and Post Office, Harbour Master, Customs and Immigration. Enquire here about yachting and mooring regulations. Patrick “Doc” Chevailler Silma Duncan Doc is well-known throughout the Grenadines as the sailing doctor who became a successful artist. He specializes in marine paintings, depicting life above and below the surface. And while his style has evolved over the years, his love of the sea has never diminished, as can be seen in the intricate detail and beauty of his work. His paintings are in high demand, with many adorning walls around the world. He has also established a fine reputation for his commission work, including producing entire collections based on specific themes. Bequian poet, Silma Duncan has been dubbed the Poet Laureate of SVG. Recognized by St. James Palace for a poem honouring the late Princess Diana, she’s been written up in Caraibes Magazine, published in the London Independent and interviewed by BBC Radio in Manchester. Silma was also recognized for her work in poetry by the Association of Writers of SVG. Her poetry covers a wide range of subjects ranging from love, relationships and the treatment of women, to a tribute to the famous Black Carib leader, Joseph Chatoyer. Silma recently released her 8th book of poetry entitled, The Humpback Whale and a delightfully illustrated children’s book, A Day in the Life of a Turtle. The Bequia Nautical Art Museum The quiet fishing village of Paget Farm is the backdrop for Bequia’s fascinating new Nautical Art Museum – a haven of tranquility nestled on a hillside amongst lush tropical vegetation and featuring the exceptional nautical paintings of Patrick “Doc” Chevailler, alongside the exquisite creations of well-known folk artists, Sam McDowell and his wife Donna, who lived there for many years. Mustiqu As part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the 1,400 acre island of Mustique shares the early history common to all of the islands. When European planters arrived in the 1740s they discovered they could easily and successfully produce sugar. During the 1700s, Mustique was heavily defended against the possibility of French invaders and the remains of three forts can still be seen. The sugar-based economy of the Grenadines prospered until sugar beet usurped West Indian cane as the major source of sugar.

ustique’s sugar plantations were soon abandoned and became overgrown by the encroaching jungle leaving only the sugar mill at Endeavour and its cotton house. The island was eventually purchased in 1958 by Lord Glenconner (the Honourable Colin Tennant) under whose guidance the island began to flourish again. Mustique remained relatively quiet although its reputation as an idyllic getaway was growing. In 1960, HRH The Princess Margaret accepted a 10-acre plot of land as a wedding gift from Colin Tennant and a new era began. The Mustique Company was formed in 1968 and the airport opened the following year. It was around this time that the first new villas (mainly designed by Oliver Messel and Arne Hasselqvist) were built and the Cotton House opened as an inn. Improvements continued, including new roads, reliable electricity and communications, a desalination plant, a medical clinic and air transport services. An educational trust provides local children with schooling and a medical trust provides all islanders with medical insurance. The Mustique Company acts as custodian for the entire island and its mandate is to protect the environment and retain the privacy and tranquillity that has made Mustique the ideal, peaceful and secure Caribbean hideaway. Mustique is such a peaceful island you may find yourself totally alone on its white sand beaches; even renowned spots such as lovely Macaroni Beach remain tranquil and uncrowded. Apart from a large plain in the north, the island is essentially composed of seven valleys, each with a white sand beach and wooded hills that rise to a height of 495 feet.

The only anchorage in Mustique is Britannia Bay, which is also where the public jetty and wharf are located. There is a Mooring Fee of EC$200 (US$75) for up to three nights. Mustique is a port of entry to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Customs and Immigration are located at the airport. Mustique Moorings (call VHF 16/68) control the 28 moorings. Vessels carrying more than 25 people are prohibited. Rental jeeps, ‘mules’ (heavy-duty golf carts), motorbikes and mountain bikes are available from Mustique Mechanical Services. There are a few taxis available in Lovell Village and at the airport. Nature walking and equestrian trails are in abundance and a great way to experience the island at your leisure. The Equestrian Centre has horses to suit every riding level and offers treks up into the hills, or rides through the surf on a white sand beach. There is a clinic across from the airport with an oncall doctor available (Tel: 488-8353). With a harbour front focal point, Lovell Village is the commercial heart of the island. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be purchased from Stanley Junior’s stall on the waterfront and groceries can be bought at Corea’s Food Store and the Mustique General Store. The famous Basil’s Bar & Restaurant is just across the road. Now in its 22nd year, the annual Mustique Blues Festival is held every year in late January/early February at Basil’s. The only hotels on the island are the exquisite Cotton House & Spa, and Firefly, a small, exclusive, privately-owned boutique hotel with just six intimate fantasy rooms. The Firefly bar is a wonderful spot to enjoy their famous cocktails while taking in the sunset!

Britannia Bay – Although rather choppy, Britannia Bay is the only suitable anchorage in Mustique. The water is sparkling clear and is wonderful for snorkeling and swimming. Take care entering by boat as the Montezuma Shoal (just west of the bay) is quite hazardous. There is a red and black beacon on the reef, stay at least quarter of a mile away. Lagoon Bay – If you follow the southward road out of the village and then the shoreline path, you will happen upon this delightful beach with perfect swimming conditions. Gelliceaux Bay – This is one of the ten marine conservation areas in St. Vincent & the Grenadines. These areas are important marine habitats set aside for special management. The snorkeling here is sublime. Macaroni Bay – One of the most spectacular beaches on the island, which also makes it one of the most popular. There is a covered picnic area here and the swimming is delightful. L’Ansecoy Bay – This wide beach is located at the north end of the island. Offshore lies the jutting hulk of the French liner, Antilles, which went aground in 1971. Endeavour Bay – Ideal conditions for picnicking, swimming, paddle boarding and snorkeling.

Charlestown Bay (also known as Grand Bay) is the main anchorage and location of the village. Enter between the red and green markers. Marcus (Iceman) offers moorings for rent (contact him on VHF 16, through Tamarind Beach Hotel or see above). There is a ferry dock in the bay and a dinghy dock off the Tamarind Beach Hotel. Rameau Bay, just north of Charlestown, is a gorgeous, quiet anchorage but may require two anchors – good snorkeling around the rocks. Further north is Corbay, the most sheltered anchorage and a great location for snorkeling or diving. There is a glorious beach at Mahault Bay in the north, while Friendship Bay in the south offers good snorkeling.

Tobago Cays Marine Park was established to protect this precious ecosystem of nine islands including: the five uninhabited islands of the Tobago Cays, the uninhabitated islets off Mayreau - Catholic Island, Jondall and Mayreau Baleine; as well as the populated island of Mayreau itself. All visitors to the Tobago Cays Marine Park are required to pay user fees according to the purpose of their visit; including visitors on private yachts, charter yachts, cruise ships and dive boats, who pay EC$10 per person and EC$5 for children aged 12 and under. The Tobago Cays The Tobago Cays are a cluster of five tiny, uninhabited cays, collectively sheltered from the open sea by the appropriately named Horseshoe Reef, considered to be the most scenic anchorages in the Grenadines and, for many people, the entire Caribbean. The Tobago Cays Marine Park is located just a short boat ride from Palm Island, PSV, Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island and is also easily accessible for day trips from Bequia, Mustique and St. Vincent. It encompasses nine islands, including the five uninhabited islands of the Tobago Cays, namely Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradal, Petit Tabac and Jamesby, plus the populated island of Mayreau as well as Catholic Island, Jondall and Mayreau Baleine. The highlights include Catholic Rock Bird Sanctuary: Various sea-bird nesting and roosting colonies can be observed from a boat, ideally using binoculars or telescope. Purunia Wreck: This wreck of a 140-ft World War I British gunship that sank in 1918 just off the western coast of Mayreau offers a good opportunity for scuba divers. Mayreau Gardens: An excellent coral reef with lots of fish and colourful sponges for viewing by scuba divers.

Horseshoe Reef: Snorkelers can visit this outstanding coral reef with an abundance of fish and coral inside the reef, while scuba divers can explore the magical world on the ocean side. Baradal Turtle Sanctuary: This is a protected area, designated by marker buoys, where snorkelers can observe green and hawksbill turtles foraging freely. Petit Tabac: This isolated beach and wild tropical garden was the location where the desert island scene in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” was filmed. Petit Bateau, Jamesby and Petit Rameau: Each of these delightful small islands offer surprisingly interesting hiking trails with an abundant variety of tropical flora, including bromeliads; as well as fauna such as iguanas, hermit crabs and birds. Mayreau One of Mayreau’s main attractions is the small Roman Catholic Church, solidly built of local stone and perched on top of the central hill. With the added attraction of a small nature museum, this rustic building also offers a magnificent panoramic view from its lofty location - sweeping down over the village, the hillside, the coastline, across the sea and onto the spectacular beauty of the Tobago Cays. Nature lovers can ramble along several hiking trails with guides, where it is possible to spot wildlife, including harmless reptiles such as iguana, tortoise, tree frogs and ground lizards; along with many bird species, the most striking of which are the mockingbird, bananaquit, cuckoo and tiny hummingbird. Mayreau is blessed with several superb white-sand beaches and Saltwhistle Bay is the best of them all. With calm, turquoise water and a palm-fringed crescent of sand, this lovely bay is tranquil and charming. Nestled amongst the coconut trees can be found the tiny and recently renovated Saltwhistle Bay Resort with a bar and restaurant. For a more ‘rootsy’ experience, there are several no-frills shacks dotted along the beach that serve food. Saline Bay in the south, with its nearly mile long, white sandy beach is another beautiful spot. It is very popular with visiting cruise ship passengers. Scuba divers who visit the island should arrange a visit to the Mayreau Gardens, one of the most outstanding coral reefs in the Southern Caribbean. If you visit Mayreau please do not dispose of any garbage, as there is no dump. Even if somebody offers to get rid of it for you, it is better to take it back off the island yourself. The good news for all visitors to the Southern Grenadines, sailors and landbased tourists alike, is that Union Island is buzzing again. This interesting little island has long been an important link in the island chain, but today, thanks to a revitalised spirit of enterprise, Union has a lot more to offer the modern traveller. From world-class kitesurfing, to superb sailing and diving, improved accommodation, well-stocked supply stores and a new wave of attractive restaurants and bars, Union now has it all.

Exploring Union Island Located at the heart of the Southern Grenadines, and surrounded by some of the best sailing and diving waters in the world, Union Island moves very much to the beat of its own drum. The British Crown bought Union Island from the last private owner in 1910 and set up a Land Settlement Scheme to sell 2 and 4-acre lots to the islanders at peppercorn prices. While the tiny landed society survived on subsistence farming and fishing, many inhabitants had to leave in search of better opportunities. Today, the improved economy revolves around fisheries, exporting several thousand pounds of conch per week, and tourism, which has created sufficient jobs to allow more locals to remain at home. With a population of approximately 3,000 souls, well ministered to by 12 churches of various Christian

denominations, Union Island also has a primary and secondary school, a medical clinic, a bank, a post office, a police station and an airport. Radio Grenadines, a non-profit online radio station, shares local news and community insights. The main crops are corn and pigeon peas, but local farmers also grow a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables that are sold at the Clifton market, along with produce from the mainland. Union Island is also famous for its high quality salt, produced under drought conditions at the Belmont Salt Pond, which is sold for EC$10 per lb. The small but busy Clifton Harbour is the centre of the day-chartering industry in the Southern Grenadines. Scaramouche, Wind and Sea, Yannis Sail, Chantours and Grey Goose provide a good selection of tours. This sheltered anchorage is the most popular mooring in Union as it is close to Bougainvilla Hotel, Anchorage Yacht Club, C&A Enterprises Supermarket, several very good restaurants and bars, and a few guest-houses. Clifton Harbour offers amazing conditions for kitesurfing and kiters flock to the excellent facilities at JT Pro Center’s Kitsesurfing School on Kite Beach, including a beach bar, which is a cool place for non-kiters to go to relax or enjoy some stand up paddling. A new “must see” for visitors to Union Island is the

Ashton Lagoon Restoration Project being undertaken by Sustainable Grenadines, the largest mangrove forest and lagoon in St. Vincent and The Grenadines. The Interpretive Centre arranges guided tours into the lagoon with interpretive signs along the trail. New moorings near the sheltered Frigate Rock offer a wonderful new layover option in the Southern Grenadines. The reefs in this area are in wonderful condition and Glenroy Adams of Grenadines Dive has been successfully taking divers to the many nearby superb dive sites for over 30 years. Just 5-minutes drive from Clifton is Bigsand, a sheltered, white, crescent-shaped beach, where the new Sparrow’s Beach Club and Restaurant provides day moorings, good general facilities and delicious food and cocktails. The swimming and snorkeling here are excellent with moorings provided for visiting yachts. Their convenient 5-minute shuttle from Clifton runs constantly from morning until night. The tranquil Chatham (Back) Bay offers excellent snorkeling in crystal clear, teal coloured water, beautiful sunsets and seasonal flocks of Pelicans. Several small beach huts serve local food and cold drinks. The best way to get there is by boat.

A 1-hour taxi tour can give visitors a good overview of the island, with stops at the island’s second town, Ashton, and the small fishing centre of Campbell. While passing through the various communities, visitors often witness traditional practices such as making gravel by hand at the stone quarry or slow burning wood to make charcoal for cooking. There is also the chance of spotting indigenous animals like iguanas, donkeys, agouti and wild goats. Union Island’s interesting scenery offers good conditions for hiking such as the trail from Clifton over to Chatham Bay. The fitter and more adventurous hikers can join members of the local community who have developed steep trails that climb through lush greenery to Parnassus and Mt. Olympus, where the extra effort is rewarded with some truly spectacular views of the entire Grenadines. Turtle watching expeditions provide another enjoyable option. Run by Jeremie Tronet, a professional kitesurfer, this kiteschool has redefined Union Island as ‘the’ action spot in St. Vincent and The Grenadines, and indeed the world, for water board sports. The combination of the absolutely amazing conditions, the facilities and unique services offered by Jeremie and his team create a fantastic experience. Although some beginners learn faster than others, Jeremie says 3 to 4 hours will get you up on the board and feeling the sensation. For the experienced kiteboarder there are photo and video shoots using professional camera equipment, advanced lessons to improve style from the most basic trick to the most advanced handle passes and boat tours to hidden spots. If the wind isn’t present for a day or two or you are not a kiter, you will be able to experience deep sea fishing, surfing and SUPing tours. JT Pro Center offers wonderful SUP tours paddling downwind with the currents from Kite Beach around to the Frigate Island lagoon and mangroves with clear water and bird life, through the quaint village of Ashton, finishing on Campbell beach. Jeremie says this tour is such a breeze you can do it lying down. Kite Beach is also the party centre! This is especially true at the JT Pro Center Full Moon Beach Party - now a well talked about party in St. Vincent and the Grenadines because of the “Moon-Light Kitesurfing Show”. The party features all music genres, which brings tourists and locals of all ages together for a unique party experience once a month. Around 6:30pm, people start gathering as the barbecue food stalls fire up and the bar starts serving a wide selection of drinks. The party is then illuminated by the light show where glow sticks, glow balls, lasers and fireballs share the moonlight. Grenadines Tours from Union Island Day tours sailing around the southern Grenadines are absolutely superb. A day sailing to the Tobago Cays Marine Park, beginning with a rum punch in the sea at Saltwhistle Bay in Mayreau, snorkeling on the World’s End Reef and ending with a lovely lunch moored in the Cays is at the top of the list. A swim at the sandy island of Morpion followed by snorkeling and lunch in tranquil Chatham Bay is another blissful day. Sébastien Sailly, an extremely knowledgeable fisherman, is now offering 6 hour or all day deep sea and 4 hour sport fishing trips in his Contender 30’ with twin 225 four stroke engines. Sébastien also offers catch and release fly fishing expeditions in the shallows around Union Island where the size of the bone fish is impressive. Jeremie Tronet has brought in a 33 ft., centre console boat with twin 350HP outboards, principally for kitesurfing trips, but he also offers power boat tours. Restoration of Ashton Lagoon In addition to being one of the largest bays in the Grenadines, Ashton Lagoon is also home to one of the region’s most extensive mangrove habitats. For centuries it has been an essential component within the ecological framework of Union, providing a wealth of biodiversity, a nurturing environment for marine life and birds, as well as economic and recreational opportunities for the island’s inhabitants. In 1986, Ashton Lagoon was designated as a Marine Conservation Area and an Important Birding Area. Given that vital environmental importance, it is inexcusable that in 1994 – despite local resistance - developers were allowed to commence work on a clearly incongruous project that encompassed building a causeway to link Frigate Rock to the island, a 300-berth marina complex with condominiums on top of the outer reefs, and a 50-acre golf course on the mangroves. Call it karma if you will, but the ill-conceived project thankfully ground to a complete halt after just one year when the company declared bankruptcy. Sadly, and inevitably, a huge amount of catastrophic damage had already been inflicted on the lagoon, including stagnant polluted water, reduced marine life and compromised mangroves. That was the catalyst for a local NGO, SusGen (Sustainable Grenadines Inc.), to launch the Ashton Lagoon Restoration Project in collaboration with the government, the University of the West Indies and civil volunteer groups, with core funding from the Lighthouse Foundation of Germany. After many years of planning, the restoration officially began in December 2017, when the causeway was excavated to allow fresh seawater to flow into the lagoon for the first time in 25 years. Today, visitors can access in-depth information at the Ashton Lagoon Interpretive Centre; observe a wide variety of resident and migratory shorebirds, seabirds and landbirds from two watch towers and a viewing deck; go on guided tours into the lagoon; or walk along a trail where interpretive signs provide interesting historical and ecological information. Sailors should note that new moorings have been installed in the shelter of Frigate Rock, adding a wonderful new layover option in the Southern Grenadines. We encourage all visitors to Union Island to spend some time at Ashton Lagoon Restoration Project. It is a beautiful location, you will enjoy what you see and learn, and your support is key to the sustainability of the project.
