There is also a wide variety of local craftwork, much of it created out of the island’s most readily available natural resources such as clay, mahogany, pandanus grass, coconut, palm fronds, bamboo, shells and leather. The Pelican Craft Centre, near the Bridgetown Port, has the largest selection of local craft on the island and you can watch many of the craftspeople at work. The Earthworks Complex in St. Thomas also presents an excellent variety

of high quality craft, particularly pottery and batik.

There is also an off-shore bank reef located about 1km off the West and South Coasts – something few other Caribbean islands can boast. The island is also renowned for its rare and cryptic species, or “critters” as some divers and snorkelers refer to them, such as seahorses, frogfish and batfish. And sea turtles have become so common in Barbados’ waters these days, that rarely a dive or snorkel goes by without seeing at least one. In fact, the island hosts four species of nesting turtles and has the second-largest hawksbill turtle breeding population in the Caribbean. Barbados offers the opportunity to cross many items off a diver’s bucket list. But if that wasn’t enough to draw the attention of the global diving community, a new project aims to put Barbados firmly on the map (no pun intended). Exploring Barbados

A mere 21 miles long by 14 miles at its widest point, you are never more than 20 minutes from the coast, and in many cases, there is usually somewhere else to visit quite close by. Hiring a car is an excellent idea as this allows you to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and attractions that are of particular interest to you. Touring the West & North

Holetown, in the parish of St. James, is the site where John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name of England’s King James. Nowadays it’s a busy area of posh hotels, exquisite restaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Just north of Holetown is the architectural gem of St. James Parish Church, which stands on one of the oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referred to as “God’s Acre”. Many of the original settlers and a number of prominent Barbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard. Tours are offered Monday to Thursday from 9am - 1pm.

A few miles further north, Gibbes Beach and Mullins are ideal for a swim, and the colourful and very laid back Bombas Beach Bar, just north of Mullins, is a perfect stop for “refuelling”! There’s a wonderful, salty charm in the quaint little seaside town of Speightstown, the first major port and commercial centre of Barbados, with its historic buildings, shaded esplanade and waterfront boardwalk, colourful roadside vendors, fish market and charming cafés and eateries. Once known as Little Bristol because ships laden with sugar and other commodities left Speightstown bound for Bristol in England. A visit to Arlington House Museum gives an introduction to this old port town’s role in Barbados’ sugar industry and the brisk trade it once had with England. On the upper floors, kids will love the chance to captain a ship and meet a pirate! And art lovers will really enjoy a walk around the impressive Gallery of Caribbean Art, located on the upper floor of the shopping centre just next door. There are a number of splendid little restaurants and bars all along the beachfront and boardwalk where you can grab a casual bite and a cold drink before moving on. Just past the Port St. Charles and Port Ferdinand Marinas, and the swanky new Nikki Beach Club, is the charming little fishing village of Six Men’s which has produced some of

the island’s most skilled boat builders. Interestingly, during the 19th century, whalers set sail from this area. Today, fishermen still bring their fresh catches ashore here and sell them at the roadside. The delightful Fish Pot Restaurant at Little Good Harbour is a wonderful stop for lunch as you explore the north of the island. The steep, weathered cliffs of the northern coastline are constantly pounded by waves coming in from the Atlantic. The resulting erosion provides countless photo opportunities with dramatic rock formations, powerful blow holes and sea caves. Near Archer’s Bay on the north west coast you’ll find the new Catch 22 Restaurant at Sunset Point. Perched on a remote cliff top with beautiful ocean views, it’s a wonderful stop for lunch while touring the island. It’s also a great vantage point for whale watching between February and April. The Animal Flower Cave is located on the craggy cliff tops at the northernmost point of the island. This large sea cave, with several huge chambers, is filled with pools, unusual rock formations and a few sea anemones. The cliff-top restaurant offers tasty local dishes and awesome ocean views. There are also some marvellous photo opportunities to be had at River Bay, Little Bay and Cove Bay on the north east coast.

The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is set amidst a lush Mahogany grove where you can mingle with free roaming monkeys, turtles, deer, maras and many other animals. There is a walk-in bird sanctuary and iguana sanctuary but feeding time at 2pm is the most popular time to visit. Just next door, Grenade Hall Forest & Signal Station houses many interesting artifacts, including preColombian tools unearthed during its restoration. The forest has over 2 km of trails winding through many species of trees and plant life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; intriguing, informative and educational - and of course - more monkeys! Another fascinating stop in the north is St. Nicholas Abbey, one of only three remaining Jacobean houses in the western hemisphere, and probably the oldest original building on the island. Visitors can sample their award winning, special aged rum in the plantation bond where it is hand-bottled and sold. The north-eastern parish of St. Andrew is known for its dramatic landscapes and unusual rock formations. The early Scottish settlers thought that the area was much like their native Scotland and named the region the Scotland District. The view of the Scotland District from Cherry Tree Hill (turn left when exiting St. Nicholas Abbey) is definitely photo worthy.

Take a stroll through one of Barbados’ true tropical treasures. Located in the heart of the island, just 2 minutes from Harrison’s Cave, Welchman Hall Gully is a unique place, definitely well worth a visit. Formed centuries ago when the roofs of caves collapsed, it is now filled with an abundance of flourishing, exotic tropical plants and trees. In the peaceful hush of the forest, visitors can often see troops of Green Monkeys frolicking in the trees – monkeys’ feeding time is generally around 10:30am.

The Rugged East Coast The Ermy Bourne Highway hugs the east coast from Belleplaine at the northern end through to Cattlewash. In the area of Belleplaine, stop by Sand Dunes, a friendly, casual roadside bar and restaurant run by Curtis Hall – they serve ice cold drinks and the tastiest, fresh grilled fish with macaroni pie. Their flying fish cutter is also considered one of the best on the island. Further along the Ermy Bourne Highway is Cattlewash and its wild, Atlantic seascape, with the spectacular clay escarpment of Chalky Mount, rising up dramatically inland. The recently opened Chill ’n Breeze, right on the beach at Barclays Park, is a wonderful spot to stop for a rum punch and sample their locally inspired menu while enjoying the fresh sea breeze. The quaint, seaside village of Bathsheba is just over the next hill. In the middle of the bay is ‘Soup Bowl’, a favourite surf spot with top surfers from around the world! The view and the lunch at Round House are equally enjoyable! Another wonderful stop for lunch on the east coast is the historic Atlantis Hotel in Tent Bay. Having undergone an extensive and thoughtful renovation some years ago, Atlantis still retains its unique charm and famous West Indian Buffet lunches on Wednesdays and Sundays (reservations strongly advised: 433 9445). In the hills just above Atlantis, you’ll find Andromeda Botanic Gardens, encompassing some 6 acres of tropical gardens with a profusion of exotic flowers, plants and trees collected from around the world. There is a magnificent specimen of a bearded fig tree, which apparently gave Barbados its name when the Portuguese stopped off in 1536 and named the island Los Barbados, meaning ‘the bearded ones’. From here it’s an easy drive over the hills to Martin’s Bay, a sleepy fishing village, home to the popular Bay Tavern restaurant which serves up a diverse selection of really tasty local fare. The rocky nature of the bay also makes it an ideal spot for local lobster fishermen. Set upon a splendid cliff above Martin’s Bay is St. John’s Parish Church with its fascinating graveyard and sweeping views of the east coast. Codrington College, with its long, impressive driveway, lined by soaring Royal Palms, is a 17th century theological college. Set in beautiful and peaceful grounds with old coral stone buildings and a small chapel, the complex stands on a cliff 360 ft above sea level with sweeping views of the coastline below. From here, take an amble over to Ragged Point, the most easterly point of the island, and stop by East Point Grill to sample some of award winning local Chef Michael Hinds’ mouth watering menu offerings!

The south coast is home to many of the island’s hotels, lovely beaches, the popular Oistins Fish Fry and St. Lawrence Gap with its outstanding restaurants and vibrant nightlife scene. With scores of world-class restaurants from coast to coast, Barbados runs the full gamut of choice when it comes to dining out. But, if you want to really immerse yourself in the Bajan culture, then hit the island’s streets and sample some of the weird and wonderful, sumptuous local fare that we Bajans love to eat! Along the highways and byways, you’ll see roadside vendors selling everything from coconut water, roasted nuts and ackees, to roast corn and barbequed pigtails. Bajans are passionate about pork – the ham and pork cutters sold in rum shops are irresistible. Our seasonings and condiments are equally special, and give Bajan dishes their unique flavour. Pudding and Souse, traditionally eaten on Saturdays, is an old island favourite. The pudding is made from grated, wellseasoned sweet potato which is stuffed into the cleaned pig’s intestines and then steamed. It’s served with the souse, made from pig’s “features” (head), “trotters” (feet) and flesh which are cooked and pickled with lime juice, onion, cucumber, hot and sweet peppers and parsley. Many people across the island make and sell pudding and souse every Saturday, and every Bajan has their favourite source. Of note, is a place in Lemon Arbor, St. John called the Village Bar, where throngs of Bajans go for their weekly “fix”!

Breadfruit is an island staple, a large, green, football-sized fruit, which grows on a tree. Similar to potato with a slightly more creamy texture and subtle difference in taste that makes it an appealing alternative. It is served lathered in a tomato and onion butter sauce or pickled in a fresh cucumber and lime souse. It can be mashed into a cou cou or fried into crisp, wafer thin chips. Flying fish is an essential part of the Bajan Experience, not only does it make up part of our national dish (flying fish and cou cou), but it has become a sort of culinary emblem of Barbados. In fact, there is an abundance of fish to be found on just about every local menu. The most popular are Barracuda, King Fish (Wahoo), Tuna and Mahi-Mahi which is often referred to locally as dolphin–definitely not to be confused with the “Flipper” variety (porpoise), all are delicious and usually served either grilled, blackened or pan fried and generously seasoned with our unique Bajan green seasoning. Lionfish is a relative newcomer to local menus and it’s absolutely delicious - be sure to sample it while you’re here! Weekend Fish Frys around the island attract people to flaming coal pots and sizzling grills; Oistins is the most popular, but in the tiny fishing village of Half Moon Fort in the north of the island, the lesser known Merton’s Place sits on a seaside cliff in an area known as Moontown – a real Bajan experience!

In June 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Distinguished by an outstanding degree of preservation, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison offer a rare and fascinating insight into our wealthy British colonial history. While signature properties at the very top of the market continued to sell even after the post-2008 economic slump, including several recent houses that have been listed or sold for figures in excess of US$50 million, general prices in Barbados have dropped by about 20%. This was mainly due to a significant decrease in interest from overseas buyers and an overstock of inventory, especially on the west coast where significant construction continued despite the lull in sales activity. In the opinion of most realtors, this 20% drop in prices was in effect a correction of the values. General consensus is that after a 5-year decline the market has now bottomed out and prices will not go any lower, with investors possibly benefitting from some of the best buying opportunities in years. Given that there is still a substantial amount of completed inventory available for sale, in addition to attractive pricing, it is fair to assume that there will be greater potential for appreciation as this existing stock continues to sell and diminish. Positive indicators for the property market in Barbados include a general increase in tourism arrivals and, more significantly, a big increase in bookings for villa rentals. Based on previous history, when the rental market booms like this it often gives a bump-start to property sales activity. And from an overall perspective, there have been definite signs of revived interest in the market. Barbados offers a diverse range of properties for sale, including the everpopular beachside apartments, individual houses, lifestyle themed resorts and country homes. For many reasons, this is an opportune time to buy.

Barbados is surrounded by miles of glorious, palm-fringed, white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear, turquoise waters. Here is a brief coast-by-coast guide to some of our favourite beaches. Check the Barbados in a Nutshell Road Map, included in this publication, for the symbols indicating Vehicular and Pedestrian Beach Access. A Few Words of Caution

• Remember, Barbados is only 13 degrees north of the equator so be sure to use a sunscreen with a high protection factor and reapply regularly. • When snorkeling, remember to take a brightly coloured buoy/float so that you are clearly visible to water craft – these are available from Hazell’s Water World (page 68). • Beware of the poisonous manchineel trees (usually marked with a red ring around the trunk) with their yellow-green ‘apples’ found along the west coast Manchineel beaches - the tree and its fruit cause severe blistering.

Small to medium waves, except Carlisle Bay and Sandy Beach lagoon which are both very calm. Good conditions for body surfing, surfing, wind and kitesurfing. Carlisle Bay: A stunning, long, wide crescent of powdery white sand stretching from Bridgetown to the Hilton Hotel. A great beach to watch the sunset. Home to the Carlisle Bay Marine Reserve, a haven for snorkelers and beginner scuba divers, with six amazing shipwrecks and an abundance of marine life. A variety of watersports and turtle tours are available, as well as the new and hugely popular hydro flight jet packs from Jetblade (call Devon at 236 7680). Umbrellas and sun loungers for rent at Lobster Alive and Harbour Lights along with drinks and food. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sit with your toes in the sand and devour a freshly cooked lobster! Accra Beach (Rockley Beach): Very popular â&#x20AC;&#x201C; lots of activity, food stalls, parking, beach chair, umbrella & boogie board rentals. Pick up a tasty Bajan lunch at Chicken George. Good for body surfing and body watching! The western end is notorious for dangerous currents. Hastings: There are some lovely, shallow swimming areas along

the Hastings Boardwalk, perfect for cooling off after a jog. Grab a bite to eat at Salt Café, Blakey’s or Tapas. Sandy Beach & Carib Beach: Picturesque lagoon with calm, shallow water. Ideal for families with young children. Beach chairs, umbrellas and towels for rent from “Spock”. Dover Beach: Long, wide stretch of beach with shady areas. Breezy, with some swells. Beach chair and umbrella rentals. The Garden Terrace at Southern Palms Hotel is a good choice for lunch and drinks. Nearby, Irie Foods (in 2nd Ave. Dover) is a popular, reasonably priced eatery serving finger licking jerk chicken and pork. Enterprise Beach: Just south of Oistins and known locally as Miami Beach. Magical beach with lots of shade and picnic tables. Surfers Café in Oistins is a trendy little spot serving lunch and dinner. Silver Sands & Inch Marlow: World-class beach for windsurfing, and kitesurfing. DeAction Beach Shop at Silver Sands offers equipment and lessons. Boosy’s Surf School does surfing lessons for beginners and surfing tours (contact Christian 267 3182). Nearby, Mahmood Patel’s seaside Mamu’s Café serves delicious farm to table cuisine with produce from his Coco Hill Forest.

“Great seaside spot for a drink or a casual meal in Speightstown.” This popular little deck bar on the sea and sand of Speightstown is famous for their shark wraps and burgers but the chicken rotis, sandwiches, fish cakes and salads are delicious. They’re also well known for their souse on Saturdays and the weekly local specials. The live entertainment on Wednesdays and Fridays is rocking but it’s a perfect place for lunch, sundowners or just a casual drink anytime.

Calm, clear water, good swimming and snorkeling – lots of watersports. The earlier you get to there, the better– the west is best in the mornings while there’s still some shade on the beaches. If you need masks and fins for snorkeling, visit Hazell’s Water World in Carlisle Bay (see page 68). Speightstown Area: In the north, between Half Moon Fort and Speightstown, there are a number of quiet beaches with excellent conditions for swimming, snorkeling and paddle boarding. There are quite a few very good restaurants and great little eateries in and around Speightstown, some to look out for include: The Orange Street Grocer, Juma’s, The Lobster Pot, Nino’s, The Beach Shack, The Top Deck and Little Bristol. Between Port St. Charles and Almond Beach Resort there is a public access road leading to a parking area and a glorious stretch of beach in front of the marina. The Port St. Charles Yacht Club is idyllic for lunch. Mullins Bay: Mullins Beach Bar is now a private ‘members only’ club associated with Royal Westmoreland. On either side are chair/umbrella rentals and drinks available with toys in the sea for clambering about on and constant availability of watersports operators. Bombas, just north of Mullins, is a wonderfully laid back beach bar serving tasty food and cold drinks.

Gibbes Beach: A sweeping, sandy stretch of beach with lots of large shady trees and some of the most desirable villas on the island. No facilities. Alleyne’s Bay: Lovely stretch of beach with clear water (and sometimes turtles); beach chair rentals. Reeds Bay: A long, wide arc of golden sand, with great swimming conditions. It’s usually quiet except for visiting catamarans. Halfway along is the new Coconut Palms West serving cold drinks and food with chairs for rent. The owner, Judall, also offers sunset suppers. Folkestone Marine Reserve: Large marine reserve with good snorkeling conditions–equipment available for rent at the visitors centre. For Glass Bottom Boat Tours call Max or Michael at Team Baywatch Watersports (249 5115 or 232 8157). Holetown: Zaccios Beach Bar & Restaurant is right on the beach serving food and drinks all day with beach chair and umbrella rentals. Paynes Bay: Long stretch of beach, a favourite with families and cruise ship passengers. Good for long strolls, swimming and snorkeling – you may even spot some turtles! The public access path next to One Sandy Lane, is the closest access to the splendid Sandy Lane Beach which also has excellent swimming conditions. Batts Rock: Quiet beach with good snorkeling conditions and facilities.

Big waves, some strong currents – be sure to keep within your depth. Crane Beach: One of the world’s most glorious beaches. The public access at the eastern end is not suitable for the physically challenged. Great for boogie boarding. Chair, umbrella and board rentals. Drinks sold on the beach. Lunch at L’Azure at The Crane Resort. Cutters of Barbados, located nearby, serve delicious food. They will deliver lunch to the beach, including their famous cutters and rum punch! Foul Bay: A spectacular stretch of beach with easy parking and shady areas for picnics. Exercise extreme caution when swimming as there are strong currents. For security reasons, use the northern end where the NCC wardens are present. Bottom Bay: Beautiful, often deserted bay. Park on the clifftop and go down the steps – beach chairs available for rent. Watch out for undercurrents. Just beyond Bottom Bay is the East Point lighthouse which has been beautifully restored and is worth a visit just for the view. East Point Grill is a cool, spacious ‘liming spot’ to sit and enjoy a cold drink and some tasty local food their ribs are very popular.

CAUTION: The east coast has strong and very dangerous undercurrents – it is NOT SAFE FOR SWIMMING but has some spectacular photo opps! Bath: Bath is the exception on the east coast with its own look and character. It is lovely for a calm dip with plenty of shade and scope for coastal walks. Facilities but no refreshments or chairs available. Bathsheba: Fresh ocean breezes and pounding surf. ‘Soup Bowl’ is a famous surf break with local and international surfers. Due to very strong currents, swimming here is restricted to shallow rock pools where you can take a dip at low tide. Exercise extreme caution. Round House and Atlantis Hotel are great choices for lunch. Cattlewash: Miles upon miles of untouched beach along the island’s most rugged stretch of coast. Swimming here is extremely dangerous! The new seaside Chill ‘N Breeze is a great new spot to book for lunch or just pop in for a drink and chill out. Little Bay: Quite close to North Point, this dramatically beautiful and very unique beach is a must see. Swimming is possible but keep to the edge and don’t swim if the sea is particularly rough. No facilities.

Eating out in Barbados

Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners, there are many that are fully booked in advance, especially between December and May, so reservations are highly recommended. Sunset varies between 5:30pm in December and 6:30pm in June. An early evening reservation, sipping cocktails while the sun goes down on either the south or west coast, is a wonderful idea. The quality of the restaurants in Barbados is superb, ranging from fine dining establishments to friendly beach bars and bistros, so visitors can enjoy a wonderful variety of dining options while on the island. Wherever you decide to dine, be sure to try the island’s fresh fish. A very good choice is Mahi Mahi or Dorado, referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fish is absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the beloved porpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other recommended catches include Flying Fish, Barracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish. Shrimp here are usually very large and very good. Most of the beef served is very high quality US Prime. Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars and include 17.5% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until it is requested. Bon Appétit!

It’s a great spot for whale watching between January and April, and day passes are now available to enjoy a day lounging by their 75ft cliff-top swimming pool.

Driving Tips in a Nutshell

• In Barbados we drive on the left. • Seat belts are compulsory. • The roundabout system of lanes: when taking the first left exit off the roundabout you should remain in the left lane; when proceeding straight, take either lane and filter at the exit, all other exits off the roundabout remain in the right lane. At roundabouts always give way to traffic approaching from the right. • The main ABC Highway runs from the Grantley Adams International Airport, parallel to the South Coast and then to the West Coast. • Highways 1-7 all start in Bridgetown and branch out across the island. • Highways A-Z are the smaller roads in between. • When you hear the honk of a horn it has a variety of meanings. It could be a warning, or a ‘hello’ to a passing friend or an ‘excuse me, I’m coming’. • When someone flashes their lights at you at a junction it usually means ‘proceed, I’m letting you go first’.

SAFETY Barbados is considered to be a safe place but always be as cautious as you would be at home. Exercise common sense when venturing into isolated locations; secure your valuables; never leave your belongings unattended on the beach or in full view in a locked car; always leave your key at front desk as lost keys mean insecurity. Barbados has never had a shark attack. The most common sharks are Nurse Sharks, which do not attack. There are no poisonous spiders or snakes but a centipede bite, though not poisonous, can be very painful. BE AWARE Barbados is close to the equator and the sun can cause severe damage to the skin, so be sure to use a good sun screen and sit under an umbrella. Before sitting under a coconut tree, check that there are no brown coconuts or drooping brown branches that are apt to fall. If you are stuck by the spines of the black sea urchins found on the reef, although painful, they are harmless and will eventually dissolve and be absorbed by the body. Only pull them out if they are clearly protruding.
