Barbados the caribbean’s most revisited destination... a charismatic island with a unique charm and warmth: with mile after mile of powdery, white sand beaches; a delightful year-round climate of sunshine and sea breezes; acres of verdant, rolling sugar cane fields; exotic botanical gardens; a rich and fascinating history; and some of the friendliest people in the world.

Andrew Hulsmeier

For an island measuring a mere 14 x 21 miles, Barbados offers visitors a tremendous variety of activities and days can be spent as busy, or as leisurely, as you choose. There is a refreshing mix that goes beyond the usual visitor criteria of ‘sun, sea and sand’ – scratch the

surface and discover a proud heritage and vibrant culture; a fascinating natural environment; and, above all, the special flair of the Bajan people, who are considered the warmest and friendliest in the Caribbean. No wonder Barbados is the Caribbean’s most revisited destination.

Sun, sea & sand Barbados is naturally blessed with a magnificent variety of sun-drenched, palm-fringed beaches; calm, crystal clear, turquoise water; and a year-round climate that’s as close to perfection as you can get.

Add to this the idyllic climate, with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, the constant North-east Trade Winds keeping daytime temperatures between 80–85 degrees Fahrenheit (27–29 degrees Celsius), and just enough rainfall to keep things green, and you have all the ingredients that make this magical isle the perfect holiday destination!

Surrounded by over 70 miles of glorious, powdery, white sand beaches – from secluded west coast coves lapped by the tranquil waters of the warm Caribbean Sea to the pounding surf of the island’s rugged Atlantic coastline, Barbados boasts some of the finest beaches in the Southern Caribbean!

Planning the wedding of your dreams, or the perfectly romantic honeymoon, can be as easy as saying ‘I do’. Barbados has a long tradition of hosting newlyweds and the island can provide all the necessary ingredients to ensure an intimate sojourn you’ll always remember with great pleasure. There is no shortage of wedding coordinators on the island, with select hotels providing an on-staff wedding

planner or service to assist with the details. Whether it’s a traditional ceremony in an old country church; a serene beach at sunset; or an intimate gathering on the deck of a yacht under a star-glittered sky... choices of romantic settings abound. Recent legislation has eliminated the advance notice requirements to marry on the island, allowing couples to marry as soon as a licence is obtained.

landlubbers alike will all find a bounty of choices from which to plan their day - spend a glorious day aboard a luxury catamaran, swimming with the turtles in the morning, snorkeling and beachcombing in the afternoon. History & heritage In Barbados many diverse components blend harmoniously to weave the richly textured fabric of everyday life on the island today. Stability and harmony reign among a diverse “melting pot” population of varied races, religions and creeds. Interestingly, Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visited outside the United States. Originally inhabited by Amerindians before being settled by the English in 1627, Barbados is the only Caribbean island which remained constantly under British rule until 1966 when she gained independence. It is no wonder the island is affectionately known as “Little England”. Over the course of the last four centuries, historical events and a potent mix of African, British and other influences have bequeathed a rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Barbados’ historic capital city, Bridgetown, which had its 382nd anniversary in 2010, and the historic Garrison area have been nominated for inscription on the World Heritage list. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Barbados was established as the nucleus of Trans-Atlantic trade and served as headquarters of both the British Royal Navy and Army. Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in the Commonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates its counterpart in London’s Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; and the 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be found anywhere in the entire western hemisphere.

Art & Craft The vibrant colours that are everywhere you look are used lavishly in Barbadian art. Perhaps you’ll find a unique treasure as a reminder of our “Island in the Sun”.

Andrew Hulsmeier

The island’s “gentler side” offers a cultural haven among the action-packed activities on offer. So steal away for a day and explore the outstanding galleries. Many of the galleries have interesting shows throughout the year so be sure to check the following website: http://corriescott.net/page26.htm to see the events that are on while you are here. Whilst some treasures are sought, others are chanced upon, so on your travels around Barbados be sure to visit some of our talented artists at their studios. They will be delighted to show you their work and you will have an interesting glimpse of Bajan life. There is a wide variety of beautiful local craftwork, much of it created out of the island’s most readily available natural resources such as clay, wood, pandanus grass,

palm leaves, bamboo, shells and leather. Pottery, batik, basket making, jewellery and wood carving are among the prominent local skills. The Pelican Craft Centre, near the Bridgetown Port, has the largest selection of local craft on the island and you can watch many of the craftspeople at work. The Earthworks complex in St. Thomas also presents an excellent variety of high quality craft. In addition to the many craft outlets on the island, there are several festivals held to celebrate aspects of the island’s culture where local artisans showcase their work. These include the Holetown Festival in February, the Oistins Fish Festival in April, Bridgetown Market during Crop Over in August and the Barbados Museum’s Christmas Craft Fair in early December.

Elegant dining & lively nightlife Barbados is highly recommended for its high standard of restaurants and its vibrant nightlife scene. France, the Mediterranean and Asia. Sampling is likely to include the island’s national dish of flying fish and cou cou, along with a remarkable range of other fresh fish caught daily off the island’s shores. It is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity of Barbados’ dining and its all encompassing, vibrant nightlife, provide visitors with a refreshingly broad range of choice. So, whether it’s a romantic dinner on a terrace overlooking the sea, or the lavish splendour of a dazzling dinner show, Barbados will rise to meet the highest of your expectations.

With over 100 restaurants from coast to coast, countless bars and nightclubs, Barbados runs the full gamut of choice when it comes to dining out and entertainment. The island truly offers something for everyone - from the sophisticated west and south coast establishments to the smaller, ‘no frills’ roadside joints the famous Fish Fry at Oistins, there is an impressive range of menus and venues to suit all tastes and budgets. Top class chefs prepare award-winning Caribbean fare with a melange of international influences from far away places like Africa, India,

Mixing business with pleasure Barbados has become known to business people from around the world as the conference capital of the Eastern Caribbean. Barbados has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the international business world for well over 300 years and today, with a top rating on the United Nations Human Development Index, the island enjoys a fine reputation for due diligence, good governance and strict adherence to corporate law. With the existence of attractive Tax Treaty Agreements between Barbados and a growing number of countries, along with a wide range of other incentives, many international companies have chosen to do business in or with Barbados. As a result of this development, Barbados now has a new generation of professionals and service providers who are accustomed to performing their duties to world standards on a daily basis. This is good news for any company that chooses to hold a conference or incentive vacation in Barbados. In addition to the other obvious benefits of excellent

airlift, a wide range of superb accommodation, world class restaurants, golf courses and other leisure facilities, function and event planning is offered by a number of capable Barbadian companies. They can assist in arranging any kind of special event, all supported by the high level of technology available within the island. Also, and very significantly, as Barbados is eligible to host conventions under the provisions of the Convention Tourism Tax Credit, American companies can hold meetings on the island and take applicable expenditures as tax write-offs, just as though the event were held in the USA. So, all in all, Barbados can truly be considered an ideal location to mix business with pleasure. Choose Barbados for your next meeting and make your employees and colleagues very happy. You never know, you might like it so much that you decide to stay.

Homes away from home in recent years Barbados has witnessed the development of a number of truly world class residential communites and sumptuous private villas.

Mike Toy/ Reproduced from the book Architecture & Design in Barbados

The advances within the property sector in Barbados over the course of the last twenty-five years have been quite monumental. The fledgling market of those earlier days, that quietly attracted the interest of a select few holiday home purchasers, has now blossomed into one of the most vibrant, rewarding and most sought after investment opportunities in the world. Without doubt, foreign investment in property, accommodation and tourism has played a major role in the country’s successful economic and social development. As we continue to move forward in the future, Barbados will be careful to preserve its natural environment and to protect the best interests of the country and its citizens, while still catering as best as we can to the market demands of our international friends and partners.

Know before you go a few island tips to help you enjoy your Barbados holiday. Dress Code:

Outfit yourself for the warm tropical climate. Shorts, T-Shirts, wraps and sundresses would be your best bet for daytime wear, while “elegantly casual” wear would suit the evenings. Bear in mind that swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when going shopping or dining out.

Telecommunications: Barbados has a modern telecommunications infrastructure with the latest in digital technology and fibre optics systems, including international direct dialing, facsimile transfer and satellite telecommunications which allow for the efficient transmission of electronic data. Internet and e-mail services, as well as express mail and courier delivery, are also available. The International direct distance dialing code for Barbados is (1246), followed by a seven digit local number.

Visitor Information: There are several very good publications offering useful information for visitors. Particularly worthy of mention are: the “Ins & Outs of Barbados”, a high quality visitor’s guide packed with fabulous photographs and articles of interest on all aspects of the island; and “Barbados in a Nutshell”, a comprehensive, user-friendly pocket guide with information on things to do and see, including a restaurant guide and road map. Many hotels have an Activities Co-ordinator or Concierge Desk where trips and activities can be arranged.

Children: Barbados

is an excellent family holiday destination with a wide range of activities and attractions that would be particularly enjoyed by the young. Dependable arrangements for child care can be easily organized through your hotel’s front desk.

Getting Around:

Driving in Barbados is on the left side of the road and the majority of vehicles are “right hand drive”. The island has an extensive road system of about 1,475 km of paved roads. A highway links the north and south of the island. There are a number of ways to get around the island - all are safe, reliable and convenient.

Local Buses:

There is a very good, inexpensive public transport system covering virtually the entire island.

16

Car Hire:

A full range of well maintained vehicles are available through reliable local car hire operators. Visitors must be over 25 years and have a valid driver’s licence in order to obtain a permit to drive in Barbados. The cost of a visitor’s permit is BDS$10.00 (US$5.00) and most car hire companies will issue these when the vehicle is delivered to your hotel or the airport.

Taxis: Taxis in Barbados are not metered. Fares are set between certain points. It is always advisable to agree on a price with the driver before setting off.

Newspapers: There are two daily local newspapers: The Advocate and The Nation. A vast range of daily foreign newspapers can be delivered daily by Newspapers Direct.

Taxes/Tipping:

15% VAT (Value Added Tax) is included in all prices in shops, supermarkets and restaurants. In hotels, 7.5% VAT and 10% service charge will be added to your bill. Usually 10% - 15% is acceptable when tipping - many restaurants automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill, so you would be wise to check before tipping additionally.

Weddings:

The general requirements are as follows: Valid passports, or original or certified copies of the applicants’ birth certificates. If either party is widowed, a certified copy of the marriage certificate and death certificate in respect of the deceased spouse will be required. If either party is divorced, an original Decree Absolute, (NOT the Decree Nisi.) is required. If the Decree Absolute is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a certified translation. A letter, or written indication, from the Marriage Officer, who has agreed to perform the marriage ceremony including the church to which he belongs is also required. Application for a marriage licence must be made by the bride and groom, in person, at the office of The Ministry of Home Affairs, 5th Floor, General Post Office Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown, St. Michael. If neither the bride nor groom is a citizen or resident of Barbados, the licence fee is BDS$200 cash and a $25 stamp, and $20 for the certificate. Return airline tickets must also be presented.

Know before you go a few island tips to help you enjoy your Barbados holiday. Size & Location:

Barbados is 166 square miles, divided into 11 parishes. The island is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands, with St. Vincent and St. Lucia being its closest neighbours.

Climate: With over 3000 hours of sunshine annually, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant north-east trade winds. The average daytime temperature ranges between 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit, 2729 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

Language:

English, although the Bajan dialect can be heard all around the island.

Capital: Bridgetown is the capital of the island and the main shopping centre. A convenient and inexpensive shuttle service operates between hotels and Bridgetown (bookings can be made through your hotel front desk).

Business Hours: Shops in Bridgetown are open Monday to Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm and 8:30am1:00pm on Saturdays. Malls and out-of-town shops and boutiques usually open from 9:00am-5:00pm (Mon-Fri) and 9:00am-2:00pm on Saturdays. Most shops are closed on Sundays, although some supermarkets and convenience stores remain open.

Time Difference:

4 hours behind GMT in the winter and 5 hours in the summer. 1 hour ahead of US Eastern Standard Time (EST) in the winter and the same during US Daylight Saving Time.

Population: Approximately 284,589. The ethnic mix consists of: 93% African descent, 3% European, 1% Indian and Asian and 3% mixed race. Average life expectancy is 77 years for both males and females.

40

Economy:

The economy is based on the following sectors: tourism, business, financial and general services, agriculture and manufacturing.

The Government: Settled in 1627 by the British, Barbados remained a British colony until its independence on November 30th, 1966. A member of the British Commonwealth, Barbados’ constitution is based on the British style of parliamentary democracy, with elections being held every five years. Barbados has two houses of Parliament; a Senate and a House of Assembly. The Governor General, who represents the British Monarch, is Head of State while executive authority is vested in the Prime Minister and Cabinet who are collectively responsible to Parliament.

Health Care:

Barbados is recognised as having the most modern medical facilities in the Eastern Caribbean. Medical services are provided by the two major hospitals, Queen Elizabeth and Bayview, and several well equipped clinics, health centres and nursing homes. In addition, FMH Emergency Medical Clinic in St. Michael and Sandy Crest in St. James are private accident and emergency medical centres.

Currency: The Barbados dollar is tied to the US dollar at a fixed rate of US$1.00 = BDS$1.98. The rate of exchange for sterling Canadian currency varies. US currency is readily accepted everywhere on the island, while most hotels, restaurants and large stores accept travellers cheques and most major credit cards as well.

Electricity:

115/230 volts 50 cycle. Many hotels provide converters for European or Asian appliances. North American appliances will not need converters.

Water: The water service in Barbados is reliable and the water supply is safe and refreshing to drink straight from the tap.
