The Great Summer Escape Guest editor's note

“There is nothing more precious than laughter” Frida Kahlo.

Our cover story which takes us to Tulum, was photographed by John Rowley, certainly a man who knows how to capture the spirit of Mexico perfectly with its rich culture and stupendous locations.

Travelling the world is Davina Catt; read her article about Orit Elhanati Jewellery, which is inspired by the Nordic minimalistic lines and the mysterious energy surrounding the Middle East.

Back in London, our world-renowned beauty expert Ruby Hammer presents her tips for the summer with the most sumptuous products.

If you want an insight into the art of wearing the fashion brand Borgo de Nor, esteemed writer Juliet Herd is in discussion with Carmen Borgonovo about surrealism and iconic female artists.

Fancy an urban take on summer? Fashion contributor Clare Lazaro is showcasing how to wear masculine with the feminine and still keep cool.

On a personal note, I was delighted to be asked to cocurate the Private view for HVH Arts which brings Art to disadvantagedchildrenbyitsfounderandCEODebbiClark. The exhibition was to honour its original Patron, Helen McCrory who I worked with for many years styling her for manyredcarpeteventsandphotoshoots.

Helen also became a friend and someone I could always rely on for advice and support, she was a wonderful human being and therefore this seemed like the perfect opportunity to contribute and honour what she believed in, which is that art should be available to all children, regardlessoftheirbackground.

The photographers that I had worked with throughout the years, very kindly donated several photos of Helen in aid of the charity. The Private view was a great success and was hosted by Damian Lewis and its founder and CEO Debbi Clark who also exhibited some of her own photos of Helen andDamianaswellasotheractors, suchasJudeLaw,Eddie Redmayne, Dame Harriet Walter, Sadie Frost and many others, allavailabletopurchaseinaidofHVHArts.

The first-ever "McCrory" award was given to the three top students, who had also exhibited works of art and so the workcontinuesandthememoryliveson.

THE ART OF WEARING BORGO DE NOR

INSPIRED

BY

SURREALISM AND ICONIC FEMALE ARTISTS, CO-

FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR CARMEN BORGONOVO DESIGNS BOLD, JOYFUL PRINTS FOR INDEPENDENT WOMEN

The way Carmen Borgonovo describes the prints on her Borgo de Nor dresses, she could be talking about a magical realism film or a piece of surrealist art. And, in a sense, that’s exactly what these bold designs evoke – they leap out at you, inviting you to lose yourself in their sheer vibrancy and romanticism.

“They are more than just a floral print,” says co-founder and creative director Borgonovo. “They are powerful, magical and surrealist.”

In the five years since she and fellow cofounder Joana de Noronha launched their eponymous London-based label, it has fast become the go-to niche brand for independent, stylish women unafraid to assert their individuality and express their creativity. “It takes strong, confident women to wear them,” confirms Borgonovo. “You have to have a sense of joy and a desire to wear colour. We want these dresses to make you feel emotional and passionate.”

For Borgonovo, who was born in El Salvador and grew up in Miami, Florida, her designs are a celebration of Latin American artists such as Frida Kahlo and British-Mexican Leonora Carrington, as well as 1920s free-spirits like American photojournalist Lee Miller and the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

''They lived at a time when women were meant to be at home and it was very difficult to be independent,” she says. “They were breaking barriers and creating incredible art.”

“I studied surrealist artists and started thinking, ‘Who would this woman be now?’ and realised there were so many women like that in our lives that we admire,” she explains. “We’re also constantly watching women on the street, how they combine colours and how they dress.

“Our inspiration starts in art, mixed in with nature, vintage fashion, photography and our general mood. A timeless print is something that needs to look unique. We want women to be able to keep them and treasure them forever, bringing them back season after season.”

While art and individualism are at the heart of each collection (there are now four per year), accessible pricing is also key. “We wanted to make dream dresses that were slightly more affordable,” says Borgonovo of the brand’s beautifully crafted pieces that work equally as well on holiday and at home.

Borgo de Nor’s launch in 2017 could not have been more timely. “Print and colour were beginning to come back into fashion – it was when Gucci started to be big again – and we launched at the right time with the right product at a certain price point and it went really well from the start,” says the designer.

Her introduction to de Noronha, who grew up in Portugal and now also lives in London, was equally fortuitous. A former fashion editor, Borgonovo had been working as a freelancer when she met her future business partner and commercial director, then the owner of fashion and sales consultancy company Barefoot Chic. De Noronho had approached her to design a line of beach and resort wear for her showroom but Carmen came up with another suggestion – to start their own label instead. “It was the perfect fit,” she says of their complementary skills.

For Borgonovo, it really was a dream come true. From a young age, she felt drawn to the world of art and design but knew she needed more experience before she was ready to venture into the design sphere herself. Born in El Salvador, she and her family left in 1976 due to growing political instability, culminating in the 1979 military coup and civil war.

Her father, who ran the family coffee farms, continued to travel back and forth from Miami, while his wife and children settled into the city’s close-knit Salvadorian community. “I grew up with two different cultures – I was able to maintain my Latin links while being exposed to American culture,” says Spanish-speaking Borgonovo. “When you are forced to leave your country, you stay very close to your roots and it made me proud of mine.”

Although keen to study fashion design after finishing high school, she was persuaded by her parents to go to university first. “They thought I was a bit too young at 17 but said if I still wanted to study fashion after I’d got an education, I could do it. That has been at the back of my mind since forever!”

“I grew up with two different cultures – I was able to maintain my Latin links while being exposed to American culture,”

After studying international relations and French literature at Boston College in Massachusetts, the young Carmen headed for New York, where she secured an internship at the now defunct women’s magazine Mirabella in New York before becoming an accessories assistant at Harper’s Bazaar under the editorship of Liz Tilberis. “Liz was the kindest woman in the world and an incredible editor. When I look back, it was my dream job,” recalls Borgonovo, who went on to work as an accessories and fashion editor at W Magazine, Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily.

In 2004, she moved to Milan, where she found herself on the other side of the design process for the first time as creative director at luxury brand Hogan. “It was an incredible experience and learning curve,” she says. “I saw everything that it takes to make a successful brand.”

But Borgonovo still felt she needed to learn more about the industry before she was ready to go it alone. In 2006 she moved to London with her Italian private equity banker husband, who she met while living in Milan, and returned to the magazine world, working as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar for four years before joining former luxury online fashion retailer, My-Wardrobe.com. “I wanted to learn about the e-commerce side and it was fascinating on a business level, understanding how collections are bought and why,” she says. “It was almost like I was training to launch our brand; it was always at the back of my mind. When we finally launched, everything made sense.”

Now, Borgo de Nor is sold in Harvey Nichols, MatchesFashion.com, Selfridges and Browns Fashion in the UK and in Neiman Marcus in the US.

Since the pandemic, Borgonovo has embraced her love of colour with renewed zest. “I found a new sense of joy in wanting to be colourful and expressive,” she says, revealing that the autumn collection is focused on travel while party dresses in red and black velvet will form the core of the winter edit.

She has been pleasantly surprised by how open British women have been to wearing colour and is impressed by their adventurousness and willingness to “take risks”. She describes herself as a “style chameleon”, switching between bright colours and neutrals such as khaki, navy and grey. Both she and de Noronha wear their dresses in all seasons and for all occasions, layering them with sweaters in the colder months and teaming with trainers for a more casual look.

“I like to feel comfortable in my clothing because, for me, the woman who feels good is super elegant,” says this busy working mother of two young boys, whose wardrobe includes pieces by Balenciaga (under Nicolas Ghesquière), Celine (under Phoebe Philo), Oscar de la Renta, Christian Dior and Azzedine Alaia.

She and de Noronha, also a mum, are supporters of flexible working hours for their staff and believe in empowering other women to help them stay in the workforce. To this end, they have collaborated with the charity SmartWorks, which provides clothing and coaching for unemployed women looking to re-enter the job market, creating a muse collection using leftover fabric with 10% of sales going to the organisation.

Another ongoing initiative is Borgo de Nor’s partnership with the charity Glasswing El Salvador, which works in schools, health clinics and public hospitals across the country - one of the most dangerous in Latin America - to deliver education and healthcare programmes. It’s a cause particularly close to Borgonovo’s heart as the funds raised through the sale of specially designed t-shirts go to support girls at the school her brother runs on one of the family’s coffee farms, outside the capital, San Salvador.

“El Salvador has one of the highest crime rates against women,” says the designer. “It’s about helping girls to stay in school because a lot of them are taken out of education and kept at home so they can help with household chores. There is also a girls’ club within the school that teaches them about sexual health and gives them a safe place if they need it.”

On the design front, the first Borgo de Nor swim and beachwear range is due to launch later this month in collaboration with sustainable swimwear brand Talia Collins, and a costume jewellery collection is also in the works.

“We get a thrill every time we see someone wearing Borgo de Nor,” sums up Borgonovo. “It’s about being your own muse and finding your own power – what we want to do is create a sisterhood of women, who respect and inspire each other. This gives us so much strength.”

Elhanati

My jewellery inspiration is about mixing two completely different cultures into one pot, just like me as a person. There is so much peace and acceptance in this thought,’ muses Orit Elhanati of her eponymous jewellery line, Elhanati.

Founded in 2017, Elhanati fine jewellery collections embrace the duality of the founder and creative director’s upbringing, straddling influences from her life in Copenhagen to parents of Greek, Israeli, and Danish descent. In a saturated landscape, Elhanati’s one-of-akind jewellery – all made from recycled 18K solid gold – with each piece imagined and created in the atelier through hammering, burning and dripping techniques are both distinctive and disconcertingly beautiful, akin to wearing mini pieces of art.

Having formally trained as a goldsmith, Orit Elhanati slowly acquainted herself with the material and how she could tell her story through the gold, ‘I believe like all things in life, you can make a space for yourself if you are telling your own honest story,’ and so her first jewel (still available now) the Palma tag was created.

Evoking childhood memories of her mother and cousins in Israel wearing a tag every day, Orit Elhanati found her dreams returning to her grandmother on the steps of her Tel Aviv home dripping in gold, as well as the mysteries and tales of Jerusalem, the paths to the Dead Sea and the mountain textures and desert lines of their surroundings.

“IONLYWORKWITH18KGOLD.I

Elhanati is not only ‘heirloom’ jewellery inspired by past generations but also textural jewellery that becomes part of the woman wearing it and her story. The Palma tag (part of the Roxy collection) conjures the notion of childhood memories and the hallucinatory power of the desert as an environment and uses the ‘bubbling’ gold texture to reflect this – Orit Elhanati designed her first Palma tag and wore it around for a month to decipher whether this could become a long-lasting jewel. She continues to take this approach for all her collections today.

As the fine jewellery landscape continues to grow and people are becoming more reflective in their choices, looking for a relatively scarce design aesthetic, Elhanati, all handcrafted in Copenhagen, is garnering widespread acclaim (including winning Best Danish Jewellery designer at the Elle Awards) and a loyal following for the sculptural creations.

Collections include Small Worlds, Paloma, Roxy and Solitaire, which Orit Elhanati confides she has so far found the most difficult to create, ‘not technically but emotionally because it is the most commercially viable of the collections’ – diamonds, opal, sapphires, rubies and emeralds and vermeil are all fair mined stones worked into the 18K recycled gold. Furthermore, Orit Elhanati understands the ever-evolving, cross-collaborative landscape: she has launched a Bambini Kids collection, will shortly introduce a Men's range, and she recently partnered with much-celebrated New York based, luxury fashion designer Khaite on a limited edition collection of brooches, jewellery and brooches. And whilst she admits to still ‘getting her head around what the Metaverse is’, she sees its positives in working towards sustainable, transparent business models.

However, for now, there are plenty more designs to be excited about, and a new Elhanati HQ is soon opening, as Orit Elhanati has found her ‘peaceful’ spot between multicultures in these mini wearable art pieces that crackle with truth and beauty.

Red Carpet Collection ‘Chopard Loves Cinema’

Caroline Scheufele unveils the first jewel in an Haute Joaillerie collection freely inspired by movie masterpieces

A rose embellishing a luminous costume. This fragile, sensual, dreamlike rose evokes the one Charlie Chaplin wore on his lapel in City Lights, one of his greatest masterpieces. It is also the black and white diamond-studded bloom chosen by Caroline Scheufele to open the ball of the 2022 Red Carpet Collection. A brooch graced with mobile petals as a tribute to a filmmaking ‘monument’. Two roses united by the same spirit of emotion and eternal beauty celebrated by the enduring love story between Chopard and cinema. Chopard Loves Cinema is much more than a formula: it is the theme chosen by Caroline Scheufele to mark her activities at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and which will also be Chopard's 25th participation as an official partner. On this occasion, Caroline Scheufele has drawn on the imaginative abundance of her own repertoire in designing a masterly collection of 75 Haute Joaillerie creations : an epic saga inspired by the grand adventure of cinema from its early black and white charms to its dizzying colours. The very first model presented as a preview captures the watershed moment when contemporary cinema was born and began to blossom.

A whole world nestled in a flower. A goldsmith's sculpture, graced with articulated diamond petals dancing like a Calder mobile, glorifies the rose given to Charlie Chaplin in City Lights and enshrining all the delicacy and power of the film. Ahead of the full Red Carpet Collection to be staged at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, Caroline Scheufele unveils this first emblematic creation: the gift of a little flower girl madly loved by Chaplin at the height of his art and playing a tramp who became an iconic figure both in cinema and in popular culture. A reinvented rose featuring white diamond petals, blooming at the tip of a stem bearing black diamond leaves, a chromatic tribute to the dense, photogenic black and white images of Chaplin's films.

Unstinting elegance

Brooches have become a token of singular elegance favoured by both men and women and this model adds a perfect signature touch enhancing the allure of the wearer. City Lights was Chaplin's first sound film – dubbed a ‘talkie’ but still featuring subtitles for the dialogue – and embodies a pivotal moment in the history of cinema. As such, it represents a magnificent metaphor for this 2022 Red Carpet Collection. Caroline Scheufele's absolute passion for Chaplin's genius testifies to the raw emotion and taste for brilliant performance with which she nurtures her own designs.

Boundless inspiration from films to jewels

Caroline Scheufele's gourmet and eclectic tastes drive her prolific inventiveness and her dazzling ability to arouse jewellery emotions. Much like a film director, this keen lover of the seventh art has dreamed up a jewellery collection freely inspired by her favourite movies that have had a lasting impact on her, whether by the worlds they portray or certain legendary scenes that have inducted these masterpieces into cinema’s hall of fame.

How

With the help of our founder, Sara Palmer Hussey PhD, multi-award-winning supplement expert, we have come up with a few tips to help you navigate through the marketing claims of supplement companies and know the difference between truth and elaboration when choosing vitamins and supplements.

Believe it or not the supplement sector is heavily regulated.

The claims that supplement companies can make are limited in Europe to the EU Register. This register lists all the claims that can be made for each vitamin or mineral included in a supplement. However, we have found that many of the shiniest, most expensive supplements do not adhere to this restricted list.

Let's take a look at some of the most misleading claims that can fool the most knowledgeable customer...

Patented ingredients

Natural ingredients cannot ordinarily be patented, although the U.S. occasionally awards some patents to natural ingredients based on a unique delivery system provided by a chemical coating or process. Patents ordinarily cover new chemical compounds found in pharmaceuticals.

Ingredients in supplements can, however, be trademarked and many raw material suppliers trademark their ingredients in order to be the sole supplier to a brand. Once the trademarked name of the ingredient appears on a brand's label, it must use that version of the ingredient and cannot switch to a different supplier.

Therefore, trademarked ingredients are not the result of a brand's own intellectual property, but instead belong to ingredient suppliers and are freely available for all supplement companies to use. If you tap in the trademarked ingredient being touted by a brand as some exclusive discovery in your search engine, you will find that many different brands will also be using it in their formulations too.

We asked Sara why she does not favour trademarked ingredients...

"There is no guarantee that a particular trademarked version of an ingredient is any better than a well-sourced and tested generic form. Most trademarked ingredients back up efficacy using the clinical research data on the generic ingredient and not their specific trademarked version, so it can be misleading for companies to cite clinical studies that are not specific to the trademarked ingredient or the efficacy of the supplement as a whole."

"Some trademarked ingredients claim to have better bioavailability or a higher concentration because of some chemical process the ingredient has undergone or some chemical delivery system. I prefer to ensure bioavailability via the formulation itself as a whole rather than by some microencapsulation process or chemical coating, for example, which implies added chemicals or chemical residues in the product. I choose pure, natural ingredients over chemicallyprocessed ingredients every time."

Peer-reviewed Ingredients

We have seen a lot of the most expensive supplementcompaniesusingthiswordingto persuade us that their choice of ingredients issomehowsuperior.Let'sbreakitdown.All ingredients permitted for inclusion in a supplement have been scientifically studied. Therefore, you can find clinical research on all ingredients. If these papers have been published in scientific journals, then they have been reviewed by scientific peers beforepublication,ietheyarepeer-reviewed.

So, let's ask Sara: Is the use of the term "peer-reviewed ingredients" by some supplementcompaniesmisleading?

"Ithinktheterm"peer-reviewedingredients" as a differentiating factor is an example of marketing speak intended to make the product sound special when it is not. All nutrients used in supplements are peerreviewed, soifanybrandisleadingwithsuch astatement, itisquestionable.Youcangoto PubMed and type in any ingredient used in supplements and you will find hundreds if not thousands of peer-reviewed studies for each. Type in turmeric, for example, and there will be over 600 clinical studies on its variousproperties.Typeinavitamin, suchas vitamin B12, and there will be thousands of peer-reviewedstudiesonitsbenefits."

"The ingredients are very important, their qualityandpurity, buttheformulationiseven more important to efficacy, that is the combination of ingredients, how it is calibrated and how each ingredient works in harmonywiththewhole."

Probiotics

Are probiotics really the best thing for gut health. Our founder, Sara Palmer Hussey PhD,thinksnot:

"I wholeheartedly favour other ways to improve gut health, such as eating more fibre, in particular prebiotics that feed your particular microbiome, as well as giving your gut sufficient rest every day to repopulate andrebalance.

Probiotics should not ordinarily survive your stomach acid and even make it to your gut. Instead of stepping in with an influx of one type of bacteria that could cause an imbalance, itisbettertosupportthebodyin creatingitsownparticularmicrobiomethatis tailoredtoyouandyourparticulardietusing the methods above (prebiotics and an overnight fast), plus exercise and stress management."

Supplement Pricing

When you buy a supplement, what are you payingfor?Anexpensivebrandwillinsistthat you are paying for higher quality, but is that reallythecase?

When we asked Sara whether any supplement should cost over £100, we got a resoundingno.

"If a single supplement costs that much, and the same goes for skincare, then the huge bulk of what you are paying for is not the supplement or skincare product itself. You will be paying for packaging, slick marketing and advertising campaigns and a big corporate structure with giant salaries. I know that FIREBIRD® products, for example, are vastly superior to other products on the marketthatcostthreetofivetimesasmuch. Wegoaboveandbeyondintermsoftesting, qualityandformulation, butitwasimportant tometomaketheseproductsaffordablefor everyone and not just a small elite. I hope our customers appreciate that the investment has gone into the product rather than the packagingandmarketing."

These are the ingredients that supplement companiesdonottalkabout.

They include flow agents, coatings, fillers, bindingagents,anti-cakingagents,colourings and preservatives. Most of these added ingredients are fairly innocuous, but at FIREBIRD® we prefer to avoid them; we purposefully decided to include only active ingredients with nutritional value in our formulations and none of these added chemicals.

The bright scent of green apple and cassis leads to a heart of smoky black tea and rich, mysterious birch. The unexpected earthiness of vetiver root and the woody, powdery scent of patchouli create a soft and lasting finish. Botanist is a green and earthy scent that captures the raw and powerful journey from seed to plant.

“To me, Botanist evokes two strong memories. One of a vast wild forest and one of cultivating plants in our old greenhouse. The raw scent of roots and soil that lingers on the hands after hours of digging and sowing. We have developed a scent that captures the earthy and smoky vetiver root, one of my favourite notes. The combination with the green and refreshing notes of birch and apple makes the scent vivid and powerful.”

Intensely coloured, hand blown glasses and bowls nestle next to silver diver’s helmet cocktail shakers and umbrella highball straws. Our fabulously louche range of barware adds so much style to a quiet sundowner.
