ALICE TEMPERLEY By Fashion Director Marcella Martinelli

Alice portrait: Tomo Brejc

Alice Temperley MBE founded her eponymous label, Temperley London in 2000, a year after graduating from the Royal College of Art. Alice continues to head up the creative direction of this British, independent brand as it enters its eighteenth year of business.

Temperley London is epitomised by modern bohemianism with a confident, feminine and effortless attitude while staying true to its British Heritage. Alice pioneers artisan techniques and intricate hand-worked embellishment; an aesthetic synonymous with her creative style. The core business focuses on women’s ready-to-wear collections, which have evolved to offer a comprehensive range of daywear, cocktail and eveningwear. Temperley Bridal, which launched in 2006 with two collections a year, is defined by ethereal, timeless silhouettes and is inspired by the romance and decadence of a bygone era. Temperley Bridal offers made-toorder, bespoke and ready-to-wear styles. The brand currently operates five standalone stores, including its flagship store on Bruton Street in Mayfair, an exclusive bridal boutique in Colville Mews in Notting Hill as well as stores in Dubai and Qatar. Temperley London is distributed in over 30 countries across upwards of 150 wholesale accounts including Lane Crawford, Saks 5th Avenue, Selfridges, Le Bon Marche, Matches.com, Net-a-Porter.com and Moda Operandi. Temperley Bridal is distributed in over 11 countries across upwards of 40 wholesale accounts including Novarese, Kleinfeld and Nordstrom. Temperley London muses include Amber Heard, Arizona Muse, Olga Kurylenko, Kate Hudson, Laura Bailey and Florence Welch. 2012 saw the launch of Somerset by Alice Temperley, a collaboration with John Lewis, the iconic British department store. Somerset by Alice Temperley is the fastest-selling collection in John Lewis’ history. In 2018, Temperley London was awarded the Butterfly Mark by Positive Luxury for a commitment to responsible practices across innovation, social good, environment, philanthropy, and governance. Alice is a member of the British Fashion Council Advisory Board and enjoys speaking at key industry events. She is also involved with several charitable organisations, including recently becoming Ambassador for Women for Women International. Photography was a natural progression into Claire’s life and she has inherited the artistic flair for tones and composition from her family who were all creative, from a very young age she saw her dad and uncle taking pictures and they seemed to always have a camera hanging around their neck, her mum was a keen artist too, doing pastel drawings and oil paintings. Falling in love with photography at art school was easy and she originally wanted to become a music photographer and follow the world of rock n’ roll but after assisting on several beauty and fashion shoots her direction changed and Claire found her niche specialising in beauty, fashion and jewellery. MilliOnAir | Interview

Martyn Roberts The Fashion Scout

By Fashion Contributor Ross Pollard

I

t’s a sunny morning at Freemasons Hall and I’m awaiting the arrival of Martyn Roberts the founder of Fashion Scout. I can see him in the room, but on his way over to talk with me he’s taken time to make sure the graduates involved in today's presentation are ok, making sure they have everything they need. Alongside Fashion Scout he’s also for the last seven years been running Graduate Fashion Week and today some of the emerging stars in the industry are showing their collections to the London Fashion Week Press.

Over the years such current global stars as Peter Pilotto, Phoebe English, Eudon Choi, Fydor Golan have started their careers showing with him, each season sees some of the freshest talent in the industry come to Covent Garden and be part of Fashion Week. It’s the place where I first saw some of the designers I adore such as Apu Jan and I-Am-Chen. Over the next thirty minutes we’ll cover so much, but at every turn his passion for developing and supporting designers whether graduates or with their young label's bursts out, and how important it is for him to provide them a space to grow and develop. He has a very simple way of expressing what he and his team do . . .

“At Fashion Scout we nurture, we look after and we take designers forward”.

MilliOnAir

47

Lunyee

Malan Breton

But he is keen to acknowledge it’s not just him, “I’m very proud of my team and that we can pull together something that is so fascinating and so interesting”. The event certainly provides a unique opportunity to those starting out and developing their ideas and designs. With over 200 applicants for the show & presentation slots every year he and his team are kept incredibly busy trying to look at all the possible labels to include and make them comfortable taking that first step towards becoming part of the schedule. “We scout and we keep an eye out encouraging designers to apply to us. If we take a designer like Phoebe English, she was very shy about doing her own show, but I knew and I liked what she did so we had numerous conversations & I encouraged her to do Ones To Watch and it grew from there”. I ask him how it feels to help designers and watch them move onto their own paths, is it sad that after a few seasons they move on to their own shows? “We call it the Fashion Scout Family & we can’t show everyone all the time, there is so much new talent coming through and in different ways. It’s always sad to see people go, actually

I’m not, I’m just so proud to see people go on and do things, and whether it’s with us or someone else I’m really proud to see designers that are achieving what they want”. Alongside this, at a time when there are questions raised about the validity of Fashion Week in a new world of social media, e-commerce and digital technology that is creating so much change he remains an advocate of why designers should pick London, “The same theory applies with Fashion Scout as it does with Graduate Fashion Week, coming to London to show works. As much as Instagram is interesting it can’t replace seeing clothing up close and live. That’s not to say he isn’t embracing social media, in fact from his perspective it’s a valuable tool to look at prospective designers and help them build their labels as part of the work Fashion Scout does. It’s worth noting that while we sat chatting, down below us mentoring sessions were taking place with key industry figures to help those that have shown at both of his events keep developing and moving forward.

But back to the role of social media, and he very astutely links the changing industry to the changing society we have, “we’re sitting here today with the Graduate Showcase and these guys have grown up with social media, Instagram even five years ago wasn’t anywhere near where it is now. They’re very used to communicating and reaching out to the audience who can discover them, designers are used to expressing themselves in a visual way, they can show things and explain. The graduates here today can reach out to their potential audience, who can then follow them where as before they could see them show and you’d go they were really amazing, what happened to them, you had no way to keep track of them”.

Fashion Scout

Perhaps nothing encapsulates this more than the biggest change he sees between designers and the audience, “now it’s what is their Instagram instead of can I have your business card”? The industry has certainly changed, and we discuss the last show the night before, a fave of mine Malan Breton, and how the audience had reacted with cheering and giving a standing ovation, how that’s become rare, “back then people clapped at the end of shows because you didn’t have phones and now you get shows where people are so blown away that at the end when the models come out it goes quiet because everyone is filming the collection, then as the models head backstage the applause erupts”.

everything instantly accessible. In this ever changing landscape that is perhaps why I love Fashion Scout & Graduate Fashion Week so much, it’s been such a part of my fashion life, every season we as fashion journalists and editors get to bring you the future first. Long may that, and Martyn's events continue.

But perhaps the biggest change has been the way the public have increasingly engaged with fashion week. It’s gone from trade show to everyone having ways to interact with it, it’s no longer the world of a few people who might tell you some things in a magazine, Martyn wholeheartedly agrees, “I remember when Fashion Week was at the Natural History Museum, if you walked out onto the street and said to a person do you know whats going on in there?'' 99.9% of people would have said no, never heard of it. It’s broken through to the public's awareness. It’s not so closed off; social media makes MilliOnAir

Wesley-Harriott You Can (Not) Be Everything By Fashion Contributor Ross Pollard

“When I’m putting together a look or a vibe it’s important to try and address as many women as possible. As much as I’m monochrome in my thinking and quite pale I very much like to make sure women are represented in different ways. Colour for me represents different kinds of people.” I’m standing in the bunker like space of the BFC, buried in the ground off The Strand, the walls are adorned with slogans from the fun to the serious, and I’m with Ricky Wesley-Harriot who has just perfectly summed up his design philosophy. The designer has had a spectacular lead up to his first live presentation having previously dressed Lady Gaga & Kylie Jenner amongst a sea of stars now calling on him for looks.

console era. If Bowie had been in Streetfighter or Mortal Combat, he’d of walked to the ring in one of these coats.

When I ask him if the ethos of his garments is a reflection of his North London background after gently teasing him that my native South London is better, the Tottenham born designer shows that he has a true appreciation of those that helped influence and shape him and how that’s mixed with the passions he developed along the way.

“Where I’m from is incredibly influential, I grew up on an estate surrounded by incredibly tough women who kind of did everything. My exposure to women has always been a certain kind of power and resilience and that’s the backbone of my brand. I’m a big anime and comic book geek so I reference a lot of Japanese super heroes and art in It’s with good reason, despite his gentle soft manner and my work as well, my brand is very much based on where his infectious enthusiasm there is a designer that has developed an absolutely resonant voice that’s reflective of I’m from and what I’m interested in and trying to mould that”. his personal beliefs, in an age where opinions can seem tacked on, it’s clear that Wesley-Harriot operates from a space he’s considered and truly believes in, that credibility This was the first time I’d seen a collection by him, and I’ll simply say this, I’m an absolute convert. and honesty juxtaposed against the flow of fashion week is incredibly refreshing. “Women are incredibly dynamic and I think it’s ignorant of me as a designer who is trying to dress women to believe all women are going to look one way, so the idea of contradiction is always going to be consistent in my brand, cute against masculine, masculine against sexy, it’s addressing the difference of what women represent as individuals”. Each of his looks feels like a collection, but as with all skilled designers dives off into its own avenue, we see the monochrome spine of the set mixed with different silhouettes and forms, the odd splash of colour and a mix between fits, from the loose to the sculpted. I also noted that in the outerwear there is a touch of androgyny that almost feels like Ziggy has been updated in the 90’s MilliOnAir

Lalita

Luxury Accessories by Felicities PR

Rena from Lalita

fashion images from magazines and put them on my wall never imaging that I’d end up designing one day. Ironically a few of the celebrities I cut out have actually ended up wearing Lalita - the pictures went from inspirational to actual photos of them in my line. I’m a big believer in dream boards and meditation to keep the creativity flowing because I never know when and where the inspiration will come from. The most ironic one was model Kate Upton from an old Guess Ad I have framed. She wore my pieces in a film that William H. Macy directed and only afterwards did I look at the Guess Ad one day and realize Kate Upton had been on my wall the whole time!

What motivated you to start your brand? Truthfully when I started out I had no idea the path I would be forging ahead and certainly no idea I was cultivating a brand. I have always been an entrepreneur but my boutique tutoring company was not fulfilling my need to express my creativity. When my father died in 2012 it was a wake up call for how short life is and I knew I had to pursue my own passions if I was going to be able to tell my students, with any integrity, to pursue their own dreams. My initial plan was packaging - I thought I only wanted to make a box with a garter clip closure. I kept envisioning this black box and knew it had to be created, so I asked my mom if she happened to have any of my grandmother’s garter clips and much to my surprise she had kept some. I took two clips and went about designing my first piece of packaging, which after going into production, eventually received a design patent. From there, I then wanted to make things to go into that box and when I stumbled upon a leather store with lots of amazing findings, I felt like a kid in a candy store. My imagination went wild and from there bracelets and my first garter tank arose and my imagination and designs continued to evolve from that space into Lalita. How do you draw inspiration for your pieces? For me the inspiration comes from finding new materials to play with. Initially it was the garter clip and discovering ways to creatively use them beyond their original function. I enjoy putting together components in non-traditional ways to create unique pieces with distinctive hardware; I look outside the box for every detail that I can. Since I was a pre-teen I collected

Who is the Lalita woman? The Lalita woman is secure in her skin, appreciates quality and detail, and can feel beautiful with or without make-up or accessories because she understands that beauty radiates from inside. There is a seductive elegance and timelessness about her that is both mysterious and alluring. First and foremost, she wears Lalita to please herself and not any partner, it can be her little secret or her bold statement to the world - how she wears Lalita is her choice and most definitely on her terms. How do you want women to feel when wearing your pieces? Lalita is meant to be an experience and I curate each piece from fabrics and hardware that allows for a bit of play or transformation while feeling incredible to touch. I’ve often spoken on how Lalita accessories can be your little secret when you wear it - that’s not to say the piece is hidden, but it is to say that the pieces are often tokens of remembrance for whatever is special for you. Whether that is having a tassel brush up against you to ignite your senses or the softness of of our fabric bringing you back into the moment during a routine meeting - the possibilities are endless and personal for each wearer. . . Lalita is the the Hindu Goddess of Bliss and her names means “she who plays” - many of the pieces play on that transformative nature - be it day to night or boardroom to bedroom. . .Above all, the pieces are meant to feel good. Our bamboo fabric is insanely soft and designed to accentuate your curves in the most flattering ways. I love doing any part I can to help woman love and appreciate themselves and their beauty a little bit more.

MilliOnAir

85

What moment in your career are you the most proud of? There is still a part of me that is most proud of my Kickstarter campaign because it initially brought me out of my comfort zone and gave me the confidence to continuously push outside that comfy place to move forward and surpass what I even thought possible. It truly helped me to expand my belief system on who I was and what I was capable of because if you’d ever mentioned Kickstarter before I would have never believed I could do it. I believe the adage by Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” Kickstarter showed me to keep believing that I can and not to limit myself to whatever I may have believed was possible, despite appearances. It also forced me to reach out and connect with others to really form the initial Lalita tribe of supporters, most of whom are still with the brand today and are just as excited with each milestone. To further contribute to it being a surreal experience, I had some of my favorite actresses - and just downright beautiful and amazing human beings - support me during the event - from Felicity Huffman to Jennifer Grey (I probably know every line from Dirty Dancing). You have dressed some incredible celebrities ranging from Tyra Banks to Sharon Stone, what other celebrities would you like to see wearing your pieces and why? A few women I would definitely love to see in Lalita are Madonna, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Pink. They are strong, outspoken women, who own their own sensuality and sexuality. I admire their tremendous work ethic, style, unapologetic nature and dedication to their craft as well as their willingness to take risks.

If I look a few movie stars I’d love to see in Lalita, both Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren come to mind. They are both such incredibly beautiful women who embrace body positivity in their messaging and actions. I would be honored to a special piece for any of these women to wear, on or off stage, or the red carpet. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs? Stick with it. It’s not easy and everything takes so much longer than you imagine, so be prepared for that, both emotionally and financially. I do, however, believe that everything happens at the right time even if it doesn’t feel that way at the moment, especially when you’re feeling disappointed that it didn’t go your way. I believe sometimes the Universe is gently letting us know that the outcome can be even better if we wait and trust in the process. I’ve found that when things did not go my way, I not only learned the most but was pushed to create something even more incredible than I could have originally imagined. MilliOnAir

87

Female Empowerment Since my time at Brown University I've been working to inspire and empower women, be it through advocacy or education and Lalita is a natural continuation of this journey. As we become profitable, we will donate a portion to a women's non-profit for survivors of sex trafficking. Lalita recognizes that not all women have the privilege of owning their own body and sexuality, but we believe it should be a fundamental right, not a privilege.

What’s next for Lalita? I am so excited about all that is to come in 2019! I’m focusing on the new bamboo jersey collection of ready to wear and I’m thrilled as to how much the line has evolved. This new line naturally has a seductive edge but is very much ready to wear and our specially made bamboo jersey is absolutely incredible to the touch. I am also expanding our leather goods with a new line of luxury handbags that I am finding very hard not to share on social media right now because I am so excited. The original prototype that I made as a personal bespoke bag was getting me stopped in the streets so we decided to officially launch a handbag collection for FW 2019. As I have continued to learn, the line has continued to mature and I stay open to where inspiration and guidance direct me. This next collection is a natural evolution of Lalita and features luxurious size inclusive designs with impeccable detail, gorgeous draping, and flattering designs - for both day and night!

MilliOnAir | London Fashion Week

By Fashion Contributor Ross Pollard

MilliOnAir

Kicking off my fashion week coverage is a look at the other hub of fashion week, based in Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden, Fashion Scout has become the go to place for fashion editors like myself to find the emerging stars of the industry. Martyn Roberts and his team have over the years created a space that nurtures independent and emerging labels, giving them a home that just isn’t offered anywhere else off schedule. Over the years it’s become a place I love in my pursuit of new designers and the stars of tomorrow, so I thought let’s take a closer look at some of the looks from another stellar season in those hallowed halls . . .

A – Jane Malaysian designer Alice Jane treated us to a spectacle of the linear using lines of colour and straight cuts to create her statement looks. I loved how the pops of colour were used to accent the monochrome palate that ran through the looks. Each of the looks in the collection is a fabric description of power and presence. These simple almost retro elements have been combined to add an almost futuristic feel, you could imagine these gracing a ball held on a space station, I think it be well worth the journey to see. MilliOnAir

Ada Zanditon Speaking of futuristic, that whizzes us perfectly to Ada Zandition, the London designer embraced upcycled leather and PVC in her fashion forward collection. Worn by Ariana Grande, Kate Nash Mariah Carey her fun but bold collections are fast becoming the stuff of legend for stylists working in the music industry. I also loved that due to the fabrics tones moving and changing as they pass light the whole collection has a feel of perpetual motion, with each step, turn or twist a new pattern is created, and a new visual element is there to be seen, add in the nods towards the 90’s cyber fashion period and we have a designer that has the ability to weave a variety of notes into a masterpiece.

Cassey Gan I love print I love bold, I love layered, I love Cassey Gan. The collection mixes muted greys, blacks and more modest colours as accents against the striking colours of the prints, an effect that is built on clever manipulation of layers of fabric. This is constructionist graffiti as fashion, and will be perfect for the spring and summer. It’s rare to see reds, blues and greens mixed together, and even though at a first glance the print may suggest camouflage it’s much more about impact, these are street stopping looks designed to create an entrance and add a pop wherever the wearer is going.

Jiri Kalfar Jiri Kalfar is the epitome of the quiet meteor, having been shown across a host of fashions most august titles, and with perfect reason. His designs are refined to a sharp elegance, but with the clever intuitive use of texture, ruffle and embellishment they become playful and fresh. This is the roaring twenties re-imagined for the new millennium, with a thought of that celebrated era, these are looks that are very of the moment, the detailing is superb and the structure sublime. I remain convinced that we’ll see Jiri become a red carpet dresser of huge importance over the next few years, but you should get on board now.

Simon Mo Now regular readers may recall in the last edition I wrote about Taipei and my trip there, well one of the people who sent advice on where to go and what to eat was Simon Mo. I love Simon, his warm personality is more than matched by his design skill and his oceanbased collection is inspired by the beautiful island he grew up on and the threat of plastics and pollution. The variations of the blue tones reflect the differing hues of the Pacific Ocean that laps onto the beaches of his home, the deep colours of the water off the coast, the lighter shades the waters of the coastal regions and the whites of the gentle froth on the waves as they wander ashore. The light breeziness of the fabrics completes a collection just perfect for your summer travels.

Starsica One of the things I love about Starsica is the playful darkness of each collection, this is a label that is a candy floss reinvention of Halloween and is all the better for it. What may seem like an ordinary print on a delightfully cute dress becomes a series of little monsters, skulls and nods to the occult on closer inspection. There is genius in this collection, to design cute clothes is a tightrope, so easy to fall into saccharine or overly sugared, but here it’s played out as it should be, the modernist elements makes every item wearable as a complete capsule wardrobe, perfect for those of use with a love of the demonic and an inner impishness yearning to break free. Rest Party Eat Repeat

Survive any Season by Bridget Hancock

M

any of us are rushed in our lives buying pre made foods, reaching for coffee to wake up, wine to unwind, and partying in between.

Rushing, snacking, smoking, drinking, popping uppers downers, not hitting the gym and relying on early Sunday nights to recover before we start all over again. Add in the exposure to chemicals in our food, pollutants in the air and toxins we handle and yet despite it all, the body is capable of healing itself provided we pay a little attention and give it the right nutrients to fulfil its role to support the body in its attempt to clean our mess and avoid long term damage. Furthermore recent research has proven over 80% of Serotonin and Dopamine, our feel good chemicals are made in the Digestive tract so it is vital we eat ourselves happy. Firstly we need to be mindful about eating, and take the time to chew our food until its a liquid. Eating on the run, whilst talking or catching up on social media and simply chewing enough to make food small enough to swallow means the body hasn’t time to prepare and produce the juices we need to break down it down on arrival at the stomach and as a result we feel full, bloated and uncomfortable. Protein is our best friend but not necessarily in huge amounts unless we are specifically building muscle. Protein is broken down to amino acids which run our body at the cellular level and we require roughly 1g per kilo body weight ( 0.83g-1g) daily. If you weigh 60kgs about 50-60 grams a day is a guide. (1chicken breast or a salmon fillet is 26g, 2 eggs is 12g, 2 tbs of hemp seeds is 20g or 1 cup cooked quinoa is 8g) Eating at least 10grams of protein at every meal will stimulate those gastric juices reducing bloating and the workload on our system. Drinking water at meal times also dilute these gastric juices slowing down digestion so drinking is best 20 minutes before or an hour after eating.

MilliOnAir

Our minerals and vitamins are absorbed in the small intestine so it is vital we keep stimulants that rush this process separate and therefore coffee should be kept at least an hour either side of taking any vitamins and eating. Despite our fears fats are our friends. Fats keep the cell membranes soft to absorb the water we drink and some vitamins, keeping our skin supple and nourished and so we need to embrace the good fats and ensure we include Almonds, Olive oil, Avocado, Mackerel, Sardines or Wild Salmon. Detoxification occurs in our Liver and this is where we need to step up and support it which we can do by simply adding 500g of cruciferous vegetables a week. (Rocket 1 bag 70-100g ,1 head of Broccoli is 350g, 1 bag Kale is 500g or brussel sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower ) After the liver has done all the work, packaging up the toxins, excess oestrogen and harmful chemicals, we require daily bowel movements to remove the waste so it isn’t reabsorbed back into our body. Therefore we should drink 2 litres of filtered water spread out daily and eat 30g of fibre for women or 35grams for men daily to make enough bulk to signal the walls to expel the waste. (Try 100g black beans for 10g or fibre and 10g protein). Add some fruit, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fats as part of your three meals a day and give your body a rest from digestion in between.

Finally Vitamin D is essential to boost our immune system and is available from sunlight so winter supplementation in the northern hemisphere is recommended. Insufficiency has been associated with higher rates of cancers including colon prostate and breast cancer, so it is worth checking. With a little mindfulness and self love our bodies will carry us through to party and live a full and vibrant life. Bridget Hancock BSc Pharmacology Physiology,Yoga teacher and currently in her final year of Naturopathic Nutrition will be hosting the next retreat 29th May-2nd June Mykonos

| SKINCARE | AESTHETICS | BEAUTY Q&A by Beauty Editor Steven Smith

MilliOnAir presents the King and Queen of the aesthetic world - Doctor Ioannis Liakas and Vicky Grammatikopoulou. Their clients include celebrities, top models - and even royalty. Ioannis is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, senior lecturer at Queen Mary’s Medical School and an associate member of the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. Before moving into the business side of aesthetics, Vicky was a teacher trainer and university lecturer. Together they are Vie Aesthetics, and run leading clinics in Harley Street, Germany and Southend. It is Christmas and my friend is so difficult to buy for. She is always moaning about looking old, so I thought that a gift certificate for Botox or filler would be nice, as she can’t afford them herself. Do you think it would be a rude gift or is it normal for people to buy this sort of thing for others? Paul Edmonds, Battersea. Paul, a gift certificate for a treatment at a beauty clinic does not have to specify a particular treatment but will just give a value. She could then use it for products or a facial, and most people would appreciate that. When she is at the clinic, she will be seen by a doctor who could advise her on what would make her look good, and the possible options she has for using the gift certificate. It is a great present and she will love it.

I am quite distressed as I have quite a large Lipoma on the back of my neck. The doctor I went to see says that removing it will be difficult and will leave a deep scar. People point it out at the gym and ask what it is. Is there anything that can be done that does not involve surgery? Steven James, Leeds Steven, what you are referring to is a common accumulation of fat cells that affects both men and women, and the causes of which are mostly genetic. The best option for treating the problem is to have local fat injections that removes the need for surgery. It is a quick procedure that only requires a local anesthetic. There is no cutting so you are not left with any scars. Results are excellent and often one session is enough. The injection is called "Aqualyx " and is available at our clinic.

My mum has arthritis in her knees and hands that is painful all year round but worse in the winter. My friend’s mum had treatment at an aesthetic clinic in Australia and it was very helpful. Is there anything available in the UK? Karen Roberts, Brighton Karen, you are probably referring to osteoarthritis, a very common condition of the joints caused by wear and tear as a result of ageing. There are a number of options to treat this, ranging from simple painkillers, to steroid injections directly into the joints, to joint injections using specially formulated hyaluronic acid. If your friend's mother had treatment at an aesthetics clinic, I can only assume that they had "mesotherapy", a specially formulated mixture of amino acids and vitamins, as well as pain relief medication that was injected into the skin above the painful joints. This has also been proven to help joint pain. Mesotherapy for joint pain is very popular in continental Europe, Canada and Australia, however, it is not available in the UK. Please do feel free, however, to book your mother in at our clinic for a free consultation in order to explore all the options available to her.

Everyone is talking about stem cells. Please can you explain to me how it can be used in aesthetics? I have read that you can actually use it instead of fillers and that it is even more effective? Diane Peters, Hammersmith Diane, stem cells are cells that if put, or injected, into any tissue in the body will adjust and convert into the specific tissue of the injected body part. Since they are "new" cells, they regenerate the tissues in the injected areas. Stem cells can be found in the blood, but they are found in abundance in fat tissue. We are excited to be able to let you know that we are pioneering this method here in the UK, within the field of aesthetic medicine. During this procedure, our doctor will extract fat cells from the tummy, after which they are specially filtered and put into syringes, and then re-injected into the face. The results are stunning, adding instant volume to facial structures and providing long-lasting rejuvenation. The results look certainly more natural than filler and last much longer too. I love your column and plan to come and see you in the New Year. My boyfriend would like to come too after seeing the hair therapy you offer. Can you tell me if it is very expensive and is it effective for everyone? He is receding a bit and also going thin at the crown. Adelle Parker, Manchester

Adele, the treatment we offer for hair loss is based on stem cells. We take pieces of tissue from those areas of the scalp where hair is abundant, usually at the back. These pieces of tissue are then "cut down " into thousands of tiny fragments. These fragments contain vital stem cells that are injected into the scalp in the areas where hair is thinning. It is effective for both men and women and the results can be seen within 2-3 months. I had a bad accident earlier this year and it has left me with some unpleasant scars. I dream of starting the new year free of scars. My beautician suggested Bio Oil and some other treatments but they have not really filled the area. Is there anything you can suggest that might help? Pauline Harper, Hull Pauline, I am sorry to hear about your problem. Scars as a result of accidents can be very troublesome and difficult to treat. Depending on the type of the scar, we can offer treatment with soft surgery such as plexR. This is an innovative plasma technology that eliminates excess skin and smooths out the surface of the skin. Even if your scars don’t disappear completely, they will be considerably reduced. In addition, if your injuries led to scarring that have caused dents in your face, these can be treated with filler to smooth them over. We can also reduce fine, or smaller, scarring by using chemical peels. In summary there are multiple options

#POSITIVITY with

PHIL HELLMUTH

POKER phenomenon PHIL HELLMUTH is the author of (hashtag)POSITIVITY - an inspiring book which is giving brilliant advice to millions of people around the world. In his new and exciting column exclusively for Milli-On-Air Global Magazine, Phil asks a series of positive questions to a celebrity from the world of business, showbiz or sport every month. Here he puts the (hashtag)POSITIVITY spotlight on Editor in Chief, Creative Designer of MilliOnAir Media MILLIE COOPER Edited by MilliOnAir Global Magazine Editor at large LAURIE STONE

What is your earliest memory of an act of positivity.... My earliest memory is from my childhood, when I was around five or six at school in London. It was a beautiful multiracial school. We all got on, we all had fun, we all treated each other the same, we basically didn't know any different. I just remember everyone was so positive and it reflected in my school work (I still have all my school books and reports), I was very artistic back then, even though it was only stick people and colorful crayon drawings. So yes that was my first happy/positive moment in my life. All though when I turned seven I moved to Somerset and it was a new journey and a little bit of a negative story, which one day I may talk about. Why is Positivity as opposed to negativity important to you? Positivity has been very important for me all my life. I have had way too much negativity growing up and on some occasions it nearly destroyed my soul. I, unfortunately attracted the wrong people into my life which in turn attracted bad situations, it was not until I was in my early forties that I realised I needed to detox myself from an awful lot of people to save my sanity and my health. It worked and almost instantly I had decent people surrounding me and I began to love myself again! I have never been so happy and it has helped so much by talking to like minded people who have had similar journeys and have woken up to the fact that POSITIVITY is part of the key to happiness.

“Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you. MilliOnAir

135

Which positive person from history would you like to meet... Confucius, his quotes are messages I live by every day. He was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. The philosophy of Confucius, also known as Confucianism, emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop'' ― Confucius MilliOnAir

What is the most positive piece of advice you pass on to people you meet.... So many people reach out to me now days and I must admit I am overwhelmed by the inspirational people I am connected too, more inspiring than me I must admit. They still ask me how I keep going, how I keep smiling. My advice to myself and others is... "Laugh, even when you want to cry, because laughing is the best way to get through life. Everything that seems big will be small one day."

"Don't take anything personally. Nothing other people do is actually about you. If we let what others say affect us, we set ourselves up for needless pain."

What is the most positive song on your play list. I have many on my play list, but one tune keeps popping up on my list which takes me back to when I was twelve living by the sea and it seemed the summer lasted for ever and I think this was my happiest moment in life, not a care in the world...The Style Council Long Hot Summer

How do you deal with negative people.... I DON'T any more! I used to talk for ages to people with negative thoughts and in the end I realised it drained the hell out of me! I had to shut off from these people, now if anyone starts to talk or act negative, I smile and then run a mile! What is the most positive film you have watched... It has to be '' Pay it Forward it still gives me goosebumps and an absolute happy feeling. It's the story of a social studies teacher who gives an assignment to his junior high school class to think of an idea to change the world for the better, then put it into action. When one young student creates a plan for "paying forward" favors, he not only affects the life of his struggling single mother, but he sets in motion an unprecedented wave of human kindness which, unbeknownst to him, has blossomed into a profound national phenomenon.

What's paying it forward? That's me. And that's three people. And I'm going to help them, but it has to be something really big... ...something they can't do by themselves. So I do it for them... MilliOnAir

137

If you could sit down with four positive people who would they be and what qualities would they bring.... Number one has to be, Richard Branson, I have admired him since I can remember, I wrote to him when I was about fourteen telling him how much I admired him and saying one day I would love to work as a Virgin Air Hostess, he did write back to me thanking me (I lost the letter!), and I never made it as an air hostess! I follow him on Linkedin and read all his posts which inspire me everyday. ( I should write to him again and ask him if I can interview him!). Life coach Tony Robbins who we got to interview for this very page #POSITIVITY, he just makes complete sense to me, I feel like I am in tune with everything that comes out of his mind. Actor and artist Anthony Hopkins who I met in LA a couple of years ago, he was the sweetest nicest person, he is a truly talented actor and I absolutely love his art. Gary Vaynerchuck entrepreneur, author, speaker and internet personality. He does it right for me every time, he taught me most of what I know now on how to 'be' on social media. Here is a great quote that popped up today from him; ''Your Grandparents went through war and the depression and now you are crying because you don't have 1,000 followers? Get the f*ck out of here.'' Oprah Winfrey Simply through being compassionate, caring and charitable, her ability to emotionally connect with people. She shares her wealth with those who need it most, having personally donated over $300 million to charitable causes. Oprah's wealth and fame is certainly no accident, as she believes that luck is simply "preparation meeting opportunity". There are more than this but these people all bring with them a sense of self, understanding, wisdom, insight and observation of self and an openness to possibility and positivity for various reasons.

What is the most positive piece of of advice you have been given - when, where and by whom.... Actually a quote from a movie called Shadowlands a true story about C. S. Lewis with Anthony Hopkins, I am not sure if it is a quote written into the movie or if it is actually a C.S Lewis quote

You know, I don't want to be somewhere else anymore. I'm not waiting for anything new to happen... not looking around the next corner and over the next hill. I'm here now. That's enough. This sums me up right now, after years of running away, or searching for something new, I am where I want to be and I am truly happy with myself and what I am creating. MilliOnAir

Do you get positivity from religion or spirituality.... I don't actually believe in anything apart from what I see in real life with my own eyes. I am not a follower of anything, I have made my life on my own with tons of negativity along the way and I have managed to guide myself through all the ups and downs. So to answer the question...no I don't get positivity from religion or spirituality, I only get positivity from my open mind, being myself and being around nature.

How do you react positively to fear....

Valentina

I have trained my brain over the years not to fear anything or anyone, I have a very strong sense of being and I will never put myself in bad situations. So I laugh fear in the face, whether it has been for a job interview in the past, a bad situation with someone or a big meeting I have to go to. I just love life, it's short it is sweet and I really don't have time to fear. Who is the most positive person in your life....

''Valentina'' What is the key to you being resilient.... Again I have trained my brain over the years to switch off, walk away or ignore negative situations. I have had to do it, as it has made me ill in the past, one such time was a couple of years ago, I could not speak or get my words out properly, I didn't know why I just thought I was overtired. After three weeks of being like that I eventually went to the doctors, I told them all my symptoms and they rushed me to hospital where I had hours of tests. I was later diagnosed with a TIA and they said it was all due to stress. It has taken me at least two years to be able to talk properly again and get my confidence back. What is your inspirational catchphrase....

''If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.'' MilliOnAir

Where in the world are you in your most positive state.... Where there is no noise apart from noises from nature. Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from being around noise. But I must admit the sea is my life and I have to be near it, I grew up in a seaside town. I will retire one day in Malibu that is my most positive place I need and want to be, I have visited more time than I can remember and I feel like it is my next home.

Los Angeles

If you could be known for one positive achievement in your life what would it be.... MilliOnAir Magazine! I have put my heart and soul into this magazine and I have attracted so many talented people into the business from all over the world, I receive hundreds of positive comments every month. It is my life and I love it... We will be launching in USA one day soon.

MilliOnAir

In what way have you felt loved in your life.... When I stopped looking for love and fell in love with myself found myself. If you were a superpower leader what positive act would you give to the world.... To stop unnecessary torture and killing of all animals, I have watched way too many videos and it has woken me up to helping as much as I possibly can either through signing a legitimate petition, donating money or sharing a video. Animals cannot speak up for themselves, but I can speak up for them. What time of the day do you find the most positive.... Any time of the day, I am in the office everyday and I have to brainstorm with myself or my team all the time, I have ideas flying at me from all directions. Positivity is my key. What aspect of your own positivity or negativity would you change.... I am at a point in my life where I do not need to change anything. Like I said in my quote earlier...You know, I don't want to be somewhere else anymore. I'm not waiting for anything new to happen...not looking around the next corner and over the next hill. I'm here now. That's enough.

Wings is a short film that tells the story of Audrey and Dora, two Land Army girls who fall in love; but when world war two ends, Audrey’s husband returns and so must ‘normality’. Many years pass, and the women live a life apart; but an unexpected reunion is on the horizon, and it is never too late to be brave, and never too late to love. Hopefully most homosexual people of this period were able to find their wings eventually, and leave behind the fear, guilt and judgement that tethered them. Wings is for those who did, those who couldn’t, and those who that are yet to.. Back in 2014, a very crude form of Wings was first conceived when the director Jamie Weston worked on a documentary called Essex Girls:

Carla and Jamie are both very passionate about positive social change, and previously worked together on a short film called ‘Grey Future’ that called for a full UK ivory ban, and the preservation of endangered elephants and rhinos. In a magical turn of events, the WINGS script attracted national treasures, BAFTA award winning and OBE actresses Miriam Margolyes and Virginia Mckenna, alongside Rosie Day from the cult television series Outlander, and Bobby Lockwood from ‘Wolf Blood’. Wings also features actress Lu Corfield and patron of Pride Cymru, who speaks passionately about the project: ‘One of the things that I love the most about Wings, is seeing the younger generation - our creative team, firmly handing the mic back to a generation that wasn’t allowed to speak out.’

‘While watching through the rushes of the WWII land army section, I found myself fixated with so many questions about life for women during that time, so much was still to be said and within the documentary we made, it had only highlighted a snapshot of the time.’ Jamie Weston and Carla Fraser worked on the WINGS script and then brought this story alive, on a micro budget funded by their day jobs, and with a very quick turn around! MilliOnAir

The first block of filming has taken place and the next section is set to be filmed in April 2019, starring Margolyes and Mckenna. All of this is only possible with the support of those backing the project via Kickstarter, and funds raised go towards the filmmaking process and festival fees, ensuring that WINGS circulates world wide film festivals, touching as many hearts as possible. Team Wings have plans to screen the film within retirement homes, and ensure that this is something that is given back to the LGBTQ+ community, to encourage inclusiveness and celebrate their print on history. Please follow the Kickstarter link to become apart of the WINGS journey and ensure this project is completed; there are exclusive rewards available, including being a part of the WINGS credits, behind the scenes material, signed photos and exclusive downloads of the film when it is completed! Aquarella

FROM MIAMI TO MYKONOS Aquarella is a stunning 43 metre luxury yacht, with the capacity to birth twelve guests and eight crew. Her unique interior boasts sumptuous Lora Piana fabric walls, bespoke fittings and unique Art by renowned celebrity photographer Lorenzo Agius. One of Agius’s most famous portraits of a blindfolded Angelina Jolie adorns the salon wall and it’s the very first thing one sees when boarding Aquarella. It is very much an apropos piece that ties in well with the yacht’s intriguing past.

Aquarella is majestic and beautiful and has somewhat of an interesting history. She was once parked outside the infamous record producer Scott Storch’s Miami mansion on star-island and previously named Tiffany. Storch’s impressive catalogue of hit songs range from Beyonce, 50 Cent, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey to name but a few. It seems he is responsible for all our favourite 90’s hits. One can only imagine the A list stars that partied on this magnificent yacht purchased at the time for twenty million by Storch.

MilliOnAir

Due to Storchs excessive party life style, and addiction to the good life, Storch found himself going down quicker than the Titanic and unfortunately for Tiffany she was abandoned. Tiffany lay in a Greek marina slowly deteriorating for six year battling the elements. Her faith seemed foreordained. This once music haven was now a washed up shell and shadow of her former self. Not everyone can spot a diamond in the rough. It took one man to come along and take Tiffany and turn her into Aquarella. Aquarella translates to Watercolour in the Greek language. Vasileios Antoniades could see just how unique the structure of this yacht was and with an award winning interior yacht designer Ioanna Marinopoulos the sketches began. Regardless of how times Antoniades was told he was crazy to take on such an

inconceivable project, only he could see the jewel that was waiting to sparkle. He forged ahead with a top team and started the ambitious journey of resurrecting Tiffany and turning her into Aquarella. And that he did! Now Aquarella hosts everyone from Presidents to Princesses to Popes. Where once music royalty sat now real royalty sits. A yacht with so much history it begs to ask the question “If these walls could talk what would they say”. This beauty now mainly spends her days traveling the Ionian and Aegean Sea, frequenting Europes In Vogue and popular Greek islands, from Mykonos to Santorini, although Aquarella’s Captain and crew know a few secret special places that are still hidden treasures from the rest of the world and if you are lucky enough to stay on Aquarella the Captain may just take you.

This beautiful jewel “Aquarella” is available for charter and for the right person she is for sale, Contact details: Nouova Era Maritine Corp - +306944346378 Email: info@praxis4yacht.com

Samantha’s Travel Diary Tahiti - Welcome to paradise.

Descending into the French Polynesian capital, Papeete, we were greeted to the strumming ukuleles and garlands of heavenly scented flowers. The general arrival time in Papeete is around 5am, which means in addition to our tropical welcome from the locals, the island bestows its own gift of colour upon us. The fiery tangerine sunrise. As the famous painter Gauguin once said of the island, “Everything in the landscape blinded me, dazzled me” and he couldn’t have been more accurate. Tahiti has become somewhat of a beautiful stepping-stone for travellers heading to the more remote French Polynesian islands, the outer islands. If there is a paradise on earth today, that’s where you will find it. Tahiti, however, is worth a tour. The mighty forest-cloaked mountain island and the black-sand beaches are just the beginning. Gracefully positioned way above sea level and tucked so perfectly within the clutches of the rugged mountains, waterfalls hide. You have to be prepared to explore the inner depths of the island if you want to witness theses hidden gushing spectacles. Once found, you will find yourself succumb to the magic of Tahiti. Moorea In the distance from Papeete, Moorea rises majestically out of the ocean. Crowned by clouds, this enchanting island is a combination of emerald green pinnacles and lagoons with fifty shades of blue. Home to stingrays, sharks and turtles, the enchanting beauty Moorea possesses is truly unforgettable. The journey across from Papeete via the fast ferry was as-though Moorea had summoned her most beautiful and wild marine life to personally escort us across the south seas. Humpback whales danced in the distance as dolphins played carelessly alongside us. The life force and spirit that surrounds and connects all living things in the Islands of Tahiti, known as ‘Mana’ to the Tahitian people, consumes us. You can see it, touch it, taste it and feel it, and we knew as we made our way across the sea we had surrendered to its effortless magic. As we approached the pass its soon became apparent the spirit of Moorea was just as welcoming as the lucky Tahitians that get to call this island home. As we drove around the islands edge with each bend unravelling a new and alluring sight, we had the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in true Tahitian culture. Tattooed locals walked barefoot along the roadside, usually with a brood of smiling children skipping along in toe. Quaint villages, boutiques and restaurants lined the roadside with fresh brightly coloured, exotic fruits sprawled across stalls. Uninhabited beaches and secluded coves seize the edge of the shady lagoon adding to Moorea’s unique charm. We also couldn’t help but be transported through the luscious smell of the islands flowers. A combination of the locally known ‘Tiare Tahiti’ (Tahitian Gardenia), Frangipani, Hibiscus and Jasmin (just to name a few) fill the air with their sweet perfume. We decided to rent a villa directly on the beach as we were joined by family and friends to celebrate the birthday of my boyfriend Jean, who is actually native Tahitian. We spent our weekend snorkelling the picture perfect lagoon, free-diving with the local black-tip sharks and spearfishing for our supper. While French Polynesia is more typically identified as the place of scorching romance and delicious Mai-tai cocktails, it quite evidently offers so much more. An adventure packed tropical paradise that consists of 118 islands screaming out to be explored. With the advantage of travelling with native Tahitians, I was able to experience authentic Polynesian life in its most natural form. With the overwhelming desire to see more of what Moorea possessed, we made our way inland to the foot of Mount Rotui, to saddle up and explore the pineapple fields and Opunohu Valley. Trekking through the unspoilt setting, surrounded by nature via horse-back is undeniably transcending. The volcanic mountains, cascading waterfalls and panoramic views are as bewitching as the legend of the pierced mountain. According to ancient myth, the pierced hole which can still to this day be seen at the top of Mount Mouaputa, is a result of Hiro, God of thieves, planning to steal one of Moorea’s three mountains, Rotui, and take it to Raiatea. When warned of Hiro’s evil intent, Pai – who was half god, half man and known to have incredible strength – decided to keep close watch from Point Tata’a on Tahiti. When the thieves attempted to steal the mountain, Pai threw his spear through the top of Mount Mouaputa, awakening the roosters who sounded the alarm and drove away the unwelcome visitors. However, the thieves still managed to steal a piece of Mount Rotui and with it, some toa trees, which can be found isolated on a mountain on Raiatea. Moorea’s timeless beauty and virtually untouched scenery are what have lead to her obtaining her status as the ‘Enchantress’.

Bora Bora 50minutes North-West of Tahiti, lies the ‘Jewel of the Seas’, Bora Bora. From the moment we began descending, the love-affaire with the island started. The views of the translucent lagoon caressing the barrier-reef were merely the welcoming party for the main star, the iconic Mount Otemanu. The remnants of the extinct volcano which rises in two peaks from the centre of the island are as bewitching as the colour-saturated dream Bora Bora haemorrhaged. Emeralds, jades and sapphires at dusk to the bleeding apricots and pinks of dawn. We made our way from the tiny airport via boat transfer to our hotel. Slicing through the lagoon as if it were silk, mesmerised by the unravelling shades of glistening turquoise and teal, Jean and I were like a pair of giddy teenagers as we were overcome with pure ecstasy. Nestled away on Motu Piti Aau, lied the Intercontinental Resort and Thalasso Spa, which was to be our home for the next 3 nights. Water-villas perched on stilts stretched out into the distance as if reaching out to Mount Otemanu. Each suite with a floor to ceiling window at the end of a king-size bed, as if a huge piece of art were hung ensuring you woke to the sight of the sun piercing through the lagoon. The glass opening set into the floor allowed you to fully capture the remarkable city of brightly coloured marine life right below. This idyllic retreat was as though someone was vicariously photoshopping every angle right before our eyes. How is it possible that somewhere so incredibly flawless actually exists? Taking a moment to simply stand still, we were certain our eyes must have been deceiving us. The mesmerising beauty of which Bora Bora radiated so effortlessly was exactly what dreams of paradise consisted of. This ultra luxurious slice of heaven wasn’t perhaps, the luxurious which you would expect from the Maldives or the French Riviera, this was the luxury of total isolation, freedom and connecting to the spirit of living things in a totally natural and unspoilt speck in the South Seas, this paradise was truly spellbinding. It also offered so much more than sipping fresh coconuts and basking under the tropical sun. Diving with sharks, feeding stingrays, snorkelling, exploring the lagoon and reef via kayak or Va’a (outrigger canoe) are merely a few of the more adventurous pursuits which are on offer. We spent our mornings, after overindulging in the breakfast buffet on the local delicacy, ‘Poisson Cru’, fresh raw fish in citrus juice and coconut milk, paddle boarding and snorkelling with the the rainbow coloured marine life. We decided I would experience my first Scuba dive here in Bora Bora, Jean being somewhat of a professional merman, having grown up in Tahiti was adamant I experience the world below the waves. This underwater city was overrun with giant napoleon wrasses, hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, angelfish, banner fish, parrotfish and pink soft anemones. The marine life was as friendly as the locals on land. Intrigued by our presence they joined us as the current gently washed us along the powdery sand of the lagoon floor. We could feel ‘Mana’ was just as alive down here as it was up above. As I glanced up I could see the sun rays shooting through the glass-like water, it was then I felt a surge of emotion. This wasn’t a fairy-tale this was real. We drifted through each day on Bora Bora time. Consumed with happiness and love, could life get any more romantic? Tikehau Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go completely off the grid and enter a world of pure serenity that is totally unspoilt? Tikehau is exactly that. Conveniently placed as one of the small atolls closets to Tahiti and accessible by daily flights. The preserved charm of simplicity is what makes this extraordinary island so unique. Tikehau, meaning ‘peaceful landing’ consists of one resort, ‘Pearl Beach Resort’ and is one of only two inhabited islets in the fifty-five kilometre circumference of dots in this part of the Tuamotu group. With a reputation of being the most bountiful fish destination in the French Polynesia, it came at no surprise this was the last stop of our seventeen day trip. This coconut palm lined motu was not only a new experience for me, but one for Jean too. At first glance, it looks very similar to the other islands we had visited previously, overwater bungalows, sandy shores and ridiculously blue lagoons. However, approaching just a few metres off the reservation, the seclusion became apparent. Wandering along the rose-golden sands, which have been dyed from the coral we soon had our very own paradise. Not a sole to be seen just pristine waters nuzzling the edge of the scattered motu’s. All of which are accessible either by kayak or some via walking at low tide. Sunsets here are also a work of art. The sky totally drenched in shades of fiery oranges, reds and pinks. We watched from our kayak as the sun slowly set into the distance, leaving a backlit feature beyond the clouds of dazzling indigos and violets. As the sky reflected onto the waters edge the colours began to dance with the twinkling of stars which were soon to blanket the night sky. We slowly made our way back to shore with a trail of black-tip sharks frolicking

MilliOnAir

just below the surface. In the distance we could hear the crashing of the ocean waves as they found themselves at the mercy of the reef. For most, this could be somewhat frightening, however, the magic that Tikehau possessed made this scene all the more transfixing and an experience we wouldn’t forget. Diving in Tikehau is a must. The high-visibility waters around the coral reefs host an astonishing variety of marine life. The manta rays are huge, the fish so colourful they look superimposed and the reef sharks plentiful. However, the real expedition is the Tuheiva pass, an underwater coral playground for eagle rays, turtles, dolphins, tuna, barracudas, sharks and smaller technicolour fish. The volume of fish is so much that Jacques Cousteau’s research crew dubbed it “the most fish abundant Tuamotu atoll.” So naturally, this is where I would be doing my second dive, and my first ocean dive. This tranquil world of both peace and plentiful above and below the water is a personal playground. We found nothing but absolute serenity on the calm and graceful shores. However, if you find yourself craving more you can also take a boat to the centre of the lagoon to visit Motu Puarua at the northeastern end. This small islet, known as ‘bird island’ is a natural avery for numerous colonies of sea birds. You also have the option to venture to the main village of Tuherahera on the Southern side. Tuherahera is been labelled as one of the most attractive villages in the Atolls. We found ourselves far too engulfed in the gifts of Tikehau that we didn’t drift further afield this time. It was the perfect end to a profoundly extraordinary trip and I felt incredibly lucky to have been able to experience even a slice of the magnificence the French Polynesia has to offer. Modern Folk Written by Alison J Lowe MBE

Every month we seek to Uncover new products, experiences and places to inspire you and offer you those special touches and products that add something extra to a luxury lifestyle.

If you are a fan of reading Interiors magazines and websites, then you will know that designs inspired by Folk Art are a huge trend within the interior design world at the moment. So, this month I decided to learn a bit more about this trend having uncovered some amazing Folk Art furniture pieces in Modern Folk, Bermondsey. First of all, to interior design professionals Folk Art is the term widely used to describe ‘art of the people,’ designs that have been created by craftspeople in rural locations. This work can cover many different forms from quilts to pottery, furniture to artworks and wood carvings, but the usual characteristic of it is the naïve style and abundance of often clashing colours and prints.

MilliOnAir

Whilst Folk Art can sometimes be perceived as more accessible art for the masses, the feeding frenzy for Folk Art by collectors and interior designers to include it in their collections or high worth properties, has meant that it has an increasing value. Folk Art can be found in many countries, although many collectors, galleries and museums only focus on American or Mexican folk art, many amazing pieces can also be discovered in India or from across Eastern Europe. I started looking into Folk Art after seeing lots of the influencers and interior designers post pictures of the amazing structural objects and art works they have bought. So not wanting to miss out, I went on a mission to find some pieces! Although initially I thought about having a few pottery pieces or a quaint artwork, instead I discovered a new passion for Folk Art furniture when I visited Modern Folk.

Modern Folk is a concept store on Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey which showcases a collection of authentic, handmade folk-art furniture and artworks from across the globe. Owner Kitty Walsh told me: ‘Folk art has been a passion of mine for all of my life, and I am really excited to share these pieces with our customers. I love that each item is authentic and unique, that you can always see the hand of the craftsman or woman. For me, these works are a link to our shared past, to a time when people would know the origin of every object that they owned, and most probably the person who made it. These pieces are the ultimate antidote to today’s disposable culture – and they look great in contemporary homes!’

MilliOnAir

177

At the store, I discovered some amazing Transylvanian hand painted furniture pieces. One of my favourites was an ornate wardrobe, painted with birds, flowers and trees of life, which are an important symbol in Hungarian folklore, as the mythical tree was said to link the realms of heaven, earth and the underworld. The piece was made in Tara C latei in Transylvania in the mid twentieth century, an area of Hungarian heritage which was known as ‘fancy country’ because of the highly decorated furniture. The store also had an ornate Transylvanian dresser made in 1943 which came from the same area. My favourite piece of all though, and one that I hope will soon be a statement piece in my hallway, was the Transylvanian Wedding Chest which was commissioned

for a wedding in June 1891. The piece was decorated with traditional Romanian symbols and inside an inscription recorded the date and the name of the bride, as chests like these were used to carry the bride’s possessions to her new house. Kitty told me that these wedding chests are one of her most popular pieces with customers and she regularly sources them as they are such a great way to own a piece of social history and an original folk art antique. If this particular one has gone before I am ready that Kitty assured me she will have other ones in soon. If the furniture isn’t your style, then the store also has amazing folk art glass works as well as raffia pieces and quilts as well as delightful handmade fashion pieces.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2019 Pantone has just revealed their pantone colour of the year for 2019 which is Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral. They describe this as an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge. Pantone say “PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral emits the desired, familiar, and energizing aspects of color found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind. Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color. Pantone has released a colour of the year for 20 years and each year their colour of the year has influenced product development in fashion, home furnishing, packaging, graphic design and industrial design. They say that the colour of the year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, their colour experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new colour influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact colour, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. I am not sure if this is the colour for me or it may just take time for me to get used to it. With my fair colouring and strawberry blonde hair then coral is not the best colour for me to wear but it may be a colour that I will adapt into my garden design for this summer or have some small highlights in my home. I will be watching with interest to see how much the high street buys into this colour for 2019.

THE MAGIC OF THE MOVIE MAKE-UNDER

Nicole Kidman’s new thriller Destroyer sees the Australian A-Lister transform from dazzling to down-at-heel, playing an emaciated, guilt-ridden LA cop reeling from personal tragedy. It’s as far from traditional glamour as she’s ever been. No surprise then that the film’s release coincides with Oscar season. Expect plenty of awards nods.

It’s almost part of a movie star’s to-do list now: going through hell to get closer to a character. Charlize Theron gained over two stone to play killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Matthew McConaughey lost three and a half for his turn as a dying rodeo star in Dallas Buyers’ Club. Both won multiple gongs for their troubles. For actors who have had so much made of their good looks - especially women - giving up that one currency for a 'serious' role is often lauded as brave. It sends a clear message that they're serious about their craft; the ultimate sacrifice for one’s art.

But what are the down sides? Kidman herself has said that, even with the prosthetics removed, she struggled to get out of character whilst filming Destroyer and would go home depressed at night (much to the frustration of husband Keith Urban). And for women so frequently looking elegant in the pages of beauty magazines, such a change can create sexist attention that their male counterparts would arguably never have to endure. “I put on a few pounds. I also put on some breasts” Renée Zellweger explained about her iconic turn as Bridget Jones. “But Bridget is

MilliOnAir

a perfectly normal weight and I've never understood why it matters so much. No male actor would get such scrutiny if he did the same thing for a role”.

There can also be medical issues. While reducing his weight to a little over seven stone for the dark drama The Machinist, Christian Bale was told by doctors that he was in dangerous territory and had to change his drastic diet. It hasn’t stopped him though. He is about to reveal another breathtaking make-under just in time for the Oscars, playing the balding and overweight former US vice president Dick Cheney in Vice.

And it’s more than just a novelty. Actors are always keen to point out that, radical transformation or not, the character still has to come from the inside. "It wasn't about getting fat” Theron said about her role in Monster. “It was about getting to a place where I felt closer to how Aileen was living."

Whilst this commitment arguably began with ‘Method’ actors such as Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro studying under tutor Lee Strasberg in 50s and 60s New York (and who reached their peak with their award-winning, bloated appearances in The Godfather and Raging Bull respectively), the appeal of an extreme transformation is stronger than ever, especially for women. “It was such a fantastic role to be given at this stage of my life because I get to dig into a place I’ve never gone before” Kidman explains. After high-maintenance looks in projects as varied as Moulin Rouge, Paddington and TV’s Big Little Lies, being released from the pressure to look perfect is an obvious attraction.

And as Zellweger goes to great lengths for her next role as drug-ravaged singer Judy Garland, whilst Michelle Williams similarly dresses down for her upcoming turn as tragic rocker Janis Joplin, it seems that the race for the 2020 awards season has already begun.

This month featuring music artist Jennas Jones By Executive Business Editor Elise Quevedo

I can never get tired of saying that music is inspiration, music is therapy and music is a big part of our lives. We don’t realize how much of an impact it has on us and our culture.

without hearing a festive tune. Music brings people together in a way not many other activities can. Whether it’s a small jam session at a park, a street performer or a concert at Wembley Stadium, people come together to celebrate the way music makes them feel.

Music is a part of us from a very early age if we think about it. Parents sing to their children when they are still in the womb, we learn the alphabet through songs and I even remember when I started learning a new language as This month I talk to the talented Jenna Jones. A a child, songs would play a big part of that journey too. performer, writer and visual artist. Jenna Jones is a And how do we celebrate? With music! At a wedding, violinist, (she prefers the description fiddler as it somehow birthday celebration, a party, a baseball game, think fits better) singer/songwriter and lover of the visual arts/ about Christmas, you cannot walk into any store now movement and dance in general. MilliOnAir

Jenna, tell us a little bit about your history I was born in London, second generation Irish. I grew up with music around me, having musician parents. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to join bands and do gigs from a very young age. I have consequently done most of my learning on the scene, with an audience in front of me. I never fitted in in the school orchestra, I don’t like sitting and playing very much, and I don’t work remarkably well with full on instruction. Playing as a young teenager with professional adult musicians sped up my learning process ten fold, and this is where I grew and really learnt. I was in no way good enough to play in front of an audience, often big ones, and I was underaged to top, but my dad saw it as an invaluable experience. It was really a musical education you couldn’t pay for or put a value on of which, I’m eternally grateful to my dad for. I learnt how to freestyle basically, how to think on my feet, to not be thrown by changing circumstances etc. It’s allowed me to think/play in the moment, I don’t rely on sheet music or instruction. In fact, I prefer creative freedom....and winging it. I learnt how to weave in and out of all genres of music in a way, learning to forge my own style, within a group, so also understanding the crucial roles of

all members collectively. My dad (Pete Bite) is a singer/ songwriter, who had numerous big record deals and was signed by Mickey Most in the 80’s. I picked up on that side of creativity and expression from a young age too, so it wasn’t solely about being on stage. The idea of translating your own story into song was something that resonated with me. The ‘art’ being found in the ability to be truthful, honest, raw, in your ‘own’ way. There is no real right or wrong, as it’s an individual expression, a release. The process of release I think was of particular importance. I’ve observed more the ‘need’ to write over recent years, as a form of therapy, music can be quite transformative.

I’m kinda concluding that that can all be done through art of any kind. For me it’s predominantly music, however it does crossover for me personally on a visual sense too. With my love and interest in dance and fashion....and what the eye sees, as a whole. I love visuals, my mind is very visual, so I can imagine a song with the aesthetics and colour scheme to accompany. I see how crucial all aspects can be, to hit all the senses. What an amazing background. So Jenna, why the violin/fiddle?

The truth...I saw a cool cowgirl at a Butlins holiday park, playing the fiddle in a saloon bar. She had hair down to her feet and I was purely captivated by her otherworldliness I was a very shy kid and the appeal to and mystic. use performance to express yourself As a child, I wanted that. It didn’t fascinated me from the moment I matter if it was a recorder or a violin. made the connection that feelings However I’m still very insistent that could somehow be transformed into ‘art’ or something else. Although I do the instrument to some degree is irrelevant. I chose the violin. It could get nervous and always have, I find have been the saxophone. I’m not that being on stage feels like a more entirely sure the difference it would authentic way of living sometimes, it’s the place where there is freedom, have made (musically speaking). To me it was and still is just a choice of no rules (within reason) and a ‘tool’. And I like to think I have a few platform to kinda be whoever you options, although perhaps not all are want to be, or feel you are etc. It’s a safe place to express and transform in as sharp ;) it’s a tool of choice to channel what’s inside you I guess. a way. Over the past few years in particular I’ve become more and Could have been a didgeridoo! Maybe more taken by the idea of the violin chose me. Ha. Who knows. transformation and change and healing in a way.

What's the appeal with performing? For me personally, being in bands is the best thing ever! Getting on stage and creating and sharing an energy with other musicians can be quite intimate and magical. I love performing in general. But being in a band and sharing high moments on stage ...it’s a union of sorts, it’s kinda intimate and public at the same time.

hired mainly to look nice on stage opposed to what she can bring. Quite soon into joining bands I knew I had to have an equal take in what I was contributing musically, and luckily I always did.

Over the years I’ve played in varying bands supporting great acts or have done sessions for various artists, like Gary Barlow, Take That, The specials, Florence and the machine, We are sharing something together Bastille, most recently doing a West and then translating it to an audience. End residency and European tour However the feelings we get are kinda with Michael Flatley in Lord of the just for us. It’s a great natural high :) I Dance and just finishing a UK tour don’t necessarily feel that with every with Beans on Toast. single band I’ve played with, I think it does require all members to be ‘in the It is great to see a strong female in the zone’ so to speak, then in that flow, industry. Tell us more about Lord of the magic can happen! The Dance I love this answer, as not many understand this concept. It's not always about being the lead, it is the combination of each band member that creates that beautiful magic and energy. Tell us about some of your journey so far. After playing in my dads band for many years, I eventually started making musician friends and joining various north London Camden/ Holloway bands playing original music. The fact I was stronger on the improvisation front I think sometimes made me an attractive addition to a band, and also on a level footing with the ‘boys’.

It was an unbelievable experience, that happened quite spontaneously and unexpectedly. I auditioned for Michael Flatley a week before the show went live at The dominion theatre for his final West End residency. It was by far the biggest audiences I had performed to, with such a dedicated and global fan base.

I loved the routine of being a West End performer, with our own dressing room that became like a second home, and the feeling of being part of something quite iconic was a real privilege. After a 6 month residency we went on to do a European tour, of 13 countries, 50 odd cities over a period of months. Travel being part of It shouldn’t be like that, but to some a musicians job is undoubtedly a degree a certain amount of sexism still positive aspect for me. Exploring exists in music as a whole and cities I previously hadn’t realised particularly in bands. Some girls being existed. MilliOnAir

You are part of history for sure Jenna, as Lord of The Dance like you said, has a global fan base and will always be a very loved show. And your recent tour, how was that? Touring with Beans On Toast was great. Jay has established himself a strong and dedicated fan base over years of hard work on the music/ festival scene. I actually watched him from the beginning, so again, a nice privilege to then join his band for the Custy Tour. It was also at a nice level in terms of a fully paid tour etc, but we still get to do the more band DIY aspects, in terms of travelling in the bongo and doing merchandise etc. So nice big audiences but still a real nice down to earth feel about it too. Chatting to Beans fans after and kinda being in more direct contact with the audience. I write tour diaries, but couldn’t possibly elaborate now, we would be here all month!! :)

What do you prefer? Recording or touring/performing? I used to hate recording. I saw it as a quite intense and intimidating process. It requires you to be naked in a way, strip back and work forwards. Where as performing is slightly different to that. More of the illusion is required all at once. I’ve now grown to love all aspects if I’m honest, for varying reasons. I like the idea of watching something grow from nothing in the studio, from paper to then hearing it through speakers. I will always love performing, as I grow, my ideas around it also develop. I am aware of the massive effects music has on people, the power of transformation, and not just for the performer. The ability music has to join a mass of individuals to a similar wave length fascinates me. (more on that in later books) :) What’s currently on the agenda/ what direction are you headed in? More Jenna Jones work, the big picture of ultimately being on a platform to join all my passions together and express it in musical form! I’m writing and recording more of my own stuff now, working with various producers, choreographers, and creatives in general. My visual identify is growing, and my own input in how I translate my inner world is imperative! So in a way I’m creating my visions through a variety of mediums these days, and exploring the art of expression in both the visual and the audio. I think I always knew the intention was never to be solely a musician in someone else's band, as I’ve grown, I’ve realised I need to have a large amount of the control in what I do, mainly because I see it in my mind, so inevitably I need to get it out there! Most shoots I work on I have a strong aesthetic idea of how I want it before I get others involved, the same with my ideas around movement and storytelling via mini movies or visuals. I see it all as one big package, and one aspect as integral as the other, so i’ve accepted I can’t pick just one avenue. It’s a fascinating idea to me, that I can develop myself however I choose, in whatever form, and my ideas are a plenty :)

Aside from music/dance/visual projects any other dreams? To write a book, or numerous books. I read a lot, and I’m captivated daily by the beauty of words, and the ability they have to transport us to other worlds and dimensions, or to make us think, on a really basic level. I think at some point I’d like to write a semi biography, self reflection, spiritual book, I have an ever growing interest in the healing and spiritual capacities of art, the connection of all things and beings :)!!. oh, and to learn to fully ride rodeo style and own my own white horse, or a whole ranch.

you have gathered so far in life, what advice would you give to your younger self?

When you are young your imagination is vast and free. As soon as you’re able to write, capture all you think on paper. It’s magic! Oh and start yoga from a young age.

Amazing Jenna, great answer as I always tell people to write a book! If you are passionate about something, if you have acquired the right knowledge and skills, there is always a book to share all the experiences in.

Tell us something not many people know about you?

What or who inspires you in life?

What country would you like to visit you have not been to as yet?

People who take risks, the game changers, risk takers and outlaws of society, I adore an individual character. Films, certain directors with strong visual identities like Wes Anderson, Quinton Tarantino. And mainly, People I love, they bring out all the feelings I somehow want to transform into art, good and bad. Mainly my mum, she’s the epitome of a strong independent woman. She’s taught me how to live, basically. What does Jenna enjoy doing on her spare time? Photography, I’m an avid street photographer, I love capturing real life in its full messy glory. I read a lot. Tom robbins and Murakami are favourites and many many books on Buddhism. I’m also doing an online course on quantum physics. Which I’ve had a fascination with for many years now. With all the experience and wisdom

I can’t swim. I think I’m part mermaid. But I’m still learning to swim.

That’s hard. Everywhere really! Vietnam and San Francisco are top of list. And finally, what is the one item you cannot live without? Ha, I’d like to think I’m practicing non attachment to items. Everything is semi replaceable. Apart from my car. It’s a vintage classic figaro, and she has an aura. She genuinely makes people happy. I love how your car is a she! Thank you very much Jenna for your time. There you have it, an insight into the world of performer, writer and visual artist Jenna Jones.
