Scene 1- East Town Park

As a team we plan to walk to East Town Park from Samuel Ward Academy carrying the Camera, Tripod and Crane. Once at the park we plan to head towards Sturmer to film in an industrial looking Tunnel which has metal poles and framework surrounding it.

Scene 1- East Town Park

Scene 1- East Town Park This location emphasizes our motif of entrapment and isolation because the tunnel is situated amongst the Forrest, almost as if it’s in the middle of nowhere. Furthermore, the metal framework and constructional railings reflect the entrapment that the main character feels within his own body, a consequence of his spiraling depression following the break up with his girlfriend. The modern looking tunnel also completely contradicts with its surroundings, creating the impression that the outward appearance of the main character, who seems calm and cool looking, juxtaposes with what he feels inside. Tunnels are also a common location used within Indie Rock videos and therefore by using one we are following the Conventions that are frequently used within our chosen genre. The actual tunnel itself is covered with graffiti with expressions such as ‘ Not another day’ apparent , which can be symbolic of the emotion the characters feels. Tunnels are also dimly lit so aid the narrative in terms of a dark, controversial storyline. When researching the history of this location, we realized that this bridge/tunnel used to be part of the Haverhill Railway Track, this enhances the urban and industrial feel to our video that is often present within the Indie Rock Genre. To ensure we capture the entirety of the location, we plan to use a crane shot.

Scene 2- Chalkstone Estate

Scene 2- Chalkstone Estate

We plan to briefly use this location to reflect the urban scenery of our chosen genre. In essence we plan to associate this setting with drugs where the main characters visits at the high point of his breakdown.

Scene 2 – Chalkstone Estate This location embodies urban and acts as a means of social realism that the audience are familiar with. Therefore the audience are engaged as they are used to seeing pristine and exotic settings within mainstream media. The moss, rigidity and peeling paintwork on the brick buildings adds to this overall feeling of deterioration in which the character is experiencing. Urban estates and realistic settings were preferred by our target audience, as evident by our survey monkey, so we plan to include these within our music video. The spikes that are evident on the garage beside the block of flats reflect the danger that the main character is in. Although we will not make it explicitly evident that the character is picking up drugs from this location, we hope to place these shots next to the ones of him taking drugs so that the audience can make the link and thus become more engaged. We also think that this location looks as though it should be in Urban London, where Indie Rock originated.

Scene 3- Wilsey / Bull Field

Scene 3- Wilsey/ Bull Field

We plan to use a vast field as a means of freedom for the main character. Such a field is located behind our school so we will use this in order to transport equipment quickly and efficiently.

Scene 3- Wilsey/ Bull Field We plan to use this location to contrast with the more urban environments we will use throughout our music video. The open field suggests the distressed main character finally feels free, signifying that there is hope for his wellbeing and relationship. It could also suggest that the main character is alone and isolated, a common motif that runs throughout our music video. We plan to film in the early evening so that the light is still bright enough to resemble a sense of freedom but there is still a feeling of coldness throughout. Through our online Survey we realized that our audience preferred a variety of locations within a music video so we plan to act upon the suggestions of our target audience in order to engage and satisfy them.

Scene 4- Chivers Road ( Matt’s house)

Scene 4- Chivers Road ( Matts house) We plan to shoot in the bathroom (primarily in the bath tub) for the shots building up to the climax of the song. The main character will sit in the bath, which we will fill with water, contemplating his life and reminiscing about the memories that he shared with his girlfriend which we will hopefully portray as flashbacks. This scene will be one of the most intense and potent scenes of our music video because it provokes the impression that Matt may be attempting suicide. We plan to imply suicide by the fact that Matt will be fully dressed in the bath, bringing alcohol and drugs with him before fully submerging himself in the water. However, the cleanliness and colouring of the room may signify hope for the individual who will later be pulled from the water by his girlfriend. Nevertheless, the water links to our motif of entrapment and isolation because once submerged you have a little contact with the rest of the world.

Scene 4- Chivers Road ( Matts house)

We also plan to briefly use the Kitchen to film some shots to create a sense of realism that the audience can engage with. Because its such a normal and conventional location the audience will begin to realise the extent of the characters depression and isolation and how such issues affect everyday life. Everyday settings are also typical of the Indie Rock Genre whose independent labels tend not to spend money on elaborate sets unlike mainstream media. We also plan to use the Kitchen as the first setting with an explicit reference to drugs, this contradicts the norms of such a location to a great extent, highlighting the severity of the current situation the main character is in.

Scene 4- Chivers Road (Matts house)

We plan to use the bedroom as the location where the actual breakdown of the relationship occurs. This contrasts with the stereotypical environment of a bedroom which usually revolves around close proximity and intimacy and therefore relates to the Indie Genre because it’s not what the audience expect to happen. We plan to use the window in the film as well so the blinds can act as a representation of entrapment, a frequent motif used throughout the music video.

Scene 5- 8 Hundon Place ( Niamh’s house)

Scene 5- 8 Hundon Place We plan to briefly use the dining room to create the impression of an everyday routine between the characters. Every day settings were also popular in our survey so we will make sure to incorporate as many as possible so that the audience can relate more so.

Scene 5- 8 Hundon Place We plan to use the garden in the late evening to ensure the lighting is dark enough for us to start a fire. Most Indie videos are shot in this sort of natural lighting to mirror the darkness that is usually embedded in the storylines. We planned to make our own props ( photographs of matt and Olivia when they were happy) and thus needed a way to discard them to show Matt’s declining state of health. We thought the fire would be a good idea as it would completely eradicate any trace of the photos, signifying that there is no hope for the relationship and thus cause the audience to sympathise with the character.

Scene 5- 8 Hundon Place

We also plan to briefly use another bedroom to film a few shots of when Olivia and Matt were in a relationship. These shots will be in the style of flashbacks and memories, which we ensure will be recognised by the audience via Mise-en-scene as the characters will wear white in this location. We realised that we couldn’t use the same bedroom as scene 4 or the audience may become confused between past and present. As a whole the colours and organisation of the room look more neutral and thus reflect the happiness of the characters who were at this point in a relationship.

Scene 6- Wratting Road Railway Bridge

Scene 6- Wratting Road Railway Bridge

We plan to use the view from the bridge as a means of reflection for the main character. However, given his instability it could also have associations of danger and potential suicide. The bridge will allow the character to elevate himself both physically and spiritually, perhaps implying hope for the future. Tunnels and bridges or other man made constructions that usually appear in city scapes are common locations used in the Indie Rock genre as the railings convey a sense of entrapment. This location also adds to the urban feel of the Indie Genre that the audience can relate too and thus acts as a means of social realism.

Scene 7 – London Liverpool street & other additional shots. For some extra location shots we plan to visit London, where our genre originates from. After previously getting the train from Cambridge to London Liverpool Street I thought the journey contained many urban buildings, tunnel, views and artwork that would be great for our film. Therefore the footage was taken from the train, this engages the audience as they share the exact same viewpoint as the Camera. These shots also help to make our music video more recognisable as the Indie Rock genre. They can also be metaphorical of the journey that the character is embarking on throughout the music video.
