Music Video Research

By Millie Iron

‘This short presentation demonstrates my initial research for the task of creating a music video. It contains analysis of our groups preferred genre type, that we will base our video around. I will also textually analyze 3 music videos from this genre, but these will be situated within another document that will soon appear on my blog. The aim is that by the end of my genre based research, we will agree on a song choice for our final video.’

Narrative Based Our preferred genre types are Indie Rock and or Drum & Bass because as a group we wish to venture away from mainstream pop music in which the music videos would be centered around a performance based music video. Personally, I find the tendency to lip sync and conduct a dance routine in these types of video, diverts attention away to the music and the narrative behind the music. Whereas when the music video focuses on a developing narrative, the audience are intrigued and will perhaps rewatch the video in order to re evaluate parts they missed. Another reason why we have chose to focus our music video around a narrative style is because performance based videos tend to contain clips of the artist/band themselves, which we can not do.

Narrative vs Performance Because of our preferred genre of either Drum & Bass or Indie rock ( in which we are yet to decide) I have chosen to show the differences between narrative and performance styled music video from the same genre. After all we are focusing on the video rather than the music itself. This is an example of a Performance music video.

1975 – Girls (Released in 2013)

Performance Styled Music Video I have screen shot 4 shots of the 1975’s music video in different positions to show the performance based criteria. Throughout the video, steady shots (consisting of either close ups or long shots) are seen of the band performing, perhaps to advertise the talent of the band or to show a direct source of where the music originates from so that the audience can relate the song to the band easily. However the element of Indie Rock is still visible because of the frame in which the member of the drums is situated in. Its unclear whether this is simply a border or if his sequence was filmed separately before being placed in the music video.

Narrative Our chosen style of music video is Narrative because of the reasons stated in the previous slides. Artist Andy C's Heartbeat loud has an iconic narrative music video based in Sub-urban India. It tells the story of two young boys who grow attached to separate horses, their fathers then take them to race and gamble on who will win, placing the young boys who are no older than 8 under considerable pressure. The music video follows the boys through their journeys and despite their fathers selfish ideals, their friendship does not suffer. The lyrics link to the music video to a large extent, with some including "Slow up, you're not made for this heat", implying the pressure and responsibility to earn your family money at such a young age. As well as this, the climatic section of the song corresponds with the most tense part of the music video, the horse race between the two young boys.

Indie Rock Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980's. It's an extremely diverse genre with subcategories of pop, grunge, punk and many others The term 'indie rock' incorporates the independent and relatively low budget labels and attitudes of the bands and artists involved. Indie rock is often associated with subtle rock and has recently grasped its place in the charts with bands like The Arrtic Monkeys, Kings of Leon and The Killers.

Drum & Bass Drum & bass is a genre of electronic music which emerged within 1990's England. The genre is often characterized by heavy bass lines created by sample sources or synthesizers. It stemmed from the nightclub and electronic culture in the late 80s and early 90's. Drum & Bass is dominated by a small group of record labels, usually D-J producers.
