Broken fences What a person does is far more powerful than what they say. Our talk can only take us so far… but when it’s time to back up our words with action…it might be another story all together. And as we continue to travel down this new reality path of what it means to be an American, let us not lose sight of our heritage, courage and faith. Let us remember that… we have come a long way and this too shall pass. Only Native Americans can truly say that these are our lands and that reality and identity cannot be lost. For many of us, our coming to America is deeply embedded in the clear understanding that our ancestors came to these shores as immigrants, slaves or indenture servants.

my elders… they know how to stir the pot. They also believe that if elected to office that they can make things better and be the difference maker. Recently, former President George W. Bush stated that “power is addictive.” And that is what so many people seek.

Regardless of how they came to this new world, their journey through the American experience has become a part of our living story. Their footprints and sacrifices have laid the foundation for what has made America so great…a land of the free and a home of the brave.

Of course, there are those in each generation who try to divide people and to create confusion. They take advantage of perceived weaknesses, known fears and limitations. They focus on creating an illusion that things are bad and others are to blame. In the words of

It is hard believe that after 240 years of American history, we are still dealing with so many issues from our past. Building a fence, a wall or a bridge is nothing new. In fact we still are dealing with a number of fences erected centuries ago and are stilling standing today. For all fences are not physical barriers, they also include barriers that are psychological, emotional and spiritual. And these fences are at times more challenging

to deal with than a physical barrier. We must remember that a fence goes up to either to keep something out or to keep some in. Get out or stay a prisoner The movie Get Out has created quite a stir in the African American community. Every person who has seen the movie has an opinion about it. I have heard people talk about the symbolism in the movie. I have heard others mention the killing spree ending. I went to see Get Out and found myself laughing. The mind wiped African American characters in the movie reminded me of African Americans in real life. Remember the time when African Americans had common sense? Well the African Americans in Get Out were typical of those today, ignorant. The first African American male kidnapped and mind wiped was taken in an affluent suburb. By the

time he realized that he was in the wrong area he was in the trunk of a car. When we next see this guy he is a docile smiling person with an unattractive old white woman. As I watched the movie I thought about the many African American males with unattractive white women. Maybe this is what happened to these unfortunate wretches. I deduced this phenomenon also takes place with the African American female in similar circumstances. Enter the hero of the movie, Chris Washington. Chris is dating a white woman, Rose Armitage. Rose is taking Chris to meet the family at their house in the woods. Chris has some sense and is skeptical about the trip.

Rose lays the whiteness on him and he’s headed to the woods. Rod, Chris’s friend, tells him not to go, Rod’s message goes ignored. Chris has the look many African American males have when dating white women. A look of docility or passiveness, neutered may be the best description of this facial expression. Chris blindly follows Rose into hell. By this point in the movie I was shaking my head in disgust. I understand Chris dating Rose, even marrying her. But, for Chris to go into those woods with her to meet family? Remember common

sense? Chris had been taken over before he ever met the family. As I watched the movie I saw millions of lost African American males in Chris. The clothing and yearning look on Chris’s face when dealing with Rose and later her family are typical of today’s African American male. Ironically Chris had a dark complexion to make the point of blackness obvious.

er realizing they have everything white people want. In Get Out the white people craved the physical prowess of the African American. In reality African Americans have the skills on both mental and physical levels white people crave. Never forget the sciences were created by black people and later stolen by Greeks. In the foolish quest for assimilation the African American has forgotten who they are. Who are you, African Americans? Have you subjugated your true self for a white essence that has driven you mad?

African Americans, do not be angry with white people because the fault is all on you. African Americans, are you just athletes and dancers, or are you scholars and intellectuals? Only individual African Americans can answer this question. The problem I won’t ruin the movie for is simple; either get out by anyone who hasn’t seen it. waking up or stay asleep and The mother is a psychiatrist be a prisoner. and plays with Chris’s mind. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Why must we suffer? A theological perspective (Part 3) Through the ages many people have drawn the conclusion that all suffering is punishment from God for sin. That is not always the case. Though we are responsible for our actions and will be rightfully punished for them, God also uses all things to fulfill His purposes in our lives. Let’s look at the four primary types of suffering. Avoidable – this is suffering that is preventable but that we bring on ourselves either as the natural consequence of our actions or as God’s judgment on us for refusing to trust Him and rebelling against Him. Deserved – this is suffering that we are directly responsible for and comes because of sin in our lives (e.g. selfishness, lying, defiance, disobedience, breaking the laws, etc.). See Galatians 6:7. Undeserved - this is suffering that is unnecessary and always seems unmerited and unjust. The story of Job, for instance, gives us a clear insight and addresses the mystery of unmerited misery, showing that in adversity God may have other purposes besides retribution

for wrongdoing when God allows suffering. Unavoidable – this is suffering that is inevitable and yet necessary. Philip Yancey in his book, “Where Is God When It Hurts” (Zondervan), suggests that some people suffer for no good reason at all. God alone knows why and we should not understand it until heaven bound or kingdom come. Let’s turn our attention

now to why suffering is necessary. “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has given to us.” - Romans 5:3-5

Here the Apostle Paul sings the joy of his confidence and assurance in God. The Christian who has been justified rejoices, not despite their tribulations but in or because of their tribulation. This text shows the natural, logical connection between suffering, patience, character and hope, and why suffering is necessary. 1. “Suffering produces perseverance” not in and of itself but the powerful grace of God working in and with the tribulation. Patience enables us to endure pain; difficulty and to wait even in the thick of it with a sense of calmness and assurance that God remains in control. 2. Only a believer who has faced distress can develop perseverance and that in turn develops “character.” Through pain and suffering, God wants us to grow and mature in the faith, so in the coming through, we will be strengthened and built up for our continued Christian journey. 3. As Christians suffer, they develop steadfastness, that quality deepens their character and tested character results in “hope” and gives us

greater confidence about the future. This character that endures the test always endures in hope that God will see them through. 4. “Hope does not disappoint…” Since a believer’s hope is centered in God and His promises, then hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We have hope that cannot be disappointed or humiliated. The hope we have is in the glory of God and even though it is tested in the cauldron of tribulation, it will be proved genuine because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts. The Milwaukee Bucks joined forces with Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs for a Workforce Development Jobs Informational Session on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Hillside Resource Center, 1452 N. 7th Street. The session focused on jobs that would be coming about due to the Bucks' arena project development and opening of the facility. In addition to the SkillSmart Online job portal to access opportunities in construction and other jobs related to the new arena, the Milwaukee Bucks and its contractors at the new arena will also utilize an online registry of low-income workers, through the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM), to help connect the workers to jobs during the construction of arena-related projects and to jobs at the arena after it opens. The HACM website can be found at section3registry.hacm.org. Pictured at the event are Northcott Employment Specialist Morris Brazil, III; City of Milwaukee Housing Authority Section 3 coordinator Evans M. Gant; Alderwoman Milele Coggs; and Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin.

Education

Event helps young men of color find hope, opportunity

Middle and high school students from the 53206 ZIP code and the Sherman Park neighborhood took part in a special Day of Destiny program to take the first steps toward being in control of their futures. The event, held at North Division High School, offered students the opportunity to be matched with mentors and adults to create positive relationships

to guide the young men through high school and beyond. In addition to mentor matching, the program featured empowerment workshops, motivational speakers and a variety of workshops. The event was led by Milwaukee author, poet, and I Will Not Die Young co-founder Kwabena Antoine Nixon (pictured).

MPS students celebrate world cultures Through a new United Nations Schools of International Learning program, students are expanding their understanding and knowledge of global cultures and ways that interrelationships affect our world. On March 20 at the Tripoli Shrine Center, Milwaukee Public Schools elementary and middle school students presented a special program to celebrate cultures and identify the challenges facing countries around the world. Nine MPS schools took part – Bethune Academy, Burbank, Garland, Humboldt Park, Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language, Parkview, Story, Victory and Zablocki. These schools are attended by large numbers of students from immigrant

and refugee families. Across all nine schools, a total of 35 native languages are spoken by students. Classes have been working all year on their projects. Exhibits included photos, maps and important facts about each country, as well as strengths and challenges and the role each country plays in its region or continent. This work is part of a new district initiative: the United Nations Schools of International Learning program. It is sponsored through a $100,000 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Annette J. Roberts & Joan R. Robertson Fund for World Peace, World Law and Peace Education. Ms. Robertson attended the event as an honored guest.

Adrianne Jordan

Adrianne ranks third in her senior class. Her college of choice is Norfolk State University. Adrianne’s plan is to major in Nursing. The advice she would give to a non-senior is, “Do not, I repeat, do not procrastinate about getting the work done! Slacking will hurt you in the long run.” Adrianne says what she has learned from attending North Division is, “Try to be a loner and focus on what matters, friends will come and go.” Adrianne is currently enrolled in the certified nursing assistant (CNA) program at North Division High School. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

From slavery to present: Why blacks distrust healthcare (pt. 1)

By: Richard Allen Williams, M.D. As the leader of the National Medical Association, I have the responsibility to provide a perspective to our constituents on key issues in medicine that are important to us and to the patients whom we serve. One of those issues is TRUST, which has special meaning to people who have been subjected to so many abuses and indignities over the past 400 years. In the tradition and in memory of the late legendary Howard University School of Medicine professor, civil rights activist, former NAACP president, past president of the National Medical Association, philosopher, and my personal mentor and hero, W. Montague Cobb, MD, Ph.D, I submit the following perspective on this topic, which will be incorporated into my forthcoming book, Blacks in Medicine: Clinical, Demographic, and Socioeconomic Correlations (Springer Science & Media, 2017). I. Historical retrospective It is axiomatic that patients must trust their doctors, otherwise the treatment that would be given will not succeed. The purpose of this

article is to explore the elements of trust as applied to the doctor-patient relationship, especially as it is viewed by African American and other minority patients and healthcare providers. It is necessary to go back in history and determine what the situation has been for African Americans, because our history has been unlike that of any other sub-population group in this country. When blacks first came to this country in 1619, one year before the landing of the Mayflower, they came in chains and in bondage, snatched from their native Africa and loaded aboard slave ships and transported here through the Middle Passage. Once here, they were subjected to the most atrocious living and working conditions imaginable, and when they became ill, they were treated with massive doses of cathartics and other medicinals more fitting for treating horses, such as croton oil, which induced heavy diarrhea, and tartar emetic, which caused effusive vomiting. Thus cleansed and purged, the slave who was unfortunate enough to become ill was immediately returned to work in the fields, because the master did not want sickness to cause a loss of his revenue brought in by his slave’s labor. A slave was a commodity, and commodities had to be maintained in top working condition in order to maximize income on the plantation. Needless to say, the slaves did not trust the mas-

ter’s medical ministrations, and they preferred to use their own treatments, which consisted of voodoo and hoodoo potions, practices and folk remedies brought over from Africa. Sometimes these were successful, but they often resulted in disastrous side-effects which might lead to more disability than they started with. Over time, the slaves developed their own practitioners, called “slave doctors”, who attained considerable fame in their localities. Some of these slave doctors went on to become quite successful and many were credited with curing specific diseases and conditions such as snakebite and rabies. Some even bought or were granted their freedom. A very few went on to medical schools, and the first black graduate of an American medical institution was David John Peck in 1847. After the Civil War ended, several black medical schools were started so that African Americans could treat their own. The first to open was Howard University School of Medicine in 1868, and by 1910 there were 11 such

schools. However, after the Flexner Report on Medical Education in the United States and Canada was commissioned by the Federal Government, 9 of these institutions were closed on the grounds that they were not qualified to produce competent doctors, and by 1930 the number had been reduced to 2: Howard, and Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. The Flexner Report, written by Dr. Abraham Flexner more than 100 years ago, stated that black medical schools should restrict their efforts to training “Negro sanitarians” rather than surgeons, because blacks were a source of infection and contagion which presented a threat to whites. As a result, the production of a sufficient number of black doctors to treat the health problems of a growing black population was perpetually crippled, thus adding to the slave health deficit, which Byrd and Clayton maintain has left African Americans in a continually negative health situation compared to whites. Accordingly, the number of black doctors in this country

has never been above 5 percent of the total number of American physicians, which is out of proportion with the total black population of 12 percent. To complicate the problem of inadequate health care delivery for blacks, many white doctors refused to care for these patients. Black babies were delivered at home by midwives rather than by physicians, who were not available, and in any case, hospitals would not admit black patients. With this type of background, it is no wonder that African Americans learned to mistrust the medical system, which they perceived as meaning them no good and possibly meaning them harm. Once they were able to be admitted to hospitals under the separate but equal system, they feared that they might never come home again, so an admission to the hospital was looked upon rather ominously, like a death sentence instead of a chance to restore health. Any trust in the medical system which was developed at that time was born out of desperation as well as from a carryover from slavery of a feeling of obligation and loyalty to the white man. Black people had been conditioned to do as they were told, and they complied blindly to medical orders rather than doubting or questioning the system. This kind of trust was not real; it was artificial and was based on fear, domination, and intimidation. (Continued next week: pt. 2)

Let’s look at the math. Like $100 million for our local economy. Or the thousands and thousands of jobs they create. Or the hundreds of thousands of kids who do better in English and science and, you guessed it, math. But there’s also 50–as in the 50 years UPAF has supported the arts in Greater Milwaukee, and the over $300 million we’ve raised to set the stage since 1967. Let’s keep it going. Wealth Building

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

Prepare your budget for closing costs when buying a home Imagine the frustration that would follow if you spent hours planning and narrowing in on a dream home only to find out that you can't afford it when push comes to shove. Starting with a price range can help you make the most of your search, but you'll need to account for closing costs to create a realistic budget. A catch-all for the fees and services that result from the sale of a home, closing costs are generally about 2 to 5 percent of the home's value when you're making a purchase. In other words, you could pay about $4,000 to $10,000 on a $200,000 home. Estimating your closing costs. Your closing costs and fees vary depending on where you're buying, how much you put down, who helps you with the home-buying process, the type of home you're buying and the type of loan you're taking out. You can estimate the closing costs of homes you're interested in by using one of the many closing cost calculators online. Also, ask your real estate agent to help you

estimate the closing costs of homes in different neighborhoods. A few of the fees you could encounter when closing on a home. While costs can vary and state laws dictate differences in the closing process, here are a few typical services or fees: Inspections. You likely want to hire an inspector to make sure the home doesn't need any major repairs and there aren't any wood-eating pest (such as termite) infestations. Many lenders require you get these inspections, but even when they don't it's usually a good idea. Attorney fees. You could have to pay attorneys to help prepare and review documents for the closing. Survey. Some states require you to hire a surveyor to verify the size of the lot. Homeowners insurance. You may need to pay several months' worth of homeowners insurance premiums up front. Origination fee. Mortgage lenders, banks or bro-

kers often charge about 1 percent of your loan's value. Property taxes. Several months' worth of property tax payments could be due at the closing. You might find advertisements for "no-closing-cost" mortgages. While these offers can be enticing, you'll generally pay a higher interest rate on the loan or the closing costs will be wrapped into the mortgage. It might be a good option if you're planning on moving within the next few years. Otherwise, you'll likely wind up paying more in interest over the lifetime of the loan than

you would have on the closing costs. Try to do your own calculations to determine if a no-cost closing makes sense based on your estimated closing costs, increase in monthly payments and how long you plan on staying in the home. You'll know approximately how much you have to pay before the closing. Mortgage lenders have three business days from when you submit a loan application to give you a loan estimate. The standardized document shows your estimated interest rate, monthly payments, taxes, insurance and closing costs. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has an interactive example of a standard loan estimate form with explanations and definitions of terms. On the second page, there'll be a list of closing costs, including a breakdown of which services you may be able to negotiate. 1. You shop mortgage lenders, compare the loan es-

timate you receive and then continue the process with the lender that gives you the best estimated terms. 2. Three business days before your scheduled closing, the lender you choose must give you a five-page closing disclosure form with the finalized terms. 3. Carefully look over the closing disclosure and ask your real estate agent, loan officer or attorney questions. If you don't agree with the new terms of the deal, it's not too late to back out. If you're happy with the terms and the closing goes smoothly you'll be a homeowner soon. Bottom line: Estimating your closing costs, and budgeting accordingly, can help ensure you're looking for homes within your price range. That's important because you want to be able to move quickly when you find a home you love. However, don't move so fast that you miss out on savings opportunities. Shopping mortgage lenders and service providers could help you minimize your closing costs.

They’re your dreams. Start building them. Consider a U.S. Bank Home Equity Line of Credit for your next project. With competitive rates and flexible payment options, lasting home improvements could be within reach. Introductory rates start as low as 1.99% APR.

*1.99% Introductory Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is available on Home Equity Lines of Credit with an 80% loan-to-value (LTV) or less. The Introductory Interest Rate will be fixed at 1.99% during the 6-month Introductory Period. A higher introductory rate will apply for an LTV above 80%. Offer is available for new applications submitted from February 25 – May 5, 2017. After the 6-month introductory period: the APR is variable and is based upon an index plus a margin. The APR will vary with Prime Rate (the index) as published in the Wall Street Journal. As of March 16, 2017, the variable rate for Home Equity Lines of Credit ranged from 3.51% APR to 8.29% APR. Higher rates may apply due to an increase in the Prime Rate, a credit limit below $100,000, an LTV above 70%, and/or a credit score less than 730. A U.S. Bank Consumer Silver, Gold, or Platinum Checking Package account is required to receive the lowest rate, but is not required for loan approval.
